Speaker 1: The Creation of Adam, Episode 2, Part 1, The Creation
• 0:03
Speaker 1: of Adam. Before humanity walked upon the earth, before the
• 0:05
Speaker 1: first human voice broke the silence, and before the first
• 0:08
Speaker 1: generation began its journey through life, Allah decreed the creation
• 0:11
Speaker 1: of a remarkable new being.
• 0:13
Speaker 2: His name would be Adam.
• 0:14
Speaker 1: He would become the father of humanity, the beginning of
• 0:17
Speaker 1: the human family, and the first human being in a
• 0:19
Speaker 1: story that would continue across generations, nations, and centuries. But
• 0:23
Speaker 1: the creation of Adam was not merely the beginning of
• 0:26
Speaker 1: human life. It was also the beginning of a responsibility
• 0:29
Speaker 1: unlike any other in human history, a responsibility connected with knowledge, obedience,
• 0:34
Speaker 1: moral choices, and humanity's place on earth. And surrounding this
• 0:38
Speaker 1: remarkable beginning was a moment that would reveal the limits
• 0:40
Speaker 1: of created knowledge and the greatness of Allah's wisdom. To
• 0:44
Speaker 1: understand the creation of Adam, we must return to the
• 0:47
Speaker 1: moment when Allah informed the angels that he would place
• 0:49
Speaker 1: a caliphah on earth. The angels asked about the possibility
• 0:52
Speaker 1: of corruption and bloodshed. Allah answered that he knew what
• 0:55
Speaker 1: they did not know, Those few words contain a profound lesson.
• 0:59
Speaker 1: The knowledge of Allah encompasses what his creation can understand
• 1:02
Speaker 1: and what remains beyond its understanding. A created being may
• 1:05
Speaker 1: recognize one possibility without knowing the full wisdom behind the
• 1:09
Speaker 1: divine plan. Humanity would have the capacity to make mistakes.
• 1:13
Speaker 1: Human beings would sometimes commit injustice and cause suffering. Yet
• 1:17
Speaker 1: their story would also include faith, knowledge, repentance, compassion, and
• 1:20
Speaker 1: acts of righteousness. The angels did not possess complete knowledge
• 1:24
Speaker 1: of what humanity's future would contain, but Allah knew. And
• 1:27
Speaker 1: the creation of Adam would reveal the beginning of a
• 1:29
Speaker 1: new chapter in the story of creation, the creation from clay.
• 1:33
Speaker 1: The Quran repeatedly connects the creation of Adam with clay
• 1:36
Speaker 1: and the earthly material from which Allah created him. In
• 1:39
Speaker 1: different passages, the Quran uses descriptions including dust, clay, and
• 1:43
Speaker 1: shaped clay in discussing the creation of humanity. These descriptions
• 1:47
Speaker 1: direct our attention to a remarkable contrast. The first human
• 1:50
Speaker 1: being was not created from gold, silver, or some material
• 1:54
Speaker 1: that human beings would later consider precious. Adam's origin was
• 1:58
Speaker 1: connected with the earth beneath our feet. The very substance
• 2:01
Speaker 1: that people often overlook would become part of the beginning
• 2:04
Speaker 1: of the human family. Consider the significance of this image.
• 2:07
Speaker 1: From the earth come the plants that provide food. The
• 2:10
Speaker 1: soil supports forests, fields, and countless forms of life. The
• 2:14
Speaker 1: ground receives rain, nourishes crops, and sustains the natural world
• 2:17
Speaker 1: upon which human communities depend. And according to the Quranic account,
• 2:21
Speaker 1: Adam's creation was connected with clay. This origin reminds humanity
• 2:26
Speaker 1: that greatness is not determined simply by the material from
• 2:28
Speaker 1: which a being is created. Iblis would later make the
• 2:31
Speaker 1: opposite mistake. He would compare his origin from fire with
• 2:35
Speaker 1: Adam's origin from clay and use that comparison as an
• 2:38
Speaker 1: excuse for arrogance. But the lesson of Adam's creation was
• 2:41
Speaker 1: never that one created substance could independently claim superiority over another.
• 2:46
Speaker 1: The creator alone possesses absolute authority. A being's worth cannot
• 2:50
Speaker 1: be established by proudly comparing its origin with the origin
• 2:53
Speaker 1: of another. The creation of Adam would demonstrate that Allah
• 2:56
Speaker 1: can grant distinction and responsibility according to his wisdom. Clay
• 3:00
Speaker 1: in the hands of the Creator was not an obstacle
• 3:03
Speaker 1: to the beginning of humanity. It was part of the
• 3:05
Speaker 1: means through which Allah brought Adam into existence. The Quran
• 3:09
Speaker 1: does not require us to invent a detailed physical process
• 3:12
Speaker 1: beyond what Revelation tells us. We do not need to
• 3:14
Speaker 1: imagine the exact appearance of the first human body at
• 3:17
Speaker 1: every stage or claim to know details that have not
• 3:19
Speaker 1: been established. What matters is the central truth. Adam was
• 3:23
Speaker 1: created by Allah. His existence was not an accident beyond
• 3:27
Speaker 1: divine knowledge, and the beginning of humanity was part of
• 3:30
Speaker 1: the plan of the one who created the heavens and
• 3:32
Speaker 1: the earth, the honor given to Adam. The creation of
• 3:35
Speaker 1: Adam was accompanied by a distinction that the Quran describes
• 3:38
  Speaker 1: with particular importance.
• 3:40
Speaker 2: Allah taught Adam the names.
• 3:41
Speaker 1: In Surah Al-Baqarah, the Quran describes Allah teaching Adam the
• 3:45
Speaker 1: names and then presenting them to the angels. When the
• 3:48
Speaker 1: angels were asked to identify them, they acknowledged the limits
• 3:50
Speaker 1: of their knowledge. They declared that they knew only what
• 3:53
Speaker 1: Allah had taught them. Allah then directed Adam to inform
• 3:56
Speaker 1: them of the names. This passage is central to understanding
• 3:59
Speaker 1: the significance of Adam's creation. It reveals that knowledge would
• 4:03
Speaker 1: be an important part of the human story. Human beings
• 4:06
Speaker 1: would not merely exist as physical creatures moving across the earth.
• 4:10
Speaker 1: They would possess the ability to learn, recognize, communicate, and develop,
• 4:14
Speaker 1: understanding according to the capacities Allah granted them. The Quran
• 4:18
Speaker 1: does not provide an exhaustive explanation of every name included
• 4:21
Speaker 1: in this account. Scholars have discussed its meaning and implications,
• 4:25
Speaker 1: but we should not claim certainty about details that the
• 4:27
Speaker 1: text itself does not specify. What the passage clearly demonstrates
• 4:31
Speaker 1: is that Allah taught Adam knowledge that the angels did
• 4:34
Speaker 1: not possess in that moment. The angels acknowledged that their
• 4:37
Speaker 1: knowledge was limited to what Allah had taught them. Adam
• 4:40
Speaker 1: then communicated what he had been taught. This was not
• 4:43
Speaker 1: evidence that Adam possessed knowledge independently of Allah. It demonstrated
• 4:47
Speaker 1: the generosity of the Creator in granting knowledge to His creation,
• 4:51
Speaker 1: and it established a lesson that humanity would need to
• 4:53
Speaker 1: remember throughout its history. Knowledge is a gift, but possessing
• 4:57
Speaker 1: knowledge should not lead to arrogance. The more a person learns,
• 5:00
Speaker 1: the more clearly that person may recognize how much remains unknown.
• 5:04
Speaker 1: A wise individual does not confuse the ability to understand
• 5:07
Speaker 1: something with the ability to understand everything. A knowledgeable person
• 5:11
Speaker 1: does not become the source of all truth simply because
• 5:13
Speaker 1: others have learned from him. Human knowledge is acquired within
• 5:17
Speaker 1: the limits Allah has allowed. Every generation begins life without
• 5:20
Speaker 1: knowing everything that previous generations discovered. Children must learn language, numbers, relationships,
• 5:26
Speaker 1: and the world around them. Teachers pass on knowledge. Researchers
• 5:30
Speaker 1: investigate questions. Communities preserve information through communication and writing. Over time,
• 5:35
Speaker 1: human understanding grows. Yet even the greatest scholar possesses only
• 5:39
Speaker 1: a limited portion of what could be known. The story
• 5:42
Speaker 1: of Adam reminds us that knowledge should be accompanied by humility.
• 5:45
Speaker 1: The angels acknowledged the limits of their knowledge. Adam received
• 5:49
Speaker 1: knowledge from Allah, and both parts of the account direct
• 5:52
Speaker 1: attention toward the one whose knowledge is complete, when the
• 5:55
Speaker 1: angels acknowledged their limits. Imagine the significance of that moment.
• 5:59
Speaker 1: The angels had asked a question about humanity's future. Now
• 6:02
Speaker 1: they were being shown something connected with Adam's knowledge. When
• 6:05
Speaker 1: asked to identify what they did not know, they did
• 6:07
Speaker 1: not pretend to possess information they lacked. They did not
• 6:10
Speaker 1: invent an answer to protect their reputation. They did not
• 6:13
Speaker 1: claim superiority merely because they were already part of the
• 6:16
Speaker 1: unseen world. Instead, they acknowledged their limits. Their response teaches
• 6:21
Speaker 1: a lesson that remains important in every age. There is
• 6:24
Speaker 1: no shame in admitting that something is unknown. Pretending to
• 6:27
Speaker 1: know what one does not know is far more dangerous.
• 6:30
Speaker 1: When people refuse to acknowledge the limits of their understanding,
• 6:33
Speaker 1: they may begin to treat guesses as facts and opinions
• 6:36
Speaker 1: as unquestionable truths. They may reject good advice simply because
• 6:39
Speaker 1: it challenges their assumptions. They may even mislead others while
• 6:43
Speaker 1: believing that confidence is the same as knowledge. The Quranic
• 6:46
Speaker 1: account presents a different example. The angels acknowledged that they
• 6:50
Speaker 1: knew only what Allah had taught them. Their response recognized
• 6:53
Speaker 1: the difference between the knowledge of the Creator and the
• 6:55
Speaker 1: knowledge of created beings. This distinction is essential to understanding
• 6:59
Speaker 1: the entire story of Adam. Adam's knowledge was granted to him.
• 7:03
Speaker 1: The angels' knowledge was granted to them. Neither was independent
• 7:07
Speaker 1: of Allah. and no created being could claim complete knowledge
• 7:10
Speaker 1: simply because it possessed a special ability or position. The
• 7:13
Speaker 1: first chapter of humanity's history therefore begins with an important principle.
• 7:17
Speaker 1: Knowledge is valuable, learning is valuable, but humility is essential
• 7:22
Speaker 1: to using knowledge correctly. A person may memorize thousands of
• 7:25
Speaker 1: facts and still behave unjustly. Another may possess a great
• 7:28
Speaker 1: deal of practical skill but refuse to admit a mistake.
• 7:32
Speaker 1: Knowledge becomes most beneficial when it is accompanied by honesty, responsibility,
• 7:36
Speaker 1: and a willingness to recognize the truth. This lesson will
• 7:39
Speaker 1: become especially important when we consider the contrast between Adam
• 7:42
Speaker 1: and Iblis. Both are central figures in the early story
• 7:46
Speaker 1: of humanity, but their responses to the commands of Allah
• 7:49
Speaker 1: would reveal very different attitudes. One part of the story
• 7:52
Speaker 1: emphasizes the knowledge Allah granted Adam. Another will reveal the
• 7:56
Speaker 1: arrogance that led Iblis to refuse the command associated with Adam.
• 8:00
Speaker 1: For now, we remain focused on the creation of the
• 8:02
Speaker 1: first human being and the significance of the knowledge he received.
• 8:06
Speaker 1: The command to prostrate. After describing the knowledge given to Adam,
• 8:09
Speaker 1: the Quran recounts another extraordinary moment. Allah commanded the angels
• 8:13
Speaker 1: to prostrate before Adam. The angels obeyed. Iblis, however, refused.
• 8:18
Speaker 1: This event is recorded in several passages of the Quran,
• 8:21
Speaker 1: including Surah Al-Baqarah. It is important to understand what the
• 8:24
Speaker 1: prostration meant. It was not worship of Adam. In Islam,
• 8:28
Speaker 1: worship belongs to Allah alone. The prostration was an act
• 8:31
Speaker 1: carried out in obedience to Allah's command and represented an
• 8:34
Speaker 1: honor granted to Adam. The angels obeyed the command they
• 8:37
Speaker 1: had received. Iblis did not. This moment belongs to a
• 8:40
Speaker 1: larger story, but it also reveals something important about Adam's position.
• 8:45
Speaker 1: Allah had created Adam and granted him knowledge. Then Allah
• 8:48
Speaker 1: commanded the angels to prostrate before him. The honor did
• 8:51
Speaker 1: not come from Adam declaring himself superior. It came from
• 8:54
Speaker 1: the command of his creator. Adam did not establish his
• 8:57
Speaker 1: own status through arrogance. His distinction was granted by Allah.
• 9:01
Speaker 1: This difference is crucial. True honor does not require a
• 9:04
Speaker 1: person to humiliate others. Knowledge does not require a person
• 9:07
Speaker 1: to become proud, and receiving a responsibility does not mean
• 9:11
Speaker 1: that someone has the right to act as though the
• 9:13
Speaker 1: rules no longer apply to him. The command concerning Adam
• 9:16
Speaker 1: would expose Iblis' pride, but that part of the story
• 9:19
Speaker 1: has its own place. Here, we should focus on what
• 9:22
Speaker 1: the event tells us about the beginning of humanity. Adam's
• 9:25
Speaker 1: creation was not an ordinary occurrence within the Quranic narrative.
• 9:29
Speaker 1: It was accompanied by a divine announcement, the teaching of knowledge,
• 9:32
Speaker 1: and a command addressed to the angels. The first human
• 9:35
Speaker 1: being had a significant place within the story of creation.
• 9:38
Speaker 1: Yet this honor did not make Adam a god or
• 9:40
Speaker 1: give him any share in the divinity of Allah. He
• 9:43
Speaker 1: remained a created being. His existence depended upon his creator.
• 9:47
Speaker 1: His knowledge was granted by his creator, and his position
• 9:50
Speaker 1: was determined by his creator. This is the foundation of
• 9:53
Speaker 1: the Islamic understanding of human dignity. Human beings may possess
• 9:57
Speaker 1: abilities and responsibilities that distinguish them from other creatures, but
• 10:01
Speaker 1: they remain servants of Allah. Their honor should lead them
• 10:04
Speaker 1: toward gratitude and obedience, not self-worship. The Difference Between Knowledge
• 10:09
Speaker 1: and Arrogance The creation of Adam presents an important contrast
• 10:12
Speaker 1: between two responses to divine command. Adam received knowledge from Allah.
• 10:17
Speaker 1: Iblis relied upon his own judgment to justify disobedience. Adam's
• 10:21
Speaker 1: knowledge was a gift. Iblis's comparison between fire and clay
• 10:25
Speaker 1: became an excuse for pride. The difference between these attitudes
• 10:28
Speaker 1: is more significant than the materials mentioned in the story.
• 10:32
Speaker 1: A person can use knowledge to understand the limits of
• 10:34
Speaker 1: personal judgment. Or a person can use knowledge as a
• 10:37
Speaker 1: reason to believe that no one else deserves respect. A
• 10:40
Speaker 1: person can learn a great deal and become more thoughtful.
• 10:43
Speaker 1: or that person can become convinced that learning makes every
• 10:46
Speaker 1: opinion correct. The same distinction appears in ordinary human life.
• 10:51
Speaker 1: Imagine a student who receives an opportunity to learn something valuable.
• 10:55
Speaker 1: One response is gratitude, effort, and a willingness to continue learning.
• 10:59
Speaker 1: Another is to assume that success makes further learning unnecessary.
• 11:02
Speaker 1: The first attitude leaves room for growth. The second creates
• 11:06
Speaker 1: a barrier against it. The story of Adam reminds us
• 11:08
Speaker 1: that receiving knowledge is not the end of learning. It
• 11:11
Speaker 1: is part of a greater responsibility. Knowledge can help people
• 11:14
Speaker 1: distinguish between right and wrong, communicate ideas, understand the world,
• 11:18
Speaker 1: and make better decisions. But knowledge must not become a
• 11:21
Speaker 1: tool for unjust pride. A person who knows more than
• 11:24
Speaker 1: someone else has not become independent of Allah. A person
• 11:28
Speaker 1: who possesses a particular talent has not gained the right
• 11:31
Speaker 1: to treat others with contempt. And a person who receives
• 11:34
Speaker 1: an honor has not been released from moral responsibility. The
• 11:37
Speaker 1: creation of Adam therefore carries a lesson that extends far
• 11:40
Speaker 1: beyond the beginning of human history. What matters is not
• 11:43
Speaker 1: simply what a person possesses. What matters is how that
• 11:46
Speaker 1: gift is understood and used. The beginning of human responsibility.
• 11:51
Speaker 1: Adam's creation marked the beginning of the human family. Every
• 11:54
Speaker 1: generation that followed would be connected to that beginning. Human
• 11:57
Speaker 1: beings would inhabit different lands, develop different languages, form families
• 12:02
Speaker 1: and communities, and experience a vast range of circumstances. They
• 12:06
Speaker 1: would learn to cultivate the earth, construct homes, travel across oceans,
• 12:09
Speaker 1: and build civilizations. They would create works of art, develop
• 12:13
Speaker 1: systems of knowledge, and discover ways to communicate across enormous distances.
• 12:17
Speaker 1: They would also face suffering, disagreement, injustice, and the consequences
• 12:21
Speaker 1: of their own choices. The human story would contain extraordinary
• 12:24
Speaker 1: achievements and terrible failures. But the beginning of that story,
• 12:28
Speaker 1: as presented in the Quran, reminds us that humanity exists
• 12:31
Speaker 1: within a relationship of dependence upon its creator. Human beings
• 12:35
Speaker 1: do not create themselves. They do not possess complete knowledge.
• 12:39
Speaker 1: and they do not determine the ultimate truth simply through
• 12:41
Speaker 1: personal preference. The ability to learn is a gift, the
• 12:45
Speaker 1: ability to make choices brings responsibility, and the opportunity to
• 12:48
Speaker 1: live on earth should encourage gratitude rather than arrogance. The
• 12:52
Speaker 1: Quranic account of Adam also challenges the idea that human
• 12:55
Speaker 1: worth can be measured through material origin alone. Iblis believed
• 12:59
Speaker 1: that fire made him superior to clay. But Allah's command
• 13:02
Speaker 1: was not determined by Iblis' personal ranking of those materials.
• 13:06
Speaker 1: The Creator's wisdom was greater than Iblis's judgment. This lesson
• 13:10
Speaker 1: remains relevant whenever people attempt to measure human worth through
• 13:13
Speaker 1: superficial comparisons. Wealth does not make one person inherently more
• 13:17
Speaker 1: worthy than another. Physical strength does not grant someone the
• 13:21
Speaker 1: right to abuse the weak. Intelligence does not justify cruelty.
• 13:25
Speaker 1: And social position does not remove the obligation to act justly.
• 13:29
Speaker 1: The beginning of humanity points toward a different standard. Human
• 13:32
Speaker 1: beings should recognize their dependence upon Allah and understand that
• 13:35
Speaker 1: the gifts they receive carry responsibilities. A new chapter for
• 13:39
Speaker 1: the earth. The creation of Adam was the beginning of
• 13:42
Speaker 1: a human story that would reach far beyond the first
• 13:44
Speaker 1: moment of his existence. The earth would become the home
• 13:47
Speaker 1: of countless generations. Human beings would experience joy and grief,
• 13:51
Speaker 1: success and failure, knowledge and uncertainty. They would face questions
• 13:55
Speaker 1: about the purpose of their lives and the responsibilities attached
• 13:58
Speaker 1: to their actions. The Quranic account establishes the foundation of
• 14:01
Speaker 1: that story through Adam's creation, the knowledge Allah taught him,
• 14:05
Speaker 1: and the command given to the angels. These events remind
• 14:08
Speaker 1: us that the beginning of humanity was not simply about
• 14:11
Speaker 1: the appearance of a new physical form. It was also
• 14:14
Speaker 1: about knowledge, honor, and responsibility. Adam's knowledge demonstrated that Allah
• 14:18
Speaker 1: can teach his creation what he wills. The angels' response
• 14:21
Speaker 1: demonstrated that created knowledge has limits. And the command to
• 14:25
Speaker 1: prostrate before Adam revealed a distinction between obedience and arrogance.
• 14:29
Speaker 1: The first human being had been created. A new chapter
• 14:32
Speaker 1: had begun. but this part of the story has not
• 14:34
Speaker 1: yet reached its conclusion. The creation of Adam is connected
• 14:37
Speaker 1: with further events that must be understood separately. His life
• 14:41
Speaker 1: in paradise, the command concerning the forbidden tree, and the
• 14:44
Speaker 1: events that eventually led to humanity's life on earth belong
• 14:47
Speaker 1: to later chapters. They should not be confused with the
• 14:50
Speaker 1: account of Adam's creation. For now, the essential truth is clear.
• 14:54
Speaker 1: Allah created Adam from earthly material and granted him knowledge.
• 14:58
Speaker 1: The angels acknowledged that their knowledge was limited to what
• 15:01
Speaker 1: Allah had taught them. and Allah commanded the angels to
• 15:04
Speaker 1: prostrate before Adam, a command they obeyed while Iblis refused.
• 15:08
Speaker 1: These events established the beginning of a story whose lessons
• 15:11
Speaker 1: remain relevant to humanity today, a story about the value
• 15:14
Speaker 1: of knowledge, a story about the danger of arrogance, and
• 15:17
Speaker 1: a story about the responsibilities that accompany the gifts granted
• 15:21
Speaker 1: by the Creator. The first human being had entered the
• 15:24
Speaker 1: story of creation, and the next chapter would explore what
• 15:27
Speaker 1: happened after that beginning. End of Episode 2, Part 1,
• 15:30
Speaker 1: The Creation of Adam. Next, Episode 2, Part 2, The
• 15:33
Speaker 1: Pride That Destroyed Iblis. The Pride That Destroyed Iblis. Episode 2,
• 15:37
Speaker 1: Part 2, The Pride That Destroyed Iblis. There are moments
• 15:40
Speaker 1: in the history of creation that reveal more than a
• 15:42
Speaker 1: thousand years of ordinary events ever could. Moments when a
• 15:45
Speaker 1: single decision exposes the condition of a heart. Moments when
• 15:49
Speaker 1: pride becomes stronger than reason, when personal desire becomes more
• 15:53
Speaker 1: important than truth, and when a being chooses rebellion despite
• 15:56
Speaker 1: knowing that obedience is the right path. The story of
• 15:59
Speaker 1: Iblis contains such a moment. His refusal to obey Allah's
• 16:02
Speaker 1: command was not merely an isolated act of disobedience. It
• 16:06
Speaker 1: revealed an attitude that would shape everything that followed. Instead
• 16:09
Speaker 1: of accepting the command with humility, Iblis challenged it through
• 16:13
Speaker 1: his own judgment. Instead of recognizing the limits of his understanding,
• 16:16
Speaker 1: he treated his opinion as superior. And instead of turning
• 16:20
Speaker 1: back after his wrongdoing, he declared his intention to mislead humanity.
• 16:24
Speaker 1: His story is therefore not simply a story about a
• 16:26
Speaker 1: being who refused to obey. It is a warning about
• 16:29
Speaker 1: what happens when arrogance takes control of the heart. But
• 16:32
Speaker 1: to understand the true significance of this downfall, we must
• 16:35
Speaker 1: look beyond the moment of refusal. We must examine the
• 16:38
Speaker 1: difference between knowledge and wisdom, between confidence and arrogance, between
• 16:43
Speaker 1: making a mistake and defending that mistake, and between facing
• 16:46
Speaker 1: the consequences of wrongdoing and deliberately choosing to continue upon
• 16:50
Speaker 1: the wrong path. These differences form the heart of this chapter.
• 16:53
Speaker 1: And they reveal why the story of Iblis remains one
• 16:55
Speaker 1: of the most important warnings in the Quranic account of
• 16:58
Speaker 1: humanity's beginning. Chapter 1. When Pride Became a Barrier The
• 17:02
Speaker 1: Quran tells us that Iblis refused to prostrate before Adam
• 17:05
Speaker 1: when Allah commanded the angels to do so. When questioned
• 17:08
Speaker 1: about his refusal, Iblis argued that he was better than Adam.
• 17:12
Speaker 1: He compared their origins. He said that he had been
• 17:15
Speaker 1: created from fire while Adam had been created from clay.
• 17:18
Speaker 1: In his reasoning, fire made him superior, clay in his
• 17:21
Speaker 1: judgment made Adam inferior, but the deepest problem was not
• 17:24
Speaker 1: the comparison itself. The deeper problem was the authority Iblis
• 17:28
Speaker 1: gave to his own opinion. Allah had issued the command,
• 17:31
Speaker 1: Iblis had received it, yet Iblis treated his own reasoning
• 17:34
Speaker 1: as sufficient grounds to refuse. He looked at the materials
• 17:37
Speaker 1: from which the two creations had been made, formed a
• 17:40
Speaker 1: judgment based upon that comparison, and used the judgment to
• 17:43
Speaker 1: justify disobedience. He focused on what he believed made himself greater.
• 17:47
Speaker 1: He ignored the fact that the Creator had commanded him
• 17:49
Speaker 1: to act differently and and in doing so, he placed
• 17:52
Speaker 1: his own pride above obedience. This is the essence of arrogance.
• 17:56
Speaker 1: Arrogance is not simply recognizing that someone possesses a particular ability.
• 18:00
Speaker 1: A person may be intelligent. Another may be physically strong.
• 18:04
Speaker 1: Someone else may have extensive knowledge or exceptional practical skills.
• 18:08
Speaker 1: Recognizing such differences is not automatically arrogance. Arrogance emerges when
• 18:13
Speaker 1: a person uses an advantage, real or imagined, to justify
• 18:16
Speaker 1: looking down upon others or rejecting what is right. It
• 18:20
Speaker 1: appears when a person believes that personal status creates a
• 18:23
Speaker 1: special exemption from moral responsibility. It appears when someone refuses
• 18:27
Speaker 1: to accept correction because admitting an error would damage personal pride.
• 18:31
Speaker 1: And it appears when a person believes that being different
• 18:34
Speaker 1: makes him inherently more deserving than everyone else. Iblis's argument
• 18:38
Speaker 1: followed precisely this dangerous direction. He did not merely say
• 18:41
Speaker 1: that fire and clay were different. He used the difference
• 18:44
Speaker 1: to claim superiority. Then he used that claimed superiority to
• 18:48
Speaker 1: reject the command of Allah. His mistake demonstrates that a
• 18:51
Speaker 1: person can possess an argument and still be wrong. A
• 18:54
Speaker 1: person can speak confidently and still be mistaken. A person
• 18:57
Speaker 1: can identify a difference between two things and still draw
• 19:00
Speaker 1: an unjust conclusion from it. The existence of a difference
• 19:03
Speaker 1: does not automatically establish superiority. And no created being can
• 19:08
Speaker 1: use a personal comparison to overrule the authority of the creator.
• 19:11
Speaker 1: This lesson reaches far beyond the ancient story. Imagine a
• 19:15
Speaker 1: person who believes that wealth makes him more important than
• 19:17
Speaker 1: the poor. He begins to treat those with less money
• 19:20
Speaker 1: as though their dignity were somehow smaller. Imagine someone who
• 19:24
Speaker 1: receives a high position and begins to believe that ordinary
• 19:27
Speaker 1: rules no longer apply. He stops listening to advice, dismisses criticism,
• 19:31
Speaker 1: and treats every disagreement as an insult. Imagine a person
• 19:35
Speaker 1: who possesses considerable knowledge but refuses to learn from anyone
• 19:38
Speaker 1: he considers less educated. Such attitudes may look different on
• 19:42
Speaker 1: the surface, yet they share a common foundation. The individual
• 19:46
Speaker 1: has taken something he possesses and transformed it into a
• 19:49
Speaker 1: reason to consider himself above others. That is why the
• 19:52
Speaker 1: story of Iblis is so powerful. It reveals the danger
• 19:55
Speaker 1: of allowing pride to determine how truth is judged. The
• 19:58
Speaker 1: moment a person decides that personal status is more important
• 20:01
Speaker 1: than what is right, the heart begins moving toward a
• 20:04
Speaker 1: dangerous place. And if that attitude is repeatedly defended rather
• 20:08
Speaker 1: than corrected, it can become a barrier against repentance. Chapter
• 20:11
Speaker 1: 2 The Difference Between Making a Mistake and Defending It
• 20:15
Speaker 1: Every human being can make mistakes. People misunderstand instructions. They
• 20:19
Speaker 1: reach incorrect conclusions. They speak too quickly, act out of anger,
• 20:22
Speaker 1: or allow emotion to influence a decision. A mistake can
• 20:26
Speaker 1: occur because knowledge is incomplete. It can occur because a
• 20:29
Speaker 1: person has not thought carefully enough. It can occur because
• 20:32
Speaker 1: temptation becomes stronger than judgment in a particular moment, but
• 20:36
Speaker 1: making a mistake and deliberately defending wrongdoing are not the
• 20:39
  Speaker 1: same thing.
• 20:40
Speaker 2: The story of Iblis highlights this distinction.
• 20:42
Speaker 1: After refusing the command, Iblis did not respond with the
• 20:45
Speaker 1: humility associated with sincere repentance. Instead, he defended his refusal
• 20:50
Speaker 1: through an argument about superiority. He presented his comparison between
• 20:54
Speaker 1: fire and clay as a justification for disobedience. Rather than
• 20:58
Speaker 1: allowing the command of Allah to correct his judgment, He
• 21:01
Speaker 1: treated his own judgment as a reason to reject the command.
• 21:05
Speaker 1: This is what makes his response so significant. He did
• 21:07
Speaker 1: not merely fail to carry out an instruction. He attempted
• 21:10
Speaker 1: to justify the refusal. Consider how this pattern can develop
• 21:14
Speaker 1: in ordinary life. A person speaks harshly to a family member.
• 21:18
Speaker 1: At first, the wrongdoing may be obvious. The person knows
• 21:21
Speaker 1: that the words caused pain, but instead of apologizing, the
• 21:23
Speaker 1: person begins searching for excuses. Perhaps the other person was irritating.
• 21:28
Speaker 1: Perhaps the situation was stressful. Perhaps the words were deserved.
• 21:32
Speaker 1: One excuse leads to another until the original wrongdoing becomes
• 21:35
Speaker 1: difficult to acknowledge. The person is no longer simply dealing
• 21:38
Speaker 1: with the mistake. The person is defending the decision to
• 21:41
Speaker 1: make it. Another individual may spread false information. When challenged,
• 21:45
Speaker 1: that individual refuses to correct the claim because doing so
• 21:48
Speaker 1: would damage personal reputation. The falsehood continues, not because the
• 21:52
Speaker 1: truth is impossible to discover, but because pride has made
• 21:55
Speaker 1: correction feel unbearable. A leader may make a harmful decision
• 21:59
Speaker 1: and then blame everyone except himself. An employee may refuse
• 22:03
Speaker 1: to acknowledge an error because another person might gain recognition.
• 22:07
Speaker 1: A student may reject a correct answer simply because it
• 22:09
Speaker 1: comes from someone he dislikes. In each case, pride transforms
• 22:13
Speaker 1: a correctable problem into a deeper moral failure. The lesson
• 22:16
Speaker 1: is not that every mistake has the same seriousness, nor
• 22:19
Speaker 1: should we assume that every person who struggles to admit
• 22:22
Speaker 1: an error is behaving exactly like Iblees. The point is
• 22:25
Speaker 1: more specific. Defending wrongdoing because of arrogance is dangerous. A
• 22:30
Speaker 1: person who can acknowledge an error has an opportunity to
• 22:32
Speaker 1: correct it. A person who insists that every error must
• 22:35
Speaker 1: be justified may continue repeating it. Humility allows the truth
• 22:39
Speaker 1: to enter. Arrogance attempts to keep the truth outside. This
• 22:42
Speaker 1: is one of the reasons sincere repentance occupies such an
• 22:45
Speaker 1: important place in Islamic teaching. Repentance requires a person to
• 22:49
Speaker 1: recognize wrongdoing rather than disguise it. It requires turning back
• 22:53
Speaker 1: to Allah rather than treating personal desire as the final authority.
• 22:57
Speaker 1: And it requires understanding that human dignity does not depend
• 23:00
Speaker 1: upon pretending to be incapable of error. A person does
• 23:03
Speaker 1: not become worthless by admitting a mistake, but refusing to
• 23:07
Speaker 1: acknowledge wrongdoing can cause serious harm to oneself and others.
• 23:11
Speaker 1: Iblis's story warns against that refusal. It shows how pride
• 23:14
Speaker 1: can transform disobedience into a persistent attitude of rebellion. Chapter
• 23:18
Speaker 1: 3 The Danger of Comparison Comparison is a powerful part
• 23:22
Speaker 1: of human life. People compare their abilities, possessions, achievements, appearances,
• 23:27
Speaker 1: education and social positions. Sometimes comparison helps people understand their
• 23:31
Speaker 1: strengths and weaknesses. A student compares two methods of solving
• 23:35
Speaker 1: a problem and discovers which one works better. A worker
• 23:38
Speaker 1: examines the results of different approaches and learns how to improve.
• 23:42
Speaker 1: A person reflects upon the behavior of a righteous individual
• 23:45
Speaker 1: and becomes inspired to act with greater kindness. but comparison
• 23:49
Speaker 1: becomes dangerous when it is used to justify contempt. Iblis
• 23:53
Speaker 1: compared himself with Adam and concluded that he was superior.
• 23:56
Speaker 1: The Quran records his argument about fire and clay, exposing
• 24:00
Speaker 1: the reasoning behind his refusal. His comparison did not lead
• 24:03
Speaker 1: him toward humility. It led him toward disobedience. The problem
• 24:07
Speaker 1: was not simply that he noticed a difference. The problem
• 24:09
Speaker 1: was that he treated the difference as a reason to
• 24:12
Speaker 1: reject Allah's command. This distinction is essential. Not every difference
• 24:16
Speaker 1: creates a hierarchy of moral worth. Two people may possess
• 24:19
Speaker 1: different talents without one becoming entitled to humiliate the other.
• 24:23
Speaker 1: Two communities may have different traditions without one being justified
• 24:26
Speaker 1: in treating the other with injustice. Two individuals may have
• 24:30
Speaker 1: different levels of education without one losing the right to
• 24:33
Speaker 1: be treated with dignity. Human beings often become trapped when
• 24:37
Speaker 1: they believe that their value depends upon being better than
• 24:39
Speaker 1: someone else. If another person succeeds, they feel threatened. If
• 24:43
Speaker 1: another person receives praise, they feel overlooked. If another person
• 24:46
Speaker 1: corrects their mistake, they feel attacked. Their peace depends upon
• 24:50
Speaker 1: maintaining a position above others. This creates an endless struggle.
• 24:54
Speaker 1: There will always be someone who possesses more wealth, greater strength,
• 24:57
Speaker 1: broader knowledge, or a different kind of talent. A person
• 25:00
Speaker 1: who builds an identity around superiority can never find lasting
• 25:03
Speaker 1: security through comparison. There will always be another comparison to make.
• 25:07
Speaker 1: And when superiority becomes the foundation of personal identity, other
• 25:11
Speaker 1: people begin to look like threats rather than fellow human beings.
• 25:15
Speaker 1: The story of Iblis challenges this way of thinking at
• 25:17
Speaker 1: its root. The origin of a created being does not
• 25:20
Speaker 1: grant it permission to reject the authority of its creator.
• 25:23
Speaker 1: An imagined advantage does not make disobedience acceptable. Impersonal pride
• 25:28
Speaker 1: cannot determine the truth. A believer should therefore be cautious
• 25:31
Speaker 1: about turning differences into excuses for arrogance. A person's wealth
• 25:35
Speaker 1: is not a license to mistreat the poor. A person's
• 25:38
Speaker 1: strength is not a license to intimidate the weak. A
• 25:41
Speaker 1: person's intelligence is not a license to humiliate those who
• 25:44
Speaker 1: know less. and a person's religious knowledge is not a
• 25:47
Speaker 1: license to become unjust or self-righteous. The greater the responsibility
• 25:51
Speaker 1: that comes with an ability, the more carefully that ability
• 25:54
Speaker 1: should be used. True humility does not require denying the
• 25:57
Speaker 1: gifts a person possesses. It requires recognizing that those gifts
• 26:01
Speaker 1: do not make the person independent of Allah or entitled
• 26:04
Speaker 1: to despise others. The tragedy of Iblis began when comparison
• 26:08
Speaker 1: became an excuse for rejecting the command. That is why
• 26:11
Speaker 1: this part of the story deserves serious reflection. Chapter 4.
• 26:15
Speaker 1: Why Knowledge Alone is Not Enough One of the most
• 26:17
Speaker 1: striking lessons of the story is that knowledge alone does
• 26:20
Speaker 1: not guarantee righteousness. A person may know many facts and
• 26:23
Speaker 1: still make an unjust decision. A person may understand a
• 26:26
Speaker 1: rule and still choose to violate it. A person may
• 26:29
Speaker 1: recognize the consequences of wrongdoing and still proceed because personal
• 26:33
Speaker 1: desire seems more important. Knowledge provides information, but the way
• 26:37
Speaker 1: that knowledge is used also depends upon a person's choices, intentions,
• 26:41
Speaker 1: and willingness to accept what is right. In the account
• 26:44
Speaker 1: of Adam's creation, Allah taught Adam the names. The angels
• 26:47
Speaker 1: acknowledged the limits of their knowledge. Iblis, however, used his
• 26:51
Speaker 1: own judgment to justify refusing the command. These events reveal
• 26:55
Speaker 1: a crucial distinction. Knowledge should lead a person toward a
• 26:58
Speaker 1: more accurate understanding of reality. It should not become a
• 27:01
Speaker 1: tool for protecting arrogance. When people become proud of what
• 27:04
Speaker 1: they know, they may stop asking questions. They may interpret
• 27:07
Speaker 1: correction as humiliation. They may reject information that challenges their assumptions.
• 27:12
Speaker 1: and they may use intelligence to construct increasingly complicated excuses
• 27:16
Speaker 1: for decisions they do not want to reconsider. The result
• 27:19
Speaker 1: is a strange contradiction. The more knowledge a person possesses,
• 27:23
Speaker 1: the more opportunities that person may have to understand a mistake.
• 27:27
Speaker 1: Yet if pride controls the heart, knowledge may be used
• 27:29
Speaker 1: to defend the mistake instead. This does not mean that
• 27:32
Speaker 1: learning is dangerous. Islamic teachings place great importance on beneficial knowledge.
• 27:37
Speaker 1: The lesson is that knowledge should be accompanied by humility
• 27:40
Speaker 1: and responsibility. A knowledgeable person should be willing to distinguish
• 27:44
Speaker 1: between established facts and uncertain claims. A responsible teacher should
• 27:48
Speaker 1: not present guesses as unquestionable truth. A thoughtful student should
• 27:52
Speaker 1: be willing to revise an incorrect understanding when reliable evidence
• 27:56
Speaker 1: becomes available. And a person who receives advice should consider
• 28:00
Speaker 1: its truth rather than rejecting it simply because it challenges
• 28:03
Speaker 1: personal pride. The story of Iblis reminds us that the
• 28:06
Speaker 1: ability to reason does not give us permission to make
• 28:09
Speaker 1: ourselves the ultimate authority over right and wrong. Human reasoning
• 28:13
Speaker 1: is valuable, but it has limits. The Quranic account places
• 28:16
Speaker 1: the command of Allah above Iblis' personal comparison. That is
• 28:20
Speaker 1: the central issue. Iblis was not entitled to replace divine
• 28:23
Speaker 1: instruction with his own judgment. And human beings should not
• 28:27
Speaker 1: use intelligence as an excuse to dismiss moral responsibility. The
• 28:31
Speaker 1: most beneficial knowledge is not merely knowledge that makes a
• 28:33
Speaker 1: person impressive in the eyes of others. It is knowledge
• 28:36
Speaker 1: that helps a person recognize truth, act responsibly, and understand
• 28:40
Speaker 1: the limits of personal understanding. Chapter 5 The Request for
• 28:44
Speaker 1: Respite After his refusal, Iblis asked Allah to grant him.
• 28:47
Speaker 2: Respite until the day when humanity would be resurrected.
• 28:50
Speaker 1: The Quran describes Allah granting him respite until an appointed time.
• 28:54
Speaker 1: This moment must be understood carefully. Being granted respite did
• 28:58
Speaker 1: not mean that Iblis' argument had been accepted as correct.
• 29:01
Speaker 1: It did not mean that his disobedience had become justified,
• 29:04
Speaker 1: and it did not mean that he had escaped the
• 29:06
Speaker 1: authority of Allah. He remained a created being. His continued
• 29:10
Speaker 1: existence occurred within the limits established by his creator. The
• 29:13
Speaker 1: request for respite also marked a new stage in the story.
• 29:16
Speaker 1: Iblis did not respond to his wrongdoing by seeking forgiveness. Instead,
• 29:20
Speaker 1: he declared an intention to mislead humanity. His hostility toward
• 29:24
Speaker 1: human beings became part of the Quranic account of his rebellion.
• 29:27
Speaker 1: The story now moved beyond a single act of refusal.
• 29:31
Speaker 1: Iblis announced that he would attempt to turn human beings
• 29:33
Speaker 1: away from the straight path. This declaration would become important
• 29:36
Speaker 1: to every generation that followed. But there is a question
• 29:39
Speaker 1: worth considering. Why is the granting of respite significant? The
• 29:43
Speaker 1: Quranic account makes clear that the world is not governed
• 29:46
Speaker 1: by the immediate desires of created beings. Iblis could ask,
• 29:49
Speaker 1: he could make declarations, he could express hostility, but he
• 29:53
Speaker 1: could not determine the ultimate structure of reality through his
• 29:56
Speaker 1: own will. His existence remained within the authority of Allah.
• 29:59
Speaker 1: The respite granted to him did not place him on
• 30:02
Speaker 1: equal terms with his Creator. It established a period in
• 30:05
Speaker 1: which the events of the human story would unfold, while
• 30:08
Speaker 1: Iblis continued his attempt to mislead people. For believers, this
• 30:12
Speaker 1: is a reminder that the existence of evil does not
• 30:14
Speaker 1: mean that Allah has lost control of creation. The presence
• 30:18
Speaker 1: of temptation does not mean that truth has disappeared. And
• 30:21
Speaker 1: the continuation of a person's wrongdoing does not mean that
• 30:24
Speaker 1: the wrongdoing has become acceptable. The Quranic account of Iblis
• 30:28
Speaker 1: must therefore be read within the broader understanding of divine
• 30:31
Speaker 1: sovereignty and human responsibility. Allah remains the Creator and Lord
• 30:35
Speaker 1: of all things. Iblis remains a created being, and humanity
• 30:39
Speaker 1: remains responsible for how it responds to the choices and
• 30:41
Speaker 1: temptations it faces. Chapter 6 The Declaration of Hostility After
• 30:46
Speaker 1: receiving respite, Iblis declared that he would mislead humanity. The
• 30:50
Speaker 1: Quran describes his determination to approach human beings from different
• 30:54
Speaker 1: directions and and turn them away from the straight path.
• 30:56
Speaker 1: His words reveal a deliberate intention. He would not simply
• 31:00
Speaker 1: continue living with the consequences of his own refusal. He
• 31:03
Speaker 1: would attempt to draw other beings toward disobedience. This is
• 31:06
Speaker 1: one of the most serious parts of his story. Iblis's
• 31:09
Speaker 1: arrogance had already led him to reject the command. Now
• 31:12
Speaker 1: he intended to encourage others to turn away from divine guidance.
• 31:16
Speaker 1: His declaration transformed his personal rebellion into an announced campaign
• 31:20
Speaker 1: of temptation. But Islamic teachings do not describe Iblis as
• 31:24
Speaker 1: a rival deity or an independent power equal to Allah.
• 31:27
Speaker 1: He cannot create a separate universe. He cannot escape divine authority.
• 31:31
Speaker 1: And his influence does not remove human responsibility. The Quran
• 31:35
Speaker 1: warns people about Satan's attempts to mislead them. It also
• 31:38
Speaker 1: teaches that Satan's call should not be followed. This distinction
• 31:42
Speaker 1: matters because temptation and compulsion are not identical. A person
• 31:46
Speaker 1: may encounter an invitation to do something wrong without being
• 31:49
Speaker 1: forced to accept it. A person may experience anger without
• 31:52
Speaker 1: being required to act violently. A person may feel jealousy
• 31:56
Speaker 1: without being required to harm someone else. A person may
• 31:59
Speaker 1: desire wealth without being required to acquire it dishonestly. Human
• 32:03
Speaker 1: beings must take their choices seriously. The existence of temptation
• 32:07
Speaker 1: does not excuse every decision made under its influence. At
• 32:10
Speaker 1: the same time, people should not assume that every hardship
• 32:13
Speaker 1: or mistake can be explained by a single unseen cause.
• 32:16
Speaker 1: Islamic teachings encourage believers to seek Allah's protection, follow guidance,
• 32:21
Speaker 1: and remain responsible for their actions. The story of Iblis
• 32:24
Speaker 1: warns humanity about the danger of accepting a misleading invitation
• 32:28
Speaker 1: simply because it appears attractive. A wrong action may initially
• 32:31
Speaker 1: seem convenient, a dishonest choice may appear profitable, an unjust
• 32:36
Speaker 1: response may feel satisfying in the moment, but immediate satisfaction
• 32:39
Speaker 1: does not establish that an action is right. The challenge
• 32:42
Speaker 1: is to recognize the difference between what is tempting and
• 32:45
Speaker 1: what is beneficial. between what is easy and what is just,
• 32:49
Speaker 1: and between what personal desire demands and what moral responsibility requires.
• 32:53
Speaker 1: Iblis's declared hostility makes this challenge an important part of
• 32:56
Speaker 1: the human story. Chapter 7 How Temptation Can Disguise Itself
• 33:01
Speaker 1: Temptation does not always appear in an obvious form. Sometimes
• 33:05
Speaker 1: a person recognizes wrongdoing immediately. At other times, a wrong
• 33:09
Speaker 1: choice becomes attractive because it is presented as an exception.
• 33:12
Speaker 1: A person may tell himself that a small lie does
• 33:15
Speaker 1: not matter. Another may believe that an unfair decision is
• 33:18
Speaker 1: justified because the victim is disliked. Someone may postpone a
• 33:22
Speaker 1: responsibility because there will supposedly be a better opportunity later.
• 33:26
Speaker 1: A person may refuse to apologize because the other individual should,
• 33:30
Speaker 1: in that person's opinion, apologize first. These examples are not
• 33:34
Speaker 1: direct quotations from the Quranic account of Iblis. They are
• 33:38
Speaker 1: ordinary illustrations of how people can justify choices that they
• 33:41
Speaker 1: already suspect are wrong. The connection to the story lies
• 33:44
Speaker 1: in the underlying danger. Pride and desire can influence judgment.
• 33:48
Speaker 1: They can encourage a person to focus on excuses rather
• 33:51
Speaker 1: than consequences, and they can make disobedience appear more reasonable
• 33:55
Speaker 1: than it truly is. This is why self-examination matters. A
• 33:59
Speaker 1: person should not assume that every desire is a reliable guide,
• 34:03
Speaker 1: nor should every confident thought be treated as proof that
• 34:05
Speaker 1: a decision is correct. Sometimes the most important question is not,
• 34:09
Speaker 1: can I find a reason to do this? It is,
• 34:12
Speaker 1: am I searching honestly for what is right, or am
• 34:14
Speaker 1: I searching for an excuse to do what I already want?
• 34:16
Speaker 1: That question can reveal a great deal. If someone is
• 34:19
Speaker 1: determined to justify an action, almost any circumstance can become
• 34:22
Speaker 1: an excuse. But if someone genuinely wants to act responsibly,
• 34:26
Speaker 1: that person will consider the rights of others, the likely consequences,
• 34:30
Speaker 1: and the guidance that applies to the situation. The Quranic
• 34:33
Speaker 1: story of Iblis encourages believers to remain alert to the
• 34:36
Speaker 1: dangers of arrogance and deception. It does not require people
• 34:40
Speaker 1: to imagine that every ordinary difficulty is caused by a
• 34:43
Speaker 1: dramatic supernatural event. Instead, it directs attention toward faith, moral responsibility,
• 34:48
Speaker 1: and the need to resist the invitation to wrongdoing. The
• 34:51
Speaker 1: most important response is not panic, it is awareness. A
• 34:54
Speaker 1: believer should seek Allah's protection, remember the consequences of disobedience,
• 34:58
Speaker 1: and strive to choose what is right. Chapter 8 The
• 35:01
Speaker 1: Limits of Satan's Power The story of Iblis can easily
• 35:05
Speaker 1: be misunderstood if his declared hostility is separated from the
• 35:08
Speaker 1: rest of Islamic teaching. His intention to mislead humanity is
• 35:11
Speaker 1: real within the Quranic account, but his power is not unlimited.
• 35:15
Speaker 1: He is not equal to Allah, he is not the
• 35:17
Speaker 1: master of creation, and he does not possess the authority
• 35:20
Speaker 1: to force every human being to obey him. The Quran
• 35:23
Speaker 1: repeatedly calls people to recognize Allah's sovereignty and warns them
• 35:27
Speaker 1: against following Satan. It also describes the consequences of choosing
• 35:31
Speaker 1: to follow falsehood. In Surah Ibrahim, the Quran records Satan's
• 35:35
Speaker 1: declaration to his followers on the Day of Judgment. He
• 35:38
Speaker 1: acknowledges that he called them and that they responded to
• 35:40
Speaker 1: his invitation while denying that he possessed compelling authority over them.
• 35:45
Speaker 1: This passage emphasizes a vital principle. The invitation to wrongdoing
• 35:49
Speaker 1: does not erase the responsibility of those who choose to
• 35:52
Speaker 1: follow it. A person cannot simply blame every decision on
• 35:55
Speaker 1: temptation while refusing to examine personal choices. Responsibility remains important,
• 36:01
Speaker 1: This does not mean that temptation is always easy to resist.
• 36:04
Speaker 1: Human beings experience weakness, emotion, social pressure, and conflicting desires.
• 36:09
Speaker 1: Some situations are difficult. Some decisions require patience and courage.
• 36:14
Speaker 1: But the possibility of difficulty does not mean that moral
• 36:16
Speaker 1: choice has become meaningless. Islamic teaching encourages people to seek
• 36:20
Speaker 1: help from Allah, avoid the paths that lead toward wrongdoing,
• 36:23
Speaker 1: and return to Him when they fall into error. Satan's
• 36:26
Speaker 1: declared hostility is a reason to remain cautious. It is
• 36:29
Speaker 1: not a reason to abandon hope. A believer should not
• 36:32
Speaker 1: imagine that the struggle against temptation is already lost. Nor
• 36:36
Speaker 1: should anyone believe that Satan possesses power equal to the
• 36:39
Speaker 1: power of Allah. The Creator remains supreme. The challenge for
• 36:42
Speaker 1: human beings is to respond to guidance rather than surrender
• 36:45
Speaker 1: to deception. Chapter 9 Why Arrogance Destroys Relationships Although Iblis'
• 36:50
Speaker 1: story concerns the unseen world, its warning about arrogance can
• 36:54
Speaker 1: be understood through everyday human experience. Arrogance damages relationships because
• 36:59
Speaker 1: it makes genuine understanding difficult. A person who believes he
• 37:02
Speaker 1: is always right has little reason to listen. A person
• 37:05
Speaker 1: who considers others inferior may dismiss their feelings. A person
• 37:09
Speaker 1: who cannot accept correction may repeatedly cause harm without acknowledging it.
• 37:13
Speaker 1: And a person who values reputation above truth may defend
• 37:17
Speaker 1: a mistake long after the mistake has become obvious. These
• 37:20
Speaker 1: attitudes create distance between people. Families suffer when pride prevents apologies.
• 37:25
Speaker 1: Friendships weaken when one person insists on winning every disagreement.
• 37:29
Speaker 1: Communities become unjust when powerful individuals refuse to listen to
• 37:33
Speaker 1: those who have less influence. In each situation, the problem
• 37:37
Speaker 1: grows when personal pride becomes more important than what is right.
• 37:40
Speaker 1: The story of Iblis offers a warning about this pattern.
• 37:43
Speaker 1: His comparison between fire and clay was used to justify refusal.
• 37:47
Speaker 1: He treated his own claimed superiority as more important than obedience.
• 37:52
Speaker 1: Human beings should therefore be cautious whenever pride begins to
• 37:55
Speaker 1: determine their decisions. A disagreement should be judged by its truth,
• 37:58
Speaker 1: not merely by who expressed it. A correction should be
• 38:01
Speaker 1: considered on its merits, not rejected because it feels uncomfortable.
• 38:05
Speaker 1: And an apology should not be treated as a defeat
• 38:07
Speaker 1: when it is the honest response to wrongdoing. Humility does
• 38:11
Speaker 1: not mean allowing everyone to control one's life. It does
• 38:14
Speaker 1: not mean accepting every accusation or abandoning reasonable judgment. It
• 38:18
Speaker 1: means being willing to recognize truth even when doing so
• 38:21
Speaker 1: challenges personal pride. It means understanding that no human being
• 38:25
Speaker 1: is above moral responsibility. And it means remembering that strength
• 38:28
Speaker 1: is not demonstrated only by the ability to win an argument.
• 38:32
Speaker 1: Sometimes strength is demonstrated by the willingness to admit an error.
• 38:36
Speaker 1: Chapter 10 The Warning for Every Generation The story of
• 38:39
Speaker 1: Iblis reaches far beyond the moment when he refused to
• 38:42
Speaker 1: prostrate before Adam. Its warning concerns the attitudes that can
• 38:45
Speaker 1: lead a person away from obedience. Pride can make a
• 38:48
Speaker 1: wrong choice appear justified. Comparison can become an excuse for contempt.
• 38:53
Speaker 1: Knowledge can be misused to defend personal desire. And a
• 38:56
Speaker 1: person who refuses to acknowledge wrongdoing may continue along a
• 39:00
Speaker 1: destructive path. These lessons apply across generations. A ruler may
• 39:04
Speaker 1: become arrogant because of power. A wealthy person may begin
• 39:07
Speaker 1: to believe that money determines human worth. A scholar may
• 39:11
Speaker 1: become proud of knowledge. An ordinary individual may refuse to
• 39:14
Speaker 1: apologize because admitting an error feels embarrassing. The circumstances differ,
• 39:19
Speaker 1: but the underlying danger remains recognizable. When pride becomes more
• 39:23
Speaker 1: important than truth, the ability to make a responsible choice
• 39:26
Speaker 1: becomes weakened. This does not mean that every person who
• 39:29
Speaker 1: behaves arrogantly has the same status or fate as Iblis.
• 39:33
Speaker 1: Such a judgment would go beyond what we should claim.
• 39:35
Speaker 1: The lesson is that arrogance is a dangerous attitude that
• 39:38
Speaker 1: believers should struggle against. The Quran calls people toward humility
• 39:42
Speaker 1: before Allah, justice toward others, and recognition of their own
• 39:45
Speaker 1: dependence upon the Creator. Human beings do not become independent
• 39:49
Speaker 1: of Allah because they possess wealth, knowledge, physical strength, or
• 39:52
Speaker 1: social influence. All of these things exist within the limits
• 39:56
Speaker 1: of created life. They can be used for good or
• 39:58
Speaker 1: misused for harmful purposes. The responsibility lies in how they
• 40:02
Speaker 1: are used. The story of Iblis, therefore, encourages a person
• 40:05
Speaker 1: to ask several important questions. Am I willing to accept
• 40:09
Speaker 1: the truth when it challenges me? Do I judge people fairly,
• 40:12
Speaker 1: or do I look for reasons to consider myself superior?
• 40:15
Speaker 1: Do I use knowledge to understand or do I use
• 40:17
Speaker 1: it to protect my pride? When I make a mistake,
• 40:19
Speaker 1: do I seek correction or do I build excuses? These
• 40:22
Speaker 1: questions can be uncomfortable. But honest self-examination is more beneficial
• 40:26
Speaker 1: than pretending that pride never affects us. The purpose of
• 40:29
Speaker 1: the warning is not to make people despair. It is
• 40:32
Speaker 1: to encourage them to recognize danger before it becomes a
• 40:35
Speaker 1: settled attitude. Chapter 11 The Difference Between Pride and Dignity
• 40:39
Speaker 1: It is important to distinguish arrogance from personal dignity. A
• 40:43
Speaker 1: person can recognize personal rights without considering others inferior. A
• 40:47
Speaker 1: person can refuse injustice without becoming arrogant. A person can
• 40:51
Speaker 1: take pride in honest work without believing that wealth or
• 40:54
Speaker 1: achievement makes him superior to other people. The problem is
• 40:57
Speaker 1: not every form of confidence. The problem is the kind
• 41:00
Speaker 1: of arrogance that causes a person to reject truth and
• 41:03
Speaker 1: look down upon others. Iblees' argument reveals that distinction. He
• 41:07
Speaker 1: did not merely acknowledge that fire and clay were different.
• 41:10
Speaker 1: He used that difference to claim superiority and justify disobedience.
• 41:15
Speaker 1: His judgment became an excuse to reject the command of Allah.
• 41:18
Speaker 1: For human beings, the lesson is to recognize abilities and
• 41:21
Speaker 1: achievements without turning them into a basis for injustice. A
• 41:24
Speaker 1: skilled doctor should use knowledge to help patients, not to
• 41:27
Speaker 1: humiliate those who lack medical training. A teacher should use
• 41:31
Speaker 1: education to guide students, not to make them feel worthless.
• 41:34
Speaker 1: A successful business owner should treat workers fairly rather than
• 41:37
Speaker 1: assuming that financial success makes every personal decision correct. And
• 41:42
Speaker 1: a person who has studied religion should approach knowledge with
• 41:45
Speaker 1: responsibility rather than using it as a reason to look
• 41:48
  Speaker 1: down upon others.
• 41:49
Speaker 2: The distinction is not always easy.
• 41:51
Speaker 1: Pride can disguise itself as confidence, contempt can disguise itself
• 41:55
Speaker 1: as honesty, and selfishness can disguise itself as a defense
• 41:58
Speaker 1: of personal rights. That is why intention and conduct both
• 42:02
Speaker 1: deserve careful examination. Does confidence help a person act responsibly,
• 42:06
Speaker 1: or does it become a reason to ignore the dignity
• 42:09
Speaker 1: of others? Does knowledge lead toward greater fairness? Or does
• 42:12
Speaker 1: it become a tool for controlling people? Does personal success
• 42:15
Speaker 1: encourage gratitude? Or does it lead toward the belief that
• 42:18
Speaker 1: others deserve less respect? The story of Iblis invites reflection
• 42:22
Speaker 1: on these questions. Its warning is not limited to a
• 42:25
Speaker 1: particular historical setting. It concerns a danger that can arise
• 42:28
Speaker 1: wherever pride is allowed to overrule truth. Chapter 12 The
• 42:32
Speaker 1: Importance of Repentance One of the most important contrasts in
• 42:35
Speaker 1: the early story of humanity concerns the response to wrongdoing.
• 42:39
Speaker 1: Iblis refused the command and defended his refusal through arrogance.
• 42:43
Speaker 1: The Quran later describes Adam and his wife in connection
• 42:46
Speaker 1: with a mistake and their turning toward Allah. The details
• 42:49
Speaker 1: of Adam's experience belong to another part of the series,
• 42:52
Speaker 1: but the broader contrast is worth recognizing. A mistake and
• 42:56
Speaker 1: a refusal to repent are not identical. Repentance requires honesty.
• 43:00
Speaker 1: A person must acknowledge wrongdoing rather than insisting that every
• 43:04
Speaker 1: action was correct. Repentance also requires turning back toward Allah
• 43:07
Speaker 1: rather than treating personal desire as the final authority. Human
• 43:11
Speaker 1: beings may fall into error. They may fail to control
• 43:14
Speaker 1: their anger, neglect responsibilities, or make decisions they later regret.
• 43:18
Speaker 1: The appropriate response is not to pretend that the wrongdoing
• 43:21
Speaker 1: never occurred, nor is it to assume that a mistake
• 43:24
Speaker 1: makes improvement impossible. Islamic teaching emphasizes the importance of seeking
• 43:29
Speaker 1: forgiveness and returning to the right path. This provides hope
• 43:32
Speaker 1: without making wrongdoing insignificant. A person who has harmed someone
• 43:36
Speaker 1: should take responsibility and, where appropriate, attempt to repair the harm.
• 43:40
Speaker 1: A person who has spoken falsely should strive to correct
• 43:43
Speaker 1: the falsehood. A person who has neglected an obligation should
• 43:46
Speaker 1: work to fulfill it. And a person who recognizes arrogance
• 43:49
Speaker 1: should seek to replace it with humility. The story of
• 43:52
Speaker 1: Iblis warns against defending disobedience. The broader Islamic teaching about
• 43:57
Speaker 1: repentance encourages people not to despair when they recognize their
• 44:00
Speaker 1: own failures. These principles work together. People should take wrongdoing seriously,
• 44:05
Speaker 1: but they should also recognize the possibility of changing their
• 44:08
Speaker 1: conduct and seeking Allah's forgiveness. The danger is not simply
• 44:12
Speaker 1: that a person can make a mistake. The danger is
• 44:14
Speaker 1: that pride may persuade the person never to admit it.
• 44:17
Speaker 1: Chapter 13 The Human Struggle Against Arrogance The human struggle
• 44:21
Speaker 1: against arrogance often begins with small decisions. A person receives
• 44:25
Speaker 1: criticism and must decide whether to consider it honestly. Someone
• 44:29
Speaker 1: else succeeds and must decide whether to respond with gratitude, inspiration,
• 44:33
Speaker 1: or jealousy. A disagreement occurs and each person must decide
• 44:37
Speaker 1: whether the goal is to understand the truth or simply
• 44:39
Speaker 1: to win. An apology becomes necessary and pride attempts to
• 44:43
Speaker 1: make the apology feel like humiliation. These ordinary situations reveal
• 44:47
Speaker 1: how a person's character develops over time. Arrogance does not
• 44:51
Speaker 1: always announce itself dramatically. Sometimes it appears through the refusal
• 44:55
Speaker 1: to listen. Sometimes it appears through the assumption that other
• 44:58
Speaker 1: people's feelings do not matter. Sometimes it appears through a
• 45:01
Speaker 1: constant need to be praised. And sometimes it appears through
• 45:05
Speaker 1: the inability to admit that someone else may be correct.
• 45:08
Speaker 1: The story of Iblis offers a warning about allowing such
• 45:10
Speaker 1: attitudes to become established. He compared his origin with Adam's
• 45:14
Speaker 1: and used the comparison to justify disobedience. The lesson for
• 45:18
Speaker 1: humanity is not to repeat the same underlying error in
• 45:21
Speaker 1: different circumstances. Do not use an advantage as an excuse
• 45:24
Speaker 1: for contempt. Do not use intelligence as an excuse to
• 45:28
Speaker 1: reject correction. Do not use social position as an excuse
• 45:31
Speaker 1: to ignore justice. And do not allow personal pride to
• 45:34
Speaker 1: become more important than obedience to Allah. Humility is not
• 45:38
Speaker 1: achieved through a single declaration. It develops through choices. A
• 45:41
Speaker 1: person practices humility by listening carefully, acknowledging mistakes, respecting others,
• 45:46
Speaker 1: and remaining willing to learn. A person practices humility by
• 45:50
Speaker 1: remembering that every ability is limited and every created life
• 45:54
Speaker 1: depends upon Allah. And a person practices humility by refusing
• 45:57
Speaker 1: to turn success into an excuse for treating others unjustly.
• 46:01
Speaker 1: The story of Iblis remains a powerful warning because it
• 46:04
Speaker 1: demonstrates what happens when pride is allowed to become the
• 46:07
Speaker 1: basis of a decision. It also encourages people to examine
• 46:10
Speaker 1: their own choices before harmful attitudes become deeply rooted. Chapter 14,
• 46:15
Speaker 1: The Meaning of the Story. We have now examined the
• 46:17
Speaker 1: central themes of Iblis' refusal. He compared fire with clay,
• 46:21
Speaker 1: he claimed superiority over Adam, he refused the command of Allah,
• 46:25
Speaker 1: he requested respite until an appointed time, and he declared
• 46:28
Speaker 1: his intention to mislead humanity. These are the principal events
• 46:31
Speaker 1: established in the Quranic account. Beyond them, many details about
• 46:35
Speaker 1: the earliest history of the unseen world remain unknown or
• 46:39
Speaker 1: are discussed in reports of varying reliability. A responsible telling
• 46:43
Speaker 1: of the story should not invent certainty where reliable evidence
• 46:46
Speaker 1: does not establish it. The power of the account lies
• 46:49
Speaker 1: in what it teaches. Iblis's downfall demonstrates the danger of arrogance.
• 46:53
Speaker 1: His argument reveals how comparison can become an excuse for disobedience.
• 46:57
Speaker 1: His declaration of hostility warns humanity to remain alert to temptation.
• 47:02
Speaker 1: And the Quran's broader teachings remind people that Satan does
• 47:05
Speaker 1: not possess power equal to Allah and that human beings
• 47:08
Speaker 1: remain responsible for their choices. These lessons form the foundation
• 47:11
Speaker 1: of the story. The central issue is not whether fire
• 47:14
Speaker 1: or clay should be considered more impressive by human standards.
• 47:18
Speaker 1: The central issue is that Iblis used his own judgment
• 47:21
Speaker 1: to reject the command of his creator. He allowed pride
• 47:24
Speaker 1: to determine his response. And rather than turning back from
• 47:27
Speaker 1: his wrongdoing, he announced his intention to mislead others. The
• 47:30
Speaker 1: result was a story that would become a warning to humanity.
• 47:33
Speaker 1: It reminds us that knowledge must be accompanied by humility.
• 47:36
Speaker 1: That confidence must not become arrogance. That temptation does not
• 47:40
Speaker 1: remove responsibility. And that a person should not allow pride
• 47:44
Speaker 1: to prevent the recognition of truth. The creation of Adam
• 47:47
Speaker 1: had introduced a new chapter in the story of creation.
• 47:49
Speaker 1: Iblis's refusal revealed the danger that would accompany humanity's moral choices,
• 47:54
Speaker 1: but the human story was still unfolding.
• 47:56
Speaker 2: Adam had been created.
• 47:58
Speaker 1: The command concerning him had exposed Iblis's arrogance, and the
• 48:02
Speaker 1: events that followed would establish the setting for the first
• 48:04
Speaker 1: human experience of life in paradise. That story deserves its
• 48:08
Speaker 1: own chapter. It will explore the next stage of Adam's
• 48:11
Speaker 1: journey without repeating the events of his creation or the
• 48:13
Speaker 1: details of Iblis's refusal. For now, one lesson remains clear.
• 48:17
Speaker 1: The greatest danger in Iblis' story was not simply the
• 48:20
Speaker 1: difference between fire and clay. It was the pride that
• 48:23
Speaker 1: caused him to believe his own judgment mattered more than
• 48:26
Speaker 1: the command of Allah. And that is the warning every
• 48:29
Speaker 1: generation must remember. End of Episode 2, Part 2, The
• 48:32
Speaker 1: Pride That Destroyed Iblis. Next, Episode 3, Part 1, Adam
• 48:36
  Speaker 1: in Paradise.
