- 0:15Speaker 1: Pushkin. Suki Waterhouse started professional life as a model and
- 0:23Speaker 1: actress in the UK. A full fledged music career might
- 0:26Speaker 1: have seemed far fetched, but she quickly found an authentic
- 0:29Speaker 1: voice as a singer songwriter. She put out some beautiful
- 0:32Speaker 1: demos that caught the attention of the legendary sub pop label,
- 0:35Speaker 1: which put out her first album, I Can't Let Go
- 0:38Speaker 1: and her latest memoir of a Sparkle Muffin. Suki's music
- 0:42Speaker 1: first started catching on with audiences through TikTok, but he
- 0:45Speaker 1: oftener album wasn't built with social media audiences in mind.
- 0:49Speaker 1: It's an eighteen song journey through the life of a
- 0:51Speaker 1: thirty year old woman who had some wild times in
- 0:53Speaker 1: her twenties, survived the sadness memorialized on her first album,
- 0:57Speaker 1: and has come to find happiness and even a family
- 1:00Speaker 1: on the other side. On today's episode, I talked with
- 1:04Speaker 1: Suki Waterhouse about building an organic career in music, what
- 1:07Speaker 1: it was like opening for Taylor's Swift at Wembley Stadium
- 1:10Speaker 1: just last month, and she tells a great Jack White
- 1:13Speaker 1: story that inspired one of my favorite lines from her
- 1:16Speaker 1: first album. This is broken record liner notes for the
- 1:22Speaker 1: digital age. I'm justin Richman. Here's my conversation with Sukie
- 1:27Speaker 1: Waterhouse from Amazon's Studio one twenty six. To see the
- 1:31Speaker 1: full video version of this episode, go to YouTube dot
- 1:33Speaker 1: com slash Broken Record podcast. Congratulations on the soon to
- 1:39Speaker 1: be released memoir of a Sparkle Muffin.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Thank You, Thank You. I can't believe it. Actually it's
- 1:44Speaker 2: too like over two weeks, but it's pretty much two
- 1:47Speaker 2: weeks away.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Yeah, come on, right up.
- 1:49Speaker 3: I know, it's always that strange thing.
- 1:51Speaker 2: You put so much work in and there's kind of
- 1:53Speaker 2: singles coming out and there's rollout, and then you kind
- 1:56Speaker 2: of actually you kind of forget that everyone hasn't had
- 1:59Speaker 2: the record yet.
- 2:00Speaker 1: You've heard it a ton, Yeah, I've.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Had it a bunch of times.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I just did a listening party the other day, which
- 2:05Speaker 2: was just really fun nice because you know, you get
- 2:07Speaker 2: together like a kind of one hundred or something and
- 2:09Speaker 2: you play them and you get to see their expressions
- 2:11Speaker 2: and you you kind of get like a real.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Sense of it.
- 2:13Speaker 2: And yeah, and I've been going around and like showing
- 2:17Speaker 2: it to some of the streamers and stuff like that,
- 2:19Speaker 2: but you kind of forget that everyone else, apart from
- 2:21Speaker 2: like your friends and all the people that you love,
- 2:23Speaker 2: Like I haven't heard it yet, so I don't know.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm excited.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Rollouts is always really fun because it's unexpected. I feel
- 2:29Speaker 2: like the next few months you really have no idea,
- 2:32Speaker 2: like what's gonna happen and what's gonna connect, and it's
- 2:36Speaker 2: kind of just like a bit of a mystery.
- 2:38Speaker 1: And it's it's it's yeah, absolutely, I mean, obviously you
- 2:42Speaker 1: have a tour booked, but in terms of like what
- 2:45Speaker 1: sort of from the album like grabs people's attention, actually,
- 2:47Speaker 1: you know, it's you really don't know.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Yeah, you have no idea. This is a long album
- 2:51Speaker 3: as well.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Actually this is like an eighteen song record, which is Yeah,
- 2:55Speaker 2: it was kind of like it longing.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I was shocked about how long it was. That I mean,
- 2:59Speaker 1: I love that it was long. It was cool, and
- 3:00Speaker 1: I ended up like, you know, because it's longer, like
- 3:03Speaker 1: I started thinking about it in sections, you know, almost
- 3:07Speaker 1: like I guess, broken up the way like an old
- 3:09Speaker 1: LP would be. Like it was like a double LP
- 3:11Speaker 1: flip sides. Like certain certain groups of songs have like
- 3:15Speaker 1: their own character. It feels like together and.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I don't know, like yeah exactly.
- 3:18Speaker 1: I now think of them as like a larger piece.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Literally, parts of the memoir are together, like songs like
- 3:25Speaker 2: Gateway and Oh My God and Blackout. I feel like
- 3:27Speaker 2: a kind of inside there they're in like a kind
- 3:29Speaker 2: of like destructive section of it.
- 3:31Speaker 3: But I guess, yeah, that's kind.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Of all the bye though, and then into like OMG,
- 3:35Speaker 1: like that's kind of its own section. Two.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:37Speaker 2: A Lallabli is a song I haven't listened to in
- 3:39Speaker 2: a long time actually because I kind of I feel like, yeah,
- 3:42Speaker 2: I don't know, there's like this line in it about
- 3:45Speaker 2: taking sleeping pearls and stuff. I don't know, you know
- 3:47Speaker 2: when you're just like, oh, God, like it's sort of
- 3:49Speaker 2: like you you wrote it really, just like, oh, I'm
- 3:52Speaker 2: putting exactly how I feel in this one very like
- 3:55Speaker 2: hazy moment where I've like written everything out and I'm like, oh,
- 3:58Speaker 2: this isn't like this isn't every night, but this is
- 4:00Speaker 2: you know what I mean, Like it's yeah, it's one
- 4:03Speaker 2: of those ones that felt like a really personal kind
- 4:06Speaker 2: of like etching.
- 4:09Speaker 1: And I'm surprised that's the that's the lyric that us
- 4:13Speaker 1: in God, because I mean, I don't know, it doesn't
- 4:15Speaker 1: seem to me that I mean through your whole I
- 4:17Speaker 1: mean starting with brutally like way, yes, yeah, not to
- 4:22Speaker 1: frame it that way more fucked up, but you know
- 4:24Speaker 1: there are guess as I was listening, I was like, wow,
- 4:26Speaker 1: there's like, you know, you have some really your writing
- 4:29Speaker 1: is really cool. I mean there's some like really maybe
- 4:33Speaker 1: it's because you're British, but there's like a bit of
- 4:35Speaker 1: a acerbic kind of tone to certain certain lines that
- 4:39Speaker 1: are just like fun. You know, they almost make them
- 4:41Speaker 1: like hip hop lines in a sense, like they're not
- 4:43Speaker 1: quite a disk, but they're kind of like a little
- 4:45Speaker 1: mean in a weird way, like.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess maybe I am a little mean, you know,
- 4:49Speaker 2: or a little bit like yeah, a little bit, a
- 4:51Speaker 2: little bit cutting.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, a little cutting. I think I think that's
- 4:53Speaker 1: what it is.
- 4:54Speaker 2: You know, or like dad pan or like sometimes yeah,
- 4:57Speaker 2: sometimes like you can say things as sort of like
- 5:00Speaker 2: I'll use words or whatever, I can do it in
- 5:02Speaker 2: an interview someone's where I'm like, oh my god, like
- 5:04Speaker 2: that's been you know, like it comes across as being
- 5:07Speaker 2: very like different to how you maybe said it with
- 5:10Speaker 2: your tone. Yes, but yeah, I think actually, yeah, you
- 5:13Speaker 2: said like British and I think that was something I
- 5:15Speaker 2: think on my first record, I've I've always been like
- 5:19Speaker 2: very inspired by like that kind of American Americana, like
- 5:23Speaker 2: almost like like certain kind of like country folky elements.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I think that came up quite a lot on the
- 5:29Speaker 2: first record, and this one, I think I like lean
- 5:32Speaker 2: into a lot more of the things that I grew
- 5:35Speaker 2: up with, like a lot more of like kind of
- 5:37Speaker 2: ramones or like English bands, like a little bit more
- 5:40Speaker 2: Oasis and you know things. I think I was like, yeah,
- 5:43Speaker 2: songs like Blackout Drunk, I kind of wanted that like Ramonesy,
- 5:47Speaker 2: bloc party almost like the things that I was listening
- 5:50Speaker 2: to in two thousand and eight, like stomping Down.
- 5:53Speaker 3: I was stomping around New York.
- 5:54Speaker 2: With like these like big hideous like Doc Martin's I
- 5:58Speaker 2: got on eBay and you know that that kind of
- 6:00Speaker 2: like that kind of feeling.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Especially I'm I'm.
- 6:03Speaker 1: So happy you said them. That's one of my favorite
- 6:04Speaker 1: That's one of my favorite. You know, I don't really
- 6:06Speaker 1: listen to them so much anymore because I just I've
- 6:08Speaker 1: listened to them so much that I feel like I
- 6:10Speaker 1: have their entire catalog, like I could recall it at
- 6:12Speaker 1: any moment, right, But when you say that, like the
- 6:15Speaker 1: b B Blackout Drunk, it's almost like twenty twenty twenty four.
- 6:20Speaker 1: It's kind of got that kind of upbeat kind of.
- 6:24Speaker 2: And it's just like such a I really love that
- 6:26Speaker 2: song actually, because if it came out so just like
- 6:28Speaker 2: as this as a story and just felt like okay,
- 6:32Speaker 2: it was it was kind of like taken from a
- 6:34Speaker 2: little bit of reality of like talking to friends and
- 6:37Speaker 2: being like, oh god, we hate it and like you know, oh,
- 6:40Speaker 2: your boyfriend got like way too drunk and it's like annoying,
- 6:42Speaker 2: you know, and then we took I kind of took
- 6:44Speaker 2: took it from there and then just made up this
- 6:47Speaker 2: story of you know, going out and this girl get
- 6:52Speaker 2: you know, he's gotten too drunk, and he's he's kind
- 6:55Speaker 2: of like touching all the other girls weirdly and like
- 6:58Speaker 2: you know, and I'm so pissed and he's falling asleep
- 7:00Speaker 2: next to me and I can't wait to like wake
- 7:02Speaker 2: him up and tell him all of the shit that
- 7:04Speaker 2: he's done wrong.
- 7:05Speaker 1: You know.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Like that it was like came out as this very
- 7:08Speaker 2: like concise story, which kind of doesn't always happen actually
- 7:13Speaker 2: that much, where you're just you're really enjoying going like
- 7:17Speaker 2: you know what, Yeah, you're kind of just like playing
- 7:19Speaker 2: off everything in your head, like, well, would you like
- 7:21Speaker 2: it if I cheated on you?
- 7:23Speaker 3: Like how would you like that? Like you'd hate that?
- 7:25Speaker 2: And it kind of Yeah, it just came out on Monco,
- 7:28Speaker 2: So that was that was a really fun one.
- 7:30Speaker 1: What what I mean given that it only came from
- 7:33Speaker 1: a scrap of like not even necessarily autobiography, but just
- 7:36Speaker 1: came from like, but it is a very so I'll
- 7:39Speaker 1: say this, listen to that song, I realized, I don't
- 7:42Speaker 1: think I've ever been that person. I know many people person,
- 7:46Speaker 1: I know that relationship, relationship that's a very relatable, but
- 7:51Speaker 1: I've never heard it actually like put in song that way.
- 7:54Speaker 1: M But what what.
- 7:56Speaker 2: About Probably plenty of songs about people getting drunk, right
- 7:59Speaker 2: or like yeah.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Being a drunk, but like not like just that dynamic
- 8:02Speaker 1: though of like the boyfriend's probably pretty decent person sober,
- 8:07Speaker 1: but then goes out and gets way too fucked up,
- 8:09Speaker 1: probably way too often, right, does some fucked up things
- 8:12Speaker 1: and then yeah, the sort of the thrill of being
- 8:14Speaker 1: able to I guess what must be the thriller. Wise,
- 8:16Speaker 1: I don't know if people say I'm just being able
- 8:18Speaker 1: to sort of rub it in their noses.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Yeah, like why do.
- 8:22Speaker 1: You do this?
- 8:23Speaker 3: But yeah, yeah, I get Yeah.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Having that be like a kind of a fun thing,
- 8:28Speaker 2: I guess is when you can take something that's actually
- 8:31Speaker 2: probably quite difficult in real life and make it sort
- 8:33Speaker 2: of like celebrate it and empower it and like and
- 8:36Speaker 2: and make it kind of like an enjoyable thing to
- 8:39Speaker 2: to sing. Is Yeah, I don't know that one. Yeah,
- 8:43Speaker 2: that's it's it's a funny one. It's kind of like
- 8:45Speaker 2: I'd forgotten about that song for a long time. And
- 8:48Speaker 2: then I actually changed the single. I do it all
- 8:50Speaker 2: the time, but I changed it to Blackout Drunk.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Was it supposed to.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Pretty last minute.
- 8:55Speaker 2: It was meant to be Gateway, Yeah, which is like
- 8:58Speaker 2: the first song on the record. But I'd done like
- 9:00Speaker 2: oh my god, I'd done my fun and I'd done
- 9:03Speaker 2: faded and then it felt like more it felt like
- 9:06Speaker 2: kind of in the same like scope of everything.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Yeah, So I don't know, Yeah, I do that.
- 9:12Speaker 2: I do that all the time, Like I'll just I'll
- 9:14Speaker 2: just completely throw it out the window and everyone's like
- 9:17Speaker 2: I kind of enjoyed and that, you know, when the
- 9:18Speaker 2: label's got the plan and everything's planning, it's going to
- 9:21Speaker 2: be gate We're jong the I'm like, no, it's not,
- 9:24Speaker 2: we're changing the whole thing.
- 9:25Speaker 1: You know, you feeling it in real time exactly. Oh,
- 9:28Speaker 1: people are really kind of I'm really liking this one now. No,
- 9:31Speaker 1: I feel as it feels.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't feel I didn't feel ready for Gateway,
- 9:34Speaker 2: even though it's like it is one of my favorite
- 9:36Speaker 2: songs off the record and I like love it.
- 9:37Speaker 3: It just yeah, I don't know.
- 9:39Speaker 2: You just like you kind of get a sense or
- 9:41Speaker 2: I guess when like or if everyone's like, oh, this
- 9:44Speaker 2: should be the single, this is the most thing like
- 9:46Speaker 2: that also gives me like an allergic reaction and like
- 9:49Speaker 2: change change change, like cause correct, because I just think
- 9:52Speaker 2: it's Yeah, I don't know, I feel like in music, right,
- 9:54Speaker 2: I don't know. It just doesn't feel we're not in that.
- 9:58Speaker 3: That doesn't work. I don't think it works.
- 10:00Speaker 1: That's just the metrics, the sort of well it doesn't
- 10:03Speaker 1: it doesn't.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Yeah, Like just because something sounds like, oh that sounds
- 10:07Speaker 2: like a single, it's just not where. It's not where
- 10:09Speaker 2: like culture is at the moment. It's not where like
- 10:12Speaker 2: you can it's not about just like the most single
- 10:16Speaker 2: singly song or the one that every in fact, if anything,
- 10:19Speaker 2: I'm always like, no, it's the opposite, you know what
- 10:21Speaker 2: I mean?
- 10:22Speaker 1: No, definitely, Yeah, I don't know what what Faded is
- 10:28Speaker 1: another one. I actually want to pull up some of
- 10:29Speaker 1: some of the.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Some of the lyrics.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Everyone's been like, what are these lyrics? Like they're all
- 10:34Speaker 2: over the place.
- 10:37Speaker 1: You used to call me yogo? Yeah, I made I'm
- 10:39Speaker 1: gonna joke that all your friends are leaving, yeah or
- 10:41Speaker 1: all yeah.
- 10:44Speaker 3: It's like little vin I feel like that one.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that one. That song like really goes back to
- 10:50Speaker 2: that one, like really goes back to like being like
- 10:53Speaker 2: sixteen seventeen, and like like the kind of the things
- 10:56Speaker 2: that yeah, like the things that people were saying to
- 10:59Speaker 2: like kind of the things that it's not. It's not
- 11:01Speaker 2: I've seen like stuff on the internet being like who's
- 11:03Speaker 2: it about, and it's like it's so it's it's sort
- 11:06Speaker 2: of about like a couple of different people from when
- 11:09Speaker 2: I was like sixteen, So you know what I mean.
- 11:10Speaker 2: It's like and then there's like you know, there's like
- 11:13Speaker 2: kind of other things in that too, but it's like, yeah,
- 11:16Speaker 2: it takes little like vignettes and it was like this
- 11:19Speaker 2: very like sweet it feels like this very sweet like
- 11:22Speaker 2: kind of wave to the to the past, and in
- 11:25Speaker 2: a way.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and that that that line be the kind of
- 11:28Speaker 1: man that I could that I could read to, I
- 11:30Speaker 1: could read to. Yeah, it's just I don't know, that's
- 11:31Speaker 1: the kind of thing I was like, again, I don't
- 11:33Speaker 1: know if you meant it like cutting, but it's like,
- 11:35Speaker 1: you know, it was a bit it's in a good way.
- 11:37Speaker 1: I think it's like I would it was a bit
- 11:39Speaker 1: like infantilizing in a positive way, like you know, like
- 11:41Speaker 1: you're kind of this not the superior in the relationship.
- 11:46Speaker 1: But again, it just felt like, I don't know, it
- 11:49Speaker 1: seems like you have these very smart ways of kind
- 11:51Speaker 1: of putting people or situations in the in a particular
- 11:56Speaker 1: place that makes you sort of the person that holds
- 11:58Speaker 1: the power, and it's it's it's kind of fun.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I don't know if that's true at all. Yeah,
- 12:04Speaker 2: I mean I think on my first record, I probably will.
- 12:06Speaker 2: I don't think I was feeling like that on my
- 12:08Speaker 2: first record, I mean first records called I Can't Let Go,
- 12:10Speaker 2: And like when I listen to it now, like I'm
- 12:12Speaker 2: so proud of that that work. But it was definitely
- 12:16Speaker 2: I think also because where I came from on that
- 12:19Speaker 2: record was like, you know, I'd been putting up music
- 12:23Speaker 2: by myself, like you know, it was always just like
- 12:26Speaker 2: most of the songs at the beginning, like Brutally and
- 12:28Speaker 2: Cause Place in the world, like they didn't weren't even
- 12:29Speaker 2: recorded to like click or anything. It was so you know,
- 12:32Speaker 2: so kind of just experimenting and there was nothing that
- 12:36Speaker 2: there was no you know, there was no team, there
- 12:39Speaker 2: was no nothing.
- 12:40Speaker 3: So I got to do that for like a decade.
- 12:41Speaker 2: So in a way, I feel like not much really changed,
- 12:44Speaker 2: and in a way like when I kind of started,
- 12:49Speaker 2: you know, actually made a record, but the first record
- 12:51Speaker 2: was I kn't of got and I think it was
- 12:52Speaker 2: I think I felt at that point like I was
- 12:56Speaker 2: so frightened to cross over and add like to kind
- 13:00Speaker 2: of change course in a way or say like hey,
- 13:03Speaker 2: like here here's like an entire record, here's a body
- 13:07Speaker 2: of work. Like my expectations was so low of what
- 13:11Speaker 2: what would.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Happen, you know, when I put put that record out.
- 13:14Speaker 2: So everything that's happened in the last few years has
- 13:17Speaker 2: just been like such an insane surprise. But yeah, with this,
- 13:22Speaker 2: with this record, it's like it's such a jump in
- 13:25Speaker 2: a way because it's like, yeah, I can't let go
- 13:27Speaker 2: and now I feel like, oh, I've let go of
- 13:28Speaker 2: so much and you know what I mean, Like I'm
- 13:31Speaker 2: so I'm so much freer. I'm so like in what
- 13:34Speaker 2: I can experiment with in music and with this record,
- 13:36Speaker 2: and yeah, I feel like I've I've just gotten that.
- 13:40Speaker 2: I'm like so full of wanting to write and wanting
- 13:43Speaker 2: to just make as much stuff as possible.
- 13:45Speaker 1: That's great. What was I mean? Maybe we can go back?
- 13:48Speaker 1: What was the impetus to begin with with? Like so
- 13:51Speaker 1: brutally was the first thing you put out?
- 13:52Speaker 3: That was the first?
- 13:53Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 13:53Speaker 3: Yeah, that was like the first song?
- 13:55Speaker 1: Yeah yeah? What was what made you write? What? What
- 13:58Speaker 1: made you write that? What made you then decide I
- 14:00Speaker 1: need you know? And how did you record it? Did
- 14:02Speaker 1: you find a band? Was it? Where did you do it?
- 14:05Speaker 2: Like?
- 14:05Speaker 1: What's the story on the earlier?
- 14:06Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 14:06Speaker 2: So the first So I have this same producers now
- 14:10Speaker 2: that I've worked with for like over a decade, Jewels
- 14:13Speaker 2: upon It and Nat Finley, she is she has a
- 14:16Speaker 2: project called Finley And I was like such a massive
- 14:18Speaker 2: fan of Finley, So I went to one of their
- 14:21Speaker 2: shows and somehow like got backstage and that was how
- 14:23Speaker 2: I like got in with them. And similar thing with
- 14:26Speaker 2: my friend Blue, who actually just mixed Memoir of a
- 14:29Speaker 2: sparklem Off and we did a bunch of stuff together.
- 14:31Speaker 2: So there's been like a crew that I've really been
- 14:34Speaker 2: working with for such a long time. But Blue, yeah,
- 14:38Speaker 2: that was like round. That was round at his house.
- 14:41Speaker 2: I think it was like probably one of the first
- 14:43Speaker 2: things that we've done together.
- 14:45Speaker 1: And you've recorded the album albums at least in North Carolina.
- 14:49Speaker 2: That was the first one. Yeah, the first record I
- 14:51Speaker 2: record in North Carolina.
- 14:53Speaker 1: But the early singles but those weren't like brutally and
- 14:58Speaker 1: good looking.
- 14:59Speaker 2: No, well they were just like at my house and stuff. Yeah,
- 15:03Speaker 2: well at my house or in their living room. I
- 15:04Speaker 2: mean most of the stuff that I do with Jewels
- 15:06Speaker 2: and Nat we did like good looking, Oh my god,
- 15:09Speaker 2: my fun Joanna. We've we've worked together for such a
- 15:12Speaker 2: long time and they've they did a bunch of stuff
- 15:13Speaker 2: on the new record too. That's like always been literally
- 15:17Speaker 2: in a living room.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Wow. Yeah.
- 15:19Speaker 2: And Jewels are such an like they're just yeah, they're
- 15:22Speaker 2: a couple and they've been they've just been like the
- 15:25Speaker 2: most unbelievable partners to have for a long time. And
- 15:27Speaker 2: it's like it's cool, like we're all, you know, we
- 15:29Speaker 2: made Good Looking like eight nine years ago, and you know,
- 15:34Speaker 2: just because we were all enjoying each other so much,
- 15:37Speaker 2: and then it kind of had this it's so weird
- 15:39Speaker 2: when like with music like then it had a moment.
- 15:42Speaker 2: It's a kind of it had like a moment where
- 15:44Speaker 2: it kind of like started doing stuff like such a
- 15:47Speaker 2: long time afterwards.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Yeah, like about eight years.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Like time afterwards.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Yeah, And it's one of those weird things like when
- 15:54Speaker 2: I when I made the I Can't Go record and
- 15:57Speaker 2: had it signed it to subpop, like everyone was trying
- 16:00Speaker 2: to get me to delete good Looking and delete all
- 16:03Speaker 2: the old songs and like, oh, let's start afresh, and
- 16:05Speaker 2: I was like, no, I love those songs.
- 16:07Speaker 3: But it was such you know, it's like such a
- 16:09Speaker 3: funny thing like that.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that was like the first song that kind of
- 16:12Speaker 2: ended up like do yeah, doing doing good.
- 16:15Speaker 1: And it did get I mean it wasn't it kind
- 16:17Speaker 1: of sort of doing good around the time you put
- 16:18Speaker 1: out I Can't Let.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Go, Yeah, and it wasn't so weird, isn't it. It's
- 16:22Speaker 3: so strange.
- 16:22Speaker 1: No, it wasn't on the but did it lift anything like, Like,
- 16:25Speaker 1: so I feel like move got really popular as well
- 16:28Speaker 1: from the first album. Yeah, that was so did Good
- 16:31Speaker 1: Look did the kind of online for you know, viralness
- 16:35Speaker 1: of Good Look into that.
- 16:37Speaker 2: I definitely think it helped. Yeah, yeah, for sure. It
- 16:39Speaker 2: was very strange that that kind of happened. At the
- 16:41Speaker 2: same time it was Yeah, again I kind of felt
- 16:43Speaker 2: like it was this like way from the past coming
- 16:47Speaker 2: back around.
- 16:47Speaker 3: But that yeah, that was like a TikTok thing.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that was like that's like one of those unexplainable
- 16:52Speaker 2: things where like, yeah, no one's focused on your old
- 16:55Speaker 2: stuff that you did eight nine years ago, but TikTok
- 16:57Speaker 2: is like it just like does its own thing and
- 17:01Speaker 2: it's no yeah, no rhyme or reason, and you like
- 17:04Speaker 2: have yeah, you have no idea. You're watching all these
- 17:07Speaker 2: videos and you're kind of thinking like, oh, this has
- 17:10Speaker 2: just like come to life and has this other way
- 17:13Speaker 2: that it's breathing that you never ever would have thought of.
- 17:16Speaker 3: It's so bizarre. It's so bizarre.
- 17:18Speaker 2: But yeah, for sure that that I'm sure that I'm
- 17:22Speaker 2: sure that helped.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Like bring eyeballs onto onto the music.
- 17:27Speaker 2: And then I got to release Like I never would
- 17:30Speaker 2: have thought those old songs would have got to be
- 17:31Speaker 2: put on vinyl and like get a proper release, But
- 17:34Speaker 2: we put all of them together and we released it
- 17:36Speaker 2: on a and and I called it was an EP
- 17:39Speaker 2: called Milk Teeth, So I released that right after.
- 17:41Speaker 1: And was that on subpart to the or did you
- 17:43Speaker 1: do that yourself?
- 17:44Speaker 2: Okay? That was yeah, So those songs were I had
- 17:47Speaker 2: all of them by myself and then and then I
- 17:49Speaker 2: signed them to and we released them on a on
- 17:53Speaker 2: a vinyl note that kind and they got to have
- 17:55Speaker 2: this like moment. Yeah, they got to kind of you know, it's.
- 17:57Speaker 1: A cool from them like delete them, ye.
- 18:01Speaker 3: German, but you kind of yeah, it was one.
- 18:09Speaker 1: I'm sure you know exactly smart that you listen to
- 18:12Speaker 1: your instinct on it.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you never know. But that's always like that's
- 18:15Speaker 2: always the coore thing. It's like, yeah, that's what I
- 18:17Speaker 2: was like, Oh, I get to have it on a
- 18:18Speaker 2: vinyl and get get to have it in record stores
- 18:21Speaker 2: like that's always that's like the dream.
- 18:23Speaker 3: That's always like the best thing ever.
- 18:24Speaker 1: So the group you're saying you were a fan of
- 18:26Speaker 1: it was Finley.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Yeah, so Finley is Natalie and she yeah, Juels used
- 18:32Speaker 2: to play with her too, and and I was a
- 18:34Speaker 2: big fan of them. I remember it was kind of Yeah,
- 18:37Speaker 2: it was around the time that like Jake Bug was around.
- 18:39Speaker 2: I think I think I'd been to like one of
- 18:42Speaker 2: his shows that same week and we met. Yeah, we
- 18:44Speaker 2: just met each other backstage and and I literally had
- 18:47Speaker 2: done as you know, i'd done, like I kind of
- 18:50Speaker 2: I was always like finding people to work with, even
- 18:54Speaker 2: though I had like sort of no sort of like
- 18:57Speaker 2: music industry connections in a way, but that you know,
- 18:59Speaker 2: you just find, you just find people to work with.
- 19:01Speaker 2: So yeah, I remember we have we have like video
- 19:03Speaker 2: footage of it where like little babies, like eighteen year
- 19:06Speaker 2: old babies and that. Yeah, we started, Yeah, we started
- 19:11Speaker 2: making those songs. And we would go on like little
- 19:14Speaker 2: trips and go and stay at his mom's house and
- 19:17Speaker 2: in Brittany and France, and and yes, it's been this
- 19:21Speaker 2: like really long, like collaborative, fruitful experience.
- 19:25Speaker 1: So you had some of the songs already when you
- 19:28Speaker 1: went backstage and met them, you had some of the No.
- 19:31Speaker 2: I don't think I had any of the ones that
- 19:33Speaker 2: we we put out, No, we.
- 19:35Speaker 3: Like I know, I know which song.
- 19:36Speaker 1: I know we had some stuff.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, well.
- 19:39Speaker 2: I'd I definitely like made music before, but we we
- 19:42Speaker 2: kind of like went in there with a lot of
- 19:43Speaker 2: like like Jules has such you know, the production on
- 19:46Speaker 2: good Looking and Joanna and Oh my God and my
- 19:48Speaker 2: fun he has such a he just I don't know,
- 19:51Speaker 2: I feel like he has something that no one else does,
- 19:53Speaker 2: like both of them together, I really I think there's
- 19:57Speaker 2: that that whole kind of like that it's it's yeah,
- 20:01Speaker 2: it's it's otherworldly what I think they're able to do.
- 20:05Speaker 2: And we yeah, we've just like had this really special relationship.
- 20:09Speaker 1: We'll be right back after this break with more from
- 20:12Speaker 1: Suki Waterhouse. We're back with Suki Waterhouse. Before you started
- 20:21Speaker 1: writing songs or what was your like, what was like
- 20:24Speaker 1: were you what was your relationship with music? You know?
- 20:27Speaker 1: I mean you were at the time, you had a job,
- 20:29Speaker 1: you were a model, you know, and you were acting.
- 20:32Speaker 1: I think also by that point well into acting, so what.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Well, maybe not when I was like that age.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Actually, I think I think I started making music probably, yeah,
- 20:41Speaker 2: I was, I was modeling and stuff. But yeah, I
- 20:44Speaker 2: started making music kind of a long time before. I
- 20:47Speaker 2: guess like I was, I was a model, but I
- 20:50Speaker 2: was like not like a very successful model.
- 20:53Speaker 3: No, no, no, I really wasn't that really No. I
- 20:56Speaker 3: was like like you.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Know with my age to z go into like thirty
- 21:00Speaker 2: castings a day and like you know, probably crying in
- 21:03Speaker 2: like in a toilet most days. It wasn't It wasn't
- 21:07Speaker 2: like a particular you know, it was very It was
- 21:09Speaker 2: like very much at the beginning. So yeah, that was
- 21:12Speaker 2: that was like always the yeah, writing and making music.
- 21:16Speaker 2: It was like I wanted, Yeah, I really like wanted
- 21:19Speaker 2: I wanted that life, but and I wanted to be
- 21:22Speaker 2: in music always first actually, but I don't know. Sometimes
- 21:25Speaker 2: like life kind of like takes you in different directions
- 21:28Speaker 2: and like that and in and in so many ways,
- 21:31Speaker 2: in fact, in every way, like I'm I'm I'm so
- 21:34Speaker 2: grateful that it almost that it did take so long,
- 21:37Speaker 2: and that it got so long, so much time to
- 21:41Speaker 2: just work on it and discover what I like and
- 21:44Speaker 2: and like mess up a bunch of times and do
- 21:46Speaker 2: like hundreds of sessions of you know, like not like no, no,
- 21:51Speaker 2: like kind of it's it's all about like taste and
- 21:54Speaker 2: finding out what you do and don't like and becoming
- 21:56Speaker 2: very particular about it. Like that is what it is
- 21:59Speaker 2: essentially like building your artists world.
- 22:03Speaker 3: So yeah, I don't know.
- 22:04Speaker 2: I wouldn't if I was like if I had just
- 22:07Speaker 2: been having to like make record ten and put everything
- 22:10Speaker 2: out out, then yeah, I don't know.
- 22:12Speaker 3: I wouldn't take it back for anything.
- 22:13Speaker 2: And also it's like so much my music is about
- 22:16Speaker 2: my life, and you know, I like got to kind
- 22:19Speaker 2: of like be on that girl roller coaster of my
- 22:22Speaker 2: twenties and like have like insane experiences and be crazy,
- 22:26Speaker 2: and that is how I have like material. I feel
- 22:30Speaker 2: like I probably did enough of my twenties to like
- 22:32Speaker 2: sustain the material for like a while, because now it's
- 22:35Speaker 2: like so much like it's so much like not as a.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Crazy it's a little different now.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Yeah exactly, Yeah, yeah, yeah I understand that.
- 22:45Speaker 2: I mean it's still you know, it's still it's never
- 22:47Speaker 2: gonna It's not like just having a kid makes everything.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Oh like you know, it's not like that at all.
- 22:51Speaker 2: You actually have a lot, you know, like like life
- 22:54Speaker 2: goes on in this.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Ya, but it feels less. I don't know.
- 22:57Speaker 3: For some reason as insane.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Yes, it's a little mundane. It's crazier in a weird way.
- 23:02Speaker 3: But it's to have two kids.
- 23:03Speaker 1: You two girls. Yeah, they just third grade in kindergarten.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Ring.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Yeah, it's the most it's a cool thing.
- 23:12Speaker 1: It's wild.
- 23:12Speaker 2: I love like just being a parent now and just
- 23:15Speaker 2: that connection you have to other parents, like you know
- 23:17Speaker 2: you just like I was backstage at a show that
- 23:20Speaker 2: I was just doing in London, and I'm just like
- 23:23Speaker 2: kind of walking and talking with one of the guys backstage,
- 23:25Speaker 2: and he's pulling out pictures and being like.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Look at this video. Look how smart she is, like loo,
- 23:29Speaker 3: and You're like, well, look at this one. Look at
- 23:31Speaker 3: what she's doing.
- 23:31Speaker 1: You know.
- 23:31Speaker 2: It's like that excitement that you that it feels like
- 23:35Speaker 2: unlocking a key to this like little secret like love club.
- 23:38Speaker 1: No, it is, and it's funny. As long as you're there,
- 23:40Speaker 1: it feels great. But you know, then sometimes I go
- 23:42Speaker 1: out into the world and I kind of always think
- 23:44Speaker 1: about this Anthony board. I don't know the exact quote,
- 23:47Speaker 1: but as we had in an interview that Anthony Bourdain
- 23:49Speaker 1: did obviously a while ago, and he was just like,
- 23:51Speaker 1: you know, once you're like a dad, like you know,
- 23:52Speaker 1: you try to break out like the Ramon shirt and
- 23:54Speaker 1: then get it, go out and be in the mix,
- 23:57Speaker 1: but after about like thirty minutes, you're like, I gotta
- 23:59Speaker 1: throw this shit away, okay, like and I don't know.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Like I still feel quite like I don't know, I
- 24:04Speaker 2: feel like myself, and I'm actually surprised by like how I.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Don't know any tips. Then I need I need advice on.
- 24:13Speaker 3: It, but I don't know.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Maybe I didn't, But then I guess, like it's not
- 24:16Speaker 2: like I guess before as well. I certainly like haven't
- 24:20Speaker 2: been wanting to go and be like doing crazy stuff,
- 24:25Speaker 2: but like you know what I mean, yeah exactly, So
- 24:28Speaker 2: it's not like it's been this like hugely drastic thing.
- 24:31Speaker 2: And it's also like the best excuse ever for like
- 24:33Speaker 2: streamlining your life a little bit, not like running around
- 24:36Speaker 2: as much like being quite intentional. Yeah, it kind of
- 24:39Speaker 2: helps you have that bedrock because you can't you can't,
- 24:43Speaker 2: like you know, I can't just like take off and
- 24:46Speaker 2: go everywhere and do it. So it's I have to
- 24:49Speaker 2: be like much more intentional, which I think actually is
- 24:51Speaker 2: something that is like not only good for me. And
- 24:54Speaker 2: I have this like grounding this thing that keeps me
- 24:57Speaker 2: very like grounded now, but it also keeps me like
- 25:00Speaker 2: grounded to place more, which is something that after a
- 25:03Speaker 2: long time of moving so much, I'm actually really happy for.
- 25:08Speaker 1: So how do you how are you going to work
- 25:12Speaker 1: a week?
- 25:12Speaker 3: Basically, she's going with me?
- 25:15Speaker 1: And how old is she?
- 25:16Speaker 3: No, she's almost six months.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's kind of probably the best time, not
- 25:21Speaker 2: because like before, she's going to just be figuring out
- 25:24Speaker 2: in a couple of months how to like crawl and
- 25:26Speaker 2: and walk.
- 25:27Speaker 3: But we'll see, we'll see.
- 25:29Speaker 2: I'm like just throwing myself into being like, you know,
- 25:32Speaker 2: she's got to come with me, so you just well,
- 25:35Speaker 2: you know, a bus will be fun for her. I
- 25:37Speaker 2: think there'll be so many people around, like she'll she's
- 25:41Speaker 2: quite you know, she's social. She's like wants to be
- 25:44Speaker 2: looking at everything and having fun. I'm going to be saying,
- 25:46Speaker 2: just ask me in a few months and we're going
- 25:48Speaker 2: to be like.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Pretty fun experience for the baby and they don't really
- 25:53Speaker 1: know what's going on. Everything's new and different exactly, you know, stimulating.
- 25:59Speaker 3: It will be stimulating exactly.
- 26:01Speaker 2: She's not going to be She's not you know, it's yeah,
- 26:04Speaker 2: she just came to London with me on her first
- 26:07Speaker 2: that was like a first like long flight and she.
- 26:09Speaker 1: She was born here.
- 26:10Speaker 3: Yeah, she was born here.
- 26:11Speaker 1: How do you feel about does that? Does that feel?
- 26:14Speaker 1: How do you feel about bridge?
- 26:15Speaker 2: She has like a little American passible now, which is
- 26:17Speaker 2: pretty cool. It's just really strange actually to see I'm like,
- 26:20Speaker 2: oh my god, you like you were born in la Wow.
- 26:25Speaker 2: But it was it was very special to bring her
- 26:27Speaker 2: back actually and kind of go for it. I went
- 26:29Speaker 2: early and had, you know, all the family. We went
- 26:32Speaker 2: to the countryside, she went, saw the Tower of London,
- 26:34Speaker 2: like I just like, yeah, we went everywhere and it
- 26:38Speaker 2: was beautiful. Yeah, to have all the family, it is,
- 26:41Speaker 2: it is.
- 26:41Speaker 3: Yeah. I did like pull up my heartstrings a.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Little bit, being like, oh, everyone's there's so many people
- 26:46Speaker 2: in England or London that like love her and are
- 26:49Speaker 2: obsessed with her and like so much family. So it
- 26:53Speaker 2: makes Yeah, it makes you think you're like.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Ah, yeah, where do you want to be?
- 26:59Speaker 2: Yeah? But that's the thing is like you can't I
- 27:02Speaker 2: think the I can't plan. You can't really like plan,
- 27:06Speaker 2: Like both me and my partner we can't. We can't
- 27:08Speaker 2: really plan that much. But there might you know, there'll
- 27:10Speaker 2: be like nice stretches of time when maybe like a
- 27:12Speaker 2: movie will be shot there or something, or you kind
- 27:15Speaker 2: of you plan as much as you can to be home,
- 27:18Speaker 2: but there's an element of there is an element of like,
- 27:21Speaker 2: we don't really know what things look like all the time,
- 27:25Speaker 2: and things change, so you kind of you kind of
- 27:27Speaker 2: got to be pretty go with the flow.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's that's that's I mean, yeah, that's a
- 27:32Speaker 1: wild until.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Like school starts, and then that will be a different thing, right,
- 27:36Speaker 2: Like it's I feel like you get a couple of years.
- 27:38Speaker 3: At the beginning where maybe yeah, exactly.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Where you can move them around a little bit more
- 27:42Speaker 2: and then and then yeah, the in the future, it
- 27:44Speaker 2: won't it won't be like that.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Are you playing Are you playing your daughter music?
- 27:49Speaker 2: Yes, I'm playing her a lot of music. Yeah, I
- 27:51Speaker 2: feel like disco. She's into Fleetwood Mac.
- 27:58Speaker 3: She likes.
- 27:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I play her like Leila by Eric Clapton because
- 28:01Speaker 2: my mum used to play that for me a lot.
- 28:04Speaker 2: And then I'm and then I'm doing like Baby Motz
- 28:06Speaker 2: and stuff because I'm just like trying.
- 28:07Speaker 3: To you know, You're like you're you're like, oh, well,
- 28:10Speaker 3: if you listen to.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Yeah, which probably will be exactly. I don't know if
- 28:18Speaker 1: we try.
- 28:19Speaker 2: And then like playing piano actually like my, yeah, my,
- 28:22Speaker 2: like we both play piano, so we kind of like
- 28:25Speaker 2: that's actually really sweet to see to see her watch that.
- 28:27Speaker 2: I'm upset. I'm like, she has to one thing I'm
- 28:30Speaker 2: like going to be crazy about. I really want her
- 28:32Speaker 2: to be able to play guitar and piano, and like,
- 28:34Speaker 2: have you do your kids play instruments?
- 28:36Speaker 1: Yeah, And I've gone through periods of pushing them to
- 28:40Speaker 1: not pushing them, but being you know, like like what's
- 28:42Speaker 1: probably good.
- 28:42Speaker 3: Discipline, Come on, you need to play piano.
- 28:47Speaker 1: And then and then but the times when like I
- 28:49Speaker 1: pull them ato lessons and I don't, I don't talk
- 28:51Speaker 1: about it much. Then I noticed, like, oh, I put
- 28:53Speaker 1: my head on the corner. She's playing guitar or she's
- 28:57Speaker 1: playing like that's cool. You know.
- 28:58Speaker 3: So you probably can't exactly, you can't even force it.
- 29:02Speaker 1: You just got to play the music. You got to
- 29:03Speaker 1: play a lot of music, so you get a lot
- 29:04Speaker 1: of exposure and build their tastes in the palette and
- 29:08Speaker 1: then and then hope for the best.
- 29:10Speaker 2: That's the best thing. Yeah, I feel like my parents
- 29:12Speaker 2: didn't actually do that for me too much. We got
- 29:14Speaker 2: like Tracy Chapman, and my dad was very into like
- 29:17Speaker 2: Bruce Springsteen, but like I think there were four of
- 29:21Speaker 2: us and my mom would just be like like the
- 29:23Speaker 2: noise of just all of us at a certain point,
- 29:27Speaker 2: like they weren't like super educational, but I don't know,
- 29:30Speaker 2: in a weird way. That also made me really hungry
- 29:34Speaker 2: to go and find find out about music.
- 29:36Speaker 1: And I kind of you're sibling similar, do they have
- 29:38Speaker 1: those similar?
- 29:39Speaker 2: Yeah, my sister's actually, my sister's really good at He
- 29:43Speaker 2: was kind of sim I kind of like we all
- 29:45Speaker 2: like pass it around, and I guess I passed it
- 29:47Speaker 2: down quite a lot. But I was like that was
- 29:49Speaker 2: like my religion as finding out about everything when I
- 29:52Speaker 2: was a teenager and you know, yeah, London when you're
- 29:57Speaker 2: eighteen and kind of it was incredible, like I remember, yeah,
- 30:03Speaker 2: just like getting out into night life and that was
- 30:06Speaker 2: like a time where you could go to a bar
- 30:07Speaker 2: and Camden and like the Baby Shambles will be around,
- 30:10Speaker 2: an Amy Winehouse would be walking around and I'd be
- 30:12Speaker 2: like a you know, teenager in London and.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Taking all of that in.
- 30:16Speaker 2: It's like there there were so many good like rock
- 30:19Speaker 2: band shows happening that was like great, it was a
- 30:21Speaker 2: great time for like indie music.
- 30:24Speaker 3: It was great.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Yeah, So there was that I kind of yeah, I
- 30:28Speaker 2: had like I had the whole of London at my
- 30:30Speaker 2: fingertips to kind of soak into.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Yeah, from eighteen to sort of now through the making
- 30:36Speaker 1: of the new album. How is your taste sort of
- 30:39Speaker 1: changed evolved over over that course of time, if you can,
- 30:42Speaker 1: If you can, I.
- 30:44Speaker 3: Mean, there's not I don't know.
- 30:45Speaker 2: I have like a pretty wide range of things that
- 30:47Speaker 2: I love, Like you know, like there's it's I think,
- 30:52Speaker 2: I think, I think it's like different to what I mean,
- 30:55Speaker 2: there's always like things in your head as well, right,
- 30:58Speaker 2: it's I get the I think when I first when
- 31:00Speaker 2: I put my first record out, I was I think,
- 31:04Speaker 2: like the what I wanted to make at the beginning
- 31:07Speaker 2: especially was like I think I was really struck by
- 31:12Speaker 2: lou Duian.
- 31:12Speaker 3: You know who she is.
- 31:13Speaker 2: She's Jane Berkan's daughter, and she she made this record
- 31:19Speaker 2: and I guess like maybe I resonated with it. She'd
- 31:21Speaker 2: been an actress and and fashion and all this kind
- 31:23Speaker 2: of stuff, and like I felt this like I guess
- 31:26Speaker 2: like that was someone I looked at and I went like, oh,
- 31:28Speaker 2: you've made like this amazing record and there was a
- 31:31Speaker 2: song called I See You and that that kind of
- 31:35Speaker 2: music like I wanted to I don't know, I like
- 31:38Speaker 2: when I was, you know, I felt, yeah, I felt
- 31:40Speaker 2: like I wanted to make music like Marry and Faithful
- 31:43Speaker 2: and like cat Power and Velvet Underground and like that
- 31:46Speaker 2: was you know, that was and I and I guess
- 31:49Speaker 2: I really didn't. I was like, oh, I know, I
- 31:51Speaker 2: don't want to sound like I think if i'd like
- 31:53Speaker 2: come out with something like really like you know, I
- 31:56Speaker 2: didn't want anything like pop or and you know, nothing
- 31:59Speaker 2: like that. And you know when you go into a studio,
- 32:01Speaker 2: I want like real instruments and like and like brutally
- 32:04Speaker 2: it's like I wanted to do. I wanted to literally
- 32:07Speaker 2: just be in a room with the like with candles
- 32:10Speaker 2: on and not do something to click and and just
- 32:13Speaker 2: have something that was like very much like a feeling
- 32:18Speaker 2: and not have Yeah, I think I was like kind
- 32:19Speaker 2: of allergic to like things feeling feeling like produced and
- 32:23Speaker 2: production like that. But now I'm not. Now I'm like,
- 32:26Speaker 2: you know, more.
- 32:27Speaker 3: Up into it.
- 32:27Speaker 2: But it was also where I was in my head
- 32:29Speaker 2: where I was like, I can't, I don't. It wouldn't
- 32:31Speaker 2: it wouldn't feel right to like come out of the
- 32:33Speaker 2: gate having come from like these different industries as well,
- 32:38Speaker 2: to suddenly.
- 32:39Speaker 3: Be like I'm a pop star.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Like that was like my like I was like, oh,
- 32:42Speaker 2: that would just never, that wouldn't work and it's not
- 32:45Speaker 2: it would like never be aligned with what I liked.
- 32:48Speaker 3: But it was also my.
- 32:48Speaker 2: Tastes and what I really liked and everything, and you know,
- 32:51Speaker 2: everything was quite like I guess yeah at that point,
- 32:56Speaker 2: like and I was I'm was more new to songwriting,
- 33:00Speaker 2: I guess, but like that everything was everything's quite like
- 33:04Speaker 2: I don't know. I listened to it now and I'm like,
- 33:05Speaker 2: but it was also my headspace. That's like everything's quite
- 33:08Speaker 2: like there's like a dreariness to things, and I never
- 33:11Speaker 2: wanted to like jump up or go big on something.
- 33:13Speaker 2: It was like all like just like gott to be
- 33:16Speaker 2: very like you know, like and I get and I
- 33:19Speaker 2: get and that It's all about what your head space
- 33:21Speaker 2: is in when you're making a record, right, like what
- 33:23Speaker 2: you think you're like, what you allow where you like
- 33:27Speaker 2: allow yourself to go and like where you are.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Always want to put on Knocking on Heaven's Door. After
- 33:35Speaker 1: just had that kind of open serial.
- 33:39Speaker 2: I was with Brad Cook and I was like really
- 33:41Speaker 2: obsessed with Brad Cook and he'd produced for Waxahatchie and
- 33:45Speaker 2: there was a song there was a song called His
- 33:47Speaker 2: Golden Messenger, I Buy his Golden Messenger called Cat's Eized Blue,
- 33:52Speaker 2: and like that was like one of the times where
- 33:54Speaker 2: I was like, Oh, that that song will fit this
- 33:59Speaker 2: this that kind of like connects to this world. And
- 34:02Speaker 2: and I was like, Oh, he'll never He'll never want
- 34:04Speaker 2: to like work with me or like he's he does
- 34:06Speaker 2: what I just I didn't have anything going with me.
- 34:08Speaker 2: I had no label, nothing like and it's like he's
- 34:10Speaker 2: would be like who are you? And luckily we had
- 34:13Speaker 2: one friend in common, Dave Sitek from TV on the radio,
- 34:16Speaker 2: who had been like working with for years and he's
- 34:19Speaker 2: been like a buddy of.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Have you made musical with Dave?
- 34:21Speaker 3: Yeah, me and I know we've never released any of it.
- 34:23Speaker 2: No. Me and Dave were like went to Texas one
- 34:28Speaker 2: to like Reno one year and and made like you know,
- 34:31Speaker 2: just like had made like bonfires and like hung out
- 34:35Speaker 2: for like two weeks and and we just like talked
- 34:38Speaker 2: so much and made so much music. But yeah, so
- 34:41Speaker 2: I've not yeah known him for years and and Brad
- 34:43Speaker 2: had produced one of his Neverly Boys albums. So so yeah,
- 34:46Speaker 2: I kind of I think like I got I got
- 34:48Speaker 2: Dave to you know, say, like, oh, she's she's like
- 34:51Speaker 2: okay or whatever, she's like not she should you should work.
- 34:54Speaker 3: You should do it with her. It will be cool.
- 34:56Speaker 1: He gave you the stamp of a product.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, and we did and we did a
- 35:00Speaker 2: bunch of stuff. We did like some production together as
- 35:02Speaker 2: well at justin Vernham Studio in Wisconsin for this Reforto.
- 35:07Speaker 3: Which was pretty cool. Yeah.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Is he around?
- 35:09Speaker 3: No, he wasn't around.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Now. We were actually meant to a session but he
- 35:13Speaker 2: he canceled on me.
- 35:14Speaker 3: So he was busy, he was sick. But we Yeah,
- 35:19Speaker 3: I would love to work with him.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Wow. So what So how much how many songs did
- 35:24Speaker 1: you have you made with Dave?
- 35:26Speaker 3: We have a Yeah, we have a bunch. I don't
- 35:28Speaker 3: know why.
- 35:29Speaker 2: I don't know why we haven't like managed to finish
- 35:31Speaker 2: them actually or like we just I don't know, we've
- 35:33Speaker 2: kind of like gone out. But he was sort of
- 35:35Speaker 2: my gateway into I don't know, just like but Dave's
- 35:40Speaker 2: like done.
- 35:40Speaker 3: I mean, he's done so many cool things.
- 35:43Speaker 2: He's like you know the yeah, yeah, yeahs. He did
- 35:45Speaker 2: a lot of that early stuff. So like, yeah, I
- 35:49Speaker 2: would always go around to his house and and and
- 35:52Speaker 2: like sit with him, and he's he has like it's
- 35:55Speaker 2: really like perspective, and you know.
- 35:59Speaker 3: He's he's been through. He's been through it. He's been
- 36:02Speaker 3: through like the music industry.
- 36:03Speaker 2: He's he kind of he has a great like bullshit
- 36:07Speaker 2: what's called barometer. Yeah, and and yeah, he like taught
- 36:11Speaker 2: me a lot actually and kind of like invested a
- 36:13Speaker 2: lot of time in me. But I think I met
- 36:17Speaker 2: him from a cold email. I would just cold email people.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Yeah it's really.
- 36:22Speaker 3: Good, that's like, yeah, I did. And then I did that.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Also, there was a bunch of stuff like that before,
- 36:28Speaker 2: you know, before I had like a team or anything.
- 36:30Speaker 2: I called emailed Belle and Sebastian and I went and
- 36:35Speaker 2: made a song with them, which I put out recently,
- 36:38Speaker 2: because once I got like a manager and team and
- 36:40Speaker 2: I sounded kind of like like a year in I
- 36:43Speaker 2: was like, oh and I have the song with Bell
- 36:44Speaker 2: and Sebastian. They were like what, like, what do you mean,
- 36:46Speaker 2: like you have.
- 36:47Speaker 3: A song with them? Like yeah, yeah, like went over there.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Once and we hung out for a weekend and made
- 36:51Speaker 2: the song. So I ended up putting that song out
- 36:54Speaker 2: called every Day's a Lesson in Humility. But that was
- 36:56Speaker 2: like such a that was a song that we'd recorded
- 36:58Speaker 2: like such a long time ago. It's funny, Yeah, it's funny.
- 37:03Speaker 2: That was like, yeah, I guess I was like trying.
- 37:05Speaker 2: I guess I was always trying to you know, that's
- 37:08Speaker 2: just what you do. You're trying to just get in
- 37:11Speaker 2: the room and be with people that are inspiring and yeah,
- 37:15Speaker 2: because you just never know what's going to happen, of.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Course, no, especially with people, especially those you know, those
- 37:21Speaker 1: people those that's pretty yeah.
- 37:23Speaker 2: Yeah you want to like yeah yeah yeah, and things
- 37:25Speaker 2: can Yeah. You just you're just it's like building a
- 37:28Speaker 2: tap stream and and finding those people that yeah, because
- 37:32Speaker 2: like you're nothing, you're you're you know, you're really nothing
- 37:34Speaker 2: without like that like the yeah, the amazing collaborators that
- 37:40Speaker 2: you have and the people that you that you want
- 37:42Speaker 2: to like, you know that you that you want to
- 37:45Speaker 2: hang out with for like weeks on end and ably
- 37:48Speaker 2: and have like a and try and like make something
- 37:50Speaker 2: together that you guys are super proud of.
- 37:54Speaker 1: After this last break, we'll be back with the rest
- 37:55Speaker 1: of my conversation with Suki Waterhouse. Here's the rest of
- 38:03Speaker 1: my conversation with Suki Waterhouse. Do you know I'm gonna
- 38:07Speaker 1: put you on the spot. Do you know if you've
- 38:08Speaker 1: been on the radio? Is getting back together?
- 38:10Speaker 3: I don't know. Actually, no, they are, Yeah, probably I
- 38:14Speaker 3: think so. Maybe I don't know. I don't know that. Yeah,
- 38:18Speaker 3: were getting back together? Right?
- 38:19Speaker 1: Are you going to go see them?
- 38:20Speaker 3: Oh my god, I have to.
- 38:22Speaker 2: I might. I just did a cover of Fairs the
- 38:24Speaker 2: other day at All Point Season in London.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Yeah, what you do?
- 38:28Speaker 3: I did Don't Look Back and Anger, which was so fun.
- 38:31Speaker 3: It was so fun.
- 38:32Speaker 2: But like the crowd in London just like, oh my god,
- 38:35Speaker 2: it's just like amazing how everybody, especially in England, it
- 38:40Speaker 2: just it just like does something to people where that
- 38:44Speaker 2: everyone's just their music.
- 38:45Speaker 3: Yeah, it does.
- 38:46Speaker 2: I like, I feel like it's going to be just
- 38:48Speaker 2: like the best. It's going to be like us kind
- 38:50Speaker 2: of winning like a huge football game or something.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Winning a World Cup or something. Maybe not quite that.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Long, not quite the level, but I think it's going
- 39:00Speaker 2: to really do a lot for like making everyone really
- 39:02Speaker 2: happy and like uniting the country, and it's going to
- 39:04Speaker 2: be I can't wait.
- 39:07Speaker 3: Yes you are.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Also you were that that festival was a few days
- 39:10Speaker 1: after you open for Taylor Swift Too, right in Wembley.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Yeah, that was on the Saturday and then an All
- 39:15Speaker 2: Point Seas was on the Sunday.
- 39:16Speaker 3: So that was like really fun weekend.
- 39:17Speaker 1: What a wild weekend.
- 39:19Speaker 3: It was so good.
- 39:19Speaker 1: What a crazy plane Wembley would just like that's that's insane.
- 39:23Speaker 1: I think that's probably you know, people always talk about
- 39:25Speaker 1: Madison Square Garden and there's different venues, but I don't
- 39:29Speaker 1: know just I think that's because a queen. There's some
- 39:32Speaker 1: great like Cross of Stills and Nash stuff those. I mean,
- 39:34Speaker 1: just Wembley to me just feels like insane.
- 39:36Speaker 3: You know, it's crazy. Yeah, it was insane.
- 39:39Speaker 1: And it's Taylor Swift too on top of it.
- 39:41Speaker 3: And like I've been to Wembley.
- 39:43Speaker 2: I think I think it was like twenty seventeen or something,
- 39:46Speaker 2: but I went to go and see a reputation there
- 39:48Speaker 2: like a couple of years ago, and it was just
- 39:49Speaker 2: like shaking my ass, like ah, you know, with my
- 39:52Speaker 2: sisters and my friends, and I just yeah, you just
- 39:55Speaker 2: couldn't have told me that that was ever going to happen, Like,
- 39:57Speaker 2: I just it's just like what, it's nuts. And they
- 40:01Speaker 2: have these like sliding doors and you walk out there
- 40:05Speaker 2: and I kind of just you know, it's very strange
- 40:08Speaker 2: to like the most amount of people I've probably ever
- 40:10Speaker 2: played to is like maybe like Lolapalooza in Chile and Argentina,
- 40:16Speaker 2: like maybe like maybe like ten thousand or something, and
- 40:20Speaker 2: then you're in a stadium that's like got like about yeah,
- 40:24Speaker 2: I think it's like ninety two thousand or something, and.
- 40:27Speaker 3: There's yeah, yeah, it's crazy.
- 40:30Speaker 1: It was like.
- 40:32Speaker 2: The best thing about that was also just yeah, not
- 40:35Speaker 2: only I mean like it's like going to one of
- 40:39Speaker 2: your favorite shows ever.
- 40:40Speaker 3: Like I've been to the Ariostool before. It's like such
- 40:42Speaker 3: a fun night.
- 40:43Speaker 1: So did you go to the other one blee shows
- 40:45Speaker 1: like earlier years?
- 40:45Speaker 2: I went to UH, I went to New York. I
- 40:48Speaker 2: went to New York last year and it was so fun,
- 40:51Speaker 2: Like it's so it's insane. And then also just getting
- 40:53Speaker 2: to do that like with my family as well, Like
- 40:58Speaker 2: my dad had kept being like because it hadn't announced
- 41:00Speaker 2: for ages and I told him about it and he
- 41:02Speaker 2: was like, I guess it's not happening. Then I guess,
- 41:06Speaker 2: I guess it's I guess didn't have your right.
- 41:08Speaker 3: It's sorry for you. And I'm like, no doubt it
- 41:10Speaker 3: is happening.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Like you know, they don't believe anything until it's like
- 41:12Speaker 2: in until like their friends can see it or whatever,
- 41:15Speaker 2: and like in like the press and I'm like the dad,
- 41:18Speaker 2: I swear Something's like not yeah, what that would have
- 41:20Speaker 2: been fun. I'm like, no, no, no, We're going to go
- 41:22Speaker 2: to Wembley like it's it is.
- 41:24Speaker 3: It is a thing.
- 41:24Speaker 2: And then he was just kind of like, you know,
- 41:27Speaker 2: it was like he couldn't he couldn't believe it. So
- 41:29Speaker 2: like doing that thing, having that moment in your hometown
- 41:32Speaker 2: with your family, with all your friends around, was like
- 41:37Speaker 2: one of the coolest days of my life.
- 41:39Speaker 1: Yeah, it's really wild. That is really it's really wild.
- 41:41Speaker 1: Fun Wan circle back quick. You mentioned that you played
- 41:45Speaker 1: piano and your partner played piano. Did you learn how
- 41:48Speaker 1: to play piano through Daisy Jones?
- 41:50Speaker 2: In this I mean, I like played a little bit before,
- 41:52Speaker 2: but there's nothing like learning. Yes, being and like having
- 41:55Speaker 2: a teacher for three hours a day and like actually,
- 41:57Speaker 2: you know, really getting into it and doing like all
- 42:00Speaker 2: the crazy shit that we had to.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Do, which is what you had for We learned, like.
- 42:04Speaker 2: You know, we learned like so many songs, and there
- 42:06Speaker 2: was like a Beethoven thing at some point that they
- 42:09Speaker 2: were like this is going to be You're going to
- 42:11Speaker 2: be filmed doing like this big like piano moment, and
- 42:14Speaker 2: I learned it for literally, I'm not joking, like yeah,
- 42:19Speaker 2: like every day obsessively, obsessively obsessively and then they're like,
- 42:24Speaker 2: oh no, we're actually not going to do that. So
- 42:26Speaker 2: but it was like amazing because I got you know,
- 42:28Speaker 2: I got to like do that and it was and
- 42:31Speaker 2: also that like year coming up to that we had
- 42:34Speaker 2: before that was COVID and everything.
- 42:35Speaker 3: It was like, thank god.
- 42:36Speaker 2: It was like the best thing ever to literally just
- 42:40Speaker 2: do zoom practice.
- 42:41Speaker 3: For like three hours a day.
- 42:42Speaker 2: I was like obsessed and it was so great for
- 42:45Speaker 2: me and writing as well to get so much better
- 42:48Speaker 2: at it. Yeah, but yeah, I'm always like yeah, I'm
- 42:51Speaker 2: always doing I'm still and now I'm like doing it
- 42:54Speaker 2: all the time. I still have piano lessons and it's
- 42:57Speaker 2: just good. It's just like the best thing ever to
- 43:00Speaker 2: make you. It makes you. It's just like so therapeutic
- 43:03Speaker 2: as well.
- 43:04Speaker 1: Absolutely, do you do you primarily write on piano or
- 43:08Speaker 1: guitar or do you not on an instrument? How are you?
- 43:10Speaker 2: I probably right on usually I'm always right. I'm kind
- 43:13Speaker 2: of like start going on guitar and like I'm okay
- 43:16Speaker 2: at guitar, Like I can get through. But you don't, Yeah,
- 43:19Speaker 2: you don't actually like I'll do piano or guitar. But
- 43:23Speaker 2: I never like I never think you need you don't
- 43:26Speaker 2: actually need to be like prolific in a lot of ways.
- 43:29Speaker 3: It's kind of.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Yeah, like some I think it's more it's like more
- 43:34Speaker 2: the practice of just going with like going and actually
- 43:39Speaker 2: sitting and like forcing yourself and being like you're not
- 43:42Speaker 2: you're not allowed to leave, and you've got to like
- 43:45Speaker 2: you've got to actually be present. And that's the way
- 43:49Speaker 2: that I find out like what's truly on my mind?
- 43:51Speaker 3: Because I don't know.
- 43:52Speaker 2: It's very it's very easy to It's yeah, it's like
- 43:56Speaker 2: a practice doing that because it's very easy to like
- 43:58Speaker 2: not even know what you're feeling or what you're you know,
- 44:01Speaker 2: when your life is just like going, is.
- 44:04Speaker 1: It an outlet? For you, like, do you do that
- 44:06Speaker 1: in other words, do you do that as a way
- 44:08Speaker 1: of to just sort of decompress or is it with
- 44:11Speaker 1: the purpose of, like I want to write an album
- 44:13Speaker 1: or write some songs and see what comes out.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Or no, because I don't think I'm ever like like
- 44:18Speaker 2: i've I'm like, you know, in a way, I'm not.
- 44:22Speaker 2: I don't really work where I'm like, I'm going to
- 44:24Speaker 2: write an album, so I'm going to go and you know,
- 44:27Speaker 2: I've got two months to make a record and that's
- 44:29Speaker 2: where I'm going to write all the songs.
- 44:31Speaker 3: So that sounds like absolute hell to me.
- 44:33Speaker 2: It's like not what I would whatever want to be doing.
- 44:36Speaker 2: I want to be like hit by something and be
- 44:39Speaker 2: sparked by it and then go and write the song.
- 44:41Speaker 2: And then if I like that, if that song is
- 44:44Speaker 2: still coming back to me and it's still and I
- 44:47Speaker 2: haven't like you know, if it's if it makes it
- 44:49Speaker 2: at the end and I still am in love with it,
- 44:52Speaker 2: then it you know, it's like you can, yeah, it
- 44:56Speaker 2: has to like stay in my heart, I guess for
- 44:58Speaker 2: a long time, but yeah I can't. I kind of
- 45:00Speaker 2: am always in that writing mode in a way because yeah,
- 45:07Speaker 2: not that I have like a song that I want
- 45:08Speaker 2: to write about every day, like at all.
- 45:10Speaker 1: But but you force yourself to sort of sit down
- 45:12Speaker 1: quietly and yeah, work out some stuff and maybe someone
- 45:16Speaker 1: comes out or not.
- 45:17Speaker 3: It sounds like right, yeah, yeah, it's.
- 45:20Speaker 1: Some dedicated songwriting time.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's like that frustrating thing because you might
- 45:25Speaker 2: you might also sit there and absolutely nothing comes out,
- 45:28Speaker 2: and that's like, you know, it's like so you also
- 45:32Speaker 2: can't be like have something come out. Like it's kind
- 45:34Speaker 2: of it's just like about yeah, I guess it's like
- 45:36Speaker 2: about trying to like shut off even whatever the hell
- 45:43Speaker 2: you can distract yourself with. And I will fight with
- 45:45Speaker 2: myself like it's you know, it's yeah, it's difficult to
- 45:49Speaker 2: and a lot of the times it's like a yeah,
- 45:52Speaker 2: it's like a moment or it's like a conversation about
- 45:54Speaker 2: someone getting drunk or like did it. It's like a
- 45:55Speaker 2: thing and I've got like okay, and now I've got
- 45:58Speaker 2: to go and I want to go and write it
- 45:59Speaker 2: and and get that out now because I'll like forget
- 46:03Speaker 2: about it or I won't.
- 46:04Speaker 3: It won't feel it feels.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Yeah, it feels like these little moments where something I
- 46:08Speaker 2: get like get like super sparked by by whatever it is.
- 46:12Speaker 2: And I don't know, I think, yeah, I think I'm
- 46:14Speaker 2: I'm quite like I'm definitely an artist that will go
- 46:19Speaker 2: and look for things in all kinds of places.
- 46:22Speaker 3: Like it's yeah.
- 46:24Speaker 2: It's it's that there's like so much and it and
- 46:28Speaker 2: it also is like such a joy because if and
- 46:31Speaker 2: it's always like bled in you know, it's always bled
- 46:34Speaker 2: from fashion and film as well, and it and like
- 46:39Speaker 2: and from like my own personal life very much so.
- 46:42Speaker 2: But like it kind of all feels like very open
- 46:45Speaker 2: and open to you know that it could that kind
- 46:48Speaker 2: of something might come from from anywhere in a way.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Yeah, your videos are cool too. I actually really like you.
- 46:54Speaker 2: But yeah, I can't I can't wait for you to
- 46:56Speaker 2: watch the new video I just made for Do you
- 46:59Speaker 2: listen to that song model actress whatever?
- 47:01Speaker 1: I was going to bring that up for it.
- 47:03Speaker 2: I'm never been more excited about a video in my life.
- 47:06Speaker 2: Like I feel like it's just like completely different from
- 47:10Speaker 2: what I've ever done. It's really like taking the piss
- 47:13Speaker 2: out of myself and in like a kind of very
- 47:16Speaker 2: empowering way. But it's like genuinely really funny and I
- 47:21Speaker 2: don't know, I've never done something that's like funny and
- 47:24Speaker 2: it's got script in it, and like there's just like, yeah,
- 47:27Speaker 2: I feel like there's like so much personality that comes
- 47:30Speaker 2: out in it and kind of the yeah that I
- 47:34Speaker 2: just quite got to put so much of myself into it.
- 47:36Speaker 2: I really can't wait for you to see that one.
- 47:38Speaker 1: I'm excited to see you.
- 47:39Speaker 2: But yeah, so like fashion what I was saying, it's
- 47:41Speaker 2: like so much you know, there's so much that that
- 47:44Speaker 2: I can pull from and bring into like creating like
- 47:48Speaker 2: a world around the music, which is really like the
- 47:52Speaker 2: most you know, like yeah, you want, you want the
- 47:54Speaker 2: music to be awesome, but there's so much else around
- 47:58Speaker 2: that little three minute song yeah that you're you know,
- 48:02Speaker 2: that you're putting into making, yeah, making it an experience
- 48:07Speaker 2: for people.
- 48:07Speaker 1: It's cool the ye all these I mean, it's it's
- 48:09Speaker 1: like you've kind of I mean, I guess you just
- 48:12Speaker 1: you said you're taking like kind of like the piss
- 48:13Speaker 1: out of you. First of all, when I.
- 48:15Speaker 3: First take myself exactly.
- 48:17Speaker 1: When I first heard your I think I didn't get
- 48:20Speaker 1: hip to you till your first album and I heard
- 48:22Speaker 1: Move and I was kind of done it, like I
- 48:25Speaker 1: was the Susie Quadro line. I was like, I'm inn
- 48:28Speaker 1: like this is like it was, that's so funny.
- 48:30Speaker 2: That line was something that like I always have like
- 48:32Speaker 2: little lines and all things you know that you write
- 48:35Speaker 2: down on something, oh, something someone said to me, And
- 48:38Speaker 2: that line was like I was backstage at a white
- 48:41Speaker 2: stripe show like years.
- 48:42Speaker 3: And years and years before and years ago there.
- 48:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and I was, and I was wearing like
- 48:47Speaker 2: some like leather thing and I was quite young, and
- 48:49Speaker 2: Jack White like walked back, like walked past me and
- 48:53Speaker 2: was like, oh, you look like Susie Quatro and that,
- 48:56Speaker 2: and that was like I didn't know who Susie Quatro was,
- 48:58Speaker 2: but I was like, I was like, who's that? And
- 49:01Speaker 2: I like went home and got really into her music,
- 49:03Speaker 2: and I was like, and you know, I wrote down
- 49:05Speaker 2: like dear Harry.
- 49:06Speaker 3: Like like Jack White said that I like Susie Quatrix.
- 49:10Speaker 2: So I ended up like putting that in a song
- 49:12Speaker 2: that was kind of about like a totally different thing
- 49:14Speaker 2: about like a certain night that had with somebody who
- 49:17Speaker 2: who didn't say that I looked like Susiequadron, but I
- 49:19Speaker 2: had that line in there.
- 49:20Speaker 3: Yeah, So sorry. That was a sidebar No, it's incredible.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Jack White told me I look like Malcolm Glad very different.
- 49:28Speaker 1: Jack White stories Susie Quadron, I love Malcai's a friend,
- 49:33Speaker 1: but Jesus Christ, Suzi Quadrill is cool as hell.
- 49:35Speaker 3: Yeah that was cool.
- 49:37Speaker 1: That's that's it's incredible that came from from from him,
- 49:39Speaker 1: from a from a Detroit No, the Detroit legend. But yeah,
- 49:43Speaker 1: I was in. I was in at that. So I
- 49:45Speaker 1: remember hearing that, heard that line, that's fucking incredible. I
- 49:47Speaker 1: heard the rest of songs, songs amazing, heard the album,
- 49:50Speaker 1: loved that album, and then I was like, looked at Hi.
- 49:51Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I didn't. I didn't even know
- 49:52Speaker 1: you were a model and an actress. But it's incredible
- 49:55Speaker 1: that you have all these different sort of areas to play,
- 49:59Speaker 1: being able to go do Daisy Joneson's six or whatever
- 50:02Speaker 1: comes next in terms of your acting, and then go
- 50:04Speaker 1: do an album. It's like if something ever gets frustrated
- 50:07Speaker 1: and isn't fun anymore, you can kind of go focus
- 50:08Speaker 1: on the other thing.
- 50:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm really I'm really lucky to have had that experience,
- 50:13Speaker 2: especially like I mean, it's it felt like that to
- 50:15Speaker 2: be honest with you, like who knows what the next
- 50:17Speaker 2: few years will be like. And it was very unique
- 50:21Speaker 2: the last couple of years to do to get to
- 50:23Speaker 2: do such an amazing show, and then you know, when
- 50:26Speaker 2: I even signed on to that show, I hadn't even
- 50:28Speaker 2: made a.
- 50:29Speaker 3: Record, so it was no, what did you sign on
- 50:32Speaker 3: like January twenty twenty, Wow?
- 50:34Speaker 1: Uh no, But.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Before that and then and then we went to rehearsals,
- 50:38Speaker 2: then everything closed down. Then we had to push for
- 50:40Speaker 2: a year and made very record in between. Then when
- 50:43Speaker 2: the world shut down, then we went back shot it.
- 50:46Speaker 2: And the day Daisy Jones finished was when my record
- 50:49Speaker 2: came out. And then we'd been acting going on tour,
- 50:52Speaker 2: and then I went on tour. So it was a
- 50:54Speaker 2: very unique, strange like that was like a very unique
- 50:57Speaker 2: situation where like, oh, it's been like I feel like, yeah,
- 51:00Speaker 2: when I look at like, oh, being able to act
- 51:04Speaker 2: and do music and do that that I really think
- 51:07Speaker 2: like the lost yeah, the last two it's a unique situation.
- 51:10Speaker 2: And it was like it wasn't like very sustainable, Like
- 51:13Speaker 2: I was waking up at like four in the morning
- 51:14Speaker 2: doing interviews for the album.
- 51:16Speaker 3: Release, like it was like incredibly hactic.
- 51:18Speaker 2: It probably wouldn't like something that like that I don't
- 51:21Speaker 2: think would work now, like especially now I have like
- 51:23Speaker 2: a kid, Yeah, exactly. So it was very it was
- 51:26Speaker 2: like a very unique kind of set of events and
- 51:28Speaker 2: like and also like and kind of finally having that
- 51:32Speaker 2: moment where I could where I could kind of where
- 51:35Speaker 2: I yeah got it together to even like put a
- 51:38Speaker 2: record out and like push myself in that way because
- 51:40Speaker 2: I was yeah, I was like scared. I was like, yeah,
- 51:43Speaker 2: it was really like a hell back for a long
- 51:45Speaker 2: time because of like, yeah, I guess like a lot
- 51:49Speaker 2: of like fear of and it's just timing.
- 51:51Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 51:51Speaker 2: Sometimes sometimes just suddenly something your your instincts suddenly go okay,
- 51:57Speaker 2: it's it's time to. It's it's like time to, it's
- 52:00Speaker 2: it's your you know. It's like a moment where and
- 52:02Speaker 2: I had, yeah I had, I had low expectations and
- 52:05Speaker 2: it turned out like better than I thought it would,
- 52:08Speaker 2: which is cool. But you just never I don't know,
- 52:10Speaker 2: you never know which way you're going in this crazy
- 52:13Speaker 2: world that we are in. So yeah, it's been Yeah,
- 52:16Speaker 2: I wouldn't It's not like yeah, I don't know if
- 52:18Speaker 2: it will always be.
- 52:19Speaker 3: Like you know, seems so seamless as well, you.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Know, but also fil must have kind of be like
- 52:24Speaker 1: a which ways up kind of thing too, like you know,
- 52:26Speaker 1: in terms of you're on stage, and the performances in
- 52:29Speaker 1: Daisy Johones and the Six were like incredibly like not
- 52:33Speaker 1: realistic the word, but I mean they were incredibly convincing.
- 52:36Speaker 1: You guys.
- 52:36Speaker 2: They really made us like, actually do they like we
- 52:39Speaker 2: We had to play every single note they wanted to. Yeah,
- 52:43Speaker 2: they wanted the cameras, so we rehearsed hours and hours
- 52:45Speaker 2: a day. They wanted the cameras to be able to
- 52:48Speaker 2: roam and that you would be hitting the right note
- 52:49Speaker 2: at the right time.
- 52:50Speaker 3: So it was like they really weren't messing around.
- 52:52Speaker 2: They weren't playing with us like they were like when
- 52:55Speaker 2: we signed on, it was like this is going to
- 52:57Speaker 2: be an incredibly intense like we want.
- 52:59Speaker 3: Every you know.
- 53:01Speaker 2: And that was kind of scary because at the beginning,
- 53:03Speaker 2: I was like, you know, it's like a job interfere.
- 53:05Speaker 3: Like yeah, yeah, we all were doing that.
- 53:09Speaker 2: We were all like oh yeah, and then and then
- 53:11Speaker 2: you know, you just but yeah, you and we come on.
- 53:14Speaker 1: I mean, she's got such an amazing voice.
- 53:18Speaker 3: Her voice is really really stunning, and she should really.
- 53:24Speaker 1: She sounds great.
- 53:25Speaker 3: Yeah, she has like.
- 53:26Speaker 2: An incredibly unique like she can really belt and it's beautiful,
- 53:30Speaker 2: and she just knew what to do on stage, Like
- 53:32Speaker 2: it was unbelievable.
- 53:33Speaker 1: It has to be in her DNA somewhere.
- 53:34Speaker 2: Oh my god, I mean everything, Like she's just like
- 53:38Speaker 2: such an amazing actress and like such a fun human
- 53:41Speaker 2: to be around, like everyone was.
- 53:44Speaker 3: But yeah, so that was that was that.
- 53:47Speaker 2: Yeah, we we kind of like knew going in that
- 53:49Speaker 2: it was really going to be like that.
- 53:50Speaker 3: You know, it was serious.
- 53:51Speaker 2: It was boot camp and we did so much, so
- 53:54Speaker 2: much work before we actually got on stage, but it
- 53:56Speaker 2: was Yeah, it made it.
- 53:58Speaker 3: It made it like so much.
- 53:59Speaker 2: It made it like so rewarding actually and so funny
- 54:02Speaker 2: as well to do that with a group of people,
- 54:04Speaker 2: you know, like it's so funny to be like basically
- 54:07Speaker 2: suck and like and all just like get better together
- 54:11Speaker 2: and actually like by the end be like, yeah, we
- 54:13Speaker 2: like we did this.
- 54:14Speaker 1: You guys could actually do an album that wasn't the soundtrack.
- 54:18Speaker 3: I know, it would be so fun. Yeah, it would
- 54:20Speaker 3: be fun.
- 54:21Speaker 2: We were trying to we were trying to go on
- 54:22Speaker 2: stage and everything, and then there was like strikes and
- 54:25Speaker 2: all kinds of things that happened.
- 54:26Speaker 1: Yeah, before you go, what what's the store? Lawsuit? Peacked
- 54:32Speaker 1: my my?
- 54:33Speaker 3: Oh yeah, do you like it?
- 54:34Speaker 1: I do? And then yeah, but like it was that
- 54:38Speaker 1: was that? What I mean? Did it? Does that come
- 54:41Speaker 1: up from your life or is it just I feel
- 54:42Speaker 1: like that.
- 54:43Speaker 2: One was like a cheeky like we wanted like a
- 54:45Speaker 2: metaphor for like I can't Yeah, I kind of like
- 54:49Speaker 2: love the idea of yeah, it's probably what you're going
- 54:52Speaker 2: back to you like sounding quite mean, actually, isn't it.
- 54:54Speaker 3: It's like you're like, that's scary. That is scary.
- 54:57Speaker 2: But I thought that word was quite like an entertaining
- 55:01Speaker 2: kind of idea of like, yeah, all the girls lyning
- 55:03Speaker 2: around the bathroom and like everyone's everyone's exchanging information and
- 55:07Speaker 2: like there's a bunch of that like know, you know,
- 55:10Speaker 2: we've all like got we've all like actually discussed what
- 55:14Speaker 2: you're like, and we've got this like yeah, it's like
- 55:16Speaker 2: a metaphorical kind of like we've we've got like the
- 55:18Speaker 2: lawsuit of all the ship that you've that you've.
- 55:20Speaker 3: Done, you know. Yeah, but that was Yeah, I don't know,
- 55:24Speaker 3: I think like that kind.
- 55:25Speaker 1: Of how did you hit on that as a metaphor
- 55:26Speaker 1: sorry that kind.
- 55:27Speaker 2: Of well, it was like kind of that sort of yeah,
- 55:30Speaker 2: I guess I kind of wanted like a Chryl Crowe song.
- 55:33Speaker 2: I think that was like where where I went to
- 55:36Speaker 2: with that, like, you know, having that kind of like
- 55:38Speaker 2: laid back. I love Lucinder Williams. I love like that
- 55:43Speaker 2: plain song problem with It. That was like another so
- 55:47Speaker 2: good Katie from Maxahachius and it's like the most beautiful
- 55:51Speaker 2: song problem with It. But yeah, like something you know,
- 55:55Speaker 2: and and like going on tour as well, like you
- 55:58Speaker 2: start going, yeah, I don't know, like changed me a lot,
- 56:00Speaker 2: like starting to go and do shows and you think,
- 56:04Speaker 2: like you start going like what would be.
- 56:06Speaker 3: Like, yeah, good luck with that last suit you know
- 56:08Speaker 3: you got.
- 56:09Speaker 2: I just knew that kind of kept going around my
- 56:11Speaker 2: head and I was like, oh, that's that would be
- 56:13Speaker 2: like a really fun thing for people to pay for,
- 56:16Speaker 2: for people to like be singing a show.
- 56:18Speaker 1: That's pretty amazing. And I mean I was curious to also.
- 56:22Speaker 1: I guess I was sort of curious too, Like just
- 56:24Speaker 1: with your I mean there's so many I don't phrase
- 56:28Speaker 1: other than I guess in acting, it feels like there's
- 56:30Speaker 1: a lot of bad act bad actors, not in the
- 56:33Speaker 1: actual acting sense. I mean people with bad intentions, right right, right,
- 56:36Speaker 1: you can come across that, you can come across And
- 56:39Speaker 1: I don't know much about the modeling world. I imagine
- 56:43Speaker 1: that's there as well.
- 56:45Speaker 3: Fucked up.
- 56:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it's all fun, it's not all fucked It's actually
- 56:52Speaker 2: not all fun.
- 56:53Speaker 3: It's not all fun.
- 56:54Speaker 1: Not.
- 56:55Speaker 2: No, I think there's like I think it's there's like things. Yeah,
- 56:59Speaker 2: I think there's like things that I don't know. It's
- 57:02Speaker 2: kind of like, but I also think there's I don't know,
- 57:05Speaker 2: we forget that there's like really fucked up stuff that
- 57:07Speaker 2: goes on.
- 57:07Speaker 3: And like working at MacDonald's too, it's like you know, like.
- 57:10Speaker 2: There's so there's there's Yeah, there's fuck, there's functionhit everywhere.
- 57:14Speaker 2: I don't know this, there's a there's like there's stories
- 57:17Speaker 2: as old as the Tale of Time, isn't it with
- 57:19Speaker 2: like in our industry and like, but I don't know.
- 57:24Speaker 2: Do you don't think music industry is fucked up as well?
- 57:27Speaker 3: Or it can be fucked up or they can be No,
- 57:29Speaker 3: you don't think no, it can be No, it can
- 57:31Speaker 3: be right.
- 57:31Speaker 2: Like look at like the history of like what happens
- 57:34Speaker 2: to musicians and like and how I don't know, I
- 57:37Speaker 2: think you can get Yeah, I think, yeah, maybe it's
- 57:40Speaker 2: like a difficult thing too. I think Schapel Warren spoke
- 57:45Speaker 2: about it recently. I feel like do you remember she
- 57:47Speaker 2: was talking about like she said something like, oh, people
- 57:50Speaker 2: do very well when like there's sort of like no
- 57:53Speaker 2: boundaries and you have to you kind of you get
- 57:56Speaker 2: like worked into the ground or like you can do
- 57:58Speaker 2: very well, but like you you personally will you know,
- 58:02Speaker 2: it's hard to Yeah, maybe it's hard to like have that.
- 58:06Speaker 3: I guess it's I guess only.
- 58:07Speaker 2: You can go, hey, is it crazy that I haven't
- 58:10Speaker 2: had like a day off in six months?
- 58:13Speaker 3: Or you know what I mean?
- 58:13Speaker 2: Like and and that's actually quite difficult to be the
- 58:16Speaker 2: advocate for yourself to like be able to actually like
- 58:20Speaker 2: live life. And but it's like so important, especially with
- 58:24Speaker 2: especially with music, because if there's no if you're just
- 58:28Speaker 2: like working all the time and and you're not actually
- 58:31Speaker 2: going to get to go and like live life, like
- 58:34Speaker 2: what the hell, you know, you won't have anything to.
- 58:38Speaker 3: To write about.
- 58:39Speaker 2: So there has to be like that that breathing that
- 58:42Speaker 2: kind of like off time in a way. But yeah,
- 58:45Speaker 2: you have to kind of like learn how to advocate
- 58:47Speaker 2: for yourself, which is something which is difficult when you're
- 58:51Speaker 2: when you know you want to do really well and
- 58:55Speaker 2: you want to like please everyone around you and all
- 58:57Speaker 2: that kind of stuff.
- 58:58Speaker 3: It gets easy.
- 58:59Speaker 2: I think it gets Yeah, I don't know for me personally,
- 59:01Speaker 2: it's got it gets. It just gets easier and actually
- 59:05Speaker 2: more enjoyable as I get older, because.
- 59:09Speaker 3: I'm better. You go, like, I've been around the block.
- 59:11Speaker 3: I kind of know.
- 59:12Speaker 2: I know what it looks like to to be working
- 59:16Speaker 2: a lot and doing well and also be miserable, and
- 59:18Speaker 2: like you know, you you kind of you you kind
- 59:21Speaker 2: of like figure it out more more.
- 59:24Speaker 1: You're doing a great job. I wish I knew how
- 59:26Speaker 1: to say no other people and set more boundaries for myself.
- 59:29Speaker 1: So I'm walking away.
- 59:30Speaker 2: Do you feel do you feel like overworked? Do you
- 59:33Speaker 2: feel like it's too everything's like a lot and we're
- 59:36Speaker 2: in your workplace though we got it's like, yeah, actually
- 59:40Speaker 2: this is insane a little yeah, but.
- 59:46Speaker 1: You know, actually, but you know what what I get
- 59:48Speaker 1: to do is, but it's it's it's and it's harder.
- 59:50Speaker 1: But I was gonna say, what I get to do
- 59:51Speaker 1: is fun and so I think it disguises a little
- 59:54Speaker 1: more fun. Sometimes it's all about fun.
- 59:56Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, it is about That's why I'm I don't know.
- 59:59Speaker 2: That's where I'm like trying to trying to go at
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: the moment is like how actually, like sometimes you forget
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: that things can actually be really fun and like it
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: doesn't you know, it get Yeah, it feels like it
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: gets more and more fun as like a sort of Yeah,
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: you have like amazing collaborators around you, and you have
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: like great people and you sort of can discern better
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: and like what you know who and what you want
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: to be around and.
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: Like how you want to create.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: Yeah, something I think about and like maybe yeah, I
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: don't have to be like tortured and crazy and fucked
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: up to like make stuff, you know, and it can
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: there's like it doesn't.
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe it doesn't always have to be like that
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: so much.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: That's the hope. That's the hope.
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: Yeah, you know that's like that's like, yeah, I kind
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: of have that on my album cover for Memoir of
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: Sparkle Muff and I have like on the back cover
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: it side there's like this orange red sort of like
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: La glare, which is sort of like glamorous and like sinful,
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: and I've got this like kind of diamond choker around
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: my neck and it's like a cage. And and then
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: the front cover is sort of this like I was
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: like thinking about like that movie More Holland Drive and
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: like you know, the car crash in there, and I've
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: like come down the street and this glamorous dress and
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: I'm I found this like kind of safe, cocooned oasis
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: that I've like created myself. There's like two kind of
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: like flip sides for like for like the memoirs. So
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: a lot of the album kind of like almost is
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: like dealing or like confronting that sort of like metamorphois.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: So are you the are you the Sparkle?
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: Course? Yeah?
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: And it does it actually feel like a memoir? Does
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: it actually feel like a memoir?
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: And someone, Yeah, it does in a lot of ways.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: I guess it's like yeah, it's I'm always like, so
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: I just like love, I love like I just like
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: love people's memoirs. I'm obsessed, like that is what I
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: want to know about. I want to know about like
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: real people's lives, Like like I love like the Jane
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: Fonder documentary.
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: That one was like.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: I was just talking about the other day I watched it.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: I mean maybe because it's a plane. I cried watching that.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: It's amazing, was wild because it's just like seeing her
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: tapestry of her life and like how everything connected in
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: the career and the different partners she had, and like
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: just to be able to kind of like contextualize all
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: that and see like the span of this like beautiful,
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: amazing life that she's had.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: She's had one of the most incredible livesset and and
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: and you think obviously with her father being who he
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: was that you know, but the child I was just
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: just broke my heart, you know that whole bit. Yeah,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: but you know, but then.
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: It's unbelievable, isn't it. It's like I never knew anything
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: like that about.
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: About no clue about her, no clue.
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: And you look at her and you're like, you're a
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: fucking survivor, like and you thrive and the most.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: Fucking incredible people ever, you know what I mean, Like
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: all the ship she did with Ted Turner and and
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: and for for you know, for bringing in people even
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: like that. Don't like, don't it's just like what in
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: the do you wanna say? The workout videos, workout videos wild.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: I had no clue because I remember I remember my mom,
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: Grandma's sad around the house.
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: Yeah, what is it?
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: You know, you know, the contacts behind it, the story
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: of what's actually going on?
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: Who knows?
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: Very cool, incredible, like yeah, I love I love like
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: her memoir. I really loved or like her documentary. There
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: was a bunch. There's like a an artist called Duncan.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: Hannah was super inspired by his Like they're like his
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: diaries from the sixties and seventies.
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: These are so cool.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: It's just like like, oh, on Monday, like lou Reed
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: walked in and like an interaction he's had with him
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: and he kind of actually like paints him and not
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: so much of a nice light, which is kind of
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: fun because it's just exactly as it was happening. And
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: like Liz Fair's book I really enjoyed. She wrote a
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: memoir of called Horror Stories, which is like do you.
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: Know about it?
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: These very honest vignettes from like her life and as
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: a rock star, and she's so honest and there's like, yeah,
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: there's certain like chapters in that in that book where
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: it's like it's kind of like shifting it almost like shit,
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: you know when you read something and you're like, oh,
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: like I'll almost I'll remember this when I'm thinking about
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: doing this, or like, you know, it was so so beautiful.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: I love like Julia Fox's autobiography.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: I've never read that one.
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: It's brilliant, Like yeah, it's absolutely brilliant, Like yeah, just
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: to like have that.
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: So yeah, I don't know.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: Maybe I'm not like ready to write my memoirs yet,
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: but I definitely like that doing it in and in and.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: Out album will suffice for now. You've got a long
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: way to go. Thanks so much for for for the
