- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey there, everyone. Welcome to the Braves and Dodgers postgame
- 0:08Speaker 1: show here on Foul Territory. I am Heidi Watney, and
- 0:11Speaker 1: I'm joined by Kevin Pillar and Todd Frazier here for
- 0:14Speaker 1: this one. We just had a great game. I mean,
- 0:16Speaker 1: well-pitched game. We were expecting a pitcher's duel, and Yamamoto
- 0:20Speaker 1: certainly lived up to the hype, guys. What are your thoughts?
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I guess my initial thoughts is It
- 0:27Speaker 2: sort of lived up to the height. I think Chris
- 0:29Speaker 2: sale was a little bit fatigued and I think that's
- 0:31Speaker 2: the advantage. We always talk about not wanting to play
- 0:34Speaker 2: in that first round, but then you talk about not
- 0:36Speaker 2: playing the first round.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Are you going to come out, you know, you know, a.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Little bit, you know, sloppy and stuff like that, but
- 0:42Speaker 2: it just felt like Yamamoto was the fresher pitcher. You know, I,
- 0:46Speaker 2: I got asked who I'd put my money on and
- 0:48Speaker 2: I'm betting on Chris sale every day of the week,
- 0:50Speaker 2: but I'm also not betting against Yamamoto ever, especially what
- 0:53Speaker 2: we witnessed last year.
- 0:55Speaker 3: On the biggest stage in the world series.
- 0:57Speaker 2: His entire postseason run, but incredibly competitive game. It was
- 1:02Speaker 2: one of those games when you're watching these two guys pitch,
- 1:05Speaker 2: it feels like you have to be locked in on
- 1:07Speaker 2: every pitch because one swing of the bat is really
- 1:09Speaker 2: what's going to be the outcome of this game. And
- 1:11Speaker 2: it really ended up being one big swing of the
- 1:13Speaker 2: bat from Kike Hernandez that really changed this game.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:17Speaker 5: And from what I'm seeing as a hitter standpoint, you
- 1:20Speaker 5: go into these games and you're trying to figure out,
- 1:21Speaker 5: you know, what are we trying to hit off Yamamoto?
- 1:24Speaker 5: What are we trying to hit off Chris Sale? And
- 1:26Speaker 5: it seemed like they were on certain pitches on Chris Hill.
- 1:29Speaker 5: The fastball seemed to be harder to hit when they
- 1:31Speaker 5: got in certain counts. I think Kiki Hernandez absolutely studied
- 1:36Speaker 5: him and said, you know what, I'm sitting slow right
- 1:38Speaker 5: here and got a pitch that he can drive over
- 1:40Speaker 5: the wall. And next thing you know, it's a big
- 1:43Speaker 5: home run. And that's basically all they really needed there.
- 1:46Speaker 5: What a beautiful swing by him. And then Freddie Freeman
- 1:49Speaker 5: coming up with a home run on an inside fastball.
- 1:51Speaker 5: I don't know how he kept his hands inside the ball.
- 1:54Speaker 5: Yamamoto was filthy. His split finger looked like a fastball
- 1:58Speaker 5: every single time. It looked like the Braves who couldn't
- 2:00Speaker 5: figure him out at all. I mean, think about what
- 2:03Speaker 5: this guy has done in the playoffs. He's been absolutely amazing.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Yeah, 4-0 on the road during the postseason last year.
- 2:11Speaker 1: He absolutely knows how to go into an opposing house
- 2:14Speaker 1: and dominate. Let's delve deeper into the Dodgers and Braves
- 2:17Speaker 1: game three.
- 2:17Speaker 3: It's a bowl count.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Yes, it's time for a full count fueled by marathon.
- 2:30Speaker 1: And guys, some storylines in this one. Really, Chris Sale
- 2:33Speaker 1: had dominated this lineup when the two, Yamamoto and Sale,
- 2:37Speaker 1: matched up at the end of August. But here, Dave
- 2:39Speaker 1: Roberts said it during the game. The Dodgers hitters just
- 2:42Speaker 1: had some really good at-bats in those first four innings
- 2:45Speaker 1: against Sale. What do you guys think, Kevin?
- 2:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think that's exactly what you have
- 2:51Speaker 2: to do with these type of pitchers. And obviously, Todd,
- 2:53Speaker 2: you know, when you're facing the best of the best,
- 2:55Speaker 2: you don't necessarily want to sit around and get deep
- 2:58Speaker 2: into counts because you're going to get the wipeout stuff
- 3:00Speaker 2: and you're going to be behind the eight ball. And
- 3:02Speaker 2: more than likely, they're probably going to have their way
- 3:05Speaker 2: with you. Their quality of at-bats through the first two innings.
- 3:08Speaker 2: I think when they interviewed Walt Weiss in the third inning, yes,
- 3:12Speaker 2: he had punched out six guys, but he was at
- 3:15Speaker 2: 40-some-odd pitches. And I think that's exactly the type of
- 3:18Speaker 2: approach you have to have with these guys. It doesn't
- 3:20Speaker 2: mean sit back and be passive and not swing early
- 3:22Speaker 2: in the count, but be very selective of what you
- 3:25Speaker 2: want to hit.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Not what he's going to throw you, what you want
- 3:28Speaker 3: to hit.
- 3:28Speaker 2: And I think you saw that pay dividends later in
- 3:30Speaker 2: the game when what Todd mentioned, it looked like Kike Hernandez–
- 3:35Speaker 2: you know, who's making his first start of the postseason,
- 3:37Speaker 2: probably knew, hey, you're going to get Chris Sale at
- 3:39Speaker 2: some point. Go ahead and do your homework on this guy.
- 3:42Speaker 2: And it looked like he was educated. He made an
- 3:45Speaker 2: educated guess. He was going to sit on something soft
- 3:47Speaker 2: early in the count. And he got his pitch and
- 3:49Speaker 2: didn't miss. And that's the type of thing you have
- 3:51Speaker 2: to do to hit the best guys in the game.
- 3:53Speaker 2: And on the other side, it just felt like, you know,
- 3:57Speaker 2: Not to say Chris Sale is an easy guy to face.
- 4:00Speaker 3: He's not. He's a Hall of Famer.
- 4:01Speaker 2: He's one of the best pitchers in the game, a
- 4:03Speaker 2: guy I would never bet against. But really, you have
- 4:04Speaker 2: three pitches to deal with Chris Sale. You've got the four-seamer.
- 4:07Speaker 2: You've got the changeup. Yeah, the occasional two-seam, you know,
- 4:10Speaker 2: and obviously the wipeout slider. But Yamamoto, with the arsenal
- 4:13Speaker 2: of pitches he has, there's only so much you can
- 4:16Speaker 2: do when you study a guy like that.
- 4:17Speaker 3: When he has the ability to throw.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Talk about the first batter of the game, Drake Baldwin.
- 4:22Speaker 2: You know, he goes 3-2 hammer curveball to strike the
- 4:24Speaker 2: guy out. He can throw a splitter at any time
- 4:27Speaker 2: for a strike. He can throw it out of the zone.
- 4:29Speaker 2: He's just an absolute nightmare to face. And I don't
- 4:31Speaker 2: know how you would game plan against a guy like that.
- 4:35Speaker 5: And just think about this, like the one at bat.
- 4:36Speaker 5: I know it's not anything big, but, you know, you
- 4:39Speaker 5: look at Tucker's at bat first pitch swinging. He struggles
- 4:42Speaker 5: against Chris Sale. He says, I'm getting that first fastball.
- 4:44Speaker 5: I'm saying drives the ball to left field. You could
- 4:47Speaker 5: see the game plan was totally different for both sides.
- 4:51Speaker 5: I'm not saying the Dodgers absolutely blew them away. It
- 4:54Speaker 5: was a 3-1 game. But when they got the pitch
- 4:57Speaker 5: that they wanted and what they were looking for, Mookie
- 5:00Speaker 5: Betts hit the ball hard a couple times. You talk
- 5:02Speaker 5: about Kike, Kyle Tucker. You know, those sort of at-bats
- 5:07Speaker 5: loomed large in a close game. And, you know, listen,
- 5:11Speaker 5: the Dodgers are absolutely unbelievable team. They've been winning World
- 5:16Speaker 5: Series for the past couple years. They're there for a reason.
- 5:18Speaker 5: They come into a hostile environment. in Atlanta and take
- 5:21Speaker 5: game three. What a pivotal game.
- 5:23Speaker 4: What a swing game for them.
- 5:24Speaker 5: And now, even if they do lose, they still have
- 5:27Speaker 5: two opportunities to take home the division or the title.
- 5:31Speaker 4: They're moving on.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yeah, and a big storyline for this guy's heading into
- 5:35Speaker 1: this one was Shohei Otani being dropped to fifth in
- 5:38Speaker 1: the batting order. That's the lowest he's been in many years.
- 5:42Speaker 1: And he just really hasn't done a whole lot this postseason.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I know he's dealing with a lot of injuries ever since,
- 5:46Speaker 1: you know, going back to the injured list in September,
- 5:50Speaker 1: but he hasn't been doing much. And yet, you guys, baseball,
- 5:53Speaker 1: the ball will find you. He's dropped to fifth in
- 5:56Speaker 1: the order, and he comes up in the first inning
- 5:57Speaker 1: with two runners on, struck out in that at bat.
- 6:00Speaker 1: But what are your thoughts on the move by Dave
- 6:01Speaker 1: Roberts there?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Well, I think it's incredible that you have arguably the
- 6:07Speaker 2: best player that we've ever seen and almost a willingness
- 6:11Speaker 2: to accept that. There's a lot of guys in this
- 6:13Speaker 2: game that probably would say, no, this is where I
- 6:16Speaker 2: hit in the lineup. But I think that just kind
- 6:18Speaker 2: of speaks to the culture that's been created as the Dodgers.
- 6:21Speaker 2: It's not bigger than me, the one player. It's not
- 6:24Speaker 2: bigger than Shohei Otani. It's about what is best for
- 6:26Speaker 2: this team to win. And yeah, I mean, you look
- 6:28Speaker 2: at the numbers right here, they're very pedestrian for Shohei
- 6:31Speaker 2: Ohtani who we're used to seeing be arguably the best
- 6:35Speaker 2: hitter on the planet every single day and it's just
- 6:37Speaker 2: been kind of an uphill battle for him to you
- 6:41Speaker 2: know come back since the injuries and we don't even
- 6:43Speaker 2: know if he's fully healthy right now but his willingness
- 6:46Speaker 2: and Dave Roberts you know having the conversation with him
- 6:49Speaker 2: to move him down the lineup but it's funny how
- 6:51Speaker 2: the game of baseball works you know there's there's regardless
- 6:54Speaker 2: if you're hitting second or fifth or ninth like the
- 6:57Speaker 2: way baseball works, you're going to come up in a situation.
- 7:00Speaker 2: And unfortunately for Shohei Ohtani, moving him out of that
- 7:03Speaker 2: two hole, trying to like hide him a little bit
- 7:05Speaker 2: in that five hole. Sure enough, he comes up in
- 7:07Speaker 2: the first inning with runners on, two runners on with
- 7:10Speaker 2: two outs and strikes out.
- 7:11Speaker 3: But it's funny how that always seems to happen in
- 7:14Speaker 3: the game of baseball.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Yeah, I want to go over a couple of things.
- 7:18Speaker 5: I looked at a couple of batters for the Braves
- 7:20Speaker 5: here and I'm going with their big guns. I'm going
- 7:22Speaker 5: with Ronald Acuna. I said it before this series started.
- 7:24Speaker 5: I said, This guy's got to step up. He's four
- 7:27Speaker 5: for 18, really not doing much. Austin Riley, two for 16. Dubon,
- 7:32Speaker 5: four for 19. Olsen, three for 19. These guys in
- 7:36Speaker 5: through these playoffs, these are numbers that, you know, you
- 7:38Speaker 5: don't see too often from some of these hitters. So
- 7:40Speaker 5: they got to figure out a way to not, you know,
- 7:42Speaker 5: you talk about the home run, just get on base.
- 7:45Speaker 5: And I think that's the most disappointing thing for the Braves.
- 7:48Speaker 5: They're in every single one of these games but you
- 7:51Speaker 5: look at your big guys right now and it's, it's
- 7:54Speaker 5: not good.
- 7:54Speaker 4: It's a struggle.
- 7:55Speaker 5: And it felt like every at bat and every pitch
- 7:58Speaker 5: that Yamamoto threw today, it was like, Oh man, is
- 8:01Speaker 5: he going to get a hit? Is he going to
- 8:02Speaker 5: square the ball up? Like that all in between, like,
- 8:05Speaker 5: I don't think so. So that, you know, in your mind,
- 8:08Speaker 5: you're in the dugout. I I've been a part of
- 8:10Speaker 5: a bunch of those games. And so it was KP.
- 8:12Speaker 5: It's like, God, I hope somebody finds a way to
- 8:14Speaker 5: do this. You're hoping instead of knowing that it's going
- 8:17Speaker 5: to happen. And right now, You know, Braves three runs
- 8:19Speaker 5: in each of the first three games here. They're going
- 8:21Speaker 5: to have to supply a lot more.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Yeah, Yamamoto, 10 strikeouts on the day with the Braves hitters.
- 8:27Speaker 1: And one of the really notable things in the first
- 8:29Speaker 1: inning to me was Acuna burning an ABS challenge in
- 8:32Speaker 1: the first inning. Low leverage. I remember talking to Walt
- 8:36Speaker 1: Weiss earlier this year, and I said, what's your preference
- 8:40Speaker 1: with ABS with your players? What do you tell your guys?
- 8:42Speaker 1: And he said, look, if you're sure, if it's a
- 8:45Speaker 1: low leverage situation, you better be sure. If it's a
- 8:48Speaker 1: high leverage situation, okay, less so. Go ahead and try it.
- 8:51Speaker 1: But he goes, first inning and challenges, and and loses
- 8:55Speaker 1: one of their ABS challenge in the first inning of
- 8:57Speaker 1: the game, that's got to be frustrating for a manager.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Yeah, it's really frustrating.
- 9:02Speaker 2: And it's hard, you know, because you do get caught
- 9:05Speaker 2: up in the moment as a player. And, you know,
- 9:07Speaker 2: I wasn't fortunate enough to stay in the game long
- 9:09Speaker 2: enough to utilize it.
- 9:11Speaker 3: But I know what the emotions are like hitting.
- 9:14Speaker 2: And, you know, Ronald Acuna, one of the best players
- 9:16Speaker 2: in the game, he has a pretty good feel for
- 9:18Speaker 2: the strike zone. But to your point, you have to
- 9:21Speaker 2: have that extra layer of discipline as a competitor to
- 9:26Speaker 2: know that even though I think I'm probably right, like
- 9:29Speaker 2: I can't risk it. Like there's a difference between like,
- 9:32Speaker 2: I know a hundred percent I'm right. We're like, I'm
- 9:34Speaker 2: pretty sure I'm right. And in that situation, you know,
- 9:37Speaker 2: being the first inning, it puts the team behind the
- 9:41Speaker 2: eight ball because like, it makes it really difficult for
- 9:44Speaker 2: your catcher, Drake Baldwin, or Sean Murphy, when he's back there,
- 9:47Speaker 2: or even your hitters in certain situations, even if they
- 9:50Speaker 2: feel a much higher percentage, you know, 90, 95% sure.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Like you, it handcuffs your team a little bit. So
- 9:57Speaker 2: I think the ABS has been great for the game.
- 9:59Speaker 2: I love the, added layer of strategy. It adds to
- 10:02Speaker 2: both sides and it's just, you know, it's unfortunate that
- 10:05Speaker 2: they were, you know, burned by it early in the game.
- 10:08Speaker 2: It really kind of handcuffs the rest of the lineup
- 10:10Speaker 2: as well as your catcher.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:13Speaker 5: And I think, you know, you look at the two
- 10:14Speaker 5: best hitters, you got Acuna and you got Shohei. Both
- 10:17Speaker 5: of them on those pitchers kind of, I don't necessarily
- 10:20Speaker 5: spun out of the way, but there was like a
- 10:21Speaker 5: little herky jerky and like, oh man, it's gotta be
- 10:23Speaker 5: a ball. So they went here and that's the difference
- 10:26Speaker 5: in the playoffs. Like sometimes when you're off balance doesn't
- 10:29Speaker 5: necessarily mean the ball is a ball.
- 10:32Speaker 4: And your eyes will tell you the story when your
- 10:34Speaker 4: eyes move. Sometimes the baseball plays tricks.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:37Speaker 5: I guess it was one thing that, you know, it was,
- 10:40Speaker 5: it was different, but you know, you want your best
- 10:42Speaker 5: players up there. So maybe taking that chance wasn't the
- 10:45Speaker 5: worst thing in the world, but again, you gotta be
- 10:47Speaker 5: very specific.
- 10:48Speaker 4: And you got to be 100 percent. So anything in between,
- 10:51Speaker 4: you know, it's OK.
- 10:52Speaker 5: I mean, I go back to this Yankee Rays game yesterday.
- 10:56Speaker 5: If they challenge all those balls that were in between,
- 11:00Speaker 5: the umpire was wrong. And I think 90 percent of them.
- 11:03Speaker 5: So you wish they challenge them there, but they didn't.
- 11:06Speaker 5: And here you're kind of like, all right, let's slow
- 11:08Speaker 5: down a little bit.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Yeah, we've seen a couple of those games where an
- 11:11Speaker 1: umpire just doesn't seem to be having a game and
- 11:14Speaker 1: you're getting like multiple challenges in an inning. I do
- 11:17Speaker 1: think in the postseason, players have been a little more
- 11:19Speaker 1: reticent to use the challenges. But you saw it play
- 11:22Speaker 1: out in this game. Matt Olsen looked like he wanted
- 11:24Speaker 1: to challenge in the sixth, but they had already burned
- 11:27Speaker 1: one and he couldn't use up their second on a
- 11:29Speaker 1: questionable with nobody on in sixth inning. So he couldn't
- 11:32Speaker 1: go to it there. So Mauricio Dubon, if you look
- 11:37Speaker 1: at this Braves lineup, his defense, his defensive versatility, being
- 11:41Speaker 1: able to move all over the diamond. I mean, it's shortstop.
- 11:43Speaker 1: He's been great for that. I think he's been their
- 11:45Speaker 1: best defensive shortstop this year. And yet he's out there
- 11:48Speaker 1: in left field. And it's a great thing. He was
- 11:50Speaker 1: out there in left field early in the game because
- 11:51Speaker 1: Freddie Freeman would have had a home run. What do
- 11:53Speaker 1: you guys thought about Mauricio Dubon in that play on
- 11:56Speaker 1: the Freeman denied home run ball? Kevin, you've had a
- 12:00Speaker 1: couple of those.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, obviously, I love Mauricio Devont as a player,
- 12:04Speaker 2: and he's one of those moves that the Braves made
- 12:06Speaker 2: this offseason that didn't make a lot of headlines. But
- 12:09Speaker 2: then when you bring a guy like Mauricio Devont into
- 12:11Speaker 2: your organization, to your fan base, you realize, man, is
- 12:16Speaker 2: he the sexiest player out there? Is he going to
- 12:18Speaker 2: hit 30 homers, 40 homers?
- 12:19Speaker 3: Is he still 50 bases?
- 12:20Speaker 2: No, but he is just a great ball player, and
- 12:22Speaker 2: he just helps bring a winning culture to an already
- 12:25Speaker 2: really good team. And his versatility, it's one of the
- 12:28Speaker 2: best in the game. You know, he plays unbelievable shortstop.
- 12:31Speaker 2: He can play center field. He plays both corners. You
- 12:33Speaker 2: could pretty much put him anywhere on the diamond and
- 12:35Speaker 2: he's going to give you unbelievable defense. He gives you
- 12:39Speaker 2: quality at bats. He has the ability to kind of,
- 12:41Speaker 2: you know, shoot the ball the other way when it's necessary.
- 12:44Speaker 3: He could pull some homers.
- 12:45Speaker 2: He's just a really, really good player that good teams
- 12:49Speaker 2: need to have on their team. But Going back to
- 12:51Speaker 2: that play, it's just unbelievable instincts, first of all, and
- 12:55Speaker 2: just kind of this willingness and this competitor that he is. And,
- 12:59Speaker 2: you know, we talked a little bit off camera just
- 13:01Speaker 2: about you know, having the home field advantage and how
- 13:04Speaker 2: that play probably would have been much more difficult for
- 13:08Speaker 2: a visiting player. But the fact that he's been out there,
- 13:10Speaker 2: he understands kind of the depth of the warning track.
- 13:12Speaker 2: And that's a big part of it is when you're
- 13:14Speaker 2: running full speed, you have to have this kind of
- 13:16Speaker 2: internal clock. Yes, you're going to peak real quick, but
- 13:18Speaker 2: a lot of times you got to be eyes on
- 13:20Speaker 2: the ball. You got to be tracking it. So the
- 13:22Speaker 2: more that you're comfortable with your surroundings allows you to
- 13:25Speaker 2: know like, hey, I'm going one, two. When I hit
- 13:28Speaker 2: the third step, I got to get up in the air.
- 13:29Speaker 2: I know the fence is coming. He knows that the
- 13:32Speaker 2: fence is short, so he knows that he doesn't have
- 13:34Speaker 2: to necessarily get up on the wall to make that play.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Just an incredible play. You felt like it was a
- 13:40Speaker 2: huge momentum swing because at that point in time, it
- 13:45Speaker 2: would have put.
- 13:47Speaker 3: The Braves up in that game.
- 13:49Speaker 2: The fact that he was able to steal a home run,
- 13:52Speaker 2: keep the runner at first base, make an unbelievable play.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Chris Sale getting away with a pitch right there to
- 13:57Speaker 2: an unbelievable hitter in Freddie Freeman. You felt like Chris
- 14:01Speaker 2: Sale didn't necessarily have his best stuff right there, and
- 14:03Speaker 2: you're like, okay, he got away with one. Maybe that's
- 14:05Speaker 2: what kind of settles him into the game, but just
- 14:07Speaker 2: an unbelievable play by Mauricio Dubon. In some ways, he
- 14:10Speaker 2: almost made that really difficult play look so easy because
- 14:13Speaker 2: of how athletic he is, how aware he was of
- 14:17Speaker 2: his surroundings.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Just a tremendous play.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Tremendous play by him. And I want to know, Todd,
- 14:24Speaker 1: did you ever, I was asking Kevin Belort before the show,
- 14:27Speaker 1: if he ever had any home runs robbed and he
- 14:29Speaker 1: said he didn't hit enough cheapies to get robbed. How
- 14:31Speaker 1: about you, Todd's father? Do you have any taken back?
- 14:34Speaker 5: I had, I had one in Chicago when I was
- 14:37Speaker 5: with the white socks. I was actually, I, I just
- 14:40Speaker 5: can't remember who it was, but I hit opposite field.
- 14:44Speaker 5: And you know, when you go opposite field, usually you've
- 14:45Speaker 5: got to poke it. It robbed me from a home run. And, uh,
- 14:49Speaker 5: That's a terrible feeling. You know, a guy makes a
- 14:51Speaker 5: dive and play. You tip your cap. The robbing of
- 14:54Speaker 5: the home run, because those are big. Those are the
- 14:56Speaker 5: moneymakers right there. So that is that's not a good feel.
- 15:00Speaker 5: And I'm glad KP didn't rob any of mine because
- 15:03Speaker 5: I would not want to talk to him after this.
- 15:05Speaker 5: So that was he's caught a lot of my baseballs,
- 15:07Speaker 5: but no robbed home runs.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Thank God.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Yeah, KP, what'd you tell me before the show?
- 15:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I would have figured you probably had more than
- 15:17Speaker 2: one home run robbed in your career because, first of all,
- 15:21Speaker 2: you hit a lot of home runs, so you had
- 15:22Speaker 2: a lot of opportunities to get them robbed. But I
- 15:24Speaker 2: felt like a guy like you who had so much power,
- 15:27Speaker 2: you could kind of get jammed and still kind of
- 15:29Speaker 2: hit like a wall scraper. Me, I felt like I
- 15:31Speaker 2: never had any home runs robbed because I wasn't afforded
- 15:34Speaker 2: with missing a ball and having it go to the
- 15:37Speaker 2: first row. Like if I was going to hit a homer,
- 15:39Speaker 2: I had to get every bit of it. And where
- 15:41Speaker 2: I was going to hit them, they weren't going to
- 15:42Speaker 2: catch them. You know, I feel like it's guys that
- 15:44Speaker 2: hit a lot of homers that are big and strong.
- 15:46Speaker 2: They get away with like, man, I hit it a
- 15:47Speaker 2: little bit down on the barrel, a little bit towards
- 15:50Speaker 2: the end, but I'm so big and strong that I
- 15:51Speaker 2: can still hit it out. So I was surprised that
- 15:54Speaker 2: only one time you had one Rob, because probably most
- 15:57Speaker 2: of the time you were putting them 40 rows in the,
- 15:59Speaker 2: in the seats.
- 16:01Speaker 1: A little birdie says it was Lorenzo Cain, Todd.
- 16:03Speaker 4: You remember that?
- 16:04Speaker 1: You remember who it was?
- 16:05Speaker 5: That makes, that makes tons of sense. Cause he can
- 16:08Speaker 5: go get them with the best of them. So yeah,
- 16:09Speaker 5: maybe there was two of them now. So, Thanks, Locaine.
- 16:12Speaker 5: Appreciate you, doll.
- 16:14Speaker 1: We saw KP look like Spider-Man out there quite a bit.
- 16:18Speaker 1: What was your best, your favorite home run robbery?
- 16:22Speaker 2: Man, honestly, I mean, obviously the one I did in
- 16:24Speaker 2: the Rogers Center really changed my life. But I did
- 16:26Speaker 2: one a little bit later in my career when I
- 16:29Speaker 2: was with the Angels right after the All-Star break. We
- 16:32Speaker 2: were in Oakland before they moved. And I forgot who
- 16:37Speaker 2: was hitting. Lefty was hitting. It was the first batter
- 16:39Speaker 2: of the game. right after the All-Star break, and I
- 16:42Speaker 2: went up going to right center field, and I kind
- 16:45Speaker 2: of went over the shoulder, caught it, spun on the wall.
- 16:50Speaker 3: The difficulty of making.
- 16:51Speaker 2: That play was insane, and that was a little bit
- 16:55Speaker 2: later in my career where You know, I wasn't playing
- 16:57Speaker 2: on a great Angels team, so I was playing center.
- 16:59Speaker 2: But a lot of people thought like my best days
- 17:02Speaker 2: of playing center field were behind me. So to be
- 17:04Speaker 2: able to do it a little bit later in my career,
- 17:06Speaker 2: make a play like that. And I was obviously on
- 17:09Speaker 2: a new team, right? I was the older guy with
- 17:11Speaker 2: a bunch of young guys. And, you know, they probably
- 17:13Speaker 2: had seen me make some of those plays earlier in
- 17:15Speaker 2: my career. To be able to like go back in
- 17:18Speaker 2: time and make a play was a cool feeling for me.
- 17:22Speaker 1: You're like, hey, Mike Trout, I can do this too, right?
- 17:25Speaker 3: I was like, Mike, did you see that? Did you
- 17:27Speaker 3: see it?
- 17:28Speaker 4: That's pretty good.
- 17:31Speaker 1: That's not too bad. How about playoff Kike? Can we
- 17:33Speaker 1: just have a moment here for Kike Hernandez and whatever
- 17:36Speaker 1: he does? I love the note during the broadcast that
- 17:39Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal said that his agent said they cryogenically freeze
- 17:42Speaker 1: him until September and then he just gets out there
- 17:44Speaker 1: and dies. is locked in. If there's no other guy,
- 17:48Speaker 1: I mean, hyperbaric chamber every day to come back from
- 17:51Speaker 1: that oblique tear that he's playing right now is remarkable,
- 17:55Speaker 1: much less hitting a home run here to give the
- 17:57Speaker 1: Braves the lead off of Chris Sale.
- 18:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, listen, he's been doing it for a
- 18:03Speaker 5: lot of years now, and it just seems like the goofiness,
- 18:06Speaker 5: the silliness, the funny side of him locks it in,
- 18:10Speaker 5: and then he becomes goofy, silly, and funny all over again.
- 18:13Speaker 4: What a swing.
- 18:14Speaker 5: He knew it was going right off the bat. It
- 18:15Speaker 5: was one pitch right there. It was just a flattened changeup.
- 18:19Speaker 5: It kind of came towards him instead of fading away.
- 18:22Speaker 5: That's what a right-hander loves to see. And if his
- 18:24Speaker 5: timing is right, which it was, you heard the noise
- 18:27Speaker 5: on TV. It was an absolute blast. And that's basically
- 18:30Speaker 5: what did him in right there. They kind of took
- 18:32Speaker 5: the wind out of Atlanta's sails right there, and they
- 18:34Speaker 5: couldn't find a way. Yamamoto was probably sitting there like, hmm,
- 18:38Speaker 5: thank you very much.
- 18:39Speaker 4: It's over now.
- 18:39Speaker 5: And that's basically what happened.
- 18:42Speaker 3: And.
- 18:43Speaker 5: I mean, he's batting last. It's just, it's incredible. You
- 18:46Speaker 5: put him in any thought in the lineup is really,
- 18:48Speaker 5: really remarkable. This guy's going to go down as one
- 18:50Speaker 5: of the most clutch hitters to ever do it in
- 18:52Speaker 5: playoff baseball.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it's pretty amazing when the Dodgers continually bring him
- 18:58Speaker 2: back and you're like, I.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Don't know where he's going to play.
- 19:01Speaker 2: And obviously he had injuries this year, but if healthy,
- 19:04Speaker 2: he probably wasn't going to play much this year. Like
- 19:06Speaker 2: you were literally paying this guy to keep the vibes
- 19:10Speaker 2: up during the regular season, check some boxes, get a
- 19:12Speaker 2: couple of bats, you know, fill in for some guys
- 19:15Speaker 2: when they need an off day. But when October comes around,
- 19:18Speaker 2: this guy is going to be probably your most important
- 19:20Speaker 2: hitter in your lineup because he's done it. The moment's
- 19:23Speaker 2: never too big for him. If I'm not mistaken too,
- 19:26Speaker 2: I think he is on his way to pass him
- 19:29Speaker 2: or had just passed Justin Turner for most postseason games
- 19:32Speaker 2: played by a Dodger in Dodger history, which speaks you
- 19:35Speaker 2: know to obviously his success in the postseason what he's
- 19:38Speaker 2: been able to do for that franchise but you know
- 19:40Speaker 2: we're talking about one of the most clutch postseason hitters
- 19:43Speaker 2: of all time and this is not a guy that
- 19:46Speaker 2: you would typically crown that title to you're thinking about
- 19:49Speaker 2: some of these players, the Derek Jeters and some of
- 19:52Speaker 2: these guys that have been in the postseason forever in
- 19:55Speaker 2: their career and were their best players on their team.
- 19:57Speaker 2: And then we talk about Kike Hernandez, a guy, like
- 20:00Speaker 2: I mentioned, who's probably going to be your 25th, 26th
- 20:03Speaker 2: man during the regular season. But sure enough, October shows
- 20:07Speaker 2: up and He was the biggest difference in the game,
- 20:09Speaker 2: and this is exactly what you're paying him for. You
- 20:12Speaker 2: know at some point, in order to get to where
- 20:14Speaker 2: you want to go to and win another World Series,
- 20:16Speaker 2: you're going to have to go through some elite left-handed pitching,
- 20:19Speaker 2: and there's no one better in the game in October
- 20:21Speaker 2: than hitting left-handed pitching than Kike Hernandez.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Yeah, Kike is absolutely a beast. But you know what, guys?
- 20:30Speaker 1: Vibes are important. You both know that. I mean, Todd Father,
- 20:32Speaker 1: you're a vibes guy on your teams. You got to
- 20:36Speaker 1: have someone to keep the clubhouse loose in those dog days.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I mean, this team is loaded with veterans. You got
- 20:41Speaker 1: to have a vibes guy. All right, full count. It
- 20:44Speaker 1: is fueled by Marathon, where fun runs on fuel. Save
- 20:48Speaker 1: up to $ 1 a gallon with Marathon Rewards.
- 20:52Speaker 6: Hey, when you get a chance, subscribe to Foul Territory
- 20:55Speaker 6: on YouTube. We are getting very close to 300,000 subscribers
- 21:00Speaker 6: on the channel and love all of them. It is
- 21:02Speaker 6: baseball the way it should be covered at Foul Territory.
- 21:05Speaker 4: Give us a sub.
- 21:05Speaker 1: All right, guys, we're going to get into our player
- 21:13Speaker 1: of the game discussion. It is player of the game
- 21:16Speaker 1: powered by MLB 9 innings 26. We're going to start
- 21:19Speaker 1: with you, KP. Who's your player of the game?
- 21:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I'm going to just lean towards a
- 21:25Speaker 2: hitter because that's what I did for a living, right?
- 21:28Speaker 2: It's hard to go against Yamamoto and what he did,
- 21:30Speaker 2: and he obviously deserves his flowers. You know, you're talking
- 21:33Speaker 2: about an historic matchup between two of the greatest pitchers,
- 21:37Speaker 2: you know, in the game right now, and for him
- 21:39Speaker 2: to go through this very tough lineup with the Braves.
- 21:44Speaker 2: And I kept thinking, I kept thinking, you know, obviously
- 21:47Speaker 2: you mentioned the 4-0 record on the road, which is
- 21:49Speaker 2: part of the reason, you know, they pushed him back
- 21:52Speaker 2: into the three spot, had him pitch on the road.
- 21:54Speaker 2: He's obviously very comfortable pitching on the road. But I
- 21:57Speaker 2: kept thinking the Braves had to face Tarek Skubal, Blake Snell,
- 22:00Speaker 2: all the lefties out of their bullpen. You felt like
- 22:03Speaker 2: They could have rolled anyone out there and Matt Olsen
- 22:06Speaker 2: and Drake Baldwin and Michael Harris were just going to be,
- 22:10Speaker 2: and Ozzie Alvarez hitting from the left side, were just
- 22:11Speaker 2: going to be like, thank God, anyone but a left-handed pitcher.
- 22:14Speaker 2: So I do want to shout out Yamamoto, but for me,
- 22:17Speaker 2: player of the game is Kike Hernandez. We just talked
- 22:19Speaker 2: about his greatness in October. And in a game like that,
- 22:23Speaker 2: when every pitch is so important, when you're facing the
- 22:26Speaker 2: game's best, to be locked in on an approach, to
- 22:29Speaker 2: get the one pitch you might get in that bat,
- 22:31Speaker 2: to hit a two-run homer was really all the Dodgers
- 22:33Speaker 2: ended up needing in this game.
- 22:34Speaker 3: So, to me, it's Kike Hernandez.
- 22:38Speaker 5: You kind of took both of them there. So, I mean,
- 22:40Speaker 5: who am I supposed to choose there? Jesus.
- 22:44Speaker 4: I think both of those guys both deserve it.
- 22:46Speaker 5: I would say Yamamoto just because he almost went the
- 22:50Speaker 5: distance and he was absolutely filthy. The 10 strikeouts, he
- 22:53Speaker 5: deserves all the flowers. If it's him not on the mound,
- 22:57Speaker 5: I think it's a totally different story. I would give
- 22:59Speaker 5: it to Yamamoto for sure.
- 23:02Speaker 1: All right, both of those guys were good stories. Both
- 23:04Speaker 1: those guys had great games. But you're missing the story.
- 23:08Speaker 1: As a broadcaster, it's Freddie Freeman. First postseason game back
- 23:12Speaker 1: in Atlanta since the 2021 World Series. And what does
- 23:15Speaker 1: he do? He nearly goes oppo to give him the
- 23:17Speaker 1: lead in, what was that, the third inning? that is
- 23:20Speaker 1: robbed of a home run so the next step out
- 23:22Speaker 1: he's pull side power he's sticking it in the seat
- 23:25Speaker 1: so we almost had two home runs he did have
- 23:27Speaker 1: one home run off of a lefty chris sale he
- 23:30Speaker 1: said hey facing the lefty and chris sale he said
- 23:32Speaker 1: you got to be prepared to die you've got to
- 23:35Speaker 1: hang in there we love postseason freddie he's another guy
- 23:39Speaker 1: who always seems to turn it up when the lights
- 23:41Speaker 1: shine the brightest i mean we all remember his grand
- 23:43Speaker 1: slam in the world series against the yankees and then
- 23:46Speaker 1: running over to his dad like he has got a
- 23:48Speaker 1: knack for the moment in the postseason. And I love it.
- 23:52Speaker 1: And he did all that with the Braves fans booing him,
- 23:56Speaker 1: booing a guy who bled for that organization, who cried
- 24:00Speaker 1: because he wanted to come back to that organization. But
- 24:03Speaker 1: they said, yeah, see you later. We're not going to
- 24:05Speaker 1: give you what you want. Instead, we're going to go
- 24:06Speaker 1: sign Matt Olsen and we're going to let you go
- 24:08Speaker 1: to the Dodgers where Freddie has seen quite a bit
- 24:11Speaker 1: of success. What do you guys think about the Braves
- 24:13Speaker 1: fans booing Freddie tonight?
- 24:16Speaker 5: It's about time. Like, come on, man. Let's go here.
- 24:20Speaker 5: He was there a while ago.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Good for him. But listen, they want to win. Come on.
- 24:24Speaker 4: There's nothing wrong with that. I'm sure they'd give him
- 24:26Speaker 4: a big hug afterwards. Let's go.
- 24:28Speaker 5: And a couple of boos. Goes to show if you're
- 24:30Speaker 5: a Braves player, like, all right, yeah, let's go. We
- 24:33Speaker 5: love them off the field, but right now, let's get
- 24:35Speaker 5: on them.
- 24:37Speaker 3: I couldn't agree more.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Obviously, he's going to be beloved as an Atlanta Brave
- 24:43Speaker 2: when his career is all said and done. He's going
- 24:45Speaker 2: to go down as a Dodger and an Atlanta Brave,
- 24:47Speaker 2: and they're going to put him in the Hall of Fame.
- 24:50Speaker 2: He's going to be that type of player, but time
- 24:53Speaker 2: to turn the page.
- 24:54Speaker 3: This is war. This is battle. They want the Braves
- 24:57Speaker 3: to win. Time has passed.
- 24:59Speaker 2: You've got to boo the guy, but when the career
- 25:01Speaker 2: is all said and done, Freddie will be embraced back
- 25:03Speaker 2: in Atlanta. with some of the great players that ever
- 25:06Speaker 2: put a uniform on. So good on the Braves fans
- 25:08Speaker 2: for doing that.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Yeah, do it in the regular season. That's where it's for.
- 25:11Speaker 4: That's fine.
- 25:14Speaker 1: All right, well, we've got a game four. Braves need
- 25:16Speaker 1: to win this one or their season is done. It's
- 25:20Speaker 1: a battle of the Tylers, Tyler Glasnow versus Tyler Malley.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Your guys' thoughts on that matchup? Who has the upper hand?
- 25:30Speaker 5: I would say the Dodgers again. Yeah, I would say
- 25:32Speaker 5: the Dodgers. I love glass now on the mound. I
- 25:34Speaker 5: like what he does when he's healthy. He's one of
- 25:36Speaker 5: the most fiercest pitchers. They're one of the best breaking
- 25:39Speaker 5: pitches you'll ever see. Momentum has shifted. It definitely has.
- 25:44Speaker 5: And it's one of those where Tyler Mallory, don't get
- 25:47Speaker 5: me wrong. He's had a resurgence this year, but Tyler
- 25:50Speaker 5: glass now is a guy in the mound that they're
- 25:52Speaker 5: going to look forward to another big piece as they
- 25:54Speaker 5: move forward in winning and you're trying to win another
- 25:57Speaker 5: world series.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I would say coming into this game
- 26:02Speaker 2: is like the Braves did everything they needed to do
- 26:05Speaker 2: to go steal one in L.A., knowing you had Chris
- 26:08Speaker 2: Sale on the mound. You were almost counting your chickens
- 26:11Speaker 2: before they hatched. Not to say Yamamoto was going to
- 26:13Speaker 2: be easy to beat, but the fact that they were
- 26:15Speaker 2: able to beat Sale, Yamamoto outpitched him, and then you
- 26:19Speaker 2: now turning to Tyler Glass now on any given day
- 26:22Speaker 2: could be the best pitcher in the Dodgers rotation, which
- 26:25Speaker 2: is already historically one of the best rotations ever. You know,
- 26:29Speaker 2: the only concern I have for Tyler Glassnow is he
- 26:31Speaker 2: didn't pitch a ton this year. He can get a
- 26:33Speaker 2: little bit wild with his command, but the Dodgers are
- 26:35Speaker 2: also playing with house money right now. They're up in
- 26:38Speaker 2: this series. You know, they have with Yamamoto going deep
- 26:41Speaker 2: into that game, they have a fresh bullpen. So if
- 26:43Speaker 2: Tyler Glassnow could be in the strike zone, be effective,
- 26:47Speaker 2: throw his high velocity fastball, nasty curveball, you've got to
- 26:51Speaker 2: love your chances with Tyler Glassnow. But on the other side,
- 26:53Speaker 2: Tyler Mallee, has been unbelievable since coming over from San Francisco.
- 26:57Speaker 2: His first postseason outing was great, but if I had
- 27:01Speaker 2: to choose who's got the upper hand, the momentum has
- 27:04Speaker 2: clearly shifted to the Dodgers side. Once again, we're talking
- 27:07Speaker 2: about Tyler Glass now, kind of the forgotten guy in
- 27:10Speaker 2: that rotation who could be a number one on a
- 27:12Speaker 2: lot of different teams. He just happens to be pitching
- 27:14Speaker 2: game four for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I was just going to say that Dave Roberts
- 27:20Speaker 1: said you can go any order with their pitchers and
- 27:23Speaker 1: glass now would be a number one on many rotations.
- 27:25Speaker 1: And here he is going game for one note about Acuna.
- 27:28Speaker 1: He was the DH tonight. And what I said before
- 27:31Speaker 1: the game that he had him DH because his knee
- 27:34Speaker 1: has been giving him some trouble. He's not a hundred percent.
- 27:36Speaker 1: That's why they didn't have him play the outfield. They
- 27:39Speaker 1: don't know the plan for tomorrow, but there's a chance
- 27:41Speaker 1: he doesn't play in the outfield again tomorrow that weakens them.
- 27:44Speaker 1: obviously defensively, but you have to wonder if that's affecting
- 27:47Speaker 1: him at the plate. Obviously it would be affecting him
- 27:49Speaker 1: on the bases. If it's the, if it's the, I mean,
- 27:50Speaker 1: he had the poor guy with his knees, cannot catch
- 27:52Speaker 1: a break here. But we've got to move on here.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Game-changing swings, momentum, shifting pitches, trout at the plate, Kershaw
- 28:01Speaker 1: on the mound and the new generation of fireballers led
- 28:04Speaker 1: by Paul Skeens. Prove your stats. Experience perfect contact and
- 28:08Speaker 1: clutch moments like never before in MLB 9 Innings 26.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Go to your phone's app store today to download MLB
- 28:14Speaker 1: 9 Innings 26. Here is a quick word from MLB
- 28:17Speaker 1: 9 Innings 26, and then we'll be right back with
- 28:20Speaker 1: our final thoughts.
- 28:22Speaker 3: He's ready now to pitch.
- 28:24Speaker 4: Strikeout swinging.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Strikeout number one for Persia.
- 28:34Speaker 5: Hey!
- 28:35Speaker 3: Can you keep it down? Some of us are still
- 28:37Speaker 3: trying to work.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Sorry, Mike.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Our bad. Guys, a note for the Padres here. The
- 28:57Speaker 1: Padres are really using that paternity list this postseason. They
- 29:01Speaker 1: had Walker Bueller hit the paternity list earlier. He's back now.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Mason Miller was just put on the paternity list after
- 29:07Speaker 1: that excruciating ninth inning to watch if you're a Padres
- 29:11Speaker 1: fan the other day. So we'll keep an eye on
- 29:13Speaker 1: that for the Padres.
- 29:15Speaker 4: Hey, nothing better than a child. Nothing wrong with that
- 29:20Speaker 4: at all.
- 29:22Speaker 2: No, obviously tough timing, but I think any person is going–
- 29:29Speaker 2: if those are the two choices you have, hey, I
- 29:30Speaker 2: need to close out a game or go be there
- 29:32Speaker 2: for my wife to watch the birth of my child,
- 29:34Speaker 2: it's a very easy decision that he's got to do it.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Unfortunate timing, but he's making the right decision.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Decision.
- 29:40Speaker 3: He's got to do what he's got to do.
- 29:43Speaker 1: It's a tough one. Max Reed has said that he
- 29:46Speaker 1: is not going to go on the paternity list. His
- 29:49Speaker 1: significant other is due to give birth any day now.
- 29:51Speaker 1: He is going to pitch for the Yankees tomorrow. But
- 29:54Speaker 1: with Mason Miller, it's an interesting discussion because over the
- 29:57Speaker 1: last two days, all you've heard is he was tipping
- 30:00Speaker 1: his pitches. I want to get your thoughts really quickly
- 30:02Speaker 1: on Mason Miller. Do you think he was tipping? I
- 30:05Speaker 1: know Brzezinski did the game. He said he didn't think
- 30:07Speaker 1: he was.
- 30:08Speaker 4: K.P.
- 30:11Speaker 2: I think sometimes you're so great in this game. You've
- 30:14Speaker 2: had so much success that the only logical reason for
- 30:17Speaker 2: you not to have your a game and not.
- 30:19Speaker 3: Be successful is tip tip tipping your pitches.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Um, I didn't see anything. Obviously I didn't study it
- 30:25Speaker 2: the same way. AJ was at the game and was
- 30:27Speaker 2: trying to look at it. I've seen the stuff online,
- 30:29Speaker 2: but I, is it possible?
- 30:31Speaker 4: Sure.
- 30:32Speaker 2: But I don't think he was, I just think the
- 30:33Speaker 2: Brewers had a very good approach against them.
- 30:36Speaker 3: The Brewers didn't win 103 games by accident.
- 30:40Speaker 5: Uh, him spitting on that slider, uh, cheerio that made
- 30:44Speaker 5: you wonder a little bit. I mean, looking out at
- 30:46Speaker 5: second base, I saw the view from behind home plate.
- 30:49Speaker 4: What's his name? Who was on second base? He did
- 30:51Speaker 4: something with his hand.
- 30:52Speaker 5: Touching South Freelick. I, I am, I'm very skeptical about
- 30:57Speaker 5: that because a lot of guys are swinging at that.
- 31:00Speaker 5: And most of the guys, they, I think they did
- 31:02Speaker 5: a stat about how many times they swung at that pitch.
- 31:05Speaker 5: And it was a really good amount. I don't have
- 31:07Speaker 5: the exact number, so I don't want to sound silly,
- 31:09Speaker 5: but it looked like he was on that slider and
- 31:12Speaker 5: that thing from behind was filthy. I, I, it makes
- 31:16Speaker 5: you wonder a little bit.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I do love Pat Murphy's comments. He said, yep.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Yep.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Maybe we picked up on something or maybe we're just deking.
- 31:23Speaker 1: You never know. He's such a games guy. I, I
- 31:27Speaker 1: absolutely love that from him. And, uh, Either way, Mason
- 31:31Speaker 1: Miller going to be with his wife for the birth
- 31:33Speaker 1: of their child. So good luck and congratulations to them.
