- 0:43Speaker 3: What are you guys doing.
- 0:44Speaker 4: Hanging in there?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Man?
- 0:45Speaker 4: Hanging in there getting ready for another really big game
- 0:48Speaker 4: this weekend with the Broncos. But Jeff, this is a
- 0:53Speaker 4: We're about to enter a really important stretch that should
- 0:55Speaker 4: tell us a lot about this football team, aren't we.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Well.
- 0:59Speaker 3: I mean, their chances of making the playoffs are really
- 1:02Speaker 3: good no matter what happens. But this is all about
- 1:07Speaker 3: the number one seed and you know, home down all
- 1:09Speaker 3: the home games you want for the playoffs, and we've
- 1:14Speaker 3: known in the past here that's that's a big deal.
- 1:17Speaker 3: And and I think they definitely have their toughest stretch
- 1:22Speaker 3: of games that are the most important, and maybe that's
- 1:26Speaker 3: the way it should be if you're really going to
- 1:28Speaker 3: find out about what what this team is. I mean,
- 1:31Speaker 3: you've got three nine win teams waiting for him, you
- 1:34Speaker 3: got four former first round picks at quarterback waiting for him,
- 1:40Speaker 3: and you know, one of the best defensive players in
- 1:43Speaker 3: the league coming to town, you know Sundays. So you
- 1:48Speaker 3: know they've they've sort of shown the profile of a
- 1:52Speaker 3: team that gets it done all year. But this is
- 1:55Speaker 3: the this is a stretch of four games that where
- 1:57Speaker 3: they can really assert themselves as as the real number
- 2:01Speaker 3: one seat.
- 2:02Speaker 5: Jeffery couple of personnel moves this week. Looks like Ben
- 2:06Speaker 5: Powers is good to go return to practice. I think
- 2:09Speaker 5: Alex Bolchsky's done a wonderful job the last few weeks.
- 2:13Speaker 5: Do you make that transition now?
- 2:15Speaker 2: What what happens?
- 2:15Speaker 5: Does he get his job back?
- 2:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll be in I'll be intrigued to see. We
- 2:20Speaker 3: haven't we haven't seen a test for Sean Payton about
- 2:24Speaker 3: the whole you you don't lose your job through injury thing,
- 2:27Speaker 3: you know, Mike Shanahan used to make no bones about it.
- 2:30Speaker 3: He used to say, if if the guy who replaced
- 2:32Speaker 3: you plays better, he stays no matter what. So but
- 2:37Speaker 3: we don't know how Sean will treat this not you know,
- 2:39Speaker 3: I don't know how close Ben is right now. Yesterday
- 2:42Speaker 3: he was not fully involved in practice. It was limited,
- 2:46Speaker 3: and it was sort of a very limited uh thing.
- 2:49Speaker 3: So I'll see what it looks like today. But I
- 2:53Speaker 3: think they would put him back in the lineup at
- 2:56Speaker 3: some point. But uh again, I got to see his
- 3:00Speaker 3: participation go up a little bit before I think it'll be.
- 3:04Speaker 3: You know, I don't think it will be this week
- 3:06Speaker 3: unless they they shock me, you know, today and tomorrow.
- 3:09Speaker 5: Also, there are reports out there that Pap Bryant's got
- 3:12Speaker 5: a hammy. What do you know about Pat Bryan's vailability.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Well, he had it last week and he ended up
- 3:18Speaker 3: playing in the game, so I don't think that helped
- 3:20Speaker 3: him any uh So, he was limited two days last week.
- 3:24Speaker 3: I think he did it in practice on Thursday last week,
- 3:30Speaker 3: so I think he aggravated a little bit in the game.
- 3:32Speaker 3: He did not. He was not on the field at
- 3:34Speaker 3: all yesterday, So we have to see what today looks like.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Hey, Jeff, ut it reminded me that old adage versus
- 3:42Speaker 2: involved or committed. You know that old adage when it
- 3:45Speaker 2: comes to breakfast, the chicken is involved, but the pig
- 3:47Speaker 2: is committed.
- 3:47Speaker 5: Yeah, Mike Leach said that.
- 3:50Speaker 2: He did he say that? Yeah? Did Mike Leach say that? Yes?
- 3:53Speaker 1: He did.
- 3:53Speaker 2: That's it's it's an old great line. So we'll we'll
- 3:56Speaker 2: see how involved powers will be coming up on Sunday.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I look at here, and I say to myself, is
- 4:02Speaker 2: this why you bag those wins? You know, that's why
- 4:05Speaker 2: you eke it out against the Jets and you come
- 4:07Speaker 2: back against the Giants and whatnot. Because when you look
- 4:10Speaker 2: at the two easiest schedules, the Patriots have the easiest
- 4:13Speaker 2: one up to this point. The Broncos have the second
- 4:15Speaker 2: quote easiest one up to this point. But you bag
- 4:17Speaker 2: these wins because these last four can be a paint
- 4:19Speaker 2: in the tail a little bit.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Well yeah, and I you know, I know we all
- 4:24Speaker 3: roll our eyes when coaches and everybody say in September
- 4:28Speaker 3: they're all big and everything. What the Broncos have the
- 4:32Speaker 3: number one seed right now because the Patriots lost their
- 4:35Speaker 3: opener to the Raiders. So yeah, I mean, you get
- 4:41Speaker 3: all the wins you can. It's like insurance. You know,
- 4:44Speaker 3: you want it when you need it, and they will
- 4:48Speaker 3: need all of these wins if they're really going to
- 4:51Speaker 3: be the number one seed. I mean, I think there
- 4:53Speaker 3: are percentages of making the playoffs are way up over
- 4:56Speaker 3: ninety eight right now. So you're you're gonna be in
- 4:59Speaker 3: the playoff field. Well, now it's about how serious are
- 5:02Speaker 3: you about that playoff field? Because I think the Broncos
- 5:07Speaker 3: would much rather play anybody here than go on the
- 5:11Speaker 3: road against some of these teams.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Jeff, we started the show by asking the boys what
- 5:16Speaker 4: their expectations were since Vic before the year just said, hey,
- 5:20Speaker 4: get in the playoffs. Ten wins or so, that sounds
- 5:24Speaker 4: good for year two for bo Knicks. Mose was at
- 5:26Speaker 4: eleven and six. I was a little bit more bullish
- 5:28Speaker 4: at thirteen and four. But right now here we sit,
- 5:31Speaker 4: with the Broncos sitting atop the league, what are the expectations?
- 5:35Speaker 4: Is it super Bowl or bust.
- 5:37Speaker 3: I would never say that for a team because I
- 5:40Speaker 3: just you know, and I know that's sort of boring
- 5:43Speaker 3: and pragmatic. But I've been doing this a long time
- 5:46Speaker 3: and winning the Super Bowl is absolutely one of the
- 5:49Speaker 3: hardest things in team sports to do, and because it's
- 5:54Speaker 3: so based in the NFL, on who got hurt? You know,
- 5:57Speaker 3: one one four down section of a game can change
- 6:01Speaker 3: your whole season if two guys, if the right two guys,
- 6:06Speaker 3: get hurt on those plays. So uh, but I think
- 6:09Speaker 3: when you have the number one seed with a month
- 6:12Speaker 3: to go, I think that's the expectation you you finished
- 6:16Speaker 3: that out and you give yourself the best chance at
- 6:21Speaker 3: a super bowl or bust situation.
- 6:24Speaker 5: So let me get this straight. The Colts are looking
- 6:27Speaker 5: for an emergency quarterback. They call Sam Ellinger who played there,
- 6:32Speaker 5: who actually played there, and he said no. And he
- 6:35Speaker 5: said no, according to Sam, because he's comfortable here and
- 6:38Speaker 5: enjoys his situation here.
- 6:39Speaker 2: He's third string here.
- 6:41Speaker 5: How do you give up starting opportunity for third string?
- 6:45Speaker 3: Well, it tells me they the Colts didn't. You know,
- 6:49Speaker 3: Now I didn't. I didn't Parker Gabriel talk to Sam
- 6:53Speaker 3: that the Denver posts. Yep, Parker, Parker. Parker's great at
- 6:58Speaker 3: He's a good young guy in this big business. But
- 7:01Speaker 3: so I did not personally talk to Sam in the
- 7:03Speaker 3: locker room yesterday. But I do know that tells me
- 7:08Speaker 3: that the Colts weren't definitive about what they were offering it.
- 7:14Speaker 3: If it's just a roster spot then of course, or not,
- 7:19Speaker 3: of course. But I think he would be apt to
- 7:22Speaker 3: stay here because he sees what Zach Wilson got paid.
- 7:28Speaker 3: This is a good spot. People want to be here,
- 7:31Speaker 3: and you know, I think it tells me more about
- 7:35Speaker 3: how the Colts framed it to him, like come in
- 7:38Speaker 3: and you'll have a chance or something. But it tells
- 7:42Speaker 3: me they didn't definitively say you're going to start our
- 7:46Speaker 3: last four games, or you know, they could have said
- 7:50Speaker 3: if Riley Leonard's healthy, or you know, whatever it was.
- 7:55Speaker 3: But he obviously felt better about what was here. I
- 7:58Speaker 3: have talked to him this year about that, and he
- 8:01Speaker 3: has said it would take an awful lot for him
- 8:03Speaker 3: to go elsewhere.
- 8:04Speaker 2: But it would seem to me, if you want to play,
- 8:07Speaker 2: you're gonna have a good chance after That's.
- 8:09Speaker 3: What I mean. Yeah, Yeah, it tells me they the
- 8:12Speaker 3: Colts weren't if they said you're gonna start Sunday. I
- 8:17Speaker 3: have a hard time believing he stays here.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Agreed, the likelihood of the likelihood of getting good after
- 8:23Speaker 2: the first series in Seattle is probably pretty good, That's
- 8:26Speaker 2: what I'm saying. I think the poor filan still could
- 8:29Speaker 2: get smoked and then, like forty four years old, they're
- 8:31Speaker 2: going to drag him off with a winch on his
- 8:32Speaker 2: face mask, and then whoever is healthy behind him is
- 8:35Speaker 2: going to be able to play some football. I mean,
- 8:37Speaker 2: that's being facetious, but you understand what I'm saying.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I think maybe because he was there, maybe he
- 8:44Speaker 3: didn't like his you know, I don't. I can't speak
- 8:46Speaker 3: for him, but it tells me that the team he
- 8:50Speaker 3: spent a lot of time with called and he said no,
- 8:52Speaker 3: thank you. Yeah, so that maybe his experiences weren't spectacular.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Maybe he saw you know, if you've already lost to
- 9:05Speaker 3: two quarterbacks, you know, Riley Hunard and Daniel Jones to injury,
- 9:09Speaker 3: perhaps you don't protect the quarterback very well. And you
- 9:13Speaker 3: know that enters into.
- 9:14Speaker 5: It how the Broncos take care of their own here.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Oh well, I I was just gonna say, I've I've
- 9:21Speaker 3: spoken the gms in the league who say, just from
- 9:26Speaker 3: what they know about the new facility and how they
- 9:30Speaker 3: see things unfolding, there is a genuine not concern, but
- 9:35Speaker 3: that it's on the radar of gms all over the league.
- 9:39Speaker 3: That how they're doing business here, you know, locking up
- 9:43Speaker 3: with extensions because they have more cash than anybody else does.
- 9:48Speaker 3: They're going to have the best facility in the league
- 9:51Speaker 3: when it opens. Uh. I don't think anyone disputes that
- 9:57Speaker 3: they can have a bigger scouting staff, a bigger coaching staff.
- 10:03Speaker 3: They have one of the most expensive coaching staffs in
- 10:07Speaker 3: the league. There's no salary cap on luxury as it were.
- 10:12Speaker 3: If you want more scouts, you can have them. You
- 10:15Speaker 3: want more coaches, you can have them. You want more nutritionness,
- 10:19Speaker 3: you can have them. And they're going to have and
- 10:21Speaker 3: do have everything here. And people have.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Noticed I've sort of given up the ghost on Marvin
- 10:27Speaker 2: Mims as a wide out at this point. At this point, okay,
- 10:31Speaker 2: they seem pretty content with what they got. Maybe with
- 10:33Speaker 2: the Bryant situation, it will change Sunday. But Dan, when
- 10:37Speaker 2: you're talking about the Special Teams Player of the Week
- 10:40Speaker 2: again and this guy's ability to return the football, Jeff,
- 10:43Speaker 2: maybe I'm just gonna be satisfied with having him in
- 10:46Speaker 2: that particular role and being a pro bowler, Because I
- 10:50Speaker 2: forget who said it about a month ago when he
- 10:52Speaker 2: was injured. Was it brettor Vick or whatever. You don't
- 10:54Speaker 2: know what you got till it's gone, and when it's
- 10:56Speaker 2: back you're like, oh, yeah, got to have me some
- 10:58Speaker 2: of that.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Well, you know, I'm one who would say, until they
- 11:04Speaker 3: give him a legitimate look at wide receiver or any offense,
- 11:11Speaker 3: I'm always going to say I'd like him to use
- 11:14Speaker 3: him more. I mean, I don't. I don't see anything
- 11:17Speaker 3: in practice or training camp or ever out here that
- 11:23Speaker 3: would like make it so that he doesn't get touches
- 11:28Speaker 3: in the game. I don't understand why he doesn't get
- 11:31Speaker 3: more touches. They they can't convince me of why he
- 11:34Speaker 3: doesn't get more touches. Until he gets all those touches
- 11:39Speaker 3: and nothing happens, I'm always going to say I'd like
- 11:43Speaker 3: to see more in the offense. And it's again, it's
- 11:46Speaker 3: hard for me to believe that an offensive staff that has,
- 11:51Speaker 3: you know, been sort of always lauded for its its
- 11:55Speaker 3: creativity and ability to get guys open won't put that
- 11:59Speaker 3: guy on offense more. But for whatever reason, I think,
- 12:02Speaker 3: bottom line is Sean Payton likes bigger receivers and that's
- 12:06Speaker 3: that's just part of it. And you know, as a
- 12:10Speaker 3: vertically challenged human, that's that's something you can't really control.
- 12:14Speaker 3: And it's not really Marvin Mims's fault. He's not taller,
- 12:18Speaker 3: but I'm sure throwing the ball a lot more and
- 12:21Speaker 3: see what happens.
- 12:22Speaker 2: All right.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Last one from us in ESPN's Jeff Legwall is our guest.
- 12:27Speaker 4: I am wondering if there are any whispers now that
- 12:30Speaker 4: the stress is starting to ratchet up and the time
- 12:32Speaker 4: of year is what it is, are there any concerns
- 12:36Speaker 4: about this team's ability to play complimentary football in the
- 12:39Speaker 4: postseason from inside the locker room.
- 12:43Speaker 3: I don't think they have those kinds of concerns right now,
- 12:47Speaker 3: And if if they did, I'm not sure they'd you know,
- 12:50Speaker 3: players would voice that right now. You know that's something
- 12:54Speaker 3: post mortem. They might say, yeah, we were worried in
- 12:57Speaker 3: November or whatever. But I don't get a sense they're worried.
- 13:00Speaker 3: I think they think an awful lot of their ability
- 13:03Speaker 3: to to find just enough to win games. I think
- 13:07Speaker 3: they think that's part of their DNA. I will say
- 13:12Speaker 3: that I've covered a lot of teams, and this one
- 13:15Speaker 3: does sort of care about each other more than a
- 13:19Speaker 3: lot of teams. I've been around. They genuinely, they genuinely
- 13:23Speaker 3: care about what's happening, you know, to the other guys
- 13:26Speaker 3: in the locker room. So you know, is that worth
- 13:29Speaker 3: two points or one point or any points? I don't know,
- 13:32Speaker 3: but I do know the best teams I've ever seen
- 13:35Speaker 3: sort of have that quality.
- 13:37Speaker 5: I got one more Pro Bowl voting has opened up
- 13:40Speaker 5: fan voting, and I'm looking at some of the votes
- 13:42Speaker 5: coming in, and the Broncos clearly with that defense, they
- 13:45Speaker 5: got guys up there. Lufanga is number two among strong
- 13:49Speaker 5: safety Zach Allen is number two among defensive tackles. I'm
- 13:51Speaker 5: seeing Benito number two outside linebackers. What's interesting, Jeff, help
- 13:57Speaker 5: explain to me top ten corners, no Patricks certain on
- 14:02Speaker 5: that list.
- 14:03Speaker 3: I don't know. You know, it's like the guy one
- 14:06Speaker 3: defensive Player of the Year award, and everybody's now going
- 14:08Speaker 3: to try and convince us he's not very good. It's
- 14:12Speaker 3: ridiculous that there aren't two corners better than pats are ten,
- 14:16Speaker 3: let alone ten. So the guy's the best corner in football.
- 14:21Speaker 3: And I don't care how many times it gets flagged.
- 14:24Speaker 3: I don't care how many little stupid shallow crossers get
- 14:29Speaker 3: completed in front of them. That don't mean anything. The
- 14:32Speaker 3: guys are the best corner in football and I hope
- 14:35Speaker 3: people are enjoying him. I hope this isn't like a
- 14:39Speaker 3: Damerius Thomas situation, where the guy's one of the best
- 14:42Speaker 3: players I've ever seen and he isn't appreciated till he's
- 14:46Speaker 3: not in the Bronco uniform. Patser Tan is the best
- 14:50Speaker 3: corner in football, and I hope people enjoy watching him play.
- 14:53Speaker 4: That is ESPN's Jeff Legwall, brought to you by the
- 14:56Speaker 4: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers ibe W Local sixty eight.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Start with a job and with a career. Thank you, Jeff,
- 15:02Speaker 4: appreciate it man
- 15:04Speaker 2: Very exciting, Jeff, Thank you.
