- 0:01This is Kevin Sports very Daily, back in the chair after my annual holiday,
- 0:06and it's all changed. You know, we're now radio focused on But
- 0:14then you knew that, didn't You go away five minutes and they turn everything
- 0:18around. Anyway, Whilst I was away, I missed all the fun of
- 0:24the open day and all that live music, but I was keeping an eye
- 0:28on it from sunny Cypress. So yes, I've been in Cypress for the
- 0:33last three weeks. Landed in the early hours of a Wednesday morning, so
- 0:38I've not had a great deal of time to prepare the show. So it
- 0:42speaks a bit more music than sport as I catch up with what's going on.
- 0:50Well, the cricket season has kicked off. Well does a cricket season
- 0:54kick off? Doesn't really does it? It kind of bowls off anyway.
- 0:58Our small reports on our local Saturday cricket insides. That's Folkestone, Hawkinge,
- 1:04Hive, Hive Green, Saltwood and Simpton Park. We've bit of news from
- 1:15our local senior football clubs folks in a Victor and Hive Town, including a
- 1:19special mention for the Invictor under eighteens. We've got some hockey news from the
- 1:23folks on Optimist Hockey Cup and runners from Folkston Running and Arthletis Club have been
- 1:29busy at various locations around the globe. And I have a special report on
- 1:36the two park runs that I actually started. That's the keywords started in Cyprus,
- 1:42but the two runs couldn't have been much more different anyway. Let's start
- 1:48the shadow with a great track. This makes me feel that I'm back in
- 1:53a chair. The feeling never belowly, folks feeling there never be lonely,
- 2:20you know. I've seen them a couple of times that The first time it
- 2:22was a bit of a surprise. Actually we went up to see Elo at
- 2:25the O two and they were the front band. I was really I got
- 2:30in there and didn't expect to see them and they were brilliant. So we
- 2:34saw them again when they came to the Marler, which was a bit closer.
- 2:38Okay, now it's summer, so they say, so it's time for
- 2:40the sound of leather on willow as the local cricket season gets underway. In
- 2:46fact, most of our clubs have played two fixtures already, so let's crack
- 2:50crack on with some updates. Just had a little core for fee. I
- 2:54think I'll come back with her. You always come back what full of you
- 2:55with something, then you always catch something in the last few days anyway.
- 3:00Last Saturday, Folks on first eleven beat Bromley Common by twenty seven runs.
- 3:05Folks then won the toss and batted first, making two hundred and six all
- 3:07out, Chinwei Suta being caught out just too short of his century on ninety
- 3:13eight. I mean, how cruel is that you bat away and you get
- 3:15into the nineties. It often happens with batsman. I don't know whether they
- 3:19lose concentration or they kind of the bowlers step it up a little bit,
- 3:23but it was just too short of a century anyway. Bromley were then bowled
- 3:28out for one hundred and seventy nine for the first eleven. It's been a
- 3:31positive start to the season after relegation last year, having played two and won
- 3:37two. This week they welcome Sidcup to the Three Hills for a twelve o'clock
- 3:39start, and it looks like Saturday is going to be a sunny, breezy
- 3:44day, so a good cricket in day. In the local derby down at
- 3:46the Grove High Cricket Club batted first against Hyde Green making one hundred and ninety
- 3:52four. Troy Harding top scorer with fifty eight. The Green were then bowled
- 3:57out for ninety eight, Troy bowling out Action for seventeen and going on to
- 4:01make two catches. Now I've highlighted that little section there because it's good to
- 4:06see local sporty people playing more than one sport. Troy is a regular goalscorer
- 4:12for the Folks in the Victor's Disability Football Club and Henry runs for Folks and
- 4:15Running and Athletics Club, often winning the park run fixtures. Next week see
- 4:20Hive traveling away to Egerton and Hive Green face another local derby as they make
- 4:27the short journey to Saltwood. Saltwood, by the Way lost last week they
- 4:31lost by eighty four runs to Willsborough. Hawkins beat Betsanger Colliery by ninety seven
- 4:38runs, making one hundred and sixty two then bowling out their opponents for sixty
- 4:42five. This week's it's a home fixture on Saturday against Wire and finally Sipton
- 4:47Park traveled to Raynham but lost by four wickets. Now this week it's a
- 4:53home game as they welcome Borstal Cricket Club who come from just off the M
- 4:58two in Rochester. And when I say bors Stall Cricket Club, there is
- 5:00a place in Rochester called cricket called ball Stool. It's not a prison,
- 5:05it's just a little hamlet's little village there. So there you go. That's
- 5:10my first cricket report of the season. But these clubs have got so much
- 5:14more going for them than just the first team. So in the next few
- 5:17weeks I should be chasing our local cricket teams for somebody to come in and
- 5:21tell us what goes on behind the scenes at their club. Okay. In
- 5:26the meantime we've got the Stereophonics and a bit of a crash test dummies from
- 5:46two thousand and three. There's the crash Test Dummies and a song with a
- 5:49strange title was called well that's where it says here. Okay. Now I've
- 5:57just got back from Cyprus and I want to tell you about a tale of
- 6:00two park runs that I took part in whilst on holiday. Now, over
- 6:04the years me and missus Ferrett have been going to Cyprus and we've got to
- 6:08know a very friendly bunch that are the Pathos a running club. They have
- 6:13their own independent park run based on the same principles as a UK Park Run.
- 6:16It's a five k course for all ages and all abilities, is held
- 6:21once a month at eight o'clock on the first Sunday of the month along a
- 6:25traffic free paved coastal path and all you have to do is register once for
- 6:30your barcode, which recalls your time, how it compares with others in your
- 6:33age group, and of course it's free. Sounds familiar, Well, it's
- 6:38the same principle as the UK Park Run, but they only do it once
- 6:42a month now. They start at eight o'clock to try and beat the hot
- 6:46weather. So on the first of May I went along with Sue Elkins,
- 6:49but the forecast wasn't good. It said storms on the way around eight o'clock.
- 6:55A bit of a coincidence that volunteer and good friend of ours Andy Bashford,
- 7:00jogged off with an armful of signs to the two and a half k
- 7:02turnaround point, while Sue and I decided to do tail walking duties with and
- 7:09his wife Jane. The run started just as it was about to rain.
- 7:14We'd been out about ten minutes when the rain turned into hale, and then
- 7:17a few minutes later this turned into a hailstorm of biblical proportions, coming straight
- 7:24into our faces. Some runners decided to turn around and head back. However,
- 7:28we carried on, but not for long. With hailstones pounding us like
- 7:32the machine gun, we reluctantly turned round. At least the hailstones hammered into
- 7:38our backs and not our faces. Now, I would say, and I'm
- 7:41not sure about this, but at least twenty five percent of the runners decided
- 7:44to do the same. However, many hardy souls carried on, and they
- 7:47actually did the whole course. I suppose they got out there so far and
- 7:51what's the point of turning back, because they were the fast runners, though
- 7:54mirs ahead of us. Anyway, when we got back, people were diving
- 7:57into their cars, or they were huddled into any on a bit of shelter
- 8:01that they could find. As the fierce storm carried on for another twenty minutes
- 8:05or so and slowly slowed down, but it didn't really abate for about another
- 8:07half an hour. Now you had to remire people like Andy at the turning
- 8:11point and the finished Barco team, who stuck to their posts like true park
- 8:16run professionals. We found out later that Andy had tried to find the start
- 8:20line as he could see the potential dangers as he got soaked first, but
- 8:24he couldn't get through. He was trying to warn him not to start,
- 8:28but hold off for a little while as the storm headed along the coast.
- 8:31Now it has to be said, this flash storm has never happened to us
- 8:35before in any of our visits to Cyprus, and it's just a shame.
- 8:39It coincided almost to the minute that the park run started, and in all
- 8:43of my years of running, looking back, I've never encountered anything like this.
- 8:48Now Pathos Running Club not only have a running section, they also have
- 8:52a walk in and a cycling groups within the club and their own club runs.
- 8:56Ay always end somewhere near a bar or a cafe where you can get
- 9:00breakfast or club members turn up with copious amounts of cake. Now they hold
- 9:05fundraising coffee mornings for various worthwhile causes, and the biggest one they support is
- 9:11a charity called Breast of Friends with this offers friendship, support and advice for
- 9:16people who've been diagnosed with breast cancer. Now, over the years they've raised
- 9:22more than twenty thousand euros. That's around seventeen thousan pounds to support this worthwhile
- 9:26cause. So if you're every on holiday in Pathos and fancy apart run,
- 9:31just contact Pathos Running Club dot org. Or if you're taking a break around
- 9:35October time, you might like to join the team on their fundraising Breast of
- 9:41Friends five k walk, where you will look out a place if you don't
- 9:43wear pink. Okay, So it's time for a bit of music now,
- 9:46and you know what I was thinking about this one. I thought it's got
- 9:50to be a running type song, so I found this. I think this
- 9:52one that sums up that I'm at home now. But I did run for
- 9:56home, so what better song than to choose? This is for all the
- 10:00Pathos Running Club members. Lindis Farm Run for Home, travel with the guitar,
- 10:18I run for Home. There from Lindis varm lovely gentle running song.
- 10:26Now the tell you about the second part run. Now this one was again
- 10:30different. It was This one was under the what can I say, the
- 10:33UK banner. It was an official UK part run, but it was in
- 10:39a place called Happy Valley, lovely aimed place. And now that's in Episcopy
- 10:43in Cyprus. It's about thirty miles from Paphos. It was technically on UK
- 10:48soil as it was set in an Army garrison. Now you can't just turn
- 10:52up at this one. There's a lot of security around and so you have
- 10:58to be invited. They take your part, sport number and all that sort
- 11:01of stuff. So the Army invited all of the Pathless Running Club along and
- 11:05around fifty of its members turned up and ran, including myself and Sue Elkins.
- 11:11Well, mine was more of a walk really. You know, it's
- 11:15a long time since I did a bit of running of had injuries, so
- 11:18I running career was curtailed early to speak. Anyway, to add a bit
- 11:24of spice to the morning. It was also was known as a color run
- 11:28where this is where at various points along the route you're pelted by powdered paint.
- 11:31Now, these stations were manned mainly by the children of the garrison families,
- 11:35supervised by their parents of course, but one would say how can I
- 11:39put it? And they were very enthusiastic when it came to spraying us adults
- 11:43with the paint. But the Army had a great idea, you know,
- 11:46when we got there, they provided everybody with a plain white T shirt it
- 11:50was a brilliant idea. Now the run started, they got great facilities to
- 11:54forces I don't know. The run started on a lovely running track at eight
- 11:56o'clock and this time it did get but there was no storms. There were
- 12:03some classic tunes being pumped out on the PA system, and then there was
- 12:05also some traditional sounds coming from the Army band. The corpse was flat,
- 12:11thank goodness, but the temperature did start to rise. There was a cake
- 12:15stand. There's always a run and cake in Cyprus go together, I'll tell
- 12:20you. There was a cake stand and they were all raising money for a
- 12:24services charity called SAFFA which stands for Soldiers, Sailors and Airman's Families Association.
- 12:31All this added to a carnival atmosphere and all the Pathways runners entered in the
- 12:35spirit of things. Now the Services fire station, they had a fire station
- 12:41on board. There was a big fire tender. Even they provided a water
- 12:43spray just when you needed it right at the finish. Myself and Sue felt
- 12:50very lucky being invited by the Pathways Running Club and we're very grateful because it
- 12:54was a brilliant fun event. Now, Matt, the run director, in
- 12:58his brief in welcomed the pathfors runners and the club president Sue Audrey, made
- 13:03a short speech and presented Matt with a yellow engraved plaque, which is a
- 13:07lovely idea because yellow is the club colors and this was in thanks for the
- 13:11invitation. On the running side of things, two hundred and eighty seven runners
- 13:16took part, and they were all invited. Let me tell you they couldn't
- 13:18just turn up and listen to this bit. This is the Pinuria's back.
- 13:22Sit down, make yourself a cup of tea and listen to this bit.
- 13:26I came two hundred and fourteenth, Yes, and out of two hundred and
- 13:31eighty seven, I was fourth in my age category. That category is a
- 13:35male seventy to seventy four year old fourth. I thought, do you know
- 13:39what I'm really tough with that? I was really pleased after I hadn't been
- 13:41running for years, and then I looked closely at the results and discovered there
- 13:46was only four in my age category anyway, so never mind, I was
- 13:50there now. They must have had it in for one of my friends,
- 13:54Andy Bashford, at one of the paint stations, because he came in looking
- 13:58like the jolly, enjoyant absolutely plastered in green paint. But this was a
- 14:03holiday memory that only runners could understand, running around an army base in twenty
- 14:07eight degree temperatures at eight o'clock in the morning, getting plastered in paint.
- 14:13Once again, Sue and I want to say a big thank you to the
- 14:15Pathways Running Club and all its members for making us feel so welcome. The
- 14:20eagle eyed amongst us are like myself, Andy and Darryl all spotted a sign
- 14:24that said the Nag's Head. And I'll tell you what a point of Kiyo
- 14:28would have gone down really well even at that time in the morning. So
- 14:33start for another song now. And because I've been out in Cyprus for three
- 14:37weeks and the temperatures have been lovely. In fact, it was getting a
- 14:39bit too hot just before we left, I just want to play a little
- 14:43bit of a beach boys. It's got to be a summary sound, doesn't
- 14:46it. So have a little listen to this. This might take you back,
- 14:50wouldn't it be nice? Melanie? See there a northern Star. You
- 15:09know what that sort of title is just reminding me that it's probably old news
- 15:13to you now, But while we was in Cyprus, you saw the Northern
- 15:18lights, didn't you. They all came down over folks, And I can't
- 15:20believe the amount of pictures I saw on social media saying, oh, look
- 15:24at this, you know, but in Cyprus. No, we're too far
- 15:28away, too fast south. I think now I've got to pay thods thousands
- 15:33of thousands of pounds if I want to go and see the Northern Lights.
- 15:35You're so lucky, you save yourself so much money. Okay. So I'm
- 15:39trying to catch up with a bit of local football news and I see that,
- 15:43folks in Victor captain has decided to leave the club. Callum Davis has
- 15:46been within Victor for eight years and we're be sadly missed after making three hundred
- 15:52and forty eight appearances. Meanwhile, manager Andy Drewy assigned experienced goalkeeper Johnny Henley
- 15:58from Tunbridge Angels position, which is over the last few seasons, let's face
- 16:02it, they've been in and out. If we haven't had the consistency in
- 16:06goal there, it's been a vulnerable position and some of the defenses in recent
- 16:11seasons have looked a bit shaky because they haven't got a wonderful goalkeeper behind them,
- 16:15Whereas going back we had Tim robertson goal. What was he in goal
- 16:19for about six seven years when it so everyone was settled. Still, let's
- 16:23see how this one goes in. Victor have six away friendlies booked in against
- 16:27Shepard United, Whitstaball, Ashford, Sittingbourn, Herne Bay and Tumbridge Angels and
- 16:33home games against deal Town, Margate and Maidstone. And once again I can
- 16:37remember back in the day going to watch the pre season when Folkston used to
- 16:44I don't know how they did it. It must be down to money now,
- 16:47but used to get teams like Brighton reserves or Brighton youth team. You
- 16:51know, Charlton Brentford youth team used to come down for friendlies and certainly roast
- 16:56life out of Folkston, but it really kept them on toes now down at
- 17:00Hive. They've in place for the next season. They've got a new chairman
- 17:04in Matthew Smith. They've got a new manager in Sammy Moore who brings along
- 17:10the backroom team of Darren Beale with several youngsters in pressing. At the end
- 17:14of last season, if you remember that last season they were injury you know,
- 17:18the season was over. Injuries crept in and they were struggling to put
- 17:23a side out and they put a lot of youngsters out and they all did
- 17:26very well. So the thing is, will they have a new look side
- 17:30to start their campaign and two many youngsters. Congratulations go to Paul Stanton's in
- 17:34Victor Under eighteen's as they won the Kent Youth League Premier Division. Now you
- 17:40can't get much better than that in county youth football, and you really do
- 17:44need to go to the folks in the Victor's website and read the story of
- 17:48how they actually won it. It was very very nail biting by the sound
- 17:51of it. They had to rely on other results. The kickoff times were
- 17:55different. It must have been a really tense morning. But at the end
- 17:59of the day you you can't sort of take away from the lads. They
- 18:03are champions. And the thing with under eighteens is that some of them now
- 18:08might I don't know that. I won't say they're lost, but they need
- 18:11somewhere to go. They need to get straight back into senior football. I
- 18:15expect some of them are only like seventeen anyway, and they get another season
- 18:19in the under eighteens, but this is a sort of in between time for
- 18:22a lot of the youngsters. So let's hope they all find the good clubs
- 18:26or even go on to stay with in Victor and get a chance to have
- 18:30our runout in the first team. Okay, so that's enough for other football.
- 18:33I'll be back surely after a bit of music. We've I don't know
- 18:36what we've got coming up, what we've got left. We've got a bit
- 18:38about hockey. We've got a bit about this half term coming up. We've
- 18:41got a bit about some part run at UK where the runners have been and
- 18:47we want to wish you good luck to the Blister sisters as they take on
- 18:49a relay. And I'll tell you about that shortly. That's the Sugar Babes
- 19:04there and a song called Freak Like Me. Now all about youth football.
- 19:11It wasn't just the under eighteens, that folks in the Victor that have had
- 19:15a good season. And I'm going to try and track down Paul Stanton and
- 19:18see if I can get him in because I think the under thirties won a
- 19:21cup or they won the league. I'm not sure. I'm a bit out
- 19:23of touch, so I need to do some homework, but it'd be nice
- 19:27to get Paul in to give us a rundown of everything that's happened at the
- 19:33Folks and in Victor youth section of the football there. Now it seems like
- 19:38the Folks and Optimist Hockey Club never sleep. Last weekend they hosted the women's
- 19:44Masters over forties tournament on behalf of Southeast Hockey. Now it's interesting to note
- 19:49that now the Ops have got such splendid facilities there, they're getting on more
- 19:53and more to host tournaments. We went down there, I don't know before
- 19:56I went away on holiday and there was a that is and masses of kids
- 20:00as they hosted a Kent on the Saturday, I think it was the Kent
- 20:04Boys under tens and then on a Sunday the Kent Girl or anyway, it
- 20:08was absolutely packed and that's only because they've got the facilities to do it now.
- 20:12They've got the pitches, they've got the space, they've got the refreshment
- 20:15places and good luck to them. In this particular tournament, seven regional teams
- 20:21traveled to the Three Hills, each playing six games over the weekend. Now,
- 20:26the teams came from all over the place. They came from London,
- 20:29the Midlands, the Southeast Yorkshire, in the northeast, the East, and
- 20:33the west and south central. All these areas of England converged on the Three
- 20:38Hills, so it really was a very high profile competition. Now, without
- 20:42going through all the scores, after two days of hockey, London were announced
- 20:47as the winners. So, to be honest, that's another feather in the
- 20:49cap for our very own local hockey club, the Folks and Optimists. Now
- 20:55it's approaching half term. Parents don't forget it's coming up soon, so why
- 20:59not keep your children active by letting them be part of the many half term
- 21:03camps that offer a great choice of sports and activities. Now, the one's
- 21:07to be fair, I haven't looked into it much, but I know is
- 21:10half term and there's the next generation a coaching company, Elite Community Coaching,
- 21:15Folks and Sports Center and the Folks and Saints Basketball at the Three Heels.
- 21:19They all do something for kids, so please please check them out. And
- 21:23I'd also like to just say that no doubt there are lots of others out
- 21:26there that I don't know about that might be local to you, and I
- 21:30do apologize if I've left anybody out. So I've been trolling the playlist because
- 21:37I'm really still having summer mode. I'm sitting there and the sun's out,
- 21:41okay, probably ten degrees fifteen degrees cool at the new I was used to
- 21:45for been a couple of days after having three weeks in Cyprus. But I'm
- 21:49looking for some summer songs and this one will just and I bet you do
- 21:53the little bit of the end. John Travolta Summer Nights, Folks, the
- 21:57radio station one five point nine radio Folks, I love it. Well,
- 22:32did you do that bit at the end there? You know where you're at
- 22:33that disco? Oh you're you know there's a barbecue in the back, Golden
- 22:37or your old wedding reception. This one comes on and everyone does that last
- 22:41little bit. Come on, we've all done it. Okay, we're getting
- 22:45I'll tell you what. Running out of time? Where is this hour going?
- 22:48So just a couple of few more things before I go. Folks and
- 22:52running club athletes have been very active at park runs around the globe at venues
- 22:56such as Folks and of course they've been to Ashford, Pegwell Bay, Dover
- 23:00Waterfront, Margate, Dartford, Warmer and Deal Rhodes Park Run. Now to
- 23:04look this up, that is actually in Australia. Some of the folks and
- 23:07runners were there in Australia, and of course Sue Elkins was in the Happy
- 23:11Valley in Cyprus. On Sunday, I'm straight back at the sharp end.
- 23:17I'll be on the mic at the Folkston nearly sold out Coastal ten k which
- 23:21is organized by the Folks and Rotary Club with Ray Johnson as a race director
- 23:25and one of which Sha good luck to the Blister Sisters relay team of Joe
- 23:29Bonner, Luise Leggett, Tika Barrow, Sarah Walker and Becka Young As they
- 23:33ran a half marathon a day this weekend and they end up in Paris.
- 23:38Believe it or not, Yes, Paris. They're raising funds for Parkinson's UK
- 23:42and SAFFHA, the Armed Forces charity. So we're running out of time,
- 23:47but I found another Sunshine song and this to take you back because you want
- 23:52nothing more than this for the weekend. Here comes the Sun, so there
- 24:07to put you in a summer move for the weekend, the beatles Here Comes
- 24:11the Sun. What a great track. Okay, that's about it for me.
- 24:15I do apologize if I've been sort of tripping over my tongue and coughing
- 24:18down the microphone. It's back of the chair, but it just takes a
- 24:23little bit of getting used to. And so this is radio focus, and
- 24:27I've got to get used to saying that radio focused on on one oh five
- 24:30point nine. And now, if you've got a local sporty story to tell
- 24:34me, then please get in touch. There's lots of unsung sporting heroes out
- 24:37there and I want to start getting them back in the studio. I'm gonna
- 24:41i am to try and get Paul Stanton back in and I want to go
- 24:45do a round of the cricket clubs if I can. And so there's a
- 24:48lot of stuff that goes on at cricket clubs and I want to share it
