- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. We are in our
- 0:02week three of our series of freedom. And so let
- 0:08me tell you that this episode is not just for
- 0:12you, but it's also for me. Because today we're
- 0:15gonna be talking about the things that connects
- 0:18all of our podcasts kind of together that we've
- 0:21been talking about. And it's about control together
- 0:24that we've been talking about. And it's about
- 0:27control. the need to manage every outcome, the
- 0:30grip, the mental load of running every scenario
- 0:33before it happens, the exhaustion of being the
- 0:36one who holds it all together, your family, your
- 0:38schedule, your future, other people's choices,
- 0:41other people's feelings, and the quiet belief
- 0:45and burden underneath everything that if you
- 0:47would loosen your hand up for just one second,
- 0:50that it's all gonna fall apart. And can I be
- 0:52honest? that this episode while preparing for
- 0:56it and it really is just, I kind of needed this.
- 1:01And so I'm a doer, I'm a planner. I love the
- 1:03color coded calendars. I have a calendar on my
- 1:06phone. I make a calendar every two to three weeks
- 1:08on for the family. And some of you know exactly
- 1:12what I'm talking about. And there's nothing wrong
- 1:14with being organized and diligent. Scripture
- 1:15actually commands it. But there's a line, and
- 1:18most of us have crossed it without even noticing
- 1:20it. Where healthy stewardship becomes something
- 1:23else. Where planning becomes gripping. Where
- 1:26responsibility becomes like a low -grade, always
- 1:29-running attempt to be God in our own lives.
- 1:34And here's the why things belong in this series
- 1:37on freedom. The need to control feels like power,
- 1:41but it functions like a prison. And you don't
- 1:46and cannot be free and be the one holding everything
- 1:50up at the same time. Those two things cannot
- 1:53coexist. So today we're going to name it, trace
- 1:57it back to its roots and look hard at what scripture
- 1:59says about surrendering, including the single
- 2:03greatest act of surrender in human history. and
- 2:06to get kind of practical what it looks like to
- 2:09actually let go. So grab your book book and we
- 2:12have those on the Fostering Faith website. So
- 2:14make sure that we can follow along with those
- 2:17and let's pray. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you
- 2:19so much for allowing us to just come together
- 2:21today. Thank you for these listeners. Thank you
- 2:23that I am just using scripture just to just refresh
- 2:29the tired person that's listening to this. Not
- 2:32tired from doing little, but from tired from
- 2:34caring. what was never theirs to carry. You see
- 2:38their hands, you see they're clenched for years.
- 2:41I'm asking you and the Holy Spirit to gently
- 2:43just pray them and pry their hands open today.
- 2:48I'm asking you and the Holy Spirit, in Jesus'
- 2:50name I pray. Amen. And so let's get into it.
- 2:53And so the first thing that we have to establish
- 2:55is I want to say it plainly. The control you
- 2:59think you have is mostly an illusion. And it's
- 3:04not me being dramatic. That is what the Bible
- 3:07claims. And honestly, it's an observable one.
- 3:11Think about the last year of your life, how much
- 3:14of what actually happened, the good, the hard,
- 3:17did you plan? The phone call that you didn't
- 3:21see coming, the opportunity that showed up out
- 3:23of nowhere, the thing you prayed against and
- 3:26it happened anyway, and the thing that you feared
- 3:28that never did. We spend an enormous amount of
- 3:32energy trying to steer our life that is repeatedly
- 3:35proven. It is not Searable James addressed this
- 3:41head -on and he does it not softly and so James
- 3:44for their 13 through 15. It says now listen You
- 3:49who say, today or tomorrow we will go to the
- 3:52city, spend a year there, carry on business and
- 3:55make money. Why would you even know what will
- 3:58be happening tomorrow? What is your life? You
- 4:01are a mist until that appears for a little while
- 4:05and vanishes instead. You ought to say, if the
- 4:07Lord's will, we will live there or do this or
- 4:10do that. Notice, James is not rebuking planning.
- 4:14The people he's describing are doing reasonable
- 4:17things, business, travel, a year -long strategy.
- 4:22What he confronts is the posture, the planning,
- 4:25as though tomorrow is guaranteed and the outcomes
- 4:27are at our command. His correction is one small
- 4:31phrase, if it is the Lord's will. That phrase
- 4:35is not fatalism, it's realism. And it is the
- 4:40daily verbal acknowledge that God holds what
- 4:44we do not. The word James used there is for mist
- 4:48is a vapor, a steam, a fog that often burns off
- 4:53in the mid morning. That's the picture. Not because
- 4:56life doesn't matter. It matters enormously. But
- 4:59because your control is over it, it's that thin.
- 5:04And so here's what I want you to see. Control
- 5:06is not really about the outcomes. Control is
- 5:09a counterfeit piece. It's a thing that we reach
- 5:12for whenever we don't feel the vulnerability
- 5:15of not knowing. When I have a plan, every contingency,
- 5:22I get to feel safe. When I manage everyone around
- 5:26me, I feel secure. And control promises the same
- 5:30thing that God promises. You'll be okay. But
- 5:33it demands that I be the one who makes it true.
- 5:37And that's why control and anxiety are so tightly
- 5:41braided together. Remember, whenever we talked
- 5:44about the anxiety and the fear untethered, spinning
- 5:47scenarios with the future that you cannot see.
- 5:50Control is what anxiety does with its hands.
- 5:53Anxiety says something might go wrong. Control
- 5:56says, then I'll manage everything so it can't.
- 6:01And one of the feelings and the other coping
- 6:04mechanisms, neither one delivers. And so Proverbs
- 6:0816, 9 says, puts the reality into one sentence,
- 6:12in their hearts, humans plan their course, but
- 6:16the Lord establishes their steps. And Proverbs
- 6:1919, 21 says it again, even more directly, many
- 6:23are the plans of a person's heart, but it is
- 6:26the Lord's purpose that will prevail. Say what
- 6:29those words, prevail. not competes, not negotiates,
- 6:36prevails. God's purpose is not one opinion on
- 6:41a table alongside a five -year plan. It is a
- 6:44thing that will stand when everything else shifts,
- 6:47and a friend that is either terrifying news or
- 6:51the best news that you've ever heard, depending
- 6:53on the entirety of what you actually believe
- 6:56his character. If God is distant, careless or
- 7:01stingy, then his purpose prevailing is a threat.
- 7:04And gripping tighter makes sense. But if God
- 7:07is good, attentive, and for you, then his purpose
- 7:12prevailing is safety, things that could possibly
- 7:15be the true about your life. And letting go is
- 7:19not just a cross security. It's not law security.
- 7:22It is a transferring of it from his hands, from
- 7:25your hands to his hands. From hands that shake
- 7:28to hands that don't. And so where does control
- 7:35show up in your life? Be specific and honest.
- 7:39Is it over planning? Is it micromanaging people
- 7:41that you love? Refusing to delegate? Rehearsing
- 7:45conversations before they even happen? Meaning
- 7:48to know the outcome before you say anything?
- 7:51Name that specific version of your grip. you
- 7:54can't surrender what we can't, the name. And
- 7:57I, going back up there where it said, if God,
- 8:00that distant, if God is distant, careless and
- 8:02stingy, and I was doing my run today and I posted
- 8:06a reel on it and it was about, I was running
- 8:08and I was a couple miles from the house and I
- 8:10had turned around and in the distance there was
- 8:13this thing and I was like, I couldn't really
- 8:14see what it was and it was against some woods
- 8:17and I was like, oh my gosh, is that a person?
- 8:19And so I kept on running and just kind of looking
- 8:21at it. I was kind of scared, but kind of not.
- 8:23And then I noticed it and it was just like, the
- 8:26Holy Spirit was just like, man, that's how some
- 8:30people can view God. Off in the distance, we
- 8:33don't know what it is. It's kind of scary. Is
- 8:35it meant to harm me? What is it? And then I got
- 8:37onto the thing and it was like, beware of flood
- 8:40sign. And so again, it's just once we get close
- 8:44to Him, once we know Him, we really see, hey,
- 8:47this is a sign. This is, hey, I want your attention.
- 8:50I'm trying to protect you. I'm here. I'm putting
- 8:52out warning signs. I'm right here. And so I think
- 8:54that as we walk in scripture, as we walk through
- 8:57the Bible, as we become intimate with God, we
- 9:01understand that He is here for us and not against
- 9:03us. He's not this distant off God. He's a relational
- 9:06God. And so I think that's so important for us
- 9:09to understand. And the root of why we grab what
- 9:13isn't ours. And so let's trace it to the roots
- 9:16because the need of control is not a personality
- 9:20cork. It's a spiritual condition with a history
- 9:24and the history goes all the way back to the
- 9:26garden. Think about what actually happened in
- 9:28Genesis 3. The serpent's temptation to Eve was
- 9:30not do something evil. It was subtler, more familiar
- 9:36than that. Would you like? Will you be like God?
- 9:42knowing good and evil in Genesis 3 -5, the offer
- 9:45was self -rule. The offer was, you don't have
- 9:49to trust his word about what's good. You can
- 9:53hold that knowledge yourself. You can run this.
- 9:57And humanity reached out and grabbed it. And
- 10:00the grab is all in all of us. Every act of control
- 10:04is a small echo of Eden, a moment where trusting
- 10:08God's management of my life feels a little too
- 10:11risky. So I'll take the fruit. I'll take the
- 10:14wheel and I'll take it over. But I want to show
- 10:17you what taking over actually produces. And for
- 10:20what I to look at the story and what I think
- 10:24is one of the most honest portrayals of control
- 10:27in scripture. Sarah in Genesis 16. So here's
- 10:33the setup. The quick note is at this point in
- 10:36the story, she's still was called Sarah I and
- 10:40Abram before God renames him. But I'll say Sarah
- 10:44and Abram so we don't get tangled in that mess.
- 10:47And so God made Abraham a staggering promise,
- 10:51descendants like the stars, the son from his
- 10:54own body. But years pass, then more years. And
- 10:58Sarah is aging past any natural possibility of
- 11:01having kids. And the promise is just sitting
- 11:03there, unfilled and silent. And Genesis 16 records
- 11:09that she does what she does with the silence.
- 11:13And so she takes her Egyptian servant, Hagar,
- 11:16gives her to Abraham so that a child might come
- 11:21through her instead. And listen, for her reasoning
- 11:25in verse two, the Lord has kept me from having
- 11:28children. Go sleep with my slave. Perhaps I can
- 11:32build a family through her. Perhaps I can build.
- 11:36Underline those words in your mind Sarah is not
- 11:38abandoning God's promise. She believes it But
- 11:42she but she's abandoning the God's timing and
- 11:45God's method her logic is one control organizing
- 11:49Instantly God is clearly not moving fast enough.
- 11:53So I'll help him. I'll build It myself. I'll
- 11:57make it happen through my own arrangements through
- 12:00my own management through my own plan B and it
- 12:03works In the narrowest sense, a child was born.
- 12:08The plan succeeds and produced contempt between
- 12:12two women, anguishing for Hagar, division of
- 12:18the household, and pain that echoes for generations.
- 12:22Control got Sarah an outcome. It could not get
- 12:28her the promise, because the promise was never
- 12:32hers to manufacture. 13 chapters and 25 years
- 12:37of her waiting later, God fulfills his word exactly
- 12:40the way that he said he would. Through Sarah,
- 12:45at an appointed time, she names the boy Isaac,
- 12:50which is laughter. And here's the diagnosis underneath
- 12:53the story, and I want you to hear it gently but
- 12:56clearly. At the root of control is a quiet accusation
- 13:02against God. He's too slow, that he's forgotten,
- 13:08that he needs help, that his plan for your life
- 13:11cannot be trusted without your supervision, our
- 13:14supervision. And we would never say those words
- 13:17in prayer, but we clench our hands and say them
- 13:21every day. And Isaiah 55, eight through nine
- 13:24is God's own answer to this accusation. For my
- 13:29thoughts are not your thoughts. neither are your
- 13:32ways my ways declares the lord as the heavens
- 13:35are higher than the earth so are my ways higher
- 13:38than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts
- 13:40this verse is not god being like insensitive
- 13:48it's god being honest about scale you're looking
- 13:52at your life through a keyhole and he's the whole
- 13:56landscape every year you haven't lived yet every
- 14:00connection that you've not perceived yet, every
- 14:03thing that you're gripping fits into the story
- 14:06larger than you. And then his way doesn't match
- 14:10yours. The grip is not evident of his neglect.
- 14:14It is evidence of his altitude. And so I often
- 14:17say, we're here on Google Maps and just looking
- 14:19down the road and we're lost. And we're like,
- 14:21we're in the middle of a cornfield. And he was
- 14:23like, actually, I'm up here. I'm on the satellite
- 14:25version. I see exactly where you are. I know
- 14:27exactly where you're going. I have all the things
- 14:29planned out. You don't need to know. And so oftentimes
- 14:32we're just like, okay, just keep walking, keeps
- 14:34to keep walking. And so finish this sentence.
- 14:39If I fully let go and trust God with blank, I'm
- 14:45afraid that blank will happen. Whenever, whatever
- 14:50lands in those blanks, That's your accusation
- 14:55of control and being and has been Making against
- 15:01God's character don't rush the past Don't rush
- 15:09past that Write it down and go back and look
- 15:13if I fully let go and trust God with my life
- 15:17my finances my relationships my office my job
- 15:20whatever I'm afraid that I'm gonna fail That
- 15:25I'm gonna I don't I'm not gonna have enough money.
- 15:28I'm not gonna be able to support I'm not gonna
- 15:30be able to do whatever lands in those blanks
- 15:33Is the accusation your control has been making
- 15:35against god's character? And so just write it
- 15:38down and let's walk through this and let's sit
- 15:40with god sitting with the holy spirit and getting
- 15:43Correction and having that your heart posture
- 15:45changed. It's about transformation And we have
- 15:49proverbs 3 5 through 6 And it's about the anatomy
- 15:52of trust. And so let's build an alternative.
- 15:55If control is a counterfeit trust, is the real
- 15:58thing, what's the real thing? And I want to take
- 16:01it slowly through these passages that lays out
- 16:03the anatomy better than anything else in scripture.
- 16:06And so it says, trust in the Lord with all your
- 16:08heart and not lean into your own understanding
- 16:10and always submit to him and he will make your
- 16:13past straight. And you're... Probably heard this
- 16:18verse your entire Christian life. It's on copy
- 16:20mugs It's on your graduation card and the familiarity
- 16:24is exactly why we need to slow down because those
- 16:27four movements in those two verses and each one
- 16:31dismantles a piece of control move one trust
- 16:35in the Lord with all your heart and so the Hebrew
- 16:38word there for trust it doesn't Primarily mean
- 16:41intellectual agreement It carries the sense of
- 16:44leaning your full weight on something, lying
- 16:47down on it, feeling secure because of it. This
- 16:50is the trust of that person who actually puts
- 16:52their weight on the rope and not the person standing
- 16:55on the edge saying, I believe the rope is strong.
- 16:58And notice the scope. All your heart with all
- 17:01your heart, not the easy 60 percent, not the
- 17:06areas where we have backup plans. The Hebrew
- 17:08concept here apart. is the whole inner person,
- 17:13mind, will, emotions, decisions. Partial trust
- 17:16is just control with the religious vocabulary.
- 17:21God is asking for your full weight. So many times
- 17:25in office, I have people like, I need the whole
- 17:28weight of your leg. I need the whole weight of
- 17:29your head. And it's just, no, that's not how
- 17:32heavy your head is. That's not how heavy your,
- 17:34I need to have all of it in my hand. And it's
- 17:36just so hard for people. just to relax enough
- 17:39just to give me the full weight of an arm or
- 17:41a leg or their head or whatever and it's just
- 17:43it's that's how we do in everyday life movement
- 17:47two lean not on your own understanding and so
- 17:51here's the same picture flipped the word here
- 17:55for lean means to support yourself on something
- 17:58the way that you'd brace against a wall or rest
- 18:01on a staff on a like on a cane or a crutch and
- 18:05the instruction is do not make your own understanding
- 18:08the thing holding you up notice that the verse
- 18:11does not say it does not say don't have understanding
- 18:14it doesn't say thinking of unspiritual the entire
- 18:19book of proverbs is a monumental book of wisdom
- 18:24and diligence it says do not lean on it Use your
- 18:30mind fully and just don't make it a load -bearing
- 18:35wall, because your understanding, sharp as it
- 18:37may be, is working with a fraction of the information.
- 18:43Sarah's understanding said, I'm too old, so this
- 18:46must be the way. Her understanding was reasonable.
- 18:49But it was wrong and how many times have we had
- 18:52this reasonable thing and they're like, oh, that's
- 18:54a great idea. It must be the Holy Spirit because
- 18:56we're tired of waiting. And then we just act
- 18:58on it and it was wrong. And then movement three,
- 19:03in all of our ways, submit to him. And the Hebrew
- 19:06word here, literally know him. The word is a
- 19:11deep personal relationship a relational knowledge
- 19:14in all your ways your schedule your parenting
- 19:17your money your ministry your plans Know him
- 19:20there bring him in acknowledge him Not as a console
- 19:25for a brief afterthought but as the Lord who
- 19:29is present in the decisions itself This is where
- 19:33we surrender stopping stop stops being an abstract
- 19:37all your ways means the actual Tuesday afternoon
- 19:41decisions, not just the crisis moments when control
- 19:44has already failed and the prayer is the last
- 19:46resort, but in every decision, in every way.
- 19:51And then movement four, and he will make your
- 19:53path straight. And so this is the promise and
- 19:56this it's the answer of the controller's deepest
- 19:58fear. The fear says, if you let go everything,
- 20:02goes crooked. God says, I straighten the paths
- 20:05of those who trust me. The word picture is a
- 20:09road being cleared and leveled. Not a life without
- 20:12difficulty. Life will have direction. He does
- 20:16not promise you'll see the whole road. He promises
- 20:20the road will be His and that it leads where
- 20:24He intends. Do you see the exchange being offered
- 20:28there? Proverbs 3 is asking you to give up something
- 20:32small and fragile, your ability to figure it
- 20:35all out, in exchange for something vast and unbreakable,
- 20:39the guidance of God who sees everything. It's
- 20:42not a loss of control. It is the only version
- 20:46of security that actually exists. And so take
- 20:51one active decision you're going to carry out
- 20:54right now. Something unresolved something that
- 20:56you've been trying to figure out and walk through
- 20:58it with those four movements write it out What
- 21:02would it be like to put my full weight on god
- 21:05here? Where is where am I leaning on my own understanding?
- 21:10What would it mean to genuinely invite him into
- 21:13this? And believe that he will make my path straight
- 21:17And so the greatest surrender ever prayed Now
- 21:23I want to take you to the garden again not to
- 21:26Eden Where control was grasp but Kissimmee Where
- 21:32was all laid down? It was the night before the
- 21:35cross Jesus knows exactly what is coming and
- 21:39he predicted it in detail and Luke the physician
- 21:42records the scene in a clinical honesty Jesus
- 21:47is such in such anguish that he literally is
- 21:52sweating drops of blood. And this is not a sincere
- 22:00detached moment. The Son of God has full weight
- 22:04of dread. And in this moment, he prays a prayer
- 22:08that I believe is a model for every act of surrender
- 22:11you and I will ever make. Father, If you are
- 22:16willing, take this cup from me, and yet not my
- 22:20will, but your will be done." In Luke 22, 42.
- 22:25I want to break this prayer into two halves because
- 22:28most of us know how to pray one of them. The
- 22:34first half, Father, if you are willing, take
- 22:36this cup from me. This is honesty. Jesus didn't
- 22:40pretend to want the cross. He doesn't perform
- 22:44acceptance. He doesn't feel he asked directly
- 22:47and urgently for another way and this matters
- 22:51enormously for me and you because somewhere along
- 22:55the line many of us have a board observed The
- 23:00idea that surrender means surpassing what we
- 23:03actually want Suppressing what we actually want
- 23:06this the spiritual thing is to act like we don't
- 23:10care about the outcome and Gethsemane says otherwise
- 23:13you are allowed to want things You are allowed
- 23:17to tell God plainly with tears what you want
- 23:20from him Bring the desire bring the dread surrender
- 23:24that skips honesty isn't Surrender that skips
- 23:30honesty isn't surrender It's suppression wearing
- 23:33a church outfit. The second half. Let your will,
- 23:40yet not my will, but yours be done. And then,
- 23:45with the desire still on the table, still real,
- 23:49still felt, Jesus hands over the outcome, yet.
- 23:53The one word is the hinge of the whole prayer.
- 23:57It doesn't erase the request. It... subordinate
- 24:01to it I want this yet you decide and that is
- 24:08what surrender actually is not the absence of
- 24:11desire the submission of desire not I don't care
- 24:15what happens rather I care deeply and I trust
- 24:19you more than I trust my caring and look at what
- 24:25Jesus surrendered was resting on he didn't hand
- 24:28over his will to fate or to chance or to a gritty
- 24:32teeth resignation, he handed it over to the Father.
- 24:36The address at the front of the prayer is a foundation
- 24:40underneath of it. Surrender is only safe because
- 24:44the one who is catching what you're dropping.
- 24:47And here's what I need you to see. Everything
- 24:49that you have as a believer came through that
- 24:52prayer. Your forgiveness, your identity, your
- 24:56freedom. Your eternity all exists because Jesus,
- 25:00in that moment of dread, chose the Father's will
- 25:05over His own. Surrender is not weak. It is the
- 25:12wing of Christian faith. Surrender is the engine
- 25:15of redemption itself. And Jesus explicitly invites
- 25:19us to the same pattern in Matthew 16, 24 through
- 25:2225. Whoever wants me whoever wants to be my disciple
- 25:26must deny themselves and take up their cross
- 25:28and follow me For whoever wants to save their
- 25:31life will lose it and whoever loses their life
- 25:34for me will find it And look at that paradox
- 25:38in verse 25 because it is the exact inverse of
- 25:42the controller's math. Control says, grip your
- 25:45life tightly and you will keep it. Jesus says,
- 25:48grip your own life tightly and you will lose
- 25:51it. The very act of clenching crushes things,
- 25:55but releasing it? But release it into my hands
- 25:59and you will find it. In the Greek word there
- 26:02for life, It means soul, self, your whole self.
- 26:06The self you've been trying to secure through
- 26:08management is found, actually found on the other
- 26:11side of release. Every one of us has a cup that
- 26:17we've asked God to take, a circumstance that
- 26:20we're trying to manage out of our own, a person
- 26:23that we're trying to fix, a future we're trying
- 26:25to guarantee. Gethsemane hands you the words
- 26:28for it. Full honesty about what you want. Yet
- 26:33your yet not my will but your will and My dad
- 26:38was recently in the hospital and it was he was
- 26:42gonna have to have surgery potentially and He
- 26:45was just like I might die and he was like I'm
- 26:48ready. I'm gonna go see Jesus So either I have
- 26:50surgery I get fixed or Whatever has we done and
- 26:53so we have to be okay with that and so we were
- 26:56literally sitting there I would go down to the
- 26:57hospital and the evening after getting off work
- 26:59and we were just prayed Hey, this is your will
- 27:02we know that your planner is better than ours
- 27:04You're gonna put everybody that needs to be in
- 27:07his room with him every physician every nurse
- 27:10and that way either he makes it out of here or
- 27:12he makes it to heaven one of the two is gonna
- 27:14happen and It really was whenever you see someone
- 27:17literally fighting for their life and they're
- 27:20okay with it That's the trust in God because
- 27:23His ways are greater than our ways. He knew exactly
- 27:25what was going to happen. He knew that He was
- 27:26going to be in the hospital. He knew all of this
- 27:28had been played out and He had a plan. Was it
- 27:31our plan? No, it was not. It was not our plan.
- 27:34Nothing. No. And it was just a great thing to
- 27:39just to walk through God with that. And so write
- 27:41down your own Gethsemane prayer this week. The
- 27:44two parts are both required. Part one, total
- 27:47honesty. Father, this is what I want. Take this
- 27:50cup. And name it specifically. Hand it over.
- 27:56Yet not my will, but your will be done. And don't
- 28:00write part two until part one is fully honest.
- 28:04And then pray it out loud. There is something
- 28:06about saying it out loud that makes it real.
- 28:10and what surrender is and what it isn't. Now,
- 28:14let's clear up some confusion because I think
- 28:16one of the biggest reasons believers resist surrender
- 28:19is that we've misdefined it. Surrender is not
- 28:23passivity. Letting go of control does not mean
- 28:30letting go of responsibility. Noah trusted God
- 28:33and built an ark for decades. Nehemiah prayed
- 28:36to God for heaven and posted a guard. Paul trusted
- 28:40the sovereignty of God with his whole theology
- 28:44and worked harder than anyone. The biblical pattern
- 28:46is never do nothing and call it faith. It is
- 28:50do faithfully what is yours to do and release
- 28:53what was never yours. Outcomes, timelines, other
- 28:58people's hearts, the future, your responsibility
- 29:01for obedience. You are not responsible for results.
- 29:06Learning to tell those two apart might be the
- 29:09one most freeing skills in your entire Christian
- 29:13walk. Surrender is not weakness. Our culture
- 29:16reads letting go as losing it. But now listen
- 29:21to what Peter frames how he frames it in 1st
- 29:24Peter 5, 6, and 7. Humble yourselves therefore
- 29:27under God's mighty hand and he might lift up
- 29:31In due time cast all your anxiety to him because
- 29:35he cares for you And we spent some time Back
- 29:40in verse seven on week one and throwing words
- 29:43casting your anxiety into one who cares But look
- 29:46at what comes immediately before it because peter
- 29:50connects them With one breath humble yourselves
- 29:53under god's mighty hand surrender in peter's
- 29:56grammar is what humility does it is honest Acknowledgement
- 30:01of what has been true all along His hand is mighty
- 30:06and mine is not the notice and notice the promise
- 30:09that is attached to it. He may lift You up in
- 30:14due time the way Up is under the exaltation Belongs
- 30:21to God and so does the timing in due time his
- 30:25time that is exactly the part Sarah didn't wait
- 30:28for the exact Exactly the part surrendering and
- 30:31trusting to him. The surrender is not a one -time
- 30:34event It is a posture that you return to daily
- 30:37sometimes hourly Well your hand Something are
- 30:42you handing something to God in the morning and
- 30:45then you find it back in your hands at lunch
- 30:47It's not a failure. It's a practice and you just
- 30:50have to hand it back again and in our in our
- 30:53church one of my one of my favorite sermons and
- 30:56I do it all the time is I talked to people about
- 30:59it, and our pastor was up on stage, and he was
- 31:02talking about, yeah, we hand all of our problems
- 31:05over to God, we wad them up and just take them,
- 31:07and then we go back and pick them back up, because
- 31:09he didn't do it on our time, he didn't do it
- 31:10on our way, and so we didn't surrender anything.
- 31:14And so now, what does surrender actually look
- 31:18like? And I want to give you two pictures from
- 31:21Psalms. And so the first Psalms is 46 .10, be
- 31:23still and know that I am God. I am exalted among
- 31:27nations and I will be exalted in earth. We quote,
- 31:31be still, like it means, find some quiet time.
- 31:35The Hebrew word is far stronger. It means to
- 31:39let, drop, to sink down, to release the grip.
- 31:44Some translations render it seizing, striving.
- 31:48This is a command that is addressed to people
- 31:50mid -chaos. The Psalm has just described nations
- 31:55in an uproar, the mountains falling into the
- 31:57sea, and into that God says, drop it, unclench
- 32:01it, stop striving, and know that I am God. The
- 32:04stillness is not in the absence of the noise.
- 32:06It is the absence of grasping and Knowing comes
- 32:10after dropping and here's the things about god
- 32:13that we cannot control We cannot learn while
- 32:16our hands are full The second picture is psalm
- 32:18131 and it might be the most beautiful image
- 32:21of a surrendered soul in the whole book My heart
- 32:25is not proud Lord. My eyes are not haughty I
- 32:28do not concern myself with great matters or things
- 32:31too wonderful for me, but I am calm and quieted
- 32:34myself I am like a weaned child with his mother
- 32:38like a weaned child. I am content King David
- 32:42a warrior a man with real power described himself
- 32:46as a weaned child not a nursing infant Frantic
- 32:50and demanding his mother's chest, but a weaned
- 32:53child, old enough to know its mother isn't a
- 32:56means of end, resting against her simply because
- 33:00she is her. Content is the presence, not calling
- 33:04for provision. And notice, I have calmed and
- 33:09quieted myself. That's a choice. That's discipline.
- 33:14David looked at the greater matters, the two
- 33:17things, wonderful, too big. yet beyond his reach
- 33:20and deliberately sat down and leaned back. And
- 33:24that is what mature trust looks like, not a frantic
- 33:29gripping at someone who must answer, but settling
- 33:33weight of someone who is the father. And so take
- 33:38some time and two columns in your workbook. And
- 33:42so column one, mind to do, obedience, the diligence.
- 33:47the actual responsibilities God has put in our
- 33:50hands? Column two, mind to release. The outcomes,
- 33:55timelines, the other people's choices that you've
- 33:58been carrying as they were on assignment, sort
- 34:03honestly. Most of us are exhausted not because
- 34:07the column one is too full, but because we've
- 34:10been carrying column two. And so what are some
- 34:12practical ways to loosen our grip daily? And
- 34:16you know me, I need to know what to do with what
- 34:19I know. So I think that these are practical,
- 34:22four practices that we can do of walking out
- 34:26of control. One, open hand prayer. And this is
- 34:33a physical one on purpose because control lives
- 34:37our body, a tight chest, a clenched jaw, shoulders
- 34:41up around our ears every morning this week. Sit
- 34:44with your hands. Close into a fist and name What's
- 34:48in them the situation the person the outcome
- 34:51that you're trying to manage? Then one at a time
- 34:54physically open your hands as a prayer and say
- 34:57father This is yours not my will but your will
- 35:01be done and Sit there for a minute with your
- 35:04palms open. It sounds simple. It is simple But
- 35:08you are preaching your own way into your nervous
- 35:12system with a posture that is something about
- 35:15your body obeying that helps the heart follow.
- 35:20And whenever you catch yourself gripping against
- 35:22mid -afternoon, and you will, you don't need
- 35:27to do a full ritual and just open your hands
- 35:30wherever you are and pray it again. Just one
- 35:32sentence, take it. Two, add the phrase, James
- 35:365, 15, give us the words. If it is the Lord's
- 35:41will, we will live and do this or that. So plan.
- 35:46Make a list. Keep a calendar. And then get it
- 35:49in the habit of adding the phrase, actually saying,
- 35:53if the Lord wills. Over your plans this week,
- 35:56over the goal of this year, over the dream that
- 35:58you've been architecting. This is not superstition.
- 36:03This is not pessimism. It is a verbal habit that
- 36:09refiles every plan from guaranteed to entrusted
- 36:14and watch what it does over time. Plans held
- 36:17with the phrase are plans that change without
- 36:20breaking you because the phrase kept telling
- 36:23the truth about who's actually in charge. Number
- 36:29three, a weekly control fast. And I like some
- 36:34fasts. But what about a control fast? Choose
- 36:37one block of time each week in the evening, half
- 36:40a day, a full Sabbath, if you can, where you
- 36:43deliberately do not manage. No planning ahead,
- 36:46no optimizing, no checking, no fixing. You rest.
- 36:50You worship. And you enjoy what's in front of
- 36:53you. And you let the world demonstrate that it
- 36:57can continue to run without your supervision.
- 37:00And some of you are just like, I don't think
- 37:04so. This is honestly part of what the Sabbath
- 37:07has always been. God commanded Israel to stop
- 37:10one day in seven. He was building a weekly structural
- 37:14reminder into our lives the world is held by
- 37:19God and not your labor. Every week the manna
- 37:22still fell, the sun still rose, and no one's
- 37:25striving was the reason. The control fast is
- 37:30uncomfortable at first. And then discomfort is
- 37:34diagnostic. It tells you exactly how much your
- 37:37sense of safety has been resting in your own
- 37:40activity. And you know me, keep a surrender record.
- 37:46In your workbook or in a journal, keep a running
- 37:49list of what you specifically handed to God,
- 37:52the thing, the date, and leave some room next
- 37:55to your entry because over the weeks, the months,
- 37:58the years, you're going to write down what He
- 38:00did with it. And here's why it matters. Control
- 38:03feeds on forgetfulness. And whenever we forget
- 38:07God's track record, our hand starts closing again.
- 38:11By a written record, it becomes a personal, isaac
- 38:14list and accumulating evidence that the things
- 38:18that you've released were not dropped, but they
- 38:20were caught. And the next act of surrender gets
- 38:23easier when you can look back at the last ten.
- 38:27And so pick two of these four practices. Not
- 38:31all four, just two, and commit to one of them
- 38:34for the next seven days. Write down each one
- 38:37when it comes, and at the end of the week, journal
- 38:40one paragraph. What was the hardest? What surprised
- 38:44you? And where do you feel the grip loosen? And
- 38:48was it little or was it big? And what have you
- 38:51gotten already taken over? Grace for recovering
- 38:56controllers. And before we close, I want to talk
- 38:59to one person because I know someone listening
- 39:03right now is thinking, this is great Tracy, but
- 39:05it's too late. I've already did the Sarah thing.
- 39:07I already took control. I forced the door. I
- 39:10manufactured the outcome. And now I'm living
- 39:12in a mess of my control belt. Friend, listener,
- 39:17I want you to take back, to go back to Genesis
- 39:2116 one more time, because the part of the story
- 39:23we skipped is the part that we need the most.
- 39:25After Sarah's plan works, quote unquote, the
- 39:30house hold fractures, haggard, pregnant, mistreated,
- 39:34caught in the crossfire from someone else's plan
- 39:37ruins. everything. She has to do damage control
- 39:44to Sarah's plan. She has no promise, no covenant,
- 39:47no standing. And there it is. In the wilderness
- 39:50created by another person grasping, the angel
- 39:53of the Lord finds her, calls her by name, and
- 39:56makes her a promise about her son. And Hargar
- 39:59gives God a name. The only person in all of scripture
- 40:03to do this. Elroy. You are the God who sees me
- 40:10in Genesis 16, 13. Do you see what that means
- 40:15for you? God is not absent from the mess. He
- 40:18is not standing back with his arms crossed waiting
- 40:20for the consequences to finish teaching you a
- 40:23lesson. He went into the wilderness that the
- 40:26human control created and he saw, he named, he
- 40:29provided. The God who sees the present in the
- 40:32fallout working even there. And here's the other
- 40:35half. Sarah's failure did not cancel Sarah's
- 40:38promise. 25 years after God spoke, Isaac was
- 40:41stillborn. Hebrews 11, 11, even lists Sarah in
- 40:45the Hall of Fame of Faith, the same woman who
- 40:47laughed at God's timeline and engineered her
- 40:50own. Her control caused real damage, and God
- 40:54addressed it honestly, but it did not disqualify
- 40:57her. His purpose prevailed through her, despite
- 41:01her, and finally, beautifully, with her. So if
- 41:05you are living right now inside the consequences
- 41:08of your own taking over, a decision you forced,
- 41:13a door you pried open, a plan that you built
- 41:15that God never blessed, hear me on these two
- 41:19things first. Stop. Stop trying to control your
- 41:23way out of what control got you into. It's a
- 41:26trap. The same instinct that built the mess that
- 41:29you're That you will offer to manage and clean
- 41:32up it will make the promise It made the first
- 41:35time the way out is not a better plan The way
- 41:38out is surrendered posture that we've been talking
- 41:41about this whole episode Honest confession open
- 41:43your hands and trust God with a situation that
- 41:46you can't unmake second Bring the whole thing
- 41:50to him the failure included Romans 828 does not
- 41:54say God works all things except the messes that
- 41:57you've made yourself He says all things. Your
- 42:01worst act of control. Your wall material in the
- 42:04hands of a redeemer. He does not erase the story.
- 42:08He does something better. He weaves it. Ask Hagar.
- 42:13Ask Sarah. Ask anyone who has watched God grow
- 42:16something holy in the soil that they were sure
- 42:20have ruined on their own. The enemy wants you
- 42:23magnifying your guilt the same way that you're
- 42:25managing your life privately, tightly, in your
- 42:28own strength. But God's invitation is the same
- 42:30one it has always been. Let it go. Open your
- 42:35hands one more time. He sees you and he's not
- 42:39finished. If there is a Sarah decision in your
- 42:44past, a place where you took instead of trusting
- 42:47what you're still carrying shame and consequences
- 42:50from, Write it down. Then write the words over
- 42:53it. Elroy, the God who sees me was there. He
- 42:58is not finished. Bring it to him honestly this
- 43:01week and refuse to let the enemy make it your
- 43:05manager. And so Psalm 37, five, as we close this
- 43:10out, it says, commit your way to the Lord, trust
- 43:13in him and he will do this and he will make righteous
- 43:16reward shine like the dawn and your vindication
- 43:19like a No main day son and so commit your way
- 43:25the Hebrew picture behind commit is literally
- 43:27rolled to roll your own Way into the Lord the
- 43:31way that you rolled a boulder off of your own
- 43:34back or onto your shoulders To build it up and
- 43:36carry it. This is an invitation for the entire
- 43:39episode is stop carrying it Stop working stop
- 43:41trying to do it on your own and here's a promise
- 43:45you roll it into is the verse that holds on this
- 43:48whole conversation is Roman 828 and we know that
- 43:51all things that God works for the good of the
- 43:53purpose who love him and those have been called
- 43:56according to his purpose in all things not just
- 43:58the things that we want according to our plan
- 44:00the detours the delays the doors that open and
- 44:03close the things that you never have been chosen
- 44:06that you could never have managed. God is working
- 44:09in all of it for the good for those who love
- 44:12Him, weaving with a scope that we cannot see,
- 44:14a timeline that you didn't set, and towards a
- 44:17purpose that prevails. That is why you can let
- 44:22go. Not because outcomes don't matter, but because
- 44:25the outcomes were never in your hands to begin
- 44:28with. They were always his. The only question
- 44:30is whether you'd be exhausted and pretending
- 44:33to do it yourself. So here's what I want you
- 44:35to carry out of this episode. The grip was never
- 44:38keeping you safe. It was only keeping you tied.
- 44:41Freedom from control is not the loss of security.
- 44:43It is the discovery of a real security. And the
- 44:47kind that doesn't depend on your vigilance, your
- 44:50backup plans, your ability to hold it all together.
- 44:53The rest of the mighty hand of the father who
- 44:56never once dropped anything he promised to hold.
- 45:00Trust him with all your heart. Lean your full
- 45:02weight. He can carry you and open your hands
- 45:05and he will make your plan straight. And so this
- 45:08episode, if it helps you today, share it with
- 45:10somebody who's caring too much. You know exactly
- 45:13who came in mind just now. Send it to them. And
- 45:16if you're working, if you're working through
- 45:19it yourself, stand up. Say, God, I cannot control
- 45:23this anymore. I'm done. I'm gonna let go. And
- 45:27so we hope that this message encouraged you.
- 45:29Subscribe, leave a comment. I know that these
- 45:31last couple episodes have been a little bit longer,
- 45:34but just as I learn, as I dive deeper into Scripture,
- 45:36I just think I need to do a little bit more diving
- 45:39into these lessons. And so... If you like these
- 45:42longer contents instead of the short ones, let
- 45:44us know and we can continue with longer conversations.
- 45:47And July, again, will be our last one. We are
- 45:49going to skip August and we will see you guys
- 45:51back in September. We love you guys. Have a great
- 45:53week.
