- 0:01Speaker 1: Taking a Walk Nashville. Well, Hi, my name is Buzz Night.
- 0:03Speaker 2: I host this podcast called the Taking a Walk Podcast,
- 0:07Speaker 2: and my goodness, I am with someone who hosts a podcast.
- 0:12Speaker 2: It's called Taking a Walk Nashville. Hi, Sarah Harrilson, thanks
- 0:15Speaker 2: for having me on your show.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Hi, Buzz thank you for being on Taking a Walk
- 0:20Speaker 3: Nashville today.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Yes, we are able to get together here by the
- 0:27Speaker 2: beauty of virtuality. I'm outside of Boston, you're outside of Nashville,
- 0:34Speaker 2: and we're going to talk about what's going on in
- 0:37Speaker 2: the unbelievable music scene around Nashville. And we're going to
- 0:41Speaker 2: take a look at the week of November seventeenth, and
- 0:45Speaker 2: I'm pretty certain there's a fair amount of stuff going
- 0:48Speaker 2: on with all different genres of music. Would you agree, Sarah?
- 0:52Speaker 4: Of course. Yeah.
- 0:52Speaker 3: As I mentioned on the last concert calendar, there's always
- 0:56Speaker 3: so many events happening in Nashville, and just because it's
- 1:00Speaker 3: getting cold outside does not mean it's slowing down here.
- 1:04Speaker 3: And there's so much on the lineup for November seventeenth.
- 1:09Speaker 3: We have Stephen Wilson Junior at the Ryman on the
- 1:13Speaker 3: twenty third. I think that'll be a great concert because
- 1:18Speaker 3: it's going to be his largest hometown headline to date
- 1:22Speaker 3: at this venue.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Now tell me what you know about Steven. We've tried
- 1:26Speaker 2: to get him on Taking a Walk a couple times
- 1:29Speaker 2: through his people, and he's like a lot of artists.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Obviously he's on the road a lot. But for Steven,
- 1:37Speaker 2: this is a bit of a homecoming, right it is.
- 1:40Speaker 4: Yeah, he has such a great story.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I would love to have him on Taking a Walk Nashville.
- 1:45Speaker 3: His own music is kind of a blend of indie
- 1:47Speaker 3: rock and country, but he's also written quite a few
- 1:51Speaker 3: songs for a variety of artists like Caitlin Smith, Old Dominion, Brothers, Osbourne.
- 1:57Speaker 3: The list goes on and on. But his journey, I
- 2:01Speaker 3: think is very unique. He was a Golden Gloves boxer
- 2:05Speaker 3: and then later a research scientist and now he's doing music.
- 2:09Speaker 4: So he's done it all.
- 2:12Speaker 3: And in addition to performing at the Rieman on November
- 2:17Speaker 3: twenty third and twenty fourth, he's also going to be
- 2:19Speaker 3: performing with Shaboozi at the CMA Awards on the nineteenth.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Well that's pretty big.
- 2:25Speaker 2: He must be a nervous wreck over that, I'm guessing Yeah,
- 2:29Speaker 2: probably not.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I mean, come on, he's a piece of cake for him.
- 2:33Speaker 2: But now, is it fair to say this time around
- 2:36Speaker 2: Nashville is when a lot of the artists you know,
- 2:40Speaker 2: are coming back home. They're coming off the long road,
- 2:44Speaker 2: but they're still doing select dates, kind of celebrating the holidays.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Yes, if the artist is not on like a holiday tour,
- 2:53Speaker 3: usually they're back here in Nashville, maybe performing at different
- 2:56Speaker 3: events in Nashville. And that's definitely why CMA they host
- 3:00Speaker 3: their awards in November, because a lot of artists are
- 3:03Speaker 3: off tour and able to be at the award show.
- 3:06Speaker 3: And that's happening on Wednesday, November nineteenth at Bridgestone Arena.
- 3:12Speaker 4: I think it's gonna be another great award show.
- 3:17Speaker 3: The females are kind of dominating this year in nominations.
- 3:21Speaker 3: We have Ella Langley, Megan Maroney and Landy Wilson. They've
- 3:25Speaker 3: received the most nominations this year with six each.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Yay yay. Yeah pro ladies, Yes, yeah. So Stephen Wilson
- 3:37Speaker 1: at the Ryman.
- 3:38Speaker 2: That's is that what you think maybe is the big
- 3:42Speaker 2: event of the week or are there some others?
- 3:45Speaker 3: Definitely Stephen Wilson at the Ryman and then of course
- 3:47Speaker 3: the CMA Awards. We also have going on Christmas at Belmont.
- 3:55Speaker 3: That was one of my favorite events to attend when
- 3:58Speaker 3: I was at Belmont's going to be on November twenty
- 4:02Speaker 3: first and twenty second at the Fisher Center for the
- 4:05Speaker 3: Performing Arts. That's their new Performing Arts center. It's so
- 4:09Speaker 3: beautiful if no one has been there before, and more
- 4:13Speaker 3: than six hundred Belmont students will perform Christmas and holiday
- 4:17Speaker 3: music and it really is magical.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Oh my god, have you been to that one before
- 4:22Speaker 1: you go?
- 4:23Speaker 3: I have? Yeah, especially when I attended Belmont. I went
- 4:26Speaker 3: pretty much every year.
- 4:29Speaker 2: There's nothing like the holiday spirit, right, Yeah. And what
- 4:33Speaker 2: are some of the other venues that might be popping
- 4:36Speaker 2: up for that week?
- 4:38Speaker 3: Yeah, So we talked about country music holiday music, but
- 4:42Speaker 3: we're not limited to that. In Nashville, we have New
- 4:47Speaker 3: Faces Night that happens every Tuesday at the Original Basement
- 4:53Speaker 3: on Eighth Avenue. That's happening November eighteenth at eight pm.
- 4:58Speaker 3: New Faces Night always features different artists in Nashville. I
- 5:03Speaker 3: think they get like a thirty minute set each, usually
- 5:07Speaker 3: a lot of I've heard so many different genres when
- 5:11Speaker 3: I've been to New Faces Night, not just country. I've
- 5:14Speaker 3: heard rock, I've heard nd so it's always a great
- 5:19Speaker 3: venue and night to see different kinds of music.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Now, is the Basement where on our earlier episode of
- 5:27Speaker 2: the Concert Calendar where Thomas Dolby was appearing, Do I
- 5:30Speaker 2: have that correct?
- 5:31Speaker 1: Or was he at another venue?
- 5:33Speaker 3: That was the Basement East and East Nashville.
- 5:36Speaker 4: So that's a lot.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Bigger than the original Basement. The original Basement is literally
- 5:42Speaker 3: underground and kind of a basement area.
- 5:45Speaker 4: It's a lot smaller, but.
- 5:48Speaker 3: It's a fun vibe.
- 5:50Speaker 2: And does Nashville get crazy besides the locals around the holidays?
- 5:57Speaker 2: Is there a lot of tourism still going on this
- 6:00Speaker 2: time of year?
- 6:02Speaker 3: Absolutely, especially over at the Opry. Opry does their Christmas
- 6:08Speaker 3: classics and then they have all of the Christmas lights up,
- 6:12Speaker 3: so it's a popular time for tourists to come see
- 6:15Speaker 3: all of the lights at Opry and enjoy the holiday
- 6:19Speaker 3: fun over there.
- 6:21Speaker 2: And I want to ask you, so what happens with
- 6:24Speaker 2: the intersection of sports and music in Nashville. Obviously you
- 6:32Speaker 2: have a football team. I don't know if you're a
- 6:34Speaker 2: fan of that football team or not. You're you're allowed
- 6:37Speaker 2: to not be because I know you probably have other
- 6:40Speaker 2: fan affinity on the sports side, I'm guessing, but maybe not.
- 6:46Speaker 2: But so, what I'm asking is when the football team
- 6:50Speaker 2: is in full force, do artists typically play at these
- 6:54Speaker 2: games at halftime?
- 6:56Speaker 1: What goes on?
- 6:58Speaker 3: Oh? Yeah, all the time, especially some we're in music City.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Besides Titans games, we have Predators hockey always going on,
- 7:07Speaker 3: So there's always a band that will play during the
- 7:13Speaker 3: halftime at Titans.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Or the Pred's game.
- 7:16Speaker 3: There's always someone famous who usually does the national anthem
- 7:21Speaker 3: at both games too, as well as our Nashville soccer team.
- 7:25Speaker 3: There's always music going on over there. So sports and
- 7:29Speaker 3: music always happening here in Nashville. And the new Titans
- 7:35Speaker 3: Stadium is actually being built right now and that's expected
- 7:38Speaker 3: to open in twenty twenty seven.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Wait, there's construction in Nashville happening. I can't believe it.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Yeah, every time I go there, I'm like, there's more
- 7:48Speaker 2: buildings that are being put up.
- 7:50Speaker 3: My god, Well, do you know what the bird of
- 7:53Speaker 3: Nashville is? No, it's the crane.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I fell for it.
- 8:02Speaker 2: It's been a day and I fell for that one.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And I'm so happy that I did.
- 8:07Speaker 2: I didn't say that we're Titans, I hope you noticed
- 8:09Speaker 2: that I was kind of holding back on that.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Now.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Look partially because I live outside of Boston and you
- 8:17Speaker 2: might think I'm a loyal Patriots fan. And right now
- 8:22Speaker 2: I'm going to jump on the bandwagon. I'm a fair
- 8:25Speaker 2: weather Patriots fan, so I'm they're on a roll.
- 8:29Speaker 1: So I say go Patriots. Go.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Mike Vabriel he was your former coach, and that's why
- 8:35Speaker 2: I was being reluctant to say the word Titans.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Well, I wish we could have Mike Rabel back. I
- 8:42Speaker 3: hope the Titans can do better. I'm urgually from Knoxville,
- 8:46Speaker 3: so more of a college football fan, but my husband
- 8:49Speaker 3: is from Baltimore, so we cheer for the Ravens usually.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Oh okay, see now full disclosure. That's okay.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I mean, you know, we could be fair weather. And
- 9:00Speaker 2: as long as as long as it's good, good fortune,
- 9:03Speaker 2: good music, good community, that's what it's all about, right.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Yeah, Absolutely, good sports, good music, good food. We have
- 9:11Speaker 3: it all.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Anything else you want to talk about in terms of
- 9:15Speaker 2: music around there or you think this one is just about.
- 9:18Speaker 3: A rap, Well, we talked about holiday music, rock music,
- 9:23Speaker 3: country music.
- 9:25Speaker 4: But if people are in.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Town and want to hear some jazz. Rudy's Jazz Room
- 9:30Speaker 3: is a great venue for that. It's open six nights
- 9:33Speaker 3: a week featuring different jazz groups. They have hot Club
- 9:39Speaker 3: Gypsy Jazz Thursday. Every Thursday, they have jazz swing music,
- 9:45Speaker 3: and they have really good food to a great Cajun
- 9:49Speaker 3: style menu.
- 9:51Speaker 2: So, Sarah Harrison, you've been there then, is that what
- 9:55Speaker 2: you're telling me?
- 9:55Speaker 1: You love that place.
- 9:57Speaker 3: I have great music, great food. I think it's a
- 10:00Speaker 3: must for anyone visiting.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I love that place too.
- 10:04Speaker 2: I hadn't heard about it, and one of the locals
- 10:07Speaker 2: when I was at a restaurant actually, they said, oh,
- 10:12Speaker 2: Julie over there sings at Rudy's. You should go check
- 10:15Speaker 2: that place out. So I was like, Okay, I'm going tonight.
- 10:19Speaker 2: So I went to Rudy's. I love the vibe, very
- 10:22Speaker 2: stripped back, but very cool, intimate And if someone hasn't
- 10:30Speaker 2: been to Rudy's, and if you've been to Nashville, you
- 10:33Speaker 2: must go.
- 10:34Speaker 3: So yeah, it gives you a little taste of New
- 10:36Speaker 3: Orleans and Nashville.
- 10:39Speaker 2: So we're gonna do our reach out to anybody who's
- 10:42Speaker 2: listening in the music community. If you've got a gig,
- 10:46Speaker 2: you want us to talk about in a venue you
- 10:48Speaker 2: want us to talk about, We're happy to do that.
- 10:51Speaker 2: We are an open book if it's all about Nashville.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Yeah, please let us know any shows you have coming up.
- 10:59Speaker 4: I will keep my you're out as well.
- 11:01Speaker 1: All right, well this is a wrap.
- 11:03Speaker 2: It's a concert calendar for the week of November seventeenth.
- 11:06Speaker 2: And Sarah Harrison, thanks for letting me poke my head
- 11:09Speaker 2: into taking a walk Nashville.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks for coming on Buzz
