- 1:57trip away from the world of politics. And most news, and time to
- 2:00focus on some sort of fun stuff not maybe not so serious, and a
- 2:05gardener standing by next with her a DoPT me please put it the week from
- 2:07the Canneal Charleston, Newmaine Association, doctor Casey Sachs, herself a former guest
- 2:12toast on Friday, Funalis is here. Plus we're gonna get a visit from
- 2:15the Toastmaster Rod Blackstone talking about what's going on with this Lango law light,
- 2:20the night over at Gomart Ballpark. All that and more coming up. Plus
- 2:24your calls and text are welcome. Of course, the big story of the
- 2:28news is last night three of the four leading candidates for governor met to up
- 2:31in Morgantown in debate discussion If you will, moderated by Hoppy Kirchwell, we're
- 2:36gonna I'm not gonna touch on it so much on this show, but I
- 2:38will next hour because I'm gonna be on talk line with Hoppy talking about that
- 2:40next hour. My guest toast this week. You know him, you love
- 2:44him. You watch him on WOWK TV thirteen news. He's super talented.
- 2:47Pat Simon, Good morning, sir, how are you, Dave? I
- 2:51am great, It's great. To be here. It's a Friday morning.
- 2:53I cannot believe I'm on my third cup of coffee right now, So I'm
- 2:55ready, ready to go, Pal, Ready to go. We're gonna get
- 2:59into talking Pat Simon about your career, about what you got going on over
- 3:02WWK TV thirteen. Plus you get to do the always popular ten questions.
- 3:07That's what I heard, and I told you in the green room that every
- 3:12answer to those questions will be ice cream, Every possible one will be ice
- 3:16cream. Well, that should be interesting. Let's go to our good friend
- 3:21Hannah Gardner from the Canal Charles, you made association with this week's Adopt Me
- 3:23Please Pat of the Week. Hannah, good morning, How are you?
- 3:28I'm great? How are you? I'm doing fine, Hannah, Pat Simon,
- 3:30Pat Simon, Hannah Gardner, Hey Hannah. Hello. Hell that's that's
- 3:36kind of her signature. Hello. I got it. She's cool that way,
- 3:40all right. So we have a picture posted as we always do for
- 3:44Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week. It's posted on Dave Island Radio,
- 3:46on Facebook and at dave a Actually it saw the Dave Alan Show on Axe
- 3:51Artists formally known as Twitter our Dog. This week's name is Cash, So
- 3:55Hannah take it from there. Tell us all about Cash. Yeah, well
- 4:00Cash. He is a goofy looking guy. He's very he's very very cute,
- 4:09very very playful. He's got a lot of energy. He it's I
- 4:15mean, I couldn't really tell you what he is. I mean, he
- 4:17looks like he's got like Boxer mixed in there, but I don't know what
- 4:21else he'd be mixed with. He's around fifty to sixty pounds I think,
- 4:28maybe sitting at like fifty five even, I think is what it was.
- 4:31But he is fixed already, so he's ready to go home. He's got
- 4:36his vaccines, he's good to go on all that, and he is microchipped,
- 4:41as are all the animals that come through our doors. But he came
- 4:46in actually as a surrender, I believe. Well, originally he came in
- 4:53as astray, but he got adopted but the landlord didn't allow them to have
- 4:57it, so they had to bring him back. So no fault of his
- 5:00own. But we do know from him being out and about that he is
- 5:06kind of an escape artist. He does like to get out and venture and
- 5:12have fun. So maybe a person with a good fence or a good backyard
- 5:16or something for him to run around and get all that energy out would be
- 5:20amazing for him. He looks like a prankster too, which I find this
- 5:26just so fun to see his picture, Hannah, And so take a certain
- 5:30type of owner, like you were mentioning with Cash, because he looks like
- 5:34someone with a lot of energy, right, yep, yep. He definitely
- 5:38has a lot of energy, and he prefers female dogs over male dogs just
- 5:44in general. So if you do have a male dog, of course we
- 5:46would recommend a meet and greet. You can bring your dog up to the
- 5:50shelter and do a meet and greet with Cash, or if you have female
- 5:55dogs, he definitely prefers female dogs, so he would love a good play
- 6:00may I'm sure if it's a female that's that's for sure. He's definitely got
- 6:03a lot of energy to run out, so it'd be a good idea.
- 6:06Now you guys are in the middle there at the shelter hand of something called
- 6:10the twenty five Days of Dog muss. I was looking about that on the
- 6:14looking around on your Facebook page about that? What is that and exactly how's
- 6:17it going? So basically they are just posting a dog every day and telling
- 6:26you a little bit about just to try to help get them adopted for the
- 6:30twenty five days of Christmas. And it's just a dog mess version, so
- 6:34that way everybody can learn a little bit more about each dog that we have.
- 6:38And they kind of put the spotlight on the ones that maybe need a
- 6:43spotlight just because they're not getting much attention or something. And most of the
- 6:46posts on there will tell you about their dogs friendly or people friendly or kids
- 6:51friendly, or how much they weigh and stuff like that, kind of like
- 6:55how I do on this show. But just in writing, well, it's
- 7:00great work that you guys are are doing up there. Now. Next Friday
- 7:04the fifteenth, one week from the day, there's something called the I was
- 7:08again reading this and by the way, whoever does your el Facebook page,
- 7:12you'd do a fantastic job with all your social media. There's something called the
- 7:15Tito's Vodka Jingle Brawl. I'm in on the brawling part of the vodka typical
- 7:23typical radio guy or typical media guys, as best I understand, the bars
- 7:29down in this part of the state, several of them are going to be
- 7:30facing off against bars in the northern part of the date now our local bars,
- 7:34Sam's Uptown Cafe, Bar, One Oh One, the Blue Parrot,
- 7:36Whiskey Glasses, and Venos. It's sort of a fundraiser for you guys up
- 7:42there do Umane Association. What can you tell us about it? Yeah,
- 7:45so I believe they've done They did something like this last year if I'm thinking
- 7:49right, I know they did somewhat of like a bar crawl. But basically,
- 7:56yeah, I believe most or some of the donations to help us out
- 8:01as well as I think there's going to be like you can wear your Christmas
- 8:07letters, you can kind of just go around with everyone and and go to
- 8:11all the different bars, and it's pretty much I believe if you want,
- 8:13you can like volunteer to help out with it. Even but I personally don't
- 8:18know too much about it, but it is on our Facebook. It is
- 8:22supposed to be Lost of Fun. I know they did something similar to it
- 8:24last year. Very fine. That's off of those local bars in this part
- 8:28of the stay and the ones up north for getting involved in that. As
- 8:31we close. What are you in need of now? As we head into
- 8:33the winter. Each each week you tell us that your need of something up
- 8:37there at the shelter because sometimes people want to help out animal causes, but
- 8:41they live in a situation where they can't adopt a pet. They you know,
- 8:43they they rent, or maybe their yards not big enough, or maybe
- 8:48you know there's they have too many animals, like in your case, Annah,
- 8:50too many already. What can people do to help out? What are
- 8:54you in need of? Yeah, so of course we need donations. I
- 9:00know that we could always use some puppy pads, some paper towels, some
- 9:03trash bags, some cleaning supplouds, stuff like that. But I know that
- 9:09we could use some gloves and stuff too. Blankets and sheets and towels are
- 9:13always always accepted. We absolutely always need those. But if you can't donate,
- 9:20or if you can't adopt, of course, we always loved having volunteers
- 9:24to come out. We have plenty of different areas for people to help volunteer
- 9:28in, to come on out and help us get everybody adopted. All right,
- 9:33Hannah, as always a pleasure to have you on the show. We'll
- 9:35talk again next week. Thanks a lot, Thank you, Thanks Hannah.
- 9:39And somebody going adopt cash yes, okay, And we got the picture posted
- 9:43as always. Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and at the Dave Allen Show on
- 9:46ex The artist will be known as Twitter. Cash is two years old,
- 9:50newter, microchip vaccinated. He was a surrender due to landlord issuess. Apparently
- 9:54he was adopted from the shelter and there was some sort of a landlord issue,
- 9:58so they had to bringing back for first female dogs. Loves to run
- 10:03and play and the people watch. Who doesn't love the people watch exactly?
- 10:07And look, this sounds like the perfect pet. So yeah, think about
- 10:11that. And if you've got some room over in the household, especially some
- 10:15good backyard room for him to roam around and so on, go get Cash.
- 10:18Yeah. Absolutely, And I mean keep in mind though you're gonna have
- 10:22to have a little room for him. As Hannah said, he is an
- 10:26escape artist. So and please do not get a dog if you're going to
- 10:30keep it chained up. That's because that is absolutely the worst thing in the
- 10:33world. If you can't, I mean, if you know going in that
- 10:37this dog is going to live its life chained out back, then don't get
- 10:39the dog, because that's one of my pet peeves. Do not get the
- 10:41dog. But if you got enough room and you got the room for him
- 10:46to be able to run and you can kind of keep him in safely without
- 10:50chanting him up. Make sure you do. Cash is his name again.
- 10:52Picture posted on my social media, so go check it out. Lots of
- 10:56energy, the young dog and that's a great name. Cash Cash, am
- 11:01your cash like I need more cash. I need more cash in my life.

- 14:07is with us this morning. Yes, Sir President, accounting for hanging in
- 14:09there this morning. Now we've got doctor Casey Sacksvillbridge Valley. We're going to
- 14:13go to her just a couple of moments. But before we do that,
- 14:16you guys, there's so many people in the in the Kanaal Valley. They're
- 14:18doing good things the holiday season. And where do you have My friend Amanda
- 14:22today she is at Inkovo, which is right next door to our studios right
- 14:26there off Coryer Street, downtown Charleston, and she's out there, bright eyed,
- 14:30bushy tale, big smile on her face as always, collecting toys for
- 14:33Toys for Tots today. All right, and again that's just one of the
- 14:37many folks that are doing some great things here in the holiday season. We'll
- 14:39talk about that a little bit later on. Let's go to doctor Casey Sachs
- 14:43for Bridge Valley. Dr Sacks, good morning, how are you? Good
- 14:46morning? I'm wonderful. How are you today? I am fine. I've
- 14:50got Pat Simon here. I don't know whether you know Pat or not,
- 14:52but now you do. Pat Simon from WOWKTV thirteen is my guest, so
- 14:58sitting in the seat that was formerly those occupied by you about a month or
- 15:01so ago. Oh Pat, I've heard already. You're not as cute as
- 15:03I am. There's a lot of truth. There's a lot of truth to
- 15:07that. That's a given. Yeah, wonderful to make a new friend.
- 15:11Thank you for having me this. I absolutely love your energy too. She's
- 15:16got a spark. Jesus, she's got the energy. I'll say that about
- 15:20her, doctor secks. What's going on out a Bridge Valley? You got
- 15:22so many things going on where do we start this morning? We do,
- 15:26we have so many things going on. I think the thing that I am
- 15:30focused my morning on is we are in the pre award stage of a big
- 15:33three million dollar Department of Energy grant for an industrialized assessment center to help small
- 15:39and medium sized manufacturers right here in the valley. So how did this all
- 15:43come about? Well, like so many awards, we really do pay a
- 15:48lot of attention to what's going on at grants dot Gov. And my team
- 15:52has been wonderful at saying, hey, we should apply for that. It's
- 15:56a good fit for something we have going on at the college. So one
- 15:58of our best programs is Advanced Manufacturing Technology. We see students graduate from that
- 16:03program and make on average eighty seven thousand dollars with a two year associates degree.
- 16:10It's a terrific program and so anything we can do to help get more
- 16:14students into it and more support for it, that's something more interested in.
- 16:17That's pretty incredible. What kind of careers are we talking about with that?
- 16:22So that's a great question. When you think about advanced manufacturing technology, it's
- 16:26not quite as intuitive as nursing. The people who go into AMT A lot
- 16:30in this area. Work at geest Stamp, work at Toyota, or get
- 16:34GreenPower Motor. New Core is hiring people out of that program. So it's
- 16:40manufacturing and it's really putting things together at Toyota. If you go on that
- 16:45particular site and go look at that tour, it's all of the automatic transmissions
- 16:49that they create in North America right here in West Virginia. I love the
- 16:53connection. I love that synthesis between the education community and those companies out there.
- 17:00That is so important, especially in this day and age. Right it
- 17:03absolutely is. It's one of the big areas of focus here at Bridge Valley
- 17:07that we don't have a single program on campus that's not connected to industry somewhere
- 17:12in the community and a real workforce need right here in the valley. You
- 17:15know, last night the gubernatorial debate, three of the four leading candidates were
- 17:22in that last night. I'm not going to ask you to comment on that
- 17:23specifically, but one thing that I thought that they all three mentioned at one
- 17:27point or another is the need for more programs like this, and that all
- 17:34three of those had said at one point or another doctor Sacks that they were
- 17:38all on board on this, and I think that's very important that we have
- 17:42those under our Capital Dome, no matter who the governor is or who's in
- 17:45the legislature or whatever, that they realized that how important that these type programs
- 17:49are not only for the West Virginians that are here, Doctor Sachs, but
- 17:52also to get people to come here and stay here. Yes, that's so
- 17:57true that having education all opportunities is incredibly important. And we have some wonderful
- 18:03higher education institutions here in West Virginia, and I'm proud to say that Bridge
- 18:07Valley is one of them. I got to tell you, being a veteran
- 18:08from the military, you know, and when these veterans they're you know,
- 18:12the active duty people come off of active duty and they're looking to make that
- 18:18transition right into civilian life. What do you folks do out there to help
- 18:21them out. We've actually been recognized as a gold Star institution. It's a
- 18:26recognition that colleges and universities can earn by providing extra support to veteran students.
- 18:33And so it's everything from dedicated advising, a real reach out to make sure
- 18:37people are getting the support that they need. On two of our three buildings,
- 18:41we have dedicated lounges for veteran students, and so it's just a dedicated
- 18:45space to make sure sort of like the USO but at college. Good way
- 18:51to put it. Yeah, we really want to make sure that our veteran
- 18:53students recognize how much we appreciate them and want them here on campus and understand
- 18:59the skills too, because you know, they don't just go out and fight
- 19:03wars. I mean there's a lot of leadership capabilities, a lot of experience
- 19:07that they have that carries into the business world automatically. There are your leaders
- 19:11and a lot of these businesses get a lot of the templates for their plans
- 19:15from the military, for sure, that's for sure true. And depending on
- 19:19your mos, we can bring in credit from the time that you spent in
- 19:22the military. So it's worth having that conversation also, and doctor Sacks thinking
- 19:27we're talking with doctor Casey Sacksterbridge Valley. Earlier in the week, I had
- 19:30on Morgan Tinny from the Putnam County Development Authority talking about some programs that they
- 19:36are offered with this fame program here in the Kanawh Valley, and I know
- 19:38Bridge Valley is a big, big part of that. And again you talked
- 19:41about the money, and I hate to make it all about the money,
- 19:44but people that know me know I'm the ultimate capitalist. It is sometimes all
- 19:48about the money and when you're a younger person. And these programs are open
- 19:52to anybody, by the way, but the program that we talked about,
- 19:55I'm going to focus now on the younger I mean, I don't know about
- 19:57you, but making sixty seventy it ran a year at twenty one, twenty
- 20:00two years old without student debt. That's pretty dang cool. It is the
- 20:06West Virginia FAME program. I love that Morgan has partnered with us on this.
- 20:08She has been a tremendous asset. FAME is the Federation for Advanced Manufacturing
- 20:14Education. Bridge Valley brought it into the valley a few years ago, and
- 20:18it's really taken off with Morgan's partnership because now the Putnam County Development Authority is
- 20:23helping recruit students directly into the program. And so what FAME does is it
- 20:27brings manufacturers in to the college and they give students a work based learning experience,
- 20:33so they pay students wages. They go work at Toyota three days a
- 20:37week, and then they come to Bridge Valley two days a week to do
- 20:40their associate's degree. So it's like OJT on the job training. It is
- 20:45exactly on the job training and basically in most cases, once they wrap up
- 20:48the training, it's like congratulations, here's your certificate. Now go to work,
- 20:52Go across the hall and go to work. When we were growing up
- 20:56and going through college and that was the hardest thing. I heard Chris talking
- 20:59of up this on Metro News this morning, that was the hardest thing.
- 21:03It was hard to find a job back then. But these days, there
- 21:06are so many opportunities like this to take advantage of, right there are.
- 21:08I mean, another program we do it for is in nursing. WVU Medicine
- 21:12has come in and created the Aspiring Nurse program and they've committed one and a
- 21:17half million dollars a year to pay students to go to school. They need
- 21:21nurses so bad. Yeah, Akslly, it's always a pleasure to talk to
- 21:25you, doctor Sex, because you've always got a lot of exciting things that
- 21:27are going on out at Bridge Valley. And again, where can people learn
- 21:32more about any of the things you talked about today Bridge Valley dot edu.
- 21:34We'd love to have you come on out to campus all right, And actually
- 21:38I'm will put you on the spot, doctor Sachs, because we're friends.
- 21:42I can do that. Pat Simon and I, my co host, Pat
- 21:45and I were talking before the show about I know you guys are big on
- 21:51veterans out there. Pat, why don't you give her your idea and we'll
- 21:52just make her commit to it on the air. There we go. I
- 21:55love doing that too. We're always looking for solutions to issues that you have
- 22:00a number of organizations that veterans belong to, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American
- 22:04Collegion, and so on. Where I came from last I was in South
- 22:08Texas and there was this group that got together every week at the local community
- 22:12college. Group of veterans came together from not only just camaraderie, but also
- 22:18to learn more, to be educated about the things that are happening with veterans
- 22:22through the VA and so on. Politicians would show up, our government leaders
- 22:26and so on to tell us the latest and greatest of what's happening at how
- 22:30it impacts veterans. Is that something that you folks would be open to to
- 22:33have kind of whether it's a weekly, bye weekly, what have you?
- 22:37A meeting area for veterans and their families as well, because they need to
- 22:42be in on the information sharing as well. Would that be something you'd be
- 22:45open to. Yeah, we actually host lots of outside groups on campus.
- 22:51People rent space from us all the time, use space from us all the
- 22:53time. The rules kind of depend on if students are involved or not,
- 22:57or if a staff sponsor is involved or not. But I would love to
- 23:00talk to you about it, Pat, we'll do that's my phone number.
- 23:03Thank you, Dave. There you get Can it happened? One other quick
- 23:06thing? I promise I'll let you go. Doctor. Somebody texted the show
- 23:08and said, given the need for teachers, does Bridge Valley is there a
- 23:11time at Bridge Valley may offer teachers degree out there? Is that something maybe
- 23:15could be on the radar or how does I mean possibly at some point.
- 23:18So new degrees are always on our radar, and we design them based on
- 23:22what industry is willing to hire for So if our local area school districts were
- 23:27willing to hire people with Associates degrees to teach, then it would make a
- 23:30lot of sense for us to open a degree program. Right now, we
- 23:33have some Associates degree programs that are more geared towards elementary education. But they're
- 23:38very very much about transfer to Marshall and WVU from those programs so that students
- 23:44can complete their bachelor's degrees because that's what's currently required to work in the field.
- 23:48All right, doctor Sachs, I appreciate you being here. Thanks a
- 23:51lot. We'll talk soon. Thank you for having me. Now to Casey

- 24:37How you doing? I'm doing. I'm doing. Pat Simon, you
- 24:41know how we were going to be coming out of a break, but oh
- 24:47no, man, the show goes on. Your your your information is far
- 24:51too important. I don't know what's the to deal with the microphone here.
- 24:52You may have to hold it. It's not it's radio. Go back,
- 25:00go back to your lounge singing days when you're in Vegas. So that I
- 25:03ask you to come in there this morning, because as you know, the
- 25:06Selingo Law light then continues over Gomar Ballpark and it's actually going on through the
- 25:11weekend, through the holiday season. Actually, thanks V one hundred night.
- 25:14Is that right? It's twenty first, it's twenty first weeks from tonight.
- 25:18Oh okay, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Well but we're going to make
- 25:21it our act tonight. Anyway, we're just going to take it over.
- 25:22Well, anybody can take it over. The lottery is going to be there
- 25:26tonight. Okay, we've got our good friends with the lottery. How has
- 25:29it been so far rod out there with Well, we're estimating that about forty
- 25:33thousand people have already come through. She's opened on November seventeenth. Now,
- 25:37that also includes some nights where the attendance was pretty low, which included opening
- 25:41night whenever it was raining and cold. Rain is the bane of this.
- 25:45I mean, we haven't had snow yet, a feeling that a lot of
- 25:48people have gone through it first time. We'll want to come back and see
- 25:52it in the snow too, whenever that happens, and we'll get it at
- 25:56some point, oh yeah, at some point during between. It's every night
- 25:59between now and January through January first, so even New Year's Day evening you
- 26:03get to sort of close it out with us and bring in the new year
- 26:06and close out to the Selango Law. Dirty Birds Light the Night presented by
- 26:11Gomarthha And what an experience too to bring the family to check out all of
- 26:15these lights. How many lights are we? Over two million? I mean,
- 26:18I don't think I keep joking with the kids as they're leaving if I'm
- 26:22if I'm at the gate, I'm saying, okay, so was it your
- 26:23responsible? Are you count the lights or sometimes joking with somebody who was wearing
- 26:27lights, I'm sorry, you cannot leave. That'll leave us with one million,
- 26:30nine hundred and ninety nine thousand mine yet. Yeah, but it is,
- 26:33it's it's been really remarkable in Andy Shay's vision for it after he saw
- 26:38something similar in Florence, Kentucky last year is what really inspired it, and
- 26:42he came back and he said, we need to do this. Well,
- 26:45it's it's incredible. When I was in Huntsville and Alabama the trash pandas right,
- 26:49their team had something similar to this when they just did the startup and
- 26:53so on, and I was like, this is going to really take off
- 26:56nationwide. I'm just so proud to see you guys is taking it on and
- 27:02giving that to the community the way that you're doing but trying something from some
- 27:06a place that's different and bringing it here and making it a tradition. Oh
- 27:11absolutely. I mean we did that with festival a long time ago, whenever
- 27:14we saw what was happening in the other Charleston with their Spiledo festival. So
- 27:18yeah, there are a lot of reasons, a lot of ways that people
- 27:19can say and have an impact on their community by saying, hey, I
- 27:22saw this in this place, can we do that here? That's how the
- 27:26car show really got So, I mean there's really no new ideas per se.
- 27:30I mean, you know, it is pretty limited. Yeah, yeah,
- 27:33So, I mean that's what you do. Again. We had Rod
- 27:36Blackstone here talking about light the Night. I had a mayor on earlier this
- 27:38week, on Mayor Monday, and she said there at that time, Rod,
- 27:41that would have been Monday, there were thirty five different states had come
- 27:47to this thing. Thirty that's what they know of. I mean, you
- 27:49know, I mean that's incredible. Thirty five different states for the first couple
- 27:55of weeks of the first year of this event. And that's her online sales
- 27:57only because the crowds have been so big, we can't we don't want to
- 28:03slow down the lines by having the ticket taker or the ticket sellers in the
- 28:07box office saying, oh, so, what's your what's your zip code?
- 28:10Can we register you? I mean, that'd be a great way to be
- 28:11able to find it out. But I've been on the gate a few times,
- 28:15been in the ticket office once, and so I know that there are
- 28:18people that are coming from a lot of different places. So the online orders
- 28:21that we can track their where they're called, where they're buying the tickets from.
- 28:26That's what that means. Well, that also adds to the allure we're
- 28:29talking about making kind of Charleston. One more thing that makes Charleston kind of
- 28:32a vacation destination, if you will. I've got family that just came in
- 28:36here. A lot of families come over here to visit during the holidays and
- 28:38so on, Hey, what can we do? What can we do?
- 28:41This is one more of those things to do. Yeah, when I was
- 28:42in the Mayor's office, we figured June was the big time to be here
- 28:45because you had festival going on. You you'd be leading into the July fourth
- 28:49weekend, you'd have a bike there is a biker thing that happened, Pride
- 28:55happens at that point. I think there's Alignment Rodeo years ago. So June
- 28:59was the big time to be in Charleston, and then October with Fest of
- 29:02all Fall and some of the other things that were going on. Now now
- 29:03it's also December, Yeah, November, and the whole concept behind any successful
- 29:10city that does this sort of thing Rod, as you well know and Pat
- 29:12all your travels you know too. Is having things like this year round,
- 29:17yes, you know, and having and having and just think, well,
- 29:19March is exciting, but so is October, you know, in these cities.
- 29:22And that's that's kind of what we're going. I want to kind of
- 29:25bring this up, and I want to tread on this lightly because I got
- 29:26several texts here about it. Explain the pricing, because I have had some
- 29:32text Rod to the show where people have said, it's it's a little expensive.
- 29:34I mean, can you address that in any way well compared to what
- 29:37well, I mean the question what people have said and and by the way,
- 29:41the first text I got said Light the Night is awesome must see for
- 29:45everyone. Also great to hear Rod on the program this morning. Thanks signed
- 29:48Rod, how'd you do that? But but but anyway, no, I
- 29:52mean there have been people that have said, well that for a family of
- 29:55four or five, it's a it's kind of expensive. Is there something maybe
- 29:59that we could I don't know what you do, because it's going to cost
- 30:03for people to come in, But I don't know what kind of solution there
- 30:06is to that. Well, and here's the challenge, And this is one
- 30:08of the things I've tried to tell people whenever they asked that question, Oh,
- 30:11why can't it be free? Well, if only we could get two
- 30:15million lights produced arrange programmed for free. I mean, I just learned the
- 30:19other night how much the Christmas tree and the middle cost, and then plus
- 30:22that was a cost of program it, for instance, So the installation costs
- 30:26money, The lights cost a lot. This is a significant investment by Andy
- 30:30Shay and the folks that he's working with to bring this here, and it
- 30:36would be nice if sponsors would cover the entire cost of it so we could
- 30:38have free but that's unfortunately not going to be a reality. And with two
- 30:42million lights and all that went into it, eight weeks of labor effectively going
- 30:48into producing what you saw there. So it'd be nice if it could be
- 30:52free. It'd be nice if there was some billionaire out there that said,
- 30:55hey, here, let me give you all the money that you wanted to
- 30:56do that. Rod. You never know, because when they see this for
- 30:59the first time, they see how successful it is. You may have more
- 31:02sponsors coming in next year, so for some discounts and that kind of thing.
- 31:06And I think I have a text here that somebody said, well,
- 31:07we're not asking for free, maybe just some sort of family pricing, maybe
- 31:10a group price. Maybe it's something we can look at it. Well,
- 31:11we do have group pricing in fact. Okay, so the best time if
- 31:15you want to go when it's the least expensive. It's Monday, Tuesday,
- 31:18Wednesday, Thursdays or nine dollars for adults, seven dollars for kids and as
- 31:23opposed to twelve and ten, which is normal the weekends and holiday rate.
- 31:29But what we do is we use the youth pricing for the groups for those
- 31:34nights too. So for instance, folks my church wanted to come and bring
- 31:38people across the spectrum to come on Monday night, they get the seven dollars
- 31:44discount for the group, And if you order your skating tickets early, you
- 31:48also get a five dollars price for a group on that as opposed to the
- 31:52regular eight dollars if you show up and want to do it. So there
- 31:55are ways to be able to save some money on it. But yeah,
- 31:56unfortunately it does cost money. I think you're absolutely right about the sponsors.
- 32:02I got that with the lottery. Lottery is one of mine for the baseball
- 32:05season and they were all in. They thought this is going to be great,
- 32:08so sight unseen, they decided to become a sponsor of it, and
- 32:12you can play a lottery game by doing a little thing with a QR code
- 32:15in the maze that they're sponsoring, for instance. But yeah, I think
- 32:19that will grow in the future and probably be able to be able to have
- 32:22some evenings that do that. I would encourage also by the way people get
- 32:25their tickets on line. Please because I've been in the box office, I've
- 32:30been at the gate to see how the long the lines are, especially on
- 32:32weekend nights that are like tonight'll be you know, kind of cool but pretty
- 32:39no rain and maybe cool and crisp. Those are the knights that are really
- 32:43getting people out. We'll probably have five thousand more people come through here,
- 32:46and we've already had about forty thousand, so it's pretty exciting. But then
- 32:51there are other nights that are going to be a little less. It's a
- 32:52little cool on the weeknight, lower smaller crowds, easier to get tickets,
- 33:00easier to go ice skating and not have a huge line to have to put
- 33:02up with the to do with the Ferris Field now The other thing is the
- 33:06other things that we're having around there, like the ferris wheel, like the
- 33:09big slide, like the little train that runs most of the time. Sometimes
- 33:15we've had some malfunctions on that. Unfortunately, we're not doing this completely from
- 33:21scratch, but there's some growing things that go along with doing this the first
- 33:23time. That's cool to have kind of this winter wonderland connection of different kinds
- 33:28of things. So this the lights to be a part of other things around
- 33:31there for the entire family. Being a father to my kid is thirty two,
- 33:37by the way, Zach's birthday is today, by the way. But
- 33:39but there we go. Thanks And you know, families are looking for stuff
- 33:45like this. Oh yeah, that's wholesome, natural thing. Where can I
- 33:49bring my kids to? Like you see the lights and they're illuminating like that.
- 33:52It's like an experience. You're building those experiences. This is such a
- 33:54cool thing. No, it really is. It's a great it's a great
- 33:58thing for our community. I'm glad and he saw it. I'm glad he
- 34:00was willing to make the investment because that's really what it was. So that's
- 34:04one of the things I don't want to get too defensive about the pricing,
- 34:06but it does cost money to do this unfortunately, is going to cost money
- 34:08to take it down to But it would be great to be able to do
- 34:13it as inexpensively as possible. And I really feel for the folks from the
- 34:16poor communities around here and what they can do. But it might be that
- 34:20they can get other folks to hey, I want to buy your tickets.
- 34:23We've had that happen. In fact, some of the people from my church
- 34:25are saying, hey, I want to buy some tickets for so some of
- 34:28the people that don't make as much money can come into All right, well,
- 34:30it's going to continue throughout the holiday season, every night through January first.
- 34:37That includes Christmas Eve and New Year's even Christmas Day. So all right,
- 34:40Rod, I appreciate you being here, man, Thanks a lot,

- 35:10But PJ is a proven winner. He knows how to put a team

- 38:19this morning. Pat tell us about Pat Simon, Oh, where you originally?
- 38:23Where was home for you? Growing up? Where you from? I
- 38:25grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana. That's in the heart of Cajun Country down
- 38:30there in southwest Louisiana. And growing up there you learn so many different ways
- 38:37to cook. You know, We've got the gumbos and the jambalayas and those
- 38:40kinds of things. So I learned that from my mom and my grandma how
- 38:43to cook a good gumbo. But what is a secret to a good gumbo?
- 38:46Give me Don't burn the room, Okay, so you get the flour
- 38:50in the oil that you're cont that right, Don't burn the roof. Don't
- 38:53burn the room. You're constantly stirring that base, you know, but you
- 38:57can't burn I've seen so many people just burn it, and you just got
- 39:00to stay on it and stir stirster. So, you know, growing up
- 39:02in South Louisiana, it was major oil, just like here is coal,
- 39:07major oil and gas down there, and we went through a bust in the
- 39:10nineteen eighty so it was really tough on a lot of the folks down there,
- 39:14but they figured a way to turn it around. Tourism was a big
- 39:16draw and still is, and so I got a chance to kind of meet
- 39:20so many different people. I went to school at LSU, graduated at ROTC,
- 39:25and Ronald Reagan was our commitsment'spilly back in nineteen ninety. So that's when
- 39:30I was commissioned as a second lieutenant, and I stayed thank you for your
- 39:34service, bank you very much. I stayed in the National Guard. I
- 39:36ended up in the Reserve. My last five years, I was an instructor
- 39:38at Command General Staff Officer College, So we taught majors how to be our
- 39:44future leaders out there and great staff officers. And I did a little combat
- 39:46tour out there in Iraq in two thousand and nine. I can tell you
- 39:50a story too about that. But it was a great experience in the military.
- 39:54And I was doing radio and television as well. So I had kind
- 39:58of a dual career going on on part military and so. And most of
- 40:01it was radio back in eighty four that I started out, and I eventually
- 40:06got into television, and here I am today. Was this something that you
- 40:08wanted to do as a kid? Did you think I want to be in
- 40:10television. It's funny you asked that. When people say that, it's like
- 40:15back in the day, we used to have these stereo systems where you can
- 40:19actually plug in a microphone and you can hear yourself, kind of like a
- 40:22mister microphone that eventual, Hey, good looking, We'll be back to pick
- 40:24you up later, Ryan, I'll explain it to you after the show.
- 40:28And so, so I just took to that, and so I started talking
- 40:31to the microphone, and pretty soon we were having like these little events over
- 40:37at my house and I'm here, I am on the microphone, just like
- 40:38introducing these little acts or whatever, people singing or whatever. The kids it
- 40:43was kids. I was like eight, and I said, hey, i's
- 40:45like the most Little Rascals thing ever. I saw an episode of Little Rascals.
- 40:50What's the number to nine? One one? And so so I,
- 40:52you know, I said, I could do this, I think, And
- 40:55so from then on I thought, I mean, I was very curious.
- 40:59So I thought, okay, I like this idea of talking on the radio
- 41:02and getting into television and telling stories, and I'm very curious about that.
- 41:07And then being a veteran, that's my stick right now. I love telling
- 41:10veterans stories about their families as well to preserve legacies. And I think that's
- 41:15so important for our generations growing up, and they have to understand the service
- 41:20and sacrifices. So many people may what areas have you worked in? I
- 41:23always love to ask television, and not so much radio, but television people,
- 41:28I like to say, you know, take it from the top.
- 41:30Every television market you worked in, Oh, boy, so I actually won
- 41:36cut them down so Lafayette, Louisiana. I actually worked overnights at a fifty
- 41:39sixty seventy solid gold radio stations and AM station. I work two to six
- 41:44AM So Lafayette to Baton Rouge, to Ashville, North Carolina, to Shreveport,
- 41:52Louisiana, to Syracuse, New York, West Virginia, so Charleston,
- 41:59West Virginia in twenty sixteen, and then I went down to Huntsville, Alabama,
- 42:02then South Texas Corpus Christie. I just came from there. And then
- 42:06I got a call from Sean Banks, our general manager, and said,
- 42:07hey, you want to come back up here to West Virginia. I said,
- 42:10I love the people, love the area there. So he gave me
- 42:14an opportunity and I so appreciate it. So back here to West Virginia a
- 42:16second time. It's amazing to me. And I hear this story a lot
- 42:21about people that come to West Virginia that aren't from here and love it and
- 42:25want to stick around. I mean, I'll give you an example from your
- 42:29own station. Brian Hughes, a frequent guest of the show. You look
- 42:31at somebody on the other stations they're that way as well. We have them
- 42:37in our building here. You know, Rob Gaveadezer morning show on KWS was
- 42:40here left but wanted to come back to West Virginia. If we could just
- 42:45get West Virginians to want to be in West Virginia, we'd be okay.
- 42:47But there's some reason people from outside here when they come here, they have
- 42:52a Tennessee to like it well. And it's one of the best kept secrets
- 42:57I think in all of this country, in all of my travels or you
- 43:00know, I say, West Virginia, Well, what's there to do in
- 43:01West Virginia? Just go there? I promise you, if you make it
- 43:05through the fall. In the winter time, you're going to fall in love
- 43:07with this place. And during the summertime it's not as hot, I promise
- 43:12you. I just came from South Texas. Oh yeah, it was one
- 43:15hundred and fifteen degrees out there during the summertime and no rain for the longest
- 43:20period of time. Over here, it's just perfect. It's perfect. The
- 43:22sights, the sounds, the air, you know, it's it's just just
- 43:25so beautiful. But the people make it the best. Text says Pat does
- 43:30not have the Louisiana drawl. How did you lose it in college? Yeah,
- 43:36so I had a professor and I did have that misshat. I talked
- 43:38like this, you know, I had to hold you. And I had
- 43:44a professor that said, hey, look, if you really want to do
- 43:46this, I'm gonna I can work with you on your dialect and so on.
- 43:50So it's not like you're trying to get away from something like that,
- 43:53because I'm very proud of that heritage. That Cajun heritage is very proud people
- 43:58and in a lot of a lot of points that the people down in South
- 44:02Louisiana remind me of the kind people here and the humble people here in West
- 44:07Virginia as well. But so he taught me how, you know, going
- 44:12through a process to have more of a regional accent and then just you know,
- 44:19over time, Dave, you know, doing this job over and over
- 44:22and over again, it just becomes you whoever you are. Yeah, I
- 44:25don't know. I've I've had people that have told me that, you know,
- 44:29I don't necessarily have the Appalachian accent, but then from times it comes
- 44:32out. It comes out a whole lot, especially if I get like,
- 44:35you know, you're excited or upset or something like that. It really yeah,
- 44:38it really comes out. Ay Today Valancho and five eighty Live is brought

- 50:00she is what the real deal, right, And she's so professional and she's
- 50:06so fun to be around. I just feel so lucky every day to show
- 50:08up and kind and she didn't even pay me now, you know. But
- 50:12she's that kind of person. She's a kind of good friend. I've known
- 50:15Amanda for like twenty years or something like that, and she and I go
- 50:17back and forth on sports all the time, you know, she being a
- 50:21Cleveland fan and we go back and anytime I see anything that downs the Browns,
- 50:24I have to send it to her. But nonetheless, do you have
- 50:28any idols in this business, Pat, anybody that you on the maybe network
- 50:30let or even local level, that you really looked up to and said that's
- 50:34I'd like to emulate their career. I'd like to be more like that person
- 50:37than anybody. I don't know if there was anybody like that. I do.
- 50:40I do miss the days gone by and radio. I'm one of those
- 50:45guys like the Paul Harvey's right, Yeah, really stories that Paul Harvey,
- 50:49that news and comment, Paul Harvey, Good Date. You know the stories
- 50:52that he told, and you know he embellished a little bit, okay,
- 50:57but there were great stories. And I wish that more people knew probably who
- 51:02I'm talking about Paul Harvey in the first place, But he's one of those
- 51:06guys that you know, you when he talked, you listen, you know,
- 51:10and then he'd do page two and he'll do a little commercial break or
- 51:14whatever about Buwick or whatever it was. And I just loved his style,
- 51:19and I love the way that he enunciated and loved those those stories. And
- 51:22you know, in radio, you bring those pictures to life, right,
- 51:25punching in with words, what are you give me thirty seconds or forty five
- 51:29seconds. What's the average day like for you? Because you do so many
- 51:30different things now in the world of television, what's an average day like for
- 51:35you? Before we go heck tick it and it begins before I even show
