Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's up, everybody, It's Jeff Mosher,
- 0:15Speaker 1: It's Adam Kaplan, and we finish out our free agency
- 0:19Speaker 1: primer across the NFL with safeties. As we really spent
- 0:24Speaker 1: the last two pods, last one in this one talking
- 0:26Speaker 1: about defensive backs. Now, Adam, when we talked about the corners,
- 0:30Speaker 1: it was kind of an EH group, and safeties it
- 0:33Speaker 1: does feel like top heavy. Is that there's a couple
- 0:36Speaker 1: of guys who have done some good things in this league,
- 0:40Speaker 1: and then it.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Sort of fizzles out pretty quickly after that.
- 0:43Speaker 3: It's actually pretty deep.
- 0:44Speaker 4: But half of the list you could see why the
- 0:46Speaker 4: guys are out there, right, guys have done some things
- 0:50Speaker 4: but not quite good enough. And then you look at
- 0:52Speaker 4: a guy like your Kwon Prisker, who's a good football player,
- 0:56Speaker 4: not a big time playmaker, just a good player, good tackler.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Two years ago he had a significant cushion problem, right,
- 1:03Speaker 4: and that's gonna be concerned. Andre Cisco is not. You know,
- 1:05Speaker 4: he put up a ton of big plays in college.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Nice player, nothing great blanket ship of course. Kevin Byron,
- 1:16Speaker 4: who had a great bounce back here Holy Smokes, did
- 1:18Speaker 4: have a great year, but he's an older player, leader type.
- 1:21Speaker 4: You like having him. But I mean you're right to
- 1:25Speaker 4: a degree. It is top heavy, but there's much better
- 1:28Speaker 4: depth here. It is a much deeper position than corner.
- 1:31Speaker 1: For free agency, Yeah, I mean a lot of teams
- 1:32Speaker 1: are playing more sub packages, Big Nickel using three safeties.
- 1:36Speaker 1: The Bears that it was CJ. Gardner Johnson and they
- 1:39Speaker 1: had some success with that. And so you kind of
- 1:42Speaker 1: can look down this list and see some guys who
- 1:44Speaker 1: have played in that kind of like Cam Croll right,
- 1:47Speaker 1: he just come.
- 1:48Speaker 2: He's spent two years with the Rams. The Rams do
- 1:50Speaker 2: a lot on the back end.
- 1:51Speaker 1: They play a lot of different guys, So I feel
- 1:53Speaker 1: like there's guys who can help you do things. They
- 1:56Speaker 1: can help you match up against certain offensive looks, even
- 1:59Speaker 1: if they're not starters for you, even if they're playing
- 2:02Speaker 1: thirty to forty percent of the game in some type
- 2:04Speaker 1: of subpackage. But also, if you're that kind of guy,
- 2:07Speaker 1: you're you're usually not commanding a big, big, long, long
- 2:12Speaker 1: term deal for a lot of money.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Yeah, there's some guys here like Jalen Hawkins, a really
- 2:17Speaker 4: nice mid level free agent who really played well for
- 2:20Speaker 4: New England. He also played for the Falcons early in
- 2:22Speaker 4: his career. There are a bunch of journeym in here.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Then they're guys like Donovan Wilson, a solid starting safety CJ.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Garter.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Johnson is a playmaker we know about We know he
- 2:34Speaker 4: moves on a lot. Teams get sick of him.
- 2:36Speaker 3: He moves on it.
- 2:37Speaker 4: But he's a good football player, Cisco. The problem is
- 2:39Speaker 4: he mistake game nine games with the Jets last season.
- 2:41Speaker 4: That won't help him. Nick Cross is a good football player. Yeah,
- 2:46Speaker 4: he's one of the best safeties out there. He plays
- 2:49Speaker 4: for the Colts. I'll be interested to see what Chris
- 2:52Speaker 4: Ballard does, because Ballard is they got to win. They
- 2:55Speaker 4: got a problem a quarterback with Daniel Jones coming back
- 2:58Speaker 4: from his torn achille. It crosses a good story of
- 3:02Speaker 4: development for them. Started every game the last two seasons
- 3:05Speaker 4: for them.
- 3:07Speaker 3: It's just a solid football player. I know.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Greg os Hells told us he really likes his tape. Yeah,
- 3:11Speaker 4: gotta look if your team needs a safety, that's a
- 3:14Speaker 4: guy to look at.
- 3:15Speaker 1: If he's a little a little puzzled, maybe you have
- 3:18Speaker 1: the answer to this odd You know what delay the
- 3:21Speaker 1: Colts had.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Do you even want to try to lock him up?
- 3:24Speaker 2: To a long return.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Well, you always remember they don't Most teams don't do
- 3:27Speaker 4: what Eagles do.
- 3:28Speaker 3: You typically do not. They don't wait.
- 3:30Speaker 4: They if they see it early, the guy's gonna they're
- 3:33Speaker 4: gonna try. After three years, almost all of them do.
- 3:36Speaker 4: The guys that they target on their list. Eagles have
- 3:40Speaker 4: a high percentage of getting these guys resigned. I mean
- 3:42Speaker 4: they try for melt Williams for a little bit. Yeah,
- 3:45Speaker 4: but his his people thought they could get way more
- 3:48Speaker 4: money and the Eagles were out very quickly. Yeah, it happens,
- 3:51Speaker 4: can't it's noways said, you can't resign everyone.
- 3:54Speaker 1: You just can't, right, and then they might that pinch
- 3:57Speaker 1: with with Reid Blankenship, who's another freezon.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Right right right exactly?
- 4:01Speaker 4: So looking at the list here as I go down here,
- 4:06Speaker 4: Kobe Bryant with a C Kobe with the Seahawks. It
- 4:10Speaker 4: started a bunch of games. Brian Cook, who started fully
- 4:15Speaker 4: the last two seasons for the Chiefs, not a bad
- 4:16Speaker 4: football player. And then there's a guy like Andrew Wingard
- 4:19Speaker 4: who's been with Jacksonville a long time. I don't say much, belind,
- 4:25Speaker 4: I just know that the fans get on him on
- 4:27Speaker 4: social media over the years. He's got the long hair.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Guy's been in the league a long time man, he's been.
- 4:34Speaker 4: He started all but one game last season, then was
- 4:36Speaker 4: a backup. Twenty one he was a full time starter.
- 4:40Speaker 4: He's more of a backup at this point of his
- 4:41Speaker 4: career as he gets closer to thirty. Nick Scott's a
- 4:44Speaker 4: journeyman who played a lot for the Panthers. Ashton Davis
- 4:47Speaker 4: was overdrafted by the Jestsey's an athlete, Okay, football player
- 4:52Speaker 4: like he's. He might get paid a little because he's
- 4:55Speaker 4: got some versatility.
- 4:57Speaker 3: You know.
- 4:57Speaker 4: It was a guy for the Eagles this p I
- 5:00Speaker 4: have to look this up. I believe he might have
- 5:02Speaker 4: played for Fangio in Denver.
- 5:04Speaker 3: I'll look this up.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Oh, that's that would be interesting.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, pg lock, let me look at him. His
- 5:08Speaker 3: name has come up to me over the years. Yeah
- 5:12Speaker 3: he did. He did play for vic You sure, Yeah.
- 5:16Speaker 2: That's interesting.
- 5:17Speaker 1: You the Eagles have done well with bringing guys with knowledge.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Of the system, you know, bringing them in.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Yeah, but just just it's they have a major problem
- 5:28Speaker 4: in how it's safety. If Reblack of Chip leaves, you
- 5:31Speaker 4: got Macouba, you got Cidney Brown, who's the only special
- 5:36Speaker 4: teams players. Contract is up there. Andre sam is a
- 5:41Speaker 4: nice for safety if he makes your team mixed. The Eagles,
- 5:47Speaker 4: look they have a safety issue. They have a depth
- 5:49Speaker 4: issue right now. Matt mcmickwams was not crosstrating. Now, Michael Carter,
- 5:53Speaker 4: if they keep from obviously he's not making ten million off,
- 5:56Speaker 4: you have to take a shave. But remember we we
- 5:58Speaker 4: we noted this at the time that trade and then
- 6:00Speaker 4: how he confirmed it to the reporters that they were
- 6:02Speaker 4: going to cross shame at safety. I have to look
- 6:05Speaker 4: this up. I believe Joe Casper might have been with
- 6:07Speaker 4: him at Duke.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I think you're right about that. I think we talked
- 6:12Speaker 2: about that. Yeah, okay, so yeah he did play safety, correct,
- 6:17Speaker 2: Yeah he did.
- 6:18Speaker 3: He was a safety.
- 6:19Speaker 4: And then I give I give Joe Douglas credit and
- 6:21Speaker 4: whoever Rex Hogan who was also the personnel director. They
- 6:25Speaker 4: made a smart move movement of safety. And look, he
- 6:28Speaker 4: got a contract with the Jets. He got extended because
- 6:30Speaker 4: he was a good young safety, one of the better
- 6:31Speaker 4: young safeties in the league. Sometimes it happens to you
- 6:34Speaker 4: extend the guy the next year he just falls off.
- 6:36Speaker 4: They wanted getting benched.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Yeah, Vick liked him enough to play him in the dime,
- 6:43Speaker 1: you know, he might play that.
- 6:44Speaker 3: A little bit.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you kind of wonder. You look at the list.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I mean, Michael Carter's still young if it makes sense
- 6:50Speaker 1: to after they obviously part ways with the contract so
- 6:53Speaker 1: they don't have to own all that money. If you
- 6:55Speaker 1: bring him back as a safety instead of trying to
- 6:58Speaker 1: take your chance with some on this list, I mean.
- 7:01Speaker 3: He could be a backup Nickel and he could be
- 7:03Speaker 3: a safety. So yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:06Speaker 4: His cash number is ten point two five million, which
- 7:09Speaker 4: absolutely will not be acceptable you know, no, yeah, I
- 7:14Speaker 4: mean any of that at the time of the trade.
- 7:15Speaker 4: So we'll we'll see, we'll see what happens there with
- 7:19Speaker 4: Michael Carter. But you know, if he goes looking at safe,
- 7:21Speaker 4: cap space out and cash, well, the cash numbers are
- 7:24Speaker 4: unacceptable and the cap number two because they're almost almost
- 7:27Speaker 4: exactly the same there. So Apps, as I mentioned, is
- 7:30Speaker 4: out there. Tony Adams, he used to be a starting
- 7:32Speaker 4: safety or in his career. He's with the Jets, well traveled.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Xavier Woods was cut by the Titans. Durdan Poyer, who's
- 7:39Speaker 4: got to be close to the end of his career.
- 7:42Speaker 4: And then Dan Bell, who's played a lot.
- 7:43Speaker 3: He's not bad.
- 7:44Speaker 4: He's like a third safety, not a bad safety. Played
- 7:46Speaker 4: for the Giants. It played a lot of snaps last
- 7:48Speaker 4: season due to other injuries. Kim Curl we mentioned earlier.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Good player, it's not a playmaker.
- 7:53Speaker 3: It's actually good. It's actually a good sounid list.
- 7:55Speaker 4: But as you said earlier, if you're looking for a stud,
- 7:58Speaker 4: you're not getting one, right.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Like, I know, we've done some of these shows and
- 8:02Speaker 1: gotten to the last part of the position and did
- 8:07Speaker 1: kind of a collective yuck.
- 8:08Speaker 2: I don't see that.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I mean, I see guys who can hold their own
- 8:11Speaker 1: in the NFL here and if again, if you put
- 8:14Speaker 1: him in a good environment around them, they can probably
- 8:16Speaker 1: do fairly well.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:18Speaker 4: One of my favorite all time names, Alohi Gilman is
- 8:21Speaker 4: actually a good player. Formerly the Chargers, was involved in
- 8:23Speaker 4: the adjacent adopfi ol Way trade.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Yep.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Former he played well for them too. The Ravens, Yeah, yeah,
- 8:31Speaker 3: he did. Now he's a good player.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Geno Stone, formerly the Ravens and the Bengals, sign a
- 8:34Speaker 4: free agency with the Bengals some years ago.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Yep.
- 8:38Speaker 4: I remember people have thought the Eagles were not.
- 8:40Speaker 3: On him at the time. They didn't. They showed no
- 8:42Speaker 3: interest in him.
- 8:43Speaker 4: For people wondering, because sometimes what happens is and like
- 8:47Speaker 4: all teams do, there's a guy like sometimes that they
- 8:52Speaker 4: missed out on in free agency. Then later in the
- 8:55Speaker 4: square they take a look at him. But get Stone
- 8:57Speaker 4: was not on the list we report at the time.
- 9:00Speaker 4: But yeah, Phillies, And see the thing is, there's so
- 9:04Speaker 4: it's a buyer's market of safety. There's so many of them,
- 9:07Speaker 4: a lot of mid level. Yes, there's some guys who
- 9:09Speaker 4: are better than average to good. There are no lead
- 9:12Speaker 4: safeties available. Cisco was so highly touted because he had
- 9:17Speaker 4: a ton of picks at Syracuse. He has it's been
- 9:19Speaker 4: the playmaker with a lot of In fact, I remember
- 9:21Speaker 4: talking to Dave Campo, the former Cowboys defense coordinator head coach,
- 9:26Speaker 4: because he think he lives in Jacksonville. Okay, I saw
- 9:29Speaker 4: him at camp one year and I just remember him
- 9:31Speaker 4: telling me because he knew his career, like I guess
- 9:33Speaker 4: he falls college football because he goes this guy's got
- 9:36Speaker 4: to be the playmaker and they thought they were getting
- 9:38Speaker 4: and he just never became that with Jacksonville.
- 9:40Speaker 2: I remember he had an interception against the Eagles. Was
- 9:45Speaker 2: it like three years.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Ago when they played that game in the rain against Jacksonville?
- 9:49Speaker 3: Oh?
- 9:49Speaker 4: Yeah, that game that that was the Trevor Lawrence Lawrence
- 9:53Speaker 4: did he turnover fumble at four times or something?
- 9:55Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, the Eagles had some turnover issues that day
- 9:58Speaker 2: as well. I remember Cisco had an I'm almost positive
- 10:00Speaker 2: he had and uh.
- 10:01Speaker 4: What I mean five years he's had eight picks. Yeah,
- 10:05Speaker 4: but those are individual plays. Always have to warn people, right,
- 10:08Speaker 4: it's there are other big plays that you make.
- 10:10Speaker 3: You know.
- 10:11Speaker 4: He not much of a blitzer. He's a fine football player,
- 10:14Speaker 4: but he I have to look up his college rummers.
- 10:16Speaker 4: I just remember, like what, uh Dave Campa pointed out
- 10:19Speaker 4: to me how good he was in college with big plays.
- 10:21Speaker 4: I'm like, okay, wow, yep.
- 10:24Speaker 1: By the way, he returned that one against Eagles for
- 10:26Speaker 1: a touchdown fifty nine yards?
- 10:28Speaker 3: Oh wow, okay, okay twenty two.
- 10:30Speaker 2: So yeah, it was a couple of years ago. I
- 10:31Speaker 2: remember the game.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't know from Queens.
- 10:37Speaker 2: How about that?
- 10:37Speaker 1: How about that?
- 10:38Speaker 3: All right?
- 10:40Speaker 2: Isn't it crazy to see? I still remember when.
- 10:43Speaker 1: This guy was drafted at the bottom of the first
- 10:45Speaker 1: first round. H Harrison Smith and I think he was
- 10:49Speaker 1: drafted in twenty twelve.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Yeah, went up on free age.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I mean, he spent his entire career with the Vikings.
- 10:54Speaker 2: It's crazy he.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Did it is crazy boy. The Eagles burned him in
- 10:58Speaker 3: the seventeen championship game. Sure did by Cisco. His first
- 11:03Speaker 3: is Wow, now I get it. Cisco had twelve picks.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Oh my lord.
- 11:09Speaker 4: It is first two years at Syracuse. That's a lot
- 11:12Speaker 4: for over two years and apparently like he was great
- 11:15Speaker 4: at diagnosing but in it Jackson didn't bring him back.
- 11:20Speaker 3: But Harrison Smith. Yeah, I mean he's gonna be a
- 11:22Speaker 3: Hall of Famer. Yeah.
- 11:23Speaker 4: You know Tony Jefferson, the well traveled Tony Jefferson was
- 11:26Speaker 4: a real stud early in his career. He's near the
- 11:27Speaker 4: NS I mentioned Ployer. So again, it's a it's a
- 11:30Speaker 4: pretty deep list. No studs, but some good football players.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Hey, I know a lot of you out there are
- 11:35Speaker 1: just like me. You either travel a lot for work
- 11:37Speaker 1: or you got a back to work policy and you're
- 11:40Speaker 1: always out of the house, but your family is still home. Well,
- 11:44Speaker 1: I feel really secure with my family at home because
- 11:47Speaker 1: I've got simply safe home alarm system traditional security systems.

- 13:39Speaker 1: Only twenty five man, he can Yeah, if you're not
- 13:42Speaker 1: paying him to get you eight interceptions, you know, a
- 13:45Speaker 1: year eight or ten, he can probably still play and
- 13:47Speaker 1: be a good starter in this league.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:50Speaker 4: So again, it's like Donovan Wilson, I solid football player, wron.
- 13:57Speaker 4: I'll be interested to see what the Bears do because
- 13:59Speaker 4: they're top free safeties run So it's kind of weird. Yeah,
- 14:03Speaker 4: would they have interest because Gardner Johnson had to say
- 14:05Speaker 4: whatever you want about his versatilities is great, right, Remember
- 14:09Speaker 4: remember the first couple of games he put up massive
- 14:11Speaker 4: numbers for the Bears, y sacks and a huge first game.
- 14:15Speaker 2: I remember, yeah, absolutely because I fought.
- 14:16Speaker 1: You know, he's a Penn State guy, so I remember
- 14:18Speaker 1: watching thinking he was going to be a big, big star.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. So look, it's very interesting list.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean you're making a good point. The Bears
- 14:28Speaker 1: has had a really good season to make the playoffs.
- 14:30Speaker 1: They win a huge playoff game, come back against the Packers.
- 14:33Speaker 1: You know, the loss of the Rams was a very
- 14:35Speaker 1: close game. They usually could have won it. And you
- 14:37Speaker 1: look at their secondary, which is always a good part
- 14:40Speaker 1: of their defense. Right, all three safeties free agents.
- 14:43Speaker 2: I think we mentioned in.
- 14:44Speaker 1: The Cornerback podcast, Na Shaan Wright is going to be
- 14:47Speaker 1: a free agent.
- 14:47Speaker 2: I mean, who are they bringing back? I mean they
- 14:49Speaker 2: got to have bodies there.
- 14:50Speaker 4: It's a lot to the other problem is their pass
- 14:53Speaker 4: rush is awful, Oh terrible.
- 14:56Speaker 3: They have they got to get maxed.
- 14:59Speaker 4: What they got to make decision Dio Danngbo that the
- 15:02Speaker 4: edge who came up from the Colts. He suffered achilles
- 15:05Speaker 4: inturry last season and and that was his first year
- 15:09Speaker 4: of a three year deal. But man, their past rush
- 15:12Speaker 4: is awful. They have to, like if they moved all
- 15:16Speaker 4: that cash. They moved the cash almost twenty four million
- 15:20Speaker 4: for this season in the DT war trade. Yeah, they
- 15:23Speaker 4: got to use that cash that they're not they're not spending,
- 15:26Speaker 4: and they got to get an edge and they got
- 15:27Speaker 4: to get a big one.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Listen, that's the team, Adam that I you know, I
- 15:30Speaker 1: think it wrote about this on Philly Voice. It did
- 15:32Speaker 1: a little bit of a fun like prediction of where
- 15:35Speaker 1: the Eagles free agents would go if they don't re
- 15:37Speaker 1: sign with the Eagles, And I believe I had I
- 15:40Speaker 1: had the Bears and and Jill and Phillips as a
- 15:43Speaker 1: marriage there, because it just makes.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Oh boy, you know what they have to Ryan Pouls
- 15:48Speaker 4: has been willing to be aggressive.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Yep, he knows it. You know that that's a position
- 15:52Speaker 3: they've got to get done, no doubt.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, all right. That is a pretty good
- 15:58Speaker 2: look at the safeties here.
- 16:00Speaker 1: You know that Kim Croll I just find him interesting,
- 16:03Speaker 1: you know, just because he used to play for the
- 16:05Speaker 1: Commanders and we knew how much of a glue guy
- 16:08Speaker 1: he was when he was with Washington.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Then he went out to LA and had two years there.
- 16:13Speaker 2: You know, just Okay, I mean he was.
- 16:14Speaker 1: He's just one of those kind of veterans I think
- 16:16Speaker 1: I can that can help you if you're just not
- 16:18Speaker 1: asking him to do too much.
- 16:19Speaker 3: So yeah, it's fine.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Yeah, interesting list. All right, that's gonna do that. I
- 16:24Speaker 2: think we're done.
- 16:24Speaker 1: We've we've done everything agency and I think the big
- 16:28Speaker 1: summary is it's not a great free agent class.
- 16:31Speaker 4: It's not over now, so should we make we must?
- 16:34Speaker 4: Well say Greg co Sell's coming back, of course for
- 16:36Speaker 4: yet another year with us.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Good point. We know when we're gonna start our shows
- 16:39Speaker 3: with Greg.
- 16:41Speaker 1: So first Greg by next week, probably by Wednesday or Thursday,
- 16:45Speaker 1: he's gonna recap the first wave of free agency with us,
- 16:49Speaker 1: and then pretty the week after that, and then we'll
- 16:53Speaker 1: start recording some shows with him. But the week after
- 16:55Speaker 1: that we'll start pumping out the NFL Draft previews. Uh,
- 16:59Speaker 1: you know, creation great and we'll have all of the
- 17:02Speaker 1: guys broken down.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Awesome, man, looking forward to it. Awesome.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Yeah, it's gonna be great and we're really looking forward.
- 17:09Speaker 1: And I think we'll for our Patreon folks, we've got
- 17:11Speaker 1: some ask Greg Cosels lined up for him for them
- 17:15Speaker 1: as well, so we can answer their questions alive in
- 17:18Speaker 1: that room, so.
- 17:19Speaker 2: All good stuff.
- 17:19Speaker 1: And we do have some other good asking Eagles coming
- 17:22Speaker 1: up to after free agency is over with, so everything,
- 17:25Speaker 1: we're about to take that pedal.
- 17:27Speaker 2: And put it right down to the medal.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Right there as we get ready for free agency in
- 17:31Speaker 1: the new league year and then the draft right all right,
- 17:34Speaker 1: that we'll do it for this episode of Inside the Birds,
- 17:37Speaker 1: Deleting Podcasts and Eagles Intel. As always, we thank you
- 17:41Speaker 1: for flying with us Inside the Birds.
