Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Reuben Davidson: Labour's Spokesperson for technology and media on the under-16's social media ban
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: National's pushing your head. Was well, let's call it what
- 0:02Speaker 1: it is. It's a national idea, a national bill for
- 0:06Speaker 1: a social media band for under sixteens.
- 0:08Speaker 2: We won't get every single child off social media. Some
- 0:11Speaker 2: will always find ways around it, but frankly it's just
- 0:15Speaker 2: way too important not to at least try.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Act New Zealand first are agreed to disagree. Labor is
- 0:21Speaker 1: an open question. They've fired off seventy nine questions before
- 0:24Speaker 1: they'll get back at it and back to them. Ruben
- 0:27Speaker 1: Davidson as a Labor spokesperson for Technology and Media, Reuben, good.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Morning, good morning, right now you doing?
- 0:33Speaker 1: What do you think?
- 0:33Speaker 2: I'm good?
- 0:34Speaker 1: Thank you, Nice to have you on the show. What
- 0:35Speaker 1: did you think of that yesterday? Was that a bit
- 0:37Speaker 1: of a stunt?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Oh? Look, it was certainly an interesting turn of events,
- 0:42Speaker 2: wasn't it. I mean we've been going really hard to
- 0:46Speaker 2: work constructively with the Minister and with National and you know,
- 0:52Speaker 2: three years into this term and kind of three sitting
- 0:55Speaker 2: weeks out from the government wrapping up, they put on
- 1:00Speaker 2: yesterday's event. Ruben.
- 1:02Speaker 1: What I've seen the questions that you have sent to Labor,
- 1:05Speaker 1: and some of them are fear and good questions about,
- 1:08Speaker 1: you know, how do the operators actually make the checks
- 1:11Speaker 1: for people? But the second issue you raise is how
- 1:13Speaker 1: does the bill uphold to titity or white toungy? What
- 1:17Speaker 1: what has this got to do with the tity or
- 1:19Speaker 1: white tungy?
- 1:21Speaker 2: I mean, we know that from from our reading of
- 1:24Speaker 2: the bill and from knowing how people are affected by
- 1:27Speaker 2: some of the harms that happen on social media, we
- 1:29Speaker 2: know that what we need is a is a law
- 1:32Speaker 2: that takes some New Zealand specific considerations into account. How
- 1:37Speaker 2: would you do that would be how would you do
- 1:42Speaker 2: What we're seeing is that the bill seemingly hasn't considered
- 1:45Speaker 2: that at all. But how would you want the points
- 1:48Speaker 2: of that?
- 1:49Speaker 1: Okay? But how would you make a treaty specific proposal
- 1:52Speaker 1: or ban? What does it even mean?
- 1:57Speaker 2: Sure? So what you'd do is you would you would
- 2:00Speaker 2: gives consideration to the treaty and how that bill is prepared.
- 2:04Speaker 2: And there's there's a number of other considerations that are
- 2:08Speaker 2: that are unique or specific to the New Zealand context
- 2:11Speaker 2: that that the bill just has hasn't hasn't addressed, which
- 2:15Speaker 2: is but how would a many questions different we had
- 2:17Speaker 2: on the head on the bill.
- 2:19Speaker 1: But how your second one is about the treaty, which
- 2:21Speaker 1: I just thought was interesting. How how would it be different?
- 2:24Speaker 1: Would you ban only like non Maldi children. I mean,
- 2:27Speaker 1: I don't understand.
- 2:29Speaker 2: No, I don't think we're talking about that at all.
- 2:31Speaker 2: We're talking about is making sure that what we've got
- 2:34Speaker 2: is a bill that is not just lifted from what
- 2:37Speaker 2: some other countries have been doing with you know, some success,
- 2:41Speaker 2: but that will have a bill that is actually designed
- 2:44Speaker 2: to work in the very specific New Zealand content and is.
- 2:48Speaker 1: The so the bill that as you currently read it
- 2:51Speaker 1: is not that you're saying you will not support what
- 2:53Speaker 1: they've put forward. You're going to have to do some
- 2:55Speaker 1: talking after the election, presumably.
- 2:59Speaker 2: So we have a number of questions remaining and we've
- 3:02Speaker 2: requested to see a number of documents. We sent those
- 3:06Speaker 2: requests through end of last week, heard nothing from the minister,
- 3:12Speaker 2: and then received something late last night, you know, hours
- 3:16Speaker 2: after yesterday's big reveal.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Oh what did they say?
- 3:22Speaker 2: Oh well, you know, it was late last night. Still
- 3:25Speaker 2: working through the questions, Please to have answers to some
- 3:28Speaker 2: of the issues we raised. Pleased also to have some
- 3:31Speaker 2: of the additional points that we've raised around things like
- 3:35Speaker 2: tile impact assessments about privacy impacts and then these are
- 3:39Speaker 2: pretty meaty issues. The Minister herself yesterday talked about. You
- 3:44Speaker 2: know that these platforms are designed. They're not designed by accident.
- 3:48Speaker 2: They're designed by some of the smartest people on the planet.
- 3:53Speaker 2: So what we need to make sure that the legislation
- 3:55Speaker 2: is as well.
- 3:56Speaker 1: And that's fair to say. They've given you some documents
- 4:00Speaker 1: last night. It's going to take you, guys a while
- 4:02Speaker 1: to You're not going to have an answer today, are you.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Oli. I don't I don't expect to be able to
- 4:08Speaker 2: keep through all of all of you know what we
- 4:10Speaker 2: got back late last night. All right, on a Tuesday.
- 4:15Speaker 1: We'll check back in with the ones you've had a
- 4:17Speaker 1: chance Ruben Davidson from Labor For more.
