- 0:33Speaker 1: Hi, and welcome back to Hooded. What Now the history
- 0:36Speaker 1: podcast that's not your history class? Betty sood with me.
- 0:40Speaker 1: You're still rather unwell? Host Katie Charlwood, SEC Parson and
- 0:45Speaker 1: reader of pos I am surviving because I am on
- 0:50Speaker 1: antibiotics and pink colors and I still constantly feel like
- 0:52Speaker 1: I'm gonna be sick. But it's fine. The cough is
- 0:55Speaker 1: mainly gone on. The fever isn't there anymore, So that's something.
- 0:59Speaker 1: These are the bitty So it's any bits that I
- 1:02Speaker 1: like that I want to talk about, We're going to
- 1:03Speaker 1: talk about. And because we're still in spooky season, I
- 1:06Speaker 1: want to talk about the history of the jack O Lantum.
- 1:11Speaker 1: So to do this, we're actually gonna have to delve
- 1:14Speaker 1: into mythology a wee bit. The thing about mythology is
- 1:17Speaker 1: the mythology is very important to help you understand history,
- 1:21Speaker 1: you know, it helps teach us where, how and why
- 1:24Speaker 1: something became part of a culture. So the Jack O lantern,
- 1:27Speaker 1: as many of you know, is it's a pumpkin with
- 1:30Speaker 1: a face carved in it, not even a face. Now,
- 1:33Speaker 1: it's got like people do like mad shit. They've got
- 1:35Speaker 1: like funky designs. I go really simple usually when I
- 1:39Speaker 1: do my Jack O lantern, because I do pumpkin Jack
- 1:42Speaker 1: or Jack Skellington from Nightmare before Christmas, Like that's kind
- 1:47Speaker 1: of usually where I aim, because it's pretty simple to do,
- 1:50Speaker 1: because I don't know if you've ever carved a pumpkin,
- 1:54Speaker 1: but it is not simple like I've seen people do
- 1:56Speaker 1: it with drulls and stuff, which honestly seems like a
- 1:59Speaker 1: much better idea. Yeah, here's the thing. Pumpkins, as you
- 2:02Speaker 1: may not know, not quite indigenous to Ireland or Scotland
- 2:09Speaker 1: or anywhere within this particular European temperate zone. I mean,
- 2:14Speaker 1: they're probably from other places, but they're not from here. Like,
- 2:16Speaker 1: pumpkins are very much an American thing, especially that bright
- 2:20Speaker 1: orange whatever type of pumpkin that is. I'm sure it
- 2:23Speaker 1: has a proper name. The only pumpkin I know the
- 2:26Speaker 1: name of is a baby bear pumpkin because it is
- 2:29Speaker 1: small and I wanted to grow in in my garden
- 2:32Speaker 1: and then I forgot to do it. So, yes, you know,
- 2:34Speaker 1: I've never been to a pumpkin patch. I really want
- 2:36Speaker 1: to go to a pumpkin pat like I've never been,
- 2:38Speaker 1: and I really want to go. But that's neither here
- 2:40Speaker 1: nor there. So now that we've got on board that
- 2:43Speaker 1: pumpkins not from here. When you know the people were
- 2:48Speaker 1: out doing the guising of the mummers or they're the
- 2:51Speaker 1: precursor to trigger training, they would have a lantern that
- 2:55Speaker 1: was carved not from a pumpkin, but from a What
- 3:00Speaker 1: do you think it is? I know you're thinking Ireland,
- 3:02Speaker 1: some of you. Some of you, I know what you're doing.
- 3:04Speaker 1: You're thinking it's gonna be a spud, it's gonna be
- 3:06Speaker 1: a potato. But no, my friends, no, not a tatty situation.
- 3:11Speaker 1: It's not a tatty but a turnip. I say, it's
- 3:14Speaker 1: a turnup. It's a Swede. Makes you wonder whether or
- 3:17Speaker 1: not as popular in Scandinavia. But anyway, I I was
- 3:21Speaker 1: a shit joke, kind of did it anyway. Actually, I'm
- 3:24Speaker 1: gonna talk about a turn up for a second. I
- 3:26Speaker 1: don't know if you've ever tried to carve a face
- 3:30Speaker 1: into a turnip. First of all, it is much more terrifying.
- 3:35Speaker 1: A carved turnip face is so much more terrifying than
- 3:39Speaker 1: than a pumpkin. Pumpkins kind of have a little jolly
- 3:44Speaker 1: sense to them, you know, there's a carved turnip. It
- 3:46Speaker 1: just kind of looks like a shrunken boghead, the shrunken
- 3:49Speaker 1: head of a bog body. It's not.
- 3:52Speaker 3: It does not exude whimsical charm, No, it is. It
- 3:58Speaker 3: is scary and so really fucking hard to do. I
- 4:02Speaker 3: tried to carve a turnip, and I swear to God,
- 4:05Speaker 3: but anyway, they would carve a face and said the turnip,
- 4:09Speaker 3: and they would light it and it would become their
- 4:12Speaker 3: way of lighting their weight from.
- 4:14Speaker 1: A to b. I probly thinking this is nice, okay,
- 4:17Speaker 1: So why the fuck is it called a jack a lantern? Well?
- 4:19Speaker 1: It all traces back to Irish folklore and myth, the
- 4:23Speaker 1: story of a man named Stingy Jack. Stingy Jack, well,
- 4:29Speaker 1: in a way not conforming to any Irish stereotype whatsoever,
- 4:33Speaker 1: was a fella who liked a wheat tipple. He did
- 4:36Speaker 1: like a wee drink. Now in fairness, he was known
- 4:38Speaker 1: though to be you know, a wee bit manipulative, a
- 4:42Speaker 1: wee bit deceptive. Do you know any man like that?
- 4:45Speaker 1: It just feels really hmmmm. Anyhow, so he's known as
- 4:49Speaker 1: being a bit of a shithead and you know, sneaky,
- 4:52Speaker 1: silver tongued the whole shaban. And the Devil's like, who
- 4:57Speaker 1: is this man? I must meet him because I don't
- 5:01Speaker 1: quite believe that he can be this prolific, you know
- 5:05Speaker 1: what I mean? So the Devil heads out to Ireland.
- 5:08Speaker 1: He comes up from the fiery depths below and he
- 5:11Speaker 1: waits for his prey. Jack being Jack, was absolutely hammered
- 5:17Speaker 1: dropping along an old country road where he comes upon
- 5:21Speaker 1: a body on a cobblestone path and he's like, what
- 5:25Speaker 1: the actual fuck is this? And he pokes it with
- 5:27Speaker 1: a stick and his face looks at him and it
- 5:30Speaker 1: is the face of pure evil with an eerie grin.
- 5:35Speaker 1: And Jack was like, shit, that's the devil. Hey, he's
- 5:39Speaker 1: eating so this is it? And Jack is like, shit,
- 5:44Speaker 1: I've been an absolute bastard. He's coming from us soul
- 5:48Speaker 1: and he's like wow. Fuck, He's like, and how am
- 5:50Speaker 1: I going to get out of this? But being the
- 5:52Speaker 1: quick thing career is, he goes listen, lucy baby, I
- 5:55Speaker 1: got a last request. Can I have one last drink?
- 5:59Speaker 1: You know, but for entering a hell? And Satan's like,
- 6:03Speaker 1: fuck it, why not? So the devil takes Jack to
- 6:07Speaker 1: a local pub. Jack starts drinking more than one drink,
- 6:10Speaker 1: as you know, as it happens, and Jack's like, okay,
- 6:14Speaker 1: thanks very much. Now you have to pay the barman,
- 6:17Speaker 1: and Satan's like this outfort does not have pockets. Where
- 6:21Speaker 1: do you think I'm keeping the change? And then decides
- 6:24Speaker 1: that fine, okay, you know what, and sides, fuck, I
- 6:28Speaker 1: did agree, I'll get the bar tab paid. So he
- 6:31Speaker 1: turns himself into a silver coin, you know, so that
- 6:34Speaker 1: Jack can pay the bartender and then you know, he
- 6:36Speaker 1: can just switch back when he's not looking. And so
- 6:38Speaker 1: he's like, huh, well, you scheming little shit. Absolutely turns
- 6:44Speaker 1: himself into a silver coin and Jack takes the coin.
- 6:48Speaker 1: But does he hand it to the bar man? No,
- 6:50Speaker 1: he fucking does not. He slips it into his pocket.
- 6:53Speaker 1: What else is in his pocket? And you're like, okay,
- 6:56Speaker 1: that's weird. What if he transforms when he's in there,
- 6:58Speaker 1: You're just gonna have the death burst through your trousers.
- 7:02Speaker 1: When no, but Unbeknownst to Bialgibub, Jack had a crucifix
- 7:08Speaker 1: in his pocket, meaning that what do you mean he
- 7:11Speaker 1: couldn't turn back into his normal devil yourself now because
- 7:16Speaker 1: he's stuck the way he is. He's like, Jack, get
- 7:19Speaker 1: me away from this crucifix. And Jack's like, all right,
- 7:21Speaker 1: but I have a demand. I'll let you be free, devil,
- 7:25Speaker 1: but you're gonna give me ten more years before you
- 7:26Speaker 1: come back from so and the Devil's like, fine, ten
- 7:29Speaker 1: years later, as per his promise, Satan's there and he's like, Jack,
- 7:34Speaker 1: come on, it's been a decade. It's time to go.
- 7:37Speaker 1: And Jack goes, ah, lucy baby, I'm so hungry. Can
- 7:41Speaker 1: I just have one last apple? Satan's like, you want
- 7:45Speaker 1: an apple? I want an apple? Okay, because for some
- 7:48Speaker 1: reason the actual devil didn't think this might be up
- 7:51Speaker 1: to something. But all right, Jack's like, listen, and he
- 7:54Speaker 1: need to climb this tree and get an apple. And
- 7:57Speaker 1: so the devil climbs the tree and as he's up
- 7:59Speaker 1: the tree, somehow Jack has a fucked on of Chris
- 8:03Speaker 1: affixes that he places around the base of the tree,
- 8:06Speaker 1: meaning that the devil is stuck in the tree He's like, buddy,
- 8:10Speaker 1: I've got to take your soul to Hell, and Jack's like,
- 8:12Speaker 1: not today, Satan and makes another demand, and he makes
- 8:18Speaker 1: a deal with the devil, stating the devil will never
- 8:21Speaker 1: take his soul to Hell, and the devil is stuck
- 8:23Speaker 1: up a tree, can't do anything. He's like fine, fine.
- 8:27Speaker 1: The devil, having absolutely no choice in the matter, has
- 8:29Speaker 1: to agree to the deal. So eventually Jack drinks himself
- 8:33Speaker 1: to death and and stinch Jack's soul heads towards the
- 8:37Speaker 1: Pearly Gates and Saint Peter goes, sorry, you're not on
- 8:41Speaker 1: the list because you've spent your whole life just drinking
- 8:44Speaker 1: and being deceitful and full of sin and drinking. You
- 8:49Speaker 1: know you're not coming through those gates. So he wasn't
- 8:52Speaker 1: getting into heaven. So he's like no, Heaven says no.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Then has to travel to the underworld, doesn't he, and
- 8:57Speaker 1: to this point is trying to get into Hell, and
- 9:00Speaker 1: the Devil's like, mm, sorry, oh sorry, Jack. Remember that
- 9:04Speaker 1: time we made a deep where you made sure that
- 9:06Speaker 1: I absolutely would not be able to take your soul
- 9:08Speaker 1: into hell. Well this is what's happening now. But I'm
- 9:13Speaker 1: not a complaint Dick, so he gives Jack an ember
- 9:17Speaker 1: to light his way. Because Stingy Jack is doomed because
- 9:21Speaker 1: he was too sneaky for hell and too shitty for heaven,
- 9:25Speaker 1: his soul was trapped to roam the world between on
- 9:30Speaker 1: the plains between good and evil, with only an ember
- 9:33Speaker 1: to light his way. So this ember, this glowing coal,
- 9:37Speaker 1: effectively stindy Jack, puts it inside a hollow turnip and
- 9:41Speaker 1: roams the earth on the plains between good and evil forever.
- 9:45Speaker 1: So this figure was known in Ireland as Jack of
- 9:49Speaker 1: the Lantern, which eventually became Jack o Lantern. And so
- 9:53Speaker 1: end the story of Stingy Jack. If you liked my
- 9:57Speaker 1: retelling of this little folklore story and the origins of Halloween,
