- Lucas: Hey everyone. Welcome back to another episode of Learn Dutch with Fexingo. Luna: Hi! I am so ready for this one because my hair is definitely getting out of control. Lucas: It happens to the best of us. And today we are going to help you take control at the salon. Luna: Yes. Last week we talked about clothing, but what do you say when you want to change it? Lucas: Exactly. We are learning phrases for the hairdresser or kapper in Dutch. Luna: This feels very practical. I need this before my next vacation. Lucas: It is a great skill. Let’s start with the most basic request. Luna: I just walk in and say 'knipbeurt'? Like that? Lucas: Not quite alone. The phrase is 'een knipbeurt'. Lucas: Een knipbeurt.... een knipbeurt. Luna: Een knipbeurt. Lucas: Perfect. It literally means 'a haircut'. Simple noun. Luna: Okay. Een knipbeurt. That sounds easy enough. Lucas: But usually you want to be specific. You don't just want any cut. Luna: Right. I want something shorter. How do I say that? Lucas: We use a polite structure here. 'Ik wil graag'. Luna: Ik wil graag... Lucas: Followed by the description. 'een kortere snit'. Lucas: Ik wil graag een kortere snit.... Ik wil graag een kortere snit. Luna: Ik wil graag een kortere snit. Lucas: Great. 'Kortere' means shorter. 'Snit' means cut or style. Luna: Ik wil graag een kortere snit. I like that. It sounds professional. Lucas: It is. Now, let’s get into the details. Many people have issues with the sides. Luna: Oh yes. My hair sticks out on the sides all the time. Lucas: So you might say: 'Kan je de zijkanten korter knippen?' Lucas: Kan je de zijkanten korter knippen?... Kan je de zijkanten korter knippen? Luna: Kan je de zijkanten korter knippen? Lucas: Spot on. 'Zijkanten' is the sides. 'Korter' is shorter. 'Knippen' is to cut. Luna: Kan je de zijkanten korter knippen. Okay. That is very useful. Lucas: And what if the hairdresser does it too short? Luna: Oh no. Then I panic. What do I say then? Lucas: You say: 'Het is te veel aan de zijkanten.' Lucas: Het is te veel aan de zijkanten.... Het is te veel aan de zijkanten. Luna: Het is te veel aan de zijkanten. Lucas: Correct. 'Te veel' means too much. So it is too much volume on the sides. Luna: Het is te veel aan de zijkanten. I hope I never have to use it. Lucas: Better safe than sorry. But there is one more thing. Luna: What is it? Lucas: The wash. Before the cut, you usually want a shampoo. Luna: Do I ask for shampoo specifically? Lucas: No, you ask for the action. 'Mag ik een wassing?' Lucas: Mag ik een wassing?... Mag ik een wassing? Luna: Mag ik een wassing? Lucas: Excellent. 'Wassing' comes from 'wassen', which is to wash. Luna: Mag ik een wassing. Okay. So I can combine them. Lucas: You can. You could say 'Mag ik een wassing?' first. Luna: Then after the wash, I say 'Ik wil graag een kortere snit'. Lucas: Or add 'Kan je de zijkanten korter knippen?' Luna: That flows really well. It feels like a real conversation. Lucas: It does. Let's review the set quickly. Luna: Ready. First is 'een knipbeurt'. Lucas: Second: 'Ik wil graag een kortere snit'. Luna: Third: 'Kan je de zijkanten korter knippen?' Lucas: Fourth: 'Het is te veel aan de zijkanten'. Luna: And fifth: 'Mag ik een wassing?' Lucas: Perfectly said. You are ready for the salon. Luna: I feel confident. I might actually go today. Lucas: Go ahead. Just remember to keep it simple. Luna: One last check. 'Een knipbeurt'. Lucas: Yes. Luna: 'Ik wil graag een kortere snit'. Lucas: Good. Luna: 'Kan je de zijkanten korter knippen?' Lucas: Very good. Luna: 'Het is te veel aan de zijkanten'. Lucas: Exactly right. Luna: 'Mag ik een wassing?' Lucas: Nailed it. Luna: These are so much easier than I thought. Lucas: They are. Repetition helps a lot. Luna: I will practice these while I brush my hair tonight. Lucas: That is a great idea. Keep speaking Dutch. Luna: Before we go, I want to mention something important. Lucas: Sure. What is on your mind? Luna: If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, listener support keeps the show running. Lucas: It does.
