- 1:03Scripture tells us that in this world, we will have trouble.
- 1:06And no doubt each of you know that to be true, but God says that our battles
- 1:11are not ours to fight. They're His.
- 1:14Join us in this podcast of Woman at the Well Ministries as Kim takes us on a
- 1:19journey through the Scriptures, revealing what it means to trust in God enough
- 1:23to allow Him to fight your battles.
- 1:27Hello, and thank you for joining us in this podcast of Woman at the Well Ministries. Let's pray.
- 1:33Our kind and most gracious to Heavenly Father, Lord, we come to you with thankful hearts.
- 1:37Thankful hearts that you're a God that hears and answers prayer,
- 1:41that you're a God that cares, and you're a God that knows and understands.
- 1:45And Lord, as we begin to read your scriptures, we ask, Lord,
- 1:49that you would help us, that you would help us to know exactly who you are,
- 1:55to know exactly what it is that you would have us to do.
- 1:59And Lord, that we would trust in you completely and fully.
- 2:02Lord, we ask that you would watch over us, protect us, lead and guide us,
- 2:06we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
- 2:10There's a familiar account in the Bible about David and Goliath.
- 2:16It's found in 1 Samuel chapter 17. and David has been tasked to take food to
- 2:23his older brothers that are in the army.
- 2:28And the problem is, is that when he gets there, David is so charged with the
- 2:36Lord that his plans are different than everyone else's.
- 2:43And the ticket is
- 2:46is that david's plans have been orchestrated
- 2:50and they have been given to him
- 2:53by god and they all
- 2:56stem from the fact that david is appalled that goliath would say such treacherous
- 3:06things about his god so we find david being asked by his dad to go take this food to his brothers.
- 3:15And while he's talking to his brothers
- 3:18and he's bringing the food to his brothers, David realizes that...
- 3:27Everyone there is afraid to fight Goliath. And Goliath is taunting them.
- 3:36But David, he's so enraged by the fact that Goliath would say such horrible
- 3:46things about his God that he has to defend his God.
- 3:54I wonder, do we defend God that way?
- 3:59Do we care when people take his name in vain?
- 4:04Do we listen and just pray about it and hope that they'll stop?
- 4:14When people are blaspheming the Lord and ridiculing the Christian walk,
- 4:23Do we stay silent and quiet?
- 4:27I know that we're told in Romans that we're to live peacefully with all men as much as possible.
- 4:34But David wasn't going to stand for anyone to talk bad about his God.
- 4:41And I have to believe that most of us would not allow people to say bad things
- 4:46about the people we love.
- 4:49Untruths. We would not let go spoken without rebuttal.
- 4:55Harsh words and hateful accusations. we would stop people in their tracks because
- 5:02we don't let people say those kind of things about the people we love.
- 5:07And I'm afraid that many of us
- 5:09have forgotten that Jesus is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
- 5:12I think many of us have forgotten that he's as real as the hand you hold when
- 5:18you hold your best friend.
- 5:20I believe that he is forgotten in most of our thoughts.
- 5:26But not for David.
- 5:30David had a rebuttal, and he said, Let no man's heart fail because of him. That's the Philistine.
- 5:40Thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. In 1 Samuel 17, verse 31.
- 5:50And Saul says to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight
- 5:54with him, for thou art but a youth, and he's a man of war from his youth.
- 5:59So Saul is looking at things in a very logical way.
- 6:03You're a kid, you have no experience. This is the big bad giant.
- 6:07All of these experienced warriors are afraid of him. You can't do this.
- 6:13So then David begins to recount what he's done in his life through the power of the Lord.
- 6:21And so we pick up 1 Samuel 17 at verse 34.
- 6:26And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep,
- 6:29and there came a lion and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock.
- 6:33And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth.
- 6:37And when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
- 6:42Thy servants slew both the lion and the bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine
- 6:48shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
- 6:53David said, Moreover, the Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion
- 6:58and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.
- 7:04David wasn't fighting his own battle, and David wasn't going into the battle in his own strength.
- 7:13No, David was completely relying upon God to do for him what he'd always done, deliver him.
- 7:23David had taken account in his heart and in his mind the things that the Lord
- 7:29had already done for him.
- 7:32David had a heart for God.
- 7:36And David would pay attention to the things that God had done for him and through him.
- 7:45So when it came time to fight this Philistine, David had full confidence because
- 7:52he had already made note of what God was, has, and will do for him.
- 7:59He had already determined where his victory lie.
- 8:03He understood that his strength, his power, and his victory came from the Lord.
- 8:10And thus, when Saul is talking to him and asking him to go away because you
- 8:19can't do this, David answers,
- 8:24Pretty much you're right. I can't. But the God in me can and will and has done so.
- 8:32He talks about being delivered by the Lord from the paw of the lion.
- 8:40And then David does what he always does. He goes in the name of the Lord.
- 8:48So Saul says unto David, go and the Lord be with thee. David was sure of that
- 8:53because that's why David was going.
- 8:55And Saul armed David with his armor, and he put on a helmet of brass upon his
- 9:00head. Also, he armed him with a coat of maul.
- 9:03And David girded his sword upon his armor, and he assayed to go, for he had not proved it.
- 9:10And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these, for I have not proved them.
- 9:16And David put them off of him.
- 9:20So Saul is giving David everything the world has to make him equipped to do
- 9:28this job that is in front of him, which is defeat Goliath.
- 9:33But David says, no, I can't wear these.
- 9:38I have no confidence in these. They've never helped me before,
- 9:43and I can't wear them. They don't fit me.
- 9:49David was unwilling to take the best strategies of the world.
- 9:55He was unwilling to succumb to the things of the world that logically seemed would be helpful.
- 10:04No, instead, he was going back to what had proved to be correct all of his life,
- 10:10and that was that the Lord would deliver him. He was going to follow as the Lord told him to do so.
- 10:18So instead of putting on the things of the world, he took them off.
- 10:22I wonder how different our lives would be if our heart was after God like David's.
- 10:32Now, David slipped and fell, and he did a bunch of stuff. But when it come down
- 10:36to it, David was a man after God's own heart.
- 10:39And he understood who God was. And in this occasion, when he could choose the world, David does not.
- 10:49When he could go along to get along, David does not.
- 10:54When he could choose safety, David chose the assignment given him.
- 11:02When David could follow the logical way, David abandoned logic for faith.
- 11:10Faith that had been tried.
- 11:14Faith that was true.
- 11:16Faith that fit him. Now, David chose not to wear the armor because it didn't fit him.
- 11:25David was different. He wasn't older like the other guys. He probably wasn't
- 11:33fully developed. He was a ruddy little guy.
- 11:36He was probably scrawny. He was young.
- 11:39That armor was meant for someone that looked different.
- 11:44My friends, the things of the world are for people who look different.
- 11:49Not necessarily from the naked visible eye, but from the way their heart and
- 11:56their soul and their lives are formed.
- 12:01The things of the world don't fit well to the one walking in the center of God's will.
- 12:06The things of the world have been taken away. Old things have passed away.
- 12:12Behold, all things have become new. They are new creatures in Christ Jesus.
- 12:16The things of the world, they don't fit.
- 12:19They look awkward on the child of God because the child of God,
- 12:23while they have their foot in the world is certainly convicted because they
- 12:28don't belong there. It doesn't work for them.
- 12:32They're not supposed to have it on.
- 12:36Therefore, it doesn't fit. Woe unto you who the things of the world fit nicely.
- 12:45Oh, to be friend of the world is to be an enemy of God. James is clear on that.
- 12:52So David, he looks at Saul, and look, Saul's a man of authority.
- 12:58He's in charge, and he's telling him this is what you should do.
- 13:03Some of us allow people in our lives to speak into our lives that have no right to.
- 13:10They might have a position. They might have influence in the world.
- 13:15They may have all the things that seemingly look like they can talk to you,
- 13:19but they weren't sent to you by God. They're not speaking God's word.
- 13:23They don't have your best intent at heart, and they're not who you're to listen to.
- 13:29Saul was the man in charge according to the rules of the land,
- 13:34but God is always in charge because all things are under his feet.
- 13:39Nothing is above him. He has dominion over all things, and we are to submit
- 13:44ourselves unto him under the mighty hand of God that he would exalt us in due
- 13:49time. Be careful who you let speak into your life.
- 13:52All things that glitter and shine aren't gold.
- 13:57Try them and know they're true. This is what David's saying to Saul.
- 14:02And he's doing it respectfully, but he's doing it authoritatively. I'm not wearing this.
- 14:07It doesn't fit.
- 14:10If the things of the world fit, you better do some real soul searching.
- 14:20Because we are to be zealous of good works. We are to be peculiar people.
- 14:23We are to be separated from the world.
- 14:26We are to come out from among the world.
- 14:29We are to go to where they are and bring them to where we are.
- 14:32We are not to hang out where they are.
- 14:34I take offense when you take my Jesus in places he doesn't want to go,
- 14:39in places he shouldn't be.
- 14:42Ambassadors of the Most High God, we've got to protect the God in us.
- 14:48So David understands from the get-go who it is that's fighting his battles.
- 14:57I believe he understands that God never lost a battle and he wasn't going to
- 15:00start with his. And I submit that same truth to you today.
- 15:05So when he's in front of authority, he has the same confidence and faith that
- 15:09he has when he's alone, because you're not going to have the faith and confidence
- 15:15in God in public if you haven't done the work in private.
- 15:19If you haven't spent time alone with Jesus Christ in his word,
- 15:24developing a personal relationship with him, don't think it's going to suddenly
- 15:27magically appear in your heart and your mind when you are in public,
- 15:31when you are under duress, when you are stressed.
- 15:34Oh no. But the one who has a personal walk with Jesus Christ,
- 15:38the one who listens to his word,
- 15:42who loves him and his commandments are not grievous to him, that is the one
- 15:46who in the midst of stress will
- 15:48be calm because he knows that the one who controls the winds and the waves.
- 15:55Who has control of all things is the one who walks with him.
- 16:02David was all about protecting God's reputation.
- 16:09He was all about being God's man to do God's work through the power God would bestow upon him.
- 16:17And so he was faithful and he was confident. And he says to Saul,
- 16:21I'm going to do this, but we're going to do it without the things of the world.
- 16:26We're going to do it without the things that you think are going to bring the victory.
- 16:33Jesus often works in ways that are mysterious to us because his ways are higher
- 16:39than our ways and his thoughts are higher than our thoughts,
- 16:42but he also does things to demonstrate clearly where the victory comes from.
- 16:49And david being a little boy on his own in no way was going to be able to do that victory,
- 16:58but jesus had delivered him before and he was convinced that he would deliver
- 17:03him again so he rejects logic and he rejects the things of the world and he
- 17:09sticks to what he knows is true True.
- 17:14What he says in 1 Samuel 17, verse 47, is pretty impressive.
- 17:20He says, And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword
- 17:25and spear, for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hands.
- 17:30That's what he looks square in the face of Goliath and says,
- 17:36those who are walking hand in hand with Jesus, whose faith is completely focused
- 17:43and embedded and rooted and grounded in the word of God,
- 17:48in Jesus himself, who's walking with the Trinity,
- 17:52with authority and power that is given to them because of their walk,
- 17:57because of their belief, because of the incredible strength of their faith.
- 18:01Those people will look the devil straight in the eye, and they'll take him down without any sweat,
- 18:08without any hesitation, because they are fully convinced they have tried and
- 18:13proved, and they fully know that greater is he that is in them than he that is in the world.
- 18:20As you look in verse 40 of 1 Samuel chapter 17, we see that here's what David chooses.
- 18:27He chooses his staff in one hand and five smooth stones out of the brook.
- 18:33He puts them in his little shepherd's bag, even in a scrip, and his sling was
- 18:38in his hand, and he drew near to the Philistine.
- 18:42He wasn't hesitant.
- 18:44When God calls you, you need to go head first, faith-filled,
- 18:52into the battle that God is fighting.
- 18:57David has a staff, a slingshot, and a few stones. Five.
- 19:03He goes towards the Philistine. Now, when the giant looks at David,
- 19:11he's completely disgusted.
- 19:14In fact, he probably feels like David is mocking him.
- 19:19Like, who are you to fight me?
- 19:22See, David says to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword and with a
- 19:28spear and with a shield, but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts.
- 19:33The God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
- 19:37This day will the Lord deliver thee unto my hand,
- 19:42and I will smite thee and take thine head from thee, and I will give the carcasses
- 19:47of the host of the Philistines this day and to the fowls of the air and to the
- 19:51wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
- 19:56And all the assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear,
- 20:01for the battle is the Lord's and he will give you into our hands.
- 20:06I want you to look at what David says.
- 20:09David reveals some incredibly important truths that are a result of every life
- 20:19that is fully sold out and completely committed to God.
- 20:24The first thing is, is you'll go head into the assignment God has given you.
- 20:29You'll go head in to the battle because you're going with faith, and it's not you.
- 20:34You're surrounded, covered, completely protected by Jesus Christ,
- 20:39and you are following, just like he said to deny yourself and take up your cross and follow him.
- 20:44It isn't your battle. It is the Lord's.
- 20:48And he fully gives God the credit before the results even take place.
- 20:55That's the demonstration of unwavering, powerful, strength-filled faith.
- 21:04That, my friend, is Proverbs 3, 5-7 demonstrated.
- 21:12Proverbs 3, 5-7 says, Trust in the Lord with all thine heart,
- 21:17and lean not into thine own understanding.
- 21:20In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
- 21:24Be not wise in thine own eyes, fear the Lord, and depart from evil.
- 21:30David wasn't being wise in his eyes. Had he been wise in his own eyes,
- 21:35David would have taken the wisdom of the world, and he would have tried to protect
- 21:39himself with everything he could see.
- 21:41But David fought his battles with Jesus Christ.
- 21:45He understood that the battles were with angels, and the battles were with devils,
- 21:51and the devils were principalities of the world, and that it wasn't what he
- 21:54could see that was fighting him.
- 21:56It's what he couldn't see, and so he had to battle with what you couldn't see
- 22:01because that's what destroys the devil.
- 22:04You can't see a physical form of God in me, but you can watch his hand on my
- 22:10life, and you can watch his work through my life, and you can watch him make
- 22:14a way where there is no way.
- 22:16You can watch him defeat what I could not defeat in my own right.
- 22:21You can watch him give me blessings from on high.
- 22:24You can watch him destroy my enemies.
- 22:27You can watch him shut the mouths of lions against me.
- 22:31You can watch him look at people who shut doors that he bulges wide open and
- 22:36makes them look at me whenever he has done so you can watch him work.
- 22:43Ways I never could. But David said the battle's not his.
- 22:48It belongs to the Lord. David's just following. That's what he did every day.
- 22:54The battles in your life, there are people out to get you, I'm sure,
- 23:00especially if you're working for the Lord.
- 23:04And they'll think that they have stopped you in your path.
- 23:10They'll think that they have rerouted the course of your life because of a decision they can make.
- 23:18And those same people will sit as God lifts you up, knowing that they have done
- 23:25everything they could to keep it from happening.
- 23:29And in front of all of them, God will exalt you and they will have to listen
- 23:36and see and know that God's hands on your life.
- 23:43That's what David was telling Saul.
- 23:48That's what God did for David in front of Goliath. Goliath had mocked him.
- 23:56Goliath actually was offended that they would put such a scrawny little thing up against him.
- 24:04Prius had so discounted David that his presence in front of him infuriated him.
- 24:13This battle that you're going in, the mouths that are gossiping against you,
- 24:19the ones that are throwing torpedoes at you and snares in your path, they're powerless.
- 24:29You'll step over the snares. The gossip will fall off.
- 24:35Like Teslon, around you, and the doors that they've locked and padlocked and
- 24:41slammed and are guarding will simply fall down, and you'll walk through them.
- 24:50David did just that. God set up the victory, and he walked in it.
- 24:58Now, you think he might be talking trash. You think he might be bragging.
- 25:02But David is never bragging on himself.
- 25:05David's bragging about God. He doesn't take credit that he's going to beat Goliath.
- 25:11He doesn't take credit for his tremendous markmanship that he thinks he has
- 25:16with a couple of stones and a slingshot.
- 25:19He isn't bragging about his incredible body that is all built and muscular and six-packed.
- 25:27No, what he's saying is, but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts,
- 25:32the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
- 25:35Look, I'm coming to you out of God.
- 25:38This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand.
- 25:43No point is he trying to get revenge at no point is he taking credit.
- 25:50He's just saying facts. You're going down because my God, you know,
- 25:56the one that you mocked, the one that you defied, the one that you told me what I could do.
- 26:02My God. Well, he's making a way and you're in the way. And I will take you down.
- 26:10That's what God said to David. And David said, you're in his way.
- 26:16And he's going to take you down. And I'm going to deliver this victory so all the world can see.
- 26:24You fight with a sword and a spear, but I come in the name of the Lord.
- 26:29That battle you're facing, be careful.
- 26:33Be careful. You can't gloat because the Lord is dismissing your nemesis.
- 26:42You can't gloat and think you've done something and that you're special.
- 26:46You just have to be obedient. But you can proclaim from the top of the mountain
- 26:52that they thought you couldn't climb, that Jesus is Lord, and Jesus loves me, this I know,
- 27:00because the Bible tells me so.
- 27:02When David gets to the mountain of this victory, stands on the enemy.
- 27:12Cuts the enemy's head off. He proclaims the victory was the Lord's.
- 27:19And you know how we know that God did it and it wasn't him?
- 27:25Because David's victory was always meant to display to all that God takes care of his own,
- 27:34that faith prevails, and that God has a good plan for you.
- 27:41To give you a hope and to prosper you.
- 27:45You were more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus. And God is fully aware of your
- 27:50frailties. He's fully aware of your limitations.
- 27:53He's aware of your quirks and the little things in your life that the buttons that are easily...
- 28:02He's aware of all of it. But his work in your life is to make things good for
- 28:09you and to bring him glory.
- 28:12So let's look at how he does it in David. David has proclaimed the Lord is going to deliver him.
- 28:20David has done his part to let everyone around see that God is orchestrating
- 28:27this and that he's obedient and following.
- 28:31And it came to pass when the Philistine arose and came and drew nigh to meet
- 28:35David, that David hasted and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
- 28:40He's so confident in God that he's running towards what God has called him to do.
- 28:47He's not running away like Jonah did.
- 28:51He's not modifying like Abraham did in the early beginning.
- 28:56No, he's running headfirst to meet the Philistine.
- 29:00And David put his hand in his bag and took thence a stone and slain it and smote
- 29:05the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead.
- 29:10And then look, for David to hit the giant in the forehead, he had to be swinging
- 29:20that slingshot from in front.
- 29:25For the rock to hit Goliath in the forehead.
- 29:30The force had to be coming from in front, pushing backward.
- 29:36But in 1 Samuel 17, 49, it says,
- 29:41And he slain it and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk
- 29:47into his forehead, and then pay close attention, and he fell upon his face to the earth.
- 29:54Will tell you that if he had been hit hard enough to knock him down from in
- 29:59front, he would have had to have fallen backwards.
- 30:02David, nor the stone, did not deliver death to Goliath.
- 30:11But just as David had prophesied, just as David had proclaimed,
- 30:18just as David knew through a faithful heart,
- 30:24God delivered Goliath because Goliath did not fall backwards.
- 30:28Goliath fell forward.
- 30:30So something besides the stone, something besides the force that David could
- 30:39manufacture with his weak little body delivered Goliath's.
- 30:46David, who's fighting your battles? David is clear on who is fighting his.
- 30:53Who are you putting your trust in? Who are you relying on?
- 30:57Do you know that he will protect you? In Psalms 91, he says,
- 31:01he shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust.
- 31:04His truth shall be thy shield and thy buckler.
- 31:08David was willing to do whatever God asked him to do because he knew that the
- 31:12truth of Jesus and who he was, he knew that the power of God and his immutable ability to never lie,
- 31:22that he said he would protect him.
- 31:25He said that he was with him. He said he would lead them.
- 31:28David understood because he was a man after God's own heart,
- 31:32and he had a personal relationship with him, and he had a faith that would not
- 31:37fail because his faith was in Jesus and God and the Holy Spirit.
- 31:43David knew God, and we know Jesus through the New Testament,
- 31:48and because we know Jesus, we can know God.
- 31:51God loves you, and he is fighting your battle, but will you go headfirst following,
- 31:57or are you going headfirst leading? There's a difference.
- 32:02David went headfirst into the assignment God had given him, but he wasn't leading. He was following.
- 32:09Some of us get ahead of God because we don't believe he's our shield and our
- 32:13buckler. We don't even give him any chance to beat.
- 32:15We step outside the shield. We step outside of his protection,
- 32:19and we give the defeat to the devil. We throw up the white flag.
- 32:26Did not take the logic of the world. David did not fit in to the world.
- 32:32David was careful who he listened to and allowed to speak into his life.
- 32:38And David trusted the Lord with all of his heart, soul, mind,
- 32:42and body. And he loved them the same.
- 32:45And he understood that he gave the victory.
- 32:48In Psalms 144.10, it says, It is he that giveth salvation unto kings,
- 32:53who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword.
- 32:57It is him who will deliver you. He's no respecter of persons.
- 33:03The question is, do you trust him as David trusted him in this account?
- 33:08Do you love him as David loved him? Are you a person after God's own heart?
- 33:15Are you willing to run face forward, following the Lord?
- 33:20Or are you like Jonah and you run in the opposite direction?
- 33:25Is the Bible something you hear on Sundays and perhaps Wednesdays?
- 33:30Is this something you read and you nourish yourself with and you make sure that
- 33:35you understand the promises of God and you get to know him and you spend time with him?
- 33:41And you're making note of the way he shows up in your life. You're noting the God sightings.
- 33:48You're taking to heart his protection, his love, his goodness, his grace, his mercy.
- 33:55Because if you are, then like David, he's going to deliver you out of your problem.
- 34:02And like the Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 15, you can say,
- 34:07but thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 34:13The battle's not yours. It belongs to the Lord. Who's fighting your battle?
- 34:19Are you leading or are you following? Remember, you are loved. Jesus loves you.
