- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is Wednesday.
- 0:15It's the 14th of January, it's International Kite Day.
- 0:20I wonder if you've got a kite at home.
- 0:21Not many kites around. I used to have kites when I was
- 0:24a boy. I used to have these cool stunt
- 0:25kites with two strings that you can make them kind of change
- 0:28direction and dance in the sky. Here's something fascinating.
- 0:32Did you know the kites? They've been around for over
- 0:342000 years. And the legend is that a Chinese
- 0:37farmer back in the day kept on having his hat blowing off his
- 0:41head in the wind. So he tied a piece of string to
- 0:43it and then when it blew away, he hung onto the end of the
- 0:46string. And thus the first kite was
- 0:49born. I'm not sure about the veracity
- 0:53of that legend, but much more recently 200 BCA Chinese general
- 0:58used a kite strategically as he was assaulting a city to see
- 1:03exactly how far away his soldiers would need to tunnel in
- 1:07order to gain access to the city by how much string he had let
- 1:11out on the kite. There you go, war strategy,
- 1:15beautiful colours, Kites have got it all in their history.
- 1:19Maybe if you don't have a kite, you could watch Mary Poppins the
- 1:22Let's Go fly a Kite scene. Ah, there's some goodness for
- 1:24your day. But kites aside, let us dive
- 1:28into our reading. This is a shorter chapter.
- 1:31Gee, Luke is a writer, isn't he? Once he gets going, these
- 1:35chapters go for a while. Today is a much shorter chapter
- 1:38as we continue to hear these words of Jesus about healing on
- 1:43a day when nobody wants Jesus to heal, about mustard seeds and
- 1:47yeast. Ah, all these good parables.
- 1:49You and I know that it's so good to hear Jesus words afresh
- 1:53today. So, Holy Spirit, may these words
- 1:57land on us and arrest us so that we can see your truth laid bare
- 2:03before us. All right, friends, let us read
- 2:07together Luke chapter 13. About this time, Jesus was
- 2:21informed that Pilate had murdered some people from
- 2:24Galilee as they were offering sacrifices at the Temple.
- 2:28Do you think those Galileans were worse sinners than all the
- 2:31other people from Galilee? Jesus asked.
- 2:34Is that why they suffered? Not at all.
- 2:37And you will perish too, unless you repent of your sins and turn
- 2:41to God. And what about the 18 people who
- 2:44died when the tower in Siloam fell on them?
- 2:48Were they the worst sinners in Jerusalem?
- 2:51No, and I tell you again that unless you repent, you will
- 2:56perish too. Then Jesus told this story.
- 3:00A man planted A fig tree in his garden and came again and again
- 3:05to see if there was any fruit on it.
- 3:07But he was always disappointed. Finally, he said to his
- 3:10gardener, I've waited three years and there hasn't been a
- 3:13single fig. Cut it down.
- 3:15It's just taking up space in the garden.
- 3:18The gardener answered, Sir, give it one more chance.
- 3:22Leave it another year and I'll give it special attention and
- 3:26plenty of fertiliser. If we get figs next year, fine.
- 3:30If not, then you can cut it down.
- 3:34One Sabbath day, as Jesus was teaching in the synagogue, he
- 3:38saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit.
- 3:42She had been bent double for 18 years and was unable to stand up
- 3:47straight. When Jesus saw her, he called
- 3:50her over and said, Dear woman, you are healed of your sickness.
- 3:55Then he touched her and instantly she could stand
- 3:58straight. How she praised God.
- 4:02But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that
- 4:06Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day.
- 4:08There are 6 days of the week for working, He said to the crowd.
- 4:13Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.
- 4:17But the Lord replied, You hypocrites, each of you works on
- 4:21the Sabbath day. Don't you untie your ox or your
- 4:24donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it out for
- 4:27water? This dear woman, a daughter of
- 4:30Abraham, has been held in bondage by Satan for 18 years.
- 4:36Isn't it right that she be released even on the Sabbath?
- 4:40This shamed his enemies, but all the people rejoiced at the
- 4:44wonderful things he did. Then Jesus said, what is the
- 4:48Kingdom of God like? How can I illustrate it?
- 4:52It is like a tiny mustard seed that a man planted in a garden.
- 4:57It grows and becomes a tree, and the birds make nests in its
- 5:01branches. He also asked, what else is the
- 5:05Kingdom of God like? It is like the yeast a woman
- 5:08used in making bread. Even though she put only a
- 5:12little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every
- 5:17part of the dough. Jesus went through the towns and
- 5:21villages, teaching as he went, always pressing on toward
- 5:25Jerusalem. Someone asked him, Lord, will
- 5:29only a few be saved? He replied, Work hard to enter
- 5:34the narrow door of God's Kingdom, for many will try to
- 5:38enter, but will fail. When the master of the house has
- 5:42locked the door, it will be too late.
- 5:44He will stand outside, knocking and pleading.
- 5:47Lord, open the door for us, But he will reply, I don't know you
- 5:52or where you come from. Then you will say, But we ate
- 5:55and drank with you, and you taught us in our streets.
- 5:59And he will reply, I tell you, I don't know you or where you come
- 6:03from. Get away from me.
- 6:05All you who do evil, there will be weeping and gnashing of
- 6:10teeth, for you will see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the
- 6:14prophets in the Kingdom of God, but you will be thrown out.
- 6:18And people will come from all over the world, from east and
- 6:22West, North and South, to take their places in the Kingdom of
- 6:25God. And note this, some who seem
- 6:29least important now will be the greatest then, and some who are
- 6:33the greatest now will be least important then.
- 6:38At that time some Pharisees said to him, Get away from here if
- 6:42you want to live. Herod Antipas wants to kill you,
- 6:46Jesus replied. Go tell that fox that I will
- 6:50keep on casting out demons and healing people today and
- 6:55tomorrow and the third day I will accomplish my purpose.
- 6:59Yes, today, tomorrow, and the next day.
- 7:02I must proceed on my way. For it wouldn't do for a prophet
- 7:06of God to be killed except in Jerusalem.
- 7:10Oh, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and
- 7:15stones God's messengers. How often I have wanted to
- 7:19gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks
- 7:23beneath her wings. But you wouldn't let me.
- 7:27And now look, your house is abandoned, and you will never
- 7:31see me again until you say blessings on the one who comes
- 7:35in the name of the Lord. Now, Jesus, we are just amazed
- 7:49at the generosity that you show us as you share these
- 7:55challenging teachings about giving up ourselves and working
- 7:59hard to make it through the narrow door and how many people
- 8:02will fail in the next moment. You speak from your heart about
- 8:07just wanting to gather up your people under your wings.
- 8:11And all the while you say these things as you walk inextricably
- 8:16closer to Jerusalem, to the place where you will ultimately
- 8:20give up everything to make a way for us to be saved, even though
- 8:25we struggle to live lives that honour you entirely.
- 8:30So, Lord, we just thank you for your generosity and we thank you
- 8:34for your love, and we thank you for all you have done for us,
- 8:39even though we don't deserve it, but we just rest under your
- 8:43wings of protection and provision and love and kindness.
- 8:50Thank you Jesus, for making a way for us.
- 8:54We are so grateful. We pray all of this in your
- 8:57generous and saving name. Amen.
