- 0:06Speaker 1: Good afternoon. This is a gb News. We are Britain's
- 0:08Speaker 1: news channel. I'm nana a queer. It is fast a
- 0:11Speaker 1: boat doing twenty five minutes after five o'clock. If you
- 0:14Speaker 1: just tuned in, welcome on board three o'clock the next time. Yeah. Right,
- 0:18Speaker 1: So let's do this. It's time for this week's Difficult Conversations,
- 0:21Speaker 1: which is with former Royal Marines commander and fundraiser Chris Thrall.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Now he is after running the length of Britain, crossing
- 0:30Speaker 1: the Sahara and even rowing the Atlantic Ocean. He's set
- 0:33Speaker 1: to take on any challenge by climbing Mount Everest, where
- 0:36Speaker 1: he's aiming to raise money for veteran struggling with ptsp
- 0:40Speaker 1: Well pleas to say that. Chris joins me in the studio. Chris,
- 0:43Speaker 1: thank you very much for coming in. You're a really
- 0:45Speaker 1: good to see what fabulous blue eyes? I always wanted
- 0:47Speaker 1: blue eyes. I might try some contacts. I'll probably look
- 0:50Speaker 1: like the devil. Chris, let's talk about it. So you
- 0:54Speaker 1: are a former Royal Marine. Talk to me about your
- 0:56Speaker 1: life and how you got involved and became a Royal Marine.
- 1:00Speaker 2: So I had the stereotypical challenging childhood I guess you
- 1:04Speaker 2: could say quite a turbulent upbringing. It resulted in me
- 1:09Speaker 2: living in a round of twelve homeless for the second
- 1:12Speaker 2: time when I was seventeen, and my knocks on the
- 1:17Speaker 2: window one day and so I've just joined the Rural Marines.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I bet you couldn't do it. So you say to
- 1:24Speaker 2: that if you say that to a angry young man,
- 1:29Speaker 2: I took him up on the challenge and the rest
- 1:32Speaker 2: his history as really, what.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Was it like being part of the Royal Marines? What
- 1:37Speaker 1: was you What were your favorite bits about it?
- 1:41Speaker 2: Well, it's a phenomenal experience for a young person who
- 1:44Speaker 2: had pretty much no direction in life. The Rual Marines
- 1:49Speaker 2: has a proud history. I was at school when the
- 1:52Speaker 2: Falklands conflict kicked off and later got to know and
- 1:56Speaker 2: work with a lot of the troops that were down there.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And you know the thing those guys were. The things
- 2:04Speaker 2: those guys went through just beyond belief. It makes you
- 2:07Speaker 2: so so proud of our forces. And got to travel
- 2:13Speaker 2: the world, got to serve on the front line in
- 2:16Speaker 2: the Northern Ireland conflict, which was pretty hectic, you could say,
- 2:20Speaker 2: which is a euphemism. Things going back and underwent Arctic
- 2:25Speaker 2: warfare training up in the north of Norway, and then
- 2:29Speaker 2: I was part of a detachment on board an aircraft
- 2:32Speaker 2: carrier doing her security.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Now, of course a lot of people suffer with PTSD.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Is that something that you suffered with, and you know,
- 2:40Speaker 1: without being too graphic, were there moments? You know, tell
- 2:43Speaker 1: us of some of the moments that you know that
- 2:45Speaker 1: you saw in conflict.
- 2:47Speaker 2: So I didn't get traumatized by conflict itself, despite the
- 2:53Speaker 2: fact that the chap behind me on patrol dean, Hello,
- 2:56Speaker 2: if you get to watch this, he got shot three
- 2:59Speaker 2: times and then the gunman turned his sights on me.
- 3:04Speaker 2: He walked away. Believe it or not, the rounds hit
- 3:07Speaker 2: his equipment. But yeah, that wasn't such an issue to me.
- 3:12Speaker 2: That was kind of what I signed up for. But
- 3:14Speaker 2: I think the issue that we're seeing here, there's a
- 3:17Speaker 2: definitely a suicide issue in the forces, and I think
- 3:22Speaker 2: it links with a lot of us joined from damaged childhoods.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And of course this is one of the reasons why
- 3:28Speaker 1: you're doing the fundraising to support people who have gone
- 3:30Speaker 1: through PTSD. Talk to us about what you're doing there.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Yes, So I've done a series of challenges over the years.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I've run the length of the United Kingdom road, across
- 3:39Speaker 2: the Atlantic, as you said, run across the Sahara in
- 3:42Speaker 2: the marathon, disciblers, and the last sort of big challenges.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Climbing Everest, I mean Everest. Yeah. So it's been a
- 3:53Speaker 3: dream since I was very young.
- 3:55Speaker 1: And so you're currently fundraising to do that. How much
- 3:58Speaker 1: do you need to get there?
- 4:01Speaker 3: So we're talking about thirty five pounds?
- 4:06Speaker 1: And have you got to go fund me or fundme
- 4:07Speaker 1: page that people can try and help you with, and
- 4:09Speaker 1: how do you get there?
- 4:10Speaker 2: Yes, go fundme is gofund me dot com, Forward Slash
- 4:14Speaker 2: Challenge Everest or. You can just go to my website
- 4:18Speaker 2: Chris Thrill dot com and the links are there.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Well, I have you as a usually very very generous
- 4:23Speaker 1: and they would obviously love to help you. I'm sure
- 4:25Speaker 1: they would. It's purely for charity and to help others. So, Chris,
- 4:29Speaker 1: what do you do in your day to day life?
- 4:31Speaker 3: What are you doing good? Questions?
- 4:33Speaker 2: So I'm a YouTuber, got a very popular YouTube channel,
- 4:39Speaker 2: some wonderful subscribers.
- 4:43Speaker 3: I do life coaching.
- 4:45Speaker 2: I like to keep myself fit and I've written I
- 4:50Speaker 2: think six six books now about my three of which
- 4:53Speaker 2: were memoirs about my experience of ending updown and out
- 4:57Speaker 2: in Hong Kong, and then the Erney the journey from there.
- 5:02Speaker 1: What do you think about today's conflict and all the
- 5:04Speaker 1: things that are going on in the world as you
- 5:07Speaker 1: see Israel and Iran at war, because I would say
- 5:10Speaker 1: they're at war looking at that, obviously there'll be people
- 5:13Speaker 1: on the front line fighting in Kaza and all so
- 5:16Speaker 1: on and so forth. What do you think about the
- 5:18Speaker 1: men and people who are fighting in those wars?
- 5:21Speaker 2: I think was it George Carlin summed it up best.
- 5:24Speaker 2: It's a big club and we're not in it. The
- 5:27Speaker 2: notion that you can send our teenagers to massacre other
- 5:31Speaker 2: teenagers and there's going to be no, you know, no
- 5:33Speaker 2: pushback from that.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Is.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Some would argue is pretty ludicrous.
- 5:39Speaker 2: And we know our politicians won't be the ones watching
- 5:42Speaker 2: the coffins come back, will they? And this is a
- 5:46Speaker 2: different level this kind of warfare. Isn't you know, running
- 5:50Speaker 2: around the desert chasing people with flip flops and rusty
- 5:54Speaker 2: ak forty sevens. This is a situation where you or
- 5:58Speaker 2: I and our family you could literally hear a buzz
- 6:01Speaker 2: and at the window and you open the curtains and
- 6:05Speaker 2: there's a drone staring at you, operated by a teenager
- 6:10Speaker 2: in Moscow or Tehran or wherever it might be.
- 6:14Speaker 3: And that's the last thing you're going to see it.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Yeah, well it's frightening if we continue to let the
- 6:23Speaker 2: wall get pulled over our eyes about conflict.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Yeah, this is Chris, fascinating, really good to talk to you.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I could actually sit here and talk to you phrases
- 6:30Speaker 1: with a cup of tea in a cake. Sadly we
- 6:32Speaker 1: haven't got time, because I love to hear all the stories. Chris.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Just remind us of Ken about your go fund be paid.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Where can people support you on your next expedition, which
- 6:40Speaker 1: will be.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Climbing Everest, So climbing out Everest next April. I'm looking
- 6:44Speaker 2: for sponsors always. Traditionally my endeavors have cost myself and
- 6:49Speaker 2: my girlfriend quite a significant amount of money. If someone
- 6:53Speaker 2: can step forward and support me, that would be absolutely brilliant.
- 6:57Speaker 1: If you're raising money for charity to help.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Them, Yes, if the good people of the public can
- 7:03Speaker 2: also chuck in, if it's only a fiver, that's absolutely wonderful.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Gofund me dot com forward Slash Challenge Everest.
- 7:13Speaker 1: All right, Chris, thank you very much, really good to
- 7:15Speaker 1: talk to you. That is Chris Thrall. He's a former
- 7:17Speaker 1: Royal Marine Command and he's fundraising for his next expedition
- 7:21Speaker 1: to support people with PTSD.
