- 0:02You're listening to the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast
- 0:06with Dr. Brenna Hicks.
- 0:09Hi,
- 0:09I'm Dr. Brenna Hicks,
- 0:11The Kid Counselor.
- 0:11This is the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast where I give you insight,
- 0:14awareness,
- 0:15and enlightenment about your parenting
- 0:17and your relationship with your kids.
- 0:19In today's episode,
- 0:20we are
- 0:22almost to the end,
- 0:232nd to last Parent Companion series episode.
- 0:26And today,
- 0:27we are talking about
- 0:29how children
- 0:31work through things and develop coping and resilience
- 0:35independent of the environment and the circumstance.
- 0:39So let me
- 0:40dive in a little bit so you understand what I mean.
- 0:42Often one of the questions that we get asked
- 0:44about a child beginning the therapeutic process
- 0:47is,
- 0:48how is this going to help if nothing changes,
- 0:52Fill in the blank.
- 0:53So,
- 0:53nothing's going to change at mom's house,
- 0:56or
- 0:57they're still going to have a very contentious relationship with dad,
- 1:00or
- 1:01School is still not going to have any tolerance or any unconditional acceptance,
- 1:07or
- 1:08things are still going to be hectic and chaotic at home because of X,
- 1:11Y,
- 1:11Z.
- 1:12So,
- 1:12how is CCPT actually going to help if we can't
- 1:16get that environment or that situation to improve?
- 1:20Very
- 1:21reasonable question.
- 1:22But this is one of the things that is so special about child-centered play therapy.
- 1:28CCPT works
- 1:30because it's not about the environment,
- 1:31it's not about the circumstance,
- 1:33it's about the child.
- 1:35So,
- 1:35what does that mean practically?
- 1:37Well,
- 1:37they're going to develop coping skills.
- 1:40They're going to develop resilience,
- 1:43problem solving.
- 1:45They're going to accept themselves more,
- 1:48like themselves,
- 1:48trust themselves.
- 1:50Have an emotional vocabulary.
- 1:52They're,
- 1:52they're gaining all of these things.
- 1:54And so what does that do?
- 1:55Well,
- 1:56when you don't possess any of those things.
- 1:59You feel that you're at the mercy of your circumstance.
- 2:02And you feel like you're the victim
- 2:04of whatever's going on.
- 2:06So,
- 2:07dad is so mean
- 2:09and
- 2:09I'm the victim in this,
- 2:11or
- 2:12mom is so overbearing,
- 2:14I'm the victim.
- 2:15I'm at the mercy of that.
- 2:16I have no control over that.
- 2:18While that remains true.
- 2:21What happens through the child-centered play therapy process
- 2:24is the child actually starts to respond
- 2:27totally differently
- 2:28to those circumstances and environments.
- 2:31They're no longer as negatively impacted.
- 2:34It's no longer as overwhelming.
- 2:36They no longer feel that they can't cope,
- 2:39that they have no strategies to handle it.
- 2:41So everything that was negative about the circumstance
- 2:45or the relationship or the environment or whatever,
- 2:48all of the negativity surrounding that.
- 2:51It
- 2:52is still exactly the same,
- 2:54but the child has a totally different perspective
- 2:57on that scenario.
- 3:00So basically what happens is over time,
- 3:03the child is acquiring all these skills.
- 3:06Developing more self-esteem,
- 3:07developing more worldview,
- 3:09developing more regulation,
- 3:11all the other things that I've already mentioned.
- 3:12And so,
- 3:13they go back to,
- 3:15you know,
- 3:15mom's house,
- 3:16for example.
- 3:17And it's still
- 3:19angry or aggressive or,
- 3:22you know,
- 3:22alcohol's involved or whatever,
- 3:24whatever the scenario is.
- 3:25And,
- 3:26you know,
- 3:26usually we think,
- 3:28gosh,
- 3:28I wish that the child didn't have to.
- 3:31To go and deal with that.
- 3:32And that remains true.
- 3:33I mean,
- 3:34even for us,
- 3:34when we're working with,
- 3:35with children,
- 3:37we often as therapists think,
- 3:38gosh,
- 3:38I wish that I could spare that child from whatever that scenario is.
- 3:43But the beauty of CCPT
- 3:45is that the child changes in the midst
- 3:48of that circumstance.
- 3:50And what used to be too much for them to handle,
- 3:53what used to be overwhelming,
- 3:55what used to take a toll on them emotionally,
- 3:59what they used to feel victimized by.
- 4:02They all of a sudden can advocate for themselves.
- 4:05They understand their feelings and communicate them.
- 4:08They
- 4:09know how to regulate.
- 4:11They believe in themselves to handle it.
- 4:14They have problem solving
- 4:15capabilities.
- 4:17And so on and so forth.
- 4:18So,
- 4:19the environment is exactly the same,
- 4:21but it no longer has the influence
- 4:24that it once did.
- 4:26And so over time,
- 4:27instead of saying,
- 4:29Gosh,
- 4:29I can't do this.
- 4:31I don't want to do this.
- 4:32This is too much.
- 4:33This is too hard.
- 4:34I hate this.
- 4:36So on and so forth.
- 4:37The internal dialogue shifts to.
- 4:41Yeah,
- 4:41I still don't like it,
- 4:42but.
- 4:43And then there's a whole different dialogue.
- 4:46So,
- 4:46I still don't like it,
- 4:48but
- 4:49I can just tell him that I'm not gonna do that.
- 4:52I still wish it was different,
- 4:54but
- 4:55I'll just figure out a way to solve the problem.
- 4:57I'll handle it.
- 4:59I hope that that doesn't keep happening,
- 5:01but if it does,
- 5:02I'll be OK.
- 5:04And now all of a sudden we've pivoted
- 5:06to
- 5:07confidence
- 5:08and competence.
- 5:11And ability to trust yourself
- 5:14and ownership over the future.
- 5:18Because
- 5:18now all of a sudden,
- 5:20you're not saying,
- 5:21oh no,
- 5:22fear-based avoidance-based.
- 5:25I can't do that.
- 5:26I won't do that.
- 5:27I can't handle that.
- 5:28That's gonna be too much.
- 5:29That's awful.
- 5:31That's,
- 5:31I'll do anything in my power to not have to deal with that.
- 5:35Which causes maladaptive coping.
- 5:37Then you get anxiety,
- 5:38then you get withdrawal,
- 5:39then you get aggression,
- 5:40then you get power and control.
- 5:42So,
- 5:42if you have fear and avoidance-based
- 5:45thinking,
- 5:47You operate in a certain way.
- 5:49If you have confident,
- 5:52competent
- 5:53base thinking,
- 5:55You say,
- 5:56well,
- 5:56I'm going to be all right no matter what.
- 5:57I mean,
- 5:58look,
- 5:58I wouldn't choose that.
- 5:59I don't like it.
- 6:00I wish it was different.
- 6:02But in the end,
- 6:03everything's going to work out because I'm going to be OK.
- 6:08And that is the huge shift.
- 6:10So the coping skills
- 6:12are what equip the child to manage and handle.
- 6:17So that they're not negatively impacted by the environment
- 6:20and the circumstance and the relationship or whatever.
- 6:22We can never control other people
- 6:25as much as we would love to.
- 6:27You only have control over yourself.
- 6:29That's your PSA for the week.
- 6:31You only have control over yourself.
- 6:34So,
- 6:34as much as we would love to say,
- 6:36I'm going to tell them,
- 6:37I'm going to make them,
- 6:38I'm going to force them,
- 6:39I'm going to refuse,
- 6:40I'm going to,
- 6:41that's trying to control other people's behaviors and that's futile.
- 6:46So children are able to
- 6:49do the work,
- 6:51gain what they need.
- 6:53Build up tolerance and
- 6:56regulation and awareness and all of these things,
- 6:59and then they go into an environment
- 7:02and
- 7:03they control themselves because that's the only person over who they have control.
- 7:07So they're going to control themselves,
- 7:09and they know that they're going to be OK.
- 7:12So that is one of the greatest gains,
- 7:15I think,
- 7:15of the child-centered play therapy process.
- 7:18You really equip your children
- 7:20to handle anything
- 7:22moving forward.
- 7:23And they believe that they can handle anything moving forward.
- 7:27That's exactly what we want
- 7:28because that kind of confidence
- 7:30allows you to
- 7:32achieve anything
- 7:33long term,
- 7:33you know,
- 7:34even as a 40,
- 7:3550,
- 7:3560 year old,
- 7:36if you learn in childhood,
- 7:39I'll be all right.
- 7:39I'll figure it out.
- 7:40I can handle anything.
- 7:42You speak that to yourself and it becomes true.
- 7:44Self-fulfilling prophecy.
- 7:46We've talked about that before.
- 7:47So,
- 7:47I hope that that encourages you.
- 7:49We have one more.
- 7:51Parent Companion

- 7:54coming next time.
