- 0:02Speaker 1: Especially when it comes to... I want to talk about
- 0:04Speaker 1: the situation with Tennessee and their starting quarterback because they
- 0:07Speaker 1: actually came to a determination, but there's so much to
- 0:09Speaker 1: be excited about when it comes to college football in
- 0:12Speaker 1: general this season. I'm just dying to get to the
- 0:15Speaker 1: games because I'm tired of talking about all the legalese
- 0:18Speaker 1: and all these things. So, Cole, I would love to
- 0:21Speaker 1: get your feelings on the new Tennessee starting quarterback in
- 0:24Speaker 1: our segment presented by PrizePix.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Well, while Cole's out, I'll tell you... my quick thoughts,
- 0:30Speaker 2: Tennessee made the right call here. Absolutely made the right
- 0:33Speaker 2: call with going a phase on Brandon. Not only do
- 0:36Speaker 2: I think he has the higher ceiling, I think this
- 0:39Speaker 2: is a kid who once or twice a week, you,
- 0:42Speaker 2: you may get some freshmen mistakes. You are going to
- 0:45Speaker 2: scratch your head and say, how in the world did
- 0:47Speaker 2: he just do that? I also think that when you've
- 0:49Speaker 2: got a player who has the talent around him that
- 0:54Speaker 2: he has, which we talked about this last week, you
- 0:56Speaker 2: could not have done a better job here. And, and, listen,
- 1:00Speaker 2: I very rarely get things right. We were all kind
- 1:02Speaker 2: of in agreement last week. This needs to be phased
- 1:04Speaker 2: on Brandon's job. This needs to be the direction that
- 1:07Speaker 2: they go because they're kind of playing with a little
- 1:10Speaker 2: house money this year. If they go seven to five, they're,
- 1:12Speaker 2: they're not firing Josh. It's all setting up for the future.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I think they made a great call here with going with, uh, Brandon.
- 1:19Speaker 2: I think he fits what they want to do a
- 1:20Speaker 2: little bit better. And so I'm glad that Josh Hypo
- 1:22Speaker 2: ultimately listened to me and went with Brandon as the starter. Cole,
- 1:25Speaker 2: I'll let you go from there.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Um, Yeah, I was higher on Brandon than both of you.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I may have thought he was going to be the
- 1:31Speaker 3: starter by the end of camp. I truly was bought
- 1:34Speaker 3: into him being the guy long-term because of just things
- 1:37Speaker 3: that he does that gives you an upside. I think
- 1:39Speaker 3: the main takeaway here is that when it's this late
- 1:42Speaker 3: in the process and you're neck and neck, you got
- 1:45Speaker 3: to go with the player that has more upside. And
- 1:46Speaker 3: the more potential is a guy like Faison Brandon. Great arm,
- 1:50Speaker 3: by the way. Phenomenal arm.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Good mechanics. Good solid footwork. Things that you would love
- 1:55Speaker 4: to see in an offense.
- 1:57Speaker 3: I am incredibly excited to see what he can do
- 2:00Speaker 3: this upcoming season. But you throw in the mobility aspect
- 2:03Speaker 3: of things, too. That's the main thing I look for.
- 2:06Speaker 3: You got a 214-pound, 6'4 linebacker versus a guy that's
- 2:10Speaker 3: built like a twig in George McIntyre.
- 2:12Speaker 4: So now that you know that you can run.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Your system pretty convincingly with a quarterback that is really
- 2:18Speaker 3: well-designed to, I think, work for Josh Heupel, this just
- 2:21Speaker 3: gives you a slight edge. And the other thing that
- 2:23Speaker 3: I think people need to be throwing out there is
- 2:25Speaker 3: Josh Heupel with young quarterbacks has been successful in the past.
- 2:29Speaker 4: Multiple times.
- 2:30Speaker 3: When you look at Drew Locke when he was the
- 2:31Speaker 3: OC at Mizzou. When you look at his time with
- 2:34Speaker 3: Dylan Gabriel. When you look at his time with Sam Bradford.
- 2:37Speaker 3: When you look at his time even with veterans like
- 2:38Speaker 3: Hendon Hooker and such. He has been able to work
- 2:41Speaker 3: with first-year starting quarterbacks and be able to get the
- 2:43Speaker 3: best version out of them.
- 2:45Speaker 4: It's slam dunk move. I love this for Tennessee.
- 2:48Speaker 3: I don't know if you're going to be able to
- 2:50Speaker 3: get to 9, 10 wins, but I sure as hell
- 2:52Speaker 3: think that you have a lot more upside, and we will,
- 2:54Speaker 3: by the season's end, be saying a lot more promising
- 2:56Speaker 3: things about the future of Tennessee football because of who's
- 3:00Speaker 3: starting under center.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Hey, guys, I'll get right back to the clip, but
- 3:02Speaker 2: first I want to tell you about our friends over
- 3:03Speaker 2: at Price Picks. Look at what is right next to me.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Actual game lineups, real more or less totals that you
- 3:10Speaker 2: can pick right now. Give me the more on Ashton
- 3:13Speaker 2: Daniels is rushing yards for Florida state and give me
- 3:16Speaker 2: the more on CJ Bailey's passing touchdowns for NC state.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Very much an ACC theme going with this one. You
- 3:23Speaker 2: can pick things from games that are actually happening this weekend.
- 3:26Speaker 2: No more season totals, no more national champs or make
- 3:30Speaker 2: the playoff or win this conference. Actual games are happening
- 3:33Speaker 2: this week and we could not be more excited. Use
- 3:35Speaker 2: the Price Picks app. Play $ 5 and win that first
- 3:38Speaker 2: lineup using code HMA, and you get $ 150 in lineups instantly. Again,
- 3:43Speaker 2: all new users get that deal if you win that
- 3:45Speaker 2: first lineup. Go check out the Price Picks app. Make
- 3:48Speaker 2: sure that you are subscribed, both here on College Football
- 3:50Speaker 2: Addiction and to The Power 2, which I've collabed this
- 3:53Speaker 2: video with. We appreciate Price Picks for their support.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Now back to the clip.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Tom, we were all kind of big on Brandon here,
- 4:00Speaker 2: and I do agree. Cole was our pole position. He
- 4:03Speaker 2: was our leader on this, but when you have the
- 4:06Speaker 2: decision to go with the slightly more experienced or the
- 4:12Speaker 2: higher ceiling, honestly, we'll talk about Bama here in just
- 4:16Speaker 2: a minute. It looks like two of the three teams
- 4:18Speaker 2: did that. Now, I think that Florida might be our
- 4:20Speaker 2: exception to the rule when we're not doing them, but
- 4:23Speaker 2: they may have gone a little bit different of a route,
- 4:25Speaker 2: but just thoughts around the decision here on Brandon.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I like the choice overall. I think Brandon gives you
- 4:33Speaker 1: more and it's nothing against McIntyre. And it also is
- 4:36Speaker 1: a situation I think more so now in the history
- 4:40Speaker 1: of college football, you're going to get to these younger
- 4:43Speaker 1: players faster than ever before. So the concept of, even
- 4:47Speaker 1: if you started McIntyre and then you worked your way
- 4:50Speaker 1: to phase on Brandon, it was probably in the, in
- 4:53Speaker 1: the inevitability, looking at their schedule, you open up against Furman.
- 4:56Speaker 1: So not necessarily going to be too difficult there. You
- 4:59Speaker 1: go on the road against Georgia tech in your second
- 5:02Speaker 1: game of the season that I expect to be a
- 5:05Speaker 1: challenging game. I expect Georgia tech to put up a fight.
- 5:08Speaker 1: I do expect Tennessee to win that game, regardless of
- 5:11Speaker 1: who's a quarterback, but I like the idea of putting
- 5:14Speaker 1: Brandon into that situation before the you host Texas in
- 5:18Speaker 1: your fourth game of the season, and you really open
- 5:21Speaker 1: up SEC play with that game, obviously. So you have
- 5:24Speaker 1: Kennesaw State in between the Georgia Tech and the Texas game.
- 5:27Speaker 1: So you have a little bit of a runway here
- 5:29Speaker 1: for Faison Brandon, but considering that the supporting cast is talented,
- 5:34Speaker 1: but still there's question marks at different positions, there's question
- 5:37Speaker 1: marks on the defense, as we talked about, there's been
- 5:39Speaker 1: a handful of injuries, the Chaz Coleman debacle, Arian Carter
- 5:43Speaker 1: is potentially going to be missing. I think this is
- 5:46Speaker 1: setting up Tennessee for the best-case scenario for their young
- 5:50Speaker 1: quarterback to develop early and develop quickly. What the expectations
- 5:54Speaker 1: are in Knoxville in terms of what he could potentially
- 5:56Speaker 1: lead them to, I'm not entirely sure of that. But
- 5:58Speaker 1: at the same time, I think this is just where
- 6:01Speaker 1: they were inevitably going to go anyway, so you might
- 6:03Speaker 1: as well just get to it and get the guy
- 6:05Speaker 1: who can potentially get you out of some situations if
- 6:08Speaker 1: things break down. His athletic gifts can give Tennessee more
- 6:12Speaker 1: options on the field.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Cole, where is the ceiling for Tennessee now that this
- 6:17Speaker 2: announcement is official and we kind of know what their
- 6:19Speaker 2: roster looks like?
- 6:21Speaker 4: I think probably 10-2 is the ceiling.
- 6:23Speaker 3: If you get everything going defensively, if you're able to
- 6:25Speaker 3: go ahead and have Faison Brandon look like a veteran
- 6:28Speaker 3: quarterback by the season's end, it's a manageable schedule. There's
- 6:32Speaker 3: not a lot of trap games. You do have to
- 6:33Speaker 3: walk him in Alabama defensively. You do have to go
- 6:35Speaker 3: face-off against Texas. You still have matchups where you have
- 6:39Speaker 3: to face-off against Texas A & M down in College Station.
- 6:42Speaker 3: I'm not ready to go ahead and just say it's
- 6:44Speaker 3: a slam-dunk win for you against Georgia Tech, but I
- 6:47Speaker 3: texted a buddy of mine yesterday, and I asked him,
- 6:49Speaker 3: what's the deal with Alberto Mendoza?
- 6:51Speaker 4: And they said... He's good. He's not his brother. So
- 6:54Speaker 4: you got to feel a lot better about that part.
- 6:56Speaker 3: I think that you're looking at about a nine-win campaign
- 6:58Speaker 3: minimum would be the ceiling. If everything goes according to plan,
- 7:02Speaker 3: dark horse for the college football playoff. It's going to
- 7:06Speaker 3: be a lot of learning on the fly and growing
- 7:09Speaker 3: from your mistakes.
- 7:11Speaker 4: But the talent is there in Knoxville. The talent is there.
