- 0:03Speaker 1: Ton Fither. You ever seen those notes where it's like, oh,
- 0:06Speaker 1: this team has had eighty different lineup combinations this year.
- 0:10Speaker 1: You're like, damn, how have they done so many different
- 0:13Speaker 1: lineup combos? This is a new lineup combo today.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:17Speaker 3: I've been a part of a couple of teams like
- 0:18Speaker 3: that too. So I just remember at the end of
- 0:20Speaker 3: the year they were saying, like, dude, you bad it
- 0:22Speaker 3: everywhere in the lineup except leadoff, and I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 0:25Speaker 3: you're actually right.
- 0:26Speaker 2: So yeah, I've been a part of a couple though.
- 0:28Speaker 2: It's a good way.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Yeah, did you get a chance to lead?
- 0:33Speaker 4: You get one?
- 0:33Speaker 3: Thought one game? Every single one. I've been one through nine.
- 0:41Speaker 4: I would honestly say I think I probably had two.
- 0:44Speaker 4: And obviously the part in the middle of the order
- 0:47Speaker 4: was more out of necessity at some point. But I
- 0:49Speaker 4: spent most of my time kind of reading the lineup,
- 0:51Speaker 4: you know, reverse I was kind of dyslexic when it
- 0:54Speaker 4: came to the lineup. I had to read from the
- 0:55Speaker 4: bottom to the top.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Hey, hey, Scott, I'm going to ask you this, but
- 0:59Speaker 3: I KP is gonna know if you're batting nine, who's
- 1:04Speaker 3: batting in front of you?
- 1:07Speaker 1: Is this a trick question?
- 1:09Speaker 4: No, just what's your answer?
- 1:12Speaker 2: Who would be batting front? Yeah, if you're in front
- 1:14Speaker 2: of you?
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah, the front behind in front of you before you.
- 1:25Speaker 3: You're thinking about it, KP. Who's hitting in front of
- 1:30Speaker 3: your dog?
- 1:31Speaker 4: Everyone?
- 1:32Speaker 3: Everybody. It's just the fact you go to the score.
- 1:36Speaker 3: It's just a baseball lingo thing. You go to score
- 1:38Speaker 3: with the nine and the coaches. I phrase, you're sending
- 1:39Speaker 3: in front of you. Everybody's hitting in front of me.
- 1:43Speaker 3: That's all I knew. You would take it literal and
- 1:46Speaker 3: you were trying to decipher, but it was It was funny.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I was like, is there some hidden message in here?
- 1:51Speaker 2: No?
- 1:52Speaker 1: No, unless unless you play it or you know the lingo.
- 1:55Speaker 1: It's everybody, baby.
- 1:57Speaker 4: I spent I spent a couple of I wouldn't say years,
- 2:00Speaker 4: as I spend a majority of time in my career
- 2:02Speaker 4: battling between someone else and being the butt of that joke.
- 2:05Speaker 4: We'un out. We'd run the you know, before they would
- 2:08Speaker 4: send out the lineup, you go check the lineup in
- 2:11Speaker 4: the clubhouse or in the dugout. We'd run over it
- 2:13Speaker 4: to and be like, oh, yeah, I'm eight today, not nine.
- 2:15Speaker 4: So who's in front of you. Buddy, that's good.
- 2:19Speaker 2: That's good.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I like that. Well, this combination has never happened before,
- 2:23Speaker 1: so that's how it came about. We got a little
- 2:26Speaker 1: former met action, but they didn't play together on the
- 2:29Speaker 1: Mets at the same time. Todd Father and Kevin Pullar
- 2:32Speaker 1: first time together on the show. You guys a lot
- 2:34Speaker 1: of pressure. You ready to carry it?
- 2:37Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll carry it.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Okay. Well, of course we're going to start with a
- 2:41Speaker 1: trade that involves one of the most confusing first names
- 2:46Speaker 1: in baseball, So let's hit it. Jose Tinsen Garcia Boom.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I said it, But from now on after that, I'm
- 2:56Speaker 1: calling him what everyone calls him, and that's the password.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Red Sox fans know him well. He's barely touched the
- 3:02Speaker 1: majors so far, but there are high expectations for him.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Very physical moves over to the Pittsburgh Pirates along with
- 3:10Speaker 1: right handed pitching prospect Jesus Travoso, and the Pirates send
- 3:15Speaker 1: Johann Oviedo out to Boston. Nice little pickup for the
- 3:19Speaker 1: Red Sox, very physical, big pitcher KP. Here's the whole
- 3:23Speaker 1: trade breakdown, and I'll start with you. Because of all
- 3:26Speaker 1: of the teams that you could have selected the other
- 3:29Speaker 1: day to try and de cipher what they're going to
- 3:31Speaker 1: do in the offseason, you actually chose the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 3:34Speaker 1: So does this track with what you had them doing
- 3:38Speaker 1: this offseason? I mean it's something.
- 3:41Speaker 4: I mean, we spent a little bit time talking about
- 3:43Speaker 4: some of the young pitchers that they have, and they
- 3:46Speaker 4: didn't get an opportunity to start and there in the bullpen.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Maybe this kind of gives them a clear path to
- 3:50Speaker 4: go out and start. You know, maybe they're subtracting from
- 3:52Speaker 4: an area where they feel like they have a strength
- 3:54Speaker 4: in some of the starting pitching, filling out some of
- 3:57Speaker 4: the other positions they need to go out and get.
- 4:00Speaker 4: They still are not going out and signing someone to
- 4:03Speaker 4: a multiple year deal, which I talked about when I
- 4:06Speaker 4: selected the Pittsburgh Pirates that they were going to do
- 4:08Speaker 4: one year deals. But if they were able to go
- 4:10Speaker 4: out and get a you know, a guy who's already
- 4:12Speaker 4: been given the name the password to go room the
- 4:15Speaker 4: outfield for the next five or six years, it's something.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think you hit it perfectly because I'm
- 4:22Speaker 3: sitting here it's like, okay, like this wasn't something that I,
- 4:28Speaker 3: you know, was saying this was going to happen, or hey,
- 4:30Speaker 3: get ready for this trade, Like I I okay, you know,
- 4:34Speaker 3: I don't know. Maybe it's a trade for them to
- 4:36Speaker 3: be like, hey listen, we did something. Yeah, we you know,
- 4:39Speaker 3: we worked this offseason. Well, you know, I don't know
- 4:42Speaker 3: how it's gonna help your team. Yeah, it's gonna help.
- 4:44Speaker 3: But it's not the big trade. It's the pirates. They
- 4:47Speaker 3: this is what they do. They gave up a picture
- 4:49Speaker 3: who's known, who's been out there before, who's actually pretty good.
- 4:53Speaker 3: You know, he has his times where he struggles a
- 4:55Speaker 3: little bit, but for the Red Sox, it's a stable pitcher.
- 4:58Speaker 3: He's healthy, he's gonna go out there and p and
- 5:00Speaker 3: do really well in a viedo. And you know, I
- 5:03Speaker 3: don't know. I I thought it was just whatever. It's
- 5:06Speaker 3: just it's just a trade. I mean, you got a
- 5:07Speaker 3: guy like the password. I mean, why do you call
- 5:09Speaker 3: him the password? Is it because it's he's top secret
- 5:12Speaker 3: and nobody knows about him. I don't know, So we'll
- 5:14Speaker 3: we'll find out.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Well, if you can spell his first name, then you
- 5:20Speaker 1: win a prize. Jost Y n XO N I'm with you, here,
- 5:28Speaker 1: Todd Father. The Pirates are in like I don't want
- 5:31Speaker 1: to say do or die mode, but it is that
- 5:33Speaker 1: way for their front office. They can't miss the playoffs again,
- 5:36Speaker 1: even though it is lofty that they would make the
- 5:38Speaker 1: playoffs otherwise, it's going to be a new front office.
- 5:40Speaker 1: So that's why it's interesting to me too. Garcia is young.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know how much of an impact
- 5:45Speaker 1: he's going to make on the major league club this year.
- 5:46Speaker 1: He's gonna be on the club, but unless you haven't pegged,
- 5:49Speaker 1: it's like the breakout rookie of the year. I'm expecting
- 5:52Speaker 1: a little bit more from them. And on the other side,
- 5:55Speaker 1: Johan Oviedo happens to be Eric Kratz's favorite pitcher for
- 5:58Speaker 1: the last like three four years since this show existed.
- 6:00Speaker 1: He's been talking him up and then he went down
- 6:03Speaker 1: for about half the time that this show has existed
- 6:05Speaker 1: because he had Tommy John surgery. Comes back this past
- 6:08Speaker 1: season nine starts about a three and a half thera
- 6:11Speaker 1: fastball shapes were better for him between his four seam
- 6:14Speaker 1: and two seam reading scattering reports. He's got big extension.
- 6:17Speaker 1: He's huge. He's six six ish to fifty throws hard,
- 6:22Speaker 1: gets swing and miss limits hard contact. So for Red
- 6:25Speaker 1: Sox fans, I think he should be fired up. I
- 6:28Speaker 1: don't think Garcia was going to be a big part
- 6:30Speaker 1: of the twenty six team, and you're trying to build
- 6:32Speaker 1: a contender, So I think the Red Sox get the
- 6:34Speaker 1: better end of this one. Again, Yeah, do we know
- 6:36Speaker 1: a ton about Garcia. We're not gonna act like where
- 6:38Speaker 1: the prospect experts. But wait, Baseball America is Jeff Ponce
- 6:42Speaker 1: knows all about these guys. Jeff take it away, all right, guys.
- 6:46Speaker 5: Big deal went down yesterday between the Red Sox and
- 6:49Speaker 5: the Pirates.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Five player trade.
- 6:52Speaker 5: Johann Oviedo, a major league pitcher that just returned from
- 6:55Speaker 5: Tommy John surgery last season, goes over to the Red Sox.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Of things, He's joined by a Donnis Guzman, who was
- 7:03Speaker 5: a fifth round pick this year out of Arizona. Was
- 7:06Speaker 5: with Boston College actually as a freshman, so somewhat familiar
- 7:10Speaker 5: with the area. Huge arm, great throwing catcher, a little
- 7:13Speaker 5: bit more questions around the bat. He did show a
- 7:16Speaker 5: little bit more impact and decent swing decisions this year.
- 7:19Speaker 5: The other play going to the Red Sox, Tyler Samonego
- 7:23Speaker 5: was another guy that was added to the forty man
- 7:25Speaker 5: roster this year, had some elbow troubles coming into twenty
- 7:29Speaker 5: twenty five, certainly showed enough, though it was in the
- 7:32Speaker 5: lower levels, to get added to the forty man roster.
- 7:35Speaker 5: He's a left hander with big stuff. Replaces some of
- 7:38Speaker 5: that left handed relief depth that the Red Sox have
- 7:41Speaker 5: lost this season between Brendan Bernardino and Chris Murphy going
- 7:45Speaker 5: to the White Sox on the other side, headed to
- 7:48Speaker 5: the Pirates, you have the pass where just Nixon Garcia
- 7:51Speaker 5: obviously maybe the most famous player in this trade.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I think he's the only guy that's had a Jeopardy question.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Big power bat, there's good bat to all skills there.
- 8:00Speaker 5: Where he gets in trouble is really over zealous swing decisions,
- 8:04Speaker 5: loves to swing the bat, loves to try to attack
- 8:06Speaker 5: any pitch that's even anywhere near the zone. You'll have
- 8:09Speaker 5: to tamp that down a little bit if he's going
- 8:11Speaker 5: to have success. Played primarily center field last year in
- 8:14Speaker 5: Portland and then in Tripa. A Wooster can probably handle
- 8:18Speaker 5: center field right now. Probably a corner outfield guy long term,
- 8:22Speaker 5: but a guy that could slot into the middle of
- 8:24Speaker 5: the Pirates order right now, and certainly probably an upgrade
- 8:27Speaker 5: over some of the defensive options that they currently roll
- 8:30Speaker 5: out there in the outfield.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Wow.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And we'll get more from jeffon Travioso coming up in
- 8:37Speaker 1: a moment. We're just splitting that up so we can
- 8:38Speaker 1: talk again here. So he thinks maybe middle of the
- 8:42Speaker 1: order outfielder a Pirates team that has to do serious
- 8:45Speaker 1: lineup upgrades.
- 8:46Speaker 2: It was the worst.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Offense in baseball this past season, and also for Boston,
- 8:51Speaker 1: Todd Father, they have too many outfielders. We've heard Jaron
- 8:54Speaker 1: Durand's name in trade rumors for like a year or
- 8:58Speaker 1: two at this point, and you look and you're like,
- 9:01Speaker 1: am I missing something? This is a very good first
- 9:03Speaker 1: division outfielder. It's just that they have a little bit
- 9:06Speaker 1: of a surplus. So Garcia was not going to be
- 9:09Speaker 1: able to find consistent playing time here unless there were
- 9:12Speaker 1: quite a few injuries.
- 9:14Speaker 3: And that makes sense, like when you have a guy
- 9:16Speaker 3: that's not going to play a lot who's a decent ballplayer,
- 9:19Speaker 3: what are you supposed to do with them? Oh, let's
- 9:21Speaker 3: hang them around and maybe you know something will happen.
- 9:24Speaker 3: They have, again, a surplus of battlefielders that they can use.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Why not trade a guy to get you know, a
- 9:30Speaker 3: decenter quality arm or anything else. That's what a smart
- 9:34Speaker 3: organization will do. Now we'll hang on. We're worried about
- 9:36Speaker 3: the injuries. Well, if you're worried about injuries, guess what, Yeah,
- 9:39Speaker 3: that might happen. But at the same time, you got
- 9:42Speaker 3: to go with you gut. It's a great plan. It's
- 9:44Speaker 3: a great, great job by them to figure this out.
- 9:48Speaker 3: You know, we'll talk more with somebody down the road
- 9:50Speaker 3: to how these trades get going and stuff like that.
- 9:52Speaker 3: But for me, don't wait. You saw what the Orioles did.
- 9:55Speaker 3: They had so many of these prospects. Now what they
- 9:58Speaker 3: got nothing out of it. You know, there's organizations that
- 10:01Speaker 3: do this all the time, and I just think it's
- 10:03Speaker 3: a very smart move by them, and you know, hopefully
- 10:05Speaker 3: it works out for both teams. Again, I'm not trying
- 10:07Speaker 3: to knock both, but when you've got a guy that's
- 10:09Speaker 3: not gonna able to play, help him out a little bit,
- 10:11Speaker 3: move him somewhere where.
- 10:12Speaker 2: He has a better opportunity.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I love your point too, because we
- 10:17Speaker 4: as an industry value prospects so much. But if they
- 10:20Speaker 4: don't have a place to play where you have a
- 10:21Speaker 4: surplus of them. Yeah, it's things when those guys go
- 10:24Speaker 4: other places and they end up being the player you
- 10:27Speaker 4: thought you were gonna get. But sometimes you've got to
- 10:30Speaker 4: gamble a little bit, and you got to you gotta
- 10:32Speaker 4: take away from areas that you have a surplus of
- 10:35Speaker 4: guys and go out and get some other players and
- 10:38Speaker 4: areas that you need. And you know, I'm looking at
- 10:40Speaker 4: Oviedo's numbers from twenty thirteen and the big thing that
- 10:44Speaker 4: stands out to me is he had thirty two games started,
- 10:47Speaker 4: one hundred and seventy seven innings. That's extremely valuable when
- 10:49Speaker 4: they're trying to fill out that back end of the rotation.
- 10:52Speaker 4: You know, not every team is fortunate enough to have
- 10:55Speaker 4: a rotation like the Seattle Mariners or the Dodgers or not.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Not all teams are gonna have of, you know, four
- 11:01Speaker 4: number one starters. Sometimes you just need to get guys
- 11:03Speaker 4: that can take the ball every fifth day, you know,
- 11:06Speaker 4: eat innings and give your team a chance to win.
- 11:08Speaker 4: So I love the trade, and hopefully this kind of
- 11:11Speaker 4: quiets down the Duran, you know, getting traded rumors because
- 11:15Speaker 4: I think he's a heck of a player. I think
- 11:17Speaker 4: he is kind of that catalyst for the Red Sox offense,
- 11:20Speaker 4: kind of hitting at the top of the order. He's
- 11:22Speaker 4: so fun to watch. I mean, he's a year where
- 11:25Speaker 4: maybe two years removed away from me in the All
- 11:27Speaker 4: Star Game, MVP didn't have the same caliber year last year,
- 11:31Speaker 4: but he's still so valuable to that team the way
- 11:34Speaker 4: he just plays with energy and he's found a nice
- 11:37Speaker 4: home in left field.
- 11:38Speaker 1: There great point also by Todd Father on how you
- 11:42Speaker 1: can't just hold on to all of these guys. He
- 11:44Speaker 1: got to start mixing it up and making trade. There's
- 11:47Speaker 1: Mikey saying it advanced. Stuff looks real good too from Oviedo.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I agree. I think it's going to be a big
- 11:52Speaker 1: pickup for the Red Sox if he's on the field.
- 11:54Speaker 1: And yeah, Armen cent, are they done with the rotation
- 11:57Speaker 1: now they added Gray and Oviedo. That's a good question,
- 11:59Speaker 1: really we could ask. I mean, I think some fans
- 12:02Speaker 1: still wanted like an ACE type or something. I don't
- 12:04Speaker 1: think they're going to spend on the market like that.
- 12:06Speaker 1: They spent their money on Garrett Crochet in terms of
- 12:09Speaker 1: giving him an extension. I think Red Sox fans are
- 12:11Speaker 1: still a little frustrated because they want the money to
- 12:13Speaker 1: be spent that makes up for what they gave up
- 12:17Speaker 1: with Rafael Devers. It almost was like a public promise,
- 12:19Speaker 1: We're going to spend that, But let me give the
- 12:21Speaker 1: Red Sox love for a second. They traded for Garrett
- 12:24Speaker 1: Crochet last year. I think the Orioles were in the running.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Two Red Sox won with their bid. How did that go?
- 12:30Speaker 1: They traded for a number one starter, top three in
- 12:33Speaker 1: the American League, picked him up, signed him to an extension.
- 12:37Speaker 1: That is exactly what player development is all about. You
- 12:40Speaker 1: get the guys that bit into your roster, and then
- 12:43Speaker 1: you take some risks and get rid of some others
- 12:45Speaker 1: and say I don't care what ends up happening to them,
- 12:47Speaker 1: because I just got a number one starter. The other
- 12:50Speaker 1: thing that the Red Sox just did, in addition to
- 12:52Speaker 1: trading the password is a guy who they found kind
- 12:55Speaker 1: of as a diamond in the rough. They didn't pay
- 12:58Speaker 1: much for him in terms of when they picked him
- 13:00Speaker 1: up as an international prospect, like he wasn't highly regarded.
- 13:02Speaker 1: His name's Hazus Travioso. Five to eleven, one hundred and
- 13:05Speaker 1: forty pounds. They signed him out a Venezuela for ten
- 13:07Speaker 1: thousand dollars in twenty twenty four. That's like basically as
- 13:10Speaker 1: low as it gets when you're doing those international signings.
- 13:12Speaker 1: So they found something here, and again we're looking at
- 13:15Speaker 1: the trade. I just want to queue up the second
- 13:17Speaker 1: part of what Jeff Pons from Baseball America is going
- 13:19Speaker 1: to bring to the mix, because BA is very high
- 13:22Speaker 1: on him, so Pirates fans could get excited the big
- 13:25Speaker 1: question mark.
- 13:25Speaker 5: And I think the guy that drew the most interest yesterday,
- 13:28Speaker 5: at least over on our site, which does focus on prospects,
- 13:31Speaker 5: is Jesus Traviso. Traviso was really really interesting. He's an
- 13:35Speaker 5: undersized right hander, but he's got huge stuff. Really really
- 13:39Speaker 5: good performance last year in the Florida Complex League. I
- 13:42Speaker 5: think he made thirty nine pits, thirty nine ing's there,
- 13:46Speaker 5: two point seventy seven ERA, fifty two strikeouts, twenty five walks.
- 13:51Speaker 5: As I mentioned, big velocity since ninety four to ninety six,
- 13:55Speaker 5: he'll ramp it up to one hundred miles an hour.
- 13:57Speaker 5: There's not a ton of bat missing traits there in
- 14:00Speaker 5: terms of shape, but the velocity does play his primary
- 14:03Speaker 5: pitch is actually a gyro slider eighty four to eighty
- 14:06Speaker 5: six miles an hour, really tight bullet spin. Loves throwing
- 14:09Speaker 5: that thing, throws it more than the four team commands
- 14:12Speaker 5: it better than he commands his fastball actually also throws
- 14:16Speaker 5: a sweeper that isn't very good and has a really
- 14:20Speaker 5: good change up as well that he kills. Lyft On
- 14:23Speaker 5: commands that pitch really well. Probably is an averager, better
- 14:26Speaker 5: pitch long term. So really interesting trade, I think from
- 14:29Speaker 5: the Pirates side and from the Red Sox side, and
- 14:32Speaker 5: it's a trade that could certainly have some impact in
- 14:34Speaker 5: the coming years.
- 14:41Speaker 1: FT senior insider Ken Rosenthal with the Inside Scoop, I
- 14:43Speaker 1: like this interesting trade, Ken, what are your thoughts? I
- 14:46Speaker 1: know you wrote also about the Pirates side, so if
- 14:48Speaker 1: you want to spend time there, we'll then get to Boston.
- 14:51Speaker 6: It was definitely an interesting trade, and I had heard
- 14:54Speaker 6: earlier in the off season that Oviedo was attracting Symtris.
- 14:57Speaker 6: There are some things that happened after he came back
- 14:59Speaker 6: from the injury. He's affordable, he is an intriguing guy,
- 15:04Speaker 6: so for the Red Sox to want him in addition
- 15:07Speaker 6: to Sonny Gray, that made sense. To me, and certainly
- 15:10Speaker 6: they liked the left hander that they got in the
- 15:12Speaker 6: deal as well, the left handed reliever. And then from
- 15:15Speaker 6: the Pirates perspective, Garcia the password is the kind of
- 15:19Speaker 6: guy that they should be taking a chance on.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Now.
- 15:21Speaker 6: There is swing and miss there, there is a little
- 15:23Speaker 6: bit of volatility there, but he's a good defender, a
- 15:26Speaker 6: good base runner, and if they can unlock him, if
- 15:29Speaker 6: they can kind of get him to reiin in his aggression,
- 15:32Speaker 6: they might have something there. And he certainly is a
- 15:34Speaker 6: guy that could fit into their long term future if
- 15:38Speaker 6: he proves to be the kind of player that they envision.
- 15:41Speaker 6: So it was a bit surprising to a lot of people.
- 15:45Speaker 6: I think that the Red Sox went and got another
- 15:47Speaker 6: starter after Sonny Gray because their focus now is seemingly offense.
- 15:52Speaker 6: But even with the young pitching that they have, even
- 15:55Speaker 6: with the depth that they have overall, I don't see
- 15:58Speaker 6: that it's ever a problem to add starting pitching. And
- 16:01Speaker 6: if they can maybe make another deal, package one of
- 16:05Speaker 6: those young starters with someone and get something else, all
- 16:09Speaker 6: the better.
- 16:11Speaker 4: He Ken Let's stay on the topic of the Pirates.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Right before Thanksgiving, we got to pick a team and
- 16:16Speaker 4: kind of put together a Thanksgiving plate of who we
- 16:19Speaker 4: think teams are going to go out and get in
- 16:22Speaker 4: free agency, and I happen to pick the Pirates, and
- 16:25Speaker 4: you know, I had to go kind of in the
- 16:27Speaker 4: middle of to the bottom of the free agent list.
- 16:29Speaker 4: This is kind of the list I came up with.
- 16:31Speaker 4: Is this the type of moves you kind of expect
- 16:33Speaker 4: the Pirates to make, be a trade or free agency
- 16:37Speaker 4: or we've heard rumors of them going out and maybe
- 16:39Speaker 4: spending some money this offseason. Are they going to play
- 16:41Speaker 4: near the top of you know, get some of those
- 16:43Speaker 4: guys at the top of the free agent list.
- 16:46Speaker 6: Actually, Kevin, those names are a little bit below where
- 16:50Speaker 6: I think they are aiming.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Now.
- 16:51Speaker 6: They ultimately might end up with guys like that. I
- 16:54Speaker 6: don't think they'll be at the top of the market
- 16:56Speaker 6: for Schwarber or anyone along those lines, even if they try,
- 17:00Speaker 6: because when you're a Kyle Schwarber or any kind of
- 17:03Speaker 6: elite player and you have better options, you're gonna choose
- 17:07Speaker 6: the better, more competitive options. So I don't see them there.
- 17:10Speaker 6: But guys like Ryan O'Hearn, Jorge Polanco, Okamudo from Japan,
- 17:14Speaker 6: those are the types of names I've heard with them.
- 17:17Speaker 6: There are also trades they can make for maybe a
- 17:19Speaker 6: Brandon Lao or Jeff McNeil. They are trying to get
- 17:23Speaker 6: one or two regulars and three or four other position
- 17:26Speaker 6: players that would be more depth pieces. The password kind
- 17:30Speaker 6: of qualifies in that latter category, as I wrote today.
- 17:33Speaker 6: So while those names you have there might ultimately be
- 17:38Speaker 6: where they end up, it seems to me they want
- 17:41Speaker 6: to do better than that. Those are the kinds of
- 17:42Speaker 6: names that they've gone after in the past one year guys.
- 17:46Speaker 6: They still may end up with one year guys, but
- 17:49Speaker 6: they are trying, it seems to do a little bit
- 17:51Speaker 6: better than that.
- 17:53Speaker 3: We're just talking about Boston and how they picked up Olviedo.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Sonny Gray is another guy, man. I mean you think
- 18:00Speaker 3: do you think the staff is starting to line up
- 18:01Speaker 3: a little bit better for this team? I mean there
- 18:03Speaker 3: were a playoff team last year. This only boosts them
- 18:06Speaker 3: to be exactly where they want to be. I know
- 18:08Speaker 3: they're trying to get more stuff. Do you see them
- 18:10Speaker 3: going after any more starting pitching or you think this
- 18:13Speaker 3: is it for them?
- 18:15Speaker 6: Well, Todd, I didn't think they were going to get
- 18:17Speaker 6: another starter after Sonny Gray, so I would be surprised
- 18:19Speaker 6: if they got one more. Now, you never know, and
- 18:22Speaker 6: certainly teams do all kinds of things and talk about
- 18:25Speaker 6: all kinds of things, some of which never come to
- 18:28Speaker 6: light and some of which do, but there are constantly
- 18:32Speaker 6: conversations going on. It would seem to me that their
- 18:35Speaker 6: focus now should be the bat, whether it's Bregman or
- 18:39Speaker 6: Alonso or both or someone else. That is where they
- 18:44Speaker 6: have to kind of get better at this point they
- 18:47Speaker 6: feel with Crochet at the top and Bao and of
- 18:51Speaker 6: course Sonny Gray and Patrick Sandoval coming off an injury,
- 18:54Speaker 6: Carter Crawford coming off an injury, Peyton Toley and some
- 18:58Speaker 6: of their other young pitchers that we've seen as well.
- 19:00Speaker 6: Early is another one. They feel that they're pretty deep
- 19:03Speaker 6: and they've got more coming. So I would be surprised
- 19:06Speaker 6: if they went after another starter. But again I was
- 19:09Speaker 6: surprised that they landed Ovi Aedo.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Quite frankly, one more on this because fans take everything
- 19:15Speaker 1: very literal, and it sounded like Boston said they were
- 19:18Speaker 1: going to get like a Coace or a one, A
- 19:20Speaker 1: one B or a number two starter right to Garrett Crochet,
- 19:23Speaker 1: And like you said, I mean, they've filled out their
- 19:25Speaker 1: rotation here. Some fans are like, where's my number one
- 19:29Speaker 1: A or B or number two starter here? And it
- 19:33Speaker 1: seems like they found two guys. I think Sonny greg
- 19:35Speaker 1: can pitch a playoff game. Oviedo actually has the stuff
- 19:37Speaker 1: to pitch a playoff game too. They did it a
- 19:39Speaker 1: little bit unconventionally and they don't have to spend like
- 19:41Speaker 1: say a team like the Blue Jays will spend. So
- 19:45Speaker 1: do you think fans are justified here some of them
- 19:47Speaker 1: to be a little bit perturbed that they didn't get
- 19:49Speaker 1: like this elite pitcher. I actually do.
- 19:54Speaker 6: And I like Sonny Gray.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Buddy's thirty six.
- 19:57Speaker 6: And he's a guy who they love because of his
- 20:00Speaker 6: strikeout rates and the swing and miss and the strikeout
- 20:04Speaker 6: to walk ratio. All of that is really good. I
- 20:07Speaker 6: just question whether when you get to October Sonny Gray
- 20:09Speaker 6: is still going to be that effective a pitcher. So
- 20:13Speaker 6: I understand where the fans are coming from there. And Oviedo, yes,
- 20:17Speaker 6: he has the ability. He's six foot six with an
- 20:19Speaker 6: incredible extension, all of that stuff as well, but he
- 20:24Speaker 6: hasn't done it, and you don't know if he's going
- 20:26Speaker 6: to do it. He's more of a risk along those lines.
- 20:29Speaker 6: So I get where the fans are coming from, but
- 20:32Speaker 6: you have to wait and see the entire picture too,
- 20:35Speaker 6: because if in the end they end up and I'm
- 20:38Speaker 6: just throwing this out there, this is hypothetical, it's speculation,
- 20:40Speaker 6: But if in the end they end up with Sunny
- 20:43Speaker 6: Gray Oviedo and two bats, I don't know who those
- 20:47Speaker 6: bats would be. With two bats, that's a pretty good offseason,
- 20:50Speaker 6: it would seem to me. And if they need more
- 20:52Speaker 6: starting pitching come to deadline, they can go get it.
- 20:55Speaker 6: Then remember the kids that they have came up last
- 20:58Speaker 6: year and performed pretty well. You can't expect him to
- 21:01Speaker 6: be two hundred inning guys in twenty twenty six, but
- 21:04Speaker 6: there's definitely some promise there, and with Sandoval coming back,
- 21:07Speaker 6: who knows what he might provide. So I kind of
- 21:11Speaker 6: like where they are right now, and I want to
- 21:13Speaker 6: see more, obviously, but that's true of any team at
- 21:16Speaker 6: this stage.
- 21:17Speaker 3: Let's stay in the al least Toronto Blue Jays KP
- 21:20Speaker 3: squad Kyle Tucker just visited the Florida facility. There, Okay,
- 21:27Speaker 3: we got something going on here. Now my problem, not
- 21:30Speaker 3: my problem. My situation is here. You talk about him
- 21:32Speaker 3: maybe going to the Blue Jays. Does that make it
- 21:34Speaker 3: hard for Bobaschett to come back or do you see
- 21:37Speaker 3: both of them maybe sticking together if eventually this does
- 21:41Speaker 3: go through.
- 21:42Speaker 6: Todd, I don't know, And it certainly seems from the
- 21:45Speaker 6: outside that it would be tough to do both those guys, right,
- 21:49Speaker 6: Tucker at three point fifty to four hundred million, Bashdd
- 21:52Speaker 6: at one hundred and fifty to two hundred million, and
- 21:54Speaker 6: I might be low. They might be doing even better
- 21:56Speaker 6: than that. Ultimately, that would seem to be a lot,
- 22:00Speaker 6: for sure, when you've already signed Dylan Ceases to a
- 22:02Speaker 6: deal that's valued at about one hundred and eighty five
- 22:04Speaker 6: in present day money. But the Toronto Blue Jays don't
- 22:08Speaker 6: seem to be hesitating this offseason, So I don't know
- 22:11Speaker 6: that we can rule anything out. And the other thing
- 22:14Speaker 6: that's interesting here to me, Todd, and maybe you can
- 22:16Speaker 6: talk about this. We've seen this with the Dodgers.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Great players like to play with great players.
- 22:22Speaker 6: And we haven't seen this kind of NBA thing happen
- 22:25Speaker 6: much in baseball, but it has happened to an extent
- 22:28Speaker 6: with the Dodgers, with Yamamoto joining Otani and then Sasaki
- 22:31Speaker 6: doing the same. I wonder if maybe that is going
- 22:35Speaker 6: to be a situation in Toronto where all of a sudden,
- 22:38Speaker 6: after all those years of failing to get free agents,
- 22:41Speaker 6: players say, you know what, let's go there and win.
- 22:44Speaker 1: They're close. Let's make it happen.
- 22:46Speaker 6: And in that case, if Tucker and Bashett, for instance,
- 22:50Speaker 6: are willing to be creative in their deals, deferrals, whatever
- 22:53Speaker 6: the case might be, then maybe it happens. I don't
- 22:56Speaker 6: know that you can rule it out love it.
- 23:00Speaker 4: As we approach the Winter meetings here, can you kind
- 23:02Speaker 4: of just take me through like a day to day
- 23:05Speaker 4: which you go through at the Winter Meetings. I attended
- 23:07Speaker 4: my first one last year and I kind of just
- 23:09Speaker 4: walked around. It felt like kind of like a high
- 23:11Speaker 4: school reunion. Got to see a lot of people. What's
- 23:14Speaker 4: your kind of day to day? Like you get invited
- 23:16Speaker 4: into GM suites to talk to them? Are you constantly
- 23:20Speaker 4: on the phone? Are you just walking around running into people.
- 23:22Speaker 4: I'm always curious to know what goes on.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Kevin.
- 23:25Speaker 6: I wish I was invited into GM suites. That does
- 23:28Speaker 6: not happen. And the Winter Meetings have changed over the years,
- 23:32Speaker 6: They've become less of a situation where you're seeing people
- 23:36Speaker 6: in the lobby and trying to talk to people that way.
- 23:40Speaker 6: Pretty much everyone now, and I'm talking about the gms
- 23:42Speaker 6: and even the agents. They stay in their suites, maybe
- 23:45Speaker 6: they visit each other, they don't come out, we don't
- 23:48Speaker 6: see them, So it's more of a texting phone kind
- 23:51Speaker 6: of situation than it once was. I used to I
- 23:55Speaker 6: don't know how many steps. We didn't have step counters
- 23:57Speaker 6: back then, but I'm sure I was putting on a
- 23:58Speaker 6: lot of steps back in the day when the lobby
- 24:01Speaker 6: was where it was at. It's really no longer that
- 24:04Speaker 6: way as far as the day is concerned. It kind
- 24:07Speaker 6: of starts early and ends late, and sometimes it doesn't
- 24:10Speaker 6: end at all. And yeah, I'm just constantly trying to
- 24:12Speaker 6: find out what's going on.
- 24:13Speaker 2: It's basically it.
- 24:15Speaker 6: And then when things do happen, or even before things happen,
- 24:18Speaker 6: I'm writing constantly as well. So it's it's really busy,
- 24:21Speaker 6: to say the least.
- 24:23Speaker 2: He's definitely busy over there.
- 24:25Speaker 3: I got off the elevator and he didn't even know
- 24:26Speaker 3: who I was in Vegas.
- 24:28Speaker 2: But that's that's a story for a different time.
- 24:31Speaker 1: I heard about it.
- 24:32Speaker 2: You were locked in.
- 24:33Speaker 6: I was locked in and I did not recognize you.
- 24:35Speaker 6: I was talking to somebody was pretty high up.
- 24:38Speaker 3: We're on like the fortieth We're on the fortieth floor, man,
- 24:41Speaker 3: I told our producering. We were laughing, so it was
- 24:45Speaker 3: fun time, Like, yo, what's up big dog? You're like,
- 24:48Speaker 3: I'm on the phone. Oh okay. So I just kept going.
- 24:50Speaker 3: I was like, you know, Ken forgets me, It's okay,
- 24:53Speaker 3: all good.
- 24:55Speaker 6: I'm not forgetting you, man.
- 24:56Speaker 2: I was just.
- 24:58Speaker 1: I know, have you heard your with the Jersey accent?
- 25:01Speaker 1: He would have been like, oh.
- 25:03Speaker 3: Hey, but when you're hey, when you're working, sometimes you
- 25:06Speaker 3: got to get the job done. My last question for
- 25:09Speaker 3: you is my old team Cincinnati. You know that sometimes
- 25:12Speaker 3: they make some moves, sometimes they don't. They've been in
- 25:15Speaker 3: talks with some people. How about a guy like Kyle
- 25:17Speaker 3: schwarber Man. Have you heard anything with them with the
- 25:20Speaker 3: Reds and anything ink to them.
- 25:22Speaker 6: I have heard that and I've written about it too.
- 25:25Speaker 6: They're trying with him now. In the end it would
- 25:28Speaker 6: seem they're going to get outbid, and some people at
- 25:31Speaker 6: that point might say, see it was never real. It
- 25:34Speaker 6: is real as far as their interest, and it is
- 25:36Speaker 6: real in terms of he's a guy from Middletown, Ohio,
- 25:39Speaker 6: about an half hour north of Cincinnati, and he seems
- 25:42Speaker 6: to be interested in them as well. But can the
- 25:45Speaker 6: Reds outbid the Phillies or whoever else might be on
- 25:48Speaker 6: Kyle Schwarber. That kind of remains to be seen. Now,
- 25:52Speaker 6: what's the scenario for him to sign with Cincinnati. It
- 25:55Speaker 6: would probably be this willing to take less money or deferrals,
- 25:59Speaker 6: whatever the case might be, and willing to join a
- 26:03Speaker 6: team that sees him as a guy who could help
- 26:06Speaker 6: them grow, help their young players, become a great influence
- 26:11Speaker 6: on them, and at the same time want to play
- 26:14Speaker 6: for Terry Francona. These are all appealing things to Shorebrough,
- 26:17Speaker 6: I'm sure, but this is also his last chance at
- 26:20Speaker 6: a major payday most likely, and he's gonna want to
- 26:23Speaker 6: cash out, which, of course you would understand. So I
- 26:27Speaker 6: don't see it happening. But I do believe, not believe,
- 26:31Speaker 6: I know the Reds actually want to make this happen.
- 26:34Speaker 6: It's just a question in the end of whether they
- 26:37Speaker 6: can make it go their way.
- 26:40Speaker 1: Last two year. One fan question Di Alvarez wants to
- 26:43Speaker 1: know what the Dodgers can get for a Taoscar Hernandez
- 26:46Speaker 1: trade in return. If that does end up happening. We
- 26:49Speaker 1: had a good debate yesterday on the show. Kratz was
- 26:51Speaker 1: like a little or on the lower side because I
- 26:53Speaker 1: guess he didn't have as gonna be a year offensively
- 26:55Speaker 1: and definitely not a good year defensively. But is this
- 26:57Speaker 1: about that for the Dodgers or is it I mean,
- 26:59Speaker 1: of course you want to that's something for him, but
- 27:00Speaker 1: is it also about getting all of the puzzle pieces
- 27:03Speaker 1: back in a better position. I know it sounds weird
- 27:05Speaker 1: because Tao's great, but they could improve a lot if
- 27:08Speaker 1: they're able to fill that spot.
- 27:11Speaker 6: It's a really good question. Now they're looking for an
- 27:13Speaker 6: outfielder right now, d so that aspect of it complicates things.
- 27:18Speaker 6: You trade ta Oscar, you need two outfielders now, not
- 27:21Speaker 6: impossible to get two outfielders. The Dodgers certainly could do it,
- 27:25Speaker 6: but it's a question more of yes, making the pieces
- 27:28Speaker 6: fit together. He's not going to be able to DH
- 27:31Speaker 6: for them, right He's declined in the outfield and they
- 27:34Speaker 6: have a DH. His name is shoe Aotani, not going anywhere,
- 27:37Speaker 6: so what would they want back? The Dodgers are always
- 27:40Speaker 6: interesting because they'll take arms that maybe aren't succeeding elsewhere
- 27:44Speaker 6: and turn them into something. I'm not sure what they
- 27:47Speaker 6: would desire there. They would be clearing some money, and
- 27:51Speaker 6: not that it ever seems to matter to the Dodgers.
- 27:53Speaker 6: I'm sure that would be appealing to them, but it
- 27:55Speaker 6: seems to me, Scott, that it would be more to
- 27:57Speaker 6: increase their flexibility with their roster and open up some
- 28:01Speaker 6: things for them, maybe with some better defenders. Again, I
- 28:05Speaker 6: don't know that I expect this to happen, but as
- 28:07Speaker 6: I reported, his name has come up in conversations and
- 28:11Speaker 6: there is a certain logic to moving him because this
- 28:14Speaker 6: is an older position player club. They have the oldest
- 28:17Speaker 6: position player team in the major leagues, or at least
- 28:19Speaker 6: they did last year, so you always want to shake
- 28:23Speaker 6: it up a little bit. I think, even if you're
- 28:24Speaker 6: a two time defending World Series champion, to keep things
- 28:27Speaker 6: from growing stale, trading ta Oscar would be one way.
- 28:31Speaker 2: To do that.
- 28:31Speaker 6: I don't know if it's the best way, but it
- 28:33Speaker 6: would be one way.
- 28:40Speaker 1: But I'm Jim Futures twenty twenty six l MVP odds
- 28:43Speaker 1: are up already and Tod Father, your boy judge is
- 28:46Speaker 1: already a plus three hundred like that is impressive to
- 28:49Speaker 1: be at that number already. Remember after about a week
- 28:53Speaker 1: or two of the season, I think he was already
- 28:56Speaker 1: at even money range, where that is just crazy talk.
- 29:00Speaker 1: But he's at plus three hundred, Bobby Wits at plus
- 29:02Speaker 1: five hundred, cow Riley's at plus seven hundred. Isn't that insane, dude,
- 29:06Speaker 1: to be that highly regarded? It makes you think, Okay,
- 29:10Speaker 1: for as much as we talk about show Hey and
- 29:12Speaker 1: all that, we got to make sure we keep talking
- 29:14Speaker 1: about Judge on the other side and how he's a legend.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Let's do this.
- 29:19Speaker 3: You know, Scotty, you got money, you got money, Kip,
- 29:22Speaker 3: let's all just put twenty thousand together on this plus
- 29:25Speaker 3: three hundred and we can take them a nice boatloaded cash.
- 29:29Speaker 2: No, honestly, I'm not surprised.
- 29:34Speaker 1: You can triple up.
- 29:35Speaker 3: You can triple up, and then we go to Sissler
- 29:39Speaker 3: and then we go have some fun after.
- 29:42Speaker 4: But can we just double down and take show Hey too,
- 29:46Speaker 4: and really a lot of money?
- 29:48Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 29:48Speaker 3: Show he's even money probably I don't know yet, but yeah, dude,
- 29:52Speaker 3: it's incredible, It's incredible. This It just goes to show
- 29:55Speaker 3: you the amount of goodness he has, how good he is.
- 30:01Speaker 3: He is just an incredible human being when it comes
- 30:03Speaker 3: to the game of baseball on and off the field.
- 30:06Speaker 3: He can hit the baseball better than pretty much everybody,
- 30:09Speaker 3: and he knows how to do it even when he's slumping,
- 30:12Speaker 3: even when he's injured. He was off for a while,
- 30:14Speaker 3: he came back and still won the MVP. That's very
- 30:17Speaker 3: hard to do. So going to show you the big
- 30:18Speaker 3: numbers he has and he not missing pitches that he's getting.
- 30:23Speaker 3: You know, two years ago he was swinging outside his
- 30:25Speaker 3: own this year. I mean, I would love to see
- 30:27Speaker 3: his swing against balls out of his own. But it
- 30:30Speaker 3: seemed like every time he got up there, something good
- 30:32Speaker 3: would happen.
- 30:35Speaker 4: I can't let certain things go. So let's just play
- 30:37Speaker 4: some hypothetical real quick. Aaron Judge decides he doesn't want
- 30:42Speaker 4: to play baseball anymore. Is he a Hall of Famer?
- 30:44Speaker 4: And does his number get retired in Yankee Stadium?
- 30:47Speaker 1: Here we go again, right now, right now?
- 30:52Speaker 4: He said, you know what I've done enough, I've won
- 30:54Speaker 4: three You know, I don't want to play anymore? Like
- 30:57Speaker 4: is he worthy of the Hall of Fame? Because he
- 30:59Speaker 4: dominated a period of time. I mean, what's the seven
- 31:02Speaker 4: eight years in he's gonna be maybe longer at this.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Point, probably longer. Probably my guess is nine, but I'll
- 31:09Speaker 1: double check it. Right now.
- 31:10Speaker 4: I think he debuted in two thousand and sixteen, if
- 31:14Speaker 4: I'm not mistaken, and I was twenty seventeen is its
- 31:17Speaker 4: first full season.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Yes, which makes it nine years, right, I mean tend
- 31:21Speaker 1: to one to count sixteen, But nine.
- 31:23Speaker 3: Years seventeen he won the Rookie the home run Most
- 31:26Speaker 3: home runs by a rookie Pete. I was on the
- 31:28Speaker 3: team with he did it. Then Judge did it in seventeen.
- 31:32Speaker 3: Oh man, I would say, I would say, right now.
- 31:37Speaker 2: Oh man, see I hate I hate it.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Wait wait god, I'm gonna help you, dude. I think
- 31:43Speaker 1: it's easy. I think it's a lock. We had this
- 31:45Speaker 1: with with Mike Trout when he did this, and then
- 31:48Speaker 1: actually it's kind of played out that way where Mike
- 31:50Speaker 1: Trout was the man. I mean even I would well
- 31:53Speaker 1: probably in similar guard to Judge right, more of an
- 31:55Speaker 1: all around I mean they're both all around players. I
- 31:58Speaker 1: don't know, both superstars in their era best in the sport,
- 32:00Speaker 1: or number two or three at worst. And then it
- 32:04Speaker 1: just fell off for Trout. That's kind of the question
- 32:06Speaker 1: that KP's asking in my mind, and Trout's been a lock,
- 32:09Speaker 1: like when you have a peak. I mean a lot
- 32:11Speaker 1: of times they look at seven year peak and these
- 32:13Speaker 1: guys are already you know, like Judge is already what
- 32:15Speaker 1: more of a nine year peak as the best, if
- 32:19Speaker 1: not top three player in the sport for that long.
- 32:21Speaker 1: To me, that's an easy lock. You don't have the volume.
- 32:24Speaker 1: But we're not talking about a guy that's like, oh,
- 32:26Speaker 1: he's been in the MVP mix, like you know where
- 32:28Speaker 1: it's a better conversation Todd is if you know Jose
- 32:31Speaker 1: Ramirez stops his career to marrow like I think he's
- 32:34Speaker 1: getting close, but but his would be a little bit
- 32:37Speaker 1: more of a debate. With Judge, it's like best or
- 32:39Speaker 1: second best bat for years and years and he's almost
- 32:43Speaker 1: ten years in the bigs. I'm good.
- 32:44Speaker 3: And the the reason I'm saying because everybody's like, oh,
- 32:47Speaker 3: the bias with the New York and with me working
- 32:49Speaker 3: you know, with the Yankees. That's the only reason I
- 32:51Speaker 3: pull back because people are like, oh, well he's a
- 32:53Speaker 3: Yankee guy. But yeah, I would have to one hundred
- 32:56Speaker 3: percent agree with you on all accounts.
- 32:58Speaker 4: Yes, I do, And that's why I disagree with Like,
- 33:01Speaker 4: that's why I disagree with like the numbers. I'm looking
- 33:03Speaker 4: at his numbers, sixty two point three war, twelve hundred hits,
- 33:08Speaker 4: three hundred and sixty eight home runs. But I mean,
- 33:10Speaker 4: you talk about a nine year period or an eight
- 33:12Speaker 4: year period of dominance, like Hall of Fame has to
- 33:16Speaker 4: have a guy like that in it. And this is
- 33:18Speaker 4: assuming he just stopped playing, you know, if he hasn't
- 33:21Speaker 4: gradual declined.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Or even if he falls off the cliff.
- 33:24Speaker 4: But it's it's just crazy, you know that it goes
- 33:27Speaker 4: back to our point of you know, I don't believe
- 33:30Speaker 4: in this giant Hall of Fame, but there's got to
- 33:32Speaker 4: be like some feel like you ask a player who
- 33:34Speaker 4: played against him, You're like, yes, the guy was a
- 33:37Speaker 4: Hall of Famer, Like he was so much better than
- 33:39Speaker 4: everyone else on the field, and look what he did
- 33:41Speaker 4: for a nine year period of time. Like he was
- 33:43Speaker 4: the best player on the field for nine straight years.
- 33:46Speaker 4: You know, probably much like Don Mattingly. Maybe not the
- 33:48Speaker 4: level of dominance of Aaron Judge, but you ask people,
- 33:51Speaker 4: when you played against this guy, he was just better
- 33:53Speaker 4: than everyone else.
- 33:55Speaker 3: Hey, and you and I need to have a root
- 33:57Speaker 3: beer and just talk because there's gonna be a lot
- 33:59Speaker 3: of guys and we play eventually coming up and you
- 34:02Speaker 3: and me sit down like yeah or no, Like there
- 34:05Speaker 3: there's a couple of there's one couple that come to mind.
- 34:08Speaker 1: I get it.
- 34:08Speaker 4: I get it. It's hard when you have like a
- 34:10Speaker 4: personal relationship with people. I mean, look at look at
- 34:13Speaker 4: the name behind me right here. You know, I know
- 34:15Speaker 4: he's on the Hall of Fame ballot. Like I would say,
- 34:18Speaker 4: I mean, if if gun pointed to my head and
- 34:20Speaker 4: I had a vote, you know, I would say probably
- 34:23Speaker 4: not as a friend of his.
- 34:25Speaker 1: And wait, just you got to clarify, because you got
- 34:27Speaker 1: Kershaw and Burley.
- 34:28Speaker 4: That one's a lot, no that I'm talking about?
- 34:31Speaker 1: Yeah, wait, that one.
- 34:33Speaker 4: That side's a lock. This side who I'm talking about?
- 34:36Speaker 4: Mark Burley, Yes, a guy that god man, he just
- 34:41Speaker 4: did some great things in this game. He was a
- 34:43Speaker 4: great team in of mind. I loved him so much.
- 34:45Speaker 4: He's on the Hall of Fame ballot deservingly so is he.
- 34:49Speaker 4: When you put Mark Burley in the conversation with a
- 34:51Speaker 4: Kershaw and a Verlander and a Satchel Page and a
- 34:55Speaker 4: you know, it's it's it's hard.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Right, Yeah? Is he that dude? Does he?
- 34:59Speaker 3: I'm not saying the done Zervan, but when they talk
- 35:01Speaker 3: about those names, should he be with with that company?
- 35:05Speaker 2: Oh?
- 35:05Speaker 4: And that's what I That's what I That's what I
- 35:07Speaker 4: took out of our previous conversation. When you're naming the
- 35:10Speaker 4: committee and the people that are on the ballot, you're
- 35:13Speaker 4: like those names kind of all intertwined with each other,
- 35:16Speaker 4: like I'm not seeing like I'm not seeing guys that
- 35:18Speaker 4: Like it's not like my name was in there, and
- 35:20Speaker 4: you're like, okay, no, okay, that's audit. You know, like
- 35:23Speaker 4: the names seem so intertwined.
- 35:25Speaker 2: You know.
- 35:25Speaker 4: And I think they have to do a better job
- 35:28Speaker 4: of recognizing eras of the game, because I do believe
- 35:32Speaker 4: the game is has only advanced, it's only gotten harder,
- 35:36Speaker 4: not only the skills required to hit and to pitch
- 35:39Speaker 4: and to get out and the ability to play defense,
- 35:41Speaker 4: but just the longevity aspect, you know, because the game
- 35:45Speaker 4: is trying to get younger and younger, so like it's
- 35:47Speaker 4: a lot harder for players to play a long period
- 35:49Speaker 4: of time, Like I had to scratch and claw to
- 35:52Speaker 4: play my last four years to get to ten years,
- 35:54Speaker 4: like it felt like smooth sailing for my first five
- 35:57Speaker 4: or six. Like the game's always trying to force you out,
- 36:00Speaker 4: like it's going to be rare we see guys in
- 36:02Speaker 4: today's game unless they come up as a nineteen year
- 36:05Speaker 4: old to really play, you know, eighteen nineteen years and
- 36:09Speaker 4: you know, to be able to put up enough time,
- 36:12Speaker 4: get enough at bats to have three thousand hits or
- 36:15Speaker 4: three hundred wins. Like it's just not happening anymore. The
- 36:17Speaker 4: game's not allowing it. So you have to factor in errors.
- 36:21Speaker 3: Yeah, and to your point, like you see, how did
- 36:24Speaker 3: these names get picked? Like for the committee, Like how
- 36:27Speaker 3: does this happen? And no knock to like Adjason Stark
- 36:31Speaker 3: or anything. I love him to death. I love I
- 36:33Speaker 3: love news people. I love them. But they didn't play
- 36:37Speaker 3: the game either, So it's like it's hard like why
- 36:41Speaker 3: some people might say why is he on the committee
- 36:43Speaker 3: and not another player or another ex player? So it's
- 36:47Speaker 3: it's the back and forth battle. It's like, all right,
- 36:50Speaker 3: well if I'm Barry Bonds, well I'm probably not. I'm
- 36:52Speaker 3: not saying for this year. I'm just looking at names. Well,
- 36:55Speaker 3: this guy old school doesn't like this, I'm probably not
- 36:57Speaker 3: going to get a vote from him. He could probably
- 36:59Speaker 3: narrow it that to you know, how many guys he's
- 37:01Speaker 3: really going to vote for him to get in. So
- 37:04Speaker 3: it's just that type of committee where it's like, all right,
- 37:07Speaker 3: why not just I don't know what the answer is,
- 37:10Speaker 3: but it makes you wonder sometimes.
- 37:12Speaker 1: Yeah, But I mean it's different from the writer's vote,
- 37:16Speaker 1: which is all writers. So you at least get to
- 37:17Speaker 1: a point where you're going to then get a blend
- 37:19Speaker 1: of players executives, and then you got the writers who
- 37:23Speaker 1: are more of like the historians, who I think, yeah,
- 37:26Speaker 1: they have a vote, but they're also trying to help
- 37:27Speaker 1: people understand. Hey, let's look at this era. Let me
- 37:30Speaker 1: give you all of the information and background on this guy.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Like I think they can be helpful too when they're present.
- 37:35Speaker 3: But in this in the committee, and you know, more
- 37:38Speaker 3: the thing about they shouldn't they should help you with that,
- 37:41Speaker 3: but they probably also, in my opinion, shouldn't have.
- 37:43Speaker 2: A vote since they already had a vote beforehand.
- 37:46Speaker 3: Not saying Jason had the vote for that year, but
- 37:49Speaker 3: they they get the vote already, why not help out?
- 37:52Speaker 3: Hey this guy did this, this and this.
- 37:53Speaker 2: Here's the numbers. Boom, good luck. You know what I'm saying.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, the vote. Yeah, and a writer can present
- 38:02Speaker 1: a case, but then they don't get a vote, and
- 38:03Speaker 1: it's just like, no, this is the player's vote.
- 38:05Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, good, bad or indifferent. Here's everything on the table. Boom,
- 38:10Speaker 3: good luck. I'll be outside. You got it, you got
- 38:12Speaker 3: two hours.
- 38:12Speaker 2: Whatever it is.
- 38:14Speaker 4: I like it because your point that they already previously
- 38:17Speaker 4: had an opportunity to vote for someone, and there could
- 38:19Speaker 4: be some bias with that, but allow writers or historians
- 38:22Speaker 4: to come into that room and be like, here's the
- 38:24Speaker 4: historical context. This is how these players stack up. This
- 38:27Speaker 4: is how they compare. You guys are the ones that
- 38:30Speaker 4: played You guys are the ones that are in the
- 38:31Speaker 4: Hall of Fame. You believe that these players should be,
- 38:34Speaker 4: you know, placked up with you, on the stage with you.
- 38:38Speaker 4: You know, I think you would get a better you know,
- 38:40Speaker 4: a group of players to make that decision. It should
- 38:43Speaker 4: be people in the Hall of Fame ultimately making that
- 38:46Speaker 4: decision when it comes to like a vote like this.
- 38:50Speaker 1: Hey, good stuff, guys on the way out here. This
- 38:52Speaker 1: was a little bet MGM segment. They're offering an odds
- 38:54Speaker 1: boost token for World Cup markets on the winner next
- 38:58Speaker 1: summer as open up already for June. That is Tim.
- 39:02Speaker 1: That looks like Tim Howard, doesn't it. I think that's
- 39:04Speaker 1: Tim Howard.
- 39:05Speaker 2: How did I know that? I'm a beast of soccer.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Let's go dude, Tim Howard was a legend. Speaking of legends. Yeah,
- 39:12Speaker 1: but anyway, you can get in a little odds boost
- 39:14Speaker 1: token dropped into your account now opten necessary out of
- 39:17Speaker 1: tournament winner bet or any futures bet on the World Cup.
- 39:20Speaker 1: And if you win that bet with the token applied,
- 39:22Speaker 1: you know the deal. You get extra winnings. World Cups
- 39:25Speaker 1: a while away. But this little boost is coming up
- 39:28Speaker 1: this weekend and it expires after I think about twelve hours. Yeah,
- 39:35Speaker 1: on the fifth, which is tomorrow. Gambling problem, more concern
- 39:38Speaker 1: called one eight hundred gambler. Let's just h the fifth
- 39:50Speaker 1: is today, My bad, so maybe it doesn't expired today. Anyway,
- 39:55Speaker 1: Let's hit hot corner. What we're hearing about the Cubs.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Let's just do a quickie on this because we're getting
- 39:59Speaker 1: close to time. I'm a renewed interest in Alex Bregman.
- 40:02Speaker 1: The story from Patrick Moodey and toddeve sharmover at the
- 40:04Speaker 1: Athletic and also you can listen to them on North
- 40:06Speaker 1: Side Territory. I think they have an episode out on
- 40:09Speaker 1: this already. If they don't, they will trust me. Alex
- 40:12Speaker 1: Bregman a candidate to be with the Cubs again. Now
- 40:16Speaker 1: we know that there was interest initially KP Last year.
- 40:19Speaker 1: The Cubs offered him in February one hundred and fifteen
- 40:22Speaker 1: million dollars over four years that included opt out clauses
- 40:26Speaker 1: after the second and the third season. His deal from
- 40:29Speaker 1: Boston was won twenty mil with deferrals, so it was
- 40:31Speaker 1: actually a little lower overall guaranteed money than the one fifteen,
- 40:34Speaker 1: but it was over three years with an opt out
- 40:35Speaker 1: after year one. So the Cubs in my mind, lost bag.
- 40:38Speaker 1: Like they were not close. They put something out there
- 40:40Speaker 1: that's cute, but they were not close. There's renewed interest.
- 40:43Speaker 1: Kyle Tucker's not coming back. You look at the position
- 40:46Speaker 1: player group and you're like, are they going to let
- 40:47Speaker 1: Matt Shaw run a little bit? Sure, but they have
- 40:50Speaker 1: a ton of free agents after the twenty six season,
- 40:53Speaker 1: and I think there's some concern there. It's really only
- 40:56Speaker 1: Dansby Swanson and Matt Shaw, and then there's a number
- 40:59Speaker 1: of guys that could be an as Suzuki. Nico Horner's
- 41:02Speaker 1: on that list. So do you think that this is realistic?
- 41:06Speaker 1: Will this actually happen? I think the biggest question is
- 41:09Speaker 1: will the Cubs actually be the winning bidder for Alex
- 41:12Speaker 1: Bragman In this case? I think Boston's gonna outpit them.
- 41:16Speaker 4: How could they not? I mean, Alex Bregman is a
- 41:18Speaker 4: phenomenal player. They were already had interest in him. Bregman
- 41:22Speaker 4: did what he needed to do. It wasn't about I
- 41:24Speaker 4: don't think it was about there was a safety blanket
- 41:27Speaker 4: with the long term deal, but he really was seeking
- 41:29Speaker 4: that opt out. He wasn't coming off the best year.
- 41:31Speaker 4: He proved He's still an unbelievable player. You know, someone's
- 41:35Speaker 4: gonna just have to step up to the plate. But
- 41:37Speaker 4: Alex Bredman fits exactly what the Cubs sort of need.
- 41:40Speaker 4: They need a guy who's been there, done it. Just
- 41:43Speaker 4: imagine a Dansby Swanson Alex Bregman left side of the infield,
- 41:46Speaker 4: both guys with you know, World Series championships, pedigrees everything.
- 41:51Speaker 4: I think that would be a you know, great faceiver
- 41:53Speaker 4: franchise moving forward.
- 41:56Speaker 3: Yeah, the guy's been a stud I mean, there's enough
- 41:59Speaker 3: to do, can play. He's doing it at a tough
- 42:03Speaker 3: age getting older too as well. Not many people want
- 42:05Speaker 3: these veteran guys anymore, and they're you know, as they're
- 42:08Speaker 3: getting into their thirties and older. But this kid absolute
- 42:11Speaker 3: stud plays the game while plays hard, you know if
- 42:15Speaker 3: his stature too, just plays the game the right way.
- 42:18Speaker 1: I think he's got the magic sauce too. I think
- 42:20Speaker 1: he is a true true coach. Jim ratt Nut Yeah exactly,
- 42:26Speaker 1: But I do think like he like pop quizes guys
- 42:28Speaker 1: on pitchers to make sure that a guy that he
- 42:30Speaker 1: doesn't feel like studying enough is studying. He's going up
- 42:33Speaker 1: to every guy with tips, right, not like forcefully, just
- 42:36Speaker 1: like I think a really brilliant baseball mind. I think
- 42:40Speaker 1: you've heard that from a lot of guys that play
- 42:41Speaker 1: with him. And then he goes to Boston, you hear
- 42:44Speaker 1: stories like that. And this was mentioned in the article
- 42:47Speaker 1: that Pete crow Armstrong really gravitated towards Justin Turner, and
- 42:52Speaker 1: this could be that next guy that could help Pete
- 42:55Speaker 1: continue to develop, someone like Alex Bragmant coming in remember
- 42:57Speaker 1: PCA was an MVP candidate, was gonna a ton of money
- 43:00Speaker 1: on an early extension, and then he really fell off
- 43:03Speaker 1: towards the end of the year. But the talent's there.
- 43:05Speaker 1: We've seen it, right, We've seen it at a superstar
- 43:07Speaker 1: level for half a season. So anyway, I think the
- 43:10Speaker 1: Cubs would be wise to invest in Alex Bragman coming
- 43:13Speaker 1: over the team. Will they win the bid? I don't
- 43:15Speaker 1: think so. I don't think they're going to spend as
- 43:17Speaker 1: much as as someone else. And I also think that
- 43:19Speaker 1: their focus is on pitching, which is fine. So then
- 43:21Speaker 1: if you're going to spend your big money you're a
- 43:22Speaker 1: big nut on someone, then go on pitching. I'm okay
- 43:25Speaker 1: with that.
- 43:26Speaker 4: It's to your point. I never to your point. I
- 43:28Speaker 4: never played with Alex Bragman, but I kind of knew
- 43:31Speaker 4: him a little bit, And I just remember one day
- 43:33Speaker 4: calling him on the phone asking about hitting in the
- 43:36Speaker 4: off season, and he said, hey, let me call you
- 43:38Speaker 4: right back. He facetimeed me. He was standing up in
- 43:40Speaker 4: his house with a bat and just took me through
- 43:42Speaker 4: a bunch of different things that he thought about that
- 43:44Speaker 4: he felt like would help me. And like I said,
- 43:46Speaker 4: I never played with the guy. For him to like
- 43:48Speaker 4: take that time out of his day to kind of
- 43:50Speaker 4: just help me out just kind of shows what type
- 43:52Speaker 4: of guy is that, how much he loves hitting and
- 43:54Speaker 4: gain the game and being engaged with people to try
- 43:57Speaker 4: to make them kind of the best version of themselves.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Yeah, he's never here. I never got that call from him.
- 44:04Speaker 3: I guess that wasn't that good.
- 44:05Speaker 1: But hey, Todd, guess what if you call her if
- 44:09Speaker 1: you FaceTime him this week, I bet you he'll do it.
- 44:13Speaker 1: I bet you.
- 44:14Speaker 2: I know he will.
- 44:14Speaker 3: I'm gonna I'm gonna he loves it. When I wake
- 44:18Speaker 3: up in the morning in my robe, I'm gonna ask
- 44:20Speaker 3: him to move the hips, show me how to go
- 44:21Speaker 3: from A to B. Baby, let's go.
- 44:25Speaker 4: He's gonna be flash lights, flash lights don't rotate.
- 44:29Speaker 1: He's definitely the guy, right yeah, right here, always has
- 44:33Speaker 1: a back and always you'll catch him. You'll catch him
- 44:37Speaker 1: at any time, like it's like six in the morning,
- 44:40Speaker 1: he's just waking up and like this is how he's
- 44:41Speaker 1: drinking his cup of coffee, right like, oh, hey Todd,
- 44:46Speaker 1: yeah yeah, yeah, some medding tips where like always has
- 44:50Speaker 1: to have a bat. Yeah. Anyway, so we'll see what
- 44:53Speaker 1: happens with that. Let's hit slap oh Winter meetings next week.
- 45:09Speaker 1: This is the way that we finish off this week,
- 45:11Speaker 1: because next time you hear from us, we will be
- 45:13Speaker 1: in Orlando. We'll travel far and wide. AJ and I
- 45:16Speaker 1: to go to our backyard and be at a hotel
- 45:18Speaker 1: all day and grab gms and managers. Some of the
- 45:22Speaker 1: names already confirmed on the list include Cardinals manager Ali Marmle,
- 45:28Speaker 1: Red's manager Terry Francona, Guardians manager Stephen Vote, Tiger's manager A. J.
- 45:33Speaker 1: Hinch Cardinals knew whatever they're calling in President Baseball Operations,
- 45:37Speaker 1: him Bloom both new guys for the Nationals. Paul Toponi
- 45:41Speaker 1: running the front office, Blake Puterra running the manager's side.
- 45:45Speaker 1: We got our insiders there, Ken Rosenthal, Bob Nightingale, Robert Murray,
- 45:48Speaker 1: Jim Bowden. We're bringing it so we'll see you on
- 45:52Speaker 1: YouTube or if you listen to us on the podcast
- 45:55Speaker 1: next week. That's all we got you guys crushed. I
- 45:58Speaker 1: like this lineup combination.
- 46:00Speaker 4: Good line Hey, make sure you make sure you I
- 46:02Speaker 4: d Blake Buttero okay, make sure you id.
- 46:07Speaker 1: Hey, you know AJ and Kratz will manager. That's under
- 46:11Speaker 1: forty years old. They're going to bring all your two
- 46:15Speaker 1: young baby face blah blah blah kind of jokes. And
- 46:18Speaker 1: I heard an interview with Blake the other day. He
- 46:20Speaker 1: does sound like he's a pretty mature guy, as he
