- 0:24One O 2 five and one O 6 three. The game at
- 0:27nashvillepredators.com. This is the Predators official
- 0:31podcast here on your radio home for Preds hockey ESPN.
- 0:36One O 2 five and one O 6 three. The game today is Monday October
- 0:4021st. Preds are still looking for
- 0:41their first win of the season heading into the final game of a
- 0:45four-game home stand on Tuesday night at 7:45, part of ESP NS
- 0:50Frozen frenzy against the Boston Bruins.
- 0:53My name is Max Hers from Preds radio along with Kara Hammer
- 0:56from Preds TV. Hello, Hammer Time.
- 0:59What's up Max? Searching for the first one but
- 1:03I feel like it's coming. It's coming.
- 1:07I'm not panicked yet. I'm not panicked either, but
- 1:10unfortunately the Preds are off to the worst start in franchise
- 1:13history. They are O, 5 and O to start the
- 1:16season. They are the only NHL team
- 1:18without a standings point and it has been sad to watch these last
- 1:23few games as the Preds have really done a ton of things
- 1:25right. They've had an unbelievable
- 1:26amount of chances. I think the one consistent story
- 1:30Kara across every game and and all the shortcomings the big
- 1:35guns have had their chances. And it's like, Oh my God, how
- 1:38are these shots not going in? How are those pucks getting
- 1:41saved? And they're doing everything
- 1:43right. And finally, since we last
- 1:46podcasted, both Jonathan Marshiso and Stephen Stamkos
- 1:49have gotten rewarded with their long-awaited first goals in
- 1:52gold. It it almost feels like they're
- 1:56a little bit snake bit. I think the last time we had
- 1:58this podcast we talked about how many chances they had that hit
- 2:01off the post. But I mean, you look at Stephen
- 2:04Stamkos chances on the power play on Saturday, Max.
- 2:08I mean, what is save on his first power play shot?
- 2:12It hit off the stick, bounced out.
- 2:15I think even Stammer was shocked how that puck did not go in the
- 2:19net. Yeah, and I actually got a
- 2:21chance to check in with Stephen Stamkos after practice here on
- 2:24Monday about that, just kind of asking him like I, we will
- 2:28interview Stephen Stamkos on the podcast at some point in the
- 2:31next month. I, I have a million questions I
- 2:34could ask him about the dynamics of his shooting process and shot
- 2:38location and aim and release and every single part of it.
- 2:42I could ask him questions until he literally would walk away
- 2:44from me, which probably at some point will happen to me in an
- 2:47interview and maybe it'll happen in this one.
- 2:48But I asked him today, like, we'll save the rest for later.
- 2:51But is that something that happens to you a lot?
- 2:53Like 'cause you take so many shots from the same spot?
- 2:56Like our goalies gonna do crazy things like that against you,
- 2:59Use the knob of their stick to make really loud paddle saves.
- 3:03And his answer was not really, basically that was a lucky save.
- 3:07So you're spot on. Yeah, it felt like I, I think
- 3:11everybody was shocked. We definitely were on the
- 3:15broadcast team. But then Max they came out to
- 3:17start the the period, they still were on the man advantage and he
- 3:21picked up his first goal in gold.
- 3:23Yeah, and it was a beautiful goal.
- 3:24Philip Forsberg with amazing movement to set it up five on
- 3:27three. The goal was technically scored
- 3:29five on 4, but #4 was not back into the penalty kill at all.
- 3:34That was quite a moment for the Preds.
- 3:35A5 on three split by the period break, trailing by a goal
- 3:40against the Red Wings. Still looking for their first
- 3:42win of the season in game #5 Five of the best players in
- 3:46Preds history had an entire intermission to think about it
- 3:49after coming oh so close at the end of the second twice.
- 3:54And they got it to go. So that deserves a lot of
- 3:56credit. I think Kara, that is a pressure
- 3:59packed moment for a group that is squeezing their sticks and it
- 4:02led to the breakthrough. They didn't crumble under the
- 4:04pressure. Yeah, that was an amazing
- 4:07moment. And for me, Max, that wasn't
- 4:09even the highlight of that game. That had to come when Luke Shen
- 4:13scored a goal after receiving the Silver stick for playing in
- 4:17his one thousandth game on Thursday night.
- 4:20Unreal, Unreal Second goal as a Predator for Luke Shen.
- 4:25He had one last season. He's now got 44 goals in 1001
- 4:32NHL regular season games. And this was a beautiful goal.
- 4:36Working with the Preds top line. Philip Forsberg, Ryan O'Reilly
- 4:39and Gus Nyquist had an incredible shift.
- 4:42O'Reilly passed it back up the wall to Shen, who took a little
- 4:45tiny half clap load for the one timer and buried it through
- 4:50Philip Forsberg's tip attempt. And my favorite part about the
- 4:53goal? Kara, as soon as it went in,
- 4:56Philip Forsberg turned around with a big smile under that
- 4:58stash and pointed to make sure everyone in the arena knew that
- 5:03he did not tip that puck. And that was Mr. 1000's goal,
- 5:06Luke Shen, and everybody was laughing the whole time.
- 5:10I feel like you couldn't write a better script.
- 5:13I mean, you come out on the ice, you receive your silver stick.
- 5:16He has his family out. Penalty box radio showed a shot
- 5:22of him and he was tearing up on the bench when they were
- 5:25playing. The video of the guys talking
- 5:27about him, what it's been like for a lot of these NHL players
- 5:31and his family members, you know what it's like playing with him
- 5:34on the ice. And obviously we heard from his
- 5:36kids too, about what a great dad he is.
- 5:39The video before the game, which aired on the scoreboard and on
- 5:42Preds TV, was so cute. He has such a beautiful family,
- 5:46his wife Jess, his kids Kingston Weston and Romy.
- 5:51His parents Jeff and Rita were also on the ice with him.
- 5:54We got to go to the Shen boys here.
- 5:56Kara. I know a lot of people saw this
- 5:58on the scoreboard or on TV already, but there are no cuter
- 6:02shout outs than this. We're going to start with his
- 6:04oldest son who really should be named Luke Shen Junior because
- 6:07he looks and demotes and moves exactly like his dad.
- 6:11This is 7 year old Kingston Shen congratulating his Pennsylvania.
- 6:15Dad, congratulations on 1000 game.
- 6:18And the thing I really love about you is that you block
- 6:22thoughts and you're a really good body checker and I love you
- 6:27and go prank. That's 7 year old Kingston Shen.
- 6:32And then here's the middle child, little bro, 4 year old
- 6:36Weston Shen. Hi Dad, congratulations on your
- 6:41fasting game. And.
- 6:45I love the body checking people. And.
- 6:49I love you my your team scores some goals let's.
- 6:53Go cats. Was that a little snarky?
- 6:57Why don't you score some goals from 4 year old Weston Shen and
- 7:03then Luke scored him. It worked, it worked, Weston.
- 7:08Incredible. Maybe we need Weston to come and
- 7:11read the lineup. Yeah, for Tuesday night.
- 7:14I think we actually played this clip back in the spring on the
- 7:17podcast, Luke Shen said on Smashville Live last year.
- 7:21His kids chirp him and we'll say, why does Jameson's dad
- 7:26score more than you? And that's Ryan O'reilly's son's
- 7:29name. Why do the other kids dads score
- 7:31more than you? Can you imagine these players
- 7:36out on the ice? And, and I don't know if you
- 7:37know this Max, but Luke Shen's oldest, Jonathan Marshiso's
- 7:42oldest and Ryan O'reilly's oldest all play on the same
- 7:46junior hockey team. That's a loaded group right
- 7:49there. And also Kara, how about Luke
- 7:53Shen, who's an amazing father, His kids being asked, what's
- 7:57your favorite thing about your dad?
- 7:59I don't think they asked them what's your favorite thing about
- 8:02your dad playing hockey, Just what's your favorite thing about
- 8:05your dad in general? Body checking.
- 8:10Body checking, I mean, Can you imagine what these kids are
- 8:12learning though, Max on their junior team?
- 8:14I mean, are the Shank kids out there body checking Marceau's
- 8:18kids? I think they're out there trying
- 8:19to outscore their dad based on what Westman said.
- 8:24And then we we don't have the audio of it, but baby girl Romy,
- 8:27who is a year and a half was very cute in the video.
- 8:31I don't think they could get her to sit still long enough to give
- 8:34a cameo. Kara you can relate as a parent
- 8:36of a soon to be 2 1/2 year old, but she made an appearance.
- 8:41It was very cute. I thought the I thought the
- 8:43video was was great. I mean, obviously we just talked
- 8:46about the emotion from him, but what a special guy.
- 8:49I mean, Luke Shen, Max, everybody in the league knows
- 8:51him. You know, if you miss a
- 8:53broadcast on Thursday night during that one thousandth game
- 8:57taking on the Oilers, nearly every single player from
- 8:59Edmonton came up and told Luke, Congrats, Congrats on your
- 9:04thousandth game. It was coming all through the
- 9:05game. He was wearing a mic, so we were
- 9:07picking up all the audio and it just kind of shows what type of
- 9:11player he is. That's awesome.
- 9:13Yeah, one of the many veteran players on this Preds group
- 9:16currently who is beloved around the league and one of the
- 9:19reasons why people are so befuddled by the Fred starting O
- 9:22and five. I know you want to give a shout
- 9:24out to another couple of former Preds who popped into that
- 9:27video, Scott Hartnell, who you got to see and a real OG Pred,
- 9:32even more of an OG than Scotty Hartnell, a year 1 Pred chemo
- 9:35team. And in crashing the video,
- 9:37Hartnell and team and in in a golf cart together,
- 9:40congratulating their former Flyer teammate Luke Shen.
- 9:43Hey Luki, Congrats on 1000 games my man.
- 9:46Well deserved. You earned a heck of a career.
- 9:49It was a pleasure playing with you and you'd be one of my best
- 9:52buddies. Oh, just wait.
- 9:53Oh oh hey, you were the best deep partner I ever had.
- 9:57Congrats. Welcome to the club, buddy.
- 10:00The camera fan to chemo got me so good sitting in the golf cart
- 10:03together. Scott Hartnell was at the game
- 10:09on Saturday Max. I was in the room with him up
- 10:12and happen Harry's. Scott was telling me that he
- 10:15read the line up so he was already amped getting the boys
- 10:19fired up going into this outing and I was right there when Luke
- 10:24Shin scored his first goal. You would have thought that
- 10:27Scott, that Scott scored the goal by his reaction.
- 10:31He was jumping up and down, drinks were flying, he was
- 10:36hugging every single one of Lucian's family members.
- 10:39It was total chaos and it was so neat.
- 10:42I mean, it was just like pure elation from every single family
- 10:46member in the room and just so much excitement in that moment.
- 10:50Oh, I love that so much. Yeah, Scott Hart and all.
- 10:53I mean, we don't have to tell the Pred fans how infectious his
- 10:56joy and personality are. That's so cool to see the past
- 10:59Preds reuniting with the current Preds in such a unique way.
- 11:03And also one big thank you from the soon to be Hockey Hall of
- 11:07Famer Shay Weber. Hey, Shaner.
- 11:10Just want to congratulate you on 1000 games buddy.
- 11:14Just a Prairie boy 15 year old coming to live with Barry and
- 11:18Inge and now you're hitting 1000 games.
- 11:20Pretty amazing buddy. Proud of you.
- 11:22Congratulations. Enjoy the night pal and.
- 11:24What Shay is talking about is the Billet family handoff in
- 11:29Kelowna. Shay Weber was moving out.
- 11:32Luke Shen and Tyson Berry moved in.
- 11:39He said that there's a whole group of them that they still
- 11:42vacation together or spend some time together in Kelowna.
- 11:45I think Blake Como was part of that group.
- 11:48He was at the game on Saturday. What a small hockey world it
- 11:52really is. And one thing about Luke Shen
- 11:56hitting 1000 games Max. And if you're listening to this,
- 11:59Google it and read a few of these stories about the struggle
- 12:03that he went through. He played game #700 back in
- 12:072018, so it took him the past six years to play 300 games.
- 12:13And this also included a stint of him having to go down to the
- 12:16minor leagues. Yeah, twice.
- 12:19Over to the minors with three different organizations in 2018
- 12:23and 2019. So yeah, there were points where
- 12:26he could have quit. And his parents said it in the
- 12:28video. That's what they are most proud
- 12:30of, their oldest son, Luke Shen. And I will raise one more
- 12:34complaint, by the way here, Kara, I've said this on the
- 12:36podcast before. Playoff stats should count
- 12:39towards this. He's played 47 playoff games and
- 12:43they don't count towards total games played.
- 12:45It's 1001 regular season games, which I think is insane.
- 12:49Those are the most taxing games. All the playoff stats should
- 12:53count to career totals. OK, we'll, we'll put it in.
- 12:57We'll we'll make a note. Yeah, Kara's staying off of my
- 12:59bone to pick there, which is probably a good move.
- 13:02So the Predators will be back on home ice Tuesday night at 7:45.
- 13:06Late puck drop because of ESPN. Second annual Frozen Frenzy,
- 13:10which is awesome. Games from 5:00 Central till
- 13:13past midnight on ESPN with staggered start times throughout
- 13:18the night every 15 minutes most of the way.
- 13:21There are three games on ESPN. ESPN2 will be showing WHIP
- 13:25around NHL power play coverage. The Preds game is being
- 13:29broadcast in the normal way locally on TV and radio, but
- 13:31we'll also be part of this ESPN timeline.
- 13:35Anyway, that's why the game is late.
- 13:36Preds were actually even later last year for the 1st edition of
- 13:39the Frozen Frenzy and it was awesome to be a part of.
- 13:42It's really good for the NHL. They only do it once a year at
- 13:45the beginning of the season. I to be honest with you, I think
- 13:47they should do this every Tuesday.
- 13:49Go crazy, but only once this year.
- 13:51But anyway, that's why the game on Tuesday night is at 745
- 13:54against the Bruins. Creds will be looking to break
- 13:56their O for they are O and five going up against the Bruins
- 14:00team. That is one and one so far as
- 14:02they get ready to finish up a three-game road trip here in
- 14:05Nashville. It's been a long road trip for
- 14:07the Bruins. It'll be a full week away.
- 14:09They beat the Avalanche on Wednesday night in Denver, then
- 14:13lost in overtime 21 on Saturday night in Salt Lake City to the
- 14:17Utah Hockey Club, and now here they are in Nashville.
- 14:21And the big news for the Preds coming into this game, losing
- 14:23streak aside, is it sounds like we are getting an NHL debut from
- 14:28Zach LaRue, who was called up on Monday and joined the Preds for
- 14:31practice at Centennial on Monday morning.
- 14:34Yeah, I mean, the Preds, let's face it, Max, they need a win
- 14:39and maybe bringing up a a guy like Zach LaRue playing in his
- 14:42NHL debut will give him a spark that they need.
- 14:46We've heard from the players post game, there's some
- 14:48frustration in this room. I mean, I know it.
- 14:51There probably is amongst the fans.
- 14:53We're starting to see a little bit of a of it on social media.
- 14:56There's so much expectation on this team.
- 14:58They haven't picked up two points yet, but it's definitely
- 15:01building in the room and the guys need to channel some of
- 15:04that, try to keep positive emotion and and try to stay
- 15:07positive moving forward, but they need to win.
- 15:10Yeah, we've seen a lot of sticks smashed, a lot of bench doors
- 15:12slammed, a lot of long sits and stairs.
- 15:15So I implore you guys to believe us that the players are taking
- 15:20this extremely personally, and I think everybody's shown it.
- 15:24That physical frustration, to be sure.
- 15:26But to me, the call up of Zach LaRue was about as obvious of a
- 15:31timing call up for an NHL debutante as you could possibly
- 15:34have. The team is O and five.
- 15:36LaRue had an awesome camp. They need somebody to stir
- 15:39things up and it's time. It's time for LaRue and Andrew.
- 15:43Brunette was very complimentary of LaRue after practice today,
- 15:46saying, yeah, he was the last cut at forward to not make the
- 15:49team out of training camp. But he did not pout.
- 15:52He did not sulk. He went down to Milwaukee and
- 15:55continued to play his best, better than a point per game
- 15:59through their first two weekends of the season for the Admirals.
- 16:01Just kept on doing his thing. They did in the AHL playoffs
- 16:04last year. He tied for the AHL playoff lead
- 16:07in goals last year and the Admirals did not make the Calder
- 16:11Cup final, so he didn't even have a full 4 rounds to score.
- 16:15And he still tied for the NHL lead with ten goals with a
- 16:18Capitals player who played significantly more games than
- 16:21him. So if you, if you're if you're
- 16:25Bruno Max, I'm going to put you on the spot here.
- 16:28Who are you putting him on the line with?
- 16:30Well, it looks like to start, based on practice today, he'll
- 16:32be with Cole Smith and Michael McCarron on the fourth line.
- 16:36I wouldn't mind seeing him with some different groups though.
- 16:38So I think LaRue is going to make his presence known.
- 16:41A lot of folks have said along the way, this is the Brad
- 16:44Marshan prototype and who does he get to debut against Brad
- 16:48Marshan and the Boston Bruins at Fred Stone Arena.
- 16:51So I don't think he's going to need to have it dragged out of
- 16:54him. But even if he does, I think
- 16:56Margie will be up to the task going up against everyone who's
- 17:00going to be saying, hey, this is your 21 year old first round
- 17:03pick. Mini me.
- 17:04We're #68 On the other side, Zach LaRue will make his NHL
- 17:08debut tomorrow. This is what LaRue said after
- 17:10practice today about how the Milwaukee Admirals and the
- 17:13Predators player development program have gotten him ready to
- 17:17likely make his NHL debut this week.
- 17:19Huge. I mean, all the staff down there
- 17:21has really been welcoming. You know, it's from KT to, you
- 17:25know, Rouse and you got Matt Donovan now coming in and all
- 17:28them down there. You know, the support and the
- 17:30way they're, they're able to build my game up and, you know,
- 17:32turn me into a real pro has been huge.
- 17:34And the number one thing they told me when when I got down
- 17:37there is that their goal is for me to, you know, play in the
- 17:39National Hockey League. And when, when the time comes
- 17:41out, I'd be ready. And I feel more ready than ever.
- 17:44Zach LaRue has 68 points in 85 professional hockey games, all
- 17:49with the Admirals over the last season.
- 17:51Plus last week Before that, four years in the QMJHL playing in
- 17:56the Maritimes, first for the Moncton Wildcats, then three
- 17:59years for the Halifax Moose Heads in Nova Scotia where he
- 18:02was a star and LED them to a Memorial Cup appearance in 2023
- 18:07two seasons ago. So really excited to see Zach
- 18:10LaRue make his Preds debut. He'll be wearing #68 which is
- 18:13his call up number. He's not completely sure if he's
- 18:16going to stick with that number long term, but he'll be #68 to
- 18:20get things going. It was great to see Zach today.
- 18:22I do want to say a couple things about LaRue before we get a
- 18:26chance to profile him deeper as his NHL career starts and
- 18:28continues. He does.
- 18:30If you're an English speaker, he does prefer just to be called
- 18:33Zach, not Zachary. And his last name, it's spelled
- 18:37L apostrophe HEUREUX, which is intimidatingly French in print.
- 18:44It's just LaRue. Just LaRue.
- 18:48That's all right. Don't you love it to be a young
- 18:51guy to come up and get to take on a team like Boston?
- 18:54It it throws me back to Luke Evangelisa's NHL debut, taking
- 18:58on the Penguins and that hit he had on on Malkin when he come
- 19:01out and you're just like, OK, I'm setting the tone.
- 19:04So I'm excited and I'm excited to see what he can bring against
- 19:08Boston. I thought the literal exact same
- 19:10thing today, so I'm glad you thought it too.
- 19:13One more shout out. We want to give our moment of
- 19:16the week here on The POP. It's not an interview of the
- 19:19week, but I think it's a young man who we may have to interview
- 19:22down the road for the pregame blue liner of the game on
- 19:26Thursday night, a very, very, very small goalie skated out and
- 19:33stood next to UC Soros for the national anthem.
- 19:35A lot of folks were taking pictures.
- 19:37I was taking pictures. Super cute little boy out there.
- 19:41But I knew we'd have a great picture from the great John
- 19:43Russell, and he came through and I tweeted the picture and it's
- 19:48gotten a ton of love on Twitter. And I was able to identify the
- 19:51young Smashville hockey player. So we got to give a shout out to
- 19:55Wells Ford, who is 6 years old. And his dad told me that he got
- 19:59to meet his two favorite players when he went on the ice.
- 20:02And his two favorite players are UC Soros and Nash.
- 20:07Oh gosh. But he's.
- 20:10He's in full goalie gear, except he's wearing skater gloves
- 20:16because he was waving a flag when he came on the ice and he
- 20:19couldn't hold the flag with his goalie gloves on.
- 20:23But he's right next to UC, both locked in.
- 20:25And I tweeted big goalie, little goalie.
- 20:29And of course, there were many jokes about how this is the
- 20:31first time ever that UC Soros has been the big goalie, which
- 20:34the jokes write themselves. Come on people get original.
- 20:38But my other favorite reply to it was a quote tweet from I
- 20:42think just a hockey fan. I don't think it was even
- 20:44someone who's a preds fan, but it was a a joke about dating
- 20:48life in general, which was this is this is what the difference
- 20:51between 6 O to 511 looks like for guys, and it's like a 5 foot
- 20:56difference. So I chuckled at that one as
- 20:58well. But yeah, super cute.
- 21:00I tweeted it a few days ago now at Max hers talks.
- 21:03So if you want to see it, go check it out there.
- 21:06But yeah, super cute. UC Soros and young Smashville up
- 21:09and coming goalie prospect Wells Ford.
- 21:13He's got a great set up. He's got nice gear.
- 21:15He's got a custom helmet. He's got the pixel prez jersey
- 21:18for his kids team. Big shout out to Wells.
- 21:20So we'll be seeing him at a game soon and maybe down the road
- 21:23we'll get to hear from Wells here on the podcast.
- 21:26All right, I love it and I I won the last bit of information too
- 21:30for you. If you've been following us
- 21:33along on the broadcast, we are now the FanDuel Sports Network.
- 21:36So it's the same channel, same app, it's everything you need to
- 21:40know. We're just on a it's a new home.
- 21:42We have a new name, FanDuel Sports Network.
- 21:44So mark that down, Maxi. Good news, but very little has
- 21:48changed, if anything, about how people can watch the games.
- 21:51Correct. If you're watching the games one
- 21:53way, you can continue to watch them that way.
- 21:56Correct. All right, but don't go to
- 21:58Carrie Hammer for betting advice.
- 21:59That's not what's changing. You you don't want to know.
- 22:03I have no bets. I will make a prediction.
- 22:05I will make a prediction. All right, let's just call out a
- 22:09a Zach LaRue first goal in his debut.
- 22:13Wow, can I throw that out there? That's a very bold prediction,
- 22:17but I'm feeling it a little bit. I think that I I think if he's
- 22:21going to play out there with Cole Smith and Michael McCarron,
- 22:23I think that line has been buzzing.
- 22:25We saw Cole Smith have an opportunity to move up and
- 22:27state, excuse me, skate with Stamkos.
- 22:31I think he's the guy that can drive a line, so you get that
- 22:34line going and I'm calling it Max.
- 22:37I think they're going to come out firing on Tuesday night.
- 22:40All right, Kara's calling it Fred's looking for their first
- 22:42win at O and five against the Bruins on Tuesday night at 7:45.

- 22:49Friday before the weekend. back-to-back in Chicago on
- 22:53Friday night against the Blackhawks and Saturday night in
- 22:55Smashville, back home against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
- 22:59She's Kara Hammer from the FanDuel Sports Network, the new
- 23:03name of Fred's TV. I'm Max, hers from Preds Radio.

- 23:07our thing. Join us for Smashville Live as
- 23:10well this Wednesday night at Brewhouse 100.
