- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Some headlines that we're gonna get to today on this very exciting episode.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: We're gonna recap some MLB scores from the weekend, touch on some soccer notes, and then I will be joined by a second-time guest who's already been in the tailgate before Brandon Ogden.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: We will go through our MLB postseason awards before recapping everything that was in week one of college football before doing a little tail the tailgate with a friend for week two.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: A couple big stories that I want to lead off the show with.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: One is just the fact that Ben Simmons, the basketball player, is back in the NBA.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: He signed a one-year$3.5 million deal with the Sacramento Kings on Saturday, and that is an official transaction on the NBA waiver report or the transaction report.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: And Ben Simmons is going to be making his comeback to the NBA this year.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Um he missed all of the 2025-26 season, but I guess he had a good workout for the Kings General Manager in Miami uh last week, and it was enough to convince them to pull the trigger on a minimum deal.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: So Ben Simmons back in the NBA.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: And while we're talking about California and all the things that come with it, Stan Cronkey, as if he didn't own enough sports teams already, has agreed to purchase the Anaheim Angels for four billion dollars.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: So those that are not familiar, Stan Cronkey of the Colorado Avalanche, the Los Angeles Rams, um, the Colorado Rapids, the Denver Nuggets, Liverpool.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: He has quite an arsenal, so to speak, at his ownership disposal.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Now he gets into the baseball world as well.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Um, that can only mean good things for the LA Angels.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Stan Cronke's teams typically spend aggressively, they make aggressive moves, and they're not no um cowards to try to go for titles, which is something that seems like a foreign concept to most Angels fans.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: So Stan Cronke, the new owner of the LA Angels.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Now let's talk on some soccer.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: We'll start right there with Stan Cronkey's Liverpool.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Uh, they got their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town, Newcastle and Bournemouth.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: They played to a really exciting 2-2 draw thanks to a great late goal by Jacob Ramsey of Newcastle.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Newcastle continues to play well and score goals.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Arsenal, they win their third consecutive match to start the English Premier League season.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Another strong performance from Kai Havertz.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: They defeat Chelsea 2-1.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Everton and my manchester United Red Devils play a back and forth game.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: United went into the half, up one to nothing.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: And we saw three more goals coming in the second half, including the tying goal and stoppage time to force a 2-2 draw as Everton got the late brace to go even with Manchester United.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: And lastly, in the EPL, Whole City yet to lose an EPL game as they have two wins and one draw after three games after a 0-0 draw against winless Aston Villa.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: We've made all that commotion about Whole City and their opening game victory against Manchester United.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: And Whole City has turned out to be a little bit of a promotion wagon.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: They could be this year's Leicester City.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Let's get back stateside, though, to the MLS, where the number one team in the West, Vancouver, they hosted St.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Louis City and got routed thanks to three first half goals for St.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Louis as they continue their match unbeaten streak all the way up to 14 games now, dating back to before the World Cup.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Simon Becker scored another goal for St.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Louis City as they take care of Vancouver FC.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Toronto and Chicago, they played an incredible back and forth game that saw the East Contender Chicago allow a late goal right before stoppage time, ending that crazy game in a 4-4 tie between Toronto and Chicago Fire.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Casemiro and Luis Suarez, two guys you are very well familiar with if you pay attention to soccer on the international stage.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: They both score as Inter Miami and Atlanta draw 2-2.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: And Peter Musa, the Croatian, scores two goals, including a late penalty kick winner for FC Dallas to go past sporting Kansas City 4-3.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: A few other notes from around the soccer world.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Barcelona, they have won all four of their games to start the La Liga season as they get two goals from the World Cup star Lamin Yamal and a five to nothing win over Valencia.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Two of the best teams in Spain, though, they played on Friday, and that was Real Betis and Real Madrid.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: And Troy Perrett, he was the difference in this game.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: He scored a goal in the 81st minute to propel Betis over Madrid with a 1 to nothing win.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Pierre Emmerich Abuyamang scored his fourth goal in as many games to start the season as Deportivo knockoff Villarreal 3-2.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: UCL participant Como spanked Genoa on Friday afternoon with a 4-1 victory in Serie A.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Speaking of Serie A, Enter Milan got two goals from Lotoro Martinez to lift Enter to a 3-2 victory over slow starting and winless at this point, Napoli.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Roma got a goal in stoppage time to ensure that they remained undefeated with three wins to start their Serie A season with a 2-1 victory over Atalanta.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Borisia Dortmund popped in a late-on goal to defeat Hoffenheim 3-2 in the second match day for the Bundesliga.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Elversburg also defeated Boresia Maugen-Gladbach 4-3 to get their second win and as many games to open their Bundesliga season.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: And FC Freiburg, they're the only other unbeaten team so far in the Bundesliga, thanks to a one-to-nothing victory on Saturday.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Some exciting soccer we saw this week.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Even more exciting is that this week we will see the beginning group stage match day of the UEFA Championship League.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: UCL play starts in group stage with match day one this week.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: So if you are a fan of a top team in any of the European leagues, be sure to be prepared for UCL matchups every week now.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Let's get to some baseball news.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: The Phillies hosted the Braves.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Cy Young hopes hopeful Chris Sale continued his magical season, dishing out seven strikeouts over six innings against Philly starter Christopher Sanchez.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: But Acunya drives in two runs and to win games on Friday and Sunday in order for the Braves to take two out of three from Philly.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: And they now move up five games in the NL East.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: MVP hopeful Pete Crow Armstrong hit his 40th home run of the year and is just the second player with 40 bombs this year behind Philly's slugger Kyle Schwarber.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: The Cubs also got Craig pitching out Friday night from Shoto Imanaga as the Cubs take two out of three and put the Marlins playoff hopes on life support, as the Cubs now have a five-game lead on the Diamondbacks for the last wild card spot.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: Meanwhile, the fish fall four games back of Arizona in third place out of the wild card.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: Speaking of those Diamondbacks, their bullpen allowed just one run in three games against the leader in the AL West, Houston, and just eight total runs over the series as the Diamondbacks take two out of three games, including a tenth inning victory Saturday night.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Arizona now has a half-game league over the Padres for the last NL Wildcard.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: After dropping two out of three to the Mets, the Rays hit the road to Arlington, Texas.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: Everything was bigger in Texas except for the ways the Rays play baseball.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: And this was a back and forth series where the winner of all four of these games scored at least six runs, but the Rays get shut out Thursday, and then they go up five to one on Sunday in hopes of being able to take three of four before the Rangers ultimately scored six unanswered runs to split this series two to two.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Now the Rays traveled down to Atlanta, Georgia to start a series with the Braves on Tuesday night.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: The White Sox, who are poised to become the first team in Major League Baseball to have back-to-pack 100 lost seasons and then make it to the playoffs, are now two and a half games up on the AL Central race, following an explosion in the series deciding game Sunday between the Twins and themselves, where they end up beating the Twins 10-1.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: As of all people, Randall Gritchick continues to swing a hot back for the Pale Hoes.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Despite having the best record in all of baseball, the Brewers lose two of their or the last two games of the series in Cincinnati by a total score of 17 to 11.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: They still hold a seven-game lead over the Cubs in the NL Central.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: And a very important series, both for the AL East race and the NL Wildcard.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Watch the Yankees drop two out of three very close games against the Padres.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: And ultimately the Padres got themselves back up, as I mentioned, only a half game back in that NL Wildcard race.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: And the Yankees and the Rays have been doing a little bit of teeter-tottering, but the Yankees still find themselves four games back as they get ready to start a series with the Colorado Rockies for three games beginning Tuesday night.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: All right, coming up next, Brandon will join the show.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: We will go through some MLB award predictions, Cy Young, rookie of the year, and MVPs.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: And then we'll get into all of our reactions to all of the biggest games and performances from week one that was college football.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Before we give you our tail, the tailgate picks for week two.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Stick around.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: It's a makeup for sure.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: The first repeat guest of the show.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: And we have a couple things to talk about before we get into week one of college football.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: We are gonna that we have about three weeks left in the MLB regular season.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: I thought this would be a good time for us to line out who we think are gonna win some of these MLB postseason awards.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: So let's start with the pitchers, and we can just ping pong this if you want to.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Um let's start with the AL Psi Young, and I'll let you go first.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Who do you think should and will win the AL Cy Young Award?
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh so the only problem with the last three weeks of all of these awards is it feels like a lot of it's pretty settled.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: Um so some of these I'm gonna make a little bit of argument on, and even though I don't necessarily believe them, and I'm sure you're probably doing the same.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: So, like, who will win the award?
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: I I think it's gonna be your guy Schlitler, Schlitter.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: Um, but I think there is a case for Cease, um, just in the event of like maybe for Cam, they're like, you know, he's so young, he'll win one eventually.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: So we'll give one to a more veteran guy.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: Um, and Dylan Cease, who's had a really good year.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: I know uh, you know, Toronto's a little bit down from where they were, obviously, last year, but you look at for the K's for Cit's the higher K rate, um, and then some of the like advanced analytics of like FIP and X ERA, which is for those that aren't super nerdy, those are basically the the stats of like true to a pitcher's outcomes, like regardless of having a defense, um, and but it also takes into account some of the contact that they give up.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: So again, I don't think Cease is going to win it, but he has put up a really incredible year, and it seems like every night it seems like it's almost double-digit K's.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: Um, so thought I'd give some some cease love.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: I think that's fair.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: And the other advantage that he does have working for him over Schlitler is is innings pitched.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Not that that always is like the make or break factor, I do think it matters a lot of times the way voters vote.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: I think I was trying to pull it up right now.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: I think he's got like 25 innings, so there's there's no way Cam's gonna catch him at this point.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, but that being said, Cam, the like being a Yankees fan, I also kind of see the fact that um whenever you have like a real ace, you have a guy that comes in and stops a losing streak, and Cam has been good for that all year.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: Um the other thing, the other reason that I feel like he will win the Cy Young is really just the fact that this is his first year as a full-time starter, and this is what we got.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: So best ERA in the American League, second best whip in all of baseball, um, behind who I think we both will predict will win the NL Cy Young, and um the second most inning pitch, second most inning pitched in the American League, um, besides Cease and Michael Waka, who were tied for first.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: So um I I definitely think it's it's closer than what the odds say it is right now.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Um, but ultimately I do think it's Cam's award to win.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: If game seven of the World Series and the Yankees are in it, do you want Cam or do you want Garrett out there?
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, I definitely want Cam out on the mound for sure.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: I I think he's got the better stuff right now.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: The reason that most people would probably say Garrett is because he's so much more intelligent and he just knows what's up.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: I I would want Cam out there in a in a game seven just because I think he's got some of that like dog in him.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: Like he's from Boston in that wildcard series last year where he was like talking shit to people in the in the crowd.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Like I you can't you can't beat that if you're like a stud ace pitcher.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: So um the NL side, much less exciting.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, I think I looked at the odds this morning just to see what they were.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: And Jacob, Jacob Mitsurawski is minus 14,000 on the NL Cy Young odds.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: He would you have to put$14,000 down to win a hundred dollars.
- 17:09unknown: Yeah.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: $100.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: Uh, he has the best whip in baseball, uh, as I just mentioned, the lowest average against in all of baseball, which is I feel like this is worth noting, 0.155.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: The next closest is 2.19.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: Um, and despite nearly 40 innings less pitched in the NL than the leader, which is Sandy Alcantara, he leads the NL in K's.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: So we both put Mizerowski.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Is there anything else you would like to say about him?
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh it's also just the electricity of he's throwing 104 in the first innings.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: I know he got roughed up by Mike Cubs's last start, but like that, I think that's his worst start of the year, and he gave up five.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: Um Chris, he's the best pitcher of baseball.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: I think the only like interesting thing would have been if Shohei pitched all year, and with how dominant Shohei looked, and obviously there's a lot of love for Shohei.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: Would they have gone MVP Cy Young for Shohei?
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: That would have been the only case.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: Because like Chris Sale's been great.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, I think he probably comes in second, but this is this is easily the biggest lock of any of these awards that you're gonna see.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Yep, totally agree.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: The AL rookie of the year.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: I do think that there's some arguments to be made here.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: We both put different guys on the notes.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: I I'll go first.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: I put Muneta Murakami, and this is partly narrative, also partly just performance.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: He leads all AL rookies in home runs um by just by one.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: Um, he also is part of the best turnaround, maybe ever.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: No team, I heard the stat the other day.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: No team that has ever lost a hundred games in back-to-back seasons has ever not only made the playoffs, has never won 70 games.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: So the fact that they are leading their division, which is not a very good division, and he is right in the heart of that lineup where he has been all year.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: He gets on base, he has 82 walks on the season.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Manetta Murakami would be my AL rookie of the year.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: He's definitely been, I think, one of the probably the surprise of the year for me.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: Uh, just because coming over, everyone was wondering like, would the power actually translate with how much swing and miss stuff he had in Japan?
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: Um, so I think that's a perfectly reasonable case.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: I went same division, Kevin McGonagall.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: I think he's been more consistent throughout the year.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: He leads the AL um in war for rookies.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: And then I think for him, it's just a matter of consistency.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: When you go look at any of the kind of the hitting stats for rookies, he's in the top 10 of all of them.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: Um, so it's not like there's not one big thing that sticks out like the home runs for Mirakami, but it for him, it's just a level of consistency that he's done throughout the year.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: And at times he's really carried that Tigers offense when they've been without some of their key pieces.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: Uh the NL Rookie of the Year kind of mirrors the NL Cy Young race.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Um, I thought this could have been a little bit closer at the start of the season with JJ Weatherholt making a case where he really started out pretty hot, but we both have the same guy here, and that is uh Cincinnati Red Sal Stewart, who not only uh has an 800 plus OPS every month of the season, he also leads all of baseball in RBIs, which is crazy for a team that's not gonna make the playoffs.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: And obviously, there are other more well-known guys, I would say, in that lineup.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Anything you want to add about Sal Stewart?
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: Uh it was kind of cool.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: We got to see him up close in per.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Well, we weren't very close, but we were in this, we were in the zip code uh of the stadium.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Uh, so that was fun.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: I thought I think the first month, Sal Stewart had a great first month, but I thought Weatherholt had kind of had a lock on it.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: Um, Weatherholt's probably the best second defensive second baseman in baseball.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: And so you could try to make an argument there, but the bat's just kind of fallen off.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, I know the Reds aren't any good, but the Cardinals have really kind of hit the skids here in the the last you know month, two months of the get uh the year.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so yeah, it feels like this is Sal Stewart, and again, I don't know that there's a close second.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: I'll be curious with both this AL Cy Young, NL Cy Young, and rookie of the year here, if it's unanimous or not, is really the kind of the only thing I'm curious about.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: Well, let's get into the MVP.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: So this is kind of what you were referring to earlier.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: I assume with the just making the contrarian argument.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: I I'll let you go first because your guys most likely gonna win, but so I'll let you go first.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: Uh again, this is another uh I can't remember what the betting.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Odds were, and I don't know if you have them up, but this was another one where it was you're putting tens of thousands of dollars down, I think, to try to win a hundred.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: He's around negative twenty thousand.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, and that's Jordan Alvarez.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: And really, you can summarize it very simply.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: No one's won the triple count since 2012, which was Mickey.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, and right now he is technically leading in all three.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Now I know Chandler Sampson's been coming up on uh from an average standpoint.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: The other Ray, Cameron Arrows, tied with him in home runs.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: So he might not get there, but even if you get two out of the three, uh I you know that's an MVP caliber season.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: The crutch with him is always uh, you know, he doesn't really play defense.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: I know he he's played a little bit of like left field, I think, some this year.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: And then also just despite the season he's having, that the Astros are just having a down season.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it's clearly not a Jordon Alvarez problem.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, that this is kind of like some of those Mike Trout MVP years where it's like baseball truly is it's the ultimate team sport, and you can only do so much, and so uh it's Jordons to lose for sure.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: Um it's boring.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: I wish I had some other argument to go out here and make, but it's what it is, you know.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna make an argument for a team that I would normally never do this for.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: In fact, I hate having to argue between a Ray and an Astro in general, but I'm gonna make an argument for Junior Camonero, and that's the fact that the Rays all season since the end of April have been able to hold off the Yankees, even though they've been two of the best five teams in baseball all year.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: Um, he's tied with Alvarez in home runs.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: They both have 38.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: Um, the Rays also have continued to, like I said, lead and pace the ALEs.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: Um, and at times their offense can get very stagnant.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: Um, they need a lot of guys on base for their offense to to be high functioning.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: Um, they are definitely a team like the Yankees in that division that leans on their pitching.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: So I think there's an argument to be made for Junior Camanero.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: I just don't know that more than one or two people is gonna make it.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: So um that that would be the only other guy that I could see getting votes, first place votes for the MVP in the AL.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: The NL MVP, I made an argument a few weeks ago um about who I think the NL MVP should be, and I don't think that it's a secret anymore.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: So I'll let you kind of take the reins here and start.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: Who is your NL MVP?
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: This is the best player of baseball.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: It's PCA.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Uh he just today, I know they lost, but it wasn't his fault.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: He had his 41st home run.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: He stole two stolen bases, so he's at, I think, 41 and 35 uh on the year.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: He's unquestionably the best defender in baseball.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: You throw in that he's second in the NL in home runs, he's hitting 280.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: His his walk rate is up like 10 to 12 percent, um, which the big bugaboo is him with always uh pitch selection.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: He runs the bases, he's a complete player, he's really put it together.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: Uh Shohei, if he's pitching, you know, the whole year, it's probably Shohei, but this has definitely been the MVP for PCA.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: So another one that we get to say we uh were in person and and got to see.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: So it's PCA all the way.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: It it is PCA.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: And as I made the argument, I don't I don't really need to rehash it that much, but as I made in my argument a few weeks ago, the the stats that he brings to the table on the defensive side of the field are so incomparable to anybody else that plays in the outfield or at shortstop in all of baseball.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: The only people that have a bigger effect on the game at all are catchers, and that's just because they're challenging more plays and things like they're involved in more interferences, things like that.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: That being said, he's also been one of the one or two best hitters in all of baseball, and at least in the NL.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: He leads the NL in OPS for the entire season.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Um, and I think he was like 30 points in OPS, yeah, 30, 36 points above James Wood in OPS, uh, about 50 points above Shohei in OPS.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: And to me, like when I look at just cut and dry, how good a hitter is, I look at OPS first.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and he's the best hitter in the NL, he's the best fielder in all of baseball.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: Even I made my argument was if a couple weeks ago, even if Shohei had not have stopped pitching, the the rarity doesn't make up for the greatness, you know.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: Like just because nobody pitches and hits doesn't make it necessarily better than what PCA has done.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: And I just don't think there's an argument that he can't win the MVP now.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: And I think with that, people always talk about Shohei being a two-way player, and it's true, he pitches and he hits, but he doesn't play defense, exactly.
- 27:13SPEAKER_01: PCA is also the ultimate two-way player, right?
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: The difference being offensively, they're pretty much tied in a lot of things.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: But if you look PCA is the best defender in baseball, Shohei is not the best pitcher in baseball, and there is a margin there between how how much better they are at the at the other side of the game that people never take into account, which as a Cubs fan, and obviously PCA being my favorite player on the team, like it has kind of always has rubbed me wrong.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: Uh so I I think that always gets lost in the argument, too, with the Shohei stuff.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, super that's a that's a great, that's a great final touch on that.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: Um, but ultimately I feel like we see a lot of these the same way.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: So it's really just a matter of will anything really I mean it's unlikely with some of these races, but if anybody really puts on an incredible last three weeks and is able to steal an award, maybe the AL rookie of the year, um, that would really be the most in in question I could see.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: Or maybe the AL Cy Young for that matter, too.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: So I think it's time that we get into a little week one of college football.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: While uh Florida State is currently losing at the at the time of this recording to Southern Methodists.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: So I think the first place we got to start here in week one, it just we'd be doing a disservice if we didn't at least lead off with this is Michigan and Western Michigan.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, I thought you were gonna start with Iowa, northern Illinois, but by mistake.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: My mistake a little bit further down the rundown.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: Uh Michigan and Western Michigan.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: So the obvious controversy here uh with the second that was added back onto the clock.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: I think we were both watching this live as it happened, and I turned the game off.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: I thought it was I thought it was over, and then I got a notification that they won the game, and I was beyond confused.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: I went back, understood what the replay said, still didn't make any sense to me.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: What were I mean, is this something that you're still thinking about, or is this just it is what it is?
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: Sorry, Western Michigan.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I had turned the game off.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: I didn't know they had won until you texted me and you're like, Michigan won.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: And I was like, What is he talking about?
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: Uh admittedly, I did not watch most of this game.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: Um live, I definitely thought there was no time on the clock.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: The replay clearly shows there's no time on the clock.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: I did see the Big Ten released uh their replay footage.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: And what's weird is on the replay footage there actually is very clearly one second left.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: Now, what's weird about that is they can't, I haven't seen anything that shows like where the difference is between what their replay had versus what was on NBC and what appeared to be in the stadium.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: And so like that's the fishy part of all of this, is it doesn't make sense.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: Regardless, um you still had uh Hail Mary to stop and you win the game, regardless if there's one second or not.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: Like you still had control of the outcome, and you did you just you didn't cover the one guy who could catch the ball.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: So, like that's the unfortunate part, but definitely Michigan got outplayed the entire game.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: Uh, very I was never very high on Bryce Underwood last year.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: People like talked about the strides he made at towards the end of the season.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: I never saw it.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: I also just in general, the Michigan system, the lack of true wide receivers on the outside.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: Like, I was never high on Michigan going into the year as so many of the others were.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I I agree.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: I I definitely think they were like more in the mid-tier of the Big Ten this year, uh, with with a chance to maybe creep above that.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: Really, my my takeaways from this one are it does feel like the game should have been over, like Michigan should have lost that game.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm I will be very curious with Michigan having a new coach uh in Kyle Whittingham, what this does, like the next three to five games.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: Like if you're still holding on to this, we'll find out pretty quick.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: That we're gonna talk about the Oklahoma game here shortly.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: We'll find out pretty quick this weekend, like how much they're thinking about that still.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: Um, but also just quick shout out to Lance Taylor, who's the head coach of Western Michigan.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: They won the Mac last year.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: They're not a bad team.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: They were like you said, they were toe to toe with Michigan physically for most of this game.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: Um, and he handled this with class, like he was cool on the field, he was cool after the after the game.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: Uh I I would have been fined if it was me and I was the coach of Western Michigan.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: They might not have been able to continue my employment the next day.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I I have a lot of respect for him holding it down that way.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: Um, but I think we can probably put this to bed.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: It's not gonna get changed.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: People can cry all they want.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: It's just it's one of those crazy things that I wish didn't happen, but seems like they do.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: A much better game and a much more entertaining game uh actually took place two nights ago as of this recording.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: That was Louisville and Ole Miss.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, an amazing back and forth game.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: Um, we saw Louisville actually come back from down 14 within the last five minutes, and that made Winidad Chambliss drive down the field with about a minute left and become the late hero.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: Uh, first immediate reactions to Louisville losing this game, um, and then we'll get into the old miss side of it.
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: For Louisville, if uh Keinholz, is that how you say his name was just average in the first half.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: I think they win this game, maybe even going away.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: He missed two or three wide open throws that could have been walk-in touchdowns.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: I thought you saw I I've always thought Jeff Braun was probably one of, if not the best, schematic uh play caller in college football that kind of goes unnoticed because he was at Purdue and now Louisville.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, and you saw him just absolutely dice a pretty like talented old miss offense.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: Um here's what I don't know.
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: How does Louisville respond to this?
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: It feels like every year Louisville comes in with like just a little bit of hype, they maybe get off to a good start, and then like they just lose a couple games they shouldn't.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: The ACC is so down this year, like they should be the second best team, they should be playing Miami for the ACC championship.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: It's just always with Louisville, it's a matter of consistency week to week.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I I was impressed by as that game went on, how I mean Jeff Brahm is one of the best offensive-minded coaches, definitely in the ACC, but really in the whole country.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: I was impressed with how the game went on, how they started finding some of their better receivers down the field, um, and clearly scheming things up with what they had seen in the first half.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: Uh, and the offense became much more explosive as the game went on.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, but we also saw that from the other side of the field in Trinidad.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, that guy is there's just no like killing that guy, like he will just get back up.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter like what happened on the drive before, if it was bad throws, punts, like negative plays, that dude slings it and he is a gamer.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: Like, he is really impressive to watch.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: Um, my my real question about Ole Miss coming away from this, they obviously went on a playoff run without Lane Kiffin last year.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: Is it possible that they could make the playoffs again with Trinidad, Pete Golding, and what we saw last night?
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: Here's my concern is that Louisville might be one of the better, more explosive offenses they play this year.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: But if you go and look at their schedule, they still have LSU, Florida, uh, Missouri, Texas, Auburn, Georgia, uh, and Oklahoma.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: That schedule is freaking brutal.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: And I don't know that if even if they go 9-3 on that schedule, if they're gonna get in to the 12-team playoff.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: And so I think just purely off schedule, they're in a really, really tough spot.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: That was a must-win.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: They got it, but that defense gave me some serious concerns in the second half.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, compared to what they're also going to see in the SEC.
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: So I I do have some concerns about Ole Miss long term.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: Uh well, not long term, but for the rest of this year.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: No, but a great game.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: Uh, impressive win, honestly, impressive comeback, even in the loss by Louisville.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: Um, speaking of failed comebacks, we have to talk about Auburn and Baylor next.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: And I get my first question about this game, I was thinking about this like right when the game ended.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: Regardless of the outcome, like if they were both zero and zero, who would you rather be the head coach of?
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: Like, having seen DJ Lagway and his career at Florida and that first game at Baylor, and then seeing the ducks that Byron Brown was quacking around the field in Atlanta, like, who would you feel more confident about, like as an offensive coordinator or as a head coach, if you had to pick one of the teams?
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: I'd be updating my resume for sure.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: Uh if I if I had to pick, I guess Baylor just because I'm in the Big 12, like purely for that reason, but that was abomination of quarterback play.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: It was so bad, it was almost unwatchable.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: This was I was listening to SVP and Stanford Steven.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: SVP was like, was it a good game or was it a close game?
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: Because they are very different, and it's so true.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: That's exactly right.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: Ugly football to watch.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: I was glad they were going for two just for the instance of like, just end this.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: Please don't that game had like seven overtimes, failed two-point conversions written all over it.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: So I'm glad they ended it when they did.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Bad quarterback play.
- 37:27SPEAKER_01: I was really honestly very disappointed in Auburn, uh, Auburn's offense just because you have goalish, you have they brought in some pieces from uh uh uh USF, like they should have had some continuity, they have the athletes, it just did not click at all.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: Uh so I'm I'm very seriously can like reconsidering where I think Auburn is going to be at the end of the year.
- 37:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I definitely share some of that in terms of I I I agree.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: Like, I I thought we were gonna see a more cohesive offensive unit for Auburn.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: It's at least right out of the gate.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: Like these are guys, it's not like this is all new, these are same plays, same coach, everything as what all their wide receivers, their run, you know, their quarterback, and three of their offensive linemen were doing last year.
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: So my my biggest takeaway really was that I was more and out of everything that I saw from this game, is that I was impressed with Baylor's defense.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: Um, I thought their defensive line like actually played pretty well.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: And for a guy like David Randa, who is I felt like been on the hot seat for like three straight seasons, that was good effort.
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: Like in a neutral site game that was pretty ugly and things weren't going very well.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: Like, I I was impressed by their defense, but ultimately I don't think either of these teams are contenders for their conference or the playoffs.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: So we can move along to two tiger teams that matched up with each other in two Death Valleys, and that was LSU and Clemson.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: One of these teams got the memo to show up, the other one doesn't use the portal, so I'll leave you to figure out which was which.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: Um, and obviously we're talking about LSU and Clemson, which was the center of the college football universe.
- 39:18SPEAKER_00: They hosted College Game Day on Saturday, and they put on one hell of a beatdown.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, there was not, I thought LSU was gonna run away with this game.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: There was not one world where I thought that they were gonna score 50 points on them.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: What if you're a Clemson fan, what what are you feeling?
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: You have it's Clemson, South Carolina.
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna give you some news flash.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: There ain't shit to do.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: So like this is what you live for is college football.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: Now you're just praying that it's baseball season.
- 39:57SPEAKER_01: Like best of luck to you.
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: I like this you got embarrassed, and there's no coming back from this.
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: No, like I don't care.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: I know they're in the ACC, and the ACC's pretty bad this year.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: It doesn't matter.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it doesn't matter.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: I there's no way they go 11 and 1.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: Nope.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: I think the only like takeaway from this game is if they go like 6-6, is Dabo done?
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: He still has a few years left on his deal and he makes a lot of money.
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: Um again, it's Clemson.
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: You're driven by football.
- 40:33SPEAKER_01: So like, is this what you want for the remainder of how however long Dabo's here?
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: My biggest takeaway when this game ended was if it if it didn't happen last year, this was the official ending of any kind of Clemson being a serious contender while Dabo is their head coach.
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: They were on the biggest national stage that they've been on in two years, and they got floored from the get-go, and they scored first.
- 41:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like they they got floored.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: There was no contest for 80% of this game.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: And between I mean, between like all the hoopla about their quarterback controversy, between Tate Reynolds, who was a three-star recruit, and Chris Vizina, who was a red shirt senior, who has never started a game, I I think that just tells you where they're at as a program.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: Like they didn't have like a real option to turn to that was gonna elevate this team between you know, basically a high school backup and a guy that's been a college backup.
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: So I I don't really even have a lot of takeaways for LSU because like it felt hard to judge so much of that game.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: But I I mean I I was impressed by their weapons, their offense clearly, and Lane Kippen for all the other crap you have to deal with with him, he knows how to coach offense and he knows how to get guys in space running down the field, and that works in college football.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: It does.
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: And to me, it gives me even more respect for someone like Nick Saban, who is like, Look, I could still do this, but I don't, it's not gonna be my way.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: And so instead of like adapting, I'm just gonna get out now.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: Dabo clearly is just not going to adapt.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: This is his program, this is how he wants to run it, and these are the results he's going to continue to get if you're not gonna use the portal, if you're gonna clearly just try to go through the high school route and only take our kind of guys, like it's just college football is the number one sport where you have to be able to adapt, and Dabo refuses to do it, and so I just I don't see this working for however long Dabbo's around.
- 42:53SPEAKER_00: Totally agree.
- 42:54SPEAKER_00: And yeah, based off this, if if they really come out flat, I I think they play an FCS team next week, but if they really come out flat in their first ACC game, I don't think it's out of the question that they let him go.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: Um, all right.
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: Anything else on LSU Clemson?
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: It's just I I agree with like I don't really know how to judge LSU.
- 43:15SPEAKER_01: I was trying to think like, do I think any more of LSU, or is it just that I think significantly less of Clemson?
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it was just such a poor performance by Clemson and like almost shocking how bad it was.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that I still don't feel like I have a great feel for LSU, other than we know it's Lane.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: You know it's the weapons, Levitt's a good quarterback, like they're gonna put up points.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: It's just a matter of with Lane when it comes to the big games, are they are they going to show up and actually be able to win them?
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: So I don't know how I feel yet about LSU.
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: One of the underrated, I don't even know if it was underrated, unexpected for sure stories of the first week was actually on the first Thursday game that we got in UMass and Ruckers.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: UMass, for those that don't know, did not win a game last year.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: They also lost their last five games the season before, but that didn't stop Pop William Watson from going 19 of 22 with a buck 97 and three touchdowns.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: And they got the win on the road at a Big Ten school.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: Does this do you have any takeaway about UMass about this?
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: Or is this all Rutgers should be banished out of the Big Ten?
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: Rutgers should be banished from the Big Ten everywhere.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: They should go to the Mac.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, because that's where they belong.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: Uh the Rutgers quarterback, Lanargan, should never be allowed to start another football game.
- 44:44SPEAKER_01: Uh, that dude, he was like when you play a football game on the online and there's lag, and you like hit a button, and then like three seconds later, it's like going the other way.
- 44:56SPEAKER_01: Like every ball was behind a receiver, it was three seconds too late.
- 45:00SPEAKER_01: I I think he threw an interception or two, and he probably could have thrown five or six if you just catches the ball.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I think even more alarming was the Rutgers defense.
- 45:10SPEAKER_01: Like, usually they can be a little bit salty on defense, they couldn't stop anything.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: Uh, this is this is it's Rutgers is one of the hardest jobs in America.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: Like, I I want to like no one has won there outside of Shiano.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: I think he's done like an admirable job, but this might be one of those things of like, is this chick just kind of over?
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: Like the tough guy get in your face.
- 45:34SPEAKER_01: Like, is that if they go like two and ten, are they looking for a new coach?
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: Because this is that's a disastrous way to start.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: It's even more damning.
- 45:43SPEAKER_00: We don't need to touch on this game too much longer, but it's even more damning to me that the guy that beat him was his old defensive coordinator.
- 45:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, like like may like that's always the sign to me, like when things might be passing you by, when talent is leaving the building, and then they come back and show you what's up, and that's exactly what UMass did.
- 46:06SPEAKER_00: And I I just gotta give a quick shout out to them.
- 46:09SPEAKER_00: Like, that that's awesome.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: Like, they didn't win a game last year, and they looked good for large stretches of that game.
- 46:16SPEAKER_00: Um, but anything else you want to say here?
- 46:19SPEAKER_00: Please leave the Big Ten.
- 46:22SPEAKER_00: Um uh a team that will not be in the Big Ten because they are gonna run away with the ACC this year, that is Miami.
- 46:30SPEAKER_00: They had had their first game on the road all the way across the country uh against an ACC opponent in Stanford, and even with that, time difference, time zone change, road game, conference game, their two Heisman performance or contenders, I should say, Darien Minsa and Malachi Tony dominated it.
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: Malachi Tony had 12 catches for 234 yards and three touchdowns.
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: Any major takeaways here for Miami, or was this just Miami beating up on some bad ACC team?
- 47:05SPEAKER_01: Uh, the Stanford secondary has had better nights.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: I don't think any of them probably got much sleep, if I had to guess.
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: They were Tony.
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: There were so many plays where there is no one within like 15 yards of him.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: It was like, oh dear God.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: Uh, I actually thought Stanford's offense was a little bit better than I would have thought.
- 47:24SPEAKER_01: Watching, I think is is it Warren, their quarterback?
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, watching him last year.
- 47:29SPEAKER_01: It was I was like, this is not a power forward like quarterback, not even close.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: I actually thought he played pretty decent um against Miami.
- 47:36SPEAKER_01: It was just purely Miami's just so much better than everyone in the ACC, and it just showed it.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: I think again with Miami, they have a little bit of that.
- 47:46SPEAKER_01: Is Crystal Ball gonna crystal ball or not?
- 47:48SPEAKER_01: You know, not call timeouts late or mismanage the game like we've seen in the past.
- 47:53SPEAKER_01: If Miami doesn't win the ACC this year, they should get like a three-year ban from playing the sport because they are so much better than everybody else.
- 48:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they they really are the the class of that conference, and I think this is like a perfect example of that because while Stanford's not good, they're probably one of the bottom three or four teams in that conference.
- 48:16SPEAKER_00: I mean, they still went on the road across the entire country and absolutely housed them in their building on the opening game.
- 48:24SPEAKER_00: You know, to me, that that still counts for something, you know.
- 48:28SPEAKER_00: And and I do think that my biggest fear with Miami this year, if I was a Miami fan, would be that they show up sleepwalking too many times.
- 48:38SPEAKER_00: Because I think with that conference and their resume that they will have, if they don't beat Notre Dame, they will not have the opportunity to lose another game besides that.
- 48:49SPEAKER_00: And if they show up real tired to like a morning kick at Boston College, and all of a sudden they're you know down 16 to 10 and they lose, like I don't I don't know how the voters would do it.
- 49:01SPEAKER_00: That we saw what they did to them last year, or to Notre Dame last year, I mean.
- 49:05SPEAKER_00: So who knows?
- 49:07SPEAKER_00: Who knows?
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: They kind of remind me of like Texas Tech from last year of like you'll probably run through your season just fine, but when you get to the playoffs and you haven't played a true like playoff type contender, you is that where it shows itself?
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: Um, so I'll be curious to to see that.
- 49:26SPEAKER_01: But I agree it for Miami, it's all about it's the consistency.
- 49:30SPEAKER_01: And can you bring your own energy every Saturday, whether you're at home in front of like 10,000 fans or going on the road to some of the smaller ACC schools, right?
- 49:40SPEAKER_00: Uh, another uh West Coast game that I want to touch on is Oregon and Boise State.
- 49:46SPEAKER_00: This was one of the best games all day Saturday.
- 49:49SPEAKER_00: Um, Jeremiah McClellan, the former Alabama receiver years ago, uh actually had one of the best days all day for the ducks.
- 49:58SPEAKER_00: He had 150 yards and a touchdown in the second half.
- 50:02SPEAKER_00: Um, my my thoughts, I I guess I'll let you go first.
- 50:06SPEAKER_00: Were are you concerned at all about Oregon from this?
- 50:09SPEAKER_00: Or I mean to me, to me, my I'll I'll just say my my first thought is that if any team is gonna do this and me not be worried, it's Boise State.
- 50:20SPEAKER_00: Like they've been in these moments before.
- 50:22SPEAKER_00: So, what what was your takeaway?
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: I just have concerns about Oregon's offensive line, they weren't moving Boise the way that I thought they should have.
- 50:30SPEAKER_01: And really, for that, it's are they going to be able to move guys in the Big Ten well enough to take a little bit of pressure off Dante Moore?
- 50:38SPEAKER_01: And then with Dante Moore, the talent is unquestionable.
- 50:41SPEAKER_01: I think he even had a career day against Boise.
- 50:44SPEAKER_01: I just always he's so nonchalant that I always worry about when they get down and they need him to make a play.
- 50:50SPEAKER_01: Like, is he the guy who's gonna get in the huddle and be like, all right, like let's go?
- 50:54SPEAKER_01: We got this, get on my bat.
- 50:56SPEAKER_01: Like, I just worry about those type of quarterbacks, and I know it's a body language thing, and I probably shouldn't pay as much attention to it, but it's just something I always think about with Dante Moore.
- 51:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, my ultimate takeaway about this is that I don't really feel that concerned about Oregon as a team.
- 51:14SPEAKER_00: Um, in fact, I actually kind of liked the test that they got.
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: Um, for them not really to play that well, especially like you said, on the offensive line, they did not run the ball well at all.
- 51:27SPEAKER_00: Um and they still were clear, I mean, I think they outgame them two to one.
- 51:33SPEAKER_00: Um, they they were clearly the better team, but Boise is just a scrappy bunch that has been in a lot of these games.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: And as a program, they are not intimidated by logos.
- 51:44SPEAKER_00: So uh I I don't really feel that much differently about Oregon, other than the fact that I was shocked they didn't win by 14.
- 51:52SPEAKER_00: Um but ultimately I still feel like they're gonna be in the race, at least for the playoffs all year.
- 52:00SPEAKER_00: This doesn't really change a whole lot of that for me.
- 52:02SPEAKER_00: Um, similarly with Notre Dame and Wisconsin.
- 52:07SPEAKER_00: Um, that also took place uh on Monday or Sunday night, I should say.
- 52:11SPEAKER_00: Notre Dame got off to kind of a slow start.
- 52:14SPEAKER_00: Wisconsin made a few good plays on special teams.
- 52:17SPEAKER_00: Um, and honestly, Colton Joseph at the beginning of the game looked pretty good.
- 52:21SPEAKER_00: Uh his first game as a transfer from Old Dominion.
- 52:24SPEAKER_00: Any thoughts immediately about Wisconsin before we do the Notre Dame side of it?
- 52:31SPEAKER_01: Uh physically, I thought they looked pretty impressive.
- 52:34SPEAKER_01: Um, I didn't see like a physical mismatch uh between the two.
- 52:39SPEAKER_01: And so I, you know, I I think you raise maybe the expectation a little bit of what Wisconsin is.
- 52:46SPEAKER_01: Um quarterback play was definitely better than what they've had the past couple of years.
- 52:50SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: I just I still just I don't know what Luke Fickle wants Wisconsin's identity to be, and I feel like that's been the long like hardest part with this tenure is when he came in, he brought was it Lavongo uh or uh Philongo uh Phil Longo, Phil Longo, yeah, as his OC to be like the spread team, and then they kind of shied away from that.
- 53:14SPEAKER_01: And is it Grimes now as their OC?
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: Uh and so it's just I don't know exactly what their identity is, and at Wisconsin, it's kind of like Iowa.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: If you don't have an identity and recruit to it and build towards it year over year, that's where you get in trouble.
- 53:33SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, I I think physically they look much better than what they have the last couple of years.
- 53:39SPEAKER_01: It's just it is uh is he gonna run out of time because I think Wisconsin fans are fed up with the results.
- 53:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I to me, at least like you said, across the offensive line and at quarterback, they looked much improved from not only last year, but probably all of Luke Fickle's tenure, really.
- 53:59SPEAKER_00: Uh the the biggest drawback, well, aside from the fact that Notre Dame is just way better than them, the biggest drawback that they have as a team that I could see just from this game is they have no real running backs and no real receivers anywhere on this team.
- 54:16SPEAKER_00: And when pretty much every team that they will play all season is better than them, that is a hard world to live in.
- 54:24SPEAKER_00: You don't you don't have anybody that's gonna win the matchup or just make a crazy play, they have to really like methodically go down the field all the time.
- 54:34SPEAKER_00: That's not a good recipe for success.
- 54:37SPEAKER_00: So that that was really my biggest takeaway for Wisconsin on the Notre Dame side.
- 54:42SPEAKER_00: Even while their offense was kind of puttering a bit in the first half, that defense is so good.
- 54:48SPEAKER_00: Leonard Moore has a real argument to be a top, certainly a top uh first round pick, but really like a top 10 pick if he stays healthy this year at corner for Notre Dame.
- 55:00SPEAKER_00: Um, they have a few other guys on their defensive front that I thought were impressive, but Williams at running back, I also thought he was it's like that they just produce running backs now all of a sudden.
- 55:12SPEAKER_00: So, any any major takeaways for Notre Dame's offense or their defense, I guess the first half was coaching malpractice.
- 55:19SPEAKER_01: Their game plan was so awful.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: They thought they could just run bland stuff and just do whatever they want, which was so stupid.
- 55:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they spent this whole offseason crying about we were playing better than anybody else in the country, we got left, and then you come out, and that's what your first, you know uh first time to prove yourself to the national audience, and that's what you put out there.
- 55:43SPEAKER_01: It was bland, it was uninspiring.
- 55:46SPEAKER_01: It looked like they were nervous, like they were feeling the pressure of like everyone's picking us to be undefeated and be a national championship contender.
- 55:56SPEAKER_01: So I I thought in the first half, Fickle just whooped uh Freeman's ass uh from a coaching perspective.
- 56:03SPEAKER_01: To Freeman's credit, in the second half, he clearly got them settled down.
- 56:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they came out much more aggressive.
- 56:09SPEAKER_01: They actually allowed CJ Carr to like go make plays for them.
- 56:13SPEAKER_01: Um, I still, for me, with Notre Dame, especially on offense, it's always it feels like since like the Brady Quinn era of like, do they have the wide receivers on the outside to like go win those one-on-one matchups?
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: Like, Faison's a really nice slot guy.
- 56:32SPEAKER_01: I didn't see anybody else out there that I was blown away by, yeah, against some of the elite defenses.
- 56:38SPEAKER_01: I'm like, that guy can go get open.
- 56:41SPEAKER_00: Um somehow I feel like Jaden Greathouse has been there for like seven years.
- 56:45SPEAKER_01: Oh, I know.
- 56:46SPEAKER_01: And he always gets brought up as like one of these the next guy, and it's like, sure.
- 56:52SPEAKER_01: He can't he can't be, he's been there too long.
- 56:54SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 56:55SPEAKER_01: He's like Perry Ellis.
- 56:57SPEAKER_01: Uh so you know, I I want to see more from that receiver.
- 57:03SPEAKER_01: The problem with Notre Dame is they've got a little bit of the Miami thing of like the schedule's just not going to test them in the way that they're going to need to be tested until we get to the playoffs, and then it's you know, it's one and done.
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: So I'll be very curious to see kind of how they handle the rest of the year.
- 57:21SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, they in the first half, they also blew a couple coverages, allowed guys to run by them.
- 57:27SPEAKER_01: So they have some uh if you're a Notre Dame coach, you probably loved it.
- 57:32SPEAKER_01: You came out, you got a big win, uh, but you also have a ton of tape to teach.
- 57:38SPEAKER_01: Um, so I don't worry about Notre Dame at all.
- 57:41SPEAKER_01: I think they're one of the five best teams in the country.
- 57:43SPEAKER_01: I'm just I don't know if they're four, three, two, or one, you know.
- 57:49SPEAKER_00: Meanwhile, Florida State is getting stuffed on fourth down uh by SMU.
- 57:55SPEAKER_00: Let's stick with two more games out on the West Coast.
- 57:59SPEAKER_00: Um, another one that took place Sunday afternoon.
- 58:02SPEAKER_00: This was the Apple Cup, Washington State in Washington.
- 58:06SPEAKER_00: Washington came into this game, I believe, that when the line closed, they were 22-point favorites, and Washington barely scored 22 points in the game.
- 58:15SPEAKER_00: Uh, pretty rough game on offense for Jed Fish and uh Demon Williams.
- 58:21SPEAKER_00: He actually led the team with 61 rushing yards in this game.
- 58:26SPEAKER_00: Were you uh in the belief that this quarterback coach combination was a playoff caliber team, or not so much?
- 58:33SPEAKER_01: I thought that Washington had a chance to be kind of that surprise Big Ten team.
- 58:38SPEAKER_01: Um and I came away very alarmed.
- 58:42SPEAKER_01: Um I won their offensive line, could not push Washington State around at all.
- 58:49SPEAKER_01: No uh the broadcast mentioned that the running back room was pretty dinged up.
- 58:53SPEAKER_01: They had another guy get hurt in the middle of the game, they couldn't run the ball, and then Demon Williams, you could tell, was feeling all the pressure of that, and he kept trying to make plays, and he was just off.
- 59:05SPEAKER_01: He's normally a pretty accurate thrower, uh, but he did not have a good game at all.
- 59:12SPEAKER_01: But as far as like as high as I was on Washington, and I thought their offense was gonna be great, that defense is nasty.
- 59:21SPEAKER_01: That defense is fast, they're long as hell, they're really athletic.
- 59:26SPEAKER_01: That defense is if they could keep playing like that, and I know Washington State's not, you know, we've both have been a fan of a Kirby Moore offense, and it's not the most exciting times in the world, right?
- 59:37SPEAKER_01: Um, but it was still very impressive what they were doing uh down to down.
- 59:43SPEAKER_01: Um and they have some real dudes, and really Washington State.
- 59:46SPEAKER_01: I think if if it wasn't for some of the Washington penalties, I think Washington had like 10 or 11 penalties, three or four personal fouls that extended drives, Wazoo might not have even scored.
- 59:56SPEAKER_01: So I was very impressed with the Washington defense.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: And I trust Jed Fish is one of the I think an underrated coaches, uh, just because he keeps hopping around, but he knows how to coach football.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: And so I don't necessarily like have long-term concern about the Washington offense.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't know that I share the belief in their ceiling just because kind of kind of similar to um kind kind of similar to uh who are we talking about earlier?
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_00: Maybe Michigan with their skill players.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_00: Um, but I just like don't feel like Washington has the skill players to beat like Ohio State or I mean honestly, even like some of the transfers Matt Campbell brought from Iowa State to Penn State, like I don't know if they're necessarily on that level.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_00: I don't think they're with Oregon, but I do think that I expected to see more from this offense than I did in this game.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_00: And I don't I don't want to like totally like disparage Washington State's defense because quite frankly, I don't know that much about them.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_00: Um, but I do know that, like you said, Washington's defense looked fantastic in this game.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_00: Um, so my my real takeaway from here is that if they don't improve, this team absolutely has no chance to make the playoffs on that we need to see more from this offense, we need to see more from that running game.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_00: Um, but ultimately they got the job done and beat a rival by double digits in the first week.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: So always a tough test to be put in that position.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_00: Um, and similarly, Cal and UCLA.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_00: This we talked about UMass and Rutgers being a black eye on the Big Ten.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_00: This was the opposite of that.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_00: The Big Ten put some whoop ass on a team that I thought was pretty good in Cal.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_00: Um, maybe one of the best two or three freshman quarterbacks in all the country last year.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_00: Jeron Kiawe Sagopulutele with 277 yards.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_00: Um uh or excuse me, UCLA ran for 277 yards on Cal and forced JKS to throw two interceptions.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_00: Um, Bob Chesney's guy, Wayne Knight, had three touchdowns.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_00: Um, Alex Wood, I believe, is his first name, the other running back UCLA has.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_00: He also had two touchdowns and like 140 yards.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_00: They were just physically mauling Cal.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_00: Um, what were your takeaways from either side on this, Cal or UCLA?
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think first and foremost, this is so stupid that these aren't same conference teams.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_01: This should be a conference game.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_01: This is so stupid, so dumb.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, but I I think it's just once again, Bob Chesney is just an outstanding football coach.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_01: And I think what you've seen from where they were under Chip to now is just the physicality.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_01: They're they look so they actually look like a Big Ten or even an old school Pac-12 team that are you know talent-wise this first year, they're not really gonna be any type of threat in the Big Ten.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_01: But this is a building block year, and this and you go out and make a statement like this.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_01: This feels like a game that UCLA the past seven, ten years, shit, most of our lifetime.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_01: This feels like a game that they crap down their leg and they don't win, and it just kind of sets up the rest of the season for like mediocre.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_01: So I think this is kind of like uh a morale boost, big positive win, and hopefully like get people back excited about West Coast football.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_00: Totally agree.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_00: I I thought this game actually really meant a lot for both of these teams, like and what they were trying to do this year.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_00: Um, I I definitely think that it's a hard thing to overcome for Cal.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_00: Um, they were trying to be in the dark horse to win the ACC potentially, and this is definitely a setback, at least in terms of confidence, the fact that they got pushed around so bad.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_00: Um, a few of the big, you know, high-ranked teams, you know, blue bloods around the the nation, Ohio State, Penn State, Texas, um, Indiana, USC, Georgia, and Florida, they all won in pretty dominant blowouts.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_00: Um, all these ranked teams, any of these like really stand out to you or all just kind of you know, hum, hum, hum, hum, and they did what they were supposed to do.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_01: The two that I kind of want to highlight are one is Penn State, the the Penn State Cyclones.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, Campbell brought in all those transfers.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, they looked so good on defense.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_01: That defense was whooping the crap out of a Marshall team.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_01: I know Marshall's lost a lot in the portal the last couple of years, but that's a really good statement win, especially when you consider their Penn State schedule is so soft.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, their hardest game is probably at Washington or at Michigan.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, both two teams that we've already talked about, kind of how disappointing their week ones were.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_01: Um, so I think there's a real path there for Penn State if they can stay healthy to be actual playoff contenders.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_01: Um now I I don't think they're good enough to like go in a game or anything in the playoff, but I think they have a path to get there.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_01: And then the other one that kind of stuck out was the Indiana defense.
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_01: I thought Indiana offensively, it didn't look like they missed a beat at all.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_01: Hoover's gonna have a great year.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_01: The receivers, Marsh, uh, and then uh what's the white dude's name?
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_01: Uh Decker.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_01: Or Becker, I mean Becker, yeah.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_01: They're unbelievable.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_01: They still got the physicality, they can run the ball.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_01: Their defense, though, was kind of just getting nickel and dimed the whole game.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_01: Um and it the secondary, especially, I just didn't feel like they didn't have what they had last year.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_01: So I'll be I'll be curious.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_01: I'm sure Sig, this was another one where I'm sure he loved this of like not playing perfect.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_01: We'll get to back to tape, coach them up.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_01: Um I fully anticipate that they'll improve throughout the year, but just kind of that first week performance left me a little bit of like, is there some vulnerability there from an Indiana's defense perspective?
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_00: No, those definitely, and you you mentioned Marshall having some turnover in the portal.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_00: North Texas, that's a team that's had some turnover in the portal, and even they were moving the ball a little bit, which was concerning.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_00: Um, I think out of all those, one of the teams that I I want to highlight is Georgia, honestly.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_00: And I'm saying this as a Florida Gator and a Missoula fan.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_00: Um, they were incredibly dominant.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_01: Um, I didn't watch any of that game.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_00: They I mean, within eight minutes of game time, it was 28 to nothing, and it was just so physically dominant.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_00: Uh, that I I I was just really impressed by their defense um and by their offensive line.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_00: I think that they are going to be I I I I based on what I saw from week one, they are my SEC favorite over Texas.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_00: Um they just look so physically strong.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_00: Um, I I'm gonna give a few shout-outs to some performances before we dive into week two, but any other games that you want to highlight from week one or anything that stood out?
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_00: Your Iowa Hawkeyes, they have a quarterback.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_01: Well, we have two.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_01: They played two the whole game.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_01: Uh, I was so like purely from an Iowa lens, uh, they do like their they call it their kids' day, which is basically like their uh their scrimmage where they play each other.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_01: And Hank Brown was awful, like so bad.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_01: Like, look, think like Deacon Hill, some of these uh Kate McNamara bad.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_01: And then Jeremy Hatsinki was like he threw like five touchdowns.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_01: I think he threw like three incompletions, like torched the defense.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_01: So everybody was like, please don't play Hank Brown, please don't play Hank Brown.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_01: So of course Kirk Ferris was like, Yeah, we're gonna start Hank Brown.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_01: But then it turns out like Hank Brown was definitely definitively the better quarterback of the two.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_01: Sounds like I think for the next couple of weeks they're still gonna do kind of a rotation, they're very opposite.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_01: Hank Brown's kind of that like prototypical pro, big quarterback, under center.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_01: Hank Haksinky, they kind of compared to like a poor man's Baker Mayfield, like he's smaller, gonna run around, uh, never seen a uh pass that he doesn't think he can make.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_01: So but I was encouraged by the uh honestly, I in in the the state of Iowa, our biggest concern was the defense, which is weird to say for being a Hawkeye fan, just because they've lost so much and they're so young this year, uh, and they just pummeled a very poor uh northern Illinois team.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_01: So it was exciting.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_01: We set up Scihawk next week.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_01: It's a night game at Kenneck, gonna be a lot of fun.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_00: A northern Illinois team, who I believe, if I'm not incorrect, they are in the Mountain West, right?
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_01: They are, they're a Mountain West team.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_00: Hey, that is a that's a tough, yeah.
- 1:09:04SPEAKER_00: They are.
- 1:09:04SPEAKER_00: I just had to make sure that that's a tough first game as new members of the Mountain West to lose a non-con in the Big Ten.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_00: That's only they got bad a couple hours away from you.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_00: Weird situation.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_00: Conference realignment is so weird, but uh a few notable performances before we get into week two.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_00: I just want to give a quick shout out to Duke running back Nathan Shepard.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_00: He had 227 yards and a touchdown and a pretty big win in a close game against Tulane for Duke.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_00: Uh Rutgers, albeit in a loss.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_00: KJ Duff also set a school record with three touchdowns in one game.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_00: Also chipped in 196 yards.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_00: Again, they did lose to UMass, but he got his.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_00: Uh, I have to give a shout out to two of my guys, Austin Simmons.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_00: I know they played Arkansas Pine Bluff, but he was making some pretty strong throws.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_00: And he was 17 of 19, and he hadn't started a game since week two of last season.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_00: Um, four touchdowns in the first half.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_00: Thought he looked more than more than adequate.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_00: Um, and the Gators running back, Jaden Ball, he scored three touchdowns in about six minutes of game time against a team that I don't think is that bad.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_00: Florida Atlantic was a middle of the pack American team last year.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_00: Um, and they just completely dominated them.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_00: Uh, two others that I want to give some love to Colorado Edge Lamont Lester had three sacks, including two in the fourth quarter against Georgia Tech.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_00: And then former Miami, Ohio Redhawks.
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_00: Speak about some Mac Love.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_00: Javon Tracy, who is now at the University of Minnesota, had two punt returns for touchdowns in their opening game win against Eastern Illinois.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_00: Well, that means we are off of week one.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_00: We are on to week two, which means it is time to tail the tailgate.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_00: We are going to go through eight of the biggest games from this week and give you our best tail the tailgate picks.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_00: The biggest game of this week, without a doubt, is Texas and Ohio State.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_00: That is where college game day will be.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_00: Texas opens up as a one and a half point favorite for this Saturday night clash.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 48 and a half.
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_00: What is your take?
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna take Ohio State money line with very little confidence.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_01: I think last year we saw two very young quarterbacks that were like going against very good defenses that the coaches had almost zero trust in.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_01: I think we see almost a complete flip of that game.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_01: I think it's gonna be wide open, like stud athletes making stud plays.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_01: I think it's uh it comes down to can Ohio State get enough out of the run game to put the game away.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_01: I think they do.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_01: I I slightly favor Ryan Day over uh Sark.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_01: And so I give Ohio State just a slight edge of a Jeremiah Smith big play or Juliet Sain maybe you know making some plays with his legs to get a couple key first downs and they win late.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_00: It's funny that you your opening was about how many points you think we're gonna get scored because I swear to you, I wrote down over as my pick, and I tossed and turned and looking at it, and I was like, I could see this somehow being like 24 to 20, and I'm just mad right away.
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_00: So I just went with Texas money line.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_00: I I think this is a very close game.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_00: I also think this is the complete opposite of last year, um, just from where Saiyan and Arch are in their careers.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_00: And my biggest reason for taking Texas, one, it's at home, it's in Daryl K.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_00: Royal, but the the other big reason is the connection that I already saw between Cam Coleman and Arch Manning, it that will be very hard for Ohio State to stop.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_00: I'm excited to see how that looks against a team like Ohio State.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_00: I just ultimately think the fact that this is a night game at home.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_00: I think there's gonna be a lot of points.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_00: I like Arch in that situation a little bit more than I think I like Julian.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_00: So if this was neutral site, I'd probably just go with the over, but I'm gonna take Texas on the money line.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_00: We also have a fierce rivalry.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_00: You saw my pick on here.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm gonna have to change my legal name after this before some of my friends hear this.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_00: But Mizzou takes on Kansas in the border war, one of the oldest rivalries in college football.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_00: Mizzou won a pretty storied, storied rivalry.
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_00: Hey, we if you didn't notice, we are hanging a national championship banner.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_00: We we are we are champions.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_00: Embarrassing.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_00: Mizzou and Kansas played a very crazy game last year.
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_00: Kansas jumped out, I think it was 20 to 7 in the first quarter, and then Mizzou really kind of ran away with the game in the fourth quarter, scoring 28 points late in the fourth quarter.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_00: This year, uh Mizzou is favored by six and a half.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_00: It is on the road in Lawrence, Kansas.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, the total is set at 49 and a half.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_00: Where do you see this game going?
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_01: So my in-laws are coming Friday, and we got my stepfather-in-law, is a huge Mizzou grad, huge Mizzou fan.
- 1:14:32SPEAKER_01: My mother-in-law went to KU, big KU fan.
- 1:14:35SPEAKER_01: So I was joking.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_01: Was like, do I need to put you guys at separate levels of the house when this game's on?
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_02: What's going to happen here?
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, I have zero feel for this game.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_01: I have no idea.
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_01: Both teams played high school teams in their first game.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, I will say I thought the KU, I don't know if you watched any of that.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_01: The new stadium looked pretty freaking cool.
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_01: Um, so I'm excited to see that get a little bit more run.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_01: I I think I'd probably lean KU plus the points, just again, being at home.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_01: It feels like Mizzou's defense, whenever they struggle, it's against quarterbacks that can move.
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_01: Isaiah Marshall, uh, you know, his legs are really good.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_01: He ran for a bunch of yards against again a high school team, but he is someone that can make plays with his feet.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_01: So I I lean KU plus the points, but I have no real feel for either of these teams at this point.
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_00: Similar to the first game, I was very close to taking the over here.
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_00: Uh, but I also took Kansas plus the points.
- 1:15:36SPEAKER_00: This is really a situation where I just think it's too many points for a rivalry game on the road, where I could easily see Mizzou being up 14 late in this game, and Kansas doing some like weird score and go for two, or like just something to keep them within range.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_00: Um, and from that perspective, I'm also gonna take Kansas plus the six and a half.
- 1:15:57SPEAKER_00: Uh, Georgia Tech, who lost a pretty tough game to Colorado in their opener, they take on Braden Faison uh from the University of Tennessee, their freshman quarterback who was on fire in the first half on Saturday.
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_00: Tennessee comes on the road to Bobby Dodd Stadium.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_00: They are favored by 12.5, the over-under set at 55 and a half.
- 1:16:21SPEAKER_00: I smell a by low here, and it's on the Yellow Jackets.
- 1:16:27SPEAKER_00: 12 and a half at home for a night game feels like way too many disrespectful points on Brent Key's name.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_00: What do you think?
- 1:16:36SPEAKER_01: Everyone's gonna be betting on Tennessee.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_01: Georgia Tech lost to Coach Prime, they looked awful.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_01: The offensive line got no movement.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_01: You know, Brett Key.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_01: He probably has he has probably a zero voice today because he's just been screaming at that offensive line for like a week and a half now.
- 1:16:53SPEAKER_01: They're gonna come out.
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_01: SMU's about to have an 80, by the way.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, he's getting hawked.
- 1:16:58SPEAKER_01: Oh uh, they're gonna come out absolutely on fire.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_01: This will probably be their best game of the year in terms of the crowd, the atmosphere, the level of passion that they're gonna come out with.
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't be shocked at all if Georgia Tech wins this thing outright and kind of a big shocker.
- 1:17:19SPEAKER_00: I can also see the under being in play here.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_00: Um, just from the sense of how if Georgia Tech is going to be in the game, based on your and my logic, the under kind of has to also be in play as well.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_00: Um, but we're both on the Yellow Jackets.
- 1:17:35SPEAKER_00: So another SEC, a true SEC matchup.
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_00: Um, Alabama, after beating East Carolina this past weekend, uh, they traveled to Kentucky to take on the Kentucky Wildcats.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_00: They are favored by 10 and a half.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 48.5, and it's gonna be one of those beautiful, pristine Lexington 330 kickoffs, just beautiful weather there.
- 1:17:59SPEAKER_00: Um, I am on the Wildcats.
- 1:18:03SPEAKER_00: I just think that I like Will Stein.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_00: I think that Kenny Minchie is better than what most Kentucky quarterbacks have been recently, and ultimately, I still think that there's a lot of like working work in progress.
- 1:18:18SPEAKER_00: Like, don't pay attention to this.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_00: We're gonna win, but it's gonna be by six from Bama.
- 1:18:24SPEAKER_00: What's what's your what's your thoughts here?
- 1:18:26SPEAKER_01: I was impressed by Bama.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_01: I didn't know what to expect for them coming out against the ECU team, who again isn't great, but like that's a good first game.
- 1:18:34SPEAKER_01: Um gets like a competent team.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I thought Keelan Russell played pretty darn well.
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_01: The receivers were good.
- 1:18:41SPEAKER_01: Um, here's what concerns me Youngstown State, which is who Kentucky played, their quarterback went 23 for 35 for 243 yards.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_01: Three of their four first drives uh were 11 plays or longer.
- 1:18:55SPEAKER_01: If you're giving that up against a Youngstown State team who has maybe one-fifteenth of the athleticism and talent that Alabama has, I worry about how you're gonna be able to hold up against Alabama over 60 minutes.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_01: So I I personally am gonna lay the points with Bama.
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_01: Um, but this early in the season, I wouldn't be shocked if De Boer puts like the backup in for like the last quarter or something, and somehow Kentucky finds a way to kick in the back door.
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_01: But I I think Bama Bama comes out and and again kind of establishes a message to the SEC of like, hey, we are still Alabama and we're we're still here.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_00: So I'm on Kentucky.
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_00: Brandon is on Bama.
- 1:19:40SPEAKER_00: So four more games to go through here.
- 1:19:43SPEAKER_00: Uh probably the game that I am the most excited about this weekend, aside from Mizzou, Kansas, and that is Mississippi State in Minnesota.
- 1:19:52SPEAKER_00: Not the biggest blue blood draw of the games this weekend, but two of the it's hard.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's hard to find underrated quarterbacks in this year's quarterback class, but two of the most underrated quarterbacks in the country, uh, Drake Lindsey at Minnesota and Camario Taylor at Mississippi State, this game could get wild and it could get wild quick.
- 1:20:16SPEAKER_00: Um, I think that this will resemble Louisville Ole Miss in a lot of ways.
- 1:20:21SPEAKER_00: Um, and I think that Mississippi State, because of Camario Taylor and Fluff Bothwell, are going to win this game.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_01: What's your thoughts?
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_01: I have Minnesota here.
- 1:20:35SPEAKER_01: This just feels like a classic Minnesota game of like Mississippi State's gonna come in with all this hype on offense, and Minnesota's just gonna shut that shit down.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_01: It'll be like some of that dumb shit where like a guy will be fluff, will be in the open field and he'll just drop the ball and then kick it out of the end zone.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_01: Like they'll just do some of that weird Minnesota mojo.
- 1:20:55SPEAKER_01: Uh and I am a Big Ten homer, but not when it comes to Minnesota.
- 1:21:00SPEAKER_01: You know, my disdain for PJ Fleck and row the boat and all of it.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_01: But I am taking Minnesota.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_01: I do agree.
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_01: I think uh Lindsay is one of the more underrated quarterbacks in the Big Ten, if not the country.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I wouldn't be shocked at all if this is an ugly game and Minnesota just does enough at the end.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 1:21:20SPEAKER_00: I hope that's not the case because it will be on one of my TVs in large format.
- 1:21:25SPEAKER_00: So I hope that's not the case.
- 1:21:27SPEAKER_00: Uh hopefully, this is a premier Drake Lindsay game.
- 1:21:30SPEAKER_00: Um, staying in the Big Ten, a team that we've started our conversation about, that's the University of Michigan.
- 1:21:37SPEAKER_00: They've taken on Oklahoma.
- 1:21:39SPEAKER_00: Uh, Oklahoma comes in on the road.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_00: This line actually, I was debating on what to put on the dock because the line opened um Saturday night at one and a half.
- 1:21:50SPEAKER_00: And by the time the Michigan game ended, it was five and a half.
- 1:21:54SPEAKER_00: So pretty large road spread.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_00: The over-under set at 43 and a half.
- 1:22:00SPEAKER_00: And to me, I just think that there's gonna be a lot of Oklahoma has one of the best defenses in the country.
- 1:22:06SPEAKER_00: Michigan, I think, has one of the better 30 defenses in the country.
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_00: Uh, and I just think that there's gonna be a lot of weird things going on in this game because of what happened last week.
- 1:22:18SPEAKER_00: I'm taking the under 43 and a half.
- 1:22:21SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna take Michigan plus the points.
- 1:22:23SPEAKER_01: I would even take their money line too, just because this is this is college football.
- 1:22:28SPEAKER_01: You have the team that has all this hype that comes out and is just awful.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_01: I bet you 98% of the money in this game is going to be on Oklahoma, which is just means this is why they just keep building bigger casinos.
- 1:22:43SPEAKER_01: Is Michigan's gonna come out and win this game like 10 to nothing.
- 1:22:47SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be ugly, ugly football.
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_01: I love your underpick, but somehow, somehow, Michigan's gonna find a way to even win this damn game outright and just be like, screw y'all, y'all.
- 1:22:58SPEAKER_01: We're talking about Western Michigan.
- 1:22:59SPEAKER_01: We were talking about Oklahoma.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_01: We didn't put anything on tape last week because we knew we had it the whole time.
- 1:23:06SPEAKER_00: You know, yeah, I can so just hear the sound bites already of like Bryce Underwood yelling, like if they win by eight or more than one score, like put one second back on the club, put one second back.
- 1:23:18SPEAKER_01: He's gonna pull out the Gino of like they wrote me up, but I ain't right back yet.
- 1:23:23SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 1:23:23SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be pulling out all the sound bites, so I'm just gonna be exhausted.
- 1:23:28SPEAKER_00: Oh man.
- 1:23:30SPEAKER_00: We don't have I don't have time to get it.
- 1:23:32SPEAKER_00: That whole thing with him on Saturday night and Sunday was insane.
- 1:23:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, yeah.
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_00: So I'm on the under 43 and a half.
- 1:23:41SPEAKER_00: Brandon is on Michigan plus five and a half, a lot of points at home.
- 1:23:45SPEAKER_00: Um Iowa and Iowa State.
- 1:23:48SPEAKER_00: What's the what's the rival the Cyhawk?
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there we go.
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_00: The Sci Hawk rivalry.
- 1:23:53SPEAKER_00: Uh, and it's in Iowa in Ames this year.
- 1:23:57SPEAKER_00: Um, Iowa is favored on the road by 14 and a half points, while the over-under sits at just 40 and a half.
- 1:24:06SPEAKER_00: I'll I'll start and then I'll let you kind of clean it up.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_00: I'm on Iowa.
- 1:24:10SPEAKER_00: Um I I was somewhat impressed by Jalen Rayner last week for Iowa State.
- 1:24:17SPEAKER_00: I just don't think that they got the bodies to be able to contain Iowa's running game with Moulton, and I don't think they have the offensive line to hold up for 60 minutes.
- 1:24:28SPEAKER_00: I just think Iowa's better than them.
- 1:24:30SPEAKER_01: So this game's at Kinneck, by the way.
- 1:24:32SPEAKER_00: Um even better.
- 1:24:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it's a night game, um, which is one of the better places to be for college football Saturday.
- 1:24:40SPEAKER_01: Uh, I won't be there, unfortunately, or fortunately.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_01: I don't ever really want to be at an Iowa State game because it's the one game a year where like my heart rate is just at an unhealthy out probably cardiac arrest for most of this game.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm also going to take Iowa, which is also goes against everything I stand for.
- 1:24:58SPEAKER_01: Usually in this game, I always bet Iowa State, so that way, if you know we do lose, I have at least financial gain out of it.
- 1:25:05SPEAKER_01: So now I'll be double disappointed if something happens.
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_01: Iowa State I thought I think brings back like five total players from last year's roster.
- 1:25:13SPEAKER_01: It's something stupid, and one of them's their kicker.
- 1:25:16SPEAKER_01: Uh I think Jimmy Rogers, Jimmy Rogers also came out and in his initial like press conference or whatever, was like, fuck Iowa.
- 1:25:25SPEAKER_01: Uh so I'm assuming that's going to be played pretty much throughout the week in Iowa City.
- 1:25:31SPEAKER_01: Um, so they're gonna be hearing that over and over again.
- 1:25:34SPEAKER_01: Iowa State's beaten Iowa the last couple of years, so there's a lot of uh pent-up revenge coming for this.
- 1:25:41SPEAKER_01: I think the Hawks roll, I think this game's over by midway through the third quarter.
- 1:25:46SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 1:25:47SPEAKER_00: So uh one more game for us to pick, and that is Memphis and Boise State.
- 1:25:52SPEAKER_00: I debated on what the last game I was gonna put on our sheet was.
- 1:25:56SPEAKER_00: Felt like this was important though for the group of six.
- 1:25:59SPEAKER_00: Memphis is already 2-0.
- 1:26:01SPEAKER_00: Um, and they travel to Boise State, who we just talked about, put on a great performance in week one against Oregon.
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_00: Boise opens at home as a seven and a half point favorite, over under, set at 55 and a half.
- 1:26:16SPEAKER_00: I am a big Marcus Stokes fan.
- 1:26:18SPEAKER_00: This guy is really good.
- 1:26:20SPEAKER_00: Um, and Jalen Carter, their transfer running back, has been great in both of their games.
- 1:26:25SPEAKER_00: Um, they're obviously 2-0 because they played in week zero.
- 1:26:29SPEAKER_00: I am gonna take the points with Memphis, and I just I feel like I trust what they got going on.
- 1:26:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I really like this this game.
- 1:26:37SPEAKER_01: This is this game might be probably the more important than even maybe even Texas, Ohio State, because the winner of this game is going to be in the like front runner for that that well, let's call it what it is, the 12th seed in the playoff.
- 1:26:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:26:51SPEAKER_01: Um I I'm leaning Boise on this one for a couple of reasons.
- 1:26:57SPEAKER_01: One is I don't think Boise is going to be disappointed based off the the organ result.
- 1:27:05SPEAKER_01: I think this is one of those things of like, no, we went and proved we could play with one of the best teams in the country.
- 1:27:11SPEAKER_01: Now it's just time for us to just go out and show it for the rest of the year.
- 1:27:16SPEAKER_01: The second, and honestly, the biggest factor for me is Memphis started the year at UNLV, flew home, played at home.
- 1:27:24SPEAKER_01: Now they're flying back out to the West Coast in Idaho.
- 1:27:26SPEAKER_01: That's a lot of travel.
- 1:27:28SPEAKER_01: Um, and I know it's early, I know they're fresh and all that, but that is still body clockwise very, very hard on you know 18 to 23 year olds.
- 1:27:38SPEAKER_01: So I lean boise in this, but regardless, I can't wait to watch this game.
- 1:27:43SPEAKER_01: I think this is seriously one of the more important games of the of the early season.
- 1:27:48SPEAKER_00: Totally agree.
- 1:27:49SPEAKER_00: I did note a few other games um before we do our recap and just see if any of these stand out to you.
- 1:27:55SPEAKER_00: Duke, Illinois.
- 1:27:56SPEAKER_00: Illinois is a six and a half point favorite, USF for.
- 1:28:00SPEAKER_00: Versus Army, where Army is a three and a half point favorite.
- 1:28:03SPEAKER_00: Arkansas and Utah.
- 1:28:05SPEAKER_00: Utah comes in favored by 13.5.
- 1:28:08SPEAKER_00: Oregon in Oklahoma State.
- 1:28:09SPEAKER_00: We didn't talk about Oklahoma State, but sheesh.
- 1:28:13SPEAKER_00: Bad first game for Mestinmaker and Mr.
- 1:28:15SPEAKER_00: Morris.
- 1:28:16SPEAKER_00: They should fire Gundy again.
- 1:28:19SPEAKER_00: Oregon is favored over Oklahoma State on the road by 22.5 points.
- 1:28:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Leo.
- 1:28:28SPEAKER_00: Washington State, who we also just talked about, is a 17.5 point road dog to Kansas State.
- 1:28:34SPEAKER_00: Arizona State is a 14.5 point road dog to Texas AM.
- 1:28:39SPEAKER_00: BYU opens as seven and a half point favorites over Arizona.
- 1:28:43SPEAKER_00: And Pitt is a seven and a half point favorite over UCF.
- 1:28:46SPEAKER_00: Any of those games or lines or anything from that group stand out to you?
- 1:28:51SPEAKER_01: Well, in honor of my wife, the K-State grad, she is, of course, I've got to just mention the K-State game.
- 1:28:57SPEAKER_01: They put up 70 in their first game, looked really good.
- 1:29:01SPEAKER_01: Um I think two.
- 1:29:03SPEAKER_01: One is the Arizona BYU game.
- 1:29:05SPEAKER_01: Does that line smell super fishy to you?
- 1:29:08SPEAKER_01: Strange.
- 1:29:09SPEAKER_01: Seven and a half.
- 1:29:12SPEAKER_01: They're really the only true contender to Texas Tech in the Big 12 in a lot of people's eyes.
- 1:29:17SPEAKER_01: And so to come out and only be seven and a half point favorites, I think they're at home, right?
- 1:29:22SPEAKER_01: Or is it at Arizona?
- 1:29:23SPEAKER_00: No, it's at home.
- 1:29:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's in BYU.
- 1:29:26SPEAKER_01: And so like that line to me is just one of the again, everybody's gonna be on BYU in that spot.
- 1:29:33SPEAKER_01: And so I'm just I'm just taking a peek at that.
- 1:29:37SPEAKER_01: Is that a game where something weird's gonna happen that kind of like just does some of the old school Big 12 is good at Big 12 type things?
- 1:29:46SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 1:29:46SPEAKER_01: And then the other one is Duke, Illinois.
- 1:29:48SPEAKER_01: This was a game where last year there was a lot of hype around it, and Illinois just blew the doors off of Duke.
- 1:29:54SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, is Duke in a spot where they get their revenge.
- 1:29:58SPEAKER_01: Illinois pretty young at a lot of the uh key positions.
- 1:30:02SPEAKER_01: So I'm just curious to that.
- 1:30:04SPEAKER_01: That's another one where these ACC and these Big 12 teams, when they go up against the Big Ten and the SEC, they've gotta start winning these games to really give you know a little bit of like something for these conferences to believe in and go back when it comes playoff time of like, well, here's how we stacked up against these teams to show that they truly belong and get more than one team in these playoffs.
- 1:30:28SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:30:29SPEAKER_00: And the game that I was gonna highlight out of the out of the second group was actually a game that we both made a joke about, and that is Oregon and Oregon State.
- 1:30:38SPEAKER_00: But I think most people will look at that line and be terrified to touch Oregon there.
- 1:30:43SPEAKER_00: I think it makes all the sense in the world.
- 1:30:45SPEAKER_00: Uh I honestly think that that's probably seven points too few.
- 1:30:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:30:51SPEAKER_00: I think they're gonna beat the brakes off of Oklahoma State, especially after having to hear this narrative about them all week.
- 1:30:59SPEAKER_00: Oklahoma State had a very hard time containing Tulsa's passing offense.
- 1:31:04SPEAKER_00: I I am concerned for Eric Morris and what his team will look like Saturday at about three o'clock.
- 1:31:11SPEAKER_00: So that's one game that I'm I'm interested in.
- 1:31:14SPEAKER_00: Um, but also I I always like key numbers, and I always like to see when a line opens at 13 and a half.
- 1:31:22SPEAKER_00: I'm interested.
- 1:31:23SPEAKER_00: I I didn't was not impressed by Arkansas in their first game.
- 1:31:28SPEAKER_00: Um, I actually didn't see much of Utah, but the fact that that opened at 13 and a half on the road has me intrigued to what Arkansas might be able to muddy that game up a bit and and keep that close.
- 1:31:41SPEAKER_00: Um, but ultimately, this slate, these 16 games all look great.
- 1:31:46SPEAKER_00: I am very excited for week two.
- 1:31:48SPEAKER_00: Um, to recap our picks, I'm on Texas money line, Kansas plus six and a half.
- 1:31:53SPEAKER_00: I did not say that out loud.
- 1:31:55SPEAKER_00: Um, the team to the west plus six and a half, Georgia Tech plus 12.5, Kentucky plus 10.5, Mississippi State money line, Oklahoma, Michigan under 43.5, Iowa minus 14.5, and Memphis plus seven and a half.
- 1:32:10SPEAKER_00: Brandon's on Ohio State money line, Kansas plus six and a half, Georgia Tech plus 12.5, Bama minus 10.5, Minnesota.
- 1:32:20SPEAKER_00: Did you want money line, or did you just went straight for the one and a half?
- 1:32:24SPEAKER_00: Give me the one and a half.
- 1:32:26SPEAKER_00: Get on the one and a half.
- 1:32:27SPEAKER_00: Brandon is on Minnesota plus one and a half, uh, Michigan plus five and a half, Iowa minus fourteen and a half, and Boise minus seven and a half.
- 1:32:37SPEAKER_00: Brandon.
- 1:32:38SPEAKER_01: Sprinkle sprinkle Michigan and freaking not the mortgage, but close to it on Oregon.
- 1:32:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Brandon.
- 1:32:47SPEAKER_00: Um well, like I always ask everybody before they leave the tailgate, did you have a good time in the tailgate?
- 1:32:54SPEAKER_01: Anytime I get to chop it up with you, talk some college football, I always have a good time, my guy.
- 1:32:59SPEAKER_00: It was a good time.
- 1:33:00SPEAKER_00: We got to go through a lot of these games.
- 1:33:02SPEAKER_00: Uh, we have a fun week two slate in NFL starting in two days.
- 1:33:07SPEAKER_00: So um I appreciate you hopping in the tailgate, man.
- 1:33:11SPEAKER_00: Thanks for having me.
- 1:33:22SPEAKER_00: Well, that was awesome getting to do our tail the tailgate segment with our friend Brandon Ogden there.
- 1:33:29SPEAKER_00: Exciting week two ahead.

- 1:34:24SPEAKER_00: Whole lot to see here.
- 1:34:26SPEAKER_00: How Sam Darnold looks without a Kubiak call on the plays.
- 1:34:30SPEAKER_00: A lot to digest here in the opening game for the NFL.
- 1:34:34SPEAKER_00: And we will actually dive into that a little bit more on the podcast tomorrow as we go through all of the games for week one in the NFL season.
- 1:34:43SPEAKER_00: My gold star for the weekend, Malachi Tony.
- 1:34:48SPEAKER_00: It had to be you.
- 1:34:49SPEAKER_00: It most certainly couldn't be anybody else.
- 1:34:52SPEAKER_00: A school record.
- 1:34:53SPEAKER_00: When you you hear school records at schools like the University of Miami, who have had as many guys as they have had play receiver there, 234 yards, three touchdowns, a few Heisman cellies in the end zone, and that guy was unguardable.
- 1:35:12SPEAKER_00: Stanford had no interest in covering Malachi Tony, and that was apparent from the first play of the game.
- 1:35:18SPEAKER_00: Malachi Tony, you are the gold star of the weekend.
- 1:35:21SPEAKER_00: Might not be the only one you get this year, but you were the gold star.
- 1:35:26SPEAKER_00: A little bit about what's ahead on the Tailgate podcast.
