- 0:05Speaker 1: Cardinal Burke, welcome back for day two.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Good to be back.
- 0:10Speaker 1: It was a much better night last night.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Good, thanks be to God.
- 0:14Speaker 1: So yesterday we spent all day going over the Old
- 0:19Speaker 1: Testament and a brief overview of it. And today we
- 0:25Speaker 1: will be going over the New Testament. Brief overview again.
- 0:30Speaker 1: So thank you again for coming.
- 0:34Speaker 2: You're welcome.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Start you off with the same introduction as yesterday, just
- 0:39Speaker 1: in case anybody didn't hear it. Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke.
- 0:43Speaker 1: You're an American Cardinal widely respected for your expertise in
- 0:46Speaker 1: canon law and church governance. You previously served as Archbishop
- 0:50Speaker 1: of St. Louis and Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, the
- 0:54Speaker 1: church's highest judicial court. Pope Benedict XVI elevated you to
- 0:59Speaker 1: the College of Cardinals in 2010. You are known internationally
- 1:03Speaker 1: for your defense of traditional Catholic doctrine and sacred liturgy, marriage, family,
- 1:09Speaker 1: and the sacraments. You also are the founder of the
- 1:13Speaker 1: Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wisconsin,
- 1:18Speaker 1: which you established as a place of pilgrimage, prayer, and
- 1:21Speaker 1: spiritual renewal. Once again, welcome. Welcome today, too.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Thank you very much.
- 1:27Speaker 1: And so before we get started, I was just hoping
- 1:31Speaker 1: we could start in prayer again.
- 1:34Speaker 2: In the name of the Father, and of the Son,
- 1:36Speaker 2: and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Almighty God, we ask
- 1:40Speaker 2: your blessing upon our conversation today as we seek to
- 1:45Speaker 2: understand more deeply your holy word transmitted to us in
- 1:51Speaker 2: the Holy Bible, in the sacred scriptures. and most especially
- 1:56Speaker 2: in the New Testament, the account of the fullness of
- 2:00Speaker 2: the revelation of your love for us in our Lord
- 2:03Speaker 2: Jesus Christ. We ask you to grant us great wisdom
- 2:10Speaker 2: in understanding everything that you wish to teach us through
- 2:14Speaker 2: the Holy Scriptures. And we ask this in the name
- 2:18Speaker 2: of our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who is with
- 2:21Speaker 2: you in the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.
- 2:26Speaker 2: In the name of the Father, and of the Son,
- 2:28Speaker 2: and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
- 2:33Speaker 1: So the New Testament. So we left off yesterday with,
- 2:38Speaker 1: I think we kind of left off with some covenants
- 2:43Speaker 1: that weren't yet fulfilled in the Old Testament. But I
- 2:48Speaker 1: think that the biggest, most controversial question about the Old
- 2:53Speaker 1: Testament is, Did Jesus resurrect from the dead? Seems to
- 2:58Speaker 1: be the ongoing argument and basically the overall arc of
- 3:07Speaker 1: the New Testament. So where do we begin?
- 3:12Speaker 2: Well, the resurrection is first of all testified to by
- 3:19Speaker 2: a host of witnesses. We have the four gospels. which
- 3:25Speaker 2: all have an account of the resurrection of our Lord
- 3:28Speaker 2: and of his appearance for 40 days after his resurrection
- 3:33Speaker 2: in his resurrected body, in his glorious body, before his
- 3:38Speaker 2: ascension to heaven, to the right hand of the Father.
- 3:42Speaker 2: And these accounts are historical. All the claims that have
- 3:53Speaker 2: made have been made to question the historicity of the
- 3:56Speaker 2: Gospels have been proven to be false. And there are
- 4:06Speaker 2: other arguments apart from the direct testimony that we receive
- 4:12Speaker 2: in the Gospels. The fact of the empty tomb of
- 4:18Speaker 2: our Lord and there is.
- 4:21Speaker 2: His tomb was found completely empty. His body had been
- 4:24Speaker 2: completely transformed, and there are no relics of our Lord
- 4:32Speaker 2: Jesus in the sense of hair or bones or anything,
- 4:37Speaker 2: because he was glorified in his whole body at his resurrection,
- 4:45Speaker 2: and he now is at the right hand of the
- 4:47Speaker 2: Father in his glorified body. see too many other testimonies
- 4:55Speaker 2: to the resurrection. One of the most striking ones is
- 4:57Speaker 2: the conversion of St. Paul. Paul was a Pharisee, a
- 5:04Speaker 2: very ardent Jew who persecuted aggressively the church and believers.
- 5:13Speaker 2: He was present at the stoning to death of St.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Stephen the first martyr, the St. Stephen the Deacon. The
- 5:24Speaker 2: account tells us that the people who were stoning him,
- 5:27Speaker 2: throwing the stones that killed him, laid their garments at
- 5:30Speaker 2: the foot of a young man named Saul. St. Paul's
- 5:33Speaker 2: name was Saul, and after his conversion, he became known
- 5:38Speaker 2: as Paul. And he was on his way to persecute
- 5:45Speaker 2: the church further, had... authorization to bring Christians into court
- 5:53Speaker 2: for their condemnation when he was thrown from his horse.
- 5:59Speaker 2: And the Lord spoke to him, appeared to him, and
- 6:04Speaker 2: said to him, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?
- 6:07Speaker 2: And then he asked, and our Lord said, well, you're
- 6:13Speaker 2: persecuting me and my members and those who are part
- 6:17Speaker 2: of my mystical body and at that instructed him to
- 6:22Speaker 2: go to Damascus where he would find a Christian who
- 6:31Speaker 2: would help him to be baptized and at that he
- 6:38Speaker 2: was blind from the moment of the apparition and as
- 6:42Speaker 2: soon as he was baptized something like scales fell from
- 6:46Speaker 2: his eyes and he could see again and he becomes
- 6:49Speaker 2: the great teacher of the faith. His letters in the
- 6:56Speaker 2: New Testament are just an incredible treasure of teaching about
- 7:01Speaker 2: the true nature of our Lord, the salvation. He's won
- 7:06Speaker 2: for us what this means for us. He has, too,
- 7:09Speaker 2: the oldest account of the institution of the Holy Eucharist
- 7:13Speaker 2: because he had encountered in Corinth where he was teaching
- 7:17Speaker 2: the faith the people were abusing the celebration of the Eucharist,
- 7:22Speaker 2: using it as a time to eat and drink in
- 7:25Speaker 2: excess and so forth, and not paying attention to the
- 7:29Speaker 2: heart of the Eucharist, which is the renewal of the
- 7:33Speaker 2: Lord's Supper. And so St. Paul, in confronting them, said,
- 7:39Speaker 2: I hand unto you that which I have first received,
- 7:43Speaker 2: that our Lord on the night before I died, and
- 7:45Speaker 2: then he gives the whole account of the And then
- 7:48Speaker 2: says in very clear language, he said, he who eats
- 7:52Speaker 2: and drinks the body and blood of our Lord without
- 7:55Speaker 2: recognizing our Lord, eats and drinks his own condemnation. In
- 7:59Speaker 2: other words, to approach sacrilegiously the Holy Eucharist is a
- 8:06Speaker 2: most grievous sin. But anyway, that's another proof is St. Paul,
- 8:12Speaker 2: the miracle of his writings and teachings. and the whole
- 8:17Speaker 2: way in which the church went. The apostles, when our
- 8:23Speaker 2: Lord was crucified, all but John fled, and Peter even
- 8:27Speaker 2: denied our Lord three times when he was in the... Peter,
- 8:31Speaker 2: our Lord, was being questioned. He was warming himself at
- 8:35Speaker 2: a fire, and people said, weren't you also one of his?
- 8:39Speaker 2: You speak like a Galilean. Our Lord was from Galilee.
- 8:43Speaker 2: And he denied that he... He knew our Lord. And
- 8:48Speaker 2: with our Lord's apparitions after his resurrection and then after
- 8:54Speaker 2: he ascended to the right hand of the Father and
- 8:58Speaker 2: sent the Holy Spirit, these apostles who were also fearful,
- 9:02Speaker 2: they were hiding in the upper room, afraid to be arrested.
- 9:08Speaker 2: They went out and boldly proclaimed the gospel, and all
- 9:11Speaker 2: of them were martyrs. except St. John, but St. John,
- 9:15Speaker 2: of course, gave us a most wonderful account of our
- 9:22Speaker 2: Lord in his gospel. And he was the one who
- 9:25Speaker 2: took the Blessed Mother into his home after our Lord's death.
- 9:30Speaker 2: And he had very privileged knowledge of our Lord because
- 9:35Speaker 2: our Blessed Mother would have recounted to him. She lived
- 9:38Speaker 2: several years afterwards, would have recounted to him so many
- 9:41Speaker 2: things about our Lord. Some too claim that the Gospels
- 9:49Speaker 2: were written very late, but there's evidence now that they
- 9:53Speaker 2: were written very close to the time after our Lord died.
- 9:58Speaker 2: It wasn't something that was written a century or so later.
- 10:03Speaker 1: What is the evidence?
- 10:04Speaker 2: The evidence is done to study the manuscripts, because we
- 10:08Speaker 2: have manuscripts of the Gospels, and then also a study
- 10:14Speaker 2: of the accounts themselves and comparing them with other writings
- 10:19Speaker 2: of the same time, and they're able to fix the
- 10:23Speaker 2: date much earlier.
- 10:25Speaker 1: So they were written less than a century?
- 10:29Speaker 2: Yes, they were written less than a century after our
- 10:33Speaker 2: Lord died. They were written in that period after his death,
- 10:39Speaker 2: when the initial preaching of the gospel, because we must remember, too,
- 10:45Speaker 2: that in those times and in that culture, People were
- 10:48Speaker 2: accustomed to memorize long accounts, and very accurately so. There
- 10:55Speaker 2: was what was called the oral tradition, and people would
- 10:59Speaker 2: hand on long accounts of things that had happened, and
- 11:02Speaker 2: this was true also, of course, with the apostles and
- 11:05Speaker 2: the disciples of our Lord. And with that, then, the
- 11:12Speaker 2: Gospels were written. There are four Gospels, as you know,
- 11:15Speaker 2: and the Three of them are called synoptic because they're
- 11:18Speaker 2: very similar. St. John's is distinct in that it has
- 11:24Speaker 2: a much more elaborate theological presentation of our Lord. And
- 11:31Speaker 2: that isn't because it was later. It simply was a
- 11:36Speaker 2: particular gift that he had, especially being the Lord's beloved
- 11:42Speaker 2: disciple and also taking the care of his his mother.
- 11:48Speaker 2: So from these oral traditions, then people began to write
- 11:53Speaker 2: down these accounts. And many of the accounts, for instance,
- 11:56Speaker 2: in the Synoptic Gospels are exactly the same with the
- 12:03Speaker 2: accounts of healings, miracles, parables. Some you find in one gospel,
- 12:14Speaker 2: you don't find in another. But that shouldn't surprise us
- 12:18Speaker 2: that one gospel writer would have taken down an account
- 12:22Speaker 2: that perhaps another one did not, depending on who their
- 12:25Speaker 2: sources were.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Was any of this written down as a journal, an
- 12:35Speaker 1: ongoing journal during the life of Christ?
- 12:38Speaker 2: There would have been. People would have been writing down
- 12:43Speaker 2: his sayings. And I suppose to a certain extent, we hear,
- 12:51Speaker 2: for instance, when he hears people, that the people all
- 12:59Speaker 2: were in wonderment about what he did. And one can
- 13:05Speaker 2: imagine that somebody would have written down then an account
- 13:09Speaker 2: of this healing of the, for instance, of the woman
- 13:12Speaker 2: who had had hemorrhage for 30 years and She just
- 13:17Speaker 2: touched the hem of his garment and she was healed
- 13:23Speaker 2: because she had strong faith. She believed that he could
- 13:25Speaker 2: heal her. Then he cured the son of the servant
- 13:32Speaker 2: of the centurion. That account, that's a very, an account
- 13:38Speaker 2: that's remembered every day at Mass because when the centurion
- 13:43Speaker 2: came to ask our Lord to come to heal his
- 13:49Speaker 2: son or servant, our Lord said, well, come and do it.
- 13:55Speaker 2: And he said, no, I'm not worthy that you should
- 13:58Speaker 2: enter under my roof. Just say the word. All you
- 14:01Speaker 2: have to do is say the word and my son
- 14:06Speaker 2: will be healed. And indeed, that's what happened. Our Lord
- 14:13Speaker 2: recognized his strong faith And he assured him, your son
- 14:18Speaker 2: is healed. And the centurion on his way home met
- 14:22Speaker 2: some of his servants who told him that it was
- 14:25Speaker 2: exactly at the hour that he met our Lord that
- 14:30Speaker 2: the healing took place. So the Gospels are simply rich
- 14:36Speaker 2: with all of these accounts. And I mentioned this latest
- 14:42Speaker 2: translation with such ample notes. But there are also studies
- 14:46Speaker 2: of each of the Gospels, and they are, there's just
- 14:54Speaker 2: a richness there, and the Gospels are historically authentic. There's also,
- 15:04Speaker 2: he's an expert in philosophy, an Aristotle layman by the
- 15:09Speaker 2: name of Michael Pekalik. He teaches at the Catholic University
- 15:14Speaker 2: of America, but he He's very knowledgeable in Greek, the
- 15:19Speaker 2: language in which the Gospels were written. And he has
- 15:24Speaker 2: written a new translation also with a commentary. He did
- 15:32Speaker 2: the one on St. John already, drawing especially to our
- 15:37Speaker 2: attention content in St. John's Gospel that reflects his relationship
- 15:44Speaker 2: with the Virgin Mary. And he's done also the commentary
- 15:50Speaker 2: on St. Matthew entitled God's Banker because St. Matthew was
- 15:56Speaker 2: a tax collector. And then also the commentary, I believe
- 16:03Speaker 2: it's on St. Mark because of his, or is it Luke?
- 16:07Speaker 2: I'm sorry, I'm not certain about that. But I think he'll,
- 16:11Speaker 2: I think he'll, He'll have one on all four Gospels,
- 16:14Speaker 2: but I recommend them very highly. As you know, unless
- 16:20Speaker 2: you read Greek, you're always relying on a translation, and
- 16:23Speaker 2: translations are more or less accurate. But his translation, it's
- 16:30Speaker 2: new and fresh, but it's very faithful.
- 16:36Speaker 1: If you're like me, health and wellness is extremely important

- 18:54Speaker 1: I wanted to just kind of do a brief overview of...
- 19:00Speaker 1: the New Testament? How many books are there?
- 19:02Speaker 2: There are 27 books in the New Testament. There are
- 19:07Speaker 2: the four gospels, and then there are what are called
- 19:11Speaker 2: the epistles or the letters of St. Paul. And then
- 19:15Speaker 2: there are what are called the Catholic epistles. And those
- 19:22Speaker 2: are letters of St. Peter, two letters of St. Peter, St.
- 19:29Speaker 2: James a letter, St. Jude a letter, and three letters
- 19:33Speaker 2: of St. John. And sometimes, too, they distinguish. In St. Paul,
- 19:40Speaker 2: you have these large letters that are written to a
- 19:48Speaker 2: whole group, the letter to the Romans, two letters to
- 19:51Speaker 2: the Corinthians, two letters to the Thessalonians, the Colossians, the
- 19:56Speaker 2: people of Colossae. But then there are what are called
- 19:59Speaker 2: the pastoral epistles, and those he wrote to St. Timothy
- 20:04Speaker 2: and St. Titus, who were early bishops, to instruct them
- 20:08Speaker 2: on how to be good bishops. And they're really quite
- 20:10Speaker 2: wonderful meditations for our bishop today. And then the conclusion
- 20:21Speaker 2: of the Bible is the Book of Revelation, or what's
- 20:24Speaker 2: called the Apocalypse. And this is a vision that St.
- 20:28Speaker 2: John has his gospel. He has three letters. And then
- 20:31Speaker 2: the Apocalypse is a vision he had while living on
- 20:34Speaker 2: the island of Patmos. And it's a vision of the
- 20:39Speaker 2: final times. And it's probably one of the most challenging
- 20:46Speaker 2: books of the Bible to read, to understand, but also
- 20:51Speaker 2: very beautiful because he describes eternal life as a wedding feast,
- 21:00Speaker 2: the wedding feast of the Lamb of Jesus, the Lamb
- 21:03Speaker 2: of God. And it's... And finally, on the last day,
- 21:11Speaker 2: our Lord restores everything to the Father. You were asking yesterday,
- 21:18Speaker 2: why did God permit our Lord to undergo what he
- 21:25Speaker 2: underwent and other sufferings? And that is because we live
- 21:29Speaker 2: in this time. The victory has been won by our
- 21:33Speaker 2: Lord Jesus Christ. but now it must be realized in
- 21:36Speaker 2: each of our lives. And as St. Paul said, we
- 21:40Speaker 2: have to fill out in our lives the sufferings of
- 21:43Speaker 2: Christ as his members. If we're living members of our
- 21:48Speaker 2: Lord Jesus Christ, that means that, yes, we enjoy all
- 21:52Speaker 2: the hope and confidence of the final victory, but we
- 21:59Speaker 2: also share in the suffering until that day comes. when
- 22:04Speaker 2: our Lord returns in glory and restores everything to the Father.
- 22:08Speaker 2: And saying that the apocalypse merits our reading, it's just
- 22:15Speaker 2: more difficult, a little more challenging to read. And that
- 22:19Speaker 2: completes then the New Testament.
- 22:23Speaker 1: So if the books were written even close to a
- 22:31Speaker 1: century later, How long were people living back then? How
- 22:37Speaker 1: do we know those accounts were so accurate if they
- 22:41Speaker 1: were not written during the time of Jesus?
- 22:45Speaker 2: Because they're handed on from those who did, who knew
- 22:51Speaker 2: our Lord. Well, St. Luke, for instance, he was not
- 22:58Speaker 2: one of the apostles, but he knew... our Lord, and
- 23:02Speaker 2: he knew the apostles, and so he was able to have.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Access to all this. Okay, extract the knowledge.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Exactly. And all of the writers, well, of course, a
- 23:16Speaker 2: good part of the New Testament is the writings of St. John,
- 23:20Speaker 2: whereas also St. Luke not only wrote his gospel, but
- 23:24Speaker 2: he wrote the Acts of the Apostles. Well, I'm sorry,
- 23:27Speaker 2: there I was deficient when I was describing the books
- 23:32Speaker 2: of the New Testament. They're the four gospels. And then
- 23:35Speaker 2: before the epistles of St. Paul are the Acts of
- 23:38Speaker 2: the Apostles, a very important book. It's the account of
- 23:41Speaker 2: the first years of the church's life. And that is
- 23:46Speaker 2: written by St. Luke. And then there we find, for instance,
- 23:54Speaker 2: the accounts of Paul's journeys. After being a persecutor of
- 23:58Speaker 2: the church, he... was converted, became, we call him the
- 24:02Speaker 2: Apostle of the Nations, but he traveled all the inhabited
- 24:06Speaker 2: world at that time, a good part of it, preaching
- 24:11Speaker 2: the gospel, and that's why you have, and then finally
- 24:14Speaker 2: ended his days in Rome.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Where did the New Testament start?
- 24:19Speaker 2: The New Testament starts in the Holy Land, in Judea
- 24:25Speaker 2: and Galilee, and, well... Nazareth, Bethlehem, uh, uh, well, Nazareth
- 24:35Speaker 2: and our lady receives the announcement that she's to be
- 24:40Speaker 2: the mother of the Savior. She conceives in her womb, uh,
- 24:44Speaker 2: the God, the Son, and he unites his divine nature
- 24:49Speaker 2: to our human nature, taking human flesh from her, the
- 24:54Speaker 2: Father being the Holy Spirit or the overshadowing of the
- 24:56Speaker 2: Holy Spirit. And then, uh, birth of our Lord in
- 25:01Speaker 2: Bethlehem in Judea, but then in Nazareth, the hidden life
- 25:09Speaker 2: of our Lord until he was 30, he was at
- 25:12Speaker 2: home with the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph. We have
- 25:17Speaker 2: a couple of accounts, for instance, of when he was 12,
- 25:20Speaker 2: they went for the annual pilgrimage to the temple, and
- 25:26Speaker 2: the That would be a big pilgrimage, all kinds of
- 25:31Speaker 2: relatives and so forth, and his parents thought that he
- 25:34Speaker 2: was with some relatives as they were heading back home,
- 25:37Speaker 2: and it turns out he wasn't, and they went back
- 25:42Speaker 2: to Jerusalem then, and they found him in the temple.
- 25:46Speaker 2: He was only 12 years old, but he was conversing
- 25:50Speaker 2: with the rabbis, the great doctors of the Jewish faith,
- 25:57Speaker 2: about the whole mystery of salvation. And it says that
- 26:01Speaker 2: they were astounded by his knowledge. Of course, he was
- 26:07Speaker 2: God the Son. But for the rest, when he was
- 26:14Speaker 2: 30 then, St. Luke recounts he went into the synagogue
- 26:21Speaker 2: and he opened the book of the prophet Isaiah. This
- 26:23Speaker 2: is another indication for us too about the power of
- 26:27Speaker 2: the word of God and he read the account of
- 26:33Speaker 2: the prophet Isaiah about the coming of the Messiah and
- 26:37Speaker 2: then he closed the parchment and said today this is
- 26:42Speaker 2: fulfilled in your midst in other words he identified himself
- 26:47Speaker 2: as the anointed of the Lord and then of course
- 26:53Speaker 2: He was baptized by St. John in the Jordan, and St.
- 26:57Speaker 2: John the Baptist announced to the people that this is
- 27:08Speaker 2: the one whom we've been awaiting. He says, I must
- 27:12Speaker 2: decrease because people were going to John in great numbers
- 27:16Speaker 2: because he was announcing the coming of the Messiah, the Savior.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Then when he baptized our Lord, he said, he must increase,
- 27:26Speaker 2: I must decrease. I'm not worthy to tie the strings
- 27:32Speaker 2: on his sandals. And then so said, behold, the Lamb
- 27:41Speaker 2: of God. And with that also is recalled every day
- 27:46Speaker 2: at Mass when the priest shows the host He says,
- 27:49Speaker 2: Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who takes away
- 27:52Speaker 2: the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to
- 27:55Speaker 2: the supper of the Lamb. In that text from the Mass,
- 28:00Speaker 2: we have from the Gospel, we also have the reference
- 28:04Speaker 2: to the book of the Apocalypse to Eternal Life. And
- 28:10Speaker 2: then we respond, Lord, I'm not worthy that you should
- 28:14Speaker 2: enter into my roof. Say but the word and my
- 28:17Speaker 2: soul shall be healed in the way of the the
- 28:19Speaker 2: gospel response of the centurion who recognizes in Jesus God
- 28:24Speaker 2: the Son incarnate.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Why did God have to send his only son?
- 28:32Speaker 2: This is the great mystery of his love for us. Obviously,
- 28:38Speaker 2: God can do all things, but how did he choose
- 28:43Speaker 2: to restore the plan that he had from the beginning?
- 28:50Speaker 2: When he created Adam and Eve, he wanted them to
- 28:55Speaker 2: be his co-workers, to be stewards of this wonderful creation,
- 28:59Speaker 2: Garden of Eden. And then they became proud, just like
- 29:07Speaker 2: we are today, no longer recognizing that we come from
- 29:10Speaker 2: the hand of God. We get the idea, oh, I'm
- 29:13Speaker 2: so high and mighty, either because of our talents or
- 29:16Speaker 2: money or whatever it might be, or power. People... So
- 29:20Speaker 2: they go off on their own. Well, Adam and Eve,
- 29:22Speaker 2: the serpent came along and said, oh, God told you
- 29:25Speaker 2: not to eat from that tree because he knows if
- 29:27Speaker 2: you eat from that tree, you'll become like him. Well,
- 29:30Speaker 2: why would they in the world, would they want to
- 29:32Speaker 2: become God? You know, that's, there's an act of pride.
- 29:37Speaker 2: They no longer want to be the son and daughter
- 29:40Speaker 2: of God, but they want to be God himself. And
- 29:42Speaker 2: so they fall for the trick and they sin. So
- 29:47Speaker 2: how does God choose to restore the friendship, which could
- 29:53Speaker 2: have done in a number of ways, but he does
- 29:57Speaker 2: it in this most marvelous way by coming himself sending
- 30:02Speaker 2: God the Son in our human nature to redeem it
- 30:08Speaker 2: so that we, by being incorporated in Christ, could share
- 30:13Speaker 2: that victory. So Christ wins the victory. He never committed
- 30:17Speaker 2: a sin. Our Lord, obviously, he's God the Son, but
- 30:21Speaker 2: he took all our sins upon himself and died for
- 30:28Speaker 2: them to restore our communion with God the Father And
- 30:32Speaker 2: so it's just this, it's pretty incomprehensible. We spend our
- 30:36Speaker 2: whole lives trying to understand how great God's love is
- 30:41Speaker 2: for us, that he would have his own son suffer
- 30:48Speaker 2: a really cruel passion and death. I'm sure you've probably
- 30:55Speaker 2: seen the Passion, Mel Gibson's film. He did a great
- 31:00Speaker 2: service because he brought out, sometimes people can have a
- 31:04Speaker 2: kind of sanitized understanding of the passion and death of
- 31:09Speaker 2: our Lord. But in that film, it shows how cruel
- 31:15Speaker 2: it was, the flagellations, the beatings, so much loss of blood,
- 31:23Speaker 2: the carrying of the cross, the crucifixion itself, which was
- 31:26Speaker 2: a horrible form of death. by asphyxiation. But in any case,
- 31:34Speaker 2: get back to the point. All of this was so
- 31:38Speaker 2: that we might finally get it through our thick skulls
- 31:42Speaker 2: how much God loves us, who we are, because he's
- 31:47Speaker 2: created us in his own image and likeness and therefore
- 31:53Speaker 2: has sent his son to give us the spiritual power
- 31:58Speaker 2: to overcome sin and death in our lives, to be
- 32:02Speaker 2: forever with him. And his great desire is that we
- 32:06Speaker 2: should be forever with him in the kingdom of heaven.
- 32:12Speaker 1: So if Christ was God the Son, it was God.
- 32:17Speaker 2: Yes.
- 32:19Speaker 1: And God is the beginning and the end and everything
- 32:22Speaker 1: in between. Exactly.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Did they have the same thoughts at the same time?
- 32:29Speaker 2: Yes.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Was it one mind?
- 32:33Speaker 2: Yes. There's a beautiful passage in the Gospels in which
- 32:36Speaker 2: our Lord prays that we might all be one as
- 32:40Speaker 2: he is one with the Father. And that is the
- 32:49Speaker 2: great mystery of redemption is that it is possible for
- 32:53Speaker 2: us with the help of God's grace to attain an
- 32:58Speaker 2: ever greater union of mind and heart with God himself
- 33:01Speaker 2: and to find, therefore, our perfect happiness. But our Lord himself,
- 33:10Speaker 2: as he was dying on the cross, he, first of all,
- 33:16Speaker 2: in the agony in the garden, he prayed to, it
- 33:20Speaker 2: was terrible. He saw what was coming. they say that
- 33:25Speaker 2: he was in such agony that he was sweating blood.
- 33:29Speaker 2: And he prayed to the Father to take the chalice
- 33:33Speaker 2: of his suffering away. But then he concluded the prayer,
- 33:36Speaker 2: but not my will, but thy will be done. And
- 33:41Speaker 2: so too, hanging on the cross, he cried out in
- 33:45Speaker 2: the words of the psalm, my God, my God, why
- 33:48Speaker 2: have you forsaken me? We see the agony there. Not
- 33:53Speaker 2: that he thought that the Father had forsaken him, but
- 33:55Speaker 2: that his suffering was so great that he cried out
- 33:59Speaker 2: in those words. But then he was at peace. He
- 34:05Speaker 2: gave us the Blessed Mother as our mother and breathed
- 34:11Speaker 2: his last. He said it's consummated. He had accomplished the
- 34:16Speaker 2: great work.
- 34:17Speaker 1: So he did have his own individual thoughts as well.
- 34:20Speaker 2: Oh, yes. Yes, well, he He had a human nature
- 34:26Speaker 2: linked to his divine nature, and while the divine nature
- 34:30Speaker 2: permitted him always to understand the Father's will and to
- 34:37Speaker 2: pursue relentlessly, and at various points in the Gospel, he
- 34:41Speaker 2: will say, I've come to do the will of the Father.
- 34:45Speaker 2: It's not I, but my Father. He's always referring us
- 34:50Speaker 2: to the Father himself, But he suffered in our human nature,
- 34:57Speaker 2: of course, and that would have led him to cry
- 35:01Speaker 2: out in those words of the scriptures, but at the
- 35:08Speaker 2: same time to accept his death.
- 35:20Speaker 1: So they shared thoughts and Christ had individual thoughts. Yes.
- 35:28Speaker 1: Is there any indications of when he knew he was
- 35:32Speaker 1: the Son of God?
- 35:34Speaker 2: We understand that he would have known that from the
- 35:37Speaker 2: very beginning, that even he's 12 years old, he's in
- 35:41Speaker 2: the temple. And when Mary and Joseph, Blessed Mother and St.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Joseph arrive, and she says to him, son, why have
- 35:51Speaker 2: you done this to us? My father and I have
- 35:53Speaker 2: been searching for you. Your father and I have been
- 35:56Speaker 2: searching you for three days. And he says to her,
- 36:00Speaker 2: did you not know that I must be in my
- 36:02Speaker 2: father's house? And this is clearly an indication of his
- 36:08Speaker 2: consciousness of who he was. Yes, with the true human nature,
- 36:15Speaker 2: but at the same time with a consciousness that came
- 36:18Speaker 2: from his divine nature of being incarnate to carry out
- 36:24Speaker 2: a mission. And, of course, he shows God's love throughout
- 36:32Speaker 2: his public ministry in words and deeds. We say in
- 36:39Speaker 2: the parables, these wonderful teachings, for instance, the parable of
- 36:44Speaker 2: the good shepherd of the prodigal son. He teaches us
- 36:47Speaker 2: always about God's infinite love and mercy, his justice, but
- 36:52Speaker 2: a justice which desires to be fulfilled in his great
- 37:00Speaker 2: act of love, but also in the deeds and the miracles.
- 37:05Speaker 2: We see, for instance, a wonderful miracle of the feeding
- 37:09Speaker 2: of the 5,000 and a prefigurement of the Holy Eucharist.
- 37:16Speaker 2: I mentioned about the healing of the of the woman
- 37:20Speaker 2: who had suffered for so many years of the hemorrhage,
- 37:23Speaker 2: the healing of the man born blind, this wonderful account
- 37:26Speaker 2: in St. John's Gospel. But there are any number of
- 37:33Speaker 2: these miracles which are, we could say this, that the
- 37:38Speaker 2: truth announced in the teaching then is actuated in the
- 37:47Speaker 2: goodness of the of all his actions, always healing, restoring people.
- 37:52Speaker 2: Of course, even more importantly, freeing people from demons. We
- 37:58Speaker 2: find this in the gospel that the people who in
- 38:03Speaker 2: some way had been, Satan had taken hold of them.
- 38:06Speaker 2: They encountered our Lord. They immediately knew that he had
- 38:12Speaker 2: power over them. He was God. And so they're various accounts, too,
- 38:17Speaker 2: of where our Lord freed individuals from the demons. And always, too,
- 38:26Speaker 2: when he was going to heal someone or save them,
- 38:32Speaker 2: he always said, your sins are forgiven, and that this
- 38:37Speaker 2: is the most important healing is of our sins forgiven.
- 38:40Speaker 2: And then he also then healed them physically. But The count,
- 38:45Speaker 2: for instance, of the woman caught in adultery. The adultery
- 38:51Speaker 2: in the Jewish religion was punished by being stoned, by
- 38:57Speaker 2: being put to death. And so he finds the people
- 39:04Speaker 2: ready to stone this woman who had been caught in adultery.
- 39:08Speaker 2: And he says that he was without sin through the
- 39:12Speaker 2: first stone. And the people all reflect on that and
- 39:17Speaker 2: they gradually, they're all gone. It's just him with the woman.
- 39:22Speaker 2: And he says to her, is there no one here
- 39:26Speaker 2: to accuse you? And she said, no, Lord. And he said,
- 39:31Speaker 2: go thy way, but sin no more. In other words,
- 39:34Speaker 2: he saved her from being stoned, but at the same
- 39:39Speaker 2: time instructed her very clearly that she should stop a
- 39:44Speaker 2: life of adulterous behavior.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Would you say that does the New Testament make the
- 40:03Speaker 1: Old Testament's rules obsolete? Is this a new way to live? No.
- 40:11Speaker 2: The New Testament brings to fulfillment everything that is taught
- 40:17Speaker 2: and everything that happened in the Old Testament. finds its fulfillment,
- 40:22Speaker 2: that that's not a cancellation. Our Lord himself said in
- 40:26Speaker 2: the Sermon on the Mount, do not think that I
- 40:29Speaker 2: have come to abolish the law and the prophets. That
- 40:32Speaker 2: would be a way of referring to the Old Testament.
- 40:35Speaker 2: I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.
- 40:38Speaker 2: And then he says, and not even one iota, not
- 40:42Speaker 2: even one dot of the law or the prophets will
- 40:47Speaker 2: be destroyed until all has but rather fulfilled in him.
- 40:53Speaker 2: And that is his understanding. We never find our Lord
- 40:58Speaker 2: speaking against the old covenant, but always in terms of
- 41:04Speaker 2: its fulfillment in him, the new covenant in his body
- 41:08Speaker 2: and blood and through his suffering and death on Calvary,
- 41:13Speaker 2: he establishes the new and then that's It is the covenant.
- 41:17Speaker 2: There can't be anything more than that. The covenant of
- 41:21Speaker 2: love between God and man.
- 41:25Speaker 1: So when you say, earlier you said, when I asked
- 41:29Speaker 1: if Christ and God shared a mind and if they
- 41:32Speaker 1: have the same thoughts at the same time. And it
- 41:36Speaker 1: sounds like yes and no. Christ has his own individual thoughts,
- 41:42Speaker 1: but they also share thoughts. And you had brought up unity,
- 41:49Speaker 1: a oneness that God wants us all to be. Is
- 41:52Speaker 1: that the message? Is that the message in the New Testament?
- 41:55Speaker 2: Yes, just to be clear, when I said Christ had
- 41:59Speaker 2: his own thoughts, yes, he had his own thoughts as
- 42:06Speaker 2: God the Son incarnate, but they were always in harmony
- 42:10Speaker 2: with the Father. That's probably, I wasn't clear enough about that. uh,
- 42:16Speaker 2: our Lord is, our Lord is never thinking in a
- 42:20Speaker 2: way contrary to the father's will. And he, that if one,
- 42:24Speaker 2: one reads the gospels, this comes across very clearly. And he,
- 42:29Speaker 2: he always, when he, he, uh, began his public ministry, he, uh,
- 42:37Speaker 2: said the kingdom of, of, of heaven is at hand.
- 42:40Speaker 2: The kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe
- 42:42Speaker 2: in the gospel. And, uh, That's his sole mission. And
- 42:49Speaker 2: any thoughts that he had, of course, they were his own,
- 42:52Speaker 2: but they were always in harmony with the Father. And
- 42:55Speaker 2: that's why in that prayer that I mentioned that you
- 42:58Speaker 2: just alluded to, to which you just alluded, he says
- 43:03Speaker 2: that his great gift to us is that we should
- 43:08Speaker 2: be of one mind and heart with him who is
- 43:12Speaker 2: always one mind and heart with the Father, that that
- 43:15Speaker 2: we would enjoy that communion between the Father and the
- 43:20Speaker 2: Son in the Holy Spirit. And so we, this is
- 43:25Speaker 2: something that many times we don't think about, but we
- 43:30Speaker 2: are called to share in the life of the Holy Trinity,
- 43:37Speaker 2: not that we are God, but that we are participants
- 43:40Speaker 2: through divine grace in the life of God himself. And
- 43:45Speaker 2: the more we cooperate with divine grace, the more we
- 43:50Speaker 2: draw closer to the Father through the Son and the
- 43:57Speaker 2: Holy Spirit.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Why was Mary chosen?
- 44:10Speaker 2: That's all.
- 44:13Speaker 2: That's all a mystery of God's love. It's wonderful. That's
- 44:17Speaker 2: why I smile, because when you think about it, that
- 44:24Speaker 2: Mary was chosen from all time, because God knew from
- 44:28Speaker 2: all time that he would save us, and that it
- 44:33Speaker 2: would come, even as he spoke to the serpent and
- 44:37Speaker 2: made the first promise of salvation, that a woman... would
- 44:43Speaker 2: bear a son who would crush the head of Satan.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Why was she chosen? Because in this great mystery of
- 44:53Speaker 2: God's love, he wanted to be redeemed by one of us,
- 45:00Speaker 2: one like us. And the only way you can be
- 45:05Speaker 2: like us is to be born of a woman. People say, well,
- 45:11Speaker 2: God could have just sent our Lord directly onto earth.
- 45:15Speaker 2: But no, he wanted, then Christ wouldn't have been a human.
- 45:19Speaker 2: He would have been something else. But no, he wanted
- 45:22Speaker 2: us to be saved by someone like us in everything
- 45:27Speaker 2: but sin. And so Mary, and to be one like
- 45:34Speaker 2: us in everything, you have to be born of a woman.
- 45:37Speaker 2: So he chose Mary to be the mother And then he,
- 45:43Speaker 2: to prepare her from the moment of her conception, she
- 45:50Speaker 2: shared already in Christ's saving work in the redemption that
- 45:54Speaker 2: he would accomplish. She was preserved from any stain of sin.
- 45:59Speaker 2: Only a sinless virgin could be the mother of God,
- 46:03Speaker 2: could carry out this great mission.
- 46:06Speaker 1: And....
- 46:10Speaker 2: All of that is for the glory of God. It
- 46:15Speaker 2: only makes us love God more and want to praise
- 46:19Speaker 2: him more. People say, well, if you believe that about
- 46:22Speaker 2: the Blessed Mother, you're diminishing who Jesus is. It's God,
- 46:27Speaker 2: not at all. In fact, the more one knows and
- 46:31Speaker 2: loves the Mother of God, the more one knows and
- 46:34Speaker 2: loves her only begotten Son, because she, Mary, is all
- 46:39Speaker 2: for God. Jesus. Her whole life is nothing but directed
- 46:43Speaker 2: toward Jesus and his saving mission. And so when we
- 46:48Speaker 2: get close to her, she draws us into that great
- 46:53Speaker 2: mystery in which she participated in a unique way to
- 46:59Speaker 2: be the mother of God. This is something only one
- 47:03Speaker 2: person can had that gift and that was the Blessed
- 47:12Speaker 2: Virgin Mary. That's why we love our Blessed Mother so
- 47:21Speaker 2: much and we have so much devotion to her. But
- 47:24Speaker 2: we understand that the Savior is her son, but we
- 47:30Speaker 2: love her for the part that she played in bringing
- 47:33Speaker 2: him into the world. And of course, she was his
- 47:35Speaker 2: first and best disciple.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Is she the mother that all mothers should aspire to be?
- 47:41Speaker 2: Absolutely. Every mother should desire most of all that their
- 47:58Speaker 2: children be alive in Christ, their eternal salvation. Every mother
- 48:02Speaker 2: should desire most of all to bring our Lord to
- 48:06Speaker 2: her children. It's the most important thing. That's why when
- 48:10Speaker 2: parents receive the great gift of a new human life,
- 48:16Speaker 2: excuse me, the first thing they want for their children,
- 48:21Speaker 2: of course, they're nourishing them and keeping them warm and
- 48:26Speaker 2: clean and everything, the baby. But the first thing they
- 48:29Speaker 2: want is to bring the child to the church to
- 48:32Speaker 2: receive the grace of baptism to become a alive in
- 48:37Speaker 2: Christ and to begin to grow and develop into, as
- 48:42Speaker 2: we say, the full man in Christ that we're all
- 48:45Speaker 2: called to be.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Does God suffer?
- 48:49Speaker 2: Yes, God suffered. All you have to do is look
- 48:54Speaker 2: at the crucifix and you see how God suffered in
- 49:01Speaker 2: our human nature. I guess what I mean, does he feel.
- 49:07Speaker 2: Emotion?
- 49:07Speaker 1: Does he suffer today? Does he look at humanity today?
- 49:10Speaker 1: Does he suffer? Did he look at it before Christ
- 49:13Speaker 1: was born, before his suffering and suffer?
- 49:16Speaker 2: Well, yes. God knows all things. He sees that his
- 49:24Speaker 2: children are going astray and he's trying to reach them,
- 49:29Speaker 2: calling all of us to be his messengers, to reach
- 49:34Speaker 2: out to others. He's trying most of all in the
- 49:37Speaker 2: church through the sacraments trying to bring his children back
- 49:43Speaker 2: to him and to their eternal salvation. God doesn't want
- 49:47Speaker 2: anybody to live in sin or to suffer eternal death.
- 49:52Speaker 2: And so God is all compassionate. I suppose that would
- 49:56Speaker 2: be the best way to discover the suffering of God
- 50:00Speaker 2: is he's full of compassion for us and wants to
- 50:05Speaker 2: draw us to himself.
- 50:09Speaker 1: If you've been listening to the show for a while,
- 50:12Speaker 1: you know this is something I care about. We've had
- 50:14Speaker 1: regenerative farmers and health experts on. We've talked about soil health,
- 50:19Speaker 1: clean water, glyphosate, food security, and how disconnected most Americans
- 50:25Speaker 1: are from where their food actually comes from. Might be
- 50:28Speaker 1: time to start paying some attention. We've talked about foreign
- 50:31Speaker 1: ownership of American farmland, China. We even did an episode
- 50:36Speaker 1: that called out the government for selling off public lands
- 50:39Speaker 1: in Utah. And when you start looking at all of
- 50:42Speaker 1: it together, you realize there's a lot going on between
- 50:45Speaker 1: the land, the food supply, and the people who are
- 50:48Speaker 1: actually trying to produce real food in this country. And
- 50:52Speaker 1: that's why I trust Moink. Moink was started by Lucinda,
- 50:57Speaker 1: an eighth-generation family farmer, to help small, independent family farms
- 51:02Speaker 1: ship high-quality meat directly to your door. We're talking Moink.
- 51:07Speaker 1: wild-caught salmon, grass-fed and grass-finished beef, pasture-raised pork, grass-fed lamb,
- 51:15Speaker 1: and pasture-raised chicken. And this is the kind of meat
- 51:18Speaker 1: you actually want to feed your family. It's antibiotic-free, they
- 51:22Speaker 1: do not use growth hormones, and they do not feed
- 51:25Speaker 1: GMO grains. And they're not adding solutions to the chicken
- 51:31Speaker 1: or sugar to the bacon. Moink connects you back to
- 51:34Speaker 1: the source. You're not just buying meat from some giant
- 51:37Speaker 1: supply chain and hoping for the best. You're supporting independent
- 51:41Speaker 1: family farms that care about the land, the animals, and
- 51:46Speaker 1: the quality of the food they produce. When you purchase
- 51:49Speaker 1: from Moink, you're not just getting better meat for your family.

- 52:22Speaker 1: Is Christ and Mary the new Adam and Eve?
- 52:27Speaker 2: Yes, in the church world, We refer to Christ as
- 52:30Speaker 2: the new Adam. He was the father of.
- 52:35Speaker 1: Us all.
- 52:35Speaker 2: They're our first parents. And he failed in his mission,
- 52:42Speaker 2: but that mission was finally accomplished in our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 52:47Speaker 2: And his cooperator was Eve as his bride, the companion
- 52:53Speaker 2: that God gave to him in creation. And so she
- 52:57Speaker 2: too had failed it's Blessed Virgin Mary is the woman
- 53:05Speaker 2: who restores then the dignity of woman restores the woman
- 53:13Speaker 2: to her place in God's plan and so that's why
- 53:17Speaker 2: we call our Lord the new Adam and the Blessed
- 53:21Speaker 2: Virgin Mary the new Eve and we believe that when
- 53:26Speaker 2: this is depicted in some religious art but after Lord
- 53:30Speaker 2: died on the cross and was buried, he descended into hell,
- 53:36Speaker 2: but not hell in the sense of a place of
- 53:38Speaker 2: eternal punishment, but what is sometimes referred to as Hades.
- 53:44Speaker 2: In other words, all the people who had died, all
- 53:47Speaker 2: the just people in the Old Testament, and we believe
- 53:50Speaker 2: that Adam and Eve too repented of their sin and
- 53:57Speaker 2: strove then to live in in communion with God, and
- 54:01Speaker 2: we have King David, we have Moses, all the great figures,
- 54:07Speaker 2: that they were in this place waiting for the Savior,
- 54:11Speaker 2: and that our Lord descended to that place and brought
- 54:19Speaker 2: them to heaven. And some of the sacred art, especially
- 54:28Speaker 2: in the Eastern churches, it shows him taking Adam and
- 54:33Speaker 2: Eve by the hand and leading them out of this
- 54:37Speaker 2: place of waiting for redemption, uh, to share in the redemption.
- 54:41Speaker 2: And it said in the scriptures that the graves, many
- 54:46Speaker 2: of the graves of the just, when at the moment
- 54:49Speaker 2: of Christ's death, uh, uh, were opened and, and, uh,
- 54:55Speaker 2: and we understand that these, uh, souls, then body and
- 55:02Speaker 2: soul were taken to heaven.
- 55:06Speaker 1: Adam and Eve were supposed to live forever, correct?
- 55:10Speaker 2: Were they supposed to live forever? Yes, they would have
- 55:13Speaker 2: lived forever in the friendship of God. It was through
- 55:16Speaker 2: their sin that death came into the world.
- 55:18Speaker 1: So when Christ came, it was to It was to
- 55:26Speaker 1: forgive us for all of our sins. All sins can
- 55:28Speaker 1: be forgiven.
- 55:28Speaker 2: Right, and so that we could live forever.
- 55:31Speaker 1: So why are we not living forever?
- 55:33Speaker 2: Well, we do if we die in him. Okay. When
- 55:39Speaker 2: we die, our soul goes immediately for judgment. And if we...
- 55:51Speaker 2: repented of our sins and made satisfaction for them were
- 55:54Speaker 2: received directly into heaven. If not, we spend time in purgatory,
- 56:02Speaker 2: a place in which we're prepared for heaven by fulfilling
- 56:06Speaker 2: the satisfactions. People, we say, have an untimely death, who
- 56:12Speaker 2: die without being able to, through their suffering and suffering,
- 56:21Speaker 2: be ready to enter heaven, they go to purgatory and
- 56:24Speaker 2: they're purified of any sinfulness in their lives. We call
- 56:31Speaker 2: the temporal punishment due to their sins. And then they
- 56:34Speaker 2: go to heaven too. We talk about the church as
- 56:38Speaker 2: the church, glorious saints in heaven, the church suffering those
- 56:44Speaker 2: in purgatory who are being purified to heaven. And when
- 56:50Speaker 2: they are purified to go to heaven, then the church militant,
- 56:55Speaker 2: those of us who are here still fighting the battle
- 56:59Speaker 2: and waiting for our Lord to call us home.
- 57:05Speaker 1: So if we say he will come again to judge
- 57:09Speaker 1: both the living and the dead, what does that mean
- 57:13Speaker 1: if our souls immediately go to judgment when we die?
- 57:18Speaker 2: What it means is, that he will judge the living,
- 57:25Speaker 2: those who are still, when he comes at the end
- 57:28Speaker 2: of the time, some people will still be on earth.
- 57:32Speaker 2: And so he will judge those, but then he will
- 57:36Speaker 2: also then judge those that are still in purgatory. And
- 57:41Speaker 2: of course, those who have gone to heaven already, they
- 57:46Speaker 2: have been judged and been found worthy to to be
- 57:49Speaker 2: in the company of the Blessed Trinity with the angels
- 57:53Speaker 2: and all the saints. We believe that on that last day,
- 57:58Speaker 2: on the day of the Lord's final coming, that the
- 58:03Speaker 2: bodies of all the just will be restored to them
- 58:07Speaker 2: in glory, like our Lord's own glorious body. We call
- 58:11Speaker 2: that the resurrection of the body. And so those who've
- 58:16Speaker 2: already gone to heaven Their souls have gone to heaven.
- 58:20Speaker 2: Their bodies will be restored to them. They will be
- 58:26Speaker 2: in glory with our Lord. Our Blessed Mother already enjoys
- 58:29Speaker 2: that privilege. When she died, she was assumed body and
- 58:34Speaker 2: soul into heaven. And so she enjoys that life already.
- 58:41Speaker 2: Some people think also, for instance, that St. Joseph was
- 58:46Speaker 2: one of those who would have, at the Lord's death
- 58:49Speaker 2: and resurrection, would have come out from the tomb and
- 58:52Speaker 2: that at that moment he would have been assumed body
- 58:58Speaker 2: and soul into heaven too. That's not church. Church doesn't
- 59:01Speaker 2: teach that formally, but it also doesn't condemn that thought
- 59:05Speaker 2: that that could be possible.
- 59:07Speaker 1: When we're talking about purgatory, is there any mention of
- 59:09Speaker 1: purgatory in the Bible, in the scriptures?
- 59:13Speaker 2: We find a very strong message of it in the
- 59:18Speaker 2: two books of the Maccabees in the Old Testament, in
- 59:22Speaker 2: which there is an account of a battle and And
- 59:28Speaker 2: a number of soldiers were killed of the Maccabees. And
- 59:35Speaker 2: when they took their bodies to bury them, they discovered
- 59:40Speaker 2: that some of them had pagan amulets or little statues
- 59:48Speaker 2: or whatever on them, which would, of course, be a
- 59:53Speaker 2: serious sin. And so....
- 59:57Speaker 1: What do you mean by tattoos?
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: These weren't tattoos. They were like statues, little objects like
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: you might wear metal, for instance, we do today. But
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: it wasn't something holy. It was of a pagan, it
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: was connected with the pagan gods. In other words, it
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: would have been an act of idolatry, your grievous sin.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: And so the they took up a collection to have
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: prayers said for them and sent to Jerusalem. And the
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: scripture is very clear. It's a good thing to pray
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: for the dead, that they might be freed from any
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: sins that they had committed and that they might be
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: received into eternal life. And we, the church has understood
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: this from the, very beginning that it was that we
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: are one in communion not only with the saints in
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: heaven but also with the deceased who have not gone
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: to heaven and that therefore we should help them by
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: praying for them and then also asking them to pray
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: for us. They have an ability to pray and help us,
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: even as we're called to help them by our prayers.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: And so that is a very serious part of our
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: Christian life. The whole month of November is dedicated to
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: what we call the poor souls, the souls in purgatory,
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: to pray for them, to honor the dead, to pray
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: for eternal life for them. And There's also the possibility,
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: as we know, the merits of our Lord by His
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: passion and death are infinite. And also the saints who
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: led such holy lives, they merit graces for others. I
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: always say to people when they're suffering something terrible, don't
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: forget to offer this for others. the souls in purgatory
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: or for others in the church who are suffering. Because
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: our sufferings, when we accept them, unite them to those
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: of Christ, that can be meritorious for others who are
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: struggling or have some great suffering or for the souls
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: in purgatory. And the church then, we're able through the
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: church to gain indulgences for the souls and also for
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: the faithful departed to hasten their arrival in heaven. This
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: is all a very beautiful aspect of our life in
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: the church. Too often we don't think about that, that
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: the communion of saints includes not only us, and we're
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: saints in the making, but also those souls and purgatorians
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: we all work to help one another to attain eternal
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: life in heaven.
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: When did the ridiculing, the persecution, the harassing Jesus begin?
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: Well, practically from the very beginning of his public ministry,
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: there were those who said, who is... He forgives sins.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: Only God forgives sins. He's a blasphemer. They tried to,
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: at one point, they were going to throw him off
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: a cliff, but he slipped through their midst. And there
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: were many complicated reasons why people opposed him, but mostly
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: they didn't want to accept that the Messiah was not
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: an earthly ruler. He wasn't somebody who would come to
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: to make everybody rich or to make everybody politically free,
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: but that he had come to save us from sin,
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: that his victory was over sin and over evil. And
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: so they rejected him. And of course, we see the
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: culmination of it, He enters Jerusalem for his last Passover.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: He's 33 years old. And as he enters Jerusalem, the
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: people are all cheering him. But then the high priest
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: and others who were plotting against him had found one
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: of his apostles who was a traitor, Judas Iscariot. And
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: then plotted for his arrest and his condemnation, and they went.
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: Pontius Pilate was a Roman. He wanted to release Jesus,
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: but he had this mob on his hands, those who
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: had first been hailing our Lord as he came into Jerusalem,
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: then turned, and so Pilate, tried every way to release Jesus.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: Even there was a custom every year he would release one,
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: one prisoner. And he, he suggested to the people that
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: he would release Jesus. And they said, they yelled, crucify him,
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: crucify him. And, uh, uh, and so he finally, uh,
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: that's what he did. He, he let him, he let
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: him be crucified and, uh, But that was the culmination
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: of all the hatred toward our Lord, just the stubborn
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: refusal to accept him as our Lord and Savior.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: Did anybody realize that the prophecies were coming true from
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: the Old Testament?
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: Oh, yes. There were just people. For instance, two Two
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: individuals we know about from the Gospels are Nicodemus, who
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: was a Pharisee and who came to Jesus, as the
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: Scripture says, in the night. He realized who Jesus was,
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: but he couldn't. If he had been known among the
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: other high priests, he would have been in trouble. So
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: he came to, but when our Lord died, he and
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: Joseph of Arimathea who was another just man who recognized
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: that our Lord was truly the Messiah they came and
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: took care that he had a reverent burial because normally
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: it would have just been thrown in a common grave
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: but Joseph of Arimathea had a tomb that our Lord
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: was buried there but And there were others as well,
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: of course, the holy women, our Blessed Mother, but also
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: Mary Magdalene and other holy women who were with our Lord.
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: And St. John, of course, was always with them. And
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: then the other apostles, they received, finally, our Lord had
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: told them why he had come, but their minds were eventually,
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: through the grace of the Holy Spirit, they understood and
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: they remained faithful. But even at the moment of his
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: death itself, there were those who understood that he was
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: the fulfillment of all the prophecies. And, well, after his
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: resurrection and ascension, the sending of the Holy Spirit, the
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: church spread very rapidly. The power of the risen Christ
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: was clearly visible in the conversions and the spread of
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: the faith. St. Paul's letters are especially wonderful in that
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: regard because we read, not that there weren't troubles. Sometimes
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: people think that the early years of the church that
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: everything was just perfect. No, there were people who also
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: were up to mischief in the church in those days
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: and St. Paul had to confront it. We find the
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: teachings with regard to sexual morality and, and, uh, honesty
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: and so forth. Uh, and that, uh, what she, he
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: had to, he had to address, but, uh, nevertheless, notwithstanding
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: these faults, which are always going to be present as
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: long as man suffers from the effects of original sin
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: and does not cooperate with God's grace. Notwithstanding that the
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: church spread in a, in a most wonderful way. And
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: the whole history of the church and the evangelization of
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: the nations is just replete. And then the catalog of saints,
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: many of whom are martyrs, who in fidelity to Christ
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: and giving witness to Christ to others, actually died or
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: put to death. But just coming, it's interesting. Very soon
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: there will be beatified some martyrs who were in what
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: is present-day Georgia, the Diocese of Savannah, but they were
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: Franciscan friars who came to preach to the Indians, the
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: Native Americans in that area. I think it was called
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: at that time Old Florida. But in any case, they came,
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: and of course, as part of the teaching of the faith,
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: they taught that... marriages between one man and one woman.
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: And there was a practice among some of the Indians
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: of men taking more than one wife. And so they
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: taught this to the people, and the people were seemingly
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: accepting it and were baptized, including this chief. But then
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: he wanted to take a second wife. And, of course,
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: he wanted the priest to bless us. He had been baptized.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: And the priest told him, no, you can't do that.
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: Marriage is in our Lord Jesus taught that a man
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: takes to himself a wife and the two of them
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: become one flesh. And so the chief then had killed
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: him and then went to the other Franciscans who were
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: with him. I think the total number, I should remember this,
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: I think it was five, and tried to get one
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: of them to say, no, no, this is all right,
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: you can take a second wife. And they all said
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: no to it. So they all gave their lives to
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: be faithful to Christ with regard to marriage. This is
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: one example. Of course, it's very close to home here.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: But it's an example of the grace of the risen
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: Christ which is immeasurable and unceasing. There's no limit to it,
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: and it's timeless until his final coming.
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: Who were the apostles?
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: The apostles were the first bishops. Our Lord, we see from,
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: this is a very good question, by the way. Our Lord,
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: from the very beginning of his public ministry, he chooses
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: 12 men, For what purpose? He gives them a more
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: intense teaching so that when he died, just a minute,
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: I'll talk about the Last Supper, that when he died,
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: before he died, the night before he died at the
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: Last Supper, he conferred on them the grace to be
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: able to act in his person, to be priests, priests, bishops, priests.
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: in order to, first of all, to offer the holy
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: sacrifice of the Mass, but also to forgive sins, to
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: be his pastoral presence in the Church, even as his
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: love expressed in the Last Supper and in his crucifixion
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: and death is the Holy Eucharist, divine love made flesh,
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: we say. So also his pastoral love, offering the Last Supper,
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: forgiving sins, is in his priests. And so we have
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: in the church what we call a hierarchical communion. All
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: of us are one, but that communion is served by
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: those who are charged to be the priests, the teachers
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: of the faith, the celebrants of the sacred mysteries, and
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: the guides, the moral guides for the faithful. And so
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: those are the apostles, and they were recognized from the
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: very moment of our Lord. Throughout his public ministry, they
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: were recognized as as being chosen for a very special service.
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: And then after our Lord's passion and death and the
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: coming of the Holy Spirit, they were the ones who
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: went out, for instance, baptizing, confirming, giving the sacrament of confirmation,
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: celebrating the Eucharist, anointing the sick, general teaching, teaching the
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: faith with authority. We talk about the apostolic tradition and
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: also teaching the good morals that are required of a Christian.
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: How were they chosen?
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: Chosen directly by our Lord.
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: Well, how did he make the decision to choose them?
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: Well, I wouldn't presume to know his mind. He And
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: it's interesting because he chose, there were various lots. They
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: weren't all, you know, they weren't all like John the Evangelist,
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: but Peter was a tax collector. There were two brothers.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: James and John were called the Boanerges. They were very zealous.
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: They were the sons of thunder, they called them. But
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: he saw in each of these men gifts that would
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: serve his pastoral mission. And then he chose them and
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: he formed them. He had to instruct them, teach them,
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: sometimes admonish them. When he announced that he would have
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: to suffer and die to save us, St. Peter said,
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: oh no, that can't happen and so forth. Our Lord
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: said to him, get behind me, Satan. You're thinking like
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: men and not like God. And then the mother of
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: James and John was also asking. She didn't understand correctly,
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: and obviously they didn't either, that he wasn't going to
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: establish an earthy kingdom where he would have power and
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: money and So she's asking if her two sons can
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: be on his right and his left in his kingdom.
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: And he tells her, well, that's not mine to decide,
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: but God the Father. But they will, he asks her,
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: were they willing to share in his suffering and the
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: bitter chalice from which he would drink? And they say, yes,
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: of course, and And he says, well, you will, but
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: they only later came to understand what this meant, the
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: suffering that they would, and both of them died. Well,
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: John did not. John died a natural death, but James
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: was the Bishop of Jerusalem, and he was, that was
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: James the Greater, and he was martyred infidelity to Christ.
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: Were they all chosen at once?
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: In a very short time. Early on in the Gospel,
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: there is an account of the choosing of the twelve
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: and it talks about particularly he chose James and John
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: and then Philip goes to get Nathaniel, wants to bring
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: him home. to say our Lord, but it's like within
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: a short period of time.
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: He.
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: Has the 12 together, and the gospel announces their names.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: Was Judas an apostle?
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: Yes. Yes.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: Why would God choose somebody that would betray him?
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: Well, perhaps it's a lesson to all the apostles and
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: their successors that being chosen to be apostle doesn't mean
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: that you can't betray our Lord. And Judas is a
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: meditation for all of us who are priests and bishops
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: that how We must be faithful to our Lord in
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: all things.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: What happened to Judas?
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: He hung himself. He sold Jesus for 30 coins. He
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: betrayed him. And then he went back to try to
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: apparently realize what he had done. And they tried to
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: give the money back, but they took it and they
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: bought a plot of land called the Potter's Field, but
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: He then despaired, and he hung himself. And that's very,
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: very sad that we talk about sin against the Holy Spirit.
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: And what is that sin? It's the despair of God's mercy.
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: And that's what happened with Judas. Peter, too, betrayed our
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: Lord in the sense he denied that he knew him. Now,
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: he didn't take money to Judas as much, or heinous
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: betrayal in the sense that he took money to hand
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: over our Lord to those that would kill him. I mean,
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: that's very.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: Repugnant.
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: But Peter denied him, but the gospel tells us that
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: then he wept, and he He was sorrowful and he
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: trusted in God's mercy.
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: Who were the disciples?
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: The disciples were all those who came to follow Jesus.
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: The disciples, they are students of the Master and the disciples.
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: And so they.
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: But the apostles were also students.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: Yes, they were.
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: They're the chosen.
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: You could say in a way the apostles... They were
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: among the disciples, but who had been called to exercise
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: this particular office in the church as shepherds of the flock.
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: As leaders. Okay. Would you say that the Gospels are
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: the most important part of the New Testament? Absolutely. Why?
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: Because they are the account of the saving work of
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: our Lord Jesus Christ, of his words and deeds. by
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: which we are saved. And I'm a big fan of St. Paul, obviously,
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: and also the other epistles and so forth. They all
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: have wonderful things in them. But everything that they have
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: that's wonderful is pointing to the heart of the redemption,
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: which is Jesus Christ incarnate, God the Son incarnate, who suffered, died,
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: rose from the dead, ascended to the right hand of
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: the Father, and sent the Holy Spirit upon the church.
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: And so the Gospels is Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: What happened to the other eight apostles? Why didn't they
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: write the Gospels?
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: The four Gospel writers are not all apostles.
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: They're not?
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: No. Mark was not an apostle, neither was Luke. Okay.
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: So not all the Gospels, not all the apostles wrote
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: a Gospel. There are some, what they call, pseudo-gospels people
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: came up with. One was attributed to St. James, but
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: they're not recognized as gospels by the church. Mark had
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: a special connection with St. Peter and St. And Luke,
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: they were closely associated, but they were not apostles.
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: And the others, well, Jude left us an epistle and James,
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: but the other apostles did not leave us writings.
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: Okay. Do the Gospels contradict each other at all?
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: No, there's... no contradiction in the Gospels. Over time, people
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: have also put the Gospels together in one text, and
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: there you see certain accounts are found in all the Gospels,
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: some found in two Gospels, three Gospels, but there is
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: no contradiction.
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: Were the apostles with him? All the time, all 12
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: of them.
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: Yes, but we understand from the Gospels they accompanied him everywhere.
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: They left their nets and followed him. And they were
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: fishermen mostly. But he called them. He called Matthew, who
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: was sitting at the tax collector's place. He called him,
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: and they followed him. And from that moment on, they
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: were completely at his service.
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: Let's talk about the Last Supper. What was the significance?
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: This is very important. Our Lord has come into Jerusalem.
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: He came into Jerusalem knowing that he would have to
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: embrace his passion and death. So on the night before
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: the Passion began, He brought the disciples together for what
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: was the Passover meal. It was the annual celebration of
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: the Passover, of the great liberation of God's people from
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: slavery in Egypt. He brought them together, and in that meal,
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: he said things, and his power is God, that instituted
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: two sacraments. The sacrament of all sacraments, as we say,
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: the Holy Eucharist. He took the bread and the wine
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: and said, this is my body, which will be given
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: up for you. This is the cup of my blood,
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: which we poured out for you. By that, he signified
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: that we would share in the salvation that he won
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: for us by giving his body up to death, by
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: pouring out his lifeblood in a sacramental way, that he
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: would make always present that salvation by a sacrament, which
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: would be nothing less than a share in his very
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: body and blood. In other words, to receive him, body, blood, soul,
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: and divinity into our very being. So at that moment,
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: he anticipated the salvation that he would win for us
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: on Calvary by instituting the Holy Eucharist. At the same time,
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: he commanded the Twelve, do this in memory of me.
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: And he instituted the Holy Priesthood so that, because Christ,
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: he was going to die.
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: And he knew that.
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: He knew that. And he wanted to leave those who
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: would perpetuate until the last day the offering of the
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: Holy Eucharist so that he would always be able to
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: feed a man in every age and every place with
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: his saving body and blood. And so the Last Supper,
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: Holy Thursday, is for us Easter Sunday is the great victory,
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: but it's inseparably connected with the Last Supper because the
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: gift of Easter Sunday, the gift of eternal life comes
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: to us sacramentally through the Holy Eucharist offered by the
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: priest who acts in Christ's person to bring us the sacrament.
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: It's not something, you know, some people say, well, If
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: there isn't a priest, the people can just come together
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: and have the Eucharist. No. This is Christ's will that
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: in this moment. way that there should be a consecrated
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: man who offers the Holy Eucharist for us so that
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: we can be strengthened with the gift of Christ's very
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: life and also It's a pledge of eternal life. St.
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: Thomas has a beautiful text, O sacrum convivium, O holy
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: banquet in which Christ is received. The memory of his
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: passion is renewed. We are given the pledge of eternal life.
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: Everything in this most wonderful sacrament. That's why also we
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: receive the Holy Eucharist and Holy Communion at Mass. But
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: it's such a great mystery that we also worship the
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: Holy Eucharist outside of Mass so that we never lose
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: sight of the truth that this is the Body, Blood, Soul,
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: and Divinity of Christ. And so we put the Blessed
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: Sacrament in a beautiful, what we call, monstrance or ostensorium,
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: and we pray before the Holy Eucharist. When we pass
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: a church, if it's possible for us, we go in
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: and make a visit to our Lord in the tabernacle
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: because the hosts are consecrated at Mass. Because our Lord
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: wants to be with people at all times, even when
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: the Mass is not being celebrated, the Eucharist is reserved
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: in the tabernacle. People pray there, but then also if
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: someone is sick, if someone is dying, the priest takes
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: the sacred host, goes to them, uh, so that they
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: can die with, with our Lord with them, uh, on
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: their way from this life to the life which is
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: to come, or that they can be strengthened when they're,
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: when they're weak, uh, and need that help. And so it's, uh,
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: this is the, this is the wonderful, uh, sacrament in
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: the church. There are seven sacraments, as you know, but the,
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: The sacrament, the most blessed sacrament, as we call it,
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: is the Holy Eucharist. And the priesthood inseparably connected to it.
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: So is it a symbol of the body and blood
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: of Christ? No, it is the body and blood of Christ.
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: It is the body and blood of Christ.
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: It is the body and blood of Christ. That's why
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: we treat the Eucharist with such great reverence. If it
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: were just a symbol, and there are Christians... who are
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: not Catholic, who think that the Eucharist is just a
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: symbolic meal. And so after the Eucharist, they just throw
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: the hosts away that are not used. But we could
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: never do that because we believe this is a teaching,
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: the word that was found at the Council of Trent
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: to express this, transubstantiation that the very substance of the
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: bread is changed into the body of Christ Christ himself
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: coming to feed us and the accidents it looks like
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: bread but the substance by the action of divine grace
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: is the body of Christ.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: And the last supper was on Friday It.
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: Was on Thursday.
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: It was on Thursday.
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: Christ died for us on Good Friday, and on the
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: evening of Holy Thursday, we call it, he celebrated his
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: last supper, the Passover meal, which was transformed, and we
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: call it now the Lord's Supper. It's the first Eucharist.
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: Is that considered the first Mass? Yes. Yes. I'm always

- 1:35:24Speaker 1: Let's get into the crucifixion. So we just covered The
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: Last Supper. and everything that that meant with the Eucharist.
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: How long after the Last Supper did they come get him,
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: and why did they come get him?
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: Well, he went out to pray in the Garden of
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: Gethsemane with Peter, James, and John, and they came to
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: get him because they, well, it's complicated to put it simply,
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: they They said that he was stirring up trouble that
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: the Romans then would in some way crush them, or
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: their idea was to get him away, lest he seem
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: to be a threat to the Roman government. He wasn't,
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: in fact, because there was no part of his public
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: ministry where he was trying, for instance, to gather troops
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: or to, you know, set up some kind of government.
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: That just wasn't his mission.
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: What did the Roman government believe in at the time?
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: The Romans said they occupied Palestine, the Holy Land today.
- 1:36:49Speaker 2: And they had a Roman governor there by the name
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: of Pontius Pilate. And that's why they brought our Lord,
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: when they arrested him, They took him to Pontius Pilate
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: to ask that he be condemned to death. And Pontius Pilate... Well, first,
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: after the Last Supper, he went out directly to the
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: Garden of Gethsemane. He prayed there. And he prayed. His
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: prayer was so intense that they say he perspired blood.
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: He knew that... The passion was at hand, and so
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: it was while he was praying in the Garden of
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: Gethsemane that Judas arrived with the soldiers, and they arrested him.
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: The famous sign, how did Judas indicate who he was?
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: So the soldiers would arrest him. He kissed him, went
- 1:37:58Speaker 2: up to him, and in the In that culture, it
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: wouldn't be unusual to give somebody a kiss. We're not
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: talking about some passionate kiss, but to kiss them on
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: the cheek, this is a normal way of greeting. And
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: our Lord said to Judas, you would betray me with
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: a kiss. In other words, a sign of a friendship,
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: of bond. Instead, it was, but that's what happened. So
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: they took him and took him before Pontius Pilate and
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: he eventually condemned him to death by crucifixion. It's clear
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: that he said to the people, he said, I find
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: nothing in this man to condemn him. But the people
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: even said that he presented to them, Christ to them
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: as their king. And the people responded, we have no
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: king but Caesar, the king of the Romans. So And
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: then develops the whole story of the Passion. And our
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: Lord is scourged. He's mocked. And then has to take
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: up this arduous walk from the Praetorium, where he was condemned,
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: to Calvary, to this hill nearby, dragging the wood of
- 1:39:43Speaker 2: the cross on his shoulders, and eventually they arrive at Calvary,
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: and then he's nailed to the cross, and the cross
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: is lifted, and this is, it's a particularly agonizing form
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: of death because the weight of the body pulling down
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: on the chest, the person eventually dies of asphyxiation. He
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: can't He had to keep pushing himself up to get
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: a breath, and at a certain point, the body is
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: so weak that... And we have the account in the
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: Gospels of our Lord's passion and death, and in the
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: Gospel of John, it's particularly rich, and our Lord gives us...
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: what they call the seven last words of our Lord,
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: but among them are the words by which he gave
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: us the blessed mother, his mother, as our mother said
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: to John, the evangelist, who was to put to the
- 1:40:52Speaker 2: cross with Mary and Mary Magdalene, woman, behold your son,
- 1:40:58Speaker 2: he says to his mother, and behold, and then he
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: says to John, behold your mother. And so we see
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: that our Lord is confiding the church and especially the
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: to the intercession of care, the Blessed Mother, and then
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: he dies.
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: Where were the apostles at this time?
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: They had all scattered except for John. They were around
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: but hiding. They didn't want to... Fear? Fear. They were
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: all afraid. We have to say they were a cowardly lot,
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: except for John. So... And after his death, there's a
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: very significant... Our Lord permits that the Roman soldier... Well,
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: they came, then he was crucified with two other men
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: who were real criminals. And one of them mocked our Lord,
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: and the other one, whom we call Dismas, the good thief,
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: he said... He reprimanded his cohort, saying... We're here dying
- 1:42:12Speaker 2: because we've committed crimes. He's not done anything. You should
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: not mock him. And he said to Jesus, Lord, remember
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: me when you come into your kingdom, which was an
- 1:42:26Speaker 2: expression of a belief in eternal life. And our Lord said,
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: today you will be with me in paradise. And so
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: we believe that that thief was actually... one of the
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: first to share in the grace of salvation that Christ won.
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: But anyway, what I wanted to get to was our
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: Lord had died, and so the soldiers came, and what
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: they did to make sure that these criminals were dead
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: was they'd break their legs. So they did that with
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: the two thieves that were buried with him, the two criminals,
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: When they came to him, he was clearly already dead.
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: And so they didn't break his legs. But when the
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: Roman soldier pierced his side, going into his heart with
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: the spear, and the scripture says that blood and water
- 1:43:27Speaker 2: flowed out. And for us, this is a sign of
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: the sacramental grace that comes to us in virtue of
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: Christ's passion and death. And it's the water of baptism,
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: the blood of the Holy Eucharist, the body and blood
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: of Christ. And that's also then at the heart of
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: a great devotion in the church to the sacred heart
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: of Jesus. We often have seen the image of our
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: Lord and he's holding his heart, showing his heart to us.
- 1:44:02Speaker 2: And that's simply a reminder to us that our Lord
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: is with us always in the church and his heart
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: never ceases to beat with love for us. And that
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: heart is now glorious after his resurrection. And that's, for us,
- 1:44:23Speaker 2: it's just such a wonderful truth.
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: Do we have any idea of how big his discipleship
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: was at the time of the crucifixion?
- 1:44:34Speaker 2: It was large. We hear many accounts, for instance, of
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: the Sermon on the Mount, that a large crowd followed him.
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: People were, well, they had been going to John the
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: Baptist before our Lord began his public ministry, and the
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: people were looking for the Savior. So I wouldn't be
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: able to put a numerical figure on it, but... Let
- 1:45:04Speaker 2: us just say that there was a sizable group of
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: people who were following him.
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: But it was no match for the Roman army.
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: No, no, no. And he wasn't arming them physically. He
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: was arming them spiritually. And so they wouldn't have been
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: in any position to... to fight the Romans. And the
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: fact of the matter is that the high priests and
- 1:45:43Speaker 2: the leaders of the Jewish people had whipped up a
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: sizable crowd that were actually asking for our Lord's execution
- 1:45:56Speaker 2: because it's clear that Pontius Pilate didn't want to didn't
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: want to have him executed. And even Pilate's wife sent
- 1:46:08Speaker 2: a message to him that she'd had a dream about
- 1:46:10Speaker 2: Jesus and that he shouldn't condemn him to death. But
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: when the people were shouting and he saw that there
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: was a riot at hand, this among the Jewish people,
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: not obviously the followers of Jesus, then he He succumbed
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: and he said, then take him and crucify him.
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: What happened to him?
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: What happened to him?
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: Pontius Pilate.
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: I can't remember how he ended his days. He continued
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: on there. He's mentioned in the creed that we pray
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: every Sunday at Mass. Our Lord suffered under Pontius Pilate.
- 1:46:56Speaker 2: I seem to recall that he came to a sad end,
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: but I... I don't, it's not coming clearly in my
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: head what happened to him, but that's certainly able to
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: be researched. But I have the recollection that he came
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: to us in kind of a sad end.
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: How did the discipleship grow after?
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: It was the....
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: Well, I guess maybe we should save that question until
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: after the resurrection.
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: So what happened in between?
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: So our Lord, as I was mentioning before, Joseph of
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: Arimathea was a just man. He was among the leaders
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: of the Jewish people, but a just man who was
- 1:47:50Speaker 2: a disciple of Jesus. He went to Pilate and said,
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: I would like the body of Jesus crucified. The buried
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. But then
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: when he found out that he was, he gave the
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: body to Joseph of Arimathea. And so he, together with
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: Nicodemus and then, of course, the Blessed Mother and the
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: Holy Women, they prepared Jesus' body for burial and they
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: buried him. him in this tomb. It would have been
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: carved into the hillside, a stone tomb. Why did he get.
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: His own tomb?
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: Because I suspect it was the one in which he
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: intended himself to be buried in time. And that he
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: gave it to Jesus. He was that.
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: Who gave it?
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: Loved our Lord that much and was that dedicated to him.
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: Who gave it to Jesus?
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: Joseph of Arimathea.
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: And so our Lord is buried. That's on Friday. He
- 1:48:58Speaker 2: died at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. He's buried that evening.
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: And.
- 1:49:07Speaker 2: some time between his burial on Friday evening and the
- 1:49:13Speaker 2: morning of Sunday, the resurrection took place. And the only
- 1:49:20Speaker 2: way we can describe it is as an explosion of
- 1:49:25Speaker 2: light or because his bodily remains, his poor tortured body
- 1:49:34Speaker 2: was glorified was he came back to life and in
- 1:49:45Speaker 2: a holy transformed way and then began a series of
- 1:49:52Speaker 2: his apparitions for 40 days then he appeared to the
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: apostles who were hiding in the upper room they're still
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: scared so they're hiding in the upper room he appeared
- 1:50:04Speaker 2: to them once Thomas wasn't there, and the other apostles
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: told Thomas they'd seen the Lord, he said, unless I
- 1:50:16Speaker 2: put my hand into his side and see these wounds,
- 1:50:21Speaker 2: I won't believe it. And the Lord came back then
- 1:50:23Speaker 2: the following Sunday and showed himself to Thomas, and Thomas said,
- 1:50:34Speaker 2: was overcome. He claimed my Lord and my God. He
- 1:50:38Speaker 2: recognized Jesus immediately. He appeared to the apostles who were fishing.
- 1:50:43Speaker 2: Some of them had gone back to fishing. He appeared
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: on the side of the sea with them and offered
- 1:50:54Speaker 2: them breakfast and they recognized and it was the Lord
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: who appeared to them. Then there's the very famous account
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: of the two disciples who, after our Lord's death on Friday,
- 1:51:10Speaker 2: are walking to the neighboring town from Jerusalem to Emmaus,
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: and they're lamenting the demise of our Lord, and he
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: appears to them, but they don't recognize him. And he says,
- 1:51:25Speaker 2: what are you talking about? They said, are you the
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: only person in Jerusalem that doesn't know about what happened
- 1:51:31Speaker 2: to Jesus of Nazareth? And they then recount the whole
- 1:51:35Speaker 2: thing to them, and then he said, you haven't understood,
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: and he explained to them. This gets back to the
- 1:51:43Speaker 2: point we've made several times in our conversation. He then
- 1:51:49Speaker 2: interpreted the whole scriptures for them to show that he,
- 1:51:54Speaker 2: in fact, was the fulfillment of the promise of salvation,
- 1:51:58Speaker 2: and so they arrive where they're going to stay, and
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: they sit down for a meal, and he he breaks
- 1:52:06Speaker 2: the bread in the same way he did at the
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: last supper. And they recognize that it's him. And they,
- 1:52:13Speaker 2: and then he, he disappears, but it's very powerful. They
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: said they recognized him in the Eucharist and the breaking
- 1:52:21Speaker 2: of the bread.
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: He disappeared right in front of them.
- 1:52:23Speaker 2: Yes. And so, uh, at the end of those 40 days, he,
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: he called the apostles together and, uh, on the foot
- 1:52:35Speaker 2: of the Mount of the Ascension, and instructed them to
- 1:52:41Speaker 2: go forth. And first he told them to wait for
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: the gift of the Holy Spirit, and then he also
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: instructed them to go out and to teach all nations,
- 1:52:54Speaker 2: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of
- 1:52:56Speaker 2: the Son of the Holy Spirit. And then at that,
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: he ascended into heaven. He had was lifted up and
- 1:53:03Speaker 2: away from their sight. And they went back then, that
- 1:53:07Speaker 2: was on Ascension Thursday. They went back and they prayed
- 1:53:12Speaker 2: for nine days for the gift of the Holy Spirit
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: that had been promised to them. That's where the practice
- 1:53:19Speaker 2: comes of a novena in the church, nine days of prayer.
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: The first novena was the nine days of prayer from
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: Holy Thursday to Pentecost Sunday. And on Pentecost Sunday, They're
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: in the upper room, still hiding for fear of the Jews.
- 1:53:37Speaker 2: And there's this tremendous wind, and then they see like
- 1:53:43Speaker 2: little flames of fire above their heads. And it was ascending,
- 1:53:47Speaker 2: God the Father and God the Son sending the Holy
- 1:53:51Speaker 2: Spirit upon them. And these disciples, who up to that
- 1:53:55Speaker 2: point were fearful and weak, becomes simply bold. Peter goes
- 1:54:02Speaker 2: out and announces in a very forceful way the truth
- 1:54:06Speaker 2: about our Lord, about the redemption he had accomplished. And
- 1:54:12Speaker 2: they say that day alone, several thousand people were baptized.
- 1:54:17Speaker 2: And from that Pentecost Sunday, it's just this constant flow
- 1:54:24Speaker 2: of the grace of the Holy Spirit. As people are taught,
- 1:54:27Speaker 2: they receive the gift of faith They ask for baptism.
- 1:54:30Speaker 2: They're baptized and become members of the church's mystical body
- 1:54:39Speaker 2: of Christ.
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: So it grew exponentially after the resurrection.
- 1:54:42Speaker 2: I'm sorry?
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: It grew exponentially immediately after the resurrection.
- 1:54:46Speaker 2: Completely incredible and under persecution. It wasn't as if they
- 1:54:51Speaker 2: were free just to do whatever they wanted. Yes, they
- 1:54:55Speaker 2: did go out and preach fearlessly, but they were They
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: were persecuted for it. And there were many martyrs. I
- 1:55:02Speaker 2: say all the apostles except John were put to death.
- 1:55:06Speaker 2: But they went. We know that St. Thomas went as
- 1:55:09Speaker 2: far as India. They went all over the world to
- 1:55:13Speaker 2: bring the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. And yes,
- 1:55:20Speaker 2: it's really, that in itself is a miracle.
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: How long after his death did the apostles live?
- 1:55:36Speaker 2: They lived to be different ages. Some were martyred earlier,
- 1:55:39Speaker 2: some later. John, of course, wasn't martyred. He lived to
- 1:55:44Speaker 2: a good age.
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: And he's the one that didn't flee.
- 1:55:51Speaker 2: He didn't flee. He remained always with our Lord. He
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: seemed like maybe he was one of the younger apostles.
- 1:55:59Speaker 2: And that he was particularly devoted to our Lord and
- 1:56:03Speaker 2: that our Lord called him his beloved disciple. He had
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: a special closeness to our Lord. Somebody who you can
- 1:56:17Speaker 2: see from his gospel too understood very deeply who our
- 1:56:22Speaker 2: Lord was and what his mission was and was completely
- 1:56:27Speaker 2: invested in it.
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: How many times did he reappear?
- 1:56:35Speaker 2: That's a good question. Several times. Gosh, I don't know
- 1:56:43Speaker 2: the exact number, but I would think that it must
- 1:56:49Speaker 2: have been the ones, at least the accounts in the Gospels,
- 1:56:57Speaker 2: I would say 10 or 15 times.
- 1:56:59Speaker 1: 10 or 15 times. And the last time was when he.
- 1:57:04Speaker 2: When he ascended into heaven. Yes. We don't know the...
- 1:57:11Speaker 2: Because those... There are the accounts in the Gospels, but
- 1:57:17Speaker 2: he clearly could have appeared more times. Not all the
- 1:57:22Speaker 2: accounts are there. In fact... It says that he appeared
- 1:57:33Speaker 2: many times. For instance, there's no direct account of an
- 1:57:39Speaker 2: appearance to our Blessed Mother, but we can't help but
- 1:57:42Speaker 2: think that he surely appeared to her. The first appearance
- 1:57:49Speaker 2: was probably to our Blessed Mother, and then the other
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: ones that followed from it.
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: Why do you think there's no writings from Mary in
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: the New Testament?
- 1:57:59Speaker 2: I think that, first of all, she always presents herself
- 1:58:05Speaker 2: as the handmaid of the Lord, the one who's serving
- 1:58:11Speaker 2: him and I think that her account of his life
- 1:58:17Speaker 2: is the gospel according to St. John that she confided
- 1:58:23Speaker 2: to him so many things about our Lord's public ministries
- 1:58:30Speaker 2: His passion, his death, his resurrection, that's where we find
- 1:58:37Speaker 2: the last words we have from our Blessed Mother in
- 1:58:40Speaker 2: the Gospel at the wedding feast of Cana, the last
- 1:58:44Speaker 2: recorded words, because we have beautiful, for instance, when she
- 1:58:48Speaker 2: visited Elizabeth, she had conceived our Lord, and she learned
- 1:58:55Speaker 2: from the Archangel Gabriel that Elizabeth was pregnant with John
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: the Baptist, already six months pregnant, so she went immediately
- 1:59:02Speaker 2: to help her. And there's this beautiful, Elizabeth acknowledges her
- 1:59:11Speaker 2: as the mother redeemer, and then she has this beautiful prayer,
- 1:59:15Speaker 2: the Magnificat. But the last words is she's with Jesus
- 1:59:20Speaker 2: at the supper at Cana, the wedding feast of Cana,
- 1:59:25Speaker 2: and they run out of wine for the guests. And
- 1:59:29Speaker 2: she takes the wine stewards to our Lord and says
- 1:59:34Speaker 2: to them, do whatever he tells you. Those are her
- 1:59:36Speaker 2: last words. Those are beautiful words from our Blessed Mother.
- 1:59:42Speaker 2: Just remember that. Do whatever our Lord tells us. That's
- 1:59:46Speaker 2: what she's leading us to do.
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: When did we figure out he would come again? Did
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: he tell us that?
- 1:59:55Speaker 2: Yes. When he said, I will be with you until
- 1:59:58Speaker 2: the the last day to the end of the age,
- 2:00:02Speaker 2: end of time. And so, yes, he's promised to return
- 2:00:09Speaker 2: to us in glory on the last day.

- 2:03:18Speaker 2: other words, when our Lord comes to restore everything to
- 2:03:21Speaker 2: the Father... We'll be back in Eden. And as you
- 2:03:26Speaker 2: were saying earlier on, Adam and Eve were meant to
- 2:03:29Speaker 2: live forever. We will be in that state where we
- 2:03:33Speaker 2: will live forever. There will be no more sin or death.
- 2:03:39Speaker 2: And simply that joy, the eternal joy of being in
- 2:03:46Speaker 2: the company of God.
- 2:03:50Speaker 1: How did we get the book of Revelations?
- 2:03:52Speaker 2: St. John the Apostle had these visions at Patmos, the
- 2:03:57Speaker 2: island where he was living with our Blessed Mother. And
- 2:04:02Speaker 2: he describes right at the beginning of it how it
- 2:04:06Speaker 2: happened that he received these visions and he wrote them down.
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: What were they?
- 2:04:14Speaker 2: Some of them. Well, for instance, the vision of the...
- 2:04:20Speaker 2: of the coming of the Lord in glory to inaugurate
- 2:04:30Speaker 2: the wedding feast, his wedding feast at which all those
- 2:04:36Speaker 2: who are saved would take part. There are other visions
- 2:04:40Speaker 2: that are letters to the various important cities at that
- 2:04:46Speaker 2: time in the church. So there's quite a variety, but
- 2:04:54Speaker 2: the principal ones are of our Lord seated in glory,
- 2:05:00Speaker 2: returning to consummate his saving work by turning over all
- 2:05:08Speaker 2: being to the Father.
- 2:05:14Speaker 1: How does it end?
- 2:05:17Speaker 2: It's simply... From what we understand of the vision is
- 2:05:22Speaker 2: that our Lord himself descends to earth in his glory and...
- 2:05:29Speaker 2: In the flesh and blood. Yes, but glorified. Remember that
- 2:05:34Speaker 2: from the time of his resurrection is... And this is
- 2:05:37Speaker 2: something that's a mystery to us. We don't understand how
- 2:05:39Speaker 2: it is that it is his body, but it's his
- 2:05:46Speaker 2: glorified body. For instance, he can... pass from one place
- 2:05:51Speaker 2: to another without using a door. And this is recounted
- 2:05:57Speaker 2: in the scriptures. It's hard for us to understand that. Well,
- 2:06:04Speaker 2: of course, it's beyond our comprehension. It's not something we've experienced.
- 2:06:08Speaker 2: But the scriptures assure us that that is indeed what
- 2:06:12Speaker 2: will happen.
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: You know, a lot of people are scared of the
- 2:06:19Speaker 1: end times?
- 2:06:20Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:06:21Speaker 1: Should there be? No.
- 2:06:24Speaker 2: If one is striving to live a good and just life,
- 2:06:28Speaker 2: there's nothing about which to be afraid. Our Lord comes
- 2:06:37Speaker 2: to save all that is good and to save the just.
- 2:06:42Speaker 2: And so people... because we don't have an experience of this.
- 2:06:52Speaker 2: People are afraid of it, but we have the promises
- 2:06:56Speaker 2: of our Lord, and our Lord is never going to
- 2:07:01Speaker 2: deceive us. He's never going to tell us lies. And
- 2:07:04Speaker 2: so we know that he'll come to save the living
- 2:07:10Speaker 2: and the dead. And so we just have confidence. We
- 2:07:13Speaker 2: don't know what it will be, how it will be,
- 2:07:15Speaker 2: but we We have confidence that our Lord will be
- 2:07:17Speaker 2: true to his promises. People are oftentimes wanting to predict
- 2:07:30Speaker 2: when the world will come to an end. And I'm
- 2:07:32Speaker 2: sure you've heard this from time to time. People even say,
- 2:07:35Speaker 2: you know, what's going to happen in 1984 or something
- 2:07:39Speaker 2: like that. And they asked our Lord, and he said, Basically,
- 2:07:47Speaker 2: the response was, we shouldn't be worried about that. That's
- 2:07:52Speaker 2: the concern of God the Father. He will bring the
- 2:07:55Speaker 2: world to an end when the time is right. We
- 2:08:01Speaker 2: just have to be watching and ready to receive him
- 2:08:04Speaker 2: and to have our belts tightened and be looking for
- 2:08:10Speaker 2: our Lord, have our eyes fixed on him and waiting
- 2:08:12Speaker 2: for his coming. And he tells about the good and
- 2:08:20Speaker 2: faithful servants who, when the master returns, they're ready to
- 2:08:28Speaker 2: receive him. And that's how we should be, not worrying
- 2:08:33Speaker 2: about when it's going to happen, but only be concerned
- 2:08:36Speaker 2: that every day, every moment of the day, that we
- 2:08:40Speaker 2: are ready to receive our Lord, that we're looking for
- 2:08:43Speaker 2: him and that we welcome him with love. all our hearts.
- 2:08:52Speaker 2: I was quite sick a few years ago with this COVID.
- 2:08:55Speaker 2: It was in August of 2021. And it had a
- 2:09:03Speaker 2: very severe attack of an infection. I was taken to
- 2:09:06Speaker 2: the hospital and the doctors told me that I was dying.
- 2:09:12Speaker 2: And they asked, they wanted to put me on a ventilator.
- 2:09:16Speaker 2: They said that was the only hope they could have to,
- 2:09:21Speaker 2: to save me. And people said to me, well, when they,
- 2:09:25Speaker 2: they told you we're dying, weren't you terrified? And I said, no,
- 2:09:30Speaker 2: to be honest, I wasn't because I'm a priest. I
- 2:09:34Speaker 2: had been preparing at that time. I had been a
- 2:09:36Speaker 2: priest for, um, 46 years or I said, I've prepared
- 2:09:42Speaker 2: so many people to die, assisted them in dying. And
- 2:09:46Speaker 2: our Lord, uh, promises that those who die in him
- 2:09:51Speaker 2: will pass from this life to eternal life. So I
- 2:09:55Speaker 2: just understood that now my time had arrived. The only
- 2:10:03Speaker 2: thought I had was that I wasn't planning on dying,
- 2:10:07Speaker 2: and I was thinking of all the things that I
- 2:10:10Speaker 2: left undone, but I wasn't terrified at the idea of dying,
- 2:10:15Speaker 2: but simply that I wish I had been a little
- 2:10:17Speaker 2: better organized, so to speak. But that's the way we should,
- 2:10:21Speaker 2: I believe, that's the way we should live, that all
- 2:10:26Speaker 2: of us, this life is a pilgrimage. We're not meant
- 2:10:30Speaker 2: to be in this world forever. And so we should
- 2:10:38Speaker 2: be at peace and live in a way that we're
- 2:10:42Speaker 2: ready to meet our Lord.
- 2:10:43Speaker 1: Is heaven here?
- 2:10:47Speaker 2: No. Heaven, it will be a new heaven and a
- 2:10:53Speaker 2: new earth according to the Holy Scriptures.
- 2:10:57Speaker 1: So the earth will be transformed.
- 2:10:58Speaker 2: Exactly. So it won't be this world as we know it,
- 2:11:03Speaker 2: but transformed in a way that we can't know how
- 2:11:07Speaker 2: that is. Sometimes artists have attempted to express it, but
- 2:11:12Speaker 2: it's simply something... beyond anything we could imagine, but we
- 2:11:17Speaker 2: know that it will be, because it will be God
- 2:11:21Speaker 2: in his fullness, that it will be completely beautiful and
- 2:11:27Speaker 2: good and true.
- 2:11:29Speaker 1: So if you're living when it happens, does that mean
- 2:11:32Speaker 1: you will not die?
- 2:11:34Speaker 2: Yes, that means exactly that. You will be transformed as
- 2:11:38Speaker 2: a living. And this comes up, and people are asking
- 2:11:42Speaker 2: our Lord about... whether St. John, whether John, the beloved disciple,
- 2:11:51Speaker 2: would be, whether he was going to die and so forth.
- 2:12:01Speaker 2: Our Lord just simply says that when the, some will
- 2:12:08Speaker 2: be alive at the time, but all will be caught
- 2:12:12Speaker 2: up in life into heaven, into this new earth, which
- 2:12:20Speaker 2: will be the new heavens and new earth transformed, completely redeemed.
- 2:12:30Speaker 1: So it might be here.
- 2:12:32Speaker 2: Yes. Well, we have to say that our Lord, everything
- 2:12:39Speaker 2: that he makes that is good is enduring, and so
- 2:12:43Speaker 2: that In some way, he will make the goodness of
- 2:12:46Speaker 2: his creation, and his creation is good. We appreciate so
- 2:12:51Speaker 2: many good things. For instance, this beautiful place here in
- 2:12:55Speaker 2: Tennessee and other. So somehow all that goodness will endure,
- 2:13:02Speaker 2: but in a transformed way.
- 2:13:06Speaker 1: Do you think that the gateway to heaven is wide
- 2:13:10Speaker 1: or narrow?
- 2:13:14Speaker 2: Our Lord says it's narrow. I think he says that
- 2:13:18Speaker 2: to us because human beings have a tendency to be
- 2:13:22Speaker 2: presumptuous and to think, oh, I'll do whatever I want
- 2:13:27Speaker 2: and God will forgive me. We can never presume upon
- 2:13:35Speaker 2: the divine mercy. And so I always like to think
- 2:13:38Speaker 2: that we should think that we better be on our
- 2:13:47Speaker 2: best behavior and be always striving for that all of
- 2:13:55Speaker 2: us have our faults to be sure but we shouldn't
- 2:14:00Speaker 2: presume upon God's mercy but always have that genuine sorrow
- 2:14:06Speaker 2: for our sins and a desire to be more fully
- 2:14:13Speaker 2: a reflection of of the goodness of Christ. And in
- 2:14:18Speaker 2: that sense, I think it's narrow. On the other hand,
- 2:14:23Speaker 2: in the book of the Apocalypse, when it talks about
- 2:14:27Speaker 2: the great assembly of those who are saved, it says
- 2:14:32Speaker 2: that first are they 14,000 or 12,000 from each of
- 2:14:34Speaker 2: the 12 tribes of Israel, so many thousand from each
- 2:14:44Speaker 2: tribe of Israel. And then it says there was a
- 2:14:47Speaker 2: crowd of the same that's innumerable. And so I'm sure
- 2:14:55Speaker 2: that our Lord's mercy will be very abundant, but we
- 2:14:57Speaker 2: don't presume upon it. It's your kind, but I don't
- 2:15:05Speaker 2: presume upon your kindness by doing wicked things to you.
- 2:15:09Speaker 2: In other words... And so the same way, even with
- 2:15:15Speaker 2: our own parents, our parents are good to us. We
- 2:15:18Speaker 2: have great reverence for them. We don't want in any
- 2:15:21Speaker 2: way to displease them. We count upon them understanding and
- 2:15:27Speaker 2: forgiving us for our faults. But at the same time,
- 2:15:31Speaker 2: we have great reverence. With regard to our Lord, it's
- 2:15:35Speaker 2: called fear of the Lord, one of the seven gifts
- 2:15:38Speaker 2: of the Holy Spirit that we We recognize how infinitely
- 2:15:42Speaker 2: good God is, how he has done for us more
- 2:15:46Speaker 2: than was imaginable in his goodness, and therefore we want
- 2:15:54Speaker 2: to be our best, and we're sorry for the ways
- 2:15:57Speaker 2: in which we fail our Lord.
- 2:15:59Speaker 1: In a recent homily, you spoke about the call to
- 2:16:04Speaker 1: martyrdom in the family, in the family life. particularly for men,
- 2:16:10Speaker 1: as husbands, fathers, and leaders of the home, what does
- 2:16:13Speaker 1: it look like in practical terms to live out that
- 2:16:16Speaker 1: kind of sacrificial love for our wives, marriages, and children?
- 2:16:21Speaker 2: It means that a man has to strive to be
- 2:16:27Speaker 2: as virtuous as he can be, be a model for
- 2:16:32Speaker 2: his children, and in that way, to be a protector
- 2:16:35Speaker 2: of his wife. And St. Joseph is our great model
- 2:16:40Speaker 2: of this, how he protected always Mary and the child Jesus,
- 2:16:45Speaker 2: the flight into Egypt, the home of Nazareth. By his work,
- 2:16:51Speaker 2: he was a carpenter, construction, constructing buildings. So for a
- 2:17:03Speaker 2: man today in a society which... There's so much corruption.
- 2:17:09Speaker 2: I think today, for instance, the young people are assaulted
- 2:17:15Speaker 2: with this pornography, and it's so available to them. It's
- 2:17:21Speaker 2: on the phone, so they don't have to be particularly
- 2:17:25Speaker 2: clever to be exposed to this. And so fathers have
- 2:17:32Speaker 2: to be vigilant and insist with their children that what
- 2:17:37Speaker 2: is what is good and right for them and to
- 2:17:40Speaker 2: discipline them also when a child needs to be disciplined
- 2:17:44Speaker 2: to correct them. Sometimes people, they want to be pals
- 2:17:53Speaker 2: with their children. Well, a father is not called to
- 2:17:56Speaker 2: be a buddy of his children. He's called to be
- 2:18:01Speaker 2: the father, the secure guide, the protector. And so sometimes
- 2:18:05Speaker 2: he has to say no. And the You know, a
- 2:18:09Speaker 2: child might say, I hate you and run off and
- 2:18:12Speaker 2: hide in his room or something. But in the long run,
- 2:18:15Speaker 2: he's going to be very grateful to that father who
- 2:18:18Speaker 2: told him no before something that was not for his good.
- 2:18:22Speaker 2: And so we have to have the courage to say no.
- 2:18:27Speaker 2: And even when for a while our child or whoever
- 2:18:34Speaker 2: it is that we said no to dislikes us for it.
- 2:18:39Speaker 2: And I've had the experience, because I've lived a long
- 2:18:43Speaker 2: time as a priest and a bishop, of people writing
- 2:18:49Speaker 2: to me and telling me that they didn't understand something
- 2:18:55Speaker 2: that I did, especially as a bishop, but they wanted
- 2:18:59Speaker 2: to write and tell me that now they understand and
- 2:19:02Speaker 2: they thank me for insisting on whatever it was. And that's...
- 2:19:09Speaker 2: the way we should be as fathers too. We're in
- 2:19:13Speaker 2: this for the long haul, for eternal life, and therefore
- 2:19:18Speaker 2: we aren't looking for the immediate gratification of a child says, oh,
- 2:19:22Speaker 2: I love you, but we're looking for the long-term good
- 2:19:28Speaker 2: of that child and that the child will eventually understand
- 2:19:34Speaker 2: and be very grateful. The important thing is that we've
- 2:19:39Speaker 2: fulfilled our responsibility before God and in God to be
- 2:19:44Speaker 2: a father of a family.
- 2:19:45Speaker 1: I got a hot question for you. You ready?
- 2:19:54Speaker 2: I'm as ready as I am able to be.
- 2:19:59Speaker 1: Cardinal Burke, if demons are real, how can an ordinary
- 2:20:03Speaker 1: person actually fight them?
- 2:20:06Speaker 2: Only in Christ. And only Christ has the power to
- 2:20:14Speaker 2: repel demons, to cast them out, to get them away
- 2:20:18Speaker 2: from us. And in the church, we have the formal
- 2:20:22Speaker 2: prayers called exorcisms to drive away the demons. But those
- 2:20:29Speaker 2: prayers are all said in the name of Christ. The
- 2:20:32Speaker 2: priest never says, I. No, it's... It's Christ who drives
- 2:20:38Speaker 2: out the demons. We invoke St. Michael the Archangel and
- 2:20:43Speaker 2: so forth. And in Christ, even as we saw in
- 2:20:47Speaker 2: the Gospels, when our Lord cast out demons, demons can
- 2:20:51Speaker 2: be cast out, but only in him. If we would
- 2:20:56Speaker 2: presume to battle the devil on our own, we will
- 2:21:01Speaker 2: be defeated. This is a great temptation for exorcists, These
- 2:21:08Speaker 2: are the priests who are charged with saying the prayers
- 2:21:13Speaker 2: of the church to free people from the evil one,
- 2:21:19Speaker 2: either his obsession or his possession, even worse, of the person.
- 2:21:23Speaker 2: There's always the temptation. The exorcist is fighting this fight
- 2:21:28Speaker 2: with Christ, but he can be tempted to see it
- 2:21:30Speaker 2: as his battle, and I'm going to drive that devil out.
- 2:21:35Speaker 2: And that's... That's fatal, because we can't. They have powers
- 2:21:45Speaker 2: that we don't, preternatural powers, and only the supernatural power
- 2:21:49Speaker 2: of Christ himself can cast them out.
- 2:21:52Speaker 1: Did you see that a lot?
- 2:21:55Speaker 2: More than I would like. It seems in the present time,
- 2:21:59Speaker 2: and I know this from talking to Brother Bishops and
- 2:22:03Speaker 2: so forth and exorcists, there's a lot of demonic activity
- 2:22:09Speaker 2: going on. And I think part of it is that
- 2:22:15Speaker 2: there was a period, not in the so distant past,
- 2:22:20Speaker 2: where people said, oh, Christ has conquered Satan and so forth.
- 2:22:28Speaker 2: Nothing to worry about. Well, no, Christ has conquered him,
- 2:22:32Speaker 2: and he continues to conquer him. But Satan... continues to
- 2:22:38Speaker 2: prowl about the world as the letter of St. Peter says,
- 2:22:43Speaker 2: seeking whom he may devour. And Satan hates us because
- 2:22:48Speaker 2: we're made in the image and likeness of God and
- 2:22:50Speaker 2: we're destined to be with God. And he's rejected all
- 2:22:54Speaker 2: that and he's eternally damned. And so he's coming after people.
- 2:23:01Speaker 2: But if we pray, if we fortify ourselves with the sacraments,
- 2:23:07Speaker 2: if we take all the precautions with regard to the
- 2:23:12Speaker 2: evil one, we can be sure that our Lord won't
- 2:23:16Speaker 2: let him have power over us. But it's when we
- 2:23:20Speaker 2: begin to think, Satan is never happier than when we
- 2:23:25Speaker 2: think he's not around, because then he can really do damage.
- 2:23:31Speaker 2: We have to have our eyes wide open and see,
- 2:23:35Speaker 2: now this is something that's diabolical. And sadly, in the
- 2:23:40Speaker 2: world today, and even sometimes in the church, we see
- 2:23:43Speaker 2: things that are diabolical. They're so evil that they could
- 2:23:48Speaker 2: only come from the evil one himself.
- 2:23:52Speaker 1: Do you see a lot of exorcists that say, I
- 2:23:57Speaker 1: am the one that drove the demon out?
- 2:23:59Speaker 2: I have not encountered that myself. I do have known
- 2:24:05Speaker 2: exorcists but not because they were presumptuous, but because the
- 2:24:12Speaker 2: work is so intense and difficult, who've suffered in their health,
- 2:24:20Speaker 2: and it's a heroic thing. But no, I've really never
- 2:24:24Speaker 2: known an exorcist who did that.
- 2:24:28Speaker 1: What does Scripture say? Particularly Ephesians 6 and the armor
- 2:24:34Speaker 1: of God teach us about spiritual warfare. In what prayers
- 2:24:39Speaker 1: does the church give ordinary people to drive the devil
- 2:24:43Speaker 1: out of their lives and homes?
- 2:24:45Speaker 2: Well, the ordinary prayers are simply to call upon the Lord,
- 2:24:52Speaker 2: have mercy on us, to invoke St. Michael the Archangel
- 2:24:57Speaker 2: who is especially our advocate. It's the devil, St. Joseph,
- 2:25:02Speaker 2: the terror of demons, and of course, our Blessed Mother.
- 2:25:09Speaker 2: These are all ways in which we arm ourselves. We
- 2:25:13Speaker 2: put on the helmet of salvation in.
- 2:25:18Speaker 1: This.
- 2:25:20Speaker 2: What is spiritual warfare? There's no other way to describe it. St.
- 2:25:27Speaker 2: Paul at the end of his life is writing to St.
- 2:25:32Speaker 2: Timothy and he says time is coming and he said
- 2:25:40Speaker 2: I fought the good fight and I've stayed the course
- 2:25:46Speaker 2: so we have the military image we have the athletic
- 2:25:50Speaker 2: image then I've kept the faith in other words that
- 2:25:54Speaker 2: he He trusted in our Lord, stayed close to our Lord,
- 2:25:57Speaker 2: and therefore every day he soldiered.
- 2:25:59Speaker 1: On in.
- 2:26:01Speaker 2: His life. And then he says, for the rest, there
- 2:26:06Speaker 2: is the glory that the Lord has reserved to those
- 2:26:12Speaker 2: who love him.
- 2:26:17Speaker 1: For the person watching who has never prayed a rosary
- 2:26:19Speaker 1: in their life, walk them through it. What should they
- 2:26:23Speaker 1: do tonight?
- 2:26:24Speaker 2: Well, the first thing to do is to understand that
- 2:26:29Speaker 2: the rosary is really a gospel prayer. It's the repetition
- 2:26:34Speaker 2: of the Hail Mary. The first part of the Hail
- 2:26:38Speaker 2: Mary is taken directly. Hail Mary, full of grace, are
- 2:26:43Speaker 2: the words of the Archangel Gabriel to the Blessed Mother
- 2:26:49Speaker 2: of the Lord is with you. Blessed are Thou among women.
- 2:26:52Speaker 2: Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, the words of Elizabeth.
- 2:26:55Speaker 2: And then we add, Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray
- 2:26:59Speaker 2: for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
- 2:27:01Speaker 2: It's a beautiful prayer, and we pray it while meditating
- 2:27:09Speaker 2: on a mystery in the life of our Lord, of
- 2:27:13Speaker 2: our Blessed Mother. Traditionally, there were 15 mysteries, the joyful mysteries,
- 2:27:21Speaker 2: Sorrowful Mysteries and the Glorious Mysteries, and Pope St. John
- 2:27:24Speaker 2: Paul II added five more. But anyway, so we take,
- 2:27:28Speaker 2: and the beads are important because they help us to
- 2:27:31Speaker 2: stay on course with the prayer. We begin with the
- 2:27:35Speaker 2: Apostles' Creed. We say our Father and three Hail Marys
- 2:27:40Speaker 2: for that this prayer will increase in us faith, hope,
- 2:27:45Speaker 2: and charity. And we always pray for our Holy Father,
- 2:27:49Speaker 2: for the Pope. And then we begin whatever, usually on Monday,
- 2:27:54Speaker 2: on Sunday and Wednesday, we pray the glorious mysteries. And
- 2:28:06Speaker 2: on Monday, joyful. Tuesday, the sorrowful mysteries. Thursday, these luminous
- 2:28:12Speaker 2: mysteries that Pope St. John Paul II gave us. Then Friday, again,
- 2:28:18Speaker 2: the sorrowful mysteries. And then on Saturday, the joyful mysteries again.
- 2:28:22Speaker 2: And so let's take, for instance, the first glorious mystery
- 2:28:28Speaker 2: is the resurrection of our Lord And so we take
- 2:28:34Speaker 2: into our mind what is the resurrection. Sometimes people even
- 2:28:40Speaker 2: read a little verse from the scripture about it. And
- 2:28:43Speaker 2: then we say this prayer just trying to, we say,
- 2:28:48Speaker 2: and our Father in 10 Hail Marys and a glory be,
- 2:28:52Speaker 2: just simply reflecting on our life in Christ as we
- 2:28:55Speaker 2: see it in his resurrection. Then the next mystery is
- 2:28:58Speaker 2: the ascension. Then the descent of the Holy Spirit upon
- 2:29:02Speaker 2: the apostles. And you see how that fits in so
- 2:29:06Speaker 2: much with our conversation about the gospel today. You see
- 2:29:09Speaker 2: how it's really a gospel prayer. And then the assumption
- 2:29:16Speaker 2: of our Blessed Mother. And then her coronation as Queen
- 2:29:20Speaker 2: of Heaven and Earth. So those are glorious mysteries. Then
- 2:29:23Speaker 2: we have the joyful mysteries, the Annunciation, Archangel Gabriel appearing
- 2:29:27Speaker 2: to Mary. the visitation, Mary visits St. Elizabeth, the birth
- 2:29:33Speaker 2: of our Lord, the Nativity, his presentation in the temple,
- 2:29:37Speaker 2: and then the finding of our Lord in the temple
- 2:29:40Speaker 2: at the age of 12. You see how wonderful this
- 2:29:43Speaker 2: is because we're getting, drawing ever closer to the mystery
- 2:29:49Speaker 2: of our Lord's saving work. And by repeating this prayer
- 2:29:54Speaker 2: over and over, this strengthens us in that reflection. And
- 2:29:59Speaker 2: then the Sorrowful Mysteries, the Agony in the Garden, the
- 2:30:03Speaker 2: Scourging at the Pillar, the Crowning with Thorns, Caring of
- 2:30:06Speaker 2: the Cross, and the Crucifixion. And then the New Luminous
- 2:30:10Speaker 2: Mysteries are the Baptism of Our Lord, the Wedding Feast
- 2:30:15Speaker 2: at Cana, His Proclamation of the Kingdom, the Transfiguration, and
- 2:30:21Speaker 2: then the Institution of the Holy Eucharist. And I always...
- 2:30:25Speaker 2: like to think too of the Holy Priesthood as we
- 2:30:28Speaker 2: were talking about before. So this is a powerful prayer
- 2:30:32Speaker 2: given by Our Lady to St. Dominic. A powerful way
- 2:30:37Speaker 2: for us to draw near to Our Lord through the
- 2:30:42Speaker 2: intercession of Our Blessed Mother so that we can live
- 2:30:46Speaker 2: more fully in Him. I don't know if that helps.
- 2:30:51Speaker 1: It absolutely helps. Thank you.
- 2:30:54Speaker 2: But get the Get rosary beads because that helps you
- 2:30:57Speaker 2: to count the prayers and so forth. But it's a
- 2:31:01Speaker 2: very concrete. Rosary beads are not magical, but many people
- 2:31:09Speaker 2: are buried with the rosary in their hands. And it's
- 2:31:12Speaker 2: not because of some magic, but it's simply a concrete
- 2:31:19Speaker 2: sign of the power of prayer. And so it's always
- 2:31:22Speaker 2: good to have a rosary in your pocket.
- 2:31:27Speaker 1: Makes sense. I got mine right here.
- 2:31:28Speaker 2: Good for you.
- 2:31:34Speaker 1: You've heard me talk about Caldera Lab before. And lately,
- 2:31:37Speaker 1: the product I've been reaching for the most is the good.
- 2:31:41Speaker 1: Between being a dad... Hosting the show, traveling, training, and
- 2:31:45Speaker 1: trying to keep up with everything else. I don't have
- 2:31:48Speaker 1: time for some complicated skincare routine. I don't want 10 steps.
- 2:31:52Speaker 1: I don't want a cabinet full of products. And I
- 2:31:54Speaker 1: don't want something that takes a bunch of time every
- 2:31:57Speaker 1: morning and every night. I just want one simple product
- 2:32:00Speaker 1: that actually does something. That's what I like about the good.
- 2:32:03Speaker 1: It's an antioxidant-rich facial oil serum made specifically for men's skin.
- 2:32:09Speaker 1: The good is formulated with 27 botanicals, and it's designed
- 2:32:14Speaker 1: to help deeply moisturize, support skin recovery, even skin tone,
- 2:32:19Speaker 1: and visibly reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. For me,
- 2:32:23Speaker 1: the biggest thing is that my skin doesn't look as
- 2:32:25Speaker 1: dry or worn down. It feels softer, smoother. and just
- 2:32:29Speaker 1: looks healthier. And the results back it up. 96% reported
- 2:32:34Speaker 1: healthier looking skin, 91% reported less dryness, and 89% showed
- 2:32:39Speaker 1: improved radiance and luminosity. If you're looking for one simple

- 2:33:44Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:33:45Speaker 1: Our Lady of Guadalupe.
- 2:33:47Speaker 2: Yes. I wondered if I could do... present you with
- 2:33:52Speaker 2: a special gift in honor of these conversations. We've had
- 2:33:56Speaker 2: an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a reproduction. This
- 2:34:00Speaker 2: is done digitally, so it's very authentic. This is how
- 2:34:08Speaker 2: Our Lady appeared to a Native American, Juan Diego, in 1531.
- 2:34:13Speaker 2: And you can see that she appears as the woman
- 2:34:19Speaker 2: in the apocalypse, the woman clothed with the sun, with
- 2:34:22Speaker 2: the moon under her feet, and with stars over her head.
- 2:34:25Speaker 2: And then on her garment and so forth are all
- 2:34:31Speaker 2: symbols from that ancient world, but all will point to
- 2:34:36Speaker 2: the reality that she is the mother of God. So
- 2:34:40Speaker 2: it's a very powerful apparition that took place from December
- 2:34:43Speaker 2: 9th to the 12th in 1531. And I wanted you
- 2:34:47Speaker 2: to have this as a reminder of how close Our
- 2:34:53Speaker 2: Lady is to you and how she wants to bring Christ.
- 2:34:57Speaker 2: She says that she's come. She appears at San Juan Diego.
- 2:35:01Speaker 2: She says, I'm the mother of God. I want a
- 2:35:04Speaker 2: little chapel to be built where I can bring my
- 2:35:07Speaker 2: children to my divine son who alone is our hope
- 2:35:11Speaker 2: and our salvation. And of course, we're coming now. 1531
- 2:35:17Speaker 2: 2031 will be 500 years so we're preparing I founded
- 2:35:24Speaker 2: a shrine to our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse
- 2:35:26Speaker 2: Wisconsin we're doing a five year preparation and each year
- 2:35:31Speaker 2: we're reflecting on one of the mysteries in the life
- 2:35:34Speaker 2: of our Blessed Mother starting with her Immaculate Conception with
- 2:35:38Speaker 2: her Perpetual Virginity her Divine Maternity her Assumption and then
- 2:35:45Speaker 2: her Mediation of of all graces. And so we'll be
- 2:35:50Speaker 2: giving all this attention to our Blessed Mother in order
- 2:35:54Speaker 2: to draw closer to our Lord. And I want to
- 2:35:59Speaker 2: invite you in a special way to visit the Shrine
- 2:36:02Speaker 2: of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse. It's not
- 2:36:05Speaker 2: so far from Tennessee. And then eventually the Visitor's Shrine
- 2:36:10Speaker 2: in Mexico City where you can see the actual, the
- 2:36:13Speaker 2: miracle of this too. There's much to say, and I
- 2:36:16Speaker 2: don't want to go on and on, but the miracle
- 2:36:20Speaker 2: of this apparition is, there are many miraculous aspects, but
- 2:36:25Speaker 2: our Lord left the image on this mantle of St.
- 2:36:30Speaker 2: Juan Diego. He was wearing the typical dress of the time,
- 2:36:35Speaker 2: and when the bishop asked him for a sign, he
- 2:36:39Speaker 2: went and said, Our Lady appeared to me. She wants
- 2:36:42Speaker 2: this chapel, and he said, Well, you'd bring a sign
- 2:36:44Speaker 2: for Our Lady. Well, she had roses bloom in the
- 2:36:48Speaker 2: middle of winter on this craggy hill where you wouldn't
- 2:36:54Speaker 2: find any flowers. And so Our Lady put them in
- 2:36:59Speaker 2: his mantle. When he opened the mantle up for the bishop,
- 2:37:03Speaker 2: the flowers fell out, but then her image appeared. And
- 2:37:05Speaker 2: that image is still on that garment today in the
- 2:37:09Speaker 2: Basilica in Mexico City. And it's a cactus cloth garment.
- 2:37:13Speaker 2: It should have disintegrated within 30 or 40 years. And instead,
- 2:37:18Speaker 2: it's still miraculously preserved.
- 2:37:21Speaker 1: Wow.
- 2:37:21Speaker 2: Thank you. Oh, you're most welcome. it's a and i've
- 2:37:26Speaker 2: brought a book to you from about the shrine but
- 2:37:29Speaker 2: there are many wonderful uh accounts and millions of people
- 2:37:35Speaker 2: were converted uh to to christ as a result of
- 2:37:39Speaker 2: her apparition millions of millions literally millions well.
- 2:37:43Speaker 1: I think we are all Already working with your team
- 2:37:46Speaker 1: to do your life story and talk all about this
- 2:37:48Speaker 1: up at the shrine that you started.
- 2:37:50Speaker 2: Well, that would be wonderful. Anything we can do to
- 2:37:54Speaker 2: help Our Lady. We call ourselves Our Lady's Messengers. We're
- 2:37:58Speaker 2: the Juan Diego's who are going out and bringing the
- 2:38:02Speaker 2: message of Our Lord that she wants us to deliver.
- 2:38:05Speaker 1: This is beautiful. Thank you.
- 2:38:09Speaker 2: Oh, you're most welcome.
- 2:38:11Speaker 1: It'll be hanging up right in here.
- 2:38:13Speaker 2: Okay. That's wonderful. She'll be a good protector.
- 2:38:26Speaker 1: So Cardinal Burke, we've wrapped up the Old Testament, the
- 2:38:31Speaker 1: New Testament. I think the overall arc of the New
- 2:38:37Speaker 1: Testament is definitely the Resurrection.
- 2:38:45Speaker 2: I know that the passion is to be followed. There
- 2:38:54Speaker 2: is to be a movie now coming out on the resurrection,
- 2:38:59Speaker 2: and I think it should be coming out soon, but
- 2:39:02Speaker 2: I hope this is good.
- 2:39:04Speaker 1: Next Easter.
- 2:39:05Speaker 2: Next Easter, okay.
- 2:39:07Speaker 1: Easter of 2027, from what I understand.
- 2:39:09Speaker 2: Yes, but that is....
- 2:39:12Speaker 1: And then 40, it's a two-part series. Oh. Then the
- 2:39:15Speaker 1: next one is 40 days after that.
- 2:39:17Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:39:18Speaker 1: From what I understand.
- 2:39:20Speaker 2: Well, the resurrection, of course, it's the moment of the resurrection,
- 2:39:26Speaker 2: but then it's the apparitions that follow and then the ascension.
- 2:39:32Speaker 2: So that's very good if they're doing that. And so
- 2:39:37Speaker 2: I hope that that, I'm sure God will bless that work.
- 2:39:48Speaker 1: So after this two-part interview series, the Bible can be
- 2:39:53Speaker 1: very intimidating for a newbie like myself to get through it.
- 2:40:00Speaker 1: And that's why I'm doing this series. It started yesterday,
- 2:40:04Speaker 1: but as I mentioned, we'll go through every single book
- 2:40:07Speaker 1: in the Bible.
- 2:40:08Speaker 2: Oh, that's great. I always say to people, just sit
- 2:40:14Speaker 2: down and start, for instance, with the Gospels. and just
- 2:40:19Speaker 2: take it a little at a time. It's the word
- 2:40:22Speaker 2: of God, and people, if they do that, they get
- 2:40:26Speaker 2: very much at home with it, and then they want
- 2:40:29Speaker 2: to go more and more even into some of the
- 2:40:32Speaker 2: books of the Bible that are more difficult. And so, yes,
- 2:40:37Speaker 2: and that you're going to do every book of the Bible,
- 2:40:40Speaker 2: I think that's wonderful.
- 2:40:41Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 2:40:43Speaker 2: I'll be praying for that, that God bless that, and
- 2:40:46Speaker 2: that all your hearers all your listeners and their lives
- 2:40:51Speaker 2: will be enriched.
- 2:40:53Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 2:40:54Speaker 2: You're welcome.
- 2:40:55Speaker 1: Thank you for being here.
- 2:40:56Speaker 2: You're most welcome.
- 2:40:57Speaker 1: Can we end with a prayer?
- 2:40:58Speaker 2: Surely. In the name of the Father and of the
- 2:41:01Speaker 2: Son and of the Holy Spirit, amen. Almighty God, we
- 2:41:06Speaker 2: give you thanks for this time, blessed time we've had
- 2:41:10Speaker 2: together to come to know more deeply your divinely inspired
- 2:41:17Speaker 2: word as it comes to us in the Holy Scriptures.
- 2:41:20Speaker 2: And we ask you to bless us now as we
- 2:41:23Speaker 2: strive to deepen our knowledge of the Holy Scriptures and
- 2:41:27Speaker 2: therefore our knowledge and love of you. We ask this
- 2:41:34Speaker 2: in our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who is with
- 2:41:37Speaker 2: you in the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.
- 2:41:42Speaker 2: Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us. St. Joseph, terror
- 2:41:46Speaker 2: of demons, pray for us. In the name of the Father,
- 2:41:50Speaker 2: and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
- 2:41:55Speaker 1: Thank you. No matter where you're watching The Sean Ryan
