- 0:15Speaker 1: Capiteltier on a Friday show, what are some of the
- 0:19Speaker 1: top storylines as we get ready for camp which starts
- 0:23Speaker 1: on July the twenty eighth when they report and I
- 0:26Speaker 1: believe they will be on the field for the first
- 0:29Speaker 1: time on July the twenty ninth, as the Birds are
- 0:32Speaker 1: almost back. Baby, we're breaking it all down right now.
- 0:35Speaker 1: So of the top storylines for camp with Adam Kaplan
- 0:38Speaker 1: from the Inside of the Birds podcast right now on
- 0:41Speaker 1: a Friday Football at four, Adam, what's up, buddy.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Hey, good to talk to you, Michah And just so
- 0:46Speaker 2: you know, the first five days of practice are kind
- 0:48Speaker 2: of like OTA's. You're limited by the CBA of what
- 0:53Speaker 2: you're allowed to do the first five days. It's called
- 0:55Speaker 2: the acclamation period five day and look it's more important
- 0:59Speaker 2: than but it's after that five day acclamation period things
- 1:04Speaker 2: get more physical. There's certain there are more things you
- 1:06Speaker 2: could do, and then the competition really ramps up.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Well, obviously there's a lot of stories we know going
- 1:12Speaker 1: in here, not bigger than possibly Jalen Carter and what
- 1:17Speaker 1: that situation will look like for him moving forward, because
- 1:20Speaker 1: you know, Jalen Carter could come in as a malcontent
- 1:23Speaker 1: for all we know.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Yeah, Remember he's coming off Mike a season that's disappointing.
- 1:29Speaker 2: He had both shoulders, have had the what they were
- 1:34Speaker 2: called a procedure. It wasn't surgery, it was the shots
- 1:37Speaker 2: and both shoulders. So the hope is the rehab and
- 1:40Speaker 2: the strength training and so forth is going to be
- 1:43Speaker 2: a factor. But the big deal air Mike is with
- 1:45Speaker 2: him is contractually he has tears left on his deal.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Remember deal was picked up a fifth year option. Now
- 1:52Speaker 2: there there are a couple of things to watch here.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Does Juw Rosenalys's agent, can he reach and adjusted to
- 2:00Speaker 2: get more money for Carter at least this year. Do
- 2:02Speaker 2: they do what's called a revised deal prior to the
- 2:06Speaker 2: start of the training camp so you get him on the
- 2:08Speaker 2: field early on and there's no interruption because Mike, if
- 2:12Speaker 2: he can't reach anything here, Carter is the only scheduled
- 2:16Speaker 2: to make just over three point seven million dollars. Now,
- 2:20Speaker 2: we could talk all we want how disappointing the season
- 2:22Speaker 2: was less season, but he's certainly worth more than that.
- 2:27Speaker 2: So that's something to watch and whether they could reach
- 2:31Speaker 2: some kind of revised deal before started training camp, and
- 2:33Speaker 2: then if not, do they do a holdout. You can
- 2:37Speaker 2: only have a holdout when you have a contract. It
- 2:40Speaker 2: there's no such thing as say hold out when you
- 2:41Speaker 2: don't have a contract. It's kind of a misnomer. You're
- 2:45Speaker 2: not holding out for you know, you can't hold out
- 2:47Speaker 2: from a contract you don't have. But in this case,
- 2:49Speaker 2: he does have a contract. So if he doesn't report
- 2:51Speaker 2: on time, that would be a contract holdout, which means
- 2:54Speaker 2: he'd be subject to fifty thousand dollars per day fines.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Watch that Mike. Does he a hold in where both
- 3:01Speaker 2: sides agree that he won't practice until they get something
- 3:06Speaker 2: done with his contract. Well to see Mike, But this
- 3:08Speaker 2: is a big deal and we have to watch this
- 3:10Speaker 2: as camp starts.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Well, that is definitely a situation that we'll all be
- 3:13Speaker 1: keeping an eye on because Jalen Carter, you know, many
- 3:17Speaker 1: believe Adam that he is the best player on that defense, right,
- 3:20Speaker 1: I mean he could be very well be the best
- 3:23Speaker 1: player on that defense. So his health and his rightness
- 3:27Speaker 1: of mind are paramount or.
- 3:31Speaker 2: What Mike, team was their best player. He was not
- 3:33Speaker 2: their best player on defense and not even close last season.
- 3:36Speaker 2: It wasn't bad, but he wasn't himself like Queinion Mitchell
- 3:40Speaker 2: was elite last season. Cooper Dejean, who will talk about
- 3:44Speaker 2: later in what they asked him to do the least
- 3:46Speaker 2: changing positions now was a lead that position and for
- 3:50Speaker 2: them to reach a Super Bowl. Mike, you know, I
- 3:52Speaker 2: talked one of our subjects on football at four over
- 3:54Speaker 2: the last few weeks was well will it take for
- 3:56Speaker 2: the Eagles to make a Super Bowl run? And Jeff
- 3:58Speaker 2: and I also did a whole show on this earlier
- 4:01Speaker 2: this week. We did offensive defense, and believe me, Carter
- 4:04Speaker 2: playing at a great level as part of it.
- 4:06Speaker 1: All right, Adam Caplan, let's go to the offensive line.
- 4:10Speaker 1: They had a very uneven year last season, to say
- 4:13Speaker 1: the least, And.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Mike, we all missed on this one. Anyone who went
- 4:18Speaker 2: to training camp, we weren't really looking for the health
- 4:20Speaker 2: of their offensive line. We didn't know reason. I think
- 4:23Speaker 2: they wouldn't be elite. In terms of run blocking, well,
- 4:25Speaker 2: they were poor, really poor. The fact I said on
- 4:29Speaker 2: our show earlier this week that this is our ninth
- 4:31Speaker 2: year was the worst run blocking we've seen from their
- 4:33Speaker 2: offensive line, and that's that's not good. Though they were
- 4:36Speaker 2: pretty really good actually pass protection. It was for the
- 4:40Speaker 2: it was because their physical health, mostly Mike. So we'll
- 4:43Speaker 2: be we'll be watching for this. How do they handle
- 4:45Speaker 2: the reps in training camp. We talked about it on
- 4:48Speaker 2: our show about seeing how good their backup depth is
- 4:51Speaker 2: at guard. We'll we'll we'll learn that as training camp
- 4:54Speaker 2: goes along in the preseason. But the health and the performance,
- 4:59Speaker 2: particularly in the run game is paramount to their success season.
- 5:02Speaker 2: There's no question about it.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Yet. We know that, and they had so many injury
- 5:06Speaker 1: situations there, so the health the big time thing. But
- 5:09Speaker 1: that is maybe the biggest key to get this whole
- 5:12Speaker 1: offense rolling for new offensive coordinator Sean Manning. And there
- 5:17Speaker 1: are so many stories and peals of the onion on
- 5:19Speaker 1: this one.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't wait to see this timing based offense,
- 5:22Speaker 2: which we've been talking about since February Mike when he
- 5:25Speaker 2: came in. This is gonna be fun, Mike, this is
- 5:28Speaker 2: gonna be fun to see what Mannion does in his
- 5:31Speaker 2: first year play calling and only his third year coaching.
- 5:34Speaker 2: And look, it's a big gamble by the Eagles, but
- 5:37Speaker 2: behind the scenes, they're super, super confident. We've been told
- 5:40Speaker 2: about Manion. They're excited to see what Hurts can do.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I'm one of the few people, maybe in the media,
- 5:48Speaker 2: who believes that he's going to do well in this
- 5:50Speaker 2: timing based offense because there's no no more. There's no
- 5:52Speaker 2: it's not like they're going back to Syriani's offense. They're
- 5:55Speaker 2: not doing that. If it doesn't work, you could run.
- 5:58Speaker 2: I mean, they're gonna be a run based offense anyway,
- 6:00Speaker 2: but you could reduce the playbook, you can reduce the
- 6:03Speaker 2: volume that you give Hurts. But we'll see how they
- 6:06Speaker 2: develop their relationship and Parks Fraser as the quarterback coach.
- 6:09Speaker 2: It's a big step up for Parks. It's the first
- 6:12Speaker 2: time he's run a quarterback room. Something we'll be watching.
- 6:15Speaker 2: But let's see, let's see how Let's see how Hurts
- 6:17Speaker 2: and many doing Manny and overall and the buy in
- 6:20Speaker 2: from all the offensive players because we were told last
- 6:22Speaker 2: year there was not a great buy in with Patula. Unfortunately.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Yeah, there's so many you know things here, like you
- 6:28Speaker 1: don't even want to think about, like what if the
- 6:29Speaker 1: offense does it work? You know, do you want to
- 6:31Speaker 1: bring in another new coordinator? You know? If that? I
- 6:35Speaker 1: mean it just it just shows you how paramount this
- 6:39Speaker 1: season is for this offense.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Mike, you can't do that because what you're doing, let's
- 6:44Speaker 2: say it's not working. Well, you've completely changed the terminology.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I've been told repeatedly you cannot change terminology in season.
- 6:54Speaker 2: It's now full West Coast, it's the Verberant. It's just
- 6:58Speaker 2: you can't do it. So again, you could. You could
- 7:01Speaker 2: reduce the volume, Nick Sirianity does not run this type
- 7:06Speaker 2: of offense, So it would be a cluster whatever you
- 7:09Speaker 2: want to call it if it doesn't work. Mike, I'm
- 7:11Speaker 2: going to be you know, it's a family show here,
- 7:13Speaker 2: but it just would not work.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Mike.
- 7:15Speaker 2: I get it. I know they're they're they're Look I've
- 7:17Speaker 2: seen it in social media. There are a lot of
- 7:18Speaker 2: people saying, why would you ask him to do this?
- 7:20Speaker 2: He's never running offense like this. Well he's not a rookie, Mike. Look,
- 7:25Speaker 2: he he's going to have to do it, and I'm
- 7:28Speaker 2: looking forward to seeing how it transpires.
- 7:31Speaker 1: All right, let's go to We know that A. J.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Brown is out and they drafted a wide receiver in
- 7:38Speaker 1: the first round. What kind of storyline surround Mackay Lemon.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Yeah, this is the thing, Mike, He's gonna they're expecting
- 7:46Speaker 2: him to start. Okay, if he's their starting slot receiver, well,
- 7:50Speaker 2: if they use them, if they if they just go
- 7:52Speaker 2: if they start Smith and Lemon. I know Sirianny does
- 7:56Speaker 2: not like the terms X at n Z. He says,
- 8:00Speaker 2: two outside and an inside receiver. Fine, you could reduce Lemon,
- 8:04Speaker 2: which they're going to do. He's not a true outside receiver,
- 8:06Speaker 2: and DeVante could play outside. He could play reduced outside.
- 8:10Speaker 2: So they're going to be their starting receivers when they
- 8:12Speaker 2: go to eleven personnel, don Tavian Wix will be in
- 8:15Speaker 2: and those are your three most likely right. But the
- 8:19Speaker 2: big thing for Lemon is he's got to show he
- 8:21Speaker 2: can get off press coverage at this level. He's got
- 8:24Speaker 2: to show that the hamstring, the issue that he had
- 8:26Speaker 2: in the off season, is fine. We're expected to be
- 8:28Speaker 2: fine in less than two weeks. But look, he missed
- 8:32Speaker 2: a chunk of the off season in terms of being
- 8:34Speaker 2: on the field. That's not good. And he's a first
- 8:36Speaker 2: round pick. My first round picks they don't sit here
- 8:38Speaker 2: one and the NFL less. They're not ready mentally, so
- 8:42Speaker 2: we're expecting him to be started. Eagles are and we'll
- 8:44Speaker 2: see how it goes.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't like the fact that he had that
- 8:47Speaker 1: hamstring issue. That's something that bothers me a little bit.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Anybody who has hamstring issues, they seemingly linger. I know
- 8:53Speaker 1: he hasn't done much of the last couple of weeks,
- 8:55Speaker 1: but you'd hate to see that thing resurface itself when
- 8:59Speaker 1: they get back out on the field. Mackay Lemon another
- 9:02Speaker 1: big story. We're all gonna be keeping on this. Jeff
- 9:04Speaker 1: and I talked about it extensively on Wednesday, which was
- 9:08Speaker 1: Cooper gen moving to safety potentially getting more you know,
- 9:12Speaker 1: he has been such a big part of their defense,
- 9:16Speaker 1: playing in a very you know, prominent role. That is
- 9:19Speaker 1: kind of getting switched a little bit here.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Yeah. I remember, he's played two positions, nickel and he's
- 9:24Speaker 2: played corner, and now he's moving to safety. No more
- 9:27Speaker 2: corner unless one or two things happen. Willan gets benched
- 9:33Speaker 2: or Mitchell gets hurt. It would have to be Wolan
- 9:38Speaker 2: getting hurt or benched or Mitchell getting hurt. That's the
- 9:41Speaker 2: only way that Coope will play corner.
- 9:43Speaker 1: So well, that would be a terrible story.
- 9:45Speaker 2: I know you don't want it to good. Yeah, no,
- 9:48Speaker 2: but look, they invested twelve million Woolan. They don't they're
- 9:51Speaker 2: so bad at corner for the for the just for
- 9:54Speaker 2: the future, they're just not Remember Willan's not signed past
- 9:57Speaker 2: the season. Mitchell's phenomenal, but in terms of of developmental
- 10:01Speaker 2: young depth, ringo, it never happened. He doesn't even play
- 10:04Speaker 2: corner anymore. He's just really he's just a special teams player.
- 10:07Speaker 2: To Coreyan Bennett, you and I talked about this last time.
- 10:10Speaker 2: It didn't look good. But now he's got a full
- 10:12Speaker 2: off season, we'll see. Mac McWilliams was he mostly didn't play,
- 10:16Speaker 2: He didn't earn any playing time. And Johnston Jones is
- 10:18Speaker 2: on a one year deal here. So look, they're moving
- 10:21Speaker 2: Coop to safety and he's going to play nickel when
- 10:24Speaker 2: when there's nickel situation, so safety's a different position. Mike,
- 10:29Speaker 2: I know there are a lot of teams told us
- 10:31Speaker 2: Cooper degine leading up to the draft that they thought
- 10:33Speaker 2: he would he would not be a good corner, be
- 10:35Speaker 2: an average corner and play safety. That's actually what they
- 10:37Speaker 2: told us. Well, Vic Fangers kind of told us he
- 10:40Speaker 2: thinks he's more of a safety than the corner. Vic
- 10:43Speaker 2: rules the roost. He makes the decisions, and it's his defense,
- 10:46Speaker 2: it's it's his run, and it's just different for him.
- 10:50Speaker 2: It's a different mindset. Coops, He's mastered corner. He didn't
- 10:53Speaker 2: do badly at corner, by the way when he played it,
- 10:55Speaker 2: and he obviously said elite, elite, Nickels dynamics. So we'll
- 10:59Speaker 2: see what happened. But we got to see how he
- 11:01Speaker 2: looks here.
- 11:02Speaker 1: All right, Well, let's go to a big storyline you
- 11:04Speaker 1: kind of touched on. But how big is Woolen and
- 11:09Speaker 1: his addition to this defense?
- 11:11Speaker 2: It's big now again, OTAs we've liken this to double
- 11:15Speaker 2: a baseball, you don't really read into anything.
- 11:19Speaker 1: We know.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Our role at inside of the Birds is we make
- 11:21Speaker 2: no definitive statements. We take down every note that we
- 11:25Speaker 2: have and we've seen with our eyes, we hear, we're told,
- 11:29Speaker 2: and then we take it into training camp. The triple
- 11:31Speaker 2: A is I came over this eight years ago, Mike,
- 11:33Speaker 2: I still say it. Nothing's changed training camp though, because
- 11:37Speaker 2: you can get physical, you cannot get physical and OTS.
- 11:39Speaker 2: That's why I don't I don't put much stock in
- 11:42Speaker 2: if any into OTS doesn't mean much to me. But
- 11:44Speaker 2: the good thing about Woolan is he did look good.
- 11:46Speaker 2: You can build on that now that competition comes. Now
- 11:49Speaker 2: there's no A j. Brown. We don't even know if
- 11:51Speaker 2: he's gonna play. He's going to play in the preseason.
- 11:53Speaker 2: We'll have to see. But this is a new defense
- 11:56Speaker 2: for him. He's got Fangio. This is gonna missing Vic
- 12:01Speaker 2: vouch for him. When he talked to the media, he
- 12:04Speaker 2: clearly said he watched his tape. He like what he saw.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Other teams did not like his tape. We'll see who's right.
- 12:10Speaker 2: We'll see if Willren is the guy that Howary Roseman
- 12:13Speaker 2: to sign him. They're gonna pay him twelve million, Mike.
- 12:15Speaker 2: They fully guaranteed everything. Even if he gets benched, he's
- 12:20Speaker 2: not getting cut. They're not cutting him. They're not cutting
- 12:22Speaker 2: that contract. There's no chance. So they don't really have
- 12:25Speaker 2: John and Jones turns thirty three in September. Mike, you
- 12:29Speaker 2: don't want to look you can't go. He can't be bent.
- 12:31Speaker 2: That can't happen, Like, that's not gonna that's not gonna work.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Any chance for them to be super Bowl teams out
- 12:36Speaker 2: if he doesn't play well, they just don't have the
- 12:38Speaker 2: quality of depth. So we're gonna see what happens. But
- 12:42Speaker 2: the good thing is he's healthy. He did look good.
- 12:45Speaker 2: You hope he can build on that. I mean, you know,
- 12:47Speaker 2: I know Joe Banner, form Eagle's president, was very big
- 12:50Speaker 2: on this send and when I've talked to him over
- 12:51Speaker 2: the years, he was big. Now it's not it's a
- 12:53Speaker 2: proven deal in terms of he didn't get two years
- 12:55Speaker 2: or more, but Joe said they love signing players that
- 13:01Speaker 2: were young a one year deals and they feel like
- 13:03Speaker 2: they've been disrespected or that they couldn't get multiple years.
- 13:08Speaker 2: So let's see how this does with Riquel and maybe
- 13:10Speaker 2: on the chip with his shoulder there.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. You take a look at Wollan. He's
- 13:14Speaker 1: a very imposing guy, big physical corner, but he has
- 13:18Speaker 1: been very up and down with the Seattle Seahawks. Will
- 13:21Speaker 1: see how he fits in those storylines and more. Getting
- 13:24Speaker 1: us ready for Eagles Camp, which is almost here, Adam
- 13:27Speaker 1: Kaplan and the inside the Bird's crew all football season
- 13:30Speaker 1: long during Football four. Thanks Adam, I gotta thank you.
