Latest / Twin Cities Territory / Royce Lewis with five hits, but Twins lose series to Tigers
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: The Twins lose a series in Detroit Byron Buxton talks
- 0:05Speaker 1: about his recent struggles with runners in scoring position some
- 0:09Speaker 1: offensive success for Royce, Lewis and Moore today on the
- 0:12Speaker 1: latest edition of Twins Cities Territory or Minnesota Twins podcast
- 0:17Speaker 1: here on the Foul Territory Network. I'm not going to
- 0:19Speaker 1: play the sound bite. I'm not going to do it.
- 0:22Speaker 1: We're past that now. We're putting the radio fight to bed.
- 0:24Speaker 1: We're moving on with our lives. Since we were here
- 0:27Speaker 1: with you last guys, a couple of games in Detroit,
- 0:30Speaker 1: we talked after the opening loss. The Twins bounced back
- 0:33Speaker 1: Wednesday night with a win and as if on c
- 0:36Speaker 1: after us talking about buxton struggles with runners on base,
- 0:40Speaker 1: he hits a three run homer to help key that
- 0:43Speaker 1: six to four victory, and then an absolute meltdown on
- 0:47Speaker 1: Thursday and eleven nothing drubbing to end the series. They
- 0:51Speaker 1: are now thirty one and thirty nine and coming home
- 0:54Speaker 1: again for a quick series against the Cardinals. But Dan,
- 0:58Speaker 1: you were in Detroit. A solid win Wednesday followed up
- 1:01Speaker 1: I want to forget about real quick on Thursday. What
- 1:05Speaker 1: were your thoughts on the games?
- 1:07Speaker 2: First, let's let's focus on the positives here, guys. You guys,
- 1:10Speaker 2: we went through that radio war and you guys are alive.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Nothing happened, We didn't get taken out. We're still breathing
- 1:17Speaker 2: or walking around. You know. This is probably when they
- 1:21Speaker 2: get us, by the way, that's right.
- 1:23Speaker 1: This is the false sense of security.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Let our guards when yeah, well we let your guards do.
- 1:27Speaker 3: We've got a hold strong into the deadline because yeah,
- 1:31Speaker 3: stranger things have happened.
- 1:33Speaker 2: They have, they have. We can't bring back that meter either.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what it's going to come back. If if
- 1:39Speaker 1: Dan turns out to be uh incorrect and Byron Buxton
- 1:43Speaker 1: is traded, we are going to hear about that. I
- 1:45Speaker 1: would expect Dan's only.
- 1:47Speaker 3: One who even spoke about it. I don't know what
- 1:50Speaker 3: you're talking about.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Anyways. Anyways, so we get the positives out of the way.
- 1:56Speaker 2: The rest of it was pretty bad. I mean, like,
- 1:59Speaker 2: look there there were little glimmers of hope and stuff.
- 2:02Speaker 2: And the Wednesday victory was a good one, a bullpen
- 2:08Speaker 2: day that went well, like you saw good performances across
- 2:11Speaker 2: the board, like Mike Paradis. That was such a weird game.
- 2:15Speaker 2: They started the game the managers both signed off on
- 2:19Speaker 2: starting the game, and thirteen minutes in the rink. By
- 2:23Speaker 2: the way, we waited till six forty seven to start game.
- 2:26Speaker 2: It was a six forty start time. They had a
- 2:28Speaker 2: meeting right up until the start. They decided, let's do
- 2:31Speaker 2: this from ber Valdez takes the mound, gets the one, two,
- 2:35Speaker 2: three pitches for six minutes, and then they put the
- 2:38Speaker 2: tarpa on as Mike Paradis is starting to warm up,
- 2:41Speaker 2: and it was like this, the storm popped up out
- 2:43Speaker 2: of nowhere, apparently on the radar, but they still were
- 2:45Speaker 2: talking about they knew it was possible, and we had
- 2:48Speaker 2: an hour and seven minute rain delay. In the series,
- 2:51Speaker 2: we had two hours and fifty eight minutes. The one
- 2:54Speaker 2: the part that sucks about that not being three hours
- 2:56Speaker 2: is everybody that attended would have got a set of
- 2:58Speaker 2: steak knives if we had three hours of rain delays
- 3:01Speaker 2: for the series. They you know, we came up too
- 3:03Speaker 2: much short. So another negative. That's why I.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Can't be true.
- 3:06Speaker 2: That can't be true in my world, Yes it is.
- 3:10Speaker 2: I would have found somebody anyways, So like that was
- 3:13Speaker 2: a random uh, It's like it was a good bounce back.
- 3:17Speaker 2: From the Twins Paradis because he's a reliever. They were like, hey,
- 3:20Speaker 2: look there's times where you get hot and then you
- 3:24Speaker 2: sit down for a while, and like that's how they
- 3:27Speaker 2: treated it. Was that Mike Paradis got ready for the
- 3:29Speaker 2: start and then he came back after the hour and
- 3:31Speaker 2: seven minutes. Shockingly, Fromber came back and pitched, and Fromber
- 3:36Speaker 2: by the time he took them on was like seventy
- 3:38Speaker 2: five minutes in, which is just to me, totally wild.
- 3:41Speaker 2: But Derek Shelton said he was not at all surprised
- 3:43Speaker 2: that happened. And they got Frombert the Twins Royce Lewis
- 3:47Speaker 2: homer in that game. Byron Buckston hit the three run
- 3:49Speaker 2: homer with you know, provided a hit with runners in
- 3:52Speaker 2: scoring position. We'll talk about that in a second. Anthony
- 3:55Speaker 2: Bonda had some amazing like he got some big out
- 4:00Speaker 2: that night. Jo Ander Scom has survived as scare so
- 4:03Speaker 2: there were good signs everywhere he looked in that game
- 4:07Speaker 2: and then all of it went away Thursday. I mean,
- 4:09Speaker 2: Alex Jackson was pitching. He's you know, he's their catcher,
- 4:13Speaker 2: and he gave up two home runs in the eighth inning.
- 4:15Speaker 2: The taking over in an eight nothing game and win Seal.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Perez is a switch hitter and he opted to hit
- 4:23Speaker 2: right handed against Alex Jackson, who throws right handed, and
- 4:27Speaker 2: he hit a two run homer. That's just kind of
- 4:30Speaker 2: how it went. And so it was. It was just
- 4:32Speaker 2: an ugly series. The Tigers are not who we kind
- 4:36Speaker 2: of thought they were. The Tigers they got in the
- 4:39Speaker 2: last like eight or nine days back. They got Glabor
- 4:42Speaker 2: Torres and Kerry Carpenter and that offense is mashing right
- 4:46Speaker 2: now and scoobas yeah, and Schooble's coming. So the Tigers
- 4:51Speaker 2: are getting hot at the right time. The weather was
- 4:54Speaker 2: miserable all three days, Like it was ninety three degrees
- 4:59Speaker 2: when I was driving to the report in Detroit on
- 5:01Speaker 2: Thursday and I landed and it was sixty two degrees
- 5:04Speaker 2: in Minnesota. That was wonderful to feel fresh air again.
- 5:08Speaker 2: I mean, it was just stifling hot and not good baseball.
- 5:11Speaker 2: It was a pretty ugly three days, even though they
- 5:13Speaker 2: got the win in the middle.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Ugly indeed, And I'm sorry for your personal struggles, Dan,
- 5:21Speaker 1: with the weather. That sounds horrible. Glad you made it
- 5:24Speaker 1: through the twins.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I was really struggling to type it was very difficult.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, I bet the Twins are down on a
- 5:33Speaker 1: six and a half out in the central of the
- 5:35Speaker 1: new first place team in the central. By the way,
- 5:37Speaker 1: the Chicago White Sox passed be struggling Cleveland Guardians for first,
- 5:43Speaker 1: but just a game and a half clear the Tigers
- 5:45Speaker 1: and fourth and two and a half clear of the Royals. Tyler,
- 5:48Speaker 1: the only thing I had to say about Thursday's game,
- 5:51Speaker 1: and I forgot to introduce ourselves at the top of
- 5:53Speaker 1: the show. Zach Pierce of The Athletic, Dan Hayes, also
- 5:56Speaker 1: The Athletic, the Twins beat writer for the Athletic, and
- 5:58Speaker 1: Tyler Duffy, a long time major leage. You're I. I
- 6:02Speaker 1: I always feel like, if you're gonna if you're gonna
- 6:04Speaker 1: have a game where you give up eleven runs and
- 6:06Speaker 1: have to have position players pitch, that is the game
- 6:08Speaker 1: to get shut out and just like get both of
- 6:11Speaker 1: the word.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Ye just lose, just just absolute bottom of the barrel.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Yeah, it's one.
- 6:17Speaker 3: It's like the game starts, you know, and you're behind
- 6:20Speaker 3: and you're kind of not getting in gear as a staff,
- 6:22Speaker 3: and then it's just like Homer's because that's the crazy
- 6:25Speaker 3: part It wasn't like, oh, we're getting single to death,
- 6:27Speaker 3: like I remember Randy Dobnach had a game in Detroit.
- 6:31Speaker 3: He gave up like fifteen singles or some absurd amount,
- 6:35Speaker 3: you know. But when the ball is just leaving the
- 6:37Speaker 3: yard like that, it's like, all right, so what are
- 6:40Speaker 3: we doing for dinner later? Kind of thing, Like it's
- 6:42Speaker 3: just the game's over and you could just feel it.
- 6:45Speaker 3: The energy shifts and it is what it is, and
- 6:49Speaker 3: you know, but yeah, that's when you get done. One
- 6:52Speaker 3: superstition player goes in as a staff. I think I
- 6:55Speaker 3: said this the other day. We were talking about something.
- 6:56Speaker 3: But you kind of in the bullpen like look over
- 6:58Speaker 3: your shoulder at each other, like, hey, at least it
- 7:00Speaker 3: wasn't us today. You know, kids, it's one to stay
- 7:03Speaker 3: out of. And you know, as a position player, even
- 7:06Speaker 3: it's like you go up there, you're never you're going
- 7:07Speaker 3: to get out. It's just one of those energy shifting games.
- 7:11Speaker 3: And the momentum has just gone. And like Dan said,
- 7:14Speaker 3: they're probably happy to get back to nice crisp Minnesota weather.
- 7:18Speaker 4: When they got off that plane yesterday.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I had a question, Duff, real quick, did you like
- 7:26Speaker 2: the advent of stat cast as far as telling you
- 7:30Speaker 2: when a home run might be legit or you know,
- 7:33Speaker 2: not a legitimate home run, because I imagine these ones were sent. Yeah,
- 7:41Speaker 2: whats like, because yesterday there were a couple of there
- 7:46Speaker 2: were a couple of ballpark specials that got out that
- 7:50Speaker 2: the weather was weather was warm, and I'm wondering, like
- 7:53Speaker 2: how you would have the Riley Green one was a
- 7:56Speaker 2: homer in fifteen or thirty parks off Debbie Matthews, up
- 8:00Speaker 2: and away and he took it to left field and
- 8:02Speaker 2: left field. There's a nice little short fortune in the
- 8:06Speaker 2: corner and left field and Riley Green is excelling there.
- 8:11Speaker 2: So yeah, what do you think about those those stats?
- 8:13Speaker 2: And like are those good for a picture? Psyche?
- 8:17Speaker 3: Yes, it is great to know a little bit of
- 8:20Speaker 3: the stat cast info. And I know it's changed, like
- 8:23Speaker 3: I know Minnesota has it on the banner, like you know,
- 8:26Speaker 3: I think guys will even quick look. I remember there's
- 8:28Speaker 3: a hitter that would it was a Rooker maybe, like
- 8:32Speaker 3: he would really swing the bat and immediately look and
- 8:34Speaker 3: you just know whether to home or.
- 8:36Speaker 4: Not, which is good. You know, it's it's one it's refreshing. Sometimes.
- 8:41Speaker 3: I also know, like hey, that ball wasn't hit that well,
- 8:44Speaker 3: like it just got out today because of X situation.
- 8:48Speaker 3: You know, it's hot, you know, like target field. Depending
- 8:51Speaker 3: on the wind, like sometimes it goes one direction and
- 8:54Speaker 3: kind of circles around. It gets weird in there, like
- 8:57Speaker 3: you know, you're playing at Wrigley and it alls eight
- 9:00Speaker 3: hundred feet with a twenty.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Five min hour tailwind.
- 9:02Speaker 3: So it's like, you know, it is at least you
- 9:05Speaker 3: can have some solace in like, Okay, I didn't give
- 9:08Speaker 3: up an absolute nuke, but you know, as a pitcher,
- 9:12Speaker 3: you give up enough homers as I have. You know,
- 9:15Speaker 3: you can see it off the bat pretty much, you know,
- 9:18Speaker 3: like yikes, like that one's going to be close, And
- 9:21Speaker 3: I did love I played with Byron long enough, which
- 9:24Speaker 3: was really cool. You know, it's like no one else
- 9:27Speaker 3: could see it, but like I could tell by the
- 9:29Speaker 3: way he was running after balls whether the ball's going
- 9:32Speaker 3: out of the stadium or not, Like he has a
- 9:34Speaker 3: different stride at times when he's like all right, he's
- 9:37Speaker 3: about to lay out and dive or this is like
- 9:39Speaker 3: an easy basket catch like just on the run, or
- 9:42Speaker 3: he has zero chance, and you know, like I said,
- 9:45Speaker 3: it's it was fun to know that, but it's also
- 9:48Speaker 3: a bad feeling when nobody's moving and they just kind
- 9:51Speaker 3: of put you know, Eddie Rizzari used to just drop
- 9:53Speaker 3: his head down, and the ones that go in the
- 9:54Speaker 3: third day sometimes, you know. But yes, statcast is great
- 9:59Speaker 3: for some things and not so for the others.
- 10:01Speaker 4: But yeah, that's all right.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Yeah, that's bring it up because Zbbe Matthews gave up
- 10:06Speaker 2: four and Riley Greens would Riley Greens actually wasn't off
- 10:11Speaker 2: Zebby and Zebby didn't give up four Paulos Zebbi, Zebbe
- 10:15Speaker 2: gave up free but one of them, one of them
- 10:18Speaker 2: was a twenty out of thirty parks as the Glaber
- 10:20Speaker 2: Torres three to zero fastball that Glaber hits.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Yeah, that was well struck.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know there there was a little bit
- 10:29Speaker 2: like you could tell Zebby was afterwards. He gave up
- 10:32Speaker 2: seven runs and he was not pleased, But also he
- 10:35Speaker 2: wasn't This wasn't a total defeated day for him. I
- 10:40Speaker 2: think the Pittsburgh won a couple of starts Ago was
- 10:43Speaker 2: much harder to take. He just he wasn't he wasn't
- 10:46Speaker 2: on I don't think, I don't know those conditions is
- 10:51Speaker 2: ninety three and humid, so the ball was traveling. I
- 10:56Speaker 2: think they they weren't as beating beating themselves up as
- 11:00Speaker 2: much as they like as you would think. But it
- 11:04Speaker 2: was a tough, tough scene no matter what. It was
- 11:07Speaker 2: a six home runs from the Tigers yesterday, and.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a big number anybody any game.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Like Tyler said at that point, just lose. Let's get
- 11:17Speaker 1: to the next day, Just move on, just get next.

- 12:42Speaker 4: Thank you, Seat Geek.
- 12:46Speaker 1: All right, guys. Byron Buxton. We talked about a little
- 12:50Speaker 1: bit at the top of the show, but on on
- 12:52Speaker 1: Wednesday show we found something to criticize him for with
- 12:57Speaker 1: his poor average with runners on base, and then he
- 13:00Speaker 1: promptly went out and shoved it in our face with
- 13:02Speaker 1: the three run home run. But he also talked about
- 13:06Speaker 1: it a bit after Wednesday's game, and Dan Hayes wrote
- 13:10Speaker 1: about it on The Athletic. You can read that right
- 13:12Speaker 1: now at the Athletic dot com on Byron Buxton and
- 13:15Speaker 1: his struggles in his comments. But Dan, for those who
- 13:19Speaker 1: prefer to listen to it, what did he have to say?
- 13:23Speaker 2: Yeah? It was. It was kind of revealing because I
- 13:27Speaker 2: you know, I was the only one there and I
- 13:29Speaker 2: had the camera with me because MLB TV doesn't have
- 13:33Speaker 2: the reporter in there after the game, Audre's doing the sidelines.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Audre Martin is doing the sideline show, and so it's
- 13:40Speaker 2: me walking around with the camera guy. And usually I
- 13:42Speaker 2: limited to like one player, like the pitcher. And in
- 13:46Speaker 2: this case, they were asking if Byron. I was like, sure,
- 13:49Speaker 2: why not? I mean it was a home run. So
- 13:50Speaker 2: I walked up and asked him. And before the game,
- 13:52Speaker 2: Shelton had mentioned that he put Byron in a two
- 13:55Speaker 2: spot to shake things up a little bit. Byron has
- 13:59Speaker 2: a ton of solo home runs and they were looking
- 14:01Speaker 2: to maybe get him in a spot where he could
- 14:03Speaker 2: change that. And you know, we've talked about those runners
- 14:07Speaker 2: in scoring positions, struggles and so I asked him. I
- 14:10Speaker 2: was like, hey, Shelty said, you guys are trying to
- 14:12Speaker 2: shake it up and get you some situations runners on
- 14:16Speaker 2: base and he's like, I don't care. He's like, I
- 14:18Speaker 2: got the hit with runners in scoring position, simple as that.
- 14:21Speaker 2: And it was like so I was like, wait, so
- 14:24Speaker 2: is this you know, is this something you're thinking about?
- 14:27Speaker 2: And he said all the time. And it just struck
- 14:30Speaker 2: me as like, wait a minute. You're having a monster season,
- 14:33Speaker 2: you're having this all Star season, and this is what
- 14:36Speaker 2: you're thinking about. And the quotes were great. He said,
- 14:39Speaker 2: it's somewhere I'm struggling. I'm working really hard at that.
- 14:42Speaker 2: I'm probably just putting in a little bit too much
- 14:44Speaker 2: pressure on myself in those situations because I want to
- 14:46Speaker 2: get the job done. But it felt good to come through.
- 14:49Speaker 2: And then he said that I said, like I was
- 14:52Speaker 2: letting him off the hook a little bit. And I
- 14:53Speaker 2: was like, you know, look, you had a nine eighty
- 14:55Speaker 2: six LPs with runs in scoring position last year. You
- 15:00Speaker 2: you have a career seven thirty four ops, which we
- 15:02Speaker 2: said there day is it's okay, it's not amazing, but
- 15:05Speaker 2: still solid. And I was like, isn't it possible. This
- 15:10Speaker 2: is just a bad batch of forty eight fifty played appearances.
- 15:14Speaker 2: And he said, okay, good point. He's like, but I'm
- 15:17Speaker 2: not looking at it like that. And he said, some
- 15:20Speaker 2: of those you missed your pitch. You did this, They
- 15:22Speaker 2: made a good pitch. It's more me bearing down in
- 15:26Speaker 2: those situations and trying to get my job done. And
- 15:28Speaker 2: you know, it was a brief interview, but it was
- 15:31Speaker 2: illuminating because Byron has been fantastic in so many areas
- 15:35Speaker 2: this year. But you know, he came up in that
- 15:38Speaker 2: game early on with runners on second and third, Detroit
- 15:41Speaker 2: was playing the infield in and Kevin McGonagall. Byron hit
- 15:45Speaker 2: a chopper to third and McGonagall fielded it and through
- 15:49Speaker 2: home and easily got I think it was Josh Bell.
- 15:52Speaker 2: And the next halfening, Mike Bretis gives up a hit
- 15:55Speaker 2: Byron Bucks and made a diving attempt. I think it
- 15:57Speaker 2: was Glab Torris hit a double to right and and
- 16:00Speaker 2: you could see it slammed down his glove after his
- 16:03Speaker 2: miss dive, and he never really you know, I know
- 16:06Speaker 2: it was frustration they didn't make the catch, but also
- 16:09Speaker 2: I think there's some frustration that he put the ball
- 16:12Speaker 2: in play just halfening before and what you know, great
- 16:17Speaker 2: defensive play made it. You know, in a situation where
- 16:21Speaker 2: they were like, if he hits it hard, they're scoring,
- 16:24Speaker 2: and he was. He was frustrated again, like you could
- 16:26Speaker 2: just tell that he is frustrated by this, and so
- 16:29Speaker 2: the home run was was good for them, good for him.
- 16:34Speaker 2: He actually came up and missed out on another opportunity late,
- 16:39Speaker 2: so he went one for three in that game with
- 16:41Speaker 2: runners in scoring position. But it's funny because overall he
- 16:44Speaker 2: walked and he got a single, so he get this
- 16:47Speaker 2: is a game that he went three for five or
- 16:49Speaker 2: got on base three out of five times. And I'm
- 16:51Speaker 2: going to guarantee all he's thinking about are those two misses.
- 16:56Speaker 2: So relieving the pressure is good. Anything that can get
- 16:59Speaker 2: him going in that direction. He's the number is updated
- 17:03Speaker 2: now or he's batting one forty. His on basis two
- 17:05Speaker 2: fifty five. His slug is three h two and fifty
- 17:09Speaker 2: one played appearances with runners in scoring position, he's got
- 17:11Speaker 2: two homers and nine RBIs. But again, really illuminating, and
- 17:15Speaker 2: I was fascinated just to be there and hear him
- 17:17Speaker 2: talk about it.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Tyler, how much do players hate it when they're having
- 17:23Speaker 1: an all star worthy season and then beat writers like
- 17:26Speaker 1: Dan come in and only focus on the negative.
- 17:30Speaker 4: It's the best, we love it, it's the best thing ever. No,
- 17:34Speaker 4: it is like it's something obviously.
- 17:37Speaker 3: You think about, like if you're aware at all, you
- 17:41Speaker 3: kind of have an idea, Like, you know, I don't
- 17:43Speaker 3: know how big. A lot of guys aren't on social media,
- 17:46Speaker 3: so like they won't run into a random tweet about them,
- 17:50Speaker 3: you know, things like that, and it's it makes sense
- 17:52Speaker 3: why you would avoid it. But at the same time,
- 17:54Speaker 3: like Byron's he's aware of how good he is. You know,
- 17:57Speaker 3: he would never say that, he would never even think
- 18:00Speaker 3: those thoughts.
- 18:02Speaker 4: But in the in those moments, he.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Is confident and to dance point to that, like when
- 18:06Speaker 3: he wanted to catch that ball, Like, yes, he was
- 18:09Speaker 3: frustrated maybe with other things, but like he fully expects
- 18:13Speaker 3: to catch anything that goes in the air and that
- 18:15Speaker 3: is the best part. Like he could be having the
- 18:17Speaker 3: greatest year of his life, but like he misses one
- 18:20Speaker 3: ball for you as a pitcher, and he's gonna come
- 18:23Speaker 3: literally apologize at times, and it's like, dude, I know
- 18:26Speaker 3: you think you need to catch everything, but like I
- 18:28Speaker 3: would just rather you keep trying the way that you are.
- 18:31Speaker 3: That is perfect because he is like he gets actually
- 18:34Speaker 3: angry and it's like pissed off about it. And that's
- 18:37Speaker 3: why he's so great, you know, that's why everybody loves him,
- 18:40Speaker 3: you know, and he's he's gets so fired up. You know,
- 18:42Speaker 3: we talked about this earlier in the year, like when
- 18:44Speaker 3: he's having fun and excited, like it's exciting because he's
- 18:48Speaker 3: a quiet guy, Like he gets a little riled up
- 18:50Speaker 3: here and there, you know, has a good time, but
- 18:53Speaker 3: he's going to keep to himself.
- 18:54Speaker 4: He's going to do his work. He's gonna go hit
- 18:56Speaker 4: in the cage.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Get ready for a ball game, and then he's gonna
- 18:58Speaker 3: go be ready for the first pitch and hit it
- 19:00Speaker 3: four fifty.
- 19:01Speaker 4: You know, it's been him since he's been a twin.
- 19:05Speaker 3: You know, sorry for the rhyme there, but it's just
- 19:08Speaker 3: like what he does, it's just like, you know, he's
- 19:11Speaker 3: an incredible player, and you know, the greats never stopped
- 19:15Speaker 3: trying to get better and keep developing, and he's obviously
- 19:19Speaker 3: aware of it. And that's, like Dan said, that's a
- 19:21Speaker 3: huge weight lifted for him and probably for the Twins.
- 19:24Speaker 3: You know, Chelsea mixed it up and it worked. You know,
- 19:26Speaker 3: that's all you can ask for, and you know that
- 19:29Speaker 3: builds confidence going going back home, and you know, hopefully
- 19:32Speaker 3: get a few more opportunities here.
- 19:34Speaker 4: I'm sure you will tonight.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Twenty homers is tied for third in Major League Baseball
- 19:41Speaker 1: for Byron Buxton, and he added one more with runners
- 19:45Speaker 1: on base this week against Detroit. The other hitter that
- 19:51Speaker 1: we wanted to talk about today was Royce Lewis, who
- 19:54Speaker 1: was the top performer. Oh gosh, the shadows again. What's
- 19:59Speaker 1: going on? I a preview that thing, and you guys
- 20:02Speaker 1: saw there was no shadow on there, all right?
- 20:04Speaker 2: You know what? This is what happens to it. This
- 20:07Speaker 2: is what happens during a rough stretch podcast.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Just a bunch of angers up here for sure. Anyway,
- 20:17Speaker 1: somehow it just magically went away. So I'll take it.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Royce Lewis five for twelve on the week, really the
- 20:23Speaker 1: top offensive performer by a lot of measures for the
- 20:27Speaker 1: Twins in this series against Detroit, which Dan has to
- 20:30Speaker 1: feel good for a guy who obviously just came off
- 20:33Speaker 1: a triple A stint trying to fix his swing.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll talk about the swing in just a second,
- 20:40Speaker 2: because I like, I saw like what Tyler has said,
- 20:45Speaker 2: and I've seen it online everywhere. He is doing this thing,
- 20:49Speaker 2: this thing with his back foot where he is getting
- 20:52Speaker 2: setting it down.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Before he gets like Aaronato's.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, it's And so I asked him about it
- 21:00Speaker 2: and he says, drill work that he's brought into the
- 21:02Speaker 2: game and it feels comfortable right now. Who knows how
- 21:05Speaker 2: long that sticks. I think right now he's just looking
- 21:07Speaker 2: to get comfortable and find it. But he had two
- 21:12Speaker 2: sharp singles again on h had the home run on Wednesday, Yeah,
- 21:18Speaker 2: Wednesday night, and he had two sharp singles yesterday. It's
- 21:23Speaker 2: starting to come around for him because he started the
- 21:26Speaker 2: series with a bluep double that fell in. It was
- 21:29Speaker 2: just a ball to center fielder absolutely should have caught
- 21:32Speaker 2: and didn't get a glove on. So he got a
- 21:33Speaker 2: single out of that or a double out of that,
- 21:36Speaker 2: and then he got a broken bat single on the infield,
- 21:39Speaker 2: and so you could tell, like, all right, cool, he
- 21:41Speaker 2: got two hits that he needed essentially in the ledger form.
- 21:46Speaker 2: But then he followed it up with the second longest
- 21:49Speaker 2: home run of his career Wednesday, and the really two
- 21:54Speaker 2: sharp singles on Thursday and they were like classic pullball
- 21:58Speaker 2: through the whole good looking wings that resulted in hit
- 22:01Speaker 2: so five for twelve in the series, walked once, got
- 22:05Speaker 2: on base six out of thirteen times. Asked Byron about
- 22:08Speaker 2: the home run that Royce hit, because you know, Byron
- 22:11Speaker 2: is Royce's biggest fan, and he said, the dugout was
- 22:15Speaker 2: that was a really big celebration. We have a partied
- 22:17Speaker 2: like that in the dugout in a long time. Like
- 22:19Speaker 2: these guys want him to do well and for him
- 22:22Speaker 2: to get the results is really encouraging, especially because it's
- 22:26Speaker 2: coming with some really hard work at first base and
- 22:29Speaker 2: second base. And I wrote about that this morning that
- 22:34Speaker 2: Royce Lewis did his second meeting with Justin Mooren and
- 22:38Speaker 2: Moreno got out there in ninety something degree weather on
- 22:41Speaker 2: Friday and then went to the booth. But he spent
- 22:44Speaker 2: a half hour with Royce Lewis and Luke Kishaw going
- 22:48Speaker 2: over the final points of first base and with Royce
- 22:50Speaker 2: it had been more the week before was when they
- 22:53Speaker 2: did their own crash course. That's how Justin described it
- 22:56Speaker 2: at Saint Paul. Before Royce got called up, they spent
- 22:59Speaker 2: an hour we're out there that day and he went
- 23:02Speaker 2: over everything with him, like foot placement on the bag, positioning,
- 23:07Speaker 2: where to be on cuts, like everything. They just went
- 23:10Speaker 2: over everything. Asking Royce about that, he said that, what, like,
- 23:14Speaker 2: he's doing all he can because wherever the team needs
- 23:17Speaker 2: him right now, he's he's willing to plug in. And
- 23:20Speaker 2: we saw him get, you know, two starts at first
- 23:22Speaker 2: base at Triple A. He got three starts and an
- 23:25Speaker 2: appearance at first base over the last four games, and
- 23:29Speaker 2: then yesterday they played him at second and you know,
- 23:32Speaker 2: we finally saw some chances at first base. The Wednesday night.
- 23:38Speaker 2: He had really only had two balls at him, and
- 23:40Speaker 2: one of them he didn't get the ball hard shot
- 23:44Speaker 2: to the right. More No said, it's one of the
- 23:46Speaker 2: harder plays you'll you'll get where it's a diving stab
- 23:49Speaker 2: at a ninety six mile hour ball. But like, nothing
- 23:55Speaker 2: he's done is impacted the game so far, defensively, nothing
- 23:59Speaker 2: there was a took a bad hop on him yesterday,
- 24:02Speaker 2: So he's getting he's logging these experiences and coming away like, oh,
- 24:07Speaker 2: I didn't screw this up. And that's good too, just
- 24:10Speaker 2: because he's basically a fish out of water. But he's
- 24:13Speaker 2: not discouraged. He's actually encouraged and you can tell he
- 24:18Speaker 2: wants to do whatever you can to help them out.
- 24:20Speaker 2: So that's a good attitude about the situation, I think too.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Take quick break, come back with a little bit more
- 24:26Speaker 1: on Royce Lewis and a look ahead to the Cardinals
- 24:30Speaker 1: series coming up this weekend at target Field.

- 25:30Speaker 7: Gambling problem caller tex one eight hundred gambler.
- 25:36Speaker 1: I think another notable stat from Royce Lewis's series in
- 25:40Speaker 1: Detroit just two strikeouts in the twelve at bats. He
- 25:44Speaker 1: was striking out about once every three at bats roughly
- 25:48Speaker 1: prior to that small sample size, of course, But Tyler,
- 25:53Speaker 1: what have you noticed in his return at the plate
- 25:56Speaker 1: and how he's looking.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Yeah, there's still a lot going on in the box.
- 26:03Speaker 3: I feel like like, you know, you watch a game
- 26:05Speaker 3: and like swings generally look similar, like there's a consistency
- 26:09Speaker 3: to most of them, and like Dan hit on, like
- 26:12Speaker 3: he's bringing some of his drill work into games, which
- 26:14Speaker 3: is great as long as it goes well. It's you know,
- 26:18Speaker 3: but he's squaring the ball up, which is what you want.
- 26:21Speaker 3: You want to be on time, which seems to be coming.
- 26:23Speaker 3: You know, hit the homers like left center, I think
- 26:25Speaker 3: over the bullpen right, so like that's typically a good sign.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Like you know, when you're hitting balls to the pole,
- 26:31Speaker 3: you know you're either out in front you're really early
- 26:34Speaker 3: or late, you know kind of thing. You know, the
- 26:37Speaker 3: time is good, you know, the whatever the reset was,
- 26:39Speaker 3: which you know, I probably could do some reading and
- 26:41Speaker 3: figure out what he you know, if he spoke on it.
- 26:44Speaker 4: But you know, there's a lot going on.
- 26:46Speaker 3: And at the same time, him moving positions might be
- 26:49Speaker 3: helping a little bit, as weird as that sounds, because
- 26:53Speaker 3: he's having to worry about more than just hitting. You know,
- 26:56Speaker 3: it's it's not all right, what am I going to
- 26:58Speaker 3: do with the bat today? It's like I got to
- 27:00Speaker 3: go play first, you know, and he's doing the crash
- 27:02Speaker 3: course with morning. You know, the sneakiest thing at first base,
- 27:06Speaker 3: like people don't think about and you know, the or
- 27:08Speaker 3: the casual fan I should say, doesn't the footwork over
- 27:11Speaker 3: there is not a walk in the park, Like there's
- 27:14Speaker 3: a lot of making sure you know exactly where you
- 27:17Speaker 3: are so when you step you're on the base because
- 27:20Speaker 3: as simple as catching the ball from the shortstop and
- 27:22Speaker 3: you're not on the bag, well he's safe now because
- 27:24Speaker 3: your feet weren't right. So that point, like I think
- 27:29Speaker 3: him worried about all that, you know, having some confidence
- 27:33Speaker 3: from Saint Paul, you know, he tore the cover off
- 27:34Speaker 3: the baseball for two weeks and came back and he's
- 27:37Speaker 3: getting to show it. He you know, the momentums building.
- 27:41Speaker 3: You know, he had a great series, like Zach said,
- 27:43Speaker 3: he struck out twice. You know, he's putting the ball
- 27:46Speaker 3: in play, he's hitting the ball hard. That those are
- 27:48Speaker 3: all the good things you want from that option period.
- 27:52Speaker 3: You know, he got sent down, came right back and
- 27:54Speaker 3: he's he's hit the ground running, and you know it's
- 27:57Speaker 3: it's he's becoming the threat piece that we need to
- 28:01Speaker 3: plug in.
- 28:02Speaker 4: You know, it's you know.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Clemens has had good stretches, Bells had great stretches. You know,
- 28:07Speaker 3: Austin Martin had, who's on a tear for a while there.
- 28:09Speaker 3: It's just like there's someone has to help Byron be
- 28:13Speaker 3: Byron at times, and you know, whether it's getting on
- 28:16Speaker 3: base in front of him, or protecting behind him, or
- 28:18Speaker 3: even driving him in after he.
- 28:20Speaker 4: Hits a double, you know, here and there.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Like it's a little stuff like that that will accumulate
- 28:24Speaker 3: into wins. You know, it's it's more run scored, it's
- 28:27Speaker 3: more support for the pitching staff. They can breathe easier.
- 28:30Speaker 3: It's just it all starts that up quickly. But you know,
- 28:34Speaker 3: he's he looks great. You know, he's hitting the ball hard.
- 28:36Speaker 3: That's all you can ask for, you know, with a
- 28:38Speaker 3: guy like him, it's there's a lot going on and
- 28:40Speaker 3: it's just just barrel it up and go.
- 28:44Speaker 1: The Twins come home for just three games against the
- 28:47Speaker 1: Cardinals this weekend Friday to Sunday, and then they're back
- 28:50Speaker 1: on the road to Texas and Arizona. It's about as
- 28:54Speaker 1: good of a pitching lineup as this battered starting rotation
- 28:58Speaker 1: could hope for right now. Joe Ryan and Connor pre
- 29:01Speaker 1: Liptaje Bradley set up for the weekend against Kyle Lahey,
- 29:05Speaker 1: Matthew Liberator and Michael McGreevy on the weekend Dan The
- 29:09Speaker 1: Cardinals one of the better teams record wise, at least
- 29:13Speaker 1: that has been on the Twins schedule in a while, though,
- 29:15Speaker 1: so it should be as they all are at this
- 29:17Speaker 1: point for this team. Another challenging one.
- 29:20Speaker 2: It is, and you know, it's a really weird part
- 29:24Speaker 2: of the schedule. Three game road trip, three game homestand
- 29:27Speaker 2: back on the road for seven. But they you know,
- 29:31Speaker 2: it's a chance for them to figure it out in
- 29:34Speaker 2: front of a crowd that you know is excited to
- 29:38Speaker 2: see them, and I don't know, just looking for game.
- 29:41Speaker 2: The sparks started at this point because they need something
- 29:44Speaker 2: where the seventy game mark. They're thirty one and thirty nine.
- 29:49Speaker 2: One good note. Mick Abel did show up. He had
- 29:54Speaker 2: pitched in Toledo on Wednesday, so he was in the
- 29:57Speaker 2: clubhouse on Thursday and Detroit. He had a bad uber
- 30:01Speaker 2: ride on the way back. The guy circled Comerica Park
- 30:04Speaker 2: four times, not knowing where to drop him off because
- 30:08Speaker 2: they close off all this like they absolutely close shut
- 30:12Speaker 2: it down and make it very pedestrian friendly right before
- 30:15Speaker 2: a game. So Mick had trouble getting into the park,
- 30:19Speaker 2: but he felt good after his three innings five strikeouts.
- 30:23Speaker 2: The night before, outdueled Justin Verlander, hit ninety eight on
- 30:28Speaker 2: the gun. His slider was ninety one, which was four
- 30:31Speaker 2: miles up from earlier in the year. Talked to him
- 30:34Speaker 2: about that. He said he's trying to throw a harder
- 30:36Speaker 2: slider and it's the product of good health. And so
- 30:40Speaker 2: like he like, I don't know what we'll hear more
- 30:45Speaker 2: this weekend. I think about what the plan is with
- 30:47Speaker 2: him next. Because he went three and forty seven, and
- 30:50Speaker 2: I don't know if they'll insert him in the rotation
- 30:53Speaker 2: and take a build up game where he throws sixty
- 30:57Speaker 2: pitches and then gets pulled because they're working with nine.
- 31:00Speaker 2: It is. It is, so it wouldn't shock me if
- 31:02Speaker 2: he got one more at Triple A. But I think
- 31:05Speaker 2: he's very close to getting back to the rotation, which
- 31:08Speaker 2: is a good sign. They need anything they can get
- 31:10Speaker 2: right now. Really it is. It is scrap mode. So
- 31:14Speaker 2: you know, get royceless, go and get Firon bucks from
- 31:16Speaker 2: going again, and find some pitching because the pitching has
- 31:19Speaker 2: a over seventeen games a six six six era, they're
- 31:24Speaker 2: giving up six point eight runs a game over these.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Last seven sign five.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Yeah they're five and twelve. Yeah, sign of the devil.
- 31:31Speaker 2: You know that's not a good thing. Uh. The offense
- 31:36Speaker 2: isn't even performing poorly in this they're scoring about four
- 31:39Speaker 2: runs a game. That could be better, but it's not
- 31:41Speaker 2: like we're seeing the Twins be a team that's losing
- 31:46Speaker 2: four to two, you know, throughout the stretch. So they
- 31:50Speaker 2: need makeable, they need some good signs. And you know
- 31:53Speaker 2: who knows how that goes.
- 31:55Speaker 1: Well, It'll be Joe Ryan Friday night to hopefully get
- 31:59Speaker 1: the series started up on the right foot for them.
- 32:01Speaker 1: That's about that's the man for the job. I would say,
- 32:04Speaker 1: we'll see what happens Saturday and Sunday, both afternoon games
- 32:08Speaker 1: one ten pm starts. Dan, you mentioned the weird part
- 32:11Speaker 1: of the schedule, also noticing that they have the rare
- 32:14Speaker 1: mid series off day in Texas next week, playing Monday
- 32:18Speaker 1: Tuesday Thursday. Oh okay, that makes it.
- 32:21Speaker 2: I think I think England plays next door at Jerry World,
- 32:26Speaker 2: got it? And so they want the parking lots for that. Yeah,
- 32:29Speaker 2: there's gonna be one hundred thousand people. Probably don't fight that,
- 32:31Speaker 2: that'll be cool. Tickets are nine hundred dollars, Franny interested parties.
- 32:36Speaker 2: I will not be going to the World Cup game.
- 32:39Speaker 2: I'll watch it.
- 32:40Speaker 1: We got Dan, who's who's your pick to win the
- 32:43Speaker 1: World Cup.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Soccer? That's it? That's my pick.
- 32:49Speaker 1: I think you'll be right on that one.
- 32:50Speaker 2: All right, Yeah, who's yours? Well?
- 32:55Speaker 1: I have to root for Morocco because I got assigned
- 32:57Speaker 1: to Team Morocco in the company little random pool thing.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Who did you get, Dan? I didn't get one, Yes
- 33:05Speaker 1: you did, you just didn't pay it. You don't pay
- 33:07Speaker 1: attention to slack. That's all.
- 33:11Speaker 4: And Drew like Ireland or something.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Maybe I should edit this out before I out you
- 33:15Speaker 1: is not paying attention to.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Oh I'm I'm a guy.
- 33:23Speaker 4: Got a known powerhouse. Yeah, known powerhouse or I.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Think they won either one or hosted the inaugural or both.
- 33:31Speaker 1: I don't know. Anyway, steeped in history.
- 33:34Speaker 2: Over paying a big amount of attention to it. It's
- 33:40Speaker 2: a big poster.
- 33:40Speaker 3: Now, Tyler, you have a team, uh, I mean, since
- 33:45Speaker 3: we're here, I mean I might as well say, go Mexico.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, got off to a good start yesterday, that's
- 33:50Speaker 1: for sure.
