Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The dedication of Saint Michael the Archangel, September 29 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of this feast, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, September 29 was formerly dedicated to all the angels as evident by the introit, collect, gradual, and communion. Wherefore, Pope Boniface the second, about the year of our Lord 530, chose that date to dedicate a church in the great circus at Rome to Saint Michael. The mass composed for the occasion is that of the eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost, and it relates to the dedication of a church.

Today's mass was composed more recently. The Hebrew meaning of Michael, Michael, is who is like God and recalls the combat which took place in heaven between the Archangel of God who deserved to be placed at the head of the heavenly host and the devil. Having fallen through sin into the power of Satan, it is Saint Michael's part to continue the fight for our deliverance as evident in the alleluia in the prayer after mass. Wherefore our guardian angels are subordinate to him. Saint Michael conquered Satan's pride and obtains humility for us.

It is also he who presides over the worship of adoration rendered to the most high for he offers to God the prayers of the saints symbolized by incense whose smoke rises towards heaven recalled in the operatory in the blessing of the incense. When a Christian has left this world, we pray that the standard bearer, Saint Michael, should introduce him into heaven. He is also often represented with the scales of divine justice wherein souls are weighed. His name is mentioned in the Confedior after that of Mary who is Queen of the Angels. Saint Michael was the protecting angel of the synagogue as he is now of the church which has succeeded it.

To him the liturgy attributes the revelation of the future made to Saint John in the Apocalypse. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit. Bless the Lord, all ye his angels, you that are mighty in strength, and execute his word, hearkening to the voice of his orders.
• 3:26
Bless the Lord, o my soul, and let all that is within me bless his holy name. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Bless the Lord all ye his angels, you that are mighty in strength, and execute his word hearkening to the voice of his orders. The Collect, let us pray.
• 4:08
O God who hast constituted the services of angels and of men in a wonderful order, mercifully grant that they who ever stand before thy face to do the service in heaven may also defend our life upon earth through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the apocalypse of Saint John. In those days, God made known things which must soon find their due accomplishment, sending his angel to disclose the pattern of it to his servant John, one who bore witness for God's word and for the truth concerning Jesus Christ as his own eyes had seen it. A blessing on him who reads this and on all who listen to these words of prophecy and keep true to their message.

The time is close at hand. Thus John writes to the seven churches in Asia, grace and peace be yours from him who is and ever was and is still to come. And from the seven spirits that stand before his throne. And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, firstborn of the risen dead, who rules over all earthly kings and who has proved his love for us by washing us clean from our sins in his own blood. The gradual, bless the Lord all ye his angels, you that are mighty in strength, and execute his word, hearkening to the voice of his orders.
• 6:24
Bless the Lord, o my soul, and let all that is within me bless his holy name. Alleluia. Alleluia. Holy Archangel Michael, be our shield in battle so that we may not be lost in the dread day of judgment. Alleluia.

A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew. The disciples came to Jesus at that time and said, Tell us, who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven? Whereupon Jesus called to his side a little child to whom he gave a place in the midst of them and said, believe me, unless you become like little children again, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. He is greatest in the kingdom of heaven who will abase himself like this little child. He who gives welcome to such a child as this in my name gives welcome to me.
• 7:40
And if anyone hurts the conscience of one of these little ones that believe in me, he had better have been drowned in the depths of the sea with a millstone hung about his neck. Woe to the world for the hurt done to consciences. It must needs be that such hurt should come, but woe to the man through whom it comes. If thy hand or thy foot is an occasion of failing to thee, cut it off and cast it away from thee. Better for thee to enter into life crippled or lame than to have two hands or two feet when thou art cast into eternal fire.
• 8:37
And if thy eye is an occasion of falling to thee, pluck it out and cast it away from thee. Better for thee to enter into life with one eye than to have two eyes when thou art cast into the fires of hell. See to it that you do not treat one of these little ones with contempt. I tell you, they have angels of their own in heaven that behold the face of my heavenly father continually. The offertory.
• 9:24
An angel stood by the altar of the temple holding a golden censer and incense was given him in plenty and the smoke of the incense of the prayers of the saints ascended up into the presence of God. The secret. We offer unto thee, O Lord, the sacrifice of praise, and humbly beseech thee that through the prayers of the angels who plead for us, thou wouldst graciously accept it, and make it of avail to us for salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface, Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, o holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify.
• 10:57
We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
• 11:27
Hosanna in the highest. The communion. O ye angels of the Lord, bless the Lord, praise and exalt him above all for ever. The post communion. Let us pray.
• 11:50
Supported by the intercession of blessed Michael, thine Archangel, we humbly beseech thee, O Lord, that what has passed our lips, we may lay hold of with our minds through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. Saint Gabriel, pray for us.
• 12:34
Saint Raphael, pray for us. Holy Michael, Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou o prince of the heavenly host by the power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
