- speaker-0: Hey, welcome into Average Home Theater. I am Nelson. speaker-1: What's up everybody, it's producer Nick. speaker-0: And it is Sunday, September twenty seventh. And once again, another Sunday, the Saints were robbed. You are a watcher of football, you know it to be true. speaker-1: I feel like it's been ⁓ it's been a couple of weeks since we've we've done one of these together. I know you put something out a little bit ⁓ earlier in the week or maybe last weekend. ⁓ It's been busy. speaker-0: Well yeah, what I was I did I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cut you off. I did the ⁓ just a little small spoiler free review of Resident Evil, but since you went and watched it last night, I was like, Well, let's have a discussion. So this is going to be spoiler filled discussion of Resident Evil. speaker-1: No, you could. Yeah. ⁓ we went to see it what's today? Sunday? Yesterday. We went to see it yesterday at the movies. and ⁓ yeah, let's ⁓ let's get into it. Let's talk about it a little bit. speaker-0: Okay, so first off it's directed by Zach Krie Krieger. Is it Krieger? Is that how you say it? I think it's Krieger. ⁓ he directed He directed Barbarian and he directed Resident Evil. So needless to say speaker-1: And I like the barbarian. speaker-0: I said resume, I meant weapons. Weapons and barbarian. Yeah. If I said that right. So I was very excited to go and watch this, as as was everybody else. I mean, he he's batting, you know, he was two and ⁓ so why not? speaker-1: Krieger? Krieger? Krieger? speaker-0: Yeah, I think it's Kri I think it's Krieger, but maybe it's Krieger. speaker-1: I don't know. We know the guy That's who we're talking about. speaker-0: He is a very competent director. I love his style. It's very cool. Even though weapons wasn't my favorite, like it it was it was okay to me. It wasn't great. I know some people just think it's the greatest thing ever. I mean, I I give it like a seven and a half, I think is what I gave it when you and I talked about it. It's a it's a very good movie. speaker-1: Yeah. So I loved it, but it wasn't as you say, it was not the best thing I've ever seen. speaker-0: Ever. Yeah. So needless to say, after the horrible Resident Evil movies that exist, it was very welcoming to see that he was gonna take take the helm and and give us a Resident Evil movie. speaker-1: And from the first trailer, which the only I didn't come into this having watched any trailer, but the original trailer when it came out. I stayed away from all trailers and and ⁓ T V spots and all that. I I didn't see anything on it until we went to watch it. But I did remember getting a distinct feeling from that original trailer, like, okay, we've got a proper horror, gross graphic Resident Evil movie. in the style of like you say a weapons and a and a barbarian. It was I was very much looking forward to it, very excited for it. I did not ⁓ I am a fan of the show, but I did not watch your ⁓ your review. I wanted to go into it as completely blind as possible. ⁓ okay we we went see it last night. speaker-0: You have no idea really how I feel about speaker-1: No, no. I had asked you and you ⁓ your response I believe was is complicated. But ⁓ I I I did not watch the the review. I didn't want I didn't want my my opinions to be to be pre tainted. Okay. Can can I say tainted? Can I speaker-0: Yes. As long as you don't say the taint, what? speaker-1: ⁓ the taint. Okay, yeah, so we won't be saying the taint, but I can say tainted or pre tainted. speaker-0: Yeah. So anyway, so the movie Resident Evil, it starts out he's a c I mean what what's the correct word? Is it courier? Is it or someone speaker-1: He's a courier. He's a medical he's a medical courier, yeah. speaker-0: Medical courier. How does one get into the business of being a medical courier? speaker-1: I don't know, it's like ⁓ it's like DoorDash for body parts. I don't I don't know. speaker-0: As I was watching this movie, I'm like, okay, I I understand, but how do you get into that? I it's just it's kind of fascinating. That was more fascinating to me than anything else in the movie. Is how did he get this job? Like I and Well, somebody's gotta deliver the organs, right? I mean, I'm an organ donor, so someone's gonna have to deliver my organs if they go to someone else. I guess I never really thought about it speaker-1: Yeah. I guess yeah, I would you would think that that kind of thing would be done via ambulance or some type of like emergency. Yeah. I know like they they deliver ⁓ by helicopter. ⁓ if it's, you know, a far distance, then they'll air med it. Well, it's called Air Med where we live. ⁓ but they'll they'll fly it from one place to another great distances. I've seen that before. ⁓ I I don't know what speaker-0: That's what I always thought, yeah. speaker-1: I mean this guy just drove his got a got a got a ⁓ an igloo icebox thing and and put it in there and just drove it from one place to the other where it needed to be. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know how you get into that. That might be a good ⁓ retirement gig for me. speaker-0: Yeah, you're right. You're right. That might be something you can get into. But anyway, so that's what he does. He delivers organs and it starts off immediately with the what's the word? I mean, I don't want to say comic relief, but I mean it's comedy. They it starts off, he's kind of ⁓ I'm sorry. Oops, yeah. ⁓ can somebody help me? speaker-1: He's kinda he's a little bumbling. speaker-0: He's he's goofy, he's bumbling, he's just a normal dude, has no idea what's about to happen in about an hour. And ⁓ so very much with that. Yes, a reluctant hero. I was very much okay with the kind of with the comedy in the beginning, how ⁓ showing that he's a normal guy and how normal early twenty year olds are I mean lack for lack of better term, not smart because you know they haven't lived speaker-1: Reluctant reluctant hero. speaker-0: very much and experienced very much as an adult, so they kinda you know, do stupid things. We've all been there. speaker-1: And you and you also get the sense that he's kind of impulsive and immature because he's apparently going through something with his girlfriend where she's she's with child and I guess they're trying to decide on whether or not to keep the pregnancy and he's kinda like, ⁓ whatever, whatever you want to do, I don't I don't care. speaker-0: Well he's he's more of telling her what she wants to hear than wh how he really feels. Right. Type of thing. Right. ⁓ so anyway, so he takes the job. speaker-1: Like he d he hasn't put a lot of thought into it. Right. He just doesn't want to deal with it. speaker-0: Fix the job. He delivers, makes a delivery, then he takes a job and the nurse is like, Look, this is high prior top priority and you have to be re what is it, winter ⁓ speaker-1: When winter ready. Are you winter ready? speaker-0: Ready, meaning chains on your wheels and an all wheel drive vehicle because you're going into the mountains. speaker-1: Yeah, he's like I'm I've got a jacket. I've got layers. Yeah. speaker-0: Yeah. But then he's like, I got you covered. And of course he doesn't. He he has on he's driving a Subaru with regular tires. speaker-1: And he doesn't want to do it at first. He's trying to get home, but she tells him, Well, it pays double. So he's like, Yeah, I'll I'll take care of it. I'll do speaker-0: And why not? Seems easy enough, double the money. speaker-1: You just gotta go to Raccoon City to ⁓ deliver a mysterious package of medical importance. Yeah. What could what could go wrong? What could go wrong? In a vehicle not winter ready. Yeah, what could go wrong? speaker-0: ASAP. So this idiot starts in the next scene he's driving and I mean look, this is classic cinema. He can't see anything. He's looking every time they show show the POV, all you see is the headlights only about ten feet in front of him, and you can't see anything else. Or nothing's gonna pop up in front of him. speaker-1: Sliding all over the Right. Didn't see that coming. So yeah, he's like you s he's going down the road, going a little bit too fast, sliding all over the place, can't see but ten feet in front of him, and the thing that you expect is gonna happen is happens. He something is in the road and he smacks into it with his vehicle. And he doesn't know what it is at first, but we we get a pretty good view that it's ⁓ it was a lady. a a human being person walking across the street, walking across the road. speaker-0: And at this time is when you see the first nope in the movie. speaker-1: Mm-hmm. speaker-0: Would have just duced out. Yeah. I'm sorry. I there was a body there and then they got up and left after you just smoked them going how fast? I'm sorry. I'm not going look for speaker-1: Well, I think that's that all that's almost a moral conundrum. Like you he d I guess he didn't know what he hid at the time, but then he sees footsteps and a bunch of blood speaker-0: Dude, you're in a Resident Evil movie. You should know. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah, that's right. He must have forgot. He should evil movie. Yeah, I so I forgot about that. He went and looked and she was gone. He finds her like a little bit down a path in the woods. speaker-0: I mean he's in a frickin' residence. Like he he kept walking and I'm like, What are you doing? Don't speaker-1: Don't do it. But he did it. Obviously obviously she got up and walked away on her own power. Obviously she's okay. Go deliver your high priority medical device thing. Yeah. speaker-0: She probably has a cell phone, she's fine. speaker-1: She'll she'll be fine. She'll be fine. ⁓ speaker-0: Or she's not. He he gets there and she's like her arms are straight up or something like that. speaker-1: She's all decorticate. Yeah, she's all stiff. And he ⁓ of course he brings her to the to the car. speaker-0: This was the funniest part of the whole movie. He's he he's got he covered this zombie to keep her warm and then he puts her in the car and she looks dead and is like, Are you okay? Okay, I'm gonna get you some help. And she's just looking at him and that wa to me that was the funniest of the whole movie. speaker-1: Yeah, yeah. At some point he's gonna have to have some some situational awareness, some survival instinct to say, Hey I mean I guess the first thought the first thought someone's gonna go to is this is the beginning of a zombie apocalypse. I guess that shouldn't probably be the first thing that he goes to, but at some point you gotta realize that something as Tone Loke said, something ain't stirring the Kool Aid, man. speaker-0: Some start in the cool aim. speaker-1: So yeah, yeah. Yeah, he puts her in the car and he's on his way. I mean, he's going to a medical facility. I I guess I understand that line of thinking. You know? So they speaker-0: Gets pulled over by a police officer right after he leaves because he doesn't have chains on his tires. Right. This little interaction was funny because eventually he he talks the cop into you know the the officer realizes that there's something wrong with the lady. And he's like, Well, shouldn't she ride with you? And he's like, damn it. speaker-1: Yeah, okay. speaker-0: Now I can tell you, being a police officer for as long as I was, ain't no way that lady was riding in the front seat with me. Not happening. Right. Behind the cage where she can't get to me like everybody else. Right. speaker-1: So yeah, that's one of the things that I was like, okay, that's that's logical. That would have probably happened in that situation. You get pulled over to medical emergency, put her in your car, that all made a lot of sense. Yeah, she she goes in the backseat. Yeah. She goes in the backseat. speaker-0: He puts her in the front seat. And of course, after he takes off, she obviously attacks him, flips, ends up upside down. And now he's like, ⁓ crap. So now he's got to go check on the police officer and the lady in a wrecked vehicle. ⁓ and all of this stuff is I don't know. I was really into it at this point. Yes. Like I was very much vested. I was like, okay, here we go. This is gonna be. This is what I'm talking about. Let's get right to it. Not not wasting much time 'cause this is maybe what, fifteen minutes into the movie? speaker-1: Yeah yeah, it it got it got started pretty quick. There wasn't a whole lot of messing around. speaker-0: I think the movie's a little over an hour and a half, that's it. speaker-1: Yeah, about an hour, hour and thirty something minutes. And having having said that, backtrack a little bit. The ⁓ the look the movie looked awesome. ⁓ it looked great. Especially the the snow, the the white snow and everything else is dark and you got the police lights, the red and the blue flashing everywhere and a little bit later the stuff that happens in the snow and the outside and looked awesome and the sound was awesome. Like I'm not sure, I don't know where you saw it, but the sound of this movie was incredible. speaker-0: Yeah, we just went to the the fourteen. speaker-1: On Ambassador? speaker-0: Yeah, where Don that's where Donovan and I went. And so I'm thinking Santico's must have replaced some of the speakers and stuff because it's been a while since a movie sounded good in that theater. speaker-1: It was it was great. Like ⁓ again, I say it all the time, I don't normally notice that kind of stuff as much as you do, but it was immediately apparent that something was different because the the the look and the and especially the sound of it was was awesome. Was really good. speaker-0: It looked like a new projector because the the the screen was was great. I mean the ⁓ yeah the picture was great and the sound was good. So yes, it looked and sounded amazing. Absolutely. Okay was top notch. speaker-1: ⁓ Yeah. ⁓ so yeah, he yeah, anyway, the the officer crashes the car. ⁓ he's trying to rescue both of ⁓ and he can't find the the lady. I wonder I wonder why. Yeah. speaker-0: I wonder where she went weird. Yeah, so that whole little thing was funny. You know, he gets the officer he tries to call for help. Of course, it's all static y they can't hear him. She attacks. Yeah, there's no signal. Attacks. This whole little interaction is good. He he pulls the gun out. He doesn't know how to use the gun. She's chasing him around the the vehicle and all of it was it it and what was good about most of the movie was it was tense while being funny. speaker-1: Yeah, there's no signal. No. speaker-0: Like it didn't lose sight of the tension. It it kept you on your toes, even though it was being funny at the same time. speaker-1: I had a feeling that I never felt that the humor was out of place. It was it was just kind of naturally funny. I I at first. Well, yeah. And that's that's what I was gonna say. Like I have a feeling that as it went on it kind of wore on you, that that's gonna be one of your one your gripes. I I never I never really got that way. I always thought it was I th always thought it was well placed. ⁓ so ma maybe a little ex excessive at times, but anyway. Yeah. speaker-0: So what what happens next? ⁓ he runs, he shoots her, but he's running away from her shooting. And then when he gets back, he shoots her. Then when he gets to his car, realizes he shot the engine block. So now his car is useless. speaker-1: Uh-huh. And so Which comes back a little bit a little bit later. speaker-0: Yes, yes. Yeah. But I thought that was genius because you know, so many times that kind of stuff happens in movies and there's no consequence to the running away and shooting. Right. And in this one there was. He shot his own damn car while he was trying to shoot the the zombie. speaker-1: Now there's no escape. Yeah. He's gotta find another means. speaker-0: Conveniently there's a house. speaker-1: Well they yeah, they crashed in the middle of a field w on the other side of a fence there's a there's a house, a little a little farmhouse. A nice little quaint little farmhouse f ⁓ where he can go and call for help and find shelter. He's lucky for him speaker-0: And while he what happens? A nice canine puppy dog shows up. speaker-1: Well that's is that before or after he shocks the bejesus out of himself on that electrical fence? ⁓ He's trying to he's trying to pump prep himself, pump himself up to jump over and he still gets shocked speaker-0: He goes, Damn electricity. speaker-1: And then yeah, then he hears the which ⁓ and we're talking about the visuals earlier, the the wide shots of the snow and him in the field and like the the dog approaching, chasing after him, the dog dog's coming out the hound, whatever, comes out chasing after him. There's a couple of shots like that where it's just the white snow wide overhead shots. ⁓ there was another one where someone's running after him, ⁓ if I remember correctly. Just ⁓ another Another addition to the visual brilliance of the of the movie. speaker-0: ⁓ yeah, it was it was they they really did a good job. There's no doubt. The dog chases him and he runs to the barn and the dog gets in the barn. He go this was hilarious. He goes up the ladder and he's like, ⁓ I can use the ladder to get to the other side of the barn. So he does that. The dog's at the bottom, trying to get to him. And I'm like, okay, he's gonna use the ladder to go to now go out of the barn. Well, the fool throws the ladder at the dog. speaker-1: Well he used it. What is he doing? He used it to close the door so that the dog couldn't get out. He he he trapped the door, he trapped the dog in there. And he makes a comment like let's see you open the door or something like that. Yeah, he throws the ladder at the dog and realized, well, I couldn't use the door. speaker-0: Damn it, the ladder. So that felt very ⁓ Resident Evil game ish where he at this point he's trying to he's got he has obstacles and he has to solve puzzles to get out of said obstacles, which they do a few times in the movie. This was the first one. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah, and then he sees the another funny moment, he sees the hook and thinks, I'm gonna run and jump and grab the hook and the rope is going to glide me gently down. That's that's not what happens. Yeah, he hits the ground like a damn meteor. Yeah, that was that was really good. and then you realize that the dog is not what it seems. Yeah. speaker-0: It breaks his face through the the the the wall of the barn and then it's speaker-1: He starts kinda taunting speaker-0: Tentacles. Yeah, he's taunting it, then all kind of tentacles come out and it's like, ⁓ it's a monster. Yeah. speaker-1: Yeah, it's grabs him and he he ends up shooting it with the officer's gun and something ⁓ lots of throughout the movie lots of little nods to the game. and one thing that I went see it with Jacob and one thing that he noticed is that said it took four shots to to kill the dog and apparently in the games or in the game, ⁓ it takes like four shots to to kill all the dogs. So that's something that I don't know, he's some I might get fact checked, but ⁓ that's something that Jacob had noticed. So we're not. speaker-0: Been so long since I've played any Resident Evil game, I couldn't tell you. speaker-1: ⁓ very ⁓ very cool scene though, that that whole interaction. And then from there he goes into the house, right? The barn he goes into the house. speaker-0: And so that has Yep, he finds a phone, he calls his girlfriend, leaves a voicemail, ⁓ then he finds a shotgun. He can't find shot. speaker-1: Mm-hmm. But he upgraded his weapon. He had a pistol, and he upgrades to the shotgun. speaker-0: In true Resident Evil faction, he like pulls the shotgun off of the wall. speaker-1: Can't find rounds for it. What do you know? speaker-0: Right, 'cause you know, nobody keeps ammo, right? Y you would think a farmhouse out in the middle of nowhere, their shells are gonna be right next to the shotgun. I'm just speaker-1: Yeah. But anyway. Looking looking through drawers, nothing in the drawers. He looks in the refrigerator. Once again, a a true true Resident Evil fashion. There's always ammo or healing items hidden in the refrigerator. speaker-0: So he stops and gets something to drink. Like what if he's like eating cereal and then drinking the milk? speaker-1: Where you save all your save points, yeah. So yeah, he ends up ⁓ then he ends up upstairs and then that's when he sees the the lady or no. Wait, no, he sees the lady's guy. speaker-0: Not yet. He sees the lady coming. He's starting to he's trying to load the shotgun. Then the man comes out. speaker-1: Guy comes in, yeah. Yeah. And he attacks him. He kills the guy. And my my favorite part of the movie and the creepiest part of the movie, he's sitting in the corner, the guy's dead, he's trying to load the shotgun, and you hear the woman running through the house trying to find him. They don't show her, they don't show where she's at. You just hear her banging on walls and yelling and running up the stairs and it's just kinda his his point of view, looking at the door, waiting for her to come through the door. That was To me that was the the coolest coolest part of the movie and creepy as hell. speaker-0: And whenever she runs through the door, boom, he just blows her her head off. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah. But then it's but then it's not over. It's not over. speaker-0: Then some more Resident Evil stuff happens. The the two bodies combine like a tentacle his thing and it her thing and then like the two necks combined. The two right? Is that what happened? The two necks combined? speaker-1: Yeah, they It was like Yeah. Yeah, they made like a I don't it was gross. I don't know what you I don't know what you call it, but we do see it again a little bit later. speaker-0: And so as he's running out the house, you notice the picture, it's her, the husband and the dog. He's just encountered everyone from the house. Right. That was pretty speaker-1: And the dog. Yeah. And then he ⁓ he steals the truck. He gets the truck with the with the lock that's made out of adamantium apparently. speaker-0: ⁓ he wal he drives it to the lock, tries to shoot it, doesn't work. Then he's like, I'm just gonna ram it. Truck up and hit and I laugh. I think the whole theater burst out laughing and hit that damn fence and it didn't go anywhere. And then the key falls right out the car, right out the truck. speaker-1: Yeah it didn't it didn't work. Mm-hmm. Yeah, it was in the ⁓ in the visor. And then later that comes into play again with ⁓ with something else going on. Check the visor for the keys. Yeah. So I think speaker-0: The creature thing, the two people creature comes out of the door at this point. ⁓ but he started running. I now I'm having I'm drawing a blank. How did he escape this? He ran. speaker-1: He ran and I think that's when he found the tunnel but then the creature thing was in the tree line flipping and flopping and and kinda following him. I thought speaker-0: thing it was just the cause I thought it was more than one person on that creature thing. Like there was multiple people. But anyway he sees yeah, he sees a car coming. He flags him down and it's your boy. What's his name? speaker-1: ⁓ there might have ⁓ Cole ⁓ how not Cole Hauser. ⁓ how ⁓ Stingray from speaker-0: Some Walker Hauser. speaker-1: Yeah, why I all of a sudden I can't think of his name. Richard Jewel. Which everyone needs to watch. Paul Walterhauser, is that it? speaker-0: Paul Walter Hauser. So he it's it's him and this lady police officer chick. speaker-1: I'll say it again, I love that guy. I've never seen him in anything that he hasn't been just completely awesome. So yeah, they're they're from ⁓ they're from Raccoon City. Right. What does he well does he go through the tunnel before then? I think he goes through the tunnel before speaker-0: That's right. We had that's what it was. It was the tunnel sequence. That's right. We completely missed the tunnel sequence where he ends up in an R V and there's a little girl and she's like, Help me, my mom. speaker-1: The tunnel's blocked and he's gotta go through the R V to get through the tunnel. Yeah, and he noticed that she's got that tentacle stuff. speaker-0: Yeah, she had been bit by her mom, so she was turning into a creature. She attacks him and ends up biting him. He gets bit on the arm, so he shoots her in the face, escapes, and that's when he's out the end of the tunnel and he encounters the officer and the doctor, Paul Walterhauser. Yeah. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah, he gets bit on the arm. Yeah, that's what they should Yes, the scientist. and that's I I think coming up that they they get to the city, the ⁓ the lady, the agent, she's a badass, she gets out to deal with some zombies, and I think that's that's probably the part where the humor gets a little forced. Like it was inappropriate for the situation. speaker-0: Yeah. Paul Walter Howard, he was explaining what happened. He was like, so someone dropped it and we needed he's so you dropped it? It doesn't matter who dropped it. It was him that messed everything up. I enjoyed that part. But you're right. So after that, they end up in town, and she gets out of the vehicle to take care of some some zombies. And this is where you're right. The like, okay. speaker-1: Doesn't matter who dropped it. Yeah, it was it was all happening. Yeah. ⁓ speaker-0: It's it's fine, but every every line was a joke. And at this point I was starting to get annoyed. I'm like, okay, we're like thirty, forty minutes into the movie now, I'm getting pissed off. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah. And ⁓ it yeah, it was ⁓ like y a couple of ⁓ were okay, but it it every line was a joke and it got a little bit too much in that scene. I agree. speaker-0: Yeah, even after now the ha doing funny things is better than trying to be funny. So like every time he tried to grab the keys, they dragged the body a little bit further, you know. Yeah. But the the fun trying to be funny like the lines. Yeah. It it was like, Okay, stop with the jokes. I feel like I'm watching Spider-Man. Stop speaker-1: Yes. Yeah. speaker-0: You know, it was it was starting to get on my nerves. speaker-1: By this time we already know that that Paul Walterhauser's character is ⁓ is kinda a b a buffoon. You know. He doesn't have to he didn't have to keep making jokes. Like it it got serious at that point because she was their only protection and she ran off and she's probably dead. Like I don't know that they'd have been making jokes right there. What? speaker-0: He was trying to try to scare him. He was like, he looks at her, what is his name? Tina or something. He's like, shoot him. She's like, I'm not shooting him. Yeah. Like he was in charge or something. Yeah, yeah. But anyway, so even he so after he gets the key, or he doesn't get the key, he starts did he get the key? No. He starts to run back and Paul Walterhauser gets you know grabbed. He's being pulled away by a creature. And even then they were trying to make jokes. speaker-1: And the and right before that, another nod to the series, right before that he finds the MP five, he upgrades his weapon again from a shiny metal briefcase in the trunk of the car, which is your inventory system in the games, is usually a briefcase. ⁓ so yeah, and he's like he doesn't know how to work guns and he shoots it in the he shoots it in the car and like that stuff that stuff was kind of funny. Yes. But like after he leaves the vehicle. speaker-0: It's funny for actions to be funny. You know, it's good for actions to be funny, but constantly with the forced jokes was okay. At this point they're in like obvious life or death situations. They're he's pretty aware of what's going on. It's a science experiment gone bad. Like, would he really be making all these jokes? At this point, I I think it's it really should have started to taper off. And instead they just keep they just keep rolling with it the whole time, you know. speaker-1: Yeah. So yeah, ⁓ Paul Walterhauser gets killed by a big Tatai and then I think that's when he st he se he knows where he's gotta go. They kind of explain the plot to him and he's running towards the hospital and that's when the zombies on the roofs start falling. speaker-0: He gets chased through the alley a little bit, but yes, he has to 'cause he he encounters a a locked fence and has to get through it. He's being chased and you know, all of that stuff. And then he ends up underground. Remember they chase him underground and y that's where you see a big fat guy. That was cool. I mean speaker-1: Yeah, and he shoots them all up, but there's there's zombie rats. So they start to congeal again. Yeah. ⁓ speaker-0: And so he goes up, ends up in the street, and this is that probably the best scene in the whole movie. Yeah. Where the zombies were all on top of the ⁓ the roofs of the buildings. And he's he starts he just starts running and they start doing like limbings and jumping off of the buildings because there's you know they're stupid zombies. And speaker-1: Yeah yeah. Landing on cars, landing on the streets, yeah. speaker-0: Yeah, exploding as they hit the ground and stuff. speaker-1: Yeah, that was neat. I ⁓ when that little scene was over, Jacob and I both looked at each other like, Yeah, that was that was awesome. That was yeah. Yeah. So yeah, he he does that, ⁓ escapes a lot of close calls and then he gets to the the facility, I believe, where they're doing the experiments and ⁓ speaker-0: That's great. Once again, he has to find an alternate route to get in. Very Resident Evil like. Can't go in the front door full of zombies. Have to find another way in. speaker-1: Has to use one of his last bullets because ammo is very limited. Has to use one of his last bullets to shoot the lock to get into the ⁓ so I've had it with these effin padlocks. Has to shoot it to open the gate to get into the garage, finds an elevator, and of course the elevator does not work. And they Yeah, they're they're they're watching him on a camera and basically tell him you've gotta get this thing up to the twenty eighth floor. speaker-0: Why would it? Well, but right before that you you you skipped over the he starts to have a moment where he thinks it's over. He can't get in the elevator. He it's over. So he records a message to his girlfriend on his phone, basically saying, I've been f foolish, I've been selfish, I wasn't thinking about you. I wanna keep the baby. If you wanna keep you know, so he has like a this good little moment and starts crying. And that's like, Hey you speaker-1: He has a little a little redemption, yeah. Yeah, wasn't it like, hey you and he's like, Me? Who me? Like he's the only one there. Of course we're yeah, the dude crying. speaker-0: The dude crying, come here. Yeah. So they explained to him he has to get of course, of course, he has to go to the top floor. Right. The twenty-eighth floor. But it's not that simple. Take the elevator. And also when you get to the twenty-second floor, you have to crawl up go across the skywalk and then take the stairs up to the twenty-eighth floor on that side, because there's two separate buildings. Now, did you catch the nod to Ghostbusters? speaker-1: ⁓ besides for the st stair climbing, no. speaker-0: And it was the t I'm pretty sure it's the twenty second floor. Sho floor twenty two. speaker-1: ⁓ really? ⁓ no, I don't I don't remember. I don't remember. speaker-0: Could be wrong because remember, I think we're in the teens and Bill Murray goes, Well, let me know when we get to 20. I'm gonna throw. And then the way he looked up, I mean, it it looked a lot like so it may have been unintentional and I just caught it because I like Ghostbusters, but I don't know. It seemed a little too close to not be a nod to Ghostbusters. speaker-1: I'm gonna throw up. Yeah. Might have to do a little bit of research on that. speaker-0: So after what they make it look like he's climbing and climbing speaker-1: Yeah, they make it look like he's climbing forever. He gets to the fourth floor. speaker-0: I knew it too. I was like, he's gonna be on the second floor or something. He makes it to the fourth floor and he can't go anymore. He says F it and decides to take the elevator. speaker-1: Yeah. Peace out the stairwell. I'm taking my chances with the elevator, which turns out speaker-0: For sure. speaker-1: Yeah. I mean after all the stuff he's seen, yeah, you take you chance the elevator. speaker-0: 'Cause if you get to the top exhausted, you have nothing left to run from something chasing you. So I'm pretty sure I probably would have taken my chances on the elevator as well. speaker-1: Wasn't wasn't a ⁓ a ⁓ an unbelievable decision. Yeah. speaker-0: So this is a cool sequence. We have this vomiting zombie thing. I guess maybe that's taken from one of the games at some point. ⁓ but that was cool you could regurgitate and throw like this acid vomit. speaker-1: Yeah. Eating through the ⁓ eating through the elevator, then he it kinda eats it all away and then he jumps to another elevator and is going up, but lo and behold the the monster with all the different people rolled up into one starts climbing up the elevator shaft. speaker-0: And he uses the vomiting zombie, holds him over for his vomit to hit those zombies. So that was pretty neat. At this point he's starting to his survival skills have increased because he's been through it already. Yeah. And then he throws him down. So it's like, Okay, my boy's growing up. We got us a little we got us a little ⁓ coming of age story here, you know. speaker-1: Uh-huh. All the while we have to also remember that he was bitten, as you said, by the little girl and his his bite is starting to look a little gnarly. Starting to look like a normal bite doesn't do that. So ⁓ yeah, he's he's dealing with that also, which gives him more incentive to get this bag that he's still carrying, by the way. Yeah. Give this bag of medical supplies or whatever to these people 'cause hey, I'm gonna need it, I'm gonna need to be saved also. speaker-0: So he gets to the skywalk, cool little sequence. He only has one bullet left, makes the shot, all of that stuff. speaker-1: Yeah, he shoots the he had barred a door and the zombies are trying to get out and he remembers this when they were jumping off the buildings. So hey, if I shoot the the the piece of wood that I used or as a broom handle, if I shoot this, they're all gonna fall down, and that's what he does. He finally makes his shot and they all fall down like a waterfall of zombie bodies. Very, very cool, very cool scene. speaker-0: Zombie limbings. So he makes it across and they let him in and the guy who lets him in is the ⁓ the black guy that's in Fallout. He's in the Fallout series. He's one of the doctors. ⁓ once again speaker-1: Mm-hmm. One one other quick thing. The the skywalk is all obliterated and he's gotta kinda he's gotta like press X to shimmy across it. You know what I mean? Mm-hmm. Yeah. I thought that was that was kinda neat. So yeah, he he makes it across, he makes it to the lab. speaker-0: Doctors let it in. Of course there's more jokes and all of this stuff. And I'm like, come on, guy. I I just really wish they would have tapered off and a little a little more serious at the end and just make some of the actions funny instead of the constant trying to be funny stuff. I mean it was really killing me at this point because I really was enjoying the movie. And I had I had a good time overall, even to the very end. I I can say I really did enjoy the movie, but speaker-1: Tone it down a little bit. speaker-0: Man, it would have been so much better had they just ⁓ yeah, it was killing me. speaker-1: That took you out of it a little bit. The only scene the only scene that did that for me, I guess maybe a little bit at the end, but the only scene that really did that for me was with Paul Walterhauser and the truck. But it was it was a little misplaced, but having said that, it was genuine it was funny. Yeah. Like it it wasn't it's not like the jokes weren't landing. They were just a little out of place. Yeah. So what what speaker-0: Talk a little bit more about that after we get through the rest real quick. Yeah. So they have the little scene where they're trying to the he gives them the sample and they're making the antidote or whatever it is, the reversing all that stuff. So they're getting all that done. He's getting work because they're about to get in. They need to hurry up. Of course, they don't make it in time. speaker-1: Well he trans he transforms. speaker-0: Musters get in. speaker-1: No, I don't think I didn't think a monster got in. I think he he transformed and he started attacking him. Okay. Yeah. And he's trying to he's trying to stop it, but he can't. ⁓ the coolest probably the coolest kill in the movie when the guy's like he's hiding behind a desk and they're just talking, having a conversation, and he shoves the desk and it just splatters the guy against the Yeah, that was pretty cool. speaker-0: It was him transforming. speaker-1: ⁓ so yeah, he's trying to get the ⁓ you know, they're fumbling around with the syringe. It's ready, it just needs to be injected or whatever. And one by one. speaker-0: kills him and and he's fighting he's fighting the earth like he's fighting the monster the monster has like a mind of its own the monster within is grabbing the scientists and killing them but at the same time he's like give it to me stick me stick me because he's still there ⁓ and I really for some reason I thought that it was gonna happen that that last guy was gonna stick him and it would start to work but nope they I'm I'm glad they didn't speaker-1: No, it's not made. speaker-0: You know, I'm I'm I'm I'm always good for a surprise. He turns full on monster and speaker-1: Uhhuh. And Yeah, because he's taking all their like it shows him like he's eating them like his like through his chest and his stomach and yeah, all their limbs are flating around like they're becoming all part of this one big amalgamation thing, monster thing. ⁓ Yeah, well but before that they mentioned that the National Guard was coming. Mm-hmm. That they had called the National Guard, National Guards on their way. So yeah, he ends up on on top of the building or on top of the skywalk and ⁓ I think the last thing you see was the helicopters coming in and they zoom in on his face, his monster face and then scene. speaker-0: Screams and that's the movie. Yeah. So he is now I don't know if he's a monster from the games or something, maybe. Or is there something similar in one of speaker-1: There's been so many Resident Evil games and I've played I haven't played all of ⁓ I've played a lot of ⁓ And I feel like, yeah. I mean I know the tentacle things for sure is is from the games. the the monsters combining to create a big gross thing. I feel like that maybe made it into one or two of the games. I can't say for sure or not though. ⁓ it's been so long since I've played ⁓ I don't know. I don't know. speaker-0: So anyway, so I left the movie theater and with Donovan and I it was it was kind of shocking. I didn't really know how to think. And we were talking a little bit on the way home, and we both kind of agreed that it was the comedy kind of took us out of it. ⁓ that we wished that it would have tapered off. It it was not an issue for the first half of the movie. It really wasn't because it actually made a lot of sense. But once you get to the point where he really understands what's going on, it it it should have they should have toned it down. To me. ⁓ speaker-1: Mm-hmm. It would have been better for me. As things went on, it should have gotten more serious. And especially from even if not from him, but the other characters who definitely knew the seriousness of what was going on. ⁓ speaker-0: Well that brings my second my second gripe is Out of all of these video games and movies, even though the movies are terrible, the Umbrella Corporation has never been a bunch of bumbling idiot scientists. Yeah. And what we got was a bunch of idiot scientists. And that didn't that that just seemed wrong to me. ⁓ that they were all just stupid and you know what I'm saying? Like you always think of These straight laced scientists. You know what I'm saying? speaker-1: Didn't really seem to have control over the situation. speaker-0: Yeah, like yeah, I I just don't buy for a second that those types of people would be involved in this. It c that took me out of it as well. It's like how am I supposed to if they do it 'cause it's they left it open for a sequel, if they are they gonna go comedy again or would the second one be more serious in tone? speaker-1: Well, the way I look at that is that maybe they didn't really know what they were dealing with and then when it got out of hand it got out of hand so fast and it was more like panic reactions. I I don't know. And I can see that too. I see your I see your point. I see your point. ⁓ speaker-0: But they also didn't go into and maybe I just don't remember, but what were they studying? What did did they go into it at all or no? Cause he said, you know, Paul starts to s he starts to spit out so much stuff. It happens so fast. And they were making so many jokes that you I think I may have missed what exactly they were studying and doing that got out of control. speaker-1: Yeah. They maybe did and it was it was brief. I I don't I can't pinpoint it either. I don't exactly remember. speaker-0: See that's two of us that watched it that missed it, so they're not really getting their point across. So I I kind of you know, that's another ding for me. I it's just for a movie that was had so much potential and well done for what it was, he definitely missed the mark to me in a few different areas, and those are the areas like there's no good explanation. It it I don't like. A bunch of idiots running the show and and all of that. And then just the comedy was just a little too much. Yeah, because you know, you always think of Umbrella as this, they have their stuff together, they're doing this research, and it goes awry by an accident, but not by a bumbling idiot. Yeah, you see what I'm getting at? It just kind of takes it out for me. speaker-1: Yeah, 'cause they're And and that's I think what it was it was Paul Walterhauser, he dropped I think the thing that he was delivering, they had one and that's what he dropped. Is that is that what happened? He didn't cause he didn't cause the outbreak, he just caused them to not be able to stop it. As as yeah. speaker-0: Yes, they so whatever To not be able to stop because he's a bumbling idiot. But then all those other scientists that were there, they were idiots too. speaker-1: I mean they weren't they didn't they didn't seem to they didn't seem to have it under control. speaker-0: And and if you're if you're working with something that dangerous, you know their protocols would be so tight. I I don't know. It just it just seems weird. And maybe I'm too much into it. Maybe he said, you know, we're just we're gonna make a horror comedy and that's just what we're gonna do because nothing else works. Then I guess okay, I'll have to live with it. But ⁓ that's not what we were sold. Like we it wasn't the trailer showed that it would be a little bit of comedy, but not that much. speaker-1: Yeah. Well I don't know. Look, having having said all that, I walked out of the theater extremely satisfied. I I loved it. I I really, really enjoyed it. speaker-0: I will be purchasing because I want to see and hear what it looks like in here. Yeah, I mean, look, just because we have or somebody has a gripe about a movie doesn't mean they didn't like I enjoyed the movie. I just ⁓ wish they would have gone a different direction in certain parts of it. And to me, it would have gone from like an eight to maybe even a ten. Like I'm telling you, had he the things that I have issues with, had he not done that. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah. Yeah. speaker-0: I may have given this a ten just because of I mean, it made me jump like three times and movies don't make me jump, you know. speaker-1: Yeah. Kinda kinda struggled for you it kinda struggled with its identity a little bit. speaker-0: Man, great, great assessment. That's that's what I was looking for. It struggled with its identity of what it wanted to be. I didn't know what the movie wanted to be. Yeah. Because it was so well done in the tension and the ⁓ the special effects, the acting, the directing, all of that was so good. The pacing was great. I love look, get us in and out, you know? I just wasn't I wasn't prepared for it to be that comical. speaker-1: Mm-hmm. Yeah, as it went on. Yeah. speaker-0: So I'm curious to see what my opinion's gonna be when I watch it a second time, whether I get more annoyed, or if I'm like, you know what, maybe it wasn't that big a deal. So but I I I won't be able to tell you that till I watch it again. speaker-1: Yeah. And and I'm with you. Day one purchase. I will be definitely getting it to to watch it at home. ⁓ as you say, especially for the for the audio and the visual, it's it's gonna be ⁓ a a day one, day one pre order purchase for sure. Yep. On VHS. All right. speaker-0: Well, anything else there, Nicholas? And before we go any further, what what do you give it out of ten? I give it I'm gonna say an eight because I had so much fun with it, but I really wanna give it a seven on a technical side if I'm being like unbiased, but because I did have a good time, I'll give it an eight out of ten. speaker-1: ⁓ Yes. Very, very no questions asked. Strong eight from me. Okay. ⁓ maybe maybe a little higher, but minimum minimum eight. Definitely. Okay. Yeah. outside of that, I today actually just today watched Backrooms. it's on HBO. I'd heard all kind of stuff about it. Came out. Did it come out around the same time as as Obsession? I know the stories were speaker-0: They were in the theater at the same time I think. speaker-1: Yeah. And then the stories of how, you know, they were kinda YouTube sensations kind of thing. They were kind of similar similar stories. ⁓ and this is another this is something that Jacob has seen at the movies and really he went to see it with with ⁓ his grandfather and his grandfather really liked it, as well as Jacob really liked it. So I was like, Okay, I gotta give this a shot. I had no history whatsoever on the YouTube videos or the game or whatever it is. Yes. No prior knowledge whatsoever, hadn't didn't know who was in it, didn't know what was about what it was about. ⁓ so anyway, we we watched that today. And you you have seen it, right? ⁓ Ups and Downs. I loved the visuals, the the audio and that, like the when they're actually going through the backrooms, the muted sounds and everything and the seeing stuff but you're not sure if that's what you saw, stuff moving far away in the background and the shadows. I love that that part of it. the actor, I'm I'm gonna butcher his name. but he's been in a lot of stuff. Let me find Chu Chuotel Afor. I I'm probably not saying that correctly. The the guy that plays the main guy, the the the guy that owns the ⁓ the furniture store, he was awesome. Like I've seen him in a million things, and he's I don't know if I've ever seen him in something that I liked him in as much as this. He was great. I thought the doctor, the the psychiatrist did a really good job, never had seen her before. but man, I found myself getting very bored like several times and also just not really knowing what the hell was going on. and after the movie ended yes after the movie ended I I had to get online and try to look up the explanation to the plot and after I did that I still don't know what the hell went on. so speaker-0: Tell you the only part of the movie I really liked was the found footage part when they were recording. And what is that? What is that? And you see just the shadow of what ended up being the big pirate guy. ⁓ all of that stuff. But you didn't know what it was, you thought it was just this big old creature. All of that was great. Like I remember being, ⁓ God, ⁓ during that part. Aside from that. speaker-1: Yeah. speaker-0: I didn't really enjoy it. ⁓ I did enjoy the performances. I thought it was neat. It was neat to watch something kind of different. But ⁓ speaker-1: It was different. and and very very speaker-0: Not really understanding what was going on and still no explanation. I just, you know, movies like that don't do it for me. Like you gotta tell me at least for the most part. speaker-1: A little bit of something. And someone watching this might say, ⁓ these dumbasses didn't get it. Yeah, maybe so. ⁓ that maybe so. ⁓ that's okay. I'm okay with it. ⁓ speaker-0: And I'm not saying it's a bad movie. I've seen movies that's not a bad movie. speaker-1: No, no. No, no. It was very well done. Like I said, visually striking, ⁓ the stuff when he's when they're just kind of walking around in the back rooms and you're not knowing what it was tense as hell. Like I didn't know speaker-0: Like ⁓ but once you see the big pirate guy thing and and I I just it got I I guess that part of it just got a little weird for me and I just didn't get it. But I was very intrigued. I was like, what the hell is going on? speaker-1: The tension kinda stopped after that. Like when it's chasing the doctor, ⁓ that that wasn't that wasn't very tense at all. It was just all the stuff before like he's walking in these big giant rooms or looking down these big giant halls and nothing's happening and you're waiting for something to happen, but nothing's happening. That was that was very, very tense. and I I don't know, I I I feel like I might have wanted to doze off a couple of times. speaker-0: Well, there's no doubt. I'm pretty sure I was like scrolling my phone that I'd have to make myself pretty fast movie. speaker-1: Yeah. And it's and it was because it's not bec it's not for me, it wasn't that it was because the stuff going on in the stream wasn't interesting. It's because I didn't know what was going on. Like I didn't know how it related to the to the story. Like what the hell's going on? It's neat to look at, it's it's tense, but what what am I looking at? so yeah, I'll I didn't not like it. But I'll I don't think I'll watch it again. speaker-0: No, it's it's gonna be a no for me dog. Like I I don't I don't care enough to even really want to watch it again and figure out or have an opinion about what it's just it's an okay movie to me and if you enjoy it, more power to you. I I will not fault you for liking it. I just it just didn't work for me. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. ⁓ Well did you watch it? ⁓ did you watch it on HBO or you watched it some other way? speaker-0: I watched it some other way. speaker-1: Some other way. So on HBO, it ⁓ after the credits roll, they have another like fifteen, twenty minutes worth of of the found footage stuff. And I think I guess that's what started it all, the stuff that was on YouTube or Reddit or whatever it was, the original stuff. And I like I by the time it was over, I wasn't even like I skimmed through it. I I just kind of fast forwarded through all that stuff just to kind of general idea. But what it was, it was the three Like the three scientist guys I guess were in the backrooms and were studying it and trying to figure out what it was and then at the end the I guess the end of that was the beginning of what we saw at the beginning of the movie. speaker-0: So is it supposed to be like a wormhole or something? speaker-1: Sure. I have no idea. Yeah. I I I don't I really don't know. I really don't know. The guy explains that they were they made ⁓ R I machines and then they found I I don't I don't know. I don't know. yeah. I don't know. speaker-0: And I get why it was a big deal because it was something different and well done coming from a YouTuber. I get it. ⁓ I'll ⁓ yeah, it's a no for me. I won't be buying it or 'cause I I just don't care if I ever watch it again, you know. speaker-1: Yeah. Right. Glad I watched it. Don't need to see it again. speaker-0: Resident Evil, good movie. speaker-1: Go, go see. Definitely go see it. speaker-0: The only thing I can tell you is just well people I'm sh I'm sure if you watch this review you've already seen it. But if you're gonna suggest it to other people, just tell them, look, just go along for the ride. Treat it as if it's just a another horror comedy. Because if you if you think you're getting a traditional Resident Evil movie, that's not what you get in. speaker-1: And it's not something you have to sit back and think about and figure out. They they give you enough. They give you everything you need. Just sit back and enjoy it. And that's that's how I took it in and I I really, really, really liked it. Yeah. speaker-0: Cool. All right. Well, like, subscribe, tell your friends, and we'll catch you all in the next one. speaker-1: See
