- 0:03Speaker 1: Wake up
- 0:05Speaker 1: Good next
- 0:07Speaker 1: Kicking off your day in the best way. It's Sonia
- 0:10Speaker 1: and Joakim on the shock circuit. It's Friday, it's Friday.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I'm so happy it's the weekend. There is a game
- 0:16Speaker 1: we can watch together, Sonia, at 9 a.m. Mexico against Korea. Oh,
- 0:21Speaker 1: it's a good game. South Korea is going to be
- 0:23Speaker 1: strong or what? I don't know. OK, alright, let's go.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I'm ready. Singapore's number one hit music station.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Alright, so if you're a gamer and if you're awake
- 0:35Speaker 1: at 6:19 a.m. on the 19th of June, probably not
- 0:38Speaker 1: asleep yet. Hang in there for 6 more days because
- 0:43Speaker 1: 25th of June, that is where the pre-orders for Grand
- 0:47Speaker 1: Theft Auto 6. That is when it will drop and
- 0:51Speaker 1: you can do so on your PlayStation, your PC, whichever
- 0:55Speaker 1: gaming device you have. OK, not, not to be a
- 0:57Speaker 1: Debbie Downer, right, but you know, you pre-order.
- 1:00Speaker 1: You can still postpone, right? Yeah, right, I mean, technically speaking,
- 1:05Speaker 1: to be honest, they've been saying November for quite a
- 1:07Speaker 1: while already. Yeah, it better be locked in. Yeah, so
- 1:10Speaker 1: when they give us the official official November date, I'm
- 1:14Speaker 1: taking leave.
- 1:15Speaker 1: You're telling me first, is it? No, no, they, they
- 1:18Speaker 1: did say November of 2026, right? OK, OK, just, just checking.
- 1:21Speaker 1: So that means by then all those GTA jokes will stop? Hopefully,
- 1:25Speaker 1: hopefully it will stop because they got 5 more months
- 1:28Speaker 1: to perfect GTA 6 before it drops to the entire world.
- 1:33Speaker 1: So here's the only issue, um, I think everyone, the
- 1:36Speaker 1: world has high expectations after waiting.
- 1:39Speaker 1: For so long. So the pressure is on. I, I
- 1:42Speaker 1: don't know how they're feeling right now, man. I don't
- 1:44Speaker 1: envy them. Can I ask, Jeremy GTA 6? Yeah. I
- 1:47Speaker 1: think so. Yeah. It was something that he played before.
- 1:51Speaker 1: What was that one that he that he played? I
- 1:53Speaker 1: don't know what he played with him. Call of Duty. Yes,
- 1:55Speaker 1: Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, the whole game series
- 1:59Speaker 1: as a whole, uh, it changed the gaming industry.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I'm sure. OK, well, very highly anticipated. Even for me
- 2:07Speaker 1: as a non-gamer, I'm curious to see what's up. Like
- 2:10Speaker 1: I said, this weekend marks the start of Juju World
- 2:14Speaker 1: in Singapore and Joakim stared back at me blankly. Can
- 2:17Speaker 1: you please explain to us uninformed people, OK, what is
- 2:21Speaker 1: a Juju world? Actually, I think most of you tuning
- 2:24Speaker 1: in might know what it is. So Joe, when you're aware, right?
- 2:27Speaker 1: Right? Um, did you see a lot of commotion about
- 2:31Speaker 1: plushy flowers here in Singapore at the flower market and
- 2:34Speaker 1: how a lot of people had very ugly behavior trying
- 2:37Speaker 1: to snatch stuff up and resell the Singapore specials and
- 2:40Speaker 1: all that. I was face palming in the mountains in Bhutan,
- 2:44Speaker 1: very embarrassing. I, I will have to say when it
- 2:47Speaker 1: was time for me to go and attend it, so
- 2:49Speaker 1: I wanted to go check it out with my friend, OK.
- 2:52Speaker 1: And CG Hendry is an artist. She is lovely. Um,
- 2:55Speaker 1: her art just makes you smile, you know, it's the
- 2:58Speaker 1: kind of thing that gives you joy. And I think
- 3:00Speaker 1: the intention of them teaming up with our friends over
- 3:03Speaker 1: at IMba at Gardens by the Bay.
- 3:06Speaker 1: was to bring that joy to Singapore, you know, and
- 3:09Speaker 1: to make people immersed in art and still enjoy it
- 3:12Speaker 1: and take home a collectible at the same time. That
- 3:13Speaker 1: was the idea. It was, it was not meant to
- 3:16Speaker 1: be like people rushing to, to compete, to snatch it
- 3:20Speaker 1: up and then resell it for like $200. It was
- 3:22Speaker 1: not meant to be like that. So I think, um,
- 3:25Speaker 1: the perspective of it was, was, wow, Singaporeans are awful,
- 3:29Speaker 1: you know.
- 3:30Speaker 1: But I guess at the end of the day, there
- 3:32Speaker 1: were actually more than just Singaporeans. I think there were
- 3:34Speaker 1: a lot of tourists as well. They were trying to
- 3:37Speaker 1: get their hands on it because they can't get it
- 3:38Speaker 1: in their own country and trying to trying to resell exactly.
- 3:42Speaker 1: So I think there was a bit of a misconception
- 3:44Speaker 1: there that only Singaporeans were displaying this behavior.
- 3:48Speaker 1: When I went, I was a bit hesitant because I
- 3:50Speaker 1: was thinking to myself like, I don't want to be
- 3:51Speaker 1: stuck in that situation. But thankfully, they, they actually changed
- 3:55Speaker 1: the rules and they tidied it up so that people
- 3:59Speaker 1: will have to only come in during your time slot
- 4:01Speaker 1: and no other time slot. And you cannot do walk-ins
- 4:04Speaker 1: and stuff at one point because they, they already put
- 4:06Speaker 1: it out there.
- 4:07Speaker 1: To which people were still going up saying like, I
- 4:09Speaker 1: will wait here until you let me in, that kind
- 4:12Speaker 1: of behavior, you know, but you won't go in. You
- 4:14Speaker 1: won't get in because they already said sorry, it's full
- 4:17Speaker 1: and you have no appointments. Yeah, yeah, exactly, thank you, sir, ma'am, please.
- 4:21Speaker 1: So I think learning from that and how people here
- 4:24Speaker 1: in Singapore obviously love CJ Hendry's art, right? Juju.
- 4:27Speaker 1: is also another brainchild by CJ Hendry, the same artist.
- 4:31Speaker 1: So think Labubu but cuter. Yeah, I'm looking at the designs.
- 4:37Speaker 1: And to be honest with you, yeah, if the rules,
- 4:40Speaker 1: if the rules aren't set in place for this launch,
- 4:43Speaker 1: good luck. Exactly. So they are this one already has
- 4:45Speaker 1: a global like massive following, OK.
- 4:48Speaker 1: So the pop-up is gonna be like an inflatable experience.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I'm not paid to say this, by the way, I,
- 4:54Speaker 1: I'm going as a paying customer. Um, it's a, it's
- 4:57Speaker 1: a collectible toy series as you saw, but they inflated
- 5:00Speaker 1: it and made it massive. So it's like a massive
- 5:02Speaker 1: Juju World playground, and I think there's going to be
- 5:05Speaker 1: Singapore special collectibles that are available. So please, please show
- 5:10Speaker 1: the staff some mercy. Don't.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Display bad behavior towards them. They're just there to work.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Did they say they haven't. So, so I actually asked the,
- 5:22Speaker 1: the organizer that same question as well and they said, uh,
- 5:25Speaker 1: more will be revealed at the actual event. Um, but,
- 5:29Speaker 1: but she did say, they did say rather, please don't
- 5:32Speaker 1: offer to buy your.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Friend stuff like don't, don't, don't go in there and
- 5:36Speaker 1: be like I want 10 because I think there's definitely
- 5:37Speaker 1: going to be a limit. Can I ask where is
- 5:40Speaker 1: it being staged by the Bay at Imbamba, OK, I
- 5:43Speaker 1: have to say something though. The logo for Imba needs
- 5:45Speaker 1: to change. It looks a lot like New Bahru. I
- 5:48Speaker 1: got confused you mean the font, the font, the font, yeah,
- 5:51Speaker 1: but I guess New Bahru is a much longer word, so.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Because when I saw the BA, I thought, oh, new
- 5:56Speaker 1: Bahru already. Yeah, exactly. I didn't think of that. I
- 5:59Speaker 1: didn't think of that. You should let them know that feedback?
- 6:03Speaker 1: I don't think they'll take the feedback. Euro Summer right
- 6:06Speaker 1: here on 987, which I have sworn I must go
- 6:08Speaker 1: back at least once every two years for Euro Summer now.
- 6:11Speaker 1: It's around this time, right? It's, yeah, when I went
- 6:13Speaker 1: for my honeymoon. It started at the end of like, OK,
- 6:17Speaker 1: so I had a friend who went for her honeymoon
- 6:19Speaker 1: as well earlier in May, like before my wedding, and
- 6:22Speaker 1: she made it back in time for my wedding.
- 6:24Speaker 1: She said that it was too cold. Like it was
- 6:26Speaker 1: really too cold. Cannot even wear your swimwear and sit
- 6:30Speaker 1: by the beach. Like you can, but it's pretty freezing.
- 6:35Speaker 1: All I know is uh very soon over in Belgium,
- 6:36Speaker 1: it's gonna be Tomorrowland again. Yes, that's right. That's right.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Also in Europe in the month of July, to which
- 6:42Speaker 1: I want to attend at least one Tomorrowland in my lifetime. Yes, yes,
- 6:46Speaker 1: I've been saying this the last 1213 years of my life.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I'm very resigned to think that I'll be those 40
- 6:53Speaker 1: year old men who have never, they'll be there. Actually, I, I,
- 6:58Speaker 1: I have, I want to dispute that. In your 40s, right, you,
- 7:02Speaker 1: you might think like, OK, um, I'm going to be
- 7:05Speaker 1: too tired for this, or I can't breathe anymore or whatever, OK.
- 7:09Speaker 1: I don't know what it's going to be like yet,
- 7:10Speaker 1: but I will say in your 40s, you have more money, right?
- 7:14Speaker 1: So if you have more.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Money equals, you're going to enjoy yourself more at such
- 7:18Speaker 1: festivals because you are not going to go for general
- 7:21Speaker 1: admission and I can pay for those cabin rooms to
- 7:25Speaker 1: sleep properly in. Actually, I think those are sold out
- 7:28Speaker 1: very early on. So how people do it is they
- 7:31Speaker 1: do a very nice hotel like somewhere nearby. I mean,
- 7:34Speaker 1: if you have the budget for it, do a very
- 7:36Speaker 1: nice hotel somewhere nearby and you arrange for transportation. Yeah,
- 7:39Speaker 1: I'm looking at the.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Up this year, we're talking the likes of Calvin Harris,
- 7:44Speaker 1: we got John Summit, we got David Guetta, Dimitri Vegas.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Basically all the big names will descend upon Tomorrowland Belgium.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Even the Chainsmokers are in the lineup this year. I
- 7:56Speaker 1: think um there's a mystery guest yet to be announced
- 7:59Speaker 1: for weekend one. They did tease a surprise DJ, so
- 8:03Speaker 1: I wonder who that is. I'm in right now.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Or Tiesto, yes. Before we go to Border Crime, I
- 8:12Speaker 1: have a very important question to ask you. Am I hungry?
- 8:15Speaker 1: Only because we played Le Seraphim November 28th. K-pop fans
- 8:19Speaker 1: here in Singapore, they have a problem because they're convicted.
- 8:23Speaker 1: They have to decide whether they go for Le Seraphim
- 8:25Speaker 1: or Baby Monster. Oh my gosh, which one would you
- 8:28Speaker 1: go for?
- 8:30Speaker 1: This is tough. This is tough. Um, I might pick
- 8:34Speaker 1: Le Seraphim. I might pick Le Seraphim. Fair enough, fair enough.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe, maybe it's, it's a hard one,
- 8:40Speaker 1: but I think like the Seraphim's music, I mean, I
- 8:42Speaker 1: quite like it, so maybe I'll go for that. And
- 8:44Speaker 1: my reasoning is because Baby Monster is still very young,
- 8:47Speaker 1: they will definitely come back for a show and all that. OK,
- 8:51Speaker 1: that's it. Are you ready for the most Bodo crime ever? OK,
- 8:55Speaker 1: here we go. Bodo crime, crime, crime.
- 8:59Speaker 1: OK, this took place in the online space, OK, but
- 9:03Speaker 1: here in Singapore. OK, so like a scam, is it? No, no, not,
- 9:06Speaker 1: not a scam. Not a scam, not online scam, scam, no. Um,
- 9:10Speaker 1: so how would I describe it? Is it? Yes. The internet, uh, that,
- 9:16Speaker 1: that's a tough one, man. Um.
- 9:19Speaker 1: The icky internet space.
- 9:24Speaker 1: She put me in that spot, man. I don't know,
- 9:26Speaker 1: like any other negative words that start with I. OK.
- 9:30Speaker 1: You know, when it comes to playing pranks on someone, Sonia,
- 9:34Speaker 1: who would you not want to prank?
- 9:38Speaker 1: Our government minister. Perfect. Yes. Why would I want to
- 9:43Speaker 1: prank the minister, right? Exactly. I mean, you have all
- 9:46Speaker 1: this God-given free time in your life and free will, yes.
- 9:51Speaker 1: The last thing you want to do is to play
- 9:53Speaker 1: a prank on a government official. I was gonna say, OK, yes, yes, also,
- 9:58Speaker 1: you know, Singapore, Singapore civil defense.
- 10:01Speaker 1: It's just anyone in the government service. So yesterday while
- 10:04Speaker 1: having my lunch, took a sip of tea. Then I
- 10:08Speaker 1: saw this CNA article and I spat it out. Oh no,
- 10:11Speaker 1: what happened? A man has pleaded guilty. He admits to
- 10:16Speaker 1: sending Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, a doctored photo of
- 10:22Speaker 1: Marina Bay Sands on fire. He as a prank. Why?
- 10:28Speaker 1: Why even do that exactly?
- 10:31Speaker 1: What was his goal? I have no idea. Do I
- 10:35Speaker 1: look like him to you? Come on, I mean, stop it.
- 10:38Speaker 1: OK, yo, but seriously, like, did he, does he have any, um,
- 10:43Speaker 1: mental conditions, or I mean, I don't know how looking
- 10:46Speaker 1: at his picture and, and, and all the court reports
- 10:49Speaker 1: and all that. This guy is of, of sound mind.
- 10:50Speaker 1: I think he's normal. OK, that's even worse actually. Yeah,
- 10:53Speaker 1: so I, I just wonder what was the inspiration behind
- 10:56Speaker 1: that besides to AI doctor a photo of Marina Bay
- 11:00Speaker 1: Sands on fire and hey, let's just.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Attended to senior Minister Lee's Facebook page. So you don't
- 11:06Speaker 1: think that it was like a bet gone wrong or
- 11:08Speaker 1: like a no, no, no, a bet between friends that
- 11:11Speaker 1: went wrong like truth or dare. So I guess one
- 11:13Speaker 1: of Senior Minister Lee's social media team administrators saw that photo,
- 11:18Speaker 1: made a police report, and now there you go. Well,
- 11:21Speaker 1: it will take them all of 2 minutes to find him,
- 11:23Speaker 1: to be honest. So I don't, I don't think he
- 11:26Speaker 1: was attempting to hide though. What was his plan? Yeah,
- 11:29Speaker 1: let's hope this is the
- 11:31Speaker 1: I won't say it's the first, but let's hope this
- 11:32Speaker 1: is the last time we read of a case like this. Yeah, and,
- 11:38Speaker 1: I don't think this was the first. I think there
- 11:39Speaker 1: are other people who have done this before, but this
- 11:41Speaker 1: one is quite palm worthy. And that was Bodo crime, crime, crime,
- 11:46Speaker 1: crime on the y internet space of Singapore of Singapore. Sorry.
- 11:54Speaker 1: My vocab will get better with other letters. If you're
- 11:57Speaker 1: face palming, we are palming along with you. Yeah. And
- 12:02Speaker 1: just yesterday afternoon or so, this was announced, to which
- 12:05Speaker 1: I'm very sure people have started projecting their leave dates
- 12:09Speaker 1: for 2027. Yeah, but I'm looking at the public holidays, right? Yes, yes,
- 12:15Speaker 1: very year. I know, so there are 11.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Predicted public holidays for 2027 so far, um, but there
- 12:22Speaker 1: will be five long weekends that are available in 2027,
- 12:27Speaker 1: which I guess answers your question la Jokim. OK, so
- 12:30Speaker 1: New Year's Day of next year is on a Friday,
- 12:32Speaker 1: which is 1st, great. OK, Chinese New Year, the first
- 12:37Speaker 1: one on Saturday. I know, I know this actually this
- 12:40Speaker 1: happens every once in a while, like the Saturday, Sunday.
- 12:43Speaker 1: OK, so the good news is it's Saturday, Sunday, then
- 12:46Speaker 1: the following Monday will be a public holiday as well
- 12:49Speaker 1: because there's day 2 on Sunday. Yes, but my question is,
- 12:53Speaker 1: usually we get day 1 and 2, right? Yeah, yeah,
- 12:55Speaker 1: so we get both days. So we get both days.
- 12:57Speaker 1: So you get Monday and Tuesday off. No, no, no.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Next year is only Monday. That's what I mean. That's
- 13:03Speaker 1: because usually if it falls on a weekday, it's.
- 13:06Speaker 1: On day two you're off, right? Yeah, I think I
- 13:08Speaker 1: mean for Chinese New Year, it will be best if
- 13:11Speaker 1: it falls on Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Yeah dude, man. So the gods don't help us a
- 13:17Speaker 1: bit more or the lunar, the lunar calendar. Hari Rayawassa
- 13:25Speaker 1: on a Wednesday, March 10th. Good Friday is on a Friday,
- 13:29Speaker 1: of course, March 26th.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Can I give you the week where most people won't
- 13:34Speaker 1: come to work? Yes, yes, go for it. That's the
- 13:37Speaker 1: week of Hari Raya Haji on May 17th and Vesak
- 13:41Speaker 1: Day on May 20th. So basically you've got Monday, you've
- 13:44Speaker 1: got Thursday. All you got to do is to fill
- 13:46Speaker 1: up your other dates in between. So Tuesday, Wednesday, and
- 13:48Speaker 1: Friday take leave. Yeah, National Day, however, is on a Monday. So.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, you know, it is what it is,
- 13:59Speaker 1: but you still get a long weekend for that. You
- 14:01Speaker 1: still got a long weekend. On August 9th, Manjulah Singapura.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Then next day go to.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I know, right? I know. But you see, the, the
- 14:10Speaker 1: thing is, a lot of Singaporeans will go overseas during
- 14:14Speaker 1: National Day. That's the thing. If they don't have a
- 14:16Speaker 1: ticket to go and physically watch it, right? Honestly, I
- 14:19Speaker 1: think a lot of people escape and they go for
- 14:21Speaker 1: a holiday. That particular National Day, they'll be flying out
- 14:25Speaker 1: to Bangkok. Exactly, yeah, yeah, Thailand. They will use the
- 14:28Speaker 1: Monday as a public holiday, then go back to work. So, um,
- 14:31Speaker 1: Christmas on a Saturday.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Wait, do we get an off in lieu for that?
- 14:37Speaker 1: We do we? I'm curious. We do, right? Hello boss.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Yeah, Jesus is asking.
- 14:45Speaker 1: I love how we're discussing our plans for next year
- 14:48Speaker 1: with you here on 987. I mean, this is a very,
- 14:52Speaker 1: this is a very common thing, right? Like, why would
- 14:54Speaker 1: we not want to talk about it? We definitely want
- 14:56Speaker 1: to try and predict when we are going for holiday. By,
- 14:59Speaker 1: by the way, just to rub salt on our wounds,
- 15:00Speaker 1: I forgot this earlier. Labor Day next year, May 1st,
- 15:04Speaker 1: it falls on a Saturday. I am quite sure that
- 15:08Speaker 1: your company will give you an additional day, like in
- 15:12Speaker 1: like in lie or something.
- 15:13Speaker 1: I hope so. Fingers crossed, you know, but hey, um,
- 15:16Speaker 1: all the information is out there listed very nicely on, uh,
- 15:19Speaker 1: many of your media platforms for you to start planning 2027.
- 15:23Speaker 1: I mean, we're already midway through this year. So I
- 15:25Speaker 1: say first, next year, May 17th, the week of Hari
- 15:28Speaker 1: Raya Haji and Rak Day. Yeah, I'm gonna take leave, OK,
- 15:31Speaker 1: to go where? I don't know. Stay at home, right?
- 15:33Speaker 1: and think later. The next thing I know you're, you're
- 15:37Speaker 1: staying at home playing games.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Probably right, right? I think by then I'll have finished
- 15:42Speaker 1: GTA 6. By then I'm finished already. I would think so. OK,
- 15:45Speaker 1: so currently as it stands when it comes to our electricity,
- 15:49Speaker 1: it's going at $29.72 per kilowatt hour currently, OK? But
- 15:56Speaker 1: according to the powers that be, it's expected to rise
- 15:59Speaker 1: the next quarter and of course there are
- 16:03Speaker 1: What's the word? I won't say blaming or crediting it to,
- 16:06Speaker 1: but the the cause of it, yeah, the result of
- 16:09Speaker 1: the tensions between the USA and Iran to which yesterday
- 16:14Speaker 1: the US and Iran signed the agreement to open the
- 16:17Speaker 1: Strait of Hormuz.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Hopefully the next quarter, it might go down a little bit. Yeah, yeah. Look,
- 16:23Speaker 1: I mean, these things take time to take effect, you know,
- 16:26Speaker 1: so we can't just expect like one day and it
- 16:28Speaker 1: turns around. But I think more households are taking up
- 16:31Speaker 1: the fixed price contracts right now. It's I guess.
- 16:34Speaker 1: I mean, adulting, right, you'll find that for example, when
- 16:37Speaker 1: you take a loan for your, I don't know, your
- 16:39Speaker 1: house or something, once, once in a while, you gotta,
- 16:42Speaker 1: you gotta revise the interest rate, right? Yeah, you know
- 16:45Speaker 1: your plan you're studying plans like, yeah, yeah. Do you
- 16:49Speaker 1: want to take or you want to take floating or
- 16:51Speaker 1: what do you want to take, it's telcos.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Insurance plans, your bills and all that, but, OK, this one,
- 16:58Speaker 1: whether it's high or low in terms of our electricity consumption,
- 17:03Speaker 1: use it wisely. Like if you're leaving the house, turn
- 17:06Speaker 1: off everything, everything off. Even your computers and all that
- 17:09Speaker 1: on standby mode, it's still consuming your chargers as well,
- 17:13Speaker 1: I think.
- 17:14Speaker 1: The mistake that a lot of us make is that,
- 17:16Speaker 1: you know, you just charge your phone, then you unplug
- 17:18Speaker 1: it and just toss it, right? But you don't actually
- 17:19Speaker 1: turn off the, you don't switch off the main switch
- 17:24Speaker 1: plug installed in your home. Exactly. So, well, we just
- 17:28Speaker 1: have to lock in on this, I guess. No choice.
- 17:30Speaker 1: We just have to ride this wave for now. And
- 17:32Speaker 1: if you want the agreement between the US and Iran,
- 17:37Speaker 1: they got you covered yet another interesting ranking.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Has surfaced and Singapore has yet again taken top spot.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Which survey? Not Cockarelli, but anyway, um, this has got
- 17:51Speaker 1: to do with competitiveness. Now, it could be read in
- 17:54Speaker 1: many different ways because, um, having a competitive industry in
- 17:58Speaker 1: terms of being a competitive country in terms of business
- 18:01Speaker 1: is a good thing for us, right, worldwide, especially in
- 18:03Speaker 1: a global standing.
- 18:04Speaker 1: But it also got me thinking about the competitiveness of
- 18:08Speaker 1: individuals here in Singapore. Oh very competitive. But do you
- 18:13Speaker 1: think it's, it's limited to just Singaporeans or it's an
- 18:15Speaker 1: Asian thing? Because I mean, I know friends in
- 18:17Speaker 1: In Hong Kong, in, you know, other, other countries that
- 18:20Speaker 1: are also very competitive. I actually think it's an Asian
- 18:23Speaker 1: thing and here in Singapore, we feel the aftereffects because
- 18:26Speaker 1: for millennials, look, how many of us grew up with
- 18:30Speaker 1: our parents saying, ah, you see, Auntie Nancy's son doing
- 18:33Speaker 1: very well, ah, what are you doing? What are you doing?
- 18:36Speaker 1: Not Auntie Nancy.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Sonia, uncle Gilbert's daughter went to this very good school.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Where are you now? That's, that's comparison because of competitiveness.
- 18:46Speaker 1: It will make you competitive. No, exactly. Or either that
- 18:49Speaker 1: have the opposite reaction, you know, you might just have
- 18:51Speaker 1: a lot of resentment in general. 21st century context. Wow,
- 18:55Speaker 1: Beatrice got so many followers.
- 18:59Speaker 1: You do not want to see what Joakim is doing
- 19:01Speaker 1: right now.
- 19:03Speaker 1: He's literally posing. Beatrice Chanel. Please take your hand off
- 19:08Speaker 1: your hip. It's not working for me. It's giving me nightmares.
- 19:11Speaker 1: I'm just giving you 21st century influencer competitiveness here in Singapore.
- 19:15Speaker 1: We're gonna address this and competitiveness, of course, this addresses
- 19:20Speaker 1: multiple different things. We'll we'll address this in a while. Now,
- 19:22Speaker 1: I'm sure you must have seen this article already. In
- 19:25Speaker 1: terms of competitive economies around the world, Singapore is doing
- 19:29Speaker 1: very well.
- 19:30Speaker 1: We have ranked 1st again in world competitiveness and we
- 19:35Speaker 1: took top spot for business efficiency, which is a very
- 19:38Speaker 1: good sign for us. Well done, Singapore. Yes, congratulations to us.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Gonna pat pat ourselves on the back for that because
- 19:44Speaker 1: in this context, it's good to have a competitive economy.
- 19:48Speaker 1: In 2nd place, it's Hong Kong and in 3rd, Switzerland. Nice,
- 19:53Speaker 1: but Switzerland actually dropped 2 spots to 3rd place, I
- 19:56Speaker 1: believe this this time around.
- 19:58Speaker 1: But anyway, um, you know, it's, it's good news for
- 20:00Speaker 1: us because, you know, business efficiency is something that is
- 20:03Speaker 1: key for us, especially in such a small country, right?
- 20:06Speaker 1: But it also got us thinking just by looking at
- 20:09Speaker 1: the word competitiveness. Go to take things slightly out of
- 20:12Speaker 1: context here, OK? Do you think we as people, we
- 20:16Speaker 1: as Singaporeans, are we competitive?
- 20:19Speaker 1: As Joakim Gomez, yes, you, I'm super competitive in terms
- 20:23Speaker 1: of what, like even sports and everything, yeah, sports. OK,
- 20:27Speaker 1: so when I was younger, I realized I was fighting
- 20:30Speaker 1: every single battle, you know, everything I want to win,
- 20:34Speaker 1: so self-imposed, yeah, but as I got older, I realized, right,
- 20:38Speaker 1: I'm super competitive in the battles of life and work,
- 20:43Speaker 1: especially those I know that I should win.
- 20:46Speaker 1: OK, if I lose, I get really angry about it.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Why do you feel like you should win though? Yeah,
- 20:52Speaker 1: I see that that's the thing. Oh, that's the thing
- 20:53Speaker 1: that you're trying to figure out. OK, but I feel like, OK,
- 20:56Speaker 1: for example, if it's a, it's a work audition to
- 20:58Speaker 1: MC something, I feel I should win.
- 21:03Speaker 1: And if I, OK, if I lose, right, and, and
- 21:06Speaker 1: this is very honest, I'm sharing a bit too much.
- 21:08Speaker 1: If I lose, I'll always say, oh, who got the job? Oh, Sonia, OK, OK, yeah, fine. No, no, no,
- 21:12Speaker 1: this is me. Who got the job? Someone else. I'm like, huh? Oh,
- 21:16Speaker 1: you mean, OK, OK. So, so over the years, over
- 21:20Speaker 1: the years, I, I completely understand what you mean, by
- 21:22Speaker 1: the way, because I think in an industry like ours,
- 21:25Speaker 1: a lot of our self-worth is tied to our job,
- 21:28Speaker 1: meaning if we don't.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Get a job is a zero-sum game, right? Like if
- 21:32Speaker 1: I don't get a job, someone else will get the job,
- 21:34Speaker 1: and we are basically selling ourselves as the product. So
- 21:36Speaker 1: it's not easy also in terms of your mental health
- 21:38Speaker 1: because you will take it personally, you know, you're like, hey,
- 21:41Speaker 1: is it because they don't like me or what, you know?
- 21:44Speaker 1: And that piece of the pie here in Singapore is
- 21:46Speaker 1: so small, it's plenty of people are trying to eat
- 21:49Speaker 1: that piece of the pie. Of course, of course. And
- 21:52Speaker 1: so I don't know whether this might help, but in
- 21:54Speaker 1: terms of like changing mindsets, right?
- 21:57Speaker 1: I know that sometimes it's very bad for your mental
- 21:59Speaker 1: health when you feel like you've lost something, you know, you're,
- 22:02Speaker 1: you're just like mourning that loss, but just try and
- 22:04Speaker 1: move on quickly lah. I think that's that's the best way.
- 22:06Speaker 1: It's tough, but I think it's very tough to take
- 22:09Speaker 1: the competitiveness out of here in Singapore. We're like born
- 22:12Speaker 1: with it or something, you know, this is like the
- 22:14Speaker 1: Singaporean starter pack. We definitely got a bit of competitiveness there.
- 22:18Speaker 1: So give us a call 669-11987 just by observing your friends,
- 22:24Speaker 1: your family.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Even yourself. Do you feel like we're generally very competitive?
- 22:30Speaker 1: In exchange, we would love to give you a $100
- 22:32Speaker 1: dining experience. We've been talking about this one all week.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Beautiful views up there. Las Palmas over at Courtyard by
- 22:39Speaker 1: Marriott at Novena. Do you think we are very competitive? Yes,
- 22:44Speaker 1: that's the question here today. I mean, we don't know
- 22:47Speaker 1: whether it's attributed to just the way that we were.
- 22:50Speaker 1: You know, that we were raised, like this is a
- 22:52Speaker 1: very Asian thing to be super competitive. What's going on, right?
- 23:00Speaker 1: and there's toxic competition, yes, for sure.
- 23:05Speaker 1: It's in our heads too. Like the biggest competition could
- 23:07Speaker 1: be ourselves. That's why there's a very fine line between
- 23:10Speaker 1: the two, that most of the time people cross, trust. So, uh,
- 23:15Speaker 1: we're opening up phone lines in our WhatsApp text channel
- 23:18Speaker 1: as well. Let's head to our text first. One coming
- 23:20Speaker 1: in from Bintu Hisham. What up, bro? Morning, you two.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I loved hearing today's topic because I'm driving, and Singaporeans
- 23:28Speaker 1: are definitely competitive. We don't even like giving way when driving.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Somehow it is always a competition. It's true. I know,
- 23:36Speaker 1: it's true, you know, OK, when I'm in the, when
- 23:39Speaker 1: I'm in the privacy of my car, right, OK, here's
- 23:41Speaker 1: what happens. Sometimes people give way, sometimes people don't, OK.
- 23:45Speaker 1: And you know, when, when there are drivers that attempt
- 23:49Speaker 1: to like cut you as well or like they're very
- 23:51Speaker 1: rude about it, right, and they actually cut, then sometimes
- 23:55Speaker 1: I'll be like, Oh, cut one person, then shook lah,
- 23:57Speaker 1: is it like in the confines of my car, obviously.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Then when I try to cut and no one wants
- 24:05Speaker 1: to give way, right? I'll be like,
- 24:08Speaker 1: Oh, so you don't want to give way, ah, OK, OK,
- 24:11Speaker 1: never mind, I cut another person.
- 24:15Speaker 1: I mean, do you not have this internal conversation in
- 24:16Speaker 1: your head? I don't drive. No, I mean, OK, to
- 24:19Speaker 1: the drivers out there who are tuned in, who are
- 24:21Speaker 1: tuned in.
- 24:22Speaker 1: I mean, it does feel like a competition. Why can't
- 24:24Speaker 1: you just let one car in? I mean, you know,
- 24:27Speaker 1: sometimes I have these inner thoughts that I, I say
- 24:30Speaker 1: out loud in my car and I'm like, will it
- 24:32Speaker 1: kill you to just let one person pass? I feel
- 24:36Speaker 1: like this whole rants can be a podcast I mean
- 24:39Speaker 1: it is true. What you're gonna be, you're gonna add
- 24:41Speaker 1: on 2 seconds to the time taken to get to
- 24:44Speaker 1: your destination.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Calm down. OK, I'm just channeling, you know, the real
- 24:47Speaker 1: life situation. We can all hear it. Wanna say hello
- 24:50Speaker 1: to John. Definitely, guys, we're living in a competitive society,
- 24:54Speaker 1: be it at work or at socials. I totally agree
- 24:58Speaker 1: that we need a sense of competitiveness to challenge ourselves,
- 25:01Speaker 1: learning new things and fight for what we want or deserve,
- 25:05Speaker 1: but also at the same time, we should be able
- 25:06Speaker 1: to accept losing.
- 25:08Speaker 1: And learn from it. Being complacent or a sore loser
- 25:11Speaker 1: does not help us move forward in life. You're so right, John,
- 25:15Speaker 1: and I think in a world of social media where
- 25:17Speaker 1: people just flex what they want to show you online,
- 25:20Speaker 1: you don't really know what the real story is. Like,
- 25:22Speaker 1: are they really living this life or is it just
- 25:25Speaker 1: a facade, right? On the topic of losing, do you
- 25:28Speaker 1: think you're a gracious loser or a sore loser?
- 25:32Speaker 1: What am I losing? Because I've been losing paddle games
- 25:35Speaker 1: a lot. And uh, you know, I've just kind of
- 25:37Speaker 1: gotten used to it. So here's the thing.
- 25:41Speaker 1: I'm competitive, but does my body allow me to actually,
- 25:44Speaker 1: do I have the skill to be at that level? No.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Can I throw you back to, I think this was 2022. Yeah,
- 25:53Speaker 1: you and I did something for Biore's sunscreen. Yes, yes.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Was it Captain's ball or oh my God, have you
- 26:02Speaker 1: seen Sonia playing captain's ball, people?
- 26:05Speaker 1: Wow. Disclaimer, I don't actually know how to play captain's ball. Yeah,
- 26:10Speaker 1: but she did not want to lose. I've never seen
- 26:12Speaker 1: her fight for a ball so hard in my life
- 26:16Speaker 1: until I saw her playing that game of a client activation,
- 26:20Speaker 1: not like for a medal or what, no.
- 26:24Speaker 1: I don't think there was even a pride. Was there
- 26:26Speaker 1: even a prize? No trophy or nothing.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Whoa, hey, I kayaked for my life also, OK.
- 26:34Speaker 1: I think we won the kayak challenge, but I, I
- 26:36Speaker 1: don't think I won the net. I can't remember the
- 26:38Speaker 1: netball one that you guys won. sorry, captain's ball. Of
- 26:42Speaker 1: course you all lose. I was the captain. I was
- 26:43Speaker 1: so tall. I was catching every single thing. Hey, you
- 26:46Speaker 1: don't underestimate small people, OK? And who do they assign
- 26:49Speaker 1: to block me, Sonia?
- 26:52Speaker 1: I'm like the, I'm like the chihuahua that's trying to
- 26:55Speaker 1: bite your ankles while he's just standing up there. Keep
- 26:58Speaker 1: the calls coming in at 669-11987 or you can WhatsApp
- 27:02Speaker 1: us at 90050987. Do you think we are competitive? Just
- 27:07Speaker 1: think about it, OK? You as a person, your family,
- 27:10Speaker 1: your friends, do you think
- 27:11Speaker 1: There's a higher percentage of competitive people here in Singapore.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Heading back to lots of messages coming through, so let's
- 27:17Speaker 1: read out some before heading to the phone lines. We
- 27:19Speaker 1: got one coming in from Darryl. Hello Darryl. Yes guys,
- 27:22Speaker 1: we are super competitive. In fact, I'm gyming now while
- 27:26Speaker 1: texting you so I don't lose out to my friends.
- 27:30Speaker 1: We are brought up in a culture where we can
- 27:32Speaker 1: only depend on ourselves for survival since our independence. Hence,
- 27:35Speaker 1: competitiveness is in our blood for survival's sake. I don't disagree.
- 27:40Speaker 1: I don't disagree. One coming in from anonymous texter. Hey,
- 27:44Speaker 1: good morning guys. I was tuning in today's show and
- 27:46Speaker 1: the question posed about competitiveness really resonated with me. I
- 27:51Speaker 1: can't speak for every student, but I'm definitely competitive by nature.
- 27:54Speaker 1: I'll give an example on the topic of university applications.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Whenever you see all your friends, all your pal, or
- 28:00Speaker 1: all your peers, rather, virtually everyone making it into the
- 28:04Speaker 1: top 3 unis in Singapore, NUS, NTUSMU, you feel happy
- 28:08Speaker 1: for them, but it can also feel marginalizing when you
- 28:11Speaker 1: don't meet with the same outcome. I think that's where
- 28:14Speaker 1: my competitive spirit stems from academics. Though in this case,
- 28:18Speaker 1: it's not healthy, and I have to remember that I can,
- 28:20Speaker 1: I can't compare my journey with someone else's because we
- 28:23Speaker 1: all walk different paths.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Prison is a thief of happiness, you know, you know
- 28:28Speaker 1: this phrase already. So, um, we, we like that. Thank
- 28:31Speaker 1: you so much for sharing that with us. I mean,
- 28:33Speaker 1: this got me thinking as well back then, back then
- 28:35Speaker 1: when I was in secondary school, right? I don't think
- 28:38Speaker 1: I was, my competitiveness didn't come out till like maybe
- 28:41Speaker 1: second half of secondary school, because I think when I
- 28:44Speaker 1: got filtered into a class where we're more like-minded, you know,
- 28:47Speaker 1: when they start to filter you into like, oh, like
- 28:49Speaker 1: pure humans, pure science, whatever classes, right? You start to
- 28:52Speaker 1: meet people that are quite similar to you and your.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Strengths. So that's when you start comparing to each other
- 28:58Speaker 1: and whenever results come out for exams and all that, um,
- 29:03Speaker 1: there are a couple of us who are usually score
- 29:05Speaker 1: quite well for certain subjects. Definitely that competitive spirit comes
- 29:10Speaker 1: out there, but I also want to thank them for
- 29:12Speaker 1: that because if not, I don't think I would have
- 29:14Speaker 1: done as well in O levels, for example. OK, I'm
- 29:17Speaker 1: gonna ask you a question. Not the poly. I mean,
- 29:20Speaker 1: every poly has its own set of competitiveness, right?
- 29:23Speaker 1: But given how you're in MP Masscom, super competitive to
- 29:26Speaker 1: get in, and it's even more to stay in there
- 29:30Speaker 1: and do well, did it also kind of shape you
- 29:32Speaker 1: to be very like must-win, must-win kind of person in
- 29:36Speaker 1: a way, OK, I would say, I would say yes
- 29:39Speaker 1: and no. Um, yes, because we already know when we
- 29:43Speaker 1: look at each other when we've entered the course, and
- 29:45Speaker 1: this is not to say NP Mascom is like the
- 29:48Speaker 1: only place that you should go to if you want
- 29:49Speaker 1: to pursue media like we always say, OK.
- 29:51Speaker 1: But we just know that it's a small cohort. That's,
- 29:53Speaker 1: that's the problem, right? And there's too many people that
- 29:55Speaker 1: want to go in. So when you look around at
- 29:57Speaker 1: the people who have made it into the course, you
- 29:59Speaker 1: already know that we are all cut from the same cloth,
- 30:01Speaker 1: you know, in a way that we have done our
- 30:04Speaker 1: best to try and get here. So we want to
- 30:06Speaker 1: fight for like better positions or score better grades or whatever.
- 30:14Speaker 1: It's it's not just us. I think many other universities,
- 30:17Speaker 1: parties and other courses may feel the same way. So yeah, but.
- 30:21Speaker 1: In a way, sometimes it's good. Yeah. We've got some
- 30:23Speaker 1: phone calls coming in from just a bit from Brian
- 30:25Speaker 1: and RE. Let's hear from them in a while. Talking
- 30:28Speaker 1: about whether or not we just have that competitive spirit
- 30:30Speaker 1: and blood in us here in Singapore. Yes, we do,
- 30:33Speaker 1: we do. We have that iron in us so far.
- 30:36Speaker 1: I think plenty of people have been saying, yes, we
- 30:38Speaker 1: are very competitive as people, so more messages coming through.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Wanna say hello to Mark. Hello Sojo, to Joakim. We
- 30:45Speaker 1: are the same, but I don't see that we are
- 30:47Speaker 1: being competitive to win, yet we want to do our
- 30:50Speaker 1: best and not regret.
- 30:51Speaker 1: I can allow myself to lose if I did my
- 30:53Speaker 1: best to have a good game where I gave my
- 30:55Speaker 1: competitor a good fight. If my partner is weak, I
- 30:59Speaker 1: will push myself more to cover them. That's why only
- 31:02Speaker 1: a handful of people can be my game or work partner.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Most of the time, I'm a one-man show. Mark, I
- 31:07Speaker 1: know exactly how you feel.
- 31:10Speaker 1: I feel like you guys can be besties right now.
- 31:13Speaker 1: It's like, you know, this might make me sound a
- 31:16Speaker 1: little bit one kind or arrogant or No, no. For example,
- 31:21Speaker 1: if I'm working with someone, I want that someone to
- 31:25Speaker 1: be of the same level and same standards. Yes, yes, yes, yes,
- 31:28Speaker 1: of course. If, if I'm working with someone who's who's
- 31:31Speaker 1: slightly below a bit.
- 31:32Speaker 1: Inexperienced, if that person is humble enough to to admit that,
- 31:36Speaker 1: I'll be more than willing to help. But if that
- 31:39Speaker 1: person who is inexperienced, but you still got some ego
- 31:42Speaker 1: on your shoulders, and I got to work with you
- 31:43Speaker 1: and you pull my standards down, I'll get very angry.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Of course, I completely get what you mean. And when
- 31:48Speaker 1: it comes to the court, I'm the one bringing Jeremy's game.
- 31:52Speaker 1: So I'm not used to this feeling because
- 31:55Speaker 1: Hear me out, hear me out, hear me out, OK?
- 31:57Speaker 1: I'm not used to this feeling, OK, because I also
- 32:00Speaker 1: like to win. I also like to do well. Let's
- 32:02Speaker 1: just not even talk about winning. I just like to
- 32:03Speaker 1: do well, OK, in whatever we're, we're we're setting out
- 32:06Speaker 1: to do, OK? Be it a project, work, something out there,
- 32:09Speaker 1: you know, whatever it is.
- 32:11Speaker 1: So at one point when I was really quite bad
- 32:13Speaker 1: as I was just starting out, right, and didn't have
- 32:15Speaker 1: much experience, I told Germs at one of the games,
- 32:18Speaker 1: I said, Germs, I think you should just look for
- 32:19Speaker 1: another partner because I can't deal with the feeling of
- 32:21Speaker 1: like dragging this whole game down. And we're like, we're
- 32:25Speaker 1: at rock bottom.
- 32:27Speaker 1: Because he also wants me to try and defend my
- 32:30Speaker 1: position just to learn, right? The only way to learn
- 32:34Speaker 1: is to play with people who are better than you,
- 32:37Speaker 1: or rather work with people who are better than you.
- 32:39Speaker 1: I think it applies to more than one thing here in.
- 32:42Speaker 1: In, uh, in this context, but at least he sees
- 32:45Speaker 1: you and putting in the effort. Correct? I'm trying and
- 32:48Speaker 1: putting in the effort, yes. Does he see it? He does.
- 32:51Speaker 1: He does, he does. He acknowledges it. He acknowledges it
- 32:54Speaker 1: now because we got into a fight about it previously.
- 32:58Speaker 1: And it's complicated and I tell you. You must be encouraging,
- 33:02Speaker 1: but you cannot compliment me too much, you know, and
- 33:05Speaker 1: you cannot lose your temper at me, so.
- 33:08Speaker 1: There's a lot of emotions you have to balance when
- 33:10Speaker 1: you're playing sports with your partner, like your real life partner.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Very much the occasional, well done, well done, well done. Hey,
- 33:15Speaker 1: come on faster, faster. Sometimes when he goes like, wow,
- 33:18Speaker 1: that was a good shot, then the next shot I bomb.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Singaporeans cannot praise, praise another topic for next week. OK, uh,
- 33:26Speaker 1: Ray is on the line right now. Please tell us, Ray,
- 33:28Speaker 1: you reckon we are very competitive.
- 33:30Speaker 2: I think
- 33:31Speaker 2: we are guilty as well. I think it's because I
- 33:37Speaker 2: guess I'm born in the year of 90s, so I'm
- 33:39Speaker 2: not sure if you guys experienced this top, top 10
- 33:41Speaker 2: in class and then you get
- 33:43Speaker 2: Uh, some, uh, bursary, etc. So, I think from primary school,
- 33:48Speaker 2: this kind of drive has been instilled in us until
- 33:51Speaker 2: the later part of the year, but
- 33:53Speaker 2: As I grow older, you know, I get to travel
- 33:55Speaker 2: around the world. I see that, you know, sometimes being
- 33:58Speaker 2: too competitive is also not good because I don't want
- 34:01Speaker 2: to lose out in Singapore.
- 34:07Speaker 1: Singapore. Can I ask, how do you keep yourself in
- 34:11Speaker 1: check in that level of being competitive?
- 34:13Speaker 2: I will always reflect back to those countries which are
- 34:17Speaker 2: not um as developed as Singapore and then I will
- 34:21Speaker 2: say that OK um if I am too competitive just
- 34:25Speaker 2: because I want to get my personal gain, then remember
- 34:28Speaker 2: about all the countries that I visited, you know, we
- 34:31Speaker 2: just live life as it is, so.
- 34:34Speaker 2: I should be more contented. That's why I will tone
- 34:36Speaker 2: myself
- 34:37Speaker 2: down.
- 34:38Speaker 1: You know, you brought up a very good point because
- 34:39Speaker 1: I think it all stems also from the question like
- 34:42Speaker 1: when will we ever be happy or content, right? You know,
- 34:46Speaker 1: and that that's another topic altogether. Yeah, but I think
- 34:49Speaker 1: it's related for next Monday. Yeah. Thank you so much, Ray,
- 34:53Speaker 1: for your call. You have a fantastic weekend. OK. Thank you.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Bye bye.
- 34:56Speaker 1: We're down to our last few messages and uh one
- 34:58Speaker 1: more caller, Brian, hanging on the line talking about whether
- 35:01Speaker 1: or not you think we are generally very competitive here
- 35:05Speaker 1: in Singapore. Wanna say hello to Karti on WhatsApp. Hey guys,
- 35:09Speaker 1: I think it is OK to be competitive within your ability,
- 35:12Speaker 1: but not entitled to win at all costs. I completely agree.
- 35:16Speaker 1: I mean, look, you have to know how to.
- 35:20Speaker 1: OK, maybe losing is not the right word for every context,
- 35:24Speaker 1: but for some contexts, you got to lose grace graciously,
- 35:27Speaker 1: you know. You have to learn to not win.
- 35:31Speaker 1: You have to learn that not winning is sometimes OK.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Why are we dishing out these one-liners? Like, are we
- 35:38Speaker 1: the ones that need therapy? Yeah, I cannot believe we
- 35:40Speaker 1: are being so polite about the word losing, losing, lose lah. Joe,
- 35:44Speaker 1: I think we need to make an appointment for a
- 35:45Speaker 1: therapist after this. I'm not your therapist, FYI, although he
- 35:49Speaker 1: treats me like one. Hello, it's equal, OK, OK. Some
- 35:54Speaker 1: of the things you share with me anyway, going to
- 35:56Speaker 1: WhatsApp and say hello, saying hello to Mini Qubale. That's
- 36:00Speaker 1: your name.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Morning sojo. I guess all millennials will know what I'm saying.
- 36:05Speaker 1: Our parents are super competitive. The way relatives and friends
- 36:08Speaker 1: will compete with each other by calling after the release
- 36:10Speaker 1: of exam results. Hello, how did your daughter do for
- 36:13Speaker 1: her exam? Are you like that. Ah, my son did
- 36:16Speaker 1: very well, you know, top 3 in his.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Level blah blah blah these kind of nonsense. Uh, me,
- 36:21Speaker 1: who I thought did pretty well, suddenly became feeling very crappy.
- 36:25Speaker 1: The next moment when they hang up the phone, my
- 36:27Speaker 1: mom will be like, wow, why do you do so badly?
- 36:29Speaker 1: You see auntie's son do so well, no TV for you,
- 36:32Speaker 1: go and study.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Projection is projection. Yeah, they're projecting on you. So whose
- 36:37Speaker 1: fault is this? You know, the funny thing is this
- 36:39Speaker 1: actually brought up some um conversations I had with my
- 36:43Speaker 1: folks over weddings, OK, because, um, seeing how, you know,
- 36:48Speaker 1: a wedding, your kid's wedding is also a time for
- 36:50Speaker 1: you to like invite your friends as a parent, right? So, obviously,
- 36:53Speaker 1: we had this conversation about whether, you know, who they
- 36:56Speaker 1: wanted to invite to my wedding from their side and
- 36:58Speaker 1: all that.
- 36:59Speaker 1: And I think they tried to reach out to some
- 37:00Speaker 1: old friends that maybe they haven't spoken to in some time,
- 37:04Speaker 1: but they had a long-standing friendship, and it's interesting the
- 37:08Speaker 1: kind of responses that you get from certain people that
- 37:11Speaker 1: you thought were friends. Yeah, I think even as late
- 37:15Speaker 1: in life as, you know, your kid's wedding, they still
- 37:18Speaker 1: compare their kid's wedding to your other friend's kid's wedding.
- 37:22Speaker 1: This is the unfortunate thing and this is the competitiveness
- 37:24Speaker 1: that comes out as well, you know. To all those
- 37:27Speaker 1: who want to compare.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Sonia's wedding, no, no, it's not related to just me.
- 37:31Speaker 1: I think in general, like across the board. I mean
- 37:34Speaker 1: your relatives and whoever. No, my relatives are great. They
- 37:37Speaker 1: were all there. Relatives, no problem. Yeah, I think it's
- 37:40Speaker 1: some friends of, yeah, of my parents from the past. So. OK, OK,
- 37:45Speaker 1: stop it, stop it. I can get a glimpse of
- 37:47Speaker 1: you as a dad already and I'm scared.
- 37:51Speaker 1: We got Brian on the line right now. OK, Brian,
- 37:53Speaker 1: tell us, you reckon we're competitive. We are all very competitive,
- 37:57Speaker 1: which parent compare you with someone else. I know how
- 38:02Speaker 1: you feel. Blame, blame our parents. Do you remember any
- 38:06Speaker 1: particular incident that you could tell us about right now?
- 38:09Speaker 1: Primary school, secondary school exam. Hey, your cousin did better.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Do you find yourself being competitive as well? Particularly when
- 38:16Speaker 1: I play sports other than that, not really. OK, but
- 38:19Speaker 1: you know, I feel like ever since picking up paddle,
- 38:22Speaker 1: although I'm not like fantastic at it, just put it
- 38:24Speaker 1: out there because I was never a sporty person ever.
- 38:27Speaker 1: I feel like I now understand why sports at a
- 38:29Speaker 1: young age is important to teach you how to win
- 38:32Speaker 1: and how to lose as well, you know, so I
- 38:34Speaker 1: think in that sense, it's great. Thank you so much, Brian,
- 38:37Speaker 1: for your call. Thank you. Have a nice day. Bye. Wow,
- 38:40Speaker 1: what a great bunch of messages, calls, stories that we've
- 38:43Speaker 1: had and opinions as well. We really appreciate you. Our
- 38:46Speaker 1: show will not be the same without you, as we
- 38:48Speaker 1: always say, and we really mean it. In exchange, you
- 38:50Speaker 1: might walk away with a $100 dining experience. Let's give
- 38:53Speaker 1: it to Ray.
- 38:56Speaker 1: Congratulations. Here's what's in store for you. We've been giving
- 39:00Speaker 1: this away all this week thanks to our friends over
- 39:02Speaker 1: at Courtyard by Marriott. Mhm. All thanks to Las Palmas.
- 39:06Speaker 1: A $100 dining experience is coming your way, Ray. Enjoy
- 39:10Speaker 1: great drink deals at Las Palmas with Sundowner Happy Hour
- 39:13Speaker 1: from $9 or go on down from Tuesdays to Thursdays,
- 39:17Speaker 1: 8:00 p.m. to midnight.
- 39:18Speaker 1: For what they call a weeknight twilight. Oh, love it.
- 39:21Speaker 1: You know what, I also think that they've got quite
- 39:23Speaker 1: a good view from up there. So it's a date
- 39:26Speaker 1: night worthy or maybe if you want to spend it
- 39:28Speaker 1: with your girlfriends or your loved ones. You can even
- 39:29Speaker 1: do your solemnization over there as well. Oh, like a
- 39:32Speaker 1: wedding destination. Oh.
- 39:33Speaker 1: It's nice. OK, just have to pray for good weather.
- 39:35Speaker 1: It's rooftop, right? Do they have a sheltered zone? I'm
- 39:38Speaker 1: not sure. I've not been there. Just plant the chili
- 39:40Speaker 1: and the onion. Hopefully it works. It poured during my wedding, la,
- 39:44Speaker 1: but nothing outdoors, right? Oh, no, yeah, but I guess
- 39:46Speaker 1: it was troublesome for people to like walk.
- 39:49Speaker 1: From the car park. That's true. But we had umbrellas,
- 39:52Speaker 1: so that was fine. It's just that it didn't work.
- 39:54Speaker 1: At least I was not perspiring. Yeah, yeah, that's the
- 39:57Speaker 1: only bright side. Actually, actually, yeah, we were quite relieved.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Everyone was not sweaty. Anyway, congratulations, Ray. Hope you enjoy
- 40:04Speaker 1: yourself there. As it stands, 10 minutes in, tequila nail
- 40:08Speaker 1: soju nail.
- 40:10Speaker 1: OK lah, so still OK. Mexico and, by the way. Yeah, that's, that's,
- 40:13Speaker 1: that's a word. So he asked me that question. You
- 40:16Speaker 1: think tequila or soju will win with no context, given
- 40:19Speaker 1: what you drink and what you enjoy I drink water.
- 40:22Speaker 1: I love drinking water and coffee. Actually, I realized what
- 40:25Speaker 1: other beverage are you talking about? Soju, tequila, and water,
- 40:28Speaker 1: same color. Can you transparent.
- 40:31Speaker 1: Sometimes I get confused lah, that's why I mix them up,
- 40:34Speaker 1: drink the wrong one, you know.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Coming up in a few minutes. Speaking of drinks, this
- 40:40Speaker 1: is actually, I would call them primarily a bar, I
- 40:44Speaker 1: would say primarily a bar, um, that we've been to before, Joakim,
- 40:47Speaker 1: you and I. Just last year, that was the last
- 40:50Speaker 1: time we went in 2025. In fact, I think it
- 40:52Speaker 1: was the second half of last year that we went
- 40:54Speaker 1: and it was a very memorable place. Um, we, although
- 40:57Speaker 1: I will say that we've been to quite a number
- 40:59Speaker 1: of places and experienced places together.
- 41:01Speaker 1: Um, this was actually HTB themed. Do you remember? The
- 41:06Speaker 1: one over at Prince? Yes, it's called Long. Yes. Time
- 41:11Speaker 1: for some, well, unfortunate food news. It's a Friday. I know,
- 41:15Speaker 1: I know, but take it, take it as, um, as
- 41:19Speaker 1: a good thing that you, you know, thank them for
- 41:21Speaker 1: the memories. I guess that's, that's what I'm going for. 123, news, news, Sonia.
- 41:31Speaker 1: Bittersweet news. Yeah, go for it. OK, so we've been
- 41:35Speaker 1: to this place before. I recall it was because we
- 41:38Speaker 1: were with a lot of um creators from the region.
- 41:42Speaker 1: That came to Singapore for uh Lady Gaga's concert. Do
- 41:45Speaker 1: you remember this? Yeah. So one of the places that
- 41:48Speaker 1: we made a pit stop at was actually Loh Shang,
- 41:49Speaker 1: like you mentioned, over at Prince Street, and it was
- 41:52Speaker 1: really quite an experience for them because you wouldn't expect
- 41:55Speaker 1: a bar to look like that. The very nice HDB
- 41:57Speaker 1: inspired them, yeah, and the experience starts from outside, right?
- 42:01Speaker 1: Like when you walk through, um, the corridor on the
- 42:04Speaker 1: way to the bar, they recreated it to look like
- 42:06Speaker 1: an HDB corridor, which I would say a lot of
- 42:09Speaker 1: people who visit.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Singapore, while they see our HDBs from outside looking in,
- 42:13Speaker 1: they may not actually walk inside and experience like how
- 42:15Speaker 1: it's like walking through the corridors or take a peek
- 42:18Speaker 1: inside people's, you know, visit someone's house if you have
- 42:20Speaker 1: a friend. It's on top of Mama Tian. Yes, Mama
- 42:23Speaker 1: Mama Diam, yeah. Is it Tian or Tia? I mean,
- 42:27Speaker 1: I think Mama Tian in Mandarin. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 42:30Speaker 1: but I guess, yeah, translate it. So anyway, um, for
- 42:34Speaker 1: several months, I think they faced quite a bit of challenges.
- 42:36Speaker 1: I mean, they found it increasingly hard to maintain.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Um, culminated in quite a lot of losses actually into
- 42:41Speaker 1: the few 100,000 range, and it's, it's tough being an
- 42:46Speaker 1: F&B business owner. It really is tough. One interesting thing
- 42:49Speaker 1: to note is that the owner said yes, while a
- 42:53Speaker 1: lot of newcomers, if it's their first time visiting the
- 42:56Speaker 1: Badeck are always in
- 42:58Speaker 1: In a mode of surprise. They're like, oh, this is
- 43:00Speaker 1: so cool, this is so nice. But the question is
- 43:03Speaker 1: how to maintain a steady flow of customers constantly, right?
- 43:06Speaker 1: I think this is a question a lot of F&B
- 43:08Speaker 1: owners are trying to answer right now as well.
- 43:12Speaker 1: Could it, could it also be because maybe Mama Tam
- 43:16Speaker 1: gives them a bit of competition?
- 43:18Speaker 1: But it belongs to them. It belongs to them. The
- 43:21Speaker 1: whole thing belongs to them. It's, yeah, that's the thing.
- 43:26Speaker 1: So it's related to each other, right? Um, I think
- 43:29Speaker 1: hopefully Mama Jam continues. Maybe they can still because they
- 43:32Speaker 1: still run as like a, I think, a cafe or something,
- 43:35Speaker 1: or do they also serve cocktails? I'm not sure because
- 43:37Speaker 1: we only drank upstairs. Um, but yeah, they were just
- 43:40Speaker 1: trying to build this perfect nostalgia moment for people, which
- 43:44Speaker 1: I think they had a lot of attention at the start, right?
- 43:48Speaker 1: Um, just here hoping that there'll be one last hurrah
- 43:50Speaker 1: and they can reinvent themselves next year. I was studio,
- 43:57Speaker 1: but I realized how long can it last in the novelty, right? Yeah,
- 44:01Speaker 1: so they have to keep changing the background. I know
- 44:02Speaker 1: that also incurs a lot of costs, so.
- 44:04Speaker 1: It's OK. I mean, I think they run a bunch
- 44:06Speaker 1: of other businesses, so see what they can do and
- 44:09Speaker 1: hopefully they reappear again in the future. Hey, but Long,
- 44:13Speaker 1: thank you for the memories and giving us something to
- 44:16Speaker 1: look forward to here in Singapore, very uniquely Singaporean, as
- 44:19Speaker 1: if I wasn't one already, gonna be a big kid
- 44:22Speaker 1: this weekend.
- 44:23Speaker 1: Why are you laughing? Huh? Why are you laughing? Nothing, nothing, nothing.
- 44:27Speaker 1: I'm gonna watch Toy Story 5. I really wanna watch it,
- 44:30Speaker 1: but you know what I need to do first? I
- 44:32Speaker 1: want to rewatch everything before that. Well, it's available for
- 44:35Speaker 1: you on Disney Plus. Exactly, yeah. I think Toy Story
- 44:37Speaker 1: 4 you can skip. It wasn't your favorite Toy Story
- 44:41Speaker 1: 4 was a bit.
- 44:42Speaker 1: Bit of a cash grab if you ask me. Yeah, we,
- 44:45Speaker 1: we definitely have more emotional attachment to the previous 12,
- 44:48Speaker 1: and 3 to Andy. Andy, yes. So let's see where
- 44:52Speaker 1: Toy Story 5 takes us. Apparently, according to all the
- 44:56Speaker 1: critics and the reviews, it's a very well done story. Really?
- 45:01Speaker 1: And the soundtrack as well, you reckon? I mean, there's
- 45:03Speaker 1: Taylor Swift. I knew it. I knew you.
- 45:07Speaker 1: Now we need to know the context of that song.
- 45:09Speaker 1: You know how sometimes when a song releases as a single,
- 45:12Speaker 1: but it's also from the soundtrack of a movie, it
- 45:14Speaker 1: makes a difference when you actually watch the movie with
- 45:17Speaker 1: that soundtrack playing. Like then maybe there's some context. I
- 45:21Speaker 1: don't know. 50 Shades of Grey. Love you.
- 45:26Speaker 1: Like to be fair, I really like the Weekend songs. Again,
- 45:30Speaker 1: just maybe like when you watch it with the soundtrack,
- 45:33Speaker 1: I can't listen to the song the same way anymore.
- 45:35Speaker 1: So I've been saying this for 11 years. 50 Shades
- 45:37Speaker 1: is an example of how the soundtrack is so much
- 45:39Speaker 1: better than the movie. Oh no, OK. It's a lot
- 45:43Speaker 1: of people will disagree with you because they love it.
- 45:45Speaker 1: I mean, it's not me. No, they will love the
- 45:48Speaker 1: book better. True, true, true. OK. Speaking of soundtracks that
- 45:51Speaker 1: are different, remember this.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Whoa, this scene in the movie. You can't listen to
- 46:00Speaker 1: this song anymore, the same way.
- 46:04Speaker 1: OK, so after 13 years, and given how this outlet
- 46:09Speaker 1: was the first one in Singapore, and upon further reading,
- 46:14Speaker 1: We spoke about this mall a few months ago when
- 46:18Speaker 1: they announced redevelopment plans. Plaza Singapura. Oh yes. Well, Plaza
- 46:24Speaker 1: Sing I always identified as there's the new site and
- 46:27Speaker 1: there's the older site, right? So they did revamp or
- 46:30Speaker 1: extend one site. So now they're revamping the older site,
- 46:32Speaker 1: I'm assuming. Hopefully, with the cinema, right? This particular restaurant
- 46:37Speaker 1: sits in the middle.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Tim. 00, in the middle of both sides, OK, because
- 46:43Speaker 1: there are other.
- 46:44Speaker 1: There are other like cafes and restaurants that have also
- 46:47Speaker 1: been in Plaza Sing for a long time. OK, what's
- 46:49Speaker 1: happening with Timpow? So after 13 years, they announced it's
- 46:52Speaker 1: closing its doors for a while due to the mall redevelopments.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Whether it will go back there once everything is done,
- 46:59Speaker 1: hopefully it will. If not, there are 8 other outlets
- 47:02Speaker 1: to enjoy here in Singapore first. I was gonna say
- 47:05Speaker 1: when it comes to a chain like Tim, I don't
- 47:07Speaker 1: think it's got to do with like bad sales or whatever.
- 47:10Speaker 1: I mean, I'm sure people are always.
- 47:12Speaker 1: Going in and out and you can go there for
- 47:13Speaker 1: a snack or full meal, so it works the whole day.
- 47:16Speaker 1: If for no reason something like Tim Ho or Tini
- 47:20Speaker 1: closes down, you know something is wrong. Yeah, yeah. That's
- 47:23Speaker 1: why sometimes when I see like Starbucks removing themselves from
- 47:27Speaker 1: like a mall, I'm like, hm, lah, but for Starbucks,
- 47:30Speaker 1: it's kind of overdone, right, overexpanded here in Singapore. There's
- 47:34Speaker 1: there's a Starbucks everywhere you turn. You think so? OK,
- 47:37Speaker 1: it's too much. I mean, we need coffee every day, so.
- 47:39Speaker 1: I never thought of it as like, oh, there's too
- 47:41Speaker 1: many outlets. Then in the CBD you turn left is Starbucks.
- 47:44Speaker 1: You turn right is Luckin Coffee. You go straight to
- 47:46Speaker 1: some matcha outlet. That being said, I think perhaps, um,
- 47:49Speaker 1: quite a number of Singaporeans might be becoming more discerning
- 47:53Speaker 1: about what they consume. Like maybe they want to try
- 47:56Speaker 1: like a, a specialty espresso joint or like a specialty
- 47:59Speaker 1: matcha shop, you know, so it depends. The matcha shop
- 48:02Speaker 1: being what Havala is it? Oh, they're very good. OK,
- 48:05Speaker 1: I like them. I like them.
