- 1:02Speaker 3: Lambert after practice today with some updates especially on coppocnco
- 1:07Speaker 3: Could he be nearing a return? Before we get to
- 1:10Speaker 3: Lane Lambert's let's replay things right back for you. We
- 1:13Speaker 3: had some highlights here from this past week. Berkeley Catton
- 1:16Speaker 3: getting his first point in an NHL jersey, the Cracking
- 1:20Speaker 3: getting through a couple of tough losses against Philadelphia and
- 1:23Speaker 3: Washington to bounce back and roar their way to victories
- 1:27Speaker 3: over Winnipeg and Edmonton. Now they did it. Among the highlights,
- 1:31Speaker 3: here's what you may have missed here in our calls
- 1:34Speaker 3: from this past week. Vineers takes it back and our
- 1:36Speaker 3: rims around of the right wards for Catton, ont of
- 1:38Speaker 3: the line for Flurry here.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Shot through traffic, face gold.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Jordan every set a screen front of damn with r
- 1:47Speaker 3: but twelve forty four to go in period one. It
- 1:50Speaker 3: came off the point shot from Kale Flurry and set
- 1:53Speaker 3: up by Berkeley Canton and the cracket bun to well
- 1:56Speaker 3: one nothing.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Wait, yeah, great work by Cotton picking up puck off
- 1:59Speaker 4: the wall. They're getting back to Kale Flurry at the point.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Who got a shot on net. It was about hip
- 2:03Speaker 4: Hi Everley gets a piece of it one nuffing Kracking
- 2:07Speaker 4: and Berkeley Catton has his first point in the.
- 2:10Speaker 5: Eight shorts back to the line fresh off the bench
- 2:13Speaker 5: and a shot from Myers turned aside rebound scaress.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Jana Schwartz from the near circle.
- 2:23Speaker 5: Beats Logan Thompson and the Cracking get their first goal
- 2:27Speaker 5: in the game, three to one, sixteen to ten to
- 2:30Speaker 5: play here at this third what it.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Was jakeens Schwartz from behind the Capitol's net that dug
- 2:36Speaker 4: that puck out and recognized that the Cracking were on
- 2:38Speaker 4: a change. It was Ben Myers coming from the bench
- 2:41Speaker 4: that was coming back to the offensive zone.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Schwartz put it back up to the blue line.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Ben picked it up, got a big shot which fort
- 2:47Speaker 4: Logan Thompson to give up a big rebound that rebound
- 2:50Speaker 4: went right to Schwartz. This game's three to one out.
- 2:53Speaker 5: Like wis to Jonathan Taine a shot left side that
- 2:56Speaker 5: one turned away the rebound Anita Ryder and that forced
- 2:59Speaker 5: away as well by Joey to Kohor. Back to back
- 3:01Speaker 5: big saves for Joey d to keep this a scrorellless
- 3:05Speaker 5: games back up Tom Held hit My Larsen right side
- 3:07Speaker 5: back to Shane right for a shot Tipton goal. Rebound
- 3:10Speaker 5: scares Jaden Schwartz, crashing the goal and the Seattle Kracken
- 3:16Speaker 5: bury the loose change. It's a one nothing Cracking lead,
- 3:19Speaker 5: seventeen thirty two left in the second variant.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Well, the Kracking doing a fantastic job with the change.
- 3:25Speaker 4: Once the puck cut in the offensive end, they were
- 3:26Speaker 4: able to get their defenseman off the ice. It was
- 3:29Speaker 4: Adam Larson, who came from the bench that got the
- 3:31Speaker 4: puck back on the point, got a shot off. Jonny
- 3:34Speaker 4: Newan found the rebound, got it over to you to
- 3:36Speaker 4: Janie Schwartz.
- 3:37Speaker 1: He puts it in the back of the net. One
- 3:39Speaker 1: nothing Cracker.
- 3:40Speaker 5: The Catton, in his home debut, sends it up to
- 3:42Speaker 5: the ears left side.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Two on one every fires.
- 3:52Speaker 6: Jordan Everley finishing off two on one with Mattymaniers and
- 3:57Speaker 6: the Seattle Kracken take a one nothing lead eighteen thirty
- 4:01Speaker 6: seven to go on the.
- 4:02Speaker 4: First well, after Vince Dunn sets a toad with a
- 4:06Speaker 4: shove to throw excuse me to McDavid.
- 4:10Speaker 1: The Crack goal the other way, it's Maddy Butteer's down
- 4:12Speaker 1: the left side.
- 4:13Speaker 4: He makes a great cross. I feed top of the circles.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Jordan Everley. Jordan Everley wasted no time beating Skinner one
- 4:20Speaker 4: up in cracking.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Bouncing buck back to the line.
- 4:22Speaker 5: Let's yeah, I couldn't hold it in and the Oilers
- 4:25Speaker 5: break it ahead.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Here's Frederick looking in.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Front on goal.
- 4:29Speaker 1: What a same?
- 4:30Speaker 5: Why joined a card?
- 4:34Speaker 4: Noah? Philp angled his skate on that he get his
- 4:36Speaker 4: stick was tied up.
- 4:37Speaker 1: He angled his skate, which you can do to try.
- 4:40Speaker 4: And redirect that bucket into the back of the head.
- 4:42Speaker 4: But Joey, the cord came up big on it comes.
- 4:44Speaker 5: Ryan winter tam he'll find a step on. Henry top
- 4:47Speaker 5: to carchiay, stop tie carsiay what a shift?
- 5:00Speaker 1: If a miss?
- 5:00Speaker 7: Four fine block shots and a goal.
- 5:03Speaker 1: On the other end, it's a tune out thing. Seeattle
- 5:07Speaker 1: lead But you're right.
- 5:08Speaker 4: After blocking two shots in the defensive end of the ice,
- 5:11Speaker 4: Ryan Winterdon picks the puck up, goes down that right side,
- 5:14Speaker 4: turns the jets on, pulls all of the defenders to him,
- 5:18Speaker 4: waits to the last second feet at the ty cart Jade.
- 5:20Speaker 4: He beat Skinner. Tune up the cracking shark couldn't keep
- 5:23Speaker 4: it off side, but here's ahead.
- 5:25Speaker 7: Every walks into Oh, captain, by captain, that's two the
- 5:39Speaker 7: seattle cracking back up by too.
- 5:42Speaker 1: It's a free one cracking lead.
- 5:45Speaker 4: We'll crack and put diesel pressure on the oiler defenseman
- 5:47Speaker 4: right in the blue line. They cough it up, not anybody.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Heers finds it right at center. Rice sweeps enough to
- 5:52Speaker 4: every every goes blocker side top shelf, free one cracking.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Today's taking here.
- 6:00Speaker 5: To get back to game action finement.
- 6:02Speaker 8: Yeah, he's progressing, obviously, and he was in some drills today,
- 6:06Speaker 8: so that was nice to see, you know, and we'll
- 6:09Speaker 8: just see where we go from here. He's still day
- 6:11Speaker 8: to day, but certainly as it has been for the
- 6:14Speaker 8: last little bit, encouraging that he's on the ice and
- 6:18Speaker 8: back in practice. For sure.
- 6:20Speaker 3: You've been through kind of the gauntlet of six games,
- 6:22Speaker 3: ten days on the road back home. Now, I mean,
- 6:24Speaker 3: what benefit is there now to have a bit of
- 6:26Speaker 3: a lighter's schedule this week to do what you want
- 6:29Speaker 3: to do in practice?
- 6:29Speaker 8: Now, Well, we haven't had a lot of practice time
- 6:31Speaker 8: because we have been on the road and we have played,
- 6:33Speaker 8: you know, pretty much every second day, you know, with
- 6:36Speaker 8: the back to back in there, but you know, you
- 6:39Speaker 8: get a little bit more opportunity to work on a
- 6:42Speaker 8: couple of things that you need to work on, So
- 6:45Speaker 8: that's the benefit of it, you know, And then a
- 6:49Speaker 8: little bit of rest.
- 6:50Speaker 5: You know.
- 6:50Speaker 8: The interesting thing with that is is there's a balance
- 6:53Speaker 8: between rest and rhythm. And when you get playing every
- 6:56Speaker 8: second night, you get into a bit of a rhythm.
- 6:58Speaker 8: So you have to understand that there's a a rest component,
- 7:02Speaker 8: but you have to keep your rhythm.
- 7:04Speaker 5: How do you keep that rhythm up? Then during the.
- 7:06Speaker 8: Practice practice, Yeah, you got to have intensity in practice
- 7:10Speaker 8: and some pace and things like that. So, uh, you know,
- 7:12Speaker 8: do some things five on five in practice like we
- 7:14Speaker 8: were doing today.
- 7:16Speaker 5: You just faced Montreal pretty recently. Again, what did you.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Learn from that game, both with your team and the
- 7:24Speaker 3: other team, what you can kind of do differently?
- 7:26Speaker 8: Well, yeah, I mean there's a few things potentially that
- 7:29Speaker 8: we can make, you know, make little adjustments to. I
- 7:32Speaker 8: thought the game itself, for the most part, was was
- 7:36Speaker 8: a good hockey game. I thought it was well played
- 7:38Speaker 8: by both teams. They're a fast team and you know,
- 7:41Speaker 8: they they're in first place obviously in their division. You know,
- 7:47Speaker 8: they're I think six there's something in goals for per game,
- 7:50Speaker 8: so they're scoring goals. They've got a lot of skill
- 7:53Speaker 8: and a lot of speed.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Uh.
- 7:55Speaker 1: You know.
- 7:55Speaker 8: Obviously they've got some dynamic defenseman as well. So they're
- 8:00Speaker 8: they're a very very challenging hockey team for anybody, and
- 8:03Speaker 8: they're proving that right now being in first place.
- 8:06Speaker 5: When you talked a little bit about Vince in those
- 8:08Speaker 5: game last game, what are the elements of his play
- 8:11Speaker 5: that you find so valuable to this group.
- 8:14Speaker 8: Well, he's got a he's got a super super smart
- 8:17Speaker 8: with the puck. Uh, he can make plays. He has
- 8:20Speaker 8: the ability to escape, you know, four checks on his
- 8:23Speaker 8: own to a certain degree and then and then make
- 8:27Speaker 8: a play.
- 8:28Speaker 4: You know.
- 8:28Speaker 8: So he's a good puck mover, and he's a he
- 8:33Speaker 8: can be a physical element, a physical presence.
- 8:36Speaker 4: You know.
- 8:36Speaker 8: When I started watching a lot of them in the summer,
- 8:40Speaker 8: I was very impressed with with that side of his game.
- 8:42Speaker 8: I think he's played very well for us.
- 8:45Speaker 5: Is Jared mccannon progressing in all or is he kind
- 8:47Speaker 5: of just element.
- 8:48Speaker 8: He's right now He's in a little bit of a
- 8:50Speaker 8: holding pattern, So we'll see where we go with him.
- 8:54Speaker 8: You know there should be we should know more here
- 8:56Speaker 8: day to day as we go forward.
- 8:58Speaker 3: All right, Coppo Coco could be close. We'll wait and see,
- 9:01Speaker 3: Jared mccannon right now. Still maybe a work in progress,
- 9:03Speaker 3: as Lane Lambert said in a holding pattern right now.
- 9:06Speaker 3: That's Lane Lambert after practice Monday, plus your highlights from
- 9:10Speaker 3: what was a busy week, the crack and losing back
- 9:12Speaker 3: to back of Philadelphia and Washington and what a way
- 9:15Speaker 3: to bounce back at Winnipeg and Edmonton. So here we are,
- 9:20Speaker 3: game two of the fine game homestand upon us tomorrow
- 9:23Speaker 3: night income the Montreal Canadians and then series is over.
- 9:29Speaker 3: We haven't even hit Halloween yet, and this is going
- 9:30Speaker 3: to be a series all done, Mike Benton, ever it
- 9:33Speaker 3: fits you, al Kiniski. Our whole round table back together
- 9:36Speaker 3: again now for Crack and Weinkly Pillaus. It was my
- 9:40Speaker 3: first round up with all of you. And what I
- 9:43Speaker 3: want to first ask before we get into the hockey
- 9:45Speaker 3: component here of this is what do we learn from
- 9:48Speaker 3: our favorites on the road. I think for me, when
- 9:51Speaker 3: it comes to eating in Philadelphia, one lunch, one she
- 9:55Speaker 3: steak might mean two meals.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Yeah, man, we listen I'm gonna I'm gonna tell you, Mike,
- 10:04Speaker 5: like it is. It is such a joy to have
- 10:08Speaker 5: you on the road hanging out with us, you know,
- 10:13Speaker 5: and I mean it you worn't so hard, and like
- 10:14Speaker 5: obviously we each have our own jobs and we you know,
- 10:18Speaker 5: we we know what we signed up for. But for
- 10:21Speaker 5: you to be able to get these you know, drop ins,
- 10:25Speaker 5: these parachute moments on the road, Like, I know it
- 10:28Speaker 5: means a lot for you, but it means a lot
- 10:30Speaker 5: to me to be able to have you on the
- 10:32Speaker 5: road and you know, welcome you in our world for
- 10:35Speaker 5: a little bit. But I mean as far as as
- 10:37Speaker 5: far as on the road, if it's if it's a
- 10:40Speaker 5: nice honk of meat and a nice glass of red
- 10:43Speaker 5: wine or a nice bourbon or old fashion and my
- 10:45Speaker 5: partner Al, that's all I need. I'm happy.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm kind of the same way Mike checked all
- 10:52Speaker 4: the things that ever just said. But I think also,
- 10:55Speaker 4: you know, sometimes on the road it's about convenience too.
- 10:58Speaker 4: You're you're figuring out how much time you have, you know,
- 11:01Speaker 4: between a morning skate and a bus and how much
- 11:04Speaker 4: time you need for work, and sometimes it's convenient to
- 11:06Speaker 4: you at the hotel, and some of the hotels have
- 11:08Speaker 4: better food than others. But you know, I'm always down
- 11:12Speaker 4: with finding a place with a delicious steak and a
- 11:15Speaker 4: bourbon a glass of wine.
- 11:16Speaker 3: When we got the time, what's the most important thing
- 11:18Speaker 3: for breakfast? Are you guys just more on the train
- 11:21Speaker 3: of hey, load up right now? Are you gonna go
- 11:23Speaker 3: as light as you can for breakfast?
- 11:25Speaker 5: I'm the worst for breakfast, man, Listen, give me a
- 11:29Speaker 5: give me a Starbucks sandwich and a cup of coffee
- 11:31Speaker 5: and a banana that'll hold me over.
- 11:33Speaker 3: I thought it was you who ordered the fruit loops
- 11:35Speaker 3: over at the five star restaurant.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Though, honestly man like, So I look at a guy
- 11:41Speaker 5: like John Foreslyn and jt Right, they're up at the
- 11:43Speaker 5: crack of dawn working out getting a breakfast, hearty, hearty
- 11:48Speaker 5: meal to start the day. Nah, brother, we have a
- 11:51Speaker 5: ten fifteen bus text NOL nine to forty five lobby.
- 11:55Speaker 4: You want a coffee? Great?
- 11:56Speaker 5: And I get a sandwich and a banana that I
- 11:58Speaker 5: picked up from the night before. And yeah, I'll see
- 12:01Speaker 5: you at lunch at noon. I'm good.
- 12:05Speaker 4: I've got the Angel and the devil on my shoulders.
- 12:07Speaker 4: The devil is like, you know what, there's a delicious
- 12:11Speaker 4: buffet breakfast downstairs and at you know, eight am or
- 12:14Speaker 4: eggs benedict here are really good. And then there's the
- 12:18Speaker 4: angel going, you're not even hungry. You ate stayed for
- 12:21Speaker 4: dinner last night. Why don't you fast until noon or one?
- 12:25Speaker 4: You big loser?
- 12:26Speaker 5: Listen, it's the NHL. The NHL does not stand for
- 12:31Speaker 5: National Hockey League. It stands for never hungry league exactly.
- 12:36Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 12:37Speaker 4: Yeah, So I fight the battle because I love breakfast,
- 12:42Speaker 4: but I also need to space out the eating because
- 12:46Speaker 4: as ever it says there's never a shortage of food.
- 12:49Speaker 3: I think I had the avocado toast last trip for breakfast.
- 12:52Speaker 3: So me being born in nineteen eighty one, there was
- 12:54Speaker 3: a millennial joke in there somewhere that when it comes
- 12:58Speaker 3: to house leasing as well. But hey, let's just sive
- 13:00Speaker 3: into it here. First off, guys, it was a pleasure
- 13:03Speaker 3: and an honor to be with you on the road
- 13:05Speaker 3: and I can't wait here for the next round up.
- 13:06Speaker 3: And I think that you're pining here to buy the
- 13:08Speaker 3: next round of beverages here, and I'll certainly be happy
- 13:10Speaker 3: here to do that as well. What we learned from
- 13:15Speaker 3: last week after a loss of Philadelphia. To me, it
- 13:19Speaker 3: was about I think they were due for a clunker
- 13:23Speaker 3: one of these days. Loss at Washington unfortunately do for
- 13:27Speaker 3: a clunker as well, and then you bounce back against
- 13:31Speaker 3: Winnipeg in the fashion that they do it. And then
- 13:34Speaker 3: you come in first game into the home stand, no
- 13:38Speaker 3: dipping your toe into the water. You had to hang
- 13:41Speaker 3: on a bit, but you found a way to win.
- 13:44Speaker 3: How many times have we said in the last year
- 13:48Speaker 3: two years, the Kraken found a way to win.
- 13:52Speaker 4: Yeah, I was gonna say, I think we've talked a
- 13:56Speaker 4: lot about, at least in the last season, about the
- 13:59Speaker 4: closing games out in the crack and just not having
- 14:01Speaker 4: the ability to do it so many times. And you know,
- 14:03Speaker 4: they scored a lot of goals in the third period
- 14:05Speaker 4: making efforts to get back into games last season, But
- 14:09Speaker 4: I don't think you know there were as many times,
- 14:11Speaker 4: certainly not over the first ten games where the Kraken
- 14:14Speaker 4: scored the first goal of the game. What is it,
- 14:16Speaker 4: seven of the of the of the first nine score
- 14:19Speaker 4: in the first goal of the game, holding on to
- 14:21Speaker 4: a lead in the third period. It's a very different
- 14:24Speaker 4: feeling now in that last twenty minutes than it was
- 14:27Speaker 4: last year. So to me, that's one of the biggest differences.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I have no problem with a clunker,
- 14:35Speaker 5: with ann clunker every now and again. It's when you
- 14:38Speaker 5: string together two, three, four, five plunkers that you start
- 14:42Speaker 5: to question things. But the Philly game, you know, I
- 14:46Speaker 5: loved when Laying came out and said I didn't like it.
- 14:50Speaker 5: You know, I wasn't happy with the performance. We weren't
- 14:53Speaker 5: good enough. And then I even tried to soften it
- 14:56Speaker 5: a little bit and I gave them an out and
- 14:58Speaker 5: I said, hey, did the schedule back to back? You
- 15:01Speaker 5: don't have it, you have injuries, YadA, YadA, YadA, does
- 15:03Speaker 5: that all does the situation play? And he goes, I
- 15:07Speaker 5: don't care, like we're supposed to win, and that just
- 15:10Speaker 5: it felt so good to hear him say that, and
- 15:13Speaker 5: I think it was the bounce back for me. You
- 15:15Speaker 5: go into Philadelphia, Joey de Koor gets or Washington rather,
- 15:18Speaker 5: Joey de Koor gets pulled for the first time that
- 15:20Speaker 5: I can remember. He's got a goals against over three
- 15:23Speaker 5: and a say percentage under nine, and he said, well
- 15:26Speaker 5: enough of that. And he comes back with back to
- 15:28Speaker 5: back games a shutout and arguably the toughest building to
- 15:32Speaker 5: play in in the NHL over the last year and
- 15:34Speaker 5: a half. And then you come home and you you know,
- 15:38Speaker 5: I said it on the post game show, I'm gonna
- 15:39Speaker 5: give darn Ol Nurse half a goal because it was
- 15:41Speaker 5: tipped in Joey had it. But then you know, you
- 15:44Speaker 5: beat the Oilers back to back for the first time ever,
- 15:47Speaker 5: just your fourth win all time against Edmonton. So I mean,
- 15:52Speaker 5: it was about as close to a perfect week as
- 15:55Speaker 5: you're gonna get. And I'm not putting too much stock
- 15:58Speaker 5: into the Philadelphia and the Washington games because the bounce
- 16:02Speaker 5: back for them was so good.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I would add on to that too. Not only
- 16:08Speaker 4: was the bounce back so good, but I think the
- 16:10Speaker 4: lesson in that week to the players was we cannot
- 16:14Speaker 4: play at a moderate level because they will lose. We
- 16:18Speaker 4: need to play at this top level. Not no mistakes.
- 16:22Speaker 4: No one could play a perfect game, but you know,
- 16:24Speaker 4: they've got to play the structure that Leane Lambert has
- 16:26Speaker 4: put out there, and if they don't, if they take
- 16:28Speaker 4: a shift off here and there, you're going to see
- 16:30Speaker 4: a Philadelphia or a Washington game. So better to get
- 16:33Speaker 4: that lesson early in the season rather than later in
- 16:35Speaker 4: the season when you're fighting maybe for a playoff spot.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Now that were forty eight hours past this here and
- 16:41Speaker 3: we can have this win, digest it a little bit more.
- 16:45Speaker 3: I can go back and think of three, maybe even
- 16:48Speaker 3: four plays that made a massive difference with me and
- 16:52Speaker 3: your question maybe was there enough to pull through with
- 16:56Speaker 3: it last year on that same level, I think for me,
- 16:59Speaker 3: number one was the Vince Dunn hit on Connor McDavid
- 17:02Speaker 3: and then boom, you go right back down Icen's score immediately.
- 17:06Speaker 3: There is no better way to inject a jolt into
- 17:09Speaker 3: a building than that kind of sequence. Then I think
- 17:12Speaker 3: the Joey to Cord save right before the horn to
- 17:15Speaker 3: end the period. Then I go back and think the
- 17:19Speaker 3: otherworldly shift that Ty Cartier, Ryan Winterton, etc. Had and
- 17:24Speaker 3: fits you nailed the goal call. I think right hook
- 17:28Speaker 3: line sinker. As far as what that shift meant to me,
- 17:31Speaker 3: it's right now club asslead for shift of the year.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Then I go and think of what Lane Lambert did
- 17:37Speaker 3: situation three by putting his veterans out, mixing his lineup
- 17:43Speaker 3: up in just an incredible coaching decision to put Schwartz
- 17:47Speaker 3: Benier's every they withstand the fire, go right back down,
- 17:51Speaker 3: make it three to one. That was your dagger. And
- 17:53Speaker 3: then despite the Oilers making it three to two, this
- 17:57Speaker 3: to me defines lane Lambert hockey right into the muck
- 18:01Speaker 3: of it. Then's done, lays down blocks of shot, game over.
- 18:05Speaker 3: First guy over Joey to court about bear hugs him.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Yeah, he jumped in front of a bullet there at
- 18:10Speaker 4: the end. That was an assassination coming towards Joey to
- 18:12Speaker 4: court and he jumped in front of a bullet and
- 18:14Speaker 4: the first guy to go top him on the head
- 18:16Speaker 4: was Joey to court. And I thought that was a
- 18:18Speaker 4: really cool way to end the game.
- 18:20Speaker 5: Yeah, I thought that that car Jay shift for me,
- 18:22Speaker 5: that line over the last couple of games, but in particular,
- 18:26Speaker 5: you know that that play was was was huge. I mean,
- 18:30Speaker 5: if if you'd had the prop bet of holding McDavid
- 18:33Speaker 5: off the score sheet, I would have taken that one.
- 18:36Speaker 5: You know what I mean. But listen, you're never going
- 18:40Speaker 5: to when you have a team at the Oilers, right,
- 18:43Speaker 5: it's never going to be easy. You know, you get
- 18:46Speaker 5: the first goal on the what second shift of the
- 18:48Speaker 5: game whatever it was, and then you knew the push
- 18:52Speaker 5: was coming, but you continue to frustrate them. You continue
- 18:56Speaker 5: to play the style that again we're nine games in,
- 18:59Speaker 5: so talk to me twenty nine games in, but the
- 19:03Speaker 5: style that has been so successful and so consistent early
- 19:07Speaker 5: on here, you're setting a tone early for the league,
- 19:11Speaker 5: and I think for your schedule. I mean, I can't
- 19:14Speaker 5: think of the oiler game, in particular, in the Winnipeg game.
- 19:17Speaker 5: I can't think of two better games played this season.
- 19:20Speaker 5: For a variety of different reasons. The result was the
- 19:23Speaker 5: same two points in the win column, but they were
- 19:27Speaker 5: just very different ways, very different styles. But ultimately the
- 19:35Speaker 5: goal and the objective was the same two points and.
- 19:37Speaker 4: You got them. Yeah. The Winnipeg game, and Mike and
- 19:40Speaker 4: I talked about this in the postgame a little bit
- 19:43Speaker 4: was all about structure and consistent shifts and keeping pucks
- 19:48Speaker 4: to the outside. Whereas the Edmonton win was a grind.
- 19:51Speaker 4: It was a grind. You got to grind for everything.
- 19:53Speaker 4: You know you're not gonna be able to win this
- 19:55Speaker 4: game one nothing, so you better go get a couple more.
- 19:58Speaker 4: And they did, and you knew that Edmonton was going
- 20:00Speaker 4: to come back and get on the board. It was
- 20:03Speaker 4: a grind of a game, but You're right, two different wins.
- 20:06Speaker 4: But I think the thing that stood out to me
- 20:09Speaker 4: and Mike and I also talked about this in the
- 20:11Speaker 4: postgame show, which was the X factor of the Edmonton win,
- 20:15Speaker 4: and that was Brandon Montour. Brandon Montur coming back into
- 20:19Speaker 4: the lineup. Like, I've never been in a locker room
- 20:23Speaker 4: where somebody's lost somebody that close to them, but I
- 20:27Speaker 4: have been in locker rooms where they've dealt with a
- 20:30Speaker 4: tough issue and they've been away from the team, and
- 20:32Speaker 4: having that player come back to the lineup, it just
- 20:36Speaker 4: injects a drug into the team that you just can't match.
- 20:40Speaker 4: And I think you saw that with the guys and
- 20:42Speaker 4: how they rallied around them in that game. So that
- 20:45Speaker 4: was definitely an X factor for me.
- 20:47Speaker 3: I said, it was the heaviest presser I had been
- 20:50Speaker 3: through my entire career, heaviest in my entire career. So
- 20:53Speaker 3: I'll put this up there. I mean, I don't think
- 20:56Speaker 3: you can really quantify how much Brandon Montur means here
- 20:59Speaker 3: to the dressing room, and then with the kind of
- 21:01Speaker 3: human being he is, how much he means to this
- 21:03Speaker 3: entire community. But I mean, how emotional was this seeing
- 21:06Speaker 3: him back on ice on Saturday.
- 21:08Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I think it was. And I think, you know,
- 21:11Speaker 5: having having never experienced that level of loss, you know,
- 21:18Speaker 5: I have no idea what it's like to have to
- 21:21Speaker 5: perform at the highest level of my ability in the
- 21:26Speaker 5: wake of something like that, let alone a brother, a parent,
- 21:29Speaker 5: a spouse, you know, someone very very close to you.
- 21:34Speaker 5: And again, I think for him to compartmentalize in the
- 21:37Speaker 5: way that he did, and who knows, maybe he was
- 21:40Speaker 5: just out there like, you know, I'm just gonna do
- 21:43Speaker 5: this until I can't do it anymore, you know what
- 21:45Speaker 5: I mean. Who knows what was really going through his mind.
- 21:50Speaker 5: But I mean, all you can do is commend him.
- 21:53Speaker 5: And I'll tell you what, man, I don't care if
- 21:55Speaker 5: he scored a hat trick in that game. I don't
- 21:58Speaker 5: care if he took one shift and and said that's it.
- 22:01Speaker 5: I can do it. The fact that he got out
- 22:03Speaker 5: there after being home for that long and and dealing
- 22:08Speaker 5: with that type of loss, just the fact that he
- 22:11Speaker 5: put the uniform on is commendable to me.
- 22:14Speaker 4: And then and then to see at the beginning of
- 22:16Speaker 4: the game basilly Pod Coles and come.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Up to him, Oh, yes, that short.
- 22:20Speaker 4: It was probably a half a second, little arm arm
- 22:23Speaker 4: around each other. I watched the video a couple of times.
- 22:26Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure I could see him mouthing the word brother.
- 22:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:29Speaker 4: And you know, we don't know what he said, but
- 22:32Speaker 4: to know that pod Coles and went through a similar
- 22:34Speaker 4: loss in the past year, that was a really cool
- 22:37Speaker 4: thing to see, just in terms of listen, these guys
- 22:40Speaker 4: are gladiators. They go, they go to war against each other.
- 22:42Speaker 4: They beat the crap out of each other every game.
- 22:45Speaker 4: But to recognize that before that puck dropped, he wanted
- 22:48Speaker 4: to go recognize that situation with Montour. I thought that
- 22:52Speaker 4: was really cool.
- 22:52Speaker 3: And then they shake hands at the end of every
- 22:54Speaker 3: playoff round and they say that the hockey world is
- 22:56Speaker 3: certainly a small world.
- 22:57Speaker 5: Fits yeah, And I was gonna say Pod Coles and
- 22:59Speaker 5: I mean again, he lost his dad. I think that
- 23:02Speaker 5: was his first game back or second game back since
- 23:05Speaker 5: he had been over in Russia for for a few
- 23:08Speaker 5: weeks with the loss of his father and his story
- 23:11Speaker 5: as well. His dad last year in the Cup final
- 23:15Speaker 5: was at every game the Oilers played. So again, luckily,
- 23:21Speaker 5: and and I don't I don't say that lightly. Luckily,
- 23:24Speaker 5: I have not had to experience that. So I don't
- 23:28Speaker 5: know what it's like, but I can't even begin to
- 23:30Speaker 5: imagine what those two players are going through on Saturday
- 23:35Speaker 5: and now as they try to to move on without
- 23:39Speaker 5: big pieces of their life.
- 23:41Speaker 3: We're getting set here for again Montreal coming up tomorrow night,
- 23:46Speaker 3: and then the New York Rangers here on Saturday. Alex Spouse,
- 23:48Speaker 3: by the way, is gonna be with us here in
- 23:50Speaker 3: just a bit on Crack and weekly the play by
- 23:52Speaker 3: play radio voice here for the New York Rangers as well.
- 23:54Speaker 3: I want to get down to Berkeley Catton because last
- 23:57Speaker 3: night or two nights ago, I should say, what assist
- 24:00Speaker 3: plus one had eleven minutes of ice time? Couple shots
- 24:04Speaker 3: on net, but also one block shot as well, was
- 24:07Speaker 3: in on the Jordan Eberley goal to make it one nothing.
- 24:10Speaker 3: And we're now four games into this where the Crack
- 24:14Speaker 3: can have to make a decision by game nine do
- 24:17Speaker 3: you keep him long term or do you send him
- 24:20Speaker 3: back to WHL spoke in So for Berkeley Catton, al
- 24:26Speaker 3: we address this a little bit and fits I'll give
- 24:28Speaker 3: you the floor on this. How much more does he
- 24:31Speaker 3: have to prove to stay here long term?
- 24:35Speaker 5: I mean, listen, it's the million dollar question that we're
- 24:39Speaker 5: not gonna have to answer after this season. I will
- 24:43Speaker 5: say that Berkeley Catton, for my money, has shown that
- 24:50Speaker 5: he's an NHL player. He's still learning the game, but
- 24:55Speaker 5: I haven't really seen him taking glaring steps back. Maybe
- 25:00Speaker 5: he plays well one game and then maybe the next game,
- 25:03Speaker 5: maybe he makes a mistake. That okay, rookie mistake. But again,
- 25:07Speaker 5: you're nineteen years old. I get it. Move on, We'll
- 25:10Speaker 5: play on. Louis Debrust for the Oilers broadcast crew. We
- 25:13Speaker 5: were talking about that the other day as well, and
- 25:15Speaker 5: I said that same thing, and he goes, that's not
- 25:17Speaker 5: a bad thing. He's nineteen. He's going to make mistakes,
- 25:20Speaker 5: and it's about how he rebounds. I do think that
- 25:23Speaker 5: he's done enough to have earned a spot on the team.
- 25:28Speaker 5: But the only problem, though, and Alan I talked about this,
- 25:32Speaker 5: is that if everyone was healthy, if McCann and if Coppococo,
- 25:37Speaker 5: and if all these guys were in the lineup every
- 25:40Speaker 5: single day, is Berkeley Catton here? And I think that's
- 25:44Speaker 5: the question that we have to answer. You know, what
- 25:47Speaker 5: does he have to prove? He's got to take a spot?
- 25:50Speaker 5: And while he I think has played very, very well.
- 25:54Speaker 5: You're not gonna put him on your fourth line. He
- 25:57Speaker 5: needs to be in a top minimally top nine, but
- 26:01Speaker 5: probably top six capacity. I don't know if he's there yet,
- 26:07Speaker 5: with everyone healthy, when Coco comes back, when Gadroau comes back,
- 26:13Speaker 5: and McCann when he comes back. Now again, you know,
- 26:17Speaker 5: we don't know the status of those guys. Cocko was
- 26:19Speaker 5: skating the other day. We don't know about Goodrow, We
- 26:22Speaker 5: don't know about McCann. Rker Evans is obviously on defense,
- 26:24Speaker 5: so he doesn't count for this exercise. But I think
- 26:29Speaker 5: that you know, it's gonna be a tough decision to make,
- 26:33Speaker 5: But I will say I think he's making the most
- 26:36Speaker 5: of his ability. But I just don't know if everyone's healthy,
- 26:40Speaker 5: if he's.
- 26:40Speaker 4: Here, Yeah, I would agree and disagree with some of
- 26:45Speaker 4: the I would agree in that he has played well
- 26:48Speaker 4: enough to show that he can play in the NHL.
- 26:51Speaker 5: YEP.
- 26:52Speaker 4: I don't know that he's taken a spot away from
- 26:55Speaker 4: a fully healthy cracking team.
- 26:57Speaker 5: Yet, and I agree.
- 26:58Speaker 4: I agree, Yeah, when I look at the middle of
- 27:01Speaker 4: the of the of the forward forward lines, he's not
- 27:04Speaker 4: going to take Benier Stevensoner rights position.
- 27:07Speaker 3: And you're not gonna Yeah, you're not gonna.
- 27:09Speaker 4: Play him on the fourth line. So so the middle
- 27:12Speaker 4: is out for Berkeley Cat and staying this season. When
- 27:15Speaker 4: you look at that left side, obviously McCann has got
- 27:18Speaker 4: that top spot when he comes back whenever that is,
- 27:21Speaker 4: then you've got Marchinton Schwartz. I don't think he's taken
- 27:24Speaker 4: either of those spots either. So again you're back down
- 27:27Speaker 4: to the fourth line. With that, we're car Chase. It's
- 27:29Speaker 4: in the left wing. So the answer to my question
- 27:32Speaker 4: or your career question, Mike, is he's played well enough
- 27:34Speaker 4: to show that he can play at this level. I
- 27:37Speaker 4: don't think he's taking anybody spot away yet.
- 27:42Speaker 1: When it comes.
- 27:43Speaker 5: And that's and that's and that's what I was saying about.
- 27:45Speaker 5: You know, he's earned a spot, but I don't know
- 27:48Speaker 5: if he's on this team if everyone's healthy. And I'm
- 27:50Speaker 5: with you, right, okay, exactly, Yeah, I think I may have.
- 27:55Speaker 5: I may have went around the world a bit till
- 27:57Speaker 5: on that one, but no, I'm I'm one years side,
- 27:59Speaker 5: one hundred percent.
- 28:00Speaker 3: With Coppo Coco back soon, we presume, because he is
- 28:03Speaker 3: making progress and Lane Lambert said this week is going
- 28:05Speaker 3: to be pretty telling. As far as when his return
- 28:07Speaker 3: date's going to be, Jared McCann is still day to day.
- 28:10Speaker 3: We don't know yet though when he's due back. So
- 28:13Speaker 3: right now, here's how your top six looks. Caton Beaniers,
- 28:17Speaker 3: Eberly march Mint, Stevenson, Tolvenan, and he got Jayden Schwartz
- 28:21Speaker 3: a leading score right now playing on a line with
- 28:23Speaker 3: Shane Wright and Yonnie Newman. So Coco, I would assume
- 28:28Speaker 3: would plug right up with Matty Benier's he's your right winger.
- 28:32Speaker 3: And then as far as Jared McCann, is that going
- 28:35Speaker 3: to be maybe a left wing thing with Beaniars, a
- 28:37Speaker 3: left wing thing with Stevenson, We'll see. But what's your
- 28:40Speaker 3: feel on this right now?
- 28:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know that the tolven and Stevenson Marchmint
- 28:46Speaker 4: line has been cemented yet. I think that that Lane
- 28:51Speaker 4: Lambert is still looking for more from that line. I
- 28:53Speaker 4: think Stevenson has played well individually from a face off standpoint.
- 28:57Speaker 4: I don't know if Toulvenan and Marchman are clicking with
- 29:00Speaker 4: Stevenson the way that Lane Lambert would like. So if
- 29:03Speaker 4: he's going to if he's going to fiddle with the line,
- 29:05Speaker 4: it's probably that one. I don't see any reason why
- 29:08Speaker 4: when the Can comes back, he wouldn't take that left
- 29:11Speaker 4: wing spot from Catton, and when Coco comes back, he
- 29:15Speaker 4: wouldn't take that right wing spot from every which means
- 29:18Speaker 4: where does every go. I've got to believe it's probably
- 29:20Speaker 4: to that second line with Stevenson, which pushes his Toulvenen
- 29:24Speaker 4: down the spot as well. And then you get into
- 29:26Speaker 4: the Newman and Winterton conversations. But you know, it's it's
- 29:30Speaker 4: it's fun for us to speculate. We just don't know
- 29:33Speaker 4: the timing of these events. And until now or until that,
- 29:37Speaker 4: until that time comes when Cocko comes back, they'll figure
- 29:40Speaker 4: that out then. So they're gonna have to deal probably
- 29:42Speaker 4: with the right wing spot before they deal with them
- 29:45Speaker 4: Can return. But once they're both back, yeah, I like
- 29:49Speaker 4: I said, Carton probably goes back to watching a lot
- 29:52Speaker 4: of games from the from the press bridge and getting
- 29:55Speaker 4: ready to go to World Juniors.
- 29:57Speaker 5: Yeah. I mean, I think just looking at the line
- 30:00Speaker 5: sheet from from the game against Edmonton on Saturday, I
- 30:04Speaker 5: like March Mint Stevenson, every line. I think that line
- 30:10Speaker 5: has a lot of IQ. You've got offense, you've got
- 30:15Speaker 5: Marchman who's not afraid to stir it up, and then
- 30:17Speaker 5: all of that. But I don't know if McCann comes back,
- 30:22Speaker 5: you know, so you go nineteen ten to seven. Maybe
- 30:25Speaker 5: you put Coco on the right side of that March
- 30:28Speaker 5: Min Stevenson line, and you know, you've got two players
- 30:32Speaker 5: in MARCHMNT and in Coco who aren't afraid to go
- 30:36Speaker 5: to the net, which you drop Toulvenin down to Schwartz,
- 30:39Speaker 5: right Tolvenen again, I think that line has got on
- 30:44Speaker 5: paper lose some potential. And then as of right now,
- 30:46Speaker 5: Gadreu's out for a while, so you're gonna go Cartier, Myers,
- 30:50Speaker 5: Winterton slash Newman. But again, Winterton and Cargia I think
- 30:56Speaker 5: have been playing lights out the last couple of games.
- 30:58Speaker 5: So Newman's your or is your odd man out in
- 31:01Speaker 5: that scenario? But yeah, I mean I'm with you. I
- 31:04Speaker 5: think the odd man out in this entire situation is
- 31:08Speaker 5: Berkeley Catton. And then you're asking yourself, you keep them
- 31:11Speaker 5: up here to practice with the team, go to World Juniors,
- 31:13Speaker 5: and then you send them back to Spokane if you're
- 31:16Speaker 5: gonna burn the nine games already and eat up the
- 31:19Speaker 5: year I mean, because maybe out of necessity, are we
- 31:22Speaker 5: gonna get those guys back in the next five games,
- 31:25Speaker 5: or do you sit you bring Hayden back in, maybe
- 31:28Speaker 5: sit Catton for a game or two to stretch that
- 31:30Speaker 5: timeline out a little bit. There's a lot of questions
- 31:33Speaker 5: that I don't envy Lane and Jason Bostroll cracking GM
- 31:39Speaker 5: over the next you know, ten to twenty one days here.
- 31:43Speaker 1: See, I actually see.
- 31:44Speaker 3: I have two thoughts on that, and I think number one,
- 31:48Speaker 3: it goes right back to Berkeley Catton and if he's
- 31:51Speaker 3: gonna stay here long term, is he going to perform
- 31:54Speaker 3: head and shoulders above the rest, because that has got
- 31:57Speaker 3: to be the bar right now with every other veteran
- 32:00Speaker 3: that he's up again, so to speak, here in this lineup.
- 32:04Speaker 3: And that's just the reality here of where they are.
- 32:06Speaker 3: And number two, this is almost kind of like a
- 32:09Speaker 3: coach's dream, but a coach's dilemma when you get players
- 32:13Speaker 3: who are playing so well that you are creating competition
- 32:16Speaker 3: in your lineup and they are making decisions hard for you.
- 32:21Speaker 3: This is what it's going to come down to, is
- 32:23Speaker 3: can they make decisions hard here for Lane Lambert? And
- 32:26Speaker 3: part of this here is also dealing with the three
- 32:28Speaker 3: goalie system. It takes you know, someone else away here
- 32:32Speaker 3: from the ford and defense that you could easily fill.
- 32:34Speaker 3: But that's just the reality. Where does cat and fit,
- 32:37Speaker 3: Where it could car Sheate fit? Where could Winterton fit?
- 32:40Speaker 3: And Yannie Newman who's playing himself out of that conversation.
- 32:43Speaker 3: He's got three goals already, but still a lot of
- 32:45Speaker 3: veterans here in this lineup, and for the next few weeks,
- 32:48Speaker 3: this is how it's going to roll out because they
- 32:50Speaker 3: are still competing for a long term spot.
- 32:52Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree. I think that this team's going to
- 32:56Speaker 4: have some difficult decisions to make once they're healthy. You know,
- 33:01Speaker 4: I think Winton had a great game in the in
- 33:03Speaker 4: the Edmonton game, but he probably probably his best game
- 33:07Speaker 4: car as well. You know, when Goodroau comes back, I
- 33:10Speaker 4: have to believe Ben Meyers drops down to Coachella and
- 33:13Speaker 4: he gets that center spot back. So you know, the
- 33:16Speaker 4: questions are going to be on the wings. Like I said,
- 33:18Speaker 4: other than Goodrow coming back to that fourth line, the
- 33:21Speaker 4: questions are going to be on the wings and and
- 33:23Speaker 4: what happens with Caton and Newman and uh and Winterton
- 33:29Speaker 4: when when we're healthy.
- 33:30Speaker 5: All right, and I think real quick, Mike, I think too.
- 33:33Speaker 5: You know, this team is five two and two through
- 33:37Speaker 5: nine games without McCann, without Cocko and Evans and Goodrow,
- 33:43Speaker 5: right or I mean Goodroux was over the first handful
- 33:46Speaker 5: of games.
- 33:47Speaker 9: But when when these guys get back, and let's say
- 33:51Speaker 9: the Kraken are still on this trajectory of taking you know,
- 33:56Speaker 9: five out of every six points or five out of
- 33:59Speaker 9: every seven points, you know what I mean, and you're
- 34:02Speaker 9: still in second place two weeks from now.
- 34:04Speaker 5: When these guys come back, you don't want to upset
- 34:07Speaker 5: the apple cart too much, you know what I mean.
- 34:09Speaker 5: You're trying to find where these guys go. So that's
- 34:11Speaker 5: another wrinkle in the system. You know, if again, I'll
- 34:17Speaker 5: go back to you know, Cat and Beaniers Everly. So
- 34:21Speaker 5: let's say we'll put McCann up there for Mccanvaniers ever League.
- 34:24Speaker 5: Those two are clicking well. Then Coco comes back. But
- 34:28Speaker 5: Mccannvaneers and Everly have got points in hypothetically five straight games.
- 34:32Speaker 5: Are you really trying to break up that line? Because
- 34:35Speaker 5: they perform so well, right Cartchia and Winterton have been
- 34:39Speaker 5: really good on either side of Ben Myers, so you
- 34:42Speaker 5: have to imagine that those two when Gadrou comes back,
- 34:45Speaker 5: are still gonna have a damn good line. Are you
- 34:49Speaker 5: really gonna want to take Winterton out of the lineup
- 34:51Speaker 5: if he's complimenting Krts and Goodrow in that way? So
- 34:55Speaker 5: there's another area I think that we have to look
- 34:58Speaker 5: at if And again this is all if in hypotheticals
- 35:02Speaker 5: and down the road, but if this team continues to
- 35:04Speaker 5: do well, you really don't want to muck things up
- 35:08Speaker 5: too much.
- 35:09Speaker 4: One more piece of speculation that I'll add, maybe as
- 35:12Speaker 4: a wrinkle, but I'd love to hear both your thoughts
- 35:15Speaker 4: on it. Fifth you and I had a conversation with
- 35:17Speaker 4: a third person last night pre game where we talked
- 35:20Speaker 4: about how long can the crack and play this style
- 35:23Speaker 4: of play? Yeah? You know, I saw the article today
- 35:26Speaker 4: that oldest teams in the league. It turns out Winnipeg's
- 35:29Speaker 4: actually the oldest team, but Seattle's in that kind of
- 35:33Speaker 4: bottom third or top third. How you want to range
- 35:34Speaker 4: it in terms of age? Yeah, you know, is this
- 35:38Speaker 4: a team where over an a two game season, they're
- 35:42Speaker 4: just going to have a couple two three guys out constantly.
- 35:45Speaker 4: It's going to be different people but they're going to
- 35:47Speaker 4: need this depth that they have right now that they're
- 35:50Speaker 4: winning with because of the way they're going to play
- 35:52Speaker 4: these eighty two games. And you know that that could
- 35:55Speaker 4: be part of the plan as well.
- 35:57Speaker 5: It's hard, it's heavy, it's a grinding style, and you know, everyone,
- 36:04Speaker 5: it's the NHL. No one's gonna be one hundred percent
- 36:07Speaker 5: healthy at all times. But how many times have we
- 36:10Speaker 5: seen guys walking down the aisle, walking off the plane,
- 36:13Speaker 5: walking down the stairs and there's a little bit of
- 36:16Speaker 5: a limp, there's a little bit of a you know,
- 36:20Speaker 5: it is a rock in your shoe. There's a couple,
- 36:22Speaker 5: maybe one or two extra guys with one or two
- 36:25Speaker 5: extra ice bags. Right. This is a demanding style that
- 36:30Speaker 5: Lane has. It's working. But going back to that conversation
- 36:34Speaker 5: that we had, is it sustainable over the eighty two games.
- 36:38Speaker 5: It's going to have to be because you know, Lane
- 36:40Speaker 5: is a no excuse, no nonsense coach. However, I think
- 36:44Speaker 5: you're right like this, we may have to get used
- 36:47Speaker 5: to a lot of day to day. It's a lot
- 36:51Speaker 5: of week two weeks. How many guys on this roster
- 36:54Speaker 5: are gonna play all eighty two maybe Adam Larson's about
- 36:57Speaker 5: the only one. But yeah, there might not be a
- 36:59Speaker 5: a lot of eighty two games played players on this
- 37:03Speaker 5: team this season.
- 37:04Speaker 4: See maybe more opportunities for Coachella players coming up for
- 37:07Speaker 4: that reason.
- 37:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I kind of use the baseball comparison of this.
- 37:11Speaker 3: It's like, how much can you fill your pitching staff
- 37:14Speaker 3: with guys are going to max out there? Or I'm
- 37:15Speaker 3: trying to throw one hundred miles an hour as well.
- 37:17Speaker 3: I mean you can dial it back a little bit,
- 37:19Speaker 3: but I mean velocity attends to me the name of
- 37:21Speaker 3: the game here, Whereas so in hockey, we're starting to
- 37:24Speaker 3: see bullyball make its way back now into the NHL.
- 37:28Speaker 3: I think for me it goes down to two things.
- 37:30Speaker 3: I think, number one, yes, you have to play a
- 37:34Speaker 3: certain style and you have to play physically. You have
- 37:37Speaker 3: to grind it out, but there will be injuries along
- 37:41Speaker 3: the way.
- 37:41Speaker 2: So number two.
- 37:42Speaker 3: Then I look at this where and I say, you
- 37:44Speaker 3: want to win now? And this team is said they
- 37:47Speaker 3: want to win now. That's why they've retained so many veterans,
- 37:50Speaker 3: that's why they're trying to slow play their prospects. But
- 37:54Speaker 3: there's two ways to do this. One do you open
- 37:57Speaker 3: the flood gates like Edmonton, they're not built that way.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Er two, can you find a way to grind it
- 38:01Speaker 3: out and win games two to one or three to two.
- 38:04Speaker 3: You don't have to rely on six to seven to
- 38:07Speaker 3: eight guys to get you twenty five thirty goals up
- 38:10Speaker 3: and down your lineup. What you can do to rely
- 38:12Speaker 3: on is play good, sound, structured defense and get reliable
- 38:16Speaker 3: goaltending every game. That's gonna be your ultimate out card
- 38:21Speaker 3: right there. That's your outpitch in this game for the
- 38:24Speaker 3: Kraken is can you get defense? Can you get goaltending?
- 38:26Speaker 3: And so far they're getting it. The reality is we're
- 38:29Speaker 3: gonna probably be seeing guys on the shelf, as you
- 38:31Speaker 3: said over and over and over, but can you avoid
- 38:33Speaker 3: the injuries here to the big key guys?
- 38:36Speaker 5: And I also think and I think too. You know,
- 38:39Speaker 5: we talked to JT about this all the time. Because
- 38:41Speaker 5: of the condensed schedule as it is right the crack
- 38:44Speaker 5: in this week, I think this is the first of
- 38:46Speaker 5: four occasions that they're gonna have more than two games
- 38:50Speaker 5: two days off in between games. This team is playing
- 38:53Speaker 5: every second or every third day all year long. You're
- 38:57Speaker 5: gonna see a lot more optional skates. You're gonna see
- 39:00Speaker 5: a lot more cancel practices. You're gonna see a lot
- 39:03Speaker 5: more load management.
- 39:04Speaker 3: Right, It's not to reward the players, it's to help
- 39:10Speaker 3: them heal.
- 39:11Speaker 5: Yeah, hundre percent, right on hundred percent. Like I mean,
- 39:13Speaker 5: we listen, they're they're we we can probably and again
- 39:17Speaker 5: this is all speculation, but I mean between now and Christmas,
- 39:21Speaker 5: I'm guarantee. I bet you we see fewer than ten
- 39:25Speaker 5: full practices between now and Christmas. Right, Like, you're gonna
- 39:30Speaker 5: have some optionals, your morning skates are gonna be get
- 39:33Speaker 5: what you need and get off, you know what I mean.
- 39:36Speaker 5: But because you're playing every day or every third day,
- 39:39Speaker 5: uh for the most of the season, you know, you
- 39:42Speaker 5: gotta find ways to keep guys healthy, holding guys out
- 39:45Speaker 5: in practices, maybe not going as heavy in practices. Those
- 39:49Speaker 5: are some areas that potentially we could see uh being
- 39:54Speaker 5: used to keep guys fresh for games.
- 39:55Speaker 3: So how is this gonna hold up against the New
- 39:57Speaker 3: York Ranger. It's great time to bring in. Here are
- 40:00Speaker 3: gus for cracking weekly on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. That
- 40:02Speaker 3: is Alex Faus, play by play voice for the New
- 40:05Speaker 3: York Rangers on the radio side, Alex, welcome back. Great
- 40:09Speaker 3: to have you, great to see you also take on
- 40:11Speaker 3: a new adventure here play by play voice for the
- 40:13Speaker 3: Rangers side. And I'll just ask you this way as
- 40:16Speaker 3: far as how you're doing, what does it mean to
- 40:18Speaker 3: take on this kind of opportunity with this kind of franchise.
- 40:21Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 40:23Speaker 10: You know, there's no place like home, right I'm a
- 40:25Speaker 10: native New Yorker and to have the opportunity to work
- 40:29Speaker 10: for your hometown team, a team you you grew up
- 40:32Speaker 10: rooting for, you know, it's a it's a dream come true.
- 40:36Speaker 10: You know, sometimes you got got to be in the
- 40:39Speaker 10: right place at the right time, and that certainly was
- 40:42Speaker 10: the case here. So grateful for the opportunity to be
- 40:45Speaker 10: able to be a part of this broadcast crew. And
- 40:49Speaker 10: you know, they've always been a you know, a group
- 40:52Speaker 10: that I've I've looked up to as one of the
- 40:54Speaker 10: best in the business. So to be able to work
- 40:56Speaker 10: with the folks at MSG Network is just it's a
- 40:58Speaker 10: professional dream come true as well. Never mind the crest
- 41:01Speaker 10: on the front.
- 41:02Speaker 3: Of the jersey, I can't I can't say enough and
- 41:05Speaker 3: how happy I was for you when the news broke
- 41:07Speaker 3: that you were jumping on board full time. And I
- 41:09Speaker 3: know that in this business we're often you know, told
- 41:12Speaker 3: be yourself, don't copy somebody else here. But I mean,
- 41:16Speaker 3: with the transition and a legend like Sam Rose and
- 41:19Speaker 3: moving on after so many years, what kind of a
- 41:22Speaker 3: legacy has he left in the boot for others here
- 41:25Speaker 3: to follow.
- 41:26Speaker 10: Well, at the bottom line is that Sam was all classed,
- 41:31Speaker 10: and you know, he and Joe both just you know,
- 41:34Speaker 10: when they came into town, when the Rangers were in
- 41:38Speaker 10: the and the MSG networks covering the game, you knew
- 41:41Speaker 10: that let's say you were an opposing coach or imposing
- 41:44Speaker 10: GM or a referee or whatnot, and you know you
- 41:48Speaker 10: have a chance to talk with those two guys, you
- 41:51Speaker 10: just come away feeling like, Wow, this this was the
- 41:54Speaker 10: classiest interaction I've ever had. And that's how I felt,
- 41:57Speaker 10: you know, when I was in LA even it got
- 41:59Speaker 10: to meet those guys for the first time. You know,
- 42:01Speaker 10: I grew up watching Sam Rose and John Davidson on TV, right,
- 42:05Speaker 10: and to be able to, you know, meet somebody who
- 42:09Speaker 10: you've looked up to in this business, you know, it
- 42:11Speaker 10: couldn't have been nicer. And you know, got to know
- 42:15Speaker 10: me as a New Yorker too, and I got to,
- 42:17Speaker 10: you know, be around for his final couple of years
- 42:19Speaker 10: here on a on a part time basis, and it
- 42:23Speaker 10: was kind of awesome to to be able to swap
- 42:25Speaker 10: stories from, you know, growing up in the city here.
- 42:27Speaker 4: A bit of a rocky start for the Rangers, losing
- 42:31Speaker 4: five to one two Calgary Sunday night.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Uh, what are.
- 42:34Speaker 4: Some of the challenges you think the Rangers are facing
- 42:36Speaker 4: that's not really aligning with the external expectations for this group?
- 42:40Speaker 10: You know, I think you can go back to some
- 42:44Speaker 10: of the injuries that they've had to deal with, which
- 42:47Speaker 10: may not seem all that significant on the surface, but
- 42:49Speaker 10: our Timmy Paneren and JT. Miller both had what I
- 42:53Speaker 10: would describe as false starts in training camp. They were
- 42:55Speaker 10: both banged up, didn't get the full camp, and I
- 42:58Speaker 10: firmly believe they may not have been one hundred percent
- 43:01Speaker 10: when the season got underway. And then shortly after the
- 43:04Speaker 10: season started, Vincent Trocheck went down with injury. And you're
- 43:08Speaker 10: talking about a guy who you know, is one of
- 43:10Speaker 10: the top centermen in the league. The plan was to
- 43:14Speaker 10: have Mika's avantaje ad play on the wing this season,
- 43:18Speaker 10: and not be a full time center like he's been
- 43:21Speaker 10: in the past. Well, that plan immediately got torn to
- 43:25Speaker 10: bits when Trocheck went down with injury. You know, the
- 43:30Speaker 10: feeling was that they wanted to get Mika up on
- 43:32Speaker 10: the fore check, a little bit more on the wing,
- 43:35Speaker 10: and he's bought into kind of a more physical north
- 43:39Speaker 10: south game. But without Trocheck in the middle, you're talking
- 43:42Speaker 10: about a guy who is grade five on five, a
- 43:44Speaker 10: point producer, is on your top power play unit, kills penalties,
- 43:49Speaker 10: never mind slots the rest.
- 43:51Speaker 2: Of your forwards where they should be.
- 43:53Speaker 10: The knock on effect from that injury, I think has
- 43:56Speaker 10: created a lot of problems. You Know, the first couple
- 43:59Speaker 10: of weeks of this season, you could look at the
- 44:01Speaker 10: Rangers record and say, well, you know, they're losing all
- 44:04Speaker 10: these games. But actually the sense was, and I'm not
- 44:08Speaker 10: just talking from a team standpoint, but from the fans
- 44:11Speaker 10: from the media covering the team, that their process was fine.
- 44:15Speaker 10: They were out playing their opposition at five on five,
- 44:19Speaker 10: they were dominating them defensively, and the issue was they
- 44:22Speaker 10: weren't getting goal scoring.
- 44:24Speaker 2: Well, now their game.
- 44:25Speaker 10: Has slipped a little bit defensively and the goal scoring
- 44:29Speaker 10: hasn't picked up.
- 44:30Speaker 2: With it to try to cover for all of that.
- 44:32Speaker 10: So what you wind up with is a team that
- 44:36Speaker 10: you know, probably shouldn't have, you know, as low a
- 44:40Speaker 10: record as they have, but by virtue of not winning
- 44:43Speaker 10: games where they outplayed their opposition, they find themselves in
- 44:47Speaker 10: this early hole.
- 44:49Speaker 3: I'm sure that things weren't going to script early here
- 44:52Speaker 3: as far as what Mike Sullivan had intended off the
- 44:55Speaker 3: bat here for his brand new job coming over from
- 44:57Speaker 3: the Pittsburgh Penguins, as well as Alex Bausch joining us
- 45:00Speaker 3: right now and crack and weekly. But what have we
- 45:02Speaker 3: learned so far with what Mike Sullivan is all about
- 45:05Speaker 3: his core values and how much more time that this
- 45:09Speaker 3: team needs to really get things locked in as far
- 45:11Speaker 3: as his vision.
- 45:13Speaker 10: To be honest, I thought that there was a lot
- 45:15Speaker 10: of buy in right away in training camp. I think
- 45:18Speaker 10: this group was craving more structure, more of a set standard,
- 45:24Speaker 10: and Mike Sullivan has been adamant about that this group
- 45:28Speaker 10: needed to set a new bar as far as a
- 45:30Speaker 10: standard of play. And going back to the first couple
- 45:34Speaker 10: of games, you know, they play Washington really tough, and
- 45:37Speaker 10: Charlie Lingern put in a great performance. They play the
- 45:39Speaker 10: Mayle Leafs really tough and lose that one. You know,
- 45:42Speaker 10: over time, you look at some of their early results
- 45:46Speaker 10: and some of their tight losses to begin this season,
- 45:50Speaker 10: and they were playing to that standard. They were playing
- 45:53Speaker 10: what the way Mike Sullivan wanted them to play, by
- 45:58Speaker 10: being responsible, by playing hard North South. And I think that,
- 46:03Speaker 10: you know, as they've slipped a little bit here and
- 46:06Speaker 10: lost a couple of games, you're seeing Sulivin trying to
- 46:10Speaker 10: bring the group back to that standard. You know, the
- 46:13Speaker 10: Rangers made a clear investment in Sulivin as their head coach,
- 46:17Speaker 10: and you know they they feel that the way that
- 46:20Speaker 10: he runs this operation on the day to day is
- 46:25Speaker 10: absolutely what this group needs.
- 46:26Speaker 2: And I think you're seeing it that.
- 46:27Speaker 10: When this team is playing at its best, it's probably
- 46:30Speaker 10: the most defensively sound you've seen the Rangers.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Play in a long long time.
- 46:36Speaker 10: But now it's just about, okay, how can you how
- 46:38Speaker 10: can you pair that with you know, some of the
- 46:41Speaker 10: creative skill on this team and getting a little bit
- 46:43Speaker 10: more finished right now.
- 46:46Speaker 4: Sometimes when you're trying to get over that that position
- 46:49Speaker 4: of maybe not playing to where you expect a team
- 46:51Speaker 4: to play, you can look at areas of improvement when
- 46:55Speaker 4: you when you talk about training camp and the vets
- 46:58Speaker 4: and you know maybe what they did or didn't get
- 47:00Speaker 4: out of that in preseason, and then you look at, well,
- 47:03Speaker 4: who do you think when you're putting down the roster,
- 47:05Speaker 4: who do you think has the most upside? Get this
- 47:08Speaker 4: thing righted a little bit?
- 47:11Speaker 10: You know, I think they're they're looking at two guys
- 47:14Speaker 10: that you know have been off to slow starts, Will
- 47:16Speaker 10: Cooley and Alexi la Frenier. You know, both were expected
- 47:20Speaker 10: to carry more of a higher load this year. I
- 47:24Speaker 10: mean la Frenier, you know, his body of work speaks
- 47:27Speaker 10: for itself, right and the skill is plainly obvious, but
- 47:30Speaker 10: can't he keep that up.
- 47:31Speaker 2: On a consistent basis?
- 47:34Speaker 10: For you know, Will Cooley, who burst onto the scene
- 47:37Speaker 10: a couple of years ago, I mean this is his
- 47:39Speaker 10: third full NHL season.
- 47:42Speaker 2: I think what.
- 47:43Speaker 10: What's interesting with a younger player is when you elevate
- 47:47Speaker 10: him into a new role, is then pressure starting to
- 47:52Speaker 10: set in? Okay, I have to match expectations of being
- 47:55Speaker 10: in a certain place, and then do you wind up
- 47:57Speaker 10: maybe trying to do a little bit too much? And
- 48:00Speaker 10: we see this all the time with younger players around
- 48:03Speaker 10: the league. I mean, Will is still only twenty three
- 48:05Speaker 10: years of age. It's hard to, you know, instantly be
- 48:10Speaker 10: thrust into a newer role where you're expected to carry
- 48:15Speaker 10: more of the team and not stray from the simple
- 48:21Speaker 10: game that got you there. So right now it's about
- 48:24Speaker 10: how you can, you know, get this guy who plays
- 48:27Speaker 10: a really great North South game and stick with it.
- 48:30Speaker 4: Right So, you're you're out on a four game road
- 48:35Speaker 4: trip West Coast, you're one game in. Does being out
- 48:39Speaker 4: on the road do you think that helps kind of
- 48:41Speaker 4: galvanize the guys a little bit, to get away from
- 48:45Speaker 4: MSG for a few days. Do you think that helps
- 48:47Speaker 4: get the team right it a little bit?
- 48:49Speaker 10: You know, I think given the way that you know
- 48:51Speaker 10: they struggled at home to begin, you know it can't hurt.
- 48:56Speaker 10: I think we hear often in today's NHL that go
- 48:59Speaker 10: on the road, regardless of which team you play on,
- 49:05Speaker 10: is actually more of a structured environment than when you're
- 49:08Speaker 10: playing home games.
- 49:09Speaker 2: And we've actually seen it across the league.
- 49:11Speaker 10: I was looking up and we're taping this on a Monday.
- 49:16Speaker 10: I was looking at the league wide points percentage of
- 49:18Speaker 10: ball road teams. It's five point forty one to begin
- 49:21Speaker 10: the season. So across the league you're seeing this where
- 49:24Speaker 10: when teams get out on the road and they can
- 49:27Speaker 10: jail as a group and they can leave you know,
- 49:31Speaker 10: some of the things that you may occupy their time
- 49:33Speaker 10: when they're at home, family obligations and other things.
- 49:38Speaker 2: It actually sometimes can aid in performance.
- 49:40Speaker 10: So I think that's what the hope is for this
- 49:42Speaker 10: Rangers team is that they can take advantage of being
- 49:45Speaker 10: on their longest road trip of the season stacked together
- 49:48Speaker 10: a couple of results, feel more confident about their game
- 49:51Speaker 10: when they return home.
- 49:52Speaker 3: Alex this is going to lead to the reunion game
- 49:55Speaker 3: that we have certainly been pining for for a while.
- 49:57Speaker 3: On the Kraken side, we'll see if o'cacka was back.
- 50:01Speaker 3: But Ryan Lindgren is here, and now Will Borgan is
- 50:04Speaker 3: back in Seattle for the first time since the trade.
- 50:06Speaker 3: From this last season, I mean, he's earned playing time
- 50:09Speaker 3: up and down the defensive pair. But through ten games
- 50:12Speaker 3: so far and sixty one overall, what's the Will Borgan
- 50:17Speaker 3: experience like in New York and how he fits in
- 50:19Speaker 3: here to Mike Sullivan's plans.
- 50:22Speaker 10: Well, we're actually at a couple of reunion events here
- 50:26Speaker 10: with JT. Miller as we taped this on a Monday
- 50:29Speaker 10: before the Rangers playing Vancouver on Tuesday, So that's gonna
- 50:32Speaker 10: be a big one to mark down.
- 50:33Speaker 2: But you know, I think when when.
- 50:35Speaker 10: The Rangers traded for Will Borgan in the Coppococo deal, they.
- 50:41Speaker 2: Were looking for some.
- 50:45Speaker 10: More consistent play out of their back end, just a sturdy,
- 50:49Speaker 10: stay at home defenseman. I have been impressed from the
- 50:52Speaker 10: moment Borgan got here. You know, I don't think you
- 50:56Speaker 10: know he's going to tell you that he has an
- 50:58Speaker 10: offensive streak to his game, but he'll step up joined
- 51:00Speaker 10: the rush.
- 51:01Speaker 2: He's got a pretty good shot.
- 51:04Speaker 10: I think everybody around the organization has been really happy
- 51:07Speaker 10: with what Will brings to the table.
- 51:10Speaker 2: He plays with a bit of an edge. He's a
- 51:12Speaker 2: tough guy. I mean I've seen already.
- 51:15Speaker 10: I mean we're less than a month into the season,
- 51:17Speaker 10: and he's taken some punishment, whether it's block shots or
- 51:21Speaker 10: tough hits, and he keeps on ticking. He is one
- 51:25Speaker 10: tough customer and I think he's been a great fit
- 51:28Speaker 10: for what this Rangers team wants to be.
- 51:30Speaker 4: Identity wise, Alex talk a little bit about sister and
- 51:36Speaker 4: obviously a top goaltender, in this league. What's he like?
- 51:41Speaker 4: What are the fans need to do about him in
- 51:43Speaker 4: terms of how he approaches the game. You know, they
- 51:46Speaker 4: see the stats obviously, but talk a little bit about
- 51:49Speaker 4: his professionalism as a goaltender.
- 51:51Speaker 10: Boy, he's dedicated to his craft. You know, any goalie
- 51:58Speaker 10: will tell you that they're hard on themselves.
- 52:00Speaker 2: I think Igor channels it in such.
- 52:02Speaker 10: A way where we were looking up some stats the
- 52:05Speaker 10: other day that you know he gets. He lost to
- 52:07Speaker 10: San Jose in a six or five overtime decision, and
- 52:11Speaker 10: in his career he's bounced back from those better than
- 52:15Speaker 10: most goaltenders. He has a really he has a gaudy
- 52:18Speaker 10: win loss percentage in his favor when he's coming off
- 52:22Speaker 10: of a loss where he's given up let's say five
- 52:25Speaker 10: or more goals, And it speaks to, you know, his
- 52:27Speaker 10: professionalism and how deeply he you know, studies the game.
- 52:33Speaker 10: You know, his his movement when he's square to the puck.
- 52:36Speaker 10: You know, I would put him up against any goaltender
- 52:38Speaker 10: in the league, and I'd say, you know, he's probably
- 52:41Speaker 10: the best in that regard. You know, until last year,
- 52:45Speaker 10: he had won thirty six plus games three seasons in
- 52:48Speaker 10: a row. I mean, you're you're talking about the kreme
- 52:51Speaker 10: de la creme in this league. That's why he earned
- 52:53Speaker 10: that large contract extension, the highest for a goaltender in
- 52:58Speaker 10: league history.
- 53:00Speaker 2: But you know, I think where it's so funny.
- 53:03Speaker 10: You look at his goals against and he got binged
- 53:06Speaker 10: up a little bit to start the road trip in.
- 53:08Speaker 2: Calgary, but he had a sub two goals against.
- 53:10Speaker 10: Average and he's a game under five hundred starting this
- 53:13Speaker 10: road trip, you know, so it just goes to show
- 53:16Speaker 10: kind of where the Rangers are at that you know,
- 53:18Speaker 10: he's done his part but needs a little bit of
- 53:21Speaker 10: run support.
- 53:23Speaker 5: Alex.
- 53:23Speaker 3: Up next will be Montreal on the crack inside. They've
- 53:26Speaker 3: seen them once at Bell Center. The Rangers, I've already
- 53:28Speaker 3: seen them once. But there's seven to three right now
- 53:31Speaker 3: to begin this season and yet own the youngest team
- 53:34Speaker 3: right now in the NHL on paper. I mean, as
- 53:38Speaker 3: far as what you've seen, how much is the start
- 53:40Speaker 3: reflective of what they can be all season one?
- 53:43Speaker 4: Oh?
- 53:43Speaker 10: For my money, I think the Montreal Canadians might be
- 53:46Speaker 10: the most exciting team in the National Hockey League right now.
- 53:49Speaker 10: And I don't think I'm speaking out of turn by
- 53:51Speaker 10: saying that. You know, just the skill on display, the.
- 53:57Speaker 2: Style that they play, the speed with which they play.
- 54:01Speaker 10: When we were in Montreal, you know, Dave Maloney and
- 54:04Speaker 10: I you know, would have each TV time out look
- 54:07Speaker 10: at one another and say, Wow, these guys play fast.
- 54:11Speaker 5: You know.
- 54:11Speaker 10: I think the biggest question is it has been for
- 54:14Speaker 10: the last couple of years, is you know your ice
- 54:16Speaker 10: love Kowski the evolution in his game.
- 54:18Speaker 2: Can he keep up?
- 54:19Speaker 10: And I think we've started to see he holds his
- 54:22Speaker 10: own from a physicality standpoint better than when he first
- 54:25Speaker 10: got in the league. But man, Cole Callfield's an elite sniper.
- 54:29Speaker 10: Laane Hudson deserving the Callege Trophy last year.
- 54:33Speaker 2: He's skaced like the win.
- 54:34Speaker 10: I mean, it's it's like a Kate mccarr two point
- 54:36Speaker 10: zero uh kind of deal. And then you've got a
- 54:40Speaker 10: couple of guys that you know fit very different roles
- 54:43Speaker 10: and and seem to work well. I mean, you've got
- 54:45Speaker 10: some bulk with arbor Jack guy, if you need to have.
- 54:48Speaker 2: Him in there.
- 54:49Speaker 10: Noah Dobson, who's just been such a sturdy defenseman in
- 54:52Speaker 10: this league the last couple of years. You've got centered depth.
- 54:56Speaker 10: Now I know Alex new Hook is out for a
- 54:58Speaker 10: while with injury, and that's that's gonna be area where
- 55:00Speaker 10: they're going to be tested here. But you know, when
- 55:03Speaker 10: he's healthy, you've got a pretty good lineup up the middle.
- 55:06Speaker 10: And then Sam Montebo, who's you know. I think he
- 55:10Speaker 10: follows in a great line of Quepaquah goaltenders who have
- 55:15Speaker 10: a flair for the dramatic. He plays that way and
- 55:19Speaker 10: loves to entertain.
- 55:20Speaker 3: Yeah, coming up Montreal tomorrow night only visit they have
- 55:23Speaker 3: here into Climbate Pledge Arena at seven thirty and then
- 55:26Speaker 3: the Rangers this Saturday at seven o'clock at Climate Pledgerina.
- 55:30Speaker 3: Alex been too long looking forward to having it back
- 55:33Speaker 3: up in these parts up in the Gondo Love. But
- 55:35Speaker 3: in the meantime, keep up the great worker. I was
- 55:37Speaker 3: welcome back here with us, and they're looking forward to
- 55:39Speaker 3: catching up soon with you.
- 55:40Speaker 2: Thanks again, appreciate you guys, Thanks for having me on.
- 55:44Speaker 3: All right, great stuff. One of our great friends here
- 55:45Speaker 3: in this business, Alex Fast joining us here on Cracking
- 55:48Speaker 3: Weekly now in his first full season behind the play
- 55:51Speaker 3: by play Mike for the New York Rangers as well.
- 55:53Speaker 3: Great insight from him leading us into the week ahead
- 55:56Speaker 3: here for the crack And and Everett got to this earlier.
- 55:58Speaker 3: It's pretty light Montreal coming up tomorrow night, and the
- 56:01Speaker 3: New York Rangers as well coming up on Saturday. And
- 56:04Speaker 3: that's it. We're not gonna have many weeks like this
- 56:07Speaker 3: again much for this entire schedule. So I'll begin with
- 56:11Speaker 3: the Montreal game. And I think to me, after the
- 56:15Speaker 3: krack And lost this one back at Bell Center in overtime,
- 56:19Speaker 3: assuming that he starts, I'd be led to believe that
- 56:22Speaker 3: Joey Decord wants a massive do over. I think here
- 56:25Speaker 3: for this game, and he's like fantastic in the last
- 56:29Speaker 3: two games against Winnipeg and Edmonton. But again, what that
- 56:32Speaker 3: game told us, You can't take late penalties. It led
- 56:36Speaker 3: to the power play goal to tie the game. Can
- 56:38Speaker 3: you contain I've been Demo Dobin, Oh boy, does he
- 56:41Speaker 3: look good right now? And Cole Cawfield And because with
- 56:46Speaker 3: that more pucks flowing through them because Patrick Lyone is
- 56:49Speaker 3: out three to four months with core surgery.
- 56:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean that that game Montreal started on sloppy.
- 56:57Speaker 4: They slowly got it cleaned up in the latter parts
- 57:00Speaker 4: of the first and second period, but it didn't start
- 57:03Speaker 4: on time as ever, likes to say, and I think
- 57:05Speaker 4: that's going to be something that they'll be thinking about
- 57:07Speaker 4: in this game against Montreal. You know I talked about
- 57:11Speaker 4: Seattle being thirteenth oldest team. Well guess who's the youngest
- 57:14Speaker 4: team in the league against Montreal. And so they are
- 57:17Speaker 4: a fast team, they are an agile team. They're a
- 57:20Speaker 4: youthful team, full of energy, and the Cracker are gonna
- 57:24Speaker 4: have to find a way to slow that down. Yeah.
- 57:26Speaker 5: I mean, listen, anytime you have a rematch of the
- 57:28Speaker 5: nineteen seventeen Stanley Cup final between Seattle and Montreal, I
- 57:32Speaker 5: mean it is appointment viewing. No, I listen the Kraken.
- 57:37Speaker 5: I felt that they man Cawfield was so good in
- 57:43Speaker 5: that first game that that should have been a two
- 57:46Speaker 5: point night. But Cawfield was was was on hold my
- 57:50Speaker 5: beer right home opener, emotional home opener. And I've always
- 57:55Speaker 5: contended that I think it's it's a lot easier for
- 57:57Speaker 5: the team that lost in the second game to win
- 58:02Speaker 5: than it is for the team that won, because if
- 58:04Speaker 5: you won, it's easy to go out there and say,
- 58:06Speaker 5: all right, boys, let's running back do it again. But
- 58:09Speaker 5: if you lost, you're making the adjustments, you know, where
- 58:12Speaker 5: you slipped up, you knew where you failed. I think
- 58:14Speaker 5: where the Kraken, you know they They've contained the last
- 58:19Speaker 5: two teams top lines pretty effectively. Even though dry Title
- 58:24Speaker 5: and Ryan Nusan Hopkins did get points in that game
- 58:30Speaker 5: against the Edmonton Oilers, News had an assist and dry
- 58:34Speaker 5: Title had the two assists there, but David off the
- 58:36Speaker 5: score sheet. I still think that you know you can,
- 58:40Speaker 5: you can shut down and a Suzuki a caw Field.
- 58:44Speaker 5: It's not going to be easy. Elaine Hudson. It's not
- 58:46Speaker 5: gonna be easy, but I do think it's really a
- 58:49Speaker 5: rinse and repeat. You know it's not period one of
- 58:53Speaker 5: of the Montreal game. It's really gonna be period seven
- 58:57Speaker 5: of the Winnipeg Edmonton games can continued if they want
- 59:01Speaker 5: to have success going up against Montreal.
- 59:04Speaker 4: The youth of Montreal needs to get matched with some
- 59:07Speaker 4: of the youth on Seattle. I see above Berkeley Cotton,
- 59:10Speaker 4: I mean same age as Demidov, Like, hey, you want
- 59:14Speaker 4: to play in the NHL, go out and you take
- 59:16Speaker 4: this guy off the score sheet, stick with him the
- 59:18Speaker 4: whole game, like match him. So uh, the Cracker are
- 59:22Speaker 4: going to have to use their their limited number of
- 59:25Speaker 4: of of skaters that can stay with some of this
- 59:28Speaker 4: youth on the Montreal team to match them.
- 59:31Speaker 3: Rangers coming up this Saturday, and before I get onto
- 59:34Speaker 3: the festivities, because where we record this year on the
- 59:38Speaker 3: back of my walls, I think one of the slickest
- 59:41Speaker 3: third jerseys I have ever seen in my life, and
- 59:43Speaker 3: they will debut here for this weekend. But for the
- 59:47Speaker 3: on ice matters, the Rangers coming off what was again
- 59:51Speaker 3: a clunker at Calgary five to one loss, and you
- 59:54Speaker 3: have to wonder with Mike Sullivan and the guys they
- 59:58Speaker 3: have top to bottom one their takeoff game gonna be.
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: So this is what really concerns me. I think despite
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: them coming to the end of their road trip into
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: Seattle goal prevention, they have been mainly top notch to
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: the Igor Shasterkin, but he gave up five goals on
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: thirty shots at Calgary, but for the most part this
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: year he's received little run support. They only got one
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: goal in that loss at Calgary, and that only goal
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: came ten seconds after Kevin Ball beat Shasterkin from about
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: roughly fifty feet a moving screen as well, but it
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: was one of the more uglier goals we have seen
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: Shasterkin give up here for his career. So depending on
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: what happens at the end of this Ranger road trip,
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: I think, for me, can you jump on them early
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: in period one and just like you did maybe against Edmonton,
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: but number two find a way to see out of
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: the box for their weapons that they have because they
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: can get their cookies on the power play. Despite them
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: struggling early this season.
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean at the time of us recording this show,
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: you know, they're one four and two in their last
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: eight g or what is that, seven games after starting
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: the year two and one, and you listen to a
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: lot of the pundits and the people around who were
- 1:01:12Speaker 5: talking about the Rangers. You know, they seem a little deflated.
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: They don't have they don't have that typical jump that
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: we're used to seeing. And before they come into Seattle
- 1:01:23Speaker 5: they still have to play Vancouver and Edmonton both, I think,
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: who are a little ticked off by their start, So
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: I mean, you never know what could happen, and I
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: think you can't afford Number one to take the Rangers lightly,
- 1:01:37Speaker 5: you know, and in that regard, but you're right, a
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: lot of those young players and they've got some talent
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: on that team with Mike Sullivan now the coach, there
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: like a lot sets up for you know, you don't
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: want to be the slump buster. You don't want to
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: be the street buster. Right. We've seen in the Crack
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: in the last couple of years, you know, struggle with
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: the likes of Anaheim San Jose when they're coming off
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: of Chicago, right, So Ottawa, you know, I mean, there
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: are teams that you feel that you should beat in
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: the last couple of years, and Seattle's not been able
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: to get it done. So you don't want to fall
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: trap to that. But also too, you see these teams
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: twice a year, and I mean the Eastern Conference. You
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: never know what you're gonna get out East. It's different styles,
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: it's different personnel. Again, you know you're seeing these the
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: Cracket have not seen the Rangers since what February I
- 1:02:30Speaker 5: want to say, early March, so it's been a while.
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: It's been a while since the Crack and have seen
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: the Rangers play, So you know, that's another thing you
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: don't know what to expect. Also, Litt Morgan, he's gonna
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: be fired up coming back to c PA, you know
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: what I mean. And Carson Susy that'll be fun. But
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: but no, I think for the cracking. You know, it's
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: not going to be easy this week. But we talked
- 1:02:53Speaker 5: a little bit about the more manageable parts of the
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: schedule as you get into November, and I think this
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: week two games in the week and you can finally
- 1:03:03Speaker 5: rest and relax and get some energy back. I think
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: these are two games that if you're Seattle, the goal
- 1:03:10Speaker 5: needs to be at minimum three points out of the
- 1:03:13Speaker 5: Canadians and the Rangers.
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I would never sleep on a team that's coached
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: by Mike Sullivan. Oh No, Schustkin is absolutely one of
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: the best goaltenders in the league. He might not be
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: get getting the defense support that he needs right now,
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: but I would not sleep on this team. Panerin Miller,
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: Adam Fox A, Benajat like these guys are our offensive juggernauts.
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: And if you look at any of these games and say, well,
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: this team is on a slide, it's going to be
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: a little easier. Maybe I don't have to commit to
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: the structure as much as I normally would. Against Ay
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: and Edmonton, they're going to catch you sleep and they're
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: going to put a couple up real fast, So I'm
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: not concerned about that. I think that that, you know,
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: Lane Lambert is the same guy whether this team wins
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: or loses, at least from we see. You know, the
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: highs aren't too high and the lows aren't too low.
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: And I think that's just because that's the way he
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: likes to operate. That's the way he likes his guys
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: to operate. So you know, he's not going to treat
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: any team as well. This will be an easy win
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: and his cadence will be off. And I say his,
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: I mean lanes where you know he's a little loose
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: in the dresser. He's going to be the same every
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: game because he wants the guys to prepare the same
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: for every game.
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: Motivational fuel night with Will Borgan back in the House
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: and the Crack, and they're going to have Ryan Lindgren
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: facing his former team or he was a lynch pin
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: on that back end for the first time since he
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: was traded to Colorado also last year. And if Coppocco
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: can find a way to get back and make that
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: is season debut, the stories just right themselves.
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: Sometimes I don't you know, I don't care if he
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: is healthy enough just get him out there and get
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: him a couple of shifts. That's the feeling against the range,
- 1:04:52Speaker 5: rop him and bubble rap firsh.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: How fun would that be?
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: How fun would that be if the crack and are
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: wearing that thing right behind me, that black third jersey.
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: They look sharp. I've been waiting for a long time
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: to see those things in game action.
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: Yeah, we've got a you know, a lot going on
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: around it too, Right, there's there's an intro, there's a
- 1:05:12Speaker 5: special activations in the arena. We've added a ton of
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: blue lights or black lights rather in the building to
- 1:05:20Speaker 5: help make those things pop on the ice and in
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: the stands. So if you're listening to this and you're
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: you're you're trying to decide whether to pull the trigger,
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: bang bang, pull the trigger, grab yourself a jersey, grab
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: yourself a ticket, and we'll see you on Saturday.
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: One thing I can easily say is that Milema mater
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: Azusa Pacific black red and white colors. It's a natural match.
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: It's the lunge and brown of the bowling. You can
- 1:05:51Speaker 5: edit that part out, it's fine. I'm not sure the
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: editors would really like that.
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: Just roasting goes on in this podcast. Am I just
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: stay in there, but it's gonna be a fun one again.
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: Third Jersey gonna be unveiled again coming up this Saturday
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: for game action against the New York Rangers. Before that
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: special time puck drop Tuesday at seven point thirty Kraken
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: Montreal take note. We're also gonna be at Tom's watch Bar.
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: We'll be at Tom's watch Bar for postgame Allan myself
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: come right in across the street, hang out with us.
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: Tom's watch Bar the place to be beginning Tuesday. Let's
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: go for a three Stars of the week right now
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: before we get out of here.
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: Ever, go ahead, So I think my first star, I
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: mean it was a toss up, but I'm just gonna
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: go what the way he has played and what he's
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: my third star. Sorry, we'll go the other way. My
- 1:06:44Speaker 5: third star, the fourth line. I'm going all three. I'm
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: going I'm going Carts, I'm going Benny, and I'm going wins.
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: Like those three guys, especially in the Winnipeg Edmonton games,
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: were just huge for for this team. I think they
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: tilted the ice against Winnipeg and you know Carts' goal
- 1:07:05Speaker 5: that shift against the Oilers. They're my third Star of
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: the week. My my second star of the week is
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: uh Joey the court. He needed those two bounce backs
- 1:07:15Speaker 5: from from Washington. I thought he got it vintage Joey
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: in uh in in Winnipeg and then a really good
- 1:07:25Speaker 5: strong performance against the Oilers. This one's hard for me
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: my my first star of the week, because I think
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: both contributed in in a variety of different ways. But
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: I'm going to go with Jayden Schwartz barely barely over
- 1:07:44Speaker 5: Jordan Everley because of how he played consistently throughout the week.
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: He provided offense. He he he was the best player
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: I felt for Seattle. Uh best skater for the Kraken
- 1:07:58Speaker 5: I thought all week was was Schwartz. So those are
- 1:08:01Speaker 5: my three stars. I got the fourth line at three,
- 1:08:03Speaker 5: I got Joey at two, and I got Schwartz at one.
- 1:08:08Speaker 5: But maybe it's half and then Ebbs of the other
- 1:08:11Speaker 5: half and then they make up one star together. But
- 1:08:14Speaker 5: that's those are my three and a half stars.
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: I'm gonna go Schwartz third star. I love the leadership
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: over the week from him. I love the two goals
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: one assist he had in the Winnipeg game. Just you know,
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: I don't think that game happens the way it does
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: without without Jayden Schwartz. He's my third star for the week.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: Joey Decord is my second star. I love the bounce
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: back from how things didn't go well at the start
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: of week to how they how well they went for
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: him in Winnipeg and obviously in the Edvonton game as well.
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: So he's my second star and I gotta go. Jordan Eberley,
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: the captain of this team, is my first star. His
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: play throughout the weeks ending ending with the winn the
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: win against Edmonton. The thing that pushed him to the
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: first star for me was comment he made after the
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: win versus Edmonton where he said, I still think this
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: team has another level. And I don't know if he's
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: saying that because of the injuries that are happening right now,
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: or if everybody that's on the roster that's healthy right
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: now has more to give, but I love hearing that
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: from the captain.
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: For me, my third star is going to go to
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: Joey Decord, and for many of the reasons that you
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: guys said, but I think to me, it really is
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: a telltale sign of what kind of a competitor you
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: have in a goaltender when he can bounce back after
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: what was a dud against Philadelphia and find a way
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: to do something that no one's done here to the
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: Winnipeg Jets really in about two years and blank them
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: on their own home ice. Then to do what he
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: did as well against Edmonton. He outplayed Stewart Skinner. He
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: was a big, big, big reason why the Kraken led
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: in this game third period and also finished off the
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: Edmonton Oilers.
- 1:09:54Speaker 5: First shutout of the Jets at home for Winnipeg since
- 1:09:59Speaker 5: January of time twenty four. The twenty three twenty four
- 1:10:02Speaker 5: season was the last time the Jets were shut out
- 1:10:06Speaker 5: at home.
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: Incredible, Yeah, awesome.
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: Number two for me, it goes to Maddy Beneer's and
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: I said again in the postgame show on Saturday, where
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: Matty Beneers goes, this team will go as well. Two
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: assists when he faced a ton of ice time against
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: Connor McDavid, and he neutralized McDavid to the point where
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: he looked very very very human. One shot on net,
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: nothing on the score sheet, and got absolutely run over
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: at the face off circle. Matty Beaniers also would to
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: assist in that game, won ten of fourteen faceoffs. Phenomenal
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: work by the guy. We're at number ten. Took another
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: big step and a big reason why the Kraken were
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: in position to win that game. For me, my first
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: start is a very emotional pick Brandon Montour, to be
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: able to pick things right back up after what was
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: an absolutely tough week. Fits you said a best I thought,
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: we really don't know the gravity of what he's felt,
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: and I don't think we ever ever will. But to
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: find the right time to come back and to say
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: I want to do this, but also be willing to
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: speak about his brother for all the world to hear,
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: and then come back in wearing his shirt before the game. Camstrong,
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: our hearts go out to Brandon Montour. He's my pick
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: here for our first start of the week. Fella's gonna
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: wrap it up here.
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: This was awesome.
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: Let's do it again soon, Let's do it tomorrow night.
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: Let's go cracking, cracking coming up tomorrow night again to
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: Montreal Canadians. Seven thirty face off Rangers, coming up on Saturday,
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: seven o'clock, all across your flagship Home of the Kraken.
