- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. And it's a Friday, so it's
- 0:14Yvonne, too. Hello honey, good to have you at
- 0:17the microphone with me. I'm here, ready.
- 0:20Yay for Fridays. So what do you think of being a
- 0:24pastor's wife? Well, that's something new for
- 0:28us. How?
- 0:29Excitement. It is.
- 0:31How exciting is that? A throwback to Kath and Kim.
- 0:35I think so, yeah. OK, that's showing my age, isn't
- 0:39it? Wow, look at you go, yeah, this
- 0:41is you're going to rock at this role, Just FYI.
- 0:44I'm going to muddle through out the front as minister and you
- 0:47are just going to nail it, being that kind, compassionate, bubbly
- 0:51person that everyone just adores.
- 0:53OK, that's very sweet of you, but I don't know how this ended
- 0:56up being a conversation about me.
- 0:58All right. Let's make it less about you
- 1:00then. That would make it more
- 1:01comfortable. We're going to read Proverbs and
- 1:04we are cracking open a new book of not a new book, a new chapter
- 1:08of Proverbs beginning the 21st. And we have got exactly one more
- 1:13year. It will be all the way up to the
- 1:16end of January next year. And then we will, I think we are
- 1:20going to dive back into Psalms. We'll get to do call and
- 1:22response Psalms together each Friday.
- 1:24How good will that? Be OK.
- 1:25That's a lot. We're looking forward.
- 1:26That's awesome. But we're going to get way
- 1:28smarter between now and then. By or not smarter, wiser.
- 1:32So let us dive in together and let's read Proverbs 21, verses 1
- 1:37to 6. The King's heart is like a
- 1:50stream of water directed by the Lord.
- 1:53He guides it wherever he pleases.
- 1:57People may be right in their own eyes, but the Lord examines
- 2:00their heart. The Lord is more pleased when we
- 2:05do what is right and just than when we offer Him sacrifices.
- 2:11Haughty eyes, a proud heart, and evil actions are all sin.
- 2:18Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty
- 2:22shortcuts lead to poverty. Wealth created by a lying tongue
- 2:29is a vanishing mist and a deadly trap.
- 2:35And again, the King's heart is like a stream of water directed
- 2:40by the Lord. He guides it wherever he
- 2:42pleases. People may be right in their own
- 2:47eyes, but the Lord examines their heart.
- 2:52The Lord is more pleased when we do what is right and just than
- 2:56when we offer Him sacrifices. Haughty eyes, a proud heart, and
- 3:03evil actions are all sin. Good planning and hard work lead
- 3:09to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.
- 3:14Wealth created by a lying tongue is a vanishing mist and a deadly
- 3:19trap. So much wisdom.
- 3:31Well, the more proverbs that we read here.
- 3:33I'm just struck by these recurring themes that keep
- 3:37happening week after week or over the course of our time in
- 3:41Proverbs. Absolute.
- 3:42And the thing that really stood out to me today, which is one of
- 3:45those themes, is where it says the Lord is more pleased when we
- 3:49do what is right and just than when we offer him sacrifices.
- 3:53You know, where so often worried about doing what will look good
- 3:57and what will look appropriate, but God is actually really
- 4:01interested in us being just and upright.
- 4:04And then it goes on to talk about these haughty eyes and a
- 4:06proud heart, you know, these things that we think are OK
- 4:09because they're the quiet little ways that we are.
- 4:12But actually, no, that's that's not what he wants from us.
- 4:15It's really shaping our character, isn't it?
- 4:18All these proverbs just look helping us be having a character
- 4:22that is more after God. Yeah, that's beautiful.
- 4:27Well, Lord, may this wisdom continue to shape our character,
- 4:31and may our character be one that is wise.
- 4:35Not wise as in wisdom of the world, but wise that knows our
- 4:41place in you and in your Kingdom as a loved and forgiving child
- 4:47of a gracious and loving God who calls us to be in that same way,
- 4:53gracious, loving and upright. So, Lord, continue your work of
- 4:58transformation in US and thank you for these beautiful gifts,
- 5:02these proverbs that we can read. We thank you and we praise you
- 5:07and we pray all of this in the name of Jesus, Amen.
- 5:10Amen.
