- 0:00has it been like in Auburn so far this?
- 0:02>> Uh, it's been great. The transition's
- 0:04been really smooth. I think that, you
- 0:06know, everything that everybody talked
- 0:09about with the community and the
- 0:11university and and the support and the
- 0:13most importantly the people. Um, it's
- 0:16it's been it's been great. You know, my
- 0:18family's uh got here just after the
- 0:21first of the year and kids are in school
- 0:23and my wife's finding her way around
- 0:25town. So it's it's been everything that
- 0:28you know and more than our expectations
- 0:30uh were coming here.
- 0:31>> Tell me about your relationship with
- 0:32Goish.
- 0:34>> So Coach Galish and I go way back to
- 0:37shoot I think 2005. Um we were both uh
- 0:42he was working as a student coach at at
- 0:43Ohio State at the time. I believe I was
- 0:45a student coach at Ashton University and
- 0:48just kind of getting around to camps and
- 0:51you know trying to network and um
- 0:55build build relationships from that
- 0:57standpoint that you know we were both at
- 0:59the time in our careers where we were
- 1:02looking to move on to maybe graduate
- 1:04assistant jobs and kind of get our foot
- 1:05in the door. And uh again trying to at
- 1:08that time you know you had these camps
- 1:10that were you know 3 4 days and a couple
- 1:13nights. And so first time I met him was
- 1:16down at uh at an Ohio State camp like I
- 1:18said in 2005. And and here we are uh you
- 1:22know we go down there and you know we
- 1:24think we're going to you know at least I
- 1:26did thought I was going to be you know
- 1:28working this camp and getting to meet
- 1:29all these coaches and everything and I
- 1:30get there and they've got all the gas
- 1:32and the student coaches working with the
- 1:33youth. So, so we're working with about
- 1:36fourth through 8th graders and uh you
- 1:38know had to watch them in the dorms and
- 1:41make sure that they were you know where
- 1:43they needed to be when they were
- 1:44supposed to be there and then got a
- 1:46chance to to coach them you know during
- 1:48the day and but that was really where it
- 1:49started for us and I think that it
- 1:51didn't take us long to to realize that
- 1:54you know we were not only both trying to
- 1:56accomplish the same thing but feel like
- 1:59there was a lot of common value there um
- 2:01and we were both trying to do it the
- 2:02same way you you know, both of us were
- 2:04trying to come up through it um the same
- 2:07way and build a network and and uh you
- 2:10know, work really really hard and do any
- 2:12job that we could u to show people that
- 2:15we were willing to learn and willing to
- 2:16work and I think you know so that's
- 2:18where it goes all the way back to there
- 2:19and then it just kind of grew and you
- 2:21know as I've said before I you know I've
- 2:23known him for a long time as a as a
- 2:25friend and and then you know got to know
- 2:27him obviously as you know as a husband
- 2:29and a father as his family grew and and
- 2:32then um getting a chance to go be a part
- 2:34of his staff a year ago. Really learned
- 2:36a lot about him as a as a leader and a
- 2:38teacher. Um and you know, don't can't
- 2:41can't say enough great things about uh
- 2:43the impact that that he's had on me from
- 2:46afar. Uh and just the opportunity to to
- 2:48be a part of his staff and have our
- 2:50family here with with him and and his
- 2:53wife Lex and and obviously his his kids
- 2:55Corbin and Bear has been it's like I
- 2:58said, been a long relationship. Uh but
- 3:00uh but one that's just grown, you know,
- 3:02as as the years have gone.
- 3:03>> Are you from Ohio?
- 3:04>> I am. Yeah. Originally from just outside
- 3:06of the Mansfield area, small town called
- 3:08Shelby, Ohio. So um that's where my wife
- 3:12and I both, you know, are from. We went
- 3:15to high school together and uh so yeah.
- 3:17But yeah, I feel like there's a cradle
- 3:18of coaches like there's some great ones
- 3:20come through that area. I mean Jim
- 3:21Trestle and Urban Meyer and stuff. Is it
- 3:23just different up there? I know I know
- 3:25like Masselon is a capital, but is is
- 3:29high school football a huge deal there?
- 3:30>> Yeah, I mean football is really
- 3:32important. I I I come from a family
- 3:33that, you know, my grandfather was a was
- 3:35a high school football coach for 38
- 3:37years. Uh both my uncles each have over
- 3:3925 years of high school coaching in
- 3:41their in their on their resumes. Um and
- 3:45so I always that was always something
- 3:47that was exciting to me. I've been
- 3:49standing on a on a on a sideline on a
- 3:51Friday night ever since I can remember
- 3:53as a as a little kid as a ball boy and
- 3:55you know doing just being around team,
- 3:58being around coaching, being around
- 4:00players um and really seeing what that
- 4:02was all about and and I I think that was
- 4:05that was initially the plan for myself
- 4:07and for my wife. We thought we were
- 4:08going to go back to our hometown and
- 4:10when we got done in college and and
- 4:11teach and coach. Um, and then we were
- 4:14given an opportunity, like I said, over
- 4:16at Ashlin University to to be a student
- 4:18coach there and then on to Bowling Green
- 4:20as a GA and so on and so forth. So, but
- 4:22yeah, that's how it all started. What
- 4:23was the
