- 0:01Along a section of Winding Rd. tall rusted gates harbour dark
- 0:06secrets. Not an adventure for the weak,
- 0:11this place is known for an abundance of evil activity.
- 0:16As the weary wander through the rusted iron bars, the souls of
- 0:21the damned whisper. Some will visit with wonder and
- 0:26others apprehension, and for good reason, for this place has
- 0:32spawned many legends. Stories of satanic cults,
- 0:38sacrifices, demonic possession and a wide range of terrifying
- 0:44apparitions have allegedly revealed themselves.
- 0:48But are there any truth to the rumors?
- 0:51What are these bone chilling stories?
- 0:54What is it about the stretch of Rd. in Thornton, Co that has
- 0:59made it so infamous? That is what we will discover
- 1:03here on this episode of Mystery Archives as we explore the gates
- 1:09of Hell of Riverdale Rd. of Colorado.
- 1:27All information provided is purely speculative.
- 1:31I've tried my best to find any and all information I could to
- 1:34the best to fit the stories and or see possibly where they could
- 1:39have come from or if there's any truth to them.
- 1:43Riverdale Rd. an 11 mile path located between Thornton and
- 1:48Brighton Co, has been a supposed hotspot for paranormal activity
- 1:55for decades. The earliest rumors tell us of a
- 1:59nearby Native American burial ground.
- 2:02When it was in use, it's said that the tribe placed a curse
- 2:06upon the land to affect those who would disturb their dead.
- 2:11And as we've heard numerous times before, you don't mess
- 2:15with Native burial grounds. Nothing good ever comes of it.
- 2:21More on this later. Over the years, strange
- 2:25entities, those seeming to be half human and half animal, have
- 2:30been known to permeate the path ahead.
- 2:33Could these creatures have been the very feared skinwalkers of
- 2:37native folklore? Not all is evil with this rumor,
- 2:41however. There are both good and evil
- 2:44forces at work. They say that if you see a Gray
- 2:47fox along the road, then a benevolent entity has graced
- 2:52your trip. But if a coyote is what you see
- 2:55instead of a Gray fox, the path ahead is an ominous and
- 3:00malevolent 1. We will certainly dive back into
- 3:04all of these rumors later, but the lore doesn't end here.
- 3:09It was nicknamed Closer to modern Times for a variety of
- 3:12stories over the decades, and those of which I'll cover now in
- 3:18no particular order. Many people were lynched upon
- 3:22the trees surrounding the road and many as sacrifices, some
- 3:28allegedly of former slaves by racist groups and others
- 3:33sacrifices committed by residents of the local community
- 3:37long ago. Whether the groups were one and
- 3:40the same cannot be distinguished.
- 3:43The Gates of Hell was once supposedly the home of a commune
- 3:48of Satanists. Satanists who would do anything
- 3:52to keep their black church and its practices the secret.
- 3:57If anyone questioned the leadership, or if an outsider
- 4:01got too close to the truth, they would simply go missing.
- 4:06On the North End of the road, not too far from Hwy. 7, there
- 4:11once stood a large house, probably what most would
- 4:15consider to be a mansion. But the ruins of this building
- 4:19too harbor sinister secrets. Built by a very wealthy man for
- 4:24him and his family, the home was once quite the marvel to gaze
- 4:28upon, but the ability to look upon the structure would be
- 4:32short lived. Shortly after moving his family
- 4:36in, once construction was finished, the man began to
- 4:40change, growing colder, more distant and stranger.
- 4:47Located back behind the home was an underground cellar and taking
- 4:51the blood from the lives of those who had gone astray.
- 4:56It is here that they say he used black magic, writing strange
- 5:00symbols on the walls with their blood in order to try and
- 5:05conjure spirits and demons, perhaps in order to gain power
- 5:12and wealth. Behind the cellar is an old
- 5:15burnt tree, which has some lore of its own as well.
- 5:20This was where some victims were supposedly hung and burned at
- 5:23the stake, leaving charred remnants.
- 5:28One fateful night, as his family slept, the husband of the family
- 5:33crept up the stairs with an axe and without the others knowing,
- 5:40he went room to room, slaying his wife and his children as
- 5:46their blood coated the floors of the house.
- 5:50This diabolical man, seemingly demon possessed, then took fuel
- 5:56and dumped it all throughout the house, lit it a flame, and then
- 6:01stepped outside to revel in pure madness and what he had just
- 6:06done. Was it him or a demon inside of
- 6:10him? This will perhaps never know,
- 6:13but he apparently once the home was partially engulfed in flames
- 6:18and took a rope, fastened it to the charred tree behind his
- 6:22cellar and ultimately hung himself, his feet dangling
- 6:27inches above the ground as the home behind him was reduced to
- 6:32burnt rubble. Other versions of the story say
- 6:36the man disappeared and was never seen or heard from again.
- 6:40A pale white figure of a woman is said to haunt the grounds
- 6:44now. Can be heard screaming some
- 6:47nights when the wind is still. Those that visit the Gates of
- 6:52Hell area have reported, as previously mentioned, seeing
- 6:56strange animals, but they also report seeing and hearing
- 7:00stranger things as well, disembodied voices, the feeling
- 7:06of being watched, and the sensation of icy hands poking
- 7:12and touching them. Another very strange phenomenon
- 7:16that's said to exist is bloody human hand burns materializing
- 7:21on the street signs with no rational origin.
- 7:26This place, like many, seems downright terrifying in my
- 7:29opinion. But is there any truth to any of
- 7:32these stories, or are they just that, stories?
- 7:37Well, here's what I found. Following what we covered in
- 7:41order, Thornton Co was indigenously inhabited by
- 7:47several Native American tribes, most notably the Arapaho and the
- 7:52Cheyenne. Each tribe had very different
- 7:56burial methods. The Arapaho usually buried their
- 8:00deceased on the same day that the person had died.
- 8:04The body was dressed in their finest traditional clothing and
- 8:08a spacious grave was dug into the ground.
- 8:11The person was then buried with some of their personal
- 8:14belongings, such as clothing and blankets.
- 8:19Stones and other items would be placed on top of the grave to
- 8:22mark its significance and who was buried there, arguably
- 8:28fairly similar to how the West buries people today.
- 8:31The Cheyenne, however, had a very different method.
- 8:35It's unclear how long it took them to typically lay someone to
- 8:38rest, but their funeral customs were that they would wrap the
- 8:43deceased in shawls and blankets. It would proceed to the
- 8:47designated burial ground, and during the procession a
- 8:51bloodletting practice would take place where ponies would
- 8:55typically be killed. They are interesting to me in
- 8:58numerous ways, but they wouldn't bury their dead.
- 9:02They would instead build a scaffold of sword and lay the
- 9:06dead on top of it. This was done in the belief that
- 9:09it would accelerate the soul of the departed's passage into the
- 9:14afterlife. For practical reasons, it is
- 9:18believed that they did this in order to prevent wild animals
- 9:22from pillaging the corpse, which very well may have been the
- 9:26case, but typically the bodies would stay and sometimes decay
- 9:30and eventually fall back down to the ground.
- 9:34Now, curses did exist for both tribes, but I couldn't find any
- 9:38that specifically referenced burial sites and almost all
- 9:42people's beliefs. Disturbing the dead is
- 9:45considered very taboo. Could it perhaps be our
- 9:48collective regard for the eternal rest of those who have
- 9:52passed that have led us to the belief that a burial ground
- 9:56could indeed be cursed? Also, skinwalkers, which are
- 10:01still feared to this day, were created when a person committed
- 10:05a heinous act like the killing of a family member, and this
- 10:10would grant them supernatural powers, allowing them to
- 10:13shapeshift from a human to an animal at will.
- 10:18They often become coyotes, wolves, foxes, or bears, though
- 10:25they can transition into any animal.
- 10:28Both coyotes and foxes are allegedly the omens along the
- 10:32road containing the gates of hell.
- 10:35When it comes to the supposed lynchings that took place, I
- 10:39found this in Colorado. It was a cheap way to execute
- 10:44criminals, and the majority of those that are documented,
- 10:48roughly 175 cases, were mostly the results of court rulings at
- 10:53the time all over the state and the time being the early 20th
- 10:57century. As far as if formal slaves were
- 11:01lynched, this very possibly could have taken place, but I
- 11:05couldn't find any that were directly linked to Thornton.
- 11:09In total, there were five events that were explicitly tied to
- 11:13race, but many took place again in the early 20th century,
- 11:19albeit as horrific as they were. After 1919, lynch mobs
- 11:24occasionally flared up to dole out public justice, but as more
- 11:29people moved to the state, attitudes towards this type of
- 11:32behavior and action began to change.
- 11:36Therefore, public opinion as well as opinion of the courts
- 11:40moved away from this method of execution.
- 11:44When it comes to the apparent satanic coal commune that
- 11:47supposedly lived there, I couldn't find any evidence of
- 11:50them no matter where I looked. But obviously, if I was a secret
- 11:55cult and I was good at my job, I wouldn't have any evidence of my
- 12:00bloodthirsty existence on the Internet either.
- 12:03This now leads us back to the mansion where the name came
- 12:07from. The name Gates of Hell came from
- 12:10the old and rusted iron gates of a burned down mansion, A blaze
- 12:16that was the result of a madman who took his family out.
- 12:21Now there is proof of the mansion, who bought it, and what
- 12:25happened that caused it to burn down, but the truth is certainly
- 12:29less spooky than the legend. Before I dive into it, I wanted
- 12:33to also mention that it's more than likely that the charred
- 12:36tree was the result of either the original fire or of a
- 12:40lightning strike taking place. The mansion was originally named
- 12:44the Volbert House, built in 1864 by a man named David Volbert.
- 12:51This two-story brick house was a fine structure of dignity.
- 12:55David, who was a very successful prospector along with his wife
- 13:00Catherine, had two daughters and a son.
- 13:04However, even though fitting the time frame when the madman story
- 13:09supposedly took place, David didn't go crazy and harm his
- 13:13family. He actually would go on to pass
- 13:16away, presumably within the home, at the age of 75.
- 13:21What happened to his family members is unclear, but they
- 13:24most likely moved on and passed away from natural causes.
- 13:29The home, as far as I can tell, sat vacant from the early 1900s
- 13:34until 1975. This is when a man named Doctor
- 13:38Hugo Roddick and his wife Ori and Sally Rodig purchased the
- 13:43home, working hard on behalf of the Adams County Historical
- 13:47Society. The couple would go on to
- 13:49restore the home and live there for a short time, designating
- 13:53its status as a historical monument.
- 13:57Things seemed normal for the Rodigs until 1:00 AM on November
- 14:0128th, 1975. The home, which stood at 9190
- 14:08Riverdale Rd. became engulfed in flames.
- 14:13It's unclear whether or not the couple had any children or any
- 14:16that lived with them at that time, but the Roddick's would
- 14:19make it out of the blaze very much alive.
- 14:23And although the origin of the blaze was undetermined, the
- 14:26authorities at the time did determine that arson did not
- 14:30seem to be at play. Doctor Roddick would go on to
- 14:34live and ultimately passed away at the age of 102.
- 14:39It seems as though the Madman Mansion story, as I've come to
- 14:42see it, could possibly be a fictionalized amalgamation of
- 14:47both of the real stories surrounding the Volbert House.
- 14:51The ruins of the home as well as the original gates have since
- 14:55been demolished and the Pelican Ponds open space now sits in
- 15:00their place. Sometimes the truth isn't as fun
- 15:03as the legends that surround an area.
- 15:06And perhaps there could be more truth in some of these tales.
- 15:10Perhaps the area itself is where the veil is thinner between our
- 15:14world and the next. It's hard to say, but one thing
- 15:18is certain, the folklore of America's vast, creative and
- 15:24entertaining. And it's incredible to see so
- 15:27many stories spawning from seemingly such an insignificant
- 15:31place like a winding stretch of Rd. in the middle of Colorado.
- 15:37But what do you think? Do you have any stories about
- 15:40the Gates of Hell? Do you have any stories from
- 15:43your local community that have become legends?
