- 0:00Speaker 1: And today, November fourth is California's special election day for
- 0:03Speaker 1: Proposition fifty. Musting Media Group has been covering the election
- 0:06Speaker 1: through live updates on mustingnews dot net and at cp
- 0:10Speaker 1: Musting News on Instagram with stories, pictures, videos, and audio
- 0:13Speaker 1: from our KCPR news team. Throughout the day tonight's show,
- 0:17Speaker 1: we'll work outside of our regularly scheduled program as we
- 0:20Speaker 1: will provide Prop fifty coverage from six to seven pm
- 0:23Speaker 1: and live updates every fifteen minutes from seven to eight pm.
- 0:27Speaker 1: And now we have Delaney Ritter with an explanation on
- 0:29Speaker 1: what is Proposition fifty and how to cast your vote
- 0:32Speaker 1: before polls close at eight o'clock.
- 0:36Speaker 2: In June twenty twenty five, Texas redrew its congressional maps
- 0:39Speaker 2: mid decade, shifting five districts from Democrat to Republican. Those
- 0:43Speaker 2: changes were significant enough that a seventy three percent Harris
- 0:46Speaker 2: win in twenty twenty four would now turn into a
- 0:49Speaker 2: Trump win under those new lines. In response, California Governor
- 0:52Speaker 2: Gavin Newsom called a special election for Proposition fifty, a
- 0:56Speaker 2: measure designed to level the playing field before the twenty
- 0:59Speaker 2: twenty six mid terms. If past Prop fifty would temporarily
- 1:03Speaker 2: redraw California's congressional maps, adding five Democratic leaning seats until
- 1:07Speaker 2: twenty thirty, but opponents argue it undermines California's independent Redistricting Commission.
- 1:13Speaker 2: They say giving lawmakers control could open the doors to
- 1:16Speaker 2: gerrymandering and reduce public transparency. A yes vote supports the
- 1:20Speaker 2: new temporary maps. A no vote keeps the existing districts
- 1:23Speaker 2: and the current system in place. As election day is
- 1:26Speaker 2: winding down, there is still time to cast your ballot
- 1:29Speaker 2: in person at San Luis Obispo locations including the Performing
- 1:33Speaker 2: Arts Center at cal Poly, Zion Lutheran Church on Foothill Boulevard,

- 1:51Speaker 2: registration is available at all of these polling locations. Ballots

- 5:34Speaker 4: because it's right here. She said that voting matters because
- 5:37Speaker 4: it is the founding fathers fought for in the American Revolution.

- 6:04Speaker 5: Hushmi is set to become the first Muslim woman to
- 6:07Speaker 5: win a statewide election in America. Another prominent Muslim candidate,

- 6:14Speaker 5: is more than two hundred thousand votes ahead of Chris
- 6:17Speaker 5: Cuomo and is miles ahead of Kurtisliwa. In person voting

- 6:23Speaker 5: ballot trop off sites on the second floor in the UU,

- 6:37Speaker 5: who said they decided to vote because it's their right
- 6:39Speaker 5: as a citizen, and they figured why waste that The
- 6:42Speaker 5: Slow County Clerk Recorder's office today said that voting traffic
- 6:45Speaker 5: was normal, with eighty thousand mail in ballots being received
- 6:49Speaker 5: before today again, which is around forty five percent of
- 6:52Speaker 5: the total of the ballots sent to Slow County voters.
- 6:55Speaker 5: First year biology student Anthony Monteaux said voting on campus
- 6:58Speaker 5: today was super smooth, super easy. Montell wanted to vote
- 7:02Speaker 5: today because I think it's important because with everything going
- 7:05Speaker 5: on right now, we need all the support we can get,
- 7:07Speaker 5: especially with the really crazy clashing of sides in politics
- 7:10Speaker 5: in our government. One of the early returns today, JD

- 8:28Speaker 4: on Santa Rosa Street. Polls will be opened until eight
- 8:31Speaker 4: pm on election day and up next. One of the
- 8:33Speaker 4: biggest measures on today's ballot could temporarily rewrite California's political
- 8:37Speaker 4: map and shift power in Washington, reported delianny Ritter explains
- 8:41Speaker 4: what could happen if Proposition fifty passes.
- 8:45Speaker 2: If California voters approve Proposition fifty, the state's congressional maps
- 8:49Speaker 2: will be withdrawn by lawmakers and used through twenty thirty,
- 8:52Speaker 2: a change that could have major effects for Californians and
- 8:55Speaker 2: for control of Congress. Prop fifty would temporarily replace maps
- 8:59Speaker 2: created by California's Independent Redistricting Commission, the nonpartisan body designed
- 9:04Speaker 2: to keep politics out of the process. The new maps
- 9:07Speaker 2: would be drawn by state officials and take effect in
- 9:09Speaker 2: twenty twenty six, remaining in place until the next census. Supporters,
- 9:14Speaker 2: including Governor Gavin Newsom, Senator Alex Padilla, and former President
- 9:18Speaker 2: Barack Obama, say that a yes vote would level the
- 9:21Speaker 2: playing field. They argue that it's a necessary response to
- 9:24Speaker 2: Texas's recently redrawn Republican leaning maps, which they say threatened
- 9:28Speaker 2: to democratic representation nationwide. For Californians, the chance could mean
- 9:34Speaker 2: new districts that give more weight to urban and coastal areas,
- 9:36Speaker 2: and potentially at five Democratic leaning seats in Congress that
- 9:40Speaker 2: would increase California's influence in the House and could help
- 9:43Speaker 2: shift the national balance of power. Proponents call it the
- 9:47Speaker 2: Election Rigging Response Act, saying it defends democracy and protects
- 9:51Speaker 2: voters from partisan map making elsewhere. They also note the
- 9:54Speaker 2: change would be temporary, California's Independent Commission would return in
- 9:58Speaker 2: twenty thirty one after the next sense. There would also
- 10:01Speaker 2: be at short short term costs. Counties would need to
- 10:04Speaker 2: update ballots and election materials at a statewide cost of
- 10:07Speaker 2: up to a few million dollars, but supporters say the
- 10:10Speaker 2: cost is small compared to what they see as the benefit,
- 10:13Speaker 2: that is preserving California's representation and its ability to counter
- 10:17Speaker 2: other states as partisan maps. If Prop fifty passes, California
- 10:21Speaker 2: would use the new maps in the twenty twenty six
- 10:23Speaker 2: elections and keep them through the end of the decade.
- 10:26Speaker 2: If it fails, the state would continue using the current
- 10:28Speaker 2: maps drawn by the Independent Commission from US saying news
- 10:31Speaker 2: on KCPR, I'm Delaney Ritter, voters.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Have until eight pm tonight to decide, and with some
- 10:39Speaker 4: other information on how this is playing on other states.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Here's reporter Fiona Hastings.
- 10:43Speaker 1: On Friday, panelists and Ohio approved new United States House
- 10:46Speaker 1: districts the same day that Virginia senators approved a proposed
- 10:50Speaker 1: constitutional amendment letting lawmakers draw congressional districts. These redrawings and
- 10:54Speaker 1: developments from Ohio, Virginia, and now California with today's election
- 10:59Speaker 1: are coming from jerrymandering efforts. Nationwide. Redistricting usually happens every
- 11:04Speaker 1: ten years after the census, but some states are now
- 11:07Speaker 1: trying to get more seats for their preferred political party,
- 11:10Speaker 1: which might be a battle continuing into the twenty twenty
- 11:12Speaker 1: six mid term elections. Ohio Redistricting Commission members approved a
- 11:17Speaker 1: new US House district map that could potentially increase the
- 11:20Speaker 1: winning seats in the twenty twenty six midterm election for
- 11:23Speaker 1: the Republican Party. Virginia's next steps for the measure will
- 11:27Speaker 1: require future votes from lawmakers and putting the amendment on
- 11:30Speaker 1: a statewide ballot. In Virginia and California, these legislative changes
- 11:36Speaker 1: are trying to temporarily suspend the power of the redistricting commissions,
- 11:39Speaker 1: while Republicans in Ohio are trying to similarly strengthen their influence.
- 11:44Speaker 1: If Proposition fifty passes in California, representatives and partisan leanings
- 11:48Speaker 1: of many districts could shift. From usting news on KSEPR.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I'm Fiona Hastings.

- 13:51Speaker 5: of government services and said, I'm using all of this
- 13:54Speaker 5: government stuff, so I need to make sure I know
- 13:56Speaker 5: what's going on and have a voice. Several key elections
- 14:00Speaker 5: have been called already this evening. NBC has called the
- 14:02Speaker 5: New York mayoral election and Zoron Mam Donni is expected
- 14:06Speaker 5: to run away with a win. First returns are showing
- 14:08Speaker 5: over half a million votes cast for Mom Donnie, whereas
- 14:12Speaker 5: less than four hundred thousand votes have been cast for
- 14:14Speaker 5: Andrew Crome, Cuomo or Curtis Liwa. MBC exit polls show
- 14:18Speaker 5: that Sliwa voters would have preferred Mom Donnie. In a
- 14:21Speaker 5: situation where only him and Cuomo were running. Forty seven
- 14:24Speaker 5: percent of respondents prefer Mom Donnie, forty four percent would
- 14:27Speaker 5: prefer Cuomo, and the remaining six percent would abstain from
- 14:30Speaker 5: the election. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justices Christine Donahue, Kevin Doherty,
- 14:36Speaker 5: and David Weckt all won their retention elections tonight. According
- 14:39Speaker 5: to NBC, all three justices are Democrats. Mikey Cheryl, Democratic

- 14:47Speaker 5: Republican Jack Ciarelli, with over a million votes tallied for Cheryl,
- 14:51Speaker 5: a threshold Ciarellia is yet to reach, and just as
