- 0:16Speaker 2: Jeremy Hasson MILFD Acid Managements with us A. Jeremy, Hey,
- 0:20Speaker 2: you have that. Okay, So it looks a little bit
- 0:22Speaker 2: like in the past week, the old chip in the
- 0:24Speaker 2: AI sect has been having some wobbles in the markets.
- 0:27Speaker 2: What's been going on here?
- 0:30Speaker 3: Yeah, so the US indexes, in a particular the Nasdaq,
- 0:33Speaker 3: the techiv in NAZDAK has sold off around four percent
- 0:37Speaker 3: in the past week or so. And if we look
- 0:40Speaker 3: below the surface, it's the Magnificent seven. So the large
- 0:44Speaker 3: seven tech stocks over there, and you know, they're down
- 0:49Speaker 3: at least five percent in June, and even the giants
- 0:52Speaker 3: like Microsoft down sixteen, Amazon thirteen percent. And it's really
- 0:57Speaker 3: around some of this questions in AI and investors just
- 1:02Speaker 3: just trying to decide whether the amount of spend has justified,
- 1:05Speaker 3: are the returns there and sort of another point we
- 1:08Speaker 3: talked about is just these giant companies are going to
- 1:12Speaker 3: be used as a funding source for big I pos
- 1:15Speaker 3: like SpaceX, but unfortunately even SpaceX hasn't avoided the sell off.
- 1:20Speaker 3: It obviously pop posts the IPO, but it's given back
- 1:22Speaker 3: around a quarter of its value over the past week
- 1:25Speaker 3: as well, and.
- 1:26Speaker 2: The chip sectors had even more violent moves down right.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, we know these chip makers which have
- 1:33Speaker 3: been crucial, crucial components in that AI data center buildout.
- 1:38Speaker 3: They've been absolutely exploding this year in terms of share
- 1:41Speaker 3: price share price gains. But I suppose alongside these questions
- 1:47Speaker 3: in AI, these stocks are very very sensitive to any
- 1:51Speaker 3: potential issues or reduced demand around that AI buildout, and
- 1:55Speaker 3: it could cause some big retlacements in their share price.
- 1:59Speaker 3: I mean the trout the trade, sorry, is very crowded
- 2:02Speaker 3: and it's all going one way. So for example, Micron,
- 2:05Speaker 3: which has been I suppose the poster child of this
- 2:07Speaker 3: chips It's now the twelfth most valuable company in the world,
- 2:11Speaker 3: but it was down thirteen percent in one day, so
- 2:14Speaker 3: I mean it's been a winning trade, but there are
- 2:16Speaker 3: a few risks building here on the horizon.
- 2:18Speaker 2: All right, now, what is going on with the ETFs
- 2:21Speaker 2: and the volatility?
- 2:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean these ETFs have been or exchange traded
- 2:28Speaker 3: funds is are also known have become very popular investments
- 2:32Speaker 3: in the past few years, and they're effectively a basket
- 2:35Speaker 3: of companies that you can just passively buy and they
- 2:38Speaker 3: track a thematic or or a market index, and they've
- 2:43Speaker 3: traditionally been very good diversification. They're cheap and simple, but
- 2:48Speaker 3: they are starting to come with a few risks that
- 2:50Speaker 3: aren't really well flagged. And we do see this happen
- 2:53Speaker 3: during these sort of violen cell offs that we've had
- 2:55Speaker 3: such as this week, and in theory, they're actually not
- 2:58Speaker 3: becoming as diversified as you would expect. I mean, a
- 3:01Speaker 3: lot of them are very very exposed to this AI
- 3:04Speaker 3: theme and they do chase some of the very strong winners,
- 3:07Speaker 3: such in the chip sector. So if you get these
- 3:10Speaker 3: AI wobbles in the market in these thematics, then ETF
- 3:14Speaker 3: investors they do tend to wear a big downside risk
- 3:17Speaker 3: when these moves happen.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Yeah, And the passive ETFs really exacerbate the moves up
- 3:21Speaker 2: and down, don't they.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean they tend to follow the market direction
- 3:27Speaker 3: in terms of buying and selling, and they don't really
- 3:29Speaker 3: care about the price of the underlying security. So effectively,
- 3:34Speaker 3: when the market goes down, these ETFs must sell units,
- 3:38Speaker 3: they must sell stock in these underlying companies, and that
- 3:41Speaker 3: does tend to exasperate the move down or up, depending
- 3:45Speaker 3: which way are the market's going, And it does add
- 3:48Speaker 3: to these volatilities and a lot of them have leveraging
- 3:50Speaker 3: them too, And just given the size of these investors
- 3:55Speaker 3: now in the market and these in these passive ETFs,
- 3:58Speaker 3: it is causing someside outsized moves. So there's just another
- 4:02Speaker 3: risk for investors to navigate in markets at the moment.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Mate, It's always good to talk to you. Thank you
