Transcript
- 0:35Speaker 1: What is happening, everybody?
- 0:36Speaker 1: This is Dave Croft, and welcome back to another cue review where I feature a cue written by a member of the 52 Cues community and give feedback, like you might hear from a music supervisor or a library.
- 0:50Speaker 1: So we are checking out Ascension written by Jake Cox.
- 0:55Speaker 1: This is an uplifting piano and orchestral cue, and so we are going to take a listen to it and then talk about it on the other side.
- 1:03Speaker 1: You, you, you, you, you you.
- 5:32Speaker 1: You, you, you Isolate this to get kind of a feel Just die, you might not be able to hear this.
- 7:02Speaker 1: It's just feeling a little rumbly and a little boomy here, so I would be careful as far as the EQ Just on those hits.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I think this is all working.
- 7:16Speaker 1: It's nice build.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Maybe bring the strings out a little bit more as we ramp up.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Nice stop down, edit point, and I felt the the rhythmic drive kind of stall out a little bit here and I felt, you know, we were going to these big sustained sounds which work.
- 7:43Speaker 1: And I think if we wanted to do that, what we could do is pull the energy back a little bit.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Right, so we have it build up through here, pull the energy back, introduce the choir, introduce the sustained sounds, maybe bring the percussion back and then when we bring the string ostinatos in a little bit later, that's going to hit a little bit harder.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Or, conversely, we could just skip ahead and go right to right to that spot.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Let's see, let's see if I can't kind of fake this a little bit to see how this, how this would sound.
- 8:31Speaker 1: This is going to be a rough, but just going to skip over that.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Yeah, that, that, that kind of works.
- 8:47Speaker 1: But what I didn't like we, like I said we lost the, the rhythmic engine.
- 8:54Speaker 1: That's really kind of driving it.
- 8:56Speaker 1: So a couple of different solutions, as I mentioned, we can pull back, pull the percussion back and just go for kind of wash floating, you know, and then push forward when we bring in the string ostinatos.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Or we can bring in the string ostinatos a little bit sooner so that we can, we have somewhere to go and I would change a chord.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I would go to a five sus chord.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Here You're landing on tonic and I think if we, if we waited for tonic, then when we finally hit it later, it's going to make it that much sweeter.
- 9:53Speaker 1: So I would go to a five sus sus, four chord, resolving to the sus, and then the six to the four, to the one six four eight.
- 10:15Speaker 1: And maybe the one here I would.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I would add a different chord right there.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Maybe let's see what key are we in.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Oh, that's, that's the wrong instrument here.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Let me get a piano loaded in, so so we're in B flat.
- 10:46Speaker 1: So what chord could we use instead here?
- 11:02Speaker 1: Dead, here I'm suggesting going to the five, but instead we go, we could go up to or down to the C minor, or, yeah, try that.
- 11:31Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't know if I like that we could go up to the D minor here and then up to the.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Oh, I like that.
- 11:44Speaker 1: That was going up to the three.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Go to the D minor, oh, then so B flat, I'm sorry, g minor to the E flat.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Then we can go to, and then go to the G minor and then the big sus cord, and let don't resolve the tonic, don't resolve the tonic, you want the.
- 12:31Speaker 1: And then the resolution happens when you come in back with the piano motif from the beginning, and so I love that descending kind of floating you know floating feather again, sylvester.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Then we introduce that idea.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Can we add those earlier?
- 13:06Speaker 1: Or something like that?
- 13:22Speaker 1: Have have that floating motif, and I think that's going to be an extra gear that we can add when we go to the very end, because I feel like we need just a little bit more juice and if we borrow that floating, floating piano motif then I think that's going to work well.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Hit tonic, you got to hit.
- 13:53Speaker 1: You got to hit the tonic here, maybe even like nice, and that's a little bit too low.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Maybe open fifth, that could work too.
- 14:13Speaker 1: But yeah, definitely want to hit tonic there.
- 14:16Speaker 1: But I did enjoy this.
- 14:18Speaker 1: The title is called Ascension, which feels a little arty and that's okay.
- 14:24Speaker 1: One word titles I have found to be a relatively tough sell but I would give it a little bit more, like maybe Ascension Rising, you know, or Ascended Consciousness, or I like the word Ascension.
- 14:39Speaker 1: I would make Ascension kind of the cornerstone there.
- 14:44Speaker 1: If this was yours living on an album of Jake's music, then I think that would be fine.
- 14:49Speaker 1: But as it is for a production cue, it paints a picture but it doesn't necessarily set a scene, if that makes any sense.
- 14:59Speaker 1: But, jake, thank you so much for sending this along.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Like I said, this was sent along during our week 41 weekly feedback thread and we put weekly feedback threads together every single week and if you would like to have your cue featured here on the 52 Cues YouTube channel.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Then head over to 52 Cues.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Join up it's free, because I will be choosing one of these cues to feature next week.
- 15:25Speaker 1: And if you enjoyed that and you would like feedback on your own cues, then head over to 52Cuescom slash coaching.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Lots of different ways that you could get feedback, whether you order up a feedback video, ordering up a one on one coaching session, signing up for our mastermind or joining us over at 52 Cues as a neighbor, friend or family subscriber with things like workshops, feedback session, other Zoom sessions, composing live streams and a ton more.
- 15:53Speaker 1: We'd love to see you over there, but that's going to do it for me.
- 15:56Speaker 1: I hope you are doing well and I hope that was helpful for you until next time, peace.
