- 0:26Speaker 2: Mike, how are you?
- 0:28Speaker 3: Doing well. How are you?
- 0:29Speaker 1: Doing fantastic. Excited about week two here in the NFL.
- 0:34Speaker 1: We'll go back to Detroit and look ahead, but let
- 0:36Speaker 1: me just start in the immediacy. Chris Alave, Chase Young
- 0:39Speaker 1: added to the injury report on Thursday. How concerned, if
- 0:42Speaker 1: at all, should we be about this?
- 0:45Speaker 3: Well, the intel we've gotten on both of them is
- 0:48Speaker 3: more precautionary than majorly concerning. So hopefully they'll be back
- 0:54Speaker 3: at practice tomorrow and all the fires will be put
- 0:57Speaker 3: out and all that But the two names of those
- 1:01Speaker 3: two players, as concerning as it gets, I think you'd
- 1:05Speaker 3: say those two guys and Tyler Shuck, that's kind of
- 1:09Speaker 3: the whole deal right there. They better be healthy.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Let's go back to Detroit.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I think everyone agrees, love the decision to go for two.
- 1:19Speaker 1: No one has a problem there with it. It's all
- 1:22Speaker 1: been rehashed at this point. But as you break down
- 1:24Speaker 1: the game and get removed further from it, Did you
- 1:26Speaker 1: come out of that game feeling better or worse about
- 1:29Speaker 1: any player or position?
- 1:32Speaker 3: Well, yeah. I mean, I had said that night right
- 1:36Speaker 3: after the game that I think the atrociousness of the
- 1:39Speaker 3: first 35 minutes almost stuck with me even more than
- 1:43Speaker 3: the comeback because it was so bad that we were
- 1:48Speaker 3: comparing it to the Ian Book COVID game.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Oh, God.
- 1:51Speaker 3: That we had not seen a performance that bad in
- 1:53Speaker 3: so long. But obviously... being able to come back from
- 1:57Speaker 3: that and make all the plays that they made are
- 2:00Speaker 3: so encouraging. And then when you look at it in
- 2:03Speaker 3: the lens of you expect a team to be their
- 2:06Speaker 3: sloppiest in the first half of the entire season, especially
- 2:10Speaker 3: after they, like many other teams, don't play in the
- 2:13Speaker 3: preseason and you don't get to scout what the opponents
- 2:17Speaker 3: have in store for you and they were not prepared
- 2:19Speaker 3: for the Lions to blitz as much as they blitzed.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Took them a while to adjust to that. And then
- 2:24Speaker 3: to make the adjustments they made for Tyler Shuck to
- 2:28Speaker 3: play the way he played. I mean, it was the
- 2:31Speaker 3: most encouraging thing about this team last year. It remains
- 2:33Speaker 3: the most encouraging thing about this team is that they
- 2:36Speaker 3: have a quarterback you can win because of. And he
- 2:41Speaker 3: fell just short in this game, obviously. But you can
- 2:45Speaker 3: be down 21-0 in the third quarter and be like, well,
- 2:48Speaker 3: I'm not leaving my seat because they have a quarterback
- 2:50Speaker 3: who can bring them back from that. That's obviously very encouraging.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Was there anything defensively?
- 2:56Speaker 1: Because you can look and look at 31 points, but Mike,
- 2:59Speaker 1: they gave up two drives, the second drive of the
- 3:01Speaker 1: game and then overtime. It was really the only sustained
- 3:03Speaker 1: drives they gave up. Where should I feel better about
- 3:08Speaker 1: the defense coming out of it?
- 3:09Speaker 2: It's a tough road environment. It's a really good team.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I was encouraged by the defense.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, really dynamic offense, too. I mean, obviously, Jameer
- 3:18Speaker 3: Gibbs had his moments, and Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry
- 3:22Speaker 3: will have their moments this week. Amon Russite-Brown didn't really,
- 3:28Speaker 3: you know, he obviously did well enough, but he didn't
- 3:31Speaker 3: take the top off of him. So I'd say the discipline,
- 3:35Speaker 3: you know, not giving up free one-play drives, not having breakdowns,
- 3:40Speaker 3: not having that kind of stuff is really encouraging. Kool-Aid McKinstry,
- 3:44Speaker 3: Jonas Sanker, guys that you needed to see hold up
- 3:47Speaker 3: against what was going to be one of their toughest
- 3:50Speaker 3: matchups of the entire season as far as the firepower
- 3:52Speaker 3: they have in their passing game. I think that's encouraging.
- 3:56Speaker 3: You know, not perfect, but that's going to be one
- 3:59Speaker 3: of their toughest tests. And I'd say it was a
- 4:02Speaker 3: positive for their performance coming out of that game, for sure.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Did you think Daniel Carlson would make the kick?
- 4:10Speaker 3: I definitely thought it was possible, but he had made
- 4:15Speaker 3: a 60-yarder in his very last kick, which is funny
- 4:19Speaker 3: for the Raiders. But, I mean, that is a lot
- 4:21Speaker 3: to ask. I would say, what, 40% chance of going
- 4:25Speaker 3: in or something like that? I have no idea.
- 4:27Speaker 2: You would know.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I have no idea either.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Okay. I don't know if you knew a metric or
- 4:30Speaker 2: something like that. What are the odds of actually making
- 4:32Speaker 2: that kick?
- 4:33Speaker 3: That's what my gut tells me, but I don't even
- 4:35Speaker 3: know if that's overshoot. I mean, nowadays, 62-yard field goals
- 4:39Speaker 3: are nothing, right? Or so we were led to believe.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Kind of. I mean, just relative to history for sure.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 4:46Speaker 1: AI says 28% to 31% chance based on historical conversion rates.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, new history. I don't know. If you
- 4:54Speaker 3: really want to nail that database point, you can probably
- 4:58Speaker 3: only go back like two years. It's like a whole
- 5:00Speaker 3: new world of kickers.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Mike Triplett, he's at Mike Triplett, NewOrleans.football, NewOrleans.football. Okay, I
- 5:06Speaker 1: love that you talked about the firepower thing. in Detroit
- 5:09Speaker 1: because the firepower in Baltimore might be extinguished a bit
- 5:13Speaker 1: based on what happens with Zay Flowers, and we know
- 5:15Speaker 1: that Kobe Lane is out for this game.
- 5:18Speaker 2: I know you don't cover.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Baltimore per se, but how good is that passing game
- 5:25Speaker 1: without those two guys?
- 5:28Speaker 3: I mean, Zay Flowers was a monster last week. It
- 5:32Speaker 3: felt like the entire first half of the Saints game,
- 5:34Speaker 3: my Twitter feed was just a new Zay Flowers highlight.
- 5:40Speaker 3: So obviously if he is not 100% or if he's
- 5:44Speaker 3: not playing at all, that helps the Saints. But it's
- 5:48Speaker 3: also Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry, two-time MVP Lamar Jackson, now
- 5:54Speaker 3: healthy and playing in an offense led by, even though
- 5:59Speaker 3: he's young, Declan Doyle is bringing some Ben Johnson and
- 6:02Speaker 3: Sean Payton elements to an offense that was already pretty good.
- 6:05Speaker 3: led by Atlanta's former offensive line coach running that outside
- 6:10Speaker 3: zone scheme that's been so good for the Falcons. I mean,
- 6:12Speaker 3: it's a dangerous offense, even if you're replacing the receivers,
- 6:16Speaker 3: no doubt about it.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Did you go to Baltimore the last time the Saints
- 6:20Speaker 2: were there? It was 2018. I had to look it up.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Were you there?
- 6:24Speaker 3: I don't. believe I was. And I'm trying to remember
- 6:28Speaker 3: why I wasn't, I should have been there.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Have you been, do you remember going there?
- 6:32Speaker 3: I have been to Baltimore.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Okay. What's it like?
- 6:36Speaker 1: Uh, cause I looked up the saints have played Baltimore
- 6:38Speaker 1: five times. It's just not a very car in Baltimore.
- 6:42Speaker 1: I should say five times. It's just not a very
- 6:44Speaker 1: common trip they make. What is it like that, that
- 6:48Speaker 1: you remember anyway, but being there playing there?
- 6:52Speaker 3: You know, it's funny. I'm picturing a Jimmy Graham breakout
- 6:55Speaker 3: moment despite a loss one of the times I was there. Look,
- 7:00Speaker 3: it's a tough place to play because it's a road
- 7:06Speaker 3: environment against a really, you know, physical, tough team usually.
- 7:10Speaker 3: I mean, traditionally they've been a team that'll punch you
- 7:12Speaker 3: in the mouth, their defense and their offensive line. So
- 7:17Speaker 3: it's always the matchup that has stood out to me
- 7:19Speaker 3: more than the environment. I don't know that there is
- 7:23Speaker 3: anything specific about the stadium that makes it a reputation
- 7:27Speaker 3: like Seattle or Kansas City has. Obviously, there's weather elements
- 7:30Speaker 3: sometimes when you play there. They get to avoid that
- 7:32Speaker 3: this week. But anytime you do go to a place
- 7:37Speaker 3: you're not used to going, this is more conversational or
- 7:44Speaker 3: anecdotal than it is hard evidence. But when you're out
- 7:48Speaker 3: of your element, And there's an unfamiliarity. I mean, it's
- 7:50Speaker 3: not the same as going to Tampa or Atlanta or
- 7:52Speaker 3: Carolina where you know exactly what to expect. When you
- 7:55Speaker 3: go to these places only once every eight years, I
- 7:57Speaker 3: think it is a hard place to play. I do
- 7:59Speaker 3: know the last time they went there, it became the
- 8:03Speaker 3: 32nd team Drew Brees ever beat. It was the last
- 8:06Speaker 3: one to cross off his list. So not an easy task.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Beat him in 2018 there at Baltimore. By the way,
- 8:12Speaker 1: the game you were talking about, December 19, 2010. Ravens
- 8:15Speaker 1: beat the Saints 30-24. Jimmy Graham on the day. Five
- 8:20Speaker 1: catches for just 29 yards, but two touchdowns in that ballgame.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Yeah, and he was brand new. He was a rookie
- 8:26Speaker 3: that year, and they had not been using him a
- 8:27Speaker 3: lot until that moment. That was kind of his breakthrough.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Good memory.
- 8:32Speaker 1: What do you think about the– what is the matchup
- 8:35Speaker 1: Sunday for the Saints against the Ravens that you think
- 8:38Speaker 1: will decide it for New Orleans if they're able to
- 8:40Speaker 1: keep this close, give themselves a chance to win it?
- 8:43Speaker 3: It's discipline on defense. This is what I'm writing about today.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry are dangerous in and of themselves,
- 8:53Speaker 3: but the main thing that you have to do is
- 8:55Speaker 3: not let them get in your head too much. Try
- 8:58Speaker 3: to still rush the passer and actually get to him
- 9:01Speaker 3: without worrying about hanging back because you're too worried about
- 9:09Speaker 3: giving up a rush lane. Can you still be yourself?
- 9:13Speaker 3: and play your game against guys that, that can hit
- 9:16Speaker 3: home runs at any given time. I mean, it's generic
- 9:18Speaker 3: to say Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry, but it's, they'll
- 9:21Speaker 3: get in your head as much as they'll, they'll hit
- 9:23Speaker 3: home runs against you.
- 9:24Speaker 1: It turns out Derrick Henry ended up having a pretty
- 9:26Speaker 1: good career. It's pretty, pretty good. I mean, it really is.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I mean, I would not have, I mean, I understood
- 9:35Speaker 1: why Derrick Henry at Alabama worked. He's a, he's a
- 9:38Speaker 1: linebacker playing running back and he could run over college guys.
- 9:41Speaker 1: I wasn't sure that would work in the NFL, but
- 9:43Speaker 1: my goodness has he been. I mean, he's a Hall
- 9:44Speaker 1: of Famer. He's been incredible.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Yep. Tall, tall task for New Orleans.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Where would you put a percent chance, Mike, on the
- 9:52Speaker 1: Saints actually going and getting this done in Baltimore? Feel
- 9:54Speaker 1: better about it than because of how it went in Detroit?
- 10:01Speaker 3: I guess I have to feel better because of the
- 10:05Speaker 3: ability they showed to score points. I mean, if you
- 10:07Speaker 3: can score points, if your quarterback can throw for 400 yards,
- 10:11Speaker 3: you can win any game. I'll feel a lot better
- 10:15Speaker 3: if Chase Young and Chris Olave are on the field tomorrow.
- 10:19Speaker 3: But I think I'm almost going to predict pretty much
- 10:23Speaker 3: the exact same score I predicted last week. I'm probably
- 10:25Speaker 3: going to predict Baltimore to win by four or five
- 10:27Speaker 3: points just playing the percentages and playing the odds. But
- 10:31Speaker 3: I'll use that 40% chance again. I mean, I think
- 10:34Speaker 3: the Saints have a 40% chance of winning, so they
- 10:36Speaker 3: could do it. I do think they are rightfully the
- 10:39Speaker 3: underdog in.
- 10:40Speaker 2: This game, though. 40% of the time? It works every time.
- 10:44Speaker 3: That's my big... That's my big, I love to make
- 10:48Speaker 3: fun of weathermen, and that's going to become my new thing.
- 10:51Speaker 3: The Saints have a 40% chance. If you say 40% chance,
- 10:55Speaker 3: it sounds like, oh, he predicted the Saints were going
- 10:57Speaker 3: to make the playoffs. He said 40% chance, even though
- 11:00Speaker 3: I'll be less than 50% chance. You're really right either
- 11:03Speaker 3: way if you go that way.
- 11:05Speaker 1: For whatever it's worth, ESPN Analytics says the matchup predictor
- 11:07Speaker 1: of the Saints have 23.8% chance to win.
- 11:11Speaker 3: I'm taking the over on 23.8. I like your over.
- 11:14Speaker 1: He's Mike Triplett, neworleans.football, neworleans.football.
- 11:18Speaker 2: You can get him at Mike Triplett. Good enough to
- 11:20Speaker 2: visit with us Thursday. Thanks, man.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Thank you.
