Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:20everyone. For those of you who watch, you
- 0:23would notice that I have a special guest on my lap today, a
- 0:26little pumpkin, my 3 legged Chihuahua.
- 0:29She doesn't make many appearances anymore.
- 0:31She used to make more, but she really hates coming to the
- 0:35office. It really overwhelms her.
- 0:37But today our schedules a little all over the place, so I thought
- 0:40I would bring her in. Then also yesterday there was no
- 0:42mini scroll because if you listened on Friday then you
- 0:44would know that yesterday I had the opportunity to go to the NBC
- 0:48Universal offices and interview Teresa Giudice from the Real
- 0:52Housewives of New Jersey and Whitney Rose from the Real
- 0:55Housewives of Salt Lake City. They're here in Sydney right now
- 0:58and I got to do a press interview with them and it was
- 1:00so exciting. It was so cool to meet Teresa.
- 1:03I've met Whitney before. I interviewed her when she was
- 1:05here for South by Southwest with Heather.
- 1:07But to meet Teresa in the flesh? Iconic.
- 1:11And she said she liked my hair. OK, let's get into the stories
- 1:15for today. The first story that I have for
- 1:17you guys is that Sarah's Day has called out the perfume brand who
- 1:21is Elijah for cancelling their collaboration.
- 1:24Sarah's Day is an Australian fitness influencer turned mommy
- 1:28vlogger. Basically, she's one of the Ogs.
- 1:30You know, there were so many of them in Australia.
- 1:33I know we did like a deep dive into fitness influencer culture
- 1:35a few months ago. But like, Sarah's Day was one of
- 1:38the Ogs, like in Australia specifically.
- 1:40So she had a collaboration going on with fragrance brand Who, who
- 1:44is Elijah in the works for what she said was about two years.
- 1:47And she shared like a little bit here and there on her social
- 1:50media about this potential collab.
- 1:51Over the weekend, Sarah took to social media claiming that the
- 1:54collaboration was axed and she was blindsided.
- 1:57That is my collaboration with Who Is Elijah.
- 1:59So two years ago they reached out to me to make a fragrance
- 2:02with them. And as you know, I have
- 2:04documented the entire process. You guys have come along on the
- 2:07journey and we were all really excited and unfortunately it's
- 2:12no longer happening and I'm sure you're asking why and honestly
- 2:16we are asking the same question. I don't have the answers for you
- 2:20unfortunately. I know that might sound really
- 2:22confusing or frustrating, but I don't have more to give you.
- 2:25OK, so before I get into what else transpired, this started to
- 2:29blow up. I would say mostly like who is
- 2:31Elijah is quite like a social media, like a buzzy brand and
- 2:35the founder Raquel has become a bit of an influencer herself off
- 2:39the back of being the CEO and owner of this brand.
- 2:42Sarah's followers, I guess started going after the brand,
- 2:45which prompted Raquel to respond.
- 2:47Raquel defended herself saying that given the brand is
- 2:49expanding internationally, they need to allocate the budget to
- 2:53the expansion and this was just a strategic decision.
- 2:56Quote, we ended a contract well within the agreed terms.
- 2:59There was no breach. She stated.
- 3:01The decision to end the collab was sent by me personally to the
- 3:05other party via e-mail and I left the door open for further
- 3:08discussion. But what I received in response
- 3:10was unprofessional. What is being he said, is deeply
- 3:13misleading and is harmful to the brand.
- 3:15This was a business decision. We offered for the project to
- 3:18continue under the parties own brand with our full support, but
- 3:21that offer was declined. There's no scandal here, no
- 3:24villain, just a strategic decision for the future of my
- 3:27business, one I fully stand by. So here's what Sarah said to
- 3:31news.com dot AU in a statement. One of my main roles and
- 3:35obligations within our contract was to organically promote the
- 3:38product, which of course I was excited to do.
- 3:41I was documenting and creating content in good faith that this
- 3:45collaboration would come to fruition and the finished
- 3:47product would be accessible to my audience.
- 3:50Our contract allowed either party to terminate on six months
- 3:53given notice. Ultimately, I did not see this
- 3:56coming after working on this together for such an extended
- 3:59period of time. OK.
- 4:00So from that statement, it does make it sound like they didn't
- 4:03have anything beyond like, a preliminary contract possibly,
- 4:06and that Sarah was starting the process of like, organically
- 4:09promoting the collab before things were like, truly in the
- 4:12works. But I mean, she does seem to be
- 4:15blindsided. I mean, it's really interesting
- 4:17because like on social media, like on TikTok and on Instagram,
- 4:22people are very much on Sarah's side, but then on Reddit, people
- 4:26are very much on Raquel's side. There's definitely no like right
- 4:30or wrong. I think who is Elijah is like,
- 4:32you know, they, they didn't terminate this contract without
- 4:36knowing all of the legalities around it.
- 4:38Like, I do believe that they did it within their rights.
- 4:41However, I think at the same time Sarah had been promoting
- 4:44this to her followers, people were excited for it.
- 4:46That is very evident by the social media discourse by like
- 4:49the comments on her video and stuff.
- 4:51People were like genuinely excited.
- 4:52So I understand Sarah wanting to tell her audience about what's
- 4:56happening with this. I think where it all went really
- 4:58messy was, you know, people started coming for Raquel and
- 5:02the brand. And so she responded.
- 5:04And then Sarah was getting in the comments with people who
- 5:07work at the brand and the brand founders, friends and stuff who
- 5:10were like commenting on her video and she was commenting
- 5:12back to them. And there was like all this
- 5:14infighting like in the comment section, which honestly just
- 5:16made both sides look really unprofessional.
- 5:19I would also be really surprised if this is the first time that a
- 5:21business deal has fallen through for Sarah when they had just a
- 5:25preliminary contract. Like, I don't know, I find it
- 5:28really surprising that she's like, I was blindsided.
- 5:31Like I can't believe they pulled this after working together.
- 5:34I mean, I get it like that, that honestly sucks.
- 5:36But in business this kind of stuff happens all the time.
- 5:39So I am quite surprised. Like we will have basically
- 5:42signed contracts with brands and they'll say, oh, you know what,
- 5:44for like Q3, our priorities have shifted and we are going to use
- 5:49that money and allocate it somewhere else and like, sorry,
- 5:51this isn't going ahead. You know, like that does just
- 5:53like happen all the time. So I'm surprised if this is like
- 5:56the first time this has happened to Sarah, but I don't know.
- 5:59OK, I had to put Pumpkin down. She was getting agitated.
- 6:02So the next ray that I have for you guys, this is a bit of a
- 6:04palate cleanser before we get into something really messed up
- 6:08that happened this weekend. But there is this new viral
- 6:11phenomenon on TikTok and people are calling it like the
- 6:14Indonesian boat kids. But essentially that's to
- 6:16describe the children, usually children who dance at the front
- 6:20of rowing canoes during a racing tradition in Indonesia called
- 6:25Paku Jalur. Paku Jalur is a traditional boat
- 6:28race that takes place annually and started in the 1600s.
- 6:32And it's going viral all over TikTok because at the front of
- 6:36the boat, they have very often children.
- 6:38Sometimes it's like very petite people, but usually it's
- 6:42children who are kind of like at the helm while the rowers are
- 6:45rowing and they're dancing. Clips of these boat kids are
- 6:49going viral all over the Internet.
- 6:51There's like fan edits of them. There's commentary pieces on
- 6:55them. It's just like such an
- 6:56expression of joy and it's so fun.
- 6:58And I just wanted to note this. Like, it's going viral
- 7:01everywhere, but it's just like, such a wholesome moment from the
- 7:03Internet. Like, we're at such a weird and
- 7:05divided time online right now, especially as it relates to,
- 7:08like, learning about other cultures and their traditions.
- 7:11And so I think it's like, really nice to see everyone kind of
- 7:13coming together and being like, yeah, this is actually really
- 7:16fun. All right.
- 7:17And the last word that I have for you guys today, like I said,
- 7:19this is a really messed up thing that happened over the weekend.
- 7:23But YouTuber Adam McIntyre was reported to ice by his snark
- 7:28Reddit. So Adam McIntyre is a popular
- 7:30Internet culture slash like pop culture creator.
- 7:33He's very well known for being the main person to call Colleen
- 7:36Ballinger out for her inappropriate behavior with fans
- 7:40as because he was one of her biggest fans when he was younger
- 7:42and he ended up in a very weird relationship with her as a
- 7:47teenager. Since being at the forefront of
- 7:49that movement, he has built quite a following online doing
- 7:52commentary content. So Adam has been in and out of
- 7:56the US since February as he's been on a podcast tour.
- 8:00He's been doing the chronically online tour and it was like sold
- 8:03out all over the US. So in his snark Reddit, which he
- 8:06has been very open about, like he's OK having, you know, he's
- 8:09like, I don't really they feel like it's fair if I like talk
- 8:12about people online publicly and then I try and get like my
- 8:15subreddit shut down, like a lot of influencers do that a lot of
- 8:18creators. And he has been quite open about
- 8:21the fact that he doesn't care, not that he doesn't care that
- 8:23he's a subreddit or a snark Reddit, but that, you know, he
- 8:26doesn't feel like that's necessarily fair.
- 8:27So the vast majority of the people in his snark Reddit seem
- 8:31to be calling Ballinger fans. OK, so that seems to be kind of
- 8:34how this started. And a lot of them seem to be
- 8:37very much like on her side, even though that whole scenario, I
- 8:40mean, his first video about her was years and years and years
- 8:44ago. And then of course, like when
- 8:46more started coming out a couple years ago, he was like very much
- 8:49at the forefront of this whole situation.
- 8:50But it's just been such a long time and he has had such much
- 8:53bigger career since then. So over the weekend his visa,
- 8:58like a picture of his visa, his work visa to go into the US was
- 9:02posted on his snap Reddit. Adam has an O1 visa from
- 9:07February until the end of July this year.
- 9:10So for anyone that is unfamiliar, an O1 visa is a
- 9:13quote non immigrant visa for individual who possesses
- 9:16extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education,
- 9:20business or athletics. I remember one of my friends got
- 9:23an O1 visa, like one of my Australian friends to go over to
- 9:26the US and she was like, it's a wanky visa.
- 9:28It's like a visa that you get. If you're like kind of famous,
- 9:31you have some press articles about you.
- 9:33You're going to do things that like, you will basically be able
- 9:36to like propel your fame, not always, but like, you know,
- 9:38propel your career in kind of a like public figure esque way in
- 9:42the US. OK.
- 9:43So when his visa got approved, Adam posted this photo of it on
- 9:47social media. So that is how they got this
- 9:50photo. This photo was not like obtained
- 9:52in any type of weird way. OK.
- 9:54He had posted this and then it got shared to his subreddit this
- 9:57weekend. So in this picture that he
- 9:59posted, you can see it says visa type slash class and it says R
- 10:04and then it says O1R at the front of like RO1 visa.
- 10:08So the R at the front of this visa class in the US it just
- 10:11stands for regular quote. The visa R is a temporary visa
- 10:15for business and tourism. The R used during the
- 10:17application or shown as the visa type on passports means regular
- 10:22instead of diplomatic residents work or another visa type.
- 10:25So what happened is this was posted people in his snark
- 10:29Reddit decided to like look into his visa allowances or
- 10:33restrictions and things that he was allowed to do.
- 10:35OK, and they put like the US visa R, maybe they put RO one,
- 10:41but either way, they put R somewhere into Google to figure
- 10:44out like what his visa allows and what Gemini, which is
- 10:48Google, Google's version of essentially like Chad GBT,
- 10:51right? It's like their AI Gemini at the
- 10:54top. You know, when you Google things
- 10:55now it's just Gemini at the top and then articles.
- 10:57OK, so Gemini came up and it said that the R1 visa is a
- 11:03religious visa specifically for religious activities.
- 11:07And you cannot make money on this visa.
- 11:09Reminder he is not on an R1 visa, he is on an O1 visa with
- 11:15an R at the front to indicate it is a regular visa type.
- 11:20So Gemini was saying like this is a religious visa and instead
- 11:24of doing any little bit of research beyond this, the snark
- 11:28Reddit ran with it. They all hyped each other up and
- 11:31they went into like some of them went into.
- 11:34Honestly it felt like mass psychosis reading some of these
- 11:37posts where they were just like snowballing off each other,
- 11:40hyping each other up, just truly believing that he would post on
- 11:45the Internet that he was doing something illegal like going
- 11:48into a country on a religious activities visa and very clearly
- 11:52making money. And then at least one person,
- 11:54Adam, has said several. I don't know about that, but at
- 11:57least one person reported him to ICE under the pretense that he
- 12:01was lying about the purpose of his visa, and this person posted
- 12:05proof that they submitted him to ICE online.
- 12:08The post has obviously been deleted.
- 12:09The whole thread has been deleted.
- 12:10OK, but it's a screenshot that says thank you.
- 12:12Your submission has been received on the US Immigration
- 12:15and Customs Enforcement website. And then they commented saying
- 12:18the only time I won't say fuck ICE.
- 12:22First of all, you obviously support ICE if you are going to
- 12:25report somebody to ICE, OK, like to say all the only time I'm
- 12:28going to say fuck ICE to weaponize ICE during this time,
- 12:34specifically at any time, but especially during this time is
- 12:39so sick. And is this kind of stuff that
- 12:42we're talking about when we reference like snark going too
- 12:45far. And I know we've referenced
- 12:46snark going too far several times recently, but this is like
- 12:51a prime example of how extreme snarkers and those kind of
- 12:57gossipy forum websites can go. And like I said, a lot of his
- 13:00snarkers seem to be pro calling Ballinger.
- 13:03So this is possibly another example of when parasocial
- 13:06relationships go too far, like trying to almost like defend
- 13:09their fave in this like very horrific roundabout way.
- 13:13I wanted to read a comment from Reddit that somebody posted I
- 13:16think it was on like the R YouTube forum where people were
- 13:19talking about this scenario and they wrote this mentality from
- 13:23Americans that reported Adam to ICE but simultaneously hate ICE
- 13:27is a direct reflection on how US got to the current state it's
- 13:30in. Oh I hate this thing unless it
- 13:32helps me win against someone I hate is exactly how you divide
- 13:36people so they fight amongst themselves and don't look at the
- 13:38bigger picture. And now if you go on his snark
- 13:41Reddit OK. Like there are tons of people
- 13:43who are like, what the fuck, guys?
- 13:45Like, why did we do this? Why did you guys do this?
- 13:48What is going on? But there are also people in
- 13:51this thread on his start page saying that like he's pushing
- 13:55this narrative that he's the victim and that like he did this
- 13:59to himself. And they don't mean like the
- 14:00visa situation because he is fully in the US legally and he
- 14:04did nothing wrong with his visa. But I guess they mean like his
- 14:06behavior online, his commentary, I guess how he shows up, his
- 14:09content, whatever. It doesn't matter how much you
- 14:12hate his content. OK, Nothing is as damaging that
- 14:16he has ever done is as damaging as you reporting him to Ice.
- 14:21We all know the stories and we all see what's happening with
- 14:23people who are being taken away by Ice right now.
- 14:26And I really think if everything going on in the US with Ice
- 14:29right now wasn't happening, they wouldn't have reported him to
- 14:32Ice. Like they did it knowing that
- 14:34this is like such a hot button topic right now.
- 14:36They know that like Ice is on this like tirade right now and
- 14:40that there is a possibility that he would like get in trouble
- 14:42with them and that he would get taken away.
- 14:44I truly believe that. I truly, I really believe that
- 14:46that is why they did that, because they wanted to inflict
- 14:48like such extreme harm on him. I'm not saying this in defense
- 14:52of Adam McIntyre in general, OK? I'm sure there are many valid
- 14:55reasons to not like him, to think that his content is
- 14:58damaging or whatever these people think.
- 15:00I'm sure that there are some valid reasons there.
- 15:03But this scenario is so fucking sick and so crazy and like we
- 15:08all need a fucking wake up call. I'm interested to hear from you
- 15:11guys why it feels like, why you think it feels like right now.
- 15:15Snark specific specifically, you know, if there's not just like a
- 15:18spotlight on it. Like we are at a time when
- 15:20everything is just like coming to a head and things are just
- 15:23feeling more and more extreme. And I don't know if it's just
- 15:25because like in our everyday lives, things feel more and more
- 15:29extreme. And so it's kind of like
- 15:30projection. I don't know if it's just like
- 15:32these instances are being highlighted more because there's
- 15:35been a few of them in like very quick succession or if things
- 15:39actually are like getting much worse.
- 15:40But like, what the actual fuck? No, no.
- 15:45I hope the person who reported him to ICE has to face
- 15:48consequences. I'm sure they won't, but I hope
- 15:50they do. Adam has made his own video
- 15:53addressing all of this, so definitely go watch it if you
- 15:55guys want like more contacts from him and kind of how it all
- 15:58came about, how he feels about it, all of that.
- 16:00But yeah, this is just so messed up.
- 16:03And I, I'm just, Oh my God. I actually, I don't even know.
- 16:07I don't even know. I don't even have words.
- 16:09OK, that's it for Mini school today guys.
- 16:11Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 16:13Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 16:16Annabelle will talk to you guys tomorrow for Mini tech and I
- 16:19will talk to you on Thursday. Bye.
