Transcript
- 0:04Welcome back, everybody, to the Daily Ripples podcast with Pastor Mike and Corey.
- 0:08You've got here today again.
- 0:10Today is July the 15th, and our devotional for the day is titled, Letting Go of Pride,
- 0:18the Stone.
- 0:19Pride keeps me stuck, and humility sets me free.
- 0:24Ripple One, practical.
- 0:25Today, I will notice where pride is shaping my reactions.
- 0:29When I feel defensive, entitled, or self-pitying, I will pause and choose a different response.
- 0:35I will not demand more than my share or assume life owes me something.
- 0:40Ripple 2, Spiritual
- 0:42The Father calls me to a life rooted in humility, not self-importance.
- 0:46Jesus shows me that true strength is found in surrender, not in striving for more.
- 0:51The Holy Spirit reveals where pride still lives in me and gives me the grace to release it.
- 0:56As pride loosens its grip, I begin to live with clearer perspective and deeper peace.
- 1:02And as always, we save our prayer for the end of the episode.
- 1:05But the part in the practical ripple quarry today where it says that when I feel defensive, entitled, or self-pitying,
- 1:14you know, I wrote in there, I'll pause and choose a different response.
- 1:17But what I could just as easily write is that when I feel defensive, entitled, or self-pitying,
- 1:23when I get called on at a meeting, I'm just going to be glad to be there.
- 1:27Does that make sense?
- 1:28Because I'm not going to word vomit in a meeting with 20 or 30 other people.
- 1:33And you've talked about this a little bit before.
- 1:35When I'm in the midst of the struggle, I'm just going to go quiet.
- 1:40Normally, if I'm in a meeting, especially in my home group,
- 1:43and I get called on and I just say, glad to be here or what have you,
- 1:47it means I'm remembering what, you know, Papaw Richard taught me 10 years ago,
- 1:53which is that that cotton needs to come out of my ears and go in my mouth that day.
- 1:57And it's because I'm processing or going through something,
- 1:59struggling with something that I could easily kind of word vomit about
- 2:04and get the comfort and assurance in a meeting of,
- 2:07oh, you know, Michael, I hate to hear you're going through that, you know, blah, blah, blah.
- 2:11But all that does, man, is feed my pride and my ego, doesn't it?
- 2:15I mean, even though it's not a positive thing, it's still feeding my pride and my ego.
- 2:19What I'd rather do is what you've shared on here before and talked about is talk about the struggle after I've attained the victory or after I've been granted the victory, you know, by my higher power, I guess would be the more accurate way to say that.
- 2:36And so sometimes letting go of pride for me is, you know, shutting up whenever I feel led to go down that self-pity kind of rabbit hole.
- 2:46That was what really jumped out to me, you know, in this rereading today, you know, first and foremost.
- 2:52But what have you got for us?
- 2:54I think I was looking at pride and I put it in my 1860 definition thing.
- 3:00A higher elevated opinion of one's self or one's own worth.
- 3:06Yeah.
- 3:07So, you know, it says self-esteem or proper dignity.
- 3:13So, you know, but I think, you know, when I think about pride, I think there's the opposite effect.
- 3:19And you were kind of talking about the opposite effect.
- 3:21Yeah, self-pity.
- 3:23Yeah.
- 3:23Right.
- 3:24And, you know, because I think, you know, when it talks about on page 62 in the big book, it says,
- 3:32says, selfishness, self-centeredness, that we think is the root of our troubles.
- 3:37Driven by a hundred forms of fear, self-delusion, self-seeking, and self-pity,
- 3:44we step on the toes of others and they retaliate, seemingly without provocation.
- 3:49And, you know, so when I think about, like, that pride and my ego and all this stuff and self-pity, I can use both in both ways.
- 3:57Because, you know, I get, hey, look at me.
- 4:00We kind of talked about that on the previous episode.
- 4:03But then I could say, self-pity, hey, look at me.
- 4:06Right.
- 4:06And it's still just about me.
- 4:08Trying to bring the focus back to us.
- 4:10Yeah.
- 4:11And, you know, I don't want to talk right this second, like, from a place of having gone through the steps and, like, talking to people in here that haven't gone through the steps, right?
- 4:22But I will tell you that in my experience, I've had a vital spiritual experience.
- 4:28And we were talking a little bit about this, too.
- 4:30So on page 25 of the big book, it says, the great fact is just this and nothing less, that we have had deep and effective spiritual experiences, which have revolutionized our whole attitude, perspective, right?
- 4:47Towards life, towards our fellows and towards God's universe.
- 4:52So when I think about that, man, like my life today, it doesn't look my pride in my ego.
- 4:57Yeah, it gets up there sometimes, and I have to watch that.
- 5:01And, you know, when that happens, right, I ask God to remove it.
- 5:04Usually God has some divine intervention for me anyways to bring me down to, you know, one.
- 5:10Right, right.
- 5:11Yeah, but so usually I'm asking God to remove that feeling, that intervention of what God's doing in my life, you know.
- 5:18Because, you know, usually it's like when everything's just going smooth, man.
- 5:22Everything could just be going smooth.
- 5:24And then I'll have this, this, this, this, and this.
- 5:26And it's like, oh, wow.
- 5:29Like, who'd you think you were anyways?
- 5:30Yeah, that's a good place to be too.
- 5:32Because I'm more useful there.
- 5:35I'm more useful when I remember, hey, Corey, you remember what you were thinking about a couple of years ago?
- 5:41You remember where you were at a couple of years ago?
- 5:44And that makes me more useful to God's kids anyways, to stay more in that position.
- 5:48I think, man, you know, if I want to do any maybe humbling of myself, I need to go do stuff that is the most uncomfortable stuff in the world and go face some things.
- 6:02Right.
- 6:02I don't think I can sit on my couch or sit with you.
- 6:06Well, you know, I think going through the work, right, because that, you know, I would think going through this work, you know, is it has some ego deflation in it.
- 6:16Especially, you know, when I tell someone my whole life story and go make some amends or go through that process that nobody wants to go through.
- 6:24But I don't know.
- 6:25I was just thinking about some of that.
- 6:29I was just looking up here, you know, out of the Bible, looking up a passage that was, you know, addressing, you know, kind of how we can let go of pride, right?
- 6:46So one of the best examples of, you know, pride versus humility, you know, that we have
- 6:51through in the Bible and the teachings of Jesus, you know, comes from the gospel of Luke,
- 6:55the 18th chapter, you know, starting in verse 9. It says, you know, also he spoke this parable to
- 7:01some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others. He said, two men
- 7:06went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and
- 7:11prayed thus with himself, God, I thank you that I'm not like other men, extortioners, unjust,
- 7:18adulterers, alcoholics, oh wait, it doesn't say that, but anyway, or even as this tax collector,
- 7:22I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I possess, and the tax collector, standing far off,
- 7:29would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me,
- 7:34a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other,
- 7:39For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
- 7:45And, you know, that passage, you know, it's a pretty famous one of the parables of Jesus,
- 7:50you know, but it's driving the point home of when I'm trying to make it all about me, me, me,
- 7:57then I'm going to be brought low by something, you know, in life.
- 8:01And when I operate out of a place of true service and humility,
- 8:05then I actually have something to offer you in the kingdom of heaven.
- 8:10i'll use an example because i've talked to him about it before and i don't think that he would
- 8:14mind that he's been on here before there is a guy who it's not his uh government name you might say
- 8:21but he goes by the name of the city that we live in right and uh when he first came into the program
- 8:29when he entered a room he wanted everyone to know it right he was almost kind of like the pharisee
- 8:36of AA, you might say. He wanted people to know that he was there, that when he was shared,
- 8:44there was a tone and a manner in his sharing that was just full of pride and ego. Then he faced a
- 8:52period of uncertainty in his life, and he had a period of time where he had to realize what really
- 8:57mattered in his life. And it was not being seen, being heard, but it was the relationships that he
- 9:04had, you know, and the love that he had for others. And his going through that completely changed.
- 9:10And he also, you know, I know from him sharing with me, he did some work, had a lot of serious
- 9:16talks with God during that time too. And really his faith developed and deepened. And today,
- 9:25when he shares in a meeting, he does so out of a, even his tone when he's sharing, he's quieter.
- 9:31And he does so out of a place of humility.
- 9:34And I don't say that to give him any pride if he's listening to this today.
- 9:38But I say that as an example of that's not something that he did.
- 9:43That's something that God did.
- 9:44That's the work that God does in us as we work these steps and as we're faithful.
- 9:49And in the life of faith, for any Christians that are listening who are not alcoholics or addicts,
- 9:56God does the same in all of our lives.
- 9:57To the extent that we are willing to go where God wants us to go and to follow him, he works out the rest.
- 10:06It's that sanctifying grace that I mentioned the other day.
- 10:10To use your words, it's all God.
- 10:12Right.
- 10:16Well, we're talking about these defects.
- 10:21You can go into the 12 and 12 and it'll list out the seven deadlies.
- 10:26Right?
- 10:26Yeah.
- 10:27And, yeah, I was talking a little bit about this before, but, man, my old sponsor, Doug, the way he would go through the steps is take you on the fourth column through the seven deadlies.
- 10:38How did my pride help me to get this from there?
- 10:41Right.
- 10:41And, like, he would take you through that in that way, and, like, you know, it wasn't out of the big part of the fourth step inventory.
- 10:46Yeah, but it was kind of a mix between the big book and the 12 and 12.
- 10:50Right.
- 10:50And, man, I've played around with these things for a long time.
- 10:56I've done the seven heavenly virtues.
- 10:58I was like, if I practice the seven heavenly virtues, then I'll offset it.
- 11:04Yeah.
- 11:04Because I can manage this, right?
- 11:06Just like my speaking.
- 11:08That's trying to give you the power.
- 11:09Right.
- 11:10Right.
- 11:10Because, you know, I've tried this and, you know, I hear it all the time.
- 11:13I'm working on this.
- 11:15Well, how am I going to work on this?
- 11:16What am I going to do?
- 11:18You know, the one thing is God, right?
- 11:19And in the 12 and 12 on step seven, in the first words, it says, it says, this is the step that separates the men from the boys.
- 11:30And in the, in the big book, it says, if we still cling to something, we will not let go.
- 11:37We ask God to help us be willed.
- 11:39Willingness is always the key, right?
- 11:41Yeah.
- 11:41Well, we kind of talked a little bit about this, but what comes before willingness?
- 11:46Well, hope, like helpless.
- 11:49You know, that's what, that's what, but you know, this is the men and the boys.
- 11:52This is the difference.
- 11:53So when I look at the step seven prayer, it says my creator.
- 11:59And we talked a little bit about this.
- 12:00And I think you were in the big book study when we talked, when someone talked about it,
- 12:04but it's cool that right here.
- 12:06Yeah, it was.
- 12:07Yeah.
- 12:08Like my creator.
- 12:10Well, cause we're recreating our lives and it kind of talks about that a little bit earlier.
- 12:14The big book.
- 12:15And it also makes it very personal.
- 12:17My.
- 12:18Not eternal creator, not everybody's creator.
- 12:20Sky-ad-eater.
- 12:22Yeah.
- 12:23Makes it very personal.
- 12:25I'm not willing that you should have all of me, good and bad.
- 12:28You've heard me say this a lot, but, you know, because I don't know what's good and bad because my greatest defect, me drinking, me hurting people, today has become my greatest asset to help another person.
- 12:40Do you know why that is?
- 12:42Well, I mean, I'm going to go with God's everything.
- 12:44Well, and it's also because the Bible says, the Apostle Paul tells us that all things work together for the good of those who love the Lord, who are called according to his purpose.
- 12:53So all things work together.
- 12:55Not that all things are good, but they work together for the good.
- 12:58Everything in your life has brought you here.
- 13:00Right.
- 13:01So yeah, there's another verse too that kind of, anyways.
- 13:06Good and bad, I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character
- 13:11which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows.
- 13:15That's like so good and bad.
- 13:18I don't know what's good.
- 13:19I don't know what's bad.
- 13:20Take all these defects of character so I can be more of use to you.
- 13:25But that's not saying I know which ones they are.
- 13:28And that's not me, you know, picking which ones.
- 13:31Man, I used to know a dude in the rooms, man.
- 13:34And, um, anyways, man, the way he would, just like you were talking about our buddy, the
- 13:41way he would talk, he talks with such humility, humbly, whatever that is.
- 13:46And man, I started to soften my voice up.
- 13:51You wanted to be like him.
- 13:52Yeah.
- 13:52But you know, I, you know, that wasn't in a place of humility.
- 13:55That was me trying to act humble.
- 13:57Sure.
- 13:57You know, you've heard me talk about this on before.
- 13:59I was trying to make my imaginary character who I want to, and God's supposed to do that work.
- 14:05And I could spend all my life working on these character defects forever and focus on me.
- 14:12But it doesn't say that because on page 77, during the, you know, and I believe from,
- 14:17if you want to be a man and like the separation of men and boys is in this program from 76 to 103.
- 14:26Because that means I'm going to make amends.
- 14:28I'm going to do this morning thing.
- 14:30I'm going to do this.
- 14:30I'm going to go help others.
- 14:32And it's not going to be about me anymore.
- 14:34Because my whole life's been about me, Pastor.
- 14:36Right?
- 14:36And I've exhausted that all the way into jails.
- 14:40You saw where that was going to take me.
- 14:42Right.
- 14:42Yeah.
- 14:42So, like, you know, changing my attitude to take it away against from me, put it to my family, to put it to those people out there.
- 14:51Man, this dude you had talked to a couple weeks ago on here, man.
- 14:56it was cool he sent me a text message um and he you know he i'd send i'd let him go to one of the
- 15:04treatment i didn't let him go i didn't have time to go to the treatment center that another thing
- 15:10to do and he went up there man i said how'd you do man he was like man i don't know if i can do it
- 15:14by myself he sent me a text message today it was like hey man i recant my statement i'd be happy to
- 15:21go up there by myself if that's cool and i thought it was the coolest deal yeah and because man like
- 15:26you know that stuff right there it was it was this thing that god led me to do yeah god it was nobody
- 15:34like you know you talked about it a little bit earlier you know you were just doing what people
- 15:38told you to do yeah especially early on yeah but like that dude i know his sponsor and i know that
- 15:46that dude, you know, I don't think, I'm pretty much sure that that didn't have, he didn't have
- 15:51anything to do with that either. That was him. And that means it was God, you know, in an unselfish
- 15:56way, he's going out wanting to do these things. And that's the drive. And, you know, I, man,
- 16:02if you're, that's not going to be the drive, man. I, uh, I found every which way that that doesn't
- 16:10work in my life and it puts me back out there in the bottle and i uh i don't know what we're here
- 16:16for but i know on the next page over in this book in the 12 and 12 it says
- 16:26having been granted the perfect release from alcoholism and that's what i came in here for
- 16:32the perfect release from alcohol why then should we be able to achieve by the same means a perfect
- 16:39release from every other difficulty or defect. And so like, what's the means? It's not me. It
- 16:46was God. God removed it. I didn't do it. So I think that was a, anyways. Well, it takes me back
- 16:52to the spiritual, uh, ripple today where it says the Holy Spirit reveals where pride still lives in
- 16:58me and gives me the grace to release it. And sometimes the grace that I get to release that
- 17:03pride is simply the gift of time.
- 17:06You know, time that goes by, time that creates more distance between when I thought I was
- 17:13self-important and when I am now.
- 17:14And also, you know, the Holy Spirit reveals sometimes where pride still lives in me.
- 17:18Sometimes the Holy Spirit reveals that through other people, you know, and one of those for
- 17:22me, one of the biggest ones, and I'm lucky and blessed enough that, you know, the love
- 17:27of my life, you know, my wife, who I call Baby Lou, and her real name is Christy, of course,
- 17:32that she'll point out if I'm being prideful, but she does it in a way that I can accept,
- 17:38you know what I mean? And that is in a way that I don't have a negative reaction to,
- 17:43a prideful reaction to, you might say. She does it in a way that I don't have to feel defensive,
- 17:48entitled, or self-pitying, you know, as it said in the practical today. And the other aspect of
- 17:55that is the revelation of where I need to slow down and where I need more growth. A lot of
- 18:02of times that's where the meditation comes into play you know i pray but then am i spending time
- 18:07in quiet listening for what god would reveal to me in my life today i've been uh i've been really
- 18:14practicing i've i kind of let it go for a little while but my nightly meditation like you know so
- 18:22and what that looks like you know because i you know i think people in the rooms don't even
- 18:26understand i mean what it what that looks like to me right and you know because you know they say
- 18:31meditation well they got apps for that they got this yeah you know mindfulness techniques and all
- 18:36i think it's all important though i i've used some of them and i you know man when i i think i probably
- 18:41said it on here but it doesn't matter prayer and meditation is two separate entities and you know
- 18:48you use it to more the quiet and i use it in that direction too but i had to learn how to get quiet
- 18:54yeah and that's a practice that's a practice and discipline because how many people i've heard that's
- 18:59come into these anonymous rooms and say, man, I can't sit, I can't do that. Well, I couldn't do
- 19:05it either. It took practice and it really took a fifth step of me doing some of that stuff too.
- 19:10But for me to, cause it also at the end of the fifth step, it says sitting in your,
- 19:14you know, take the book off your shelf, read these sitting alone for an hour. That's to say
- 19:19you can sit alone for an hour. That's the, that's the measure right there. And so, um,
- 19:26But what it looks like for me today is I'll get my baby to sleep.
- 19:31I'll get the baby to bed.
- 19:32Sleep, really, because she's still in our bed.
- 19:35But anyways, I'll get her to sleep.
- 19:39I get up and I kind of go get something to read.
- 19:42I read like a pair.
- 19:43I've probably already been reading because I try to read when she goes to sleep.
- 19:48And I get on my knees and, man, I put a timer on my phone for 15 minutes.
- 19:53And I open that prayer.
- 19:54I open my prayer.
- 19:54What I do today is I open the prayer up with the third step prayer because there's no amen
- 19:59at the end and that's important.
- 20:00So I've opened up this.
- 20:02You don't have an ending in sight.
- 20:03There's no ending.
- 20:04Yeah.
- 20:04So I open that up and I get quiet and I start breathing.
- 20:08I breathe in.
- 20:09I love you.
- 20:11I breathe out.
- 20:11I love you.
- 20:12My thoughts will race and I'll get out of the I love you and I'll let them go.
- 20:16I don't beat myself up because I think I'm thinking about penguins and I'm thinking about
- 20:20a roller coaster and I'm thinking about work all at the same time.
- 20:23I just come back into it.
- 20:25And then I end it with the seven step prayer.
- 20:27And did you know that that's called a breath prayer?
- 20:30Yeah.
- 20:31Yeah, because that's one of the things that they taught us and that we learned in seminary.
- 20:35And we had a course called Formation for Ministry, where we talked about the various forms of prayer.
- 20:39And that breath prayer was very effective.
- 20:42I find so much.
- 20:43Like, when I opened my eyes, man, when I spoke at this last birthday, the one I just did the other.
- 20:53There's a cemetery down the street from where that meeting is.
- 20:57Yes.
- 20:58And so, man, before I talk, especially in front of all those people, man,
- 21:03I probably have like eight or ten talks before the car by myself.
- 21:06Yeah.
- 21:06Well, you know, not that day, but you know, days previous.
- 21:10And, man, I went to that cemetery and, you know, meditated for some time.
- 21:13And, man, I've never felt more clear.
- 21:17So, you know, I encourage people, you know, like, when I put in the prayer and meditation, I put those practices and disciplines every day of my life.
- 21:29Man, like, I can't tell you how, because it's like, almost like me telling you, like, this is the result of it, but I'm not doing it for a result.
- 21:37I'm doing it for the conscious contact with God.
- 21:39Yeah.
- 21:39But the peace and the love and the, you know, I don't know.
- 21:43It's something that's indescribable.
- 21:45Yeah.
- 21:46What I was thinking about is that if I am to trust and rely upon God, then I need to have a good relationship with God.
- 21:56And having a good relationship with God is the same way that I need to have a good relationship with you.
- 22:02And it's not just me talking all the time.
- 22:04And that's why I focus so much on listening.
- 22:06Because I think so many times we, especially in the church, you know, Jesus followers, spend so much time focused on prayer.
- 22:12and a lot of times the prayers are the self-focused or self-directed prayers,
- 22:18but that's only one side of that relationship.
- 22:21You know, if I'm only ever talking at God,
- 22:23but I don't ever shut up and listen to what God has to say to me,
- 22:26you know, if you and I got together here
- 22:29and you had to sit there and listen to me for 15 minutes every episode
- 22:32and you were just kind of there and you barely got time to get a word in edgewise,
- 22:36that wouldn't be very fulfilling for you now, would it?
- 22:38And it wouldn't really be that much of a relationship.
- 22:41Well, it's the same way, you know, with God, you know, I've got to, to, to form and develop a good relationship as I have to develop that, those spiritual ears to hear what God has to say to me and for my life.
- 22:52Well, we talk about this in this literature and talks about the great reality deep down with them.
- 22:59Right.
- 23:00But if I have all, you know, this is just the way I look at this whole deal.
- 23:04But if I have all this stuff blocking me from that, I believe I can get quite all I want past my life.
- 23:13And man, I'm not going to get that.
- 23:15I'm not going to be able to feel that great reality deep down within.
- 23:18I'm not going to be able to feel that conscious presence of God.
- 23:21Maybe I can for a little glimpses.
- 23:23But I like a lot.
- 23:25Yeah.
- 23:26Well, it starts little by slow.
- 23:28Because it's just like the promises of the AA program.
- 23:30You don't experience all those on day one.
- 23:32You experience them as you work at it.
- 23:34Yeah, as you block it.
- 23:36Yeah, exactly.
- 23:37So it all works together.
- 23:39And I think that's the most important piece of it.
- 23:42The things which in my life have been blocking me.
- 23:44And I will tell you, I didn't get that from the fourth step.
- 23:50Yeah.
- 23:50I got it from going and making things right, loving God's kids, and being a part of this world.
- 23:57Were you amazed before you were halfway through?
- 24:00Yeah, that's why I went out the last time.
- 24:03On that note, our prayer for today,
- 24:06Father God, show me where pride is still at work in me.
- 24:09Through your Holy Spirit, help me release it and walk in humility.
- 24:13Shape my heart through the example of Jesus
- 24:16and lead me into a life grounded in truth and peace.
- 24:20Amen.
- 24:20Amen.
- 24:23All right, Corey, you got me guilty of the infamous 25-minute episode.
- 24:27I was that way there again.
- 24:28Yeah, we did a long one, man.
- 24:30You're a bad influence.
- 24:32That was a good one, though.
- 24:32We're a good influence, whichever the case may be.
