- 0:17Speaker 1: right now with Linda Wheeler with Operation Christmas Child. And
- 0:21Speaker 1: I'm excited for this thing that you guys do each
- 0:23Speaker 1: and every year. It's such an amazing thing that you do.
- 0:25Speaker 1: And for folks that have no idea and they're going,
- 0:28Speaker 1: what is Operation Christmas Child? Let's give them a brief
- 0:30Speaker 1: snapshot right now of what you do and why you
- 0:33Speaker 1: do it. Okay.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan's Purse that
- 0:39Speaker 2: collects shoebox gifts filled with fun toys, school supplies, and
- 0:43Speaker 2: personal care items. and they deliver them to children in
- 0:47Speaker 2: need around the world to demonstrate God's love in a
- 0:50Speaker 2: tangible way. Many of these children have never received a
- 0:55Speaker 2: gift before. It might be the first and only gift
- 0:58Speaker 2: they ever received. This started in 1993 with Franklin Graham,
- 1:04Speaker 2: and since then, over 244 million children have received a
- 1:09Speaker 2: shoebox through Operation Christmas Child.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Yeah, this is such a neat thing, and it can
- 1:13Speaker 1: be life-changing. When you think about how silly it sounds
- 1:16Speaker 1: to say a gift can be life-changing, but it really
- 1:19Speaker 1: can be life-changing for the kid, can it?
- 1:22Speaker 2: It sure can. Sometimes they are receiving gifts that they
- 1:28Speaker 2: have been wanting for forever, and all of a sudden
- 1:32Speaker 2: a shoebox shows up with the exact thing that they need.
- 1:35Speaker 2: We've always told a story about a little boy in
- 1:40Speaker 2: Mexico that was too embarrassed to go to the event
- 1:45Speaker 2: and he didn't have any shoes. So he's wearing his
- 1:47Speaker 2: mom's shoes. And when he opened up his box, there
- 1:50Speaker 2: was a pair of shoes in there, the exact right
- 1:52Speaker 2: size for him. So that kind of thing happens all
- 1:55Speaker 2: the time, all over the world that we hear stories
- 1:58Speaker 2: about that kids are receiving things in their boxes. And
- 2:01Speaker 2: that's just a great way to share the love of
- 2:04Speaker 2: Christ with these kids.
- 2:06Speaker 1: That is really cool. Now, here's the reason that we
- 2:08Speaker 1: wanted to talk about this here. There's an opportunity for
- 2:12Speaker 1: each and every person listening to get involved and help
- 2:15Speaker 1: put the items in these boxes and have the things
- 2:18Speaker 1: to send. And that's right now. I know we're thinking, Christmas,
- 2:22Speaker 1: that's a long ways away. Well, right now is when
- 2:24Speaker 1: you get prepared. If somebody listening is going, I would
- 2:26Speaker 1: like to get involved, what is the best first step
- 2:28Speaker 1: for them, Linda?
- 2:30Speaker 2: The best thing for them to do is to find
- 2:32Speaker 2: a standard size shoe box. And fill it with toys,
- 2:36Speaker 2: school supplies, just basic personal care items like a toothbrush
- 2:41Speaker 2: and a washcloth. We can't put any liquids or anything
- 2:44Speaker 2: like that in, so no toothpaste. But toys and school
- 2:47Speaker 2: supplies are the best things to put in the box.
- 2:51Speaker 2: And then during the week of National Collection Week, which
- 2:54Speaker 2: is November 16th through the 23rd, there's a drop-off location
- 2:59Speaker 2: here in Sioux Falls at First Evangelical Free Church. And
- 3:04Speaker 2: we collect those boxes all week and they get sent
- 3:07Speaker 2: off to the processing centers and then they get sent
- 3:10Speaker 2: to the kids. I love that.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Now, if you would like to get some more information
- 3:14Speaker 1: on this, they have a step by step guide online.
- 3:17Speaker 1: This was sent to me about a week ago. I
- 3:19Speaker 1: saw it and I said, OK, I want to make
- 3:20Speaker 1: sure we talk about this because every year. I see
- 3:23Speaker 1: this happening. I always think it's wonderful. And I've had
- 3:25Speaker 1: a chance to visit with people about this in the past.
- 3:27Speaker 1: And a couple of years ago, there was a movie
- 3:29Speaker 1: that was made and it very much was around this
- 3:32Speaker 1: Operation Christmas Child. And it was based on a true story.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And I got to do an interview with some of
- 3:36Speaker 1: the people in the movie. And I just thought this
- 3:38Speaker 1: is such a neat thing. It's such a great thing.
- 3:40Speaker 1: And I thought, boy, instead of waiting until it's too late,
- 3:43Speaker 1: let's talk about it now. So, Linda, thank you for
- 3:44Speaker 1: taking the time to visit. And I'm going to share
- 3:47Speaker 1: that website on our social media to make it easy
- 3:49Speaker 1: for for people to find. Are you looking for volunteers
- 3:52Speaker 1: right now? Are you looking for gifts right now? What
- 3:54Speaker 1: would be the best thing we can do to help?
- 3:56Speaker 2: We would love it if everybody would pack a shoebox
- 3:59Speaker 2: and drop it off. And if anybody's interested in volunteering,
- 4:03Speaker 2: even just a short term, they can contact me. And
- 4:07Speaker 2: then we have lots of year-round volunteer opportunities available, too,
- 4:13Speaker 2: through the year-round team. And they can contact me for
- 4:16Speaker 2: that information as well. Or they can fill out on
- 4:20Speaker 2: the Samaritan's Purse website, they can fill out an information
- 4:23Speaker 2: form and it will get directed to me and I
- 4:26Speaker 2: can contact them.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Well, thank you so much for doing what you're doing.
- 4:30Speaker 1: And thank you for, again, all of the kindness that
- 4:33Speaker 1: gets packed into these boxes and shipped overseas to people
- 4:36Speaker 1: who need it. It's just a beautiful thing. So thank
- 4:38Speaker 1: you for your involvement.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Yes. All right. Thank you so much.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Folks, if you would like to get involved, again, you
- 4:43Speaker 1: can do that by packing a shoebox. I've got a
- 4:45Speaker 1: link to the story that kind of has the details
- 4:47Speaker 1: on how to do that and how to get everything.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Or if you're saying, hey, I'd like to help on
- 4:50Speaker 1: National Collection Week, November 16th through the 23rd, I've got
- 4:54Speaker 1: the information on how to reach out and be a
- 4:55Speaker 1: part of that. It's all on the website, or the
- 4:58Speaker 1: Facebook page, rather. There's a link to their website on
- 5:00Speaker 1: our Facebook page. That's what I'm trying to say. Facebook.com
