- 0:01SPEAKER_02: I can't make my fingers like look a little heavy.
- 0:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, my TV is green.
- 0:11SPEAKER_02: He kept turning down these things that can be cutting into coming to them.
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: And then eventually he said, yes.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: And you can see in his face, it is like your like white population.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: Thank you for having me.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: How are you doing today?
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: I'm very well.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: Very well.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I walked here.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you live nice and close.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: I think you might be the closest guest that we've had today.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: I'm still catching my breath.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: There's a few people that record in here that that like live pretty close to here but as well.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: But like they yeah, I think your closest guest that we've had is excellent.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: That's that's my done.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I was telling you like my journey was not fun today.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: But like it's just I don't know what's going on at the moment, but yeah.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: It gave you time to watch the movie, which is important.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was saying to Rory last night, I watched the movie.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Uh I watched half of it, and I was like, I'm gonna watch the other half on the train on the way in.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: I'd seen how it was intended to be watched, to be honest.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: It's definitely a train watching film what we're gonna be discussing.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: It's not something to really I mean, I got cozy and watched it last night.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: I had a whole session of it, but I think you messaged me at like 10 o'clock as well, isn't it?
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like, oh yeah, we're still on.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: Because I need to I haven't seen this film in 15 years, so I better check that.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: I still like it.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: Is that how long since you've seen it?
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: Well, so I'm watching I'm watching them.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: Uh I wouldn't give it a do I give away what it is now or is there a is there a well I mean it'll be in the title, so I'd like to have a right fine, fine.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: So I I'm watching all the Bond movies in order at the moment.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: I'm a big, big Bond fan, so I'm I'm up to the Roger, I've just started the Roger Moore movies, I've just made my way through the the um Sean Conry's and the um the the singular George Lasenby one as well.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: Um and so I've skipped ahead, especially for this podcast, to Die Another Day, and then I'll go back to um to watch them sequentially.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: What one are you up to?
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: I'm up to I'm about to watch Live and Let Die, which is the very first Roger Moore one.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: Uh see the Roger Moore ones are the ones that I'm not super familiar with.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: Same.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: I think those are so I've even though I'm a fan, I feel like that's the one I think there's a couple I've missed, but I'm not sure which ones I've missed.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: So um I know the Sean Connery ones, I know.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: Do I know the George Lasen?
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: What's the George Lasenby one?
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: The singular George Lasenby one was um uh uh on Her Majesty's Secret Service.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: I don't think I've seen that either.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: It's bizarre, it's fantastic.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: It's the one that like when you're watching it, you're like, okay, this is the one that influenced Austin Powers because it's like swinging 60s kind of like uh Okay.
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: That makes sense.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: The plot is all about hypnosis and um cloning, and uh George Lasenby's acting is like bizarre because I think he wasn't an actor, I think he like bumped into like cubby broccoli and a barbers or something like that, and he's like, You look like Bond, and so they just made him Bond.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: So weird.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: He he was offered like an eight film deal after that as well, and he he turned his agent advised that he turn it down.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: What?
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: Um I was watching uh so like I'm such a weird nerd for Bond, but I was watching a Bond documentary the other night as well about George Laserby specifically on Her Majesty's Secret Service, and um he's he's still alive.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: Um so that he he was um being interviewed in it.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: And uh most of it is set like up the top of uh a Swiss mountain, and they were actually like stuck there for like a month or two filming this like ski sequence, and the ski sequences in it are actually like incredible, yeah.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: Um but they're in this like uh supervillains like Blofelds like hide out on the top of a mountain.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: And um he was asked to recall what that experience was like, and he was like, Oh, hated being stuck up on that mountain, and they were like, Why?
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: And he was like, Oh, I'd already shagged all the girls, I wanted to get down to the village and shag the rest of them.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: Well, he really was born.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: It was basically like he was like the true chauvinist, so yeah.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Jesus Christ.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: Arguably the perfect role.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: But unrepentant about it, like 60 years later as well.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: He hadn't he hadn't softened or changed his ways at all.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: Like I he came across as really awful.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I can imagine.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Like also, like it's so weird that he did the one and then never again.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: Was it that bad that he like was it was it bad or was it?
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: I I thought it was a great movie.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: Like it was it um it's so it's so weird, it doesn't fit anywhere else in like the Bond universe.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: It doesn't feel like any other Bond film.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: His performance is like completely different.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: It's the only one where he breaks the fourth wall as well at the start, which is like so shit.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: And it doesn't really make sense when he does it.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: It's like there's this big opening fight on the beach, um, and uh he it's like a henchman kind of thing, you know, it's like small stakes thing.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: He wins, obviously.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: The fights uh the fights are like notably slightly more violent than the Sean Connery era, so it's like okay, this is the direction they want to go with it.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but it's still that sort of like 70s.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: Is it this is a visual podcast, isn't it?
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: You know, the swings where they like wind them up like that in 70s movies and just like you know, proper like everything's like a massive uppercut.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: Um, and they're clearly not standing anywhere near to be like woo.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: It's that kind of thing, and they're fighting in the sea.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: Um, and he breaks the fourth wall, he looks down the camera and he goes, This never happened to the other guy.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: It's like, what fighting it happened in every Bond movie, so yes, it did.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: Constantly throughout every time he leaves the house, he's he's fighting someone.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: What do you mean it never happened to the other guy?
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: I don't think that was a good reason to like break the fourth wall for the first time.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Make it like an unbelievable, like unforgettable moment, but I think it was just like acknowledging for the first time like I'm a different man.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, imagine Daniel Craig doing that.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: That's never happened to Brosnan.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: That amazing beginning to like um Casino Royale as well.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: That's how they go into the the opening credits.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: He's getting wagged in the balls, he's like, ow.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: That's never happened to Brosnan.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: Although it didn't die another day, he did get tortured in that, just not in the balls.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: He does, yeah, yeah.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: Presumably in the balls if they just don't show it.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: He's like, uh oh god, like this this is the other thing about so we'll kind of get into it, but like I wanna I hadn't seen these I haven't seen I haven't seen the the Brosnan ones since maybe the census came out.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: I don't think I've I didn't I haven't gone back and watched especially this one and The World Is Not Enough I don't remember watching since they came out.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: I remember going to see them.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: And so like I I went to see I would have s since Tomorrow Never Dies, I would have gone to see them at the s all of them at the cinema.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: I remember.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: So like that's that's my so it was it was like on our era, like we're roughly the same age, aren't we?
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: So that like bro Piers Brosnan would have been like our bond growing up.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: And then so it was really weird seeing the difference in this, like going back and watching this now, like having knowing the Daniel Craig ones inside and out.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: No, I mean I and I think Die Another Day was kind of responsible for the direction that they took.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: Because it was Die Another Day was like the last silly bond.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: There will never be another silly bond.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: I don't think it's they'll feel like somewhat gritty, but like I don't know.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: I feel like they might go back to it now.
- 7:00SPEAKER_02: Well, with the with the like next reboot.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: I feel like it'll be lighter.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: It'll be lighter.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: I reckon they'll go for like a young bond or something.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: It'll be like proper like rebooty.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: Um they'll want to get in as many as they can so that they don't I don't want don't think they want so the other thing is Pierce Professor here is like 55 years old.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, in this one.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: And they struggle to hide it as well.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: Um it's yeah, I think um I I think if you're gonna like end the silly era as Bond was, because they it's like when people talk about Die Another Day, and like I was reading some reviews on it and that it went like too silly, yeah.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: There was never not a silly Bond, even all the way back to like Dr.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: No.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: It's a silly franchise, it's always it's never been like a serious thing that turns silly.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: It got maybe arguably more silly, but like if you're gonna go out on a on a silly one, that they went oh yeah, they went maximo silly for Die Another Day, it was fantastic.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: Like and it was like so like as with all Bond movies, it's like a time capsule of the whatever era it's filmed in, which is why I'm a fan of them as like a obviously working in the film industry and being a filmmaker, that's why I love Bond movies, is it's like a a microcosm of like British filmmaking um techniques and society at any given time when they come out, so it's like a little um a little archive of the time.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: I think Die Another Day is just like so naughty, it couldn't be more naughty.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: It's like right before Bourne.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: And you can really feel it.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: And you can tell that when Bourne came out, they were like, Oh, we should be gritty, yeah, like that.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like this is what people are wanting now.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: So Born kind of changed the um it changed the style a little bit, I think.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: It very much changed the style, yeah.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: And then like they were like, Oh, we have to get yeah, we have to go darker, we have to but we Born is gonna overtake us.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: Did you know that?
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: So apparently the original plan, so um Jinx, Halle Berry's character in it, they were gonna make they had 80 million to make a spin-off.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: I saw this, yeah.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: This movie.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: And they scrapped it and they made Casino Royale instead.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: Oh, I didn't know they scrapped it to make Casino Royale.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: They were not gonna continue with the Bond series, they were gonna make a Jinx spin-off from Die Another Day based on very little success and a very um odd forgettable character.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's the character, rather.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't think she's like the greatest character.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: The one that had to start like the first ever James Bond spin off after, like the thing I the thing I read was why they scrapped it was because she Halle Berry said that because it's because Charlie's Angels and uh Tomb Raider didn't didn't hit as well as they thought they would.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: And they were like, Well, we can't we we can't have uh another woman leading a film in an action film.
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: We tried two.
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: We can't possibly try a third.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: And also, like the thing is Charlie's Angels and Tomb Raider were both in profit.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: They didn't know.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: They didn't flop.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, true.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: So it's kind of crazy.
- 9:42SPEAKER_02: They're like they um I mean I using that money for Casino Royale, you kind of can't complain.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: Really.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: I mean, that was the right way to make it right decision.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: It's like one of the best Bon films.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: Should we just make the best film of all time?
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, in my opinion, there's not that's the best Bond film, hands down, Casino Royale, but it's also one or two for me.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like one of the best movies ever, as well.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's great.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: It's a really, really good one.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: It's so great.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: The only one there's only one Daniel Craig one that I don't like, and it's um Quantum of Solis.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: That's the one that people don't like.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: I'm the other way around, so I people sometimes don't like Spectre, and I uh Spectre is one that like I won't like I will always enjoy a Bond film over watching no Bond films, like I'm never not in the mood for one.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: Um, but Spectre is is is steam and garbage.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: Oh okay, yeah.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: Interesting.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: Spectre for me is like it's fine, it's not bad, it's not good.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: It's like somewhere in the middle, it's very forgettable.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: Whereas Quantum of Solace, I do not like.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: Quantum of Solace has a really bad, like a really just boring villain.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: But you didn't try anything with him, he's just a man.
- 10:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: But it had some sequences in it I really liked, and I really like the sort of like the like the fire at the end, like the fight in the throat of the fire, I thought was like quite a like classic Dangocratic moment and like ambitious.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, there's some good moments in it.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, it's it's more enjoyable to like watch.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: It's definitely a forgettable storyline, but like um I mean in terms of like what the worst the actual worst Bond film is, I think for me it's either it's either Spectre or like Thunderball, I think, is like and they tried to make Thunderball like three times in the in the sixties.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: I think like it was initially meant to be the first one that they released instead of Doctor No, and then there was some sort of issue with it.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: And then they had some sort of weird licensing issue where like two people own the rights to different Bond books.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, there was that like tear away.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there was there was one that was like um it was a Sean Connery movie, but it wasn't canon with the the Eon productions.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: It's called um um Never Say Never Again.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: I didn't know that wasn't that's like not canon.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: That's like I didn't know that wasn't canon.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: But it's also got Sean Connery, yeah.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: That's really confusing.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: When does that ever happen to be a big thing?
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: Because also that's such a one like Yeah, yeah.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: It's like um fucking Tom Holland going off and doing a Spider-Man film that isn't a Sony one.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: Um wait, is it no, they're not Sony ones, are they?
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: Marvel.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: Whatever.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: So it's but Sony is Marvel.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's both.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they combine, it's confusing.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: I can't keep up.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: They combine them like Sony owned the rights, but they uh Marvel like essentially like rent it from them.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: I see.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: But Sony take like the profit from the Spider-Man section of it.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: That was an awful example for me then.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: So that's it.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: No, that's a very confusing, that's a very, very confusing system.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: Also, I guess that exact thing happened, didn't it?
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: There was literally three Spider-Mans in one movie from different franchises, so that's probably the worst example I could have possibly given us to when it is.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: When it comes to Marvel's, like there's there's no point even like trying to work it out what's going on.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: There's also like the Fox and X-Men, and there's like it's very confusing.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: Marvel Studio has now like bought back the rights to so much stuff.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: So I think I just want to see it pass around everywhere.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: Everyone should have a turn.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that'd be really funny.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: There's always like a different different guy playing him.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: ITV's Craven the Hunter.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: I would love that.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: Channel channel five's take on um on Batman.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: Channel five's take on Batman would be amazing.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: Have you seen like Indian Indian Batman and like uh no, it's Indian Spider-Man and like Turkish Batman?
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: Oh, I haven't seen Turkish Batman.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's so funny.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: That's so funny.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: Who would who would play Channel 5 um Batman?
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: Channel 5 Batman.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: Well, it's Gofield.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: Self-shot.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: On his phone just someone needs me.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: No, they don't.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: Let it go.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna save a child.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: God, that was how we uh being his defense.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: I was just saving him.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: Oh god, one of one of my favourite things.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: So so I've worked with Rory before when when you were doing what but this is actually like I is the show that you're doing now Can you explain the show you're doing now, actually?
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: Because it is it similar to what I worked with you on the video.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, conceptually it's basically the same thing, but it's the version that I've kind of always intended on it being um now that I've got like a bit of production.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it's it's fully produced this time.
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: Oh amazing.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: I've had a little a little chunk of like funding towards it and stuff, so I've I've managed to do it.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: Um I always envisioned it with like a set piece and things like that.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: Proper costumes and like proper film, because it's like a film live hybrid thing.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: Um but I didn't want to be just like another comedian with like a projector, essentially.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: I wanted to make it a bit more snazzy.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: So it's called on TV.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: The version that we worked on together was was called Television One.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:20SPEAKER_02: Television one was kind of like the just the like the whipped version of on TV, I would say.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: So it was like such a fun show.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: I I really I really, really enjoyed it.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: I appreciate it.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, going going through like all of the old footage for it now, I'm like I'm very pleased with the um evolution of it.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Like the new footage is is looking really, really great.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: I'm really happy with it.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: Um it's now screened on a stack of like seven TVs.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: So we had like the singular projector before.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: But now I've got this like TV wall.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's amazing.
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: The TVs are all popping off doing different things, they're all like looking um uh like appropriate for each era of TV that they're representing.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: So we're still having from the 50s, and we go to like the present day.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and every decade is a new sketch in like British TV history, similar to what we were doing before, essentially.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: Uh but there's now this central character as well who's like a it's called Bo Krem.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: Bo Krem, yeah, yeah.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: I can't he I I think an early version of him existed.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: Like um, he wasn't in the very first version of the show, that was just like a sketch show, and then like um we kind of added this like storyline of like someone who was present through all the eras of of television, and it's like we sort of witnessed the like um him becoming uh less relevant as his career goes on.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: But he's sort of like an amalgamation of Philip Schofield again, yeah.
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: Uh Noel Edmonds is the obvious thing.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: That was the that was the one yeah, that's why I remember it as not being Noel Edmonds.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: Um uh Jonathan Ross as well, like people like that, um, and like Chris Tarrant, all those sorts of people from that kind of era.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: So perfect.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: Who were like so big at the time.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: I mean Jonathan Ross is still big, but um uh yeah, nothing to the level he was, though.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's all like you know, these it was based kind of like on a um Jonathan Ross um uh retrospective on toys.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Did you ever see that?
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: Used to come out every Christmas.
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: Um so stylistically it's kind of like that, but instead of toys he's talking about TV history.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: Oh, amazing.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: So it's yeah, it's looking really good.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: Um excited.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, one of the reasons I brought it up was because like you were talking about like Phillips Grofield and like and just reminding me of like not the Noel Edmonds, like but Bo Krem, which is like very Noel Edmonds, and like those those kind of characters, just so funny.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: There's something so funny about them that's just like ridiculous.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: Like, I mean Noel Edmonds is like he's like it's been difficult to sort of catch up on the absurdity of Noel Edmonds and make him more absurd than the actual man.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's so much there's so much to him, isn't it?
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: Did you see that documentary?
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: The um the since he moved to New Zealand and the ITV released like a three-part documentary.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: I didn't even know he moved to New Zealand.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: Oh, so uh the story as to why he moved to New Zealand is hilarious.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: He basically he obviously he's been a man of like comebacks over and over and over again in his career, and he after Deal and Odeal uh ended, he kind of like drifted into obscurity again, wasn't getting work.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: And um he kept turning down these things, they kept inviting him to go on things like I'm a celebrity and he didn't want to do it, he thought it was like beneath him.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then eventually he said yes because he thought it was actually gonna be like rehabilitate his career, and he goes on and he comes dead last.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I remember that immediately by a landslide, and you can see in his face it is like pure, like white hot rage that he can like barely contain, and then he has to do that like exit interview with Ant and Deck, and he's trying to pretend it's all okay, and then like months later, he leaves the UK forever and hasn't come back since because he was just so hurt by the whole thing, and um yeah, and then they made him taken over.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: He lost everything, but now he's he's like so he runs a pub in um New Zealand.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: Rice and they made a like what was billed as a travel documentary, it's clearly not a travel documentary, it's a look at this guy documentary, it's like a a study of a very strange man.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: Anything about New Zealand.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, genuinely.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: Apart from like how the residents hate him and like he's like destroying the land and everything.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: He's like he he's like, um, there's all this like planning permission stuff that like is it's like him versus the the local residents and stuff.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: Um and he built this.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: Uh I would recommend Googling this as well, right?
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: To to look at it.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: It's um this statue that is like so much bigger than an average statue.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: It's this gigantic statue of a kneeling knight like this that is depicting his battle with like I think it was he is like beating his manager who was like um who embezzled him 20 years ago or something like that and taking him to court and beating him.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: And there's this little plaque on it, and it's about like um one single knight's journey to like beating true evil and things like that, that he's just dumped in like the this beautiful museum countryside.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: No, it's it's just this knight that like represents like in his in armour.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: Um I can't emphasize how gigantic this statue is.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: I've really got this like it's I'll I'll throw up the picture on the screen.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: Like, dude, it's it's so funny and it's so sincere.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: And the plaque as well is just like why would anyone in New Zealand care about like a British celebrity's embezzlement battle?
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: And also, no one here will even care.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: No, exactly.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: It doesn't warrant a statue.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: I think it shows just how rich he is as well.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: He's like he's he's crazy rich, so he's just got I don't know.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: He just dominated TV for so long.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's just been since like what the 80s is it uh the 70s, I think.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: So in the 70s he was um uh he he sort of like conquered radio first, and um in the 80s he did the Late Late Breakfast show.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh, which is the one where they like killed a guy.
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: Do you know the story of that?
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, so they didn't like you wanted to do it like telephone.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, they No, sorry, if you know it, it's fine.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: Um so basically they used to bring on um members of the public to do stunts, and they would give them about two, three days to learn a really dangerous stunt, and then the whole bit of it would be um uh they would put them on TV live doing this stunt for the first time.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: And it was like no small feat.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: It was people like driving cars through hoops um over buses, it was people bungee jumping off of stuff, and like it was just really, really fucking dangerous stuff.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: And um sure enough, someone died.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: Um like the the carabiner snapped on a bungee jumper and he it wasn't live, it was during the rehearsal, but um uh apparently it just failed so many like really, really basic, obvious safety uh things.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: The guy who went up had had two pints, he was wearing like they said he was wearing wet socks was all he was in.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: I was like, why was he he was like climbing this ladder in like wet socks?
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: Um the carabiner was like something you get from Poundland, essentially.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: So just on clip straight away.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: There was just like nothing.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: It was mental.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: Um and then Noel Edmonds like his career somehow survived.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: Um he came back and he did um Noel's house party.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh, which is actually Mr.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: Blobby and stuff at the first time.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: That's actually insane.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: It's so mental how he survived.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: Like the the that was the eighties.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: That was the yes, I I think it was the late 70s, early 80s, the the later director show, yeah.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: It just reminded me of the story.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Do you know the do you know the John Landis story?
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: You know John Landis?
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: That rings a bell, remember?
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: He's a director.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Uh he directed like uh so I'll tell you what he directed afterwards because uh it's integral to the story, but like basically like there was a Twilight Zone movie being made in the 80s, I think it was like 82, maybe 82 or something like that.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: Um very early 80s, but basically he he was one of so they were making segments of it, and like each director was like Spielberg was part of it and like all of this stuff.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: John Landers was making this one segment, he was filming it in I think Cambodia or Vietnam but there was supposed to be a sequence with um uh a helicopter and it was and it was like an explosions and everything going on.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: Filming it at night, they had no permits, they were way over time, all of this stuff.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: The helicopter crashes, kills the people inside, kills two kids as well, I believe, and nothing happens.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Nothing happens whatsoever.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Um he goes on.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: To direct thriller?
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: Okay now.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: Trading places.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: Coming to America.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: Well, at least I know what to do if I want my career to take off.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: Just you need blood on your hands.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: He goes on to direct every like and this is like only a couple years later he's going on to direct all this stuff.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: What was the movie that with the accident?
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: Uh The Twilight Zone.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: Although it was the just and the film still comes out.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: I've never heard that before.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: It's absolutely insane.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: How was it buried?
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: Was it just like it was it wasn't even I don't think it was even buried.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: It was just like nothing came of it.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: It's just the 80s, and like that was kind of the thing with with the Lele Breakfast Show as well, is it like in the end, the the entire consequence of that whole thing was the BBC got fined like£2,000 or something like that.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: And like no no one went to prison, no one uh lost their jobs or anything like that.
- 22:51SPEAKER_02: It was just like BBC got like a tiny little slap on the wrist, and then um I think they changed uh the rules forever after that in terms of like health and safety, but that was kind of the only consequence.
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: Um there's this mad clip online you can you can find as well of um uh Noel Edmonds.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: Um it's a different stunt.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: So it was basically the one that like uh set people's like red flags off before the the uh the death happened a few years uh a few weeks later.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: Um it was a a car jumping over like 20 other cars and they try it twice with members of the public.
- 23:25SPEAKER_02: The first one it crashes so badly, it's like it's like this tight it looks like it can't possibly go fast enough to make the jump.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: Like it actually looks impossible.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: It's like the camera pans over and there's like 50 cars, it makes about five of them, and it flips and it rolls, and there's spectators, like just more members of the public there, and it rolls into the crowd.
- 23:45SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 23:45SPEAKER_02: Everyone has like run out of the way.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: The guy I think like broke his like neck and his collarbones, like broke every bunch of lungs and stuff.
- 23:52SPEAKER_02: Um cuts back to Noel Edmonds and he's like, Um, well, is he alright?
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: Looks alright.
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: Next week we've got Hugh Huey Lewis in the news coming on the show.
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: He just cuts away and he's just like just pure presenter mode.
- 24:04SPEAKER_02: There's no like no empathy there.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: He's got no empathy whatsoever like that.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: That man is insane.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: They clear the track and then they do it again.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: No again in the same show.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: Does it fail immediately again?
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: I think the second one fails as well.
- 24:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think they crash, but they're just like less badly.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: But Jesus Christ.
- 24:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, mental.
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: Absolutely mental.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: What is wrong?
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: What is wrong with But yeah, there's like that's part of what I part of what I really enjoyed about uh when it was what what was it called?
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: What's the original show show I called it?
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: On television on television one?
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: Oh uh television one, television one, yeah, yeah.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: Television one.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um part of what I really enjoyed about that was just like how deep into like the psyche you went through.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what of the nation, yeah, yeah.
- 24:49SPEAKER_02: But that's that's kind of what TV is, I think, which is why I like it.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: Like TV is just like an archive of like of um of attitudes and as again it like ties in as to why I like Bond films, it's the same thing.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: It's like it's it's attitudes of the time, it's uh like the the technology of the time, um, it's uh like the sort of creative mindsets of the time and um uh stars of the time as well.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: It's like you know, if like Noel Lemons appeared out of nowhere now, there's like he'd be like washing dishes somewhere, like he'd just be doing nothing.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: Um but uh doing like magic shows or something like that sort of like head.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: Um he would, yeah.
- 25:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:27SPEAKER_02: But I just yeah, I love I love going like deep into like I I think for like UK TV as well, it's like we've got a lot of like strange history in the U.S.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: We do, yeah.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: Like UK TV, like when you when you really go back, it's like mad.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: It's really weird.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: And it's like it's uh when you compare it to US TV as well, they they kind of like improved very quickly in the US, I think.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:45SPEAKER_02: Um especially around the sort of like 60s and 70s, they were making like genuinely really, really good stuff.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: And then we were still fucking about with like you know, wooden puppets that were like being operated by like some old matron for kids.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: Like it was like kids TV was like it was being made by people who had heard of children but never seen one.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: So that's how it felt.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: Like, oh, this'll do.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: My favorite one, you were talking about this on uh Rich Folcher's one, actually.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, you were talking about the elephant yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: So uh that that was that was another like health and safety rule that came in, I think, because of that that moment.
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: It was like the first uh that I know of, like one of the first ever like uh disasters with an animal on on um on TV.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: It's what it's why I love like I mean I love John Noakes, I parody John Noakes in the show, which um is quite similar to the version that you will have seen actually.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: So it's just like adapted a bit.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: Um and my gag of him is it's it's a John Noakes type, and he just keeps getting hurt, and he's trying to keep the show together, um, and his life just keeps getting worse and worse, but he just never drops the tone of this, like um, well, we're on blue pita and um coming up, we've got colouring corner.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: You know, he cuts away to like the the dog is like, well, let's see what the dog's doing in the um in the garden outside, and the dog's dead because it's eating something, and then like he's just trying to hold it together.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: Um, but it's basically what John Noakes was like in in real life.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: It was just like um, no matter how small the thing, it didn't even have to be like an elephant coming on.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: So, like in that, like the elephant comes on, like stands on his foot and like shits everywhere.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: Um, but there was one I was watching the other day, I found a clip that just like popped up, and it was um they had like an automated, like an early automated tennis uh machine, which like similar to what you have now, you just feed balls in, it's coming out.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: He just goes onto the tennis court that they've set up in the um Blue Peter studio, and uh he just takes one straight to the ribs, and his reaction is so like he goes flying off the screen, he like screams at the top of his lungs.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: He's just getting hurt all the time.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: There's another one where he's like um uh they put him as like a hooker in a rugby scrum as well, and he just gets completely mangled because he's like absolutely tiny and really frail.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: There's one again.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: This is this is like testament to the strangeness of like the the day, I think, when they're talking about like new trends and what like new games and stuff and what everyone's gonna be doing over the summer.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: Have you seen this clip of like um it's the two of them, the two main presenters, um Peter Purvis, who's like much, much bigger than John Noakes.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: They uh get in a barrel each and they just blindfold each other and whip each other with rhubarb.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: What?
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: And that's just the game.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: This was supposed to be a new game that being.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: It was like a game that was apparently gonna be like the next big thing, was just like standing in a barrel, which how many people had access to like massive barrels and whipping each other with rhubarb, which I guess is kind of like if you like really whip it.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: And um uh uh John Noakes is is just like getting whipped so hard with this root.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: He's clearly in a lot of pain.
- 28:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Peter Burv is just like taking his taking all his frustrations out on him.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: Why is this game?
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: I don't know why why why would they think it's like they're playing it's so there's such a bizarre element to it as well, is like they're playing it like it's Marco Polo.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so one of them has to say a word, and the word for some reason is people, I remember.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: So they're standing standing in barrels, they have to say people with blindfolds, or the other one has to say people, or they've got blindfolds on, and then bass, but they're not it's not like Marco Polo where you could be like anywhere in a smoke.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: You're right dead in front of each other in a barrel, you can't go anywhere.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: So he's just going straight ahead every time and he's getting him.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, it's um it's online, look it up.
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: It's yeah, definitely look it up.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, I wonder to what degree the the producers at the time found it funny as well.
- 29:22SPEAKER_02: They were like, Oh, we're gonna put him in this situation.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: He's definitely that kind of person, they're like, Oh, we've got to put him in each one of them.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're gonna shoot you out of a cannon this week, John.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: It's funny because then it like moved into so you got that, and then you kind of moved into like the Richard Magley kind of person.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: Which then became Alan Partridge.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: That's the thing is like Alan Partridge, I think, has a claim to a lot of like that kind of character.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: So I was I was like, I need to make this like distinct from from that because he just I mean Alan Partridge is just like also transcended the character, he just feels like a guy who's like working in the in the business now.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: He's as bizarre as the rest of them.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I kind of I just associate him with like those guys.
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, genuinely.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, but Richard Maidley just makes me laugh so much.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I would just love Richard, just the whole thing of like Richard Maidley in conversation with Noel Edmonds.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: I just love to see that.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: Just get them all in the room.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like the Spider-Man meme.
- 30:26SPEAKER_02: They're all, I mean, obviously like studying those characters as well.
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: I've got a director and like kind of like the the the movement of how they move.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: They all have like very heavy, like they're all like very finger-waggy characters or something they all had in common.
- 30:37SPEAKER_02: Like Chris Tarrant did it.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: Chris Tarrant, yeah, thick, sausagey, like big, waggy, heavy fingers.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: I can't make my fingers like look and feel as heavy as they were.
- 30:46SPEAKER_02: They were like, it was something you see, and all like he does it in deal or no deal a lot.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: He's very like finger pointy.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, it's a very specific kind of movement.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's really interesting.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: Oh, of course you've got to study their movements.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, genuinely.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: I was looking at like a Chris Tarrant interview, and he's like the whole time he's talking like this.
- 31:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he does that.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: My favourite interview with him was um during the when he was judging the curry awards.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: Have you seen that?
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: No.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: Who who better to judge it?
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: And he goes, Um, I've got to find I gotta just find the clip because it's so funny.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: Was he the sole judge of this, or was he like part of the judge?
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: I just don't want you to see what he actually says there.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: Okay, great.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: I love it already.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: And I'm sitting on the table with like David Cameron and Trevor McDonald thinking, how much bigger can we get?
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: You know, next year, Obama.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: You know, Obama! I love curry, Obama!
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: I mean This isn't Obama impression.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: It's a bummer impression is coming, Obama, I love curry.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: Not even saying it right, Obama.
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: That being sincerely how Obama judges a curried country.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: He says Obama, I love curry.
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, that is that in a bottle is exactly why I love a certain like I don't know if we have we like we kind of do have presenters like that, but they're from they're still from that that past yeah.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, they have to be.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: We're not getting new guys.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: We don't, we don't get those new guys.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: I think the last one was like I think the last ones are like Vernon Kay and Yeah.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:27SPEAKER_02: Um that's probably it, actually.
- 32:29SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, Vernon Kay, like and even they were like, they weren't as bizarre.
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: No, they're not as bizarre.
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: They're still weird.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: He's very presentery.
- 32:37SPEAKER_02: Like I've I've um I've worked for Vernon Kay a few times actually.
- 32:39SPEAKER_02: Oh really?
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, on on um uh like day job stuff.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: Um and he's he's very like presentery, yeah.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: Like the whole time.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: It's like it's it's impressive to watch.
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: Um like you can talk to anyone and seem interested, which I think is like a real unbelievable skill.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that is a skill.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: Um, but like, yeah, some of these I I feel like that that brand of man can't make it in this business.
- 33:04SPEAKER_02: No, it's just a bygone era, it just won't exist anymore.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: And it was how big they were, yeah, as well.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: It was like they they um there wasn't even like a specific kind of show that they would host.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: It was just sort of any old thing.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: Like it was just they were just like a star, and that was enough.
- 33:22SPEAKER_02: Like it's mad, like absolutely mad.
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: They're they're fascinating.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, Noel Emmons especially is just a fascinating person.
- 33:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I find him so interesting.
- 33:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:31SPEAKER_02: He's I mean, I definitely watched that New Zealand thing.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: There's like you get to see his wife giving him like crystal baths and stuff, and like yeah, that's the other thing about it.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: It's just like all the spirituality.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's unbelievable.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: Which is how he which is like what deal or no deal became at the start, wasn't it?
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: I think it was why it succeeded because I think without that it just wouldn't have taken off.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: Because like like they really sold it, he really sold it on uh was it what was the what was the book that he was selling that he was like really promoting around the when it became was it one of his own books?
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: No, no, he promoted like a book as the reason he got into it or something like that.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: Oh really?
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: Interesting, yeah, yeah.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: Like the power of now or something like that.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, somewhere one of them.
- 34:08SPEAKER_02: Some pile of horseshit.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: It's like this is what got like if you just believe But um I mean if it without that, like the show is guessing numbers in a box, it's like it's a really bad game.
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: There's like there's no skill to it whatsoever.
- 34:21SPEAKER_02: So you have to bring in like some sort of like uh spirituality or like belief system into it.
- 34:26SPEAKER_02: So Noel Edmonds is like the only choice for that.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: I think he definitely truly believed it as well.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: I think but like I mean, the the some of the spirituality stuff has made it into like my version of him in the show.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the orbs and everything.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: I remember the orbs, yeah, yeah.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: So the the orbs are back in this version.
- 34:41SPEAKER_02: Um, this is something that Noel Edmonds really uh truly believes is he's got these two like celestial orbs that like float over his shoulders, um, but you can't see them, only he can see them.
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: Um he says they sometimes show up in in photographs, and I'm like, I think that's lens flare, but like um it's it's it's his parents apparently watching over him, which is kind of nice, but like it's it's also like they're just I like that.
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I like that a lot.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: And they grant him his superhuman strength.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: That's so funny.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: Um okay, so let's let's talk about this uh this film then.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: So it's like so Die Another Day, the final Pierce Frosnan.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: What a way to go out.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: What a way to go out.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: 55% on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: 41% from audience though.
- 35:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, even less from audience.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: Less from audience, which is surprising.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: That is a but that's it's usually the other way around, isn't it?
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: It is usually the other way around.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: And I'm very surprised I was very surprised by this score.
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: Uh uh well not so much the critics one.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: I kind of expected that for that, but yeah, the audience score I'm very surprised by it.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: Do you know where so where do you think it ranks on on the of the Bond movies on the on the score there?
- 35:49SPEAKER_02: I always thought it was Dead Last.
- 35:51SPEAKER_02: I thought it was like famously the ones that come up are either Quantum of Solace or Die Another Day, but it's neither of those.
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: That's not I it's not my my personal opinion, but like I do think it does.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what is your personal opinion?
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: Which one did you say?
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: My personal opinion is the w the worst two Bond films for me at Thunderball, it's just really long, underwater, boring sequences.
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: They killed a bunch of sharks in production, like in real life, they're like harpoon real sharks, which is just like really upsetting to see.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: Um and they did this weird thing where they like speed up Sean Connery for the fight scenes.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: So he's you know the early ones where the fight scenes are just him chopping at all.
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: Like it's just that, but like in double speed, and it looks it looks sped up, it looks absolutely terrible, rather than just making Sean Connery move twice as fast.
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: Um so a terrible, like bad villain, boring plot and everything.
- 36:39SPEAKER_02: So Thunderbolt for me is one of one of the worst, uh one of the biggest drags.
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: And then like a Spectre, I thought was like I think Daniel Craig was the best bond.
- 36:45SPEAKER_02: I think the Daniel Craig era was the best bond era, but like uh Spectre was just like very forgettable and boring to me.
- 36:52SPEAKER_02: I I didn't really like Christoph Waltz's blowfelt as well.
- 36:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, interesting.
- 36:55SPEAKER_02: I actually liked him as well.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I liked that.
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: I don't think I needed to see another blowfell, to be honest.
- 37:00SPEAKER_02: I think I could have.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: I understand that, but yeah.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I didn't mind I quite liked him as as Bloomfeld though.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: Um Thunderball is actually sick.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: That is that's the thing, it's one of the most popular ones.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: It's 85% madness, it's terrible.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: Die Another Day is out of 27 Bond films, is 22nd.
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: Still taking up the rear.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: Not the worst Piers Brosnan.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: In my opinion, it's not the worst Piers Brosnan.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: The worst I I would say the world is not enough is worse.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: Right below it.
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: Right below it.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: That's actually correct.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: I thought that was just a personal opinion, but No, I would agree with that as well.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: Uh but right above it, more and everything.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: So he's got three of them in sequence.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: Like he 21, 22, 23.
- 37:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:48SPEAKER_02: He does often come like the second bottom of the worst ever bonds.
- 37:50SPEAKER_02: George Lasenby is usually the bottom for his one.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: So the worst rated Bond film.
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: Well So here's the thing, they got Casino Royale, the original one on there.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: That didn't count.
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's that's non that's non-canon, actually.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: The worst the worst actual Bond film on here is a view to kill.
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: And then the man with the golden gun.
- 38:15SPEAKER_01: The world is not enough, die another day.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: Oh, so Piers Brosnan is pretty like clear of the bottom.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: They're all all the all the bad ones are Roger Moore ones.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Is a view to a kill Roger Moore or Timothy Dalton?
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: Uh Roger Moore, the Christopher Walken one.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: Oh yes, interesting.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: I don't think I don't know that I've seen that one actually.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: I think that's maybe one that's uh I think I might have seen I think I might have seen it.
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: I'll with withhold judgment until my marathon is is over and I've seen all of them, and then I can I can give my definitive score list and line it up against this one.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: And also Spectre is the worst Daniel Craig on here.
- 38:49SPEAKER_02: That again, that's correct.
- 38:50SPEAKER_02: Damn, I thought it was coming on with like a a really edgy, unpopular opinion.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: Spectre and Quantum of Solace have a high score.
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: Time.
- 38:59SPEAKER_02: I I think Quantum of Solace is significantly better than Spectre.
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: I didn't realise Spectre was rated so low.
- 39:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I remember it.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: I remember when it came out, it was it was panned a bit because it felt a bit like everything in the kitchen sink, kind of vibes.
- 39:15SPEAKER_02: It wasn't yeah, I don't know.
- 39:18SPEAKER_02: It just didn't have like much character to it.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: Timothy Dalton's one, Living Daylights, number 13.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: Right in the middle.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: That's a good one.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: Right in the middle.
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: That is a good one.
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: I th both the Timothy Dalton Dalton ones are good.
- 39:28SPEAKER_02: Um License Care is the one.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's that's a that's a really fun one.
- 39:33SPEAKER_01: Uh Lazens Lazenbee's one is number nine.
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: That is apparently like it aged well.
- 39:40SPEAKER_02: Like in high like it it was panned at the time and it's it's become like a classic.
- 39:43SPEAKER_02: It's quite aged.
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: It is the most ridiculous one.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: Have you seen that one, the George Lasenby one?
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: I don't think I have.
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: The the final battle is um him versus like that version of Blofeld, who I think was only Blofeld for that one film.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: Um having what has been choreographed like they're fighting on a train, essentially, like on the top of a moving train, except they're on a bobsled.
- 40:07SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's great.
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: And it's two of them on one bobsled, and like Blofeld is in it, and then James Bond is on top of it.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: And they're filming it like there's all this room to maneuver and everything, and then it ends with Blofeld getting stuck in a tree at the end, like it's like a Looney Tunes thing.
- 40:19SPEAKER_02: Like you haven't seen the last of me.
- 40:25SPEAKER_02: Uh it's so silly, but that that film is is bizarre, but it's it's uh it is super enjoyable.
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: Can you guess number one?
- 40:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, it should be Casino Royale, but it's probably from Russia with Love.
- 40:35SPEAKER_01: From Russian with Love is number two.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: Ooh.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: Is it Goldfinger?
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: Goldfinger.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: Goldfinger is 99%.
- 40:42SPEAKER_02: To be fair, Goldfinger is so so good.
- 40:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean that he he remains the best villain in the whole series.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: I think he's he's incredible.
- 40:49SPEAKER_02: They were gonna make a Goldfinger 2 with the same guy, and it was meant to be his twin brother coming back.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: That's fun.
- 40:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:55SPEAKER_01: That's that's very bond as well.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, genuinely.
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: Uh it's Goldfinger from Russia with love.
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: Dr.
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: No, Casino Royale.
- 41:03SPEAKER_02: Dr.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: No is great.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: Skyfall.
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, Casino Royale is just the the best.
- 41:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:09SPEAKER_02: It is the best Bond film.
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: It's Casino Royale and Skyfall for me.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: Like those are the two.
- 41:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:13SPEAKER_02: Skyfall is definitely like is is perfect as well.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: The only thing with Skyfall is it's a little bit fan service-y with like yeah, that's that's look at all the like the British Bulldogs we've put in this in this movie and the the Union Jacks, and yeah, it's a little bit like that.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: Although Die Another Day was like that as well because it was like the 20th or 30th anniversary or something.
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: It was the third 40th.
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that makes more sense than the 40th.
- 41:38SPEAKER_02: 20th one films, 40th anniversary.
- 41:40SPEAKER_02: Yes, that's it, yeah, yeah.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: Um so they put they put in a bunch of I think they put in 20 references to the thing.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: There was I spotted a couple, they like had the shoe with the knife that comes out from Russia with Love, and Piers Brosnan smells it for something just like as a little a little funny gag.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:59SPEAKER_02: They had the jetpack as well from um uh that was from one of the early John Connery ones, I can't remember which one, but yeah.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: Um what so one of the so the criticism of this film is that so people people say the film is good, it just relies too much on uh CGI and gimmicky stuff like that.
- 42:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, again, I would say if you want something that's a product of its zero, which you want a James Bond film to be, yeah, everything was CGI back then.
- 42:25SPEAKER_02: I like I want to see like a CGI like heavy But it's such bad CGI as well.
- 42:30SPEAKER_02: I feel like it wasn't noticeably bad until the uh right at the very end.
- 42:33SPEAKER_02: The very end where he's like surfing.
- 42:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was gonna say that's the worst thing.
- 42:36SPEAKER_02: It's like this like just like blank man on the thing, just like it's like something we could make easily now, like on a green screen in this room.
- 42:45SPEAKER_02: I was thinking this when I was when I was re-watching it last night, I was like, a lot of these sequences I feel like I can actually make.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: And which is crazy, isn't it?
- 42:52SPEAKER_02: Because it's only 20 years old.
- 42:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like I mean like the the uh like ice caps falling down and stuff, it felt like they just cut out like a still image of it and just like animated the the mountains to fall down in a straight line.
- 43:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:04SPEAKER_02: Um, but also I it's funny, like um it's a classic thing of like old movies in general, but like Bond movies as well, where like they're like in all the early Sean Connery ones, it took them a while to make it look like Sean Connery was actually driving a car, a car chase.
- 43:18SPEAKER_02: It was he so obviously wasn't like the road would like bend lows and he was just going straight.
- 43:22SPEAKER_02: Um they're never like breaking a sweat when they're like in these like the cars doing crazy things and then they're just like completely blank inside.
- 43:30SPEAKER_02: Um, and it struck me that like all the way up to the very last film of the Piers Brosnan era, they still couldn't make him look like he was doing the thing that he was supposed to be doing.
- 43:37SPEAKER_02: Like they would cut to him, clearly not like out sailing or whatever, clearly not like water skiing.
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: Um, I was like, was Daniel Craig the very first Bond who actually looked like he was doing the stuff that he was supposed to be doing?
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: Like because then you look at Casino Royale and he's like so it's so stunt heavy and he so it really feels real.
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: I think he did a lot of that himself as well.
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: But like, I mean, even when they do replace.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: With stunt like it never it never looks like it's not which it makes me feel like the leap between Die Another Day and Casino Royale when it came out of the time, it must have been so like and it's only a four-year leap.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: It's a four-year gap.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: I thought it was six years, but I it looked up less than I thought.
- 44:14SPEAKER_02: Because I always thought Die Another Day was like bang on 2000 because it feels like a Y2K movie.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: It does it feels like an Atomic Kitten album cover looks.
- 44:22SPEAKER_01: That's exactly it.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: But I think, yeah, because it's it's the only one, it's the only Pierce Brosnum one post-2000, though.
- 44:29SPEAKER_01: So because World is not enough is 99, and then this is 2002.
- 44:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, so there's a little bit of a gap between those two.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: I wonder if he was like persuaded to come back if he wanted to like finish.
- 44:38SPEAKER_02: I think they were just like, please finish it.
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: Please do this mental one.
- 44:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:42SPEAKER_01: Like I mean that's well maybe they waited because they wanted to release it on the 40th anniversary.
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: That makes sense.
- 44:49SPEAKER_02: Probably that's probably what it was.
- 44:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, so they can get all these references in that like half of them were easily missed.
- 44:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: And I don't think most people care.
- 44:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, everything about it was like I felt everything was like consistent to itself, which is quite rare for a Bond movie.
- 45:04SPEAKER_02: It wasn't being like pulled in all sorts of different directions.
- 45:06SPEAKER_02: It had a real visual style and it stuck with it.
- 45:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: And that like the music was it was like this like electronic efficiency.
- 45:14SPEAKER_02: So of the time it's like all of the like when the Bond theme comes in, it's that but like with a big beat drum and like a slight remix element to it and everything.
- 45:21SPEAKER_02: Obviously, you've got Madonna doing the soundtrack, and she's in it as well.
- 45:25SPEAKER_02: Oh god.
- 45:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, one of the worst scenes in the film.
- 45:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's in it for like 10 seconds.
- 45:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:30SPEAKER_02: And um, I mean, I the the theme, I'd be interested to know what you think of the theme.
- 45:34SPEAKER_02: I think it's one of the best Bond themes ever.
- 45:36SPEAKER_02: I think it's really memorable.
- 45:37SPEAKER_01: This is the thing, yeah.
- 45:38SPEAKER_01: I do I agree with you.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, everything I've read about it, people hated it.
- 45:42SPEAKER_02: We hated it so much.
- 45:43SPEAKER_02: Elton John was like, this is the worst thing ever.
- 45:45SPEAKER_02: I remember being, I don't know how old I was when it was 2002, I would have been 11 when this movie came out.
- 45:50SPEAKER_02: I was jam into that on my sick.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: This is way better than like some of the Daniel Craig ones.
- 45:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and like the whole um the Daniel Craig ones, apart from the Chris Cornell uh one for Casino Royale, were quite bad, I thought.
- 46:05SPEAKER_01: Billy Eilish's one was quite good.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: Um and then Adele as well.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: But I don't I don't I don't really like the Adele one.
- 46:11SPEAKER_02: No, I don't like the Sam Smith one either.
- 46:13SPEAKER_02: Like, oh yeah, Sam Smith as well, yeah.
- 46:14SPEAKER_02: I didn't like that.
- 46:14SPEAKER_02: I think it was Quantum of Solace.
- 46:16SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, they um they they're always kind of forgettable and just like stars of the day.
- 46:21SPEAKER_02: But then it's like Madonna is like it's Madonna, that's an amazing like person to get.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: I've had like I remember this one so clearly, yeah, yeah.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: And then like some of yeah, now I'm thinking back to Daniel Craig ones and like, oh yeah, I forgot that.
- 46:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I forgot Sam Smith had one.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: I forgot, and then they're like, these are like Oscar-winning uh songs as well, which is weird.
- 46:38SPEAKER_01: And then like Madonna's one was slated and like one, I think it won a Razzie for like worst song or something.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: That is mental to me.
- 46:46SPEAKER_02: It's like it's it's so it's so fun, and it like it fits the um opening titles really, really well.
- 46:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, those opening titles are great.
- 46:53SPEAKER_02: That's so I mean it's it's probably the only opening titles of the Bond film where Bond is just getting the shit kicked out the whole time.
- 46:58SPEAKER_02: It's really like getting tortured for 14 months.
- 47:02SPEAKER_02: All those scorpions when scorpions aren't really like a motif throughout the film, they're just like the opening sequence of being scorpions, the weird CGI like hot and cold thing, which I guess is a thematic thing throughout the film.
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: Well I was gonna say the one thing I find really funny was like, did you see so in the opening titles?
- 47:17SPEAKER_01: Um the the text that's overlaid, it's so shit.
- 47:21SPEAKER_01: It's so so shit.
- 47:22SPEAKER_02: For the um for the the opening credit text.
- 47:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the opening credit, like the opening credit text is so shit.
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: I love it's like it's like Times New Roman.
- 47:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, in like a red font.
- 47:32SPEAKER_01: Do you remember?
- 47:33SPEAKER_02: I feel like they were using that um effect quite a lot where like you know when there was like a bead of uh like water dropping down and there would you see like a flash of the one of the things you were about to see in the movies in that?
- 47:43SPEAKER_02: I feel like that was such an overused motif at the time.
- 47:46SPEAKER_02: Like, and then that mixed with like yeah, the the drag and drop text and it's like yeah, it literally looks like they've made it in iMovie.
- 47:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like this is what they Which was probably the um the the the the top end editing software at the time.
- 47:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 47:59SPEAKER_02: It was um I I went to a talk at the Prince Charles Cinema a little while ago now.
- 48:04SPEAKER_02: I can't remember, I think it was for License to Kill.
- 48:06SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 48:06SPEAKER_02: Um but the guy who was given the talk there before the the film started was um they basically had like different teams who did the opening sequences that weren't associated with the rest of the movie because they were they're like kind of little pieces of art in themselves.
- 48:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 48:18SPEAKER_02: And um it was really amazing how they did the early ones as well.
- 48:22SPEAKER_02: It was all just like totally experimental and they were just like using these like um cool techniques to to make them look as like weird and psychedelic as possible.
- 48:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 48:30SPEAKER_02: So I love that like um tradition in Bond movies as well.
- 48:33SPEAKER_02: I thought like that was a really satisfying one in um in Die Another Day.
- 48:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I would actually agree.
- 48:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like I really enjoyed the opening sequence.
- 48:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's really I think it's really fun.
- 48:41SPEAKER_02: With with the with the the theme tune as well, it's like I'm about to watch a movie.
- 48:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I love the way it cuts into it and just like it goes straight in.
- 48:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, such an unexpected moment as well, where he's just like sort of like moging underwater, just like trying to look as handsome as he can whilst being like waterboarded.
- 48:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then it just like cuts to the title of like, oh shit.
- 48:58SPEAKER_02: Didn't think that was where they were gonna make the cut.
- 49:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:00SPEAKER_01: And then like yeah, but then so do you want to explain the premise the the basic plot of this of this one?
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: Are you able to explain the basic basic premise of this?
- 49:10SPEAKER_02: So it starts out in North Korea, yeah, and um Bond is uh undercover and he's trying to he's trying to undercover in North Korea.
- 49:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:22SPEAKER_02: Also at this point, like the most one of the most famous men on the planet.
- 49:26SPEAKER_02: Um and he's uh trying to uncover like an African um diamond smuggling operation, and so like uh these African uh like war diamonds are being uh traded for North Korean weapons, and so he comes with these diamonds, so he's uh he's rigged it with an explosive.
- 49:44SPEAKER_02: It's got this like tray of diamonds that's like a tray of like Christmas chocolates where it's like you take you take one tray off and there's another tray underneath, and that's just where he hides the bomb.
- 49:55SPEAKER_01: It's like a very bomb that says C4.
- 49:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, just yeah, everything's labelled in the movie, isn't it?
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: It's like every time he presses a button, it's like it just says C4, it loads it's like that big, yeah.
- 50:07SPEAKER_02: Um so he puts it in there, he like rigs the diamonds and everything, and then um the uh the villain who's called um Colonel Moon, I think.
- 50:16SPEAKER_01: Um let me find it.
- 50:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're probably yeah, Colonel Moon.
- 50:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so you you're introduced to like the two main villains of the of the thing.
- 50:23SPEAKER_02: There's Colonel Moon, and then there's uh Zhao, who I think is one of the best Bond villains ever.
- 50:28SPEAKER_02: He's he's so iconic looking.
- 50:30SPEAKER_02: There's this big like showdown, they find out who he is, um Bond blows up the diamonds, and all the diamonds go into Zhao's face, and that's like the you know, Bond uh villain disability that they get to give them a the three hours of makeup, apparently.
- 50:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, really three hours.
- 50:49SPEAKER_02: I mean it looked great.
- 50:50SPEAKER_02: I thought that guy looked like incredible as well.
- 50:52SPEAKER_02: He was like he was really well cast.
- 50:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um he's really good.
- 50:55SPEAKER_02: And uh so supposedly Bond kills Moon, or does he?
- 51:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um Zhao uh is captured and Bond is captured.
- 51:06SPEAKER_02: Bond is then tortured for 14 months.
- 51:09SPEAKER_02: This is this is the thing.
- 51:12SPEAKER_01: This is the thing that feels least the least Bond out of all of it, because like he grows the long hair and the beard.
- 51:18SPEAKER_02: And he looks so good, yeah.
- 51:20SPEAKER_01: But like it does not suit Bond.
- 51:21SPEAKER_02: No, it doesn't fear at all.
- 51:23SPEAKER_02: There was that whole thing of like George Um Lazenby, that was how he looked in real life, and they made him like tidy himself up to look like Bond, and then um they told him not to come to the um uh like debut screening of uh On Her Majesty's Secret Service because he looked like John Lennon essentially, and he turned up anyway, and people were like, it doesn't look like Bond, that's not very like classy of him.
- 51:46SPEAKER_02: And then that's how they made Piers Brosnan look, which I I I did wonder if that was like one of the nods in the 20-year anniversaries, or is if that's me like overner about it.
- 51:54SPEAKER_02: Like he looks like Torge Raison people with that long hair and beard.
- 51:57SPEAKER_02: Um but he's been tortured for 14 months, he hasn't lost any muscle mass whatsoever.
- 52:02SPEAKER_02: He looks better than he did when he went in.
- 52:05SPEAKER_02: He looks so handsome, he looks like Jason Momoa when he comes in.
- 52:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he does.
- 52:08SPEAKER_02: He looks great, he looks so good, just like completely like rugged.
- 52:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:12SPEAKER_02: Um, and then they ended up so he gets released and he's traded by the US government for for Zhao.
- 52:17SPEAKER_02: So Zhao is now loose in the world.
- 52:18SPEAKER_02: Bond comes back, um, M is uh is is pissed off about it because Zhao is now loose into the world again.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: And um Do you think she also thinks he's like uh giving information away?
- 52:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so yeah, there's the there's a there's a mole in in um in in MI6 that they haven't found at this point.
- 52:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:37SPEAKER_02: Um and then Bond escapes uh M's capture by he he kisses his way out as he as he often does.
- 52:45SPEAKER_02: He he like he makes his heart stop, doesn't he to escape, which is uh never really explained.
- 52:52SPEAKER_02: No.
- 52:52SPEAKER_02: It's like this really weird sequence, which the movie is full of as well, is like this weird, again, very of the time, slow motion but not smooth slow motion.
- 53:02SPEAKER_02: It's like drop frame rates, like jumpy slow-mo, and going really fast to really slow.
- 53:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 53:08SPEAKER_02: Um to make a kind of like dreamy, weird.
- 53:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they love they they do it, they they do it a lot in this movie, and it's like, yeah, like you said, it's of the time.
- 53:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 53:16SPEAKER_02: When the when the um the colonel's father gets killed at the end and he it's like goes super quick and then super slow.
- 53:22SPEAKER_02: It's like weird, like jarring.
- 53:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 53:24SPEAKER_02: It's so funny.
- 53:25SPEAKER_01: It's so funny, yeah.
- 53:25SPEAKER_01: I I don't know why they did that so much back then.
- 53:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it it like seems like just one of the tools they had at their disposal.
- 53:32SPEAKER_02: Like it never looked good.
- 53:34SPEAKER_02: Did high frame rates not exist?
- 53:36SPEAKER_02: Like I don't know when like 60 frames per second was invented.
- 53:40SPEAKER_02: It definitely would have existed.
- 53:40SPEAKER_02: It should have existed, surely.
- 53:42SPEAKER_02: Like it's just no one used it.
- 53:44SPEAKER_02: They were just like, no, we'll just have drop frame rates in this like blockbuster$20 million movie.
- 53:49SPEAKER_02: Like 20 million.
- 53:51SPEAKER_02: Or 200 million, rather.
- 53:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was gonna say it's like although it didn't.
- 53:54SPEAKER_02: This movie cost 142 million.
- 53:55SPEAKER_02: It definitely felt that felt like they did this on the cheap.
- 53:58SPEAKER_01: Cost 142 and it grossed 431.
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: Did alright then.
- 54:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:02SPEAKER_02: Did alright, people still liked it.
- 54:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:04SPEAKER_02: People came, people came and saw it with their Orange Wednesdays, two for one tickets.
- 54:07SPEAKER_02: Orange Wednesday.
- 54:11SPEAKER_02: God, what a day.
- 54:12SPEAKER_02: Using orange orange Wednesdays to go and see Die another day at the cinema.
- 54:15SPEAKER_02: I feel like I would have done that.
- 54:16SPEAKER_02: Well that would have been the best day of my life.
- 54:20SPEAKER_02: I forgot I every so often I remember orange.
- 54:22SPEAKER_02: I'm like, oh yeah, that existed.
- 54:24SPEAKER_02: I miss orange so much.
- 54:25SPEAKER_02: I felt like the the the the the good guy of the phone now.
- 54:30SPEAKER_02: I definitely had orange.
- 54:32SPEAKER_02: I went orange to O2, I remember.
- 54:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean nothing nothing as good as Orange Wednesday has ever replaced it.
- 54:39SPEAKER_01: No.
- 54:40SPEAKER_02: Like I don't need car insurance, I'm 11.
- 54:44SPEAKER_02: Replacing it with like compare the mere cat or compare the market.
- 54:47SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 54:48SPEAKER_02: God.
- 54:49SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, so so the the the the movie the movie goes on there's this like mysterious uh billionaire called Gustav Graves.
- 54:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:57SPEAKER_02: This like British billionaire who who appears uh in the UK and he's he's come seemingly out of nowhere, and the the lie that he's telling is that he uh made a big discovery in like a Swiss um diamond mined, and that's that made him like instantly, instantly rich.
- 55:14SPEAKER_02: It transpires that that Gustav is the the North Korean colonel that died at the start of the movie.
- 55:21SPEAKER_02: It's insane.
- 55:22SPEAKER_02: Absolutely insane.
- 55:23SPEAKER_02: He's not only had plastic surgery to look like the mo it just looked like David Cameron, especially.
- 55:29SPEAKER_02: But he they never explain why he talks like that as well.
- 55:32SPEAKER_02: No, he's so partial.
- 55:33SPEAKER_02: He talks he talks in Korean like once to be like, oh, I am the Korean guy.
- 55:37SPEAKER_02: He's like, father, I'm back.
- 55:40SPEAKER_02: And the recognition.
- 55:43SPEAKER_02: He's like, but not my son.
- 55:46SPEAKER_02: You're like some sort of weirder Tonian boy, like some sort of conservative.
- 55:51SPEAKER_01: He talks like this the whole time.
- 55:52SPEAKER_02: Like it's like his mouth is like the most like rich British man mouth I've ever seen in my life.
- 55:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it's like it's played by this guy called Toby Stevens, who I find it really interesting because he's like he wasn't known before this.
- 56:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, or after it.
- 56:05SPEAKER_01: Or after it, yeah, or after it.
- 56:07SPEAKER_01: But like I find it really weird that he's like the lead villain in a huge Bond movie.
- 56:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 56:13SPEAKER_01: And like now they would like cast some like very, very big star.
- 56:18SPEAKER_02: I wonder if it damaged his career, maybe in it.
- 56:22SPEAKER_02: I don't know, was it unpopular enough?
- 56:23SPEAKER_02: I feel like there was a lot of people who appeared in that movie that like kind of didn't really appear again.
- 56:28SPEAKER_02: Like the guy who played Zow wasn't up to much after this either.
- 56:32SPEAKER_01: Uh that's true.
- 56:33SPEAKER_01: And he would he'd just come off of Basting the Furious.
- 56:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 56:35SPEAKER_02: He was doing like big things and then kind of stopped.
- 56:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh god, he really didn't do anything after this.
- 56:40SPEAKER_02: And he was great in it as well.
- 56:42SPEAKER_02: He was so good.
- 56:42SPEAKER_02: He was such a like iconic villain.
- 56:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:44SPEAKER_02: But I mean, I like Gustave Graves as a villain as well because he's so unlikable.
- 56:49SPEAKER_02: Like you want him to do it constantly.
- 56:51SPEAKER_02: He's like he's a horrible horror.
- 56:54SPEAKER_02: Um he's a very, very good villain.
- 56:57SPEAKER_01: You really like it.
- 56:58SPEAKER_02: I just can't suspend even when I was a boy, I couldn't suspend my d disbelief enough to be like that's the same North Korean general at the start.
- 57:08SPEAKER_02: They really don't explain it.
- 57:10SPEAKER_02: They didn't.
- 57:11SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's so funny.
- 57:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, the the whole thing, and this is like this is something that people had a problem with the movie was like that it was too unbelievable about the face change thing.
- 57:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 57:17SPEAKER_02: But they did that in like so many Bond films before.
- 57:19SPEAKER_02: That's like a classic like Bond motif as the um plastic surgery thing.
- 57:23SPEAKER_02: It happened loads in um initially that was gonna be how they described the change from Sean Connery to George Lazenby was because he's a spy and he was like too uh too many people knew what Sean Connery or that that version of James Bond looked like, like his Blofeld and his enemies and everything.
- 57:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that he was gonna have plastic surgery and come back.
- 57:40SPEAKER_02: So every time they replaced Bond, it would be like quite it's like the the Doctor Who regeneration, except they just have like plastic surgery instead.
- 57:48SPEAKER_02: That'd be really funny if they kept that going to you to this day.
- 57:51SPEAKER_02: But they did that in like um like Blofeld, like had plastic surgery loads, and like there was um uh in Diamonds of Forever, there's like 10 Blofelds, yeah.
- 58:00SPEAKER_02: Um because he gets his henchmen to have plastic surgery to look exactly like him, to so you don't know which one's the real guy.
- 58:07SPEAKER_02: So they did it loads as a motif.
- 58:08SPEAKER_02: So it it wasn't anything new in the It's not anything new, it's just it's just insane.
- 58:12SPEAKER_02: It's just that it they went so far with it in that it was just a North Korean man becoming a white man the most white British man you've ever seen in your life, who's like this fencing guy, and they kind of the only way that they bothered to explain it is that he studied at Harvard for a little bit, and that was how we doesn't explain it.
- 58:28SPEAKER_02: The way they try and explain it at the start of the movie is like um Bond is talking about the UN and he goes, Oh, I know all about the UN.
- 58:35SPEAKER_02: I studied at Harvard.
- 58:37SPEAKER_02: That's what you wouldn't have heard of the UN if you hadn't gone to Harvard, and that explains why he talks with a posh uh Atonian accent at the end of the film as he went to to Harvard for a little bit, which is in America.
- 58:52SPEAKER_02: Wow, they really didn't try it, they really did not try.
- 58:54SPEAKER_02: And it's fantastic, but he's such a like he's almost like a cyber thriller, like spy kid style villain.
- 59:01SPEAKER_02: Because they give him like this electric suit at the end as well.
- 59:04SPEAKER_02: So he's got like electric hands.
- 59:05SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's great.
- 59:06SPEAKER_02: Uh oh, it's so good.
- 59:07SPEAKER_02: Um that final sequence on the plane is one of my favourite on the moment.
- 59:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's like terrible, but so fun.
- 59:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a very good movie for like I think with Bond films, you want a satisfying villain death.
- 59:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and all of them are so satisfying in the it's such a good, yeah.
- 59:20SPEAKER_01: This is a very satisfying one.
- 59:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, pulling the parachute and having really.
- 59:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, getting sucked into the thing.
- 59:25SPEAKER_02: Also a nod to like Goldfinger as well.
- 59:28SPEAKER_02: Like it's um of him getting sucked out of the plane, and then uh Zhao getting crushed by the like diamond chandelier.
- 59:35SPEAKER_01: That's so good, and then you see like the the the pool of floods.
- 59:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's amazing.
- 59:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 59:39SPEAKER_02: Um I guess Rosamond Pike just sort of gets stabbed, doesn't she?
- 59:42SPEAKER_02: But that's that's kind of it.
- 59:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:44SPEAKER_01: Also her first film.
- 59:47SPEAKER_01: Was it her first film?
- 59:48SPEAKER_01: So she she got cast in this like days before.
- 59:52SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 59:52SPEAKER_01: No, yeah, she got cast in this like days before.
- 59:55SPEAKER_01: And then she um so what it said was that she got cast days before she had to leave at like one point to go and go and do her graduation at Oxford.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_02: I think she must have been really young then.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_02: She's very young.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I guess she she kind of looks like she's in her twenties.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's in her early twenties.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_01: Um how old she would have been.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_01: So she's 79, so yeah, like 23, 22.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_02: So she turns out to be the mole as well.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_02: Which is very obvious.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_02: Like we all know it, but when I was re-watching it, I was like, it's also obvious that Gustav Graves is the guy from the start.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_02: They they like pepper it so much before you because the whole theme of it is plastic surgery and changing your appearance.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_02: It keeps saying things like, Have we met before, Mr.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_02: Bond?
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_02: And there's no one else in the movie that could possibly I didn't even think about that.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_02: I think as a child watching it, I obviously thought it was the biggest twist ever, but I think if I was re-watching it as an adult now, I'd be like, I guess that guy's the the the North Korean colonel from the start.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_01: Um Michael Madsen is weirdly in it.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_01: But is he is he in another one?
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_02: I feel like he might have been he wasn't in any of the Daniel Craig ones, but I think he was maybe like the American, like Because what's weird about it is he like appears, but like he doesn't do anything in it.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_02: No, he's just I think they always had like an American counterpart that was like fine now.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_02: It was all it was like that sort of anti-American sentiment where the Americans would be like s I d ironically super cautious about invading anywhere, and then the Brits would go in and solve everything.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_02: And it would end with them being like, You Brits are alright after all.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's not in a single other one.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_01: That makes it wow.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_02: He has like two lines.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_02: Otherwise there's only one.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_01: That's crazy.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, kind of a waste of um of talent.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's really weird.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_01: Uh because John Cleese is in He's in a few of them.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_02: I think he's in maybe all of the Brosnan.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_02: Oh maybe.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_02: Oh no, no, he wasn't in Goldeneye, was he?
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_02: I don't think so.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_02: I don't think he was in Goldeneye.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_02: Um But yeah, he's Q.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, replacing he's replacing Q I believe.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_02: I think he may be I think the original Q was just the same Q for like the whole thing, wasn't he?
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_02: Uh no, he can't have been.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_02: He was really old in the 1960s.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think it's a good idea.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_01: Judy Denge was M from like Goldeneye to She crossed over.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_02: There wasn't a lot of them like crossed over into like different eras, but yeah.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's interesting that some of them did, but some yeah.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, John Cleese's Q, is it's like he's the gadget guy, and like and then it's just weird like going from him to Ben Wishorn.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, that was the proper like rebooty, I think.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_02: They were like, Yeah, they don't go young bond, but they go young Q for some reason.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_01: Um But then Judy Dench stayed.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_01: But they they gave her a great send-off, I thought.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_02: Well then they replaced her midway through as well, so she kind of like crossed over, but actually didn't go to the end of the Dynamic era.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_02: So they just they they stabbed her.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I mean that that was another problem that people had with this movie, was the was the gadgets.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's what I mean.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_01: Like the gadget thing is like that is the one thing I have the issue with because it's just like so stupid.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_02: But as a child, when I was watching that for the first time, I was like, that's what I want.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_02: And that was like it's also like we can't pretend that that hadn't been like peppercorn trout the whole Bond series.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_02: I just think they went too the last like 40 years.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I just think they went like too full on with it.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_02: The invisible car when they try and explain it.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_02: But I I loved that invisible car at the time.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_02: Like they they utilized it well in terms of like the the final battle, I think.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_02: And uh yeah, oh actually, you know what?
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the final battle, yeah.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_01: Anything up to that.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_01: I think it's so stupid when like he's sitting there in the in the invisible car and that you just come to my flying.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_02: And then Zal was like, I guess there must be an invisible car now, so I'll I'll chase it.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_02: It's I mean his car is great as well.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_02: Like Zal's car is a lot of fun.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_02: Like it was like an action man uh car, like like a little like the guns come flying up to the There was there was two kind of guns that were like used in action movies loads back then that you'd never see anymore.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_02: So they're thinking this watching it last night.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_02: Uzies.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_02: You don't see Uzies anymore.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_02: There's always like a villain with an Uzi.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_02: And um mini guns.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_02: Miniguns.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_02: And the minigun coming out of the car.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_02: Like the miniguns were so big at the time.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_01: I wonder why they stopped doing that.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_02: Years of war, you had the minigun video games as well, like time splitters, you had the minigun.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was always so fun.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, generally, and now it's just like just just bog standard machine guns and pistols, isn't it?
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_02: There's no fun guns anymore.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_02: Bring back the Uzi.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_02: It was it would always be like it would define who was like top of the chain as well.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_02: Like the second in command would have an Uzi.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_02: You never have the big boss in an Uzi.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_02: It would mean that they were like slightly lower down the chain.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because the big boss would have like a small gun.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_02: What did you think of the henchmen in Dynamite of the Day?
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_02: It's like they they cram it quite full of them, but none of them have any decisions.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say, like, none of them do.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_02: I don't remember the henchman really.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_02: He gets dropped off at that like Swiss um supervillain lair.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_02: And he the second he gets out of the car, there's a guy there, and all he says is, My name is Mr.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_02: Kill.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_02: Mong goes, Well, that's a name to die for.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_02: And that's kind of the only line this henchman has in it.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_02: And it's just like, oh, you get who this guy is, he's gonna have a funny death.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_02: And he does, he gets lasered through the mouth.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_02: But they it's just like that's just yeah, I they they're very throwaway.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they very throwaway them.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_02: Well, we call him Mr.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_02: Kill, I guess.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_02: And then the other guy who's just this was something they had quite a lot in the Piers Brosnan era, was like a nerdy little science guy who was like in charge of all the gadgets.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_02: Um, who wasn't as good as like Alan Cummings was an amazing one in Goldeneye, and he had like such a cool death with like the the freezing, he had a catchphrase as well, saying I'm invincible.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_02: Um, this guy was just like a kind of knockoff, Alan Cummings gets sucked out of the plane.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_02: The only discerning feature is he has a bit of a bad haircut, and that's kind of it.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he doesn't really do a whole lot.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_02: He's just kind of there the whole thing.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_02: They kind of drop the ball on it.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_02: That's my one complaint about this film.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_02: Otherwise, I'd run it to the death.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_02: But I still I still uh I still rate those villains.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_02: What do you think of money penny in this?
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_02: Oh, this was something I was watching last night, so they've got these.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_02: Like they've got these glasses.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's why it's like it's very weird.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_02: It's it's Q's like new training gadget, is they've got these like uh basically like meta glasses where um bonders can train uh like situations, um combat combat situations, and then there's a scene that they tack on to the end of the movie where Money Penny is using the glasses.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_02: You don't know she's using the glasses yet, it's just a scene with Money Penny, and she's just like having sex with James Bond, and then is the interrupted by Q and she's lying on the floor and she's got all her hair tousled, whips the glasses off, and she's like, oh, it was just just testing that they were working.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_02: And it's like so that so Q has programmed this so that people can have sex on it.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_02: And also it was James Bond makes the move in this scenario, so it's like how how has she programmed it to do this?
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_02: Very, very weird.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_02: These are your sex classes, Bob.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_02: You'll you'll need these to practice text on the on the field because you'll be having a lot of sex.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_02: You do have a lot of sex, don't you?
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_02: You're often distracted by it, or solving missions with it.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_02: There's an early Sean Connery um film, I can't remember which one it is.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_02: Um the only reason he goes on the mission in the first place, he's been like fired by MI6.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_02: And the only reason he goes on is because um he's shown a picture of a random woman and he wants to have sex with her, and so he goes.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_02: And that's the only he doesn't care about the mission at all.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_02: There's no stakes in it, it's just he's shown a picture of a random woman who he doesn't know in like Cuba.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_02: It's like mmm.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_01: As far as not George Lasenberg.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Jimmy.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_00: Um sex tourist.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_01: The the other thing is like speaking of like people who are like ra oddly involved in this that you wouldn't expect.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_01: So like Toby Stevens as Gustave Graves, the director, Lee Tamahori.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_01: Very weird choice.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_01: Very, very weird choice.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_02: He was like the sixth choice as well.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_02: Like they were they were trying to get Tarantino for a bit, which would have been madness.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_02: Um they wanted to maybe that's why Michael Madsen's in it.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's true, yeah.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, maybe they got like halfway through with that process or something.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_02: Um Tony Scott as well, I think, was in the Tony Scott would have been a great one.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_02: If it kind of already felt a bit Tony Scott-esque, I think.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_01: He really hadn't directed much though.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_02: Didn't Tony Scott do Spikers or something crazy like that as well?
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_02: Like he did he did a similar like naughty's.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_02: Tony Scott did a lot of stuff.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_02: Movie.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_01: Uh similar naughty's movie.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_02: Did you say spikers?
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_02: I thought yeah, there was like a really surprising one that he he did.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_01: Spike it's he did by game.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_02: I don't even know what that is, but I'll I'll pretend that was what was talking about.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_01: Battlefire, Domino, deja vu.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_01: Domino was crazy, that film.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_01: Taking a pellet in one, two, three, and then unstoppable.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_02: Domino was one of the worst castings I think I've ever seen.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_02: Like I can't take Kira Knightley as a hard-handed like assassin.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_01: Uh this guy Lee Tamahori only died like almost a year ago.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_01: I didn't realise he died.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he died like almost a year ago.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_01: Um he didn't direct much.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_01: He like he he'd come off of like Malholland Falls, The Edge, one episode of Sopranos, Along Came a Spider, and then this.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_02: And then I guess this probably destroyed his career.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_01: Well then he went on to direct Trophilex State of the Union.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_01: Oh nice.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_02: The classic uh next stage of the Bond jumping off.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_01: Triple X is like kind of the American Bond.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh definitely.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_02: A hundred percent.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_01: And Triplex Trophilex State of the Union is awful.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_02: I I think Dion of the Day definitely had a sort of like American action movie feel to it.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_02: It does, yeah.
- 1:09:53SPEAKER_02: Like very much.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_02: The formula of it and uh the grandeur of it.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_01: Triple X State of the Union is the um is the ice cube one.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_02: Did you see the ice cube, but no, was it Ice Cube that did the like that pandemic war of the worlds?
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_01: I haven't seen it.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_02: I need to watch it because I'm so it's so good.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just look, I've seen a couple I've seen clips of it.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_02: He did the whole thing on Zoom.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_02: I think his son dies in the middle of it, and he's like and that's the degree of the price in these shows that I see.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_02: It's it's incredible.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_02: And they they like reuse, like even though it's all made on Zoom, they like reuse the same clips over and over again.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's great.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_01: Is it like is it genuinely like as bad as everyone's making it out to be?
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_02: I think it is uh probably hands down actually the worst movie of all time.
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_02: I don't think you can even classify it as well.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_02: I need to watch it.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_02: It's like it is um unbelievable that it it's not made.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_02: I think I don't know if it like it was like you know during the pandemic and it was like, oh, this is how films are getting made.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_02: Now it's just like War of the Worlds, except it's a zoom call.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_01: It's because the cost is not even small, it's like Evil Ongoria as well.
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_02: I guess like War of the Worlds is one to try, like initially it was it was like a radio show, wasn't it?
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_02: Or like it was like kind of seen as real.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_02: So maybe it's something that you can possibly pull off with minimal budget, but not in this kind of way.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_01: This director is like a music video director as well.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_01: That's why that's yeah, that's that's all he's that's the only other things he's done is music videos.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_02: So many MM videos.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_01: He's like MM's director from like the 2010s up.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, so good.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_01: That's so far.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_02: It's I mean, I don't think it had like a cinematic release or anything, did it?
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_02: No, no, definitely did not.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_02: And it also came out like five years after pandemic.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_02: I don't think I I think it would have been pretty heavy on the refunds if um if it had come out in the cinema.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_01: It says first mentioned in 2020, uh it resurfaced in July 2025 when it was released straight to streaming as a free movie on Amazon Prime.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_02: I I watched quite a good chunk of it, and it's it's kind of not like just watching the highlights is enough, really.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_02: There's like people have made violet realms.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_02: It's not like the room where it's so bad it's good.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_02: It's it's actually it's it's a drag for the highest god.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, filmed during the summer and fall of 2020 under COVID-19 protocols.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_02: Well duh.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_02: I think that's probably one of the only things where it was very obviously under COVID-19 protocols.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_02: That's so funny.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_02: But it may as well have been wearing a mask, yeah.
- 1:12:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 1:12:42SPEAKER_01: Uh like God.
- 1:12:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, back to Bond.
- 1:12:44SPEAKER_01: So this is also like one of the interesting things about this as well, is like the two writers of this were the ones that went on to write all the Daniel Craig ones.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's right.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_02: And uh that but they feel so different to Yeah, like I don't know how they like nailed Casino Royale so much as well.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_02: Like they they just really, really got the mood of the time.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_02: I think they they may have.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_02: Did they proceed?
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_02: Did they do the last few like Roger Moore ones as well, potentially?
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_02: I think they I think those two main writers were like really, really long-term writers.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_02: Maybe Goldeneye was the first one.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_01: This guy's born in 1961, there's no way he was writing.
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_01: That's so funny.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_01: Okay, so his this guy's credits are The World Is Not Enough, to Die Another Day.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_01: Well, he got The World Is Not Enough is his first credit.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_02: Oh, we started on World Is Not as a first writing credit of anything.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_02: That's not too shabby.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_01: To die another day to Johnny English.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_02: To Casino Royale.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_02: Or is this or is this a different guy?
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_01: No, this is the same guy.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_01: Same Casino Royale.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_01: So we did Johnny English and he did Casino Royale.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_01: Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre, no time to die.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_01: That's incredible.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_02: Maybe I'll read you a watch of uh Johnny English.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_02: I can't remember if that was any good or not.
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_02: It's not.
- 1:13:49SPEAKER_02: It's not, it's not, it's not it wasn't it wasn't like Austin Powers like good.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_02: No, it's not like Austin Power.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_02: It's not it's not fun.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_02: Trying to make something like that, like a Bond parody and it not being fun is just I find it really boring.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I th I don't I I think I watched it at the time and I don't remember it sticking to it.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_01: It just yeah, it just misses I feel like just misses everything that's fun about Bond.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_02: I guess it's like it kind of already been done with Austin Powers as well.
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_01: So it's quite a uh territory to step on like yeah.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_01: It's very different to Austin Powers, but like it's it it's obviously like Ron Atkinson, but like really hamming it up.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_02: It's more just like straight, like uh Bond in a tuxedo kind of.
- 1:14:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're just like how ridiculous is this?
- 1:14:35SPEAKER_02: Like essentially like Yeah.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_02: I'm taking an unconventional route into this.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_02: When he goes through a sewer or something, doesn't it cover that kind of thing?
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, I remember all that.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, so this yeah, this movie made like a lot of money.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_01: Obviously, but like I'm so surprised.
- 1:14:51SPEAKER_01: I can't believe because it's been when was the last Bond film?
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_01: When didn't it come out?
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_01: No Time to Die?
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_02: Uh I remember it was really delayed because of COVID.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_01: So it's been longer between So it's now been longer between No Time to Die and the next Bond film than it has between uh Die Another Day and Cena Royale, which is crazy.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_02: This is the longest gap there's ever been, I think, before a new bond in the history of it.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_02: I thought there was a big gap in the 80s.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_02: There to Goldeneye.
- 1:15:17SPEAKER_02: To there was a gap, I think it was shorter than this.
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_02: I'm pretty sure this is the longest ever.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_02: I might be you can um you can correct me on that if I'm wrong, but I was trying to see.
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_01: So 95 was Goldeneye, license to kill was 89.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_01: Is that the last one?
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_02: License to kill was the last Dalton, yeah, before uh Goldeneye.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_01: Okay, so there was a six year so it's it's coming up to the same amount of time.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, so it has been shorter.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_01: So I guess it will be.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_01: I think by the time the next book comes out, it will be the longest game.
- 1:15:49SPEAKER_02: That's probably what I was thinking.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:15:51SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, I wonder, uh I mean they're claiming they haven't even come close to picking uh who it's gonna be next.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_02: Who do you think it will be?
- 1:15:57SPEAKER_02: I hope they go for an unknown again.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_02: I think that's the that's crucial.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_02: Like all this talk about it being um.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_01: But when you say that, do you mean like Daniel Craig is an unknown because?
- 1:16:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean he'd done like layer cake and stuff, but it needs to be like Layer Cake got him the film, didn't it?
- 1:16:09SPEAKER_02: You can't have someone who's like had a a big break already, I think.
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_02: Like it needs to be someone who you can like mold, like believe as Bond.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_02: Can't be someone too old.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_02: I d I really don't want it to be like Henry Cavill or anything like that.
- 1:16:20SPEAKER_02: Like it's I think like terrible.
- 1:16:21SPEAKER_01: No, I don't want it to be um Aaron Taylor Johnson either, who they were like really pushing for.
- 1:16:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think of that of the like bookies' favourites, Aaron Taylor Johnson might have been the most interesting, but he's he's been in like Marvel movies now and stuff, so he's probably too big.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_02: He's too yeah, he's too big.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I hope it's someone I've never heard of before.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_01: The odds at the moment is saying Cal Callum Turner.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_02: That's mental as well.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I think again, I think he's too big.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_01: Tom Francis, I don't know Tom Francis.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_02: Don't know who that is.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_01: And then Aaron Taylor Johnson, Harris Dickinson, Lewis, Partridge.
- 1:16:56SPEAKER_03: Don't know them.
- 1:16:58SPEAKER_01: Harris Dickinson is like sort of like around the Alam Turner level.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, is he young as well?
- 1:17:05SPEAKER_02: I feel like that's what they're gonna I it feels like they're gonna go like proper reboot.
- 1:17:08SPEAKER_02: Because they had that game come out just now, didn't they?
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_02: Where it's like pretty young bond, which yeah, so uh has has gone down really well, so they might have been using that as a bit of a like a litmus test as like whether people want to see like a because uh Daniel Craig was like a rebooted yeah, like it was him getting like his first kill and his license to kill and everything.
- 1:17:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but it it wasn't like a young bond.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_02: No, no, it wasn't like bond bond kids.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_02: Bond was like in high school like rugrats all grown up in reverse.
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_01: One of the famous favourite series, Dams and Idris, which would be very interesting.
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_01: I don't know what that would be like.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think people would lose their minds.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_02: They should do like bond babies, like Muppet babies.
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_01: Oh god, like imagine like all the all the uh misogynistic stuff.
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_02: Little baby goldfinger.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_02: Baby goldfinger?
- 1:18:03SPEAKER_02: No, Mr.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_02: Bond, I expect you to cry.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_02: That's great.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna make it if it hasn't been made.
- 1:18:12SPEAKER_02: If they're not if Amazon aren't doing it, I'm gonna make it bond babies.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_01: Um Jacob Ballordi would is the one they're pushing as well, and I hate that.
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_02: No, a terrible, terrible choice.
- 1:18:25SPEAKER_01: He's so tall as well.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_02: The public will never accept a tall bond.
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_02: Do you remember when the but when people didn't want a blonde bond?
- 1:18:32SPEAKER_02: Like with with Darren Craig, it was like it was the uproar at the time was like he's crazy.
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_02: So good luck pushing a black bond if they're not going to accept a blonde.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_01: I think, yeah, I I really think they should have got in early on on Idris and got him there.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_01: I think he would have been good.
- 1:18:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and he was also like at a point in his career where he was like not too big at the top of the city.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_01: When they should have got they should have got him back then.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_02: But now he's like in his fifties now, isn't he?
- 1:19:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh like he's like yeah, he's like barely younger than Daniel Craig's.
- 1:19:07SPEAKER_02: I think that that ship has sailed, unfortunately.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_02: That ship has definitely sailed, and like yeah, like but he would have been great.
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_02: Um speaking of uh writers as well, did you know that Roald Dahl wrote um one of the screenplays?
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_02: No Bond.
- 1:19:19SPEAKER_02: He wrote um uh You Only Live Twice.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_02: And which was panned at the time as well for being too big and too silly, but and then all of these like tropes actually became like but he was like kind of the he was the one that sort of introduced the the supervillain layers and like the the all the henchmen again, like the kind of Austin Powers uh parody fodder and everything.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_02: But um in in uh You Only Live Twice, it's the one where Blofeld has the big uh lair inside of Volcano, yeah.
- 1:19:45SPEAKER_02: Which is now like a really classic kind of kind of I think they directly parody that in Austin Powers there.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_02: Not a layer inside of Volcano, but yeah.
- 1:19:52SPEAKER_02: Um when you're watching it, you can see all like where they where they drew influence from uh from that.
- 1:19:57SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, but there was a roll doll one.
- 1:20:00SPEAKER_02: I'm really not so surprising.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and he wrote a weird choice.
- 1:20:04SPEAKER_02: He wrote that and like chitty chitty bang bang in the same thing.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_02: I knew he knew together, like yeah, which really feels like him.
- 1:20:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, definitely.
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you can definitely see that.
- 1:20:11SPEAKER_02: So like a lot of silliness.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_02: I I think also like because uh the the early Sean Connery ones felt like Alfred Hitchcock, classic cinema, yeah, stranger on a train kind of vibes, and then um that one comes along and starts feeling like how we know Bond films to be now.
- 1:20:25SPEAKER_02: So Rold Dahl was kind of responsible for a lot of that.
- 1:20:27SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 1:20:28SPEAKER_02: And people hated it.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_02: And but now they love it.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, now they love it.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_02: Now it's like it's an essential for every Bond movie to have like a big lair and a big villain and a sidekick and all this kind of stuff.
- 1:20:37SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 1:20:37SPEAKER_01: And so yeah, saying that is like it's how people want Bond to go back to this now as well.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_01: People want that.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_02: It it is also one of the most racist and misogynistic and uncomfortable watches, I would say.
- 1:20:47SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 1:20:48SPEAKER_02: Probably down to Dell's actual views.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_02: It's the the villains are Chinese in this one, and you you can you can imagine the direction that he goes with some of the dialogue choices.
- 1:20:59SPEAKER_02: Um something we've lost, I think, is henchmen hanging out the side of a car that we're in, like all of the early ones.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_02: You would always have like those old style cars and there'd be people with guns like hanging out the side.
- 1:21:11unknown: Oh yeah.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_02: I want to see that in a in a new one.
- 1:21:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, that'd be back.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_02: In an invisible car.
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's like 20 of them coming out the windows.
- 1:21:23SPEAKER_01: Um, so let's let's uh because we're running low on time, right?
- 1:21:27SPEAKER_01: Let's let's move on to the the final bits, which is um I want to play a game which I've told you about, but for anyone who doesn't know, this is a game that I've been doing, which is Movie 501, which is like a darts style thing where I give you a category and your job is to get to name movies and to get the and to get to zero uh with the Rotten Tomato scores as quick as possible.
- 1:21:47SPEAKER_01: So you're gonna name say the Godfather and it has 99% or something like that, and I take that off of 501, and you're you're trying to get to zero.
- 1:21:56SPEAKER_01: Cool.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_01: Um so I'm gonna give you for this, I'm gonna give you action movies, because I think that's like on like on brand, yeah.
- 1:22:04SPEAKER_02: On brand what we've been talking about.
- 1:22:05SPEAKER_01: Uh so if you want to go with action movies.
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_02: Um like a high-rated action movie.
- 1:22:10SPEAKER_01: It can be what if we're any era, yeah.
- 1:22:13SPEAKER_03: Um I g like the first mission impossible must be rated quite high.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_03: Mission Impossible.
- 1:22:23SPEAKER_01: It's funny you went with the first one because I feel like that the later ones are the ones that are rated higher.
- 1:22:28SPEAKER_02: Impossible I I to be fair, I never saw any of like the the really recent ones.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_02: They're very good.
- 1:22:33SPEAKER_02: I do need to see them.
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_02: Is it is it like surprisingly low?
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_01: It's 66.
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_02: Oh fuck.
- 1:22:39SPEAKER_02: Shows what I know.
- 1:22:41SPEAKER_01: You're at uh 435.
- 1:22:42SPEAKER_02: Okay, the the the Born Supremacy.
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_01: Born Supremacy is 81.
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_01: Good score.
- 1:22:51SPEAKER_01: You're at 354.
- 1:22:52SPEAKER_02: Would you count Children of Men as an action film?
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_02: Or is that more like a sci-fi?
- 1:22:55SPEAKER_02: Children of men, I I feel like also one of the best films of all time, in my opinion.
- 1:22:59SPEAKER_02: It's it's absolutely incredible.
- 1:23:00SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 1:23:00SPEAKER_02: 92.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_02: Nice, yeah.
- 1:23:02SPEAKER_01: Is you at 262?
- 1:23:04SPEAKER_02: 262.
- 1:23:05SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:23:06SPEAKER_02: Need to get a couple more 90s in there.
- 1:23:08SPEAKER_01: Uh it's hard with action films.
- 1:23:10SPEAKER_01: I don't really know.
- 1:23:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's action movies, it's like I don't know.
- 1:23:12SPEAKER_02: There's so many that I love, and then they're always rated like 50% or something.
- 1:23:16SPEAKER_01: Um but that should help you later down the line, at least.
- 1:23:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_02: I feel like Rush Hour can't possibly be rated high, but like it's it was such a big movie at the time.
- 1:23:25SPEAKER_02: Is it seen as like a no, that's not gonna be like rated in the 90s?
- 1:23:28SPEAKER_02: No, it's not.
- 1:23:29SPEAKER_02: I don't think anything Chris Tucker ever touched was uh was in the 90s.
- 1:23:32SPEAKER_01: Um Rush Hour 2 has been on this, I'll just give you that as a cloak.
- 1:23:36SPEAKER_02: Can I can I say uh a Bond movie?
- 1:23:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, of course.
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_02: Casino Royale.
- 1:23:43SPEAKER_02: Even though we've established that wasn't the top-ranked one I've got the number three.
- 1:23:49SPEAKER_02: I'm not playing this game well.
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_01: Uh 94.
- 1:23:52SPEAKER_02: 94.
- 1:23:52SPEAKER_01: What are we down to?
- 1:23:53SPEAKER_01: 168.
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_02: 168, okay.
- 1:23:56SPEAKER_02: Um big popular action movies.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_01: Um the score to beat is seven, by the way.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_02: Seven is the lowest you've ever got.
- 1:24:04SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:24:06SPEAKER_02: Um maybe it's so maybe chucking in some lower ones is is is good.
- 1:24:10SPEAKER_02: Get a kind of number.
- 1:24:13SPEAKER_02: Hang on.
- 1:24:14SPEAKER_02: Not that I'm I'm pretending I can do math in my head, I absolutely can't.
- 1:24:17SPEAKER_01: Uh you're on uh one you you need uh 168.
- 1:24:21SPEAKER_02: 168, okay.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_02: Let's go for God blanking on like every action, every resistance.
- 1:24:30SPEAKER_02: The Terminator?
- 1:24:32SPEAKER_02: Again, would you call that a sci-fi in action movie?
- 1:24:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's definitely an action movie.
- 1:24:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:36SPEAKER_02: No, the Terminator 2.
- 1:24:37SPEAKER_02: Terminator 2.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_02: I think that was that was probably more popular.
- 1:24:40SPEAKER_01: Definitely higher.
- 1:24:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:24:41SPEAKER_01: That is 90.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_02: Nice, okay.
- 1:24:45SPEAKER_01: 78 you've got to get now.
- 1:24:46SPEAKER_02: 78.
- 1:24:47SPEAKER_01: This is where it starts to get high.
- 1:24:49SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay, so I've got to get like a like an average feeling one.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_02: 78 or 178, did you say?
- 1:24:54SPEAKER_02: 78.
- 1:24:55SPEAKER_02: 78, cool.
- 1:24:57SPEAKER_01: Which is look good.
- 1:24:58SPEAKER_01: You can still that's I can still go low with that.
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_01: You could, but you could also get a 78, actually.
- 1:25:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_02: So 78 on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_02: I feel like that's not a number you see very often on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 1:25:10SPEAKER_02: It's like it's either kind of bang low or kind of into the 80s.
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_02: 78 I would say something like I was gonna say the minority report.
- 1:25:22SPEAKER_02: I feel like that's actually more that's gonna be higher, isn't it?
- 1:25:24SPEAKER_02: That was that was seen as a bit of a classic.
- 1:25:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know actually.
- 1:25:27SPEAKER_02: I feel like that could be the 90s of minority report.
- 1:25:30SPEAKER_02: Is that not like seen as a banger?
- 1:25:33SPEAKER_03: Um let's go with something like it came up before.
- 1:25:42SPEAKER_03: Let's let's go domino.
- 1:25:45SPEAKER_03: I feel like it's gonna be lower, but like my number report was 89 by the way.
- 1:25:49SPEAKER_03: 89, okay, so we would have we would have crashed out.
- 1:25:55SPEAKER_03: Is it really low?
- 1:25:56SPEAKER_01: It should be really low.
- 1:25:57SPEAKER_01: It's eighteen.
- 1:25:58SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I've got another one in me.
- 1:26:00SPEAKER_01: So now you've got sixty.
- 1:26:01SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's easy to get it.
- 1:26:02SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 1:26:02SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 1:26:03SPEAKER_03: Okay, rush hour, then rush hour one.
- 1:26:07SPEAKER_01: Sixty-two.
- 1:26:09SPEAKER_01: Too high, but I can go I can keep going to it.
- 1:26:11SPEAKER_02: Okay, I'm not um I haven't um No, no.
- 1:26:14SPEAKER_01: I give people a few of them to consider it's hard.
- 1:26:17SPEAKER_03: Okay, rush hour three has got to be lower than that.
- 1:26:19SPEAKER_03: Oh, it's definitely lower.
- 1:26:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_03: How much lower are we talking?
- 1:26:25SPEAKER_01: 17.
- 1:26:27SPEAKER_01: I didn't know things went this low on rush hour.
- 1:26:30SPEAKER_01: Uh on um the Rotten Tomatoes.
- 1:26:31SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, it goes down to like it goes to zero.
- 1:26:33SPEAKER_01: I've had zero ones on here.
- 1:26:35SPEAKER_01: Um you got 43.
- 1:26:37SPEAKER_02: 43.
- 1:26:38SPEAKER_02: Okay, let's let's think of a stinker.
- 1:26:41SPEAKER_01: That's not a stinker, that's like a average.
- 1:26:43SPEAKER_02: Average.
- 1:26:44SPEAKER_02: Wild, wild west with Will Smith.
- 1:26:47SPEAKER_02: You're going stinkers.
- 1:26:49SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna chip away at this.
- 1:26:52SPEAKER_02: 16?
- 1:26:53SPEAKER_02: 16, oh my god.
- 1:26:55SPEAKER_02: That was another one I loved growing up as well.
- 1:26:57SPEAKER_02: Kenneth Branner and a big rebellion.
- 1:27:00SPEAKER_02: He's also been on this as well.
- 1:27:01SPEAKER_02: I'm reading as as a someone who defended that.
- 1:27:04SPEAKER_01: Rush Hour 2, um, Brennan Lee Mulligan.
- 1:27:06SPEAKER_01: Oh nice, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:27:07SPEAKER_01: Uh you gotta get uh now you need uh 27.
- 1:27:13SPEAKER_01: That's hard.
- 1:27:14SPEAKER_02: 27.
- 1:27:15SPEAKER_02: Let's go for Shanghai Noon.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 1:27:19SPEAKER_03: I think that might be around that.
- 1:27:26SPEAKER_03: What the fuck?
- 1:27:27SPEAKER_03: 80%.
- 1:27:28SPEAKER_03: 80% for Shanghai Noon.
- 1:27:30SPEAKER_03: Wait, no, have I have I named the wrong movie?
- 1:27:31SPEAKER_02: Is that the Owen Wilson one?
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_02: Maybe Shanghai Night?
- 1:27:34SPEAKER_03: Shanghai Nights, yeah, try that.
- 1:27:38SPEAKER_03: Could they make two or three of those?
- 1:27:40SPEAKER_03: Two, I think.
- 1:27:41SPEAKER_03: Two.
- 1:27:41SPEAKER_03: I can't remember which is which.
- 1:27:44SPEAKER_01: 66?
- 1:27:44SPEAKER_01: What?
- 1:27:45SPEAKER_01: What on earth?
- 1:27:45SPEAKER_01: I need to rewatch these movies.
- 1:27:47SPEAKER_02: Are they?
- 1:27:47SPEAKER_02: I remember them being awful.
- 1:27:48SPEAKER_02: I yeah.
- 1:27:49SPEAKER_02: I mean I I think I liked them growing up, but I think I was even aware at the time that these were like B movies.
- 1:27:55SPEAKER_02: Um Let's go for um keeping on the Jackie Chan.
- 1:28:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's that's the way to go.
- 1:28:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because I don't think he ever had any particularly highly rated ones.
- 1:28:08SPEAKER_02: Who am I?
- 1:28:10SPEAKER_01: I think that's quite high.
- 1:28:11SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 1:28:12SPEAKER_01: That's quite a good one, isn't it?
- 1:28:14SPEAKER_02: It's an enjoyable one, it's 70.
- 1:28:16SPEAKER_01: 70, really?
- 1:28:17SPEAKER_01: Think.
- 1:28:17SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I'll I'll give you a better clue for the I don't actually I don't know where this is gonna be.
- 1:28:22SPEAKER_01: Well more to now, I can't remember what we're up to what we're trying to get.
- 1:28:25SPEAKER_01: 27.
- 1:28:25SPEAKER_01: 27, okay.
- 1:28:26SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say like think this might be too low, but I'm gonna say think like early 2000s Jackie Chan movies.
- 1:28:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:28:33SPEAKER_01: There's there's one that I'm thinking of.
- 1:28:36SPEAKER_01: Like American ones, I'm thinking there's an American one I'm thinking of.
- 1:28:39SPEAKER_01: Oh really?
- 1:28:39SPEAKER_02: I can't even think of any in early naughty ones that aren't rush hour.
- 1:28:43SPEAKER_01: Um There's one really high concept one.
- 1:28:46SPEAKER_01: It's so stupid.
- 1:28:48SPEAKER_02: With him is he in a duo or is it just him on his own?
- 1:28:50SPEAKER_01: It's him on his own with Well, it's him on his own technically, but he's like he's got like a a woman with like a famous woman with him.
- 1:28:59SPEAKER_01: But it's not like they're not a duo.
- 1:29:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:29:01SPEAKER_02: I don't know what that would be.
- 1:29:02SPEAKER_02: I I don't think I the only ones I remember seeing were like the Owen Wilson ones and the Chris Tucker ones back then.
- 1:29:08SPEAKER_02: And then going into his like 90s ones, sort of before he could speak English.
- 1:29:12SPEAKER_02: I was gonna check it anyway.
- 1:29:13SPEAKER_01: Uh well, yeah, that would have put you like that would have made it too hard, but uh the tuxedo is what I was thinking of.
- 1:29:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's I I remember the tuxedo, actually.
- 1:29:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I do remember that.
- 1:29:21SPEAKER_01: That was 22, so that would have put you like 5%.
- 1:29:23SPEAKER_01: You would have to do that.
- 1:29:23SPEAKER_02: I would have never thought about that movie again in my life had you not shown me that.
- 1:29:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't think people are thinking about that one.
- 1:29:29SPEAKER_02: Is it is that the one where he's wearing the tuxedo and it's like doing all the stuff for it?
- 1:29:32SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, that's so good.
- 1:29:33SPEAKER_02: It's like the like the mask.
- 1:29:35SPEAKER_02: Um okay, so we need a we need a real stinker that's like 20, 27%.
- 1:29:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, just like a not great act.
- 1:29:42SPEAKER_02: I feel like there's got to be most action movies.
- 1:29:44SPEAKER_02: You said rush hour three.
- 1:29:46SPEAKER_02: Rush hour three.
- 1:29:47SPEAKER_02: Did we not already do that?
- 1:29:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you did rush hour three.
- 1:29:49SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to think if you did two or three.
- 1:29:50SPEAKER_02: I think two was seen as the good one, and one was seen as good-ish as well, I think, at the time.
- 1:29:55SPEAKER_02: But two was like the the big one.
- 1:29:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:29:58SPEAKER_03: Um let's go for battleship starring Rihanna.
- 1:30:05SPEAKER_01: That is a good shout.
- 1:30:07SPEAKER_01: That's gotta be low.
- 1:30:09SPEAKER_01: So close.
- 1:30:10SPEAKER_02: So close.
- 1:30:10SPEAKER_02: 33.
- 1:30:11SPEAKER_02: 33, no way.
- 1:30:12SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's so close.
- 1:30:13SPEAKER_02: That's like one too many reviewers gave it three stars.
- 1:30:18SPEAKER_02: Uh what was that one?
- 1:30:21SPEAKER_02: Uh what was that one where the day after tomorrow, if you remember that one.
- 1:30:26SPEAKER_02: It was like a climate disaster one.
- 1:30:31SPEAKER_01: That's gonna be slightly.
- 1:30:32SPEAKER_02: That might that might be high, actually.
- 1:30:34SPEAKER_02: I think it was actually quite a bit.
- 1:30:35SPEAKER_02: 43.
- 1:30:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:30:36SPEAKER_02: Uh all right, one more.
- 1:30:37SPEAKER_02: Okay, one more, and then I and then I lose.
- 1:30:41SPEAKER_01: Um for like most people haven't complete been able to complete this.
- 1:30:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean that's that's but like you've done eight, you've given eight, which is still good.
- 1:30:49SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 1:30:50SPEAKER_01: Eight with a twenty-seven left, which is decent.
- 1:30:52SPEAKER_02: It's because I kept thinking I was giving 90s and they were all coming up as 22, so it's my my taste in movies.
- 1:30:59SPEAKER_02: Uh let's think.
- 1:31:01SPEAKER_02: What sucks?
- 1:31:01SPEAKER_02: There must be like a a low-rated Marvel movie.
- 1:31:05SPEAKER_03: Morbius?
- 1:31:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that'll be like that's gonna be I'm I'm gonna guess that's like 10.
- 1:31:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, which means I can go again.
- 1:31:17SPEAKER_02: Fifteen.
- 1:31:18SPEAKER_02: Fifteen, okay, so we're down to 13.
- 1:31:20SPEAKER_03: 12 or 12.
- 1:31:22SPEAKER_03: Um, absolutely everybody hate.
- 1:31:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, was Morbius the lowest rated Marvel movie, I feel like it was it was it was down there, wasn't it?
- 1:31:49SPEAKER_02: Like there was a few unpopular ones, but I don't think there'll be any lower.
- 1:31:52SPEAKER_02: I think Craven, I think, was at lowest.
- 1:31:54SPEAKER_02: I don't think it was that low.
- 1:31:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:31:57SPEAKER_02: 12%.
- 1:31:59SPEAKER_02: Oh, tell you what, let's go for Ice Cube's War of the Worlds.
- 1:32:03SPEAKER_02: That might be a zero.
- 1:32:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:32:07SPEAKER_02: It's a four.
- 1:32:08SPEAKER_02: Four, okay.
- 1:32:09SPEAKER_02: Eight's pretty good.
- 1:32:10SPEAKER_02: So your lowest ever score was seven.
- 1:32:13SPEAKER_01: Oh no, I'm saying they did it in seven.
- 1:32:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, they did it in seven goes.
- 1:32:16SPEAKER_01: Oh, I see, I see.
- 1:32:16SPEAKER_01: Oh, they're well, they got to zero.
- 1:32:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:32:18SPEAKER_01: Oh wow, so it's possible.
- 1:32:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it is possible.
- 1:32:20SPEAKER_01: Oh, damn, okay.
- 1:32:20SPEAKER_01: Someone's done it in nine, someone's done it in seven.
- 1:32:22SPEAKER_02: Oh, how many have I done?
- 1:32:23SPEAKER_02: 30.
- 1:32:27SPEAKER_02: 10, okay.
- 1:32:28SPEAKER_01: And you've got an eight left.
- 1:32:29SPEAKER_02: Eight left.
- 1:32:30SPEAKER_02: Oh god, eight.
- 1:32:32SPEAKER_02: Um that's gotta be another one of those like ice cube level like stinkers.
- 1:32:37SPEAKER_01: Maybe like a Schwarzenegger or Yeah, what was it like a bad Schwarzenegger?
- 1:32:42SPEAKER_01: Um even like a Steven Sigal.
- 1:32:47SPEAKER_03: I don't know if I can name any Steven Signs.
- 1:32:49SPEAKER_03: No, he's one of those guys like um No, it's gonna be too high.
- 1:32:58SPEAKER_03: I wonder if there's like a really obscure I was gonna say exit windows, 35%.
- 1:33:03SPEAKER_01: Oh, fair enough.
- 1:33:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's gotta be one of those ones that like made the news it was so bad, I think.
- 1:33:09SPEAKER_02: Like whenever there's like a little like less than 10% of Ron Tomatoes, it kind of like gets about, doesn't it?
- 1:33:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah I would say it's a tough game.
- 1:33:28SPEAKER_03: It's a very tough game, it's a very tough game.
- 1:33:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:33:34SPEAKER_03: I'm just looking at more like this or what what about Titanic 2?
- 1:33:40SPEAKER_03: Insane.
- 1:33:48SPEAKER_03: No score.
- 1:33:49SPEAKER_03: No score.
- 1:33:51SPEAKER_02: It's had two reviews.
- 1:33:52SPEAKER_02: It's had two reviews.
- 1:33:53SPEAKER_02: What are the reviews?
- 1:33:54SPEAKER_02: Can we make up our own average?
- 1:33:56SPEAKER_01: Uh fun for a mindless Saturday afternoon, and then it comes very close to being not an entirely bad movie.
- 1:34:02SPEAKER_01: It's so bad.
- 1:34:04SPEAKER_01: Why has it had two reviews?
- 1:34:05SPEAKER_02: It's like a student film.
- 1:34:08SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, Lorna Rostrine was talking about it once on this.
- 1:34:12SPEAKER_01: Defending it.
- 1:34:12SPEAKER_01: No, she was saying how bad it was.
- 1:34:14SPEAKER_02: It is crazy bad.
- 1:34:14SPEAKER_02: I don't know, I don't know.
- 1:34:15SPEAKER_02: Like the I mean it's obviously like not related to Titanic One, but I don't know how they got to even call it that.
- 1:34:21SPEAKER_02: She was just talking about how bad it was.
- 1:34:25SPEAKER_02: Um I feel like maybe No, we're talking action movies, not horror movies.
- 1:34:30SPEAKER_02: Um is it an action horror?
- 1:34:32SPEAKER_02: Like what were you thinking?
- 1:34:34SPEAKER_02: What are you thinking?
- 1:34:34SPEAKER_02: I feel like there was like a sort of era of like quite low-rated um like sequels to the big um the big horror movies like uh um I still know what you did last summer and stuff like that.
- 1:34:48SPEAKER_02: Was that a thing?
- 1:34:49SPEAKER_02: Did I just make that up?
- 1:34:49SPEAKER_02: Is there another thing there was a second one right now?
- 1:34:52SPEAKER_01: If it's as bad as that.
- 1:34:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:34:55SPEAKER_03: That would be ten.
- 1:34:58SPEAKER_03: Was it ten?
- 1:34:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:35:00SPEAKER_03: Pretty close.
- 1:35:01SPEAKER_03: Jeep as creepers two?
- 1:35:04SPEAKER_02: We're going into horror.
- 1:35:04SPEAKER_02: I'm kind of cheating now though.
- 1:35:06SPEAKER_03: This is this is the wrong the wrong category.
- 1:35:10SPEAKER_01: Twenty-five.
- 1:35:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's not even listed as an action.
- 1:35:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I can't I I was gonna say maybe the Vince Vaughan remake of um uh Psycho, but that's again that's that's that I can't classify that as an action film.
- 1:35:29SPEAKER_03: What is it getting rated?
- 1:35:36SPEAKER_03: That's a 40.
- 1:35:37SPEAKER_03: Wow, I didn't think that was that high.
- 1:35:39SPEAKER_01: I thought it was like considered terrible.
- 1:35:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:35:41SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:35:42SPEAKER_02: Anyway, um might have to call it there.
- 1:35:44SPEAKER_02: No, that's fine.
- 1:35:45SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm I'm pretty happy with my seven to be honest.
- 1:35:46SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah.
- 1:35:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's decent.
- 1:35:48SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 1:35:48SPEAKER_01: Uh it's a good score.
- 1:35:50SPEAKER_01: Uh okay.
- 1:35:51SPEAKER_01: Well done.
- 1:35:51SPEAKER_01: Thank you very much.
- 1:35:52SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:35:53SPEAKER_01: Alright, so for the final bit, let's talk about uh a movie that's well um well reviewed and well loved that you actually think is a bad movie.
- 1:36:01SPEAKER_02: There was oh, what would it be?
- 1:36:03SPEAKER_02: I feel like there was something I saw in the last few years that I just didn't get that was like really, really hyped.
- 1:36:08SPEAKER_02: Um it was a it was like a blockbuster.
- 1:36:15SPEAKER_02: I'm so bad at thinking the I just thought I should have thought of this ahead of time.
- 1:36:18SPEAKER_02: No, sorry, I did spring it on you right before we started recording.
- 1:36:21SPEAKER_02: And then I was like, oh I'm gonna think of it and then I forgot to think um about what it was.
- 1:36:24SPEAKER_03: Um I was distracting you from I feel like there's some Oscar winners that um I'm gonna I'm gonna cheat and look at my phone or something for like Oscar winners.
- 1:36:40SPEAKER_03: I thought the shape of water sucked.
- 1:36:43SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 1:36:43SPEAKER_01: That's funny because like uh that was also brought up recently by um Demi A Didjuivo.
- 1:36:48SPEAKER_01: As a bad film or as a bad film.
- 1:36:50SPEAKER_01: He was like, it's a lot of.
- 1:36:51SPEAKER_01: It sucks.
- 1:36:52SPEAKER_02: It's we're spiritually connected to me and Demi.
- 1:36:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:36:54SPEAKER_01: And that's like the first time they've come up on here.
- 1:36:56SPEAKER_02: Interesting, yeah, yeah.
- 1:36:57SPEAKER_02: I thought because that that was I remember at the time it it's like swept the Oscars, isn't it?
- 1:37:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is what we were talking about.
- 1:37:03SPEAKER_01: It's like it's crazy because it's like we I we went and looked, and it's um it beat Get Out.
- 1:37:10SPEAKER_01: That is madness.
- 1:37:11SPEAKER_01: Call Me by Your Name.
- 1:37:12SPEAKER_02: Also madness.
- 1:37:13SPEAKER_02: Um I've got I'll find out two great films, love both of those movies.
- 1:37:17SPEAKER_01: I've got to find uh it's actually crazy.
- 1:37:22SPEAKER_01: It's it beat like five or six that you're like, how did it beat these movies?
- 1:37:27SPEAKER_03: Uh 90th Academy Award.
- 1:37:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so it beat Call Me by Your Name, Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Get Out, Lady Ladybird, Phantom Thread, The Post, and Three Billboards.
- 1:37:41SPEAKER_02: I think I would have put every single one of those films on that list.
- 1:37:44SPEAKER_02: I've seen most of those as well.
- 1:37:46SPEAKER_02: I'd put all of those above the shape of water.
- 1:37:48SPEAKER_02: Phantom Thread was, in my opinion, Paul Thomas Anderson's best film.
- 1:37:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:37:52SPEAKER_02: Lady Bird was incredible, Get Out was incredible, Dunkirk was great.
- 1:37:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:37:55SPEAKER_02: Three billboards was obviously incredible as well.
- 1:37:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, I hate this is the thing with the book.
- 1:38:00SPEAKER_01: Me and Demi hate three billboards.
- 1:38:01SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
- 1:38:01SPEAKER_01: I loved it.
- 1:38:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I really loved it.
- 1:38:04SPEAKER_02: The rest of them, you're like, yeah, they're great.
- 1:38:05SPEAKER_02: It was just boring.
- 1:38:06SPEAKER_02: It was like the the monster looked cool, and that was kind of it.
- 1:38:09SPEAKER_02: Like it was just a weird it's just a woman shang and a fish.
- 1:38:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:38:15SPEAKER_01: And I our our theory around why it won the Oscar is that there were too many others there, and they all cancelled each other out, essentially.
- 1:38:23SPEAKER_01: Like people were voting for too many and it just snuck.
- 1:38:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I guess so.
- 1:38:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's a that's a really long list of like like short lists, isn't it?
- 1:38:31SPEAKER_02: They're usually that long.
- 1:38:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's the ten, yeah.
- 1:38:33SPEAKER_01: It's like, well now they've upped it to ten.
- 1:38:35SPEAKER_02: Oh, I see.
- 1:38:36SPEAKER_03: Um looking at some of these other ones.
- 1:38:41SPEAKER_03: Um I mean a lot of like Oh, I tell actually I tell you what what uh I think this is what I was probably thinking of was Dune.
- 1:38:57SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 1:38:58SPEAKER_02: Um and controversially I thought the David Lynch Dune was incredible.
- 1:39:03SPEAKER_02: I I love the original Dune, it's so weird and 80s and sci-fi and everything.
- 1:39:08SPEAKER_02: And like I I I had seen that and gone in thinking it was kind of gonna be well, not I didn't think it was gonna be like that, because obviously it was panned at the time and everything, but like um I just preferred David Lynch's one, it was just more fun, I think.
- 1:39:20SPEAKER_02: And there was it was weirder, and like I don't I just found like the Timothy Chalamet one too A-lister stuffed, which is my problem with what's the what's the director called again?
- 1:39:29SPEAKER_01: He did it Um Benevalu.
- 1:39:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:39:32SPEAKER_02: And it well, and he's doing the new Bond, so that's that uh brings things uh oh wow full circle, which which made me worry that maybe he's gonna pick a bunch of A-listers to be in it because that's kind of what he does, isn't it?
- 1:39:42SPEAKER_02: Like not always.
- 1:39:44SPEAKER_02: Zendaya's a bond girl or whatever, and like Yeah, I feel like people kind of expecting that.
- 1:39:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Timothy Chalamet is Bond.
- 1:39:50SPEAKER_01: Oh, that would be a terrible choice.
- 1:39:53SPEAKER_02: That little medieval shoe that people say looks like Timothy Chalamet, but it's got knife coming out at the end.
- 1:40:00SPEAKER_02: Except it's like curled, so it comes back towards him till it just stabs him in the in his in his shin.
- 1:40:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know what you mean.
- 1:40:05SPEAKER_01: I didn't really like I don't care about them.
- 1:40:08SPEAKER_01: I just don't care.
- 1:40:09SPEAKER_02: All of anything that's like rebooty with A-listers, I just can't really get on board with because it's when it's a sci-fi like that, you can't like lose yourself in it.
- 1:40:17SPEAKER_02: Um so I think the casting is important for that kind of stuff.
- 1:40:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:40:19SPEAKER_02: So June for me, it was too like A-lister-packed, it was too slow.
- 1:40:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:40:24SPEAKER_02: Um it was it was it was in it was very interesting to look at.
- 1:40:28SPEAKER_02: I don't think there's like anything that Oh, visually it's great.
- 1:40:31SPEAKER_02: Visually it's cool.
- 1:40:31SPEAKER_01: Like I think it's just kind of boring.
- 1:40:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:40:34SPEAKER_02: And I think like the the versions of the characters and the initial version, like I thought Karma Clacklin was a lot like more enjoyable to watch on screen.
- 1:40:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:40:41SPEAKER_02: And um that the guy who played what's the villain called in that again?
- 1:40:44SPEAKER_02: The the guy who like sits in the goo.
- 1:40:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, I can't remember.
- 1:40:47SPEAKER_02: Um I know what you mean, but yeah.
- 1:40:48SPEAKER_02: They got such a like amazing, like weirdo to to play um in the David Lynch version.
- 1:40:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the David Lynch version so insane.
- 1:40:55SPEAKER_02: It's so good, it's it's great.
- 1:40:56SPEAKER_02: And then like the the guns with the like where they have to like scream to use them and stuff.
- 1:41:01SPEAKER_02: It's uh it's great.
- 1:41:02SPEAKER_02: And you used a bunch of like Twin Peaks actors in that as well.
- 1:41:04SPEAKER_02: So you've got all these like it's a really cool sort of like uh if you if you were into like Twin Peaks and that, then um you can see all these people.
- 1:41:12SPEAKER_02: I think that's why I enjoy work.
- 1:41:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:41:14SPEAKER_01: That's why I enjoy more about it.
- 1:41:15SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, yeah, so I think June would be my my choice for that.
- 1:41:18SPEAKER_02: June slash shape of water.
- 1:41:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's totally I completely agree.
- 1:41:22SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:41:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:41:23SPEAKER_02: Excellent.
- 1:41:23SPEAKER_02: I I thought I was gonna come on here with really controversial opinions, but no, no, everything you've said I actually agree with.
- 1:41:28SPEAKER_01: Usually people pick yeah, people pick tend to pick film where I'm like, wow, I can't believe you.
- 1:41:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, dying of the day, I'm surprised by that list.
- 1:41:36SPEAKER_02: I thought that was like I thought it was dead gonna be dead last.
- 1:41:39SPEAKER_02: I thought everyone agreed it was like dead bottom.
- 1:41:41SPEAKER_02: But like No, it's like it's it's near the bottom, it's not at the bottom.
- 1:41:44SPEAKER_02: I would say it's a top for me personally, in terms of my personal enjoyment, it's a top five bomb for me.
- 1:41:49SPEAKER_02: Um but maybe even top three, uh, because I it's it's so fun.
- 1:41:52SPEAKER_02: Um I definitely in terms of like objectively, I'd say it's a top ten.
- 1:41:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:41:56SPEAKER_01: I definitely enjoyed it a lot more than I remembered enjoying it.
- 1:41:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and like but obviously I hadn't seen it in years, so like completely different perspective going into it now.
- 1:42:03SPEAKER_02: It's just a fun action movie.
- 1:42:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it is.
- 1:42:05SPEAKER_01: It's very silly, it's like it's formulating, like yeah, yeah.
- 1:42:08SPEAKER_01: Halliberry's hot.
- 1:42:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a great way to end the end Piers Brosnan's.
- 1:42:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:42:15SPEAKER_02: His final scene in it as well, the way he ended his whole thing.
- 1:42:18SPEAKER_02: The entendres in it, which are obviously like a running motif in in Bond movies, where the camera's panning over, you can't see what they're up to yet.
- 1:42:26SPEAKER_02: It's like Halliberry and Piers Brosnan in this like little cabin, and they're both saying things that you just wouldn't say during sex, but clearly like insinuated to be there having sex, like, oh just leave it in a little while longer.
- 1:42:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's gonna have to come out at some point.
- 1:42:41SPEAKER_02: As we've all said during sex.
- 1:42:43SPEAKER_02: Like, it's gonna have to come out at some point.
- 1:42:46SPEAKER_02: Come on, I've got things to do today.
- 1:42:48SPEAKER_02: And of course, what they're actually talking about is there's a diamond in Halle Berry's belly button.
- 1:42:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:42:54SPEAKER_02: And she's begging Bond to like oh, keep it in a little while longer.
- 1:43:00SPEAKER_02: It has to come out at some point.
- 1:43:02SPEAKER_01: The worst one, the very worst one in all of the Bomb films is I guess Christmas came first.
- 1:43:07SPEAKER_01: Or Christmas came early.
- 1:43:08SPEAKER_01: Christmas came early.
- 1:43:10SPEAKER_02: Oh, I guess Christmas came early.
- 1:43:12SPEAKER_02: The puns, uh the puns in Die Another Day were pretty good.
- 1:43:15SPEAKER_02: They made sense.
- 1:43:15SPEAKER_02: Like he he saves himself by hanging off a bell, so he says saved by a bell.
- 1:43:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, excellent.
- 1:43:20SPEAKER_02: Um, in some of the early ones, it's it's ridiculous.
- 1:43:23SPEAKER_02: He kills he kills one of the um uh like henchmen as a woman and like sits her down and says to like a group of people, she's like clearly dead, she's just like shot in the back, and she just goes, She's dead, tired.
- 1:43:35SPEAKER_02: And that's the pun.
- 1:43:37SPEAKER_02: God, my god.
- 1:43:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's a lot of bad ones that are like very uh ill fitting.
- 1:43:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, god.
- 1:43:44SPEAKER_01: Well, this has been really fun.
- 1:43:45SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 1:43:46SPEAKER_01: This is lovely.
- 1:43:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, thank you so much for coming on.
- 1:43:47SPEAKER_01: But yeah, my pleasure.
- 1:43:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, how can people find you online and what would you like to promote?
- 1:43:53SPEAKER_02: I am uh at Rory Cargill on everything.
- 1:43:56SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm I'm promoting my show at the moment on TV.
- 1:43:59SPEAKER_02: I'll be uh uh at the fringe from the full length of it, whatever that is, the 5th to the 30th, I think.
- 1:44:03SPEAKER_02: God only knows.
- 1:44:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's the basically the whole of August.
- 1:44:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, and I'll be doing a show that's about like TV history that's like very silly, very spoof-heavy, uh character show, uh very, very fun show with a lot of like tech and cool film elements to it as well.
- 1:44:19SPEAKER_02: So if you're into films, which I presume you are if you're listening to the film.
- 1:44:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'd imagine so, yeah.
- 1:44:22SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 1:44:23SPEAKER_02: Come come along.
- 1:44:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:44:24SPEAKER_01: Um and what room are you in?
- 1:44:27SPEAKER_02: Oh, I'm in uh the crate with assembly at uh 6 55 p.m.
- 1:44:31SPEAKER_02: uh every day with no break.
- 1:44:33SPEAKER_02: Fun.
- 1:44:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:44:34SPEAKER_02: Every day.
- 1:44:35SPEAKER_02: I sleep when I'm dead.
- 1:44:38SPEAKER_02: The next Bond film.
- 1:44:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:44:40SPEAKER_02: I'll wake up specifically for the next Bond film.
- 1:44:44SPEAKER_02: Uh all right, thanks so much for coming on.
- 1:44:46SPEAKER_02: Nice, thank you very much.
