- 0:18I'm Jessica and this is a TC presents, debbik.
- 0:20A Rambles. Were a couple friends review,
- 0:22Korean dramas, and today on a very emotional kind of crazy
- 0:27episode. I'm acting.
- 0:30It will be crazy. I have repeat guests Mina from
- 0:33the Kpop bookshelf, podcast me know, girl, how are you good?
- 0:38How are you Jesse survived? I survived.
- 0:41I guess we should tell everybody that there was a hurricane this
- 0:44week in Florida and hurricane Ian and thankfully, my family
- 0:49and I are doing great. But Mina was basically in the
- 0:53know because we had this podcast episode scheduled right smack in
- 0:58the middle of the Ring. And we had to postpone, it was
- 1:01crazy. Mina, thank you so much for
- 1:03working with me on today's schedule.
- 1:05This hurricane, no, no, I scheduled the hurricane and then
- 1:08I realized later that I had the podcast.

- 2:17And like, who's behind the camera.
- 2:19Alright Mina. This is going to be a long one
- 2:22because this is kind of a big cast.
- 2:23Yeah, but feel free to jump in with whatever you've seen the
- 2:28cast in before, or You know, the directors have done some big
- 2:32things too, so we'll talk about it.
- 2:35All right, my drama. Listen abscess mr.
- 2:37Sunshine centers on a young boy, born into a house, servants
- 2:40family. Who travels to the United States
- 2:42during the 1871. She and me Yung Yola.
- 2:45Aka the u.s. expedition to Korea.
- 2:47He returns to his homeland later as a u.s. marine officer.
- 2:50He meets and falls in love with an Aristocrats daughter at the
- 2:53same time. He discovers a plot by Foreign
- 2:55forces to colonize Korea. For some reason, this gives away
- 3:00Nothing at all. Like it tells like the broad.
- 3:02Yeah. But damn like yeah, doesn't
- 3:06doesn't give anything away mr. Sunshine oh no, originally aired
- 3:10from July to September 2018. It is a whopping 24 episodes
- 3:16long and some episodes are longer than an hour.
- 3:19It has been directed by two people young book.
- 3:23He's directed ji-sun most recently and sweet home
- 3:28dokkaebi. In the gray.
- 3:30And lonely God, which we covered on the podcast.
- 3:32He's directed to her descendants of the sun which we also covered
- 3:36on the podcast. So, lots more like Dream.
- 3:39High Dream High is like a running gag now in the show,
- 3:42definitely in the same vein as yeah, no, it's like Gigi sohn
- 3:47sweet home, guardian Greenlee. Godson is about that.
- 3:50Dream, high like way down from like 2011.
- 3:53Like that doesn't fit but okay. Um, book.
- 3:56And then it's also directed co-directed by Jung Ji Hyo.
- 3:59Owen and he's directed 25:21. Also starring confetti he's
- 4:05directed, you are my spring, the king, Eternal Monarch, and
- 4:07search www. So that makes two of his dramas
- 4:11that we've reviewed for the podcast 25:21 and search www,
- 4:16mr. Sunshine was written by the
- 4:20effervescent Kim min-seok. She is a major name in the
- 4:26screenwriter circles for kdramas because she's written the king
- 4:30of turn them on our Guardian, the great and lowly God,
- 4:33descendants of the Sun, the airs, Gentleman's Dignity,
- 4:37Secret Garden and of course. Now mr.
- 4:39Sunshine, which were talking about today.
- 4:41Tons of all time kdramas have been penned by humans look.
- 4:47So we're getting to our caste. Let's see if you've seen any of
- 4:50these cast members before and let me know.
- 4:53Okay, So EB on gun stars as captain Eugene Toy.
- 4:58And he's done about 36 movies. He's mostly a movies guy and
- 5:03he's been in movies. Like The Fortress from 2017,
- 5:06Terminator Genisys from 2015, he was the T1000 in that for real.
- 5:13I kid you not, I kid you not. He was in memories of the sword
- 5:17from 2015, which I vividly? Remember watching that movie and
- 5:20thinking, this is such an excellent movie.
- 5:23Oh my God, I Believe this, they go online to see if people are
- 5:26talking about memories of the sword and everyone's saying,
- 5:28it's such a shit movie. And I was like, I literally I it
- 5:32was a blow because I thought it was like, really good and like
- 5:36the acting from Kim gone, because Kim goeun, of course,
- 5:39isn't it? Yeah, it's just fantastic.
- 5:42And then EG nose. Also in it from the red sleeve,
- 5:44like, people just fawning over Egypt.
- 5:46No. Now, in 2015, I was watching
- 5:48members who started out. I was like, oh my God.
- 5:50Anyway, so he's in that, he's also in masquerade from 2012.
- 5:54L've and that's the inspiration for the show.
- 5:57The Crown clown, which will be covering next on the podcast.
- 6:00If this is going to be released in order.
- 6:03That's the next row that we cover on the podcast.
- 6:05And of course he begun won best actor at the dead young film
- 6:10awards for his role in masquerade and lots of other
- 6:14movies. Like I saw the devil a couple of
- 6:16g.i., Joe movies hero from 07 joint security area from 2000.
- 6:22Big movies. Iris Joy security.
- 6:24Oh is a huge. Yeah, huge movie huge.
- 6:27He's got about twenty six credits for TV, including course
- 6:30most recently. Our Blues.
- 6:32He did squid game as he was a frontman and Squid game which we
- 6:35also covered on the podcast. If you want to scroll back in
- 6:37your podcast feed, you can hear all about squid game.
- 6:40I first saw a begun in Iris. Do you remember Iris?
- 6:45Vaguely or like I heard about, I think I've ever watched it.
- 6:48Okay, this I'm busy reading. Oh, I'm sorry.
- 6:51Ya know, for those who don't know, or did listen to our novel
- 6:54era episode, where Mina first was introduced to debauch
- 6:58audience, she runs a bookshelf party, like, it's all about Kpop
- 7:03books and K, media through books.
- 7:06So, she's reading all the time, even though you are like, I
- 7:09assume, you're sometimes watching kdrama, but Anyway, um,
- 7:13iris is was so huge. They did a movie afterward, you
- 7:17know, like that era in kdrama where they were, like, do a
- 7:20kdrama or even a Jai drama. And then all of a sudden they do
- 7:23a movie on it. That is what happened with Iris.
- 7:27It was amazing. Okay, okay.
- 7:29Yeah. Anyway so he won best security
- 7:33area so that's like on my list. Perfect.
- 7:35I see here. Okay, yeah, so it is on mine
- 7:37too. I don't think I've seen her if I
- 7:38have, I don't remember. So his co-star.
- 7:40I came Teddy. Plays.
- 7:43Go fishing and she's been in only six movies, but I hate
- 7:46pause for a second because I heard characters go Asian, I
- 7:49wanted you to call this episode. I hope that's not a spoiler,
- 7:52just cut it. If it is three men and a little
- 7:54icky, she maybe she know that's true.
- 7:58Hello, like you? She that's valid like, that's
- 8:02valid. No, no no, whoa, talk action and
- 8:04we will talk about the name of mr.
- 8:06Sunshine, at some point in this episode's for sure.
- 8:10That's a valid point. I know I'm relieving it.
- 8:13Okay, so she's been in six movies, including alien noise,
- 8:15which I did a patreon review for space Troopers, little little
- 8:18Forest the handmaiden, which is a park geun Suk movie.
- 8:22She won best new actress at the blue dragon film Awards, and
- 8:252016, big deal, of course, everyone knows her from 25:21
- 8:30from 2022 and she won best actress and most popular actress
- 8:34at the effects on Arts Awards. So proud that she actually did
- 8:38that because it's a big deal and she deserved it.
- 8:41We're going to go really fast. Watch the hand.
- 8:42Maiden. No.
- 8:43So look, I've said this a couple of times at the park at.
- 8:47I'm scared of watching the am made it.
- 8:50Why it's? So this is a genre it I just say
- 8:53Jean, you so naked. Yes.
- 8:55Ari. I don't know, she's super naked.
- 8:58It's a psychosexual lesbian Thriller, and it's a period.
- 9:02Right. Right, right.
- 9:03And that that combination, that like Sub sub genre completely?
- 9:07I like, I avoid it because it scares me shitless, like I like
- 9:11cannot deal with it. She's so good at and I don't
- 9:14like not saying you should watch it, but it it's just generally.
- 9:17If you are not scared of it yeah should watch it because she's
- 9:21excellent people. Don't amazing.
- 9:23Remember she's in there. Completely naked.
- 9:26It's a psychosexual lesbian Thriller.
- 9:28Yeah, yeah it's serious. And you know parktronic directed
- 9:32old boy? Yes.
- 9:33So like seven, you do you watch old boy?
- 9:36You can watch this and you can like, you know, you know what
- 9:40I'm saying? I see what you're saying and it
- 9:41is spooky. Season or this episode will air
- 9:44around spooky season October. And I hope, one day that I will
- 9:49bring myself to watch the handmade and because it's not,
- 9:52like, I don't want to watch it, I'm just afraid to watch it.
- 9:56Like, I think it's one of those rods just sit there afterwards,
- 9:59and just feel changed field inside versus being psycho
- 10:02thriller like it's not like, jump-scares know.
- 10:04I know, I know logically. I said psycho station and I'm
- 10:08telling you I got a handle on it and I'm scared.
- 10:12Scared to go in that room. Okay, so we're bringing up the
- 10:16rear. You yong-seok plays good on me
- 10:19and he has been in a few movies like Royal Tailor.
- 10:22Beauty inside. Yei monster boy, werewolf boy.
- 10:26He's a villain in a werewolf. Boy, when my favorite K movies
- 10:29of all time architecture 101, which is a big thing when it
- 10:32came out to, and then, of course, he was most recently in
- 10:35Narco Saints from Netflix, this is going into his TV work and I
- 10:39think everyone knows him from either reply. 294 or Hospital
- 10:44playlist, 1 and 2 which we've covered Hospital playlist. 1 on
- 10:48the podcast, if you want to scroll back in your podcast
- 10:50being and listen to that, lastly we have Kim min-jung as he no
- 10:54go. Do you might have seen her most
- 10:56recently in the devil judge from 20 21 and we have Beyond Johan
- 11:00as Kim we song and he you might have seen him before and me
- 11:04saying incomplete, life from 24. She watched me saying, no, I did
- 11:07it, I did. And I thought he was, he's kind
- 11:11of similar to the care. Has your but I really love him,
- 11:14okay? I really love him even though
- 11:15he's like I'm noxious you know okay but like all right we're on
- 11:19the other side of this maybe that's just my type.
- 11:21Never mind. Oh my God Amina.
- 11:27Oh man this post-hurricane man. I am in a mood.
- 11:30All right. Mina what did you think of mr.
- 11:33Sunshine. I thought honestly so it was
- 11:38definitely quite long at times dragging it times.
- 11:40And I'm trying to give too many spoilers There's but, you know,
- 11:43it is about like, pre-colonial, Korea, preach about Japanese
- 11:46colonization of Korea. But Japan's, like, kind of
- 11:49already there. And I found it very strange.
- 11:50How there is, like, of course, you know, if you saw Guardian,
- 11:53if you saw the other works, that the writers have done the
- 11:55directors of done, you know, there's gonna be a romance with
- 11:57their, like Revolution and then they're like romance, another,
- 12:00like Revolution and that like romance.
- 12:01And I'm like, what is happening? And I felt like it wasn't very
- 12:04seamless or like, it didn't make sense because it would be like
- 12:07revolutionary, like, guerrilla warfare for like a while and
- 12:10then I'd be like, we're in love. It's just But aside from that,
- 12:13it's visually stunning. There's these people are acting
- 12:17their pants off and there's so many layers and topics that we
- 12:21were discussing before I started recording about, like different
- 12:24topics about Korean Society, the time and Korean history.
- 12:26So it's worth watching, but there was definitely some kind
- 12:31of flaws. I think.
- 12:31What did you think? Hmm.
- 12:34Okay, so I will first tell you why I avoided mr.
- 12:38Sunshine for years because this came out in 2018, Dean and I
- 12:43remember it popping up. I vividly remember, it popping
- 12:46up on Netflix and going. Oh wow, it's like a period piece
- 12:50and it's like it looks turn of the century.
- 12:53But then they have this girl salon home book and like what's
- 12:56the deal? Like, I don't really get the
- 12:58time period. And then I saw the way that the
- 13:02promo shots were framing them, a Bianca and confetti, and I was
- 13:05like, oh, is this supposed to be like, a romance and then I what
- 13:09I saw. Was age Gap.
- 13:13I saw pure age Gap and I was like, that looks like a giant
- 13:16age Gap and I have said, this was your, I'm not a big fan of
- 13:21like Chasm age, gaps, in my entertainment, and in my
- 13:25kdramas, so I avoided it. I was like, I wasn't like
- 13:28getting the vibe of it and then I wasn't a fan of the age Gap.
- 13:33So I avoid it like the plague to be fair to myself from 2018 Eve,
- 13:40Gun was 48 years old when he started.
- 13:43No, yes up for real born in 1970, that 100%, 48 years old
- 13:49King, Teddy was 28 years old. That is a 20 year age Gap.
- 13:55So I was reading the tea leaves right on that one.
- 13:59But, you know, I would say is get, this may be by the bar is
- 14:01low for me, but I was like, at least she's not like 20 or like
- 14:0419 or, you know, how they sometimes do that in cage.
- 14:08Like, yeah, it's the big age Gap, but will react Tighter, and
- 14:12this one of the directors, of course, had a classic age Gap
- 14:16romance with the goblin that was classic, you know, 400 years,
- 14:20400 years in the context of the show.
- 14:23And then I think it was another, like not 20.
- 14:26I think it was either 20 or a little less than in the Years
- 14:29between game going and kong-kong you.
- 14:32Anyway, that's a whole nother thing.
- 14:33But anyway, they love it evidently because it's here.
- 14:38Goblin was 2016. Mr. Sunshine is 2018.
- 14:40So two years later they probably thinks this is like a side note
- 14:43about the writer but I feel like maybe they are kind of
- 14:46describing to like some Purity concept of like these virginal
- 14:51youthful untouched like sheltered ladies and then these
- 14:57like kind of manly Then right? Because you're a really manly by
- 15:00the time, you're like 48 for sure or 450 or however old you
- 15:06are bringing up some valid points here, Mina already.
- 15:09So just to get my thoughts out of the way I found that this
- 15:13show was really difficult to get into.
- 15:15For me, I was not hooked right away.
- 15:17I didn't find this was binge worthy, at all.
- 15:20I've sometimes thought that the length of the episodes was
- 15:22really a hindrance for me. Which I've said, so many times
- 15:25on the podcast, I am a strict hour-long person.
- 15:29Yeah. So when I started the show was
- 15:36very hesitant to like it. And again, I kind of grasp the
- 15:40time period very quickly. Episode 1 was very assaulting on
- 15:43the senses and very difficult to understand like who is who
- 15:47because they introduced like 50 people in one episode.
- 15:50So many, so many people and the conflict at large like the
- 15:54political conflict and the issues that are going on in
- 15:57Korea at the time. And I felt that that was a lot
- 16:00to take in as I can. And I have seen likes a goose.
- 16:03Seeing a ton of kdramas and I'm still like, who the hell am I
- 16:06looking at here? Like, oh, how are these people
- 16:08related? I was getting very confused.
- 16:10So I had to write down everything and now I deleted
- 16:12because I know what's going on. But for me from the first
- 16:18episode and me to the last episode night and day
- 16:20difference, I thought the show was a masterpiece.
- 16:23I love this show was well worth at least one watch from kdrama
- 16:27Watchers. I didn't really consider it a
- 16:30kdrama at the end of the day. I felt like this was pressed.
- 16:33Uh television that I was watching this could have easily
- 16:36been shown on like Apple TV like Pachinko was here in the states
- 16:40or it could have been shown on like HBO or something lives like
- 16:43a special you know, show it was absolutely riveting towards the
- 16:48end, the endgame episodes which lasted not one or two episodes.
- 16:52It was something like six episodes that felt like the
- 16:56third Act of the show was end game and those were amazing.
- 17:02Best part of the show. I agree with.
- 17:05So a lot of stuff happening. Not a payoff, a lot of payoff.
- 17:07Exactly. That was the word that I had in
- 17:09my head to a lot of it was pay off and I really appreciate that
- 17:14in the writing. I thought the writing knew that
- 17:17they were planting Easter eggs, knew that they were planting
- 17:20check-offs guns left and right lines and scenes and
- 17:24cinematography. And I could now graffiti that
- 17:25was repeated at the end of the show that felt like closure felt
- 17:29like, oh my God, this was what I was waiting for.
- 17:32This was why I wanted to watch the show, I think a lot of the
- 17:37political stuff was still very dense and yeah, you know, we can
- 17:42try and get into it and parse some of it out, especially some
- 17:46of the nuances of the culture back then which you did some
- 17:49research on. I'm really excited to get into
- 17:51it but honestly it is a Shakespearean tragedy.
- 17:56So a lot of people I think in the cage, right?
- 17:59Okay. Trauma Community will not watch
- 18:01a kdrama if Has a sad ending. I'm sorry to say right out the
- 18:05gate mr. Sunshine has only violence only.
- 18:09Bloodshed only said things for you.
- 18:12And in fact they warn you early on in the show.
- 18:15There is no hope that these characters are going to make it
- 18:19to the end unscathed. Happy alive, all these things,
- 18:23they're constantly like they finally credit history and that
- 18:27was already staler from the job. That is the other thing is that
- 18:30history is not on their side. And if you do anything remotely
- 18:34about, what happens to Korea and the amount of times that they
- 18:38were invaded and you know, what happens in Pachinko Pachinko is
- 18:44a great kind of teaser for what it leads up to the events and
- 18:49Pachinko. I guess I should say and how it
- 18:51informs identity going forward and further Generations down the
- 18:56line and just tensions between Korea and Japan, Korea and
- 19:00China, Korea and the u.s. all these Things.
- 19:03Really? I don't want to say it was well
- 19:07done, but I guess it was at least interesting to watch
- 19:10especially in the latter episodes.
- 19:14Yeah, I have a thought, but maybe I'll save it for after
- 19:17spoilers. Oh yeah, okay.
- 19:19All right, after spiky, said cinematography 110% amazing so
- 19:25much budget, went into this, so many humbly, tails, the
- 19:30costumes, the street, Only the make up the scenery giant stuff.
- 19:35He says structure architectural structures.
- 19:37Yeah the trolley many, the trolley, so many extras, just in
- 19:42a scene when I say extras, I mean like literal people in a
- 19:45scene, it's explosives. Fire pyro stunts, gunfire
- 19:50warship, slow motion action, which requires another like set
- 19:54of cinematography skills, Flags waving around a lot of stuff,
- 19:59burning to the ground during water.
- 20:02Filming. Yes.
- 20:03Underwater filming. So much money went into this and
- 20:06you feel it. It's just dripping with
- 20:09Hollywood type budget. Yeah, that's why I agreed to do.
- 20:13You say it's like Prestige watching us.
- 20:15I just like, like you and the beginning.
- 20:18I was like struggling to get into it and to like feel invest
- 20:20in them for like a while and I don't think for me it was the
- 20:22age Gap is just like because there are so doomed from the
- 20:26jump like I care. Is this end of just Doom over
- 20:30the whole show over every Character.
- 20:33You just I mean I don't know how someone can go through this and
- 20:36be like, I'm waiting for that episode 15.
- 20:39Like they wrap everything else and then 16 we get a wedding.
- 20:43Get this look XYZ? No, no, let's say they had a
- 20:46beach scene. What else do you want from them?
- 20:49Yes, exactly. They went to the beach.
- 20:53Damn it. We had a pig EIEIO.
- 20:55Yeah, which wasn't easy. And like the 1800's they
- 20:58literally. How are you getting to the beach
- 21:00from Seoul? Is back for days.
- 21:03I think they said it's like, we're not gonna We're not gonna
- 21:08talk about how you spend days writing to them.
- 21:11And multiple couples went to the beach and one couple to not have
- 21:14a horse. No one couple is just okay,
- 21:16we'll talk about it. That just piggyback all the way.
- 21:18Oh yeah, they're just gonna hoof it anyway.
- 21:22Yeah, a great sense if I could knock Rafi and the age Gap was a
- 21:26was a kind of a deal breaker, but I will say that towards the
- 21:31end. I I was invested in them for
- 21:34sure. We're talking about e begun and
- 21:36confettis characters, they obviously have I don't want to
- 21:41say a star-crossed lovers relationship but I guess it was
- 21:45the star-crossed lovers relationship.
- 21:49Yeah, it was just like everything was under duress in
- 21:52the gut in the gods. Just straight is a sucker punch
- 21:56throughout the whole show. Did you buy them as a couple?
- 22:02Actually, I don't know. I kept thinking that.
- 22:03I was like, wait why do they like each other?
- 22:05Like, I almost didn't get it but then I but then it did like
- 22:08something about it. Did make sense along the way it
- 22:10was a bit of a slow burn for me, Lisa where I didn't understand
- 22:13initially why, either them care about the other one.
- 22:15But then I was like, okay like they like I do think that some
- 22:19chemistry or something that seemed magnetic amongst them and
- 22:23maybe it's just their Stellar acting that there's just such
- 22:25good actors but they did have definitely I mean she's so good
- 22:29in everything, you know. Yeah.
- 22:31So So, I agree with you. I think there's something that
- 22:34wasn't written there on the page that they somehow made work on
- 22:39screen. And that is a, well said, that's
- 22:42all I can account for extremely accurate.
- 22:44Is because there was like apples.
- 22:47I know what's not anything? They're like they had certain
- 22:51crazy high intensity moments between them.
- 22:55But as far as like, why do you like each other?
- 23:00I don't know. Yeah.
- 23:02You know, right? They just kind of gravitate
- 23:04towards each other like two sides of a magnet and that's all
- 23:08there is to. It was very believable.
- 23:09Mmm. Yeah.
- 23:12What did you think of their secondary leads?
- 23:16And she has a couple, I know a couple.
- 23:20She just. Yeah.
- 23:21Well because if you think about like the character of Hina.
- 23:26Yeah, you know, and I feel like she also it was like something
- 23:30like, obviously, like, she's like, Like, not romantic, but
- 23:33like a sidekick or something. Like, she's I encounter with the
- 23:36like, you know, the samurai, the like the I can I say that's like
- 23:42we can say you can say yeah he's okay.
- 23:46He song and then Eugene and that you have the three of the three
- 23:50men. The little achy, she talking
- 23:53about and then you have Hina who and then you also have her very
- 23:58faithful enslaved. People Just lightly
- 24:02romanticized, I feel like, but yeah.
- 24:05But yeah, they're her servants. And all of that was like her
- 24:07orbit of people like the Gunner and all that.
- 24:09But there was a her orbit and she had so many good folks
- 24:13around her and she was the pull and the draw of all these people
- 24:16in a way, maybe less. So for Hina.
- 24:19But somewhat. And and it was very like I said
- 24:22believable, like it just seemed like you could sense, why
- 24:25there's so much like loyalty towards her wiser so much
- 24:27interest in her. Why is everyone like rally
- 24:29around her all the time? At what?
- 24:30Because sometimes you want your drama with some things?
- 24:32That supposed to be happening and you're just like, why did
- 24:33why can't you not like ditch that person or like, why are you
- 24:35still hung up on that person? But for confettis acting, or
- 24:40portrayal of it was so just overall, you know, Magna?
- 24:44Yeah, yeah. She was a great Rally Point for
- 24:46everybody. And you kind of unin neatly
- 24:49understood why everyone was trying to save her and make her
- 24:53survive and like have her and door and all this stuff while
- 24:56everyone else was kind of like it just is not the not the word.
- 25:02Expendable I guess I should say hmmm not disposable Expendable.
- 25:06Um, yeah, I see Jimmy Lord. So a lot of stuff happening it
- 25:13with the themes and the topics that we want to cover and we can
- 25:18introduce some of them. Now, I did want to touch really
- 25:20fast because you mentioned, he now, that character there are
- 25:24really strong female characters in this show and I admire that
- 25:27about it. I love how they're kicking ass
- 25:29and taking names. I love how they're integral
- 25:31part. Of the plot and how they are not
- 25:35passive at all. They're not passive Observer
- 25:40said the actress who played Hina didn't get any kind of award for
- 25:43this as far as I know, ideas for this role.
- 25:45And she was, oh my God, she was amazing.
- 25:48Yeah, what happened? What happened?
- 25:50To Kim Min Jong? I don't know.
- 25:52I don't know why she's not a better than either because I was
- 25:54looking at the stuff that she had done it.
- 25:55I was like, where did home girl go?
- 25:58Come on, not that much there too, right?
- 25:59Yeah. No, mmm.
- 26:01I'm confused about that, too. She was perfect fabulous.
- 26:05The Wardrobe days, put on her the turn of the century gowns,
- 26:08Stunning. She was serving in those
- 26:11outfits. Oh my God, amazing.
- 26:14She looks so good. And it was interesting because
- 26:16she was wearing kimono because she was like, a Japanese
- 26:18national she was wearing, like, maybe not handbook, exactly.
- 26:21But kind or sometimes maybe she was, she was wearing western
- 26:25clothes of the times, like late 1800's, early 1900's, I was like
- 26:281910s. Like bustling behind, you know,
- 26:30behind her and stuff like that. And like kind of waistcoats or
- 26:33what do they call those little coats and she just looked so
- 26:35good, little fascinator, hats. And I don't No, sometimes people
- 26:39who are not from a culture or a timeframe wearing, those things,
- 26:42look a little awkward. They look a little cosplay,
- 26:45through no fault of their own, but she was awaring, Anna.
- 26:47No, it's okay. We're not wearing her.
- 26:49She was wearing the glove, right?
- 26:51Yeah, right. It looks so good.
- 26:54And then her acting, of course, and then her athleticism.
- 26:57And yeah, her little looks a little, like little glances,
- 27:01just her little nose scrunch. Yeah, give that a 10 scrunch.
- 27:05I'm so glad you mentioned that. I don't have that in my notes,
- 27:07that was amazing. She really brought something to
- 27:10the show that was necessarily missing.
- 27:14I think that you needed another rallying point besides confettis
- 27:18character. And she is so charismatic and
- 27:21kind of easy to root for in certain moments.
- 27:23She a lot of the characters are not 100% good, A lot of the
- 27:29characters have Shades of Grey are not good, not bad.
- 27:34Just kind of going with the flow changing allegiances throughout
- 27:37the show. And not necessarily an emphasis
- 27:40on someone who's straight evil for evil cyclic, people have
- 27:46reasons for doing things, even the traders in the show have
- 27:50reasons for doing what they're doing.
- 27:53So, the Back stories were so rich.
- 27:55So rich for some, for the major characters, right?
- 27:58And some of them, we never some people might have Baxter's.
- 28:00Like I was like, what's the translators deal?
- 28:02Like Eugene's low? Personal translator guy like
- 28:04what's his story or like, you know, like some of the people I
- 28:07wanted more information. An honor like the woman who like
- 28:10takes the ferry over to their side and to the other Mountain.
- 28:13Yeah. Yeah, you know she's an Archer
- 28:15like what was her dealer like there's so many more characters
- 28:18that they were so interesting. I don't know what other word to
- 28:21use for interesting, but in make compelling, it was like what
- 28:23else is going on there? Because and the fact that you
- 28:25did know some people's Back stories to a great amount of
- 28:27detail. It was really like, oh my God
- 28:30there's so much more like layers upon layers upon layers.
- 28:32Yeah it's like an onion. This shows like an onion truly
- 28:35and so I did want to Got, oh my God, I'm gonna eat inside.
- 28:40I wanted to give attention to the female empowerment kind of
- 28:45side of it and I think we need to segue into just identity and
- 28:50Korean - as another theme throughout the show because
- 28:54there are so many characters who are grappling with being Korean
- 28:58American or Korean Japanese or Japanese Korean.
- 29:02Like, whatever the case is, they are not just one thing and they
- 29:07have so much Trauma in their backstory that they feel like
- 29:11they need to abandon their home country, home culture, and
- 29:17adopt. Another way of life or risk,
- 29:20just dying like in Korea, right? The self-preservation the
- 29:25survival ship that the reasons behind some of their stuff was.
- 29:29So again, compelling. And also it was definitely
- 29:33struck a nerve. I think of like I don't know.
- 29:36Like how do you survive all this stuff?
- 29:38Especially if for Hyun. I think she was a woman on top
- 29:40of all of it, right? Like she also has all these
- 29:42identity issues and, you know, yeah, trauma and everything
- 29:46going around. Yeah, going on with her, I
- 29:48should say. Yeah, we can definitely talk
- 29:50about their individual traumas later in the spoiler section,
- 29:54but I feel like the patriotism in the show was kind of like, if
- 30:02it was a graph, it was like kind of low at the beginning and kind
- 30:07of low is saying Something because the show is all about
- 30:10patriotism in a way. And then towards the later
- 30:13episodes, it just skyrockets. It's just an exponential growth
- 30:17towards the end and you feel, I mean, by the end, I was like,
- 30:21man, fuck Japan, like not going to lie, I'm not gonna lie.
- 30:26I was like, okay, but they dichotomy totally okay.
- 30:31So well not okay, this economy. I mean like they let me to Japan
- 30:33again. I want to, I want to visit Japan
- 30:36again. Please don't know.
- 30:37But To say that about this with the dichotomy between this
- 30:40intense amount of patriotism. Nationalism, the whole show
- 30:44overall is very nationalistic towards Korea which obviously
- 30:46makes sense. And yeah, there's this sense of
- 30:48like these unjust Japanese powers or sometimes American
- 30:51powers or sometimes like whoever Russia and Chinese and everybody
- 30:55was all up in Korea's Grill, I guess.
- 30:58But what was interesting was like this dichotomy of this
- 31:01patriotism nationalism and the fact that some people don't have
- 31:05that, right? Like someone's country could
- 31:06quote-unquote betray them. And you kind of belong, you
- 31:10belong, and you don't belong to the same time.
- 31:11That was like, I think a running theme for multiple characters.
- 31:14Of course, the main one being Eugene, but multiple characters
- 31:18where it's like you belong, you don't belong and then going back
- 31:20to the survivorship and trying to assimilate sort of, was like
- 31:23the fact that so many characters are trilingual builing you all,
- 31:28you know, again like with you know, wearing all she she can
- 31:31fit into anything like a glove. Like, as far as like identity
- 31:33and I even talked about the clothes in this point, but when
- 31:35she's a, you know, she's speaking French, she's speaking.
- 31:38Speaking Japanese just speaking Korean.
- 31:40Like, like she just had it going on like, in all different ways
- 31:43because she had to. And it was a very interesting
- 31:46because even though so nationalistic and patriotic and
- 31:49all the stuff in real, he's trying to stir up feelings for
- 31:51like, you know, Korea is a liberated country.
- 31:54It also have these moments where it's like actually some people
- 31:57are not that like thrill about Korea, you know, some people
- 31:59like, you know, Korea sucks. So yeah because of this stuff
- 32:02that they were going through and what what Justice or Injustice
- 32:05is they experienced, right? It's interesting.
- 32:08To see Korea portrayed in such a positive light as far as like
- 32:12nationalistic pride of Sauron throughout the show.
- 32:14But then you also see the absolute chaos behind the scenes
- 32:19of what like people are actively selling the country out and
- 32:24people who should be on the countryside are on the
- 32:26country's. Payroll are selling the country
- 32:28out. People who are trampled on and
- 32:32lowborn are low in society, are the ones who are rising up.
- 32:38And rebelling against Korea. So it's like a recreation pan of
- 32:44their own making, you know, Yeah, they've sown that see lead
- 32:49rebelling against Korea, are rebelling against Japan, or
- 32:52Bonneau rebelling against Korea because I totally mean to say
- 32:55like some characters again, like trauma have been just treated.
- 33:01So poorly by those in higher power in Korea that when they
- 33:07gain some semblance of power throughout the show, they come
- 33:10back with a vengeance. It's like karma for Korea as a
- 33:13whole to height. No, you're right.
- 33:16Your own citizens. Try and break it apart.
- 33:21You know, which is very intense, like, some characters.
- 33:23Like what Korea screwed anyway. So like, what's might as well be
- 33:26me the product data to it? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:31I think that, wow, we could talk a lot about identity.
- 33:34Korean is patriotism and all that too.
- 33:36But I think we touched on one of the last themes, which is
- 33:40classism and the slave economy and the discrimination and
- 33:44prejudice against low boards throughout the show, and how
- 33:48that affects the characters. And how they have to work
- 33:52through that throughout the show.
- 33:55Right. They have to live within that
- 33:57like Realm. Yeah, the hierarchy.
- 33:59Yeah, a lot of characters come back to Korea with a lot of
- 34:02prestige, or a lot of power, especially Eugene.
- 34:05And once they start talking about their history, where they
- 34:09came from, what their family is there, look down upon Eugene is
- 34:14looked down upon because he comes from the slave class and
- 34:19it is so deep-rooted the classism over there or the case
- 34:24system. However, Were you want to put
- 34:26it? It is unbelievable to me how
- 34:30some characters have experienced so much goodness and benefited
- 34:34from these characters that come from low Origins, and I put that
- 34:38in other words, in quotation, mark Lowe Origins.
- 34:41And then as soon as they find out, someone is not who they
- 34:44thought they were there. Like, oh my God, I have to
- 34:47rethink my entire, like, perception of you have to say
- 34:53this aspect made me feel like this show.
- 34:55Also, very pro-american in a way.
- 34:57Yes, Eugene was the one who had upward Mobility out of everybody
- 35:00who actually achieved it on, you know, more than you know really
- 35:03or more than go dong Mei. He's the one who like achieves
- 35:07it and it's because he moved to America and becomes he rise up.
- 35:10The US Military and becomes a marine and so he is like a top
- 35:14up there officer part of the American legation when he gets
- 35:18to Soul or hunting or things with the yeah, hon song.
- 35:21I was in name is Sol before it was.
- 35:22So yeah. Correct.
- 35:25So in hon song he's like and it's so funny how we kind of
- 35:28like kind of teachers between like I know Korean I speak
- 35:31Korean but I'm not as I'm like I'm not afraid.
- 35:34He's like I'm American like he just keeps like going back and
- 35:37forth because it's such a it's not like really black and white,
- 35:41her like this side or that side for him, just go back to
- 35:43Identity for second with, you know, we were moving past but
- 35:46before him it's it was like a little bit past the, but his
- 35:50yeah he himself can never forget his quote unquote lowborn status
- 35:54Is that he originally had that's like part of his like motivation
- 35:57for a lot of things in the chip on the show.
- 35:58Mama. Exactly.
- 36:01And then at the same time, he commands all this power and he
- 36:03walks around, looking all good and stuff and his suit and
- 36:06everyone's like, oh my God, who is that?
- 36:07And even like, even just from looking at him, when they're
- 36:10like, that guy looks Korean but they can everyone can talk.
- 36:13That is not a Korean guy. Like he is, he is the Foreigner.
- 36:16He's not crazy, looks Korean. That's where look.
- 36:18So, Chris mentality is completely changed.
- 36:20When he comes back to Korea, because he doesn't, he doesn't
- 36:23back down. He's got like the American like,
- 36:27Spirit about him, which is weird.
- 36:30So everybody in the show because they're like, you look and sound
- 36:33Korean, but you are not Korean because you would not have
- 36:35talked to me that way if you were Korean.
- 36:37And I would argue to, he doesn't even with Japanese soldiers and
- 36:41stuff, because they don't go into how much or time he spent
- 36:44in Japan are like, why he's so fluent in Japan?
- 36:46Japanese. I don't think they did unless I
- 36:48missed it, but he also has the same kind of like, you know,
- 36:51he's just America that's actually American.
- 36:53Like, you just have this like Like Swag, yeah about it.
- 36:56When you're talking in Japanese or they're addressing Japanese
- 36:59people addressing Korean people. He's just like kind of similarly
- 37:02like like what are you gonna do to me?
- 37:05Exactly, like I'm American, you cannot touch me.
- 37:09That is the attitude that he has throughout the show, and it
- 37:13really irks a lot of characters and they call him out on it.
- 37:16They're like, well, you must be American, which is kind of funny
- 37:20to stereotypical entitled. Yes.
- 37:22To watch the It on screen from EPO and then who he's doing
- 37:28great great. He's nailing to me, it's like as
- 37:31an American. I'm like yeah, man, that's it,
- 37:35you got it, you know. I know this is like he was he
- 37:40would smile. So broadly and so toothy, as
- 37:43soon as he encountered other American soldiers, he's like,
- 37:46hey, like to everyone and I was like, that's so American is like
- 37:49Miley and bears. Like I felt a little called out
- 37:51like that. How I run around the world like
- 37:53girls. Like, Bro.
- 37:56Do I just smile at everybody? Well I'm from Miami is
- 37:59different. We might not smile at everybody,
- 38:02kind of mean, but it's okay. Yeah, I really like, you know,
- 38:06like that whole like effervescence that stereotypical
- 38:09effervescence because, you know, I lived for many years in New
- 38:11York and they're not smiling everybody.
- 38:12There be just like that that that aspect of it was so
- 38:16embarrassed, so much bravado coming from him at times and
- 38:20yeah, I kind of I feel it's active.
- 38:25I feel a certain type of way, seeing it on screen portrayed by
- 38:28you being good, but it's great. I do think that the
- 38:31american-ness of the show is something that was taking me
- 38:35aback as well and how they perceived America.
- 38:39I don't think anyone here, you know, us to our under any
- 38:43delusions, like America sucks and it's also very great like in
- 38:47equal measure and our history is just as terrible as everybody
- 38:51else's country. And at one point, Like I can
- 38:54remember which character says it's like year.
- 38:56You also believe him in imperialism because of Puerto
- 39:01Rico Guam, the Philippines like a names all of these
- 39:03territories. Well, I don't even Korea, we
- 39:05still did this day have huge military bases in Korea.
- 39:08So, right. Well, I mean, effectively, like,
- 39:10did we call an Eis? It maybe not, but we are there.
- 39:13We're definitely there. Are there more?
- 39:16It's still ongoing. But anyway, because they needed
- 39:18evidently, um, yeah, but maybe not every Korean person thrilled
- 39:23about that. Even to this day and I totally
- 39:26get that. I totally get that.
- 39:27Yeah, how a foot hold in so many different places that I don't
- 39:32think Americans even realize and yeah, it's it is like that
- 39:37imperialism that, I think it was a Japanese Colonel that was
- 39:40talking about it. He was like, I am no different
- 39:43than you are. Like we're here to do the same
- 39:45thing essentially that you did in all these other places.
- 39:47Yeah, which is crazy. Like to me, it's like, you know,
- 39:51pot calling the kettle, black, you know, No, no one is good in
- 39:56this show. Everyone is all kinds of Shades
- 39:58of Grey anyway. Yeah, I feel like we ventured a
- 40:02little bit into spoiler territory.
- 40:03So, I think we can break for spoilers.
- 40:06What would you give this show out of five Soju bottles?
- 40:11Okay. It's hard because it was so
- 40:12beautiful and stunning but then sometimes I like wasn't feeling
- 40:16it and then sometimes I feel like I was so engrossed in,
- 40:18like, the political aspects. I didn't care what the Romantic
- 40:20aspect sometimes. I was like, wait, what happened
- 40:22to romance, you know, or whatever?
- 40:24So I would say, three out of five so Jews because of that.
- 40:30But but like you said, like everything you said, still
- 40:32stands, like definitely worthwhile.
- 40:34Yeah. When the show ended, I was like,
- 40:36oh my God, this is, I was writing a high, right?
- 40:39This is a 5 out of 5. G.
- 40:41Oh my God, it's so good. Now, I'm sitting here talking
- 40:43about it and I'm kind of like, taking a step back.
- 40:46I feel like it's probably a four out of five show four out of
- 40:49five Soju bottles for me because again, so many positives great
- 40:54production, amazing stunning production, but is it?
- 40:58My favorite story? Did I have a full grasp of
- 41:01everything that was going on? I feel like they were I was
- 41:03playing 20 chess games at the same time instead of one chess
- 41:06game. That's what it felt like to
- 41:07follow this. Yeah, well, I was like, oh I was
- 41:09here, we're here. Oh, this is romance chess.
- 41:11Bored. Oh, this is the secondary,
- 41:12Romans chessboard, like, oh, we're doing like all these
- 41:14things. And that is a little bit
- 41:17frustrating at the end of the day because what what did you
- 41:22like about the show? Was that everything was just a
- 41:24couple of chess boards? Was it all the chess boards.
- 41:27So I feel like it's a 4 out of 5.
- 41:30I think if you watch it one more time because this was my second
- 41:32viewing and you may like a just a little bit or at least have a
- 41:35better focus on like what you did or didn't like about it
- 41:38because yeah, it was a lot to take in At once, it's so like
- 41:42hyper stimulating, cuz you're like, what is happening?
- 41:44And then the second time you watch, you're like, oh yeah, you
- 41:47know, I get it. Like, for me at least it made a
- 41:49lot more sense as I bent. All right?
- 41:51We're going to get into spoilers right after this.
- 42:01You want to come in. Okay, we're on the other side of
- 42:04spoilers. We're going to spoil their shit
- 42:05out on mr. Sunshine right now and
- 42:07everything is on the table, all the chess boards are available.
- 42:10To us to talk about. So Mina, I think you wanted to
- 42:14start with the historical aspect of the show and go into some of
- 42:19your research, because I, yes, I think this is going to help
- 42:23ground as a little bit both in our discussion and for the
- 42:25people who watch it, but don't remember or wash and don't
- 42:28really know what they all watched.
- 42:29So just clear that I'm not like an expert in Korean history or
- 42:32like a Korean studies Professor or something.
- 42:34But I did read a few things. One of the main things are roses
- 42:37book called Korea, history by Eugene, why park?
- 42:39That's where most of my information.
- 42:40Images from. And then I'll also send you some
- 42:43links that you can post for other articles and stuff if you
- 42:45guys are interested. So first I want to talk about
- 42:48was just the class system, we were talking about earlier so
- 42:51the aristocracy the Choson area era I should say was called the
- 42:55Young bun. So aristocracy was young but
- 42:57that's like lady a she and you became young men through your
- 43:01family lineage. So if your ancestors were young
- 43:03Bond you inherited that title. You were young but as well.
- 43:08However, if a young man produced a child with, Enslaved person.
- 43:11This child would inherit the enslaved, parents status so they
- 43:18could not ever be young but aristocracy those of us growing
- 43:21up in the United States or learned US History.
- 43:23It's a little bit similar to in that sense of it at least a
- 43:26similar to u.s. slavery, right? So young bun, mainly where
- 43:31landowners, and that land was farmed for food and was worked
- 43:34by the enslaved. People.
- 43:37And a lot of young men were government officials or Scholars
- 43:40of ISM, which is what we saw. Lady issuance fought
- 43:42grandfather. I believe he was like making her
- 43:44study Confucian Confucius. Yeah.
- 43:49Below young Ben were the Chun in class, and I could be Miss
- 43:51pressing all this, so sorry, but they were kind of in between
- 43:54young bun and commoners and a lot of young Chilean I should
- 43:57say, a lot of chicken, were lower level Military Officers,
- 44:00or other government office workers.
- 44:01So, including those interpreters who work for the government,
- 44:04such as the ones we saw translating for the King, on the
- 44:06show, I believe would be considered chunin and Below
- 44:09Champion were commoners. Yeah, so commoners were often,
- 44:12Hindi crafters and Merchants. So, the baker, the Potter, the
- 44:16metalsmith characters in the show would probably be That are
- 44:19commoners. So then at the very bottom of
- 44:22the social hierarchy, we have the so-called lowborn, most of
- 44:25which were enslaved people or as they're called in Korean the no
- 44:28be, and no be could be purchased or inherited through young buns
- 44:32family. But unlike slavery, here in the
- 44:34US, no be were ethnically Korean.
- 44:36So didn't have those like racial and ethnic differences as you
- 44:39might have guessed is from watching the show that it's like
- 44:42people in the US had so it was not uncommon for it was not
- 44:47uncommon for. Or no be to run away and and
- 44:51then just get wage paying jobs or just try and make a living in
- 44:54other ways. And there were slave catchers,
- 44:56who have to go find them paid for by the young bright.
- 44:59And I'm not gonna get into like the details of like how slavery
- 45:01and Korea sort of ended, it took some time.
- 45:03It was a bit. Gradual wasn't like any
- 45:05emancipation like we had here in the US, but it basically, what
- 45:09it boils down to is a lot of, like, money stuff, as with
- 45:11everything, you know, having no be was cost costly having to pay
- 45:17catchers for them was also, Very costly.
- 45:19And after a while, I was just like, you know what?
- 45:20We may as well just higher wage workers to work early and right,
- 45:23so that was one thing I wanted to mention.
- 45:26Yeah, it seems like in the show, it is, on the, I guess it's
- 45:31taking place just after this sort of grand emancipation of
- 45:36slaves in Korea. And now those slave hunters and
- 45:40people that work for the young bonds are able to leave able to
- 45:44work for a wage for the same family or what have you but
- 45:48yeah. As in 1894, I believe these.
- 45:50When they formally abolished AC and then a lot of it is still.
- 45:53Yes, a lot of characters were referencing.
- 45:55Like it's a new world, you know. There is no more young Bond and
- 46:01no be or but they're kind of still.
- 46:03Was it just through like for example, the butcher Butcher
- 46:07discrimination, so the Google made was a butcher's son and we
- 46:11see in the beginning to show when I still like the early
- 46:131800s, when no be were still thing, the butcher's are treated
- 46:16so badly. So poorly Really looked down
- 46:19upon and that really continues into Japanese Occupation zones
- 46:22like the 30s, 1932 20s and 30s. So that continued and one kind
- 46:27of notable thing about nobody who are more or less emancipated
- 46:30to certain extent because it was like, seeing with America to
- 46:33like, people were emancipated. But then you still had people
- 46:35who are working on farms still and working as labourers still
- 46:39have with really reduced wages. But in Korea, one thing I
- 46:43noticed I was interesting different from the US.
- 46:45I think, was that they had this sort of freedom to Kind of adopt
- 46:49a new identity. So a lot of people would take
- 46:51would who became emancipated or left the nobody system adopted
- 46:56surnames of aristocratic, I'm asked this.
- 46:58So like him, we park. Yeah.
- 47:00Everybody else. Like noble families last names.
- 47:03Yeah. And they wanted to be associated
- 47:04with the young bongs these great noble families.
- 47:07And so they just be like, oh yeah, I'm a toy.
- 47:09Oh yeah, I'm Ali. Yeah.
- 47:11Oh, I'll and they just during this time period.
- 47:13There was a lot of like, people just taking last names for the
- 47:16first time because people didn't have last names.
- 47:19Only the Young fans had right, needs is crazy.
- 47:22And then one other thing I want to mention kind of related to
- 47:25women and likely d--ation situation was that during chosen
- 47:29era, they were really into neo-confucianism and this like
- 47:31hold because they didn't have as much in the choreo or Sheila
- 47:34dynasties or in this exact way where women suddenly had to
- 47:37switch with your Noble or like lady Asian.
- 47:39You had to be personally, had to be married so that you could
- 47:43have a son. So could carry on the your name,
- 47:45your lineage or inheritance you're young bun status and And
- 47:48if you didn't have a son, like, for example, lady issues,
- 47:51grandfather didn't have one cause she was refused and get
- 47:53married and her her aunt's never had any sons.
- 47:56So you could adopt your brother's son or son of a cousin
- 47:59on your father's side and make them an air.
- 48:01But illegitimate Sons could not be heirs in because his new
- 48:04neo-confucianism daughters just could not have property rights
- 48:07or inheritance rights as women but they did have to cover their
- 48:10faces so you see Lady issue and traveling her little palanquin.
- 48:14I don't know perhaps that properly, that little like I
- 48:15said palanquins and then I could be wrong palanquin right?
- 48:19Yeah, and then that like head covering, it looks like it looks
- 48:21like a skirt. Looks like the start of a
- 48:23handbook is called the tsukishima, which is, which I
- 48:25could, my parents are so get Chima.
- 48:27So team has skirt and Koreans. It's like a scarf or they
- 48:29actually it's formatted. Meaning, they cut a little bit
- 48:31shorter and stuff. So it's really for, as like a
- 48:33headdress of, yeah, it looks a little, like, a look ahead
- 48:36Korean so. So especially if you're a noble
- 48:37woman, you cannot be seen by men and then also the top not worn
- 48:42by men in joseon Era and the beginning, but until they like
- 48:44move into this Western modernization, had to do with
- 48:47Confucian filial people. Piety.
- 48:49So you are prohibited from tampering with your body because
- 48:52that you got that body from your parents age like preserve its to
- 48:55honor your parents and your parents gave you your hair and
- 48:57all this stuff, so you can't cut it and that becomes a major kind
- 49:01of player later in the show, when she gets her care, try
- 49:05that. And also, when she gets her hair
- 49:07chopped off, and also the fact, but as the Korea's modernizing,
- 49:10right, they're starting to so the King, which we see in the
- 49:12show can call John. He was someone who's trying to
- 49:14intrude like really cooperate, the West make Korea, more
- 49:17modern, he introduced electricity, what you see?
- 49:18Sort of in the show he as you see like he's this artist adopt
- 49:23kind of its of his Royal robes. He's wearing like Western can I
- 49:25have some? Yeah a lot of the guys start
- 49:27chopping off their Top Knots intentionally because they're
- 49:30sort of moving this direction. Some people really displeased
- 49:33with King Kong's, trying to like you know make treaties with like
- 49:36different countries specially like Germany, England America.
- 49:40He was trying really hard because a lot of those treaties
- 49:42were kind of imbalance and So Korea.
- 49:44Can I have the underhand? Yeah, you know, they have more
- 49:46power. They more things.
- 49:47The tree is he had with Japan. Was you can't.
- 49:48Member if he had made them or someone else made them, it was
- 49:51stuff like Japan. Could explore as much rice as
- 49:52they wanted and never paid a tariff.
- 49:54Native never paid. A tax is sometimes led to things
- 49:56like rice George's for Koreans and so they're like having to
- 49:59re-import back their own rice. That was expert in Japan like
- 50:02that is something that was persisting for decades after
- 50:05this time period. Because I think we leave off in
- 50:08the show in like nineteen. Oh, seven or eight or something
- 50:10and Pachinko takes place decades later.
- 50:14And I mean they're talking about like rice is only for the
- 50:18Japanese white rice, looks the commoner people just don't eat
- 50:23rice. They eat barley rice which is
- 50:25like a Spore type of rice and they're eating that in this show
- 50:29to their like, eating raw barbarous because they can't
- 50:32freaking create a fire because they'll be find out.
- 50:34So they're eating literally raw barley wheat or rice and it's
- 50:39insane to see some of these things crop up.
- 50:42And another Prestige television show like Pachinko, which I keep
- 50:45bringing up and go. It's because we did a deep dive
- 50:47on the podcast. They go.
- 50:49So if you want to listen to that course grow back.
- 50:51But honestly, it is very interesting to hear all of the
- 50:56history that you just explained. And I love that you went into
- 51:00the, the kind of I think up not upheaval but like the changes
- 51:06that were happening during this time period and the type of
- 51:11environment that we're in like the classism and why is it so
- 51:15like such a thing? It's because that was the thing
- 51:17back then. You know it's like you doing a
- 51:21civil war movie, you're going to talk about like the north versus
- 51:25South, you know what I'm saying? Yes.
- 51:27Like, that's the thing that really brings me to that point
- 51:29of Eugene having this upper Mobility that until they like
- 51:33That even though they were like emancipate, adjust.
- 51:35It was a band. I should say.
- 51:36It was banned for them. There to be, no be anymore.
- 51:39It wasn't like, instantaneous, like we're all free like you
- 51:41hasn't like when I figure out what you're going to do, what's
- 51:43your new hustle and like, right? And some people stayed because
- 51:45it's like well this is familiar and that's what I know.
- 51:47So my child leave and like we had a good family owned and they
- 51:49never beat you and they never do.
- 51:50Yeah. So like you did you stay?
- 51:52Yeah, things like that happened here in America with when cyber
- 51:56slavery was ended as well. It was kind of like you have to
- 52:01create a whole new life for yourself.
- 52:02Like, what do you do? So I think it's very believable
- 52:06that Ashen radiation. Still has like her maids and her
- 52:12servants around her and they just are super loyal to her
- 52:15because they evidently worked for a very good family and he
- 52:18treated him well and he you know, did really good things
- 52:22toward the end of the show, which were groundbreaking.
- 52:24He was giving them property literally just giving them his
- 52:27property based on like seniority.
- 52:29Essentially, if you worked for me, for 30 years, you can have
- 52:32more property. Of my property.
- 52:34If you work for me for 20 years, you get this plot of land.
- 52:36Like it was very interesting to see how he ended up kind of
- 52:41righting the wrongs of his class by just being good to his
- 52:46servants. Well, this idea of like almost
- 52:49reparations comes up a lot because at first, like I was
- 52:51saying in the beginning, I feel like the servants added towards
- 52:54and like they're just kind of like literal bowing and scraping
- 52:57tool ADHD and was a little irking.
- 52:59Yes. Because like what is this?
- 53:01Like this is so annoying but then Eugene basically called rat
- 53:04is like hey just like I was no be like when he finally
- 53:07confesses that he was one when he originally was he was
- 53:10originally quote-unquote lowborn and he's like you know, your
- 53:14servants, your homegrown, your whole way there.
- 53:16Those people saying to her, I forgot but they They are, they
- 53:18can't do the things that I couldn't do when I was no be,
- 53:21you know, they are and then she's having this like
- 53:23realization moment, I think, in he song her fiance, when he is
- 53:27like realizing like, oh my God, my family screwed over Eugene's
- 53:30family killed, his parents, and he's starting to like try and
- 53:33make. Also, I think very much feel
- 53:35like reparations, like he finds the guy who got beat because his
- 53:38watch was broken and he's like, you know, doing all these
- 53:40things. And so these people have these,
- 53:41these nobility people are having these Enlightenment moments,
- 53:45which I like I said that's like what part of the payoff thing we
- 53:47like, yeah. Yeah.
- 53:48Look you wanna see that but it's also like so interesting that
- 53:52they are showing this because it does it seem as nationalistic as
- 53:55it's like hey we were having our own problems to like we weren't
- 53:58perfect before, a Japanese showed up and then they ruined
- 54:00everything and now you know, like wasn't anything.
- 54:03Yeah. The narrative, some dramas maybe
- 54:05show her some some depictions of stuff show but uh-huh.
- 54:07Right. Yeah, I think I realized this go
- 54:10for it. No, I'm just going to finish.
- 54:13But just by saying, like this, the fact that people were having
- 54:15these epiphanies in the show, the characters of like, oh my
- 54:18gosh, like I contributed to this terrible system of Oppression
- 54:21and we're trying to free and liberate Korea but like we have
- 54:23oppression in Korea, Jenny way, you know, fry whole classes of
- 54:27people. Right was was definitely like
- 54:29part of that payoff. Like yeah.
- 54:31Yeah I love when he confronts her and finally says what his
- 54:34Origins are and she's stunned into silence and he basically
- 54:41challenges her Her. And he says, who are you fucking
- 54:44fighting for? Like is it for everybody?
- 54:47Or is it just for the young Bond?
- 54:49Are you trying to free Korea from all of these Western
- 54:52influences and from Japan? The all terrible Japan for just
- 54:55your class or is it for everyone?
- 54:57Is it for the butcher's for me for the slaves.
- 55:01You know what is this new world that you're trying to create is
- 55:03a just to benefit you and I love how an episode like 10 or 11.
- 55:09She says my world came crumbling down what a thing to say.
- 55:13She just never considered his Origins.
- 55:16She says I just felt weird. Is that I just assumed you were
- 55:19Young Band like a nobleman? Yeah.
- 55:22Yeah. But before that, it was dull met
- 55:24as a child. Right?
- 55:25Who like wakes her up a little bit in the palanquins.
- 55:28Break, is he? He is like escaping his Your
- 55:31situation and she sees him all like kind of looking
- 55:34blood-streaked and she say so no questions asked in my.
- 55:38Yeah. And then once he gets in, he's
- 55:40like you're just a fool Rich fool who like it lives in
- 55:43comfort. And what the hell do you know?
- 55:44Like, it's it, that was like, her first taste of like Reality
- 55:47Bites. Like, you know, like, oh my gosh
- 55:49slapped with this truth bomb. And so that kind of, she says
- 55:53later, like that stayed with like that.
- 55:55Haunted me, my whole, yes, whatever.
- 55:57The last thing she says to him and and he's like, well good.
- 56:01Then yeah whatever okay good I changed our world view but I
- 56:05know he meant it also was good. You just you thought of me
- 56:08because he was in love with her he right?
- 56:10He meant it as like you remember me?
- 56:12Like it was weird because weird but it did have like it has
- 56:15multiple purposes in the end, I guess for her, as like, her
- 56:18character development, like she had that first taste of it and
- 56:21then she had Eugene, you know, tell yourself, I think even
- 56:24meeting. He know, you know.
- 56:26Yeah you do. Yeah I heard I just are holding,
- 56:27how could he know? And she didn't know all of maybe
- 56:30he knows. Baggage.
- 56:31But I think she knew like, okay like you're hustling you're out
- 56:35here. You have like a story and she's
- 56:37wrestling. Wait I've been couched in like a
- 56:38luxury my whole life and I wine every single day about it you
- 56:41know. Yeah she's bitching for nothing
- 56:44and not that she's bitching. The whole show is just like
- 56:46little things here and there but you're like, shut up like
- 56:48everyone at some point. Says, Sheehan in so many words.
- 56:52Like shut up. You're an old cabin like you
- 56:55live a great life and just so many people were like, don't do
- 56:59this. Just go back to your, like,
- 57:00little Yeah. People were like dunk it
- 57:02involved. It's very serious.
- 57:04It's so dangerous. Just go back to your cushy life
- 57:06and she's always like, no, I don't want to and continues on
- 57:10her. Merry suicidal way.
- 57:13She says, I one point I thought I was different from other
- 57:16Nobles, but I wasn't the cause I fought for was nothing but
- 57:19ironic, which I was like, damn, that sucks to suck because she
- 57:24was fine. She thought she was fighting for
- 57:27something. Good.
- 57:28Should even know the whole story should know who was calling the
- 57:30shots in the Righteous army or nothing.
- 57:33She was just Flying Blind and then she realizes like, what am
- 57:36I even fighting for? Who am I fighting for?
- 57:39And it like threw her for a loop.
- 57:43It is and I do think the backstory of her parents being
- 57:46kind of the first righteous Army.
- 57:48Yeah, like whatever that pose a call that then but like
- 57:50revolutionaries or whatever. And so she was both.
- 57:53I don't know, I couldn't tell what her motivations where I let
- 57:55me know what you think, but it was it like carry on this mantle
- 57:57of her parents as a coal deal. Or was she this just this page?
- 58:01Periodic for some reason even though like she did nothing.
- 58:03She didn't she wanted for nothing.
- 58:05So, like, she's fighting for this.
- 58:06Like what her luxury life like, I know it's not that, but let
- 58:09her jump at first, I was struggling to really.
- 58:11Yes, tell me I'm going to jump in here because I really feel
- 58:14like it's because she was so educated.
- 58:17Like her grandfather doted on her and educated Her Way, Beyond
- 58:23what a woman should have been educated for during that time
- 58:26period. And then she started, she just
- 58:28has a rebellious Spirit about her.
- 58:30I feel And so, she started reading the newspaper.
- 58:33He didn't want her to read the newspaper.
- 58:34He didn't want her to get up to date on current events.
- 58:37He didn't water to know what's going on in the government and
- 58:39she was extremely interested in that and she it kind of like lit
- 58:42a fire in her because, you know, when they tell you not to do
- 58:45something, first of all, you're getting as a teenager going to
- 58:48want to do it even now, I'm kind of like, well, I'll do it anyway
- 58:51and she definitely had a little bit of that in her, but also,
- 58:55she just felt such a moral responsibility, even as a child,
- 58:59saving the butcher, son dong Mei.
- 59:01Yeah, she thought she knew it was the right thing to do.
- 59:04She had a great moral compass. And you know, it's only later
- 59:08that people start like, talking about, like, how you're more her
- 59:11moral compass, isn't that all that pointing North?
- 59:15So, yeah, well, that's my fans. Ironically, she was so like, you
- 59:19know, on her high horse about like, you know, I'm not like the
- 59:21other Nobles but then she's like bring my penguin and then it's
- 59:26like like bring that letter to me or whatever it is.
- 59:28She's doing all that. Like, nobilities just very hot
- 59:31here. Like yeah, super snobby.
- 59:33It's not because she's even the fact that she is willing to
- 59:36marry he song just like I know for her as a bit hypothetical
- 59:39because he's away for so long. He's very conveniently just like
- 59:41not showing all right to marry her and he was but she was still
- 59:44she and no point was like I'm not really like I'm until like
- 59:47he showed up in her face and was like oh crap I got pound.
- 59:49Okay. But until then she's just like
- 59:51yeah then it's almost like yeah okay I'll marry whatever and
- 59:53then like I found it interesting that she didn't fight that
- 59:55earlier but maybe that's me, just putting hairs and being
- 59:58nitpicky about this. You're right, I agree.
- 1:00:01With that, that she seemed to be okay with marrying.
- 1:00:04Who song when she would like 10 years ago, I guess when she was
- 1:00:0820, or maybe 19 years old, or like, yeah, she was like 19 and
- 1:00:14that's when they got engaged and then he like fucked off to
- 1:00:15Japan. Which is why that I was like for
- 1:00:19him. He like why did he go away?
- 1:00:22And not come back. Because he was.
- 1:00:23So lonely, had all these like, kind of superficial seem like
- 1:00:26vacuous relationships in Japan, was just like smoking, drinking
- 1:00:29gambling reading like, right? Like itself, important things,
- 1:00:32and then like, not coming back to Korea.
- 1:00:34He was so lonely, because like I felt his loneliness and I was
- 1:00:37like, why you just come here and marry her sooner.
- 1:00:39When you were finished rather than just like, extending your
- 1:00:41school or whatever he was doing in Japan like a guy?
- 1:00:44I think he was also in since the same way that she was rebelling.
- 1:00:48She was rebelling against his own family, which he felt like
- 1:00:50was such a burden. His family was such a burden on
- 1:00:53him. Everything they did cost
- 1:00:55something someone else their livelihood or their lives and
- 1:01:00so, So I feel like he truly felt burdened by the responsibilities
- 1:01:05of the family and somehow innately knew that everybody in
- 1:01:10his family was doing something wrong or had wrong to others.
- 1:01:14And I think he was just just avoiding like just deny that I
- 1:01:19avoiding in Japan, having a good time in Japan, trying to fill
- 1:01:22this void with all this crap that you mentioned like studying
- 1:01:26for 10 years and women and just being a romantic.
- 1:01:31Take this. Is this what she says to him as
- 1:01:33well? Kim Teddy's character says to
- 1:01:37me, Bianca and like, oh, we're living in the Romantic Era.
- 1:01:39People tell me. We're living in the Romantic Era
- 1:01:41and it's very true for whose tongues character because he's
- 1:01:47living a romantic fantasy, you know what he likes.
- 1:01:50He loves useless things, you know.
- 1:01:51Yeah, he loves uses to keep say that this is like x-ray looks
- 1:01:54the star in the moon's like whatever he was saying stars in
- 1:01:57the moons and the flowers and all this shit like he's just a
- 1:01:59hippie. And he comes back finally.
- 1:02:03And for some reason, he thinks not to talk to his family.
- 1:02:06First, he goes to visit his fiance with whom.
- 1:02:08He's never seen in his life before.
- 1:02:12Yeah. But he's like, I love him and
- 1:02:14he's ready love at first sight because he sees her, and he's
- 1:02:16like, perfect. I need that flower in my life
- 1:02:19for the rest of my life. And he regret staying away for
- 1:02:22so long. Because she's just so stunning,
- 1:02:24right? She's beautiful.
- 1:02:26And what she is, she is no doubt, but I I feel you on
- 1:02:31Nitpicks though, I'm feeling on, like, what is this motivation?
- 1:02:36And, like, for 10 years or 10 years?
- 1:02:39It is not a short amount of time that these people are rebelling
- 1:02:44in their way, their own ways, right?
- 1:02:47Yeah, I have to go back to the acting with of the guy who
- 1:02:50played he song like his ability, because he had so much more
- 1:02:54like, people just like he's a dummy which you kind of was, but
- 1:02:56then he kind of like had more going on if he like, put any
- 1:02:59effort into like rubbing and she brings us together.
- 1:03:01Warming up thought he kind of like had like because when he
- 1:03:04would you agree to be like hahaha I am.
- 1:03:06He's yeah everybody was and and then he went, he could like turn
- 1:03:09that stuff off and on when he was like, trying to
- 1:03:11strategically help everybody else.
- 1:03:13He was also the way he was initially submitted by issuing.
- 1:03:17He was smitten with dong Mei smitten with Eugene and I was
- 1:03:21like, he just is on with everybody.
- 1:03:22Like he is like a rabbit's. He wanted his ready to be their
- 1:03:25friends. He's ready to throw down as much
- 1:03:27as he could. He loves Hina like he loved
- 1:03:29everybody. And he's like this is my Crew
- 1:03:31and he kind of made them. The interesting thing is that he
- 1:03:34made them the glue kind of or he was the glue to make them like a
- 1:03:36crew because otherwise like Hina did have her pull and then is
- 1:03:40she had her pull but otherwise like the real glue.
- 1:03:43I think, to my opinion anyway, was he saw his character and I
- 1:03:45think the acting was so good where he seems both like, like
- 1:03:49tacky vacuous. Kind of like a Playboy who just
- 1:03:52like you want to dismiss. Yeah he's like no I'm her.
- 1:03:54Actually, I'm really so lonely and I'm really hurt and I have
- 1:03:56all these like Deep Emotions. That is a little hard for him to
- 1:03:59like Express pinpoint and Say, but he has them, and the way
- 1:04:03they liked his character develops was also, of course.
- 1:04:05Well written. But his acting I thought was
- 1:04:07again. He, this guy just might be my
- 1:04:09type and his like, you know, but I like to see his old y'all.
- 1:04:14Yeah. Like he's like this
- 1:04:16stereotypical pretty boy from a rich family and in kdrama like
- 1:04:20these guys you you end up rooting for them because they're
- 1:04:24so charming and they have everything going for them and he
- 1:04:29liked by all accounts, he should have ended.
- 1:04:31With actions character because he's formatted in kdrama land.
- 1:04:36Like, oh, he sacrificed her? That's like part of his
- 1:04:38preparations. Like, think he was on.
- 1:04:40He's like, you know what? I'll give that up.
- 1:04:43I don't understand like obviously I can understand him
- 1:04:46giving her up because she didn't love him.
- 1:04:48Right? And he's somehow very honorable
- 1:04:51and was like, yeah, it's so I'm not going to marry someone who
- 1:04:54doesn't want me. Cool.
- 1:04:56Yeah, but then it also veered into that reparation, sing where
- 1:05:00he was like Well, if she loves Eve young'uns character, If he,
- 1:05:03if she loves Eugene and my family has done everything wrong
- 1:05:06to Eugene and taking everything from him.
- 1:05:09Like, how am I going to take her from him?
- 1:05:12Right. So I feel kind of conflicted
- 1:05:16about like why he let her go because I don't necessarily want
- 1:05:19to be a reparations thing. I wanted to be just like a good
- 1:05:22man. I know at one point, he says to
- 1:05:25Eugene himself when he was like, oh you do this or he said
- 1:05:27something about like, oh you let her go or whatever, like you're
- 1:05:29not following her. And he's like, not because they
- 1:05:31you, he's like, she wants to be a free woman.
- 1:05:34She was live her own life and I did appreciate that.
- 1:05:36He, the said to me, at least Express to Eugene was definitely
- 1:05:38out of pettiness. Like, he's are not going to
- 1:05:40admit that, it's for you. And though, I did feel like I
- 1:05:42Like it was all. So for him it or like the whole
- 1:05:44I did like the reparations, they had a component and that's but
- 1:05:46the fact that he was like, she wants to live her life and
- 1:05:49literally, no one will let her do that.
- 1:05:50Like a grandfather won't, everyone's hired as put down her
- 1:05:53gun and like, start being a lady.
- 1:05:54Like he's like, I'm gonna let her do what she wants to do.
- 1:05:56Like, I respected that so much. Maybe I'm giving him too much
- 1:05:59credit. The bar is low.
- 1:06:01Yeah, look, we can talk about the patriarchy for a second
- 1:06:04because her life is basically in Revolt of the patriarchy and it
- 1:06:12At 16. I think she really does try and
- 1:06:13go against like hundreds of years of patriarchy when she
- 1:06:17just refuses to get married at all.
- 1:06:19Like she tells her Jeep. Ah, I always say Jeep on side of
- 1:06:22Grandpa bass, tells her Jeep on that.
- 1:06:25She's just not going to get married at all.
- 1:06:27Nobody, and he's consistently wanted her to take a husband.
- 1:06:32So she's protected and that he can be her Shields and all this
- 1:06:36stuff. And I love that.
- 1:06:38She says that she's trained for 10 years so she doesn't Need a
- 1:06:42shield at all. All she wants is to give her
- 1:06:46heart to the man. She loves no marriage and I was
- 1:06:49like that is groundbreaking even today like, yeah, it is such a
- 1:06:54noble intention. She kind of like, does this
- 1:06:56whole speech with her Grandpa because she needs no shallow or
- 1:07:02stereotypical security from a man, she just wants the luxury
- 1:07:05of love affection and it's really beautiful.
- 1:07:09She does not as a character follow through.
- 1:07:12You on that because she chooses the righteous cause does not
- 1:07:16give in to look this romantic ideal of just loving a man for
- 1:07:19loving a man and ultimately Eugene's character Bales her out
- 1:07:24at the end of the movie at movie.
- 1:07:26Look at me at the end of the movie, at the end of the show,
- 1:07:30he is like helping her to no end and he sells her at one point.
- 1:07:36Like, you cannot. You have not repaid me at all
- 1:07:39for, literally everything that I've done for you.
- 1:07:42The least that you can do is stay with me.
- 1:07:44Like, stay by my side, of course.
- 1:07:46Like, that's the tried-and-true kdrama line.
- 1:07:48Like, just stay by my side and she doesn't, she's like, no, in
- 1:07:54fact, she tries to break up with him.
- 1:07:55Sorry. Yeah, I wish that it was a
- 1:08:02little more on the Romantic side than on the like righteous cause
- 1:08:05side because it really falters her like assault on patriarchy,
- 1:08:10because she ends up meeting, Every guy in her life.
- 1:08:15In the k-drama fanfic version of this show.
- 1:08:19For me, I want to feel like it was Hina Kudo meeting in a coup.
- 1:08:23Do some what made her at least a say these things about like,
- 1:08:27wanting to, like not. Every marry anyone and tend to
- 1:08:30like, you know, F the patriarchy and all this kind of stuff
- 1:08:32because Hina was married. Played every dude like a fiddle,
- 1:08:36he don't like she's so manipulate used her.
- 1:08:39Yeah. She's her feminine wiles for
- 1:08:41like as a West. Truly a weapon and like she
- 1:08:44Maintain this like hehe. I'm like a beautiful.
- 1:08:46Like I'm like a, the owner of this hotel and she held his like
- 1:08:49autonomy and I again in this like fanfic version of this, in
- 1:08:53my mind I want to say she was inspired by her or something
- 1:08:55about meeting her change something for her but yeah I
- 1:08:58didn't really follow through come like she's married to Korea
- 1:09:02she's and she's married to the cost.
- 1:09:04My God. Exactly she ends up basically
- 1:09:07marrying the cause and marrying her nationalism and the country.
- 1:09:13And at the The end. The final shot is literally of
- 1:09:15her with the Korean flag and that's the love of her life
- 1:09:20essentially. Okay.
- 1:09:22So I know that I need to like interrupted say is, can we just
- 1:09:24give props to the child actors in this freaking show because I
- 1:09:27do goodly shit, kid was amazing? Yes.
- 1:09:32Yeah. Did you?
- 1:09:33Oh my God, have you watched them every when the Camellia blues at
- 1:09:37all? Yes.
- 1:09:39Oh my God. Yes.
- 1:09:39So the kids that little boy, kid, Phil you Jim, my God, and
- 1:09:43we covered the show, the pocket. Yeah, when The Chameleons peel,
- 1:09:45gu bill goes back guys, young Yugi.
- 1:09:49That's so good. His crying dr.
- 1:09:52Cries, oh my God. You just want to baking again,
- 1:09:58he does so well. That is actor.
- 1:10:00Kim, kang-hyun Moon and amazing as people go and as young
- 1:10:05Eugene. Yeah, he's great.
- 1:10:07I haven't watched is hitting racket, boys, or something.
- 1:10:09I haven't watched on you. Maybe I don't know how to watch.
- 1:10:11Rocco Boise. Like an adolescent now.
- 1:10:12Yeah. Yeah, I think he's in that.
- 1:10:15But anyway, he is great as a child actor.
- 1:10:17So I'm sure he'll be will keep seeing him in the future.
- 1:10:19Absolutely. Oh my God.
- 1:10:21But speaking of cameos, the descendants of the Sun.
- 1:10:24S couple are Kim, Teddy's, parents like that.
- 1:10:28In that extended flashback sequence in episode 10.
- 1:10:34Oh yeah. Bingo.
- 1:10:36And what's her face Lord, I forgot her name but they yes yes
- 1:10:43yeah forgotten but I love Yesterday.
- 1:10:45Oh my God. From my Liberation notes.
- 1:10:47She's so good. She's amazing.
- 1:10:49Yes, yes. Yes.
- 1:10:50I'll get her nails done now. So what did you think of that
- 1:10:52Cameo? And honestly, they kind of
- 1:10:55mildly reference. Oh, it's Kim.
- 1:10:56Do on can do one and gives you all do mildly reference.
- 1:11:02How, you know, in a few in a future Korea with peace and like
- 1:11:07Independence or whatever, they will find each other again, like
- 1:11:11they were talking about your right and I was right.
- 1:11:14Yeah, definitely definitely. It was is okay.
- 1:11:22Had to but had to pit. Yeah, but yeah man.
- 1:11:26But yeah the kid actors were doing such a great job that the
- 1:11:28kid who played Little goo goo dong Mei, like had his similar
- 1:11:32somehow like a child version Vibe of his and was so good.
- 1:11:36The little like, what do me? Who helped at the American
- 1:11:40legation? Was a door.
- 1:11:41Oh my God. I know.
- 1:11:43Oh my God, but that End of the show.
- 1:11:44They show have grown up. Kim Min.
- 1:11:50Jae play literally salutes like Eugene's grave.
- 1:11:53I'm like a raven, I'm like, oh my God, this shot everything.
- 1:11:58Oh my God, another SNL sketch, it had everything.
- 1:12:05Anyway, samurais says, I will die.
- 1:12:11If you like actually develop a little Script.
- 1:12:16Oh shit. Anyway, that is awesome.
- 1:12:18He's from Delhi and cocky Prince I believe.
- 1:12:21And yeah, he plays the, a little errand boy, all grown up at the
- 1:12:24very end of the day. Yeah, scene of the movie, Kyle
- 1:12:29more, the teenage Soldier, there's more like descendants of
- 1:12:32the sun people in here because, oh, yeah, yep, that guy.
- 1:12:36Yep, is the bad guy kept like, yes, yes.
- 1:12:41I remember girls accent, he like was going from like Southern.
- 1:12:44Hey Yugi. Like that's like some I don't
- 1:12:48know his ex was like all over the place is like what is going
- 1:12:50on with your eyes? Like I know you speak English
- 1:12:53like what's happening right now? Blue content anymore was in my
- 1:12:55in my head. I think they did.
- 1:12:57And I found it. So, because isn't he Korean like
- 1:13:00a korean-american? Yeah.
- 1:13:01Name is. Yeah.
- 1:13:02So I was like, David McInnis. David Magee is open.
- 1:13:06They were trying to play it off like you just like Caucasian
- 1:13:09American. Yeah.
- 1:13:10And I was like there. No one said we talked about his
- 1:13:12Karina so never never. These characters are creating
- 1:13:17characters, not green, buddy, is God?
- 1:13:19Here it is. And then I think, I think you're
- 1:13:22right about the context in which were really throwing me off.
- 1:13:24Like I was very confused. Everybody at first, when you
- 1:13:26first, they kept coming on screen, those accent was all
- 1:13:28over the place is like we're in America.
- 1:13:31He's supposed to be, he's American, but he's obviously is
- 1:13:34in the entertainment industry and Korea Wikipedia, since since
- 1:13:371999, he's been working in Korea.
- 1:13:41But yeah, he's American Youth and See.
- 1:13:44Korean like, I think, for this character thought he was trying
- 1:13:48to, he's like sometimes I'm from South Carolina, Yugi, and then
- 1:13:51second well. Okay, so this I don't know, sir,
- 1:13:53British or something David McInnis is from Wisconsin, Green
- 1:13:57Bay, Wisconsin. And I think we talked about this
- 1:13:59on the descendants of the sun episode because he, he's from
- 1:14:05Wisconsin. And I just think that the accent
- 1:14:10was a little shaky because sometimes the Mid-Atlantic
- 1:14:14because sometimes he sounded like he like had yeah but it was
- 1:14:18weird or a transient because sometimes he was like he had
- 1:14:21that lot that's sing-songy thing going on too and I was like,
- 1:14:23that's weird. We are on the same page, but
- 1:14:28David McKenna is I did you think that he was going to be the bad
- 1:14:31guy at the end? I thought I did think he was
- 1:14:35going to either do something and inadvertently or like
- 1:14:37intentionally to screw the up yeast.
- 1:14:39I thought that he was like a spy or something and leaking
- 1:14:41information to the Japanese that he was a traitor at some Never
- 1:14:45happened, right? Purely good guy.
- 1:14:47Never happened. I was surprised.
- 1:14:48Yeah. So surprised I, I wanted to talk
- 1:14:52real quick about the joonyoung the military academy officer who
- 1:14:56was like, ready to go to work today for career, ready to kill
- 1:15:00Japan today, like, yeah, because his, he's also a younger actor,
- 1:15:04not a child one, maybe. But like his development to was
- 1:15:07and his acting the last couple episodes where he's like on the
- 1:15:10train with them and yeah, he's like really, you know, He was so
- 1:15:14good and I don't know what else he's in, but he is super good.
- 1:15:17So Props to that guy, I just want to shout them out because
- 1:15:21also looking his Asian Wiki profile.
- 1:15:22Like he he is 30 now and went looking for him when he's 30.
- 1:15:27And what? What was the last minute?
- 1:15:29Beautiful hair, beautiful hair dye, beautiful haired.
- 1:15:33Look at my buddy. Asian Wiki is.
- 1:15:34It is Dong Dong Yuan John-Boy here.
- 1:15:37I see em. I see em.
- 1:15:38Okay, and your life. So sorry, I'm purely shallow and
- 1:15:46any kind of beauty? I will have to like note-taking.
- 1:15:48Okay, well, it's Harry about Beauties about okay, no bun.
- 1:15:52No. Now you you hit a nerve here
- 1:15:53because you're talking about beautiful people and beautiful
- 1:15:56hair and shit and like, you yong-seok as good on me.
- 1:16:00Yeah, I only saw, I only saw reply 1994, we played like the
- 1:16:07dorkiest baseball player on the planet.
- 1:16:14To me, that's not the best reply.
- 1:16:16The worst of the Rebecca, worst worst reply, but I watched the
- 1:16:19whole thing partially because the him cause I was like what
- 1:16:20he's fun. He was putting off waves of just
- 1:16:26sexy in the show. Yeah and I could not deal with
- 1:16:30it. I was like I love you beyond
- 1:16:32Godlike as much as the next person but like yeah who is the
- 1:16:35real lead here? It's good on.
- 1:16:37Yes. 100 was acting his ass off. His say he had this thing with
- 1:16:42the clothes going on. Same Like the girl who played,
- 1:16:45you know, Kudo he just was the samurai robes.
- 1:16:48Very? I mean, it got like kind of
- 1:16:49annoying to be like blood splattered for him all the time,
- 1:16:51but he just his like smirking, his like just strutting around
- 1:16:58just uh, oh good. Yeah, good.
- 1:17:02Oh my God. Questionable facial hair.
- 1:17:04All those facial hair. I think those are like the
- 1:17:09things I put on him every morning.
- 1:17:10I'm pretty sure. I don't think you grew the thing
- 1:17:12and I was looking closely. It's like The bottom half under
- 1:17:15his chin, all that was real and then just the stash was fake.
- 1:17:21I thought I saw him talk about it.
- 1:17:23Some point, I do remember, he's at least somewhere, maybe wasn't
- 1:17:25a show that he's talking about like having to get them like
- 1:17:27individually hair, individual hairs placed on him at before
- 1:17:30every shoot it took like a hundred years worms like get
- 1:17:32into that like just visual. Oh my god well I because the
- 1:17:36hair you know it was like I think away.
- 1:17:37Yeah. The hair was definitely a way
- 1:17:39they yeah. Yeah.
- 1:17:41I didn't have him looking wretched out in the streets.
- 1:17:44But yo, so look episode 5, I think it is, they're picking up
- 1:17:49shit off the floor in some I don't know like a shop or
- 1:17:52something and he her pink skirts brushes over his hand.
- 1:18:04It was so beautifully shot. Beautiful, and yeah.
- 1:18:08Sensual and it had like the vibe of like a hand shot in a period
- 1:18:14piece drama. Like Olive mr.
- 1:18:16Darcy and Pride, and Prejudice. Like it has that like bye-bye,
- 1:18:19was like, this is for the ladies in the house, you know what I'm
- 1:18:21saying? Yeah, this is not for the guys,
- 1:18:23the guys don't understand. This, it's for the lip of the
- 1:18:26women and I mean, and then he grabs her skirt, her reaction to
- 1:18:31her like that, because She's like oh my God.
- 1:18:34Like you know, oh my God Hand me, it was like my skirt right
- 1:18:38now, like 45 feet away from my body, but still gets a scandal
- 1:18:44scandalous. And he keeps saying he's not
- 1:18:46doing anything even though he's clearly clutching her skirt and
- 1:18:50he won't let the skirt go. And I just haven't really caught
- 1:18:53his hand or something. No, I don't think it cut his
- 1:18:56hair. Like we have like a paper cut on
- 1:18:57his hand. I thought.
- 1:18:59Oh man. But he was like, I mean, in my
- 1:19:01nose, I have. What is going on?
- 1:19:02What does this mean? And the closest these three
- 1:19:06dudes are after her. Yeah, thereafter.
- 1:19:09He would like have these moments with her.
- 1:19:12They're just, I couldn't deal with that one moment in episode
- 1:19:155 and the closing shot of that episode was then inside the
- 1:19:19building, it's like a freeze frame image of them and it's
- 1:19:23almost like they're not moving out, because it's in slow
- 1:19:25motion. The rain is falling in, slow,
- 1:19:27motion is absolutely beautiful, gorgeous 10 out of 10, him with
- 1:19:31every girl, like his stuff with, you know, who Her final
- 1:19:35confession. I was slayed like, oh my God, I
- 1:19:37was like, this could, this could have this, I would have went
- 1:19:40either way, it had. He like ended up somehow having
- 1:19:42a real romantic moment with that issue.
- 1:19:44Nor with Unicode. Oh, it would've been a win for
- 1:19:46everyone involved because it was, he's just was Central and
- 1:19:48all that with everyone. Like all the ladies and like,
- 1:19:51he's six, like pure in the vein sex, the the woman with mutism
- 1:19:58that he had as like his sidekick almost.
- 1:20:00Oh my God, which is the color beneath the shadow shaman.
- 1:20:03Girl who like yes doing tarot cards.
- 1:20:07Oh, what he would walk in on Hina Kudos baths.
- 1:20:09Right now, my his brain is like flashing images of the show.
- 1:20:12Like every minute I was having a cow over suck.
- 1:20:17Oh man. Yeah.
- 1:20:18So yo and episode 10 or 11, I can remember which one it is.
- 1:20:24He now Kuno. Kudo is riding the trolley at
- 1:20:27night and it's snowing. So she holds she holds out her
- 1:20:29hand to catch the falling snow and he grabs her.
- 1:20:33Hand and whisks her off the trolley and like pure kdrama
- 1:20:37form. And just the visuals were
- 1:20:39stunning, there left standing like super close to one another
- 1:20:44and then she pushed, she pulls a gun on him and she says be
- 1:20:47careful when you take a lady's hand, we don't always carry
- 1:20:49rainbows and sunshine and I was like that's my girl.
- 1:21:04Well, yeah, your Vibes. If you thought the mean romance
- 1:21:07was Vibes, the second Dairy thing that don't matter and
- 1:21:11because they were more of a kindred spirit.
- 1:21:13I feel like I say gone through the same kinds of shit like, hey
- 1:21:16know, like uh, yeah, yes. Also.
- 1:21:19When even the moment where he cuts issues Harry, who that was
- 1:21:23brutal, it was awful. It wouldn't have been so brutal
- 1:21:25if all that wasn't happening that whole time like it wouldn't
- 1:21:28have the same impact. I feel that active especially
- 1:21:32for us as modern viewers like you.
- 1:21:33Like yeah, I don't want anyone cut my hair like that little the
- 1:21:35street but like, because they knew each other it was I think a
- 1:21:37little bit softened and because you know him he's sort of like
- 1:21:40that it was kind of like but then like I think like the
- 1:21:42build-up of like just all the tenseness around them all the
- 1:21:45time, the tension around them all the time.
- 1:21:47And then he like whips out his sword and cuts her hair was
- 1:21:50extra shocking because of that. So I think he just did it.
- 1:21:54Everyone acting their pants off in the show and that was great.
- 1:21:58Such horrible, you know what I mean?
- 1:21:59Like, in the moment you did that.
- 1:22:01Yeah, the impact. I'm gonna skip to the end.
- 1:22:03And with dong Mei and Hina. Because, what does that episode
- 1:22:0923? Oh my God, so she dies, right?
- 1:22:13It is brutal. He takes her.
- 1:22:16This is where we coming back to like the transportation issue.
- 1:22:19Like they were essentially in Seoul, they end up at the beach,
- 1:22:23he took it to the beach close to where I think you back because
- 1:22:26you can't walk piggybacks. You cannot walk.
- 1:22:28She's dead weight. Close to where her mother is
- 1:22:30buried. She confesses that Eugene is not
- 1:22:34the one in her heart anymore and hasn't been for a long time.
- 1:22:38She says, she's been waiting for a man who loves another woman
- 1:22:40and that that love made him go mad and I was like, bitch salus,
- 1:22:46she says the area, this is like, the beach would be beautiful and
- 1:22:50snow told him to come visit her when it snows and that, of
- 1:22:54course, they flashed back to that moment that I just talked
- 1:22:56about with. And he grabs her off of the
- 1:22:58trolley in the snow, and they're just like Rosen and dime.
- 1:23:02And Ah, then she tells him, like, you know, don't come right
- 1:23:06away live a little longer. It's awful.
- 1:23:08They had such a wonderful unfulfilled love and ultimately,
- 1:23:13she died a patriot something that she was kind of wrestling
- 1:23:17with the whole show. You know, what, her identity,
- 1:23:21what did you think of one that bathtub scene where she gets out
- 1:23:24of the bath and she's covered in scars?
- 1:23:26I mean, her backstory of like getting married off by your dick
- 1:23:28head, down to some, like, douchebag, probably who's like,
- 1:23:31your link a sec. I think he was old.
- 1:23:33He dies. Yeah.
- 1:23:34Super super old dies. You get everything by just
- 1:23:37de-facto your his widow and then but obviously she was so like
- 1:23:41we're like she was so upset and hurt that her dad to the sir.
- 1:23:44She's always been seeing her mother.
- 1:23:45And I really want to know more about why she has her mother so
- 1:23:47much like, other than obvious reasons, you know, like what
- 1:23:49happened to her mother or like whatever her mother might have
- 1:23:51endured as the wife of her crazy father and he'll on like this,
- 1:23:57Yeah, you want to go and then the scars all over her.
- 1:24:00Like her ability to be like I speak Japanese, I speak French,
- 1:24:03I speak English? I speak Korean, you know, like
- 1:24:06all of that, like, all that survival.
- 1:24:07So, like what was she doing in Japan?
- 1:24:08Like, I mean I shouldn't but she doing it with the fencing in
- 1:24:11France and it was just that guy and like sussing out.
- 1:24:13Who's a spy, and just having this like, one eye on everything
- 1:24:16at her hotel. Like knowing all the Shady
- 1:24:18business, but actually she didn't acting so innocent like
- 1:24:21she had so much going on and then even that's why I feel like
- 1:24:24she's really more Kindred Spirits with it.
- 1:24:27Don't lay because he also went through, God knows what in
- 1:24:30Japan, and then, you know, like we know his childhood and then
- 1:24:33we skip all of his whole life in Japan.
- 1:24:35And now he's in Korea, started around.
- 1:24:37But we missed so many. There's so many gas for both of
- 1:24:39them, but they've both been feel like hindered and they know,
- 1:24:41like, I absolutely feel the same way that they're soul mates.
- 1:24:46Yeah, he's so distracted by a scene.
- 1:24:48It's like so dumb. Oh my goodness.
- 1:24:50She herself was also. So that's a thing.
- 1:24:53The end when gone mad eyes, I'm fully expecting him to have
- 1:24:56visions of Pina, as he is surpassing on.
- 1:25:01I got the same thing. He doesn't, he has visions of a
- 1:25:04fishing again, and I'm like, oh my God.
- 1:25:07So the ends, he never let go like, why not though, because I
- 1:25:12get like, you see she saved her life and that was like, it was
- 1:25:15pivotal moment in your life. Life-size childhood and like
- 1:25:17this. This I maybe it's like hope for
- 1:25:19him. This nobility didn't treat him
- 1:25:21like absolute shit. So like looks like, oh my God,
- 1:25:23right? But it was.
- 1:25:24Yeah, I totally feel like baffling by.
- 1:25:26The end is baffling by the end, and he did just imprint on a
- 1:25:30mission. Essentially, there was no, like,
- 1:25:32nobody else brutal even though he's very affected when he dies.
- 1:25:38It's not what I thought when he knows same.
- 1:25:42Yeah, also, what about the Betrayal from the lady the show?
- 1:25:46The lady with the mutism mutism like her betrayal of him by
- 1:25:50selling him out, they lead lady has Japan.
- 1:25:53Did you know, if you remember that so lady, she goes Japan of
- 1:25:55Care at her Mission and then she sends a telegram because she
- 1:25:58just doesn't want Google made to die.
- 1:26:00Saving her. What she obviously is like,
- 1:26:02prepared to do. And he is so pissed at her.
- 1:26:05And yeah, then the whole like his little faction of the black
- 1:26:08dragon Society falls apart. The motion is to call it in a
- 1:26:11show. Yeah.
- 1:26:13Is that the translation from motion black Joe?
- 1:26:16Oh, so there was a real society called black dragon society that
- 1:26:19kind of roamed around Korea as part of like a filly to with
- 1:26:21Japan and they were sort of like, maybe like Yakuza.
- 1:26:24I don't know if that kind of assumed that they were Yakuza
- 1:26:26and I think at one point I read a translation, of course it was
- 1:26:29on Netflix but it was a real of the but I don't know.
- 1:26:34Yeah. I think that you would consider
- 1:26:35like to compared to Modern Day within gakuto's similar like
- 1:26:38stuff going on similar like interactions or attract.
- 1:26:40Yeah. But they were as a real thing
- 1:26:42called black dragon society that existed and they actually I
- 1:26:46think possibly released when it aired in Korea, they call them
- 1:26:48the black dragon society and then they change the name to
- 1:26:50music in society because it was to actually, the writers got
- 1:26:54accused of being too pro-japanese, and thing like a
- 1:26:56specifically, Google has made his character of being like
- 1:27:00somebody who was justified in hating Korea to death you know
- 1:27:03like so. That's okay.
- 1:27:05So that's the thing about the complaint of it being
- 1:27:09pro-japanese is because the movie, the movie, why do I keep
- 1:27:12saying the movie? It's just cinematic.
- 1:27:14It's just so cinematic. I think it's a movie.
- 1:27:15Yeah. Yes, so no, the show does a
- 1:27:18great job of painting Korea in a negative light and a positive
- 1:27:21light. And you have the running theme
- 1:27:24of permeate. I was teacher Snowdrop episode
- 1:27:27and there's a blue. There was a blue house petition
- 1:27:28for this show as well because I know you mentioned that for your
- 1:27:31Snowdrop. So there was a blue house
- 1:27:32petition saying, okay, so I have a quote here.
- 1:27:34It says, on July 16th. This is from South China Morning
- 1:27:37Post. I had this quote and July 16th.
- 1:27:38The petition appeared on the tongues web Ade, which is Blue
- 1:27:41House website calling on the government to prevent factual
- 1:27:43errors and period dramas the petition stated quote Historical
- 1:27:46facts are definite perpetrators and victims chosen was not
- 1:27:49depicted as a victim of colonization, but instead one
- 1:27:52that invited it guangmei. His character is a villain but
- 1:27:55by showing reasons he had to join the project has
- 1:27:57organization. His actions have been Justified
- 1:27:59and quote. So so this is like as a show is
- 1:28:01airing and then they had to like kind of rewrite.
- 1:28:02They rewrote his whole character to be a little, like a moron,
- 1:28:05the Korean side or like helping Korea because this was the way
- 1:28:07it was starting to go people getting pissed in Korea.
- 1:28:10So they sent this petition the writers rewrote it they change
- 1:28:13black dragon society and motion study, which is a fictional I
- 1:28:17think I got you. Wow, that is so interesting
- 1:28:19because that's my favorite thing of the show is like I guess the
- 1:28:24characters have every reason to hate Korea.
- 1:28:30You know, Korea's painted in a bad light because of their
- 1:28:33history, some some Korean netizens were upset because
- 1:28:37they're like, why are you showing that Korea had no
- 1:28:39electricity tell like someone else brought it in?
- 1:28:41I mean, because that's what happened.
- 1:28:42Like sorry. Like you know some people right?
- 1:28:45We're getting upset over kind of silly things sillier things, you
- 1:28:47know, I'm Brigitte because there are they may be themselves are
- 1:28:50super patriotic and I understand like you don't want to create a
- 1:28:53come across, some kind like Backwoods that were true.
- 1:28:55Yeah. But sure but I mean,
- 1:28:57historically speaking of that I think this is one thing.
- 1:29:00Israel fiction. That's interesting.
- 1:29:01And again going back to Snowdrop thing for a minute.
- 1:29:03Just listening to a little bit. There is like this push and pull
- 1:29:06like historical fiction and being like a fiction being art
- 1:29:08and being less than that. But then if you don't know the
- 1:29:10history or you don't have a context for this, yay, there's
- 1:29:14so much that could go wrong and so definitely touches lots of
- 1:29:17nerves. And I mean, the thing about
- 1:29:19literacy is silly or like, you know, but the I get kind of are
- 1:29:22there, like, you're there. Like you're basically saying
- 1:29:24Japan and this guy like selling himself to Japan like his his
- 1:29:30it's Japan made sense and they were upset with it and then they
- 1:29:33like, okay, we're going to backtrack and change and change.
- 1:29:35Not like the his story arc. I don't know.
- 1:29:37It's hard. And it's about that one.
- 1:29:39I really am. Yeah.
- 1:29:41I mean, I don't even have a side really cuz I'm like, but I will
- 1:29:45full disclosure, I study history and called history degree.
- 1:29:48So it's and one thing about it, it's like it's sort of like that
- 1:29:52line from Hamlet said like who lives, who dies, who tells me,
- 1:29:54exactly, who gets to say, what is history?
- 1:29:57Yeah, who is the one teaching? And how are you portraying?
- 1:30:00What whose perspective are we looking at it from, because some
- 1:30:02of those people who, which mr. Sunshine shows, who were like,
- 1:30:04kind of pro-japanese, or like, you know, played with Japanese
- 1:30:07so that they could get some Kickback, like, you will need.
- 1:30:10For example, that's a prime example of a terrible, terrible
- 1:30:12character. I'm unique is a prime example.
- 1:30:15Yeah, but they have their reasons, exactly, and for them
- 1:30:18that to them, it's like, well, it's good that Japan should
- 1:30:20like, some people definitely did even leader, like maybe they
- 1:30:22show some pitching coach. I haven't watch if I read the
- 1:30:24book like many times, but there's some people who were
- 1:30:26fine that fine. But they were like, yeah, okay.
- 1:30:28I'll play along with the I need something.
- 1:30:30I don't care that they're here. I think they're me here country
- 1:30:32better and there's always a gene is constantly maintaining this
- 1:30:35narrative. I have is I don't care who takes
- 1:30:39ownership of career. I really don't.
- 1:30:41I just want all of you guys to stay safe.
- 1:30:45Well, that's weird because he's like I'm not helping Korea
- 1:30:47because of Korea I'm helping because of this lady I was like,
- 1:30:49this is weird. Like, but okay, that's another
- 1:30:52thing too. You know what, let's segue into
- 1:30:54their relationship because I feel like it's the main thing
- 1:30:58that people recall of Show is just them two and he is again,
- 1:31:03maintaining that he is American American American American
- 1:31:07pro-america don't tread on me all that shit, and he is
- 1:31:12actively going back to Korea and jeopardizing, his entire
- 1:31:16military career for the woman. He loves because she is a
- 1:31:20revolutionary. She's trying to put Korea back
- 1:31:24on on top again, and trying to fortify Korea against all of
- 1:31:28these foreign incursion. Asians.
- 1:31:31And even though America is taking like a back seat during
- 1:31:33this time, period is very small time period like there's
- 1:31:38tensions from all sides. And, you know, one point there
- 1:31:42were talking about like, why isn't America helping us because
- 1:31:45we're allies, we sounded. We signed a treaty with America
- 1:31:48and they're not doing anything to help us is because of all of
- 1:31:50these back Backwoods money deals, it happened that there's
- 1:31:56a loan out to Japan from America, America stands to make
- 1:31:59a Money off of any war that happens in Japan, so it behooves
- 1:32:04them not to do anything. So it was very political in that
- 1:32:07sense and he just bypasses all of that, like he is above.
- 1:32:11All of that is essentially he's not married to America unlike
- 1:32:14her L hardcore. Yes, he loves America, he calls
- 1:32:18it, his homeland fine, but he is not burying himself next to the
- 1:32:22American flag. And, you know, being that into
- 1:32:28patriotism like she she is like he's not that even because he
- 1:32:33did it for survival, you know he was like this is a ladder.
- 1:32:37I could climb the ladder of the military.
- 1:32:39I can work my way up the ranks so I become whatever he whatever
- 1:32:42like Boheme. I honestly feel like they didn't
- 1:32:44do such a good job of explaining why he was in the military like
- 1:32:49what it gave him. Right?
- 1:32:51I guess you could see like the end product obviously of all of
- 1:32:53his power and influence, while he's in Korea at the legation
- 1:32:57but initially, he was being Bullied harassed in the streets,
- 1:33:02just because he was Asian. And I mean there's that line of
- 1:33:06the it's a stroller. He's like an american gun.
- 1:33:08Doesn't care if you're a noble or yeah.
- 1:33:10Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:33:11Like, you know, but your SATs and then he's got my vote.
- 1:33:15What is that quick? Like carry a big stick.
- 1:33:18Oh my God, the he called Snap president.
- 1:33:22Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:33:23At one point area, big stick to speak softly and carry out this.
- 1:33:26That's it. That's some president that said
- 1:33:28that I can't remember which one I think Teddy, Roosevelt did
- 1:33:31this Teddy Roosevelt? Teddy Roosevelt Teddy.
- 1:33:33I just want like a cop-out times early on that was corny as hell.
- 1:33:38Like, what the hell are you talking about?
- 1:33:39Why are you? So, I'm very intrigued by his
- 1:33:42distinction of like, I'm not doing this for Korea.
- 1:33:45Don't give a fuck, who owns Korea, but he hates the Japanese
- 1:33:48when whatever they're doing in the streets, like he's wildly
- 1:33:52upset fluent, guys, he flew it. I have so many questions.
- 1:33:55Like, did he was he stationed in Japan?
- 1:33:57I know. Like, of course, America is also
- 1:33:58involved in Japanese stuff. A long time.
- 1:34:00I don't know what's going on. I was just like, I didn't get
- 1:34:02him and some some points, you know.
- 1:34:04Uh-huh. Yeah, I just didn't get him and
- 1:34:07then the fact that he was at the very end of like you said
- 1:34:09helping so much, but because of her, I was like, that's your
- 1:34:11excuse because you just want to help her.
- 1:34:12I mean, it was like, he wasn't even if he had said like because
- 1:34:15I love the like Potter guy and he was sort of alluding to that.
- 1:34:19But like he did it like, say so explicitly.
- 1:34:21He was just like fell about her. Looks like know you love
- 1:34:23everybody here. Like you look.
- 1:34:25All these Korean people. So, yeah.
- 1:34:28Today, I don't know. It's hard to sit, I guess is
- 1:34:32distinctive. I'm trying to make is he can
- 1:34:34back her and her ideologies, without believing in her
- 1:34:38ideologies. And I feel like that would throw
- 1:34:40me, but can he? I don't think so.
- 1:34:43I wasn't buying it, right? I felt like, I was like, no, you
- 1:34:46love Korea just a myth, right? Like, he's at and then we'll
- 1:34:48come back to it. You would pick Korea the flag
- 1:34:50that the keys hold on about flag, explain that.
- 1:34:54What was that kid? That he had a draped on his bed
- 1:34:57or something like that was like, so weird.
- 1:34:59That was weird. It was getting really weird.
- 1:35:02Yeah it was just I was getting so we're like what are we doing
- 1:35:05right now? Yes.
- 1:35:10Oh my God. Okay, okay, let's reset her
- 1:35:13here. So Lord, where do I go?
- 1:35:17We were talking about their romance that the meat cute.
- 1:35:19Let's talk about the meat cute episodes, do they meet?
- 1:35:23I don't know if I've ever seen a meet-cute, where they're both
- 1:35:26trying to snipe the same guy before it was creative as
- 1:35:31clever. I like, I like that as a Meek.
- 1:35:32Yeah, yeah. A lot of iconography them on the
- 1:35:35roof than, like, Freeze Frame. Because there are like when
- 1:35:38they, when they And their hands up to each other like this.
- 1:35:41They're like, are you? That was iconic.
- 1:35:44It is Iconic. And I felt the one time I
- 1:35:47believed in them. Yeah.
- 1:35:48The one time. Like, one of the few times.
- 1:35:49Yeah. But he tricks her into like
- 1:35:52falling in love with them because an episode 3.
- 1:35:54She's like what is love? She's learning English.
- 1:35:57I heard his better than gaining it title and he says, well, you
- 1:36:00can't do it by yourself. You need someone to do with it.
- 1:36:02She's like, would you do so? We're would you do it with me?
- 1:36:05And it's just, it is a really nice moment between a nice
- 1:36:08electricity between But obviously, yeah, he is
- 1:36:11manipulating her into yeah, because he knows what it means
- 1:36:15the show sort of tricky. Yes.
- 1:36:17So I'm like torn. It's yeah.
- 1:36:20I want. It wasn't as good as it could
- 1:36:22have been. If it was a little less beer, it
- 1:36:23was weird. And then you're just like,
- 1:36:25whatever he's 10 years older than her.
- 1:36:27It was because of the show. So there's this whole like
- 1:36:31older, man, younger woman, and then he's kind of a kiss.
- 1:36:35I don't remember. No.
- 1:36:37But actually, they do not. Okay, and I was, that was
- 1:36:39Weirding me out too. Because I was like, you're 100
- 1:36:41years older than her. And so, you know, some glad you
- 1:36:44didn't kind of, but like, yeah, strange, it was yesterday to
- 1:36:47have all these private moms together and she like, kick out
- 1:36:49her servants. We leave us alone, like we're
- 1:36:51going to talk and like talk or look, what at all.
- 1:36:53I'm saying, all I'm saying is they spent days writing to the
- 1:36:58beach, today's weather, both have been chilling.
- 1:37:02Presumably days, writing back, and you're telling me, there was
- 1:37:04no kiss, no sex, nothing, nothing.
- 1:37:07And I mean, if you think about a good thing, mate, Not further
- 1:37:10than he did by putting his hand, under her skirt, like chicken,
- 1:37:13the plank went with her, right? All they did was hug and maybe
- 1:37:17they were. It's because of the Korean that
- 1:37:20they are guests. Yeah.
- 1:37:21The 20-year age Gap in real life was like kind of causing them to
- 1:37:25be a little more prudish weird though.
- 1:37:27I feel like by the end he's about to die for you.
- 1:37:29Girl. Like do something like something
- 1:37:30has. That's what I'm saying is I'm
- 1:37:32like homeboy is literally taken the shot for you, dying for you
- 1:37:37and your time can't even kiss him.
- 1:37:39All the cheek like there was no take care of that point to be a
- 1:37:43lot harder to let him do that but like you should have.
- 1:37:46No no but you see what I'm saying?
- 1:37:47Like they're there was life and death situations prior to that
- 1:37:50that they had a moment to breathe afterward and there was
- 1:37:53still like nothing. No nothing.
- 1:37:55Yeah, it's nothing but she said I was the one part where did it
- 1:37:58pay off? It didn't know pay off there.
- 1:38:00Absolutely not but episode 9. She's talking about she'd rather
- 1:38:03be a flame than a flower burn fiercely and then Wilt and he's
- 1:38:08like oh she's so cruel. I love this cruel woman.
- 1:38:11He's, it's a thing that like keep popping up, is that she
- 1:38:14just wants to like burn brightly, and then everyone
- 1:38:17says, she's cool. Yeah, she is, she is, she's
- 1:38:20terrible. She said, I don't know if I
- 1:38:22would, like, Asian, if I like came across her.
- 1:38:23I'd be like, I don't know if we'd be friends, bitch.
- 1:38:25Like, you're just like too much. It's very a touch, even when she
- 1:38:30starts to get a clue. It's like, okay.
- 1:38:32Yeah. She's always like insulated.
- 1:38:34She's just so insulated the whole time, even then, she's
- 1:38:37protected. Yes.
- 1:38:38Even if you don't want her, it's dies.
- 1:38:40Talk about their like Shields her Shield.
- 1:38:42Okay. I just hate.
- 1:38:43So, you know, of course, it's all very touchy because
- 1:38:45enslavement is like a whole thing and like, yes.
- 1:38:48They're now just her regular surveys and it's still like the
- 1:38:52amount of loyalty in the amount of, like, like just doting on
- 1:38:55her, like it made sense because you've known her since she was a
- 1:38:57little baby, but it was really hard to watch this level of
- 1:39:02like, you know, the things they would do for her.
- 1:39:04The luck thinks it would go for her.
- 1:39:06They could have been, they put themselves in danger so many
- 1:39:08times or at Being fired, maybe more because at the end of the
- 1:39:12day, there still was a class system, she's still nobility and
- 1:39:14for servants, to be like, you know, lying on her behalf and
- 1:39:17stuff they could have been like, who knows what at that point,
- 1:39:19you know? Like, I don't know.
- 1:39:20And then she didn't, she did take them, I think for granted
- 1:39:24and then and then she loses them in episode 23.
- 1:39:27Real real late in the show, right, 23?
- 1:39:31There's 24 episodes. They what is it?
- 1:39:34They like provided a decoy in town and they went along with a
- 1:39:38bunch of older people. People.
- 1:39:40They're joking zai together because they're older, their
- 1:39:43lives are lived, they don't have a lot of stuff to do to
- 1:39:47contribute to the righteous Army and so they're just like will be
- 1:39:49a decoy so everyone can make it out and they along the way they
- 1:39:53like joking with each other they're messing around.
- 1:39:55They have the palanquins because of course she's supposed to be
- 1:39:57in there and just as the male and female I think it's Miss
- 1:40:02Hammond was her name? Yes.
- 1:40:04The and then the male servant I forget his name but they are
- 1:40:07about to hold hands. She's literally he just
- 1:40:10confessed that she likes him or loves him or whatever, they're
- 1:40:14about to hold hands and they all get gunned down That was brutal.
- 1:40:19And so, is this Airy so brutal, the most brutal you could be
- 1:40:23like this, was it like really upsetting?
- 1:40:28As for me, I was crying. And then she shows up is shocked
- 1:40:33to see them, there she had no idea the plan.
- 1:40:35So, today, keep that last week, we played a secret for headache.
- 1:40:38Must have kept it a secret for her and second she never
- 1:40:41considered that they would die. Yeah, that she was so out of she
- 1:40:46was going back to her earlier thing.
- 1:40:49I was like what do you mean and even your jeans like you need to
- 1:40:52shore up homie. Because the how do you, how do
- 1:40:56you think? I think even after he Called her
- 1:41:00out. It was like, you realize like
- 1:41:01they can't just eat wherever sit wherever do whatever?
- 1:41:04Yeah they're beholden to you. She still was like chop chop my
- 1:41:08palanquin like Chop Chop. Like come here.
- 1:41:10I need you to summon like I was just like what is going on and
- 1:41:14it was so like it both showed. I don't know, your spits like
- 1:41:18this again, romanticization of in slate of slavery where like
- 1:41:21it reminded me a little bit of this is very American but my
- 1:41:28God, I will never Go hungry again.
- 1:41:30What does that one? Oh my God.
- 1:41:32Is it Gone With the Wind? Yes.
- 1:41:33Thank you Gone With the Wind. Yeah, this show reminded me
- 1:41:36heavily of Gone With the Wind because it is at this juncture
- 1:41:40in the Korean history, right? Where you have east meets west.
- 1:41:44A lot of flux happening in and you have almost like Herrera
- 1:41:50where she grew up and stuff in the young been era where it is
- 1:41:54like the South like what is it? Antebellum South.
- 1:41:58Yeah, feels Like that and then you have all this shit happen to
- 1:42:01her family implodes. It's terrible.
- 1:42:04Really awful stuff. People getting gunned down the
- 1:42:08grandfather's funeral getting upset.
- 1:42:10You on eek, wreaking havoc, and all this.
- 1:42:12It's like her family just dies out and it feels like the
- 1:42:18family, what happens to Scarlett's family direction of
- 1:42:21Atlanta? Yeah.
- 1:42:22The destruction of Atlanta and Gone With the Wind and it took
- 1:42:25like, I know a lot of people have mixed feelings about Gone
- 1:42:28With the Wind, but Yeah, if you kind of apply the same, like,
- 1:42:31epic that Gone With the Wind. Is, this is like that for Korea.
- 1:42:36Very much like that. Yeah, I miss like that.
- 1:42:38Yeah. At least she never slapped her
- 1:42:40servants, which is not more than we can say, for Miss Scarlet.
- 1:42:43O'Hara. So at least she didn't, nobody
- 1:42:47was called. Ashley, that always bugged me
- 1:42:49the wrong. Ashley, Ashley, Ashley.
- 1:42:55Yeah, I was like, shut up. I hate the name.
- 1:42:58Ashley Period. And then she was like he was
- 1:43:01named Ashley and the way she said it was just so annoying.
- 1:43:05Okay, man, so we've covered a lot of ground here.
- 1:43:08Is there more that you want to talk?
- 1:43:11I think, oh my God, the grandpa. When I think, what I want to
- 1:43:15touch on with her grandfather is that he has such a gut reaction
- 1:43:20to Eugene saying that he's lowborn Grandpa Grandpa starts
- 1:43:27saying, like, how could you humiliate me like this?
- 1:43:30And that's unrealistic. I was like, well, it did seem
- 1:43:35realistic because he's just hella old on his way out and
- 1:43:38still has his pride hurt vanity. And Jeopardy reputation to
- 1:43:43uphold is actually humiliated by his precious granddaughter, the
- 1:43:47rebellious headstrong one who is intelligent a sniper by his own
- 1:43:53doing because he's the one who Initiated her training.
- 1:43:56That's right and all of a sudden she's in love with the lowborn.
- 1:43:59Oh my god, get the fuck out. Like it was so that was but
- 1:44:03she's his favorite granddaughter, excessive?
- 1:44:05Yes, he's the one. He like put all his like, you
- 1:44:08know, eggs in that basket yet her true cousin was an idiot,
- 1:44:11you know, or whatever, like not helpful and this, she's the one
- 1:44:14who was like his hopes and dreams and he really loved, you
- 1:44:18know, the her father who passed away and like, you know, never
- 1:44:21got to meet her mother and said he had all this like stuff
- 1:44:23riding on issuing and so I think that's what What is listed at
- 1:44:26this visceral reaction to Eugene's confession, which like,
- 1:44:29we were saying, was pretty realistic.
- 1:44:31But yeah, it was also out of pocket to be like, excuse you.
- 1:44:33But Eric, he was like, the lowborn and why are you doing
- 1:44:37this to me? And I was like, what do you have
- 1:44:40to do with it? It was very patriarchy pet, so
- 1:44:44much patriarchy in that moment, just coming to a head because
- 1:44:46you think he's an ally and then all of a sudden he like, does
- 1:44:49this 180 and it's like, oh my God, he's a classicist sexist.
- 1:44:53Like all these things like coming into play.
- 1:44:56Well, I think how could he not be like that still?
- 1:44:58He's still he lived. However, aged he lives he's like
- 1:45:02100 years old or something like he just say.
- 1:45:04Yeah so this is all new yes, this whole revolutionary thing
- 1:45:07having to support the righteous cause you never wanted to, he
- 1:45:09thought his kids were like silly for trying to fight but he
- 1:45:12funded the righteous Army for like years and years and years.
- 1:45:15So he was in on the plot but he just I guess wasn't in on the
- 1:45:21social Revolution that was happening.
- 1:45:23Yes he wasn't. That was a different Storia.
- 1:45:26Mmm. He was just wanted the Japan
- 1:45:28people to be out of there. Yeah I like that moment though
- 1:45:32after he leaves Eugene leaves. She's like I think you should go
- 1:45:36and he leaves and she runs after him and jumps the Garden Wall
- 1:45:41and she catches up to. Yeah she's like extremely
- 1:45:43emotional and she's like, please try to understand my grandfather
- 1:45:47and he plays it off. He does her kindness.
- 1:45:49He says I'm actually grateful. I got to see you again because
- 1:45:52of him. He's like you take after him.
- 1:45:54I wonder who taught you to This wonderful and he's really taking
- 1:45:58well, and he because she was running, she loses a shoe, very
- 1:46:03Cinderelly, he goes and puts it back on her and her they cut to
- 1:46:07her committee, right? And she's crying lip quivering
- 1:46:12quiet crying. Like she's like, like it's just
- 1:46:14moving everywhere and I have in my notes.
- 1:46:16Oh my God, she's breaking. Because it was such a good
- 1:46:21moment for her, obviously, she plays it kind of close to the
- 1:46:24chest throughout the show. Even though she does have
- 1:46:26emotional moments, she is very hard faced and so stoic that.
- 1:46:32Yeah, very stoic. And has a really good poker face
- 1:46:36in that moment. She just breaks and I loved it.
- 1:46:38I loved the vulnerability there. I mean, also another moment like
- 1:46:41this, when she pulls the ring out, from her whatever, she's
- 1:46:45wearing to be like, I'm still married to you.
- 1:46:47Yeah. Oh God, fake married.
- 1:46:50Yeah, I thought that was also similarly cuz she did.
- 1:46:53I mean we saw her little secret moves of like, I'm going to keep
- 1:46:55this ring. And act like I'm not wearing it
- 1:46:56like I'm handing back but then when she like just pulls out
- 1:46:58like I love you. Yeah.
- 1:47:01Oh man. So I mean, we could talk about
- 1:47:04that the Rings and stuff. Well yeah, I just, I really
- 1:47:11said, oh go on. Yeah.
- 1:47:14What do I have here? I have the in episode 21, he
- 1:47:18proposes to her and it's not the romantic proposal that everybody
- 1:47:25wants. Its out of necessity she needs.
- 1:47:27Has manipulated her love ya. I mean, he's using his love for
- 1:47:31her to get him to get her to Japan and he's like, well, the
- 1:47:36save this way is if you're my wife so they kind of forged the
- 1:47:39marriage and he hands her. He what is it there in the
- 1:47:42bakery? The French Hurry.
- 1:47:45And there's flour on the table, he writer pariba.
- 1:47:47Get ya. He writes love on the table in
- 1:47:53English and in place of oh he puts the ring.
- 1:47:56Oh, I died. I was like, I don't know, I wish
- 1:48:00I wasn't so susceptible to that dumb moment but I loved it.
- 1:48:04It was horrific and wonderful at the same time because you know,
- 1:48:08that it's corny. It's corny.
- 1:48:10But it's not really sincere because she's like effective.
- 1:48:13Yeah. Yes.
- 1:48:14That too. She's lying in a sense and
- 1:48:17manipulating him and when he takes the ring off the table and
- 1:48:21hands it to her, puts it on a ring, on her finger, tells her
- 1:48:24the meaning behind it. The Western of story of the game
- 1:48:28including me the naming convention because he's got to
- 1:48:30take his last name and all that shit and they pan back to the
- 1:48:33table and it says live now instead of love and I was like
- 1:48:38if that's not a clear sign of how this thing is going to end.
- 1:48:43They are not going to To end up in love, love each other.
- 1:48:46Like the love is not going to win out.
- 1:48:48She's gonna live because of what he's doing for her and yeah it's
- 1:48:53just he's just very forlorn in that moment.
- 1:48:56It's not a triumphant moment, not happy.
- 1:48:58He has to fake the marriage to help her accomplish the mission.
- 1:49:01And yeah, it's just versus a sincere manifestation of their
- 1:49:05life portrait. They take the wedding, you're
- 1:49:10getting nervous here because some of these things are just
- 1:49:14Manufactured to me. So why do we all watch kdramas?
- 1:49:20It's this stuff. This is like a job.
- 1:49:23Why are we watching this show? Yeah, yeah, exactly yeah.
- 1:49:27Oh, man, but they lead the day. They leave on the train to for
- 1:49:30the mission and she's dressed in Western ladies clothes.
- 1:49:32Not the suit like the looking, so it's sexy.
- 1:49:36Do mask suit. She's not in that.
- 1:49:41She's got a dry, love that? Yeah.
- 1:49:44When he, when he saw, he puts it on.
- 1:49:45Oh my God. Just stop it.
- 1:49:47People all these people, but it's so great.
- 1:49:49You know, she looks cute. She looks stunning in this
- 1:49:51moment and he, he acts so well, here he begun.
- 1:49:56You can see that she takes his breath away.
- 1:49:59Like he's literally like, like he kind of catches his breath
- 1:50:01and he says, if my last memory of Charleston is this beautiful,
- 1:50:05I'll never forget it and I was like, oh yeah, she yeah.
- 1:50:14Yeah. Oh God.
- 1:50:15But thank you can say like it all this wedding talk is remind
- 1:50:17me of how sad I was about the fact that the loneliest and most
- 1:50:20hurt people ended up dying alone.
- 1:50:23Yes. You know.
- 1:50:25Like, he song to like, who knows?
- 1:50:27I know he lived or no, he died. I left my dies.
- 1:50:30Oh, he died. So everybody dies looking.
- 1:50:33Nobody got anything, but of the Rings and stuff.
- 1:50:39That's our finish up. So she figures out that he
- 1:50:41should be wearing a ring to a matching ring.
- 1:50:44And she puts the ring on him, because he had it on him.
- 1:50:47And she finally says, I love you.
- 1:50:49She says, I love you. I've always been in love with
- 1:50:50you tears streaming. He lets out a breath that he'd
- 1:50:54been holding evidently and it's just a really sad, sad moment.
- 1:51:00But one that, you know, it's going to happen.
- 1:51:02You know what's gonna? You just like?
- 1:51:04Oh my God. So two more deaths.
- 1:51:08And then I think we should start wrapping it up.
- 1:51:10We've gone really long on this episode but Okay, so we song
- 1:51:16dies, he ends up hiding love him, he was great like
- 1:51:21underrated character. I would say super underrated
- 1:51:25because what she was saying and tell me if you think the same
- 1:51:27about that thing. Anyway, going I will I will
- 1:51:29watch me saying eventually, I promise.
- 1:51:32So he ends up hiding like a time capsule of photos and evidence
- 1:51:35of the righteous Army and all of the like human rights
- 1:51:40violations. And shit that Japan has been
- 1:51:42doing and he Hides it and then he gets caught for his pro
- 1:51:46career newspaper. They want Intel who's the
- 1:51:49righteous Army, where's Ash in all this stuff and he just gives
- 1:51:53his previous line. I like beautiful but useless
- 1:51:56things and in the end he was a patriot and a journalist as
- 1:52:01well. Very died.
- 1:52:03A romantic deal of like you can fight with guns and I'll fight
- 1:52:06with words. I mean it was really, yeah, it's
- 1:52:08very true. Right.
- 1:52:09And so like, you know, there that's documentation of witness
- 1:52:12being a witness. Yeah.
- 1:52:13But Has to history is also important.
- 1:52:15Yeah, yeah, lutely. Yeah, one last hit to the Head,
- 1:52:18sends them to the ground and the ticking of his grandfather's
- 1:52:23pocket watch which was an omen throughout the show.
- 1:52:28Definitely its lowest a couple deaths in a way and it's a
- 1:52:31couple itemizes. Also I know it was brutal and
- 1:52:35now finally, it's ticking. It's last time for Hibbett slows
- 1:52:39down to nothing and he's out of time.
- 1:52:42It's done. It's very almost anticlimactic,
- 1:52:46almost too banal of an ending for such a character, fast
- 1:52:53fasil, mmm style, but not really, but it made sense for
- 1:52:57him. It makes sense for did.
- 1:52:58Yeah. What about the Last Stand in the
- 1:53:00woods for the rest of the righteous Army that did make it
- 1:53:02out there? Like for they split up until
- 1:53:04like four platoons try to make it to Manchuria, a couple of
- 1:53:08Petunias. Don't get outta there completely
- 1:53:10surrounded in the woods but they, you know, Faye lately.
- 1:53:13Raise the flag to fight until The Bitter End and the Potter,
- 1:53:18do the Manchurian, okay. Yeah.
- 1:53:20The powder gives like a great rallying speech to and that's it
- 1:53:24like they all die. I mean again when you start the
- 1:53:28show and you know the history of Korea it's like there's no way
- 1:53:31the righteous Army is going to like win somehow like other
- 1:53:33wiser. This is not happening, right?
- 1:53:36So it was just sad the whole time and yeah the putter out
- 1:53:41here making hard decisions like you know, I don't know.
- 1:53:45Like I loved his character in terms of like they showed the
- 1:53:48conflicting way to lead something like the righteous
- 1:53:51armies, that were his faction of it and the decisions you have to
- 1:53:53make in this in the stuff. The sacrifices you have to make
- 1:53:56the He was the one who's explain to everyone like you know, this
- 1:54:00is how it's going down and yeah, I don't know, it's just sad at
- 1:54:04the end. I think the ending was so sad.
- 1:54:05It was the words and you know Japan's gonna win.
- 1:54:07You know dripping, you do channelings.
- 1:54:09Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:54:10And he's in power alert for decades.
- 1:54:13It's crazy. Right?
- 1:54:15You'll the death of E1 eek. I kind of wished that Gunner
- 1:54:20Jang was in on it, or that one ich knew that she was trained by
- 1:54:25the Gunner. Because there was like this
- 1:54:27whole running theme of like I'm going to get the guy who did
- 1:54:29this to me and one take and Gunner, Jack at all Jang, had
- 1:54:33all of his Bad Blood because he killed his dad.
- 1:54:36He shot his leg made him a cripple and all this stuff and
- 1:54:40it never kind of manifested. But I guess that's just sort of
- 1:54:44included gun or Jiang when she shoots his shoulder.
- 1:54:48She shoots wanted shoulder and then they flashed quickly back
- 1:54:52to the Gunner as a teenager and so he's kind of their In spirit
- 1:54:57again. She passed to the child actor
- 1:54:59props of time. Yes, he was great.
- 1:55:01His training, I guess allowed her to take the three shots and
- 1:55:04his daughter. He picked up the mess did not
- 1:55:08shed a single tear. She was already feeling super
- 1:55:11guilty and torn about everything.
- 1:55:13Her dad did all the sins of him and what's cool is that Asian
- 1:55:21killed one week without ever knowing that he killed her
- 1:55:23parents. That's right.
- 1:55:25Well that was an interesting thing too because I went it was
- 1:55:27not Gunner jianghu, got to get what it was like you know in
- 1:55:31real life you don't get to kill your enemies or do or get you
- 1:55:34know, you don't get the Revenge that you deserve and right.
- 1:55:37And so I was like, maybe they're trying to like, say something
- 1:55:39about that, where it's like, well maybe he lives or
- 1:55:41something, I wasn't sure what was going to happen, necessarily
- 1:55:43with him, but everybody who needs died, does end up dying,
- 1:55:46which is again, that payoff, that comes that you kind of
- 1:55:48want. But, but also, Like yeah, it's
- 1:55:51interesting that she that they made it like she didn't even
- 1:55:53know, she's getting revenge that she was due and the fact that he
- 1:55:56wasn't involved really. So that was just an interesting
- 1:56:00little. The details of the show of the
- 1:56:01how they wrote, in what they included in how they portray.
- 1:56:04Yeah, that was so good. Yeah, Gunner, Zhang's death,
- 1:56:09awful, no good. Terry, what handful literal
- 1:56:13flames of Glory, those are all flames of Glory.
- 1:56:16He resolves his issues with the King.
- 1:56:19Because obviously, one explode, this spun the story that the
- 1:56:22king abandoned, the people who are defending the court during
- 1:56:27that encouraging for the US. And then he had a bad blood with
- 1:56:31him in the king and the King was like I'm so he didn't say he was
- 1:56:34sorry, it was basically said he leases I can't make it out, I'm
- 1:56:37sorry, but I feel bad and whatever and you know, he they
- 1:56:42did kind of hash it out. And in the end, he does die.
- 1:56:46Like defending the, the key The king and all this, all these
- 1:56:50people. And yes, he gets the, the
- 1:56:53young'uns out of the military academy, after they put the span
- 1:56:56of about his marriage to the Archer lady.
- 1:56:58What the hell was that about? What they actually, I was just a
- 1:57:01mess with us where they actually married or like I think they
- 1:57:04were like common-law married. I guess I don't know.
- 1:57:06I have no idea. I thought that they were gonna
- 1:57:08follow religion, or like, could they be merry like there.
- 1:57:12So early. I think they could.
- 1:57:13But like I understood that they were not married, they just had
- 1:57:17a long-standing flirtation, they had on spoken.
- 1:57:19Feelings for each other and they were looking out from the you
- 1:57:22think they weren't even in a relation?
- 1:57:23No, and then when he, he kind of said towards the end of like
- 1:57:27when they were separated, that we're going to leave together
- 1:57:32and will Forge a life together. He kind of a kind of, like
- 1:57:34halfway said that they loved each other.
- 1:57:36She said he would, she was waiting for a handsome man to
- 1:57:38come back. That's what, that's what that
- 1:57:40conversation ended up being. Like, I'm basically going to
- 1:57:43wait for him here whenever he's done, we're going to pick up and
- 1:57:46like move together. We're going to continue this.
- 1:57:49Gather and then he she ends up hanging.
- 1:57:52She's that it was horrible. She's the first death of the I
- 1:57:55was horrible horrendous. Yes.
- 1:57:58Like so brutal brutal and wanting it was have to hanging
- 1:58:02and he shows up and he can't even look at her.
- 1:58:06He's just like brim down on his hat.
- 1:58:09Like cannot look at her but he screams to cut her down because
- 1:58:12this is his wife. And I was like oh my god did he
- 1:58:16just claim her as his wife all of a sudden or what a day?
- 1:58:18This reads? Like my intended.
- 1:58:20This is my intended. Maybe it's like that.
- 1:58:22I don't know. Either it was a little confusing
- 1:58:24but so brutal nonetheless, yeah, the love stories.
- 1:58:29Did not catch a break. Did you understand anything
- 1:58:34about the 7 traders of 1905 of the five traders of 1905?
- 1:58:39The seventh round, not really. But I will say, in my research
- 1:58:42there's all these little skirmishes and things and like,
- 1:58:44Was like people who are kind of like infiltrated the king side
- 1:58:48of things and we're really like kind of like Japanese spies and
- 1:58:51like, we're doing kind of these underrated things and that's
- 1:58:53what led to some of the like earlier skirmishes and different
- 1:58:56things like that, right? And and that's when things like
- 1:59:00Japan. Just like Japan was just like
- 1:59:02squatting essentially in a way and it seems, like from what I
- 1:59:05read at least and in the beginning and then King Kong was
- 1:59:09like, let me just, like, get some formal formal treaties and
- 1:59:12stuff to get other people involved.
- 1:59:13So that we Can he was trying had good intentions to get creative
- 1:59:17lights and power. But yeah, there was all these
- 1:59:19other little things that happen. There's a lot of like Farmers
- 1:59:21against the king revolting and this and that be coverage,
- 1:59:23various reasons. Yeah, for that even before he
- 1:59:25was king. So I'm assuming it's, I don't
- 1:59:28know, it's tough like Beyond me and because they made a point of
- 1:59:31having me, son, come and take their photograph.
- 1:59:35Okay, so I want to talk a little about this, the righteous Army.
- 1:59:37We've long as that we've young, I press this right in Korean.
- 1:59:41Okay. So the thing about them was,
- 1:59:43they were made. They were made up of like the
- 1:59:45tenant farmers and then, like the Army, the military people,
- 1:59:49who got kind of, like, kicked out after Japan's like Japan
- 1:59:51invaded, the king's Palace, like, Dethrone to the chaos.
- 1:59:55The King was like, still signing stuff.
- 1:59:57Sort of, I think I'm a half is just like a puppet came against
- 1:59:59like Japan. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:00:01Japan was pulling the strings and so-so.
- 2:00:04But yeah that is what who the righteous Army was like those
- 2:00:07types of the same people we saw and I wanted to mention to speak
- 2:00:11on journalism, a little bit. There was Frederick Mackenzie
- 2:00:13shows up at the end of the show and takes the photos, the
- 2:00:16righteous Army. So one thing that I found out
- 2:00:18that I didn't quite realize the time.
- 2:00:19First, all that is based off a real photo you can look up.
- 2:00:22When you look up Rachel's Army, it is the only known photo of
- 2:00:25anyone who's in the righteous Army that exists, according to
- 2:00:28what I've read, I don't quote me on that.
- 2:00:30But as my ready that and they say this, Yeah, I also brought
- 2:00:36it elsewhere because I was like, I don't know what's going on
- 2:00:38here but they do they sound. So only photo in the show it is.
- 2:00:41I think the journalist said or whatever that this is probably,
- 2:00:45the only photo that will exist of you guys.
- 2:00:47Yes, okay, so for sure, if I were her child is because that
- 2:00:50does end up being the only photo that exists of the righteous
- 2:00:53Army. I don't know if they have the
- 2:00:54names of the list of names. I was like, going to try and
- 2:00:56like Google, it be like that. Screenings are had to Google
- 2:00:58because ever have like the same names, you know, like a lot.
- 2:01:00So yeah, I didn't really go there, but but then I also
- 2:01:03wanted to kind of mention And another journalist.
- 2:01:07So Philip Json was actually, so I was trying to find out like
- 2:01:10was Eugene Choi. So the thing that is going to be
- 2:01:12historical fiction, is it kind of brings people to try and pay
- 2:01:14attention to history or like find out about his?
- 2:01:16Yeah, yeah so that's a good thing.
- 2:01:18So I was like it's Eugene Choi and that's a common question.
- 2:01:20If you look at mr. Sunshine.
- 2:01:20It's like it was using to a real person.
- 2:01:22Was this is a true story, right? So there was a man named Philip
- 2:01:25Chase on and Jace are Jason maybe but it's spelled j is 0
- 2:01:28hn. O mistress spell.
- 2:01:30Like almost like Korean spelling in a way or something but Philip
- 2:01:33Jason, he was a Korean born. In naturalized US citizen and a
- 2:01:37former member of the Enlightenment party.
- 2:01:38He published this, like, bilingual English, Korean
- 2:01:41newspaper called the independence to educate create.
- 2:01:44However, what it was for, it was actually like American
- 2:01:46propaganda or something. It was educate Koreans, I like
- 2:01:49democracy and like you know, modernizations that these are
- 2:01:52good, things like you want this trolley here, like this
- 2:01:54electric, whatever. Yeah, out of those, those
- 2:01:56specific things but he was trying to promote that stuff and
- 2:01:59so there was sort of like this Eugene asked person who existed
- 2:02:03these journalists Like, you know, it kind of makes it like
- 2:02:06what Frederick Mackenzie, didn't he song of like independent
- 2:02:10journalism, right, you know Koreans, I don't know.
- 2:02:12It all kind of like somehow makes a full circle.
- 2:02:16Yeah, now that's interesting. Yeah, that's great.
- 2:02:19So, you know, I can see, you know, I can see them looking it
- 2:02:23up and be like, well we could just make it two characters but
- 2:02:26that's if anyone does. And I think so too.
- 2:02:28Again, just to go back briefly to Snowdrop or if you are to
- 2:02:31take some of this stuff to heart, it's like if you don't
- 2:02:34know it, And even if you know it but you didn't live through.
- 2:02:36It's like different, right? So it's different to have
- 2:02:39actually gone through. I think in America because we
- 2:02:41haven't like thankfully had any much happen in our soils and
- 2:02:44like you know Generations but 9/11 is I think something that
- 2:02:47people who lived through have like a certain concept of
- 2:02:49absolutely and after when Kennedy died, so previous
- 2:02:52generation, only right? Exactly that, exactly that.
- 2:02:55So if you who where were you and Kennedy died?
- 2:02:57Were you on 9/11 those things? Those are kind of the closest,
- 2:03:00maybe we as like very privileged, a kids can relate to
- 2:03:04You think of like people who are Korean or have create
- 2:03:07impression, pride, and think of these events versus us, just
- 2:03:10because to me is like, media and entertainment, right?
- 2:03:13So interesting. I love your points.
- 2:03:16Okay, I'm coming up to the end of my notes, to be honest, and I
- 2:03:19don't know if I have the energy to like continue talking about
- 2:03:22mr. Sunshine.
- 2:03:22It's just so overwhelming but I think Eugene dying is the, I
- 2:03:27guess icing on the cake. The cherry on top of this awful,
- 2:03:33like really emotional Emotional exchange few episodes.
- 2:03:36The last six episodes are just Bloodshed hit after hit after
- 2:03:39hit betrayal after betrayal and, you know, he died.
- 2:03:44He sacrifices himself to save the what little was left of the
- 2:03:48righteous Army including his girl and he uncouples the train
- 2:03:53and you know, he dies, just shy of the sunlight because it's at
- 2:03:58the very end of this tunnel, it's very symbolic.
- 2:04:00And you know, this is my history, this is my love story.
- 2:04:04This is why. Just I have to go wish you
- 2:04:06Victory. All of these things that he
- 2:04:07says, I can voiceover are just crazy.
- 2:04:11I mean, where else could he go? You know.
- 2:04:14Like that's what I just kept thinking in his death is like,
- 2:04:15this stuff is like seems like it's in vain because it's yeah,
- 2:04:18it's for her. Like, she probably would live
- 2:04:20somehow, you know, there is an argument or a point to be made.
- 2:04:23I think that yoojin Cho toi is role in this show is greatly
- 2:04:30diminished after he goes to prison.
- 2:04:34For three years and they have the time Jump to 1907 when they
- 2:04:38come back from 1907. Like, it is almost a completely
- 2:04:41different show. It is like, it's a different
- 2:04:44country. Yeah, different country and
- 2:04:47different but very high stakes and you get the endgame episodes
- 2:04:51and you're just kind of like wondering where Eugene's
- 2:04:54character is going to land here. Obviously, everyone is doomed to
- 2:04:58die but you know, this character motivations we touched on that
- 2:05:03earlier, like, what is his Deal. He's so wishy-washy.
- 2:05:06But at the same time, very Resolute staunchly American.
- 2:05:11And honestly, I think that they didn't know what to do with him.
- 2:05:15Like they knew what to do with. Yeah, good on me.
- 2:05:20Yeah, I feel like they knew what to do with him way more than
- 2:05:22they knew how to do with Eugene, they definitely clapped.
- 2:05:25When he wrapped his scenes like they just like you're finished,
- 2:05:30you're done and we've wrapped this nicely.
- 2:05:32Yeah. But then I like I thought when a
- 2:05:35Sheen was hurt and she was kind of away for a few episodes
- 2:05:38because she was hurt, which is random.
- 2:05:39Yeah. And you didn't have her around
- 2:05:41if you were just doing I. First of all I would love a
- 2:05:43spin-off of so many these characters to exist again in my
- 2:05:46fanfic of my mind that while I would never, I will never write
- 2:05:48but I would like to know what they do but when she's gone it's
- 2:05:52kind of like. Okay bye.
- 2:05:54But then it's like yeah, like how would they have ended
- 2:05:57quote-unquote her story to like if we kept calling her through
- 2:06:00until she probably eventually dies.
- 2:06:02I don't know what else. Really gets imprisoned or
- 2:06:04something. I don't know.
- 2:06:04What else, what happened to her? Yeah.
- 2:06:07I kind of thought the same thing of like there's nowhere else for
- 2:06:09her to go almost. Yeah.
- 2:06:10And even like keeping Eugene around or not.
- 2:06:13Yeah, after three years when he's in prison there's like
- 2:06:15nothing else left for him to do. Yeah.
- 2:06:18Like he's lost. Some Edge and I don't know, it
- 2:06:21was that many the show should have just ended what around
- 2:06:25then, you know. Yeah.
- 2:06:27And had a weird sort of stinger with like, and Japanese the
- 2:06:30Japanese forces took over a Dethrone, the king and whatever
- 2:06:33year. And like, the trial was weird to
- 2:06:36his trial. The trial was, oh, God.
- 2:06:38No one can do a good energy. But I'm telling you this right
- 2:06:41now, the American like Americans are the only ones who can do an
- 2:06:47American trial in In. Okay, then I watch my eyes, can
- 2:06:51see the accent. I'm telling you like, the
- 2:06:53portrayal of this trial was like Bonkers.
- 2:06:56I was like, okay, so there's four people there in this like
- 2:07:00jury. Nobody else in here and I just
- 2:07:04seen like, like, uh, time so many issues really, that's what
- 2:07:09I'm saying. Like this whole show was great,
- 2:07:11but then has like so many issues.
- 2:07:13Those like, I don't know. Yeah, take away.
- 2:07:14Some Soju bottles for me and what you did.
- 2:07:18All right, Nina. We've been here like for over
- 2:07:20two hours. I think we're done, I think
- 2:07:22we've talked about so many things, we chewed on the fat a
- 2:07:28lot for the show. And I think that if you are
- 2:07:31listening and you've listened this far, please, like let us
- 2:07:34know what the hell. You thought about mr.
- 2:07:36Sunshine, like reach out to us and let us know what you thought
- 2:07:41of the episode. If you made some points that you
- 2:07:42hadn't thought of, if you want to contribute to the
- 2:07:44conversation, you felt like you needed to jump in at some point.
- 2:07:47Like let us know. Tell us Us and apologies, have
- 2:07:50any of the history I gave us a little inaccurate or Off the
- 2:07:53Mark, or something says trying to read and interpret it all for
- 2:07:56this recording. So, you know, obviously don't
- 2:07:58have the full knowledge and background.
- 2:08:00Yeah. I think in their next lives are
- 2:08:02all going to be okay, though. Hopefully, they're all meeting
- 2:08:07in heaven, they're all meeting. However, it happened a good on.
- 2:08:10They had this whole thing was like, walking off his Spirit was
- 2:08:12literally walking away. Oh yeah, he's sorry, he's buying
- 2:08:16dreary surreal. He's like, yeah, they when they
- 2:08:18come back, Enough like everybody else.
- 2:08:20Just died. And yeah, that was it.
- 2:08:22Yeah, you got like a Corporal Spirit like just walk out.
- 2:08:25Like they love them to have. You could tell the rider, the
- 2:08:28beauty they really loved. Good job, Mase character, and,
- 2:08:32you know, then again, have stood up acting.
- 2:08:35This was so to me, I don't watch as many dramas as you do,
- 2:08:38because I don't have the time for that, but I would love to
- 2:08:41and also, I kind of am curious if you thought there actually
- 2:08:44was good, as I thought it was maybe.
- 2:08:45Oh yeah. It was good.
- 2:08:46Really good. Amazing history.
- 2:08:49Yeah, 10/10 the acting for the acting.
- 2:08:52Okay, I think we're good Mina. Thank you.
- 2:08:55Thank you so much for coming on this show for being so gracious
- 2:08:59about the hurricane and for being very flexible.
- 2:09:03Where can people find you online?
- 2:09:05If they haven't listened to the novel era episode and already
- 2:09:07looked you up, Yes, please find me on Kpop bookshelf on
- 2:09:12Instagram. That's mainly why?
