Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more disgrace Land in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast. It comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode of disgrace Land to the other, the backyard to
- 0:40Speaker 1: dig into the dirt. On this bonus episode, we are
- 0:43Speaker 1: talking about Chris Cornell. We are previewing the coming episode
- 0:46Speaker 1: on Winona Ryder, talking artists with follow up bands that
- 0:49Speaker 1: were more impactful than their breakthroughs. And we get into
- 0:52Speaker 1: your voicemails, text DMS, emails and as always a whole
- 0:56Speaker 1: lot of rosie. All right, Discos, let's get in to
- 1:00Speaker 1: it all right, Chris Cornell. This week's full episode subject
- 1:17Speaker 1: broke through obviously in Soundgarden, and then went to find
- 1:20Speaker 1: success in Audio Sleeve. The question of the week this
- 1:24Speaker 1: week was what artists had more impact in their follow
- 1:27Speaker 1: up band than they did in their breakthrough band. Obviously,
- 1:30Speaker 1: Chris Cornell's career inspired this question. Now for the record,
- 1:35Speaker 1: I'm leaving off people like Dave Navarro who went from
- 1:38Speaker 1: Jane's Addiction to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It's a
- 1:40Speaker 1: bit of a nuanced reason, but it's because Chili Peppers
- 1:43Speaker 1: weren't really Navarro's band. He joined pretty much as a sideman.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Wasn't even a full member of my opinion, so he
- 1:50Speaker 1: doesn't qualify. Neither is someone like Ronnie James Dio, who
- 1:53Speaker 1: left Black Sabbath to have a successful solo career. We're
- 1:57Speaker 1: talking groups here, okay. Making it in two groups two
- 2:02Speaker 1: bands is a much harder achievement in my estimation. Those
- 2:06Speaker 1: artists who break through with one band and then repeat
- 2:08Speaker 1: their success where then they surpassed their previous success in
- 2:11Speaker 1: another group. That's huge. That is not easy. So I
- 2:15Speaker 1: was surprised to learn that Soundgarden has sold significantly more
- 2:20Speaker 1: albums than Audio Slaves thirty million for Soundgarden to just
- 2:24Speaker 1: eight million for Audio Slave. The Boys and Guns N' Roses.
- 2:28Speaker 1: They did not fare better with Velvet Revolver. GNR is
- 2:32Speaker 1: a significantly bigger band than Velvet Revolver, as was Stone
- 2:37Speaker 1: Temple Pilots. Here's one though, bit of left field. Not really,
- 2:42Speaker 1: I wouldn't have thought of this. I looked it up
- 2:43Speaker 1: this morning. Bell Biv Deevo much bigger group for Ronnie,
- 2:47Speaker 1: Ricky and Michael the new Edition. Okay, what about Blur
- 2:52Speaker 1: and Gorillas? This, this one is shocking to me. Okay,
- 2:57Speaker 1: Gorillas have sold far more albums than Blur, something like
- 3:00Speaker 1: forty million to six million Gorillas. That is incredible. It's amazing.
- 3:06Speaker 1: He'll always be damon from Blur. To me, though, Kim
- 3:09Speaker 1: Deal's Breeders album Last Splash has supposedly sold more than
- 3:15Speaker 1: all of the Pixies albums combined. I don't know. I
- 3:18Speaker 1: read that, and I think the Internet might be fucking
- 3:22Speaker 1: with me on this one. This does not sound like
- 3:25Speaker 1: it's right, But yeah, Cannonball Man Crazy, here's a super
- 3:30Speaker 1: relevant one because we were talking about this couple weeks ago,
- 3:35Speaker 1: two after parties ago. I believe we were talking about
- 3:38Speaker 1: Joy Division and New Order. By the way, I know,
- 3:40Speaker 1: I'm supposed to have an update on Rock and Roll
- 3:42Speaker 1: Hall of Fame inductees, but I'm recording this after party
- 3:46Speaker 1: way earlier than I normally do because we need to
- 3:48Speaker 1: get produced in advance because of some vacation stuff that's
- 3:52Speaker 1: going on. School vacation, that sort of thing. So I
- 3:55Speaker 1: don't have the nominee Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
- 3:59Speaker 1: inductee's gives me inductee update for you just yet. But
- 4:02Speaker 1: when we were talking about this a couple episodes ago,
- 4:05Speaker 1: a couple bonus episodes ago, we were talking about Joy
- 4:07Speaker 1: Division and New Order as potential. They're nominated, they might
- 4:12Speaker 1: be inducted. I don't think they're going to get in.
- 4:14Speaker 1: I don't understand why they're being inducted as two groups.
- 4:19Speaker 1: That doesn't make any fucking sense. But you know, after
- 4:22Speaker 1: of course, Ian Curtis died, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, and
- 4:25Speaker 1: Bernard Summer went on to form New Order and sold
- 4:30Speaker 1: way more, way more records than Joy Division. But I'm
- 4:34Speaker 1: guessing not as many T shirts. Should sales be the
- 4:38Speaker 1: final deciding element here, I don't know. I think so
- 4:42Speaker 1: because sales usually correlate with radio play, video play, and
- 4:45Speaker 1: cultural impact, except maybe in the case the Breeders versus
- 4:49Speaker 1: the Pixies. To me, the Pixies aren't way more culturally impactful.
- 4:51Speaker 1: They've been doing this for so long, and I feel
- 4:53Speaker 1: like they've they've just they've touched more people. It's anecdotal
- 4:57Speaker 1: but that's how I feel. I'm curious what you guys
- 4:59Speaker 1: think on the on the Pixies Breeders question. I think
- 5:03Speaker 1: we have to mention Dave misstaying here, who after getting
- 5:06Speaker 1: booted from Metallica, went on to form Megadeth. They never
- 5:09Speaker 1: did what Metallica did, and Dave is still crying about it.
- 5:12Speaker 1: But they are one of the top four thrash bands
- 5:14Speaker 1: of all time, along with Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax, part
- 5:18Speaker 1: of the so called Big four? Who else? Who else?
- 5:21Speaker 1: Eric Clapton from Yardbirds to Cream to Derek and the Dominoes.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Does he get it for doing it three times? I
- 5:29Speaker 1: guess you can make the case, but Yardbirds weren't really
- 5:32Speaker 1: his band, were they? I don't know. Is this the
- 5:36Speaker 1: right answer? Derek and the Dominoes one album and not
- 5:39Speaker 1: a very good one. This feels like a cheap win,
- 5:42Speaker 1: if it's a win at all. Paul McCartney jumping from
- 5:46Speaker 1: Beatles to Wings is worthy of our consideration, despite the
- 5:49Speaker 1: fact that Wings were obviously not as big as the Beatles.
- 5:54Speaker 1: The big one here is, of course, Foo Fighters. Dave
- 5:59Speaker 1: Grohl going on to just, you know, have this incredible
- 6:02Speaker 1: career with Food Fighters after being the drummer in Nirvana,
- 6:06Speaker 1: And I think you got to give a special tip
- 6:09Speaker 1: of the hat to Dave Grohl for going from playing
- 6:12Speaker 1: drums to fronting the band. But but I was a
- 6:17Speaker 1: little surprised by this one too. Foo Fighters have sold
- 6:21Speaker 1: half as many albums as Nirvana. I get that Nirvana
- 6:24Speaker 1: is truly iconic, but I would think the amount of
- 6:28Speaker 1: time Food Fighters have been around, I thought there was
- 6:31Speaker 1: a chance they actually sold more records. But no, it's
- 6:33Speaker 1: like seventy to seventy five million for Nirvana and something
- 6:36Speaker 1: like thirty two thirty five million for food Fighters. So
- 6:40Speaker 1: there you go. About what about Steve Malcolmus going from
- 6:43Speaker 1: Pavement to the Heavy Quartet? Though I'm just kidding. I
- 6:46Speaker 1: just wanted to mention the Heavy Quartet, Okay, I think
- 6:49Speaker 1: I think those are our contenders. I don't think I'm
- 6:52Speaker 1: really forgetting anyone of significance, but you guys are gonna
- 6:54Speaker 1: let me know when I get to the phone calls.
- 6:56Speaker 1: What's what is the answer? Okay? Which second act was
- 6:59Speaker 1: more impactful than the first? Surprisingly, I'm very surprised by this,
- 7:04Speaker 1: But I think the answer is Damon Alburn and Gorillas.
- 7:06Speaker 1: I think Gorilla's over Blur. Those record sales numbers are
- 7:11Speaker 1: no joke, and they dwarf Blur's success. I knew Blur
- 7:14Speaker 1: never sold a ton of records beyond the UK, but
- 7:20Speaker 1: I would never have guessed that Gorillas were bigger. I
- 7:23Speaker 1: should have known. I should have known. So that's my answer,
- 7:27Speaker 1: Damon Alburn, that's right. I don't know. Maybe you can
- 7:30Speaker 1: make the case for Bell Bivdavo as well, but my
- 7:33Speaker 1: gut tells me more people think about Blur than they
- 7:35Speaker 1: do New Edition. So that's why I give it to
- 7:37Speaker 1: Gorillas over Bell Bivdavo. But maybe this is my side
- 7:40Speaker 1: of the street. Then again, I grew up I legally
- 7:42Speaker 1: buying beer in Boston's combat zone, so I know a
- 7:44Speaker 1: little thing or two about New Edition. But I want
- 7:46Speaker 1: to know what you guys think. We're gonna get to
- 7:48Speaker 1: your answers on this question shortly, but first I have
- 7:51Speaker 1: to tell you about this week's rewind Archive episode coming
- 7:54Speaker 1: your way right after this bonus episode. It's on Matt
- 7:56Speaker 1: give us a little drum roll, Go ahead, all right,
- 8:00Speaker 1: It's on Iggy Pop. David Bowie fans, you're not gonna
- 8:03Speaker 1: want to miss this one either. Bowie's a big part
- 8:06Speaker 1: of Iggy story. Bowe's a big part of this episode.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Lots of other cool people show up in this episode too,
- 8:11Speaker 1: Miles Davis, Dennis Hopper, bunch of our subjects. So if
- 8:15Speaker 1: you haven't heard our Iggy Pop episode, you're gonna love it,
- 8:17Speaker 1: and if you have, your in for a treat when
- 8:19Speaker 1: you re listen to it. Coming up after that on Tuesday,
- 8:22Speaker 1: we've got our episode on Winona Rider, and Winona is
- 8:25Speaker 1: the course pretty rock and roll, which is why we
- 8:27Speaker 1: thought to feature her in Disgraceland. Weina, however, is the
- 8:31Speaker 1: last of our icon series artists, and we'll eventually find
- 8:35Speaker 1: her way into the Hollywood Land archive as Disgraceland becomes
- 8:40Speaker 1: once again solely music content. But for now you've got
- 8:45Speaker 1: missus Johnny Depp, not really, but sort of coming your
- 8:48Speaker 1: way next week, Winona Rider. Okay, this all brings us
- 8:52Speaker 1: to next week's question of the week. When you're listening
- 8:54Speaker 1: to the Winona Rider episode, be thinking about all those
- 8:57Speaker 1: iconic eighties and nineties females arlt's and let me know
- 9:01Speaker 1: if Winona is gen X's most iconic female actor. If
- 9:05Speaker 1: not Winona, then who Drew Barrymore Cameron Diaz. Who is it?
- 9:10Speaker 1: Let me know? Six one, seven nine oh six sixty
- 9:12Speaker 1: six three eight. Heather Graham, Leave me a voicemail, Send
- 9:15Speaker 1: me a text. Not you, Heather Graham, You guys, semi
- 9:18Speaker 1: a voicemail? Leave me a text. Let me know if
- 9:20Speaker 1: Heather Graham is more iconic than Winona Rider or Drew Barrymore.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Who is it? Disgrace sampod on the socials? All right,
- 9:26Speaker 1: I'm gonna take a quick break. I'll be hanging on
- 9:27Speaker 1: the telephone on the other side with your voicemails, texts
- 9:30Speaker 1: and dms. Alright, six one, seven nine oh six six
- 9:51Speaker 1: six three eight. You know where I'm at him in
- 9:53Speaker 1: the phone booths. It's the one across the hall. I'm
- 9:54Speaker 1: hanging on the telephone. Who you want to send me
- 9:56Speaker 1: a voicemail? You want to send me a text? That's
- 9:58Speaker 1: how you do it. Let's check out this one from
- 10:01Speaker 1: who were looking at here? The seven six five?
- 10:04Speaker 2: Jake, what's up? It's metal Head Monday from the seven
- 10:08Speaker 2: six five, North Central Indiana coming at you. You asked
- 10:14Speaker 2: about artists that their follow up projects were better, more influential,
- 10:22Speaker 2: whatever than their original breakthrough projects. I'm gonna go with
- 10:28Speaker 2: Neil Young, dude, Buffalo Springfield. I mean, you know they
- 10:33Speaker 2: were good, they had a hit, right, But man, Neil
- 10:38Speaker 2: Young went on to become Neil Young, I mean totally influential,
- 10:45Speaker 2: great music, decades long career, still going, Neil Young all
- 10:51Speaker 2: the way, man.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Rock and roller metal head Monday. I appreciate you, brother.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Listen that kind of breaking my own rule here only
- 10:59Speaker 1: because look, Neil Young solo artists, so I'm not counting
- 11:03Speaker 1: the solo artists. I should have said that, I guess
- 11:04Speaker 1: when I posed the question, but I thought it was
- 11:06Speaker 1: obvious because the group piece of this is so key. However, Crosby, Stills,
- 11:11Speaker 1: Nash and whoever the fuck aka Neil Young, as I
- 11:15Speaker 1: once said, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, you could make
- 11:19Speaker 1: the argument that you're trying to make here for Neil
- 11:22Speaker 1: relevant to Buffalo Springfield's check out to two seven oh.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Hey Jay, not Jack. This is Todd, not Tim from
- 11:31Speaker 3: the two seven oh Nashville area.
- 11:35Speaker 4: But your question about the artist.
- 11:38Speaker 5: Who had a second band or whatever, impact or whatever,
- 11:43Speaker 5: it's probably an obvious choice. I guess I gotta go
- 11:46Speaker 5: with Dave Grohl. Does that count obviously?
- 11:50Speaker 4: Grummer for Nirvana and then frontman, main guy for the
- 11:54Speaker 4: Food Fighters.
- 11:55Speaker 3: I guess food Fighters not made, probably not as impactful,
- 12:00Speaker 3: but nonetheless, for thirty years now been very relevant.
- 12:06Speaker 5: Dave grows very relevant.
- 12:08Speaker 4: So anyway, I'm gonna go with that one, and maybe
- 12:13Speaker 4: a minor shout out to Josh Hamme who was in
- 12:17Speaker 4: Kius and then formed Queens of the Stone Age.
- 12:20Speaker 3: And that's probably a reach. Anyway, Thank you man, thank
- 12:23Speaker 3: you for your content as always, love it all.
- 12:26Speaker 6: Right, Todd not Tim, you know, yeah, I feel like
- 12:30Speaker 6: Food Fighters are so impactful despite their record sales not
- 12:33Speaker 6: being as much as Nirvana's, that it's hard not to
- 12:36Speaker 6: give it to him.
- 12:37Speaker 1: It's hard to go with Gorillas. I feel like if
- 12:38Speaker 1: you answered this question that I'm posing at a party
- 12:43Speaker 1: and came at people with Gorillas over Food Fighters, you
- 12:47Speaker 1: get shouted down. Just the Food Fighters. I guess it's
- 12:50Speaker 1: Dave Grohl's celebrity. He's just he's turned himself into something
- 12:56Speaker 1: that is beyond anything Damon Alburn had turned himself into
- 13:01Speaker 1: after Blur, and I guess the scale because Foo Fighters
- 13:05Speaker 1: have sold uh right around. That's weird too. They've only
- 13:09Speaker 1: sold as many albums as Gorillas. Crazy Crazy, I guess
- 13:14Speaker 1: gorillas are just huge internationally and I just have an
- 13:17Speaker 1: American point of view on this. I don't know. Fascinating
- 13:20Speaker 1: question though, Thanks Todd not Tim all right six seven
- 13:22Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight. You can send
- 13:24Speaker 1: me a voicemail like Todd not Tim, like like metal
- 13:27Speaker 1: Head Monday, or you can send me a text like
- 13:31Speaker 1: the nine oh nine who writes, Hey Jake, Luke here
- 13:34Speaker 1: with a quick note pursuing it to your Billie Idol
- 13:36Speaker 1: after party. I'm had a club to see a punk show.
- 13:39Speaker 1: The after show playlist includes one hundred punks by Generation
- 13:43Speaker 1: X nearly fifty years on, and it still kills this
- 13:46Speaker 1: bumper music after a punk show? Nine o nine thank
- 13:49Speaker 1: you for the text. Who'd you go see? I want
- 13:51Speaker 1: to know? Let me know anyone who wonders what nine
- 13:53Speaker 1: or nine is texting about, it's because we just had
- 13:55Speaker 1: this Billie Idol episode in our feed of Disgraceland. You
- 13:58Speaker 1: can check that out. One writes in Hey Jake, I
- 14:02Speaker 1: was listening to your thoughts on Marilyn Manson's autobiography and
- 14:05Speaker 1: I wanted to mention when will you get around to
- 14:07Speaker 1: doing a nine inch Nails episode. There's lots of debauchery
- 14:10Speaker 1: to be had anyway, I will keep listening, thank you,
- 14:12Speaker 1: and I want to well, yeah, I had the same
- 14:15Speaker 1: thought because Trent obviously is a big part of Marilyn
- 14:18Speaker 1: Manson's story. There's a lot of Trent debauchery in the
- 14:22Speaker 1: Marilyn Manson book. I do think a nine Inch Nails episode.
- 14:27Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know how soon on the
- 14:29Speaker 1: heels of Marilyn Manson, but soon ish, because I'm very interested.
- 14:33Speaker 1: For no other reason. Nine three seven, Jimmy Page has
- 14:36Speaker 1: to be the answer to the artist who had more
- 14:37Speaker 1: successful later group. What oh, I guess you're saying, yeah,
- 14:42Speaker 1: led Zeppelin compared to the Yardbirds. But the Yardbirds weren't
- 14:44Speaker 1: really Jimmy Page's group. I mean, he was in the group,
- 14:47Speaker 1: but you know what I'm saying. Nine three seven goes
- 14:49Speaker 1: on to say, speaking of led Zeppelin, I remember running
- 14:51Speaker 1: the streets of Boston with my walkman and I went
- 14:53Speaker 1: to switch out my Van Halen Fair Warning cassette with
- 14:55Speaker 1: the led Zeppelin cassette I had in the front of
- 14:57Speaker 1: my Champion hoodie and it was gone. I was devastated.
- 15:01Speaker 1: I only find peace with the hope that a young
- 15:03Speaker 1: kid perhaps found it and grew a love for music,
- 15:06Speaker 1: maybe even started playing music, and perhaps with any luck,
- 15:10Speaker 1: started a podcast about musicians behaving badly. But what's the
- 15:14Speaker 1: chance of that? Rock a rolla Bill from the nine
- 15:18Speaker 1: three seven. Bill's referring, of course, to the story I've
- 15:21Speaker 1: told before about how I got into led Zeppelin, which
- 15:24Speaker 1: was I was walking in my backyard one morning in
- 15:28Speaker 1: the fourth grade and I literally found led Zeppelin one
- 15:32Speaker 1: in cassette in the dewey grass. It was in its case,
- 15:36Speaker 1: so it was fine, and I brought it inside my
- 15:38Speaker 1: house and I put it in my stereo, and good Times,
- 15:42Speaker 1: Bad Times came on, and my life was forever changed
- 15:45Speaker 1: in that moment. Had never heard led Zeppelin before. And
- 15:50Speaker 1: I don't know, Bill, let's just let's say yeah, let's say, Bill,
- 15:54Speaker 1: we finally connected after all these years. But Boston to
- 15:58Speaker 1: where I grew up was about thirty five miles. Unless
- 16:01Speaker 1: it was on the wings of a geez, I don't know,
- 16:04Speaker 1: some led Zeppelin like medieval bird flying down across the
- 16:11Speaker 1: mass Turnpike out into the verbs. I doubt very much
- 16:14Speaker 1: that it's the same cassette, but I'm gonna believe it,
- 16:16Speaker 1: just for the just for the poetic license. Thank you
- 16:20Speaker 1: Bill six one seven nine oh six six six three
- 16:22Speaker 1: eight semi a voicemail or text disgracelam pod on the socials,
- 16:27Speaker 1: Ashley Neil writes in on Facebook, Jake, I've been listening
- 16:29Speaker 1: to Graceland since twenty twenty ish slogging at my shit job.
- 16:34Speaker 1: You have helped keep me sane. Love the content sincerely.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Meant to call in and give my take on the
- 16:38Speaker 1: question about the fave grunge band for the recent Alison
- 16:41Speaker 1: Chains Lane's Day episode, but didn't get around to it. Honestly,
- 16:44Speaker 1: Alison Chains is my favorite band. I was born in
- 16:46Speaker 1: nineteen eighty three and I kind of missed out on
- 16:48Speaker 1: them initially, but they've been a mainstay in my playlist
- 16:50Speaker 1: for my entire teen and adult life. Lane's raw, honestin
- 16:54Speaker 1: is lyrics paired with Jerry's guitar and harmonizing vocals just
- 16:57Speaker 1: speaks to my soul. That being said, I was kind
- 16:59Speaker 1: of no one gave Stone Temple Pilots a nod, even
- 17:03Speaker 1: though they didn't originate in Seattle. I feel like Core
- 17:06Speaker 1: and Scott Wiland in general really wove into that genre
- 17:08Speaker 1: beautifully and were excellent. What can I say, apparently my
- 17:11Speaker 1: favorite rock stars were all heroin addicts. Last thing, I've
- 17:14Speaker 1: been racking my brain trying to remember a band name
- 17:17Speaker 1: you mentioned as being rock and roll at a time
- 17:19Speaker 1: where a lot of us consider rock and roll to
- 17:20Speaker 1: be dead. Outside of the smaller scope, I feel like
- 17:23Speaker 1: it had a C in the name. It's low Cut,
- 17:25Speaker 1: Connie low Cut Connie Ashley, Okay. Another great band I've
- 17:30Speaker 1: been listening to lately, new band Geese. I'm sure you
- 17:33Speaker 1: guys have heard of it before. Not Goose, not the Goose Geese, Geese, Okay,
- 17:40Speaker 1: Stone Tip of Pilots not being mentioned in the top
- 17:42Speaker 1: ten greatest grunge bands. People have written in to voice
- 17:46Speaker 1: the same concern that Ashley has here. I left them
- 17:50Speaker 1: off my list because I like Stone Tip of Pilots,
- 17:54Speaker 1: but they were just so contrived when they came out.
- 17:56Speaker 1: They seemed like a elaborate version of what grunge should be,
- 18:02Speaker 1: and I think a lot of people feel that way.
- 18:05Speaker 1: I think a lot of people feel that way. Also,
- 18:08Speaker 1: not that I think not being from Seattle, so I'm
- 18:10Speaker 1: trying to say, has something to do with it. As
- 18:12Speaker 1: you mentioned, Ashley, Stone Tip of Pilots remind me of
- 18:15Speaker 1: like our generation's version of Creten's Clearwater Revival. Just like
- 18:20Speaker 1: a great band, but completely inauthentic, you know, like ccier
- 18:25Speaker 1: is thinking about growing up in the swamps of Louisiana
- 18:27Speaker 1: or whatever, and they're from fucking San Francisco or wherever
- 18:31Speaker 1: they're from, northern California. Just there weren't from the Bayou,
- 18:34Speaker 1: That's all I'm saying. And Stone type of pilots just
- 18:36Speaker 1: didn't seem like they were grunge beside the flannel. And
- 18:40Speaker 1: I guess the sound. I mean, I get it, I
- 18:43Speaker 1: get it, but I just I disassociate them with that
- 18:46Speaker 1: scene for some reason. And I suspect that others do
- 18:50Speaker 1: as well. Not to take anything away from Stone type
- 18:52Speaker 1: of pilots. I've grown to appreciate them. I did not
- 18:57Speaker 1: back in the day. I guess I kind of did
- 18:59Speaker 1: a grudge, but not on purpose. All right, guys, you
- 19:01Speaker 1: want to connect on social at disgracelam pod, on Facebook,
- 19:04Speaker 1: on Instagram, on X hit me up. All right, we
- 19:08Speaker 1: started doing this new thing in the after party last week.
- 19:11Speaker 1: We talk a lot here about voicemails. If you guys
- 19:13Speaker 1: want me on your voicemail, Yes, me myself and I
- 19:16Speaker 1: as the voice of your virtual answering machine, me recording
- 19:19Speaker 1: a message for you to have playing for whenever somebody
- 19:22Speaker 1: calls and you're not there to pick up the phone.
- 19:23Speaker 1: And honestly, who actually picks up the phone these days?
- 19:27Speaker 1: So voice messages are more important than ever, That's what
- 19:30Speaker 1: I'm saying. You know, something like, Hey, it's Jake from Disgraceland,
- 19:33Speaker 1: and you know Gary ain't here right now. Gary's off
- 19:36Speaker 1: at the replacement show. He can't come to the phone,
- 19:38Speaker 1: So leave a message. Okay, Gary, you fucking PERV. You
- 19:43Speaker 1: want me to leave your voicemail for you? I got you,
- 19:45Speaker 1: all right. Listen, here's how you make it happen.
- 19:47Speaker 7: Though.
- 19:47Speaker 1: You got to find the Easter egg. I was inspired
- 19:49Speaker 1: by Easter. Easter just happened. I hope you all had
- 19:52Speaker 1: a great holiday. He has risen christosiness from my Greek friends. Anyways,
- 19:58Speaker 1: I was inspired by Easter. I sninking East Easter eggs.
- 20:01Speaker 1: What can we do?
- 20:02Speaker 3: Oh?
- 20:02Speaker 1: I know what we can do. There's tons of Easter
- 20:04Speaker 1: eggs in our episodes. All I get to do is
- 20:07Speaker 1: find a question. Ask it here. You guys, dig into
- 20:11Speaker 1: the episode, pull out the Easter egg, hit me back
- 20:14Speaker 1: either on voicemail, on text or on the DMS. Although
- 20:18Speaker 1: this is the how you respond might change because I
- 20:22Speaker 1: don't know that the posting on social thing is going
- 20:24Speaker 1: to work because once you post it then everybody can
- 20:28Speaker 1: see it. The answer dig get a lot of texts,
- 20:31Speaker 1: dig get a lot of voicemails with the answer to
- 20:33Speaker 1: the Easter egg question, which was in the Sharon Tate
- 20:37Speaker 1: Part two episode of Hollywood Land. Who did Sharon Tate
- 20:40Speaker 1: ask for advice concerning her marital problems with Roman Polanski?
- 20:45Speaker 1: Who did Sharon seek out for advice? That was the
- 20:48Speaker 1: question and the answer comes from this week's winner, Ryan
- 20:52Speaker 1: in the two to eight to one.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Hey, this is Ryan from Houston.
- 20:57Speaker 2: The answer to your questions about egg healthy summer.
- 21:01Speaker 1: And there you go, Elkie Summer. That's the answer, Elkie Summer,
- 21:05Speaker 1: fellow actress friend of Sharon Tate. So Ryan, get in touch,
- 21:11Speaker 1: hit me back again. We will coordinate on how to
- 21:14Speaker 1: get you this recording for your voicemail. If you have
- 21:17Speaker 1: anything special you want me to say, we can work
- 21:19Speaker 1: all that out. You want me to leave something a
- 21:21Speaker 1: little curated, perhaps a little bespoke, I can do that.
- 21:25Speaker 1: You want me to cope with something on the fly.
- 21:27Speaker 1: I can do that as well. All Right, hit me back.
- 21:29Speaker 1: We'll get this going next week. Okay, you guys can
- 21:32Speaker 1: win next week. Okay, you can win. You can win
- 21:35Speaker 1: next time around. You know the spin at the wheel here, okay,
- 21:37Speaker 1: And the question is going to be in the Robin
- 21:39Speaker 1: Williams episode of this coming episode of hollywood Land. Okay,
- 21:43Speaker 1: we're coming up with a Robin Williams episode of hollywood Land.
- 21:46Speaker 1: In the most recent Robin Williams episode of hollywood Land,
- 21:50Speaker 1: the one that is at the top of your hollywood
- 21:52Speaker 1: Land feed right now, the question is no, I like
- 21:55Speaker 1: this one. I like this one because it's it's kind
- 21:57Speaker 1: of unintentionally in the form of a joke. Okay, here's
- 22:01Speaker 1: the question in the Hollywoodland episode on Robin Williams. What
- 22:04Speaker 1: did Robin Williams get from the prostitute when he turned
- 22:08Speaker 1: twenty one? Head over to Hollywoodland, dive into that Robin
- 22:10Speaker 1: Williams episode, find the answer and hit me at six
- 22:13Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight, Leave
- 22:15Speaker 1: me a voicemail, send me a text with your answer.
- 22:18Speaker 1: I guess We're still going to do this on social media.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Be the first to post on Instagram. We pose this question,
- 22:23Speaker 1: we'll see what happens, and again. The easter egg answer
- 22:27Speaker 1: is in the Robin Williams episode of Hollywood Land. The
- 22:29Speaker 1: question is what did Robin Williams get from the prostitute
- 22:32Speaker 1: when he turned twenty one? All right, now, for something
- 22:36Speaker 1: totally different, my quick sports rant here in under thirty seconds,
- 22:39Speaker 1: which is probably just gonna be a little longer than
- 22:41Speaker 1: thirty seconds. I showed my seven year old and my
- 22:42Speaker 1: eleven year old Major League with Charlie Sheen, basically because
- 22:47Speaker 1: they can't get enough baseball right now. And newsflash, this movie,
- 22:52Speaker 1: this movie isn't as wildly offensive as Bad News Bears,
- 22:55Speaker 1: which I love, by the way, but probably shouldn't have
- 22:56Speaker 1: shown to my kid when he was five. But a
- 23:00Speaker 1: League is a hard R. If you're wondering in eighties R.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Eighties ours are much harder than nineties or today's ours.
- 23:08Speaker 1: By the way, hard R would be a great name
- 23:11Speaker 1: for a band. Tough to pronounce, So right, hard R.
- 23:14Speaker 1: What's the name of your band? Hard R? What? Now?
- 23:16Speaker 1: It's not a good name? If you have to if
- 23:19Speaker 1: when you give the name of your band, the next
- 23:22Speaker 1: response is a question, it's not a good band name.
- 23:24Speaker 1: It's not a good name for anything actually that happens.
- 23:27Speaker 1: So anyways, we made it through with Jake Taylor and
- 23:29Speaker 1: the Wild Thing. My wife almost killed me before it
- 23:32Speaker 1: was over. But it's basically one sex scene, some naked
- 23:35Speaker 1: dude's asses in the in the locker room, and a
- 23:37Speaker 1: torrent of f bombs. You can navigate through it with
- 23:40Speaker 1: the remote, is what I'm saying. Okay, put your phone down.
- 23:43Speaker 1: You don't have to call Social Services on me. I'm
- 23:44Speaker 1: just saying, if you've got a baseball itch this spring
- 23:47Speaker 1: and there isn't a game on or your team sucks,
- 23:49Speaker 1: you can revisit Major League with your kids, even if
- 23:52Speaker 1: they're seven years old and your wife is you know,
- 23:54Speaker 1: semi cool and you don't mind scarring your kids for life.
- 23:57Speaker 1: All right, I'll be back in the flash to your
- 23:59Speaker 1: emails in the Hollywood Land Minute. All right, we are back,
- 24:16Speaker 1: and you know what time it is. It's time for
- 24:18Speaker 1: the hollywoodland Minute, brought to you by the Hollywood Lamb Podcast.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Don't know what the Hollywood Lamp podcast is? Well, the
- 24:22Speaker 1: Hollywood Lamb Podcast is hosted by Yours Truly, where every
- 24:25Speaker 1: week I tell you a story from the annex of
- 24:27Speaker 1: Hollywood and True crime, and right now there are over
- 24:29Speaker 1: forty episodes waiting for you to binge. Episodes on Charlie
- 24:32Speaker 1: she And, Robin Williams, David Lynch, John Waters, Danny Treo,
- 24:35Speaker 1: Meril Monroe, Steve McQueen, Drew Barrymore, Jane Fonda, and more recently,
- 24:39Speaker 1: the very talented and one of the dudes we miss
- 24:42Speaker 1: the most, Robin Williams. Here's a clip, Robin. I've been
- 24:47Speaker 1: trying to take it easy on the drugs after Belusi's death.
- 24:51Speaker 1: The sudden realization that he was going to have a
- 24:53Speaker 1: son made him finally get serious about sobriety, and he
- 24:55Speaker 1: quit boozing coke straight away. No twelve steps or therapy,
- 25:00Speaker 1: feel good programs, just cold turkey. A few weeks later,
- 25:04Speaker 1: his next movie, Outing the World According to Garb, hit theaters,
- 25:08Speaker 1: and the John Irving Book became an almost instant hit
- 25:11Speaker 1: at the box office. Things were finally looking up in
- 25:15Speaker 1: more ways than one. Later in life, in a letter
- 25:19Speaker 1: to his son Zach, Robin would write that his birth
- 25:22Speaker 1: gave him a new sense of meaning and focus into
- 25:24Speaker 1: his life. It also gave him plenty of new material.
- 25:28Speaker 1: My God, it's a boy and he's hung like a bear. Wait, no,
- 25:31Speaker 1: that's the umbilical cord. Of course, there were some habits
- 25:35Speaker 1: Robin still couldn't break. One was his addiction to the
- 25:39Speaker 1: rush of stand up comedy and the high that he
- 25:41Speaker 1: got from the crowd. He find any excuse to leave
- 25:44Speaker 1: Valerie behind with the baby Nappa and had to la
- 25:47Speaker 1: to indulge in another one of those infamous all night
- 25:49Speaker 1: comedy marathons. He even learned to enjoy them without the
- 25:52Speaker 1: help of mind altering substances, which brings us to the
- 25:57Speaker 1: other habit that Robin Williams couldn't break. Women, Robin had
- 26:02Speaker 1: always messed around in the past. Valerie would either give
- 26:05Speaker 1: him her blessing or at least forgive him. She knew
- 26:08Speaker 1: her husband was a star. She couldn't help the fact
- 26:10Speaker 1: that women threw themselves at him. Besides, he was out
- 26:13Speaker 1: on the road a lot all by himself. But after
- 26:16Speaker 1: Zach was born, it got harder for her to go
- 26:18Speaker 1: along with it. She resented the fact that she was
- 26:21Speaker 1: stuck at home with a baby while her husband was
- 26:23Speaker 1: off gallimanding with some hot young thing. And Robin wasn't dumb.
- 26:27Speaker 1: He knew it was getting to her. He tried to
- 26:29Speaker 1: keep it in his pants for a while, but then
- 26:32Speaker 1: another opportunity would present itself, and as Valerie once said,
- 26:35Speaker 1: you'd have to be a saint to resist, and Robin
- 26:39Speaker 1: was certainly no saint. God gave him a penis in
- 26:41Speaker 1: her brain and only enough blood to use one at
- 26:43Speaker 1: a time. Our guests, make sure you are subscribed to
- 26:46Speaker 1: Hollywood Land on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get
- 26:50Speaker 1: your podcasts. Next week we have an episode on Phil
- 26:53Speaker 1: Hartman coming your way, and you are not going to
- 26:56Speaker 1: want to miss that one. Okay, disgrace Sampod at Gmail.
- 27:00Speaker 1: You guys want to hit me up about anything in
- 27:01Speaker 1: the disgrace Land universe, that's that's a good way of
- 27:04Speaker 1: doing it. Some people don't like the voicemails. Some people
- 27:06Speaker 1: don't like the text machine. Some people like a good
- 27:09Speaker 1: old fashioned email. Disgracelampod at gmail dot com. Okay, Jacques
- 27:15Speaker 1: Kobel writes in The Cramps Slash rock and Roll is dead, sir,
- 27:20Speaker 1: while listening to your podcast, I have been digesting your
- 27:22Speaker 1: thoughts on music and art for the past week. I
- 27:26Speaker 1: have let it randomly play on Spotify throughout my workday.
- 27:29Speaker 1: I see validity at most every point you make save one,
- 27:33Speaker 1: rock is dead. My first thought was Blue October and
- 27:37Speaker 1: the song hate Me lyrics that make Hollandwolf, Bruce Springsteen,
- 27:42Speaker 1: and Robert Zimmermann blush at the shallowness of their own lyrics.
- 27:46Speaker 1: The music is canned, the vocals are auto tuned, but
- 27:48Speaker 1: the poetry is dangerous. Thank you. Well, I don't know
- 27:53Speaker 1: about Blue October, but now I'm interested. Colin Old, Bobby
- 27:57Speaker 1: de and Bruce Springsteen and Hollandwolf them some fighting words.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Are you sure you want me to get into this?
- 28:04Speaker 1: Appreciate you, Jack. You obviously thought about this question for
- 28:07Speaker 1: some time. Michael Murphy writes in Yo, Jake, I'm just
- 28:09Speaker 1: wondering what happens once you've exhausted the Hollywood Land and Sportsland,
- 28:13Speaker 1: sides of the Badlands archive and all access icons material.
- 28:17Speaker 1: What do you do for those rare celebrities you have
- 28:19Speaker 1: touched on all three areas sports, film, and music. I
- 28:23Speaker 1: know you did the Rock, but I'm thinking Hell Hogan,
- 28:25Speaker 1: Dennis Rodman, Shack Nald maybe others. Let me know what
- 28:28Speaker 1: you think. Rock a Roller Arnold Schwarzenegger, Well, come on,
- 28:31Speaker 1: I mean, he could be Hollywood Land and Shaq and
- 28:35Speaker 1: Dennis Rodman, Hulk Hogan, they're all athletes, so obviously Sportsland man.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Come on, I think what you're getting at here, Michael,
- 28:45Speaker 1: is we need to make some new episodes. Is that
- 28:48Speaker 1: what you're saying, Michael? Are you daring me to make
- 28:52Speaker 1: even more content? Michael more? Sportsland content? Is this? Are
- 28:57Speaker 1: you throwing down the gauntlet? Is that what's happening here,
- 28:59Speaker 1: Michael More? Perhaps even more Hollywood Land content, maybe these feeds.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Maybe what happens is once once the Badlands archive is exhausted,
- 29:09Speaker 1: as you say, once once these these all these archive
- 29:13Speaker 1: episodes have been once again re released in the Hollywood
- 29:16Speaker 1: Land feed. Maybe there's a Sportsland feed. Maybe there are
- 29:20Speaker 1: new episodes in our future to keep these franchises humming,
- 29:25Speaker 1: just as we're doing this Disgraceland. Maybe that's what's happening, Michael.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I don't know, just the thought we shall see Disgrace
- 29:33Speaker 1: lampod at gmail dot com. You want to email me.
- 29:35Speaker 1: I appreciate it, just like I appreciate those reviews. You
- 29:37Speaker 1: know about the reviews. They help with discovery, They help
- 29:39Speaker 1: the show grow, They help people find Disgraceland, which is
- 29:42Speaker 1: so important. We are independent we are out there, moving
- 29:45Speaker 1: and shaking on our own, and in order for this
- 29:47Speaker 1: show to grow, we need your help and that comes
- 29:50Speaker 1: in the form of reviews, and we appreciate it so so, so,
- 29:54Speaker 1: so much, so much that when you leave a review,
- 29:56Speaker 1: if I read it here on the after Party Bonus episode,
