- 0:00Speaker 1: You're listening to Bill Handle on demand from kf I
- 0:03Speaker 1: am six forty.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Traveling steeds by my handle.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Here morning crew.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Neil gone this week, and when I walk out of
- 0:18Speaker 2: the door, I think it's next week.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I'm gone for the entire week. Neil will be filling
- 0:22Speaker 1: in for me.
- 0:24Speaker 2: It is a Monday, December fifteenth, second day of Hanukkah, Christmas,
- 0:29Speaker 2: ten days away, and some of the big stories were
- 0:33Speaker 2: looking at. Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle were murdered
- 0:36Speaker 2: and found yesterday at their home in Brentwood, and their
- 0:41Speaker 2: son has been arrested for the killing of his parents.
- 0:45Speaker 2: This is a story that's developing, and it's not only
- 0:48Speaker 2: a national story as you would guess, but very much
- 0:50Speaker 2: a local story also having them living virtually their entire
- 0:54Speaker 2: lives in southern California, and the shooting at Brown University
- 0:59Speaker 2: where two were killed, and then the shooting at Bondi
- 1:03Speaker 2: Beach in Australia and Sydney where fifteen people or fourteen
- 1:08Speaker 2: were killed and fifteen well fourteen were killed by the gunman.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I don't consider the gunman a person at all, and
- 1:17Speaker 2: it's a father and son who did the shooting. The
- 1:20Speaker 2: father has been killed, the son is in the hospital. Okay,
- 1:24Speaker 2: a story about drivers in California. It used to be
- 1:29Speaker 2: that drunk drivers were given a slap on the wrist
- 1:33Speaker 2: even when a death occurred. It was not really considered
- 1:37Speaker 2: a crime until Mother's against Drunk Drivers came in mad
- 1:41Speaker 2: and really made some movement. So you would look at
- 1:44Speaker 2: California being at the forefront of dealing with drunk drivers,
- 1:49Speaker 2: speeding drivers, etc. Well, they are at the forefront. California
- 1:53Speaker 2: is at the forefront of ignoring it. There was a
- 1:58Speaker 2: state committee meeting that this year and the director of
- 2:03Speaker 2: Caltrans showed a chart and it showed black bars representing
- 2:08Speaker 2: the death toll on California roads in each year of
- 2:11Speaker 2: the past twenty years. If you stick at the chart,
- 2:14Speaker 2: fatalities have been falling dramatically until twenty ten, and then
- 2:20Speaker 2: it goes the other way.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And nobody there could miss.
- 2:24Speaker 2: The fact that more than sixty percent increase happened in depths.
- 2:29Speaker 2: The head of cal Tran says, we're working to reverse
- 2:32Speaker 2: that trend now at that hitting at that committee hearing,
- 2:37Speaker 2: no legislator asked about the chart. No one asked the
- 2:41Speaker 2: director what exactly was going on, and the hearing was
- 2:46Speaker 2: three hours and the committee member asked a question about
- 2:50Speaker 2: homeless encampments along the road, gas tax revenue, gender identity,
- 2:54Speaker 2: on IDs, planning for the twenty twenty eight Olympics, not
- 2:58Speaker 2: a word about the deaths on the highways. Over the
- 3:04Speaker 2: past decades, nearly forty thousand people have died more than
- 3:08Speaker 2: twenty have been injured on California roads.
- 3:11Speaker 1: And.
- 3:13Speaker 2: The cow Matters investigation shows that time and again the
- 3:19Speaker 2: crashes were caused either by drunk drivers, chronic speeders, and
- 3:26Speaker 2: motorists with a history of recklessness recklessness behind them, and
- 3:31Speaker 2: year after year, nothing happens, not the governor, not the legislators,
- 3:35Speaker 2: not the courts, not the DMV, Nobody acts on it.
- 3:41Speaker 2: First of all, we have some of the weakest DUI
- 3:44Speaker 2: laws in the nation. DUI related deaths have been rising
- 3:48Speaker 2: more than twice as fast than the rest of the
- 3:50Speaker 2: country per capita. Now, there were some bills, a bills
- 3:55Speaker 2: specifically that it was introduced, and this was a bill
- 3:59Speaker 2: regarding speeding, even to the point where it goes into recklessness.
- 4:04Speaker 2: If you're speeding, and if you're hitting seventy five miles
- 4:07Speaker 2: now or eighty five miles an hour, that's speeding if
- 4:09Speaker 2: you're hitting one hundred miles an hour, and now we're
- 4:11Speaker 2: talking about reckless driving, and two years in a row
- 4:15Speaker 2: bills that would have required the use of speed limiting
- 4:18Speaker 2: technology on cars that failed, specifically those monitors that either
- 4:26Speaker 2: do not let the car go past a certain speed
- 4:29Speaker 2: or breathalyzers. If someone's been accused of drunk driving convicted,
- 4:33Speaker 2: the car doesn't start unless the breathalyzer is blown.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Into and the meter shows.
- 4:41Speaker 2: A zero or well below the level of drunk driving.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And it was on the books, it was being passed.
- 4:50Speaker 1: They did pass.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Gavin Newsom vetoed the bill that required technology that alerts
- 4:58Speaker 2: drivers when they're speed Babe, Babe, bape your speeding. The DMV,
- 5:04Speaker 2: which can take dangerous drivers off the road, routinely allows
- 5:10Speaker 2: drivers with histories of dangers driving to continue to operate
- 5:13Speaker 2: on the roadways. Now, the guy who Knewsom chose to
- 5:17Speaker 2: run the agency won't even talk about it. The only
- 5:21Speaker 2: thing the ad Agency released was a statement talking about
- 5:26Speaker 2: modernization efforts that reflect quote an ongoing commitment to enhancing
- 5:31Speaker 2: accountability and transparency while continually refining our process to insure
- 5:37Speaker 2: California roads are safer for everyone. Is there one guy
- 5:40Speaker 2: who writes all of these pr hack reports about safety
- 5:46Speaker 2: is our number one concern, That's what we care about. Please,
- 5:54Speaker 2: So do you know who also fought the drunk driving
- 5:57Speaker 2: one the breathalyzer, because that was also on the books
- 6:00Speaker 2: that Newsome in fact said no to. You know who
- 6:04Speaker 2: fought it, the ACLU. The ACLU had that bill, got it. Well,
- 6:11Speaker 2: this was before it even hit Newsome, this was in
- 6:13Speaker 2: the legislature. And why is that because the drivers have
- 6:18Speaker 2: to pay for it and have to pay one hundred
- 6:22Speaker 2: dollars a month to a private company to rent those
- 6:26Speaker 2: breathalyzers that don't let someone who is drunk or blows
- 6:31Speaker 2: a certain amount of alcohol in his or her system drive.
- 6:35Speaker 2: And what the ACLU said, it is a form of
- 6:39Speaker 2: racialized wealth extraction because poor people can't afford it. Therefore,
- 6:48Speaker 2: this is racist and they got to the bill, the
- 6:51Speaker 2: acl you gutted the bill. So if you get hit
- 6:54Speaker 2: by a drunk driver next time out, or you lose
- 6:59Speaker 2: a loved one, God for just think of the ACLU,
- 7:03Speaker 2: especially if you're a liberal, you know, I just think
- 7:05Speaker 2: what the ACLU.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Did on this one.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Huh. All right, now, as you can imagine, there is
- 7:11Speaker 2: survey after survey being.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Done about this.
- 7:14Speaker 2: There's a new Gallup poll that was just released and
- 7:18Speaker 2: concerns and costs and access to healthcare. It actually has
- 7:23Speaker 2: long dominated Gallup survey studying health problems facing the country.
- 7:27Speaker 2: The number one problem with health care is the cost
- 7:33Speaker 2: and are you ready?
- 7:34Speaker 1: This is the part that I don't get.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Twenty three percent of respondents said the system is in
- 7:41Speaker 2: a state of crisis, which is among the highest readings
- 7:45Speaker 2: Gallup has ever said. Twenty three percent. Do you believe
- 7:49Speaker 2: it's such a low figure When I looked at this
- 7:52Speaker 2: and I'm thinking, only twenty three percent say the system
- 7:57Speaker 2: is in a state of crisis. Now we don't know
- 8:00Speaker 2: how far up, because this is the way surveys are written.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Do you believe it's give it a ten, a nine,
- 8:06Speaker 2: a seven. But it's really telling that I don't think
- 8:13Speaker 2: people understand it, although their insurance is going to go
- 8:15Speaker 2: up like crazy across the board, by the way, not
- 8:19Speaker 2: just the Obamacare recipients.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Eighty one.
- 8:24Speaker 2: The negative perception, by the way, goes across party lines.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Now you would think that it's probably bigger among Democrats.
- 8:32Speaker 2: It would be eighty one percent of Democrats sixty four
- 8:36Speaker 2: percent of Republicans said the system is in a crisis
- 8:40Speaker 2: or of major problems, which is really interesting because that
- 8:45Speaker 2: is in direct opposition with Gallup says. But the bottom
- 8:49Speaker 2: line is that we know, we know how much trouble
- 8:55Speaker 2: we're in in terms of health insurance, and you're going
- 8:58Speaker 2: to see tens of millions of people who are insured
- 9:02Speaker 2: under Obamacare lose their insurance because they just can't afford it,
- 9:06Speaker 2: many cases double, in many cases triple because the subsidies
- 9:11Speaker 2: that were given to the American taxpayer who was buying
- 9:15Speaker 2: insurance under Obamacare, they went up dramatically. They were given
- 9:21Speaker 2: to the taxpayer slash customer of Obamacare because of COVID now,
- 9:28Speaker 2: and that was Grandfather. They was supposed to only go
- 9:31Speaker 2: until actually a couple of months ago, Oh no until
- 9:36Speaker 2: January first. It ends in two weeks. And this is
- 9:41Speaker 2: what shut down the government for thirty eight days. Just
- 9:46Speaker 2: is this issue of healthcare coverage, and the Republicans are
- 9:50Speaker 2: going to be blamed if this thing falls apart. Everybody
- 9:53Speaker 2: is scrambling now at this point. Republicans are trying to
- 9:56Speaker 2: come up with some kind of an answer, which.
- 9:59Speaker 1: They haven't for decades.
- 10:04Speaker 2: The Republicans have been saying, we have a better idea
- 10:07Speaker 2: than the conventional plan that's out there, certainly since the
- 10:10Speaker 2: first administration fort Trump administration, So we're not going back decades,
- 10:14Speaker 2: but the Republicans and Donald Trump has said he ran
- 10:19Speaker 2: on the fact he is going to come up with
- 10:21Speaker 2: a health care plan his first day in office. He
- 10:25Speaker 2: said we'll have a health care plan in two weeks.
- 10:30Speaker 2: And we've heard that over and over and over again.
- 10:33Speaker 2: The Democrats. It's easy for them, we just extend the subsidy,
- 10:38Speaker 2: thank you, We're done.
- 10:40Speaker 1: That's an easy one.
- 10:42Speaker 2: For Republicans that have to replace all that, that's a
- 10:45Speaker 2: little bit more problematic. So if this thing falls apart,
- 10:49Speaker 2: and it's going to because there's no answer here, there's
- 10:52Speaker 2: no way because the two sides are too far apart,
- 10:55Speaker 2: the Republicans are going to get blamed. And this is
- 10:57Speaker 2: going to hurt. This is going to hurt the Republicans. Now,
- 11:01Speaker 2: is something going to happen before the midterms. I'll tell
- 11:03Speaker 2: you if two things happen before the midterms. Thing number
- 11:08Speaker 2: one is inflation is not stopped and prices don't go down,
- 11:13Speaker 2: which is impossible, by the way.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Prices cannot go down.
- 11:17Speaker 2: You know, when Donald Trump said day one, he's going
- 11:20Speaker 2: to cut the prices in half, you know that is
- 11:24Speaker 2: so ridiculous. I gave it to him because that's just
- 11:27Speaker 2: an insane political statement.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Come on, give me a break.
- 11:31Speaker 2: But prices were going to be lower, as I said,
- 11:34Speaker 2: And when I opened up this morning, I said, I
- 11:38Speaker 2: did a Costco run on Friday, and normally I was
- 11:41Speaker 2: buying English muffins. And for the last several years, English
- 11:45Speaker 2: muffins have been seven ninety nine for a package of four.
- 11:49Speaker 2: They were nine forty nine a dollar and a half up.
- 11:55Speaker 2: And as I was thinking, as I was going to
- 11:58Speaker 2: the checkstand, you know what, nine is less than seven
- 12:04Speaker 2: ninety nine because prices have dropped. I actually believe the
- 12:09Speaker 2: President when he said prices are lower.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Okay.
- 12:14Speaker 2: And the other thing is if an insurance plan is
- 12:17Speaker 2: not put into place, those two are going to kill
- 12:21Speaker 2: the Republicans.
- 12:22Speaker 1: So we'll talk more about that coming up over the
- 12:24Speaker 1: next few days.
- 12:25Speaker 2: I think the Republicans are in trouble, I really do,
- 12:28Speaker 2: and I'll dive into that.
- 12:31Speaker 1: What a day of news.
- 12:33Speaker 2: It's a Monday, second day of Hanukkah, and in ten
- 12:37Speaker 2: days it's going to be Christmas and this holiday season
- 12:40Speaker 2: did not get off to a good start, certainly not
- 12:44Speaker 2: this past weekend. And what have we heard this past weekend. Well,
- 12:50Speaker 2: there's some good news that just came in and that
- 12:53Speaker 2: we heard about the US attorney in Los Angeles. I
- 12:57Speaker 2: believe that's who I gave the press conference, so I
- 12:59Speaker 2: have that right, Amy, I didn't hear the very beginning
- 13:01Speaker 2: of it was the was it the US attorney?
- 13:03Speaker 3: Yes, it was US Attorney Bill Staley, And they're still going, oh,
- 13:08Speaker 3: I'm sure, yeah. But we got the meat of it,
- 13:10Speaker 3: and that is that they've broken up a terror plot
- 13:12Speaker 3: for people have been arrested. Michael Monks is going to
- 13:15Speaker 3: join us at the top of the hour to bring
- 13:16Speaker 3: us the latest.
- 13:17Speaker 1: All right, and this was So that's the good news.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Now let me give you the real bad news, starting
- 13:22Speaker 2: locally with Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle being murdered
- 13:25Speaker 2: in their home yesterday. Their son has been arrested for
- 13:31Speaker 2: the murderer, and we're hearing some very grizzly details about
- 13:35Speaker 2: that murder.
- 13:37Speaker 1: That's horrific story.
- 13:38Speaker 2: There also the Brown shooting, and I think that happened
- 13:42Speaker 2: on Saturday, Brown University gunman came in and shot shot
- 13:48Speaker 2: up the school. And it's Saturday, you think, being nobody there,
- 13:52Speaker 2: they were studying for finals. It was finals weeks and
- 13:55Speaker 2: final finals week, and two students were murdered act of
- 14:00Speaker 2: what is described as straight out terrorism and anti sentiment
- 14:04Speaker 2: anti semitism, because the acts of anti Semitism have exploded
- 14:10Speaker 2: throughout the world. And this is where I give President
- 14:14Speaker 2: Trump a lot of credit. Is he is doing doing
- 14:18Speaker 2: everything that on school campuses where anti Semitism is the
- 14:23Speaker 2: most prevalent, he's shutting it down for the most part,
- 14:27Speaker 2: as well as the anti wokeism. And so the horrific
- 14:30Speaker 2: story came out of Australia. There's a beach, Bondye Beach,
- 14:34Speaker 2: which is in one of the better area's, a big
- 14:37Speaker 2: high end neighborhood. Two gunmen, a father and a son
- 14:41Speaker 2: with long guns, were on a small overpass at the
- 14:46Speaker 2: beach and started shooting. They killed fourteen people and is
- 14:50Speaker 2: injured dozens of others. And if you see a video
- 14:54Speaker 2: of a man who just tackled the father, I mean
- 14:58Speaker 2: at great risk to him elf. And it's a Syrian.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Interestingly enough, it's a man from Syria who came to
- 15:05Speaker 2: Australia in two thousand and six and immigrated and he
- 15:08Speaker 2: is now considered a national hero, as he should be.
- 15:12Speaker 2: And so it's just all of it has been horrific,
- 15:15Speaker 2: it really has. Hoping that tomorrow we start the show
- 15:20Speaker 2: with a little bit of good news. In the meantime,
- 15:22Speaker 2: Gary and Shannon are up, Michael Monks is on his
- 15:26Speaker 2: way to the press conference with the US Attorney as
- 15:28Speaker 2: talking about that terrorist plot that has been foiled that
- 15:33Speaker 2: was going to happen New Year's Eve. And so we'll
- 15:36Speaker 2: be back tomorrow with hopefully better news, as I said, Amy,
- 15:40Speaker 2: and will start with wake up call.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Neil is not here this week, so I'm jumping aboard.
- 15:47Speaker 2: And let's please, please, let's make it some better news.
- 15:52Speaker 2: This is KFI AM sixty.
