- 1:30episode of Nick Carter. The original air date June the eleventh of nineteen forty
- 1:36six. The title is the Case of the Clumsy Forgeries. What's the matter?
- 1:47What is it a case for Nick Carter? My study texture. Yes,
- 1:57it's the Case of the Clumsy forgeries. Another case for that most famous
- 2:00of all men hunters, the detective whose ability at solving crime is unequaled in
- 2:06the history of detective fiction, Nick Carter, Master Detective Nick. Do we
- 2:22have much more to do on this report? Not much, Patsy? Why
- 2:24well, chapter five and I have an appointment with my hairdresser sick. We
- 2:29will make it all right. I'll see that you do, Bobby. It
- 2:30for me to be rent you from making yourself as beautiful as you can.
- 2:35What a thing to say. I was only joking. Patsy really are a
- 2:38fine looking girl? Oh, Nick, do you mean that? Well,
- 2:42yes, of course I do. Oh that's the first personal compliment you've paid
- 2:46me in all the years I've been working for you. I didn't know you
- 2:50ever noticed me, except as your assistance. I noticed a good many things
- 2:55I don't mention, Patsy. Oh don't I know that? Fine? Now,
- 3:01I bet I don't keep that big with a hairdresser after all. Nick
- 3:07Carter's office Patty Bowen speaking. His nickname is Bowen. This is doctor bred
- 3:10Oh yes, just a minute, doctor doctor Bradford. Oh thanks, oh
- 3:15doc, I've been keeping himself all these months. I haven't seen you in
- 3:17a dog's age. I know it, Nick, that's the old story.
- 3:21Shortage of doctors makes double work for the rest of us, like good ones
- 3:24like you. What's new, Nick, I've just run into a very peculiar
- 3:28thing, and I think you can help me. I'm glad to if I
- 3:30can. Let's have it. I've been treating old Gerald cool for years.
- 3:35He's been in bed with a very bad heart for some time now, due
- 3:37to pop off almost any minute. Well, in this afternoon, when I
- 3:39dropped in for my regular visits at five o'clock, I found him dead.
- 3:45Heart failure and the best of my ability to determine so quickly. Yes,
- 3:50But when I started to straighten out the body so it wasn't as twisted as
- 3:53it was when he died, I found a piece of paper under him and
- 3:55which was scribbled. He killed me, he gave me. That's all.
- 4:00Looks as if he started to write something and died before he could finish it.
- 4:03Could he been having hallucinations? I wouldn't say so, but I'd like
- 4:06your opinion before i'd do anything. Maybe you can find something that I've missed.
- 4:11It'll show whether it was murder or not. You're at the Gold house.
- 4:14Now, Yes, could you take a run over here? Certainly,
- 4:16dog, if you really think it'll help, I'm sure it will. But
- 4:19just in case, suppose you come as my assistant, say, mister Nicholas,
- 4:25how's that? Oh fine, all right, doc, I'll be then
- 4:28ten minutes. You see, Nick, this note was under his shoulder,
- 4:41just as if he'd rolled over on it in his last moments. This pencil
- 4:44was there too. How long had he been dead when you arrived? Only
- 4:46a few minutes at most? Tell me, dog, isn't it perfectly possible
- 4:51to kill the man with a bad heart such a way as to make it
- 4:54look like heart failure is easily in The stimulant that acted on his heart would
- 4:59do it pretty short order. But does he show any signs of such a
- 5:01stimulut No, But that wouldn't prove anything. No, autopsy is the only
- 5:05way to be sure. Yes, of course. Well, let's see if
- 5:09you can find any evidence he hud a point in one direction or the other.
- 5:13If anything was given him, it could have been in this glass is
- 5:15the only one near enough for him to have reached it? Only one person's
- 5:23fingerprints on it, see the old man's thumb. Yes, same, all
- 5:30right. That little scar makes it definite. It's peculiar, to say the
- 5:34least. What do you mean, Nick, Well, if you give a
- 5:36person a drink, do you wipe your own prints off the glass? First?
- 5:40Of course? Not it. Oh, I see what you're getting at.
- 5:43Somebody did give him something deliberately, and to be my guess, you
- 5:46just take this along, have the contents analyzed. I can wrap it in
- 5:50this wax paper. By the way, have you told the family yet and
- 5:55that he's dead? Yes, not that he was killed. I asked him
- 5:58to wait downstairs until I was ready for them. Let's see. There are
- 6:00two sons, if I recall, yes, Raymond is the elder and Peter.
- 6:04What do they like? Well, Raymond is pretty much of a sport,
- 6:08but Peter is a quiet, stay at home type, and both nice
- 6:11fellows as far as I know. Old have a nurse. Yes, would
- 6:15you like to see her? She's in the next room. Yes, please,
- 6:17I'll get it. Uh, yes, Waters, this is mister Carter,
- 6:27Nick Carter. Yes, I regret to tell you that mister Gould did
- 6:32not die naturally. He was murdered. Murdered, but doctor you said he
- 6:36died of heart sadia. He did miss Waters that somebody induced that heart failure.
- 6:42I want to know where were you when mister Gould died? Why in
- 6:46the kitchen? Nice balls? You see every day doctor Bedford comes to see
- 6:49mister Gould around five o'clock, so about four point thirty, I've a down
- 6:54to the kitchen to get his supper ready. He likes to eat right after
- 6:57doctor goals. And I was there till doctor bread Wood called me to tell
- 7:00me mister Gould was Is anyone there with you? Cook? Was Sames?
- 7:04Always? You don't think I did it? Do you? Yeah? Checking
- 7:08up? That's all? Did you give him anything except his regular medicine today?
- 7:12No? You ever used the glass that was here in the corner of
- 7:15this table, Well, that was mister gouldwater glass. Anybody could have used
- 7:19it to give him a drink. He drank lots of water. Mister Gould
- 7:24keeping in valuables here in this room. The only thing I know about is
- 7:27that box of page on the shelf under the table over there. He used
- 7:30to well clear it's open. Did you use the caplock? He never saw
- 7:36it open before unless he was using it. And look at the keys there
- 7:40on the table. They was always kept under his pillar. So look at
- 7:43that. No, no, don't touch it. Maybe prints on it that
- 7:46will need this copper surface shows up the prince excellently. What is it?
- 7:57Nick? This is strands? Only one sat a prince on this too,
- 8:01are they, mister Gould? I don't think so. I can't be sure.
- 8:05I don't see what's inside started papers letter from his lawyer. You notes
- 8:13ah, no will signed and witnessed by Amelia Waters and Delphina Hayes. That's
- 8:20Cook and May one thousand a year to Peter and the rest of Raymond.
- 8:28You must be mistaken, Nick. He'd never leave everything to Raymond. That's
- 8:31what it says here. That's queer, that's very queer. Indeed, does
- 8:35Raymond know about this world? Oh no, sir, he doesn't. Cook
- 8:37and I were told to keep it a secret, and we have. I
- 8:41see both the boys here now, doctor yes, downstairs in the living room.
- 8:45Good, I'll take the dead man's prince and we'll have a talk with
- 8:48the two sons. You know, the law says you have to report a
- 9:03murder as soon as it's discovered. Why ask me a fool question like that.
- 9:05I just wanted to be sure, Maddy. Hey, Well, here's
- 9:11the report. Eryld. Gould has just been found dead in his bed,
- 9:15apparently died of heart failure. But that ain't murdered, Nick, that's good,
- 9:18Well, that's but it is murder, even though the only real proof
- 9:24at the moment is my own hunt. Why didn't you say so, we'll
- 9:26have a man up there right away. Oh, yes, matter, you
- 9:28won't find anything. But I won't find anything. Why not because I've got
- 9:31all the clues with me, So don't bother sending anyone up here. But
- 9:35Nick, if there's a murder right now, not at this time, Maddy,
- 9:37leave everything to me, see you know, at a while, come
- 9:39by and wait, did you say father was? This isn't really my assistance,
- 9:45it's Nick Carter, the private investigator. Nick Carter. My always seems
- 9:48a bit little questions. But but your father died of heart failure induced by
- 9:52someone who wanted him dead now rather than later, and that's murder. Can't
- 9:56believe it, either of you know the terms of your father's will. No,
- 9:58I don't. I've always understood he was planning to leave most of his
- 10:01money to Peter. He didn't exactly approve of me. Where have you two
- 10:05been this afternoon. I've been right here in the living room since after lunch.
- 10:07I came home about three o'clock and I've been in my room ever since.
- 10:11Did either of you go to the sick room this afternoon at any time?
- 10:13I didn't. I didn't leave my room. I haven't been near it.
- 10:16Have there been any visitors? No? If there had been, I'd
- 10:18have seen them come in. It's a Carter. What makes you think father
- 10:22was murdered? He left a note which said so, and also there's additional
- 10:24evidence to support that fact, and the fingerprints and the glassy huge and on
- 10:28the strong box he kept in his room. Could you explain what you mean,
- 10:31mister Carter? Not just now? Then? I suppose that no one
- 10:33came in from outside. All of us here in the house, the cook,
- 10:37the nurse, Raymond and I are all suspects. You are how'd you
- 10:41take your fingerprints? If I mean, why, I'll need them as evidence.
- 10:45Just put your fingers in this ink pad and on this paper I did,
- 10:52all right, Peter, you don't mind, not at all right?
- 10:58All right? Thank you both of you. Now, either of you will
- 11:01leave town until I say so. Well, but how do you go about
- 11:03finding a killer? In a case like this, routine investigation to start with
- 11:07looking to the backgrounds and personal lives of everyone concerned. That brings out the
- 11:11motives and frequently gives us information that will help determine guilt or innocence, together
- 11:16with actual clues present at the scene of the crime. Of course, it
- 11:18sounds pretty complicated to me. Sounds complicated to me too, But there's one
- 11:24thing about Nick Carter. He has your reputation for always uncovering the guilty party.
- 11:28Once he gets on a case, nothing gets away from him. Well,
- 11:31I wish you luck, mister Carter. You better let me wish you
- 11:33luck, because I won't be lucky for whoever killed mister Gould. All right,
- 11:37doctor ready? All right with you? Nick? Gooday boys by doctor
- 11:41Brantmans. Well, Nick, where do you start this investigation of yours?
- 11:48How I think that before I do anything else, I've had to turn these
- 11:52documents I found on the strong box over to mister Lynn rules lawyer. Oh,
- 11:56I can take them down for you. I'm going that way. Oh
- 11:58what are your thanks? Glad to do? That'll let me get to police
- 12:01who had quarters a little sooner? Man, he must be ready to hang
- 12:05me right now. Well it's done their time. You got here, you
- 12:18tell me there's been a murder, and then you tell me to stay away.
- 12:22Well, I sent a couple of men up there anyway, man is
- 12:24I told you on the phone they won't find anything. I thought the only
- 12:26clude with me right here in the bag. I'm saving your time, saved
- 12:30me time. Yeah, give me heart failure? What a pal? All
- 12:35right, here we are. Here's a drinking glass, contents unknown, with
- 12:39only the dead man's prints on it. Habit analysed to see what was in
- 12:43it? William? All right, mister Carter, whatever you say, thank
- 12:46you, Yes, come in here. Oh what else? Nick, here's
- 12:52a copper box with some fingerprints on it. Who kept his will and some
- 12:56other papers in it? And here for comparison, now the prince of the
- 13:00dead man and his two sons. See if the prince in the box can
- 13:03be identified? Yeah, take this glass to the chemist, tell him I
- 13:09want to know what was in it, and have the fingerprint. Boys.
- 13:11Look this box over, and here, Mary is a note found under the
- 13:16dead man's body. Here, let me see that he killed me, he
- 13:22gave me. Well, I suppose he just had time to write this before
- 13:26he passed. Out That's what I thought too, But then when I found
- 13:30this pencil under the bouty and what was it? Sure? How do you
- 13:33mean the note was written with a soft pencil. The pencil I found is
- 13:37a hard one. So the whole thing is a put up job murder.
- 13:41I told you that before. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know you
- 13:43did it. I'm just thinking I can think too, can I? I
- 13:50hope? So why you don't? Okay, okay? Shell? Now look,
- 13:58Nick, would you mind telling me about the murder? Very simple?
- 14:03Maddy Gerald Gould had a very bad heart. Somebody gave him a stimulant,
- 14:07started his heart raising over attack, sitting stopped, he died. So and
- 14:11without the clues you picked up, it would have looked like a natural death,
- 14:15not bad, not bad started. Oh we'll see less contained then's a
- 14:22dream and water. It's an awful, deadly combination, certainly is if the
- 14:26victim had a bad heart, as mister Gould did. How about the prince
- 14:30of the box. The only prints on the box are Raymonds? And that
- 14:33means what Considering that the will, which was in the box leaves practically everything
- 14:37to Raymond, it's interesting to say the least you mean he did it.
- 14:41I do not, but I'm going to start finding out who did it if
- 14:43I can. Where you're starting garded doors of research work on the two good
- 14:48boys. Well, good night, matter, I'll see you soon. Okay,
- 14:50Hey, now look Nick, will you keep in touch with me?
- 14:54Oh? By the way, madam, is Demler Street open again? Yeah?
- 14:56They finished it up yesterday. Why the short cut for me? Way
- 15:00back to the office. Less traffic saves time? Okay, okay, so
- 15:03long I'll be seeing you even less traffic eve than usual. I wonder if
- 15:18Patsy's back yet. Me Just like her to wait for me when there's no
- 15:22need of it. Calling Patsy Bone, private investigator, calling Patsy Bone,
- 15:31Patsy Bone. Are you in trouble? No, indeed, I just want
- 15:35to tell you to go on home. Oh did you get your hair fixed?
- 15:37No, I've been waiting here. I never know when you're going to
- 15:39need me. Oh sorry, Patsy, go on home, go to bed.
- 15:43I'll tell you all about it in the morning. Oka, good night.
- 15:46Pots always gets done on him busy. What are you doing driving through
- 15:54a red light like that? Oh? You're driving through a red light wall,
- 15:56you big Pelukah, No matter your color blind. Look at the radiator
- 16:00of my car and the fender while you smash the whole front in. I
- 16:03don't see nothing. Show me where I hit you. Show you look here,
- 16:07man, say the way that? Huh, Patsy, Hello, Hello
- 16:26yoursel Oh gosh, Nick, Am I glad to hear your talking sense again?
- 16:32Huh talking sense? Yes, you've been lying here in the hospital for
- 16:36almost two days now, muttering and making no sense at all. Did you
- 16:40say two days? Practically? That shock you got when you hit your head
- 16:44against the wind she almost gave you concussion of the brain. What say that
- 16:48again, Betsy, I said that shock you got when you hit your head
- 16:51against the winds. She is that? What do you think happened? Of
- 16:53course one of the prowl cars sounds. You're lying on the wheel of your
- 16:56smashed car with your forehead old cut, bloody Cat's see, it's a plot.
- 17:00I wasn't hurt when the smash up occurred. To me, does your
- 17:04head hurt? Yes, it does, but I'm not out of my mind.
- 17:07After the accident, I got out and started to argue with a mugger
- 17:10ran into me when he suddenly stocked me on the head. When I wasn't
- 17:11looking. Is a car that ran into me? Still there? No,
- 17:15that was a funny thing. The other car was gone. Somebody wanted to
- 17:18get rid of me and apparently thought they had, so they told the other
- 17:21wreck away. But Nick, who would want to kill you? Or?
- 17:23I guess I'd say the same person who killed Jerald Gould was afraid I'd find
- 17:27out too much when I started investigating him. He failed this time, and
- 17:32he won't get the chance again, and I'll find out what he was afraid
- 17:34I'd find out just as soon as I get out of this bed. Well,
- 17:37the doctor said you'd have to stay here at least another three or four
- 17:40days. Nonsense, I'll be out of here tomorrow at the latest. Oh,
- 17:42by the way, have you heard anything more about the gold case?
- 17:45Uh? Sajia Mathison called this morning to ask how you were that he was
- 17:48getting nowhere rapidly. Oh what he said? He heard the gone wheel which
- 17:52be read tomorrow afternoon at the lawyer's office. Oh, I know, I'll
- 17:56be out of here tomorrow. Gotta be present when that will is read.
- 17:59Oh, but Nick, you can, and why do you have to be
- 18:02there? I don't know, Patsy, I just know I've got to be
- 18:04present when mister Lynde reads that will. Not the doctor, doctor or no
- 18:07doctor. I'm going to be at Lynde's office tomorrow afternoon. Now that mister
- 18:21Carter has arrived, I shall perceive the reading of the will. What's the
- 18:25idea of having a detective and a cop here? This is a family affair,
- 18:27Raymond, mister Cutter and Sergeant Mathieson are here at my invitation. And
- 18:33now, if you're ready, in mister Lyn, I shall be brief.
- 18:36This will, drawn up by mister Gould six days ago, directs at his
- 18:40funeral experienses and all other outstanding debts be paid first. He then directs that
- 18:45one thousand dollars a year for life be paid from his estates to his youngest
- 18:48son, Peter. What's that I said? He leaves you one thousand dollars
- 18:52a year for life. That's a dirty chip. He always said, I
- 18:56was to have it all. Please, Peter, this is no time for
- 18:57an augumble. Well, I can't live on that. Who gets the rest
- 19:00of the money to his eldest son, Raymond. Mister Gould leaves the balance
- 19:03of his estate. Father never wrote that will. This is amazing, Father
- 19:07always said, I'll get practically nothing. I'll bet you had a hand in
- 19:10this. Ray Father would never do a thing like that to me, not
- 19:12unless he's been influenced. Peter, How can you think that you don't have
- 19:15much more influence with father than I if I did. Let me see that
- 19:18will. Certainly here it is. See I told you something was wrong.
- 19:23That's not father's signature. Can your father never signed that will? That signature
- 19:29is a forgery? Are you sure, Peter? Of course, I'm sure.
- 19:32Get an expert he'll tell you no. But I look at it closely.
- 19:36He does look wrong. Excuse me a moment. I know Father would
- 19:38never do that. Why did you expect me? I expected, but I
- 19:45wasn't sure what this changes the whole case. Yes, certainly puts a new
- 19:48line on things. I think I begin to see where we're headed. It's
- 19:52a goodness. Take here's lind again. There's no question about it, gentlemen.
- 19:56This will is a fortray I see it now. Ray Ford will forced
- 20:00the will and then kill father to get the money. I did no such
- 20:03things. It was you who killed father. I why should I kill him?
- 20:06I don't get anything out of the will. The boy's right and it
- 20:08was Raymond's fingerprints on the strong box. Raymond Gould, I arrest you.
- 20:12You don't why he gonna help catch him? Made no, no matter,
- 20:18You'll get him. He's got the whole police force at his command. I'm
- 20:22more interested in something else. But don't you think Raymond is the eld?
- 20:25Certainly looks that way, doesn't it. Oh, mister Lynn, Oh,
- 20:26mister Cutter. This is terrible. Never before such a thing happened in my
- 20:30office. Mister Lynn. Did you ever see this will before? Yes?
- 20:34And that's why I can't understand it. I stumped in to see mister Gould
- 20:37the other afternoon, and he showed me the will he had just thrown up
- 20:41by himself. He bragged about saving a lawyer's fee by using his own typewriter
- 20:45and copying a will I had drawn for him some time ago. He said
- 20:48he'd changed the names of the ears around, but otherwise it was just the
- 20:52same. What is this will? You now have, to the best of
- 20:55my knowledge, it was and is, and get the signature to say why
- 20:59he changed the will. Simply said he'd learned something about his son he never
- 21:03knew before, and that he'd be done if he was going to leave his
- 21:07money to a chief like that. So this fake will is a copy of
- 21:10mister Goold's own will as he drew it up. I think so, as
- 21:14far as I can remember. Oh, it's incredible. Well, Percy,
- 21:17let's go back and talk to him as Waters again. Right, situation has
- 21:22changed somewhat since I last saw. Oh, by the way, mister Lindy,
- 21:25you mind if I take this pony will along with me, not at
- 21:26all it will do any good in finding out what's happened. I think maybe
- 21:30it will. Thanks. I see you as soon as I learned something I
- 21:45mus Waters is that you and the cook witnessed the will which mister Gould drew
- 21:49up himself. Yeah, we did. Is this your signature? Why is
- 21:56why? How could he say? Because this will is a forgery? Signatures
- 21:59and all? Did either of the sons ever borrow their father's typewriter? L
- 22:03They did most of them? Every little while. Patrick, go upstairs and
- 22:07get me a sample of typing from that machine. Of course, Nick,
- 22:10bring you back every letter there is, good girl, how much Waters tell
- 22:14me? Was there any friction between mister Gould and either of the boys.
- 22:18See him? And Raymond used to argue all the time. Mister Goole didn't
- 22:22like the way Raymond carried on, but him and Peter got along all right.
- 22:26Mm hmm. Did mister Goule have an argument with anyone shortly before he
- 22:30drew up the new will you know? Yep? He did. I was
- 22:33going by his room the evening before and I could hear him giving somebody what's
- 22:37forward? To whom was he talking? Well, no, I couldn't tell
- 22:41you. The other voice was so low. I don't know who it was.
- 22:44But mister Goole got a letter that afternoon made him all excited. Maybe
- 22:48that was what we were talking about. Yes, maybe it was. And
- 22:51that reminds me, mister Katta another letter come today for that same party,
- 22:55you mean, the one that got him so excited before. Yeah, recognized
- 22:57the fancy henwriting. I want to see it. Yes, I think I
- 23:00better. Dear mister Gould, I haven't you answered my last letter. I
- 23:10can't wait any longer if you don't do. But I asked you to.
- 23:12In three days, I'm going to start something and you don't want that to
- 23:17you? Your friend, Alice Fenwick, you're an address and I'm blessed one
- 23:22place. Oh thanks, Yes, that's the typewriter that was used to type
- 23:30the phone and will be on any questions. Well, Patsy, if you've
- 23:33come along with me, I'd like to introduce you to miss Alice Fenwick.
- 23:36Who in the world is Alice Fenwick? Well, after I introduce her to
- 23:40you, you can introduce her to me. I don't know her either,
- 23:41but I expect you shortly. Gosh, this is a lonely section out here,
- 23:56pretty well out in the suburbs. I remember then, now? Is
- 24:02he that car parked in the dark shadows under that tree? Yes, why,
- 24:04that's the car that ran into me the night I was hurt. Are
- 24:07you sure? Of course, I'm sure. I recognize that patch of light
- 24:08colored paint on the rear fender. What's you're doing out here? I wonder
- 24:14maybe there's some connection between that car and the Fenwick girl. He lives in
- 24:17the next house. Harry, let's find out, mabbe it's more trouble.
- 24:22I hope we're not too late to prevent it. If there is, Mugo
- 24:23knocked me out. Plays all together too rough? All right, this is
- 24:27close enough. Okay, don't make any more noise than is necessary that I
- 24:34won't. Somebody's having a fight in their nake sounds that way. I looked
- 24:41there through the kitchen window. It's streightening her. I'm got to get in
- 24:45man fast. He's shocking her. All right. You take your hands off
- 24:52that car. Stop with your hands where you come? Take your hands up
- 24:56in your mouth? Shut? Pat is? Yes, here your egg?
- 25:00How are you? What are you doing here? None of your business?
- 25:03Who sent you? They've got your calls for your only chances to tell what
- 25:06you know? Jack sent me? Tell me to scare so she'd shut up
- 25:10a bus? Jack? Who Jack gool? Who's Jack good? Old man
- 25:14gold Son, the guy who killed the old man? You sure his name
- 25:17of Jack? Well? How should I know? It's what they call him.
- 25:21How's the girl passing? She'll be all right, Nick, more care
- 25:23than heard, I think. Okay, I'll call Maria and tell him coming
- 25:26down. If you picked up Raymond, if he can get Peter to join
- 25:29us, our car party will be complete and we can settle this case.
- 25:44Are you caught Raymond at Madam? Yeah? Excellent? Didn't get fired,
- 25:48I'll say, didn't. I'm glad you didn't let him get away. He
- 25:49has to pay for what he did. I didn't do it. I tell
- 25:52you no matter what, you go all right? All right? You know
- 25:55what? Nick Raymond here says he only run away because the evidence looks so
- 25:59black at and Stephen that he was afraid he'd be convicted. And that's just
- 26:02the way the murderer wanted her to look. Maddy, you mean he didn't
- 26:06do it, Nick, He did not. Peter killed his brother. No
- 26:10better, sepparate where you are, Peter. I want to check my story
- 26:12for me. You haven't done anything against me, not a thing. As
- 26:15a cop outside the door, souns Hod wouldn't try nothing. Are you sure
- 26:18you don't want those other two brought in? Nick? Not yet, Maddy.
- 26:22Oh, here's the story about a week ago, mister Gould got a
- 26:26letter from a girl named Alice Fenwick telling him Peter had promised to marry her,
- 26:30and then, on the strength of that promise, she had loaned him
- 26:33almost every cent she had, several thousands, she says. Eh, Peter
- 26:37gambled away and then told her he was through with her. She told him
- 26:40there was a baby coming and insisted he marry her. He left at it,
- 26:45so she wrote his father. After a row with Peter, which Miss
- 26:48Waters overheard, Goold changed his will. Somehow Peter found out about it and
- 26:53got the idea that if he copied the will, which left everything to Raymond,
- 26:56copied it just as it was, and porged it's a he could claim,
- 27:00just what he later did, that Raymond had forged the will and killed
- 27:03his father to get the money. Nick, That's just what he said in
- 27:06the lawyer's office. That was part of his plan too. Raymonds running away
- 27:10was the action of an innocent man who was scared, so Peter faked the
- 27:12will then killed father. Correct And if the plan had gone as Peter had
- 27:17expected it too, I would have been executed for father's death and Peter would
- 27:21have inherited all the money. You can't prove a word of what you said
- 27:22caught out. I can, or I wouldn't be saying it was you,
- 27:26not your father, who wrote the note saying he'd been murdered. You did
- 27:29that to be sure nobody thought he had died unnatural death, and you might
- 27:32have gotten away with it, But you left the wrong pencil with a note.
- 27:34Do you call that? Prow And after my interview with you two boys
- 27:37that afternoon, you heard the thug to kill me and it was just pure
- 27:41luck. That he failed. That's a lie. And then this afternoon,
- 27:42when you saw me up and around again, you got panicky that Alice Spenwick
- 27:45might be found to tell her story, so you sent the same thug to
- 27:48kill her too. Peter did all that he did. The thug didn't know
- 27:52your correct name, so I asked him to come down here and identify you,
- 27:55all right, get him with your patrick? All right, Hugh?
- 28:02Is this man sitting here the one who hired you to bump me off and
- 28:04kill the Fanwick girl? Yes, the guy you lie. I never saw
- 28:08you before. Oh that's too way it is. You're gonna leave me to
- 28:12take the ref alone. Huh, that's doing jack here, This is me
- 28:18now white a minute at you, Nick, you're a wonder. But this
- 28:22one thing that bothers me. Why were the only fingerprints we found on the
- 28:26strong box? Im? That's easy, Maddy. You were a criminal and
- 28:30wanted to be sure you didn't leave any prince on a shiny copper surface.
- 28:34Would you wipe off the box before or after you handle it? Oh that's
- 28:37a silly question. Why after? Not? True? Well? Huh oh
- 28:44yeah, yeah, I see what you mean. It was the guy who
- 28:47handled the box ahead of Raymond, who was really the guilty one. No
- 28:52one ever wiped the box off before you handle it, Raymond, is a
- 28:55matter of curiosity. When did you touch that box? Why that's the father's
- 28:59death? Well, the doctor I looked in the room, and so the
- 29:02bus was unlocked, so I sneaked a quick look at the will. Well,
- 29:07all I got to say is Son, that your curiosity almost got you
- 29:10executed. If it hadn't been for Nick. Here, suppose you watch out
- 29:15next time you feel nosy, you may not get off so easy. Well,
- 29:26Nick, it's about time to hear something about next week's story. I
- 29:30think how about it? Next week, Ken, we're going to hear about
- 29:33a moving picture in with Waldo took an active part, but not an active
- 29:37enough part. Other clues were a few yellow hairs, a pair of Hollywood
- 29:41sunglasses, and a movie director who's looked in fifty years didn't change at all.
- 29:45And what do you call this mixed up mess? I call it the
- 29:48case of the Make Bee Leave Robbery. Nick Catter Master Detective, which is
- 30:11produced and directed by Jack McGregor, is copyrighted by Street and Smith Publications Incorporated.
- 30:18Pictured stories of Nick Carter appear in every issue of The Shadow Comings.
- 30:22In the broadcast of Nick Cotter Master Detective, Long Clark is starred as Nick.

- 30:32music is played by George Wright. Script is by Jack McGregor. Any resemblance
- 30:37in these programs to actual persons living or dead, or to actual places is
- 30:41purely coincidental. Nick Carter Master Detective is presented over most of these Mutual stations
- 30:47each week at this same time. This is Ken Paul saying so long until
- 30:52next week. This program was heard in Canada through the facilities of the Canadian
- 31:07Broadcasting Corporation. This is welcome back, well as usual, a rite complicated
- 31:19plot for Nick Carter, with the murderer trying to make the trying to really
- 31:29twist things around, but it's not overall satisfactory. Conclusion. I do like
- 31:33Maddie here a bit, at least, giving some sarcastic pushback to Nick's request
- 31:40for or demands for constant police cooperation. Nick does get caught flat footed here,
- 31:47and it's somewhat amazing to consider, you know, the thing to do
- 31:51with Nick Carter's not to attack him directly. You just attack his car,
- 31:56and you wait for him to get so mad about the car that you can
- 31:59go ahead and try and get a good blow in. And that does appear
- 32:04to have been the key and pretty much the only way to stop Nick Carter.
- 32:08And I've heard that long Clark give that type of performance before, just
- 32:13not in this sort of context. Is the angry you know, going from
- 32:17master detective angry guy, you just hit my car. Well, uh,
- 32:24that's how I'll actually do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with yours
- 32:29truly, Johnny Dowler, and then join us next Thursday for Nick Carter.
