- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17For Advent 2025 we are in a series called Brought to the
- 0:21Light, Advent for all who need it.
- 0:23This series is looking at the themes of Advent and how Jesus
- 0:26comes to us all. You can find more information
- 0:29about our church at fumccollingswood.org.
- 0:33Thanks for listening. This morning Scripture comes to
- 0:42us from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 1, starting in verse 18.
- 0:49This is how Jesus the Messiah was born.
- 0:53His mother Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph, but before
- 0:57the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she
- 1:01became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 1:04Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not
- 1:09want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the
- 1:13engagement quietly. As he considered this, an Angel
- 1:17of the Lord appeared to him in a dream.
- 1:19Joseph, son of David, the Angel said, do not be afraid to take
- 1:24Mary as your wife, for the child within her was conceived by the
- 1:29Holy Spirit, and she will have a son, and you are to name him
- 1:34Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.
- 1:39All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord's message through his
- 1:43prophet. Look.
- 1:45The virgin will conceive a child, she will give birth to a
- 1:49son and they will call him Emmanuel, which means God is
- 1:53with us. When Joseph woke up he did as
- 1:56the Angel of the Lord commanded and took his took Mary as his
- 2:00wife, but he did not have sexual relations with her until until
- 2:06her son was born and Joseph named him Jesus.
- 2:11This is the word of God for the people of God.
- 2:13Thanks be to God, Amen. There will be a day when the
- 2:22House of God, like a mountain or the hills, will be lifted up as
- 2:30a river flows ever to the sea. All the nations will flow to him
- 2:36like a living stream. There will be a day when the
- 2:41Prince of Peace, we'll break the bow and sword and make all wars
- 2:48cease, and our guns and bombs will be melted down into
- 2:54plowshares for the harvest. How we're longing for it now.
- 3:00When we'll go to the mountain of God, We'll walk in his ways.
- 3:06We'll look on his face. We'll go to the mountain of God.
- 3:12We'll cast down our pride and walk in his light on the
- 3:17mountain of God. This is how Caroline Cobb's song
- 3:24There Will Be a Day captures the longing that we feel for the day
- 3:31that's coming, when God will come again and restore all
- 3:37things. And we truly know the peace that
- 3:41we long to feel and which which feels so elusive in today's
- 3:48world. And I think if we're honest, we
- 3:52acknowledge that longing for peace, but I think there's also
- 3:57a corresponding agreement that we make that, that we can't
- 4:01really know peace like that until that day, right, Until the
- 4:07day the Lord comes again. And I, I understand how we get
- 4:11there. When you look around at the
- 4:14world all around us, it's, it's chaos, right?
- 4:17There's wars, there's economic stress, there's division and
- 4:22polarization, there's natural disasters.
- 4:26And even closer to home, right there, there are
- 4:30misunderstandings within relationships, children and and
- 4:36even parents who are making what we see as the wrong decisions
- 4:44the the competing demands of of our faith with the world.
- 4:50When we see and and feel and live among those things all the
- 4:55time, it tends to lead us to react in three different ways,
- 5:00right? We, we react with anxiety, with
- 5:04anger and sometimes even with shame, right?
- 5:09Those are natural reactions we have.
- 5:12But but I think underneath each of them, underneath each of
- 5:17those reactions, there it's a form of, of fear or fear that
- 5:22causes us to push back in anger or to withdraw in shame or, or,
- 5:30or to spin right, paralyzed in our anxiety.
- 5:35I I think this this is where Joseph is when we're introduced
- 5:41to him in the midst of the Christmas story in Matthew, his
- 5:46fiance, the one betrothed to marry him.
- 5:50She, she winds up pregnant and all Joseph knows that he's not
- 5:57the one who made that happen. We could expect Joseph to react
- 6:03in any of the three ways. We were just talking about or,
- 6:06or maybe even in a combination of those three Anger, anxiety,
- 6:11shame. We could expect Joseph to get
- 6:15angry at Mary's assumed unfaithfulness and betrayal.
- 6:20We, we could expect Joseph to feel anxious about what people
- 6:25were going to say or do when they found out.
- 6:31We could expect Joseph to experience the shame of being
- 6:36rejected or like he wasn't good enough for Mary.
- 6:43But I think it's as Joseph is weighing his options, right?
- 6:48He's, he's leaning toward breaking off the engagement
- 6:51quietly because he doesn't want Mary to bear the weight of the
- 6:55shame and disgrace that would come once the news got out.
- 7:01It's in the midst of all this that God breaks into Joseph's
- 7:08story and he breaks in with an offer of peace.
- 7:13So I'll look this morning at, at the rest of Joseph's story,
- 7:17right? And so as Joseph is is trying to
- 7:18wrap his mind around all that's happening with his fiance, he's
- 7:23trying to figure out what he's going to do about it.
- 7:28I wonder if Joseph is trying to figure this all out while Mary's
- 7:34down seeing Elizabeth in that time if if that was when all
- 7:41this was happening. But but as all this is
- 7:43happening, an Angel interrupts Joseph's deliberations and and
- 7:49appears to him in a dream. And it's through the Angel that
- 7:55the word of the Lord comes to Joseph, right?
- 7:59The Angel speaks directly to that fear.
- 8:02Beneath the mixture of reactions that Joseph is experiencing, God
- 8:08understands. He understands the fear that
- 8:14would have played on Joseph's emotions, the internal struggle
- 8:18between doing what was right for him and wanting to protect Mary.
- 8:25So the Angel says don't be afraid, don't be afraid to take
- 8:32Mary as your wife the the child within her.
- 8:36It's from the Holy Spirit. She will have a son and you're
- 8:40to name him Jesus because he is going to bring salvation to his
- 8:45people. And in that message, as crazy as
- 8:50it must have seemed to Joseph, God was inviting Joseph into an
- 8:57experience of peace, a peace unlike anything Joseph had
- 9:03experienced before. God was teaching Joseph that
- 9:08that true peace, true peace, it can exist despite the
- 9:15circumstances that exist all around us.
- 9:19God's word to Joseph revealed that God was present in the
- 9:23midst of what was happening. Joseph wasn't in this alone.
- 9:27Mary wasn't in this alone. God was acting in the midst of
- 9:32those those that situation and he was present to Joseph.
- 9:37And, and it's only God's presence, right, that brings us
- 9:41that kind of true peace that we're all longing for.
- 9:48What appeared as a disruption to Joseph, not just to Joseph, but
- 9:55but to his plans for a quiet life as a Craftsman with a wife
- 10:00and a family. What appeared as a disruption to
- 10:04all of that was actually the unfolding of God's plan of
- 10:09redemption, right? It was a plan that had been in
- 10:12the works for far longer than Joseph was aware of it.
- 10:17It went back further than this. But, but listen, it went or
- 10:22sorry, I went back further than this, But listen to these words
- 10:26from the prophet Isaiah, which are quoted there in Matthew 123.
- 10:32It says, look, the virgin will conceive a child, she will give
- 10:38birth to a son, and we'll call him Emmanuel, which means God is
- 10:43with us. Isaiah prophesying some 6 or 700
- 10:50years before Jesus's birth. And like Matthew's version of
- 10:56Jesus, genealogy makes clear it was a plan that stretched back
- 11:01through King David all the way to Abraham and God's promise to
- 11:07Abraham that through him and his family, God was going to bless
- 11:12all the nations of the world. That's why the Angel calls
- 11:19Joseph son of David, right? It's not that his dad was David,
- 11:25but that he was a descendant in the line of David.
- 11:28He, Matthew, makes it clear that Joseph was in this family line
- 11:33from the great King David. And Joseph wasn't just some guy
- 11:37who who happened to get caught up into this bigger story that
- 11:42God was writing. Joseph was chosen just as much
- 11:46as Mary was chosen to play his role in the coming of the
- 11:52Messiah. And so the peace that Joseph is
- 11:56invited to experience, it wasn't just anchored in what God was
- 12:00doing in that moment. It was anchored in the very
- 12:04promises of God. It wasn't just anchored in God's
- 12:09Word, to Joseph in the dream, but in the promises that have
- 12:14been given to God's people, to to David, to Abraham and Sarah,
- 12:20and even further back to Adam and Eve.
- 12:25It was this peace rooted in the presence and the promises of God
- 12:33that allowed Joseph to respond in obedience.
- 12:39Or when it says in verse 24 that when Joseph woke up, he did as
- 12:44the Angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife.
- 12:49This wasn't just a blind obedience, it was it was action
- 12:54based on Joseph's trust that God was with him.
- 13:01God's word to Joseph gave him the courage that he needed to
- 13:07step out in faith to do what God was telling him to do, which
- 13:11went exactly opposite of the direction of what the world
- 13:16would have told Joseph to do. And just like Joseph today, in
- 13:26the midst of of whatever stuff of life we might find ourselves
- 13:31in this morning, we too can trust God's presence with us and
- 13:39His promise to never leave us nor forsake us.
- 13:44We can walk forward in obedience to God's leading, even when we
- 13:49don't understand it all, and even when we don't have all the
- 13:54answers we would hope for. And I wonder this morning, I
- 14:02wonder if there's anyone here who feels like their life has
- 14:07been interrupted. Anybody, anyone whose plans have
- 14:12been disrupted. All right, four of you, 4 of you
- 14:15feel like your life has been interrupted.
- 14:17But, but it's all of us, isn't it?
- 14:19It's all of us in one way or another.
- 14:25And I'm not going to stand here this morning and tell you that
- 14:29that all the circumstances and situations you're facing are
- 14:34because they're what God wants for you.
- 14:39But I am going to tell you that he wants to be with you in it.
- 14:45He wants to be in it with you even in the midst of the
- 14:49situations that are the result of other people's sin or even
- 14:54just the the result of of living life in the midst of the broken
- 14:59world that we live in. God is with you, and He's
- 15:05working things for good, even when we don't quite see how we
- 15:12can trust His presence and His promises, and we can find true
- 15:19peace in Him. I want to encourage you this
- 15:25morning to ask God to draw near to you in the midst of whatever
- 15:31situations you find yourself, to ask Him to to speak His word of
- 15:36truth to you. We have the opportunity this
- 15:41morning to respond to what God is saying and doing by by
- 15:47participating in Holy Communion. But that's not the only way that
- 15:54God draws near to us. I want to encourage you to to
- 16:00develop the the kind of rhythms in your life that that make
- 16:04space for you to experience and know God's presence.
- 16:09Spaces where you can learn to hear his voice speaking to you.
- 16:13You can develop an intimacy with him where where when he speaks,
- 16:18you recognize it could be be through things like prayer and
- 16:23Scripture reading on your own. It could include things like
- 16:27joining a group that helps you walk more closely with God or
- 16:33joining us for one of our prayer sessions where we listen to
- 16:37God's voice in Scripture and respond to him in prayer.
- 16:40That there's any number of ways, but we, we have to choose those
- 16:45things or we have to choose those rhythms.
- 16:49At some level, though, it's going to mean looking less to
- 16:54the world and the things of this world, right?
- 16:58And looking more to God because we trade peace for anxiety,
- 17:06fear, shame and anger when our lives are formed more by the the
- 17:12noise and the news of this world than we are by God's promises,
- 17:18His Word to us, and His presence with us.
- 17:25A number of years after God met Joseph in the midst of his chaos
- 17:32and fears, that little baby Jesus he was telling him was
- 17:39going to be born. He'd grown into a man and he's
- 17:42getting ready to leave his followers as he goes towards his
- 17:46death on the cross. And and Jesus told his
- 17:49followers, he said, I'm leaving you with a gift, Peace of Mind
- 17:56and heart. The peace I give is a gift the
- 18:00world can't give. So don't be troubled.
- 18:05Don't be afraid, right? Jesus offers us a peace that
- 18:12comes from the very presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
- 18:18The God who's not just with us, but the God who's in US.
- 18:22And listen to what Paul told the the young church in Philippi.
- 18:28This is Philippians 4 beginning in verse 6.
- 18:31He says don't worry about anything, instead pray about
- 18:37everything, tell God what you need and thank Him for all He
- 18:41has done. Then, then you will experience
- 18:46God's peace which exceeds anything we can understand.
- 18:52His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ
- 18:56Jesus. And now, dear brothers and
- 18:59sisters, one final thing. This is still Paul, not me, this
- 19:02is Paul. One final thing.
- 19:04Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right and
- 19:11pure and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are
- 19:16excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all
- 19:22you have learned and received from me, everything you heard
- 19:25from me and saw me doing. Then.
- 19:29There it is again. Then the God of peace will be
- 19:34with you. His peace, God's peace, will
- 19:38guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
- 19:43And the peace, the God of peace, will be with you.
- 19:47Because He is Emmanuel, God with us, we can trust His presence
- 19:57and His promise to us. Let's pray together, God.
- 20:07We confess. We confess that we have not
- 20:12always trusted you. We've not always trusted your
- 20:20presence with us. We've not always trusted God
- 20:25that Your word to us is true, but we've not always trusted
- 20:35that we can know peace here in this life, even as we live in
- 20:43this world. We've allowed our our thoughts
- 20:50to be shaped too much by the cares of this world and the
- 20:55noise all around us. Would you help us?
- 21:03Would you help us, Lord, to know your peace, to bring everything
- 21:12to You in prayer, to do all that you have told us to, to set our
- 21:19minds on what is true and honorable and all those things
- 21:24so that we can know your presence with us.
- 21:28We can hear your voice to us in the myriad ways that it comes to
- 21:35us day by day. And we, like Joseph, could step
- 21:43forward in trust and faith and obedience to whatever it is
- 21:51you're asking us to do that we give you ourselves this morning,
- 21:58and we pray this Jesus in your name, Amen.
