Transcript
- 0:00John Summers is the motoring historian.
- 0:02He was a company car thrashing, technology sales rep that turned into
- 0:06a fairly inept sports bike rider.
- 0:08Hailing from California, he collects cars and bikes built with plenty of
- 0:12cheap and fast, and not much reliable.
- 0:15On his show, he gets together with various co hosts to talk about new
- 0:18and old cars, driving, motorbikes, motor racing and motoring travel.
- 0:32Good day.
- 0:33Good morning.
- 0:34Good afternoon.
- 0:35It is John Summers, the history vendor.
- 0:39That's a bit silly, that doesn't it?
- 0:41But anyway, um, look, um, I have split, um, I did one long recording, didn't I?
- 0:49And, and episode 11 was the first half of it.
- 0:52And now this one, episode 12 is the second half of this one long recording.
- 0:57Um, Yeah, so that's what the backstory and, and I'm just
- 1:01gonna drop you straight in.
- 1:04The next item on my agenda, the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
- 1:10Yeah, I mean it was good.
- 1:14We got a bit lucky with the weather, given Saturday was cancelled.
- 1:18Um Why we went on the high winds, wind and rain.
- 1:23Yeah.
- 1:24Friday was a bit of a washout.
- 1:25It was bucketing it down quite heavily.
- 1:28And I think with the wind getting up for the Saturday, they were like, no, it's
- 1:30going to be easier to just scratch it.
- 1:32Um, and then have the Sunday.
- 1:34So yeah, I mean, look, the Thursdays, it was a little bit quieter.
- 1:37I mean, you wouldn't know it from the crowds now.
- 1:39I mean, I've only been going for like the last three years running and.
- 1:42Each year is noticeably busy.
- 1:45Um, but it was lovely.
- 1:46I mean, it's, it's, um, some quality stuff.
- 1:49I mean, again, you can't see, you can technically see everything in a day,
- 1:53but I mean, it's, I can't be bothered to charge around and be quite that
- 1:57diligent with checking in on everything.
- 1:59So, um, yeah, I went with my brother and a friend, a friend from work.
- 2:04Um, well, a friend, uh, Jabra that I, that I, um, we sold to
- 2:09at his concert subsequently.
- 2:10And now, now mate, yeah.
- 2:11Um, and, uh, yeah, no, we, and he took his lad, it was his son's 16th birthday
- 2:16the day before, so he still counted as a junior in, um, uh, Goodwood's eyes.
- 2:22And, uh, it was quite interesting.
- 2:24They both, they both said to me in the drive, he came to my place and we drove
- 2:28down in one car and, um, they both said to me that they, the, the car that they're
- 2:34most passionate about is the Metro 6R4.
- 2:37They only wanted to see a 6R4.
- 2:39Could I guarantee there wasn't gonna be a 6R4?
- 2:40I was like, well, no, I mean, if you ask me to guess, will there be one?
- 2:45I would say, yeah, there probably will be.
- 2:47There was last year.
- 2:49If I recollect certainly in the paddock, there was one kicking around.
- 2:51I think it was the computer vision blue one.
- 2:53If I recollect, um, is the ironic livery.
- 2:57Yeah, well, long story short, we got for about half nine.
- 3:03Um, and in the second bunch of cars that went up, there were two Metro six off.
- 3:09So they, they, they, uh, the, including the computer vision one and a red
- 3:13one, I think a red and white one.
- 3:15Um.
- 3:15But yeah, so they thoroughly enjoyed that.
- 3:18Um, and then they went off and did their thing.
- 3:20They went up to the rally stage.
- 3:21I hung around with my bra for the day, which was great.
- 3:24Um, it, it, it, it's, it's, I mean, slightly, uh, you're slightly coddled as a
- 3:30member on the basis that it, when everyone looking at you, getting to lunchtime,
- 3:33you think, oh, yeah, it's a bit peckish.
- 3:35And you look around at the food stalls and there's queues sort of 30 or 40 length.
- 3:40You think, oh, and then I'm a bit on set.
- 3:42I'm a member here.
- 3:43So we wandered around to the, we've, and as it happened, I looked around
- 3:46and said, where's the members?
- 3:47Just a bit.
- 3:48And it was about 50 yards away.
- 3:50So Jamie, I can sign one person in.
- 3:52So Jamie and I went and ate there where the queue was too deep.
- 3:55And we had, uh, so we're able to sit at a nice table and, uh, it
- 4:00was, it was much more relaxed.
- 4:02As we pointed out, my brother said to me, now this is more what I,
- 4:05this is more what I'm talking about.
- 4:06Um, so we had a thoroughly nice afternoon.
- 4:09I mean, look, my highlights in terms of cars getting back on track,
- 4:12the McLaren livery on that P1.
- 4:15You have to.
- 4:16Well, no, but the McLaren, the, sorry, the, the, um, the Marlborough aping
- 4:21livery on that McLaren P1 was fabulous.
- 4:24Um, looked amazing.
- 4:27Um, I like the RS that, and that, that Targa turbo 911 as well.
- 4:33Um, the car that I was most excited to see, I don't think I actually
- 4:36saw the, uh, the, um, what is it?
- 4:38The Ioniq N, which for, uh, Anyone who hasn't, I mean, I'm not that bothered
- 4:42about electric cars, but I like electric cars when they do electric, if you know
- 4:46what I mean, when they do their own thing and don't try and be a different,
- 4:50so what I like about what Hyundai have done is, uh, they've aped gears, so
- 4:56they've set the torque up in order to give you a gearing feel, so that you can,
- 5:02you know, rattle through the gears and have fun with it, and because it's an
- 5:05electric car, uh, and it's a prototype, And because they have a sense of humor,
- 5:09evidently, you can change the sound that you have in the car, so you can have a V8
- 5:15roar if you want, but also you can have a jet engine sound from an F from an F
- 5:2118, like from Maverick's movie, and then when you shift gear, you get a sonic boom
- 5:26effect through the, through the, I mean, cool, you know, if you're going to do,
- 5:30if you're going to be electric, do your own thing, like the GTR, you know, do
- 5:33something different and do it your way.
- 5:35So, Yeah.
- 5:35Um, I, I tried to make it light and I do think the, the, the ability to be
- 5:41an all rounder and there's like some kind of humor and, and, um, it's not
- 5:48my thing, but it is seemingly going to form part of the culture of performance.
- 5:56He beeps.
- 5:56Yeah.
- 5:57I mean, it's, it's, I think it's, it's not a sort of there from what I saw from
- 6:01the spec sheet and I read the article and I've seen, looked at the car and stuff.
- 6:05It's like 300 and something horsepower.
- 6:07So not the usual electric.
- 6:08Oh, we've given it 4 gazillion horsepower.
- 6:11It's 300 and something.
- 6:13So plenty, you know, but sort of reflective of where you, where
- 6:16current hot hatchbacks are, the golf current golf, ours, three, dirty three
- 6:2040, something like that, I think.
- 6:22So in that sort of bracket, you know, um, so yeah, I mean, it's,
- 6:26uh, it, it looked quite fun.
- 6:28I was interested to see it properly.
- 6:29It didn't really get a proper chance to have a look at it.
- 6:31But um, no, it was cool.
- 6:32Um, and it's it's good wood.
- 6:34So the fact that you can go and look at the sort of The Elf Reno Formula
- 6:38One cars, and there isn't just one, there's like three parked next to each
- 6:43other and you can go and stand and take photos inside and look at the gear
- 6:46shift and look at, you know, there's a little tag on the steering wheel that
- 6:50says good battery in this one, okay, um, so these are being coddled in a way
- 6:55that you would hope they would be, um, yeah, it's a cracking day, I recommend
- 7:00it to everyone, it's different from the members meeting, I still prefer the
- 7:02members meeting because I like to see it.
- 7:04them out there racing.
- 7:06But, you know, anyone who watched Jenson Button's four billion, you know, he
- 7:11had the NASCAR that he took to Le Mans.
- 7:13And, uh, I mean, if you haven't seen his rolling burnout that
- 7:16takes about 10 minutes for him to get up level with the house.
- 7:20It's virtually a burnout all the way from the start finish.
- 7:24He's just rolling and there's just clouds and clouds of smoke.
- 7:28Um, uh, you know, there, there's fun.
- 7:31Had, um, Hyundai, uh, notably smashed one of their concept cars into the, into
- 7:36the, into the hay bales wrecking it.
- 7:39Um, someone smashed, uh, I think the wing off a, of the CLK gtr, one
- 7:45that got dinked into the hay bales.
- 7:47Someone lost the arse of it in the wet and smacked that.
- 7:50There was a couple of other significant casualties in
- 7:53terms of body damage as well.
- 7:55Yeah, they do because I don't have much of a presence on Twitter, but I did see
- 8:00a clip of film of somebody binning the, um, that the Leighton house, remember
- 8:06the early Adrian Newey design marches that were March and then Leighton house.
- 8:12And I guess I.
- 8:14At the time, I didn't know who Leighton House were, but it was
- 8:16basically some kind of house of cards, Japanese property company.
- 8:21So they were super like, they were almost like rich energy, you know, that kind
- 8:26of utter, you know, house of cards.
- 8:28Now I'm not, I probably slandered Leighton House there, but I drill into
- 8:33it that Leighton House were worth it.
- 8:34Anyway, this was the car and on the approach to the
- 8:37little, like, left righty bit.
- 8:40Um, he lost the back and binned it into the, into the scenery.
- 8:45I am Matthew Hopkins, Witchfinder.
- 9:21So I spent some time in Connecticut, uh, and up and New York recently.
- 9:26Um, I was there because, you know, there's a chance that we might move there.
- 9:34Um, I had this Nissan Altima, um, you know, in the past they've had a CVT.
- 9:42Um, I don't know if it had a CVT, but it was a lot better than
- 9:45other ones I've, I've driven.
- 9:47For uh, for what it's worth, it was really quite uh, inoffensive, you know,
- 9:52nice, incredibly forgettable, but quite a nice piece of, of, of kit to use.
- 9:58The most memorable thing is that big grill with the slitty eyes that everyone
- 10:03seems to be doing now that implies that everybody's driving a Camaro or a hot rod
- 10:08Audi, but actually you've just got like, you know, uh, Altima, but you know, I, I
- 10:13got on all right with it, but uh, yeah, um, There's something about that part of
- 10:20New England that brings out the rebel.
- 10:22in me.
- 10:24I just want to fight the system.
- 10:26It's, it's, and it's summed up by a conversation I had with Ollie, which is
- 10:31that there's all this, there's all these houses that are set in all this grassland,
- 10:36you know, and then there's another one and another one, but they're all like enormous
- 10:41houses, six bedroom, five bathrooms, nice design, you know, like, but that's that.
- 10:47And they're all like a long way apart with these rowing.
- 10:50So Ollie's like, well, look at all this grass.
- 10:52Could I, yeah.
- 10:53ride my dirt bike and I'm like, uh, maybe if it was ours and my
- 10:59wife's like, no, you're not allowed.
- 11:02So that's what it's summed up by, right?
- 11:04It's summed up by the fact that there's all this, there's all this
- 11:08grass, but it's not for riding on.
- 11:10It's for looking at.
- 11:17So I mean, I said to Dana, I said to Dana, it would be all right.
- 11:21I'd be all right for like a month or so.
- 11:23And then one day you would get a phone call and it would be the police and they
- 11:28would say that there's been an accident.
- 11:31That one of these houses that's 300 yards from the road has
- 11:34my Mustang embedded in it.
- 11:37And that turn, that isn't really a turn at 90 miles an hour, but 120 is a turn.
- 11:44, you know, that's, that's how it would go.
- 11:47I would, I would like, it would come out like that.
- 11:49I would like, I, I, I'm like, I feel like I, yeah.
- 11:53I, it's like, I, I dunno what to say.
- 11:55You can see, I can't even find the words now to describe how, um.
- 12:01Yeah, it's um, I love the fact that here in California you can
- 12:08wear flip flops and a t shirt.
- 12:10Um, I don't like the fact that you can't do that in other places.
- 12:14It's, it almost begins and ends there.
- 12:16But this, this stupid class p rattling wasn't really what I was,
- 12:22uh, was, was getting at with this.
- 12:24I was thinking that pulled over at the side of the road in a
- 12:26particularly picturesque spot thinking it's so beautiful.
- 12:29And, you know, I know like the weather in the winter's terrible,
- 12:32but you know, like, you know, but I just can't do this like sheer like.
- 12:38What Dana calls stick up the of uh of of the whole of of New England
- 12:45and then I'm looking in the rear view and there's an Aston Martin V8
- 12:50Vantage coming on this country road.
- 12:52No other cars have passed me.
- 12:53It's a twenty five mile an hour limit.
- 12:55It's and dummy if it's not an E plate.
- 12:58Here we are in New England but this car is just wearing an English number
- 13:03plate and he comes on by and it is a proper like last of the line.
- 13:10The eight vantage on a E registration British play, um, didn't catch the So when
- 13:19he goes on by, I just, I just follow it and over the plate at the back, it's got
- 13:25a Connecticut number plate and I wouldn't say that he was, you know, driving the
- 13:32car like it was on a racetrack, but I had to work the Altima fairly hard
- 13:38to keep up this in a 25 mile an hour.
- 13:42Speed limit.
- 13:43And then he just pulled off out of the little like estate park
- 13:47onto like a main parkway and went off and, and did his business.
- 13:50And I was like, you know what?
- 13:52Maybe there is some room for it.
- 13:54But that was a super cool car in a kind of cool context and it's, mm.
- 14:02Um, did I, did you look at the link to that cheap MG ev?
- 14:11No.
- 14:12Um, it's a cheap.
- 14:14Mgv that's like a normal sized car.
- 14:19Um, as part of our like milestones in the evolution of the EV, this
- 14:25seemed like a significant development.
- 14:28This feels like this is like something which is not a million
- 14:32miles away from the Ami in price.
- 14:35But as functional as now, I do want to say with all of these cheap EVs and
- 14:42with old EVs, the residuals on them are terrible because the batteries lose
- 14:48performance so much and so quickly.
- 14:50So I do feel like in six or seven years, there's going to be a ton
- 14:55of electric cars, which look fine.
- 14:59But uh, worthless and need to be broken up because of the batteries that feel
- 15:04so grotesquely wasteful, but you know, it's just our consumer society, isn't it?
- 15:10Yeah, it's uh, it's uh, I can't pretend it looks good.
- 15:15I see.
- 15:15Now that I'm looking at the picture of it, I have seen one on the road, I think.
- 15:20I mean, I don't particularly like it, but yeah, it's I mean,
- 15:24whatever, but that's not the point.
- 15:26I think I just think that this.
- 15:30I, I, I mean, uh, I'm not saying I don't care what you think I'm saying that
- 15:34I, I, I, I do, um, but I'm just making the point that I feel like this is the,
- 15:41this is an important milestone that, you know, towards cheap, affordable.
- 15:48electric cars.
- 15:53So, uh, both of us watched Le Mans this year.
- 15:58I know it was ages ago, but we, it takes me ages to percolate these topics through.
- 16:03Don't, you know, I won't be judged for being slow and disorganized.
- 16:09That's who I am.
- 16:10Um, Le Mans, the TV experience, your thoughts.
- 16:16I'll throw a few out there.
- 16:18I feel like it's pretty enjoyable.
- 16:21I feel like you can access the race in, in a really interesting way that you couldn't
- 16:29do, you know, when I was going to Le Mans 20 years ago, you had to like, go there
- 16:34and deal with that like, intense carnival, gearhead, Mad Max kind of atmosphere.
- 16:41You don't have to, you don't have to deal with that.
- 16:44Um, if you know, I just subscribed to Eurosport for the month and
- 16:48then, you know, there you go.
- 16:49It's, uh, it's all there.
- 16:51I like the fact that I mean, I listened to a bit of F1 the other day and
- 16:54I don't want to ever go at anyone, especially somebody who can't catch up,
- 16:58but Martin Brundle is Martin Brundle.
- 17:00I've got no problem with Martin Brundle.
- 17:02David Croft just winds me the up.
- 17:04Like he won't shut up.
- 17:06Now, I know to be fair to him and to defend him because
- 17:08he can't defend himself.
- 17:09He is paid to talk about the race, but um, and even though
- 17:15the cars don't sound that great.
- 17:17Murray was saying, surely this new bloke is trying to like be what Murray was.
- 17:23Yeah, but I think they could all take a lesson from James Hunt who don't,
- 17:27didn't say all that much but had more, was more interesting when he did have
- 17:30something to say and shut up and let the, especially when he's on board, let me hear
- 17:34the car, you know, let me hear the car and let me like pay attention to that.
- 17:38There's, there's a quote, there's a, um, a clip I was watching a while back of.
- 17:43Uh, one of them, I think it's Anthony Davidson, when they're chatting in the
- 17:46group stuff in a qualifying session or a Friday session kind of thing at
- 17:51Spa, and he was all, well, let's listen to them go, go, go through a rouge.
- 17:54It gets about half a second into it and Crofty just talks over the whole thing.
- 17:58Um, I, like, it, it's, uh, I, I, I, I just, hmm, I don't know.
- 18:04It's not even as if he was saying anything particularly valid, but then
- 18:06again, I'm, I'm sort of maligning a guy for something I don't watch very
- 18:10religiously, so it's probably not fair.
- 18:13Uh, I've got to say, I, I, uh, I must have watched about five minutes of
- 18:21Formula One in the last five years.
- 18:24And I watched the beginning of the British Grand Prix and I watched Verstappen turn
- 18:31in on Hamilton at 160 miles an hour and watched him bin off into the scenery
- 18:37and then listen to them talk about whether or not that was Hamilton's fault.
- 18:46The, the, the level of, I mean, what, the biggest thing that turns me off
- 18:49about the sport is the level of, like, I just, I just can't get past that.
- 18:54So, so that means that, and I know that sort of Verstappen is what Senna
- 18:59was for my generation, but I'm the old guard now, and I can't respect the guy.
- 19:05I won't watch the sport because of him.
- 19:07I have less of an issue with him.
- 19:10I find him grumpy and a bit brusque, but then that's his right.
- 19:15Um, what I find irritating is the whole butthurt, thou shalt
- 19:19not criticize us of Red Bull.
- 19:21Um, I mean, that can just profoundly fuck off.
- 19:25Um, their whole attitude was encapsulated for me by Ted Kravitz,
- 19:29Ted Kravitz saying one in one of his sort of post rap wrap up sort of.
- 19:34When he wanders around, I think it was this, I might be misquoting the guy,
- 19:36but it was something along the lines of he was wandering around, he said like,
- 19:38you know, he referred to the incident at the end of the previous season or
- 19:41the season before last, whatever it was.
- 19:43And when, uh, and he said rather blithely when Lewis was robbed, um,
- 19:48which difficult to argue if you sit down and impassioned dispassionate about
- 19:52the facts, you know, the guy got fired for making the decision he made, um,
- 19:57altered the rules of the race in order to make it more exciting for the fans.
- 20:02Okay, I can see why you want to do that.
- 20:04It's a commercial sport, but that's not what the rules said.
- 20:06And therefore, it enabled Max Verstappen to win the race when perhaps
- 20:11he wouldn't have, almost certainly he wouldn't have done otherwise.
- 20:14And Red Bull then refused to speak to Ted Kravitz, wouldn't,
- 20:17and wouldn't give interviews to Sky for the following week or so.
- 20:21And we're like, it's, you know, we won't have that, no criticism, and it's
- 20:24like, we have to live in this mystical world where that didn't happen, and,
- 20:28you know, there's no, you can't malign that, and they were the same, if I
- 20:32recollect, when I was watching it more, when Vettel was their man, and there
- 20:37was no, there was no criticizing Vettel, there was no favoritism in the team,
- 20:41that you weren't allowed to call Weber the, you know, the number two driver,
- 20:45and it's like, well, look, You are the one that behaves like he's a number
- 20:48two driver and gives him second shrift.
- 20:50And when there's an incident between the two of them and it's clearly vet's
- 20:53fault, you don't defend Weber, you defend ve it's like, you know, it's
- 20:57the German guy with in that team.
- 20:59Okay, I understand why it's that way, but I, I refuse to play
- 21:03in this charade around that.
- 21:05We're not allowed to call that out.
- 21:07So, I mean, and look Mike, I was perfectly happy when Michael was
- 21:10winning all the timers Ferrari and now vet's winning all the timers Red Bull.
- 21:14And it's boring.
- 21:14And it was boring for Ferrari as well, so.
- 21:17Yeah, the sport in recent years has been, it feels like the era, it feels
- 21:25like the domination is more complete and lasts for longer in this century
- 21:31than it did in the last century.
- 21:33In the last century, the last 20 years of the last century, there was, you know,
- 21:39you didn't really know what was going to happen at the beginning of every season.
- 21:42Whereas now, you know, we're in like the Verstappen era, and he will set all these
- 21:46records, and then when his motivation, or Horner's motivation falters, then somebody
- 21:53else will get a look in kind of thing.
- 21:56Um, I think at some point, Ray Duane Neary retires, um, and that will
- 22:01balance things up again, probably.
- 22:05Yeah, I, I know too little about, um, about modern Formula 1, 2, 1.
- 22:10I mean, it's difficult to argue he's the most successful F1 designer of all time.
- 22:14It's just sort of almost impossible to argue anyone else.
- 22:17Um, if you look at his sort of career of success.
- 22:22Um, So on the subject of, uh, of things motorsport, Um, these, uh, these folk
- 22:29getting killed at, at Spa, Um, Youngins.
- 22:35Where you know, my understanding is it's it's you get it wrong already
- 22:40on the problem is that you bounce back onto the track and then then
- 22:45a hit by by by oncoming cars.
- 22:49Um, I want to say it's a naughty problem and I'm glad I'm not a
- 22:54steward of the circuit because, um.
- 22:58Obviously to do anything, you know, to be, to, to listen to these young
- 23:03pups, be like, change your circuit.
- 23:07This seems not remotely a good path of action.
- 23:13Um, you know, we can turn any sport into till Tilly wings if we want to,
- 23:18or we really gonna emasculate one of the only bits of, you know, epic bits
- 23:22of motor sport left kind of thing.
- 23:25Um, you know, obviously some people would advocate that we should do that.
- 23:29At the same time, um, you do feel like, you know, were I the stewards, I would not
- 23:39want people out on track in, in the wet because literally you're just waiting for.
- 23:49For something like that to happen.
- 23:50It's, it's clear that the cars are in a place now where they're going,
- 23:55uh, speed where, you know, the same accident has happened twice, right?
- 24:00That's I think what people are upset about quite rightly.
- 24:04Um, I don't know if you can do something about the runoff.
- 24:09I mean, that's the obvious thing when you visit Tamburello now.
- 24:13You look and you say, well, you could have done something about the runoff.
- 24:16You could have, could you not have thought about runoff?
- 24:19And it would have been difficult because of the river, but you
- 24:22could have, you know, there was at least a thought in that direction.
- 24:26With Radion, you feel like if we purists are so keen on preserving it,
- 24:31can't we do something about runoff?
- 24:33that means that you don't bounce back off?
- 24:36I mean, they have done.
- 24:37It is wider on the outside of Orouz, and on the left hand side of the hill
- 24:41there, there's a whole load of tarmac out there that there didn't used to be.
- 24:44Um, so there's more space.
- 24:48Um, but I mean, you know, the speeds there are so high.
- 24:54I mean, that, that, that's, that's the issue.
- 24:56Um, those little single seater cars don't have a lot of side protection, you know,
- 25:01if, if you get t boned, it's gonna, I mean, that said, I mean, if you look at
- 25:06the 24 hours of spa, GT, I mean, let me, um, give, uh, the boss the car keys here.
- 25:13Oh, they're right here.
- 25:13Yeah.
- 25:13Yeah.
- 25:15Sorry.
- 25:16No, that's no problem.
- 25:17Oh, where are you going?
- 25:18Sorry.
- 25:18I, I have an appointment.
- 25:19Oh, all right.
- 25:20Is the boy going with you?
- 25:22Yeah.
- 25:25Okay.
- 25:26Bring it on.
- 25:26What time are we going to the party?
- 25:28Or what?
- 25:28I have to double check.
- 25:30I think it starts, I think you have to leave it at like 11.
- 25:3315 or 11.
- 25:3430.
- 25:34Alright, 11.
- 25:3515 or 11.
- 25:3530, great.
- 25:40Um, you had had a thought which was completed there, so Oh, yeah, well the
- 25:47only other thing I was going to say was the um, that if you watch the, I watched
- 25:50the 24 Hours of GT racing there, um, you know, the 911s and all that sort of
- 25:58stuff, the stuff that, you know, the, the, the GTE stuff from, um, Le Mans series.
- 26:04Um, and this regularly accidents, you know, it's 24 hours.
- 26:07There's regularly accidents that have yellow flags here and there,
- 26:11you know, full course yellows and stuff, but I don't remember anyone
- 26:14actually getting really hurt, but then they're more substantial cars.
- 26:18Um, and I'm not suggesting that they didn't.
- 26:22I'm just saying I didn't see here any, but I mean, so, you know, there are,
- 26:24it's, but, you know, it's dangerous.
- 26:26The, the door here is always Jesus.
- 26:29That's bad.
- 26:31Um I I was thinking about this before I came in before we came into the call here
- 26:36and I realized that um do you remember that touring car driver Keith Odor um
- 26:43was was killed in a in a door hit and that's with a modern roll cage and a
- 26:47modern car that was that was in the 90s.
- 26:50Um if you think of it even there's a good chance Mike Hawthorne by a
- 27:04behind the front wheel at the bottom of the A pillar, right?
- 27:08You know, so that's, that's two completely different accidents,
- 27:12completely different time periods, but it, I, the door hits bad!
- 27:19The door hits bad!
- 27:20It always, it always will be, yeah, yeah, there's no, um, yeah, they, they,
- 27:26and they do their best, I mean, I know they do, to make these things as safe as
- 27:29they can, but, um, it's um, You know, I applaud them, you know, the, do I like
- 27:36the aesthetics of the hoop in Formula One?
- 27:38No.
- 27:39Is it a good idea?
- 27:40Yeah.
- 27:40I mean, I, the following season after they were introduced, a car went
- 27:44over the top of Alonso's bonnet.
- 27:46Um, and if it had been six inches further back, the tyre
- 27:49would have taken his head off.
- 27:51Um, and the, the barrier thing pushed the car up over the top,
- 27:54whether or not it saved his life.
- 27:55It has, I've seen other accidents reported where they were like.
- 27:59That driver would be dead if it wasn't for it.
- 28:01So I'd definitely want one if Roja was in the, in the race . If Roja was in the
- 28:06race, I would definitely want that thing.
- 28:09Yeah.
- 28:10Yeah.
- 28:11, yeah, that would probably be wise.
- 28:13Um, uh, the, uh, the NASCAR race in Chicago, it rained.
- 28:23Mm.
- 28:23Are you aware of what happened?
- 28:25Yeah, I watched the, I watched the highlights of it.
- 28:29Um.
- 28:31Did you know Shane Van Ginsburg before I'd heard the name?
- 28:35Yeah.
- 28:36Yeah.
- 28:36Cause I, I remembered him from VA supercars when I used to watch
- 28:41that years, years ago, and I've not watched that for a long time.
- 28:44So I, I, my first thought when he won was, oh, I bet it was a mixed up race because
- 28:52the, my, my thoughts about it was that if you're used to racing on ovals where it
- 28:59doesn't rain, Racing on a street circuit.
- 29:03You just you're completely out.
- 29:05So it's a NASCAR guys, both in the pits and out of it just would not have had the
- 29:12experience to cope with the situation, whereas you have a supercar guy who
- 29:19is used to acting, you know, it was.
- 29:23Yeah, it seemed it seemed less as if.
- 29:27It seemed like, although it was a NASCAR race, it suited the skills
- 29:31of the seasoned V8 supercar guy far more than the skills of a chaser.
- 29:36It was his debut race though, wasn't it?
- 29:39I, I don't know whether it was his debut.
- 29:41I think it was his first NASCAR race, to be fair to him.
- 29:44I mean, uh, well, uh, absolutely right.
- 29:47And you don't luck into that, do you?
- 29:49I've just, I've just, you know, the, the table was tipped in his favor,
- 29:53but, but he For sure, yeah, yeah.
- 29:54He took that race by the scruff of the neck and won it.
- 29:57And I know that without having watched it.
- 29:59I just know he must have done because Oh, he did.
- 30:02Yeah, I watched, I watched the sort of, I think Mark sent out the
- 30:04thing and I looked at it because I subscribed to NASCAR because like two
- 30:07days later there was the whole thing.
- 30:09You could just watch the whole race on YouTube.
- 30:11So I was like, Oh, well, therefore, if I want to watch NASCAR, have I just, I'm
- 30:15not bothered about watching it live and I'm happy to watch it a few days later.
- 30:18Then I can watch it on YouTube.
- 30:20So I watched the 15 minute highlights package of it.
- 30:22And it was a lot going on.
- 30:24Um, there was a lot of people locking up on the inside, smashing into the
- 30:28tire barriers and quite, and to be fair to them, quite a lot of people
- 30:31reversing back out of the tire barriers and carrying on about their day.
- 30:36So, you know, the tire barriers did a pretty good job, but yeah.
- 30:39Yeah, no, if you can like, if you can have a mistake and keep going,
- 30:43I think that adds to the drama of the sport, you know, everyone
- 30:47loves a comeback story, don't they?
- 30:50Mm.
- 30:51But no, it was, it was, it was, it was, it was good fun and a fair play to him.
- 30:54I mean, it's a, they were talking about him as a sort of tarmac specialist
- 30:58or a street circuit specialist and stuff, but, uh, run one, won one.
- 31:04I mean, it's pretty good, isn't it?
- 31:06That's, as records go, it's tough to touch.
- 31:43My next little section here is storytelling.
- 31:46I've called it loosely and it's, it's three or four different, um, you know,
- 31:52storytelling organs if if you like.
- 31:55Um, so I'm going to begin with, uh, as you know, I never watch movies.
- 32:01So, as ever, we're going to talk about things that we're not experts
- 32:04in, which is what we do all time.
- 32:07Um, I watched Fast Five, Fast and the Furious number five on a plane recently.
- 32:14I watched it with the sound down, listening to EDM.
- 32:17It was there.
- 32:18There were cars.
- 32:20I mean, I mean, wow.
- 32:25I mean, jumping Panteras off train, driving them.
- 32:30I've seen any of them.
- 32:31I've seen bits of them, if you like, but I've never sat and watched any of them.
- 32:35They must be coming to the mother if you don't get the Fast and Furious
- 32:3910 or whatever it is, so, you know.
- 32:41I, there's, I mean, the eye, the visuals of it is, uh, are, it's just awesome.
- 32:51It, it's, you know, Paul Walker and, uh, and driving through the streets of Rio.
- 32:57In this Harkoska skyline and you're like, not real, but somehow, but, but, you know,
- 33:04real in a light in a Dean's more gripe role play kind of, you know, in a, in a
- 33:12like ridiculous overstated role play kind of, uh, kind of kind of way, um, the,
- 33:23the whole, um, here's why I thought it was interesting.
- 33:29It's, it's a combination of like the most beautiful women.
- 33:34And the most amazing car shot in the most awesome way.
- 33:39Linked together in this very complicated, Utterly implausible
- 33:45comic book kind of, of, of storyline.
- 33:49Um, two Dodge Chargers dragging a giant safe through the streets of a city.
- 34:00And now a touch of beauty is added to our program.
- 34:03Hello boy.
- 34:24Is Mission Impossible out where you are?
- 34:27I've seen it.
- 34:29Dude, the bike stunt.
- 34:33I liked it because it wasn't complicated.
- 34:39It was just jaw dropping because you know he really did it.
- 34:45About five times.
- 34:47They didn't, they didn't gussy it up.
- 34:50He just rode the motorcycle off the cliff and did it.
- 34:54That was really a moment in cinema for me.
- 34:59The only problem I have with it is they overused it.
- 35:02Not in the film, But in all of the shit beforehand.
- 35:06So even the bit before the film, after they say the guy comes over the studio
- 35:11mic in the, uh, in the darkness to go, Hey, guys, like, hey, surprised you.
- 35:15Like everyone turned the phones off, you know, like little sort of make it
- 35:18a jokey matey thing so that you might actually fucking turn your phone off
- 35:21and not be a bad end and eat like crisps, like with your mouth open and
- 35:25stuff, all the stuff that people do.
- 35:27It's like, you know, can you keep it quiet?
- 35:28No one wants to hear you talking to your buddy.
- 35:30Um.
- 35:31All of that stuff.
- 35:31After that, there was another bit where they showed Tom Cruise doing
- 35:36that stunt before they started the movie in the final trailer for the
- 35:39movie I'm sitting down to watch.
- 35:42So it, I mean, it's difficult for it to lose impact given
- 35:46what an amazing thing it is.
- 35:47And the fact that as you say, he did do it and he had to do it four or five
- 35:50or six times or something ridiculous.
- 35:52Um, And, you know, I like the way that they did it, and then they
- 35:57just don't bother to show any of the bit where he gets on the train.
- 36:00They just have him swinging through the window.
- 36:02Um, at a fortunate time, um, and then some comedy timing elsewhere afterwards.
- 36:08So, um, yeah.
- 36:10I mean, it's, yeah, it's a stunning piece of work.
- 36:13Um, I, the movie itself, meh, it was okay.
- 36:16I quite enjoyed it.
- 36:18I thought he had too much paladin in him, for the roleplayers out there,
- 36:22for a chick he barely met, and who continuously tried to fuck him over.
- 36:26Like, I don't understand why he didn't just bond her a
- 36:29bit, if you know what I mean.
- 36:31I, I actually liked her as a character.
- 36:33I felt she was actually, had more character than anybody else in the movie.
- 36:38Agreed, yeah, yeah.
- 36:40But I lost patience when, upon leaving the police station, she
- 36:46got in a police car and drove away.
- 36:49Stole a police car right from in front of a police station when she
- 36:52could have just walked into the streets of Rome and disappeared.
- 36:57She makes some dumb decisions, yeah, and I mean, and his patience
- 37:00with her when he had no reason to feel beholden to her at all.
- 37:05It's like, you know, I'm beholden to you because you're hot, was the plot.
- 37:10Yeah.
- 37:10If she was a minger, no way.
- 37:12No one's buying that.
- 37:13So I'm beholden to you because you're hot and because I need you for the
- 37:17rest of the plot because another one of my old exes is going to snuff
- 37:21it in a way that is totally right.
- 37:23Yeah.
- 37:24You could, you could, you could, you could see it from the car park, how far
- 37:27away you could tell she was going to die.
- 37:29I mean, it was obvious, I mean, Jesus.
- 37:32So yeah, we need another chick cause I'm going to burn the last one.
- 37:36Obviously.
- 37:37So, you know, and you know, as well as I do, this is a two part movie.
- 37:40She's gonna be in exactly the same position with exactly the same guy,
- 37:44and this time he's gonna save her in the second part of the film.
- 37:48I mean, I might be wrong, but I don't think I am.
- 37:50I suspect that's how it's gonna go down.
- 37:53Now, you know, did I still enjoy it?
- 37:55Was I annoyed that I'd spent my money?
- 37:56No.
- 37:56I had a great time.
- 37:58It was an entertaining evening watching a big budget cheddar fest.
- 38:02Uh, and it's an interesting decision to make it a five and a half hour movie
- 38:07and split it across two films, rather than, you know, do what Hollywood
- 38:11usually would do, which is edit it down.
- 38:13What I'm interested to see is whether or not I think it was worth it, if you know
- 38:16what I mean, to have that much plot in.
- 38:18So far, I'm not convinced, um, but we'll see, you know.
- 38:25Yeah, I mean, I, the plot of modern movies is just so like, Pachow, pachow, pachow!
- 38:31I just, you know, it's, I, I, I just try and grasp on to the front end.
- 38:36Dude, you wanna watch John Wick 4, yeah?
- 38:38And if you haven't seen John Wick 1, like, don't worry.
- 38:41Um, but, if you've seen one of them, it would help.
- 38:44Yeah, the first one, or the second one.
- 38:47I thought three was a bit shit, to be honest.
- 38:48I thought they overdid it.
- 38:49But what they've really done with four is just ignore all of that
- 38:52and recognize that what they're doing is live actioning a comic.
- 38:57That's what they're doing.
- 38:58So therefore it's Every shot is like a graphic novel.
- 39:03Every shot could be, if you think about it, every shot could be the
- 39:05album cover or could be the shot on the front of the graphic novel, though.
- 39:08You were like, oh, doesn't that look amazing?
- 39:10You know, you know, there's like, there's a dawn scene on Sac Kerr,
- 39:14but there's no one else sight.
- 39:16They're standing there at dawn as the, and they have like a dual on, on, on.
- 39:22I mean, it's like, you what?
- 39:24So, um, they, he gets thrown down the steps and he's climbing up the steps.
- 39:28It's like a Tom and Jerry cartoon almost.
- 39:30He gets thrown down these steps so many times and fights his way back
- 39:33up the steps, but like, god damn.
- 39:35Um, some of the set pieces are fabulous and it's beautifully
- 39:40lit and beautifully shot.
- 39:41Um, and when you remember, it's not a film, it's a, it's
- 39:44a graphic novel essentially.
- 39:45It's, it's awesome.
- 39:47Um, but again, three hours, 15, like, you know, my, uh, I actually didn't feel
- 39:54like Mission Impossible drag too much.
- 39:57Usually with three hour films, I feel like they drag like mission.
- 40:01Maybe that's because I just went and took a leak rather than
- 40:04waiting for the movie to end.
- 40:06I was like, I think I'll be able to pick up what's happening here.
- 40:09So I went and took a leak.
- 40:10Um, uh, Moving to another kind of storytelling.
- 40:16Have you been watching the new 3D Bot Maker?
- 40:20I've seen the King of the Mountain one.
- 40:24Yeah, what do you make of the new track?
- 40:27Um, it's alright.
- 40:30It's growing on me.
- 40:31I mean, the number of fatalities seems to have gone up.
- 40:34Oli thinks it should be longer.
- 40:37But they're all that, the last one wasn't that long either.
- 40:40It was, they're all about that sort of 13 to 17 seconds kind of, um.
- 40:46I suspect it's more difficult to set up camera, and you would have
- 40:49thought they could maybe do it.
- 40:50Maybe they've only got big enough space to set up a certain amount of track,
- 40:53and you've got to set up a lot of GoPros and all that sort of stuff, haven't you?
- 40:56So, um, and, I mean, clearly they run the races and then plan their
- 41:03commentary and do their commentary after the races and stuff, as you would.
- 41:07Um, and that makes it pretty good, and I've thoroughly enjoyed it.
- 41:12Um, yeah, I mean, I don't think the track's the greatest thing.
- 41:17Um, but it is still interesting to see, you know, which cars random their
- 41:21way in from the back, um, and are able to sort of make points on the rounds
- 41:26where they're on the second row.
- 41:29That is what you're looking for is, is if they can make points on, on the,
- 41:34the, the, the other thing I, the thing that I find quite frustrating is if
- 41:39there's a car that's noticeably faster than the others, and he can't like that
- 41:43car can't like exert his advantage.
- 41:46Um, I always feel, uh, uh, frustrated by that.
- 41:49I was going to say, I also feel on this particular course, you talk about
- 41:52the number of fatalities being high.
- 41:54I, I agree with you.
- 41:56It's not least because the crowd are allowed to stand too close at
- 41:59the finish line, um, which may have been a deliberate design feature.
- 42:04Um, but the, the other thing that I think is interesting is the bridge and the
- 42:09way that a number of cars coming out of that bridge do what I call like the 18.
- 42:16Do you remember in the 18 cars would always crash the same way in that one
- 42:20side of the car would drive up like a park car or a ramp or a bush that concealed
- 42:26a ramp and and and then so rather than and that would induce because one of
- 42:31the side of the car went up and the other side didn't and the front lifted
- 42:36up that would be enough to heave it up to fall spectacularly onto its roof.
- 42:42Um, yeah, yeah, no, it's, um.
- 42:47Yeah, the one that went into the drink in the semi finals that went, just
- 42:50disappeared off the edge into the water.
- 42:52That was quite an impressive crash.
- 42:54Um, there seems to be quite a lot of people doing the, uh, uh, crazy Jimmy
- 42:59finish the race in reverse, um, as well.
- 43:03There seems to be a number of people, uh, managing that particular maneuver.
- 43:06Um, but yeah, again, the fastest bloke, uh, I think it was a chap, um,
- 43:11nominally a chap in the, in the, uh, Uh, car made it through his is going to
- 43:16feature in the um, the end of season, whatever the best of the best champions
- 43:22thing is based upon his time alone.
- 43:24So they have kept whoever it was, Scotty or whoever it was that had
- 43:28the fastest track time so far.
- 43:29It's that gold DeLorean, that DeLorean, that DeLorean
- 43:35casting seems extremely fast.
- 43:38A lot of people have been using the Sierra Cosworth casting, um,
- 43:43which obviously I absolutely love.
- 43:45It's like watching 80s motorsport with the number of Sierra
- 43:48Cosworths there, um, in it.
- 43:51Not a big fan of the Nissan Maxima wagon.
- 43:53There were three in the final, so it was a bit, uh Yeah, well, I think
- 43:57they're good because they're low and you can put a lot of weight in them.
- 44:02Yeah, potentially.
- 44:04I don't know why the Sierra's good.
- 44:08Um, so, uh, I was taking this magazine Practical sports bikes.
- 44:16Basically, it was for the kind of 90s, hippie kind of bikes that I love and ride.
- 44:22And it was right up my alley.
- 44:25Like every time they did like a comparison feature, I'd have one of the bikes that
- 44:29they were like doing the comparison between it really was, uh, their
- 44:33defunct is the end of, um, practical sports bikes, whilst performance bikes
- 44:39back in the day, there was like a gap.
- 44:41It was the same.
- 44:43Contributors, but just like years later talking about the same bikes, but years
- 44:47later, but that magazine is is now defunct and and that's sad and it brings me on
- 44:54to, um, the demise of print media in the automotive space and how I think we're
- 45:02sort of losing something because I.
- 45:07consume print media in a different way from the way that I consume,
- 45:11you know, I, when I'm reading a magazine, I'm not looking at my
- 45:14phone when I'm looking at my phone, I tend not to read automotive content.
- 45:18They're like big articles.
- 45:20When I open a magazine, I'm ready to read a, a long article.
- 45:25So I'm saying that I'm missing the magazine because
- 45:28of the form that it takes.
- 45:29I'm not saying I'm going to struggle.
- 45:31For content or need to subscribe to another magazine or anything.
- 45:34I'm surrounded by reading material.
- 45:36I'm still looking at my phone and screens all the time.
- 45:38Anyway, um, so I, I'm fine with the narrowing almost, but I'm
- 45:45sad that this particular medium is not able to be sustainable.
- 45:53Yeah, I know.
- 45:53It's a shame.
- 45:54Um, but, um, I think it's a way, the other thing you can do to sort of ape it
- 45:58a little bit is get yourself a tablet.
- 46:00Because it does feel a little bit more like you've got a sort of
- 46:02larger page, more sort of format, if you know what I mean, and you
- 46:05could hold it in the same way.
- 46:07And although it's not page turning, it does feel a little bit more,
- 46:10phones, uh, long articles on the phone, you know, you're constantly
- 46:14scrolling, even if you have the font pretty small, you're constantly
- 46:16scrolling, whereas on a tablet it does feel more like, you know, um, yeah.
- 46:23We bought a Samsung tablet years ago, and one of the things I would say
- 46:26about the Samsung tablets is don't, Be cheap by the expensive one because
- 46:30the screens are like, wow, cool.
- 46:33And then you're like, it never sort of feels crap.
- 46:34It always feels like, oh, it's premium every time you're
- 46:36on it and it feels slick.
- 46:38Um, and that it has a sort of pass aroundness that a magazine also has
- 46:43in the same way in a way that your phone quite doesn't because it's your
- 46:45phone, you know, you can pass it to it.
- 46:47Whereas you can pass that around.
- 46:48It's a shared way of, oh, quick, have a look at this kind of thing.
- 46:51So it does have a sort of value add.
- 46:54Um, but no, I agree with you the, um, you know, I've got apart from like
- 46:59about seven or eight I think I've got a complete run of evos in the other room.
- 47:04Um gathering dust mainly Um, I like the fact that i've got them Um, and at some
- 47:10point I would be very surprised if they don't go digital only in the same way.
- 47:13So Um quick fire us road trip money no object What do you drive?
- 47:31Well, I would probably end up on that road in Idaho that I love that goes
- 47:34out up towards Is it Idaho City up into the mountains like god damn?
- 47:38What a road It's about the 40 miles of like beautiful left right left right sort
- 47:43of up and down wrapped round mountains through the trees I'm a I meant what car?
- 47:52Yeah, yeah, no, I know.
- 47:53I was just thinking what would I drive on that road.
- 47:55Well, given it's super smooth, um, I don't know.
- 47:59I was watching a guy in a Lola T70 go around Spa on board today.
- 48:04And you can buy that broadly, T70, it's like road legal.
- 48:08Um, I quite like one of those at the moment.
- 48:13Um, not much fun as a long road trip vehicle, I suspect.
- 48:18Uh, but fun, I mean, in other ways.
- 48:22This F 250.
- 48:23I have for the road trip.
- 48:25I can't believe I've not talked about it before.
- 48:27It was awesome.
- 48:30Um, you know, strong up to more than three way speeds.
- 48:37If you stomp the gas enough, it was a VA petrol, not, not a diesel.
- 48:43Um, we, uh, there was, uh, there's some roads in, in Nevada that,
- 48:50um, They're gravel, they're, they're, they're marked roads, but
- 48:56they're gravel, they're not paved.
- 48:58So on those roads, you could have it in high four at like 70 miles an hour
- 49:04across this, this gravel, which I, I've got to say, I'm not a four wheel
- 49:09drive person, but high four is the most awesome, one of the most awesome
- 49:17things in motoring, I love high four.
- 49:20So Ollie was like, what's the difference in your high four,
- 49:22like do it in two wheel drive?
- 49:24Um, So I've, I'm at the side of the road and I've had it in high four, like off the
- 49:29side of the road on the gravel bit of the side of the road, this is like middle of
- 49:32nowhere in Nevada, um, and then, uh, uh, I put it in two wheel drive, stop, put it in
- 49:41two wheel drive, I wasn't messing around trying to change it when I was driving
- 49:43along, not sure if I could, but I wasn't doing that, then I stopped, put it back
- 49:48in two wheel drive, turned the traction control off and, and launched it, right?
- 49:53And I kid you not, it, I pushed the tail out and the nose up onto the road
- 49:59and then there was probably a 20 second period where I had the nose of the
- 50:05pickup truck on the road and the back of it on this gravel slope off the side
- 50:12of the road and we were looking out of the side window and it was sliding in
- 50:18this, it was without question one of the most beautiful slides I've ever done.
- 50:25And I will forever love that F 250 pickup, and I now feel like I might
- 50:30need a four wheel drive pickup truck, not a two wheel drive one, just because
- 50:35I love the high four, like, waaaaaah!
- 50:38I think if you can have a pickup, it makes sense to have a four wheel drive
- 50:40one, because it gives you the off roadness that that image promises you.
- 50:48Um, what's the best music to drive to?
- 50:55I mean, it depends.
- 50:57What sort of driving are you trying to accomplish?
- 50:59If you're going through the night on caffeine and holy gasoline,
- 51:03then Boston trance music, um, you will inevitably end up speeding.
- 51:11Um, if you want to just chill through Western America, like whatever the
- 51:16country music play station is playing, um, If you're rolling through Europe, I
- 51:22don't mind doing Europop, or otherwise I'll play whatever's on my iPod, um, or
- 51:27whatever, uh, YouTube music or whatever.
- 51:29Um, it sort of depends, I'll try and do like, if I'm road tripping, I'll try and
- 51:32do a bit of local flavor, just to make sure that you, in the same way as, you
- 51:37know, it's nice to have the windows down, it's nice to smell the countryside as
- 51:39you're passing through, part of the value of doing the road trip is seeing all the
- 51:42shit in between that you just fly over.
- 51:45Um, so in the same way as like stopping at a diner to have some
- 51:48food, not going in the McDonald's.
- 51:50Cause the McDonald's are saying shit everywhere, fuck that.
- 51:52Um, you know, it's nice to get a bit of local patina on you as well, you know?
- 51:57So eat at the place where Angie's like, Do we have to I feel a bit
- 52:00uncomfortable eating here in Montana.
- 52:03Cause like, most of the stuff on the wall has got eyes and
- 52:05horns and is looking at me.
- 52:07Um, you know, ? Yeah.
- 52:09Yeah.
- 52:09I ate one of those places in Fontana as well.
- 52:12Yeah.
- 52:12I mean, and look, you know, you just gotta roll with the punches.
- 52:15On the other end, the pork steak that she had roll was like the big, the
- 52:20size of the plate, and it was a big fucking plate, you know, I mean, it
- 52:23was, so, the feed you got was huge.
- 52:26Um, and lovely and the waitress was super nice and it was, it
- 52:29was a lovely place, but it's just different strokes, but you don't get
- 52:32that feeling if you roll through.
- 52:33So yeah.
- 52:34Come back to the question.
- 52:35Um, yeah, I, I, I tend to do digital or, um, local.
- 52:43Yeah.
- 52:43The fast, the fast digital for highway stuff, but for sure stuck in
- 52:50traffic, I need spoken word travel.
- 52:54I, I too believe I love the local.
- 52:57And, and you're right, you're a pop, you're a pop of Europe, um, and, and,
- 53:04uh, uh, in America country, and, and we've done, um, a lot of country on, on,
- 53:12uh, on my road trip with the boy there.
- 53:14We did, uh, plenty of And the cheesy Rocky stuff is the best stuff, isn't it?
- 53:17Like, it's the most amusing.
- 53:19The, you know.
- 53:20I want a boat and millions and like, blah, blah, blah, you know, that's,
- 53:23that's the entertainment stuff.
- 53:25The, I had to shoot the dog and the missus left me and woe is
- 53:28me, like, fuck off, no one cares.
- 53:30Like, I know people, they sell really well, but I'm not interested.
- 53:33It, like, needs to have a little bit of, sort of, tongue in cheek, laugh at
- 53:36itself ness for me, otherwise it doesn't quite work, but then I'm not American.
- 53:40Yeah, yeah, that's that's that's interesting.
- 53:44Yeah, it can't take itself too too seriously.
- 53:46Certainly, uh, the atmosphere on on our road trip was that we were not
- 53:52taking, um, the music very seriously.
- 53:54We were singing along and and laughing and generally really in in in the best way.
- 54:01Yeah.
- 54:02Um, yeah, because otherwise you start getting into going to the grand
- 54:05old Opry and you know, um, I mean, I'm not really that into country.
- 54:11I quite like to listen to it.
- 54:12The relaxed stuff, you know, the amusing, the rocky stuff.
- 54:15But like, you know, when it all gets a bit serious, it's nice to
- 54:18be able to change the channel.
- 54:20Um, Metallica.
- 54:22Short hair or long hair?
- 54:27Um, I don't really care.
- 54:29Like, do whatever they want, you know?
- 54:31No, no, just era.
- 54:32Oh, I see.
- 54:33New, old, old.
- 54:34Metallica, yeah.
- 54:35Long hair.
- 54:36Yeah.
- 54:38Yeah, I thought you'd say that.
- 54:40But those more recent albums are just so, those 90s albums, so listenable.
- 54:47I find I listen to that material more now.
- 54:50than the long hair stuff of years ago.
- 54:53Yeah, I mean, it's each their own.
- 54:54And the stuff off the most recent album, I listened to a couple of tracks.
- 54:57I quite liked it.
- 54:58I thought it was pretty decent.
- 54:59I mean, it felt like they were going back to early Metallica, sort of
- 55:02more than the sort of, um, period that I basically tuned out of them.
- 55:08Um, so yeah.
- 55:10Mark, thank you for your time.
- 55:12My pleasure, man.
