- 0:00Ezekiel chapter 16. First, let's pray.
- 0:04Dear Lord, please be with us as we read through this chapter and
- 0:08let our eyes be opened and our hearts be opened.
- 0:11To what you have to say, we ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:17This is titled in my study Bible Jerusalem.
- 0:20As an adulterous wife, the word of the Lord came to me.
- 0:25Son of Man, confront Jerusalem with her detestable practices
- 0:30and say this is what the sovereign Lord says to
- 0:34Jerusalem. Your ancestry and birth were in
- 0:38the land of the Canaanites. Your father was an Amorite and
- 0:42your mother a Hittite. I'm going to pause there for a
- 0:46minute because that caused me to look up a bunch of.
- 0:50Stuff which I will share at the very end of.
- 0:53This study I will read through the chapter, go through the
- 0:57study, Bibles, questions and answers, and then at the end
- 1:00I'll go over things that I found when I was looking up things.
- 1:04All interesting. I mean, if you're curious like
- 1:06me about more information, then stay till the end or Fast
- 1:10forward to the end. So verse 4, on the day you were
- 1:14born, your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to
- 1:21make you clean, nor were you rubbed with salt or wrapped in
- 1:25clothes. No, no one looked on you with
- 1:29pity or had compassion enough to do any of these things for you.
- 1:34Rather you were thrown out into the open field, for on the day
- 1:39you were born you were despised. Then I passed by and saw you
- 1:45kicking about in your blood. As you lay there in your blood I
- 1:49said to you, live. I made you grow like a plant of
- 1:53the field. You grew and developed and
- 1:56entered puberty. Your breast had formed and your
- 1:59hair had grown, yet you were stark naked.
- 2:02Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you
- 2:06were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment
- 2:10over you and covered your naked body.
- 2:13I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with
- 2:17you, declares the Sovereign Lord, and you became mine.
- 2:23I bathed you with water and washed the blood from you and
- 2:27put anointments on you. I clothed you with an
- 2:31embroidered dress and put sandals of fine leather on you.
- 2:35I dressed you in fine linen and covered you with costly
- 2:39garments. I adorned you with jewelry.
- 2:41I put bracelets on your arms and a necklace around your neck, and
- 2:46I put a ring on your nose, earrings on your ears, and a
- 2:49beautiful crown on your head. So you were adorned with gold
- 2:53and silver. Your clothes were of fine linen
- 2:56and costly fabric and embroidered cloth.
- 2:59Your food was honey, olive oil, and the finest flower.
- 3:03You became very beautiful and rose to be a queen, and your
- 3:08fame spread among the nations on account of your beauty, because
- 3:13the splendor I had given you made your beauty perfect,
- 3:19declares the Sovereign Lord. But you trusted in your beauty
- 3:25and used your fame to become a prostitute.
- 3:30You lavished your favors on anyone who passed by, and your
- 3:33beauty became his. You took some of your garments
- 3:37to make gaudy high places where you carried on your
- 3:41prostitution. You went to him, and he
- 3:45possessed your beauty. You also took the fine jewelry I
- 3:49gave you, the jewelry made of my gold and silver, and you made
- 3:53for yourself male idols and engaged in prostitution with
- 3:58them. And you took your embroidered
- 4:00clothes to put on them, and you offered my oil and incense
- 4:05before them. Also the food I provided for
- 4:10you, the flower, olive oil and honey I gave you to eat, you
- 4:14offered as fragrant incense before them.
- 4:18That is what happened, declares the Sovereign Lord.
- 4:22And you took your sons and daughters, whom you bore to me,
- 4:26and sacrificed them as food to the idols.
- 4:31Was your prostitution not enough?
- 4:33You slaughtered my children and sacrificed them to idols.
- 4:38In all your detestable practices and your prostitution, you did
- 4:43not remember the days of your youth when you were naked and
- 4:46bare, kicking about in your blood.
- 4:48Woe, woe to you, declares the sovereign Lord.
- 4:53In addition to all other wickedness, you built a mound
- 4:58for yourself and made a lofty shrine.
- 5:02In every public square. At every street corner you built
- 5:07your lofty shrines and degraded your beauty, spreading your legs
- 5:11with increasing promiscuity to anyone who passed by.
- 5:15You engaged in prostitution with the Egyptians, your neighbors
- 5:20with large genitals, and aroused my anger with your increasing
- 5:25promiscuity. So I stretched out my hand
- 5:28against you and reduced your territory.
- 5:32I gave you over to the greed, to the greed of your enemies, the
- 5:38daughters of the Philistines, who were shocked by your lewd
- 5:43conduct. You engaged in prostitutions
- 5:46with the Assyrians too, because you were insatiable, and even
- 5:51after that you still were not satisfied.
- 5:55Then you increased your promiscuity to include
- 5:59Babylonia, a land of merchants, but even with this you were not
- 6:05satisfied. I am filled with fury against
- 6:10you, declares the Sovereign Lord, when you do all these
- 6:13things, acting like a brazen prostitute.
- 6:18When you built your mounds at every street corner and made
- 6:21your lofty shrines in every public square, You were unlike a
- 6:25prostitute because you scorned payment, you adulterous wife.
- 6:31You prefer strangers to your own husband.
- 6:35All prostitutes received gifts, but you give gifts to all your
- 6:40lovers, bribing them to come to you from everywhere for your
- 6:44illicit favors. So in your prostitution, you are
- 6:48the opposite of others. No one runs after you for your
- 6:53favors. You are the very opposite, for
- 6:56you give payment and none is given to you.
- 7:01Therefore you prostitute, hear the word of the Lord.
- 7:04This is what the Sovereign Lord says, because you poured out
- 7:07your lust and exposed your naked body, in your promiscuity with
- 7:11your lovers, and because of all your detestable idols, and
- 7:15because you gave them your children's blood.
- 7:19Therefore, I am going to gather all your lovers with whom you
- 7:24found pleasure, those you loved as well as those you hated.
- 7:29I will gather them against you from all around and will strip
- 7:34you in front of them and they will see you stark naked.
- 7:39I will sentence you to the punishment of women who commit
- 7:43adultery and who shed blood. I will bring on you the blood
- 7:49vengeance of my wrath and jealous anger.
- 7:53Then I will deliver you into the hands of your lovers, and they
- 7:57will tear down your mounds and destroy your lofty shrines.
- 8:01They will strip you of your clothes and take your fine
- 8:04jewelry and leave you stark naked.
- 8:07They will bring a mob against you who will stone you and hack
- 8:11you to pieces with their swords. They will burn down your houses
- 8:16and inflict punishment on you in the sight of many women.
- 8:21I will put a stop to your prostitution and you will no
- 8:25longer pay your lovers. Then my wrath against you will
- 8:30subside and my jealous anger will turn away from you.
- 8:34I will be calm and no longer angry because you did not
- 8:38remember the days of your youth but enraged me with all these
- 8:43things. I will surely bring down on your
- 8:46head what you have done, declares the Sovereign Lord.
- 8:50Did you not add lewdness to all your other detestable practices?
- 8:55Everyone who who quotes Proverbs will quote this proverb about
- 9:01you. Like mother, like daughter.
- 9:04You are a true daughter of your mother who despised her husband
- 9:08and her children, and you are a true sister of your sisters who
- 9:13despised their husbands and their children.
- 9:16Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.
- 9:21Your older sister was Samaria, who lived to the north of you
- 9:27with her daughters, and your younger sister who lived to the
- 9:30South of you with her daughters, was Sodom.
- 9:35You not only followed their ways and copied their detestable
- 9:38practices, but in all your ways you soon became more depraved
- 9:44than they. As surely as I live, declares
- 9:47the Sovereign Lord, your sister Sodom and her daughters never
- 9:52did what you and your daughters have done.
- 9:55Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom.
- 10:00She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and
- 10:03unconcerned. They did not help the poor and
- 10:07needy. They were haughty and did
- 10:09detestable things before me. Therefore, I did away with them.
- 10:13As you have seen, Samaria did not commit half the sins you
- 10:18did. You have done more detestable
- 10:21things than they, and have made your sisters seem righteous.
- 10:25By all the things you have done, bear your disgrace, for you have
- 10:29furnished some justification for your sisters.
- 10:33Because your sins were more vile than theirs, they appear more
- 10:38righteous than you. So then be ashamed and bear your
- 10:41disgrace, for you have made your sisters appear righteous.
- 10:46However, I will restore the fortunes of Sodom and her
- 10:52daughters, and of Samaria and her daughters and your fortunes
- 10:59along with them, so that you may bear the disgrace and be ashamed
- 11:05of all you have done in giving them comfort.
- 11:09And your sisters Sodom and her daughters, and Samaria with her
- 11:13daughters will return to what they were before, and you and
- 11:18your daughters will return to what you were before you.
- 11:23Would you would not even mention your sister Sodom in the day of
- 11:28your pride before your wickedness was uncovered.
- 11:32Even so, you are now scorned by the daughters of Edom and all
- 11:39her neighbors, and the daughters of Philistine of the
- 11:42Philistines, all those around you who despise you.
- 11:47You will bear the consequences of your lewdness and your
- 11:51detestable practices, declares the Lord.
- 11:53This is what the Sovereign Lord says.
- 11:56I will deal with you as you deserve, because you have
- 11:59despised my oath by breaking the covenant.
- 12:02Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of
- 12:06your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with
- 12:11you. Then you will remember your ways
- 12:15and be ashamed. When you receive your sisters,
- 12:18both those who are older than you and those who are younger, I
- 12:22will give them to you as daughters, but not on the basis
- 12:27of my covenant with you. So I will establish my covenant
- 12:31with you, and you will know that I am the Lord.
- 12:35Then when I make atonement for you for all you have done, you
- 12:43will remember and be ashamed and never again open your mouth
- 12:47because of your humiliation, declares the sovereign Lord.
- 12:51That's the end of chapter 16. So there were, there's several
- 12:57things in here and I think maybe the study Bible will cover it,
- 13:00but little notes that I made to the side of the study were
- 13:08basically I'll, I'll talk about the Hittites and the Amorites at
- 13:11the end. But some of the IT, it's, it's
- 13:17always helpful to me to understand these different
- 13:20territories and where these people were.
- 13:22So Samaria was like part of northern Israel.
- 13:27And I just looked it up like it's the modern day West Bank is
- 13:31where it is today. The Philistines that are
- 13:35mentioned in here these this is the modern day.
- 13:39Of land of Gaza. Is where the Philistines were
- 13:41located and then when you hear about Edom, that's Jordan.
- 13:46So those things are all interesting just because there's
- 13:51something that kind of holds true.
- 13:52I mean like Edom and the Philistines, which are Gaza,
- 13:56they're still. Do they despise Israel to some
- 13:59degree? Yes.
- 14:00I mean, you have Jordan and Israel that they have some a
- 14:05quasi peaceful relationship on the Temple Mount, but they're
- 14:07not in agreement. They both are like fighting for
- 14:10the Temple Mount, not fighting, but they they would both rather
- 14:16they have it exclusively than the other one.
- 14:19So there is, you know, tension up there regarding the Temple
- 14:22Mount. When in the very end of this
- 14:25chapter, when God says then when I make atonement for you
- 14:32immediately. I thought of what's the
- 14:35atonement? The the atonement is actually
- 14:39Jesus. So that was, I'll get into that
- 14:45a little at the end. Also, but and then an
- 14:49everlasting covenant. There's several, many covenants
- 14:53with the Israelites and Amir's book, the Exploring Ezekiel
- 15:00talks about a few of them. And I didn't save these from
- 15:04when I originally looked up these, but there's like the
- 15:07Abrahamic covenant, the Davidic covenant, there's multiple
- 15:11covenants. And I've looked at these before
- 15:13because whenever the covenant is talked about, it always makes me
- 15:18wonder which covenant are they talking about?
- 15:21And so there's quite a few of them.
- 15:23And I don't really want to get into the study of all the
- 15:26different covenants right now, but we'll go back to some
- 15:31additional things at the end first.
- 15:33We will go through the study, Bible questions and answers.
- 15:37So at the beginning, how was Jerusalem's father an Amorite
- 15:43and mother a Hittite? Sinful Jerusalem is personified
- 15:48here as a woman born of Pagan parents.
- 15:53The image accurately reflects the city's Pagan origin and
- 15:57early history. Prior to Israel's conquest of
- 16:01the land, Jerusalem was controlled by Canaanite peoples,
- 16:05including the Amorites and Jebusites.
- 16:09Though no other texts mention the Hittites as possessing
- 16:13Jerusalem, they are closely associated with the Amorites in
- 16:17many texts like in Genesis chapter 10 and Joshua chapter
- 16:2212. So a few little side notes.
- 16:25The the Father or OK Ham. So let's go back to Noah.
- 16:32He had three sons. Ham, Japheth and Shem.
- 16:37And Ham was the father of the Amorites and the Hittites, and
- 16:42those areas were Kush, Egypt, Libya, Ethiopia.
- 16:47And so those were the Amorites and the Hittites.
- 16:52And then let's see. So that's what he was.
- 16:57That's what he's talking about. And the Canaanites were the
- 17:00ones. So I think Canaan was also.
- 17:03Canaan was also. The he was the grandson of Ham
- 17:07and I'll read about a story at the end where he was actually
- 17:12cursed. So all of this like there's a
- 17:15connect the dots when you read the history and what happened
- 17:18and you'll see that Canaan became cursed shortly, I don't
- 17:23know, shortly after, but after the Noah's flood, when they all
- 17:27started spreading out into different land territories.
- 17:31So it goes back to very early beginnings in the book of
- 17:35Genesis where this this came about.
- 17:38You can trace all these things back.
- 17:39It's really interesting. So I will get into the next
- 17:43question and answer from the study Bible.
- 17:44What did it mean to cover with the corner of a garment the
- 17:48personification of Jerusalem? Continues as God compares the
- 17:53city to a young woman who whom he graciously chose for a wife
- 17:58once she had reached childbearing age.
- 18:01Covering a woman with the corner of a garment symbolizes
- 18:05symbolized 1's intent to acquire her as a wife.
- 18:10You can read about that in the story of Ruth, chapter 3.
- 18:15By covering her with His garment, the Lord shielded her
- 18:19from public humiliation until he could marry her and clothe her
- 18:24in appropriate attire. How was Jerusalem like a
- 18:30prostitute? Prostitution is used here in
- 18:36Ezekiel 16 and throughout the prophets as a vivid metaphor for
- 18:41Israel's spiritual adultery. In this chapter, Jerusalem is
- 18:46portrayed as a helpless baby who is rescued by the Lord, nurtured
- 18:52toward maturity, and then married by the rescuer himself.
- 18:56It is a true rags to riches story, but Jerusalem turned to
- 19:01idols and so she is described as becoming a prostitute against
- 19:07her husband and rescuer, the Lord.
- 19:11Why would parents sacrifice their children?
- 19:15They probably thought that by appeasing the Pagan gods they
- 19:19could improve their quality of life.
- 19:22Life's harsh realities Example, high infant mortality may have
- 19:27prompted some to place a lower value on children than adults.
- 19:33Some neighboring cultures abandoned unwanted infants to
- 19:37die, others didn't name their children until they were older
- 19:41and more likely to survive. The thought of murdering
- 19:44children shocks us, but the people of Judah who are
- 19:48calloused by Pagan views around them appear not to have been
- 19:53alarmed by that. So I want to add to this, just
- 19:56my own little personal opinion on it.
- 19:59Is that the way the study Bible says that?
- 20:03You know, the murdering of children shocks us, but yet.
- 20:07Today, are we really shocked by abortion?
- 20:11I think it's horrible. It's horrific, but look at our
- 20:16world. Our world just supports that.
- 20:20Which is the murdering of children.
- 20:22That's really essentially what it is.
- 20:24I mean, people can deny it all they want, but the truth is it's
- 20:28murdering children and so we. So if you say that abortion is
- 20:35murdering children, then it would be like saying that the
- 20:39parents are Pagan, like they don't believe in God and they're
- 20:43the same as what these pagans were and they are being their
- 20:47Lord is someone other than than the one true God.
- 20:51So anyway, continuing on with the questions.
- 20:55And am I, I'm sure I offended somebody just there, but it's,
- 20:58it's the truth in the Bible. The Bible does offend us.
- 21:01It opens up our eyes to reality about these things.
- 21:05But the other thing that if someone did that, that person is
- 21:10not that person is able to reconcile their relationship
- 21:15with God when they admit what they did was murderous, was
- 21:20terrible, was something they should never do, and it commit
- 21:22that they're never going to do it again and ask for forgiveness
- 21:25from God. God says he.
- 21:27Remembers the sins no more so God is merciful and forgiving
- 21:32all people on earth are sinners so anytime there's one sin
- 21:37that's called out in the Bible and maybe a person who's reading
- 21:42it didn't ever do any of that so they're like oh that's not me
- 21:45you know that's some of these other people.
- 21:47There is something that will convict each person reading the
- 21:50Bible. So this isn't to single out a
- 21:52person. However, this scripture
- 21:54specifically talks about certain things and if those things
- 21:59relate to us, it can make us not really like the scripture
- 22:04because it's hard to hear truths.
- 22:08It it's like the, it says the the word of God is sharper than
- 22:12a sword. It's like a sword cutting you
- 22:14like it's just like this is horrible to hear.
- 22:17But when you realize this is true, when you understand it's
- 22:23true, and then you want to change your ways and not be a
- 22:26part of it anymore. God loves you.
- 22:29He's always, always loved you. He's always loved all of us and
- 22:32just wanted us to come to this, to face the truth and to turn to
- 22:37him. So I'll go back to questions and
- 22:40answers. What was this mound?
- 22:43The precise meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain.
- 22:47The word may refer to an elevated idolatrous shrine or
- 22:51platform. Others has suggested that a
- 22:53harlot's bed or brothel is in view.
- 22:56In any case, the passage is emphasizing that Jerusalem's
- 23:00unfaithfulness was obvious to everyone.
- 23:05How did Judah prostitute itself to Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon?
- 23:10Rather than trusting in God alone for national security,
- 23:15Judah formed alliances with these foreign powers.
- 23:21OK, this is another thing where in the world today, right now,
- 23:24there's a lot of well, there's always been conflict in the
- 23:27Middle East. I mean, ever since I can
- 23:28remember at least. And when you look at history, it
- 23:31shows that there's always been conflict in the Middle East.
- 23:34And so Judah is, is, is. Israel today going to be forming
- 23:40alliances with any foreign. Powers.
- 23:43If they actually read scripture, they would not.
- 23:47They would just. Trust in God and not be aligned
- 23:51with anyone. And maybe that's where they get
- 23:53at the very end. I don't know.
- 23:55But this is another one of those things that you know, you can
- 23:59learn from mistakes. Only, you know, if they just
- 24:02stay with God and not have any other alliances, we'll see what
- 24:09happens in the future. And it does sound like, as far
- 24:11as prophecy goes, that Israel ends up being all by itself with
- 24:16no other allies in the very end. So no one knows exactly how that
- 24:23will happen. But that's what prophecy.
- 24:25Says while, why yield Judah to the Philistine daughters?
- 24:32Within the extended metaphor of this chapter, Judah is compared
- 24:35to a young woman who has been unfaithful to her husband, the
- 24:38Lord. The neighboring Philistines are
- 24:41pictured as jealous young woman who greedily steal Judah's
- 24:46wealth when given the opportunity.
- 24:48The historical reality behind the figurative language is the
- 24:52transfer of Judah's land by the Assyrian king.
- 24:57Say his name wrong, Senna Sennacherib.
- 25:00I think it's how I was calling him Sena cherub.
- 25:02So I think it's pronounced Sennacherib to three Philistine
- 25:07kings for following Hezekiah's rebellion in seven O 1 BC.
- 25:12So it was the transfer of Judah's land by the Assyrian
- 25:15king, the Assyrian king Sennacherib, to the three
- 25:20Philistine kings following Hezekiah's rebellion in Seven O
- 25:241 BC. If a woman isn't paid for sex,
- 25:29how is she a prostitute? Prostitution is not just about
- 25:34exchanging money for sex, it is also wantonly offering ones body
- 25:40to satisfy strangers. The Lord here condemned the
- 25:45religious promiscuity of his people.
- 25:48It was bad enough that they were adulterous and following other
- 25:51gods, but what they were doing was even worse than adultery.
- 25:58Was nakedness shameful? In some Middle Eastern cultures,
- 26:02even today, no part of a woman's body is to be publicly visible
- 26:06to any man other than her husband.
- 26:09In Ezekiel's day, publicly stripping a woman in front of
- 26:13her lovers was the most humiliating, shameful act one
- 26:17could imagine, where women punished differently than men
- 26:21for adultery and murder. According to the Old Testament
- 26:24law, both adulterous men and women were to be executed by
- 26:31stoning, and that's found in Deuteronomy chapter 22, verses
- 26:3522 through 24. It is uncertain if this law was
- 26:39consistently applied in ancient Israel.
- 26:43In Ezekiel 16, the situation is complicated by the fact that
- 26:48God's adulterous wife, Judah, had acted like a common
- 26:52prostitute and it had sexual relations with countless men,
- 26:56many of them foreigners. Why include this disturbing
- 27:02imagery? The imagery here depicts the
- 27:04horrific consequences for Judah, the whoring wife.
- 27:08She had participated in gross forms, vitality, even the
- 27:13sacrifice of her children, presumably to the God Molech,
- 27:17like an adulteress, would be stoned.
- 27:20So Judah would come under judgment of God for her
- 27:23harlotry. How was Judah's behavior worse
- 27:27than Sodom's? The context emphasizes Sodom's
- 27:31pride, materialism, and social injustice, not the sexual
- 27:36perversities highlighted in Genesis chapters 18 through 19.
- 27:41It is possible that Jerusalem surpassed Sodom in these
- 27:45specific areas. Another possibility is that the
- 27:48language is exaggerated for its shock effect.
- 27:51Perhaps Jerusalem's sins, though not actually as perverse as
- 27:56Saddam's, were more offensive to God because she had received
- 28:01such a clear revelation of his moral will.
- 28:08More is said about Sodom's sexual sins in Genesis 19.
- 28:12Ezekiel's emphasis on social injustice indicates that he was
- 28:17influenced more by contemporary traditions regarding Sodom than
- 28:22by the Genesis account. Why would God restore Sodom and
- 28:26Samaria? Jerusalem was even more sinful
- 28:30than Sodom and Samaria, so much that they almost looked
- 28:33righteous and compared to her. Though those self-righteous
- 28:38Jerusalem refused to admit this, the Lord wood forest the proud
- 28:43city to recognize the magnitude of her sin.
- 28:47Jerusalem would suffer judgment like Samaria and Sodom.
- 28:52Afterward, God would eventually restore all three sisters.
- 28:58And if you look at the history and where people came from,
- 29:01actually we're like, we're all related.
- 29:05So what was this everlasting covenant in the day of
- 29:09Jerusalem's restoration, God would forgive the city and re
- 29:13establish his quote marriage relationship with her at that
- 29:18time. He would revive the line of
- 29:21David's kingship and once more live among his people.
- 29:27And that's we'll see that in Ezekiel chapter 37.
- 29:32But this is about like Jesus, This is, you know, again
- 29:35referencing Jesus. What does atonement mean?
- 29:39The background for this term is found in the Old Testament
- 29:42sacrificial system. In that system, God's wrath was
- 29:47appeased by sacrifices. That quote covered over the sins
- 29:51of the offender. Here God assured Jerusalem
- 29:56representative of His people, that He would make adequate
- 30:00provision for her sins which would allow him to re establish
- 30:05his relationship with her. In the progress of revelation
- 30:08and history, we discover that God views Jesus's death as the
- 30:14sacrifice that enables Him to make peace with sinners and
- 30:20restore them to His favor, and it this references Romans
- 30:26chapter 4. So I found some other chapters
- 30:30that that cover this as well. And I'm I'm just going to go
- 30:35through the order of the tabs that I saved so that it's it's
- 30:40consistent. Here's where it gets into the
- 30:43things that I found when I started looking into this stuff.
- 30:46So if you want to stay great. And if not, we've covered that
- 30:49the actual study part, but I found a little bit more that's
- 30:52interesting. So stick around if you want to
- 30:54hear that. So Psalm 83, when in verse 37 of
- 31:01Ezekiel 16, it says, therefore I'm going to gather all your
- 31:06lovers with whom you found pleasure, those you loved as as
- 31:11well as those you hated, I will gather them against you from all
- 31:15around. So I wonder, Psalm 81 was
- 31:19written by Asaph. He was during the time of David
- 31:24and he was known as a. Seer or a prophet, so he.
- 31:28A lot of the. Psalms that he produced were
- 31:33that he wrote were were prophetic.
- 31:36And so I actually it was interesting because ironically
- 31:39today as I'm doing this study, a video on YouTube came up about
- 31:43the specifically. And there were all of these
- 31:45verses that were referenced that Asaph wrote.
- 31:49And I haven't studied these, but I think it might be an
- 31:53interesting study to do to just to see like what these, these
- 31:59Psalms say, because some, you know, Psalms are all sorts of
- 32:02things. Sometimes they're praising God,
- 32:04sometimes they're lamenting. They, they're just like their
- 32:08songs, basically heartfelt songs to God.
- 32:13But it's interesting that I, I didn't realize at the very
- 32:16beginning, I just thought it was more like poetry.
- 32:18But there's actually prophecy in there.
- 32:21So Asaf wrote Psalm 50, Psalm 73747576777879808182 and 83.
- 32:34So I guess if you start with Psalm 50 and then and then again
- 32:39skip some and start at 73 and go to 83, those are all written by
- 32:44Asaph. So that would be interesting to
- 32:46see what these prophecies say. But here's what Psalm 83 says.
- 32:53This, just like I said, made me think about Ezekiel 16 verse 37,
- 32:59where he's going to gather all your lovers with you who found
- 33:02pleasure. So here's what it says in Psalm
- 33:0583, verse 4. Come, they say, let us destroy
- 33:10them as a nation, so that Israel's name is remembered no
- 33:14more. With one mind they plot
- 33:17together. They form an alliance against
- 33:20you. The tents of Edom, that's Jordan
- 33:24and the Ishmaelites, those would be all the descendants of
- 33:28Ishmael, more or less. The Arab countries of Moab,
- 33:32that's in a portion of Edom and the Hagrites.
- 33:36Now that I didn't look up by Bloss, Ammon and Amalek
- 33:43Philistia and the people of Tyre.
- 33:46Actually, I'm going to have to jump into my study Bible because
- 33:50I probably wrote these things down at one point when I was
- 33:53looking at Psalm 83. And to go back to I probably did
- 33:59look up all of these different nations to see who they were and
- 34:05write them down because I write in my Bible.
- 34:08And when you don't see like by Bloss, I don't see that often.
- 34:15So it's not one like Edom is written throughout.
- 34:17So I know that's Jordan. But anyway, let's see.
- 34:21This is to form an alliance around you.
- 34:23So Edom is Jordan, Ishmaelites are the descendants, Arab, you
- 34:27know, the descendants of Ishmael.
- 34:30Moab is Jordan, the Hagrites are also Jordan.
- 34:35And then by Bloss it has a footnote in the study Bible and
- 34:43it just says the is that really go with that 1st?
- 34:52I don't OK, I've my markings. OK, so it says the Hebrew says
- 34:57Selah, a word of uncertain meaning here, or Selah, Selah.
- 35:03I know I've seen that before, but I guess I don't know if.
- 35:06It if they changed it to by Bloss, I don't know.
- 35:10So that one confuses me. I don't have any answer for that
- 35:13one. Ammon is also in German in
- 35:16Gordon and then Amalek. I didn't write something down
- 35:22for Amalek, but that that's another interesting one.
- 35:28Maybe I can? Search that really quick like
- 35:30who? Where is the modern country?
- 35:32Where is the modern country associated with Amalek from?
- 35:41Found in the Bible? Moderate.
- 35:49OK, it's the biblical Amalekites.
- 35:52Lived in the Nagiv Desert and Sinai Peninsula near modern day
- 35:57Israel, but the nation itself vanished with their memory
- 36:02becoming a symbol for Israel's arch enemy, leading to various
- 36:06modern interpretations including some right wing Israel's linking
- 36:11them to the Palestinians while others identify them with
- 36:15historical groups like the ancient arm Armenians or even
- 36:19Nazis. In a symbolic sense, though,
- 36:22most Jews don't see a direct modern national descent.
- 36:27So the they were descendants of Amalek, who was a grandson of
- 36:35Esau, what who was the brother of Jacob and Israel.
- 36:38So that would connect them to Jordan because Esau was the one
- 36:43who founded, you know who most of his descendants were found in
- 36:47Jordan, and he is the brother. See how everybody's related?
- 36:51They're they're actually brothers.
- 36:54So anyway, and then it it going back to Psalm 83, Philistia,
- 36:58that's the land of Gaza today with the people of Tyre, that's
- 37:01in Lebanon, even a Syria, that would be Turkey.
- 37:05It's like part of Turkey has joined them to reinforce Lot's
- 37:10descendants and Lot's descendants that would probably
- 37:16be from with his daughters, and they were the.
- 37:21I think the Ammonites and the Moabites and they were, they
- 37:24resided in Jordan in like a southern portion of Jordan, I
- 37:31think it was. Those were the two names, but.
- 37:33Anyway, so it's it's, it's a lot of Jordan.
- 37:36So we have Jordan, we have Palestinians, we have Lebanon,
- 37:41we have Gaza, Turkey, all these people do not really like.
- 37:46In Israel today. So that's kind of interesting,
- 37:48but that's Psalm 83 and that's, you know, where those all the
- 37:52nation, the surrounding areas where Israel had committed
- 37:57adultery, you know, they were they were Pagan people.
- 38:01And are those the people that Israel committed this idolatry
- 38:06with? I don't know.
- 38:08I mean, when you're around, when you surround yourself with with
- 38:12people that are not godly focused or not of the same God,
- 38:16then you can start to take on their character, You know, you
- 38:20can start to become more like them.
- 38:24And so God warned about that. Typically people end up turning
- 38:28away from God rather than getting closer to God when they
- 38:32have a partner that is not the same believer.
- 38:39And so God warns that like, he doesn't want.
- 38:42That's the whole reason why he said like, don't marry foreign
- 38:46people because they worshipped multiple deities.
- 38:50They didn't have one God. They were, you know, they would
- 38:52draw them into idolatry. In fact, that happened to
- 38:55David's son Solomon. He married all these women from
- 38:59Pagan countries and then he himself started building altars
- 39:04for these other gods that aren't even gods like these things,
- 39:09these entities that the people worshipped.
- 39:12So it's. It's easy to.
- 39:14Happen and anyway can move on from there and let's see.
- 39:20So Psalm 83 was was referenced then I was curious the Amorites,
- 39:25like who were the Amorites? Because it says that your father
- 39:29was an Amorite and then your mother was a Hittite.
- 39:33So the Amorites originated from the Syrian desert region with
- 39:37their homeland often identified as central Syria around Jebel
- 39:43Bisheri, but they spread across Mesopotamia, Syria and
- 39:47Palestine. So their legacy is found in
- 39:50modern day Syria, parts of Iraq and the Levant, which consists
- 39:55of Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, with Syrians often
- 40:00considered the closest genetic descendants.
- 40:04So that's that's interesting because Syria also, I think
- 40:08that's also like where Isaac's. Wife came from Rebecca, I
- 40:17believe she came from Syria also.
- 40:20And so just kind of interesting when you see how interrelated
- 40:25all these people are. And then it also makes sense why
- 40:29the Jewish people will say Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
- 40:34So they will clarify that it's Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
- 40:38So first of all, there's clarification that it's Isaac
- 40:42and then Jacob because it would be either Isaac or Ishmael.
- 40:47So that's where the Arabs and the Jews disagree.
- 40:51So everybody agrees on Abraham. But then Abraham had, you know,
- 40:56the sons like who Ishmael was first born.
- 41:00But God said that's not who I was giving you the promise
- 41:03through. That was when Abraham took it
- 41:06upon himself to accelerate God's plan.
- 41:10Or actually it was his wife Sarah who suggested it.
- 41:13So what a mistake that that was made there because of ongoing
- 41:18conflict for so many years. But so there's Abraham.
- 41:23Then this is where the different beliefs come in, where there's
- 41:28Isaac or Ishmael. So the Arabs generally say
- 41:32Ishmael was the proper descendant, and then the Jewish
- 41:36people say Isaac was, and that's what the Bible says too.
- 41:40And then after that, Isaac had Isaac and Rebecca had Jacob and
- 41:50Esau and Esau. I mean, Jacob wasn't a good
- 41:53person either, But Esau, then he, I mean, it describes his
- 42:02births. He was red, he was hairy.
- 42:04I mean, there were lots of things and it said that, you
- 42:06know, God, I mean, there's something bad about him.
- 42:10And from the very beginning, it seems the way he's talked about
- 42:15in the Bible. But then his descendants are
- 42:18like in modern day Jordan. So you can see that Jacob and
- 42:23Esau were brothers. They're that closely related.
- 42:27And Jacob's, the descendants are the people of Israel.
- 42:30So everybody's really closely related here.
- 42:34But it's, I find it fascinating if, if you didn't know these
- 42:38things and I didn't know these things when I started
- 42:41researching them. So then we know that when Noah
- 42:45came, he had three different sons and they descended.
- 42:48Are they, they settled in certain areas?
- 42:52So I was wondering like which of Noah's descendants settled in
- 42:58Syria, if that's where you'd, you know, Just for clarification
- 43:06about descendants. So Noah's descendant who settled
- 43:10in Syria was Aram, the son of Shem, Noah's eldest son, giving
- 43:18his name to the Arameans who inhabited the region including
- 43:21modern day Syria and parts of Mesopotamia and Damascus
- 43:25mentioned as a key city. So the descendants of Shem.
- 43:31And then I was curious about what nations did Noah's son Ham
- 43:38start? So Noah Sun Ham is traditionally
- 43:42seen as the ancestor of peoples in Africa and parts of the
- 43:46Middle East with his sons Kush associated with Nubia or
- 43:51Ethiopia, Misram or Egypt put which is Libya and Canaan, the
- 43:59Canaanites, Phoenicians founding nations like.
- 44:03So here's the names of the modern Egypt, Libya, Ethiopia
- 44:08and the ancient peoples of the Levant.
- 44:12The Bible's table of nations in Genesis 10 lists these
- 44:16descendants with Egypt, often called the land of Ham.
- 44:21And so this brought about like who were the sons of Noah and
- 44:25what happened to them and their descendants?
- 44:28So I'm going to read this to you.
- 44:30This is from gotquestions.org. So you can look up that question
- 44:34if you want to read it for yourself because there's links
- 44:37to Scripture. So Noah had three sons born to
- 44:40him, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, before God sent a flood to
- 44:46destroy the world. Whenever the names of Noah's
- 44:50three sons are recorded, Shem is also is always mentioned first
- 44:56even though Shem was second born.
- 44:59The Bible often lists people according to their prominence
- 45:03rather than age. Japheth was the oldest and Ham
- 45:08was the youngest. Japheth was born when Noah was
- 45:12500 years old, and the flood came 100 years later.
- 45:19Since Shem was 102 years after the flood, he must have been
- 45:25born when Noah was 502. There is no record of when Ham
- 45:31was born other than the fact that he was born sometime after
- 45:36Shem. Shem was the ancestor of all the
- 45:40sons of Eber, and this is important because the word Eber
- 45:45is the origin of the Hebrew word.
- 45:48For Hebrew, the word shem means name, which implies that Noah
- 45:54expected his son's name to become great.
- 45:57He was right. The modern words Semitic and
- 46:01Semite are derived from Shem's name.
- 46:06The Bible records that Shem had five sons, Elam, Asher,
- 46:12Arfaksad, Lud, and Aram. Shem live to be 600 years of age
- 46:19and became the ancestor of the Semitic peoples.
- 46:23Abraham, a descendant of Shem, is the first person in the Bible
- 46:28who is referred to as a Hebrew. Noah blessed Shem above his
- 46:34brothers and it was through Shem that the promised seed Jesus
- 46:40destined to crush Satan came. That seed is traced back to
- 46:47Adam's son Seth through Shem and on to Abraham, Judah and David
- 46:54leading all the way to Christ. And you can find that in Luke
- 46:57chapter 3. Shem's son Elam was the father
- 47:02of the Elamites. Now that's interesting because
- 47:04Elam is like where modern day Iran is.
- 47:10So Shem's son Elam was the father of the Elamites who later
- 47:14settled east of Mesopotamia. Shem's son Asher, whose name is
- 47:19related to the word Assyria, is most likely the father of those
- 47:24who settled the ancient region of Assyria.
- 47:28Arphagsit is thought by many scholars to be a compound form
- 47:34of the Hebrew word for Chaldea, which was a region in southern
- 47:38Mesopotamia. It was through our Fatah Zack
- 47:43that Eber came. Scholars believe that the
- 47:47descendants of Shem's son Lud became known as the Lydians of
- 47:52Asian Minor, and Aram is identified by Bible scholars
- 47:57with the area North East of the Promised Land, today known as
- 48:01Syria. The sons of Aram are listed in
- 48:05Genesis chapter 10 of Aram's son is later referred to in the book
- 48:12of Job. Noah's first born son Japheth is
- 48:17listed as the father of Gomer, Magog, Medai, Javon, Tubal,
- 48:25Meshech and Tyrus in Genesis 10 verse 2.
- 48:30Their descendants became the people who live to the north and
- 48:34West of Israel and after Babel they spoke what today are
- 48:40classified as Indo European languages.
- 48:45In his blessing in blessing his son Japheth, Noah said, May God
- 48:52extend Japheth's territory, may Japheth live in the tents of
- 48:57Shem, and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth.
- 49:04There are actually 2 schools of thought regarding what this
- 49:06prophecy about Japheth means. Some scholars are of the opinion
- 49:10that the enlargement of Japheth's territory refers to a
- 49:13great numerical increase of his descendants.
- 49:16The comment made Japheth live in the tents of Shem mean that
- 49:20Japheth will share in the blessings of Shen.
- 49:23According to this view, there was to be a time when God worked
- 49:28primarily with Shem, the people of Israel, but later Japheth
- 49:32would be brought into connection with the faith of Israel to
- 49:36share Israel's blessings. A similar prophecy is evident in
- 49:42the Abrahamic covenant, where God promises to bless all
- 49:46nations through Abraham's seed. The fulfillment is found in
- 49:51Christ and in the gospel coming to the Gentiles at the inception
- 49:56of the Church. Other scholars are of the
- 49:59opinion that the extension of Japheth's territory refers to a
- 50:03territorial enlargement and living quote.
- 50:06In the tents of Shem is the conquest of the Semites
- 50:10territory by Japhethites. According to this view, the
- 50:15fulfillment was the Greek and the Roman conquest of Israel.
- 50:20Ham, the youngest son. The youngest of Noah's three
- 50:24sons, had four sons. Kush, Mizraam, Hebrew for Egypt
- 50:29put and Canaan. Egypt was later called the land
- 50:34of Ham. The Hamatic peoples are shown in
- 50:38Genesis 10, six through 20 as becoming a godless and worldly
- 50:44power. It was the land of Israel that
- 50:48was assigned to Ham's son Canaan.
- 50:52And for centuries it was under the control of the Egyptians.
- 50:57Ham is the father. And I'm going to skip this
- 51:00because it says the Arabians and I don't think that's correct.
- 51:02And also this is like through gotquestions.org.
- 51:06And because they actually have another question and answer that
- 51:12says the opposite of this. So I think this might be a typo
- 51:15or it may be a portion of it. I actually reached out to got
- 51:20questions to say, Hey, is this a, does this need to be updated?
- 51:26Because you have two things saying different things.
- 51:29So I'm going to kind of skip over that word for now because
- 51:33it could be a portion, but I'm just not really sure.
- 51:37It created some confusion here. But Ham is the father.
- 51:40I'm going to skip of the Canaanites and Africans
- 51:44including the Egyptians due to Ham's sin against his father
- 51:49that was recorded in Genesis Chapter 9.
- 51:53Noah cursed Canaan saying Canaan would be a servant to Shem.
- 51:58This was fulfilled centuries later when the Israelites
- 52:02entered the land of Canaan and subdued the inhabitants of that
- 52:06land. See how it all like?
- 52:08If you follow it, it explains. So I was curious like our
- 52:13Arabians from Shem are ham in the Bible and I just Google
- 52:17searched this. So in biblical tradition, Arabs
- 52:20are primarily descendants of Shem, Noah's son, tracing
- 52:25through Shems great grandson Eber and his son Yoktan, making
- 52:31them part of the Semitic peoples, Though some Islamic
- 52:35traditions link Arabs to Abraham's son Ishmael, who is
- 52:39also from Shem's line. While Ham's descendants are
- 52:42associated with African and Canaanite peoples, Shem's
- 52:46lineage is seen as the origin of Semitic groups, including Arabs,
- 52:51Hebrews, Assyrians, according to the Bible's Table of Nations in
- 52:54Genesis. So the other gotquestions.org,
- 53:00it was who was Shem in the Bible then?
- 53:02I'll read that to you. You can find that if you ask
- 53:05that, you know, search that question in gotquestions.org.
- 53:08You can find all the links that go with this.
- 53:11Shem was one of the three sons of Noah before the great flood
- 53:15that God used to judge the inhabitants of the earth for
- 53:18their great wickedness. God instructed the righteous
- 53:22Noah to build an ark to save Noah and his wife, along with
- 53:25their sons Shem, Ham and Japheth, and their wives.
- 53:32Well, that's interesting. So I need to look at that
- 53:37because that seems like that contradicts the article that we
- 53:39just read about when they were each born.
- 53:42So we'll have to look into that because there are eight people
- 53:47on there and let's see. So there would be the sons and
- 53:53the wife. So they couldn't have like that
- 53:55would contradict scripture. So the prior, whoever wrote that
- 53:58prior one probably needs to redo it because how could you know?
- 54:03When we were reading it, it was saying that they happened like
- 54:05100 years after the flood or something like that.
- 54:07Like it was saying like how the order of when they were all
- 54:10born. So something needs to be redone
- 54:13on this apparently. And got questions.
- 54:17It's usually really good, but I think there might be an error
- 54:20here because there were, I mean, even in the book of Hebrews, it
- 54:24talks about eight people were saved.
- 54:26And so that would be Noah and his wife and his three sons and
- 54:31their three wives. So that's 6 + 2, eight people.
- 54:35So anyway, going back to what gotquestions.org says, the Lord
- 54:40brought two of every kind of unclean animal and seven of
- 54:44every kind of clean animal and shut them up in the ark before
- 54:48the floodwaters covered the earth.
- 54:50The families of the animals were in the ark for about 370 days,
- 54:5440 days and 40 nights during the rains and then the remainder of
- 54:59the time waiting for the floodwaters to recede.
- 55:03Shem is always mentioned first among the sons of Noah, possibly
- 55:07because he was he was of primary importance to Moses audience.
- 55:12The Hebrews Shem was their ancestor.
- 55:15In the birth order of Noah's sons, Shem was the middle child
- 55:21as calculated below. OK, so here let's see what this
- 55:25one says. According to Genesis 532, Noah
- 55:29began having children when he was 500 years old.
- 55:32According to Genesis 711, Noah was 600 years when the full
- 55:37flood began, making his oldest child 100 years.
- 55:42So maybe I misread because when the flood began, I guess that
- 55:47would be they would they would be there before the flood
- 55:51happened. And then according to Genesis 11
- 55:56verse 10, Shem had a child when he was 100 years old.
- 56:01So that's Shem had a child when he was 100 years, two years
- 56:05after the flood, making him 98 years old at the time of the
- 56:09flood. OK, so this might have clarified
- 56:12that other article that was not clear since we know that Ham was
- 56:17not the oldest. According to Genesis 924, the
- 56:22100 year old son at the time of the flood must have been
- 56:26Japheth. Shem, along with his brothers
- 56:29and their wives fulfilled God's command to begin repopulating
- 56:32the earth. Shem's line produced the
- 56:35Assyrians, Chaldeans, Elamites, Arameans, Moabites, Ammonites,
- 56:42Edomites, Arabs, and Hebrews. So we have people of Jordan, we
- 56:47have. People from Iran, we have other
- 56:50Arabs and we have Hebrews. The people of Israel, the
- 56:54Chaldeans were kind of in the area of Iraq, so that's kind of
- 57:01the territory. Shem's great grandson Eber was
- 57:05the father of those who were eventually called Hebrews,
- 57:08according or including Abraham. Abraham and the Jews.
- 57:12See Genesis 10 and 11 for more on Shem's line.
- 57:16There is only one story that deals with Shem Noah, our son of
- 57:20Noah. After the flood, Noah became
- 57:24something of a farmer and grew a vineyard.
- 57:26He became drunk on the wine one day and passed out naked in his
- 57:31tent. Noah's son Ham found him thus,
- 57:36but instead of covering his father or helping him in any
- 57:38way, he reported the incident to his brothers.
- 57:41Outside. Shem and Japheth brought some
- 57:44sort of garment into the tent, and walking backward so they
- 57:48could not see their father's nakedness, they covered Noah
- 57:51with the garment. When Noah woke, he was angry and
- 57:55cursed Ham, Ham's son Canaan, but he blessed both Shem and
- 58:01Japheth for the respect they showed.
- 58:04After Shem had fathered many children, he passed away at the
- 58:08Old age of 600. According to Genesis Chapter 11
- 58:12verses 10 through 11, Shem is mentioned in the New Testament
- 58:16as an ancestor of Jesus and that's found in Luke chapter 3
- 58:20verse 36. So I think I read this already.
- 58:27Like who settled in Syria and that was Aram son of Shem.
- 58:32And then what modern day country represents Assyria?
- 58:37No single modern day country represents Assyria as its
- 58:42heartland was in Mesopotamia, which is primarily modern day
- 58:46Iraq, but all but its empire also covered parts of Turkey,
- 58:51Syria and Iran. So when we see Assyria, it
- 58:55sounds like Syria, but there's more to it.
- 58:57There's Iraq, Turkey and Iran that are part of it, or Iran.
- 59:02Today, Assyrians and indigenous people live scattered across
- 59:07these regions, particularly northern Iraq, and advocate for
- 59:12an autonomous area in their ancestral lands.
- 59:17And then I was curious also of who?
- 59:24Who? Settled in modern day Turkey,
- 59:27primarily Japheth but also descendants of Shem and Ham.
- 59:31Settled in regions corresponding to modern day Turkey or Anatolia
- 59:37with Japheth sons like Gomer, Tagarma, Jayvon and Tubal linked
- 59:43to early peoples there while Ham's grandson Nimrod influenced
- 59:48Mesopotamia bordering Turkey and Shems lineage set lineage.
- 59:53Settled nearby in Persia which is modern day Iran.
- 59:57Also slash Assyria showing a broader ancestral presence in
- 1:00:02the region after the flood. So it's Jaypath in the north.
- 1:00:07Shem is kind of the middle. Of the Middle East.
- 1:00:12And then Ham is kind of like over like an Egypt and Africa
- 1:00:15side. So there's like separate
- 1:00:18territories. But this also helps when we're
- 1:00:21studying the Bible and just knowing when they always talk
- 1:00:24about somebody coming out of the north to Israel and and in Bible
- 1:00:30prophecy, it helps. So what country today was Sodom
- 1:00:34and Gomorrah? Now this is up for grabs.
- 1:00:36Sodom and Gomorrah because, and the reason I look this up is
- 1:00:39because the Bible in chapter 16 talks about comparing Jerusalem
- 1:00:46to Sodom and also Samaria. So just out of curiosity, I
- 1:00:51wanted to have a visual idea of where was Sodom located.
- 1:00:56So Sodom and Gomorrah aren't specific modern countries.
- 1:00:59They are legendary cities from the Bible, believed to have been
- 1:01:03in the Dead Sea region, likely in or near modern day Jordan and
- 1:01:09Israel near the southern end of the Dead Sea.
- 1:01:13While their exact location is debated, archaeological sites
- 1:01:17like Bob in Dera and Numeria in Jordan and Tell Al Hammam, also
- 1:01:25in Jordan are often suggested as potential candidates due to
- 1:01:30evidence of fiery destruction. So that's kind of interesting as
- 1:01:35well. Also in Ezekiel chapter 16 verse
- 1:01:4263. I'll reread it to refresh.
- 1:01:47God says, Then when I make atonement for you for all you
- 1:01:52have done, you will remember and be ashamed and never again open
- 1:01:56your mouth because of your humiliation, declares the
- 1:01:59sovereign Lord. So this is about Jesus, and we
- 1:02:02can find that in Romans chapter 3, verse 25, where it says God
- 1:02:09presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement through the
- 1:02:15shedding of his blood to be received by faith.
- 1:02:20He did this to demonstrate his righteousness because in his
- 1:02:24forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished.
- 1:02:31So God was he, He withheld his wrath.
- 1:02:36And that's where we have people who explain how Jesus took the
- 1:02:42wrath that really should have been upon all of us because he,
- 1:02:48Jesus, was the sacrifice of atonement, that that's how his
- 1:02:54death was the final sacrifice. God let.
- 1:02:59He let a substitute sacrifice happen with animals, but animals
- 1:03:03never fully atone. They weren't an equal
- 1:03:06substitute. Only a human would be an equal
- 1:03:11substitute. And that substitute had also had
- 1:03:14to also be perfect and blameless.
- 1:03:17Blameless and without sin. And no one could fit that
- 1:03:21category. The Book of Revelation tells us
- 1:03:24about that in in a symbolic language where no one could open
- 1:03:28the scroll except for the Lamb who was slain.
- 1:03:31That's Jesus. He's the only one who could
- 1:03:33break the curse. Like open up, I, I.
- 1:03:37It almost seems like the scroll is actually the con, not the
- 1:03:41Contra. I don't know the document that
- 1:03:45is about who owns the earth and in order to take back the earth,
- 1:03:50the seals have to be broken. And there is, you know, there
- 1:03:53are curses that happen as a result of it.
- 1:03:56And just an interesting thought and perspective on the Book of
- 1:04:01Revelation and, and what that symbology is.
- 1:04:05And then also in Hebrews chapter 2 verse 17, it says for this
- 1:04:11reason he had to be made like them, Jesus had to be made like
- 1:04:16them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a
- 1:04:21merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and
- 1:04:28that he might make atonement. For the sins of the people.
- 1:04:34So we see there how it explains that Jesus is the atonement.
- 1:04:39So once again, the Old Testament tells us about Jesus and all we
- 1:04:46have to do is look a little bit, but it helps when we have the
- 1:04:49New Testament and can see see it clearly like this.
- 1:04:53So you know, just Ezekiel chapter 16, verse 63.
- 1:04:59And those verses that I just read were Romans 325 and Hebrews
- 1:05:07217. So God always provides like.
- 1:05:13Multiple witnesses and the study Bible, when it references
- 1:05:18atonement, it talks about Romans chapter 4 through chapter 5.
- 1:05:23So there's probably even more, but I just looked up the word
- 1:05:27atonement and came up with those.
- 1:05:29So then I thought about atonement and I thought, well,
- 1:05:34the Jews celebrate a day of atonement.
- 1:05:37And so I was curious because I'm not Jewish.
- 1:05:39Like what? But you know what, what is this?
- 1:05:43I mean, it's not they're not celebrating Jesus.
- 1:05:46And So what is what is this they're celebrating?
- 1:05:50So the Jewish Day of Atonement is Yom Kippur, the holiest day
- 1:05:56of the year, a solemn occasion for introspection, repentance
- 1:06:02and seeking forgiveness for sins from the past year, culminating
- 1:06:07in culminating the High Holy Days starting with Rosh
- 1:06:12Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. It involves a near 25 hour fast,
- 1:06:19no food drink, bathing, leather shoes, marital relations and
- 1:06:25intense prayer services focusing on spiritual cleansing and a
- 1:06:30closer connection with God ending with the blowing of the
- 1:06:36shofar. So the meaning for the Hebrew
- 1:06:40day for Day of Atonement, it's a day to wipe the slate clean and
- 1:06:45be purified before God. It falls on the 10th day of
- 1:06:51Tishri, the 7th month of the Jewish lunar calendar, which is
- 1:06:56usually late September or early October.
- 1:07:02And that is, that is Yom Kippur. And so then I wanted to look up
- 1:07:12like, what are the High Holy days?
- 1:07:16So I'll read this. And this is from Jewish
- 1:07:19practice. If the year is a train, the High
- 1:07:22Holidays, AKA Hi Holy Days, are its engine.
- 1:07:28A delicate blend of joy and solemnity, feasting and fasting,
- 1:07:33prayer and inspiration make up the spiritually charged head of
- 1:07:39the Jewish year. That's what Rosh means are from
- 1:07:42Rosh Hashanah's head, the High. And that was just my comment.
- 1:07:46OK, back to the the reading here.
- 1:07:49This is from chabadduck.org. The High Holiday season begins
- 1:07:56during the month of Elul, when the shofar is sounded every
- 1:08:00weekday morning, a Clarion called to return to God in
- 1:08:04advance of the sacred days that lay ahead.
- 1:08:07The two day holiday of Rosh Hashanah is the head of the
- 1:08:11Jewish year, the time when God reinvest Himself in creation as
- 1:08:17we crown Him King of the Universe through prayer, shofar
- 1:08:21blast, and celebration. Rosh Hashanah 2026 begins before
- 1:08:28sundown on Friday, September 11th and ends after nightfall on
- 1:08:35Sunday, September 13th. A week later, the High Holidays
- 1:08:42reached their crescendo with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
- 1:08:47Like angels, we neither eat nor drink for 25 hours.
- 1:08:52Dressed in white, we pray in the synagogue, united as one people,
- 1:08:56children of one Father. Yom Kippur 2026 begins before
- 1:09:02sundown on September 20th and ends after nightfall on Monday,
- 1:09:09September 21st. But it does not end there.
- 1:09:14The otherworldliness of the High Holidays is then channeled into
- 1:09:18festive holidays of Sukkot and Simchat Torah, which bring the
- 1:09:23annual fall holiday season to a most joyous conclusion.
- 1:09:28So that is, I think that is all that I had for this chapter.
- 1:09:33So it leaves us with some dates and especially some dates.
- 1:09:37This year to look, look towards and see if there's anything
- 1:09:41significant. September 11th, which is an
- 1:09:44interesting date for the United States, and that's when Rosh
- 1:09:47Hashanah 2026 starts. So anyway, I will conclude this
- 1:09:53study now and if you thought this was good, if you haven't
- 1:09:58subscribed, please subscribe. If you found it beneficial,
- 1:10:01please share it with other people and hope you come back
- 1:10:05for the next chapter 17.
