- 2:39things as well. Plus, as always, your phone calls and text are

- 2:50five zero zero A want to bring in Joe stevens Now from the Nitro Convention
- 2:54and Visitors Bureau. Joe, good morning, how are you, sir?
- 2:58I am doing that Dave and I am so impressed with your ability to do
- 3:01the beginning of the show without taking a breath. Well you are. You
- 3:07are the true definition of a professional pronuncticator. Yeah, something like that.
- 3:13Fancy as someone once called me, fancy out loud talker. So so there
- 3:15you go. First of all, I want to say, Joe, thank
- 3:20you for allowing me to serve as a judge for the UH for the for
- 3:23the Chili Cookoff last Saturday. You mayor case bolt everyone of the city of
- 3:27Nitro. It was a great time. I think the exact title. If
- 3:30I get this wrong, correct me. The Wagon Wagon Tails of Nitro als
- 3:34Chili Cookoff and beer Fast. Did I get it right? You're in the
- 3:37neighborhood, okay, as long as you had a good time and you were
- 3:40in the neighborhood. As a patter, I was in the neighborhood, I
- 3:44was, But yeah, I had a great opportunity to come down there and
- 3:47to sample the different chilis and helping some of the judges. So thank you
- 3:52for that. All right, So let's talk Veterans Day. You know,
- 3:53no town does more for its veterans to honor them, in my opinion,
- 3:59than the town that was based founded during World War One as a gun powder
- 4:02manufacturing center in Nitro. Two big events happening, Joe, talk about it.
- 4:06Well, we, like you said, we are a city that really
- 4:11respect rescuse me, respects and honors our veterans and the time they served and
- 4:16making sure we have each day in front of us the way we do and
- 4:21we will have. We we annually have two ceremonies. We have a the
- 4:27Nitro Memorial War Memorial Flag Court down on Bank Street, and on Friday tomorrow
- 4:34we will be having our annual celebration ceremony starting at about five o'clock. We
- 4:42bring in a keynote speaker and this year we're having a special honor for one
- 4:46of our local residents. So that is tomorrow and we'll get into detail on
- 4:51that, and then we lower the flags on Friday at the flag Court.
- 4:56Then on Saturday morning we gather again at seven point thirty for a minor flag
- 5:02ceremony. But the larger of the two ceremonies will be tomorrow at five o'clock.
- 5:09And again, as I said, I mean, they're not not to
- 5:12slight any of the other communities, because I know that all the communities really
- 5:15come out for Veterans Day as well. We should some have already had theirs.
- 5:19I know Elver in Putnam County. I think that they had their big
- 5:21celebration last weekend, and hats off to those folks. But again, Nitro
- 5:27is one. I think that just kind of takes it to a whole other
- 5:30level. I want to talk about your keynote speaker, Major Mara Boggs for
- 5:32a moment. I've known her for some time. I've done different events with
- 5:35her over the years. She's really something else Jo. She is one of
- 5:41the special ladies of special people in this community. She steps up whenever things
- 5:46need to be done. She is currently Maria is currently the state director for
- 5:51US Senator Joe Manchin. Also, she is also the mother of the second
- 5:57place Bella Bogs, who came in say in place in the state cross country
- 6:00championship running for Charleston Catholic. So let's put that out in the front and
- 6:06congratulations to Bella. She's a very superb runner. But with that said,
- 6:12her mother, Mara is an Army veteran. She was the first woman to
- 6:16command an engineering airborne unit into combat in the US Army. Her unit was
- 6:21two to five. I mean her unit of twenty two hundred and twenty five
- 6:26soldiers. Rather, they performed eight hundred combat missions, earned the Army's annual
- 6:32award for Best Engineering Group. But most importantly, all two hundred and twenty
- 6:36five soldiers returned home safely. The retired Major Bobs served thirteen years in the
- 6:44eighty second Airborne Division and First calv and received a number of honors and against.
- 6:49She is going to be speaking tomorrow our keynote speaker, and her talk,
- 6:56her speech is going to be on the role of women in the military.
- 7:00Throughout the years, we always stepped forward through what we think of the
- 7:03military being very male dominant, but the role of the women have been very,
- 7:10very important in the Armed services across the board. And I believe Mara
- 7:15will step up and explain just the role of women in the military and we're
- 7:19looking forward to it. And again we're talking with Joe Stevens from the Nitro
- 7:23Convention and Visitors Bureau about there really their two day celebration of veterans that's going
- 7:30to be going on, and you said there's some other special recognitions that are
- 7:32going to be going on as part of the celebrations as well. David,
- 7:36we have a local resident. His name is Robert Bob Denny. He is
- 7:42ninety six years old and he is a World War Two veteran. He served
- 7:46in the Navy. He was a Machinist Mate third class. He served on
- 7:50the USS Marquette, which this was one of those ships that loaded the landing
- 7:59barges when there was invasions on the beach or something and the landing crafts that
- 8:05went into the beach. His ship was the one that was transporting these and
- 8:09he served in the Pacific. He served in the Navy and from nineteen forty
- 8:13four to nineteen forty six. And he was we're going to be honoring him,
- 8:18but he was sharing this story and you just never know where you're going
- 8:22to be when history is being made. And he was explaining to me that
- 8:26they had gone through the Panama Canal and they were headed towards Pearl Harbor,
- 8:33and actually his ship was going to be and they knew this. The ship
- 8:37was going to be involved in the invasion, the eventual invasion of Japan,
- 8:43the homeland of Japan, And as they were traveling through the Pacific Ocean,
- 8:48word came of the dropping of the first and then second atomic bombs and they
- 8:56and the evasion was not then needed. And but he was saying that they
- 9:01were on the ship and they got the word from the captain of the ship
- 9:05that the bombs had been dropped. So again, you never know where you're
- 9:09going to be when history is being made. But he is going to be
- 9:13honored by the State Senate. Senator State Senator Glenn Jeffries will be having a
- 9:18proclamation for mister Denny. Then also we will be presenting him a flag.
- 9:26Mara Boggs will be presenting him a flag that was flown over the US capital
- 9:33and that's being presented on behalf of Senator Joe mansion. But it's just a
- 9:37way to honor a local hero. I mean, mister Denny put his time
- 9:43in and served us well. And I can tell you as time marches on,
- 9:46Joe, and you'll know all well about that, as I do.
- 9:50When I was a kid, there were were two veterans everywhere, including my
- 9:54grandfather, and now sadly because of the march of time. As I said,
- 9:58I mean, this gentleman's ninety six years old, and you wished it
- 10:00you could have sat down and possibly I know I didn't and talk to my
- 10:05grandfather more about it, and that's that's just part of it. So,
- 10:09I mean there's a reason why that I think it was. Tom Brokaw called
- 10:11him the greatest generation because they definitely were. There's so many different ways in
- 10:18the area, not only in Nitro but other areas as well that you can
- 10:20honor veterans. So even if you can't make Nitro go to one of these,
- 10:24go to as many of them as you can. And you heard me
- 10:26tell the story Joe on the show before. You know, my father I
- 10:31did not serve in the military. My father did. He was decorated Vietnam
- 10:35era veteran who actually served in Vietnam and literally gave his life for the country
- 10:39because he died from his exposure to agent orange. And so it's kind of
- 10:46personal, you know, for me, a little bit like it is for
- 10:48a lot of other people. And Dave, you know, I think Charleston
- 10:52has a ceremony on Saturday. Saint Albans had a parade last week. The
- 10:58city of Ripley be having a parade, and they do a fantastic job in
- 11:03Jackson County there with a Veterans Day parade. But you're right, a number
- 11:07of communities throughout West Virginia will be celebrating the veterans. But I would like
- 11:11to remind everybody that the Nitro History and Wars Museum located on twentieth Street in
- 11:20Nitro, Don just all the volunteers over there have done an awesome job and
- 11:26deplicting and bringing back memorabilia on all the wars from World War One, world
- 11:31War Two, any conflict that the US was in. There is memorabilia there.
- 11:35But most importantly, it is now the final resting area place for the
- 11:41Vietnam War Memorial, and we've had a lot of people stop by. You
- 11:46know, quite a few West Virginians died in the Vietnam War and their names
- 11:52are etched in the war memorial. But that is open daily from noon to
- 11:58for every Monday through Friday. So if people coming to the ceremony tomorrow,
- 12:03they can also go over and visit the Wars Museum and maybe see somebody a
- 12:09relative that we have honored in the museum. Joe, It's always a pleasure
- 12:15to talk to you again. Joe Steven's Niger Convention and Visitor Bureau. Information
- 12:18is available on the city's Facebook page. Again, just hit us with the
- 12:20times of the two events. Again, Okay, Friday, the event will
- 12:26get underway, and I've gotten a weather report from the one and only Spencer
- 12:30Akins WWKTV, and he says the rain will be out of the area between
- 12:33two and three, so we will be good for the five o'clock ceremony right
- 12:37there at twentieth and Mank Street at the flag court that we have on First
- 12:43Avenue there and then that's at five o'clock. And then Saturday morning we'll have
- 12:48a minor celebration with the flags at seven point thirty. David, all right,
- 12:52and again all the information is available on the city's Facebook page. Joe,
- 12:54it's always a pleasure to talk to you. My friend will talk soon.
- 12:58You'd be safe, my friend Stevens Again. Nitro Convention and Visitors Bureau.

- 16:08show, Charles mayor Amy Goodwin is going to stop by for the second time
- 16:12this week. We got big news to get to which a big story breaking
- 16:15late last night that Man and Meal and Charleston will no longer be doing food
- 16:19distributions. Their food trucks are still out and about, but not at the
- 16:23church on Courrier Street, and we're going to talk to the mayor about that.
- 16:27Also, she's going to be talking about this Caski project as well,
- 16:30the former Seiers location. A big, big happenings there. There's always big
- 16:36happenings when this guy's here. Fred Pursinger, the voice of high school sports
- 16:38in West Virginia. How are you? I'm well, sir, how are
- 16:41you? I am doing fine? Loaded up show today, But there's always
- 16:44time for sir Frederick. Well, you know anything I can do to help
- 16:48you out, David, I'm here for you. I appreciate that. High
- 16:52school football playoffs. It is time. It is time once again quick plug
- 16:56for the two games we have this weekend. Tomorrow night to Chris, Jarrett
- 16:59and Matt we'll be a hurricane for the Redskins in Parkersburg and then Saturday afternoon
- 17:04it's East Fairmont As they'll be taking on the Herbert Hoover Huskies. Both fred
- 17:08should be good games. Oh, I think they will be good. You
- 17:11know, I'm you keep looking at the Herbert Hoover Last year they finished certainly
- 17:15as the number nine seed, just like this year, and they made it
- 17:18all the weight of wheeling and talk with Joey Fields on our High School Sports
- 17:22Line show last night, and he says, hey, if this is the
- 17:26way you have to do it, let's do it. So they also lost
- 17:27their first two games last year. They lost the first two games this year,
- 17:32so we'll see. But East Fairmont has an outstanding football team led by
- 17:36IRV Krik Shanks who is the quarterback, Don Fantasia as or running back.
- 17:40So Joey Fields knows he'll have his hands full. Yeah, it should be
- 17:44a couple of great contests. And again we have coverage tomorrow night and also
- 17:48on Saturday afternoon of that second and we'll talk about some of the other areas
- 17:52teams in the playoffs. Fred Winfield faces Lewis County Friday night DOUBLEA. You
- 17:57got Nitro playing host Scott Saturday afternoon. That's Scott Skyhawks team. Man,
- 18:02they just absolutely had been killing it this season. Then we got tripa a
- 18:06Friday night Cable Midland The Muscleman also Friday night gw and Bridgeport and Huntington facing
- 18:11Morgantown. Some really good games on tap Rid always are well. You get
- 18:14to the field of sixteen in each class and every game really should be good.
- 18:18I mean, you know you're getting the sixteen best teams. At least
- 18:21the sixteen best teams have played the best during the regular season. And you
- 18:25know you mentioned the Scott game and Nitro. Scott was rolling along, like
- 18:30you said, undefeated until last week, and then last week they met Nitro
- 18:33at Nitro and Natro beat them. So it's a week of an upset.
- 18:37Was that in your opinion or was it an upset at all? It was
- 18:40an upset, no doubt, undefeated team and really Matt Fry, the quarterback
- 18:44for Scott, had just been doing everything perfectly. But we knew that Nitro
- 18:48they got quite a few additional players through through the transfer portal or whatever you
- 18:52want to call that thing. So Nitro has been good, no doubt,
- 18:56and good for them, but I think Scott got the wake up call they
- 19:00needed. That'll be a heck of a ballgame, that one. You flip
- 19:03a coin, because you know they just met last week. Their meeting again
- 19:07this week in Nightro. Figures they stole one at Nightro. Now they got
- 19:11to go to Scott, so we'll see what happened. And it's always an
- 19:15interesting phenomenon that did you have that really football is really the only one that
- 19:21really has that where you meet a team on Friday night and you turn right
- 19:23around to play the next Friday or Saturday. Yeah, we have six six
- 19:27six games where they met during the regular season, the two teams, but
- 19:30this one is certainly the closest. And that was just a week ago.
- 19:33Yeah, exactly. And at this point, Fred, as a coach,
- 19:37you're I guess you're looking at your players and you're saying, it doesn't matter
- 19:42that you won all those games in the regular season or you knocked off your
- 19:45crosstown or cross country rivals, because it's a brand new season. Everyone pretty
- 19:51much, Fred starts at zero and zero right now, no doubt ed.
- 19:53But you know every week a coach will tell you, well, that's just
- 19:56one game on the schedule, that's our next game. But time that's that's
- 20:00a fact. It's the next game because if you lose this one, your
- 20:03season is over. So it is a very very important game. And just
- 20:07because you know you're the top seed or a higher seed doesn't mean you're gonna
- 20:11win. That's for sorrying. Yeah, what are some of the other games
- 20:14outsider area that you're looking at? I think really we got a real good
- 20:17game going on over in the Eastern Panhandle tomorrow night, and that's going to
- 20:21be Spring Valley at spring Mills. Spring Valley started the season oh to four
- 20:26and they have not lost since then. They've won six in a row.
- 20:29They're six and four. Going to spring Mills or yeah, spring Mills,
- 20:33I said, I think I did that right. Okay, spring Mills eating
- 20:36to spring Mills. And the Cardinals are very very good this year, the
- 20:38number seven seed. They lost twice during the race of season, one of
- 20:41those to Martinsburg. I think that's going to be a really, really good
- 20:45When Wheeling Park is playing maybe some of the best football in the state,
- 20:48they go to Jefferson, so that's a long trip. I think George Washington
- 20:52and Bridgeport g W goes to Bridgeport, Bridgeport at Wayne Jamison Field. They're
- 20:57always always good. But the being that GW put on Beckley the last game
- 21:03of the regular season proves they can score some points. And Aid Fenwick is
- 21:07as good a quarterback as there is in the state. So I think that
- 21:10will be a good one as well. Man, it's exciting, it's a
- 21:11love time. It's a great time. The countdown to Wheeling is on.
- 21:14It's on the Road to the Super Six is on, all right, and
- 21:17after the games, of course, just like during the regular season, you
- 21:19and Dave Jacqueline, the cast of thousands will have Metro News game night,
- 21:22we will indeed, there's three more game nights and we start a new show
- 21:26coming up Sunday night. It's a show that we've been doing for the last
- 21:29three years. On Sunday Night. We take the last hour of the sports
- 21:33line from eight or from seven until eight, called the Road to the Super
- 21:37Six, and we'll review what happened and take a look at what will happen
- 21:40the next week, because we'll have all the pairings by Sunday night. And
- 21:42of course in the middle of all this, we've got college football this weekend
- 21:47too, with both the West Virginia Marshall, I know you'll be part of
- 21:49the Mountaineer coverage as well. Mountaineer's at Oklahoma, and you know Oklahoma the
- 21:56last year of West Virginia welcomed to Oklahoma to Michael push Card Stadium suitors.
- 22:00Siters have lost two in a row, but West Virginia will have to bring
- 22:03their eight plus game and Marshall. Marshall just needs to win. I mean
- 22:07they need to win bad. I know there are last time I look like
- 22:10a three point favorite, but this is no pushover game tomorrow and or Saturday
- 22:15night. So well, and this is the seventy five games, which it
- 22:18means a lot, and it does. I mean, you kind of wrap
- 22:21it up, but I tell you, I don't want to spend I don't
- 22:22want to talk high school or college football that much. But I will say
- 22:26this as a thundering herd guy, somebody spends a lot of time in Huntington.
- 22:30It's been extremely difficult last couple of weeks. Five in a row,
- 22:33now five in a row. Yeah, and third it out, oh four
- 22:37and oh and with the you know, the way we played against Virginia Tech
- 22:41and with the victory, and of course going back to last season with Notre
- 22:44Dame. I don't there's a lot of questions coming out of coming out of
- 22:47the Jewel City right now, no doubt. And I think it starts at
- 22:49the quarterback. Is Fancellor the guy? I don't know. I think Pennington's
- 22:53a little too young still yet prove that. He proved it. So you

- 23:41in the show Tom mentor now for Chick fil A. Tom, Good morning,
- 23:44How are you morning, Dave? How are you sir? I'm doing
- 23:47well well, you know, and for somebody that just got out of the
- 23:48dental chair, you sound pretty good. Yeah, yeah, they didn't no
- 23:52numming, no number. That was a yeah, that would have been kind
- 23:56of messy trying to talk on the radio, for sure. I said that
- 24:00ear at the top of the show. I said, we hope to have
- 24:02Tom mentor or not. I didn't explain to the folks why you were actually
- 24:03in the dental chair this morning. You said, I hope to be done
- 24:07by round nine twenty nine thirty. I'm glad it was able to work out
- 24:10all right. So I had you on a couple of weeks ago to talk
- 24:11about temporary closing to the South Ridge location of a Chick fil A for the
- 24:17remodeling. Happy to report you guys are back. We're back. We're open.
- 24:21We're open six thirty then nine thirty Monday, two Thursday, and six
- 24:25thirty to ten on Friday and Saturday seven breakfast catering. You got it.
- 24:30We're wide open, ready to roll. What will people see differently Tom when
- 24:33they come in. That's a great question. What we did our drive through
- 24:37We have the drive through door like we have at the corkorle Avenue, so
- 24:42that's one thing. And then our dining room. We don't have a playground
- 24:48lookout, so that you'll probably be getting some comments on that one on your
- 24:51Facebook page or I will be one of us for both the no playgrounds and
- 24:56then we just have our seating. It's more open, all new tile.
- 25:00I mean, they we had as a major project because as they had to
- 25:04run some drains and run some different you know, do a lot of they
- 25:08they had to dig up the part of the foundation to be able to do
- 25:11all this stuff. So it's crazy. But yeah, we're go ahead.
- 25:15No, no, don't go ahead. And I was I was just taking
- 25:17a breath. Go ahead, got it? Okay, I'll say yes,
- 25:19And so uh, this we'll have. We're getting new dining furniture as well.
- 25:25So it's just a lot of new things. It's basically as a face
- 25:27list. I mean it was really it was all in on the inside.
- 25:30When you come in, you will you'll know it's Chick fil A, but
- 25:33you're not going to recognize it as the old tick fil A that you used
- 25:36to come to. And Tom, when you were on the show to me
- 25:37a couple of weeks ago, you said it had been how long has there
- 25:40been any kind of major remodeling there? Any kind of remodeling. They have
- 25:44been about five years okay, So, which which is kind of a lifetime
- 25:48in the world of what you do those type of establishments, because I mean
- 25:51you're constantly nationwide, whether it's you or one of the other ones. I
- 25:53mean, you're constantly coming out with new things. And I know how because
- 25:56I got friends that that that that are like you, that that known those
- 26:00places, and they're kind of like, go out. You know, corporate
- 26:02office is always saying we need to do this, and we need to do
- 26:03that. I want to talk about the scheduling a little bit before we let
- 26:07you go. How did the scheduling work out for you guys, because sometimes
- 26:10you can set a goal with these types of projects and they'll finish right on
- 26:12time, and then sometimes they're ahead of scheduling. Sometimes they're they're way behind.
- 26:18Where was this one, Tom? It was right on schedule and now
- 26:22originally told us two weeks and then I got a phone call halfway through the
- 26:25project and they said, hey, I'm we messed up in telling you the
- 26:27scope. The scope of this work will take three weeks. So so it
- 26:32was right on time. You know, we had planned for two weeks.
- 26:34And one question I was asked multiple times last time, which I thought we
- 26:37talked about, but I guess I wasn't clear enough. Is what do we
- 26:41do as a people who worked at south Ridge? Just to make sure everybody
- 26:44knows, nobody got laid off. Everybody came to work in a corcal some
- 26:48of them took a little bit of vacation time, but nobody got laid off.
- 26:49Everybody got paid, everybody still had a job. We didn't just there's
- 26:55basically too bad on you, especially right before Christmas. I mean, you
- 26:57know, we want to be a carrying We do our best to make sure
- 27:00we take care of our team members. So I was asked that multiple times.
- 27:07So I want to make sure we're really clear that everybody who's taken care
- 27:10of, everybody can have Christmas. Yes, absolutely, Hey, Tom,
- 27:12I appreciate you rolling out of that dentist chair without numbing this morning to come
- 27:17on the show to tell us about the upgrades and the remodeling. It's all
- 27:21over. You're done now, you're ready to see the people as we head
- 27:23into what I would think would be one of the busiest times a year.
- 27:26Fore you folks out there at south Ridge. Yes, yes, it's a
- 27:29very busy, very busy season, our catering season really ramps up everybody for
- 27:34all the Christmas parties, Thanksgiving parties, office parties, our catering really rams
- 27:38up. And so as I say that, they we're looking for more great
- 27:44team members. And one of the things that people will ask us all the
- 27:47time, you know, is what do we offer? You know? So
- 27:48we offer full benefits, We offer four one K profit sharing pension and for
- 27:52a quick service restent. You don't hear that? So yeah, Okay,
- 27:56where do people if they're interested in applying for a job at Chick fil A,
- 28:00how do they do that? What's the process? It's really easy.
- 28:03Just go to KVCFA dot com. It's for Canall Valley Chick fil A dot
- 28:07com, butt KVCFA dot com. Go there and you can pick your store
- 28:12and go apply where you ever you want to apply. And that's one of
- 28:15the great things I would think about being in this location because there are a
- 28:18few that you said, you're allowed to pick your store before we let you
- 28:21guys, do want to do one thing? Give you a chance to plug
- 28:23that catering because this is the time, as you said, with holiday parties
- 28:26and summer in office and summer at private locations. How does that process work.
- 28:30How do people get on the schedule to have their events cater by Chick
- 28:33fil A. That's a great question. It's actually a very simple process.
- 28:37You can you can always call in our number three oh four, two O
- 28:41five fifty eight twenty nine, or just go to kbcfa dot com. And
- 28:45the one thing about it is a lot of times you get out of Hey,
- 28:48y'all do kating for breakfast? Yeah, we cater breakfast, lunch,
- 28:51and dinner. We do box mills. We have nugget trades, chicken chip
- 28:53trades, and one of my all time favorites that people don't know about is
- 28:57we have the mac and cheese trade. And there is nothing better. If
- 29:00you want to take something that will be game changing to Thanksgiving dinner, bring
- 29:06some mac and cheese and some galls of sweet tea and lemonade and you'll be
- 29:08the MVP of your Thanksgiving dinner. Well, I'll tell you people heard me
- 29:11talk about this. I was at the mac and Cheese cookoff this past weekend
- 29:17at Capital Market. I judged thirty two different kinds of mac and cheese.
- 29:21I'm good on the mac and cheese for just a little while myself personally,
- 29:23okay, give me till next week and I'll be good to go. Okay,
- 29:27all right, Tom, I appreciate you being on the show Man.
- 29:30Thanks a lot. We'll talk soon, please, Thanks Dave, thank you
- 29:33for having me on. Yeah. Absolutely, Tom mentored again from Chick fil

- 33:06Goodwin back with us again. How are you? Good morning? This is
- 33:08great? What are you doing tomorrow? I'll be here, No, actually
- 33:12tomorrow. It is like fun Friday, right, yeah, Friday Fun.
- 33:15Morgan Morrison is gonna be my guest host City Okay, yeah, I'd pick
- 33:19her. Yeah, Morgan Morrison will be on the show tomorrow. Actually,
- 33:22I texted her earlier in the week. I have a new sweatshirt that I
- 33:25purchased for the holiday season, and it says holly Jolly mm hmmm for the
- 33:30Holly Jolly Brawley event that's coming up. I know Friday I spent a lot
- 33:35of time talking about that. I know that I'm friends with her on her
- 33:37social media and I saw that she's been posting a lot about that's kind of
- 33:39one of her one of her pet projects. Yeah, it's gonna be really
- 33:42great. It's gonna be really great. May we got a lot to uncover
- 33:45this morning. Thank you again. Well, I had you on earlier this
- 33:46week, so we get to double the amy for the price of one for
- 33:50the for the amount of money we pay you to come in here. I'm
- 33:52kidding. Don't get that started. I'm just kidding. Absolutely no, no,
- 33:55no, no, no, she doesn't even get a T shirt.
- 33:59I want to talk about, seriously about the announcement you have today about the
- 34:01Caski property, and we'll get to that. But first news broke last night
- 34:07that Man and Meal, which operates right across the street from US, would
- 34:09be ceasing operations at least temporarily as far as a food distribution site. From
- 34:14that location, their food trucks will continue to operate around the city and I'll
- 34:19have more on that coming up a little bit later. Now, this all
- 34:21comes on the heels of numerous issues. There any comment from your office on
- 34:24that, Well, I'll just I'll say this because I think this is the
- 34:28most important thing we have had since the time I've been here, and I
- 34:31know in the past two a great relationship with Man and Meal. The best
- 34:37thing about Man and Mel right now is probably something that most people don't know.
- 34:39The best thing they have going for them is a board president Chuck Hamshire
- 34:45actually who owns Purple Moon down here. Chuck's been on the show before him.
- 34:47He is probably the most incredible community person that I know. But you
- 34:52know, it's a good organization. I believe great board members and they know.
- 34:58To have a successful organization, just as we all do, you have
- 35:01to be flexible. You have to change systems or structures when necessary. And
- 35:06you know, after long conversations with lots of folks. By the way,
- 35:09Man and Meal, Sacred Heart, the principal Parents, the episcopal dioceses,
- 35:15the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Virginia, we're included in those conversation
- 35:22they're looking to restructure. As a matter of fact, I saw the announcement
- 35:27they made when I think everybody else saw it last night of different locations that
- 35:30they're going but you know, to go to go backwards. We have been
- 35:34working with them and to try to get them a mobile food truck and actually
- 35:37we're successful in doing that and securing our funds for Man and Meal to do
- 35:42that because you know, taking a page from our care team, we know
- 35:46this. We know service is best provided when it's done outreach. You know,
- 35:51having it's it's it sounds like it might work. Hey, everybody,
- 35:55come here. I am a big believer in if you want to if you
- 35:59want to help people and you want to serve people with whatever need that is,
- 36:01Dave, you got to go to them. That is the best way.
- 36:05It's why actually I went door to door. If you want to talk
- 36:07to people and work with people, you've got to meet face to face.
- 36:09We learned that over the past couple of years. And you know, quite
- 36:13frankly, I'll remind folks that during that COVID time that we had, we
- 36:19worked hand in glove with the operations of Man and meal that they didn't serve
- 36:22out of their facility, they you know, had to go out and troubleshoot
- 36:25and so you know the evolution of that. I think that you know,
- 36:30while I wasn't involved in the executive board meeting, I wasn't involved in their
- 36:32decisions. I do agree with their decision. I think it's a good decision.
- 36:37And you have to look at your structure and say, Okay, what's
- 36:38working, what's not working, and how do we do what we do best,
- 36:44which is feed people. Okay, great, that will always be Man
- 36:46and Maal's mission. You know, there was some you know, I tried
- 36:49not to get on social media because most of it is, you know,
- 36:52ninety percent incorrect information. What there what you know, rumors, Oh,
- 36:57they're shutting them down, the city shutting them down. No, no,
- 37:00that's not happening. State that for the record right now. It's Man and
- 37:04Meal is not you know, unless that's Manamal's decision to stop serving food to
- 37:07folks in our community. That's their mission and by the way, they do
- 37:12a good job. And so meals aren't going to stop. Services aren't going
- 37:15to stop. As a matter of fact, our care team is already trying
- 37:17to troubleshoot, Hey, how may how may we be helpful in this process.
- 37:22But rumors that people have out there of the city or the church or
- 37:27folks shutting folks down is simply not true. You know what good leadership looks
- 37:30like. It looks like Chuck and the board saying, hey, we may
- 37:34need to fix some things. Let's work together with the city, Let's work
- 37:36together with the diocees, let's work together with the school that's right across the
- 37:39street, and let's come up with good solutions. That is what people pay
- 37:45us to do, is to produce good results and to provide good leadership,
- 37:50not get upset about things, not to start rumors, but to work together
- 37:53to say, we've got some challenges, let's fix them. But most important,
- 37:58let's feed people in need. And maybe we need to retweak that,
- 38:01but that's that's still the goal of Man and Meal, and by the way,
- 38:04they have the city's support in doing that. For sure, We're going
- 38:07to spend some a little extra time talking about this a little bit later because
- 38:10I just got some information that we've got some news crews that are gonna be
- 38:14coming here today. I mean, at least I took a shower today.
- 38:16You know the hair look, hair and makeup look. Okay, it always,
- 38:21always, always, it's almost paid for. You got it, all
- 38:23right, So let's talk about we'll get back to mana Mie say sick,
- 38:27you look sick meaning good not bad. Okay, it's a thing kids saying,
- 38:30okay, all right, all right, Well I understand that we have
- 38:32news crews on their way here, so we'll have to we'll go back to
- 38:36the man and meal thing. We've got to basically recreate it, all right.
- 38:38So let's talk about this Caskey announcement that came out yesterday. It was
- 38:43announced that the Municipal Planning Commission has approved sixty five million dollars for a development
- 38:49of the Caskie property. Now that's a former Seiers location. Some people refer
- 38:52to it as that it's going to be a four story, one hundred and
- 38:54twenty thousand square foot building that will hold up to five hundred employees, loading
- 38:59dock eighteen thousand square foot and acts no word yet on who will exactly be
- 39:05in that building. I'm presuming you still can't give the dates. How's that
- 39:08the dates? As the kids say, they say that on the yeah,
- 39:13I don't know why kids are stupid, all right, so you can't tell
- 39:15this kid on who's covin ind they you know, we have been working on
- 39:20this project for you know, close to two years, and so it's so
- 39:23nice to see, you know, a large project like this come to fruition
- 39:27and you know, you just gave the stats one hundred and twenty thousand square
- 39:30feet and sixty five million. You know, what I want to mention is
- 39:34that Remington who has this project right now, this is their very first project.
- 39:39Let's talk about Remington. Remington is a Yeah, they're the company that
- 39:43is managing this property, that is working with the architects on the ground to
- 39:46build this building. This is their very first project in the United States.
- 39:52So that that is that is worth noting. But what's most important is,
- 39:54you know, on the heels of the worldly announcement earlier, Yes, unanimous
- 40:00by the way, the Municipal Planning Commission and unanimous. There's no other action
- 40:05that needs to take place from the city for this to happen, this incredible
- 40:09project to happen. But we're talking about again hundreds of jobs downtown Charleston,
- 40:16and that's important. Dave, just like Whirley folks said, well, it's
- 40:20only fifty new jobs. No, it's every job that we get to secure
- 40:24in the city of Charleston is good for the city of Charleston. It's not
- 40:28good for necessarily Amy good when it's good for our small business owners. It's
- 40:30good for our pharmacies, it's good for our restaurants. As a matter of
- 40:35fact, one of the restauranturs downtown said to me, oh, I can't
- 40:37wait till Whirley moves in. I want to give them free free lunch certificate
- 40:42so they know how close I am that I do grab and goes or I
- 40:45do catering orders. So this is about building up and it goes in line
- 40:50with what we have been trying to do in that part of the city for
- 40:52quite some time. This is going to work so beautifully with you know,
- 40:57the new hotel that's coming in that development, what we've done with the management
- 41:02of the coliseum in Convention Center, with the Sports Center, which is absolutely
- 41:08going to be great. We're looking at ways to how do we improve the
- 41:12municipal Auditorium. You know, that's something that we have been talking about for
- 41:16years now, actually decades now. But how do we make that part of
- 41:22town what it needs to be. Oh, by the way, when you're
- 41:25traveling in from the city of Charleston, if you're a visitor, if you're
- 41:29coming in for a concert, that's the gateway. And so this new building
- 41:31that you're going to see. And by the way, it's a beautiful building.
- 41:35When you're coming down Virginia Street, you know, right now you see
- 41:38in a parking lot, you're not going to see that. Now you're going
- 41:42to see brand new hotels. Of course, PoCA Valley Blank and Linda Ashley
- 41:45have that great property right beside Municipal Auditorium, which is going to be developed
- 41:50in this new site. It's going to change the look of that area.
- 41:53And yes, that's important, but what's most important we're going to have folks
- 41:58working down town Charleston. And the other thing. Then I'll note Dave that
- 42:01you know, with Worley and the conversations we're having there and with this announcement
- 42:06is what we always work on behind the scenes, which is downtown house housing
- 42:12in general. Okay, it's a problem in Putnam County, it's problem Kenon
- 42:15County, it's a problem in Cabo County, but especially a lot of these
- 42:19workers want downtown housing. People want to walk to class, they want to
- 42:23walk to work, they want to walk to go get their lunch, and
- 42:29so building a vibrant and robust downtown is always it's an our tenure plan,
- 42:36of course that we're revising right now, but it's every mayor's focus is how
- 42:40do you make a vibrant and robust downtown. And then you know, obviously
- 42:45work with the communities that attached to this great thirty three square mile city that
- 42:52we love, and we're talking with the Charleston Mary Amy Goodwin. The show
- 42:55is brought to part by Huston's Pizza. This month at your local Hustand's get
- 42:59a lar Jtnage Pepperoni pizza and ten cheese sticks only twenty one ninety nine.
- 43:02Visit husbands Pizza dot com for details. Getting back to this project, we
- 43:07have any idea of a timeframe. Yeah, they started talking about it yesterday,
- 43:12you know, twenty twenty five, the fall of twenty twenty five.
- 43:15It's going to be fast. Adam Crason, who is with EMM, who
- 43:20works with Remington, who's been kind of the man on the ground, and
- 43:22Jim Polly were there yesterday and what they both said was in the first,
- 43:30I want to say, you said March, you're going to see that building
- 43:32come down, because that whole Caskey building is going to come down to the
- 43:37ground. So there's you know, the thing that any mayor in any city
- 43:40likes to see, or cranes in the city and development. So you'll see
- 43:45in that first first part of next year that building come down and then you'll
- 43:50start to see that development happen. If you saw some of the photos that
- 43:54were posted on it, it's really great. I will note this because this
- 43:59was actually brought up by two folks on the Planning Commission. Dave and I
- 44:02actually brought it up when this project was first proposed to me a while back.
- 44:07I said, oh, I hate a parking lot on the river.
- 44:10I hate that. I don't like parking garages and lots on the river.
- 44:15However, the way that they have this designed with greenery and green space on
- 44:22the opposite side. And again, if you've ever been down Virginia Street,
- 44:27most of your listeners have that is the gateway. That is what most people
- 44:30see. Yes, you know canan boulevard. You got about eighty two eighty
- 44:35three hundred cars that go back and forth. But when you're coming to the
- 44:37City of Charleston. So it's a parking lot on either side. Right,
- 44:42it's about one hundred and twenty five spaces. The way they have it laid
- 44:45out, I am my concerns were subsided, as were some of the commissioners
- 44:52yesterday who were asking questions about this project, about the design. So it's
- 44:58actually going to be reversed, that's right. It's actually going to be facing
- 45:01Canal Boulevard. That's right, it's going to be facing Kanal. Yeah,
- 45:05it's going to be well, the building on be on the Virginia Street side
- 45:07and the employee parking and but the way, you know, Dan Varent,
- 45:14who is our director of Planning here in the City of Charleston and has been
- 45:16for Goshi Whiz twenty five years, said yesterday, thank you for bringing this
- 45:23project in the state that it's in. It's one of the best design projects
- 45:28that we have had. And you know, there's always some tweaking to do,
- 45:32right, you got to make sure this sidewalk, this curb cut,
- 45:37and we might sure the fire department knows what entrance and extra you know,
- 45:39those little picky things that are necessary. But it came to the Planning commission
- 45:45in exceptional exceptional form. I will note that the several Planning Commission members,
- 45:53I think, including Council Member Sean Taylor, kind of went yay when they
- 45:58heard that the power line you know, some of those which are the only
- 46:00ones out there, are going to be buried and which is going to make
- 46:05a huge difference because it's one of the big complaints that we get on that
- 46:08block or all of the exposed power lines, so that will be power lines
- 46:14will be buried in that area. So when I say that that, you
- 46:16know, we talk about City Center at slack Plas all the time, Dave,
- 46:20we talk about different areas of the city that are seeing this type of
- 46:22development. This is where a lot of investment is going in. Hundreds of
- 46:27millions of dollars are going to go into this area in the city of Charleston,
- 46:31and there's going to be some more that's going to be done in that
- 46:36area as well. All right, well, I know you got a lot
- 46:38to get to today, so we'll go ahead and cut you loose and let
- 46:42you let you get out of here. When can we I know, crystal
- 46:45Ball, But we'll close with this. When do you anticipate that there could
- 46:51be an announcement as to what it's going to be. Yeah, and I
- 46:53apologize about that, but you know what, when you're good partners with company
- 46:57law, I get it. Yeah. Yeah, and I think it's all
- 47:00over. It's kind of the worst kept secret and it has been for a
- 47:01long period of It doesn't take long on social media for speculation. But that's
- 47:06my job, right. My job is to make sure that we uphold the
- 47:08agreements that we have with folks because it's it's it's it's a business, and
- 47:14we want to make sure that we're protecting their annemy as well. But I
- 47:17would I would imagine sooner rather than later. If most folks probably know this
- 47:22already, but that was my commitment to the company and working with them.
- 47:27But it is a very large energy company and we are more than excited to
- 47:31welcome them to downtown Charleston. All right, Mayor, I appreciate. I
- 47:37promise you won't be on the show tomorrow. I promise you, Morgan Well

- 51:23where we are right now. And I can tell you, and I posted
- 51:27this last night on social media as someone who works out of this building at
- 51:30eleven eleven Virginia Street East, something had to be done. I mean as
- 51:36far as having what was going on across the street. This is me,
- 51:39I'm not speaking on behalf of the company. That's just Dave talking what was
- 51:43going on across the street with the problems that we have in our parking lot
- 51:45here. We had nothing to do with the decision, by the way,
- 51:47what was going on at the two schools that are within walking distance of that
- 51:52facility. You the violence, and I mean actual violence that went on across
- 51:57there. You had somebody that did it being killed. Something had to be
- 52:00done, it had, it had to be done. Services are still being
- 52:04offered. They're just going in an outreach type situation right now. But at
- 52:07least tip rarely it's been closed down across the street out of the church on
- 52:12Coryer Street. All right, we gotta go. Thank you so much,
