- 0:20Tad Eggleston: Oh, try that again, Tyler.
- 0:23Tad Eggleston: Though, those thwips were… were weak.
- 0:26Tyler Johnson: Weak!
- 0:27Tyler Johnson: Alright, and across the interweb from me…
- 0:29Phil: with…
- 0:30Tyler Johnson: Now, across the interweb, There you go.
- 0:35Tyler Johnson: I have to push the noise really hard, because I think my beard blocks my AirPods.
- 0:42Tad Eggleston: And so…
- 0:44Phil: Blaming it on the beer.
- 0:46Tyler Johnson: On my end, they were… they were decent, you know.
- 0:48Tad Eggleston: I'm good.
- 0:49Tyler Johnson: Hi guys, how are you?
- 0:51Tad Eggleston: Pretty good, it's good to have you back for a day, and hopefully for a couple more, because we got a…
- 0:57Tad Eggleston: We're gonna…
- 0:58Phil: Let's bring you back into this.
- 0:59Tad Eggleston: Black Hammer and a Monstrous episode, and then we got year-end stuff, and I know you wanted to come back for that, so, like…
- 1:06Tyler Johnson: Yeah, the year-end stuff will be really cool. I feel like, for sure…
- 1:10Tad Eggleston: I feel like you should be coming back pretty much for the rest of the year now, because we've got Black Hammer, Monstrous, and then 3…
- 1:19Tad Eggleston: year-end episodes, so I'm just tossing that out there, Tyler. We can schedule around you.
- 1:26Tad Eggleston: We'll have to see.
- 1:26Tyler Johnson: Saturdays… Saturdays are pretty tough because of our work schedule.
- 1:30Tad Eggleston: Well, it's Sunday morning right now. We can…
- 1:33Tyler Johnson: It is Sunday.
- 1:35Tad Eggleston: Long enough to… Again, we can schedule around you.
- 1:39Tyler Johnson: Yes, that sounds good.
- 1:40Tad Eggleston: Even though there's a good chance I'll be working at Comic Shop Sundays.
- 1:44Tyler Johnson: Oh, you're gonna do… we're not open Sundays, so that's good.
- 1:47Tad Eggleston: Huh?
- 1:47Tyler Johnson: but…
- 1:49Tad Eggleston: we're kind of test ballooning the Sunday by having me go in and do it.
- 1:54Tad Eggleston: So…
- 1:56Tyler Johnson: We're doing it today because of a Santa Claus in town kind of thing.
- 2:00Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 2:01Tyler Johnson: So we will be open today.
- 2:04Tyler Johnson: Normally, we are kicking Sundays off.
- 2:07Tad Eggleston: So, episode 212?
- 2:11Tad Eggleston: I've been doing a better job of actually saying that.
- 2:15Phil: I sometimes forget.
- 2:17Phil: You know, you know what, we definitely need to do a better job of is mentioning the Patreon.
- 2:22Tad Eggleston: Oh, well, yeah, yeah, if you want to give us a few bucks on Patreon, we will totally take it.
- 2:29Phil: Goes to a, if, if we.
- 2:31Tad Eggleston: And Tyler, are you posting on Instagram while you're talking to us?
- 2:35Phil: At this moment?
- 2:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 2:37Tad Eggleston: I just got an alert for a Nexus Vault Instagram post.
- 2:43Tyler Johnson: No, my partner handles our social media.
- 2:46Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay, okay. So he's supposed to manage… I mean.
- 2:51Tyler Johnson: Don't play.
- 2:51Tad Eggleston: You'd be allowed to post on immigrant… Instagram while you were talking.
- 2:54Tyler Johnson: Not me at the moment, but no, that's… that's our partner.
- 2:58Tad Eggleston: Your Instagram needs to be liking us more often. We like you.
- 3:02Tyler Johnson: I will, get on that.
- 3:05Phil: I'm a realization right now.
- 3:07Tyler Johnson: Cause that's not me, I… I… it is not me, I'm sorry about that.
- 3:11Tad Eggleston: I'm just messing with you.
- 3:12Phil: Tyler, why don't you like us? Why don't you like us on Instagram, even?
- 3:15Tad Eggleston: I'm just missing…
- 3:16Tyler Johnson: Hold on, hold on, I will go… I don't… can we have two people in an Instagram account at the same time?
- 3:22Tad Eggleston: I don't know.
- 3:24Tad Eggleston: Don't worry about it a little bit.
- 3:25Phil: the streams, but… For Mark Zuckerberg, whatever he.
- 3:28Tyler Johnson: So, I don't know…
- 3:29Tad Eggleston: Actually, what I really need to do is have Kelly make up a poster to send out to you to put up to plug the show in shop.
- 3:36Tyler Johnson: For sure.
- 3:36Tad Eggleston: And then your customers will start expecting you to come back.
- 3:39Phil: Well, and the poster would have to have his face on it, naturally.
- 3:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah, we could do that.
- 3:43Phil: Yeah.
- 3:44Phil: There's a three-face version.
- 3:46Tyler Johnson: A three-phase one, yeah.
- 3:47Phil: Oh, I haven't seen the three-faced one.
- 3:49Tyler Johnson: Make sure there's a QR code so that they can go right to it, kind of thing, but… Right.
- 3:55Phil: Oh, that's a smart move, too.
- 3:57Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that'.
- 3:57Tad Eggleston: Let's roll through the news so we can get to the thankful part, because we need a thankful episode.
- 4:04Tad Eggleston: We've had too much heaviness. So,
- 4:09Tad Eggleston: We've taken slightly deeper dives into this for a while, but 90 are… who needs to be out of the Angleme business entirely, officially suspended this year's edition of Engleme. They refused to cancel it yet.
- 4:27Phil: Jeez.
- 4:28Tad Eggleston: Because they… they are under some misguided…
- 4:33Tad Eggleston: idea that it might go on with them,
- 4:39Tad Eggleston: It's pretty clear.
- 4:41Phil: Yeah. Hoping to sweep it under the rug, but yeah, that was…
- 4:44Tad Eggleston: Right, I mean, particularly as the previously, unnamed .
- 4:53Tad Eggleston: Employee who was sexually assaulted.
- 4:56Tad Eggleston: last year, and then fired for reporting it, is now named. She's come out and been doing interviews,
- 5:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah… Yeah.
- 5:07Tyler Johnson: Crazy.
- 5:08Tad Eggleston: away, and then we need to get Angelen back.
- 5:12Tad Eggleston: But, in happier news, we have, The Beat has their holiday gift guides out, and as always, they are fantastic, so, like, if you have comic lovers in your life, and we're not good enough in terms of all of the stuff we tell you is awesome, The Beat often fills in gaps that we miss.
- 5:31Tad Eggleston: And for that matter, if you've got video game lovers or whatnot, the stuff that we don't cover, the beat does, so go check out Heidi's…
- 5:40Tad Eggleston: Heidi and companies work.
- 5:41Phil: I was gonna say, who do you think has been telling me about good stuff for the past 10 years in comics, you know? That's our secret weapon.
- 5:49Phil: Right, right.
- 5:50Tad Eggleston: What kind of week has it been? Well.
- 5:55Tyler Johnson: Been crazy.
- 5:56Phil: A lot of turkeys out there.
- 5:57Tad Eggleston: It turns out that Pete Hegseth is enough of a war criminal that there are actually Republicans who are now calling for investigation. Armed Services Committees in both chambers
- 6:12Tad Eggleston: Have… have announced that they will be investigating the…
- 6:16Tad Eggleston: extrajudicial killings, also known as war crimes, or really, since we're not at war, murder. Yeah.
- 6:24Tyler Johnson: Doesn't it feel like he's just trying to, like, flex his muscles and show, like, I can do this if I want to?
- 6:30Tad Eggleston: It is crazy.
- 6:31Phil: Pretty, pretty stupid.
- 6:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:32Phil: behavior for, yeah.
- 6:34Phil: politician.
- 6:35Tad Eggleston: So, I mean, again, upside, looks like there might actually be investigations. Whether there'll be consequences, we'll see. Meanwhile,
- 6:49Tad Eggleston: It's so hard to even know how to handle this one, because it's a tragedy, it's a horrible thing. Two members of the West Virginia National Guard were shot in D.C, one has died, the other is still in critical condition.
- 7:04Tad Eggleston: Thankfully, it's not going without being said that they… are probably illegally in DC?
- 7:14Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 7:18Tad Eggleston: But… still, there are a lot of people that want to make it about the Afghan refugee who…
- 7:28Tad Eggleston: Got them.
- 7:30Tad Eggleston: Gore allegedly shot them.
- 7:32Tad Eggleston: And tie it to immigration and how we shouldn't do that, blah blah blah.
- 7:37Tad Eggleston: But Spencer Ackerman.
- 7:42Tad Eggleston: Friend of the podcast.
- 7:44Tad Eggleston: Pulitzer winning.
- 7:45Tad Eggleston: Pulitzer Prize winning.
- 7:47Tad Eggleston: national security reporter has a piece at Sateo.
- 7:51Tad Eggleston: Talking specifically about how this particular Afghan refugee worked for us in Afghanistan.
- 7:58Tad Eggleston: On what can really only be called kill squads, run by the CIA.
- 8:06Phil: At an incredibly young age.
- 8:08Tad Eggleston: so…
- 8:11Phil: That's true.
- 8:12Tad Eggleston: everybody to go read that piece, I'm gonna drop a link into… Our, our, our show…
- 8:19Tad Eggleston: I don't even know what you call the part that goes on the
- 8:22Tad Eggleston: out to all the podcast services or whatnot, like, not full show notes, everybody knows I'm way behind on the blog.
- 8:30Tad Eggleston: But… But I'll drop the link in the way I often drop Kickstarter links or whatever in.
- 8:39Phil: Yeah, I'd be… I'd be very interested to read.
- 8:41Tad Eggleston: It's worth their details.
- 8:43Phil: Yeah.
- 8:43Tad Eggleston: Oops.
- 8:45Phil: I was gonna go out on a limb and say that, I, I don't think that…
- 8:51Phil: There is a lot of, crime across the country from…
- 8:56Phil: you know, immigrants, people from foreign countries… Oh, statistically speaking, there really isn't.
- 9:01Tad Eggleston: Exactly, yeah. Even less from illegal immigrants.
- 9:04Phil: Exactly. So when it does happen, there are extenuating circumstances, and something really fucked up and wrong has happened, clearly. And so that's why I'm glad.
- 9:11Tad Eggleston: Most of the time.
- 9:12Phil: has the details, you know.
- 9:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:14Phil: Should never be taken as, as, you know, a reason to…
- 9:21Phil: I don't know, yeah, it sounds like a personal tragedy.
- 9:24Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I just… I don't… I don't have the energy to…
- 9:28Phil: Yeah.
- 9:29Tad Eggleston: Get into the politics of a couple of guardsmen being shot right now.
- 9:34Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I mean, it's the…
- 9:35Tad Eggleston: The people that are playing politics with it are also lying.
- 9:39Phil: Oh yeah, as per usual.
- 9:41Tad Eggleston: Oh, boy.
- 9:43Tad Eggleston: So, anyway, let us… Talk some new-to-order comics.
- 9:51Tyler Johnson: Yeah, this is gonna be exciting. This is Archie versus Er…
- 9:56Tyler Johnson: I don't know, how do you pronounce the X? Is it verb?
- 9:59Tad Eggleston: I just go, Archie X, Army of Darkness.
- 10:03Phil: Okay, Archie X, Army of Darkness number 1. You actually have to multiply it?
- 10:08Tyler Johnson: Eric Birdo.
- 10:09Tyler Johnson: Bill Gavilan. It's a teenage nightmare. There's a certain man named Ash, you may have heard of him, who is doomed to battle against the forces of evil over and over again, whether he likes it or not.
- 10:24Tyler Johnson: Now, no matter where he goes, the cycle of violence always repeats itself until the day that he arrives in the picturesque town of Riverdale.
- 10:35Tyler Johnson: This supernaturally wholesome community seems to break the curse that has plagued Ash ever since he encountered its otherworldly evil all those years ago. Or rather, the curse was broken.
- 10:48Tyler Johnson: Until an over-curious teenager named Archie finds a copy of the Necromica… Necronomicon?
- 10:55Tyler Johnson: Exmortis, and reads a portion of it aloud, summoning the horrifying dead… deadites once again. Now, Ash and the good townsfolk of Riverdale must hold back the undead hordes long enough for Archie to undo what he's unwillingly done.
- 11:13Tyler Johnson: Otherwise, an army of darkness will roll over Riverdale and destroy everything and everyone in the path.
- 11:20Tyler Johnson: And that's just not going to happen on Ashley J. Williams' watch.
- 11:25Tyler Johnson: This looks really good, you guys. It's gonna be in stores on February 4th of 26.
- 11:32Tad Eggleston: more to cover.
- 11:32Tyler Johnson: It's weird to say 26.
- 11:33Tad Eggleston: February 5th.
- 11:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 11:35Tyler Johnson: That's weird.
- 11:36Tad Eggleston: This is totally one that, I would have made fun of 10 years ago, and then I read Archie vs. Predator, and never again. Never again will I make fun of an Archie crossover with anything.
- 11:49Tyler Johnson: I, this is not a plug.
- 11:51Tad Eggleston: At least…
- 11:52Tyler Johnson: I am…
- 11:52Tad Eggleston: At least not before reading it.
- 11:54Tyler Johnson: I have an Army of Darkness comic in my shop right now that's, like, 80 bucks. So, I mean, that property is still popular.
- 12:03Phil: How did that?
- 12:03Tad Eggleston: And you can plug your store all you want. Nexus Vault, La Verne, Minnesota.
- 12:09Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I'm doing, the comic shop lately, that's why I haven't been on the show, but it's been fun. I'm really having a great time, I'm happy that it's.
- 12:20Tad Eggleston: My… well, we'll get to the thankful part. NexusVault.com.
- 12:25Tyler Johnson: Yeah. People can help…
- 12:27Tad Eggleston: Tyler out by… people can help Tyler out by ordering stuff there, and the more you order, the more likely he is to be able to come back to be on the show, because he can hire somebody to be there on weekends.
- 12:39Tyler Johnson: We… we did have somebody, and he quit on us.
- 12:44Tyler Johnson: We'll get into that. We'll get into that.
- 12:46Tad Eggleston: Barbarian Behind Bars, number one, from Elliot Kalen and Andrea Moody, the team that gave us,
- 12:55Tad Eggleston: Oh god, why can't I remember? It was an Aftershock book that went away about the… a slasher in the trains of…
- 13:04Tad Eggleston: Or in New York, and I'm just…
- 13:06Tyler Johnson: Maniac of New York?
- 13:07Tad Eggleston: Maniac of… yeah, Maniac of New York.
- 13:10Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 13:10Tad Eggleston: have re-teamed up for Barbarian Behind Bars. Who is this mysterious, muscle-bound warrior who came to our world in a storm of magic and violence?
- 13:20Tad Eggleston: That's what public defender Irene Chang wants to know. The guy came out of nowhere, doesn't speak English, and now she's supposed to help him beat a murder charge after he chopped some other weird dude's head off with a magic axe in broad daylight?
- 13:34Tad Eggleston: Of course, he may not live to go to trial with all the enemies he's making in prison.
- 13:39Tad Eggleston: Good thing his cellmate grills a mean cheese sandwich.
- 13:45Tad Eggleston: Final order cutoff is January 19th in stores on February 11th.
- 13:54Phil: Alright, next up we've got Bleeding Hearts No. 1 from Dennis Camp and Stepin Morian, the red-hot writer of Absolute Martian Manhunter, and we're skipping that preamble to The Zombies won, and 10 years after the fall of humanity. They're the dominant form of life, or not life, on Earth.
- 14:12Phil: They've developed their own cultural practices, their own language, their own society. Mouse pokes golf ball through hole in head, poke for short, is a beloved member of his community, and with his brother-in-arm mush, he's happy to shamble along through the only world he can remember, until the day his heart mysteriously starts beating again.
- 14:32Phil: And in a blink, the first human he…
- 14:34Phil: Humans he sees have stopped looking like food, and have started looking like
- 14:39Phil: Friends, the team behind 20th Century Men, the bold mission statement that launched writer Dennis Camp and artist Stephen Morian to the next level of the comics industry, have reunited to bring you a world ruled by ruthless kill-or-be-killed logic, pitted against the demands of a single beating, bleeding emotional heart.
- 14:57Phil: Final order cut off, January 19th, in stores, February 11th.
- 15:04Tad Eggleston: Diorc.
- 15:05Tad Eggleston: Half Dwarf, half arc.
- 15:08Tad Eggleston: Orc.
- 15:08Tad Eggleston: Armed with nothing but a magical, yet ambitiously violent shield.
- 15:14Tyler Johnson: I think that's pronounced dork, sorry. I just…
- 15:17Phil: Could be.
- 15:17Tad Eggleston: I think it is, but I decided to have fun with it.
- 15:20Phil: I like… I like that. New York.
- 15:21Tyler Johnson: Okay, alright, sorry, Ted, go on.
- 15:24Tad Eggleston: with nothing but a magical yet ambitiously violent shield, a lonely orphan stumbles head-first into Sunderain's never-ending war between light and dark. Elves versus orcs. Wizards vs. common sense, dragons vs. Literally Everyone, and caught dead center, Diorc.
- 15:45Tad Eggleston: With a wholly, inconvenient doomsday prophecy, the half-dwarf, half-arch, Ald York, is spated to end the world soon. Every human, elf, goblin, dwarf, snargle-tooth, Necroid, ice giant, trauma llama.
- 16:02Tad Eggleston: Trauma Llama, are you gonna bring Trauma Llamas?
- 16:05Tyler Johnson: Mama Llama Red Pajama, Trauma Llama.
- 16:08Tad Eggleston: And at least 3 other unpronounceable magical creatures will know his name and want him dead. There will also be a chicken. This is from Brett Bean.
- 16:19Tad Eggleston: And Jean-Francois Bolou?
- 16:24Tad Eggleston: Final order cutoff is January 12th in stores on February 4th.
- 16:29Tad Eggleston: from Image Comics.
- 16:34Tyler Johnson: Alright, this happens to be, quickly one of my favorite new, not new, this is an old IP, but comic books that I'm getting into is DuckTales. This is the DuckTales Valentine's Day Special 2026 by, Connor Ratliff and James III.
- 16:53Tyler Johnson: Well, or is it James Ill? I don't know.
- 16:56Tad Eggleston: No, it's James III.
- 16:58Tyler Johnson: Okay, and then, art by Libero Ermetti?
- 17:02Tyler Johnson: All fair in love and sorcery, the world's richest duck didn't accumulate his uncomfortable cajilions by being anyone's fool.
- 17:12Tyler Johnson: And no one is more foolish than a fool in love. So when February 14th rolls around, and the unsolicited cards and presents from charlatans and two-timers start piling up on his desk.
- 17:23Tyler Johnson: Scrooge McDuck has multiple levels of precautions in place to neutralize all of their nefarious schemes. One age-old adversary, however, has forged a plan to bypass all of McDuck Money Bin's famed offenses and secure the ultimate prize, Uncle Scrooge's precious number one dime.
- 17:43Tyler Johnson: The, indefinite… I can't… what is that? Independable.
- 17:48Tyler Johnson: The indefatable magicka dispel just needs to get close enough to Scrooge to cloud his mind with the rare forget-me-do flower.
- 17:59Tyler Johnson: But when the single-minded sorceress is caught in the same memory-fogging spell as her quarry, all bets are off. Romance is suddenly in the air.
- 18:08Tyler Johnson: Having forgotten their long history of enmity, could these rival ducks turn into cooing lovebirds?
- 18:16Tyler Johnson: The final order cutoff is January 12th, and this will be in stores February 11th.
- 18:26Phil: Alright, now it's time for the Florida Hippopotamus Cocaine Massacre.
- 18:31Tyler Johnson: It's just not the title.
- 18:33Phil: by Fred Kennedy and James Edward Clark. Disco Hippo Wonderland is the number one amusement park in Flamingo City, but few realize its corpulent owner, Janz Major Disco, is about to release the most potent drug ever created, Coke 45.
- 18:51Phil: Fortunately for humanity, Agent Clark Nebraska is on the case. She'll bring down Disco home come heck or high water. That was the plan until her undercover agent, Tico Senecoza, was captured. And before she can rescue him, Mikael, Tico's sexy loose cannon of an older brother, beats her to the punch, storming into the park with bullets flying. Disco panics, dumping the Coke-45 into the hippo enclosure and
- 19:16Phil: letting them loose on the park before fleeing into Wonderland's tunnel network. Nebraska's plans are lawfully… are totally off the rails, and things get worse when a marijuana smoke-fueled hurricane drowns the park in torrential rain. Now it's up to Nebraska and Mikel to create an uncomfortable truce to bring Disco down before he escapes.
- 19:36Phil: Final order cutoff, January 26th, in stores, February 18th, from Mad Cave.
- 19:43Tyler Johnson: They look great. This kind of silly, crazy stories, I love them.
- 19:48Phil: Yeah.
- 19:50Tad Eggleston: I like up here that you've got, in quotes, fearless Fred Kennedy and James, quote, Edward Clark.
- 19:57Phil: Yeah, that's a pretty good one. It's a pretty good one.
- 20:01Tyler Johnson: quote.
- 20:02Phil: Oh…
- 20:05Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 20:05Tad Eggleston: Alright, so…
- 20:06Tyler Johnson: Graphic novels.
- 20:07Tad Eggleston: Travels, yeah.
- 20:08Tyler Johnson: Alright, this is Detective Stanley in The Green Thumb Thief by Hannah Tuniklife, Erica Harrison from Flying Eye Books.
- 20:19Tyler Johnson: Alright, a clever, funny comic for young readers. Oh, I'll skip that. It's a botanical burglary who is swiping precious and priceless plants from the gnarly bone gardens. Barnaby Moss, head of horticulture, is flummoxed. Someone is thieving very rare specimens from the winter garden, and they are worth a lot of money.
- 20:39Tyler Johnson: The latest detective, Stanley Mystery.
- 20:42Tyler Johnson: is curlier than a vine and full of twisty secrets. Join Detective Stanley and his pal Parker Pine to catch the botanical Bandit. A perfect crime for young readers moving on from picture books, children who love comics, or anyone who likes a good mystery.
- 20:59Tyler Johnson: Guys, this is gonna be a final order cut off of January 5th, that's my mom's birthday, and we'll be in stores February 3rd.
- 21:09Tyler Johnson: Looks good. I'm gonna order that one for sure. I need more. This,
- 21:14Tyler Johnson: Children's titles, you know?
- 21:18Tad Eggleston: I've been highlighting them all. You have this wonderful resource. You can just go look at the most recent show notes and have a rundown of everything that I thought was interesting in both catalogs.
- 21:30Tyler Johnson: The… the issue is I'm going by final order cutoff when I'm ordering.
- 21:35Tad Eggleston: No, I understand.
- 21:36Tyler Johnson: And so I'm… your stuff is by, The order… New to Oracle.
- 21:44Tad Eggleston: But I do also do the final order cutoff a week ahead of time.
- 21:48Tyler Johnson: True, yep.
- 21:50Tyler Johnson: You do.
- 21:52Tyler Johnson: Alright, good to know.
- 21:55Tad Eggleston: You know, these are the options.
- 21:57Tad Eggleston: The next one's mine as well, good lord, sorry guys.
- 21:59Tad Eggleston: Bring it back to back, man!
- 22:00Phil: Back, you too.
- 22:02Tyler Johnson: Frankenstein unconquered. Yeah, it is me.
- 22:05Tad Eggleston: They can't.
- 22:06Phil: Yep.
- 22:06Tyler Johnson: Book 1 from Wells Thompson, Dalton K. Shannon, Mary Landreau, Elizabeth McKenzie, and Dahlia Maha from Hermes Press.
- 22:17Tyler Johnson: 500 years after the end of Mary Shelley's novel, the Arctic thaws and the beast awakens to a bombed-out apocalypse as hideous and hostile as he is.
- 22:28Tyler Johnson: Seeing an opportunity to reinvent himself and live the peaceful life he always wanted, the Beast attempts to live simply with villagers who are unafraid of his ghastly appearance.
- 22:40Tyler Johnson: But when soldiers come to collect their due, violence is the only answer, and his dream of a simple life is ripped away in a nightmare of his own design. Having followed his warpath to its bloody conclusion, the beast was exiled to the stars, his legacy tarnished, his family flayed before his eyes.
- 22:59Tyler Johnson: This looks awesome, you guys. It's gonna… Final order cutoff is January 19th, and it will be in storage February 18th.
- 23:10Phil: Alright, next up is Genderqueer, the annotated edition, from Maya Kobabe, Phoebe Kobabe, Justin Hall, Randy Som.
- 23:22Phil: This special annotated edition calls on voices from academic and creative communities to further shed light on Kobabe's work, exploring the technicalities of comic creation, the history of the LGBTQIA plus community, and highlighting personal anecdotes from a host of writers and artists discussing their own experiences growing up queer, featuring commentary from designer and animator Phoebe Kobabe, the
- 23:47Phil: VCs of, okay, cartoonist Ashley R. Guillory, Dr. Sandra Cox, Matthew, no…
- 23:57Phil: And author Hal Shreve, and many more. This beautiful hardcover edition promises to be a wonderful educational tool for years to come. Final order cutoff of April 27th, in stores, May 20th.
- 24:13Tad Eggleston: And I had them skip to the annotation parts, because.
- 24:17Phil: Yes.
- 24:17Tad Eggleston: Most people…
- 24:19Tad Eggleston: that listen to this podcast, at least, know… know one of the most banned books in America is genderqueer, and a lot of why, and probably have gone and watched…

- 24:45Tad Eggleston: bonus.
- 24:46Phil: It's absolute.
- 24:46Tad Eggleston: Absolutely.
- 24:47Phil: It's absolutely bonkers, the… the whole blue over that book, but yeah, everybody needs to know about it.
- 24:53Tad Eggleston: Yep.

- 26:57Tyler Johnson: I have got… yeah, I've been getting paper cuts.
- 27:01Tad Eggleston: They, they give, they give…
- 27:03Tad Eggleston: Scholastic Graphics a run for their money in terms of…
- 27:07Phil: I agree.
- 27:07Tad Eggleston: Best stuff.
- 27:08Tyler Johnson: Quite a few paper cut stuff.
- 27:09Phil: I think I might get that for my niece for her birthday. That's also a shout-out to my sister-in-law, Kelly, if she's listening. Hey, Kelly!

- 28:26Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 28:28Tyler Johnson: Let's see here… iTyrant, this has been selling pretty well for me in single issue, but, yeah.
- 28:36Tad Eggleston: I've heard good things.
- 28:37Tyler Johnson: Yeah, it's by E.E. Zahn, Godfar from Image Comics.
- 28:43Tyler Johnson: The lives of a struggling but madly ambitious Iranian playwright and an Arab serpent king from 611 AD, who once was given the power to halt death itself in its tracks, became, become
- 28:59Tyler Johnson: read to you.
- 29:00Tyler Johnson: Reticulated.
- 29:02Tyler Johnson: Around a reticulated… I can't read.
- 29:05Tyler Johnson: Around a non-zero-sum game.
- 29:09Tyler Johnson: Epic action and magical mythology clash when Zahak, a fearsome legend infamous for his stark depiction of tyrants, proposes to Hafez to toss out the death-dealing up
- 29:22Tyler Johnson: unpromising myths of 7th C conclusion.
- 29:27Tyler Johnson: Instead, Hafez must retell it with a Kirby exodus for Zahaq.
- 29:33Tyler Johnson: To give his tale a Miller reboot in the comic industry, Hafez must also deal with the risk of deportation to Iran.
- 29:42Tyler Johnson: And going home to a past, and a looming persecution he does not want to face. This is, awesome, you guys. It's got a final order cut off of January 12th, and it's gonna be in stores February 18th.
- 29:57Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Josh Eisureich was telling me about this, and it sounds really good. I'm gonna have to go catch up.
- 30:05Tyler Johnson: Yeah, it looks great. I have not read it either, but it, you know, I…
- 30:09Tyler Johnson: There's an issue out this week, that's why it's on my mind, so…
- 30:14Tad Eggleston: The Killer Affairs of the State 2. This is another one that we should bring you back to discuss, because we did all of the killer.
- 30:21Tyler Johnson: I'm reading this in issues right now.
- 30:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I am too. The assassin returns, and this time, the job gets personal.
- 30:29Tad Eggleston: Now operating out of a secluded cabin in the mountains of South…
- 30:33Tad Eggleston: of the south of France, the killer has developed a straightforward routine. Take the job, complete the mission, disappear. But when an unexpected neighbor with her own dark past suddenly disrupts his carefully managed solitude, it becomes the catalyst for a mission unlike any he's taken before.
- 30:49Tad Eggleston: After uncovering a sprawling human trafficking operation with international ties, the killer is forced to confront not only his enemies, but also the limits of a dangerous

- 31:07Tad Eggleston: This is from Motz and Luke Giacomon at Boom Archaea. Final order cutoff is January 26th, and in stores on April 28th.
- 31:21Tyler Johnson: really good.
- 31:22Tad Eggleston: I love the killer.
- 31:23Tyler Johnson: So good.
- 31:27Phil: Alrighty, and then we've got Re-Trailer Trash, Volume 1 from Natalie Wong and Alyssa Villery, and Yishan Lee.
- 31:36Phil: Tabitha Moore has lived a miserable life of regret and being treated as trailer trash Tabitha. But after a mishap with an MRI, her mind is sent back to 1998 and into her 16-year-old body. With her life now in front of her, maybe this is the chance to redo her life.
- 31:54Phil: But is it so easy to change what you've already lived through? It's gonna be…
- 31:58Phil: final order cutoff of January 5th in stores, March 11th, and that is going to be from Webtoon and Volume.
- 32:08Phil: and vaults.
- 32:11Tad Eggleston: Alrighty, so Tyler, you want to announce our new thing, rather than making people now sit through 20 minutes of us reading through all of the things.
- 32:24Tyler Johnson: All of it.
- 32:24Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 32:25Tyler Johnson: Sure. Alright, guys, if you want a complete rundown of, the list that we're talking about, jump to, the… after the next page, or the next page, I should say. Yeah.
- 32:38Tad Eggleston: Stick around after this…
- 32:40Tyler Johnson: Around…
- 32:41Tad Eggleston: For the next page.
- 32:44Tyler Johnson: stick around, and that'll be brought to you by, my new shop, the Nexus Vault, in La Verne, Minnesota. We have been up and going for a month, and it has been a blast.
- 32:55Tyler Johnson: I am exhausted, because we had a hire, but like I said, he decided that was too much work, because.
- 33:05Phil: Dun dun!
- 33:06Tyler Johnson: It has taken off. I'm just gonna say that, like, we're busy a lot. Awesome. That's great. And the person that we hired has a little bit of social anxiety, and I knew that, and…
- 33:18Tad Eggleston: Comics? No.
- 33:20Tyler Johnson: Yeah…
- 33:21Phil: You know.
- 33:21Tyler Johnson: And I knew that, and it… after our literally opening day, he was like, I… I can't do this. I'm like, okay.
- 33:29Tyler Johnson: And we decided we're gonna try.
- 33:31Tad Eggleston: to be, like, the Tuesday guy.
- 33:33Tyler Johnson: Well, currently, we're not open Tuesdays.
- 33:37Tad Eggleston: Oh, so you're closed Sunday through Tuesday?
- 33:40Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yup.
- 33:40Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 33:41Tyler Johnson: It's not a bad… it's not a bad idea. Yeah, Wednesday through Saturdays are, days that we are open, so…
- 33:47Tad Eggleston: Gotcha.
- 33:48Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 33:50Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, those are also brought to you by Modern Age Comics in Algonquin, Illinois. So, we got comic shops in two states.
- 34:02Tad Eggleston: That will be coming up again, I'm certain, when we get to the… our thankful…
- 34:06Tyler Johnson: Thankfulness. Yes. Final order cut off this week, not a lot, but we've got Loka's The Maggie and Hopi story from Fanographics.
- 34:14Tad Eggleston: In stores on January 21st. This is the collection of Jaime Hernandez, stories from, like, the first 50 issues of Love and Rockets. And then…
- 34:28Tad Eggleston: The Past by Katriana Chapman, also at Fanographics, on January 21st.
- 34:35Tad Eggleston: Crowdfunding, we have Planet Death Original Art Edition from Tomas Giarello at Bad Idea on Kickstarter through December 4th, and Destiny New York Volume 7 by Pat Shand and Matteo Leone, Space Between Entertainment on Kickstarter through December.
- 34:51Tad Eggleston: Fifth.
- 34:52Tad Eggleston: 3 amazing books this week.
- 34:57Tyler Johnson: I love your number one.
- 34:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it was kind of a light week, but there was some really good stuff.
- 35:04Tad Eggleston: leading off with Orla, number 4 from John Lees and Sally Cantorino. We're winding down, taking twists, having major character development, whatnot, and still some, like.
- 35:19Tad Eggleston: Blood and guts and gore.
- 35:22Tad Eggleston: Galactic number 1 from Kurt Byers, and Emocopena absolutely lived up to… to the hype. And, Devil on My Shorter number one from Kyle Starks, Peter Kowalski at Dark Horse, had one of the coolest ever
- 35:38Tad Eggleston: Trigger warnings at the beginning.
- 35:43Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I did.
- 35:44Tad Eggleston: It started out with, warning…
- 35:49Tad Eggleston: Depictions of gore, violence against women, etc, etc, etc, but then a separate line of…
- 35:58Tad Eggleston: Her revenge will be justice.
- 36:02Phil: Nice.
- 36:05Tad Eggleston: That's crazy.
- 36:06Tyler Johnson: It was a great book. It was a great book. I, I really enjoyed it. What's nice is I'm reading my stuff early, because I, like I said, I'm getting it a few days early.
- 36:15Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:17Tyler Johnson: That's right, so…
- 36:18Phil: of heaven.
- 36:20Tyler Johnson: Except, you know, you gotta unpack it all, you know?
- 36:24Tad Eggleston: And put it into the system, and… okay.
- 36:27Phil: I was gonna say, I was gonna say, it probably, it probably, you know, it…
- 36:30Tad Eggleston: Do you have a way to just upload the invoice once you've…
- 36:35Tad Eggleston: Made certain that it's all there? No.
- 36:37Tyler Johnson: Oh, we'll have to talk about that. No, I do not. Interesting. I'm using Square. I'm not using… I'm not using the comic suite
- 36:46Tyler Johnson: Is that what it's called? Comic Suite?
- 36:48Tad Eggleston: Well, you shouldn't be.
- 36:48Tyler Johnson: from time to…
- 36:49Tad Eggleston: diamond one.
- 36:50Tyler Johnson: Yeah, no, I'm not using…
- 36:51Tad Eggleston: A number of other options.
- 36:53Tyler Johnson: Okay. Anyway, we'll talk about that. I'm just using.
- 36:56Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 36:56Tyler Johnson: native software.
- 36:58Tad Eggleston: Gotcha.
- 36:59Phil: Oh, if you use the Diamond Suite.
- 37:00Tad Eggleston: Does Square have any… like, I know that,
- 37:08Tad Eggleston: Yeah, we'll have to talk… later, and…
- 37:12Tyler Johnson: There's a… there's one that I'm looking at, but it, you know, being that they're mostly around $100 a month, it's just an expense I don't want right now.
- 37:21Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 37:21Tyler Johnson: You know, but… Anyway, let's keep going.
- 37:26Tad Eggleston: Take a walk!
- 37:27Phil: Oh, yeah! So, I actually, I did not get a chance to head to the comic shop this week due to, a holiday that felt like it came out of nowhere. So instead, these are, it's the end of the month. If somehow you are listening to this today and not tomorrow on December 1st, here are, the things I burned the last of my hoopla pics on.
- 37:47Phil: First up, there is Crystal Heart, a graphic novel from Dark Horse by Aran Adharam and Aviv Orr. We had a good chat with them recently, go ahead and check that out if you want to hear about this.
- 37:58Phil: actual play comic. It sounds, really great, and I'm excited to dig into it. Then there's All Against All, a miniseries from, I think, I think 2 years ago, maybe? From…
- 38:10Tad Eggleston: Good.
- 38:11Phil: Oh yeah, the pitch was,
- 38:13Phil: Tarzan, or Alien, where Tarzan is the alien. I think that was… that was how they described it. From Alex Pecknatal, and Casper Wingard, and Hassan Atzmin El Hao.
- 38:25Phil: Then there is Under Kingdom, which looks like a crunchy graphic novel from Mary Enger and Christoph Bogox in Dark Horse, it looks awesome. And then, I figured I'd give a try to,
- 38:37Phil: book, from people I'd never heard of before. It's called Knights Season 1, Part 1 by Wyatt Kennedy and Luigi Formisano at Image. It looks pretty, pretty interesting. It's all over.
- 38:47Tad Eggleston: Wyatt Kennedy did Bolero.
- 38:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 38:50Phil: I really enjoy it.
- 38:51Tad Eggleston: it, and I.
- 38:52Tyler Johnson: That was good.
- 38:53Tad Eggleston: More of… more of his work.
- 38:55Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 38:56Phil: I'll try to get to that one first, and, you know, see if we can incentivize.
- 39:01Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it doesn't matter which order. So Tyler, you know what has happened since you… you bailed on…
- 39:08Phil: Abandoned the One Piece race.
- 39:10Tad Eggleston: I… I have had… not had nearly the… the drive to… to keep
- 39:17Tad Eggleston: So, this is, like, the third week in a row where I read no chapters of One Piece. I'm stuck at 617.
- 39:24Tyler Johnson: Tad, I…
- 39:25Phil: Have you kept reading One Piece? Have you pulled ahead?
- 39:28Tyler Johnson: No. I was… I was gonna… I was gonna have some song and dance about how I'm on, like, chapter 1000 or something, but…
- 39:36Tyler Johnson: No, I have been reading it, but very sparingly. I'm not sure what chapter I'm on right now.
- 39:43Tyler Johnson: But, yeah, I… I have just had to put that aside. I'm just too busy.
- 39:50Tyler Johnson: Nope.
- 39:50Tad Eggleston: No, I understand, I understand. And after Phil brags that he read one more chapter of manga than me again this week.
- 40:01Phil: We'll talk about the reasons we've been busy.
- 40:04Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 40:04Phil: Oh, yeah. Yeah, it's still weird. I am intrigued because it looks like Bob is ignoring the, the uncomfortable ghost that's following him around, and it… Bob also has a younger brother who seems like a very interesting character, so I think I am sticking with this one. We'll,
- 40:19Phil: You know? It's a classic for a reason.
- 40:23Tad Eggleston: Cool.
- 40:24Tad Eggleston: This is the, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, so as is, 22 Panels Tradition,
- 40:35Tad Eggleston: We're gonna talk about what we're thankful for, mostly in the world of comics, but at this point, the world of comics just includes our worlds.
- 40:43Tad Eggleston: Because, like, I mean, that's one of the things I'm thankful for. Somehow, I… I belong in the world of comics.
- 40:50Tad Eggleston: Which is kind of… Weird.
- 40:53Tad Eggleston: I've actually been writing up panel proposals for C2E2.
- 40:58Phil: That's amazing. That we'll be putting in…
- 41:00Tad Eggleston: I have some really impressive people who are willing to be on panels that I'm putting in, that I'm not gonna announce on the air, at least.
- 41:08Phil: Wow.
- 41:08Tad Eggleston: it's been approved.
- 41:10Tad Eggleston: But, but, like…
- 41:12Tyler Johnson: For this seat to each other, like, in March or April, whatever it is?
- 41:15Tad Eggleston: Yeah, the deadline is tomorrow, so literally…
- 41:19Phil: cow. Yeah.
- 41:20Tad Eggleston: literally… I mean, I've written them all up, I bounced them off of my friend Britt, who's.
- 41:25Tad Eggleston: done panels at country… er, Comic-cons all over the country, so, like, I wanted his… his take.
- 41:31Tad Eggleston: So at this point, it's mostly just cut and paste, and I'll be doing that literally, after we're done with this, while I'm waiting for…
- 41:40Tad Eggleston: The… the… show to download?
- 41:44Tad Eggleston: Or finish processing on Zoom.
- 41:46Tad Eggleston: But yeah, no, it's, like, weird that, that, like, not only did I finally…
- 41:54Tad Eggleston: Reached the point where… I'm like, hey, I do this podcast, and by the way, we have 750
- 42:04Tad Eggleston: As of yesterday, 750 episodes up.
- 42:08Tyler Johnson: Awesome.
- 42:09Phil: A Titanic achievement.
- 42:11Tad Eggleston: Right. That, like, When somebody… when somebody shot me an email saying, hey, crazy idea, why don't we…
- 42:22Tad Eggleston: propose an indie comics panel, I went, that's not a crazy idea.
- 42:28Tyler Johnson: I'm not crazy about.
- 42:30Tad Eggleston: That's something that I should be doing.
- 42:32Tyler Johnson: It's like, yeah, that is right in your wheelhouse.
- 42:35Tad Eggleston: You know, when I really had that feeling that I'm like, is when…
- 42:43Tad Eggleston: You know, as I… because I've got… I've got some long-shot panel ideas, and… and I've got some, like, steadier panel ideas, but because so few guests have been announced, it's harder.
- 42:57Tad Eggleston: Because, like…
- 42:58Tad Eggleston: some of the panel ideas would be much less long shot if I could go, oh, well, Chris Condon will be there, and Tom King will be there, and whatever, but I don't know who will be in Chicago, so I don't know…
- 43:12Tad Eggleston: But, so, I was, I was, and I'll, I'll even tease it just a little bit. As I was driving to work one morning.
- 43:19Tad Eggleston: I, I was, thinking, who do I know in Chicago that I could make an
- 43:28Tad Eggleston: Easy panel… or make a good panel out of.
- 43:32Tad Eggleston: And,
- 43:35Tad Eggleston: So… so, I don't know if I've told you guys that one of… one of my autistic things is sometimes I'll start hearing a song before I, like, know why.
- 43:46Tad Eggleston: It's kind of the way my brain will lead me to something. Interesting. So I'm driving, and I'm trying to think, who do I know in Chicago that… and suddenly, in my head, I'm hearing Bob Dylan singing, I was so much older than… I'm younger than that now.
- 44:05Phil: Hmm.
- 44:06Tad Eggleston: And I immediately knew, oh, I need to email these people.
- 44:12Tad Eggleston: And I did so first thing when I got into the building. So, I sent out an email to two New York Times best-selling authors at 7.45 a.m.
- 44:24Tad Eggleston: And by 11.30, they had both not only said yes, but, like, unequivocally, hell yes!
- 44:32Phil: Nice.
- 44:33Tad Eggleston: Let's do…
- 44:34Phil: I'm excited.
- 44:35Tad Eggleston: And I'm like, ugh! So, I'm really hoping that that one gets chosen, so I can tell the end of that story sooner rather than later.
- 44:45Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 44:48Tad Eggleston: But also, this show has spawned two comic shops this year.
- 44:53Tad Eggleston: For sure. Because I don't think I'm pushing things to say that…
- 45:02Tad Eggleston: part of Edgar finally taking the plunge.
- 45:05Tad Eggleston: Into buying a comic shop.
- 45:08Phil: Is that he knew he had me on his bench.
- 45:12Phil: I hope so. That's a heavy hitter, you know?
- 45:15Tad Eggleston: Right. And, you know, Tyler, I know, like, it was doing this that, like, pushed him over to when it was like, oh.
- 45:25Tad Eggleston: I left one teaching job, we didn't move, am I gonna scramble for another teaching job, or am I gonna do something else, when…
- 45:33Tad Eggleston: I think I can do this, and it sounds like he's already…
- 45:37Tad Eggleston: already reaping some benefits. So, Tyler, tell us about more of your journey, because…
- 45:44Phil: We haven't gotten to see enough of it lately, because you, like…
- 45:47Tad Eggleston: got too busy, and ran away from us, and so one of the things, I'm thankful that Tyler is just here.
- 45:53Tad Eggleston: staring back at me. I missed him. Fiddly, you're okay.
- 45:58Phil: I was about to say.
- 45:59Tad Eggleston: Still…
- 45:59Phil: And here, and here, and here, I was thinking about a joke that I'd be…
- 46:03Tad Eggleston: step in, because it would have been really, really, really, really sad if the podcast that started with Tyler saying, I'm just looking for somebody who won't flake out on me.
- 46:19Tad Eggleston: And with Tyler going, I'm too busy.
- 46:24Phil: Well, it.
- 46:25Tyler Johnson: I gotta go, guys.
- 46:26Phil: I have to imagine that Tad would… I think you'd get at least 2 or 3 episodes talking to yourself, you know?
- 46:33Tad Eggleston: You know, I mean, probably I'd just kill the weekly episode if I ever had to.
- 46:39Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, because… Or dramatically change the weekly episode.
- 46:44Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I mean, maybe just do a rundown of what's going on.
- 46:47Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 46:48Tyler Johnson: Boom.
- 46:49Phil: Full radio noise.
- 46:50Tyler Johnson: I'm… well, first of all, I'm very grateful that Phil, came on when he did. It was not intentional that I would be like, oh, sweet, there's a third guy. It can go now.
- 47:02Phil: Like a game of chips.
- 47:04Tad Eggleston: to do one thing, and then we liked the… we liked the…
- 47:08Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 47:09Tad Eggleston: When Tyler asked me if we should invite you to be the host, it didn't even occur to me that you were gonna be…
- 47:18Tad Eggleston: His semi-replacement.
- 47:20Tyler Johnson: No, not at all. I… I just wanted… I just wanted another voice to change up the dynamic, and…
- 47:26Tyler Johnson: You were a lot of fun to have on. Thank you. You're knowledgeable, you seem to be in our wheelhouse of the type of person that we like, you know? That's… these are… this is a tight set of criteria, I'm glad I could squeeze into it.
- 47:39Tyler Johnson: Oh, it's very tight, like, we've had so many people on the show, and none of them have, like, kind of, like.
- 47:45Tyler Johnson: tickled that part of my brain, going, wait a minute, this person is, like, great, you know? So, Phil, I'm very grateful that you have…
- 47:53Tad Eggleston: Thanks, Andy, keep giving us money.
- 47:54Phil: Ha!
- 47:58Tyler Johnson: Oh, man, but Andy couldn't do it, like, ongoing, you know what I mean?
- 48:02Tad Eggleston: No, he doesn't have the time.
- 48:03Tyler Johnson: No.
- 48:04Tad Eggleston: We don't even have him in the Saga Book Club.
- 48:07Phil: Yeah…
- 48:08Tyler Johnson: So,
- 48:10Tyler Johnson: Phil, I'm very grateful for you. Tad, I'm extremely grateful that you are making this into something bigger than I ever wanted or imagined we should do with it, you know what I mean?
- 48:24Tad Eggleston: Now, if we throw…
- 48:25Tyler Johnson: Oh my god.
- 48:25Tad Eggleston: Get some more listeners.
- 48:27Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 48:28Tyler Johnson: And so, yeah, I am very thankful that I've had the opportunity to, start something new in my town. My community has been so receptive to it, it's crazy.
- 48:41Tyler Johnson: We… people pop in all the time saying, I'm so glad you're here for my kids. Like, we really focus on young people.
- 48:49Phil: Oh, that's great. Oh, that's good.
- 48:51Tyler Johnson: I don't know if you've noticed.
- 48:51Tad Eggleston: Well, then I'm gonna give you a free idea.
- 48:54Tyler Johnson: Sure.
- 48:54Tad Eggleston: that I've pitched to Edgar is something that I want to do if he ever brings me on anywhere near full-time.
- 49:01Tyler Johnson: Sure.
- 49:01Tad Eggleston: Do a homework club at the shop.
- 49:04Tyler Johnson: That's not a bad idea.
- 49:05Phil: Interesting.
- 49:08Tad Eggleston: Some sort of reward for…
- 49:10Tyler Johnson: I've got table space for gaming, so I mean, it makes sense. Right.
- 49:13Phil: Right.
- 49:13Tyler Johnson: I don't know if you've seen our…
- 49:15Tad Eggleston: A 4-6 homework club where you're a teacher, so you can help out with stuff.
- 49:21Tyler Johnson: Yeah. You know, you can invite other people to come tutor, you can…
- 49:25Tad Eggleston: Give space for stuff, and then, like, some sort of major reward, but some sort of, like.
- 49:36Tyler Johnson: You know what?
- 49:37Tad Eggleston: And, like, the grading period report card, and it's worth a comic book, or…
- 49:44Tad Eggleston: Or it's worth $5 a store credit if you wanna…
- 49:47Tyler Johnson: Sure.
- 49:49Tad Eggleston: roll it.
- 49:50Tad Eggleston: Till you've got enough for something else, or something.
- 49:53Tyler Johnson: Yeah. I just think.
- 49:55Tad Eggleston: This is just what I think, because, like, I can't imagine ever stopping teaching, I just…
- 50:01Tad Eggleston: Can totally imagine teaching in different ways.
- 50:04Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 50:05Tyler Johnson: Which, it's been… it's been a lot of fun, because I've really suffered from imposter syndrome my whole life.
- 50:14Tyler Johnson: And this is the first time I don't feel like that. I don't feel like…
- 50:18Tad Eggleston: Amazing.
- 50:18Tyler Johnson: I don't feel like I…
- 50:20Tyler Johnson: put on this facade that I know what I'm doing, and I hope someone doesn't figure out that I'm an idiot.
- 50:27Tyler Johnson: You know what I mean?
- 50:28Tad Eggleston: Did you know that you don't know what you're doing, and everybody thinks you're.
- 50:31Phil: idiot, and you're doing it anyway, because…
- 50:34Tyler Johnson: somebody.
- 50:35Tad Eggleston: comics.
- 50:36Tyler Johnson: So, I felt like that was gonna be the way it was gonna go, you know?
- 50:39Tad Eggleston: I mean, I'm sorry, we watched the Big Bang episode where all of the guys wanted to invest in Stuart's comic shop, and all.
- 50:47Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 50:48Tad Eggleston: were like, you're a grown man, wanting to sell toys. You don't see a problem with that?
- 50:54Tad Eggleston: And that's, like, it's my least favorite episode, because I'm sitting there going, you women are so much smarter than, like, when Amy's doing it, I'm like, Amy, I can hand you neuroscience comic books that are good.
- 51:10Tyler Johnson: But Phil, what are you thankful for us?
- 51:13Phil: You know, just to take a quick glimpse outside comics, I'm really grateful or thankful for my family this year.
- 51:20Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 51:20Phil: This was the first year that I… well, the first time in 3 years that I've seen my, parents on Thanksgiving, so that was really nice, and my Uncle Jim. Like, actually on…
- 51:32Phil: close to Thanksgiving, as opposed to around it. And we had a great time with my wife's family in… in Louisville, too, so that was really… that was really wonderful, to hear about.
- 51:44Phil: On a down note, I am also thankful for, my parents, Pug Walter, who's had, like, 18 beautiful years, but they are unfortunately gonna be putting them down soon, so…
- 51:56Tyler Johnson: You have a pug?
- 51:57Phil: My parents have a pug, yeah.
- 51:58Tyler Johnson: Oh, I have a pug right… I told you this before? Yeah, yeah.
- 52:03Phil: Yes, they're adorable.
- 52:05Tyler Johnson: I loved them!
- 52:06Phil: I know, and he's… he's… he's blind.
- 52:09Tyler Johnson: Kelly?
- 52:09Phil: He's, deaf, he's got growths all over him, he's… he's had a long life, so, you know, this is… poor one out for Walter.
- 52:21Phil: And then in comics, I mean, I gotta say, I'm so… oh my goodness, oh, she looks lovely.
- 52:28Phil: He was sitting right by me, sleeping. Oh, that's so cute.
- 52:32Tyler Johnson: Okay, let's see if we can hear her snort. She's snorting.
- 52:34Phil: Yeah. Oh, they're so adorable, yeah. And I… I'm so thankful for you guys, for knowing you, for… thanks for bringing me into the fold, you know, it's been wonderful,
- 52:47Phil: before that, I, you know, didn't have… I… comics were around my life, but I didn't have, an
- 52:55Phil: Yeah.
- 52:56Tyler Johnson: Yes, exactly why I wanted to do this, yup.
- 52:59Phil: Yeah, yeah, it's so… it's so nice being able to talk about the books that I love and obsess over, and to get to talk to some of the creators of them. That's been one of the most incredible things this year.
- 53:11Phil: And… and also just any… honestly, anyone and everyone that we get a chance to talk to. People that I'd never, heard of before, you know?
- 53:20Tyler Johnson: Yeah, and when you just meet a random person, and you're on a Zoom call with them, you're like.
- 53:25Tyler Johnson: this is a little surreal. I don't even know you, and now we're having this video conversation. Oh, yeah. And… but, yeah, I mean, it makes me more so… I mean, it made me more so…
- 53:35Tad Eggleston: The more surreal is it when, like, you don't know them, but you know them?
- 53:40Phil: Right? Whoo! That's… that's still a,
- 53:43Phil: a surreal feeling, too. You're like, you don't know me, but I know you. Right.
- 53:50Phil: Oh, goodness.
- 53:51Tad Eggleston: You don't… like, like, when Matt Wagner was on, Kelly.
- 53:56Tyler Johnson: I can imagine, yeah.
- 53:57Tad Eggleston: like, yep, you guys don't know me at all, but I have known your work since I was in high school.
- 54:06Phil: Right?
- 54:07Phil: Goodness.
- 54:08Tad Eggleston: Both of you!
- 54:11Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 54:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 54:14Tad Eggleston: I wanna be clear, I think Tyler knows, but, like, I remember we're on a podcast that I was ribbing Tyler. Tyler is absolutely not an imposter when it comes to running a comic shop.
- 54:29Tyler Johnson: Oh, nope, nope, I didn't take.
- 54:30Tad Eggleston: He moved on to Phil so quickly that I didn't get to come in and clear up for the listeners that I was just giving Tyler a hard time. It's clear that he knows it, I mean…
- 54:43Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 54:44Tad Eggleston: I hope he never.
- 54:44Phil: I mean…
- 54:45Tad Eggleston: imposter on this podcast, because…
- 54:48Tyler Johnson: No, but you know what?
- 54:50Tad Eggleston: well.
- 54:50Tyler Johnson: You know what I did feel, Tad, is that my comic knowledge was so inadequate when I met you.
- 54:58Tyler Johnson: And I was like, holy buckets, I thought I was deep into this world, and…
- 55:04Tad Eggleston: Because you're not as… Prone to hyperfixation as me doesn't mean that you lack knowledge.
- 55:13Tyler Johnson: I lack knowledge in the, in titles, in authors, in artists. I mean, all of that, you… you just, like, expanded my world, like, 100%, because I thought what I knew was everything, you know, but what I knew was such a small portion.
- 55:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah, see, and that's one of the reasons that I keep learning more, is I've never thought that I knew everything. I still think that I know a very small portion. And I'm able to do that without feeling like an imposter, because I'm aware that I know a lot
- 55:49Tad Eggleston: More, particularly in a diverse way than a lot of people do.
- 55:54Phil: Yeah. But… but particularly because I always tend to be…
- 55:59Tad Eggleston: The jack-of-all-trades, master of none.
- 56:03Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I am… I get that. I mean, not about you, but about myself.
- 56:06Tad Eggleston: Particularly with,
- 56:10Tad Eggleston: things that I love, like, like, there… pick any aspect of baseball, music, or comics, and… and…
- 56:18Tad Eggleston: I know people who know, like, parts of it way better than I do.
- 56:26Tad Eggleston: But I also know that they have whole parts that I know a lot about that they know nothing about.
- 56:33Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 56:35Tad Eggleston: Because, like, I'm a weird hyperfixation guy, I tend to… I tend to hyperfixate at a macro level, rather than a micro level. Like, my hyperfixation is on COMICS.
- 56:48Tad Eggleston: It's not on Spider-Man.
- 56:51Phil: It's not. But that's…
- 56:52Tad Eggleston: I mean, that's… that's what keeps the hyperfixation going, though, you know? Like.
- 56:58Tyler Johnson: There's more, there's always more.
- 56:59Phil: Yeah.
- 57:00Tad Eggleston: Who can still keep it going.
- 57:01Phil: I, I do too.
- 57:03Tad Eggleston: And when it's micro.
- 57:04Phil: And this is where I'll say that, you know, I think… I think that you hyperfixating on… on comics, which ends up being… it's like… it's like an access point to everything else in the universe, you know? Because of how wide a medium comics is.
- 57:20Tad Eggleston: Like, that's what my hyperfixations on music, comics, and baseball have in common, is they take me all over the world, and they give me analogies for almost anything.
- 57:33Phil: Exactly, there we go, and, and…
- 57:36Phil: The difference… this is… this is a personal taste thing. I think that part of why I feel like it would…
- 57:43Tad Eggleston: I don't know if I would ever get tired of talking to you, you know? It's one of those things where your knowledge… Well, thank you. There are definitely people who do. And that… that's… There are people in my own family who have.
- 57:53Phil: It's their loss, you know? They don't realize what they have in front of them. It's definitely their loss. Probably. I think at some point, you'll realize that I have scripts, and you've heard most of them.
- 58:03Tad Eggleston: I mean, I do write new ones, but I think Tyler even… even occasionally realized, Tad, Tad, you've told this one before.
- 58:10Tad Eggleston: You know what?
- 58:11Phil: Speaking to someone who likes to tell the same story from 20 years ago as many times as he can about, my grandpa and, his feelings about eggs, you know? Yeah, then it's one of those things that I appreciate that, and I also think that, you know.
- 58:28Phil: it's just… it's one of those things where someone who hyperfixates on Spider-Man, I feel like there's an endpoint there, you know? Like, eventually…
- 58:37Phil: Eventually, it turns into a wall. I think it does. I think that at a certain point, a hyperfixation on Spider-Man could… could…
- 58:44Phil: Cut someone off.
- 58:46Tad Eggleston: I mean, I, I, I, well, I mean…
- 58:49Tad Eggleston: Possibly, but… but… but… I mean, what I think the bigger problem is when you're hyperfixating on a character is… is…
- 58:57Tad Eggleston: is, when somebody does something with a character you don't like, it can…
- 59:03Phil: I could see that, yeah.
- 59:05Tad Eggleston: It, it does… It would be surly.
- 59:06Phil: Yeah, it tends to warp things more than, like, a broad interest does.
- 59:12Tad Eggleston: feel like you have a vested interest in that character, like, you… How dare you do that?
- 59:16Tyler Johnson: How dare you write this?
- 59:18Phil: Yeah.
- 59:18Tyler Johnson: this way.
- 59:19Tad Eggleston: You've only written 10… 10 issues. I've read 6,000 issues.
- 59:24Phil: right, those.
- 59:25Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 59:26Tyler Johnson: Yeah, you start to feel like you're a shot caller, and you're like, maybe.
- 59:30Tad Eggleston: I mean, it, it's… I mean, in, in, in…
- 59:34Tad Eggleston: not the same episode, but another episode of Big Bang that we watched yesterday was the one where Sheldon was trying to start his own Comic-Con because they hadn't gotten tickets to Comic-Con. And he's on the phone with Robert Downey's publicist, or whatever, and he's like.
- 59:51Tad Eggleston: I watched 2 hours… or I watched Iron Man 2, that means he owes me at least 2 hours of his time, and I'm like, no…
- 1:00:00Phil: Oh…
- 1:00:01Tad Eggleston: Can you imagine if everybody who watched Iron Man 2 got 2 hours of Robert Downey?
- 1:00:07Phil: He'd still be busy!
- 1:00:09Phil: He'd still be busy, to this day, you know, just…
- 1:00:12Tad Eggleston: You got your two hours of Robert Downey's time. You didn't like it.
- 1:00:16Phil: It's a different thing. Yeah. I'd also argue that, like, well… oh, goodness, I mean…
- 1:00:22Tyler Johnson: I thought Iron Man 3 was worse.
- 1:00:26Phil: I mean, I like 3 a little bit more than 2, if only because 2 was like, let's do Iron Man again, with more lasers this time.
- 1:00:37Phil: Let's put more suits in it, you know? The thing they were planning to do from the beginning.
- 1:00:42Tad Eggleston: And honestly, I like them both, but I also have never thought that.
- 1:00:50Phil: That it entitled you to 2 hours of Robert Downey Jr.'s time?
- 1:00:53Tad Eggleston: Well, no, but where I was really gonna go is that,
- 1:01:00Tad Eggleston: There have been very few Marvel movies.
- 1:01:04Tad Eggleston: Dead.
- 1:01:06Tad Eggleston: Have been more than an… Average trade paperback.
- 1:01:12Phil: Oh yeah, that's fair.
- 1:01:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah, so, so, so, like…
- 1:01:15Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 1:01:16Tad Eggleston: People outside of…
- 1:01:19Phil: serious comic reading.
- 1:01:21Tad Eggleston: Like, oh my god, this is amazing, and then they start judging them based… against each other.
- 1:01:28Phil: Yeah.
- 1:01:28Tad Eggleston: Because…
- 1:01:32Tad Eggleston: they still haven't realized that the comics are better. I mean, it really kind of drives me with the wall, because, like, everybody seems to know that the book is always better than the movie, but so few people are willing to believe that the comic is better than the movie.
- 1:01:47Phil: I… I'm gonna make… I'm gonna make a controversial claim here, and I'm… I'm gonna say that I think Captain America Civil War is a better movie than Civil War, the comic.
- 1:02:01Phil: Like, the entire Civil War, like, across all of the tie-ins? Like, I'm talking about… I'm talking about Civil War by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven.
- 1:02:10Phil: Yup.
- 1:02:11Tad Eggleston: And just the miniseries.
- 1:02:12Phil: Just that many series.
- 1:02:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I don't think that's controversial, because, I mean, that…
- 1:02:18Tad Eggleston: One of the things that makes Civil War… the event…
- 1:02:24Tad Eggleston: so special?
- 1:02:26Tad Eggleston: Is it's one of few times where the tie-ins were… were…
- 1:02:32Tad Eggleston: better than what they were tying into. Yeah. And what they were tying into wasn't bad.
- 1:02:39Phil: Right.
- 1:02:39Tad Eggleston: just an anchor.
- 1:02:40Phil: Yes, and that's…
- 1:02:42Phil: Not to get us into this Civil War wormhole, but I haven't been able… I mean, it was an event that I only experienced through Osmosis, through seeing posters of it while playing Magic Tournaments, and thinking, oh, that's kind of neat, that's an interesting idea.
- 1:02:57Phil: And then trying to read it through trades of… I've never been able to get into it. You know, I imagine if I had, like, a giant pile of single issues of all the various tie-ins of various important.
- 1:03:10Tad Eggleston: Or even digital ones, I mean, because it's that, like, really works best.
- 1:03:16Tad Eggleston: If you do it in order.
- 1:03:18Phil: Exactly, that's the other thing, is that…
- 1:03:20Tad Eggleston: I'd have to look… Did they even do their omnibuses in… in…
- 1:03:26Phil: I have to hope that when they do those omnibuses of, like, here's an event, and every single tie-in, that they do it in some form of publication order, or at least.
- 1:03:34Tad Eggleston: I mean, I know, I know, and it's, it's… oh, it looks like there isn't…
- 1:03:39Tyler Johnson: Oh. I don't think so.
- 1:03:40Tad Eggleston: Vietnam.
- 1:03:41Phil: You know?
- 1:03:42Tad Eggleston: Jack.
- 1:03:42Phil: And… and that's… that's where… I… I guess this is to… to…
- 1:03:47Phil: Rejoin us to our great responsibility.
- 1:03:49Tad Eggleston: box set.
- 1:03:51Phil: Oh, there we go. Not one omnibus, but a whole box set. I'm actually thankful.
- 1:03:55Tad Eggleston: I'm, I'm, I'm curious as to, to how… They set it up.
- 1:04:02Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:04:03Tad Eggleston: Because, like, I thought that that was totally something that was done… really well.
- 1:04:11Tad Eggleston: with the Hickman X-Men, that they released it… Yes.
- 1:04:16Phil: Oh, yeah. And then they collected it.
- 1:04:17Tad Eggleston: Reading order is a collected reading order.
- 1:04:19Phil: Yes.
- 1:04:22Phil: could theoretically read it like one giant series between all the X books.
- 1:04:26Tyler Johnson: Shameless plug, I have… I have Civil War and all of the tie-ins at my store. The Nexus Vault in La Verne, Minnesota.
- 1:04:35Phil: Bum, ba-ba-bum!
- 1:04:36Tyler Johnson: Yeah, anyway, I was having a conversation with someone yesterday about this. My partner, he was going through them while we were pricing and whatnot, and he was like, there are so many Civil War things. And I said, yeah, and all we got was a 3-hour movie.
- 1:04:51Phil: Haha, yep, somehow.
- 1:04:53Phil: Goodness. But yeah, I was just gonna say, I'm thankful to feel like I have a… I am really happy right now with my connection to comics and, you know, the series I'm reading right now. I'd like to keep reading a little bit more, keep increasing that, but
- 1:05:11Phil: I feel like it's at a really good place, and to finally feel disconnected from event comics, because that was what…
- 1:05:21Phil: an event by one of my favorite writers was what had me step away from superheroes, because I was like, well, I can either afford just this, or I can afford to read indie series by all these people, and I went that way. So, it's, you know, it's one of those things that…
- 1:05:37Phil: I… I appreciate superheroes for, you know, getting people in the door, getting people to look at the medium. If anyone listening to this at this point was a huge Marvel movie fanatic and hasn't dug into comics yet, first of all, I don't know how you've found our podcast, but thank you. Second of all, please, please take the plunge. You know, there's… there's no bad place to start. It's like an ocean. Just dive in and find what interests.
- 1:06:02Phil: you. But yeah, yeah, civil War.
- 1:06:07Tad Eggleston: toss out that, Comic Book Herald, as they often do, has a great
- 1:06:12Tad Eggleston: Should've known. Comic Book Herald was great for that.
- 1:06:15Tad Eggleston: for Civil War.
- 1:06:17Tad Eggleston: And, and see, like, the… and as I'm glancing at it, and I haven't…
- 1:06:23Tad Eggleston: It's been a while since I read the event. This is, I think.
- 1:06:28Tad Eggleston: I'm pretty certain, roughly, the order that I would read it in, and the issues that that…
- 1:06:35Tad Eggleston: One should definitely…
- 1:06:37Phil: Yeah.
- 1:06:37Tad Eggleston: Catch, that there are a handful of things that… that are…
- 1:06:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah, see, or no, I guess it has some Punisher.
- 1:06:45Tad Eggleston: I don't… I don't even know if this has everything that has Civil War at the top of it. I think this is the…
- 1:06:53Tad Eggleston: The… Specific stuff, and then there are separate lines.
- 1:07:03Phil: Wow. 4.
- 1:07:06Tyler Johnson: for each title.
- 1:07:07Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:07:08Phil: Yep.
- 1:07:10Phil: That is…
- 1:07:11Tad Eggleston: That's… that's the thing, is, like… Civil War had… some of…
- 1:07:23Tad Eggleston: The best creators in comics at the time.
- 1:07:29Tad Eggleston: For sure. They're working in sync together.
- 1:07:32Tyler Johnson: For sure.
- 1:07:33Tad Eggleston: No.
- 1:07:34Tad Eggleston: Millar, and Fraction, and Bendis, and Remender, and, like… The list goes on.
- 1:07:42Phil: Remember was around for Civil War? I didn't… I didn't know who wanted.
- 1:07:45Tad Eggleston: say he did the… I could be wrong. I thought he was.
- 1:07:51Tad Eggleston: Cause I thought he had the…
- 1:07:54Tad Eggleston: I thought that was part of his Punisher run.
- 1:07:57Phil: I think his Punisher run started with… er… actually, no, it didn't start… it took a turn with Dark Rain, so yeah.
- 1:08:07Phil: I know that. So… It might have been, like, close to it, or right after it, even.
- 1:08:18Phil: Yeah, okay, yeah, so it does say that E…
- 1:08:22Phil: Right, he co-wrote Punisher War Journal Vol. 2 with Fraction and art by Howard Chaikin, so yeah, I do think you're right there, because it goes…
- 1:08:31Tad Eggleston: You'll get that.
- 1:08:32Phil: Damn.
- 1:08:33Tad Eggleston: I didn't even remember that Chaikin was involved.
- 1:08:36Phil: Right? Holy cow. Poor Howard. Poor Howard.
- 1:08:40Tad Eggleston: Oh…
- 1:08:41Phil: I mean…
- 1:08:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I mean, it's just… Again, like…
- 1:08:51Tad Eggleston: I agree with you that the movie is better than the seven-issue series. Not a doubt.
- 1:08:59Tad Eggleston: But…
- 1:09:06Tad Eggleston: Oh, no, that's just the second issue.
- 1:09:09Phil: So here's a quick question for you guys. Has there been a, like, superhero event series like this that you've been able to get into and appreciate after the fact? Because I've always found that it's.
- 1:09:19Tad Eggleston: Oh, I did this after the fact.
- 1:09:21Phil: Okay, okay.
- 1:09:23Phil: So you invent the rest?
- 1:09:24Tad Eggleston: after the fact. Okay, so you… Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:26Phil: Gotcha, interesting.
- 1:09:27Tad Eggleston: I started… No Man's Land in real time, but I finished it years later.
- 1:09:37Tad Eggleston: Starting again from the beginning.
- 1:09:40Tad Eggleston: Almost all event series.
- 1:09:42Tad Eggleston: I do have the fact.
- 1:09:44Tyler Johnson: I did, The Green Lantern… .
- 1:09:50Phil: Blackest Knight.
- 1:09:51Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I did that in real time, and then afterwards decided, holy cow, I didn't need to buy all those hardcovers.
- 1:10:01Tyler Johnson: So it's kind of the opposite, Phil.
- 1:10:03Phil: Yeah, that's funny, that was the first event, when I was getting into, single issues. That was the first one that I was around for.
- 1:10:10Tyler Johnson: Oh, okay.
- 1:10:11Phil: Yeah, so I kind of… I kept… I went through just the main line of reading Blackest Knight and Green Lantern, and then a couple of the tie-ins here and there, and ultimately, I enjoyed it. You know, I stuck with it. You know, kept reading Green Lantern until Geoff Johns wrapped up.
- 1:10:30Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:10:31Phil: Yeah. But.
- 1:10:31Tyler Johnson: They did a… they did a whole hardcover, like, series with all the…
- 1:10:36Phil: Yeah.
- 1:10:36Tyler Johnson: Oh, I… I have them all, you know?
- 1:10:39Phil: I was gonna say, it definitely seems like that was an event that… it's so funny how it started out with them being like, oh, we're not gonna have too many tie-ins, because Final Crisis just did that, and then in hindsight, it's like, oh no, that… but it started being successful, so then they were like, alright, everybody, we need to get those tie-ins pumping again.
- 1:10:58Tad Eggleston: I read Final Crisis after the fact, too.
- 1:11:01Tyler Johnson: Yeah, Sam. Me too.
- 1:11:02Tad Eggleston: well.
- 1:11:02Phil: that's a… that's one that, yes, just picking up the trade of Final Crisis, I… I really, I really enjoyed it.
- 1:11:07Tad Eggleston: I wrote House of… a Red House of M after the fact.
- 1:11:11Tyler Johnson: Shame.
- 1:11:12Tyler Johnson: Yeah, House of Emily.
- 1:11:13Tad Eggleston: But again, with all of these, I didn't just read…
- 1:11:16Tad Eggleston: the central event comic. I mean, like, I…
- 1:11:20Tyler Johnson: You, you, I mean, absorb.
- 1:11:21Tad Eggleston: This is the advantage of having things like Marvel Unlimited and…
- 1:11:25Phil: Boom.
- 1:11:25Tad Eggleston: DC Universe, I actually, like, read through the reading guides.
- 1:11:30Phil: Interesting.
- 1:11:31Tad Eggleston: Going through EVERYTHING.
- 1:11:34Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 1:11:36Tyler Johnson: Huh.
- 1:11:37Tad Eggleston: Because that's pretty much how I decide to do it. Like, I wait until people that I trust start talking about the event afterwards.
- 1:11:47Tad Eggleston: And if it's getting lots of traction.
- 1:11:52Tad Eggleston: I'm way more likely to kind of go back and put it together and read it.
- 1:11:57Tad Eggleston: than I would have been… Otherwise.
- 1:12:00Phil: Interesting. Alright.
- 1:12:02Tad Eggleston: So… Anything else we're thankful for before we move on to books we hope will be spectacular?
- 1:12:08Tyler Johnson: I'm good.
- 1:12:10Tad Eggleston: Tyler, do you have any specifics that you know are coming up that you're looking forward to?
- 1:12:17Tyler Johnson: No, unfortunately, as far as, like, my own personal collection, and reading, like, I've been…
- 1:12:25Tyler Johnson: it's weird, because I've switched into business mode, so I… it's hard for me to look for stuff personally.
- 1:12:33Tad Eggleston: But, but, but…
- 1:12:35Tyler Johnson: I mean, you get to hope it will be spectacular sales. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:41Phil: There we go.
- 1:12:42Tad Eggleston: Interesting. This was a week where, where, I did lots of doubling up.
- 1:12:48Tad Eggleston: Though, though, and actually, I need to… I need to move another one into…
- 1:12:53Tyler Johnson: The red shirts looked good. I ordered that, Star Trek red shirts. Chris Cantwell.
- 1:12:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I need to… I need to move another one into the books I know are spectacular really quick.
- 1:13:05Tad Eggleston: Cause I read… Zach Kaplan's…
- 1:13:11Tad Eggleston: Kill All Immortals 2 last night.
- 1:13:14Tad Eggleston: I think it's Fico Osseo.
- 1:13:18Tad Eggleston: Isafico Asio on that book?
- 1:13:20Tad Eggleston: Any good… anybody gonna beat me to it?
- 1:13:23Phil: I'm not sure. I, I.
- 1:13:26Tyler Johnson: Hold on.
- 1:13:29Phil: I'm a little familiar with it. Tyler is typing on some sort of hologram keyboard.
- 1:13:35Tad Eggleston: Colossio.
- 1:13:35Phil: Tony Stark, right? There you go.
- 1:13:40Tad Eggleston: So, things I know are spectacular. Death Dog No. 2 from Bryce Ingman and Alex Robinson at Ahoy. I particularly love this series because the word that the dog uses
- 1:13:57Tad Eggleston: to me, like, one of the premises is that… because these are kind of robot dogs, but they were… they were built with, like, human DNA, or not human, dog DNA, so they got lots of dog tendencies, but they were also programmed to have, like, 100-word vocabulary so that they could…
- 1:14:15Tad Eggleston: Because they're like, futuristic guard dog, blah blah blah.
- 1:14:19Tad Eggleston: But… So, the dog in question is one that had been…
- 1:14:28Tad Eggleston: Designed to kind of actually have its own personality.
- 1:14:32Tad Eggleston: And the word… that becomes its catch-all word to mean… have you guys seen, Donnie Brasco?
- 1:14:40Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 1:14:41Tad Eggleston: you know how there's that scene, they're always saying, forget about it. What does forget about it mean? And he's like, well, I mean, it depends on the context. Sometimes.
- 1:14:50Tad Eggleston: Sometimes. So, the word for this dog that can mean all sorts of things, depending on the context and intonation and whatnot.
- 1:14:58Tad Eggleston: is potato.
- 1:15:01Tad Eggleston: I remember that.
- 1:15:02Tad Eggleston: Which is my dog.
- 1:15:04Tad Eggleston: So…
- 1:15:07Phil: So now your dog is part robot guard dog.
- 1:15:09Tad Eggleston: Yeah, something like that.
- 1:15:10Phil: nice.
- 1:15:12Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, no, because it's not the dog's name, it's.
- 1:15:16Phil: method.
- 1:15:16Tad Eggleston: The dog says. It's what the dog says.
- 1:15:19Tad Eggleston: To mean all sorts of things.
- 1:15:21Phil: Okay.
- 1:15:22Tad Eggleston: Potato means I love you, potato means… Hey, look out!
- 1:15:28Phil: Nice.
- 1:15:29Tad Eggleston: So, yeah, Death Dog number 2 from Bryce Engman and Allen Robinson at Ahoy. Kill All Mortals 2 from Zach Kaplan and Fico Asio at Dark Horse, in, in, like.
- 1:15:41Tad Eggleston: Wonderful, synchronicity.
- 1:15:45Tad Eggleston: Paul Popes, book that… that…
- 1:15:50Tad Eggleston: He loves, that not enough other people had read, was, part of a…
- 1:15:58Tad Eggleston: book that… that Fanographics published is next week, called The Magnificent Adventure, The Perils of Giuseppe Bergman by Milo Minara, that had been previously out of print for…
- 1:16:09Phil: Like, 20…
- 1:16:10Tad Eggleston: 5 years, so, so, like…
- 1:16:13Tad Eggleston: when he said it, he didn't think it would be easy for me to read it, and then I was able to shoot him a text and go, hey, Paul, is it this one? He's like, it is! That's amazing! And Phanographic sent me a reader PDF for it, so I can say that it is, in fact, very amazing.
- 1:16:30Tad Eggleston: Trigger Warning, a Strangers in Paradise story from Terry Moore at Abstract Studio, was sent out with his last Kickstarter as well, so I can also,
- 1:16:41Tad Eggleston: Totally.
- 1:16:42Tad Eggleston: say that it was amazing. But otherwise, this was one of those weeks where I had to cheat a little bit.
- 1:16:48Tad Eggleston: Because, Chris Cantwell has two books coming out. Briar Knight's Terror No. 1,
- 1:16:57Tad Eggleston: with Alex Lintz from Boom.
- 1:17:00Tad Eggleston: Finally getting to finish the story the way he wanted to?
- 1:17:03Tad Eggleston: And Star Trek Redshirts number 5, with Megan Levins at IDW, take my one spot. Giant-sized criminal number one from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips takes my two spot. I'm always happy to have more criminal.
- 1:17:18Tad Eggleston: And how crazy is it that Matt Kint, with two books from Bad Idea, still can't be in front of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips as much as I love Matt Kint and Bad Idea?
- 1:17:31Tad Eggleston: Save Now, number 2, Save Now number 1 was amazing. They're All Terrible, number 3, from Matt, the Save Now's from Matt Kint and Thomas Ciarillo, and They're All Terrible is Matt Kint and Ramon Villilobos. Both are from Bad Idea, and I fully expect them to be spectacular, but I have not read them, so right now we're gonna say Hope.
- 1:17:52Tad Eggleston: Also, the collected edition of I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer by Doug Wagner and Daniel Hilliard.
- 1:18:00Tad Eggleston: And I should have scrolled down further.
- 1:18:03Phil: I have a backup. It's okay. no, you can talk about it! I'll shut up now.
- 1:18:09Phil: I haven't read it, so that was my hopeful, like, I should read this one, you know, this is the.
- 1:18:13Tad Eggleston: You should.
- 1:18:13Phil: pick. I should beat this one.
- 1:18:14Tyler Johnson: It's so good. Yeah. But, you know, go back and read, plastic and Vinyl? Yeah, because this character, if you want her backstory, you really…
- 1:18:24Tad Eggleston: final.
- 1:18:25Tyler Johnson: She's in vinyl, yep.
- 1:18:27Phil: Okay. Interesting.
- 1:18:28Tyler Johnson: So…
- 1:18:29Tad Eggleston: I mean, really, any…
- 1:18:30Tyler Johnson: They are not… they don't really…
- 1:18:32Tad Eggleston: And Daniel Hilliard, you should just… Oh, yeah.
- 1:18:35Phil: I need to. He sounds delightfully fucked up, in, in a way I would enjoy…
- 1:18:40Tad Eggleston: That's the… that's the…
- 1:18:42Phil: Absolute best way to put it. Yeah, that's delightfully fucked up. You guys have… you guys have talked about him enough, and I… because, like, I saw the covers of the books, I was like, those look really interesting, but how much you guys have talked about, I'm like, okay, I need to… I need to start reading this guy.
- 1:18:54Tad Eggleston: him.
- 1:18:55Phil: Talk about him, with him, to him, all the time.
- 1:18:58Tyler Johnson: Doug and I, follow each other on social media. He sends me, like, happy birthday when it's my birthday. I mean.
- 1:19:06Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 1:19:06Tyler Johnson: It's critical.
- 1:19:07Phil: Mench.
- 1:19:07Tyler Johnson: He's so nice. He's such a nice guy.
- 1:19:10Phil: I love the tradition of people who make disturbing art being absolute gems of people to talk to.
- 1:19:18Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 1:19:18Phil: Yeah.
- 1:19:19Tyler Johnson: John… John Lees from,
- 1:19:22Tad Eggleston: Also…
- 1:19:23Tyler Johnson: Yep, him also. He's just so screwed up to get… Orla, that's his book.
- 1:19:28Phil: Oh, yeah, I need to catch up on.
- 1:19:29Tyler Johnson: But he is such a great guy. He's really into swimming, so he'll talk to you about lap swimming, and so it's really fun.
- 1:19:38Tad Eggleston: Alex Cormac.
- 1:19:39Tad Eggleston: Yeah, with Neil Clyde.
- 1:19:44Phil: So, in addition, my backup after, I was a fashion school serial killer was, I just saw they're putting out another, another edition, another printing, probably paperback, of… yeah, it is paperback, of The Private Eye by Brian K. Vaughan, Marcos Martin, and… Martin. Martin, thank you, and
- 1:20:03Phil: Months of incent.
- 1:20:05Phil: Which… Martine. Martine, yes, which is a book I absolutely love. I've had it on my shelf behind me. It's so good. I need to reread it. I feel… I'm feeling compelled to reread it now.
- 1:20:17Tad Eggleston: I have it.
- 1:20:18Phil: Yeah.
- 1:20:19Tad Eggleston: barrier.
- 1:20:20Phil: Yeah, I have Barrier 2. I haven't read that one, but I have the single issues that came out, so, I know, I have… I have a lot of books that I need to read. It's, you know, it's a dang shame.
- 1:20:31Tad Eggleston: Thank you.
- 1:20:32Tad Eggleston: But, but yeah, no, I read… I mean… I have… I have a crap ton of books that I need to read.
- 1:20:38Phil: I was one where I picked it up as it was coming out on Panel Syndicate. It was, you know, and absolutely loved it, absolutely adored it.
- 1:20:45Tad Eggleston: Tyler, you're the retailer now. Which is bigger, a crap ton or a metric crap ton?
- 1:20:51Tyler Johnson: I think a metric crap ton.
- 1:20:54Phil: Then I have a metric crap ton of books that I own and haven't read yet. The standard crap ton, it just doesn't hit the same.
- 1:21:01Tyler Johnson: Guys, okay, I'm gonna move my camera, and I'll show you my pile size, okay?
- 1:21:05Tyler Johnson: Right here… oh, you can't really see the height of it.
- 1:21:09Phil: Boom.
- 1:21:10Tad Eggleston: Is that on the floor?
- 1:21:12Tyler Johnson: No, it's on.
- 1:21:13Phil: Oh my goodness.
- 1:21:14Tad Eggleston: Okay, then you're nowhere near.
- 1:21:15Tyler Johnson: It's about 4 inches high.
- 1:21:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that's, that's, that's, like, Tyler.
- 1:21:22Phil: 4 inches of pile? I was gonna say, I have piles of piles.
- 1:21:25Tad Eggleston: I have 8 inches right next to me, and that's, like, not even the tip of my iceberg.
- 1:21:34Tyler Johnson: I know, I… I used to be so good about reading week in and week out.
- 1:21:41Tad Eggleston: So… Tyler, you wanna take us out?
- 1:21:48Tyler Johnson: Yeah, guys, thanks for listening. Hopefully I will be back soon. We're gonna be doing all kinds of fun episodes that I want to be included on. But…
- 1:21:59Tyler Johnson: Thanks for listening, and we'll catch you guys after the next page.
- 1:22:04Tyler Johnson: Bingo!
