- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:06podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:14you by the Great News Podcast. Why should you check it out?
- 0:17Because good news should be heard and the link is in the
- 0:21show notes. Today's quote comes from Andre
- 0:25Gee, French Nobel Prize laureate, author of more than 50
- 0:30books, described in his New York Times obituary as France's
- 0:35greatest contemporary man of letters.
- 0:38A lifelong advocate of intellectual freedom whose
- 0:42writings were placed on the Vatican's Index of Forbidden
- 0:45Books. A man who spent 8 decades
- 0:49questioning, exploring and refusing to settle into
- 0:53comfortable certainty. In his final book written in his
- 0:5780s, he said. Believe those who are seeking
- 1:02the truth, doubt those who find it. 2 sentences, each one a
- 1:09compass bearing for how to navigate a world saturated with
- 1:13people who are absolutely certain they are right.
- 1:16Believe those who are seeking the truth is an act of trust
- 1:19extended toward intellectual humility.
- 1:23The seeker arrives with open hands.
- 1:26They have more questions than answers.
- 1:30They are willing to be wrong, willing to revise, willing to
- 1:34follow the evidence wherever it leads, even when it leads
- 1:38somewhere uncomfortable. That openness is the hallmark of
- 1:42genuine inquiry, and it is, Gate argues, worthy of your trust.
- 1:49Doubt. Those who find it is the harder
- 1:52instruction and the more necessary one, Think about the
- 1:57voices in the world that speak with absolute certainty.
- 2:02The ideologue who has perfectly mapped the cause of all social
- 2:07problems and knows precisely who is to blame.
- 2:11The guru who has unlocked the definitive secret of a
- 2:14meaningful life and will share it with you for a price.
- 2:20The politician who has identified the complete truth
- 2:23about a complex issue and feels no need to acknowledge its
- 2:28complications. The algorithm that serves you
- 2:32content confirming exactly what you already believe, until the
- 2:37world looks simple and your certainty feels righteous.
- 2:43Every one of them has found the truth.
- 2:46And every one of them, he warns, deserves your doubt.
- 2:52Because here's what the certainty of finding conceals.
- 2:58Reality is complex. Human beings are complex.
- 3:03The questions that matter most about how to live, how to
- 3:07govern, what is right, what is true, do not resolve into clean
- 3:14final answers. The person who tells you they
- 3:18have resolved them entirely has stopped engaging with the
- 3:22question. They have replaced inquiry with
- 3:25conclusion, and a person with a conclusion held too tightly
- 3:31stops thinking. Yed's full original passage
- 3:35continues. Doubt everything, but don't
- 3:40doubt yourself. That third clause is the anchor.
- 3:45The call to doubt certainty isn't a descent into paralysis
- 3:49or nihilism. It's the opposite call to keep
- 3:54your own mind active, your own judgement alive, your own
- 3:58inquiry open. Don't outsource your thinking to
- 4:02anyone who claims to have already finished it.
- 4:06The secrets keep you honest. The finders make you
- 4:10comfortable. Gee knew which one of those to
- 4:14trust? So here's the question.
- 4:17Who are you currently listening to?
- 4:19Whose voice you are giving weight and trust?
- 4:23And are they a seeker or a Finder?
- 4:27Because the Finders are everywhere.
- 4:29They are loud, they are confident and their certainty
- 4:33feels like safety in an uncertain world.
- 4:37But Deed spent 80 years showing us that the safety is an
- 4:41illusion. The Seekers open question is
- 4:44more honest and more useful than the Finders closed answer.
- 4:49Believe those who are seeking without those who find it.
- 4:54And above all else, keep thinking for yourself.
- 4:58That's it for today. I'm Andrew McGivern signing off
- 5:01for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 5:06Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
