- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Norwegian with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. Hi everyone. We are so glad you are here. Lucas: It is episode two fifty seven. Today we are talking about something quiet and careful. Luna: Yes. It is about hands. And thread. And needles. Lucas: Exactly. We are learning how to talk about sewing. The first word is the verb itself. Luna: Okay. Let me guess. Is it 'sy'? Lucas: You got it. 'Å sy'. It means 'to sew'. Listen closely. Lucas: Å sy.... Å sy. Luna: Å sy. Okay, that sounds like 'soy' but softer. Lucas: Very close. Just relax the tongue. Now let's make a sentence. Lucas: I sew. In Norwegian, that is 'Jeg syr'. Notice the 'r' at the end. Lucas: Jeg syr.... Jeg syr. Luna: Jeg syr. Like 'Yay' with an 'r'? No, that is not right. Lucas: Almost. Think of the English word 'sir'. But with a soft 'j' sound before it. Try again. Luna: Oh. Y-syr. Jeg syr. Yes. That feels better. Lucas: Perfect. You nailed it. So if you have a broken shirt, you might say this. Lucas: I sew the button back on. Or simply, jeg syr knappen på. Luna: Jeg syr knappen på. I love that. It sounds very domestic. Lucas: It is. Very cozy. Now, what if you want to ask someone if they can do it? Luna: Can you sew? Is that 'Kan du sy'? Lucas: Spot on. 'Kan du sy?' It is polite and direct. Repeat after me. Lucas: Kan du sy?... Kan du sy? Luna: Kan du sy? Kan du sy? Okay. I think I can remember that one easily. Lucas: Good. Because now we move to the next craft. Embroidery. Luna: Ooh, pretty stitches. The word is 'brodere', right? Lucas: Yes. 'Å brodere'. It means 'to embroider'. It is a longer word, but very melodic. Lucas: Å brodere.... Å brodere. Luna: Å brodere. A-bro-de-re. Yeah. That flows nicely. Lucas: Right. Now let's use it in the present tense. I embroider. Lucas: Jeg broderer. Note the double 'e' at the end. It makes a short 'eh' sound. Lucas: Jeg broderer.... Jeg broderer. Luna: Jeg broderer. Juhg bro de ruh. Got it. I feel like a fashion designer now. Lucas: You are becoming quite the artisan. If you were describing your hobby, you could say: Lucas: I embroider flowers. Jeg broderer blomster. Luna: Jeg broderer blomster. Wow. That sounds beautiful. Lucas: It does. And often when people sew or embroider, they find it relaxing. Luna: So we need a phrase for that feeling. What did we learn last time about fun? Lucas: We touched on emotions. To say 'it is fun' or 'it is interesting', we say 'Det er morsomt'. Luna: Det er morsomt. Det er... mor-somt. Right? Lucas: Exactly. 'Morsomt' comes from 'mor' which relates to mother, but now just means funny/fun. Listen. Lucas: Det er morsomt.... Det er morsomt. Luna: Det er morsomt. Det er morsomt. Okay. So putting it all together... Luna: I sew. Jeg syr. Can you sew? Kan du sy? I embroider. Jeg broderer. It is fun. Det er morsomt. Lucas: That was perfect. You used every phrase we learned today. Bravo. Luna: Thanks! I really liked those. They feel very useful for my winter hobbies. Lucas: They are great for long nights. Before we go, a quick note about Fexingo. Imagine you are asking a friend to help you fix a dress. Luna: Okay. Hey, can you sew? Kan du sy? I am trying to mend this skirt. Lucas: Yes. And maybe add, it is fun. Det er morsomt. Even if it is hard work. Luna: Kan du sy? Det er morsomt. I will try to embroider a flower too. Lucas: Jeg broderer en blomst. Exactly. You are getting the hang of this. Luna: I feel like I could actually make a scarf now. Well, almost. Lucas: Slowly is the key. Remember to repeat 'jeg syr' and 'jeg broderer' a few times. Luna: Jeg syr. Jeg broderer. I will practice while I walk home. Lucas: Good idea. Walking is good for memory. Keep listening to these repeats. Luna: It helps them stick. I felt much better saying 'kan du sy' just now. Lucas: That is because you trusted the rhythm. Trust the process. We will see you next time. Luna: Bye everyone. Keep practicing your sewing words. Ha det bra! Lucas: Ha det bra. See you in the next episode of Learn Norwegian with Fexingo.
