- 0:00Speaker 1: Org The crews of the Nozark by David Cory. A leak,
- 0:06Speaker 1: look out, look out, a boat in sight. Turn quickly
- 0:10Speaker 1: to the left or right. You'll have a smash up.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Sure as fate. Alas my warning came too late, sang
- 0:18Speaker 1: the weather cock, and oh dear me, he was right.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Crash bang. The Nozark shivered from bow to stern, and
- 0:28Speaker 1: all the animals were thrown off their feet. Little Marjory
- 0:32Speaker 1: awoke with a start. It was just daylight, and far
- 0:35Speaker 1: off in the east the rising sun was chinging the
- 0:38Speaker 1: sky pink and gold. She hurriedly put on her clothes
- 0:41Speaker 1: and ran out on deck, where she met Captain Noah
- 0:44Speaker 1: and his sons, whales and porpoises. Exclaimed Captain Doah, mister
- 0:49Speaker 1: Jonah has been asleep at the switch again, I'll bet.
- 0:53Speaker 1: And then he ran forward and looked over the bow
- 0:54Speaker 1: of the Ark. Only a few yards off was the
- 0:57Speaker 1: charred hull of a vessel riding look in the water.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Quickly examining his own ship, Captain Noah discovered a hole
- 1:05Speaker 1: on the starboard side, and then all of a sudden,
- 1:09Speaker 1: the animals came rushing up on deck. The Ark is
- 1:12Speaker 1: filling with water. Cried, Missus elephant, and my slippers are
- 1:16Speaker 1: all soaking wet. If I had remained below another minute,
- 1:19Speaker 1: they would have been ruined. She had hardly finished when
- 1:23Speaker 1: all the rats and maya scrambled up the companionway. A
- 1:27Speaker 1: bad sign, said Captain Noah. It shows the ark is sinking.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Missus Noah gave a scream. She had hastily thrown a
- 1:35Speaker 1: kimono over a night dress at the first warning, and
- 1:38Speaker 1: had hurried on deck. Don't worry, said little Margery, bravely.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Captain Noah will stop the league, I hope, so he said. Then,
- 1:47Speaker 1: turning to the passengers, he asked, who will volunteer to
- 1:51Speaker 1: go with me below deck? I will, shouted Han, and
- 1:55Speaker 1: so will I said the elephant. Come along, then, said
- 1:59Speaker 1: Captain Noah. Throw me down the tarpaulin and some planks
- 2:02Speaker 1: he called up a few minutes later. But oh, dear me,
- 2:07Speaker 1: the water had gained such headway that the tarbulin was
- 2:10Speaker 1: of no use at all. And I don't know what
- 2:12Speaker 1: would have happened if the elephant hadn't sat down squarely
- 2:15Speaker 1: on the whole blocking it up so that not a
- 2:18Speaker 1: single drop of water leaked in. Bully for you, cried
- 2:21Speaker 1: Captain Noah. That's the best stunt I've seen yet. It's
- 2:25Speaker 1: not very comfortable, said the elephant, with a shiver. My,
- 2:29Speaker 1: but the water's chilly. Start the pumps, commanded Captain Noah,
- 2:34Speaker 1: rushing to the foot of the companionway set some of
- 2:37Speaker 1: the animals to work well. After a while, the ark
- 2:41Speaker 1: was pumped dry, and everybody heaved a sigh of relief.
- 2:45Speaker 1: How long do you expect me to be a water plug,
- 2:47Speaker 1: asked the elephant. You don't expect me to sit here
- 2:50Speaker 1: for the rest of the voyage. I don't know what
- 2:52Speaker 1: we'll do if you get up, answered Captain Noah. Neither
- 2:56Speaker 1: do I said the elephant. Let's call mister Jonah, said
- 3:00Speaker 1: Captain Noah. What's the use, said the elephant. What good
- 3:04Speaker 1: will he do? If he hadn't been asleep at the tiller,
- 3:07Speaker 1: we never would have had the accident. We might punish
- 3:11Speaker 1: him for a neglect of duty, said Captain Noah. We'll
- 3:14Speaker 1: plug the hole up with him. He can set on
- 3:16Speaker 1: the opening for a punishment. Great idea, chuckled the elephant.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Bring him down. So Captain Noah hastened on deck to
- 3:24Speaker 1: look for poor mister Jonah and pretty soon he came
- 3:27Speaker 1: back with mister Jonah, who of course didn't know what
- 3:31Speaker 1: they were going to do with him. What do you
- 3:33Speaker 1: want me for, he asked. It's pretty dent down here, hello,
- 3:38Speaker 1: said the elephant. Excuse my not rising, certainly, said mister Jonah,
- 3:43Speaker 1: but you don't look very comfortable. And then, quick as
- 3:47Speaker 1: a wink, the elephant reached out his trunk and grabbed
- 3:50Speaker 1: poor mister Jonah. Help murder, yelled Jonah, nearly strangled by
- 3:56Speaker 1: the water, which rushed into the ark as the elephant
- 3:59Speaker 1: got up, keep quiet, commanded Captain Noah, and then the
- 4:03Speaker 1: elephant pushed poor mister Jonah into the hole. It's all
- 4:07Speaker 1: your fault that we had this accident. Now you can
- 4:09Speaker 1: stop up the leak. Mister Jonah was too frightened to speak. Finally,
- 4:14Speaker 1: when he partly recovered from his fright he said, but
- 4:18Speaker 1: what am I to do? Don't do a thing, said
- 4:21Speaker 1: Captain Noah, pushing him down as he started get up.
- 4:24Speaker 1: You just sit there and be a hero. I won't,
- 4:28Speaker 1: cried mister Jonah. Then we'll all drown, and you too,
- 4:31Speaker 1: said Captain Noah, And just then the weather coop shouted
- 4:35Speaker 1: out loud and clear, land ahead, Land Ahead, and in
- 4:40Speaker 1: a few short seconds the arc rolled upon a sandy
- 4:43Speaker 1: beach and came to a standstill. Throw out, the anchor,
- 4:47Speaker 1: commanded Captain Noah. We won't take any chances this time.
- 4:51Speaker 1: And pretty soon all the animals were playing on the sand,
- 4:54Speaker 1: while Missus Noah with Marjorie and the boys mading fire
- 4:58Speaker 1: under some palm trees. Suddenly Captain Noah remembered mister Jonah.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Thunder and lightning, he exclaimed, and at once descended into
- 5:07Speaker 1: the hold, where he found poor mister Jonah still sitting
- 5:10Speaker 1: on the hole in the ark. A rise, noble man,
- 5:13Speaker 1: said Captain Noah, bursting into laughter. Thank goodness, said Jonah,
- 5:19Speaker 1: I feel as stiff as a glass bottle stopper. And
- 5:22Speaker 1: in the next chapter you shall hear of a wonderful
- 5:25Speaker 1: picnic which they all had on this little green island
- 5:28Speaker 1: in the middle of the big blue ocean. End of
- 5:32Speaker 1: chapter ten. Read by Nancy Cochranebergen Gilbert, Arizona, August twenty three,
